CHARLOTTE, N.C. – First lady Michelle Obama said her husband remains anchored by the same values he brought to the White House nearly four years ago, on a night devoted as much to tearing down Republican nominee Mitt Romney, as building up President Barack Obama and his record.

Democrats’ message on Tuesday, the first day of the Democratic National Convention, was two-pronged and crystal clear. The evening’s speeches both sought to extol the president’s accomplishments and cast him as empathetic, while at the same time looking to deconstruct Romney and cast him as an impossibly worse choice for president.

The evening’s top-billed speakers embodied the dual purposes of Tuesday’s programming. Michelle Obama said her husband was the “same man” he was before the White House, in a speech designed to put a softer edge on the president’s case for re-election. And keynote speaker Julian Castro said Romney would diminish opportunities for voters if elected, in a speech that also weaved in the personal story of the San Antonio mayor, whom party leaders regard as a rising star.

"I have seen firsthand that being president doesn’t change who you are – no, it reveals who you are," Michelle Obama said in her prime-time speech. "So in the end, for Barack, these issues aren’t political – they’re personal. Because Barack knows what it means when a family struggles ... Barack knows the American Dream because he's lived it."
And the first lady brought the crowd to their feet in closing: "I know from experience that if I truly want to leave a better world for my daughters, and all our sons and daughters ... then we must work like never before, and we must once again come together and stand together for the man we can trust to keep moving this great country forward…my husband, our president, President Barack Obama."
Mrs. Obama's speech capped hours’ worth of speeches in Charlotte, but stood in contrast against most of the day’s earlier speakers, many of whom offered sharp criticism of Romney. So strong were the attacks on the Republican nominee, that it seemed as though many of the efforts to build up Obama were secondary to disparaging Romney.

A spokeswoman for the GOP presidential nominee, Andrea Saul, said late Tueseday evening in response: "On the first night of President Obama’s convention, not a single speaker uttered the words ‘Americans are better off than they were four years ago.’ Instead, there was a night full of tributes to government as the solution to every problem, even going as far as to say that ‘government is the only thing that we all belong to."
Though much of his speech focused on overcoming the difficulties associated with being a poor Latino in Texas as a child, the middle of Castro’s speech took aim at Romney in a way that was similar to those addresses.
"Republicans tell us that if the most prosperous among us do even better, that somehow the rest of us will too. Folks, we’ve heard that before. First they called it 'trickle-down.' Then they called it 'supply-side.' Now it’s 'Romney-Ryan.' Or is it 'Ryan-Romney'?" Castro said. "Either way, their theory's been tested. It failed. Our economy failed. The middle class paid the price. Your family paid the price. Mitt Romney just doesn’t get it.”
As if to clarify the evening's theme, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said: "We understand that progress is a choice. Job creation is a choice. Whether we move forward or back, this too is a choice. And that is what this election is all about."
Other attacks on Romney sought to exploit Obama’s current advantages over his Republican opponents among women and Latinos, two crucial voting blocs which could sway the outcome of the election.
Texas Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said Romney had “embraced the racial profiling policies of Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and Sheriff Joe Arpaio” by way of praising Arizona’s controversial immigration law as a “model.”
And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who has clashed publicly with the Bain Capital co-founder by contending that there were years in which Romney paid no taxes, excoriated the GOP nominee as opaque and undeserving of trust.
(Reid's charge prompted a response from Romney spokesman Ryan Williams: "Harry Reid has once again shown that he is completely detached from reality. Senator Reid’s comments tonight are absolutely false and are another attempt to distract from President Obama’s abysmal economic record.")

The tone of the first night of the Democratic convention seemed more aggressively negative toward Romney than much of the Republican-led criticism of Obama last week in Tampa. It was an emphasis in keeping with Democrats’ effort to turn the election into a choice – in which they try to make Romney seem like a worse pick than Romney – rather than a referendum on Obama’s record after almost four years in office.
The first day of the Democratic convention was also an exercise in energizing the party’s core constituencies. Among the speakers on Tuesday were the leaders of the AFL-CIO and SEIU, two of the nation’s largest labor groups, the president of the pro-abortion rights group NARAL, and speakers like openly gay Colorado Rep. Jared Polis, who praised Obama’s actions to expand gay rights.
Those strides toward building up Obama were certainly part of the programming on Tuesday night, and the achievements most frequently emphasized included the president’s signature health care overhaul law and the bailout of the auto industry in particular.
“Facts are facts: No president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the Great Depression inherited a worse economy, bigger job losses or deeper problems from his predecessor,” said O’Malley, the first prime-time speaker of the evening. “But President Obama is moving America forward, not back.”
On Wednesday, Democrats will formally name Obama their candidate re-election after a highly-anticipated nominating speech by former President Bill Clinton.
Obama himself will travel to Charlotte on Wednesday, joining Vice President Joe Biden who made it to the convention city this afternoon. Both men will speak outdoors on Thursday at Charlotte’s Bank of America stadium, the home of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and a potentially raucous atmosphere the president’s campaign hopes will recapture the imagery of Obama’s 2008 outdoor acceptance speech in Denver.

This is great, exciting, because it validates my belief that no matter how diligent someone is in trying to be sincere and truthful - they will always be right and wrong. Some thoughts seem to come from the other side of infinity as mine. I found it ever so much easier to see what was right with her address than wrong with it. She tried to include everyone, but I'm sure some never even felt that.

It was a nice prepared speech. I would have expected nothing less since they had all year to prep it. The First Lady is a good public speaker. Her law training showed and she was elegant at times. I do think she went overboard of trying to sway the viewers into believing that she and her husband are just regular people even though they are millionaires. She did seem desperate at the end asking for help for the campaign, even the TV commentators notice it.
I did like her dress and I do give the First Couple credit for being slim and fit.
There was nothing in this speech to get me to vote for her husband. She did misstate about B H Obama being raised by a "single Mother". That is 100% not true. His Mother was divorced from his Father. She was not single after that point. They were an one (1) parent household until she married her next husband.
She did a good job as did Anne Romney.
Many of the posts have no real thought behind them just hatred, many will vote against their real interest because they do not truly understand . Comments like the one directing the FLOTUS to go cash her welfare check is truly hateful and a sign of ignorance. The true racist attitude and nature of this country was revealed when President Obama was elected. Many still do not understand that MLK was not speaking about people of color, but all. Many do not like the First Family because their story is truly real, and like it or not many can relate because of their own struggles.

I watched her speak tonight, Michelle, and while I believe that she and Barrack are passionate about helping others achieve their goals, there is a balance they are missing in their pledge. Where does the money come from to do ALL that they want? We hit 16 Trillion dollars in borrowed money for our Country today. You have to PAY for this stuff! Who pays for it? Well, even if we raise taxes on the wealthy like Obama proposes...it only funds 4-5 days of our economy at this point. So, where does the rest come from? The middle class that they profess to want to grow from the inside OUT! She gave a great speach, but reality and wants are opposing for their beliefs and they ARE failing!
Different than most of you think, I thought Ann Romneys speach was pretty dog-gone good. Romney doesn't HAVE to be some bleeding heart who is going to save the world. HE just has to believe in helping his fellow man at the same time of leading the economy and work towards SAVING the US, which I think he is well qualified to do. His business background allows him to know that there is a balance betweening helping people and providing for ALL. I think he has the experience to do that.

Romney has already proven that with the way he destroyed companies while working for Bain. They want to keep tax cuts already in place for the wealthiest 1% instead of having them pay their fair share and don't tell me most of these good-hearted millionaires are "donating" significant sums to charity because they are buying yachts and hiding money in the Cayman Islands and paying less than 13% in taxes just like Romney. They want to increase taxes on the middle class... the people who are struggling... and they want to cut all social programs for every day AMericans, reduce the education budget (like we don't already have enough ingorant people in this country), and they want to INCREASE military spending and go to war! Their economic policies are no different than George W's and we know how well that worked. Are you so racist and stubborn that you cannot see which one cares more about the everyday American people???? You won't even acknowledge the jobs reports!!! So who is so blind and stubborn that they will cut off their nose to spite their face? Yes, you go ahead and vote for your white rich boy who has NO idea what it is like to be in the middle class. Michelle's speech was incredible. That is what America is all about, not the "Hate and screw your neighbor" rubbish spewed at the RNC.
Ted Stickland had some great lines too - "How can Romney ask to be president of the USA when he doesn't keep his own money here?" and "If Mitt were Santa Clause, he'd fire the reindeer and outsource the elves."

I believe that Michelle is a great person. A fine humanitarian. I would vote for Michelle Robinson. Unfortunately, she is Michelle Obama. The only thing that she has done wrong is marry Obama.
All I heard tonight were the same exact promises that I heard last time I voted for Barack in 2008. Same ol reteric from the key note speakers about the future. This is exactly what Obama and the dems promised last time. While King Bush may have started us down the path of self rightiousness and stupidity, Mr. Obama has done nothing... I repeat NOTHING to right the wrongs nor unite congress and the house. Castro spoke of education and how it has improvedunder Obama's leadership. Eduaction is at an all time LOW in this country. Especially when it comes to facilities and teachers. Privately funded universities and schools are the only institutions doing well. Both of my parents are school teachers. Both have been laid off recently. My dad was fotunate to find another after giving his right arm and left leg to paying for a Master's degree. My mom has not found a teaching job.
Education was just one of many promises made by Obama and the democrats in 2008 an we have not improved one bit. I would say at best, we are stagnant as a country. Going nowhere and achieving nothing under his so called leadership. He should go back to being an attorney ...... or better yet, a used car salesman. He sold me and you on past promises and you guys are still drinking the coolaid from the sales floor cooler........

It's a shame that the Republicans just don't understand (and don't want to).
Both Michelle and Barack are excellent speakers (especially when they have a script to read). However, their actions overpower their words. Frequent vacations all around the world, stimulus packages to big banks and big corporations, back room deals with companies that share their ideology, etc. They supported the Congress pushing through a 1200 page law before anyone had a chance to read it. This is the type of thing they said they were going to change back in 2008, but they are just following the same DC theatrics. Then they are planning more stimulus packages and more of the same stuff that hasn't worked. I can't say Mitt is 100% right, but continuing to do the same thing that has already been shown to fail is irresponsible. Barack needs to take responsibility for his bad economic actions and come up with a plan that actually can work, such as giving tax relief to small businesses and people that start small businesses, giving tax credits for hiring workers, cutting government spending (we all have to do more with less, the government should not be any different), suspending payroll taxes for small businesses, etc. This country will be facing a mass exodus of talented students and graduates that can't find jobs here and are looking overseas for jobs. It will be a sad day for this country when that happens.

There are more than a few issues that have pretty clear definitions. Here are three to start with.
#1. Health Care--Obama passed the Affordable Health Care; Romney is against the entire bill, down to pre-existing condition discrimination/ability to deny coverage (ABC News, June 2012).
#2. Obama agrees with at least one of the items on Simpson-Bowles' list--making some cuts to defense spending (The Romney campaign blasted the president Thursday for looming cuts to defense spending. But they failed to mention — until they were reminded — that the cuts are required by last summer’s congressional deal to cut spending in exchange for increasing the federal debt ceiling [ABC News, July 12 2012]). Romney, on the other hand, vows not to cut the military budget (NBC, August 2012).
#3. Capital Gains Tax-"Romney proposes keeping the current 15 percent capital gains rate for the estimated 2 percent of households making more than $200,000 a year and eliminating investment taxes for everyone else. Obama wants the rate to rise to 23.8 percent as scheduled in 2013...Romney maintains that tax increases would impede economic growth..." (Bloomberg May 2012). Politifact.com rates the statement "Grover Norquist said the economy has grown or been damaged by capital gains tax changes" as "False."
Politifact.com found "a simple study published in the respected nonpartisan journalTax Notes in 2005...[that] found a weak relationship between tax changes and the stock market, but virtually no correlation to overall economic growth, measured by gross domestic product (GDP)." Further, they "consulted a number of tax policy experts who considered the study sound and knew of no evidence to contradict it."
These are some differences. There are many more.

I just re-watched Mrs. obama's speech and was less impressed with it the second time. It seemed that most of the audience wasn't moved till they saw the end of the speech coming. A good number of them weren't clapping at all. I was amazed that she brought up MS. I guess they figured if Romney had a family member with it, they should one as well. Her sobbing at the end was notable an act. You could tell her eyes weren't tearing up at all. Her comments on Jerusalem will make a few jewish voters step back for another look.
Sorry but I just didn't feel it. Good thing she isn't the one running for office.

I was following on the Yahoo blog last night, they didn't say Michelle "knocked it out of the park". They also didn't come up with the NBC tying the political man to the human either despite most of the individual responders being independent and Democrats.
Of course, a convention is really red meat for the party faithful so they should be fired up.
For me, they are not answering unemployment in a meaningful manner, so things like women's reproductive benefits and gay marriage don't mean much right now. And bragging about economic gains that half the normal recovery, and new jobs still far less than the number of people entering the workforce, the economic policies are not the correct direction.

Michelle did a great job in her speech.
She told me about the pride her Dad felt when he managed to contribute a tiny portion of her tuition to go to college. It made him feel like a man.
So Michelle is for everyone having the opportunity to pay at least a small percentage in federal taxes so they can take pride in the government, the nation and feel good about themselves.
I have to say it was a moving story about her MS stricken father using a walker to be a pump operator at the local water/waste water station only to come home and have to painfully climb his way into the arms of his loving children. Why didn't his loving children come down to him? Brats.

I started my own business and I agree with Michele. We need to invest in our future for continued prosperity. The Romney plan of giving more to the rich is simply a giveaway. At worst, it is a bribe for campaign contributions. It will not help our economy prosper. The top 1% already take almost 24% of our national income, up from just 10% in 1980 and the highest level since 1929 when it was also 24%. Coincidence, I think not.
When investment wealth and income is too great as it is now, capital sits idle hurting economic growth. The middle class is buried in a mountain of debt the rich loaned to the middle class instead of sharing more of it with them in the form of higher wages. To give even more to the rich makes absolutely no sense. To raise taxes on them will not affect their investing since higher sales are what drives expansion plans. We can use this increased tax revenue to pay down our debt or fund infrastructure improvements which we sorely need. This will create more jobs.

How many jobs were we losing 4 years ago under a Republican? How many jobs are we GAINING now? This is also with tons of government layoffs due to lack of funding. Imagine if people like Mitt actually paid 35% in taxes like he should instead of 14%. Some of what you are writing is misguided, The President put more money and resources into the VA Hospitals than ever before and to ensure the program was properly run, he put John McCain in charge of the VA improvement project. Also remember the laws you are talking about such as planned parenthood and marriage laws are passed at the state level, that is why in some states it is legal and others it isn't.
As far as bashing Romney for outsourcing, it is true, not a bash but a statement of fact. While the stimulus money went to GM, and they do outsource, the president running GM and it is an American auto company that hires millions of Americans, pays taxes on the 150 Billion in revenue and while there are 8 plants in China, GM has about 156 plants, so 8 is miniscule. But it is jobs we would have if the disparity of wages, benefits, regulation and tax law wasn't so great that we could export to such countries even with the 47% tariff china imposes. The only way for the companies to get in such foreign markets is to build over there where the wages, benefits, regulation, and taxes are the same AND not have to pay the high cost shipping.
What transportation costs do to foreign products is raise the cost enough that we can enjoy the benefits of higher standard of wages, benefits, regulation (safety and evirionment) and taxes. Outsourcing takes place as the buffer permitting the benefit is far exceeded. And outsourcing is easier today because they already have established plant overseas.
One of the worst we can help you lines I see is "punish" companies they "think" have outsourced. Can't happen unless the fed can watch their books electronically like the ACA allows the IRS into your and my bank accounts without a warrant. Then after that you will have added expense of defending yourself from their assumptions rather really true or not.

A housing bubble their social engineering cause was the problem, not what banks do. They won't make loans that the borrower cannot pay, the stockholders will not accept that. But government regulations sure can ge them to make those loans. And now government regulations keep them from making very many.

There is one oddity in the First Lady's speech in regards to health insurance. She stated that he was nighlty pouring over letters about unemployed and people's insurance denying claims. Before the ACA the number one reason for being denied care was the life-time maximum which the ACA eliminated two years ago. Today, the only treatments that can be denied payment for are unnecessary tests, unnecessary procedures, alternate procedures to procedures already approved by insurance and experimental procedures/drugs for treatment to which there is an insurance approved procedure/drug.
An earlier woman speaker proclaimed that Romney would end all abortions. Sorry, but Romney's actual position is abortion okay in cases of life of mother, rape, and incest. That is not all abortions by any stretch of the imagination.

So you wait until you are so sick you will need surgery but you can't have the surgery because you don't have the money to pay the $10000 for the deductible. BANG BANG your dead.

But when we moved back to the U.S., because we had not lived in a U.S. state for our child's senior year, she had to register as a "foreign" student and pay out-of-state tuition in any State in this country. And if she had decided to do an exchange year during her high school years with a family in the U.S. while we were living overseas, she would have been a, are you ready, "foreign exchange student." So once you are BORN as a U.S. citizen, that never changes unless you declare citizenship in another country. So maybe you should educate yourself about how colleges and students are accepted in this country EVEN THOUGH they are U.S. citizens. This is a global world... maybe you should "educate" yourself about such matters before you cast stones.

I have read a lot of comments and I was wondering if people wanted to actually discuss the issues? Maybe start a dialogue? Is it not apparent that there will always be disagreements but that petty name calling isn't changing any situation? As I look at the stock market, I don't just take the numbers for granted. I investigate what is driving them. The world is in a global recession. It isn't just us. I don't think asking someone only paying 13% to pay 3% more is really taking it away do you? Our tax rate is the lowest it's been since income taxes were imposed. Can you really explain why someone who by his own statement paid between 13% and 14% all his life needs a 10% break? You talk about Obama taking away from the rich but have no problem with the rich taking from us. Romneys plan to cut the top rates from 35% to 25% and pay for it by taxing employer health plans. That tax would raise my taxes over 2K a year. But that's ok right?

If Romneys elected you will. Assuming you're middle class Romney proposes cutting the taxes on the rich and eliminating the home mortgage deduction and eliminating the employer health plan exemption that would raise the average middle class tax payers taxes 2-3K a year. Nothing in Obamas plan would raise yours only his.
I'm a business owner. If Romney's elected, I expect my taxes to go DOWN so I can afford to invest in my business and hire more people. Right now, I'm letting them go. My taxes are set to double next year. It's going to be hard to keep the doors open without significantly increasing my prices.

Racist is used to imply that Supremacist are also People of Color,
