Romney ratchets up criticism of Obama on initial response to embassy attacks

GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney criticizes the Obama administration concerning their response to the "disgusting" attack on the US consulate in Libya in which Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

Updated 2:50 pm ET Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Wednesday condemned a statement made by the American embassy in Cairo that criticized a video made by an Israeli-American that portrayed the prophet Muhammad in a disparaging way and may have sparked mob attacks on the consulate in Benghazi, Libya, as well as on the Cairo embassy.

The Libya attack killed four Americans including Chris Stevens, U.S. ambassador to the North African nation.

Repeating criticism he made in a statement overnight, Romney slammed the initial U.S. embassy statement put out in Cairo on Tuesday as “disgraceful” and “a severe miscalculation” that was “akin to apology.”

He said it was “a terrible course for America to stand in apology for our values ... Apology for America’s values is never the right course.”

The GOP candidate said President Barack Obama was responsible for the Cairo embassy statement -- even though White House officials had on Tuesday night disavowed it.

Related: First Thoughts: Over the top

“It’s their administration that spoke,” Romney told reporters at a press conference in Florida. “The president takes responsibility not just for the words that come from his mouth but also for the words that come from his ambassadors, from his administration, from his embassies, from his State Department. They clearly sent mixed messages to the world.”

Romney said the White House disavowal of the Cairo embassy statement “reflects the mixed signals they’re sending to the world.”

Mitt Romney is standing by his original statement regarding the events in Libya and Egypt as reporters piled on questions about the timing of his comments. Former Ambassador Richard Williamson discusses.

But NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reported that the Cairo embassy statement was issued six hours before the mob attacked the embassy. She pressed Romney foreign policy advisor Ambassador Richard Williamson to explain why Romney had criticized a statement made before the mob assault.

Williamson said the White House was trying to distract from the substance of the issue by focusing on the timing of the Cairo statement. “The fact is the substance of what the governor said last night was true -- he continues to stand by it,” Williamson told Mitchell on MSNBC.

Williamson said the Cairo embassy statement “was re-issued after the U.S. compound in Cairo was breached.” He contended that “the White House didn’t respond and back away  from it and say they did not approve of this (Cairo embassy) statement until many hours later after President Obama had seen the statement from Gov. Romney.”

House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., told Mitchell that the Benghazi attack was “a well-armed, well-coordinated event” and not mere spontaneous mob violence.

Rogers kept his distance from Romney’s condemnation of the Cairo embassy statement, saying, “I’m not exactly sure what Gov. Romney was specifically talking about. I think probably what you saw there was the frustration over a foreign policy that is probably is a little out of kilter … .”

The attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya and in Cairo almost immediately became a campaign issue Tuesday night, ending the hiatus in political action for the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

NBC's Richard Engel reports from outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, where Egyptians have lowered the level of their protests against a controversial anti-Islam movie made by an Israeli-American filmmaker. However, there may be nationwide protests on Friday called by the ruling Muslim Brotherhood party.

At 10:25 p.m. ET Tuesday night -- after news of the attacks in Cairo and Benghazi but before it was confirmed Stevens had been killed -- the Romney campaign released a statement in which Romney said, “I'm outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi.  It's disgraceful that the Obama Administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”

Romney’s criticism of the “Obama Administration's first response” was a reference to the following statement issued by the American embassy in Cairo: “The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims -- as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."

Charles Dharapak / AP

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney makes comments on the killing of U.S. embassy officials in Benghazi, Libya, while speaking in Jacksonville, Fla., Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012.

After the Romney campaign issued his statement on Tuesday night, Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt issued one of his own, saying, “We are shocked that, at a time when the United States of America is confronting the tragic death of one of our diplomatic officers in Libya, Governor Romney would choose to launch a political attack.”

A few minutes after Romney spoke on Wednesday morning, Obama appeared in the White House Rose Garden with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and said, “The United States condemns in the strongest terms this outrageous and shocking attack.”

The president said he had ordered increased security protection for U.S. diplomatic posts around the world and pledged to “work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people.” He added, “We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act and make no mistake: justice will be done.”

Obama said the lives of Stevens and his colleagues “stand in stark contrast to those of their attackers” because they “stood up for freedom and human dignity.”

Obama said the United States “rejects all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others -- but there is absolutely no justification for this type of senseless violence. None.” He said many Libyans had joined the United States in condemning the attack in Benghazi.

The president made no reference to Romney’s statements in his brief remarks.

Former Sen. Blanche Lincoln and former Sen. John Sununu talk about the political reaction to the attack in Libya that killed the U.S. Ambassador Stevens.

When a reporter asked Romney Wednesday morning whether he had “jumped the gun” in reacting Tuesday night to the Cairo embassy statement, the Republican said, “I don’t think we ever hesitate when we see something which is a violation of our principles. We express immediately when we feel that the president and his administration have done something which is inconsistent with the principles of America. Simply put, having an embassy which has been breached and has protestors on its grounds, having the violated the sovereignty of the United States, having that embassy reiterate a statement effectively apologizing for the right of free speech -- is not the right course for an administration.”

Later in an impromptu remark, Romney also commented on the brewing controversy over whether Obama refused to schedule a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a United Nations gathering.

NBC’s Mitchell reported that Israeli officials had suggested Tuesday that the White House was snubbing Netanyahu by not scheduling a meeting in late September.

The White House issued a statement Tuesday night saying that “contrary to reports in the press, there was never a request for Prime Minister Netanyahu to meet with President Obama in Washington, nor was a request for a meeting ever denied.”

But Netanyahu’s office emailed a contradictory statement saying “the Prime Minister’s Office requested a meeting with President Obama during his visit. The White House informed Jerusalem that a meeting during those days won’t be possible due to the President’s agenda.”

Referring to all this, Romney said "I stand with our friends in Israel … I stand strong with our allies. I can't ever imagine, if the prime minister of Israel asked to meet with me, I can't imagine ever saying no. They're our friends; they're our closest allies in the Middle East.”

For Mitt to even be commenting is highly offensive and anti productive. He's using the death of someone for his own political gain. Tasteless, tacky and an insight to his personality.

At a time when politicians should be sending a unified response about these attacks, Romney sows the seeds of division to the American people.

All for political gain.

There is nothing wrong with criticizing this disgusting movie as well as the senseless violence.

Each time Romney makes a concrete statement of any kind it turns out to be absent of sound judgment in the face of the kinds of economic and foreign policy difficulties our country has to manage. I can't wait for his campaign to release actual policy ideas, such as which popular tax deductions he's going to take away from us in order to pay for tax cuts for everyone, including the super-rich.

Mitt Romney and the Republicans are merely the human form of Cockroaches, but all you Freedom Loving Americans just need to do is keep Shining your individual "Spotlight of Truth Lamps" on these Cretins, and watch them go back to scurrying under the rocks from whence they came.

Mitt Romney is a known Liar, admitted Tax-Cheat, and probable Felon.

He has stolen all your hard-working Pension Fund money which he then Laundries in his phony Cayman Island shell companies, so he can then Hide your Money in his hidden Swiss Bank accounts, so he won't have to pay his fair-share of Taxes, and then he uses your stolen Money to buy his Stepford Trophy Wife a Olympic Show Horse and takes that off his Taxes by calling it a "Therapy Horse". hello?

Plus he lied about being CEO of Bain Capital.

Typical GOP take a tragedy that a GOPer started and turn it into something political. The problem started with a Israeli-American, with the help of 100+ jewboys making an anti-muslim movie and spreading it across this planet.

The staffer, NOT the President made the comment. The pu$$cake who made the movie should be charged with inciting mayhem and causing the death of the 4 Americans. If this "film-maker" doesn't face the music, then more of this crap will happen. The staffer had NO clue at the time of the attacks what the root cause was.

The GOP are the root cause of hatred in America. Their hatred for anything non-white-America is disgusting. Israel will be Americas downfall and the jews we support will kill US!

Here is what is really going on, despite what NBC wants you to know.

At 11:53pm last night Talking Points Memo released a statement from the Obama campaign condemning Mitt Romney for criticizing something the White House itself disavowed -- an appalling apology issued by the State Department.

Eight hours later, President Obama finally got around to condemning the monsters who attacked us on our own soil and killed our fellow citizens.

Yesterday, on the 11th anniversary of September 11, the Obama White House snubbed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accepted an invitation from David Letterman, and apologized to Islamists upset over a film that mocks Islam and Mohammed -- something "artists" in America do to Christianity with my tax dollars on a fairly regular basis.

First off: Why is our Embassy apologizing for a film no one has seen and apologizing for freedom of speech and expression? In a word, that's un-American. And let's remember that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton doubled down on the apology. Last night, though, the White House finally disavowed the apology, but now the hypocritical and wildly dishonest Obama campaign is lashing out at Mitt Romney for being critical of the same apology the White House itself disavowed.

Here's the Romney statement:

I’m outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi. It’s disgraceful that the Obama administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.

So I guess it's okay for President Obama to criticize that disgraceful apology but not Romney. And now the left is claiming the apology in question from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo was made before the compound was attacked. But it's just a fact that the on Twitter and elsewhere, even after the attack, that the Embassy defended and stood by the apology.

And let me reiterate that after the attack, Hillary doubled down on it.

Via TPM: Here's the hysterical and dishonest response from the Obama campaign:

“We are shocked that, at a time when the United States of America is confronting the tragic death of one of our diplomatic officers in Libya, Governor Romney would choose to launch a political attack,” Obama’s campaign press secretary Ben LaBolt said in a statement.

Not only is the Obama campaign's "shock" completely manufactured -- damn that Romney for criticizing the same apology Obama just disavowed! -- but the Obama campaign is dishonestly trying to make it sound as though Romney was exploiting a tragic death. Moreover, I'm unaware of any condemnation of the Islamists who attack and killed our embassy personnel made before the campaign condemned Mitt Romney.

So who's really playing politics here?

If only the Obama campaign could find half the outrage they saved for Romney to level at the murderers.

Well, you know, priorities.

Have to say I somewhat agree with Romney. This man has the right, guaranteed by the Constitution, to free speech. If he wants to criticize Islam, that's his right.

I don't think the Embassy should be apologizing. They should be emphasizing that the movie reflects the beliefs/values of only the man who made it, not the country as a whole. Just as those who killed the ambassador do not represent the beliefs/values of all Muslims.

But both Obama and Romney are still missing the underlying issues here of imperialist American policy, so I don't expect anything to change as a result of this attack.

Here is what too many people are missing - Mitt Romney included. The film was made by a person of Jewish faith who, by his own statement, places Muhhamad and Jesus on the same level - he does not believe Jesus was the son of God, and our saviour. In his statement, Mitt Romney made the critical point of referring to our country's values - but as a Mormon he either must stand for his beliefs in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, or stand indifferent. Mitt Romney has shown his true colors as a person who places public opinion, (via false witness) that his religious beliefs. You can't have it both ways - you either believe Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour, or you can defend those who do not believe - Mitt has shown his heart.

The Republican leaders do not seem to agree with ROMNEY.

But no Republican leader criticized President Obama on Wednesday morning, and called instead for stronger security at U.S. diplomatic facilities, the swift capture and punishment of the perpetrators and a renewed commitment to pro-democracy efforts in the Arab world.

“We mourn for the families of our countrymen in Benghazi, and condemn this horrific attack,” House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio)said in a statement. “Eleven years after September 11, this is a jolting reminder that freedom remains under siege by forces around the globe who relish violence over free expression, and terror over democracy — and that America and free people everywhere must remain vigilant in defense of our liberties.”

Following his statement, Boehner ordered flags over the U.S. Capitol to be flown at half-staff in honor of Stevens and the other American personnel killed in Libya.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) added in a separate statement that, “These attacks will not deter America from continuing to promote peace, democracy, individual and religious freedom and an unwavering respect for human life throughout the region and the world.”

In the Senate, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) usually reserves his morning Senate floor remarks to sharply criticize Obama administration policy. But Wednesday he struck a more somber tone and expressed support for “employing every available tool at our disposal to ensure the safety of Americans overseas and to hunt down those responsible for these attacks.

“Among the things we can all agree on in Washington is that attacks on the U.S. and its representatives will be met with resolve, and that America’s presence and defense of our national interests across the globe will not be deterred by the acts of violent extremists,” McConnell said.

Even Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) andLindsey Graham (R-S.C.) — a troika that regularly critiques the Obama administration’s foreign policy — urged Obama to continue supporting democracy efforts in Libya and Egypt.

“We cannot give in to the temptation to believe that our support for the democratic aspirations of people in Libya, Egypt, and elsewhere in the broader Middle East is naive or mistaken,” the senators said in a joint statement. “We cannot resign ourselves to the false belief that the Arab Spring is doomed to be defined not by the desire for democracy and freedom that has inspired millions of people to peaceful action, but by the dark fanaticism of terrorists.”

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) appeared to call out Romney for attacking Obama in the early hours after the attack. In a statement condemning the attacks, Lautenberg added, “At at a time when we should be standing together against these senseless acts of violence, Mitt Romney offered an atrocious political response that undermines our unity in the face of threats to Americans around the world.”

Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) expressed similar sentiments, saying in a statement: “This is one of those moments when Americans must unite as Americans. It is exactly the wrong time to throw political punches. It is a time to restore calm and proceed wisely.”

Later, in a conversation with reporters, Kerry called on Romney to apologize for his comments, and call them irresponsible, callous and reckless, according to reporters present for the exchange.

I would point out that the anti-Muslim movie in question was funded and created by Israeli-"americans". Their intent is to stir up trouble in the Middle East in the hopes of getting Obama to back an attack on Iran prior to the election. When the movie played once to a nearly empty theater, the Israelis dubbed parts of a "14-minute trailer" in Arabic and put it on youtube to try to further inflate Arab public opinion. Analysts are saying that the the dubbing was most likely done by an Israeli. This is based on the use of several "inappropriate Arabic words" because apparently Israelis avoid certain Arabic words because of their similarity to Hebrew words. The Mossad must be slipping.

Once again Baby Netanyahu has his diaper in a wad because Obama will not back hius plans for an iommediate war with Iran. This is just Israeli trouble-making at its worst. They know that Obama will never back a first strike against Iran without something more than circumstantial evidence and that if Romney is elected that NO US President has evcer committed to a major military operation in his first year in office. This leaves Baby up the creek without a paddle for at least the next 18 months no matter what happens. He should never have dabbled in American politics in the first place.

And I actually know many Conservative Republicans who don't believe in God, my in-laws among them. Rabid Obama haters but have no use for religion either.

Both Liberals and Conservatives need to watch alienating those among them by pigeonholing an entire group.

No Toxic Chemist, If Romney did not release a statement it would be the first sign yet that he may have what it takes to be a president. No, that anti American POS needs that smirk slapped right off his face. Using this moment when the bodies are still warm to call out our President for something said by a state department employee half way across the world before this even happened goes beyond disgusting. Traitor is the word to describe Willard Romney. Almost as disgusting are the freaks here today defending him.

Yeah, Bin Laden thought so too. :)

Jeff-1592116

If Obama had gotten his way and the enhanced interrogations under Bush were stopped and Gitmo was closed and the Terrorist were give rights, Osama Bin Laden would be alive and well.

It is really unfortante that Obama gets to take credit for something he did everything he could to prevent!

OK, first of all there is no evidence "enhanced interrogation techniques" also known internationally by treaty as torture provided any useful, actionable intelligence whatsoever.

Second, it was President Obama who gave the order to get bin Laden, not President Bush who for all intents and purposes, quit looking for him.

I would address your last thought but I believe my second sentence above works quite well for that. Your rant is that of someone who has nothing. It's like the entire Republican party that can bash Obama but can say nothing more positive about Romney than "he isn't Obama"...pathetic.

By the way, I see you approved of Bush's tactics (you must have thought the war in Iraq was the best thing since sliced bread), you'll love Romney. He hired Bush advisers for foreign policy (who to invade) and finance (how to borrow the money to do it...and keep it off the books).

So, I suppose Romney is going to expect his embassy staff to further inflame any rabble that appears at the door. His sense of diplomacy would be laughable if the circumstances weren't so tragic.

My diagnosis: He's a shameless opportunist looking to exploit the death of American Diplomats for political gain. We can't honestly be considering electing this man president. How much good will he do for the economy when his diplomacy immerges us in more unnecessary, and vastly expensive war?

Romney is an opportunist no different than the opportunist armed with guns and grenades who saw the protests at the embassy as an opportunity to mix in with protesters and takes lives. Romney is not fit to hold public office. Romney can not be trusted with security briefings. He has no sense of right and wrong because he is an irresponsible war monger much like Dick Cheney and John Bolton. This is a dangerous man America. Do we want another 10 years of war with Libya and then Iran? That is what a Romney presidency will get you. Better wake up and vote. Obama/Biden 2012.

... this is what mitt the twit believes ...the "almost would be president" he condemns other religions ... his religion is based on the following "facts" ...

Mormonism includes many other unusual teachings which you will probably not be told about until you have been in the church for a long time. These teachings are not revealed to investigators or new converts because those people are not yet considered ready to have more than "milk" as doctrine. The Mormons also probably realize that if investigators knew of these unusual teachings they would not join the church.

God was once a man like us.

  • God has a tangible body of flesh and bone.
  • God lives on a planet near the star Kolob.
  • God ("Heavenly Father") has at least one wife, our "Mother in Heaven," but she is so holy that we are not to Discuss her nor pray to her.
  • Jesus was married.
  • We can become like God and rule over our own universe.
  • There are many gods, ruling over their own worlds.
  • Jesus and Satan ("Lucifer") are brothers, and they are our brothers - we are all spirit children of Heavenly Father.
  • Jesus Christ was conceived by God the Father by having sex with Mary, who was temporarily his wife.
  • We should not pray to Jesus, nor try to feel a personal relationship with him.
  • The "Lord" ("Jehovah") in the Old Testament is the being named Jesus in the New Testament, but different from "God the Father" ("Elohim").
  • In the highest degree of the celestial kingdom some men will have more than one wife.
  • Before coming to this earth we lived as spirits in a "pre-existence", during which we were tested; our position in this life (whether born to Mormons or savages, or in America or Africa) is our reward or punishment for our obedience in that life.
  • Dark skin is a curse from God, the result of our sin, or the sin of our ancestors. If sufficiently righteous, a dark-skinned person will become light-skinned.
  • The Garden of Eden was in Missouri. All humanity before the Great Flood lived in the western hemisphere. The Ark transported Noah and the other survivors to the eastern hemisphere.
  • Not only will human beings be resurrected to eternal life, but also all animals - everything that has ever lived on earth - will be resurrected and dwell in heaven.
  • Christ will not return to earth in any year that has seen a rainbow.
  • Mormons should avoid traveling on water, since Satan rules the waters.
  • The sun receives its light from the star Kolob.
  • If a Gentile becomes Mormon, the Holy Ghost actually purges his Gentile blood and replaces it with Israelite blood.
  • A righteous Mormon will actually see the face of God in the Mormon temple.
  • You can identify a false angel by the color of his hair, or by offering to shake his hand

..... PERHAPS THE USA SHOULD HAVE SENT "CURIOUSITY" TO THE PLANET KOLOB .... IMAGINE THE REVELATION ... OUR PROBLEMS HERE ON EARTH WOULD BE SOLVED

Said Romney:

(IT is)...a terrible course for America to stand in apology for our values ... Apology for America’s values is never the right course.”

Are you, sir, saying it's OK to denigrate religion, ANY religion? As likely as not, this violence was, in no small part, sparked by the movie ridiculing Islam and it's prophet.

So you mean to say that it's OK to hate on mormonism too? Christianity? Judaism? Buddhism even?

You mean to say that ridiculing religion is an American value?!?

Now, says Obama:

(The United States)...“rejects all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others -- but there is absolutely no justification for this type of senseless violence. None.”

That does not sound like an apology, Mr. Romney. That sounds to me more like one of the tenets this country was founded on, that people are free to worship as they choose, or not at all, but that hatred towards religion, ANY religion, is not tolerable.

What say you, Mr. Romney? Is this just more political ankle biting for the sake of winning this election at the expense of tearing down our president? A man whose job I HOPE you never take over!

Throughout the Democratic convention, Mitt Romney was belittled about his absence of foreign affair experience and Obama was cheered about how stellar his abilities. He was attacked for pointing out the dangers that still exist in the mid east inferring that Romney wants to beat the war drum and that his policy of keeping the defense budget strong is a ridiculous notion.

He pointed out Obama's negligence of Israel and now we see Obama ignoring Israel's Prime Minister because he doesn't fit into his busy schedule, this a man, who believe me will pull the trigger if he feels his country is threatened, and of course he does, yeh, let's ignore him, the one who could start World War 3.

If Romney says nothing about this incident, he will be criticized; and as he has spoken out, he is criticized, but he is doing what he must. He looks more Presidential than the Obama. Like it or not, the reality is this world is a dangerous place and there are many out there that would like to see us disappear as a nation.

Most of you are missing the point. Freedom of speech includes satirical or any other critisism of religion and gov't. If not you are supporting censorship. We can't just bow down to other countries and bend our laws to meet the needs of other countries, no matter what the situation is. We can't apologize for our freedoms. We can express that one persons views aren't those of our country, but don't apologize. And any political situation is fair game on either side.

What I've read in most of these post profoundly astonishes me. You all are mostly mimicking exactly what the news media said and what they want you to - they really don't want you to think for yourselves and sadly you respond as they programed you to.

The White House comes out and tells the world that we are abusing our free speech - totally without knowing (or knowing but just trying to make political gain from it) what happened in Libya. Hiliary Clinton calls them our friends - WTF, they just killed our Ambassador.

Romney is the only one that came out and defended America and condemned this attack and killing - and ALL YOU FOOLS can do his criticize him??.........you are all morons and zombies of the Fatherland of Obambaloney. If the circumstances were switched you'd all be praising Obama for his heroic statement in defense of America on 9/11 - I am saddened by your collective stupidity.....but not surprised by it.

I am very sad for the loss of Ambassador Chris Stevens and all the others who were killed by the mob. When the truth comes out (but with obambaloney at the helm I have my doubts) you all will see obama for what he really is - A COWARD and a POLITICAL OPPORTUNIST.

Point them out as untruths. Just saying it doesn't make it so. Misleading is something entirely different than calling them untrue.

For instance. Clinton said, and I paraphrase, all economic growth has happened when Democrats were in the White house. While true it is misleading connecting the dots as such, but the facts are correct on face value.

    Jeff,

The death of the Ambassador and the other staff members is unarguably a tragedy, and all of us should express sympathy for the loss by their families.

    Yes.

That said, please reconsider your umbrage re death and political gain.

Did you miss the part of this thread topic or are you purposely playing ignorant to bolster your lame argument?

Might I remind you of the issue of the late Mrs. Soptic? I think the moral outrage is justified, but only if it is redirected.

Two wrongs make you right? Kind of a tenuous logical stretch you're making there.

They're both sad events, the difference being that the more current one seems to have been a deliberate attempt to fatally harm.

They're not even the same thing apart for death being the common denominator.

FIRST ON CNN: Romney camp tries to manage fallout from Libya response

    Posted by

De Pere, Wisconsin (CNN) - Facing criticism for its aggressive and politically-charged response to Tuesday's violent attacks on the American embassies in Egypt and Libya, Mitt Romney's presidential campaign is quietly advising Republicans how to respond to questions about the campaign's handling of the episode.

In talking points currently being pushed to Republican leaders and top surrogates, the Romney campaign recommends attacking President's Obama "foreign policy of weakness" and dismissing questions about how the campaign responded to the crisis last night.

A sample response, as proposed by the Romney campaign officials in Boston:

"Did Governor Romney 'jump the gun' last night in releasing his statement?"

"No. It is never too soon to stand up for American values and interests."

Oh stop Charlie 191. Romney is a good man who loves this country and doesn't apologize for her.

Total BS. Romney is a LYING scumbag. He's LYING about welfare reform. He's LYING about "you didn't build that." He will take any position, tell any lie, flip-flop all over the place if he thinks he can gain one vote. I never voted for George W. Bush. But if the choice was between Bush and this Romney dirtball, I would gladly vote for Bush. At least with Bush, you know what you have. Romney stands for NOTHING other than getting elected.

Mitt takes a stand on both sides of every issue...examples:

"The Arizona immigration policy is a good model" – Mitt Romney.

"I didn't really support the Arizona immigration policy" – Mitt Romney.

“The Massachusetts healthcare plan should be a model for the nation” – Mitt Romney.

“Healthcare reform should be left to the states” – Mitt Romney.

"Let Detroit go bankrupt" -Mitt Romney.

"I'll take a lot of credit for saving the auto industry" -Mitt Romney.

“I believe Roe v Wade has gone too far.” – Mitt Romney.

“Roe v Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it.”– Mitt Romney.

“I respect and will protect a woman’s right to choose.” – Mitt Romney.

“I never really called myself pro-choice.” – Mitt Romney.

“It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam.” – Mitt Romney.

“I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and represent our country there.” – Mitt Romney.

“I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush.” – Mitt Romney.

“Ronald Reagan is… my hero.” – Mitt Romney.

“I think the minimum wage ought to keep pace with inflation.” – Mitt Romney.

"There’s no question raising the minimum wage excessively causes a loss of jobs.”– Mitt Romney.

“I saw my father march with Martin Luther King.” – Mitt Romney.

“I did not see it with my own eyes.” – Mitt Romney.

“I would like to have campaign spending limits.” – Mitt Romney.

“The American people should be free to advocate for their candidates without burdensome limitations.” – Mitt Romney.

“I supported the assault weapon ban.” – Mitt Romney

"I don’t support any gun control legislation.” – Mitt Romney.

“The stimulus that was passed in early 2009 will accelerate the recovery…” –Mitt Romney.

“The stimulus passed in early 2009 has been a failure.” – Mitt Romney.

Obama w/o consent of Congress, staged massive air strikes killing thousand of innocent Libyans, to drive out Qaddafi, who was no longer a threat to US. Then the country was given to his Muslim Brotherhood, a terrorist group.
Barack is responsible for the killing of 4 Americans in Libya and the destruction of the consulate.

That's highly overstating and misleading. The "collation" airstrikes didn't kill "thousands" of innocent Libyans.

Try to tell the truth next time.

        Jeff,

My point about umbrage had to do with your statement of distaste when you accused Romney of using a death for political gain. I'll table my view about the veracity of your allegation. The quite simple point is the sanctimony that seems to be embedded in your astatement. I don't know how you felt about the Mrs. Soptic incident. You may, or may not, have expressed the same view then as you have today. If you didn't, then I think there is an issue of double standards.

No. Two wrongs don't make me right. And what lame argument? I made no argument at all, at least, not that I am aware. I merely commented on the possibility of a double standard, either by you or by others who express outrage at what they perceive as an attempt at political gain via someone's death, either by illness or by man's inhumanity to man.

You certainly do not need my permission to expound all you want, accuse all you want, or assign intent all you want, on or to what Romney said, but if you weren't outraged by the ad that revolved around Mrs. Soptic, I just don't see how you can so righteously include that part in your post. Not more complicated than that.

Romney is so out-of-touch and ill-informed on foreign policy and status updates the president gets daily, he should stay out of making any kind of statements on foreign issues or actions. His incompetence is super-ceding his ineptness as he continues to open mouth and insert foot. Romney is only good for lying about and acknowledging the Todd Akin Firestorm, the repeated hurdles and road blocks for voting rights, stand silent as soldier in combat is booed on stage by primary contenders and continue to fight the Supreme court sanctioned PPACA. (formerly called RomneyCare, once called ObamaCares and now is the Health Care Act)

        Romney is good at
hiding money in off-shore accounts from the tax man.

Romney did make the statement for political gain. There's no denying it.

I don't know how you felt about the Mrs. Soptic incident. You may, or may not, have expressed the same view then as you have today. If you didn't, then I think there is an issue of double standards.

I've never made a statement about Mrs. Soptic and honestly have no reason to still.

One thing you'll find me do, unlike Mitt and the GOP, is I fact-check my sources prior to making a comment. Well normally. :D

Jeff, this survey is from 2010.... where are the surveys for 2012? I did my research too, there are so many surveys out there done by various groups about this, which is the best or most reliable??? Each group has different rankings and some don't even compare Obama because he has not finished his term yet. There are many surveys that use just a hand full of participants out of millions of US citizens. Everyone has the right to express their opinions, not everyone gets the chance. My opinion is that you have a right to feel confident in this survey, but I have very little faith in any survey.

PS: http://www.siena.edu/pages/1158.asp shows that only a certain group was used to gather facts where only 238 responded.

He seems to exhibit a complete lack of integrity and will do whatever his handlers tell him. I imagine it would be the same if he became president. He would still do whatever his handlers told him. The situation in Libya is the product of Obama's handiwork. Let's face it, as evil as Moammar Quaddafi was, he would NEVER have dared to allow such an attack on a US embassy on Libyan soil.

Mobs of angry Muslims attacked the American embassies in Libya, killing four Americans, and also in Egypt, replacing the American flag with an Islamic one. The Cairo embassy reacted by stating its sympathy for their attackers, and condemning those who offend Muslims. Crazies and thugs outside their doors, and the embassy criticizes people who insult Islam? Romney rightly issued a statement denouncing the attacks and slamming the Obama administration's sympathy for the perpetrators.

Romney gave a speech this morning that refused to back down from his earlier criticism of Obama. He held a press conference saying that America should never apologize for its values, especially not when it's under attack. Romney said the United States should always defend its constitutional values of free speech, and that "it's never too early for the United States Government to condemn attacks on Americans".

Meanwhile, Obama apparently didn't get the message. In his address this morning, he STILL condemned those in the United States who "denigrate the religious beliefs of others". Is he serious? While trying to distance himself from a tweet apologizing for the attackers, Obama essentially agreed with it! The contrast couldn't be clearer: Romney's the only candidate who will defend free speech when violent Islamists use as it an excuse for violence.

Prior to the 'Arab Spring', Libya was a friend to the USA and a strong ally in the 'War on Terror' since Y2001. Libya was peaceful and a stable force in the region until B H Obama turned his back on it.

Please explain how the so-called "protesters" were able to climb the wall of the USA Embassy without getting stop? After the fact, the USA has dispatched 200 Marines to the site. People have to die before this president does anything positive. Obummer!

Your lack of facts and knowledge about the North Africa region is very obvious. Please show me any "anti-American" attack and/or event connect to Libya in the past 15 years. The Colonial was once very anti-American in the 80s to up to the mid 90s, but NOT since that period. Libya provided substantial terror information for the region to the USA since Y2001.

I have business in the region and I travel there often before the so-called "Arab Spring" (not). I was there last month for a short period and I will not go back anytime soon.

Obama didn't "apologize", in fact, if you fact check that talking point prior to this attack it was rated as a lie.

Dividing the American response to this catastrophic event is wrong and anti-American.

The state department did issue an apology to the pissed off savages who had taken down and burned the american flag and replaced it with one praising Bin laden.

Perhaps if 0bama and Biden weren't grandstanding and spiking the football every day bragging about killing bin laden they wouldn't have attacked the embassy.

It was once accepted etiquette that politics stopped at our shores. By shooting off his big mouth, before all the facts were known even, Romney didn't only undermine our president but further risked the safety of other foreign service officials by stoking a very dangerous fire.

Mr Romney, right now we need the people in charge handling this volatile situation. You and Mr Senor need to keep your asinine comments in the peanut gallery where they belong.

As for Romney's comment about American Principles, please tell me exactly what those are that every single American would agree to be a valid American principle. That anti-Muslim film produced by a group of Israeli-Americans does NOT fit what I would consider part of the American principles, as outlined in the Preamble of the US Constitution. I hope the IRS would finally remove all non-prifit status rights from that FL minister, because to me he is a traitor to the US, the same as the Israeli-Americans who produced that film.

The state department did issue an apology to the pissed off savages who had taken down and burned the american flag and replaced it with one praising Bin laden.

Oh please Elliot, at least try to be honest. Here's the Statement:

"Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy," the embassy said.

"Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others," the embassy said.

Does that really sound like capitulation to you? ...well maybe it would to you.

Perhaps if 0bama and Biden weren't grandstanding and spiking the football every day bragging about killing bin laden they wouldn't have attacked the embassy.

Grand standing and spiking the football for getting bin Laden? Funny, I don't remember Obama landing on a carrier with a cod piece in his pants and "mission accomplished" banner in the background...and that was for "starting" a war Obama had to finish.

And you want to talk about divisive? Look what that assclown 0bama is doing here with his class warfare? Or anyone on the left, especially the goons on msnbc who call everything racist in hopes of shoring up the black vote against Romney.

The democrats are calling class warfare...the republicans have actually been waging it for over 30 years. How dare we call it like we see it. Same goes for your racist claim. Obama was the only president in American history that was hounded to provide a birth certificate. Obama is the only president in American History to be hounded about his college records, no president or candidate has ever released those records. RWNJs claimed Obama's foreign, Muslim, "not one of us"...so what's different about Obama...um...let me think.

You cant say anything without being called a racist, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are now racist, golf is now racist, constitution is now racist.

Perhaps only your interpretation of the Constitution. Your comments remind me of the Tea Bagger battle cry "keep your govmnt out of my Medicare".

Let's get a leader in the WH, not a muslim terrorist who bows very low to his superiors in the Middle East.

Oh, you mean the Muslim terrorist who killed bin Laden? that Muslim terrorist? As opposed to the Texas village idiot who kept bin Laden alive for how many years?

Obama is a Muslim - read about his childhood in Indonesia (he is a US citizen???) and his Muslim schooling in Indonesia.

Yes moron, he is a US citizen (you know, born in the USA?). What makes him a Muslim, going to school in Indonesia for a few years as a child? If you lived in Italy for a few years would that make you a Roman Catholic?

This is a stark example of obama's LACK of leadership. Note how the Dems are all making an issue of all other details OTHER THAN OBAMAs LACK OF LEADING.

Brilliant statement, you give no example. Are you the future of the Republican Party? We can only hope.

The Democrats dont want to acknowledge this fact, just like they ignore every other fact tossed in their face.

As a Neo-Conservative you don't deal in facts, how would you even recognize one?

Now that it has turned to a debacle, now that terrorists have taken control, Barry wants to distance himself from the failed results. Romney is correct in his assertion that the Obama Administration's response is pathetic and weak. But we shouldn't be surprised. It is the response we always get from OBumbles when he is trying to shirk responsibility: "It's not my fault, It's Bush's fault. It's Romney's fault. It's America's fault, etc etc......."

By the way why wouldn't the president take the time to handle this situation. The answer is easy he had a compain to tend to like he has done the entire past year. Thats all Obama is about.

Free speech is more limited than you may think. You can't yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater because the resulting riot can get people injured or killed. This was established long ago and on good legal, moral and ethical grounds. If you make an intentionally inflammatory video, knowing that it will incite violence and possibly get someone killed (and we have several examples of where inflammatory propaganda against Muhammad caused exactly that), is that not the same thing?

When free speech costs lives, it is no longer free.

Yes free speech is limited. Has been especially in the past year. It is not free any more. This conflict has lost too many lives and getting us no where. Someone on this discussion said Romney would start another war. What do you think this is, playtime. There are not any more FDR's in this world, but he had it right. Did President Roosevelt stand around and studder when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Why don't some of you research that speech he made to the country on Dec 7,1941? No, Hawaii didn't belong to us, but that military base was, They did not attack Hawaii, they attact the United States of America on that day. That book that was written was an excuse, to attack us once more, only this time it was an American Embassy, and I will, mention this has happend before, only them we answered back with militay fire power. Another person wrote something about Romney standing in front of the flag and lied. Well, Obama sits in the oval office at a desk and never once have I seen any pictures of him saluting the American flag when protcal lcalled for it as Commaner in Chief, neither has Mrs. Obama. So tell me the difference in him and Romney. Roneys speech had meaning and purpose. He didn't attack Obama because this is the election year, at least he appeared toe up set over the whole thing. Now Obama sounded like the speech was written for him and he had to read it, where Romney spoke his true feelings about America. This has been an ugly election year, one of the worst, both parties slinging mud and filth. I am neither party, and I have not made up my mind who will get my vote. Someone also said something about who does Romney think he is to get up there and give a speech like he was president. Being an American gives him the right. the same right we as citizen have. Beware and be caefulwhat you wish for, you just might get it. Then it will to late.

unemployment was 10.2% in 2010 and now its 8.2%. We created 4.5 million jobs since, you can look that up with department of labor. If your house morons didn't block every proposal that President put and work with him, we would have faster recovery.

what your repukes destroyed economy and president didn't clean up fast enough and now you think the same morons will do any better. Most of Romney advisers were Bush Advisers so what different did he will do then Bush?

Now you might claim Romney is business man, ok only two presidents that ran on business experience was Hoover(great depression) and Bush II(2008 meltdown). Plus in Massachussets 47 out of 50 job creation, that shows his business experience, doubling of all the fees=raising taxes. The only good thing he did is RomneyCare, but he can't even run on that because he is attacking ACA which is same thing. Oh yea if you going to mention unemployment rate ofi Massachussets when he left, that because people left state to find jobs. You can't have 47 out of 50 job creation rating any other way. If you want to replace President Obama, you should have nominated somebody better then him like Huntsman, but Romney lol. Flip floper in chief

Currently, the polls, when aggregated, give Romney only a 1 in 4 chance of winning on Nov 6th. In order to do so, he must sweep EVERY tossup state. At this point he is only leading in North Carolina and even that lead is shrinking daily. He has bailed in Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and is trailing badly in Florida. The math is no better for Romney than his invisible "plans" for economic recover, foreign policy, domestic policy, etc.

Romney's campaign died when he refused to release only one year of tax returns (2010) and an "estimate" of one other (the real return for 2011 won't be ready until "early 2013.") He demanded ten years from Ryan, though.

Romney's campaign is just about exactly where McCain was after the 9/15 debacle when his campaign collapsed. The desperate rhetoric is the same.

The proof will be before midnight on November 6th, but for now you can just check the latest polls.

Right, Nov. 6th is the only one that counts - as for the latest polls they are only served up by the pollsters to boost the morale of those who need their confidence re-verified with their messiah(much like cheerleaders due to the fans when their team is losing and the home team fans need "encouragement")! In reality they mean squat! BTW you'll see more accurate polls around the last two weeks before the election because that's when the poll takers will be trying to boost up (repair/substantiate) their own reps. by providing more accurately obtained numbers!

I kinda like the way romney came out on the embassy attacks, its refreshing to see someone take a stand and tell it like it is without a teleprompter... and not waffle around the subject and have to be convinced that what he says won't offend anyone....Instead of 50 marines being sent it should be 1000 and drop the hammer...the only response these people understand is violence, so send them violence...

Speaking of gravely distorted, would you care to back up your "3 terms" comment with documented evidence? Is it out of love and kindness that you lie?

Romney was wrong to start making these kinds of comments, and he knows it! But let him talk his bloomin' head off, it will only help Obama!

There comes a time when we need to tell the offended parties that we stand for a few things, such as freedom of expression, something they do not like, so tough! How about Morsi being totally quiet about the attack on our Cairo Embassy. Remember that the Lybian Government has already made statements condemning the attack on the Benghazi Consulate and the killing of the 4 people! Those people are better informed than Romney!

Considering that the ambassador was brought to the Libyan hospital at 7pm ET, I would guess that the embassy was attacked during and after the taping. What should the president do? He can be kept informed just as well taping for Letterman as he can in the oval office, and the Letterman show would be an inappropriate place to display a public reaction to all this. This is pretty standard MO for any president. Look at Bush II's initial reaction (or lack thereof) to 9/11. Stop trolling.

And people talk about Romney's anti-Muslim anti-Arab screed, you have to remember he is NOT a Christian. That is, to a point, he does not accept the same theology that is accepted by every Christian church, both Catholic and Protestant --- the Nicene Creed.

Romney is a guy who believes that American Indians are a "lost" tribe is Israel and they they spoke Hebrew and were pale-skinned. Christ came an ministered among them, but they refused to follow him, so he turned them brown, gave them many languages, and said the first Christian that came along could have their land. Mitt's campaign staff has said that he will be sworn on a King James Bible "atop" a "Book of Mormon." This is the same practice that is used when Mormons are sworn in as federal judges and district attorneys.

The embassy statement was dead wrong. When Americans are being attacked, we should not apologize for one of the most important pillars of our nation. Hell, you people attack Christians all the time. Shouldn't you be apologizing, or can we use that as an excuse to attack liberals now? By your standards, we would be justified.

Nope. Obama showed his "Muslim favoritism" by killing bin Laden and 23 of the top 26 leaders of al-Quaeda.

The statement in question was NOT made by the White House, it came from the embassy in Tripoli (which was NOT attacked) and was made BEFORE the attacks to condemn an Israeli-funded and made movie that was blatantly anti-Muslim.

Obama just created more jobs. He hired more posters for the Narwhale room so that they can try to spin this result of his supporting the terrorists in Libya and using our money and munitions to do it without consulting Congress. This is the direct result because it would never have happened if Gadafi was still in charge. Gadafi who was no longer any threat to the USA, replaced thanks to Obama's help by terrorists who have now killed 5 Americans in our EMbassy. And what does Obama have to say,, oh we won't disparage anyone elses religion, it is a tragedy. WHAT, if you are so weak or on the wrong side enough to not tell it like it is than you have no place in our WHitehouse or even our country.

So what, exactly, was the President's blunder in this situation? What exactly is it about Miss Mittsy's response that calls to you as an American? Can you express yourself on this topic without repeating any lies?

It'd be nice if NBC would mention the fact that the Embassy statement was released BEFORE either the Egyptian or Libyian Embassies/Consulates were attacked. So Romney claiming that it constitutes the Obama Administrations "first response" to the attacks is A LIE. Shocking, I know.

According to Politifact.com, about 42% of what Mitt says ranges from "Mostly False" to "Pants on Fire". Another 28% of his statements are "Half True"; i.e., half false.

Obama does slightly better, with 26% being "Mostly False" to "False", and only 1% being "Pants on Fire" (9% for Romney!). And another 26% of Obama's statements are "Half True".

So which liar do I vote for?

The problem with our government right now (one of the problems; a BIG one) is the fact that the SCOTUS (republican't placed majority) has voted to allow flat out lying by politicians with zero consequences. This decision was made along "party" lines and is absolutely disgusting. But not surprising, coming from the 'party of values' right? un@!$%#ingbelievable.

Politicians always lie or misrepresent their opponent. Because of twitter and facebook and camera phones, your misrepresentations go viral immediately and get slammed. Romney hasn't adjusted to that yet. And he is a dangerous opportunists. His security briefings should stop immediately until he is made to understand that he needs to STFU regarding sensitive international situations. He may have inflamed the situation and made matters worse which would be treasonous on his part.

No! We don't censor free speech. We let stupid people like Romney say whatever they want and destroy their political futures with their words. However, I understand but have not confirmed that the film in questions was produced by the Israelly in this country. Not an American citizen. As far as I'm concerned we have enough citizens in this country advocating hate without adding one more to our numbers. I hope he is deported immediately for not espousing American ideals and causing the death of American diplomats overseas. Yes you can deport someone for such things. They are not American citizens. They haven't earned the right of free speech in this country.

The U.S. is the worlds power. If you want to keep the freedoms you love, you should be more of an advocate for our continued strength around the world. I don't think anyone wants a war with Russia, but we should not appear weak in our negotiations with them either.

Romney has demonstrated beyond a doubt that he lacks the capacity to act as a world leader.

At a time prior to even having all the facts the first reaction of Romney was to volley for political posturing. Romney and his advisors should be ashamed of their conduct and lack of common sense knowledge in dealing with foreign policy events such as the one our country has just faced.

It is extremely inappropriate for candidate Romney to be injecting his politicized opinions into this matter. After Obama was elected president, he specifically declined to make any statements on foreign policy matters before his swearing-in ceremony, saying "we only have one president at a time." Romney should do the same. America can only speak with one voice, and that voice belongs to the elected government.

Romney don't understand, you have to listen, get all your facts, shift it, organize your facts, which is right from wrong and then make a decision and then come out and talk, what Romney did was open his mouth from something he heard, what a dangerous thing for someone aspiring to be President.

I think it is pretty strange for Rommey to come out like this. He is displaying a rather inept approach to a complex issue. I do think most Americans will pull up short and give his attack a second thought and that is something the GOP can't handle can they!! Does he have any deep thought about anything? It really doesn't look like it. Oh, he made the attack so please do reflect off and blame Obama for what Rommey said, that just shows your ignorance.

You can call me what you like, stupd, idiot, igorant, but we are all here for the same reason, out of concern for our country! I do believe in God and Jesus Christ as my savior, and some may not! As Americans, we all have the right to our own religion! I think Obama has failed our country! I do not want to see him get another 4 years to make even more of a mess of our country! If Romney is the replacement, then so be it! As an American, I will respect whichever wins the election, as all Americans should! Just my thoughts on the matter! Ok go on start your personal attacks! The actions of the right wing are not actions that follow the teachings of Jesus Christ by any stretch of the imagine. You may be very sincere in your disapproval of Obama but the nasty, vile and dishonorable acts of the right wing since Obama was elected, in fact since the minute he was elected, is a disgrace.

You are right, I should not have made fun of his religion. It was a cheap...but somewhat funny...exposure of the Mormon faith. But, this country was partly founded on freedom of religion so he should be able to believe whatever he wants to believe. Sorry that I offended you.

Now, for the rest of your post - I won't bother with that - other than to say your statement, "Read a little. It is amazing the facts you learn." is hilarious in light of the other claims you have in your comment.........but not as funny as "GOP are leaders-always have been!" GOP - you accuse all Dems of ignoring facts but after many have tried to point them out to you, you chose to ignore them. Like the time frame of the press release, the time frame of Letterman being filmed, and the time frame of the attacks on the embassy. Going to school in India makes you a Muslim as much as standing in a garage makes you a car. Just as much as spending 2 years in Italy makes you Catholic. If Obama hated America as much as you hint then I'm really glad he doesn't have access to nuclear weapons and their launch codes, because somebody that horrible would definitely use them!

"If you don't agree with the president, and by implication me, then you are a idiotic, racist, useless, unAmerican pos!" I find it funny because every liberal I've come face to face with, usually cowers like a whipped puppy when presented with factual evidence of what an abject failure this "president" has been, and is to this day. And for the record, I've personally found liberals to be big time wusses when it comes to anything remotely physical. Sure, they can talk loudly (ref. debbie wasserman-schultz), but when it comes down to it, they are basically cowards hiding behind other cowards.

NPCDan... Here are a few definitions for you: Conservative: adj. 1. Favoring preservation of the existing order. 2. Moderate; cautious. 3. Traditional

Liberal: adj. 1. Favoring individual freedom and nonrevolutionary reform. 2. Broad-minded or tolerant. 3.Generous; bountiful.

Is it the "Broadminded, tolerant" or the "generous" parts that most irritate you?

Someone needs to attack the freedom of speech laws that protect bullies and hate groups. Hollywood loves to attack religion. Every religion is attacked by Pelosi voters in California. They are bullies, peanut heads, hate mongers, and Liberal Democrats. It is time for tort law to be available to religious groups to attack these liberal hate groups.

I can't believe we even allow religion to enter the political realm at all, what happened to separation of church and state? What about people that don't believe in a god? I personally could care less about anyone's beliefs. There have been more wars started because of religion than any other reason.

I find that those who have that holier than thou attitude usually aren't

Freedom of speech is central to our way of life Jamie. Perhaps your flawed understanding of it might lead you to try citizenship elsewhere?

Just a casual glance at some of these unbelievably stupid, hateful, and utterly nasty comments should tell you all you need to know about WHY the founding fathers had enough sense to establish what should REMAIN a very clear separation of church and state.

So I take it that, since the founders were all white Anglo-Saxon Protestant male landowners, you believe that the population of the US should only consist of WASP male landowners and that they are the only ones to have rights.

Sorry, but slavery sort of blew that theory apart, along with the waves of immigrants who came to these shores from every country and from all religions to find freedom. Not to mention the Native Americans whose country this is.

I would mention that, if the population only consisted of WASP male landowners, it would die out, but I don't think you'd know why.

Read the First Amendment some time. I believe it mentions something in there about religion. That's where the concept of separation of church and state came from. Not a stretch by any means.

You've obvously read an little and learned nothing.

P.S. All the Founding Fathers did NOT go to Christian churches. Many were deists. They believed in God, but did not profess or practice any particular denomination.

The First Amendment does NOT say that freedom of speech belongs only to those people who agree with you. If freedom of speech is denied to the people who don't agree with you, how long do think it will be before it is denied to YOU? Twenty minutes, maybe?

The First Amendment belongs to ALL of us. That includes people you don't like and with whom you do not agree.

Mitt epitomizes the guys who got rid of the draft. This way they can start all kinds of wars but never have a dog (or child) in the fight. I hated the draft but it looks like it was a better way to make people think twice about sending our troops to meaningless wars.

You do have to realize you are commenting on the "liberal home field" known as MSNBC...right? They will never questions ANYTHING this administration does. They are waist deep in the kool-aid and aren't even interested to find out why there is so much kool-aid in the room.

You will never be able to convince them that embassy responses are never issued without at least an established protocol from the sitting administration. The "appeasement" style response is an agreed to template for the countries in which it is used. Clearly the "we're sorry your feelings were hurt" approach stopped the protests...NOT! It clearly worked and stopped the killing of 4 Americans a day later...NOT!

I personally do not have an issue with Romney challenging that initial response. It is a direct reflection of this administration's foreign policy and that is part of what we are voting for. We have become a nation of weak apologizers and not strong doers. It seems anything and everything having to do with Obama is off limits, but they (the Dems) can attack on any idea or issue they see fit when it comes to Romney/Ryan.

Dems...please understand...Romney's criticism came BEFORE the 4 embassy staff were killed and his criticism was over the INITIAL response and how it was repeated after the walls were breached. He isn't politicizing the deaths...get your timetables straight.

I was online most of the night. Romney's rant came after it was known that the consulate was attacked. Now he is trying to change the timeline so he won't look like a dork. In the old days, a Presidential candidate would have expressed support for the President and his country at least initially so that the U.S. could speak with one voice. But the attainment of power is Mitts preemenent value.

Romney isn't fit to be President. He has no guts. He has no heart. Go ahead. Hit me.

Richie Rich needs to get HIS time table straight, and his facts too, while he's at it, although I note neither he nor Eddie Munster seem too interested in facts (two-hour marathon, anyone?)

Read the White House statement. There's no apology there. Richie already knew that. Richie was trying to make political hay--like HE knows anything about foreign relations. His big foreign relations coup consists of insulting his hosts (which seems to also be his big domestic relations coup as well).

Richie was dead wrong. Even his fellow Teapublicans say so. He WAS trying to get political gain from the deaths of four people who actually served this country. That is opportunism at its worst.

Right Doximom. He didn't even lead with condolences to the families. He had to rush out a statement before the President. That was much more important.

Reading the article, the embassy issued the statement BEFORE the attack. Romney jumped the gun in his rush to capitalize on the incident. That caper demostrated that Romney is not presidential. US presidents think things through and don't react with hair-trigger statements. There is no room for mistakes like Romney.

There are only two things I don't like about "Mitt" Romney: His face.

Is this leadership or what? Romney continues display his inexperience and lack of leadeship. Rambling Romney and Ryan have once again proven why they are not ready to lead our country. "Way to go... Mitt the Twitt"

I just try to picture if the roles were reversed and a Democrat had done what Romney did Tuesday night. Republicans would be up in arms for not supporting our commander in chief, the Dem would be accused of being unpatriotic and un-American, etc., etc. We were all told to stand behind Bush no matter how poor his decisions were, and the irony of it is that Obama has handled this issue well. What hypocrisy.

I look at pictures of Romney, and I can't help but feel sad for him. He may look presidential, but that's all. What a pathetic candidate.
