Mitt Romney attacked the Obama administration late Tuesday over the attacks on the U.S. diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya, claiming its first response was "to sympathize" with the attackers.
An Obama campaign spokesman responded by saying they were "shocked" that Romney would "choose to launch a political attack" shortly after the death of a U.S. official. A State Department officer was killed in Benghazi, Libya, after armed protesters stormed the consulate.
As the controversy built on Tuesday over an amateur video allegedly produced in the U.S. – that shows the Prophet Muhammad having sex and calling for massacres – the U.S. Embassy in Cairo issued a statement saying it condemned "efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions.
"Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others," it added.

However an Obama administration official later told Politico that the statement "was not cleared by Washington and does not reflect the views of the United States government."
Romney 'outraged'
Romney said he was "outraged" by the attacks and the killing of the officer in Benghazi.
"It's disgraceful that the Obama Administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks," he added.
Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt criticized Romney for seeking to make the situation a campaign issue.
"We are shocked that, at a time when the United States of America is confronting the tragic death of one of our diplomatic officers in Libya, Governor Romney would choose to launch a political attack," he said.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement that she condemned the attacks "in the strongest terms."
"We are heartbroken by this terrible loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and those who have suffered in this attack," she said of the dead officer.
'Never any justification'
Clinton said Mohamed al-Magariaf, president of Libya's National Congress, had "expressed his condemnation and condolences and pledged his government's full cooperation."
"Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet," she said. "The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind."
Sarah Palin also weighed in on her Facebook page, beginning her remarks by saying "apparently President Obama can't see Egypt and Libya from his house."
"On the anniversary of the worst terrorist attacks ever perpetrated on America, our embassy in Cairo and our consulate in Benghazi were attacked by violent Islamic mobs," she said.
"The Islamic radicals claim that these attacks are in protest to some film criticizing Islam. In response to this, the U.S. embassy in Cairo issued a statement that was so outrageous many of us thought it must be a satire," she added. "The embassy actually apologized to the violent mob attacking us, and it even went so far as to chastise those who use free speech to 'hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.'"
Addressing Obama, Palin asked "How's that Arab Spring working out for us now?"
"It's about time our president stood up for America and condemned these Islamic extremists," she said.

After reading the article, it's clear that the statement from the US embassy in Cairo absolutely IS a condemnation of those who would "hurt religious feelings". However, whether or not it reflects the views of the White House is unclear. Obama says it does not, but he has been pretty good about getting his true feelings out there on a subject and then denying them... In a sense getting to have his cake and eat it too.
It seems clear that this administration does bend over backwards to keep from offending muslims. They have enjoyed a "special" status in this administration that other religions certainly don't have.

As a citizen of this country, Romney has every right to condemn the initial response. I do not believe for a minute that the statement issued by the embassy was not cleared by DC. These people are lifelong diplomats, schooled in protocol. They are stepping back and claiming no knowledge because of the criticism. The response to Libya (and Egypt) should be swift and strong. All aid should be cut until they can control their citizenry. I know comparisons have been made to Carter, but do we have to go so far as having our embassies attacked and possibly taken over? The US Embassy in any country is considered the same as the US - to attack one of our embassies is to attack the US. Obama needs to fix this NOW. He aided these animals in their overthrow of their government - he needs to fix it.
In the meantime Iran's centrifuges keep spinning, getting closer by the day to developing that nuclear warhead.

The Obama White House response was designed to calm things down. The Romney response was designed to flare it's ugly f@#king base without regard or knowledge as to who else might be in immediate danger or what the true situation is. This "film" was on youtube, that is how they found it in Egypt. From there the word traveled to Libya.... Maybe Obama will ban the internet now.

It is a tragedy when people die. And it is a national tragedy when a man who served his country in the State Department dies.
This is indeed a sad day for all Americans.
But we should also be able to look at the facts!
Obama sent this ambassador to a country still in the grips of a civil war, even if the headlines are no longer talking about the daily killings and all the weapons going around after the Gaddafi regime's collapse.
Did the Obama administration make sure there were proper safety and security arrangements for a diplomatic mission?
Remember how Obama sent an ambassador to Syria just a year and a half ago, when Assad started butchering his own people! Finally Obama had to take the ambassador out, but only after several attacks against the embassy, and after the security situation was totally out of control!
With Egypt under the Muslim Brotherhood it's the same thing!
They are not friends of America! And the embassy there was attacked yesterday as well!
Perhaps Obama is trying too hard to prove that he can make friends with all of America's enemies. Perhaps he is trying too hard to advance his ideology at the risk of putting the men and women who represent America in unnecessary danger!
A military base with a small diplomatic mission would have been enough! Why do you need to send an ambassador before you stabilize the security situation first!

It seems you are missing or ignoring a major piece of this equation regarding Romney's response. They condemn the statement put out by the Embassy and say that Obama didn't condemn the violence. The Embassy's statement (not cleared by Washington or the State Dept) was put out BEFORE any of the protests even started!!! This was widely reported on all the news channels this morning. CNN reported this morning that rumors had circulated that the movie was being shown in the US nationwide on 9/11, not just that it was a youtube video. This rumor fueled the fire and the Embassy knew this could cause problems, so it does what it supposed to do, invoke diplomacy to try to avoid anything breaking out. Obviously it did break out and then, after the Ambassador was determined to be unaccounted for, but no one yet knew he had been killed, Romney puts out this extremely irresponsible statement condemning the Administration for something it didn't even do! They really seem to have no clue! Coming from the person who wants to be the President, this is a completely irresponsible move to not know or even check when the statement from the Embassy had been put out, what it was in relation to and, as we have seen time and again from this campaign, get the facts straight, particularly in such a volatile and fluid situation. It really does seem that they have NO diplomatic sense whatsoever. And for those of you who think we should have already begun sending in the bombs and Obama is sitting around doing nothing, you really are delusional. The responsibility of the President (any President) is to gather all the information, take in the advice from his diplomatic and military personnel, and make an informed decision. Unless you missed it, the statement in response to the violence and deaths that Pres Obama and Sec Clinton did put out were very strong. The violence was, in fact, carried out by SOME Muslims, a subclass of Muslims who are filled with hate and fear for anything and anyone that doesn't fit their view of the world, tiny as that view may be.
The reason this kind of thing continues on after centuries of the human race supposedly "advancing" is because EVERY society has these same subclasses. They are drawn from the dregs of our societies, and unfortunately, they sometimes represent the face of the society at large.
We need to spend more time identifying and isolating these subclasses, and not allow them to speak for anyone other than themselves. Violent Muslims are no different from any other violent people. Their mindset is no different than Terry Jones - Terry Jones simply exudes violence in different ways. But their goals are the same; destroy anyone I hate; use any excuse to use my chosen form of violence.
I see disturbing bits of the same mindsets on these blogs. Deflect, distract, distort or ignore any discussion point from people you have identified as the "other side". Use the most inflammatory language to describe the worst-case scenario and apply it to every situation. I believe many people do it simply for the attention, even though they are basically anonymous when on the blog. Maybe we need to sit down and take a long look at ourselves in the mirror. Is this the kind of person I want to be? What good am I accomplishing here? Will the world be a better place as a result of my verbal violence?
Make no mistake about it - violence takes many forms, but it always comes from the same subclass gene we all seem to possess, regardless of what religion or political party, or ideology we say we represent.

Religion is the root of all evil. In today's age, with sooo much information available, why do we continue to deal with so many religious zealots? Eleven years ago yesterday when the most horrible attack ever occurred on American soil, the Democrats (the party NOT in power) rallied around the President, a Republican and the party in power (the republicans). I was appalled by the Romney campaigns' ill-considered, poorly timed response to this rapidly evolving turn of tragic events. There are still American citizens and friends of ours at risk; last night was not the time to 2nd guess the State Department. The on-the-ground resources in Egypt made a statement consistent with the culture of the country they are in (which is what diplomats are normally expected to do) while in the midst of having their lives threatened in the service of the US. Somehow, that is magically all Obama's problem because this poser, who has recently alienated our friends on a fluff tour with his prepared remarks, doesn't like the wording of the statement made under duress. Unbelievable.

I have read at least 2,000 comments before reading yours. Though you are obviously partisan to the Democratic ticket, your presentation of the tragedy and your attitude as an American are exemplary. Tax - First of all our role in Libya was as air support for NATO, Obama didn't "Free them", & neither did he free Egypt, other than to apply pressure, along with the rest of the international community. Secondly, the millions we send to Egypt comes from an agreement that far predates Obama's time as President. Egypt's money is from a deal cut in the 1970s, & is also tied to the money we send Israel. We basically bought the peace between the two, & the agreement goes back to the mid 70s. We do not provide Libya with financial aid.

Although your comment is incoherent for your information most of the deficit that has occurred between 2009 and now is due to Bush's policies( TARP, tax cuts to everyone incl. lowering the top tax bracket from 39.6 to 36%, lowering capital gains tax, Iraq/Afghanistan wars, medicare part D, financial collapse that resulted in millions being unemployed and to be on the dole an food stamps, unemployment benfits) and basically the stimulus funding of 750B and some healthcare overhaul (130B) can be attributed to Obama.
