Democrats aim to energize core groups with first night of convention speeches

If the Republican National Convention was all about presenting presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's softer side, the Democratic National Convention hopes to shore up key parts of President Barack Obama's voting coalition. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

Updated 7:55 p.m. - CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Democrats set about showcasing their own diversity on the opening evening of their convention Tuesday in Charlotte, a week after Republicans put their rising women and Latino stars on display in Tampa.

First lady Michelle Obama will lead a gathering of voices meant to energize some of President Barack Obama's and the Democratic Party’s core voters and stymie Republican efforts to make inroads with those communities.

Slideshow: Democratic National Convention

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will deliver the keynote address as a prime-time counterpoint to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s speech to the Republican National Convention last week. And other slots will go to speakers meant to motivate young voters, women, and African-Americans to turn out to the polls in November.

Rep. Xavier Becerra talks about the role of Latino voters as well as the enthusiasm gap heading into the DNC.

The Obama campaign downplays the idea of an enthusiasm gap between its supporters and those of Republican nominee Mitt Romney. They also dismiss the notion of waning excitement from their own key constituencies now vs. four years ago. “No, hell no,” a top Obama campaign official said of the notion in previewing the night’s speeches. Polls, though, suggest that one of the enduring challenges for the president will be in making sure core Democratic groups turn out to the polls this fall.

Related: First Thoughts: The enthusiasm gap

Obama leads Romney by 10 points among women and by 35 points among Latinos, according to last August’s NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, the challenge for Democrats involves making sure those voters turn out to the polls.

That challenge is particularly evident in North Carolina, the home to this week’s convention and where Obama won by only 14,000 votes in 2008; a victory due in large part to high turnout from young voters and African Americans.

An advance team checks the stage hours before the start of the Democratic National Convention (DNC), September 4, 2012 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The president has staked much of his re-election effort on making the 2012 race into a "choice," rather than a referendum on his first term.  He often admonishes audiences: “Don't boo – vote!”

Recommended: Over 800 Latino delegates ready to rally for Obama as Democratic convention begins today

But as Republicans push a time-tested attack on incumbents (“Are you better off today than you were four years ago?”) this week, tonight’s speakers will try to reverse any sense of disillusionment or disappointment.

To that end, the GOP trotted out a series of high-profile figures, like Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, and would-be first lady Ann Romney, to make the case against Obama, with an eye toward women and Latinos.

Many of Democrats’ speakers tonight are arranged to make the counterpoint to Republicans’ messaging last week.

NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro are in Charlotte, North Carolina for the Democratic National Convention.  They preview tonight's speeches by First Lady Michelle Obama and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro.

Michelle Obama, who enjoys stellar personal favorability ratings and has become a valuable campaign surrogate for her husband, will cap tonight’s speakers. The first lady’s remarks present a strong opportunity to speak directly to women and African-Americans.

"I am going to be at home and I'm going to be watching it with our girls and I am going to try not to let them see their daddy cry," President Obama said Tuesday in Virginia of his plans for tonight's speech. "Because when Michelle starts talking, I, I start getting all misty."

Michelle Obama, like Vice President Joe Biden later this week, will serve more as a “character witness” to the president than anything else.

Some of the Democrats’ other speakers this week will more directly challenge Romney on issues of importance to specific voting blocs.

Recommended: Some big-name Democrats will be skipping Charlotte

Kal Penn, the actor-turned-White House staffer who was featured in a promotional video for the convention released on Monday, will speak tonight in a play for young voters.

The overtures to women this evening will be even sharper. Lilly Ledbetter, the namesake figure behind a paycheck equality law Obama signed early in his term, will address delegates shortly before prime time tonight. Other women onstage tonight will include House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Florida congresswoman. Viewers early in the evening can also expect a tribute to the women of the House of Representatives.

For the first time, Democrats have included formal support for same-sex marriage rights in its party platform – a plank that's expected to be formally adopted. Chad Griffin of the Human Rights Campaign discusses.

Tuesday evening will also feature members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and other high-profile Latino leaders like Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, among others.

One of the most anticipated speeches will be the keynote from Castro, a figure regarded by Democrats as a rising star in the party who has drawn comparisons with Obama. A top Obama campaign official called Castro the “embodiment of the American dream,” and the campaign expects tonight’s speech to be a highlight of the night.

A number of African-American speakers – from highest-ranking African-American in the House, Rep. James Clyburn, S.C., to a rising Democratic star, California Attorney General Kamala Harris – will speak tonight.

Recommended: Obama courts labor voters in auto industry's footprint

High turnout among black voters in 2008, who were particularly energized to elect the nation’s first black president, helped put Obama over the top in states like Virginia and North Carolina and could help put the president over the top versus Romney in 2012.

Supported Gun Control even though it's Unconstitutional.

The Patriot Act makes Growing your Own food Illegal, makes all Misdemeanors "Acts of terror", makes it Illegal to have more than 7 Days of food in your home and Many other things like that (Maybe 9/11 was a False Flag, they are greedy people, why not do a False Flag, blame it on al-Quaeda and Take Freedom away from the American people so they can have more Control? Considering the Patriot Act takes a Lot of Freedom Away and Bush was Very Corrupt).

Raised the Hell out of the National Debt.

Republicans will Agree with me about the Democrats and the Democrats will Agree with me about the Republicans but they will NEVER Agree with me about what their own Party has done. Both Parties are New World Order SCUM!

It's funny how racists and bigots complain of division, while they are disrespectful to Obama and his voter base from day one.

They are the ones flooding the Internet with racist jokes and disgusting insinuations.

I am glad America is divided between the intelligent people and the hillbilly trash. It's not the first time, nor the last. It makes the crazies real easy to point out.

Our Government has Screwed up the Next Generation of Children and Society, Lets take a look:

1. Approximately 57 percent of all children in the United States are living in homes that are either considered to be either "low income" or impoverished.

2. More than 25 percent of all U.S. children have a chronic health condition that affects their ability to learn. Perhaps we should not be feeding them so much junk food.

3. In 2011, SAT scores for young men were the worst that they had been in 40 years.

4. The average young American will spend 10,000 hours playing video games before the age of 21.

5. One study discovered that 88 percent of all Americans between the ages of 8 and 18 play video games, and that approximately four times as many boys are addicted to video games as girls are.

6. According to a survey conducted by the National Geographic Society, only 37 percent of all Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 can find the nation of Iraq on a map.

7. According to one survey, 50 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 cannot find the state of New York on a blank map.

8. Only 26 percent of Oklahoma high school students know what the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution are called.

9. Only 10 percent of Oklahoma high school students know how many justices sit on the Supreme Court.

10. At this point, 15-year-olds that attend U.S. public schools do not even rank in the top half of all industrialized nations when it comes to math or science literacy.

11. Children in the United States are three times more likely to be prescribed antidepressants than children in Europe are.

12. The United States leads the world in eating disorder deaths.

13. The average American drinks more than 600 sodas every single year. That is by far the most in the world.

14. Back in 1962, only 13 percent of all Americans were obese. Right now, approximately 36 percent of all Americans are obese, and it is being projected that number will rise to 42 percent by 2030.

15. In America today, many families allow the television to raise their children. In fact, the United States is tied with the U.K. for the most hours of television watched per person each week.

16. There are more school shootings in America than anywhere else in the world.

17. The United States has the highest divorce rate on the globe by a wide margin. This is ripping millions of families with children to shreds.

18. Without solid family units, more kids than ever are joining gangs. Today, there are approximately 1.4 million gang members living inside the United States. That number has risen by 40 percent just since 2009.

19. There are more than 3 million reports of child abuse in the United States every single year.

20. If you can believe it, an average of five children die as a result of child abuse in the United States every single day.

21. Sadly, the United States actually has the highest child abuse death rate on the entire globe.

22. Approximately 20 percent of all child sexual abuse victims are under the age of 8.

23. In the United States today, it is estimated that one out of every four girls is sexually abused before they become adults.

24. According to researchers, convicted rapists in the United States report that two-thirds of their victims were under 18, and among those cases 58% said that their victims were 12 years old or younger.

25. The percentage of children living in poverty has risen from 17 percent in 2007 to 22 percent today.

26. Today, one out of every four American children is on food stamps.

27. It is being projected that approximately 50 percent of all U.S. children will be on food stamps at some point in their lives before they reach the age of 18.

28. As I have written about previously, approximately 42 percent of all single mothers in the United States are on food stamps.

29. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, 36.4 percent of all children that live in Philadelphia are living in poverty, 40.1 percent of all children that live in Atlanta are living in poverty, 52.6 percent of all children that live in Cleveland are living in poverty and 53.6 percent of all children that live in Detroit are living in poverty.

30. It is estimated that up to half a million children may currently be homeless in the United States.

31. It is estimated that child homelessness in the United States has risen by 33 percent since 2007.

32. Right now, approximately 25 million American adults are living with their parents.

33. Law enforcement officials estimate that about 600,000 Americans and about 65,000 Canadians are trading dirty child pictures online.

34. The average high school boy spends two hours watching pornography every single week.

35. An astounding 30 percent of all Internet traffic now goes to pornography websites, and the U.S. produces more pornography than any other nation has in the history of the world.

36. In the United States today, 47 percent of all high school students have had sex.

37. One out of every four teen girls in the United States now has an STD.

38. The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate on the entire planet by a wide margin.

39. One survey found that one out of every five teen girls actually wants to be a teen mom.

40. We have borrowed 16 trillion dollars that we expect future generations to repay. We have consigned our children and our grandchildren to a lifetime of debt slavery and they don't even realize it yet. When they do realize what we have done to them they will probably curse us bitterly

Backstabbing: Did you ACTUALLY say "it's funny how racists and bigots complain of division" with the racist, bigoted, and divisive comments you have made? Did you REALLY do that and expect anybody to take you seriously? You put a long list of those that "won't vote for Romney" - then how come Romney is leading (albeit slightly) in national polls? Just keep speaking your racist and bigoted comments - every time someone like you speaks up then another independent decides to vote Republican. None of the qualities that Obama's wife has shown us.... we have not forgotten her 'I've never been so proud of America...' quote, or her 'all this for a damn flag' quote at a Memorial Day celebration last year... and don't forget her extremely expensive vacations on our dime! Which brings up the question why she and her husband take seperate flights to and from these all ready high priced vacations? Can we afford another 4 years of either one of them?

This convention is a celebration of an America transitioning into a Marxist/socialist quagmire. These United States are on the verge of entering the "dark ages" and if we do, it will last a very long time, possibly forever.

It is Obama and his party that has created this mess but has been able to blame it on his predecessor. Just ask yourself, who took control of congress in January 2007, and who was appointed to run the senate and the house? Then ask yourself who was appointed to take over the House Financial Services Committee, and who took over the Senate Banking Committee?

When president Bush warned of Fannie & Freddie being on financially risky ground and needing to be reformed, who was it that fought against him?

The answer, obviously to anyone that took the time to look this up is Obama and his democratic controlled congress, especially Frank and Dodd.

Remember, the financial meltdown came around a year and a half after the democrats took control of congress.

If Obama inherited any disaster, he inherited it from himself.

What they will not do is offer loans to small buisnesses to help people work for a living.

When the POTUS was asked what grade he would give himself, he obviously had a quick look on his report card and saw a big "I" on it. He thought the 'I' was for 'incomplete'. The 'I' was for incompetent'. But, let me grant him 'incomplete' and talk to him a little bit about it'.

I used to teach at Tufts University and every once in a while students would come in and request an 'incomplete'. It was the students that failed to meet their responsibility. It was the students that failed to do what they were required to do in the position they were in. It was the students that did not understand the challenge that they had been given. It was the student's that really couldn't cut it, and do you know what, most of the students that asked for Incompletes you knew that no matter how long you gave them, if you gave them another chance, they still would not be able to do it. And, you know that applies to the POTUS. The POTUS gave himself an incomplete because he did not do the job. He had two years with a Democratic Congress and he diddled around with Obamacare that 60% of Americans say is terrible and then the last two years what has he done? He has gone to 205 fundraisers, he has campaigned incessantly, he's played 15 rounds of golf, and he has failed to meet once in the last 7 months with his Jobs Council.

This is a POTUS that really was right, in a sense, when he said he deserved an incomplete; but, the fact is not only did he not do it and deserves an incomplete, he really doesn't deserve a second term, either."

Wet Willy,

The financial meltdown came when Bush was in office. Bush engineered it, produced it, and presented it to the American public. He was the first one to sign a bank bailout bill and the first one to sign a stimulus bill. How do you change history? Just because you want to blame the Democrats for what the Republicans have done doesn't mean you can alter the past. Bush did this. Every single rational human being in the world knows that Bush did this. He did it when he rejected the Oxley/Barney regulation bill that would have reined in Freddie and Fannie's excesses. He did it when he started two unfunded wars. He did it when he gave out unfunded trillion dollar tax cuts to benefit the rich. He did it when he sponsored the unfunded medicare part D.

The Republicans run up the bills and then blame the Democrats for the deficit. The Republicans love borrow and spend and spend and spend. Then they pretend they actually care about the deficit. "Deficits don't matter." claims Cheney.

How do you rewrite reality? The Republicans created the financial collapse.and they have chosen to prolong it by blocking every piece of legislation that would have made it better. You can lie to yourself, use your hatred to blind yourself, but don't expect any thinking person to buy your bs, because thinking people know the truth, and you aren't telling it.

George Hayduke Sr., Anne Romney showed the world that all the money in the world can't buy class. She is the epitome of the Stepford wife - nothing more.

Michelle Obama did NOT make the comment you attribute to her - it has been debunked over and over but of course you'll continue to post your lie. It's all you have.

Our First Lady represents our country beautifully. She is strong; intelligent; beautiful; classy; elegant; and a wonderful role model for young girls of all races.

A Meeting of Minds

Hello Mr. Republican, how are you today?

Not so well Mr. Democrat, I am worried about the Election and what will happen if Obama is elected for another 4 years.

Well, let us discuss this and see where we go.

Tell me what your man Romney offers the Country as solutions to our Economic and Social problems.

Romney has not set forth a specific platform of ideas to get people employed, and reverse the deficit.

Well it seems your man needs to let us know what specifically can be done if we are to make an informed decision.

Yes but Romney has been a successful businessman in the past. That’s experience right?

Perhaps, but would that not be like a successful Dry Cleaner expecting to walk into Wal-Mart and wanting to be the Chief Executive?

Well he did hire people and keep the business running, making money.

But, doesn’t the complexity of Wal-Mart’s many vendors, customer base, operations around the world make it more necessary that he have had some experience in dealing in these areas. Just having run one store in a specialized operation, how does that even relate to anything that Wal-Mart buys and sells in such vast amounts and with such frequency?

Well, I can see you don’t agree with me on Romney’s experience. Tell me what Obama offers.

He has already shown that he cares about people and their access to affordable healthcare by shepherding the ACA through Congress. He has accomplished many things to help people but could do so much more if Republicans in Congress had not pledged to vote down everything he sponsors.

Mr. Democrat, Romney is a pro-business leader that wants to make taxes even lower for business.

Now Mr. R., you know that when the Average Person gets in financial trouble they have to put more into paying off their bills, which is what President Obama says we must do for a while through higher taxes until we get the deficit and Social Security under control again. It is the responsible thing to do. It is the Income for America by Americans. It is the main way we make money to pay our debt.

Mr. R., a Strong Country manages its debt and protects its people, as well as friends. The World is in massive chaos now, probably the worst global financial meltdown ever. There are many countries at war over Religion, Food, and Nuclear Proliferation. What experience does Romney have in Foreign Affairs and International Law?

Mr. D, he has not been in Government except the one term as a Governor. Now you have made me even more concerned about November.

Mr. R., glad I could help!

Will Biden be there to put his foot in his mouth too .... Obama should get him out from under his desk, give him a tissue to wipe his mouth off and unchain that fool ..!

Why is it 'racist' to hate Obama? Why do you assume that anyone who hates Obama isn't Black? Is it simply because he's black that you all think this? Racism is dying, how else would he have been elected? The only way racism survives is by assuming that all White people are racist, because that is prejudice AND racism. The first to be enslaved were Jews, why don't they complain? Because they don't WANT to remember. I say that you Obama supporters are racist, honestly. No one is willing to look at the facts anymore, only at the party they serve in. Both have redeeming qualities that ensure their survival, you all need to look at the candidates, not their political party. George Washington, our finest and most humble of forefathers, hated the political parties system, because it divided us. He also hate foreign affairs, is what got us into trouble isn't it? I beg you all to think about the future of your children and what you're forcing them to inherit. Is it right to re-elect a man because of the color of his skin? Or because he says he wants to "change" america? Why change something that isn't broken, huh? Mitt Romney may be greedy, but isn't that what America needs in a time of economic crisis? Despite all his bad traits, he has the potential to end these foolish expenditures, and to recall stationed troops in God-knows-where. I beg you to not judge a man by his standings, but instead by his character. Alexander Hamilton, a single Frenchman, built our economy from the ground up. Was he judged by his heritage as a French islander, or by his grasp for financial excellence? Do you want your children to grow up in a place that elects a man merely for being slightly darker in skin pigment than his opponents? A man with little political experience, who wants to cut veterans' rights to vote so he can win a re-election? I beg you all to look past the mudslinging of both parties.

None of these things are rooted in facts or logic. And anyone who refuses to use facts or logic in a debate is not worth debating.

I recommend others do the same. Maybe then we can clean up these comment sections and have real conversations.

I saw an Obama commercial Earlier with Bill Clinton endorsing him. He was saying how Obama was going to raise employment from the ground up.

Is that like the "Shovel Ready" jobs from the first and second jobs bills that failed?

Can we afford 4more years of his jobs bills?

Did Barrack offer any plan to fix the economy in details other than HOPE and CHANGE? NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Obama's detailled plan wherer only empty promises ,that most of them he never accomplish, he offer to close GITMO, he offer to trial terrorist in civil courts, he offer to "provide solution" to help home owners, he promise to lower tuition for colleges and universities, he offer to create more green energy, to many promises but not real plans, he promises to unite the country. He also promise if he don't turn aroun the economy in three years , he will be one term president. So why you democrats demand Romney to do something Obama did not. We cant trust Obama anymore. Obama is a failure.

Why is it 'racist' to hate Obama? Why do you assume that anyone who hates Obama isn't Black? Is it simply because he's black that you all think this?...

Perhaps because others say that the only reason most of us voted for him is because he's black. While I'll admit some voted for him because he's black, some also seem to hate him for the same reason.

But if you read the comments with am open mind you will certainly see many, many racists comments. Just look at the names they call him, 'obammy', etc. They refuse to admit they are racists so they resort to calling him a Muslim, a Kenyan, etc. how else do you explain the comments that have been disproven so often? How else do you explain the comments that are so disrespectful to the President of the United States of America. One would think they would at least have respect for the office if not the man.

And many comments by the 'conservatives' don't even add anything of substance to the discussion.

If one voting aspect is true then so is the other.

underemployedWet Willy, The financial meltdown came when Bush was in office. Bush engineered it, produced it, and presented it to the American public. He was the first one to sign a bank bailout bill and the first one to sign a stimulus bill. How do you change history?

Unlike the Democrats there isn't a Republican alive that doesn't acknowledge that former President Bush spent entirely too much money. That he should have vetoed bills coming out of the Democrat Congress. Nor will Republicans deny he bailed out the Banks or signed the 1st Stimulas Bill which the law written by a Democrat majority congress, & bypartism bill, that provided for tax rebates to low- and middle-income U.S. taxpayers, tax incentives to stimulate business investment, and an increase in the limits imposed on mortgages eligible for purchase by government-sponsored enterprises (e.g., Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac). The total cost of this bill was projected at $152 billion for 2008.

Democrats forget that Bush's bill was $152 Billion vs Obama's $787 billion 2009 Stimulas, again written by a Democrat majority congress. They also seem to forget it was written by a Democrat Congress. Democrats also, unlike the Republicans who blame Bush for excessive spending during his last 4 years, fail to hold their leader responsible for anything to do with these last four years. At four years, he owns this economy, just as president's before him.

No President in our lifetime has taken 4 years to get this country turned around. No President in our lifetime has been re-elected with unemployment over 8%. No President in our lifetime has spent close to what has been spent in these last 4 years even during a World War!

At some point the Democrats need to realize that their leader has neither the maturity nor the experience to handle this crisis. History? History will show that this President was one of the worst in our lifetime. History will show that Carter looked real good in comparison. History will show the American people voted for a sweet talker over experience in a major economic crisis.

And in this election the American people slogan should clearly be:

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

      #1.56 - Wed Sep 5, 2012 8:34 AM EDT

Why do people bash unions? They seem not to get their any many of them around anymore. They also made sure people got good pay. However, now that most are gone, American's get paid less and less. People that vote republicans are the ones that still have jobs. Once they have bubble broken they will realize the difference between Obama and Ronmney.

Romney didn't create sh!t and still wont after in office. If he does try to go to war with Iran they need to make it all kids have to go not a select few.If they do take away the things Ryan actually said he would do. Not the crap version Romney is now making him saw. America will fall hard and fast, all repubs in congress need to be kicked from what they did for the past few years.

I experienced firsthand what he was like as a politician and businessman. He ran on a "jobs creation" platform since MA was 37th in the nation. When he finished as gov, MA was 47th!! Instead, MA had hemorrhaged jobs because they were sent overseas. Education took a big hit, too. Even his supporters were unhappy with him. The one good he did was start Romneycare, which he completely denies doing and calls Obama a socialist for doing what he did 6 yrs ago...what a hypocrite! The Healthcare reform program we have from Obama is IDENTICAL to what Romney gave MA. And it's working...most people are happy with it. Why isn't the mainstream media giving people the facts?

Obama wins this election by 12% - 15% and will destroy Romney in electorial votes especially with the courts rejecting Republican attempts to disenfranchise likely Democratic voters with voter ID requirements.

Don't tell anybody....but those tax cuts were for and benefited everybody........you need to think about something......if the landlord pays higher tax he will raise the rent. If the business owner pays higher taxes he will raise the price you pay for goods and services he provides. All good for the middle class huh. How do you like those high gas prices and unemployment courtesy of Obama?

PLUS, don't super poor people realize that under the bush tax cuts 50% of the people don't pay ANY taxes? Why would you want something different! haha

She's going to tell us that since the Dems took over congress in 2006 we've:

                  1) Seen more people go on welfare & food stamps than ever before
                  2) 23 million people are unemployed
                  3) watched us get a credit rating decline for the first time in history
                  4) watched gas prices skyrocket
                  5) tripled our debt

                  Wait....maybe not.

Well Mitt has at least three ways to boost the
                  economy:

                  1. Start paying his fair share of taxes [back
                  dated also].
                  2. Invest his ill gotten gains in the US instead of the
                  Caymans.
                  3. Stop his friends at Bain and the like sending US jobs
                  abroad.

Let's see now - the National Debt goes over $16 Trillion at the start of the Democratic Convention (it was only $9.6 Trillion when Obama was nominated in2008), and a few hours after the end of the Convention, the new August jobs report comes out.

Those are not very pleasant 'Bookends' for the Democrats - Obama had better hope the jobs report is a good one.

Paladin: In response to your comments:

                  1. More people are on welfare and using food stamps because Republicans refuse to create all those jobs they promised in 2010.....what happened to that?

                  2. See No. 1 above, and the Republicans want to cut even MORE jobs if they are elected.

                  3. The Credit rating didn't decline because of President Obama....it declined because of the lack of compromise in our Congress....I guess you didn't read that, did you? Standards & Poore CLEARLY stated it was because of the lack of harmony in Congress.....President Obama had nothing to do with that.

                  4. Again, President Obama has NOTHING to do with gas prices....thank the speculators in the commodities markets for that since they are the ones that manipulate gas prices. I can't believe people are still so stupid as to think that our president has ANYTHING to do with gas prices. The only thing he can do is to release gas from our surplus if things get really rough.....prices are NOT something he can do anything about.

                  5. President Obama has not tripled our debt....In fact, in a recent article, David Lazarus writes "According to FactCheck.org, the national debt rose 190% under former President Reagan. It rose 52% under President George H. W. Bush; 37% under Bill Clinton, and 86% under Bush II. During his first 3 years in office, President Obama has presided over only a 45% increase inthe national debt." He continues, "As these numbers make clear, Republicans are just as fond of government spending as Democrats." President Obama's measly 45% seems quite a long way from "tripling the national debt."

So, all in all, you've just pulled a "Ryan".....5 misconceptions (lies) that Republicans keep telling that aren't true and can be proven as wrong. Keep it up, you're doing well......

45% of 9 trillion is a bit more than 190% more of 1 trillion. So Obama did add more to the national debt. Can't take percentages if the raw numbers are larger. DUH!

I have better things to do now, but I can't let you slide Doc Holliday. You are obviously too young to know that by the mid 60's there were no more Klan rallys in the South. Only made-up ones, you know, like your make believe friends. And you must have been watching on MSNBC if you only saw white people. Or did you watch at all?

Yes, Obama did add to the debt. But $2.6 Trillion came from Bush. Bush put two unfunded wars, he Medicare Advantage program 'off the books' by using continuing resolutions. One of the first things the President did was to add those to the books, hence the huge increase.

The 2010 Budget proposed by President Barack Obama projects significant debt increases. A $220 billion increase from the already significant budget shortfall inherited at $1.2 trillion in 2009 from the GW Bush Administration.[12][13] The high level of debt and continuing large trade deficits have raised concerns regarding inflation and the value of the dollar relative to other currencies, as well as its place as the primary reserve currency. The Economist wrote in May 2009: "Having spent a fortune bailing out their banks, Western governments will have to pay a price in terms of higher taxes to meet the interest on that debt. In the case of countries (like Britain and America) that have trade as well as budget deficits, those higher taxes will be needed to meet the claims of foreign creditors. Given the political implications of such austerity, the temptation will be to default by stealth, by letting their currencies depreciate. Investors are increasingly alive to this danger..."[14]
                    [edit]

                    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_United_States_federal_budget

Also remember we were entering a recession. During times of economic distress the government is the only entity that CAN spend money. President Bush issued TARP, and President Obama issued QE1 and 2 as well some other things tonhelpmthe economy. Without those things we would be in a far worse place. The main issue is that had Bush not run up the debt prior to the economic collapse with the wars, tax reductions, erc the country would have been in a better situtation to handle the collapse.

I'm a bit tired of hearing about '$16 trilion in debt' from people who obviously have NO IDEA what caused it, who caused it and why it is now necessary.

Selective amnesia or just plain dumb, must be one or the other.

Hmmm, I don't see a debt clock at the DNC convention. Maybe they are not worried that the debt just a few minutes ago hit $16 Trillion dollars, which is $16,000 BILLION dollars! which is $16,000,000 MILLION dollars.

                    16 MILLION MILLION Dollars!

Democrats and Republicans are both to blame for this but Republicans seem to be the only ones worried about it.

                    Why no debt clock?

                    Todd,

Maybe they should have a "Republican Campaign Speech Lies Counter.' Plenty to count there, no?

...and where was the Republican debt clock when Bush/Cheney financed TWO WARS OFF THE BUDGET?

Sorry, but on this issue you live in a glass house, buddy.

Ummm, Mesorandom, you appear to confused. You are right that 16,000,000 + 16,000,000 is 32,000,000. Correct! Thats 32 Million dollars. You get a gold star for that.

Just where do I add 16,000,000 and 16,000,000 in my post???? lol

It appears that the system of numbering we use is a bit over your head. Good thing you never attempted the Calculus or Differential Equations.

Just to try to simplify it for you:

16 Trillion dollars is the same thing as $16,000 Billion dollars or 16 Thousand Billion dollars.

It also is the same as $16,000,000 Million dollars

and that is 16 Million Million dollars.

                    I hope you learned something.

Umm, Jefferson, It appears that you cannot read. I clearly stated that the debt was the fault of BOTH parties.

My point is that the Republicans now seem to be aware of how serious the problem is. They did have a debt clock. My question is why do the Democrats not have one? Maybe they don't think it is a serious problem.

If a person asks, "Do you like the new fall TV shows?" You don't answer,"Its going to rain today."

                    Try to stay on subject.

I loved how the idiot Republicans put "WE BUILT IT!" directly under the debt clock. How ironic, seeing as the debt run up was started by Reagan. The top three Presidents that ran up the debt were Republicans, with Bush logging an astounding 42% average yearly increase, and the lowest three Presidents are all Democratic, with Obama one of them.

If you love debt, vote Wrongme/Lyin'

I repeat, I was clear in my post that BOTH parties are at fault! Did you miss that part?

My question is, pay attention now, since the Republicans now at least appear to be concerned with the debt by having a debt clock and talking about the debt, why is there no debt clock at the DNC convention? Are they less concerned about it?

I don't think a lot of Americans care they just want some their slice of the free pie. The national debt is now over $16 trillion. I would like to hear how this will be handled (stop the spending already). Both parties need to end the spending frenzy with our money.

Republicans neede to pay attention to the debt clock since they are the ones that ran it up. All of Obama's contribution is simply trying to get out of the mess created by Bush. The last democratic president actually turned in a balanced budget and began to run it down. With another term, Obama will have a chance to do the same.

A Comprehensive List Of Obama's Worst Executive Orders JUNE 15, 2012 BY LAURIE ROTH

There have been over 900 Executive Orders put forth from Obama, and he is not even through his first term yet. He is creating a martial law 'Disney Land' of control covering everything imaginable. Some of the executive orders he has signed recently have been exposed thanks to 'Friends of Conservative Action Alerts.' They have compiled a choice list of 'Emergency Powers, Martial law executive orders': Get your headache medication out while you still can without a prescription.

                          * Executive Order 10990 allows the Government to take over all modes of transportation and control of highways and seaports.

                          * Executive Order 10995 allows the government to seize and control the communication media.

                          * Executive Order 10997 allows the government to take over all electrical power, gas, petroleum, fuels, and minerals.

                          * Executive Order 11000 allows the government to mobilize civilians into work brigades under government supervision.

                          * Executive Order 11001 allows the government to take over all health education and welfare functions.

                          * Executive Order 11002 designates the Postmaster General to operate a national registration of all persons.

                          * Executive Order 11003 allows the government to take over all airports and aircraft, including commercial aircraft.

                          * Executive Order 11004 allows the Housing and Finance Authority to relocate and establish new locations for populations.

                          * Executive Order 11005 allows the government to take over railroads, inland waterways, and public storage facilities.

                          * Executive Order 11049 assigns emergency preparedness function to federal departments and agencies, consolidating 21 operative Executive Orders issues over a fifteen-year period.

                          * Executive Order 11051 specifies the responsibility of the Office of Emergency Planning and gives authorization to put all Executive Orders into effect in times of increased international tensions and economic or financial crisis.

                          * Executive Order 11310 grants authority to the Department of Justice to enforce the plans set out in Executive Orders, to institute Industrial support, to establish judicial and legislative liaison, to control all aliens, to operate penal and correctional institutions, and to advise and assist the President.

                          * Executive Order 11921 allows the Federal Emergency Preparedness Agency to develop plans to establish control over the mechanisms of production and distribution of energy sources, wages, salaries, credit, and the flow of money in U.S. financial institutions in any undefined national emergency. It also provides that when the president declares a state of emergency, Congress cannot review the action for six months.

It is more than clear that Obama is planning for the total control and takeover of America via Martial Law. Food, energy, transportation, work, banking, and health, he has it covered. While Obama is busy pulling executive orders out of the sky to control everything inside our country, he has been issuing executive orders to force us to submit to international regulations instead of our Constitution. Sher Zieve exposed this in one of her recent articles. Damn the U.S. Constitution, damn the American people and damn U.S. sovereignty.

He gave the crumb bums what they wanted as bread, then caused the circuses to be watched (fighting amongest ourselves) and you got the Orders signed before anyone knew what was going on. And we need this dirtbag to be in Washington for another 4 years? Hell, there won't be a Washington or US. They will be given away. It happened in Rome and take my word, it Will happen here.

Please get your facts straight. To begin with, the very first executive order 10990 you list was signed by John F Kennedy on Feb 2, 1962 as an order to help reduce accidents and prepare safety orders for government employees. The remainders, while you stretch the actual meaning of the executive orders were signed prior to Obama as Jock59801 said to help set up FEMA.

I suggest everyone stop listening to fools like jclkb who like to spread lies as fact and go to factcheck.org so you can get a little truth in a world full of lies and the uninformed.

                          Hey Jockitch,

Barry, mentions his mentor Frank Marshall Davis by name two dozen times in his book. A dyed in the wool communist.

I'm sure Obama was mistaken, he thought this guy was a good democrat maybe?

Rev. Wright was Obama's mentor and married him and Michelle. He preached for the black KKK, hates America and despises whites. Obama spent more than two decades in his church.

Prolly slept thru most of the bad stuff, right?

Reading may not be your stong suit.

Frank Marshall Davis was a card carrying member of the communist party and a guiding figure in Barry's life, according to Barry himself.

But you go ahead,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,keep reading and try to color it pretty.

Karl Rove at this swiftboating best - as usual the Republicans sink lower into the gutter because they, like you, have no integrity and are totally desperate!

Everybody with any intellectual curiosity at all was intereseted in learning about Marxism when young. I see that as a healthy thing. But Obama's books also go on to say why he rejected it. Or did D'Souza forget to mention that part?

If you walked into a car dealer and they promised a few items and then you drove home and found out that none of the items were there, it really wouldn't matter how much you liked the salesperson. I want to see some of the FDR similarities statements again(hint)...

All you have to do is watch obama's speeches from 2008 and you will see what he and michelle will say. They have no new ideas and is just repeating 2008 talking points

Obama has kept 38% of his campaign promises according to Politifact. If you believe that all campaign promises have ever been kept, I'd advise everyone to stay a safe distance from you.

                          Top 10 Kept Promises

                          1. End the use of torture

Obama said he would stop the torture of terror suspects, and human rights experts say he did.

                          2. Seek verifiable reductions in nuclear stockpiles

In 2010, the Senate ratified a new START treaty for the United States and Russia to verify reductions in nuclear weapons.

                          3. Create new financial regulations

Obama signed a massive overhaul of financial regulations in 2010. It included a new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to look out for the little guy.

                          4. Sign a "universal" health care bill

Republicans may hate the individual mandate, but it allows Obama to make a credible case that the health care law will lead to universal coverage.

                          5. Extend the Bush tax cuts for lower incomes

A rare compromise with Republicans at the end of 2010 left in place current tax rates for middle-class Americans. What happens when they expire in 2013 is the great unknown.

                          6. Fully fund the Veterans Administration

It doesn’t get much attention, but Obama kept his promises on veterans, sending more money and resources to programs that serve them.

                          7. Direct military leaders to end war in Iraq

Obama did as he said, bringing the Iraq war to its conclusion. A Promise Kept for a huge campaign issue.

                          8. Repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy

The policy that stopped gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military ended in 2011.

                          9. Raise fuel economy standards

Obama won increases for the required miles-per-gallon in cars, reducing oil consumption and carbon emissions.

                          10. We will kill bin Laden

On the campaign trail, Obama said the United States would go after Osama bin Laden if it got the chance. When U.S. forces found the terrorist in Pakistan, they took him out.

LOL. General Motors is alive and well; bin Laden is dead. Over and out. I'm tuning into the convention! (I bet that sets their hair on fire!) But I'm doing it!

wait - I honestly misread this the first time. these are a list of the promises KEPT? Calling all of these "promises kept" is iffy at best, I'd say.

                          Obama's 10 biggest lies

During his last State of the Union speech, Barack Obama
claimed “American oil production is the highest that it’s been in eight
                          years.”

In fact, the Congressional Research Service reports
that 96% of the increase comes from oil fields out of Obama’s control.
By contrast, the production from federally-owned oil fields he does
control has dropped by 275,000 barrels a day. It is worth noting that
privately-owned fields have increased by 395,000 barrels a day.

Obama has told the world there has never been a better friend of Israel in the White House.

On Sunday, an Israeli newspaper reported that senior Obama
Administration officials have told Tehran that Barack Obama does not
intend to join Israel in any attack on Iran’s nuclear installations. In
May 2011, Obama asked G8 member nations to fund the Arab Spring counties who are clearly on their way to planning an all-out attack on Israel.

In May 2011, Obama said the fence between America and Mexico was “basically complete”; yet the Department of Homeland Security admits just 36.3 miles or 5% of the border is fenced.

Obama lied and said abortions would not be publicly funded under Obamacare.

Despite Obama’s empty lies about no public funding for abortions, a
March 2012 edict from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
unequivocally ruled Obamacare will use our tax dollars to fund abortion.

In April 2009, Obama claimed he “saved or created over 150,000 jobs.”

In an odd burst of veracity, his friends at the AP called him on this
lie, pointing out that at that point since Obama came to office, the
United States lost more than 1.2 million jobs as per his own Bureau of
Labor Statistics. The report continued by pointing out that any jobs
“saved or created” by Obama’s stimulus bill were “dwarfed by the number of recent job losses.”

He claimed that by the end of his first term, he would cut the deficit in half.

The truth is that he has given us more new debt than all previous presidents combined.

Remember Obama telling us there would be no earmarks in his 2009 stimulus package? He lied. The bill had over 9,000 earmarks in it, and of course, it failed to deliver even a small improvement for our economy.

Obama told us that without his 2009 stimulus package unemployment would grow to 8.5%. We got the stimulus, and it gave us 44 straight months of unemployment at or above 8%.

Obama lied about his position on Gay “marriage” multiple times, moving from “I am not one to support gay marriage” to his “evolution” in May. That was all a convenient pack of lies.

Why this incessant need to criticize Jimmy Carter? Lest you forget, Nixon was a criminal and Ford his pardoner.

This country needed relief from Nixon's lies, and Carter served that purpose rather well. Say what you will about Jimmy's policies, some good and some bad, he told the truth.

You do know the Republicans sent Bill Casey head of the CIA to Iran with the promise of arms if they held the Hostages until after Reagan was elected

I turned him and said - Of course I knew that - plus I also know Casey was involved in the Iran-Contra Affair - unfortunately he died before he could tertify

do you think minorities don't vote for republicans because republicans are racists? Or do you think minorities are being racist by predominantly voting democratic? It's an interesting topic.

I was wondering when Romney was going to talk about Iraq & Bain in his speech? At least we heard Ann's sad story about their “struggles,” struggles so severe they had to, god forbid, sell shares of stock to simply survive? Poor Romney's. I crieded.

Nancy - Don't you find it is odd that President Obama is rich when he has never held a real job in his life, and he came from a family of modest means.

Do you think the President will be praising Tony Rezko for all his help?

Nobody here is denying that Obama is rich. The BIG diference between him and Romney is, Obama Is willing to pay his FAIR SHARE of taxes AND expects others with large amounts of wealth to do the same....

Randy; I'll make you a deal. Let's say we repeal ALL the Bush tax cuts. How much would that bring in? I'd be willing to bet it would not make up for 5% of what Obama is spending. So go ahead, repeal the tax cuts. Where are you going to get the other 95% of the money you DON'T HAVE that Obama is spending!!

It is rather silly to blame all debt accrued during an administration on the president. Not only does a President not create debt (Congress does), but most of the current deficit is due to policies continuing from the Bush administration, as well as the recession that started under Bush.

LOL So the POTUS does not sign any spending bills? He is just forced to sign away. He does not have this thing that all presidents have called a veto?

Plus BHO had overwhelming majorities in the House and the Senate for his 1st 2 years. And the past 2 years have yielded the House back to the GOP, but the GOP has proposed budgets that the Democratic Senate will not vote yea or nae.

So I will give you that the Congress is broken, but that does not mean that the POTUS is suppose to rubber stamp all the spending it has done Jock.

mesorandom - can you tell me how Obama tried to fix the debt problem that Bush created by starting two wars and not paying for them? Because it looks like we're actually in ADDITIONAL wars now, and are in even worse shape.

In all honesty - is there a reason you think that republicans "create" problems and democrats "fix" problems, if you look at wars/paying for them/paying for ANYTHING between the last two presidents?

Seeing that a President just can't "push a button" and go to war without a majority of Congress approval, I suppose NO DEMOCRATS voted to go to war.

p.Mack - you can tell by the posts, the far right is desperate. They know they are running nothing and really have nothing to sell to anyone who isn't a low information voter. They offer no hope of helping the country - they just spread their hatred.

It's sad really but they have no one to blame but themselves. They've allowed their party to be taken over by extremists and they go right along with it!

The day cannot come soon enough when Newsvine removes that pesky button with the exclamation mark on it at the bottom right. I've hear that is what they are going to do, but not soon enough for me.
