Subscribe to RSSTAMPA, Fla. -- As Republicans prepared to welcome their presidential nominee to Thursday’s final session of the GOP convention in Tampa, Mitt Romney's friends and allies took on the job of persuading Americans that he's a man more worthy of their trust and their vote than President Barack Obama.

A stream of character witnesses came before the delegates to testify that Romney was a man of compassion and integrity who’d devoted much of his life to helping others, both as a business executive and as a Mormon leader.
Mormon Pam Finlayson recalled how Romney cared for her family when her daughter Kate was born prematurely, suffered a severe brain hemorrhage, and was close to death.
When Romney came to visit Finlayson and her daughter in the hospital, “I could tell immediately that he didn't just see a tangle of plastic and tubes and wires; he saw our beautiful little girl, and he was clearly overcome with compassion for her.”
Although her daughter survived, she became gravely ill at age 26 and died. “In the midst of making the final decision to run for president ... when they heard of Kate's passing, both Mitt and Ann paused, to personally reach out to extend us sympathy, and express their love.”
She said, “It seems to me when it comes to loving our neighbor, we can talk about it, or we can live it. The Romneys live it every single day.”

Mormon Grant Bennett, who served as an assistant pastor under Romney said, “Mitt prayed with and counseled church members seeking spiritual direction, single mothers raising children, couples with marital problems, youth with addictions, immigrants separated from their families, and individuals whose heat had been shut off.”
He said, “Mitt did what he challenged us to do. He led by example.”
Bob White, one of Romney’s partners at Bain Capital, said “Our investors included pension funds, colleges and charities with noble missions. We would invest wisely and treat their money as carefully as our own.”
He added, “And when things went wrong, we would not blame others. Finally, he took decisive action. Mitt never hesitated. He made the tough decisions, coalesced the team, and moved forward.”
The testimonials to Romney’s character were delivered against a backdrop of polling data that show a likeability gap between Romney and Obama.
U.S. Olympians, including Kim Rhode, Mike Eruzione and Derek Parra, address the RNC Thursday, in Tampa, Fla.
In the most recent NBC News/ Wall Street Journal poll, 58 percent of respondents said Obama was the more “easygoing and likable” candidate, while only 23 percent said the same of Romney. Fifty two percent saw Obama as caring more about average people, while only 30 percent saw Romney in that light.
Emphasis on Florida
But the testimony Thursday night to Romney’s admirable qualities will be in vain if he doesn't win Florida’s 29 electoral votes.
Under most electoral vote scenarios, Florida is a must-win state for Romney. So it wasn’t surprising that Thursday’s featured speakers included Floridians: Sen. Marco Rubio, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Rep. Connie Mack, who is the GOP Senate candidate.

Rubio, who introduced Romney, said Obama was promoting big government ideas. "Ideas that people come to America to get away from" and "threaten to make America more like the rest of the world, instead of helping the world become more like America," Rubio said.
Earlier, Jeb Bush delivered a short tribute to his brother, former president George W. Bush. “He kept us safe,” he said, drawing huge cheers from the delegates.
Then addressing Obama, Bush said, “Mr. President, it is time to stop blaming your predecessor for your failed economic policies. You were dealt a tough hand but your policies have not worked. In the fourth year of your presidency, a real leader would accept responsibility for his actions and you haven’t done it.”
Bush then devoted much of his speech to public education reform, giving parents the choice of which schools they children should attend.
“I know it’s hard to take on the unions. They fund campaigns. They’re well-organized,” he said , and on Election Day, union members show up. “Meanwhile, the kids aren’t old enough to vote. But you and I know who deserves a choice. Gov. Romney knows it, too.”

I picked you out because of your bigotry. Would you say the same thing about Mr. Obama if someone standing up for him were black? Would you say they had a vested interest in making him look good? I hope not. I hope that when people stood up for Mr. Obama you cheered and thought better of him for their claims. So why the anti-Mormon bigotry? Either the claims are true, or they are false. There are many dozens of similar claims too, which are either true, or they are false.
No, what you don't want is exactly what I do want. I want the MSM to go out and find these stories on their own. They aren't all private, not by a long shot, but Mr. Romney doesn't like to talk about them for some reason. Whether it is being humble, or perhaps he just doesn't want to expose innocent people to the kind of rank bigotry you present, I do not know. The Obama administration allowed millions of dollars in federal stimulus funds to go to foreign companies, despite recent statements by President Barack Obama that he opposes “shipping jobs overseas."
“I want to stop giving tax breaks to companies that ship jobs and factories overseas,” Obama said. “As long as I’m president, I will keep fighting to make sure jobs are located here in the United States of America,” said Obama.
However, Obama’s 2009 economic stimulus spending law--the $787 billion American Recovery and Reivnestment Act--gave millions of federal dollars to foreign companies or funded domestic companies that built factories in foreign countries or bought foreign products.
For example, there is the North Carolina LED manufacturer Cree Inc. Cree was awarded $39 million through a stimulus-funded tax credit program in January 2010. However, half of the company’s employees are in China and the company opened a manufacturing plant in Huizhou City, China in November 2009.
Swodoba also said he would continue expanding into China, adding that Cree would keep creating jobs there because it could take advantage of both China’s human resources and its “state-of-the-art technology.”
Another example of stimulus outsourcing is Japanese wind energy firm Eurus Energy, whose U.S. subsidiary, Eurus Energy America, received $91 million in stimulus funds. Eurus Energy America, the U.S. subsidiary of a Japanese firm, received $91 million in stimulus money for its Bull Creek wind farm in Texas. The farm consists of 180 Mitsubishi turbines,” the American University report said.
Eurus told American University that the wind farm was actually built by British firm RES Americas and is now being run by EnXco, an American subsidiary of the French energy firm EDF Energies Nouvelles.
That loan went to California energy firm Sempra Energy for a solar power array in Arizona. However, according to a Feb. 4, 2011 New York Times report, Sempra Energy bought its solar panels from the Chinese firm Suntech.
The project, known as Mesquite Solar 1, reportedly used 800,000 of the Chinese solar panels.
Perhaps the best-known example of Obama administration funding of foreign companies is its $500-million loan guarantee to Finnish automaker Fisker Automotive. That loan, part of the Energy Department’s electric vehicle lending program, was made to help Fisker establish a U.S. manufacturing presence.
However, the company never established an American factory, choosing instead to shutter its U.S. operations and continue building cars in Finland.

Consider what Romney has promised. By 2016, he says federal spending will be below 20 percent of GDP, and at least 4 percent of that will be defense spending. At that point, he will cap federal spending at 20 percent of GDP, meaning it can never rise above that level.
All that’s hard enough. Romney will have to cut federal spending by between $6 and $7 trillion over the next decade to hit those targets. As my colleague Suzy Khimm has detailed, those budget promises already require cuts far in excess of what even Paul Ryan’s budget proposes.
But Ryan’s budget includes more than $700 billion in Medicare cuts over the next decade, Romney’s budget won’t. And Romney promises that there will be no other changes to Social Security or Medicare for those over 55, which means neither program can be cut for the next 10 years. But once you add up Medicare, Social Security and defense and you’ve got more than half of the federal budget. So Romney is going to make the largest spending cuts in history while protecting or increasing spending on more than half of the budget.
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities indulged this idea back in May. If Social Security and Medicare are spared from cuts, then to get federal spending under 20 percent of GDP while holding defense spending at 4 percent of GDP, “all other programs — including Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, education, environmental protection, transportation, and SSI — would have to be cut by an average of 40 percent in 2016 and 57 percent in 2022.”

We have mentioned before (here and here) about how Eric Cantor has said he will block relief funds without offsetting cuts. He threatened to do it with funds for relief in Joplin, MO after their devastating F5 tornado, and again with Hurricane Irene. Apparently, the outcry about his positions did nothing to change the Republican mindset, and last night they voted to block a FEMA funding bill, never allowing it to come to a vote. Via Raw Story:
So – flooding victims aren’t getting the funds, and the people of Joplin are being victimized again, not by an act of God but an act of Senate Republicans. Keep in mind that this wasn’t a vote to deny the funds. It was a vote to deny the funding ever being considered. Maybe they thought that if it didn’t come up for a full vote, they could sweep it under the rug. I have a hunch those folks who have lost homes, businesses – even family members – won’t be so eager to see this swept away without full consideration.
Disaster relief is one of the things that government is best suited for. But as the constant drone from the right tells us, we should have no government. That somehow, these people should be able to fend for themselves when these disasters happen. As Ron Paul said in the CNN/Tea Party Express debate, that’s freedom.
In this case, it’s the freedom to lose everything you own and care about, and not get any help in recovering. I hope the folks in these hard-hit areas remember who pulled the rug out from under them when the 2012 elections roll around.

I am ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that had Obama been in office in Bush's term, 9/11 definitely wouldn't have happened nor would have any of the other things, because Obama's protective force-field is super-effective against the terrorists entering the country. Thank God for Obama, he could have prevented it all. I wasn't alive then, so I can't attest to the types of people these men were, but if they are anything like what the books written about them say, they most definitely would understand how easily words can be manipulated to fit the agenda of whomever chooses to preach those words.
Besides my sincere belief that organized religions and their followers rarely practice what they preach, the point I was really making is that those 2 biased "friends" really only represent a narrow self interest in furthering the legitimacy of their religion, so of course they would say anything that makes Mitt look likable. However, I don't recall Obama needing friends to vouch for how likable he is, as he is more than capable of sincerely displaying that all by himself. I also don't recall him parading the NAACP around campaign events to say nice things about him. He was a minority elected by the majority of a very diverse country, and that is the type of man Obama is. Real, sincere, and intelligent. When Romney can display even one of those characteristics, maybe he won't need his wife and such a narrow minded group of "friends" acting as character witnesses. The leader of this country better at least be capable of that if he is going to hide everything else about himself from the American public.

Protecting BP does not serve the American people, and it will not bring the truth to the millions of people along the Gulf Coast who are entitled to answers. Moreover, it is an insult to the families of the eleven men who were killed the night the Deepwater Horizon exploded. The bigger question is, how can Americans let them get away with it?

I liked the Staples CEO and Bain CEO bragging on Mitt with Staples. What they didn't tell you, they created a Walmart way. They brag how many employees they hired. They didn't mention how many Mom and Pop stores. small business had to close their store in each town that Staples moved into. They didn't mention these employees of Staples have McDonald wages. 51% lower than average salaries for all jobs posted. It's around $8.00 to $10.00 an hour. Making maybe $16-20,000 a year. Your understanding of the retail business is as limited as your understanding of the economy. Retail is not solely about "selling goods and services at a lower cost than anyone else." That is called a low-price business model, and its one that Wal-mart has very successfully employed, but it is not the only retail business model. Ever been to a store that sells Gucci, Prada, or Louis Vuitton products...definitely not competing in the lowest cost market or employing the low price business model. Not only are there completely different rules for high end products, but there's something to be said for quality goods (like freshness of products like produce and meat, milk, etc., or whether or not something is made to last, etc.) and quality of service. Some people will seek out (myself often included) places with better quality and/or service, which is often tied to better pay. If I have to eat out less often or buy less goods because of this, that’s fine with me as long as I can have a better experience or more help when I need it. Interestingly enough, better service is also often tied with better quality—better-tasting food, longer-lasting items (often more bang for the buck), etc. Some people even seek out specific items for altruistic reasons, as a primary or secondary goal (organic items don’t pollute as much, or American-made to support the U.S., etc.). So everything is not so straightforward.
Also, an important issue here is what each candidate’s politics are regarding policies that help shape retail—what each believes about environmental concerns (toxins in consumer goods, for example [like lead]), labeling (telling what country foods are from, for example), etc.

Actually, I prefer to purchase items that need a good warranty at local stores instead of ordering cheaper items over the internet. That includes appliances, computers, televisions, etc. I almost always purchase the extended warranty available from companies like Best Buy, etc.
The religion of the man elected is personal. Mr. President Obama said in his book that if all else failed, he would return to the Muslim religion. Romney is Mormon. Big deal. What we need is someone that will improve the economy and help everyone from the veterans, senior citizens (like me), the unemployed, the disabled and the under-employed.

Right...the man has shown himself to have been a spectacular example of the American success story. Succeeded at everything he has done...in huge ways. He earned his wealth and can enjoy it any possible way he can.

The old couple at the convention last night who had the young son who died from cancer...that relationship began in 1979...that means Romney was a 30-something multi-millionaire who found the time to offer himself and his help to those who needed it. There are countless stories out there about people Mr. Romney has helped in his life...and very few are aware of this because he did not do selfless things for public consumption. He did them because they were the right things to do.
On Wednesday night at one point, the crowd stood up and gave Mr. Romney a tremendous standing ovation. I noticed that those around him urged him to stand up and acknowledge the huge round of applause and he waved them off...I make my living reading people...only an extremely humble man would react like that. Could any thinking person believe that President Obama would react that way to a thundering standing ovation ??? Would not happen in a thousand years.
It is disturbing that a man of such talent and compassion is written about by no-nothings like he is an animal feeding off the carion.

To answer your question, yes he did work out very well for this country. I believe he left us a $2 trillion surplus in the bank upon leaving office. How well did the last republican president do in that category? Oh hard to say I guess, like Mitt, we still don't know how much we paid for republican taxes, we're still adding it up.
Keep in mind that Clinton was fading fast in his first term and wouldn't have won until he embraced the GOP ideas of a balanced budget, welfare reform and NAFTA. He reduced deficit spending by $600 billion but he during his term he still added to the National Debt by $1-1/2 trillion dollars. Clinton had an average of nearly 68% debt per Gross Domestic Product. It dropped to around 64% once the GOP took over Congress and remained at that average through the Bush administration until the Democrats took control of Congress in 07' and skyrocketed to 75% in 2008. Interestingly, it has continued to propel out of control since there has been no balanced budget during this administration.

Look at the record, the 2010 GOP majority in the House passed a balance budget, Obama dismissed it and Reid never allowed for it to come to the floor, The GOP majority passed several job bills but were dismissed by Obama and was never allowed on the floor for debate in the Senate. This same procedure has been going on and on for two years and the Dems DARE call the GOP the party of "no"?
On the flip side, while Obama had a majority of Dems in the House and Senate, the GOP was completely shut out of the Health Care decisions. That doesn't sound like a group extending a hand across the isle does it?
It is significant that the Dems have NOT submitted a budget since taking over Congress in 2007. It is required by law that the Senate submits a budget. Why has this been ignored? The GOP did their job but there seems to be no willingness on the Dems part to have their proposals in writing. I guess it's easier to point fingers and make shameful campaign commercials pointing to what the "GOP wants to do to grandma" then actually do their job and write something down, submit it, debate it on the floor and send it to committee to hammer out an agreement between the GOP House version and the Senate version. The Dems are being cowards and just want to be re-elected. Leaders make decisions, politicians avoid, so which of the two do you want to lead this country?

Mormons happen to believe in GOD and Jesus. They do not worship any other god. I am sorry Yankee, you are uncomfortable, but you got to beyond religion and look at the person. I always assumed the lack of compasson in the policies Romney supports was due to the fact that he was so REMOVED from the circumstances of the poor and working class that he DID NOT understand what it was like to need a helping hand, since he was born and spent his whole life connected and without struggle. the Ryan budget, which he supports, for example, CUTS FOOD STAMPS immediately, during a recession. Cuts head start which is one program PROVEN to work, to level the playing field for kids born underprivleged..UNLIKE ROmney and Ryan.
Keeping it most simple, lets NOT cut FOOD STAMPS right now. It is feeding people who are hungry RIGHT NOW.
I did not see his Mormon coreligionists speak, but I did read about it. IT's effect on me right now is not to warm to him but in hearing that he counselled single mothers and those struggling financially, makes me feel that he DOES know and does NOT care how his policies would impact such people. As I was watching the RNC last night, flipping between CNN, PBS, and Fox News all the while with my laptop open and reading the political stories on MSNBC and Yahoo along with the comments I thought about the 08' election and how I stood in a voting booth and did not vote for either Presidential candidate. I felt that I couldn't vote for Obama because he was then and is now a proven liar. I felt that I couldn't vote for McCain because he proved to me that he was incompetent. I think now about Obama vs. Romney. Obama has continued to prove that he is a liar. He said that he would balance the budget and lower the deficit. We have not had a budget in what.....3 years? When Obama took office the deficit was around 10 trillion dollars and now it is 16 trillion dollars. Even my son knows that is really bad and he is in kindergarten. Obama did say one true thing in his campaign 4 years ago. He said that if he couldn't turn the economy around in 3 years that he didn't deserve a second term. The economy is as bad or worse today than it was when he took office. Now on to Romney. Romney is a politician so he will tell a lot of lies on the campaign trail as well. He is not, however, incompetent. He is an American success story. Nobody amasses the kind of wealth he has without their parents support. Romney's parents started out as middle class and ended up wealthy but not insanely rich. Romney was given every advantage his parent's could bestow upon him. He was given a good home and a great education. He had the business and social contacts. He used them to start a business and amassed great wealth. He used the system in America to his advantage. He is at least competent. I don't believe that Romney is running for President because he wants to get even richer. He has more money than he can spend in 5 lifetimes. I think that he really believes that it is his duty to serve the country that has helped him achieve such great success. That is why I will vote for him this November. Not because I believe everything he says but because I have seen what he has done. He did a great job as a governor. He gave 16% of his income to charity. For those who call him a tax dodger I say this....any of you making that claim would have done exactly as he did if you were in the same situation. He didn't break the law. If he had the IRS would have gone after him in a heartbeat. If he had then Obama and the rest of the Democrats would have crucified him. Remember that Obama is wealthy too. Romney made his money in the private sector, Obama in the public sector. For those of you claiming that Romney made his money by gutting companies I say this...most businesses started in this country fail just like Obama has failed as a President. Only an insane person would think that Obama will do any better if given another 4 years. Time to give Romney a chance.

There are numerous reasons why he has not succeeded thus far, the main one being that he talks out of both sides of his face. He says whatever it takes to get elected. Obama stated that it would take time to fix this mess but no one seems to remember that part. And no, I am not still blaming Bush either. This was a catastrophic financial crisis that has affected the entire world, no just our country. It saddens me that you think that someone who can successfully run a business can automatically successfully run a country. Do you know what it takes to run a business?
You put all of the businesses needs before your employees. If there is financial trouble, the employee suffers whether it be a reduction of pay, benefits, or altogether losing your job. You want to know why the job rate isn't improving as fast as it should? Because your greedy business owners decided that the business can make much more money hiring workers who will accept less pay, work longer shifts, and take on more work. Many companies have learned to operate with as few employees as necessary. As a consultant, I am brought in frequently to companies to see where they can cut costs. Employees are always first on their chopping block.
The world has changed and that has made this unlike any recession we have ever known. People are much more cold hearted and self serving than they used to be, especially business owners. But this is how you want your country to be ran? You are comparing apples to oranges my dear. A businessman has not place in running a country. It is far from the same thing. But sadly, we in this country have decided that the wealthy must know best, even thought there are countless examples to show otherwise.
