The tax deduction eliminations and spending cuts that would be required in order to meet his stated goals of revenue neutrality and deficit reduction would be monumental.

The "details" of these cuts and reforms are either too horrific to disclose or don't exist at all except in the Romney/Ryan fantasyland where the rules of basic math do not apply.

Even with Softball Gregory asking the questions, Romney really screwed the pooch with his uninformative answers. The most telling were when he said that he would pay for the tax cuts for the wealthy by eliminating an equal amount of deductions and loopholes for the wealthy. Gregory asked why he would do that since it would not benefit anyone, let alone the wealthy. Then Gregory tried to follow up by asking Romney to name one deduction or loophole that he would eliminate. Romney was unable (or unwilling) to answer the question.

That's why the odds of Obama winning on Nov 6th are 3-to-1. Romney is toast. And the Republican "brand" is tarnished beyond recovery. The GOP is headed toward three competing parties for 2016 --- a radical Tea Party, a neocon Republican Party, and a separate republican party for "Moderate" and "Liberal" Republicans. A fragmented GOP cannot win national elections and cannot win most state elections.

With seven weeks to go before the election the Romney campaign has finally realized they have made a number of critical miscalculations. Including (but certainly not limited to): reinventing former Governor Romney as a conservative (when he's historically been a left-leaning moderate), underestimating the negative impact of his tenure at Bain, his obsession with secrecy regarding his taxes and wealth and, of course, how he intends to deliver on his campaign promises.

The Romney campaign can read the polls. Today, internally they must be very nervous. According to Nate Silver -- who has an almost perfect record of predicting election results -- President Obama has to just capture two toss up states (Florida and any other, for example) to be reelected. For former Governor Romney to win he has to nearly run the table.

In a freaking fundraiser video, he is talking to WEALTHY donors about how 47% of Americans are "dependent on government," even though those 47% (who don't pay income taxes) pay social insurance taxes, which constitute around 40% of all federal revenues (compared to around 43% for income taxes). This makes him out to be another corporate shill who is only out for the 1%. You cannot run for president and immediately say to about 150 million Americans that you don't give a damn about what happens to them; you'll be as disgraced as Herbert Hoover was after 1932.

Ladies and gentlemen, ALL of America should be worried about what will happen to America under a President Romney. For the young Americans, waiting to get a job or to get to college, Romney will definitely not help you. Instead of helping you pay for college, Romney will return loans to the treacherous financial industry (which is federally insured and thus a moral hazard). In addition, Romney promises you that he will create 12 million jobs over the next 4 years, yet he fails to explain to you that most of those jobs will not happen until perhaps 2015 or later, and that the number of jobs created will be far lower (because we all know the fallacy of tax cuts for the job creators).

For seniors, those already in Medicare or approaching the age of 55 AND 65, you should be very afraid of a Romney presidency. Romney's Medicare plan is pretty similar to Ryan's voucher plan, which offers a choice of either traditional Medicare or a voucher option. Now, Republicans will tell you that you can easily choose traditional Medicare, but what they won't tell you is that if most people choose that (which they will, compared to a gradually shrinking voucher), Medicare will go bankrupt (or start making drastic benefit cuts) far sooner than 2024. And if Romney keeps his pledge to repeal the $716 billion in Obamacare savings to Medicare (which are essentially cuts to payments for providers), Medicare will become insolvent by 2016, 8 years earlier than expected. That means both people under 55 and those already on Medicare on close to that age will be screwed.

For fiscal conservatives, you of all people should know how a Republican administration will doom America's fiscal future. Now, you may be entranced by that young Wisconsin Senator Paul Ryan, how he eloquently points out the drastic position that America is in fiscally and how he promises to fix that. However, you should know that it is all bull@!$%#. The Ryan plan does not balance the budget until 2030 at best. It achieves those savings through a drastic reform of government services since the New Deal of the 1930s. Assuming that entitlements and defense (including veterans' benefits) will not be touched, every government program from food stamps to education to unemployment insurance and civilian R&D will face cuts of upwards of 40%. And the Center of Budget and Public Policy (along with the CBO) state that the Ryan plan will ELIMINATE every government program save defense, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

And finally, to the middle class, to the real job creating engine of economic growth, I bring a tale of woe and despair if Romney is elected President of this fair land. Romney claims to have the know-how to create 12 million jobs, and (to paraphrase him) he says that he will do that if you give him $5 trillion in tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans. In order to pay for those tax cuts, you will foot the burden; that's right, YOU will pay for trillions in tax cuts for the wealthy. Romney claims that he will create jobs with this, more free trade agreements, and his energy policy of "drill baby drill," even though we heard the same bull@!$%# from that idiot Bush 43. His tax cuts for the rich and spending cuts for the poor and middle class (yes, he will do that) are simply part of a conservative ploy to roll back the New Deal and shrink the size of government. If Romney is elected, and the Ryan plan passed through Congress (which could hypothetically happen, if the GOP takes over the Senate and keeps the House), it will be the largest redistribution of wealth in U.S. history and signalling the death-knell of economic equality and the middle class in America. I cannot guarantee that this will happen, since Romney may turn to the center, but considering that Romney will be surrounded by hard-line conservatives in Congress and in the White House, I doubt that is possible. Vote for your brain, America, and don't let the hard-liners take over the country.

Creating a budget takes leadership because no matter how good it is, someones going to be unhappy.

This might be a consequence of the political game. When you are overly cautious thinking that you can ride the tide as it seems was the Romney campaign calculation, you are leaving your flanks open to your opponent attacks. You don't want your opponent to define you as a candidate.

The biggest blunder (or one of them) of the Romney camp was the public revelation or the etch a sketch strategy. After a contentious primary season where Mr Romney has to move so far to the right in order to secure the nomination, the transition to the center should have been smooth and fast. He has laid out a pretty decisive plan that includes both reduction of spending and tax increases for the top 1%. This was part of the Simpson Boules plan that Ryan was a part off and voted against. There is a ton of information out there, don't let some talking head dictate what you should think take the time and research the topics most important to you and make an Educated Decision.

You are supposing that Obamacare will rein in costs. That is not necessarily true. It may stop some growth in Medicare costs but there are also studies that say doctors will start to retreat from serving those patients. One in six hospitals will no longer be profitable. There are many issues still needing to be addressed.

Who's creating this legislation? Who establishes the need for new legislation or changed legislation? Oftentimes, Senators and Congressmen "introduce" new legislation to their respective floors outside of any requests from their constiuencies. Where is this legislation coming from?

Lobbyists and Special Interest groups. They constantly draft legislation that they bring to their targeted representatives to ensure this legislation gets introduced on the floors of the Congress and Senate. Lobbyists and Special Interest groups are oftentimes supported and paid for by Corporations and special groups of citizens who believe their particular cause is more important than normal citizens day-to-day concerns.

Why is the current tax bracket for Millionaires, Corporate Executives, and other high level Corporate citizens at historical lows WHILE the Capital Gain's tax rate is also at historical lows? Because the people with lots of money control the lobbyists, who control the PAC and Super-PAC money, and (as as side benefit) often have the ear of our elected officials BEFORE the elected official even spends any time listening to any individual citizen.

So... Why does Mitt Romney hide his taxes? Because of the American Outrage that would emerge as we realize that this guy, who bitches about people on welfare sucking at the taxpayer teat, isn't much of a taxpayer himself.

Both Ross Perot and Kerry were far richer than Romney but it wasn't an issue. Of course they weren't running on a platform to cut their own taxes to zero they felt they had enough. Cutting the top rate 10% and eliminating capital gains would indeed cut Romney's 10.3% rate to zero. They had no problem releasing tax returns, didn't have offshore accounts, start an offshore shell company in a tax haven country to avoid taxes or create a so called blind trust but have it ran by his friend and personal attorney as Romney has. And both Perot and kerry were quite open with what they planned unlike Romney saying trust me. Maybe all that has something to do with not trusting Romney. The candidates promise the world on the campaign trail, but can't deliver when the promises require an actual vote and opposing parties. I think that's why Romney has been light on the specifics, as well -- he KNOWS he is going to have to compromise in some way, and he doesn't want to make promises he can't keep (unlike Obama, who promises all sorts of things he can't follow through on.) What makes a president effective isn't how well he can demonize the other party; it's how well he can work with the other party. And Obama just can't seem to work with his congress. At ALL!!

KingK - the unfortunate facts are that our Embassys have been targeted and hit in the past. Our country always has our citizens safety as their paramount concern. Sometimes horrible things happen. Again this has happened in the past.

There is no doubt our President and everyone who has anything to do with this are devastated that this happened. That was obvious just looking at the President and our Secretary of State. THEY are the ones who face the families and take the responsiblity for the deaths. For you to marginalize this is wrong and says much about who you are.

However, having our own soil hit by terrorists to the extent it was on 9/11/2001 has only happened once - under a Republican President. How quickly you forget that - or maybe you just have selective memory.

Which is way it doesn't take a genius to figure out that they need beefed up security, especially in sensitive areas like the ME and especially around the 9/11 anniversary period. Not to mention a 48 hour notice in advance of the Cairo attack. But the only thing done by Obama's people was to issue a pre-attack apology. Obama's negligence contributed to the cause of the death of one Ambassador and 3 others serving the diplomatic corp.and the loss of sensitive security information. His foreign policy, his security set up , his failure to provide adequate forces to protect and defend our embassies and consulates. If this is what can happen in a "spontaneous' uprising stemming from a movie, what will happen in a planned thought out attack on multiple facilities at one time?

It is not a matter of feeling sad after the fact, it is not a matter of Repub versus Dem, it's a matter of competence. And this incident and the state of our economy shows that Mr. Obama is INCOMPETENT.

Obama is actually cutting $400 billion, not $200 billion from the deficit in his 2013 proposal.

I'll believe the black and white numbers directly from the budget submitted to Congress by Obama any day over the spin contained in an "overview" at thw WH website.

President Barack Obama’s budget proposal will raise the federal debt-to-gross domestic product ratio to 80.4 percent in two years, double where it was at the end of 2008, and rising at a clip faster than that of Greece during the same time frame, a group of Stanford economist write in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece.

The Federal Reserve has been propping up the economy via liquidity injections into the financial sector that keep interest rates low, but fiscal reforms are needed to make the economy sound again.

Public spending has been rising in the last several years and eventually, interest payments on those debts will rise and make the country’s debt burdens more difficult to service without raising taxes.

“One result will be ever-higher income and payroll taxes on all taxpayers that will reach over 80 percent at the top and 70 percent for many middle-income working couples,” Stanford economists George Shultz, Michael Boskin, John Cogan, Allan Meltzer and John Taylor write in The Wall Street Journal.
