Social media analysis: Democrats gain by redefining Ryan

Crimson Hexagon Inc. and NBC News

Social media report on the campaign for Monday, Sept. 10. Click the image for the full-size report.

At their national convention last week, Democrats had significant success redefining Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan as a flip-flopper on the budget and the economy, his marquee issues, according to NBCPolitics.com's computer-assisted analysis of hundreds of thousands of Twitter and Facebook posts.

M. Alex Johnson M. Alex Johnson is a reporter for NBC News. Follow him on Twitter and Facebook.

The analysis indicates that — at least among Americans who are active on social media — the biggest swings in sentiment involved Ryan and President Barack Obama. During the two-week convention period, Obama twice trailed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney by 8 points in a head-to-head comparison, but he had caught up to a dead heat by Monday:

Crimson Hexagon Inc.

Head-to-head voting preference for Barack Obama and Mitt Romney for Aug. 27 through Sept.10.

NBC's Luke Russert and MSNBC's Alex Wagner discuss Rep. Paul Ryan's positions on the budget and defense spending.

NBCPolitics.com analyzed about 1.5 million posts using a tool called ForSight, a data platform developed by Crimson Hexagon Inc., which many research and business organizations have adopted to gauge public opinion in new media. It isn't the same as traditional surveys, which seek to reflect national opinion. Instead, it's a broad, non-predictive snapshot of what's being said by Americans who follow politics and are active on Facebook, Twitter or both at a particular moment in time, and why they're saying it.

Explainer: Can you scientifically quantify social media opinion?

General opinions about Obama, Romney and Vice President Joe Biden remained relatively consistent throughout the analysis period, positive sentiment for all of whom moved no more than 4 points on any given day:

Obama:

Crimson Hexagon Inc.

Positive and negative sentiment for Barack Obama for Aug. 27 through Sept. 10.

Romney:

Crimson Hexagon Inc.

Positive and negative sentiment for Mitt romney for Aug. 27 through Sept. 10.

Biden:

Crimson Hexagon Inc.

Positive and negative sentiment for Joe Biden for Aug. 27 through Sept. 10.

Ryan was a wild card, swinging from a favorability rating near 50 percent around the end of the Republican convention to the mid-30s by the time the Democrats had finished in Charlotte:

Ryan:

Crimson Hexagon Inc.

Positive and negative sentiment for Paul Ryan for Aug. 27 through Sept. 10.

Democrats spent the week of their convention depicting Ryan as a talks-tough-but-votes-weak vacillator on the economy and an opponent of women's rights. By Monday — after the convention and a weekend of punditry — Ryan's votes for the Troubled Asset Relief Program and President George W. Bush's budgets dominated the negative discussion, along with significant criticism of his opposition to abortion:

Crimson Hexagon Inc.

Negative topics of conversation around Paul Ryan for Sept. 4 through Sept. 10.

Ryan and the Republicans can take away one positive: Overall, specific commentary about Ryan continued to dwarf specific discussion about Biden, by a ratio of nearly 4-to-1 during the two-week convention period. Even last Thursday, the day Biden addressed the Democratic convention, Ryan was the topic of 55 percent of commentary that was specifically about either man.

So while people, by and large, may not be saying nice things about him, at least they're talking about Paul Ryan.

Yes. I agree. It must also be pointed out that EVERY state is a battleground state. If we want to stop the obstructionist tea-party saboteurs it is important to vote straight democratic in all races for the House and Senate. When the Kochs and other filthy rich realize that Romney is going to lose, they will throw all their money into trying to buy all the state races.

"In order for the United states to succeed some have to suffer" Sound familiar? Those are Romney's words. "I love to fire those that work for me" I can go on and on but I think everyone has heard him loud and clear. Oh, I'm going salmon fishing in Michigan next week; you know, where "the trees are the right height?"

An even greater threat is the fact that Egypt and Libya are both controlled now by the muslim brotherhood and al-qaeda.

Romney doesn't understand that if you don't send them billions of dollars like Barack Obama does they will attack us and kill Americans.

Thank goodness Obama has the foresight to send them money. Americans can rest easy knowing Obama has paid off the muslim brotherhood.

lynseypug -- That's funny and sad at the same time. It's looking like the Florida voting process could be a repeat of 2000. With eleven amendment proposals, including one which seeks to repeal the ban on public funding for religion (I kid you not), I foresee long lines and voter disenfranchisement.

Obama is constantly redefining his positions, even to the point some would suggest he simply cannot tell the truth. Wait, it isn't lying, Obama is either being taken out of context or just letting his positions evolve. Liberals can always find a way to sugar coat any lie from a Democrat.

And the stupid things he lies about, his voting record is out there for all to see, his adoration of Ann Rand, Russian born atheist writer, I give her books as x-mas gifts, I insist that all my interns read her books, now I reject her beliefs? Really?

alaska.....obama requires all to read the koran and bow to dictators....WHAT is your point??

He & reid have controlled the budget the past 4 years..===$$16 Trillion in debt! I know that a KOOlaid chugger like you can NOT even count the zeros needed on that number. IT is the ECONOMY stupid!! . Look at the great job being done with the MUSLimBros...Blame Bush, anyone but obama..

We are there ONLY because BOZOhussen -the chosen one, and Over-the-HILL'ry want us there!! He promised 4 years ago to have us out, but sent many more troops...why is any American blood being shed for those in-bred tribal murderers..NO more tax $$$ for those who are not With US..Like LBJ did, this is oabamas Vietnam!!

From the book of love..the devil mohamed said..Qur’an (3:118) – “O you who believe! do not take for intimate friends from among others than your own people, they do not fall short of inflicting loss upon you; they love what distresses you; vehement hatred has already appeared from out of their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater still; indeed, We have made the communications clear to you, if you will understand.” This verse not only warns Muslims not to take non-Muslims as friends, but it establishes the deep-seated paranoia that the rest of the world is out to get them.
Qur’an (9:23) – “O ye who believe! Choose not your fathers nor your brethren for friends if they take pleasure in disbelief rather than faith. Whoso of you taketh them for friends, such are wrong-doers” Even family members are not to be taken as friends if they do not accept Islam. (This is the mildest interpretation of this verse from the 9th Sura, which also advocates “slaying the unbeliever wherever ye find them”).

Wake up America..any who believe such hateful ideology s, can never be your friend!!

Social media analysis: Democrats gain by redefining Ryan

I've read reports that Romney was warned that Ryan was constantly playing fast and loose with the truth. Mitt chose to ignore those warnings, which may not serve him very well. He did so at his own peril.

Ryan is becoming more and more blatant about his lies. It's opens his yap and a lie falls out. Then, he turns right around and says he didn't lie, then 30 minutes, tries to walk it back. You can't hardly hear the guy what with all the tap dancing he does.

When you say Obama "waisted" 6 trillion dollars do you mean he ate them and it made him gain weight which increased his girth??

It's the republicon economy that is the problem. In 400 days you republicons have created exactly 0 jobs while blocking Democratic jobs bills that would have created up to 7.4 million jobs.

You republicons are the party over country gang beholden only to Emperor Norquist.

Don't these Democrats realise Romney will fix everything by cutting tax for the rich. For the very rich he will cut it out completely. (capital gains tax) ... this will trickle down to you.

When uber rich people pay NO tax at all they will buy more burgers and fries and make new jobs for people.

Romney has been VERY clear on how he will pay for all of this .. he will close loopholes and do "other stuff" ... all we have to do is wait until after he is elected and he will tell us all how and what loopholes.

I admit .. I am confused about this loophole thingy .. if uber rich people who will pay no tax (capital gains) why do they even need loopholes anymore ... Romney can't mean loopholes middle class people use .. can he?

Well I won't worry .. I heard if we elect Obama again Obama will start eating white babies. I'm voting for Romney.

Your vote counts! Do you want a president who will bring jobs, get the economy going again, reduce the debt, balance the budget and tell you the truth! If you want a president who continues to lie to you, creates massive debt and deficit, divides the people, blames others for his own failures, and has no plan except to make America a welfare country and broke.

You liberals know the answer and if you still want to vote for Obama, we can not help you!! For those who know the real story and are tired of a president who gives great speeches but won't change his direction of making America great but intends to implement his radical policies no matter what! Do the right thing and get rid of Obama and the failed leadership!!

He'd just have to pick a place that wasn't too urban, and certainly not a university city. A small town, not unlike where I live, just shy of the place where the paved roads end. Believe me Rick, all of your brothers are right here. Except for me, but don't worry, I'd still be civil to you. I've learned to co-exist.

To cut down on misleading sound bites and general BS statements that are not backed up with facts and detils, we need a new type of debate format or extra format added to the regular one. New format would pick say two or three major topics to get into details, say economy, taxes, job creation, regulations, energy policy, etc. -

each candidate must lay out their main changes/policies they would push for the whole world to see in televised debate, then walk through exactly why they think they would work, for example - Repubs on jobs/taxes/economy: we think all these tax cuts mainly to the rich will create the jobs we need to get economy strong again and here is how - make them walk through their hoped outcome, like this many billionaires will open up this many factories and create this many jobs in x months after we give them huge tax breaks, the jobs will pay x/hour and the benefits should be med insurance, pension, 401k, etc. ASSUMING all those billionaires don't send their money to build factories in China, etc. We need detailed scenarios / outcomes they foresee their plans should create!!!!! To some extent so we can hold them to it, and find out who are not patriots and who are!!!!!

What's very strange is not one conservative on this or any other vine has addressed this to rebut or criticisms of it or speak out for it. I guess if they don't see it then it doesn't exist. They refuse to speak to just how un-American it is for an elected official, a Congressman no less, to sign a pledge that comes before the pledge he made when he took the oath of office. Obviously we all know where their loyalties lay and it's not with the American people. I think it's strange that they have given this unelected little traitor their loyalty and not the American people. Especially when Norquist's loyalty to this country is suspect.

If you had you would know that everyone of them is about defunding the EPA, Planned Parenthood, gutting "Obama care", closing the Dept. of Education, pushing the XL pipeline that even Republican governors don't want going through their states. Not one of those bills is an honest jobs bill. It's all smoke and mirrors that they know darn well the Senate would never approve. They sent them garbage and you dim wits believe them because you're too lazy to even look at the bills.

Pick one thing that affects this country he lied about adrift2! And do not throw a platitude or innuendoe out like the way your prophet obama always does!

                            @Ill Informed Murphy

OK, here's the first 2 of his top ten:

                            10. “I voted for the Budget Control Act. But the Obama Administration proposed $478 billion in defense cuts. We don’t agree with that, our budget rejected that, and then on top of that is another $500 billion in defense cuts in the sequester.” Truth: Ryan has been doing back flips to explain why he has been criticizing the Democrats for the $600 million “sequestration” cuts that will automatically go into effect if there’s no budget compromise by December. Ryan, in fact, voted for those cuts. The sequestration cuts, along with $487 million in other defense cuts, were both a part of the Budget Control Act. (September 9, 2012)

                            9. “And by the way, under President Clinton, we got welfare reform … which moved people from welfare to work, to get people out of poverty. President Obama is rolling back welfare reform.” Truth: President Obama granted several Republican governors new flexibility for how to implement welfare standards, but did not eliminate the current existing requirements. The claim about the work requirement was universally debunked by fact checkers, and by Bill Clinton. (September 5, 2012)

I can go on if necessary but in the mean time I rest my case.

Murphy, 'Pick one thing that effects the country he lied about adrift2'. ' So, you know he's a liar and you want to discuss his lies. Sorry but once a liar, always a liar. I'd rather have a thief then a liar because you can watch a thief. Let's see now, we have a tax cheat(thief) and a liar. Nice bunch you hang out with. Remember, if you sleep with dogs, you get fleas.

Hey fool, with 2 first names. Researchers say a high percentage of people whom vote republican are uneducated, and you are the poster child of ignorance. Fact checkers all over the USA, are agreeing that the Romney and Ryan ticket are mass blanketing untruths and hoping that they stick. Evidently, they are with you. So no since arguing with a fool. Just keep your head buried in the sand, this coming November, so you don't bust an artery!

Let me ask you a question snarky--do you really believe Mitt Romney would have been allowed to avoid taxes for the last ten years? The IRS would have been all over him like ugly on a gorilla! You do know that he released two years of taxes four years ago don't you? Who is the ape throwing feces to get attention now?

He's starting to sound like Mitt. A little desperate and kind of unstable.
