Julian Castro becomes first Hispanic to deliver keynote for Democrats

San Antonio mayor Julian Castro touts the Democratic education platform and President Barack Obama's record while portraying GOP nominee Mitt Romney as a danger to the American Dream. "It's a choice between a country where the middle class pays more so that millionaires can pay less—or a country where everybody pays their fair share," says Castro.

 By Sandra Lilley, NBC Latino

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the first time in the Democratic party’s history, and in a sign of Latinos’ growing significance as a key voting block, San Antonio Texas Mayor Julian Castro was the first Hispanic to deliver the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. Castro, the son of a Latina community activist and an increasingly visible young Latino Democrat, had one overarching message to his speech — America is the land of opportunity, as long as it is a collective priority.

“Of all the fictions we heard last week in Tampa, the one I find most troubling is this: If we all go our own way, our nation will be stronger for it,” said Castro, adding, “because if we sever the threads that connect us, the only people who will go far are those who are already ahead. We all understand that freedom isn’t free — neither is opportunity. We have to invest in it,” said Castro.

The 37-year-old Mayor of San Antonio spoke lovingly of his grandmother, who left Mexico as a little girl, never made it past the fourth grade, worked as a maid, cook and babysitter, and later in life taught herself to read and write in Spanish and English. Castro said only in America would the grandsons of this woman would end up as Mayor (himself) and the other on his way to the U.S. Congress (his twin brother Joaquin). In fact, it was his twin brother Joaquin who introduced Julian, a powerful image of two young Latino politicians who were raised in modest circumstances and are now in the national spotlight.

“The dream of raising a family in a place where hard work is rewarded is not unique to Americans,” said Castro. “The dream is universal, but America makes it possible, and our investment in opportunity makes it a reality — America didn’t become the land of opportunity by accident,” said Castro. Castro then gave a vigorous defense of Obama’s policies, saying Obama saved a million jobs by rescuing the auto industry, made a historic investment in public schools, and expanded college opportunities through Pell grants. Castro also said Obama succeeded where seven other American Presidents had not, in passing health care legislation.

Then Castro praised Obama for taking action on the Dreamers. “And because he knows we don’t have an ounce of talent to waste, the President took action to lift the shadow of deportation from a generation of young, law-abiding immigrants called dreamers.” He then urged Congress to “enshrine into law their right to pursue their dreams in the only place they’ve ever called home: America,” bringing cheers from the crowd.

Castro’s speech then went on offense against the Republican presidential candidate. “Mitt Romney, quite simply, doesn’t get it,” said Castro. Criticizing Romney for telling students to “borrow money from your parents,” and saying to laughter, “Gee, why didn’t I think of that?” Castro said, “I don’t think Governor Romney meant any harm.  I think he is a good guy.  I just don’t think he has any idea how good he’s had it.”

Castro then added, “The Romney-Ryan budget doesn’t just pummel the middle class — it dismantles it.”  He then said Romney says “no” to getting the middle class back to work, respecting women’s rights, “letting people marry whomever they love,” and expanding access to good health care . He also accused him of undergoing an “extreme makeover” on issues.

Castro  then ended his historic keynote speech on a note that touched on his immigrant grandmother’s journey.

“In the end, the American dream is not a sprint or even a marathon, but a relay…My mother fought hard for civil rights so that instead of a mop, I could hold this microphone,” said Castro, urging the re-election of Barack Obama to build on “shared prosperity.”  Castro’s speech was well received on the convention floor, eliciting enthusiasm and cheers of “four more years.”

Opinion: Castro should act like he belongs

After Castro, First Lady Michelle Obama gave a heartfelt speech in defense of her husband.

“After so many struggles and triumphs and moments that have tested my husband in ways I never could have imagined, I have seen firsthand that being president doesn’t change who you are — it reveals who you are,” said the First Lady to rousing applause. “But at the end of the day, all you have to guide you are your values — so when it comes to rebuilding our economy, Barack is thinking about folks like my dad and like his grandmother,” said Michelle Obama, who talked of her father’s struggles with multiple sclerosis, his pride at paying part of her college tuition, and Barack’s childhood as the son of a single mother who spent much time with his grandparents.

And in a pointed remark aimed at Republican comments that Obama has pitted classes against each other, the First Lady said “our families didn’t begrudge anyone else’s success or care that others had much more than they did — in fact, they admired it.”

Michelle Obama then passionately defended her husband’s record, saying he tackled health care reform, signed the Lily Ledbetter act,  and kept student loans from increasing, because for Obama, “these issues aren’t political — they’re personal.”  Saying he reads letters from Americans late into the night, she says, “I see how those stories … that’s what drives Barack Obama every single day.”

The First Lady also said, “If immigrants could leave behind everything they knew for a better life on our shores, then surely we can give everyone in this country a fair chance at the American Dream.”  She then said, “we must once again come together and stand together for the man we can trust to keep moving this great country forward,” her husband, Barack Obama.

Castro’s and Michelle Obama’s speeches definitely roused the convention floor, and Democrats hope the energy and enthusiasm continue in the next two nights of the convention.

ROMNEY:

I saw this over at Forbes' website. Changed my mind in a positive way regarding Mr. Romney - he will have my vote in November:

- Romney graduated with “University Honors” from BYU (also known as “Highest Honors”, their most prestigious from of recognition, somewhat equivalent to valedictorian) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English; he’s not just a numbers guy

- Master’s degree in Business (Harvard, a Baker’s scholar: top 5% of business students)

- Master’s degree in Law (Harvard, graduated Cum Laude / with Honors, top 1/3)

- Earned both master’s degrees (business AND law) at Harvard University simultaneously (Could you do that? I couldn’t.)

- Enormously successful in private business and now worth between $200 and $250 million (compare this to Obama and many of Obama’s closest advisers who have never had to turn a profit or go hungry, and, no, don’t whine about workers Romney let go when taking over a company while at Bain Capital because you’d be forgetting to look at: A) the fact that Bain was INVITED by the companies to have Bain invest in them; there were no “hostile takeovers” by Bain Capital and B) the workers’ jobs Romney saved by saving a dying company and C) the jobs he created after those struggling companies were turned around and started to grow again)

- Gave away his inheritance in 1998 to start / help fund the “George W. Romney Institute of Public Management” at BYU (his father, George Romney, died in 1995)

- As head of the 2002 Winter Olympics (Salt Lake City) turned a potential loss (-$379M shortfall) into one of the few profit-earning Olympic games (+$100M profit)

- Donated his entire Olympics salary and severance package ($1.4M) to charity

- Put aside partisanship prejudices/trash-talk by successfully campaigning/winning the governor’s seat (2003 – 2007) as a Republican in a heavily Democrat-controlled state LONG before Scott Brown

- While governor of Massachusetts, at HIS request, served the people of MA at the salary of $1/year (that’s right, ONE DOLLAR)

- Previous executive leadership experience as a state governor, including Massachusetts’ Commander In Chief of state military forces (Yes, a state governor is legally the Commander In Chief of that state’s National Guard forces unless those troops are called to active-duty by the President)

- Turned Massachusetts’ budget from red to black while governor (- $3.0B to +$2.16B; that’s “billion” with a “B”)

- Cut taxes 19 times as Massachusetts governor (that’s not a typo, NINETEEN)

- As MA governor, developed a plan that would make deadbeats pay for their own health care (you may not like the MA health care law but that’s what it’s sole purpose was. Still don’t like it because of the mandate? Don’t move to MA.) (BTW, how would YOU have solved the MA healthcare free-loader problem and how would you have done it with an overwhelmingly Democrat-controlled state legislature like Romney had to work with?)

- “Service over self”. Romney endorsed McCain only 2 days after ‘Super Tuesday’ in 2008 when it became obvious McCain was the clear front-runner; America is more important to him than his ego

- Volunteer service to community as a church head pastor for 13 years all with ZERO pay (that’s right, none); 5 years as a “bishop” and 8 years as a “stake president”

- Would give ALL his Presidential salary ($1.6 million total) back to the American taxpayers if elected (yes, he’s on record as committing to this)

- Voluntarily turned down enrolling in Medicare when he turned 65 on March 12, 2012
(in other words, he’s NOT sucking up our precious tax dollars because he knows he can, and therefore should, take care of himself)

- He also chose to NOT receive any Social Security payments upon turning 65 because, again, he knows he can take care of himself and therefore should not rely on our tax dollars to help fund his daily living

- Looks, talks and acts “Presidential”

- Understands commitment (never divorced, in a loving 43 year marriage)

- Understands morality (never had an affair)

- Understands family (5 kids, all successful adults)

- Willing to let all of America see his birth certificate without a fight

- Released his most recent filed tax records (2010) proving he’s not a tax cheat (the IRS has no problem with his filed taxes), with more tax records (2011) promised to be released before the election

P.S. – If all one can say about a candidate is that they are a member of “X” church and ignore the talents and character of the person, that person does not deserve the privilege of voting.

Oh my, so much comptuer 'ink' wasted to discibe a DRAFT DODGER of the 1970's and a TAX DODGER on the new millennium.

The only question I have for this 1%'er, is will he extend FDIC insurance on the trillions the 1%'ers have stashed away in the Cayman Islands accounts and will he give 'performace bonuses' to his Jewish thieves-for-friends' at Goldman Sachs, Merril-Lynch, and bankster pals at JP Morgan, Wells Fargo, BofAmerica and Citibank et. al. on Wall Street?

Stay tuned Pilgrims. On November 15th he will be recruiting his 2016 Presidential 'Team Romney' for the (yet), another battle ahead, jajajaja.

Oh yeah,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,well Obama was raised by communists, used drugs and has no history of leadership.

Obama has little or no personal history, no relationships to speak of before about 1982 when he came to America for the very first time. He does not have a single college transcript or scrap of writing to show for decades in universities.

He NEVER had a job, started a business or hired an employee so he was not clouded with capitalist ideas.

When elected to public office, he NEVER created a single law or bit or legislation. He only voted PRESENT, never took sides on issues.

Obama is above leadership, instead of writing a budget or working with congress he has went golfing over 100 times and had nearly 200 FUNDRAISERS IN THE LAST THREE YEARS.

Obama hates the military and would never serve a day protecting our country. He never dodged a draft,,,,,,,,,,nevermind the draft had ended by the time he was 18. He never signed up for Selective Service,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,that is only for US citizens.

Sure you can vote for a man who has success,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but why????? you have Obama.

Michael-1193260, you forgot to point out that in Mitt Romney's only government job, as governor of Massachusetts, he was a failure. He could not run for a second term because he was so unpopular, with an approval rating of only 34%. He fails in his first government job, now wants a promotion??? Note that polls show Romney 16 points behind Obama in Massachusetts, where people know him best.

With a handle like Castro, that dude is a shoe in with the Democraps. Probably related to Fidel and as the world has learned Ojama the Lizard can change shape and color on a whim or speech. Now you folks that don't agree, remember not to call me racist or worse. You have the option to practice your freedom of speech, just as I. Maybe on November 7th, we may compare notes of what went wrong and where? I predict there will be a new sheriff in town and the deck of "cards" in Congress will be totally shuffled with Jokers thrown out and all wild cards deemed null and void...and unemployed. You read it here...remember...the sun don't shine on one dog's ass all the time. With that, go to the bank! Eh, VOTE!

paidmyfee - shouldn't your name be paid troll?

Let's see where to start - President Obama's transcripts - like everyone's mine included - are sealed. He didn't spend DECADES in Universities! If you know anyone who did - they're a professional student!

He has had several jobs as SD was good enough to point out.

He did create legislation when he was a Senator and voted "present" no more than any other senator.

Romney dodged the draft. As you put it President Obama was not old enough for the draft. I know of very few people today who have signed up to serve our country in the military. I salute those who do but will not put anyone down who chooses to serve another way.

President Obama has done more to help the military, their families, and veterans than any other President. His respect and admiration for our men and women who serve is well known. You're a disgrace to claim otherwise.

And, you're a pathetic excuse for an American, spouting your lies and hatred.

Why should we want to read your version of Mitt the Barbers's resume? Your post is largely opinion (never had an affair, how would you know?)

Your most grievous transgression is assuming that business experience translates into national leadership capability. Romney (who was forced to liquidate shares to pay his expensive tuition) has a good education, but you can't teach smarts.

Ten Stars for Julian Castro, with a smile that reminds me of a certain other charismatic Democratic presidential candidate. When Texas becomes a swing state in 2016, count on Julian Castro to provide the swing.

At which point, Florida becomes more-or-less irrelevant.

Marco Rubio, eat your heart out. Your 15 minutes of unearned fame are just about UP.

    Exito --

    - Earned both master’s degrees (business AND law) at Harvard University simultaneously (Could you do that? I couldn’t.)

Really?! People do it all the time. It's especially easy when you don't have to work while you're trying to do it. I'll bet you could do it, too, with that sort of advantage.

I can accept his degrees, and if I did not I would look stupid. Get It?

Perhaps. But Romney's degrees, even if I accept them, do not appear to translate into any real knowledge that qualifies him to be President of the United States. For example, Constitutional law.

Why on earth do people think he is in seclusion? He's not preparing for the debates. Right now, he is not fit to put in front of a camera.

And THAT scares me, no matter what kind of degree he has.

Were do you people get this crap?

There is no such thing as a "sealed transcript". He simply asks for a copy and provides it to the media, if he had one that is. I can get mine from my university with a request form, it is not top secret, like Obama's.

You should serve in the military sometime, I did. Obama has done nothing for the military. Terrorists attacks like Fort Hood and Little Rock are called "work place violence" and ignored. Obama never had the guts to serve,,,,,,,,,,,,,he is a true democrat.

Sitting on a board or committee is not a job. They meet three or four times a year and collect bribe checks,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,spare me the job crap.

Authoring six books? Do you have any proof at all he did anything other than offer his name as "author". My guess is they were 99.99999% ghost written.

In those many, many autobiographies Obama admits to near constant drug and alcohol abuse during most of his high school and college life. He also proves he is a democrat by never admiting to buying either,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,he was a MOOCH.

Go ahead, share with us your respect for "free speech" and the right to disagree. Threaten me with death or some other "typical democrat response" to questioning your messiah and his "honest and open government".

wburnes With a name like Castro? Put down the pipe. Probably Related to Fidel? Really so he must be related. Like all people with the name Smith must also be related? For your information Castro is a very used name amongst many nations. Even Spain in Europe.

The Castro who spoke is from Texas a US citizen. A college graduate from Both Harvard and Stanford. And also comes from a Chicano AKA Mexican American family. A bootstraps family. His Grandmother came from Mexico not Cuba. But in your eyes all the brown people or HIS- PANICS must be related. Your wrong.

Saying a Mexican American is Cuban American is like saying a English American is a Irish American. while we are all American our family lineage and Heritage is all just as important. And equal. Plus this kid shows what hard work and determination can do. He could have just become a statistic. But choose to become a success. Texas should be proud of him.

He went to collage to learn hot to steel and not go to jail for it. You can not change the facts no matter how many times you say something. Romney was a Corporate raider. He stole the money people earned for there retirement. He loaded these company's down with dept. Gave him self huge bonus's, and left them for dead, And who had to make up the retirement money? you guessed it, the Tax payers. So is Mitt a good business man? Hell no, he is a thief and a cheat and he don't pay his fair share of tax on what he has stolen. That my friend does make him a good person and he will never be President. People are getting to know Romney for who he is and they will never elect him. NEVEN

I have to agree, "Castro" made me think of Cuba for just a second LOL!

What's really funny is that if Obama's attempt to be daddy to America was limited to buying everyone a rice cooker as they did in Cuba- If he was smart enough to order them made in the USA, he'd actually have some job growth to show for his time in office versus just the largest addition to the debt in history (and if you factor in Obamacare, that figure skyrockets even more).

At least an "Obamacooker" in every household would give America something to show for the past 4 years. But alas like the Olympic Uniforms, it would be outsourced to China. One of the only things I'll agree with Harry Reid on, they should've been burned and new uniforms sourced, but that's another issue, isn't it...

What's with the "silver spoon" comments? Everything that Michael-1193260 wrote is correct. Quite typical for the left. Can't argue with facts, so attack the person with no basis whatsoever.

Funny the Dems apparently care SO MUCH about Latinos, yet he's the first Latino to ever give a speech at their convention??

Too bad the Republicans beat them to the punch last week with Rubio! But of course according to the left, Republicans don't care about Latinos.

There's a difference between enforcing the laws of the US Constitution and racism Libtards!!!

Actually they beat them to the punch a long time ago, like 1984, when Secretary of the Treasury Katherine Ortega gave the key note speech at the convention for Ronald Reagan. Makes one wonder why it took the DNC so long to catch up.

To Julian Castro mayor of San Antonio and Democratic puppet.

Could you run for re-election in San Antonio supporting gay marriage and pro choice for
abortion in a Catholic and a morally conservative community like SA. They
wanted a hispanic talking head at the DNC and they must have found that yours was
for sale. How's the education system in San Antonio? How are the gas prices and
the HEB monopoly on food prices going in our fair city?

Fellow San Antonio resident asking you to represent the needs of your people and their
values.. not your own political career agenda. Last question? What was the
                price they bought you for?

Just hate seeing my local representative be another guy that has no business talking at
something as big as the DNC but since Obama needs the hispanic vote the
"man/puppet" who represents our city gets to be another paid for
talking head with no credentials to be on that big of a stage. Rather have him
connecting roads like the 1604 loop, improving crime rates, giving the poor
school districts a shot at being fairly represented..etc. and helping improve
the quality of life in the city he represents over his personal interests.. Our
city deserves to be treated like more than a stepping stone.

I give you that back in the 1860's Most Democrats were from the south and slave owners and again... not very progressive in that time. Lets fast forward 150 years and talk about some current events.

                Anti Equal pay for women
                Anti Gay marrage
                Arizona Papers Please
                Stopped the Dream Act
                Anti woman Choice
                Anti Birth control

These are just a few of the recent activities done by Republicans. I know I wont be able to change your mind, and you are very correct about the narrow sightedness of the Democrats in the 1800's. I would of been a Republican back in the day as well. Lets fast forward 150 years which side will be looked back at as being narrow minded and exclusive just like you are doing now?

                      African American Members

There are 44 African American Members (8.1% of the total membership, and a record number) in the 112th Congress; all 44 serve in the House, including two Delegates. This number includes two Members of the House who are of African American and Asian ancestry; these Members are counted in both ethnic categories in this report. Forty-two are Democrats, including two Delegates, and two are Republicans.

Almost every comment so far has been inflammatory and mean. Is this the example of Americans you want portrayed to the world? Name calling, insults, pure drivel.

I come here to read the open honest debate of my fellow Americans, not to read this utter nonsense. A great deal of it from uninformed people. Please educate yourselves on the truth of what government really is and what it really means to you.

The President, any president, is not going to create jobs. It is not his job. It is the private sectors job to maintain our economy. The President, any president, cannot create policy, only Congress can do that, he just signs it. the President is not in charge of spending, he has to have Congress's approval first. The President of the United States is to be respected for the figurehead that he is, a representative to the world for our country, no matter what political affiliation they belong to.

It is Congress's job to create policy, so if you aren't happy with the way things are going, that is where we need to focus our energies. We need to educate ourselves on what our State Congress persons are doing or not doing, what their histories are, do they know what their constituents want or are they driven by the money of their political allies?

This country was built on differing opinions and differing religions. Why are we going backward to where we aren't allowed to have different opinions or religions without bigotry and hatred? Is that really what you want to teach our children? It's not what I teach mine.

The funny thing about the eco-nuts is they're all still driving vehicles. Might as well include all the athiests and abortionists also, they make up a large portion of the democrat party. Why I'll bet the witches and warlocks are also democrats, we know for sure that satan is.

Well I guess you have to go with what you have. After all Castro used MS13 to keep the crime out of the tourist section of San Antonio. It's obvious from the comments on here that the wingnuts are freaking out after those convention speeches last night and all the energy coming out of that arena, a week after that thud in Tampa. They're scared as hell and I'm loving it. :)

So the democrats think that they can drum up votes by parading Hispanics up on stage and speak? Seems like they copied the same idea from the RNC and the Republicans were slammed by doing this. Just like it is okay for Joe "Methadone Brain Dead"Biden to make racial remarks and everything is fine, talk about a two-faced party that has been running this country for the past four years!! But boy if some Republican said anything in that nature in public...Dem Liberals scream that they are a bunch of racist. What a bunch of losers who have their noses up so far in each others ass's!

                                      You just described the Republican/Teabaggers!

However, it is important that the Hispanic demographic is reached on both ends whether Democratic or Republican. There is no denying the growing Hispanic population in this country and having Julian Castro speak does not make the Democrats racist but rather they are just trying to reach out to that demographic. There is nothing wrong in that. I think the DNC did it right to invite someone like Julian Castro to speak because that is the group that Mitt Romney is really struggling to reach out to--Latino Americans. I just wish both sides would stop making this election like a reality T.V. show focusing on the back story of these candidates, whether or not there tax returns have been released, and blah blah blah but instead focus on speaking about what they stand for on the important topics. Plus having Hollywood keynote speakers is much more obnoxious than having a Hispanic Democrat who is actually involved in the U.S. political scene speak.
