Mark Warner, D- Va., said, “The other side can’t bring it home without Florida or Virginia. Here is our challenge: Who will be the state that puts Barack Obama over the top?”
The delegates shouted “Florida,” of course.

But from the Panhandle to the Keys, Democrats face the difficult task of helping Obama repeat his 2008 victory in Florida. For starters, Obama’s 2008 Florida margin was narrow -- Obama beat Republican John McCain by 236,000 votes out of a total of 8.4 million total votes cast -- so there’s little room for error or for the apparent complacency that some Democrats feel.
Florida delegate Van Mansker, a retired human resources director for the home improvement firm Lowe’s, who lives in Pensacola, Fla. said he has been working at the Escambia County Democratic headquarters manning the phones and “helping to explain to people why they need to turn out and vote.”

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona won Escambia County with 59 percent of the vote in 2008; four years earlier, George W. Bush won the county with 65 percent. The goal for Democrats in the GOP environment of the Panhandle and Escambia County is to simply reduce the margin of Obama’s loss there.
Another delegate from Pensacola, Samuel Horton, said one factor that makes this year different from 2008 is “there’s so much hatred in our community toward the president. We come from the Panhandle of Florida and there’s a lot of people up there who just hate him, which I just don’t understand.”

He added, “The biggest majority of Democrats are just like everybody else -- they’re just not paying attention.” It’s the job of Democratic activists “to get them motivated, get them to understand that they can’t sit this out – they have to complete the job,” Horton said.
“What’s really different this year is that people have a tendency to think, ‘Well, he’s president, so it’s OK.’ Well, no, you got to do the other half and vote this time -- because if you don’t, he won’t be able to finish his achievements,” the Pensacola Democrats said.
In addition to African-Americans and Latinos, a key demographic in Florida is Jewish voters.

David Harris, the president of the National Jewish Democratic Council, warned the Florida delegation Tuesday that “a ten percent drop in the Jewish vote in Florida is 98,000 votes. (The margin in) Bush versus Gore (in 2000) was less than a thousand votes.”
Republicans, he said, “are trying to scare Jews that he (Obama) is anti-Israel. It’s total crap.”
Sen. Dick Durbin and Gov. Pat Quinn join The Daily Rundown to talk about the 2012 Democratic platform language concerning faith, Jerusalem, and God verse the language used on these topics in years past.
Florida ranks first among the states in the volume of TV ad spending by the Obama and Mitt Romney campaigns as well as by allied outside groups. Altogether they have spent $110 million on TV advertising in Florida, according to NBC News ad-tracking data, with each side having spent about $55 million so far.
Obama will also kick off a two-day Florida bus tour on Sept. 8, bringing his economic message to key voters in Seminole, Kissimmee, Melbourne, and West Palm Beach.

Mentioning the Republicans’ television buys in the state, Harris said, “You in south Florida, you’re going to see this crap on TV all the time. I’m sorry about that. The only way we’re going to fight it is with a grassroots volunteer campaign and with these wonderful people in this room getting the truth out about President Obama. We’ve got to nothing to run from on his position on Israel ... . We don’t want to wake up the day after the election and say ‘the Jewish community fell for this in Florida.’ ”

On Tuesday, seeking to peel off Jewish support from Obama, Republicans pounced on an omission from the Democratic Party party platform, a statement that was in the platform four years ago: that Jerusalem "is and will remain the capital of Israel." On Wednesday, NBC News confirmed that language was to be reinstated.
NJDC's Harris said in a written statement: "Jewish Democrats know full well that Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. We -- like President George W. Bush before and leaders of both parties for decades -- also know that the final status of Jerusalem will have to be formally decided by the parties."
Delegate Jack Wolff, a semi-retired lawyer from Plant City, Fla., said he thinks Obama “is working hard to see that Israel, as our best ally in the Middle East, survives.” He added, “A majority of my Jewish friends are strong followers and advocates of President Obama.”

Wolff said that he and his wife, delegate Beryle Buchman, a retired public school English teacher, are working to register voters “and seeing that they vote by mail if they can, because that way they won’t have any problems at the polls.”
Florida Democratic Party chairman Rod Smith said that a central part of the Florida Democratic strategy this year is to “focus, focus, focus on mail ballots,” since voting by mail avoids any problem with in-person voting, especially for older people who might have transportation trouble in getting to their voting precinct.

Smith started his delegation’s breakfast Tuesday by giving personal testimony to how the Affordable Care Act signed by Obama is affecting people’s lives, telling delegates that his 25-year-old son has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Under the ACA, his son is still covered by his father’s policy.
“I have been shocked and amazed to realize that the richest country in the world cannot survive without universal, affordable, available health care,” he said, “Every Democratic president since Harry Truman has recognized that and every Republican presidential candidate has opposed it.”
And he added, “if there’s one reason we ought to win this election, and there are so many, it ought to be, first and foremost, we need to take the message out there: affordable health care will affect your life ... .Take that message to the neighborhoods and we’ll win this.”

Lets be clear: Latino voters are not one voting bloc. If you ask the different ethnic groups what they consider important you will get different answers. Cubans don't like Mexicans, and Mexicans aren't fond of Guatamaleans. They are as diverse as any other ethnic group, so just saying "Hola!" and eating a taco isn't going to get you votes.

Eric, it is going to depend upon seeing the lies and misconceptions about Obama cleared away, and the truths exposed for Romney and especially Ryan (we all know who is going to run the show).
Florida is not as difficult as they are making it. I hope they are all watching the DNC down there. It is pretty clear who cares, who is inclusive, and who can't throw a party for themselves without screwing it up.

Obama has a 1.57 point lead in both over the last 60 days, but that includes a couple of polls each with extra large number of Democrats used in the Polls. Odds do look like they could fall to Obama in Virginia and to Romney in Florida according to the last 30 days of polls. There is a long way to go yet.

Get the government's hands off my Medicare!
Don't Floridians like Medicare? If so, they are out of their mind voting republican in this election, unless of course they simply vote for their own personal interests and the heck with everybody else and society as a whole.
As far as the "crap" goes, I think the only reason this may even be close is because of the crap the right has been slinging for the past three years. Obstructionism and crap, they must be proud.
Funny, what I always here is that it is the Republicans who are going take away their social security and Medicare.
Where is the Republican legislation that has done that? The only legistlation that cut anything in Medicare was in 2005 and it was limiting payments to doctors and was bi-partisan. It was a Bi-Partisan Effort during the Reagan administration where Social Security taxes and medicare taxes were increased AND the maximum Socials security Retirement age was raised to 67 years.
It was the Democrats who put a tax on Social Security benefits. It was the democrats who wrote and passed the ACA which eliminated the Medicare Bridge Insurance. It was the democrats who limited payments to doctors further. It was Democrats who limited what services and drugs that Medicare would pay for.
The only reason Republicans are talking about reform for these two is because raising taxes alone is not going to work on fixing these programs. They are not talking about cutting services, but they are talking about limiting how much the fed pays for insurance.
Romney/Ryan's plan will bankrupt Medicare by 2016. Everyone, even those currently receiving benefits will be affected. The 55 rule is BS. EVERYONE will be losing Medicare services under Romney. Bankrupt is bankrupt.

It is really hard for me to decide this election. As a 5th generation American, my american roots want me to vote for the best interest of THIS country. However, my Jewish heritage is pushing me to vote for whatever will help Israel, and damn the US to hell. But then, my Irish heritage is pushing me against Romney since he was so nice to the British. I guess I will go for Obama, since I am Irish first, Jewish second, and American last. Yes this is a message for Florida Jews who put the welfare of Israel ahead of the US. Obama is doing alot for Israel, and I am not anti-Semetic, but I do not think a unilateral, pre-emptive war with Ira (fill in consonant here) is the best idea right now. However, if they did make any move against Israel, I would fully support a US lead COALITION against Iran. And hey, since we are finally out of Iraq and almost out of Afhganistan, we may have a few troops to spare....I'm sure our soldiers won't mind...

Sad to say that things are not looking good for Obama here in Florida. Lots of the "good ole boys" have so much hatred for him that they don't want to hear any facts. On a construction job site recently I had a boss that would loudly play Rush Limbaugh on the radio. I had to listen to that crap every day. Believe me, when I'd get home listening to Chris Matthews was like medicine (now that I don't work that job anymore I don't feel the need to listen to Matthews).
I don't think there is much hope for Obama in securing the "good ole boy" vote. The one best hope is that when the wives of the good ole boys cast their secret ballot, they will vote for Obama. Many of those wives secretely hate their husbands anyway.
Cubans are NOT, Hispanic; they are either Spanish or black,(85% Spanish, they are a very conservative group.

The Democrats arguments all have to do with that the Republicans are going to take away all the rights of women and minorities and old people and give your money to the rich. Lets look and the jobs- since 2010 there has been a private sector loss of jobs of 5million which 80% were middle and high paying jobs.
at the sametime there were 4.5 millon jobs created of which 80% were minimal wage and low paying which gives a net loss of 500,000 over all
There is also a loss of about 500,000 public sector jobs due to the poor Obama economics and states and cities going bankrupt as a result. yes excessive wages and compensations by corrupt unions contributed.
Romney is for the rich and damages the middle class is also another busted Obama talking point.
I have vetted the candidates and can say that Romney is the one to get the economy going and get the country back on track.

That's probably true, but it would help if you did not stereotype by implying that all Cubans don't like Mexicans and that all Mexicans do not like Guatemalans. I am sure that is not true. You are probably going to find at least some Cubans who do like some Mexicans and some Mexicans who do like some Guatemalans. It is very rare for everyone of one group to hate everyone of another group.

Obama didn't know what to do when he got the job, and signs indicate he hasn't found out so far. The $716 Billion he 'borrowed' from the Social Security Trust (Medicare) for ObamaCare infrastructure seed money will never be repaid because Obama has not the will to do so.
ObamaCare replacing Medicare will not be a good trade for seniors. ObamaCare is more expensive and provides less healthcare than Medicare.
Also, pensions are being cut or thrown out completely under Obama in a struggle to at least repay some bills. Those pensions are the backbone of hundreds of thousands of retired people's lifestyles.
You obviously haven't even read the plan. Everything you've stated is pure fiction. If you demand honesty from the Republicans, the least you could do is offer some yourself.

Florida has a great incentive to vote for Barack Obama.
The state has a significant number of elderly citizens.
If these seniors want to retain their Medicare, they have to vote for Obama.
Romney and Ryan have made it clear that they will issue Medicare "vouchers."
We all know that Ryan's vouchers will fall far short of the actual insurance premiums.
Seniors that vote for team Romney/Ryan hazardously will be voting against their own interest.

Debt topped 16 trillion during DNC
About the 16T debt....Here's the solution, trust me it will work:
- Stop the SS checks for about 3 months
- Stop paying the medicare/caid providers. Period. Let people pay their way
- Stop the food stamps
- Congress take a 6-month sabatical without pay, and their aides too
- Close all the military bases around the world.
- Discontinue the research and development grants to universities

I have no problem with people who need temporary help getting help temporarily. I have no problem with people who are physically unable to provide for themselves receiving help long-term.

Voters are simply apathetic about four more years of Obama after the massive letdown from the hype and the hope of the last election. As such, Obama is tanking in the latest polls, and his count in the electoral college has slipped considerably. Virginia and Florida are no longer must wins as additional states including Michigan are now in the toss up column.
Much to the chagrin of the Obama campaign and the Democratic Party, this election will be a referendum on the president's job performance. Obama has spent the campaign to date running from his record, unfortunately for Democrats he can't hide from it. History is well on its way to repeating itself, not the 2008 election, but 1980 when Reagan thumped Carter after having trailed in the polls most of the campaign. Obama has enjoyed being president so much, he ignored the fact he was expected to do the job.
In round figures I'm about 45% better off today than I was when Obama took office. That does not include my 401K which has nearly doubled, the value of my house which has gone up about 10% or any new investments I've been able to make over the last 4 years because of Obama's policies.

I think you have described the situation very accurately. Obama has had the world handed to him through out his life and sadly it may have more to due with affirmative action than his own abilities (we will not know until his records that he sealed have been released).
I think he expected the oceans to stop rising and the planet to heal itself as well as everything else to get done just because he was in charge without considering that he actually had to do something. He and Michelle have enjoyed 3+ years of $$$ vacations, the finest living, tons of photo ops with celebrities, and basically being worshiped for what they are rather than who they are inside. 2008 was a historic moment and I had really high hopes but on retrospective they were not really based on anything. I would have preferred Hillary and I think if she had been elected we all would have been far better off.

Now I pay for part B, have already paid for part A Medicare and I purchase supplement insurance to cover the rest. It is all I can afford. Destroying Social Security will unfairly burden Seniors. While I would be okay because of wise investments and some pensions not everyone is so well off. When the only income one has is Social Security how are they to live. On your doorstep? Begging for food as in Edwardian England or in feudal times?

My sister in West Palm Beach works with seniors in FL and reports they are not buying the Obama bull this time and that they have really focused on this medicare issue have it figured out. Being old does not make you stupid. They view Obama ignoring that Medicare is heading toward insolvency as a much bigger threat than vouchers. They also understand that the alleged Obama "savings" comes in the form of a 30% reduction in payments to providers (the doctors and the hospitals). They also understand that many of these providers either can't or won't accept further reductions in payments and that means that even though you might have coverage, that doesn't necessarily mean anyone will see you or treat you. They also understand the Ryan plan does not change anything for someone who is currently 55 or over. Time to come with up with some new lies liberals, the olds folks are'nt buying the current ones.

The 2 large tax cuts didn't create $#it but a big a$$ debt! in a time of war. Too bad our friends on the far right don't like to be confused by the truth! Too damn bad if we have to spend money now to clean up after W's risky tax giveaways and wars, prescription drug benefit (that benefits big pharma far more than seniors) etc.

Don't tell me about the ACA, it is designed to save money and cut waste, fraud, and abuse. Getting 31 million of the over 50 million uninsured to start paying their own freight is not a bad concept. I thought the right wingers were all for paying your own way? Now all of us (me included) will have to buy insurance or pay a small penalty instead of clogging up the local ER and using it as our primary care provider (we use it 100% FREE since we aren't compelled to pay if we can't or just refuse to to save ourselves the money) Here's a couple more facts to consider: 31 million more paying INSURED patients added to the pool of those already covered= lower costs due to far fewer using the ER for free. We do have to work towards a better more cost effective single payer system as soon as time permits, but 'Obamacare' is a huge step in the right direction, 90 plus years coming. BTW in case you repugs didn't know, here's another inconvenient little fact that ought to make your day: Obamacare IS Romneycare, which is a Republican idea going back to at least 1993!

NOW HIRING: Doctors, nurses, x-ray and therapy, receptionists, front office, cleaning and kitchen support staff, janitorial, parking, and probably some short term construction jobs because of building expansion and renovation to meet the needs of over 30 million new customers! All of these are good paying jobs people say they want.
If you like capitalism and new jobs to replace some of the good ones lost during the deep W Bush recession, then you ought to love the ACA and that 'damn socialist' guy who made it happen (a shout out to the Supreme court too that upheld it and made it law, lol!)
