Policy differences take center stage in first presidential debate

GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama square off in the first presidential debate.

DENVER – Policy largely trumped “zingers” in the first debate between President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney as the two sparred on issues as varied as taxes and spending, entitlements, education and more.

Romney sought to cast himself as a capable and affable alternative to the sitting president and looked to establish himself as presidential in a major opportunity to reach voters in a side-by-side setting at the University of Denver. Hitting that mark was especially important for Republican presidential nominee, given the high expectations he had faced entering tonight’s forum, having trailed Obama in most polls before this event.

President Barack Obama shakes hands with Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney after the first presidential debate at the University of Denver, Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, in Denver.

Obama, for his part, cast his Republican opponent as elusive in specifying just how he would cut taxes without adding to the national debt, or what form his own health care reforms would take.

But neither candidate seemed to achieve any breakout moment, and two additional debates throughout October could prove more pivotal to the election’s outcome.

VOTE: Did the debate do anything to influence who you will support on Election Day?

Taxes and spending dominated the outset of the debate, as Obama and Romney battled largely over the details of Romney’s tax proposals, which call for an across-the-board, 20 percent reduction in each marginal tax rate. The Republican argues the cost of these would be offset by reducing deductions.

"My number one principle is there will be no tax cut that adds to the deficit," Romney said.

Romney asserted his tax plan would spur job creation and help balance the budget, but the president insisted that these proposals simply do not add up.

In the final push in the 2012 presidential election, candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama make their last appeals to voters.

"The fact is that if you are lowering the rates the way you described, governor, then it is not possible to come up with enough deductions and loopholes that only affect high-income individuals to avoid either raising the deficit or burdening the middle class," Obama said. "It's math. It's arithmetic."

With a few exceptions, both candidates largely avoided the snappy, practiced lines that sometimes come to define debates. Their discussion at many times overrode the objections of moderator Jim Lehrer, and some of the topics for debate had to be shortened or cut altogether to accommodate for the candidates’ long-windedness.

PhotoBlog: Over beers, laundry and straight razor shaves, Americans tune in to the presidential debate

In a time-honored debate tradition, both campaigns’ surrogates declared victory for their candidate of choice. But style for both Obama and Romney seemed as important of a factor as any specific answer.

Romney entered the debate needing to make up ground versus Obama, and the matchup this evening offered voters their first chance to make a direct comparison between the two of them. The Republican nominee also sought to soften his tone in many respects, a bow toward the net-negative personal approval rating he suffers in many polls.

Truth Squad: The Denver debate

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina told reporters following the debate that the president’s long-windedness was “never going to be our strong suit,” and acknowledged that Romney had scored “style points.”

“This is a race to 270 electoral votes,” Messina said. “In states like Ohio and Virginia and Florida, Romney’s positions on tax cuts and Medicare are going to be real problems for him. And he doubled down on those all night.”

But Obama didn’t score a knockout punch against Romney, declining to employ the controversial video about the “47 percent” of Americans whose votes the GOP nominee had essentially dismissed. Obama declined to talk about Romney’s record at Bain Capital or the personal income tax rate paid by Romney – two major, effective lines of attack used by the Democratic campaign over the summer.

NBC's David Gregory, Savannah Guthrie and Chuck Todd provide analysis immediately following the first 2012 presidential debate between GOP nominee Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama.

Romney also parried many of the president’s attacks by largely embracing the essence of many of Obama’s own policies – from health care to education and regulation – while emphasizing the areas in which the two of them differed.

Romney said he supports repealing the Dodd-Frank financial regulatory reform law, but replacing it with an alternative of his own. He has said that about immigration, and defused a briar patch involving his and Obama’s similar health care plans by seizing upon process.

“I like the way we did it in Massachusetts. I like the fact that in my state, we had Republicans and Democrats come together and work together,” said Romney. “What you did instead was to push through a plan without a single Republican vote.”

Toward the end of the debate, Obama struck back by questioning whether Romney’s own promises were too good to be true.

“At some point, I think the American people have to ask themselves, is the reason that Gov. Romney is keeping all these plans to replace secret because they're too good?” Obama asked.

The immediate fallout of the debate will be most quickly reflected in media cycles on Thursday and into the weekend, though it might take days’ worth of polling to identify whether tonight’s debate moved the needle.

Obama and Romney will next meet Oct. 16 for the second of three debates. Before then, Vice President Joe Biden and Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan will debate next Thursday in Kentucky.

Mitt is coming off as the cocky, angry, stiff white guy. He is disrespectful to the president and the moderator. I hate a candidate who can't shut up. He is slitting his own throat. He continues to show that he doesn't care about seniors, college kids, and the poor. He will be no better off, and probably worse off, than before. He is the obnoxious, ugly American. He has a wise azz smirk on his face whenever he is not actually lying out loud.

Fact is the American people will loose this election. Obama is sure doing a lot of stuttering. I have to laugh at Obama challenging Romney on budget math when Obama has presided over the largest increase in our national debt, both in terms of absolute dollars and in terms of percentage of GDP, in history. In three and a half years Obama has added over $5.1 trillion to the national debt, a 50% increase. This is more than Bush added to the debt during his entire 8 years in office. If there is anyone in this debate who does not understand budget math it is Obama. He keeps harping on the Bush tax cuts for the rich when those tax cuts, if reversed, would not account for even 1% of the deficit in the budget. Obama's idiotic cut to the Social Security payroll tax did more to increase the deficit than any tax cut Bush backed. Obama cut the income to a program that was already in financial trouble - how does the math on that add up!!! This country simply can not afford four more years of Obama and his failed economic and financial policies, not to mention his failed foreign policy.

This debate is not equitably conducted. We have timed each speaker and consistently President Obama is given more time. Consistently Jim Lehrer interupts Governor Romney and does not interupt President Obama. How can one evaluate clearly this debate when it is out of balance and biased.

If you truly believe all of this rhetoric, then you are not focused on the issues, but on personalities. When will the electorate focus on real issues and not personalities.

The politicians are winning and you, the public, are the losers. Unless you are part of the 57% who pay no taxes - then of course you are free-loading off the rest of us, who have not seen raises and are paying higher insurance premiums for less care due to Obamacare. That's a real issue - not that someone is sooooo coool. Really?

Now he is telling us how he will take care of our most vulnerable citizens just before he cuts them all off so he can give billionaires more money. Sorry Mitt, you don't care about us, so we don't care about you.

Mitt really said it about an hour ago. He would tell us that taking care of disabled people isn't important to fund it. Billionaires are important enough to fund, and so are oil companies.

This could end up a repeat of the '80 election dynamic. The media created an unflattering narrative about Reagan, that was turned upside down in the debates. His manner and performance didn't match the narrative. The Romney we're seeing tonight doesn't match the narrative that's been created around him to date. It'll be interesting to see if the polls swing from Obama the same way they swung away from Carter in the final weeks of that election.

JS in SD said " In three and a half years Obama has added over $5.1 trillion to the national debt, a 50% increase. This is more than Bush added to the debt during his entire 8 years in office."

If you check the facts in this statement most of this is still from the previous owner, former president Bush. How is that you ask? Easy! 2 wars that was inherited from Mr. Bush and the interest from 10 trillions in debt when president Obama took office that we are still paying for. In other words to make it clear: How much has the 2 wars and the growing interest cost added for the last 4 years to the current debt? Deduct that amount together with the debt inherited from Mr. Bush and you will get the true amount that has been added by the Obama administration.

Overall, it seems to me that Romney kept talking about what he was "planning" to do. We all know they say about "the best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry." Mitt wouldn't say how or what his plans were in any detail. He dodged the questions by bringing up things that Obama did or did not do.

Obama did not directly hit Mitt on most of the blatant lies that he knew to be wrong.

Both of them had eyes that were blinking like a pair of lights on an emergency vehicle.

YOu all know that someone who is blinking their eyes are generally not telling the truth or at least the whole truth.

I can't wait till the next debate.

"Just remember the '80s people. Times were good, everybody was working, and the economy was booming."

I do remember the 80's. I lost my job and my house in the 80's. The economy in my state and most of the Midwest was dead, under Reagan and the great failed experiment of Reaganomics, aka trickle-down. The same crap Romney is pushing now. Didn't work then, won't work now.

Your 80's economy was booming? What planet was that exactly?

I understood "trickle down government". That is where more money goes to the government and the benefits trickle down to you, if the government thinks you should get that trickle.

BTW of every $1.00 of tax, the government returns $.79 in benefit.

I made my 14 year old daughter watch the debate with me. I didn't say a word through-out the debate but, she would say how much obama looked lost from time to time. The POTUS is a PUTZ - and he proved it even more tonight!

Obama is arrogant and has a can't be bothered attitude. He has damaged this country, but that is all going to change on November 6th.

Romney had the knowledge, the points, the facts, and showed the event the respect it deserved. Obama could barely look up, stumbled and stammered - even with Lehr trying his best to help him. I've known all along Obama was a good speaker with a teleprompter - but when he's on his own, he just spins 'round and 'round the same bullsh*t he's been spinning for almost 4 years!

AMERICA DESERVES BETTER and will get it with ROMNEY/RYAN 2012 AND 2016!

I gotta agree with Scott here. I think Romney won this--but he did stray significantly from his previous positions. I was very disappointed by the President's performance. It seemed more like he was trying not to make any mistakes rather than trying get a win. Unfortunately that gave Romney a lot of latitude to move around and make his points. It was also a ridiculously poorly moderated debate. How is it that Romney got the last word all the time, even when he got the first word?

Romney certainly won in distorting the facts and dodging the serious issues--such as how Romney/Ryan voucher care will end access to healthcare for future seniors born after 1957 because private insurance will again (as before Medicare was started) raise premiums beyond what most seniors can afford, leaving them uninsured and broke and unable to pay for any healthcare.

I watched CNN. What you are not saying is that the reason you think Romney did so well is because he didn't completely crash and burn like everyone thought he was going to. He has been being training for months to debate Obama.

Obama still has to do his job as POTUS, hasn't been in a debate for years, and it was his 20th Anniversary. I think he has an excuse to not be on point in this debate.

But, that being said I still think Obama was talking to the American people in a serious and well communicated way. Romney contradicted everything he has been saying for a year and a half with little to no details.

I personally was surprised how well trained Romney was. If you kept watching CNN you would have seen the guy who trained him. Repub from Ohio. He acted as the Pres during the training. He said that Romney was a good little doggy and said everything he was told to say very well.

People get into business to make money, insurance are a business; they will make money from those that can least afford it. No to vouchers. Police Medicare to stop fraud. Before the American public, Romney boldly lied.

Before millions of our citizens, again, Mitt "flipped flopped. "

Mitt retreated from his campaign platform and website statements.

Romney's lies:

1) Suddenly, he does not believe in "Trickle-Down" economics.

2) Suddenly, he states that he will not lower taxes for the wealth.

3) Suddenly, he says that because people are "suffering," this is the reason that he is running for the office of the presidency.

4) Suddenly, he wants to help small businesses.

5) Suddenly, he wants to creates here in America.

6) Suddenly, he cares about public education.

7) Suddenly, he believes that Wall Street and banks should have some regulation.

8) Falsely, he states that only future Medicare recipients plans and benefits will be effected.

9) Suddenly, he ensures that under his health plan, insurers will not be able to dump the sick.

10) Suddenly, he is for Green Energy.

Romney still did not reveal any details about his economic, health care and educational plans for this country. Some television commentators state that he was "alert." However alertness does not translate into an equitable and prosperous plan for this country.

President Obama is spoke the truth, ["Because he thinks his plans are so good for the middle class is not the reason that Governor Romney is hiding his plans."]

Independents: Mitt does not care about you.

Vote a straight Democratic ticket:

Anyone that was drawn in by Romney's fake, robotic rhetoric is certainly gullible. I haven't seen the debate yet (I'm working, have it DVR'ed), but I've been watching RMoney prance around (what's with the way he walks, anyway?) for over a year and have yet to hear him utter a single word that I thought I could take at face value.

Even if he won this debate (which I very seriously doubt), the President will have learned from his mistakes in this one and take him apart in the last 2 debates. And Ryan is no match for Joe Biden, so that one's a foregone conclusion.

Duane

look for a big swing in the next polls

Don't expect it. The news media pays for most of the polls and has say in how the polls are conducted. The Polls were "tightening" the last couple of days, for no real reason, or so you might think. What the polling companies did was take the partisan mix back to 2008. We are probably somewhere between 2008 & 2004. I expect a wave of polls saying Obama's lead extends, unless democrats wake up.

Notice that the theme has been it's already over for the last 2 months. The polls have been run to support that concept.

What republicans always say is pay no attention to the polls, just show up and vote. Listening to the drumbeat that you are behind is about emotionally suppressing those who would oppose as already defeated and hopeless to resist.

JimSpence,

If Romney's "plans" were so great for America, why did he scamper and run away from his own campaign platform? With facts, you are more than FREE to rebut Obama's statements.

Tonight was supposed to be a brawl,

When candidates do not have FACTS, they distract their audiences with false "bravado." Romney should have "brawled for the workers who he put on the unemployment line while he sat in the "corner office" at Bain.

this was not supposed to be pretty or polite.

There was nothing substantive or pretty about Mitt's side show.

The presidency is not the coddled job Barrack Hussein has made it out to be.

Millions of American will agree that ending the war in Iraq, enacting The Affordable Care Act, enacting The Lilly Ledbetter Act and saving America's automobile industry is just the right "coddling" that Obama's leadership has given to our citizens and to this country.

Romney was presidential

Romney sounded like a computer whose audio speed was set "too high."

What debate were 1/3 of the people here watching? LOL, Romney won rather substantially. This debate will make it clear to the average American that Obama's stylized advertisements are based upon lies and deception, and Obama is simply not very good without his teleprompter. Romney was much better in the debate than in his ads. I ESPECIALLY liked when Obama questioned the $2.8 Billion tax credits to the oil industry and then Romney told him that Obama didn't seem to mind giving $90 Billion in credits to his friends in green energy companies like Solyndra and Fisker... even though they were losers and created jobs overseas instead of here in America. (His "you only seem to invest in losers" line was wonderful!) I also liked how Romney focused on his goal of creating jobs in America as opposed to the 12-15 million jobs lost and 45 million on welfare under Obama. I also liked that Romney said he wanted to stop borrowing money from China to pay for stuff we don't need and can't afford like ObamaCare and even PBS. Speaking of PBS, Lehrer was TERRIBLE and continually interupted Romney most often... and soft-spooned question to Obama, but Obama still blew most of his answers. Obama looked like a guy who wanted to go home... and he likely will in January.

I was waiting for something that never came. The moderator got to choose too many of the questions all by himself. In these days of huge deficits, why do we keep on with the failed "war on drugs"? 10's of billions of dollars are wasted on the police, court, and jails on this mess continually. DEA agents have been caught on the drugs they're paid to get rid of patronizing prostitutes in Columbia. Some states are already saving a fortune by relaxing small time pot/drug possession laws. Scrap the DEA.

This debate did not change anyone's mind about who to vote for, from the appearance of these comments.

I'm still waiting to hear what Romney's stance is on anything. The lips move, but he's not really saying anything definitive. It MUST BE that his plans are so AWESOME that he's only willing to reveal them IF he gets elected. Nah. I don't think even he knows what he'd do if he was POTUS--I believe he'd sh*t his pants if he was elected.

But I did like his tie. That is a nice tie.

@DB Akron "I understood "trickle down government". That is where more money goes to the government and the benefits trickle down to you, if the government thinks you should get that trickle. BTW of every $1.00 of tax, the government returns $.79 in benefit."

That is still a much better deal then getting paid 1/1000 of what someone else is. The only way someone can make 1000 times more then others is to take 50% from 1000 people. If you take 50% that only leaves $0.50 out of every $1 dollar while I work for you.

How many people at the top can a system support with a 1000 to 1 ratio? It would be 0.1% on average (need at least a couple people in the middle). How is that providing an opportunity to advance, or providing me with a carrot to chase after? It does not it promotes stagnation since 99.9% of the population cannot win. If you are not part of the 0.1% then you are falling further and further behind, and will never catch up. YOU ARE BEHIND THE CURVE AND PROBABLY DO NOT HAVE A CLUE WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. Once you have X amount of money it becomes EASIER to make money. Until you do it is HARDER to make money. Taxes must go up and they are the only way to limit 1000 to 1 ratios down to 10 to 1 so that 10% of the population can "win" instead of just 0.1%.

When Mitt flops again, and changes his story once again why would the President not be mad? Mitt is lying his a$$ off and the President cannot say what he is really thinking. He was probably amazed as well as I was by how much Mitt changed his "polices". Lol your boy finally did something, somewhat right this ENTIRE campaign (even though he was lying and changing his story the ENTIRE TIME, once again) and people think he has already won...LOL. ZOMG a fish flopping on the deck caught someone off-guard...say it ain't so. The poor desperate fish is trying to flop itself back into the water :P.

Mitt will mess it up before the debates are over, I bet $ on it. This was Mitt's last hope anyway and it still may not matter. The sun shines on a dog's a$$ at least once a day, or for those with tender ears/eyes, "even a broken clock is right twice a day". Even Hitler was right about International Jews. How many have duel citizenship and will be voting in our and Israeli elections?

Black people think it is "sad" to turn around at night, see a white person, and feel "safe". I feel it is "sad" that I trust a black man more then I do a white man. I do not trust Mitt or the GOP. I wish there was another choice that might have a chance of beating Mitt, but such is not the case. I will take someone who stutters over a liar any day. Did Clint Eastwood stutter at all during his speech not to long ago? Why was it ok for Clint to stutter more, but not the President? I wonder how many people here that defended Clint's speech are making fun of the President for the exact same thing right now? I wonder what I get to call them that begins with an "H"...LOL.

    Yesterday, I posted the following:

The debates will be an opportunity for Americans to take a closer look at Obama, and to see how he responds to pointed comments that Romney will doubtlessly make about the Obama legacy. Many Americans are not aware of how the Obama administration has misled them on so many things, with the help of the mass media. Talk about the recent anti-American fervor in the Muslim Middle East. If you don't question what the Obama administration and most of the mainstream media is telling you about that, you're very gullible. Ask why the Obama administration insisted that it was about a Youtube video. Did you believe that?

For whatever reason, Barack Obama feels an unnatural compulsion to protect Islam from perceived "insults". We saw this in his attempts to intercede on behalf of the planners of the so-called "Ground Zero Mosque" near the site of what was the World Trade Center, and we see it in the many comments he has made to the Islamic world and to Americans. Unfortunately, those Islamic leaders intent on harming us are smarter than we generally think they are, and they have shrewdly developed strategies to utilize Obama's emotional vulnerability for this purpose, thus they invented the Youtube video pretext specifically to appeal to Obama's vulnerability and Obama himself is unfortunately only too eager to be played in this manner.

So when you watch the debate, pay careful attention to Barack Obama's metamessage and ask yourself if you feel comfortable with the emotional vulnerabilities that he brings with him to the presidency of the United States of America.

Everybody's wondering why Obama performed so poorly tonight. You could say his mental state is starting to become evident.

So stay in your mother's basement if you must, but start asking everyone ... "you want fries with that?" so you'll be ready for your interview. You and all of your fellow right wingers, who are not in the 1%, foolishly continue to be blinded by the sludge that the GOP dumps. Romney did not present any facts. He did not give any specific details about his "plans." Jim Lear asked him for specifics. He "ducked and dodged" by stating "Its very long, very complicated." What new revelations did Mitt impart on you right wingers that will make you run to the polls, vote Republican and vote again your own self interests? Does the right have no memory? Romney was presidential, Barrack Hussein was leading from behind, as usual.

So you expect the President of the United States to be a brawler? Obama spoke for longer than Romney (4 minutes), because Obama's answers were more sophisticated. Obama displayed understanding of the job he is doing. Romney displayed a desire for the job, but wasn't able to display anything other than "Trust me." He still hasn't explained why he should be trusted.

The message is very clear: If you are looking for someone who will get us into fights, pick Romney, by all means - a nasty, argumentative man who brooks no opposition. You have already seen how he behaved towards the moderator. Do you really believe him when he says he will work with Democrats? Or do you think he will be as tyrannical as he can get away with?

If you are looking for someone who dragged us back from an economic freeze, 10%+ unemployment, rescued the auto industry, ended two wars, and destroyed al-Qaeda, look elsewhere. Romney is not your man.

Well, the economy is now recovering. Turning it around means returning us to 10% unemployment. Over all of Obama's term, unemployment has been going down. Slowly, but it's still headed in the right direction.

So, I guess Governor Romney is telling the truth when he tells us that he is going to turn this economy around.

So you expect the President of the United States to be a brawler?

Hell yes I want a brawler!

I'm tired of this limmp-wristed, politically correct, social and economic justice promoting, statist, elitist we have trespassing in our White House.

After 4 years we can formally rename it the White Whine House, because this is all Barrck Hussein and all his minions do.

Yeah, he dragged us back from an economic freeze into the Ice Age adding $5.3 trillion more Debt. And don't embarrass yourself by saying the policies of his economic plan kept us from going over some cliff. The same economists are telling you this garbage that never saw the housing and liquidity collapse coming in the first place. But now I'm supposed to believe them? No thanks.

GM still owes us $26 billion dollars--even though they have been posting profits, where is OUR money-- and Fiat was sold off to a foreign company. The common bondholders and shareholders got fleeced and the unions goonions walked away with billions of undeserved profits. Not to mention all the selective dealerships that got closed.

The Iraq war was already ended by Bush in 2008 with SOFA, all Barrack Hussein did was follow his instructions. Afghanistan has turned into a cluster f**k under the Ditherer-in Chief. We're getting more of our troops killed by Afghanis than the Taliban. The Middle East is in chaos. Turkey was just attacked by Syria. We still don't know why this administration is covering up the unconscionable death of our Ambassador and 3 diplomats in Libya.

Obviously you haven't been reading the real news. Al Qaeda is alive and doing very well. They most likely were involved in Libya. Killing Osama Porn Laden was purely symbolic for us with regards to 9/11. Al Qaeda was not and is not one man.

    Nice try Spanky.

After this "social experiment" is over maybe I can find a qualified Dem to vote for again. Romney embarrassed obama on so many levels tonight. You could see obama getting madder with each fact Romney shot back at him. I was watching the commentators on MSNBC trying to spin this for obama and failing. It was clear to everyone that obama was out-classed tonight. He had the 'deer in the headlights' look most of the night. Romney was smooth and quick with answers. On the other hand obama was stuttering and grasping for answers. The voter panel chris matthews had on after the debate, 4 men and 4 women even said Romney won hands down. A couple said they voted for obama last time were not sure they would this time. When they said that, matthews started in on them.

I could not believe that matthews is doing a commerical for obama. Trying to veil it, but calling it "Leaning Forward". He has gone the way of Dan Rather during little bush's election...Crazy. So much for the un-bias media. It is sad to say that I am finding Fox New more balanced than MSNBC.

Stop living in Denial, folks! Romney had verifiable figures, examples and policies that trumped Obama hands down... The difference couldn't be more obvious... Romney made one excellent point... Obama has added more national debt to this nation than any prior administration, and that will only increase 1 Trillion per year over the next four years under Obama.. When I saw Obama cringe and his jaw clinch, I knew Romney hit the nail on the head.... Obama sitting there trying defend a growing national debt, private hand picked panel running Obama-Care.... Nope... Score this one for Romney!

Ok *Cracks Knuckles* Here we go... The one man who's going to stand up to the bigots.

Point #1) The whole Romney/Ryan 2012 for Real Americans line is pathetic.
I AM AN AMERICAN DAMNIT! A REAL AMERICAN WHO STANDS UP FOR PEOPLE AND THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE, MARRY WHO THEY PLEASE, AND EVERY RIGHT LISTED ON THE CONSTITUTION, (and yes bigots even the 2nd Amendment). SO DON'T YOU DARE NOT CALL ME A REAL AMERICAN.

As far as your constant insults and berating of the President of the United States, you might show a bit of respect, even if you don't like the guy, because if you truly are a "Real American" then you will note that this is the greatest country in the world and if you don't like it then rather than insulting and degrading him, say what you don't like about his policies like an educated American. You wonder why the rest of the world doesn't like this country? They actually tend to like Obama for the most part so you can't blame him. Its actually all of the bigots in this country who are crazy radicals like you guys insulting rather than making genuine critiques about what he has been doing in office. So before you start being your stereotypical Fox News listening, radicals why not listen to yourselves and start making educational conversation.

Point #2) I will admit a few things here. 1. I am a staunch liberal who is going to vote for Obama. 2. Mitt Romney actually won the debate tonight. I am not disputing it. However, he did open up a few discrepancies from his earlier statements, which disturbs me. How am I as an American voter supposed to understand where his policies stand if he keeps telling me different things every time he is on the air? Earlier I heard different policies than I do now. In addition, Romney has also released ABSOLUTELY NO specifics about any of his plans. Can you Republican voters name any of the loopholes he said he would close? I doubt it, because frankly he hasn't mentioned any.

Point #3) The math: How is Mitt Romney expecting us to pay for $4.8 trillion in tax deductions without cutting vital services. The loopholes he is telling us he is going to close have so far been non-existant. We have no real idea which loopholes he will close because he hasn't told us anything. So far the only things Romney told us he would do to help pay for these tax cuts, are: Eliminate (undisclosed) loopholes, Repeal Obamacare (which might actually hinder things), and kill PBS and our children's beloved Sesame Street and Big Bird. Why would you cut that??? It gets next to nothing in our budget and would destroy a bright future for many of our next generation.

Ok so my points about the debate are over.

Now admittedly there are a few things with Obama's job in the White House the first four years I have not liked. Among them, no additional funding for college students (like myself). College is getting really expensive here, If he does get re-elected I would like to see significantly more funding for higher education that will not only lower tuition costs, but shrink class sizes. Don't play russian roulette with our future. It is my generation which is going to be saddled with the $20 trillion in debt that is being left behind. Don't you think my interests should be represented as much as anyone else's? So, on the deficit, I have given up hope that it will be paid off before our generation takes the reigns, so I have this request. Give us the opportunity to pay it off by letting us get educated so we can have good paying jobs in the workplace. How is that supposed to happen when all the Republican party has done is cut funding to all vital services for education. It is depressing as heck.

Now, to foreign policy. It is about time that we pull ourselves out of wars before we waste more American lives from people my age to who are fighting (and dying) to keep the peace over there. The threat is mostly taken care of, and for that that remains... isn't that why we have the CIA and they're 15gazillion drones for? We are spending millions a day to fight a war that is un-winable, and sacrificing a large percentage of the population to do so. Veterans are coming back scarred from what they see, is this really the effect you want to have. I strongly disagree with any military action unless it is truly necessary. People need to look at the costs.

Ok so now that I've made my points. I will gladly shut up and leave you to criticize me in the most malicious way possible. But remember, the world is watching. Don't damage America's image. I am a real American, and I am voting for Obama.

Rant Over. Carry On... but first

One down two to go, Romney. But that’s not a surprise. The President has very little to talk about, he wasted most of his 4 years blaming someone else for the problems the country finds itself in. His closing statement says it all, you elect me and you’ll get much of the same for another 4 years!!!!

If you ask me, I would say that the President had no idea what he was saying. Just like his Vice President the other day!

Jim Spence you can just brawl yourself into WW3. Pathetic words. Careless, childish, bully. War is failure. Death. The end of civilized society. You contribute ideas that help no country or society. All you do is blame for this or that or what? Senseless. Oh sure you are going to start a spat with the smiling tiger too. I will not trust my life to you suicidal guys that walk toward atom bombs, you are antiquated and not needed any more.

On the other hand, Obama has achieved real things in his first term. That his responses were cautious and carefully thought out and gave good information on the topic of each question, that he was cut off with Romney accusing him for creating good things like financial reform to protect against loan sharks or green renewable energy for less pollution and more energy independence was obviously a revealing of Romney's own backwards perspectives. Give you all enough rope and you just hang yourselves with all your wrong remarks. President Obama had the civility and control to do just that and he busted Romney when he fired back on the insurance companies' outrageous profits, on the fact that the benefits and tax breaks need to stop for big oil, or were you only watching Mitt flip and do the big bop show of me this and me that and I promise you this?

WE already know one thing based squarely on his own words last week; he won't be keeping any promises to nearly fifty percent of Americans who are just ordinary folks who "sponge off the higher ups", excuse me, without any detail such as all the retired seniors who have paid into medicare and social security or disabled vets or children with handicaps. When was arrogance and snobbery any kind of virtue and did it ever occur to you that when trickle down stops working no one can be sponged off by corporate welfare because there will be no consumers left?

If you do your homework you can find some real accomplishments achieved by the man in the POTUS seat for The American People that are very factual and believable...a partial list of achievements and a brief explanation of each from "Obama's First Term Record Rivals FDR".

"This is only a partial list, but It’s also a remarkable list of accomplishments - probably the most expansive since Franklin Delano Roosevelt - and FDR had a Democratic Congress and merely had to contend with a Great Depression, not a war, in his first term." Karen Rubin

What's all this "FOR REAL AMERICANS" stuff? Are you saying that Democrats, or Independents, or for that matter anyone who isn't a Republican isn't a "real American"?

That's the problem with politics these days. All of you hate the other side for what reason? If you're a Democrat who bashes a Republican you're just as wrong as when a Republican bashes a Democrat. You're all fighting amongst yourself and all the while the politicians are loving it.

There used to be a time in this country where compromise for the greater good was something that wasn't thought upon as a dirty concept. America is never going to recover unless the Right AND the Left unite and try to move us forward. If all the hate keeps moving along then we're all doomed and none of this even matters.

    ROTFLMAO.

Everyone has two piles of steaming sh!t dumped in front of them and told to choose one. AND YOU Believe that you even have a choice.

The Rich Elitists of the Electoral College determine the President and Vice President January.

    Solutions not Excuses:

US Economy. Reinstate the US Laws that made Illegal the Causes of previous Depressions. Decrease the Current 35% Taxes on Businesses as stated by President Obama in his 2012 State of the Union Address to bring back the US Businesses from Overseas.

US Jobs. Stop President Clinton's Most Favored Trade Nation Status for China until they stop devaluing their Currency.

US Health Care. End President Obama's ACA, no not Budgeted for $2.1 Trillion Budget Deficit requiring the current Budget Cuts to previously Budgeted for Projects/Programs. Instate the President FDR Universal Health Care For All US Citizens, as done by getting the Insurance Corporations OUT of the Medical Profession, with the instant savings of a minimum of 80% for Medical Treatments. And yes, that includes getting the Insurance Corporations out of managing Medicare and all other US Government Health Care Programs so that they cannot overcharge the US Taxpayers to make profits of $17 Billion to $18 Billion per year mismanaging Medicare according to President Obama.

US Military: Kick out the overpaid too expensive US Civilians employed by the US Military, replace them with the below minimum wages US Military Personnel. All US Military Support Missions done by US Military Personnel like before. As promised (Verbal Contract) by President Obama, institute the Selective Service and or Mandatory Compulsory US Military Service to Force the 92% that have Never Served to do "Their Fair Share" to stop the repeated deployments of the 1% of US Citizens in the US Military as "US Military Service is a Civic Duty" and "US Citizenship is not an Entitlement" - Candidate Obama Presidential Debate with McPain.

"Obstructionist US Congress": Lame Excuse, as if the US President wants to be held 100% Responsible and 100% Accountable then to circumvent the US Congress "Will Of The People" (keep clicking "next"):

    http://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions

US Citizens Constitutional Rights: Get rid of President Obama's January 21, 2009 Patriot Acts that Eliminated US Citizens Constitutional Rights; make permanently Illegal President Obama's 2012 NDAA section of the US Military Indefinite Detentions of US Citizens.

Foreign Assistance: None, if they don't "Like" us or if any actions are taken against US Citizens or US interests. The excuse of someone else did that in your Sovereign Nation, is not acceptable, that is their internal problem to take care of. End the President Obama Secret Wars using Not Budgeted for Discretionary Spending.

United Nations: US withdraws in protest, until the Chinese and Russian Federation do "Their Fair Share" of UN Nation Building. No more use of the US Military as the UN's Military B!tches and UN's World Police as paid for by the US Taxpayers and the lives of the 1% of US Citizens of the US Military.

Illegal Aliens: Elimination of President Obama's April 2009 and August 2009 Policies of, "US Military will not be used to secure US Borders". President's Proposal to US Congress to pass into US Law, President Bush's Illegal Immigration Crisis Response Act of 2006 and a Federal US Law similar to California's Proposition 187 "US Citizens can only receive US Taxpayer Public Assistance of any Kind". Take seriously the previous Illegal Aliens (Citizens loyal to another Nation) as a National Security Threat since before WWII, with the implementation of the US Military to secure the US Borders and a larger scale version of President Eisenhower's Operation Wetback to apprehend and deport (no detentions) the over 23 Million Illegal Aliens at the US. This Nation (US) was built by Legal Immigrants NOT Illegal Aliens (still loyal to their Nation of Origin). See current and previous Reciprocal International Citizenship Treaties, Agreements, Laws pertaining to the children of Illegal Aliens born in the US, as previously determined not applicable to the US Constitutional Amendments as "Those Little Frauds" (fraud against the intent of the US Constitution and the Citizens of the US). (I know, give the excuse about the US Economy, sorry most US Fruits and Vegetables come from South and Central America. And stick the current Unemployed 52% of Teenagers of US Citizens back into those "Low Paid", "Entry Level", "No Benefits", etc. Jobs like before taken away by Illegal Aliens).

And yes, there are a heck of a lot more already researched solutions.

25Walker, you left-wingers always want right-wingers to show facts

    ozzy1957,

Other than facts, on what basis should our citizenry vote for a candidate?

The right gets dumber and dumber.

    you clowns just keep lying

Romney refuses to produce his tax returns. Why?

Because his previous tax returns will show that he has lied to the American people and possibly the SEC.

    I've seen this technique

Obama has outstanding economic, political and social achievements.

Factual presentation of Obama's victories is the reason why he will coast to victory on November 6, 2012.

    Maybe your just a sociopath

    "sociopath?"

Romney and Ryan will purge our population of the "undesirables" (the elderly, the sick, the poor, the struggling middle class.) You are unable to realize that this duo's brutal plans to decimate our population is sociopathic. Thus, you are too dense to be "saved" or educated.

Probably because it's not a lie at all. Just because you cannot understand a complex argument doesn't mean that it's a lie. It just means that you don't understand it. Nothing more.

    Bryon,

There is nothing complex about telling the truth. Romney is hiding his plans. Why? Because he will stroke the rich and economically clobber everyone else. By his own words he "won't worry about 47%" of our population.

Mitt is desperate for the Oval Office. Thus, the lies, and "flip flopping."

...in the next presidential debate, he will flip flop, again.

No on believs any of it

Scott-1352085, I'll buy that Mitt Romney is a sophist, but not using the modern definition. Check it on Wikipedia, the original definition is a wise one, or one who does wisdom. It was corrupted to mean specious or deceptive by those that disagreed with teaching only those that could pay.

It is my opinion that Mr. Romney's ideas, particularly the ones relating to building concensus on policy, show a wisdom that President Obama has cast aside in favor of his well intentioned, if misguided and authoritarian, policies. President Obama often stated that his biggest regret is not communicating his ideas and policies more clearly. If he had, perhaps there would not be such staunch opposition to his policies, enabling him to then build concensus rather than relying on partisanship.

So unless you're just an Obamabot the clear winner last night was Romney. Bill Maher even tweeted it looked like Obama needs a TelePrompTer.

So now the question is was it a game changer? The answer is yes! Romney last night showed America that he is not what has been portrayed by the media and Obama commercials, and that changes the game. Will he open some 7 point lead over Obama? No, but he proved that the narratives being pushed by the DNC and Main Stream Media are pure garabage.

The libs that keep talking about how Romney "kept interruping" should realize that if Obama started the segment, then Mitt should finish it - that is what is called "fair". You know, that word that Obama loves to use?

Romney did not "attack" Obama, what he did was call him on his lies and deceptions. And he did it politely and with class.

Unfortunately, the back and forth fighting about which "team" is better only illustrates the real problem here, which is the ineffective and broken two-party system that we have. Our country was not intended to be a two party system by our founding fathers, likely for this very reason: it causes the two sides to move further and further from the center and to only focus on making sure their party "wins the match" as opposed to focusing on what is in the best interests of the American people. And, to ensure they remain in power, the two parties need to constantly concern themselves with generating enough money to compete in these grand political matches, which causes the two parties to focus only on the needs of the large organizations that contribute to their campaigns as opposed to individual Americans. This needs to change before we can ever really get our government and country back on track. I urge everyone to check out the American Overhaul Act at www.americanoverhaulact.org, which proposes a set of Amendments that would make the changes that we need to get this country moving forward again.

LOVED how R$mney ......ONES HE USED with BAIN while he FIRED american workers and sent their jobs to other countries.

I have voted for several different parties in my 32 years of voting including Democrat, and Republican. What disturbs me is when people try to spin things that were good into something bad.

It seems to me that when Romney worked for Bain Capitol, he was working for the investors, and did a very good job for them.

People try to spin Romneys work there as something evil, but the reality is that Bain took American businesses that were struggling to survive, and brought them back to viability again. When companies survive, and thrive, they can soon hire American workers as they return to profitability.

When American companies fail, American workers lose their jobs. By keeping American businesses thriving, American jobs were saved, and jobs lost during restructuring are regained elsewhere.

On the debate: It is clear to me that Obama was lost without a teleprompter, and that Romney just did what he does as a profession. This was a walk in the park for him, Obama was sweating bullets because his thoughts were disorganized.

All in all, Romney clearly did much better overall despite Jims interruptions. That shows me he is organized, confidant, and doesn't need to hide behind teleprompters giving honest answers no matter how bad the pill is to swallow.

Romney just won my vote !

My message for Romney / Ryan Supporters. - The Chicago machine when in danger will attack viciously! Be prepared for the Chicago thugs to have surrogates with no ties to the campaign go after Romney hard.

My message for Obama / Biden Supporters. - This is what happens when you never challenge Obama. The media and his supporters have held Obama up as if he is perfect and never made him answer any tough questions, and have never challenged him on anything. He came into this debate unprepared because it has been four years since the last time he had to face someone who didn't kiss his ass. Last time Obama had no record so he didn't have to defend anything, just attack. This time Obama has a record, and his attacks on Romney look completely false after the real Romney was finally given a chance to tell the American people who he is and he did not look like the guy who is portrayed in the commercials.

Romney definitely came off better than be has been during the campaign, but he still needs to lose the smirk and start talking about how he's going to bring jobs for US Citizens back to the USA. I liked the tone of the debate and how they kept referring to how both parties need to work together.

Our economic problems didn't happen overnight. It's been happening over the past 15-20 years, but the economy was kept going by middle class Americans tapping into the equity on their homes until they were completely tapped out.

Both parties have sold out the bulk of the American citizens, who they're supposed to represent, by allowing the "out-sourcing" floodgates to open wider and wider without taking any sensible measures to stem the tide. (Under Clinton jobs to China, Under Bush I & II influx of illegals or cheap easily abused labor into the US and jobs to Mexico/NAFTA) Our leaders are elected by the Citizens of the United States of America to represent the interests of those citizens and the country itself. They are NOT elected by the Global Market Place or foreign citizens!

It shouldn't be all about Democrats or Republicans! It should be about doing the right thing for our country and the majority of its citizens. I consider myself an independent voter, but going back to the Reagan days and with the only exception having been Perot, I’ve always voted Republican. But all this single-minded, left versus right, ideological one dimensional bull has got to go! This is the problem with our country. It shouldn't be about Democrats or Republicans! It should be about Americans, especially our elected officials, doing the right thing for our country and its citizens.

We need whoever wins the next election to Start Protecting American Jobs and do whatever it takes to bring back the jobs they let go. They've got to give us somebody who will stand up for the American people.

We need to bring manufacturing back to the United States of America and both parties are ignoring tariffs as a way to level the playing field, raise money and bring jobs back home. Let's guess why. Oh that's right, tariff is a dirty word. Hum, maybe it’s that our so called leaders (political leaders) are beholden to the same people who are exporting our jobs.

I guess we should keep letting Corp Boards, Wall Street, CEOs and Foreign Lobbyists promote sending US jobs to countries where they work for slave wages, no benefits, no OSHA safety standards or no real environment regulations. How's that been working for us?

The so called “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field. Companies may have made higher profits by "out sourcing", but they've been putting middle class Americans who are a good part of the world’s customer base out of work. I’m not a lefty or member of any union. I run a business that employs over 20 people and produces products that are purchased by customers that do manufacturing and packaging. I’m just an average Joe, but I've been saying this for more than 10 years now. If I can see it, so can our so called leaders (political leaders) who are beholden to the same people who are exporting our jobs.

We need to add tariffs that are proportionate to the inequities in wages and regulations in the country where the goods were produced and or where we’re importing them from. We could then use the money raised by these tariffs to help companies build state of the art manufacturing plants here in the USA, which would create more jobs here at home for US citizens, which would then in turn increase our income tax revenue.

The people with all of the excuses as to why we can’t or aren’t willing to manufacture products here in the US are the same people who have provided us with the thinking that’s gotten us into this mess in the first place.

Over the past 15-20 years, I've seen too many of our customer's close manufacturing plants here in the USA and move those plants to different countries, decimating entire areas here in OUR COUNTRY. And I'm not alone. Returning jobs to American Citizens will provide income tax revenue to OUR Government versus our government having to pay unemployment benefits to those who would be jobless instead.

Bringing manufacturing back to the US not only gives jobs to the US citizens who would be working in those manufacturing facilities, but to the people that would be working in the businesses that would spring up all around them. This should also include the safe harvesting, production and distribution of our own natural energy here in the USA, rather than paying for fuel from countries where they hate us. Let’s keep that money and those jobs here in the US.

These so-called “free trade agreements” have to go. It was obvious when they were passing these agreements as to what was going to happen and sure enough it did. Our leaders had to have known this as well when they were passing these bills. It’s just common sense. We also need to bring customer support services back to the United States of America and staff them with employees who are US Citizens.

The “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field! The whole idea of the tariffs is so we can pay our factory workers a decent wage and not be blown out by these other countries where they don’t play by the same rules.

We may have to pay a bit more for products made here in the USA by US citizens, but at least we'll still have jobs and a future for our children.

The bottom line is that “Our Government” has to protect American industry and the jobs that those industries provide. If they do that, the rest will take care of itself.

And that's just what we got, "a big performance." No substance, no specifics, no nuthin.

With two debates to go, I'm thinking we may eventually hear something concrete from Citizen Romney. But, then again, I'd give that the same chance as seeing The Great Pumpkin rise out of his patch on Halloween.

Create jobs and energy independance - what about the pipeline? Cut the defecit? - or add 5 trillion-$51k per citizen or $141k PER TAXPAYER - with no end in sight - it goes on and on and you just continue to buy into it. MAYBE Romney isn't the best answer to our problems, but Obama has already PROVEN he isnt. HOPE AND CHANGE? Yeah right, I am out of both.

You need to go read some more. He has consistently stated the same position on federal taxes. Federal regulations: he has stated over (too much) regulations harm business - and they do. He has never once stated he was against all federal regulations. Businesses want a level and fair playing field, where the rules keep it fair for all. Too much regulations burden businesses where they cannot compete or survive. Regulations do not do anything if they are not enforced.

Romney needed to change things up, so he did what he does best, he pandered.

He had to move to the center to change things, so he pandered, he turned from conservative to a rino.

Now, true conservatives and the rest of the American public can see him for what he is, he will say anything, do anything to get elected.

I just finished watching the debate. I thought President Obama looked well, Presidential. Romney looked like a used car salesman, trying to get you to believe him, too close the sale. I don't believe him, I can just see what will happen if he is elected. Tax cuts for the rich, health care for the rich, food for the rich. You can't have a 5 Trillion dollar tax cut plus Bush's tax cut and come out ahead without raising taxes and cutting loop holes big time. The middle class will really suffer. We will lose the home owner tax credit, cuts to education, environmental protection and more. All the while the Kock brothers, big bankers, rich wall street guys, and all the people at Romney's income level, they will make a killing. While the middle class, like the Titanic, slowly sinks beneath the waves with it's belly ripped open. That's the big question finely, who do you believe.

I also remember the 80's and the effect of trickle down economics. I too lost my job as result of that. Romney is proposing the same program but doesn't want the same moniker for it because he knows for those of in the middle class who are old enough to remember what happened it is a death blow to any candidate.

Romney looked angry but then would put that grin back on his face. I got the impression the President was expecting to debate the Romney who has been campaigning as a republican and was just sitting back taking in the Democrat who showed up in the form of Romney tonight. I think he could have hit Romney harder on points like the 47%. I just kept wondering what all those high priced donors were thinking when they heard half of what Romney said. Also, claiming that people who got money for green energy were supporters of the Presidents campaign? Millions of people give a few dollars to the Presidents campaign not a few giving millions.

Obama didn't have a clue, he rambled about his auntie and his grannie and he couldn't defend the programs he fought sooooo hard for and...his record is crap. Fast and Furiousm, Benghazi, triple digits food stamps, welfare, joblessness...the Obamabots are living a fantasy life and it shows. The reality was Obama got schooled tonight.

Now perhaps Obama will do his homework and prep for the next debate, it may work out better for him, however, the impression I got was that Obama is tired and his heart isn't in the game anymore.

Moondog, If you want Obama back in, be sure to vote Libertarian. That's what your vote for Johnson will do. It isn't realistic at this point to vote for Johnson because he just isn't going to win. Sorry.

    Witty One

A lot of people lost their jobs in the 80's because of the policies from 1977 - 1981. Reagan Policies (what he could get passed in congress) took effect in 1982. It takes about 18 months for tax cuts and regulation cuts to take effect. It also took him 3 years to get a favorable judgement on the dumping of Japanese steel in our country. A lot of good that did, because the steel industry had already been decimated.

SO ROMNEY SHOWED HE WAS ROMNEY TONIGHT< ON BOTH SIDES OF EVERY ISSUE!

HAS ROMNEY SHOWN ANY LEADERSHIP SINCE REPUBLICONS ANNOUNCED HIM AS THEIR CANDIDATE? HAS HE PUBLICLY INSTRUCTED REPUBS TO PASS ANY BILLS THAT WOULD BE GOOD FOR AMERICA?

ROMNEY HIRED 17 OF 24 ADVISERS FROM BUSH/CHENEY REGIME BECAUSE ROVE TOLD HIM TO! ROMNEY IS ONLY THE STRAWMAN FOR HIS LEADER ROVE WHO WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN LYING INTO IRAQ WAR FOR PROFITS AND WRECKING THE ECONOMY!

Did Romney try and help out the vets when repubs blocked the Vets job bill last week? NOPE!

Did Romney try and help American workers get American jobs back when repubs blocked the bill to remove tax breaks from companies who took jobs overseas? NOPE!

Did Romney try and help American workers get their jobs back when repubs blocked the bill that would give tax breaks to companies who would bring back the jobs to America? NOPE!

Did Romney try and help the first responders to 911 healthcare bill when repubs blocked and voted against that bill? NOPE!

Well hell you can see where this is going....so let's just stop right here. The strawman has shown no leadership whatsoever. NONE! He has done nothing for America but drain jobs away from hard working Americans. He wants to kill Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Post Office. Mitt wants to dismantle and sell off America to the highest bidder and run the money offshore to avoid paying taxes.

WHY WOULD WE WANT ROVE/BUSH/CHENEY UNDER STRAWMAN ROMNEY IN THE WHITE HOUSE AGAIN?

Vote President Obama/Biden and Team Democratic party 2012! REAL LEADERS!

He's flustered and angry and we've only just started the first debate.

How funny. The whole MSNBC crew thought Mitt performed brilliantly. They don't agree with his positions but they think he handled himself beautifully. Ed Schultz said the exact opposite of what you said. Ed Schultz of all people specifically said Romney didn't come across as looking angry. In fact nobody is saying what you said. That makes you a demagogue, how unfortunate for you but on a positive note at least you know what you are.

Be careful about the golden spoon in Mitt's mouth..

Some of us work hard for a living. Not Mitt... He makes everyone else work hard for a living and then DESTROYS THEIR JOB! How bout those current tax returns... The ones that show the killer instinct to destroy American jobs!!! 2010 and 2011... THey're due Mitt, in case you've lost them again, already twice before!

Put them out there Mitt, you're the one who says you don't destroy jobs for Americans, but you've put 1,000's out of jobs on your own!

Money grubbing is ugly. That is Mitt. At least Obama has given us all a fair shake after GW Bushes implosion and total bankroll rip-off!!!

Tonight I listened to the debate and this is what I heard - 1. Mitt Romney is not against health insurance he is against FEDERAL health insurance and believes this should be something done by the individual states therefore allowing the STATES to shape a plan to fit their citizen's needs, not a one size fits all plan. 2. Mitt Romney does believe in alternative energy, just not giving away 92 billion(?) to companies that go belly up. However, he also knows that these alternative energy sources will take time and meanwhile there is a need for oil and coal. These will also create more jobs. 3. Mitt Romney did outline what he wanted to accomplish if elected and what he said was that how this could best be done was by sitting down with BOTH democrats and republicans to work out the details. This is a much better approach in MY OPINION as there may be a better way that gives a little to both sides in solving an issue. Finally 4, When speaking of regulations he does not want to repeal Dodd/Frank, he does want it to be less vague and as he mentioned, banks might be more inspired to make mortgage loans IF they knew what the rules/penalties are.

Barrack Obama did in fact come out flat. He spent most of his time looking down like he was not paying attention, his demeanor was not that of the confident, smiling incumbent with 4 years of experience. He appeared to spend most of the time on the defensive with random attacks. Unfortunately for him not much of it stuck.

So, who won tonight? Party line Democrats will still vote democrat, Party line Republicans will still vote republican and that small demographic of undecided voters, well they are probably still undecided but hopefully gaining a clearer picture of what each candidate stands for. Personally, I will be grateful when 7 November gets here - no more negitive ads, name calling... (until the next election - lol)

I sort of wonder if I watched the same debate as everyone else...I thought Obama was a bit hurky-jerky and didn't really make any statements that were overly impressive or unexpected. I though Romeny did what he has been doing which promise everything and make dish-watery statements about how great America is without actually saying how he would do it. Obama looked out of practice and Romney looked like he had been pumped (yes with an air pump) of talking points to pour out that he the pressure was causing it sto spill out uncontrollably and awkwardly at every point he opened his mouth. I thought neither of them made any serious headway and that the whole thing was as if it never happened. Obama still looks mired in a mess that is the US economy post collapse and Romney looked rigid and full of promises to everyone and anyone. Total waste of a debate. No one won and no one lost.

        #2.60 - Thu Oct 4, 2012 7:42 AM EDT

I'm not sure what you can really get out of this debate, nor do I understand how at this point, anyone could make their choice one way or the other on these debates. It will always be the same, democrats saying every good thing is the democrats doing and all bad the republicans, and the republicans blaming all bad on dems and taking credit for all good. All depends who's lies fit your own personal beliefs. I'd say Romney was more prepared and "won" the execution of the debate, however neither of them did very favorably with the bi-partisan fact checkers. We've learned nothing. The same things both candidates said are the same things you can just go to their websites and read. Both of them generally said things that either weren't true or very creative math to otherwise potentially good numbers/facts.

Mitt Romney, a man who can smile and lie at the same time. Of course he appeared more at ease then the president. He has no conscious. He's in good company. Adolf Hitler was a charismatic speaker too.

If Mitt is allowed to lie his way into the white house, he could well start WW III. It's not possible for Mitt to accomplish his objectives without the complete destruction of the middle class. He wants nothing less then a two class society, the filthy rich, and the very poor.

Pat Boston MA.Romney had to get attention this evening. He was desperate and it showed. People who are fact checking this debate are saying Romney is lying his backside off.

And what debate were you tuned into? Certainly not the same debate that the largest contributor of an Obama Super Pac, Bill Maher.

@billmaher i can't believe i'm saying this, but Obama looks like he DOES need a teleprompter

@billmaher Obama made a lot of great points tonight. Unfortunately, most of them were for Romney

@billmaher Romney looks more confident and energetic - he's about a minute away from holding Obama down and cutting his hair. This better be ropeadope

As for factcheck saying "Romney is lying". FALSE. Factcheck never uses the word "lying". And if you look at the 7 pages, looks like Obama has more exaggerated statements in the debate then Romney.

It was Obama's job to counter those exaggerated statements and he didn't. Didn't come close to doing so. Whereas Romney countered everyone of Obama's exaggerated statements one by one. Obama came unprepared to this debate because in his eyes he's got this elections sewn up. Well, news flash, bad mistake on his part and he will probably pay for it.

Mr. President Obama did come prepared for the debate. He has practiced for the debate and even hired mentors. It was not Mr. President Obama's fault that he forgot his teleprompter and that he had so many problems left over from the previous presidency, or that Mr. President Obama's drugs kicked in at the wrong time.

Mitt Romney did and excellent job of looking Mr. President Obama in the eye and just telling the truth that the last four years was a total failure. Money that went to bankrupt green companies that should have been used takng care of housing and veterans. I honestly believe that Mitt Romney will be a much better president when it comes to the United States and the economy, including the raising the standard of living for the low (like me) and medium income people that are wanting to work, but can not find a job due to the economy.

Whatever Romney's song and dance was about, the facts remain the same. This is not about who struts about and who has the loudest mouth, who interrupts or dominates a debate, this is about who will lead this country. Pick a fast talker backed up by no experience of sitting in the POTUS seat, who flip flops and gets coached using the coach's new lines, and "the me this and me thats" How can one trust a complete difference in big ideas that change from one week to another?
Obama just was observing Mitt hang himself with his own babble and being cautious in his answers and explanations which were actually good. The media guys are briefly charmed and at first just looking at debate skills and performance and Romney is a good act. However, this is not a popularity contest. This is about who will lead this nation for the next four years and who will inherit some critical ongoing situations that can have a huge impact on the well being of the citizens of the U.S.A. Some facts...

            From Think Progress:
            http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2012/10/04/958801/at-last-nights-debate-romney-told-27-myths-in-38-minutes/

When asked if government has a role in improving public education, Mitt Romney told the audience that the federal government can play a positive role. But earlier this year, in closed-door meetings with donors, Romney said that he would “either consolidate with another agency, or perhaps make it a heck of a lot smaller.”

Romney says he wants “good teachers” and touts Massachusetts’ stellar schools. But Romney has said he wants to slash public school teacher jobs, as budget cuts on the state and local level have forced schools to shed massive amounts of teachers. His surrogate, former governor John Sununu (R-NH) later confirmed that Romney wants “fewer teachers.

Romney suggested capping the amount of tax deductions that an individual can use at “$25,000″ or “$50,000,” saying “pick a number.” Yesterday, he suggested $17,000, a level at which his tax plan still doesn’t add up.

Romney says his plan deals with pre-existing conditions, but it would only keep insurers from taking away coverage, doing nothing for Americans with pre-existing conditions who are not able to get an insurance plan. As a result, 72 million people would be unable to obtain insurance, more than if Obamacare had never been passed.

Romney claims that Obamacare will lead to lower health care quality for Americans. But multiple studies and even top private insurance officials have confirmed that Obamacare’s incentives for preventive and coordinated care are already encouraging efficiency in the health care system.

Romney says he didn't raise taxes to pay for healthcare reform.
That’s because federal government subsidies paid for large portions of the plan.

Romney just unleashed a long attack about Obamacare. Here are the facts you should know about the legislation.

            1. It creates jobs. Obamacare isn’t a job killer like Romney says it is. The Center for American Progress estimates that Obamacare will create around 4 million jobs across different sectors of the economy.

            2. Seniors aren’t affected by Obama’s Medicare cuts -
Obamacare “cut Medicare reimbursements to hospitals and insurers, not benefits for older Americans.” Repealing the savings — as Romney wants to do — would hasten the insolvency of Medicare by eight years.

            3. People have already saved money as a result of Obamacare. 16 million seniors are receiving preventive benefits without deductibles or co-pays and are saving at least $3.9 billion on prescription drugs. Millions of young adults now have insurance coverage and are staying on their parent’s health care plan.

            4. Obamacare isn’t responsible for increasing health care costs
Health costs have been increasing before Obamacare became law and they will rise after it is fully implemented. But its cost control mechanisms will slow the rate of growth over time.

Despite his Massachusetts plan having been the basis for Obamacare and Romney’s praise for his own health care program, the former governor wants to repeal President Obama’s national health care reform plan. This would leave 72 million people without insurance under Romney’s plan.

Romney’s plan to repeal Obama care will actually increase the federal deficit by$109 billion over the 2013–2022 period” and lead 30 million of Americans to lose insurance. Unfortunately, under Romney’s plan 72 million would lose health coverage.

Romney has called Dodd-Frank "a killer" for small banks. In fact, "the bulk of the bill's new regulations apply only to a few dozen of the largest [bank], each holding more than $50 billion in assets."

            ##########

What is so bad about protecting Americans from loan sharks?
Obama got him on many points actually, including the reply about the outrageous profits being made by medical insurance middlemen, oil benefits and tax breaks that need to go, his inconsistency on Obamacare and flip flopping on his own Romneycare for the state of Massachusetts and the statement about "too good"( to be true). For the voters who are not up on current events, Obama may have been to subtle in his coolness but Obama was not insulting our intelligence. He was speaking to intelligent people who know and have cared to look up the facts already.
He chastised Romney on insurance and Romney's eyes got very narrow showing guilt as if he had been caught. Obama spoke to the People. Romney shouted at and tried to dominate both Mr. Leherer and Obama which is apparent in the measurement of dominance in conversational interaction, he was verbally intimidating and his body language was obviously pushy.
Romney put on a good show but the content of what he was saying was his downfall because of his contradictions to recent stances he had taken in his own words in recent speeches, an example is the 47% statement. Romney's lies, flip flopping, limited biased viewpoints, closed-mindedness and arrogance is glaring. For a guy who is losing and desperate in this debate he over-reacts and tries too hard in his dramatic emphasizing. Upon a second look at content Romney has clearly made untrue statements and bullied his way for attention.

            http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/03/14207584-truth-squad-the-debate?lite

Those who are not aware of the facts of Obama's achievements, those who are charmed by Romney's appearance on the surface, who vote based on first impression and emotion, not facts, knowledge, or what is good for the American People, will be fooled again the same way they were before by following their wishful thinking, but deceived by the Republican profiteers and charmers.
They will believe and buy into the false promises, and they will elect a leader who will end up going against their own best interests if they are not in the 1% or the elite wannabe club. This will be worse than Bush 2 with a Republican majority in Congress and their profits will continue to be made by draining the middle class and taking away benefits from the elderly, unfortunate poor and handicapped. That is class warfare and class distinction by the power elite, a prejudice not based on race but on riches and who has and who has not the Mammon. Think this over and double check facts, Romney clearly lost the debate when it comes to content according to the fact checking and the truth squad, and Romney has no record of achievements from the last four years. The media narrators needed time and so did Obama, erring to caution and consideration of ones words is what is needed in a wise and informed leader, and this was good - not bad, because now the big picture is dawning for many and the glamor and authoritarian intimidation of Romney's show is wearing off. Back to reality. Voters! Please do not be deceived again!
Check the facts!!! For reference, some of Obama's achievements for The American People in spite of obstruction that are recorded, listed and explained can be easily viewed at these links:

Romney Won Using a Debate Technique Called the Gish Gallop (Newsvine)
              http://redsfan.newsvine.com/_news/2012/10/04/14226423-romney-won-using-a-debate-technique-called-the-gish-gallop

As fact checkers busily highlight the myriad number of lies and distortions offered by Mitt-Etch-A-Sketch-Romney during last night's debate, and the spinners spin their polls with impunity, I find it interesting that the debate tactic itself has not yet been discussed nor properly analyzed. In fact, the lies and distortions offered by Romney in last night's debate are the very ESSENCE of his tactic -- and is therefore quite pertinent to the discussion. Romney used a debate tactic known as the Gish Gallop.

The Urban Dictionary defines the Gish Gallop thusly:

Named for the debate tactic created by creationist shill Duane Gish, a Gish Gallop involves spewing so much bull@!$%# in such a short span on that your opponent can’t address let alone counter all of it. To make matters worse a Gish Gallop will often have one or more 'talking points' that has a tiny core of truth to it, making the person rebutting it spend even more time debunking it in order to explain that, yes, it's not totally false but the Galloper is distorting/misusing/misstating the actual situation. A true Gish Gallop generally has two traits.

              1) The factual and logical content of the Gish Gallop is pure bull@!$%# and anybody knowledgeable and informed on the subject would recognize it as such almost instantly. That is, the Gish Gallop is designed to appeal to and deceive precisely those sorts of people who are most in need of honest factual education.

              2) The points are all ones that the Galloper either knows, or damn well should know, are totally bull@!$%#. With the slimier users of the Gish Gallop, like Gish himself, its a near certainty that the points are chosen not just because the Galloper knows that they're bull@!$%#, but because the Galloper is deliberately trying to shovel as much bull@!$%# into as small a space as possible in order to overwhelm his opponent with sheer volume and bamboozle any audience members with a facade of scholarly acumen and factual knowledge.

                Obama = income - $4,000 lower.

Obama = a greater increase in Health Insurance.

I just got my notice of Health Insurance premiums. Until this year, and that covers 25 years, I never had an increase over 20%. I always was between 12 - 14% with the exception of twice reaching 20%. The last 3 years 18%, 18%, 29%.

BTW, why is Romney all of a sudden sticking up for middle class America when he already wrote off 47% of the country??? Talk about LIAR!!!!

The alleged 47% are the working poor, low income federal income earners, and the deadbeats (welfare community) are the portion of the USA. The Middle Income Federal Income Earners are in the 53%.

Any day Romney doesn't step in it is a good day for him. I hope he enjoyed himself and I want him to be just as hyper..I mean dominant in a town hall format. I can't wait for him to tell us how he cares about our suffering when someone asks the 47% question and he answeres that he likes the questioner and Big Bird too. If he has been drawn out tonight all the better.

Usually in a recover the average income INCREASES instead of Declining.

Wow. Romney delivered a beat down tonight. I wrote down the things that the President said and I can't believe how many Lies he told i.e. the President said Medicare Advantage would cost less than private insurance. If you check it out, private insurance is usually cheaper that Medicare Advantage. I know my insurance is cheaper.

The President said he has cracked down on Wall Street. Fact is: He has told the Attorney General not to prosecute any brokerage involved in the meltdown.

The President has talked about jobs he has created. Where, Overseas? The President has sent out memos to major contractors(lockheed Martin) to lay off thousands of workers but to wait unil the election is over before giving the workers their pink slip.

Sorry Mr President we don't need 4 more years of lies, high unemployment and no security for our diplomats.

BTW, Mr President we don't appreciate how you will cut veterans benefits if re-elected. So I guess you will have to join the 23 million unemployed Americans that you care so much about.

Well, he's a bully only because your guy is a wimp, someone who doesn't seem to care about the job he's wanted to get re-elected for. You evidently like the idea of someone who rolls over when challenged. Obama could have prepped, he should know his policies, he pushed for them and railroaded the country to get them in place, the only embarrassment is your guy's job performance, sorry.

texastornado55; that's a good point. I just checked online and here in Maryland there is a cost of $24 for a photo i.d. at the motor vehicles department, a little less than a drivers license, but not by much. If a state is going to require photo i.d. for people who don't have a drivers license, it should be no-charge since they are requiring it. Then there is the question of getting those seniors to the DMV to get the i.d. And come to think of it, it's not just seniors. Plenty of younger people live in large cities and don't have a car; so no drivers license.

Sounds like a lot of trouble now that I think about it.

This is a poor debate construct.

The real issues facing us can't be logically discussed by either man. Both men are failing to give cogent points, because a discussion of the real underlying problems facing us, are being replaced by a ridiculous reiteration of minucia, without the broad underlying differences being aired first. Blah blah blah, without the overwhelming obvious philosophical differences being debated first. Another insult to educated America, while pandering to the most cynical of concepts; Often incorrect detail, without a foundation being laid. Boo Jim Lehrer and whoever else decided on this ridiculous format.

You know Ozzy, when accusing someone of not being able to think for themselves, you really shouldn't follow it up by stating someone else's thoughts. Seriously. Try using logic instead of semi-clever quotations. There is nothing wrong with citing someone else's opinion unless it is preceded with demeaning remarks about people doing the exact same thing.

After all, there are more women than men in this country, and I believe a good many people in this country are still Democrats who actually will vote for Obama. And since Romney alienated 47% of our nation already, well, let's think about this some more.

Being a lefty liberal, I can say that "Romney won hands down". In style and in reeling out point#1, point#2, etc. Obama at one time said I have a $4 trillion deficit reduction plan in my web site. Duh!! People came to listen to your debate so that you can explain it to them, and not look at your web site. Few more points:

                      1. I was astonished/stunned that Obama could not defend his #1 legislative achievement, Affordable Healthcare Act, better against this guy Mitt. Obama, henceforth, should stop saying that Obamacare is modeled after MA Romneycare. Stop that bull@!$%#.
                      2. Obama should clearly understand that people are looking for jobs, jobs, and more jobs. He has to have a narrative that ties everything he wants to do in the next 4 years into a giant job creation machine. I was amazed that Obama didn't understand that before coming to the debate.
                      3. Deficit. Couldn't defend himself well on this. In the next debate, he should put out facts that Bush tax cuts I and II and two unfunded wars (give the numbers, please like Bill Clinton did), and 2004 prescription benefits bill Bush passed, were the ones contributing to the current deficit we have.
                      4. Obama scored very bad in defending Dodd-Frank bill and couldn't articulate that under the previous administration, lack of regulations brought us into this financial mess we had in the first place. Obama could not diligently articulate the positive aspects of this financial regulation bill. Too bad. Romney kept repeating the lie that the bill perpetuates the "too-big-to-fail" policy of the previous government and Obama could not refute that effectively (Frank Dodd does the opposite).
                      5. On the education side, Romney has repeatedly mentioned to his donor audience in May 2012 that he would reduce the size of the education dept and now in the debate he said that he would NOT reduce the funding for education. Obama could not point out this inconsistency.
                      6. Why didn't Obama bring the 47% issue? He lost big time on not bringing that up.
                      7. Lastly, Obama's body language was not good and at times he looked impatient and all those facial expressions, not good.

                      8. $716 Billion efficiency gains in the Medicare as part of Obamacare. Hulla luya! Obama could not explain that in layman's terms.

Romney, all lies and lies and reversing himself on the $5 trillion tax cut. Hope Obama does a better job in the next debates.

Pretty good analysis there. What you may begin to understand is that Obama really doesn't understand or grasp the actual ramifications of many of the policies and programs that have happened under his watch. Hell, how many pages in Dodd-Franks? Obama let Reid and Pelosi and a few others cobble together legislation that sounded good but didn't hold up too well under scrutiny. Look at Solyndra, he didn't bother checking into the companie's viability, he let some of his staff handle that. It is apparent that Obama relies far too much on people like Jarret.

When you have a president who lets his little minions make policy decisions while he mouths soundbites on programs like the View and Letterman, you have a man who enjoys the trappings but not the responsibility of the office. Obama is a good front man, he's great with crowds and a likeable guy, however, likeability isn't the key factor in governing and what Obama demonstrated this evening is that he isn't real keen for the real work that goes with the job. If he really wanted to be re-elected he'd have done better, prepped better and had his answers lined up, it's not hard to figure out what the topics for discussion are going to be.

You are all frightening as hell. Romney supporters blather out "facts" about the bad economy and blame them all of Obama and say that he is a failure. Obama voters spew equally questionable facts about Romney and stick to Obama. Then other morons go on about fact checking the fact checkers and in the end, not one person here (in many cases me too) have any idea any more what "facts" are valid and what is not. Romney supporters won't consider that not everything bad might not have anything to do with Obama or be that way for reasons beyond Obama because they want to believe Romney is the answer. I have a harder time suggesting that Obama supporters are wrong to want to try and stick with him because at least Obama is not promising that everything will be sunshine and roses with no down side like Romney but Obama doesn't look like a shining beacon of leadership either. The greatest problem in what I read is that supporters on both side have lost sight of the fact that they are both just spewing out talking points given to them that they want to believe so badly that there is no longer and critical consideration if they make sense or seem plausible. The debate was a waste of time. Both sides have decided on talking points and just hammer away at them regardless of what the other says. Romney looks stiff and says nothing in detail and Obama looks irritated that he has to stand there and explain anything...in the end I guess I can't blame Obama. People are hearing only what they want and it matters not an once what reality is or where blame really lies. And the responses to posts are always the same...another right or left idiot laying out a list of "facts" detailing all the failures and pinning them to the opponent and then the other side says it is all lies and debunked...the cycle repeats and narry a person learns a thing.

Two more to go so no way we can call the fight yet...but a great round 1 for Mitt.

I know that Nancy Pelosi proposed a bill that would provide tax breaks for companies that returned jobs to America from overseas, and eliminated tax breaks for outsourcing.

                        Republicans rejected that proposal.

They had complete control of the government for the first 2 years and could have passed just about anything. To use the excuse that "we owned both houses and the white house but didn't have a supermajority so those dastardly republicans could have had a filibuster" is a pathetic excuse. They could have passed anything they wanted in the first 2 years. But waited until they could blame someone else.

Thinker,....ET AL.... the 'dems' may have had the majority but you seem to forget the part where some of those 'dems' were actually democrats in name only...or DINOs. They view themselves as conservadems. One could discribe these dinos as republicans who would not get elected as republicans in their states so they run as democrats but vote republican, thus that is why the republicans could get their way by fillibustering, by requiring a supermajority for bills to be passed. The republicans fillibustered everything every way they knew how and even added poison pills to bills so that the bills by the dems would not or could not be passed.

If anyone think that the republicans presenting over 300 anti-reproductive rights bills as 'jobs bills' since 2010-2012 plus the House of Representatives in Congress under the leadership of the republicans - as they are in the majority at this time- , was in session only 2 weeks per month plus vacation time, plus holidays etc. Think anyone could work for any other employer like that and still get paid or retained in their job?

Romney won the toss and elected to have the President answer/speak first, then all he Ronmey did was say the opposite of or copy what the president stated from the look of things. Romney even tried to insinuate that the president a liar.

Romney came off as a typical loud fast talking, pushy obnoxious no new ideas or policies know nothing T'repconservadino imo. Having listened carefully not much to nothing was learned from Romney that was anything new. His 20% across the board tax cuts is stupid and does not make sense imo. Top tax rate is 35% if I am not mistaken. If you minus 20% that would lower the top rate to 15%. How would that help the country to pay down the deficit?

Now T'Guilliani is on on msnbc being the nasty T'obnoxious know nothing that he usually is these days imo, with his old 'teleprompter' crap accusation just like some on these boards. Made one wonder if he was going to do the 'birther' thing too... LOL

These news Talking heads need to think before they critique the POTUS' performance imo. How they would deal with issues are easy for them to state, but they are not the sitting POTUS who still have to keep his calm and cool under pressure no matter what- even in a debate-, as the world is watching him more than they are watching Romney, as what the POTUS says/opines may just affect them and their countries too imo.

                        Oh whatevva.....

Obama lost the debate because, without his props and the media propping him up, he is an empty suit. He cannot defend his actions or his policies, if they were working he could defend them, however, they aren't working and....Romney should have controlled the debate, that is the point, you debate to WIN, you don't debate to look like a gentleman, you debate to WIN. There has been a comment where someone has said they've been in business for 25 years and don't understand what a tax break is for those who take jobs overseas. That tax provision has been in place for decades, and is written as a foreign aid type intention. It really just rewards those who don't want to invest in this country. This person must have been under a rock for 25 years.

                        That was measured.

                        Goals Romney had to meet.

First, The correctly measured response. Too hard, would be too disrespectful, to soft and the points fall short. I'd say mostly achieved.

Second, don't let the moderator run him over. I'd say achieved.

There are hardcore partyliners and they will vote the party regardless of how bad the party is. The buzz is happening now and the upswing is on Romney. At least Romney prepared, Obama sure as hell didn't. If this is some wierd campaign strategy, perhaps hoping to make Obama look like the underdog, or perhaps make Romney overconfident, it will need a new and revitalized Obama for the next debate.

What Romney did do tonight was restore confidence in him, how long it lasts only the next debate will tell. Obama does have a rather crappy record he's running on, only the party faithful are going to vote for him, look at how they're reacting now, they are attempting to bolster their guy by bashing Romney. Nothing new except their guy has never faced a serious contender, perhaps the fix is in and he knows it, no matter how poorly he performs, he's gonna get elected because the game will somehow be rigged in his favor.

I think it's hilarious that, in general, people who were for Romney to begin with see him as winning the debate and vice versa. None of them has an open mind to actually try and listen to what the other is saying. I can't see the value of these debates except for the few independents who haven't made up their minds yet. It's just a great big photo op for both of them.

Romney was referring to Massachusetts' high school system, which ranks among Japan and Singapore, and strongly leads the nation (Vanhoenacker).

Here's a quote from an article from the Slate, the link is at the bottom:

And most of the world. According to a 2011 Harvard study, while reading proficiency in Mississippi is comparable to Russia or Bulgaria, Massachusetts performs more like Singapore, Japan, or South Korea. Often better: Massachusetts students rank fifth in the world in reading, lapping Singapore and Japan, and needless to say, every state in the union. In math, Massachusetts slots in a global ninth, ahead of Japan and Germany. (Some international educational studies rank Shanghai and Hong Kong as separate countries; if this wasn’t done, Massachusetts would likely rank two places higher.) (Vanhoenacker).

No...I am not a Republican, and I voted for Obama last term, and I am not a Mormon,so don't even try it with me.

True G-9. Former Governor Romney's math does not add up. In this debate Mr. Romney said $2.8 billion dollars per year for oil company tax breaks when compared to a plan of $90 billion in clean energy tax breaks "Equals about 50 years". My calculator shows $90 billion divided by $2.8 billion = 32.14 years. Is 32 equal to "about 50"? Try going up to a 32 year old man or woman and saying "You are about 50 years old."

Which part of the math does not add up. The parts where Romney scolds Obama for saying he would cut the deficit in half but it grew? Or when he scolds Obama for saying he would cut spending but it grew?

Romney keeps showing Obama for what he is. You can see why Obama has been such a failure.

You've intentionally ignored the point. 32 years or 50 years, the point is that clean energy has been the recipient of far greater tax breaks than oil companies.

Richard Sayers....way to completely miss the point of the comment on focus on the simple! Does 50 years vs. 32 years really make that much of a difference when you blew $90 billion in less than 3 years on companies who aren't even in business anymore? A company not in business cannot employ anyone....see how that works.

And I'm sure you think Obama is telling nothing but the Truth, Right? Well, let me tell you straight up. The days after he signed his Health Care Reform Bill, my family lost our insurance. Why, you might ask, because you can now keep "ADULTS" who should be working and paying their own way insured till they are at least 26 but that number changes by state! In the State of OHIO, they can be on a parents policy until 28! My plan was cancelled and in order for me to keep my 3 children and my wife on our NEW CONFORMING plan, my premium, with a $10,000 deducible (Yes I agreed to pay the first $10,000 out of pocket) went from $285 per month to $795 per month and I still would have to pay the first $10,000! Plus my wife because we are on an individual policy, she does'nt have maternity coverage, I don't see a fix to this in the new OBAMACARE! But yet, single women tend to side with Obama, My wife and I don't get it! To many people are watching ZOMBI TV and not paying attention to detail!

You can vote any way you choose, but as an Independent my Vote is for someone who has more business experience and not some one who failed on everything including the ECONOMY, FOREIGN POLICY, NOT CUTTING OUR DEPT BUT will have successfully doubled it by 2018 unless serious changes are made but one campaign promise, he passed his OBAMACARE and it shows he and his cronies have not a clue when it comes to EFFECTIVE AFFORDABLE CARE! I could care less if we are going to be covering 30 Million more people, I just lost my health care when MY President Said, I could keep my plan, and my rates should come down. Like everything else he has said in 4 years. EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE HAS HAPPENED!

This debate made one thing perfectly clear, our Community Organizer President, is UNQUALIFIED and if you can't see that from this debate, nothing will change your mind.

Remember one thing, you make the bed you sleep in!

Hey; guess what...CNN just took a random poll of registered voters, Republican AND Democrats who watched the debate and guess what...67% said Romney won and only 25% said Obama did.

That obviously makes sense- let's just vote a straight Democratic ticket like you recommend without listening to what politicians have to say and considering their ideas. That will definitely promote a better world, listening to the party before the person. It's good to know that people are so engaged the in voting process and democracy.

I agree with edukated man. This debate did not change anyone's mind on who to vote for. The person they liked before the debate is the one they liked after the debate. Obama was right on one thing, but he did not state the numbers. Well here they are: medicare spends 2-3% of the money paid in on administrative costs. My Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota only has to refund money if they spend over 20% of premium money. Romney's ridiculous claim that private insurance companies are more cost efficient is simply, numerically wrong. The insurance companies own the Republican Party. Republicans can always be trusted to enact health care plans that channel money toward the insurance companies.

Obama was right to cut payments for health services. Charges for simple doctors' visits and many other services are a rip-off in this country compared with the rest of the industrialized world. I agree completely with using the large government buying power to deal effectively with ridiculous fees for simple services.

No, Snugglepuss is right. Its the insurance companies and their middleman paper pushing bs profits that Obama exposed when he fired back at Romney, Obama clearly won that one. Go back and watch! Romney was flip flopping and promising the stars in the sky on a performance of nothing. Obama was answering carefully based on being in office already for his first term and he has actually accomplished a lot of real things successfully. What would you rather have a well coached fast talker or a leader who actually thinks things out carefully and has a proven record of success? Achievements of Obama listed and explained below:

Edukated Man, I totally agree with you. Supporters of both sides are touting what they want to believe. I am almost at a point where if I hear the word "failed policies" again I may vomit because it means nothing. Add "can't run on his record" to that list. I am not supporting Obama here and I am certainly not trying to imply that the idiots writing "Romney is Obama's boy now" are not delusional...but seriously, there isn't one twit out there on this list willing to listen or learn anything that in ANY WAY might endanger what they WANT to believe is reality. Its the same tired lists of tortured facts and questionably assigned blame...yeah, Romney's adventures at Bain were bad but I don't know that I trust the propoganda against him...yeah, Obama has passed a healthcare plan but despite all the touting it still sounds like a handout to big pharm and the insurance companies...I am depressed because everyone here thinks they are right and not one of them is willing to consider how hideously complex this entire mess is and that blame lies in thousands of places and the solution is in no way easy or quick.

NO. Romney is not actually giving any real information or winning at all. He is acting like it, but it is not real. Much of what he says is not true. And just what does Romney have for back up? Where is his record of performance and success? Obama can show that as his first term is completing, America IS doing better, stocks ARE up, jobs ARE coming back, even the housing market IS beginning to improve slowly. Young folks and Americans with pre-existing conditions CAN be guaranteed insurance coverage, the troops ARE home from Iraq, bin Laden IS gone, no more loan sharks ARE allowed, vets do have better benefits, women and gays have rights and respect, so do young immigrants, 18 tax cuts for small businesses, growth of local oil and natural gas, clean renewable energy for energy independence, rescue and recovery of the American auto industry and attempted incentives for bringing back jobs from abroad. Many things have been obstructed in the Republican majority of the House of Representatives and yet it is clearly fact that Obama has achieved many good things in his first term and it can be backed up in many places quite easily.

Anonymous Insight your post is good and the links educational. What they do not do it make a case for or against either candidate. They illustrate exactly why the people writing pro-con for their candidate don't get it. There is nothing in the article about Solyndra that indicates that Obama did anything like what the mantra is. It is nothing more than standard Washington politics engaged in by both sides...money going to research/development, people lobbying for money to advance something. It was started before Obama came to office, there are no ties, it is basically a NON-ISSUE whether it is republican or democrat but both sides are reading what THEY WANT into the article to fire tortured reality at each other. Your post is excellent because it shows how reality gets sectioned off into right and left until no one, except a tiny fraction who is willing to read the actual casenotes, has any idea what the real story is. In most cases the real story is a nothing issue teased into propoganda by both sides. In fact the Solyndra issue, if you stop to read it, shows exactly how serious a trouble we are in on a host of levels (international competition, lobbyists, money in politics, etc) and is not pro or con for either party. It is a perfect example of a story from which one side takes ONLY what they want and blurts it as damning evidence against their opponent despite the fact that their own party has likely done exactly the same thing in some other case because Solyndra is clearly not a Dem or Repub specific issue. Thanks for the post...it was educational and I learned some things about the whole Solyndra thing that I had not idea about...its actually sort of a let-down. :-)

ConcernedAmerica you are a perfect example of the brain dead fools on this string. He hasn't done anything about the subsidies for the same reason no politicians are doing anything...he gets money from them too. The big corporations step in and dump money on which ever horse they are pretty sure is going to win the race. In the end, neither candidate/party will do anything about taking money away from any one. Our budget is not "out of control spending" it is a lack of revenue because the federal government has found a way to exempt just about anyone (corporations especially) from paying in and instead does nothing but grants out in loopholes and handouts. The poor 99% of people are getting a paultry percentage of the governments budget while most of the deficit is from no money coming in. The tax code is there...everyone claims to have to pay huge amounts but when the 15th of April comes and the breaks and loopholes and handouts are all fugured in, the % coming is really different.

How good is Mr. Romney's math? EXAMPLE from this debate: Mr. Romney said $2.8 billion dollars per year for oil company tax breaks when compared to a plan of $90 billion in clean energy tax breaks "Equals about 50 years". My calculator shows 2.8 x 50 = 140. There is a BIG DIFFERENCE between $90 billion and $140 billion. Looking at it another way: $90 billion divided by $2.8 billion = 32.14 years. Is 32 equal to "about 50"? Try going up to a 32 year old man or woman and saying "You are about 50 years old."

If that's all you could get out of his comment, I understand why you support Obama. Try to look past a slight error in math and look at his point. The amount that oil companies receive is much smaller than what alternative energy received. Don't even get me started on the money that was lost by them.

Srich: I think you're being too kind. Speaking only for myself here, in my book, it doesn't just imply it, it pretty much just lays it flat out. But hey, maybe that's just me.

I've had plenty of liberals tell me I'm a racist. But, I since I don't easily suffer the lies and hypocrisy of liberalism, their rants mean nothing to me. But, I have to admit, I sometimes enjoy tweaking their noses when I tell them my first choice out of the Republican field was Herman Cain, and that I'm not a Romney supporter, but will be doing a write in for Allen West. Both statements of which are totally and absolutely 100% true. Man, you can just see the steam pouring out of their ears.

It seems the new definition of racism in liberal la la land also extends to now requiring, and must include having the proper politically correct ideology, as well as skin color.

I could have sworn he said 2 "Million" not billion... In that case it would equal a 45K salary a year. Where I live, the average K-12 teacher earns 36k-45k, depending on thier specialty or course they teach. I believe coaches may earn a little extra as a kicker or incentive.

Again, your comments are so biased, bigoted and absurd. Women (or "you girls" should vote for Obama because they like a man who knows how to communicate, and the African-Americans who don't support Obama should ask themselves why Africa is so messed up. What does referring to Africa have to do with being a citizen of the US?. Then you say it is because of diamond traders...I suppose you were trying to imply it was because of white businessmen like Romney. The you most laughable statement when you were trying to say it was not because of education because "Africa has good schools"...The continent of Africa has the lowest literacy race in the world.

And who gives a crap who you are related to? And if you are related to the two you mentioned, the gene pool was sadly watered down when it got to you because your IQ seems to be half of what theirs likely were.

If you can't keep up with the adults, you will have to go sit at the kiddy table".

How many times will Richard Sayers post the same thing?

Richard Sayer has NO SUBSTANCE, consequently, he has nothing intelligent to say.
