Updated 6:16 p.m. - Just about 22 miles along I-75 separated President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s events Wednesday in northwest Ohio, the corner of a well-worn swing state that could foretell the outcome of November’s election.
Obama spoke this afternoon at Bowling Green State University, a college just a short drive south from nearby Toledo, where Romney held a rally early Wednesday evening. The candidates’ dueling rallies signify the importance of a specific and shrinking slice of undecided voters in battleground states like Ohio, where state-level polling mirrors what is happening nationally, with Romney falling behind and needing to quickly make up ground.

In the final push in the 2012 presidential election, candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama make their last appeals to voters.
Putting his mission bluntly, the GOP nominee told the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Wednesday: "Ohio voted for Barack Obama the last time, so to win I've got to get people who voted for him the last time to vote for me this time."
"I'm going to win Ohio," Romney predicted to NBC News in an interview before his rally in Toledo.
For Obama, today’s trip to the area was just his latest since stopping in Toledo on Labor Day; he and Vice President Joe Biden are frequent visitors to the state. Romney, meanwhile, spent the day capping a bus tour that had taken him and vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan throughout the Buckeye State over the past few days.
The recent swing through Ohio couldn’t be of more importance to the Republican ticket. A Quinnipiac University/CBS News/New York Times poll released Wednesday found Obama handily leading Romney among the state’s likely voters, 53 to 43 percent.

That’s a wider margin compared to two weeks ago, when Obama led Romney by seven points -- 50 to 43 percent -- in the NBC News/Marist/Wall Street Journal poll of Ohio’s likely voters.
The Romney campaign insisted Tuesday it has “confidence in our data and our metrics” showing a more competitive race, but public polling suggests Romney and Ryan have to make up ground if they hope to win this crucial battleground state in just less than six weeks.
Speaking in Bedford Heights Wednesday afternoon, Romney launched into a stock attack on the president, and a lionization of business.
“A lot of people can talk. Talk is cheap. You can be extraordinarily eloquent and describe all the wonderful things you can do, but when you cut through the words you can look at the record, and when you can see policies that have not created the jobs America needs, then you know it’s time to choose a new leader, get a new coach, get America growing again,” Romney said before departing for his later event in downtown Toledo.

At the same time, Obama was speaking in the Toledo area, where he looked to exploit his apparent advantage over Romney (for now) by exhorting attendees of his rally to take advantage of early voting when it begins Oct. 2.
"I need you to register to vote. I need you to start voting,” Obama concluded at his rally on the college campus.
The president told the crowd at Bowling Green that if the student who introduced him – who, according to Obama, put off treatment for a broken wrist earlier in the day to fulfill his obligations at the rally – could grit his teeth through an injury, they had no excuse not to register to vote.
The dueling rallies in Northwest Ohio, separated by just a few hours and just a few miles, are just one high-profile example of the bombardment voters there have endured during the past few presidential election cycles. It’s well-documented that no Republican in recent political history has won the presidency without winning Ohio and for Romney, his narrow Electoral College map would become even more challenging were he to lose the state.

It’s no surprise, then, that Obama and Romney overlapped there Wednesday, especially given the local population, which represents somewhat of a microcosm of the voters for which the two candidates will tussle this fall.
The region is a hub for the auto industry and component businesses, and the president is quick to boast of his decision to bail out the auto industry (a decision which Romney opposed) when campaigning in the area. Toledo, nicknamed the “Glass City” for its tradition in producing that product, has sought to refashion itself as a manufacturer of solar panels, an industry which has benefited from Obama’s renewable-energy initiatives.
“When my opponent just said we should ‘Let Detroit go Bankrupt,’” Obama told the crowd in Bowling Green, referencing Romney’s infamous 2008 op-ed for the New York Times, “that would've meant walking away from an industry that supports one in eight Ohio jobs.”
Ahead of early voting in Ohio, President Obama is reminding voters in the Buckeye State that he pushed for an auto industry bailout early in his first term. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.
But while Obama has been the beneficiary of growing economic optimism throughout Ohio, where the unemployment rate sunk to 7.2 percent in August, the jobless rate in the Toledo area is higher – 8.1 percent – through the end of July, the most recent month for which local statistics are available.
“When manufacturing leaves it’s very hard to bring it back. And we’ve lost manufacturing again and again and again. And some people say oh, that’s fine, ‘We'll just do the engineering and the high-end things,’” Romney said at his Cleveland-area event. “But let me tell you: Ultimately the engineering and the high-end things go where the manufacturing is, because ideas and engineering and innovation are associated with manufacturing. We have to have manufacturing here and my policy will be to bring it back."
According to the latest Census, the median household income of about $42,000 for Lucas County, which includes much of the Toledo metro area, is less than the statewide average of $47,300. Eighteen percent of people in the county live below the poverty level, and just 23 percent of the area’s residents over the age of 25 have achieved a bachelor’s degree or higher. In addition, the area has long been a stronghold for white Catholics, a prized voting bloc for both campaigns this cycle.

In short, the area is a cross-section of the swing voters both Romney and Obama have assiduously courted in various battleground states this year.
Underscoring that fact, Toledo is the eighth-hottest media market for campaign ad spending in the general election, according to NBC News ad-tracking sources. And it is the 10th-hottest media market just this week. The Romney campaign and its supporters have spent about $1 million on Toledo’s airwaves this month, while Obama’s campaign and its supporters have spent more than $760,000.
It’s also one of the areas where the Obama campaign and supportive super PACs blanketed the airwaves early this summer criticizing Romney as a pioneer of outsourcing and for allegedly dodging tax laws.
Today’s poll from Ohio suggests those attacks have paid long-term dividends for Obama. Fifty-seven percent of likely voters said they didn’t think that Romney cared about the needs and problems of people like them; 51 percent said they thought Obama would do a better job handling the economy, versus 45 percent of Ohio voters who said that of Romney.
Almost five months ago, in late March, Romney led Obama, 49 to 40 percent, among Ohioans on the question of who would better handle the economy.

I think Mitt Romney and the GOP always thought they were going to be some sort of knights in shining armor coming to the rescue of the American people. But that's not quite how we saw it. That's not quite what happened.
Our recovery in large part had always depended on we the people and we delivered. And we know that the only one who had our back was our president and the Democratic Party.
Mitt never lifted a finger to help out. No one in the Republican Party lifted a finger to help out.
We did it ourselves, with the help of President Obama and VP Biden.
A huge huge shout out to the auto industry for turning it all around in such a short time.
We should all be proud of what we were able to do together, with a president who stayed the course.
We're not stupid. We know who was there for us and who wasn't. We know who wanted health care. We know who wanted children of immigrants to have a chance at a better future. We know who wanted regulations so we wouldn't get screwed again. We know who wants to support teachers and not ridicule them. We know who wanted equal pay. We know who wanted DADT over-turned. We know who wanted civil unions. We know who supported veterans as they came home broken.
And on and on and on.
And that's why President Obama will win.
And you know what? He was right. Change isn't about him.
It's about us.

Repubs took the Norquist pledge to not raise taxes to make the GREEDY rich richer and to keep America from recovery from their economy crash.
Repubs block taking away tax breaks from companies that offshore American jobs.
Repubs block giving tax breaks to companies that would bring back jobs to America.
Repubs block taking away oil subsidies from big oil when Oil execs testify before congress that they don't need them.
Repubs voted against giving health care to 9111 responders until exposed on national tv, even then a large number of repubs voted against 911 responders after taking years of photo ops with firemen and policemen etc.
Repubs voted against a jobs bill for vets while a record number of Vets are retuning to America and committing suicide.

It's getting to the point I almost feel sorry for Mitt Romney. He makes more of a fool out of himself every day. Did anyone see him in Ohio yesterday --- it was simply sad to watch. This election is over. Mitt Romney is one of the very worst candidates of all times. But the problem goes deeper than that for the Republican Party. Republicans have managed to chase just about every demographic out of their party except old white men and old white women. They haven't had a new economic idea in over 30 years. If Republicans don’t come up with some new ideas and find an entirely new group of leaders, we just may have another President Clinton in 2017.
I have to tell you, the right wing is confusing. I guess it must depend on the day. Today, madmax posits that his President is a Muslim. Now, I have to ask exactly what stops a Muslim from running for President, I do hope that this particular poster will come back and point to exactly where that is in the Constitution.
And on other days, these same posters will claim that their President is a radical Christian, you know Rev. Wright and all that nonsense.
He also says that all Muslims hate Americans and our way of life, which includes equal rights for women. But, there are certain Republicans, Cantor, Bachmann, West and the other nutcases who manage to hate the same things.
So, which is it?

There is nothing nice about Obama ignoring his job when so many Americans are suffering .... when he demonstrates such depraved indifference to the millions suffering with the worst long term unemployment since the Great Depression.
There is nothing nice about an energy policy that wantonly doubles the price of gas when so many Americans are having a difficult time ... when record numbers are on food stamps ...are now in the ranks of the poor.
There is nothing nice about saddling our kid's futures with needless, asinine debt.
There is nothing nice about Obama's having only 26 intelligence briefings while having 96 campaign events, a debauchery that resulted in the deaths of 4 Americans in Libya.There is nothing nice about the Fast and Furious debacle that knowing gave murdering Mexican drug cartels 2,500 assault rifles that led to the deaths of 2 American agents in addition to hundreds of innocent Mexican civilians.

I find it sad and regrettable that what will be viewed two decades from now is that both of them were wrong for the country. Talking non-issues and playing politics. They are playing with 300 million Americans lives. And while most won't believe nor accept real issues and more than real consequences, we are headed down a path of self-annihilation. A few things. We are so far in debt(as Clinton stated{democrat}) that we will not be able to pay the interest on our debt, let alone the principle. The right believe that they should not have to pay more when they see how the government uses the money. The left believe that no social programs should ever be cut to balance the budget and begin to reduce our debt. Well, they are both right and they are both wrong. When we can no longer borrow to spend on social programs, they will be no more. How will that go over. You think Greece is lovely this time of year? And when the economy tanks because of this debt, the government will do what it did during the great depression, take everything from those that have and level the playing field, leaving everyone broke including the rich, trying to survive.
This two party system is tearing this country apart when nobody stands back and realizes we are all being played.

Well, I've read through all these comments (appropriate adjectives as to the quality of the comments left out on purpose). I was born and raised in Ohio, but left there over 30 years ago to get away from the ridiculous leftist thinking. What I have learned (that most people it seems haven't) is how ridiculous it is to follow a strict party line. Nothiing could be worse for our country than a population who can't think about what is right and best for the country (or the city, county, state, etc), and then vote a strict party line, even if it is not what is best for the country.
The situation we have now is a choice between the lesser of two evils. Neither party has given us a good choice of candidate. But they have given us a clear choice of who is by far the worst of the two. You all know the facts. You're just too thick headed to address them. So besides the fact that Obama cannot, in any way shape or form, run on his record, lets just look at what he has done (more appropriately said....not done) in the past month. HE HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING PRESIDENTIAL, being so overly concerned wilth his entertainment schedule, fundraising, and campaigning and purposely keeping the "empty chair" in the White House.
So, Mr. POTUS, where was the beefed up security for the US Embassies during the anniversary of 9/11? Oh, I see. You didn't think that there could be a threat and that that could be important? Well, now that we've had some terroristic murders of US personnel, and lots of US flag burnings and riots at our embassies, how about meeting with the leaders of the World at the UN Council? OH, I see. You'll have to telephone them later .....Why?..... because you have an important prescheduled appearance on THE VIEW............ whoooppiiee. I am so glad you're my president. NOT! NOT! What I truly can't understand is that after these past four embarrassingly miserable years under obamanation, and then after the rercent incidents in the Middle East and at the United Nations in NYC, followed by acts of ignorance, lies and avoidance, how anybody could vote to keep this fraud in office. That might be fine for a year or two, but eventually the creditors you borrowed from will demand their money back. Three questions. What will be your standard of living when you can't borrow more? We still own 31% of GM and the company still owes YOU $25 Billion and Ohioans are just simply overjoyed with this scenario.
Now in my view, Out Sourcing is a reality for Global companies an avenue they must take to be competitive, but Obama made a big deal of it with Bain Capital insinuating that Romney was a traitor to America, yet he is doing the same thing with taxpayer funds and Democrats are okay with this hypocrisy.
The Union people of Ohio are not going to bite the hand that feeds them and based on this charitable bailout, which by the way did not save the Auto Industry as if it was really going to disappear, they could possibly determine the fate of this election which just doesn't seem fair.
For the rest of America, whatever happened to basing one's decision on the merit of the situation as opposed to party affiliation. How many small businesses and individuals are left twisting in the wind while these expensive ineffective policies stagnate our economy. I agree with your premise, but it does not remedy a problem that any politician can fix. The problem is technology. We, in the US have been very good at coming up with ways to replace the human worker in equations. Why are you so surprised when we succeed. Manufacturing in the US is not the main problem. The problem is that technology has replaced 100 men with one machine. We would have full employment if this wasn't the case, and it will only get worse. This is not something that can be legislated, it has to do with the value of a man. And currently, there is none. Destroy technology, and the next time you want something made, you will have to hire a man.
You write of Chinese factories, and the reason they do well is because of technology, not because of manpower. We are not outsourcing jobs to China, we are outsourcing jobs to machines.

I am in construction, and I drive by construction sites every day around MPLS. Well, I watched three machines and three men pour and finish 4000 yards of concrete on the freeway using machinery. This used to take a hundred men a month and it was done in a day. You may say progress, but I thought the whole idea of the stimulus bill was to get unemployment down? This can't happen when you hire machines.The problem is that the job was given to a company, and not men. Poke fun all you want, and I will have fun when you are replaced.

of course, the dueling rallies tell an interesting contrast--Obama was at The Bowling Green State University, where candidates for President who speak there always win--which happens to sit in the middle of one of the most GOP heavy counties in Ohio, and one of the most GOP safe Congressional districts as well. Romney was in Toledo, which is not a "swing" county--it is a predominantly Democratic County as a whole. And in a congressional district where Joe the Fake Plumber is going to get taken to the woodshed and made to squeal like a pig.
Romney will lose this state. It will be the second beat down for the GOP in 2 years at the hands of hard working honest Ohioans who don't don't take to dilettantes like Romney and Kasich very well.

You make a valid point that machinery temporarily displaces human workers. Powered ships at sea put many oarsmen out of work. It gave way to much more lucrative jobs as engineers, manufacturers, maintenance workers and mechanics. Cross-country railroads put many trail bosses and stage coaches out of work, but exploded in far more lucrative jobs to railway hands and builders, rail car and locomotive manufacturers as well as a transportation explosion that created hundreds of thousands of new jobs.
Our economic disaster today has nothing to do with technology that eliminates some jobs (but reliably opens the door to multiples of new and better jobs for an improved standard of living). It has everything to do with an ever shrinking world with an ever growing global and competitive economy that entices the wealthiest and most powerful to abandon all loyalties in the name of almighty greed.
This very same greed has destroyed every great civilization in world history. Will we allow it to destroy ours? Beware of the rich man that demands your loyalty or last remaining pittance with promises that his overflowing bounty will "trickle-down" to you. He is a liar that plays you for a fool in hopes that your further impoverishment will allow him to finally enslave you and yours. That is the source of our misery today, not modern technology.

The basic fact of the matter is that it will not be a short-term deficit. They will never live within their means, unless forced. And, If no foreign powers will buy our debt, then we will be forced to never again raise the debt ceiling. We may not be Greece, but a small chain of events would send us down that path. Imagine the riots in the streets of the US if we were forced to not just stop, but eliminate social programs alone.
I understand that you may be a glass half full type of person, and believe that it could never happen to US, but I think that is a blind way to look at potential hazards.

Poor Romney is throwing good money after bad. The people who voted for the president four years ago are going to vote for him again. When you give a person no reason to vote for you, this is what happens. Romney has the NRA vote and the DOMA vote, and the pro-life vote, and nothing else he does will matter.

I think Americans gave Romney a chance to state his case, but when they learned his VP wants to change Medicare into a voucher system, where seniors would have to go out and buy health insurance on the open market, it raised questions about the Republicans' intentions.

If Romney had been elected president in 2009 he'd have accused the 5 million plus who were dumped on unemployment roles the last 6 months of Bush's presidency of being leeches unworthy of his concern. Romney's contempt for anyone who doesn't pay any federal income taxes will grow if he's elected due to his 20% across the board tax cut. He'll thrust several million who pay a small amount of taxes into those paying none. Does that mean he'd create 52% of the population who'd never vote for him?
Cantakenomore: How will Romney's plans be better for the middle class? I can never get any republican to explain what his policies are much less how they'd be better. Romney claims he'll repeal Obamacare but submit his own plan which will keep many of it's features and cost savings. He claims he'll implement a medicare plan that doesn't take 716 billion from medicare as Obama's does, (even though Obama's plan doesn't take anything it merely negotiates lower rates) but his plan includes those same negotiated savings.
How will Romney's plan to cut funding for teachers and provide vouchers that will only benefit the affluent not hurt the middle class? How will Romney's plan to import 1,250,000 foreign high tech workers create jobs because he claims a shortage of high tech workers even though unemployment in those sectors unemployment is double what it was prior to the Bush meltdown. Or removing the cap on H1B visa's so unlimited foreign workers can be hired. Romney plans to cut education and simply import foreign workers from countries willing to educate their people. Doesn't sound like sound policy to me.
Romney claims his 5 trillion mostly for the rich tax cut will be revenue neutral yet won't eliminate deductions for the middle class though most economists say that isn't possible. So how will he pay for it? Tell us what Romney proposes will be better.

Columbus -- A liberal advocacy group has filed a complaint against GOP Presidential challenger Mitt Romney's campaign over a rally at a coal mine in southeast Ohio.
Progress Ohio Executive Director Brian Rothenberg alleges in a letter sent Sept. 24 to the Federal Election Commission that Romney for President and Murray Energy Corp. violated campaign finance law by forcing miners to attend a rally near Beallsville and then using footage of dust-covered workers in campaign ads.
Murray Energy owns the mine where the rally took place and, according to subsequent news reports, shut down operations the on the morning of Romney's mid-August visit. Miners were not paid for their time, though attendance at the rally was mandatory.
In his FEC complaint, Rothenberg alleges miners were "coerced" into attending, "essentially forcing these employees to make a contribution to a candidate ..."
Rothenberg said Murray Energy should have to disclose the value of the miners' time, and he wants the Romney campaign to pull the ads featuring the miners.
"It is clear from what happened here that the required attendance of the miners was something of value given by Murray Energy to the Romney campaign, and that is a prohibited corporate contribution," Rothenberg said, adding, "By coercing the employees to attend the Romney rally, they have forced these employees to make a contribution to a candidate in violation of federal code ..."

In public, Romney declined over and over to say which deductions he would eliminate from the tax code in order to make his plan to cut taxes across the board revenue-neutral.
Tax Policy Center analyzed Romney's tax plan and concluded that if he wanted it to be revenue-neutral, he would have no choice than to limit the more popular and expensive deductions, therefore raising taxes on middle-class earners.

The idea is that if you implement what he proposes in his plan he will achieve the goal of generating more revenue while reducing spending. THIS CANNOT BE ACCOMPLISHED IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME BECAUSE THE DEFICiT IS SO GREAT, Even if Obama is re-elected he will have the same problem.
The specific deductions you're referring to deal with the Rich as to which loopholes will be eliminated. He claims he needs to propose them before Congress so they can hash out what they will be, not a good selling appoint I agree, but if I'm not mistaken, the idea is to generate more taxes from the rich and give the middle class a 20% cut all the while keeping revenues at the same level.
By shifting some of the burden he feels this will help stimulate the circulation of the dollar.
Remember it's a plan, a course he wants to take that he believes will work; problem is we won't know if it will until it's put into play, no different than Obama's plan of "Hope and Change" when he ran and we have "experienced" how that has fallen short of it's goal, remember we're talking politics here.
This election should be a referendum on Obama and his record, the fact that Romney is getting hammered like he is shows you how effective the Chicago style politician is but in reality it still won't change anything if you leave these ineffective policies in place. You can hope all you want and I suggest that the more you hope, the more things will remain the same.
Obama is a REAL politician, Romney is not. That is apparent in his performance in public. But instead of it working for him, the people seem to prefer the slick con style of the stereo type politician, I guess that's what they're use to and comfortable with, it's a shame.

If that would be true, either the moderates/rational people would win and take control back or the Tea Party folks would win and the moderates would leave. Ohio is everything. Not only is it a critical battleground state, but it's a bell weather state and it is demoralizing to be behind in for Romney. If he concedes Ohio, he concedes the election as far as the party and pundits are concerned. However, if he spends all his resources just to win Ohio, that could cost him the other critical states he needs to win.
It's pretty obvious by now that the Romney strategy is a blitz of non-stop ads and media push outs, but that may not make a difference. I believe people are already at the saturation point and that more ads won't change the minds of people who have already made their choice and will only confuse the undecideds even more to where they may not vote at all or split to third party candidates.
Early voting has already started in some states and absentee ballots are going out soon. I think if the Romney team can't move those numbers in the next couple weeks, then his funding is going to start drying up. Business bets on winners regardless of party, so if it looks like Obama is the winning bet, business will change sides and figure out how to best work with the Democrats and stop throwing good money after bad on a losing campaign.
And it's not just the Romney/Ryan ticket. They've hurt the GOP brand enough to possibly affect many of the other races at stake for the GOP. If those seats can't win, then any additional support for them from the party and backers will also dry up.
It almost seems that the GOP never wanted to win this or didn't think they could, so all of their best shots at winning are waiting until 2016 to run. Maybe they figure by then the Tea Party will have run its course and won't be playing the spoiler then like it has in this cycle.

Romney bragged he actually ordered his accountants to over pay his taxes to get his 14% rate this year other wise it would have been 10.3%. Isn't that a little hypocritical when he stated he took all the deductions in the past that he had a right to and didn't have to defend it? He had a household staff of 4 in 2010 that he paid a total of $20,000 or $5,000 a piece. At least if elected and he passes his 10% tax cut and eliminates capital gains which is most of his income he'll pay no more than his housekeepers.
