Candidates square off in first presidential debate

With polls showing President Obama leading in crucial swing states, Wednesday's debate has become even more important for Mitt Romney. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

DENVER – Most of the American political universe descended Wednesday on the University of Denver’s campus for the highly-anticipated opening debate between President Barack Obama and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Both candidates will meet onstage shortly after 9 p.m. ET. for a culminating moment in the 2012 presidential election. Tonight’s debate, the first of three between Obama and Romney, offer both men an opportunity to shake up the campaign in the winnowing days before Election Day.

Romney spent much of the day holed up in his hotel resting and preparing for the debate. Both he and Obama toured the debate site this afternoon; the president traveled to Denver this afternoon from Henderson, Nev., where he spent the earlier part of this week practicing.

Obama enters the debate with a slight advantage over Romney, both nationwide and in key swing states, according to the latest NBC News-Wall Street Journal polls. That raises the pressure for Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, to make up ground versus Obama tonight.

The debate, which is moderated by Jim Lehrer of PBS, features an open-ended format set to maximize the direct sparring between Obama and Romney. The focus of Wednesday’s debate is domestic policy, though the recent outbreak of violence – particularly in Libya – could mean that foreign policy is also featured in tonight’s showdown.

NBC's Chuck Todd examines strategies to be employed by the Obama and Romney campaigns in the first of three debates that will help determine the presidential election.

Only one way to find out, and even then, when we look at ourselves in the mirror we all know that conservatives will say Mitt did great! regardless, and democrats will say Obama was so cool! regardless. So really, WHO KNOWS???

Here's the ironic thing: Generally speaking, democrats will always vote democrat, nothing will change that. Conversely, conservatives will always vote conservative. So in the end, the independents get to decide who gets in. Yay for independents :|

I'm a conservative, but that doesn't mean I hate you liberal peeps, these comments would be empty without both parties here, wouldn't you agree?

    It's Amazing!

President Obama is kicking the wannabe "Outsourcer and Chief" Mitt Romney's butt, behind, and arse.

President Obama is hitting the ball out of the park on every question,

and Mitt Romney is "sweating like a pig", on every question.

Thank-God Obama will be our President for the next Four (yes 4!) very long years.

But we have to do our part.

We have to make sure to Vote a straight Democratic ticket come this November 2012, and send Mitt romney and his Republican Masters

"BACK to the DUNG HEAP of POLITICAL HISTORY",

where the Republican Party really belongs.

Voting dem or repub will get you the same result the middle class enslaved in either big gov't or big business what's the difference, both kill off the life blood of this country.

Mitt did very well against Obama. Not sure why anyone would want four more years with Obama. Last election he promised a rose garden and only made things worst. However, it was his plan to take us down and if he gets in office this time we can kiss our Country goodbye. Obama can say anything he wants about what he plans for our Country but the real truth is he hates America and he will prove it if he gets back in office. Any one for Obama has been pre-warned. You need to go back to US Constitution class. Congress writes all budgets and spending bills. The President submits to congress what he would like to do. Congress then passes what they are willing to let him do.

When you analyse the deficits vs who held the House, the Senate, and the President, you will get an entirely different picture.

Worst spending, Dem House, Dem Senate with a Dem President.

Second worst spending and deficits. Dem House, Dem Senate, Republican President.

Third Worst spending and deficits. Dem House, Rep Senate, Republican President.

Best fiscal restraint Rep House, Rep Senate, Rep President with one glaring exceptions Jan 2003 - Jan 2005. In the history books, 2005 - 2007 spending increased little and the whopping revenue increases was wiping out the deficits.

Second Best Fiscal restraint. Republican house, democrats Senate Rep President.

You must mean the media does love Obama because he is intelligent and can formulate his thoughts well. Equally, you could mean because he is married to a woman who is intelligent and can formulate her thoughts intelligently. Romney is not intelligent, is not married to an intelligent woman, has a problem thinking independently and certainly does think well without being coached. His best plan for tonight is to stay on script. Mitt, do not veer from the plan...stay on course. If you fall off track you are toast!

Nope, the media loves Obama because, for the most part, the media is composed of liberals. Not hard to figure out, been going on for awhile now.

The Government flub it and he had a right to call them out on it. Can't do one thing for some and not the others. I can see you voting for a man like Akin too...is that your hate beliefs?

I think mitt really stepped on his pecker with the 47% comment he got busted on, and the mid center folks who were unsure which way to lean before are going to vote for barry. its going to be a close race no doubt though. i have no preference for either candidate but i think mitt blew it.his base will still vote for him , but he's lost a lot of the "i don't know who i'm voting for crowd" i say ...stick a fork in him he's done.

It was hubris for Mitt to speak about such a large group of people and "write them off". Such an idiot. In this day and age, did he honestly think no one had a phone and was taping his conversation? Such a douchebag! Then, just to clarify, he says again, that he's writing them off because they/we (I qualify in this group because I work and feed my children AND pay taxes but am not a millionnaire) "would never vote for him"....certainly not now buddy.

He was a douche before and is a douche now. Tell me Mitt, just how many lies have you told today? How many people have you "written off" today Mitt? Just how come you are so hubris?

NO, Mitt did not: and obviously you are one of the 47%

and I work: I know what it is to get myself up each day after having planned the day or week before to be prepared and be responsible

now expect someone else to take care of me or mine.

47% obviously are fat, lazy, and indifferent or they would have a JOB...illegals have no problems finding work...

So if that is all you can come up with...you are not worth your flush!

Sorry USA, but if you have EVER had a tax refund you are in the 47%. I have federal taxes taken out of my check EVERY payday, as does every working American not at the poverty level. The government does not put it in to some bank account and save it for me if I get a refund. It goes to the Fed, which then spends it on whatever program they need to spend it on that week. If I receive a refund at the end of the year I guess that makes me a moocher, a fat, lazy, and indifferent American. You need an education, or to maybe just be flushed...

Some of the 47% are people that get tax breaks working low paying jobs, it was part of the Welfare Reform Act. So Stop USA you should know the facts before showing your lack of intelligence.

It is not like it is going to matter what they promise or what they say. Four years ago in the debates Obama made lots of promises and up to now has not delivered on any of them. He has proven, on his own record, that he can't be trusted. Look at his record and what he has done over the past four years and you will see that he has done nothing to fix any problems or deliver on any promises....all he has done is kick the can down the road and spend tax payer money on everything. To date, he is the most traveled president and has spend historical amounts of money. Under him the US has lost it's AAA credit rating and gone in debt so far that our grandchildren's children will still be paying for his lies and his spending spree. It should no longer be about political parties but about saving our great nation. Anyone would do better than Obama and he has shown that. Ask yourselves this...where is he getting all that money to spend on campaigning...from his 1%er friends that he has been spending money to save for the past four years while the rest of us fight to keep a roof over our head and food on the table.

Deficit by President....inane, and obviously dishonest leftwing ploy to claim that all deficits run up by Republican presidents 1933-1994, when the Democrats ran Congress, are those presidents' fault alone, and not the Democrats who controlled the House.

In a real comparison, the Dems come out looking much more rotten. They get all the blame for all debts under FDR, Truman, JFK, LBJ and Carter and first 2 years of Clinton because they ran everything, all houses and presidency, except for a couple years in there when Repubs had one or the other branch, very few.

The Dems get half the blame for all debts under Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Bush 1. They get half the blame for all debt last 2 years of Bush.

Look, if that was your thing fine, but to be know as someone who was for the war yet fail to participate....WTF? You think now that because he know draws retirement, he is a moocher?! Romney feels he is above the the middle class. He was born on 3rd base and thinks he hit a triple! He is a liar and a cheat. Oh sure he takes the exemptions because they are legal. Whatever...YOUR MATH DOESN'T ADD UP! You cannot cut 20% of taxes and balance the budget. The standards for all politicians during a debate are:

                                          1) more or less ignore the questions -- just pull out one of your talking points that's kind of on the same subject. STAY ON MESSAGE. Hammer home the same points over and over again even if they aren't strictly speaking relevant or factual.

                                          2) Produce sound bites that make you look good. Most people are only going to see a couple 20 second clips of the debate, so make all your 20 seconds look good. Doesn't matter if you are on a bizarre tangent, make it sound good as a clip.

                                          3) Have good hair. People vote for the guy with the best hair.

                                          Follow up:

Romney was best at sticking to his talking points, regardless of the actual subject at hand.

Romney had the best sound bites.

And Romney had the best hair.

The best thing Obama can say about the debate is that he didn't make any major, embarrassing flubs. But he didn't shine either.

I'm sitting in front of the TV tonight in just a pair of white long underwear to show my support of Mitt.

And yes, Democrats, there's millions of people just like me wearing only long johns tonight too. That's how much we're upset about your failed big government recovery.

The entire government run by Dems and Reps is a failure.

I have been around since Nixon, yet to see President who does good job.

Ray-gun. Too bad he didn't have a Newt Gingrich congress or we would have gone thru the Welfare State with a buzz-saw. As is, we ran deficits...Demoncats blocked all cuts in handouts.

You should wear long mitts instead of johns.

                                            That kind of smartest guy.

He has always looked like a creepy old rat to me. And the sideburns that are grey on the end....something is totally off about him. He is creepy on so many levels. I would never allow my children near him, afraid for their security.

MArgo--you are exactly whats wrong--to vote for someone to run the most powerful COMPANY on the earth because he's cool--what a fool.

Well, it is the fools who vote for the celebrity. If it weren't for those celebrity worshippers, weaned on tv and vacuous in the extreme, we wouldn't be in the current sorry state of affairs we presently suffer under. Thats right, little sheep, pay attention to the hair, far more important that the real issues confronting our nation.

bmw, that's an odd statement considering Mitt has been dodging 'specifics' on his answers for months. Being stuck in a forum where you're expected to actually answer a question probably won't go so well for him. If he starts parroting basic stump speeches, it's going to fail. People need to know what they are getting. Vague answers just won't cut it here.

It will be interesting to see if he actually provides any specifics. He's been denying those same answers to the press for months.

Thank you Mr. President, believe me, we know where all the DEBT came from. Why in the world would we hand the economy back to the wolf after he just killed grandma. NOT going to happen. Funny how RoMONEY has all these details, last minute, mind you, and he's deluded enough to think his numbers won't be gone over with a fine tooth comb. He's been mute on all of it...he can forget about being elected. We've got YOUR number and your party's. Elect any of them and they will think saying NO is a PLAN.

So tell me Mitt, I'll betcha want to cut Obama's hair now too. Your plan makes no sense! Like President Clinton said: IT'S ARITHMETIC.
