That is not correct. The USA has had several balance federal budgets in the past 100 years. The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (EGTRRA) & Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 (JGTRRA) were tax bracket downward adjustments for all levels of income. The highest bracket ended up paying MORE in tax dollars than before the adjustments. Why? They had more money in the pockets to spend and/or invest.

Perhaps you meant the National Debt? If so, those are two (2) different items.

Seriously? That graph was drawn up in like a minute. Government "stimulus" checks that nobody gets, welfare programs, etc. I got two hundred dollars income tax refund. You know how I got that? I worked and earned an income to refund.

I thought, it was worth repeating. Lots of crap on this blog from the likes of tea baggers & conservative republicans -wow its amazing how you can look these facts up on the net, but don't!

Those of you on the right seem to be forgetting a simple factor regarding the so called "16 Trillion" in national debt(which is a common thing these days). So let me remind you just a little. You can say what you want but in the end when you decide to do a little research, you will see in the end who the really behind America's debt.

2001 - Congress passes Bush Tax cuts for 2 years(not paid for)

2001 - War in Afghanistan to find those responsible for 9/11(not paid for)

2003 - Congress passes Bush Tax cuts for 7 years(Bush tried to make permanent but laws prevented it from happening)

2003 - War with Iraq(not paid for)

2004 - both wars intentionally left off budget by Bush. Deficit starts to rise. When media questions VP, Cheney calmly states "Deficits don't matter!"

2007 - Deficits reaches 11+trillion. Companies start moving jobs overseas, housing bubble on the verge of collapse. Oil prices skyrocket and banks looks to Government for help. President Bush sends the majority of Americans starting in March a "loan" check based on household income(would be paid back when taxes are done) in an attempt to jump start the economy. Works for 1 quarter.

2008 - Banks in real trouble. housing bubble collapses. President Bush panders Congress for Bailout of banks with no strings. Congress applies conditions to bill for banks prior to bailout money being issued. Bush calmly disappears to the Olympics while debt sits at 12+trillion and rising.

2009 - President Obama proposes Stimulus bill to get unemployment under control and create jobs. (not paid for) Unemployment stops at roughly 8.5. Not many jobs created but first sign of job creation in 8 months(give or take).

2010 - Obama submits legislation for AHCA(aka Obamacare). Most important parts implemented immediately with the rest in increments. Plan is expensive initially but CBO states bill pays for itself in 7 years.(In other words, it pays for itself, just takes 7 years to happen)

2011 - Obama tangles with republicans in Congress to increase debt limit. Republicans attempt to add bush tax cuts(now just tax cuts to be fair) extension in with bill. Obama and Boehner agree to an "ultimate bargain" designed to cut the deficit by 4 trillion dollars(for every dollar of revenue, 4 dollars in cuts) with deep cuts across the board. Boehner unable to get tea party members to sign off on deal and Boehner "lies" and states there was never an agreement. Congress agrees to pass measure AND tax cut extension WITHOUT paying for it. Issue later causes S&P to lower credit rating for US.

2011 - Obama introduces Jobs bill. Designed to put America back to work by improving infastructure, creating jobs for Teachers, Firefighters, policemen, etc...Bill pays for itself. Congress shelves bills, argues it raises taxes on "job creators" (aka 1%). Occupy Wall street is born.

2012 - Obama submits Budget with deep cuts across the board and tax cuts targeted toward middle class. (First balance budget from President or ANYONE in congress period in three years). Senate puts it to a procedural vote. Receives 20 initial votes, Once Reid realizes bill won't pass, he encourages everyone to change "yea" votes to "nay" thus no votes in order to preserve bill.

Debt stands at roughly 16 Trillion. 4.2 million private sector jobs created in past 29 months. Dow over 13000 in part due to regulations imposed to keep Wall Street honest. 20 Million Americans still without jobs and unable to find work.

Bottom line. CONGRESS is ultimately responsible for the debt. When we can all sit down and LOOK at the events that got us to where we are, I'm sure this will be the conclusion. To say the President is ultimately responsible for the debt is to prove that you have no clue how our government is designed to work. Stop listening to talking points, look at the facts and events that lead up to now, and maybe, just MAYBE, if you have a clear mind, you will see where the blame should be placed and why we need to do everything necessary to vote all those that work tirelessly to obstruct progress out of office.

Do some homework and come back with an educated answer to understand that its not just about bailouts...there are more serious economic repercussions by inaction. Here's a hint, think about to whom the supporting parts suppliers also provide parts and what would happen if the parts suppliers shut down if a global company like GM went belly up....

That was just a part of his income. People like Romney work kind of like the Sony corporation. Sony has 65billion profit dollars sitting offshore that it doesn't bring into the United States to avoid paying their taxes on it. Romney does the same thing. They like so many other huge companies that profit off the jobs they sent overseas, are waiting for the GOP to take the three houses again and change the tax laws so they can bring their profits home tax free and if the GOP do things right, instead of paying taxes on their ill gained profits, they will then be able to write them off and receive incentives and other deductions so not only do they not pay taxes, but they will then do like GE did and receive billions back from the middle class on their returns.

Republican National Convention: A celebration of reaction

The Republican National Convention opened Tuesday in Tampa, Florida and quickly concluded its main business, endorsing an ultra-right political platform and rubber-stamping the nomination of Mitt Romney as the Republican presidential candidate.

The rest of the three-day event, shortened by one day because of Hurricane Isaac, is devoted to interminable speeches by Republican Party officials and office-holders extolling Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan and vilifying the Democratic incumbent Barack Obama, despite the fact that the two big business parties are in basic agreement on all of the most important political issues.

To a considerable extent, the Republicans have been forced to move further and further to the right, adopting positions that lead to bizarre episodes like the Todd Akin affair, because the Democratic Party has itself adopted openly right-wing positions on social policy (the abolition of welfare, cuts in Medicare and Medicaid), democratic rights (extra-judicial assassinations, domestic spying, the gutting of due process and habeas corpus) and imperialist war (the "surge" in Afghanistan, war against Libya, war for regime-change in Syria, preparations for war against Iran).

The general tenor of the Republican convention was set by the keynote speech delivered Tuesday night. The hard-line right-wing message found an appropriate human repository in the thuggish persona of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. His theme was that politicians had to choose between being respected and being loved.

Politicians of both parties, he declared, "have decided it is more important to be popular, to do what is easy and say 'yes,' rather than to say 'no' when 'no' is what's required." Now, he argued, at this Republican convention, "we choose respect over love."

According to Christie, it is necessary to say "no" to the expectations and needs of the American people—to slash the jobs, wages and benefits of public employees; eliminate teacher tenure and gut public education; and cut spending on entitlement programs for the poor, the sick and the elderly.

The New Jersey governor claimed that the people of his state "stepped up and shared in the sacrifice," although not a penny was extracted from the super-rich or big business. The entire burden of budget cuts and deficit reduction—$132 billion in a single state, by Christie's boasting account—was imposed on the backs of working people.

He claimed that his policies were popular in the state, although opinion polls consistently show majority opposition to his drastic deficit reduction measures and growing hostility to Christie personally. Only the collaboration of the Democratic Party, which still controls the state legislature, and the treachery and cowardice of the public employee unions has enabled the Republican governor to sustain his chosen posture as the bully of New Jersey politics.

An incoming Republican administration in Washington would carry out similar measures, Christie declared. "We believe in telling our seniors the truth about our overburdened entitlements," he said. The truth, in fact, is that the so-called crisis in Social Security and Medicare is the product not of inexorable demographic trends, but the insatiable profit drive of Wall Street. Finance capital looks upon these social programs, the last remnant of the era of social reform in America, as a source for more bailouts and more raids on the public treasury to prop up the banks and the financial oligarchy.

2003 - Congress passes Bush Tax cuts for 7 years(Bush tried to make permanent but laws prevented it from happening)

2004 - both wars intentionally left off budget by Bush. Deficit starts to rise. When media questions VP, Cheney calmly states "Deficits don't matter!"

2007 - Deficits reaches 11+trillion. Companies start moving jobs overseas, housing bubble on the verge of collapse. Oil prices skyrocket and banks looks to Government for help. President Bush sends the majority of Americans starting in March a "loan" check based on household income(would be paid back when taxes are done) in an attempt to jump start the economy. Works for 1 quarter.

2008 - Banks in real trouble. housing bubble collapses. President Bush panders Congress for Bailout of banks with no strings. Congress applies conditions to bill for banks prior to bailout money being issued. Bush calmly disappears to the Olympics while debt sits at 12+trillion and rising.

2009 - President Obama proposes Stimulus bill to get unemployment under control and create jobs. (not paid for) Unemployment stops at roughly 8.5. Not many jobs created but first sign of job creation in 8 months(give or take).

2010 - Obama submits legislation for AHCA(aka Obamacare). Most important parts implemented immediately with the rest in increments. Plan is expensive initially but CBO states bill pays for itself in 7 years.(In other words, it pays for itself, just takes 7 years to happen)

2011 - Obama tangles with republicans in Congress to increase debt limit. Republicans attempt to add bush tax cuts(now just tax cuts to be fair) extension in with bill. Obama and Boehner agree to an "ultimate bargain" designed to cut the deficit by 4 trillion dollars(for every dollar of revenue, 4 dollars in cuts) with deep cuts across the board. Boehner unable to get tea party members to sign off on deal and Boehner "lies" and states there was never an agreement. Congress agrees to pass measure AND tax cut extension WITHOUT paying for it. Issue later causes S&P to lower credit rating for US.

2011 - Obama introduces Jobs bill. Designed to put America back to work by improving infastructure, creating jobs for Teachers, Firefighters, policemen, etc...Bill pays for itself. Congress shelves bills, argues it raises taxes on "job creators" (aka 1%). Occupy Wall street is born.

2012 - Obama submits Budget with deep cuts across the board and tax cuts targeted toward middle class. (First balance budget from President or ANYONE in congress period in three years). Senate puts it to a procedural vote. Receives 20 initial votes, Once Reid realizes bill won't pass, he encourages everyone to change "yea" votes to "nay" thus no votes in order to preserve bill.

Debt stands at roughly 16 Trillion. 4.2 million private sector jobs created in past 29 months. Dow over 13000 in part due to regulations imposed to keep Wall Street honest. 20 Million Americans still without jobs and unable to find work.

Bottom line. CONGRESS is ultimately responsible for the debt. When we can all sit down and LOOK at the events that got us to where we are, I'm sure this will be the conclusion. To say the President is ultimately responsible for the debt is to prove that you have no clue how our government is designed to work. Stop listening to talking points, look at the facts and events that lead up to now, and maybe, just MAYBE, if you have a clear mind, you will see where the blame should be placed and why we need to do everything necessary to vote all those that work tirelessly to obstruct progress out of office.

There are so many "polls", statistics and percentages, I don't know where to turn! There are so many "experts" on this forum, I don't know who to believe.

He gave them 50 BILLION dollars to "stimulate" their business. They still closed their plants in the US, but now have 8 plants in China, using Chinese workers (with NO union). They secured a large contract with the Chinese government to build trucks. Their quarterly report showed the largest profits of all automobile companies, yet they have only paid back (at that report) 7 billion dollars. And while you're at it, look into where many parts to GM vehicles come from - foreign countries - they're not all made in America, like you seem to believe. Medicare and Social Security actually comes out of every paycheck I make, so when Obama took money out of Medicare (which is taxpayer's money) and put it into his own "Obamacare", he literally is stealing from us! You must not work, to not know where Social Security money comes from.

Unlike many of these posters, I base my opinions on real life situations, not polls, percentages or statistics. Many of my friends/relatives have lost their jobs, then lost their homes. Many have college degrees, and can't find any work even close to their choice of careers, and are forced to take anything they can get. Many work more than one job, because many companies won't hire full - time. Many have no medical insurance, pensions, bonuses, profit sharing. Every week, I see another store that is closing in my area (western Montana). Illegals are moving in, taking jobs that locals should be getting. Many I know are working in the oil fields in Willits, North Dakota, but their families are still here, living with relatives, because there is no room for them with their husbands. With the exception of one, none of my friends/relative are lazy. They work hard, are loyal, honest people, who just want to live a decent life, and raise their children as THEY see fit, not as our government see fit.

The BIGGEST problem I see with the United States, is neither political party, nor the President, but something I just recently investigated myself. President Nixon, during his term, removed the laws that stated that every American dollar must be backed by the equal amount of gold. It was supposed to be temporary, but it still exists. Before that, many countries were using the American dollar as backing for their own currencies. As soon as the law changed, foreign countries started demanding gold rather than USD. The dollar has lost its value, the government consistantly prints more and more. Our government, seeing that the Social Security plan had a ton of surplus money, took that money out to pay bills for other debts, and never put ANY of it back! THAT'S why the SS is in trouble. If we don't give our dollar value again, we'll just keep sinking deeper.

I believe it was Franklin Roosevelt, who said, "we can have no hyphenated Americans in this country - either you're American, or you're not. What we will end up with, is many little groups, squabbling over everything, accomplishing nothing." And that's exactly what we have now. Sad.

You know what really bugs me, when Bain took a big hit on it's investments Romney got a bailout and took home $1M for his family for arranging the deal. When I took the same big hit, from a lack of regulation and oversight by the W administration, just like them, I got no bailout and my family and I took the hit. The difference? Romney did it on debt and other people's money, while I earned what I invested before hand.

I have read a number of posts above. Many good thoughts on either side.

But one important point that has been missed about Paul Ryan...his wife is really HOT!

Bill your right and wrong. Yes, in 1971 Pres. Nixon signed the bill that took our dollar off the gold standard, in other words our dollar's value was no longer based or could be converted to a commodity(gold) that had a limited supply (only digging more up would increase the amount) and could be controlled by outside sources, (other country's exchanging dollars for gold would reduce the supply of gold and increase the price of it, in effect deflating our dollar because it would take more dollars to buy the same amount of gold). As a side note, some may remember when the Hunt Brothers attempted to do just the same thing with the silver market, and lost.

Contrary to what you understand, no outside investors in our T-Bill's (which are what backs the dollar now) have had a problem investing in our governments credit, at least historically there has never been a "run" on T-Bill I.O.U.'s and today T-bills pay a historically low interest of 2.6%. If there was a investor attitude of negativity toward the T-Bill, as you suggest, the Treasury would have to raise the rate of interest to overcome the risk of investing. That has not happened and actually more investors are willing to invest in the U.S. Federal Expansion, I don't like to call it deficit as it is actually the sum of dollars that the Federal Government has added to the economy, and you can't have growth without more dollars in circulation, very simple. The rate of interest is at a historical low, on our Federal Expansion because investors from all over the world want to invest in our secure future, instead of Europe, China, or anywhere for that matter. You see those who invest in our Dollar with T-Bills have a secure future and income and are not willing to take additional risk in the world market for any Government Bond.

My opinion is that "deficit hawks" and "balanced budget" advocates are wrong in thinking that reducing the amount of Dollars that the Federal Government creates, and they are the only ones' that can create money, not State's or municipality's, will further expand the economy, but that is contrary to what a limited money supply from the Federal Government would do, add tax revenue and more money is taken out of the economy. Yes, when our dollar was backed by gold, a commodity, we needed to be strict balancers of the Federal Budget as added money in the economy would drive up the cost of gold and therefore our interest rate paid on the Federal Growth (deficit, for most but not all of us) could not be controlled.

One question that never is answered by those "deficit hawks" is when, the budget goes down and revenue's do not increase, what austerity measures would you accept and what return do you expect for those decreases?

The Federal Government, since 1971, has the ability to print all the money it needs, because it is backed by nothing but another dollar, remember there is no gold standard now. The President went on and on as to how bad deficit spending was. Without conditions of any kind to include any act of congress, the President vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. Well, this is the end of his first term. To keep the President's promise the federal deficit for this year, 2012, cannot exceed 229.27 billion dollars yet the President's own White House is predicting that the deficit will exceed 1.2 trillion dollars. The President also promised transparency. I want the President to explain what magic he is going to perform between now and the end of the fiscal year in order to keep his promise to the American people.

I estimate that the money the federal government is borrowing today will end up costing the tax payers more than 9 times the amount borrowed to repay over the next 170 years. That is just my estimate. I want the President to present a plan for repaying all of the money that it owes. The tax payers have a right to know how much all this federal borrowing is going to end up costing them.

The President needs to be reminded of some words of wisdom that were spoken back in March of 2006. The words are as true today as they were then.

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.

And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.

I know there are some slow and special people here so I will spell it out it simple basic terms you can understand.

#1. No matter how much money you have you will not be my king, lord, noble, etc. and I will not worship you for it either. WTF are you smoking that makes you think that in the country of "freedom" that anyone is going to be your slaves? This is important, once you UNDERSTAND that people are not going to be your slaves then we can proceed to the next point.

#2. Since we are not going to be your slaves YOU CANNOT KEEP ALL THE MONEY YOU HAVE "EARNED" IN THE LAST 30 YEARS OR SO. YOU MUST GIVE SOME OF IT BACK OR LET US PRINT MORE MONEY SO WE CAN DEVALUE THE MONEY THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE. It is that simple, math does not lie.

#3. There is not option that I can see that lets you keep ALL the money you have. Looking back at history revolution and war will be happening soon enough if you do not wake up and pull your heads out of your a$$es. The lines have been drawn and there is plenty of tinder laying around. All it takes it one good spark and you will be praying for it all to end.

#4. Most of us do not really like ALL of Obama's policies and executive orders. I think he is a sell out myself going on the laws he has signed, but there is no way in hell that the GOP is going to raise taxes on the rich or corporations. They are not going to fix any loopholes and let people that have more money then they can even spend MAKE EVEN MORE. WTF do they need more money for? The majority sits in banks offshore doing nothing for our economy. That is where any money that Mitt and most of the other super rich goes to, offshore, which has a NEGATIVE effect on our economy. Please attempt to explain in logic or math how that will help the economy.

#5. 10 to 1 wealth ratios are needed not 1000 to 1. The higher the earnings/wealth ratio is the LESS people can make that ratio or amount. NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU WORK, it is basic math. I am tired of hearing that same old line of B.S.; seen any good carrots on strings around today? I need to chase after the wind.

#6. Trickle down economics DOES NOT WORK. It works even less when you STOP the fing flow to the lower pools of the fountain. Now only the top part of the fountain has any water. I wonder why the pump is running dry and there is no NEW water being pumped up to the top level anymore?

#7. If investors only invest in things that will more then likely make them money how does this fix the economy? WHERE DOES THE EXTRA MONEY COME FROM? How can people make endless amounts of money without our government being forced to print out more? Therefore what good is it to have investors or to coddle the rich? They always want MORE, just like an addict. You will say and do anything it seems to get your fix just like an addict. Money is your drug, plain and simple. Why did you need more money? So it can sit in the bank and make more money? What are you going to do with that money? Why do you need so much? "None of my business"...B.S. since this is a closed system based off of zero. How much you makes effects how much I make.

#8. I do not hate rich people, they won the money game. We just need to play a new game since this game has already run its course. You do not want to start a new game is all. You somehow think that ONE game is enough. How many games of cards, monopoly, hungry hungry hippos, etc. did you only play ONE game of? Why did you play more then one game? /it is no fun when one person has all the chips, money, marbles, etc. and no one can even play. Once the players with no chips, money, marbles, etc. stop playing WHO IS LEFT TO PLAY WITH? There is no one to play with and hence NO GAME. And THEN you wonder why we get pissed off and eventually decide to take your chips, money, marbles, etc. since we have no other choice other then to stop playing. How many people do you think are just going to quit, lay down, roll over, and die?

(And yes we are slaves when I am forced to work for 1000 times less then someone else and I have my rights stripped away from me with the NDAA, Patriot Act, etc. You are trying to suppress the voters from voting which means they do not have a say and are "slaves".)

Obama didn't just give them a blank check...no market would risk investing in GM under the structure it operated in at the time. So Obama gave them a choice to reconcile their labor issues and come to the table clean...and by the looks of it, GM is making better cars than they ever were before...and they're profitable making small cars, not the high margin gas guzzling SUV's they relied on in the past.

Did you really think Pontiac and Saturn which held such little market share was ever going to be left in operation? First of all, I never claimed nor implied that parts don't come from the rest of the world...in fact, they do. My point (since you obviously missed it) is that if the parts companies which make parts for just about all the car companies went under because GM went under, it would create a crisis for all automobile companies, not just GM...these companies have become interdependent in the world and share so much, despite the fact they compete against each other.

To make this short, the few nickles and dimes each of us pays (even if you pay the maximum) comes nowhere close to the true cost of hospital care...hospital care is very expensive and no amount of lifetime payroll deduction will cover the cost of hospitalization on average...BTW, Medicare reimbursements to providers (doctors and hospitals) were also cut...if anything, the money taken from Medicare was used to extend the life of Medicare..the way things were going, it wouldn't exist in 20 years when healthcare consumes 80% of the federal budget. You are very welcome to check the facts here.

Paul Ryan lied about Medicare in his speech. Santorum lied about welfare in his speech. The Romney campaign has consistently lied about Obama's record throughout this campaign. I would say the Republican Party is the party of lies. Truth seems too inconvenient for them to try to use in their arguments and attacks.

This was a deceptive business practice and it was likely funded with money hidden from tax and law enforcement agencies all over the world.

Dishonesty and lying are ruining this country. When you hear a politician introduce himself to America as the new VP candidate and he lies in his speech about Medicare using his own mother as a prop, this should set off the alarm bells. Paul Ryan has been lying about Medicare since Day 1. He is a good liar, but the FACTS are there. The CBO knows he is lying. The CBO is honest. The Congressional Budget Office is non-partisan. The CBO says the $716 billion transfer of funds from Medicare to subsidizing ACA insurance was totally based on cost savings. And under ACA, BENEFITS ARE GUARANTEED.

PAUL RYAN, if you cannot make an honest argument, you do not deserve to be elected.

The President went on and on as to how bad deficit spending was. Without conditions of any kind to include any act of congress, the President vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. Well, this is the end of his first term. To keep the President's promise the federal deficit for this year, 2012, cannot exceed 229.27 billion dollars yet the President's own White House is predicting that the deficit will exceed 1.2 trillion dollars. The President also promised transparency. I want the President to explain what magic he is going to perform between now and the end of the fiscal year in order to keep his promise to the American people.

I estimate that the money the federal government is borrowing today will end up costing the tax payers more than 9 times the amount borrowed to repay over the next 170 years. That is just my estimate. I want the President to present a plan for repaying all of the money that it owes. The tax payers have a right to know how much all this federal borrowing is going to end up costing them.

The President needs to be reminded of some words of wisdom that were spoken back in March of 2006. The words are as true today as they were then.

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.

And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.

Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities. President Obama has cleaned up the mess America was in after 8 years of Republican mayhem.

The roots of the housing/banking crisis was not in the Bush years. It can be found in the Community Reinvestment Act signed by Jimmy Carter (Democrat) and exacerbated by Clinton who required banks to loosen their lending practices and removed the barrier between investment banking and commercial banking. It was really accelerated by Fannie and Freddie who began forcing banks to loan to people with no down payment requirement and no real proof to pay back the mortgage (Democratically controlled Congress stonewalled Bush attempt to shut this down in 2005 which would have helped avert the crisis. I hold this against Bush the he did not push harder).

Shepherd, I applaud your post. That was a very intelligent and truthful post. I find it fascinating that the vast majority of those who post on these MSN forums are so crude. 1) About the GM plant in Janesville.

Ryan’s home district includes a shuttered General Motors plant. Here’s what happened, according to Ryan:

A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: “I believe that if our government is there to support you … this plant will be here for another hundred years.” That’s what he said in 2008.

Well, as it turned out, that plant didn’t last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that’s how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight.

It’s true: The plant shut down. But it shut down in 2008—before Obama became president.

By the way, nobody questions that, if not for the Obama Administration’s decision to rescue Chrysler and GM, the domestic auto industry would have crumbled. Credible estimates suggested that the rescue saved more than a million jobs. Unemployment in Michigan and Ohio, the two states with the most auto jobs, have declined precipitously.

2) About Medicare.

Ryan attacked Obama for “raiding” Medicare. Again, Ryan has no standing whatsoever to make this attack, because his own budget called for taking the same amount of money from Medicare. Twice. The only difference is that Ryan’s budget used those savings to finance Ryan’s priorities, which include a massive tax cut that benefits the wealthy disproportionately.

It’s true that Romney has pledged to put that money back into Medicare and Ryan now says he would do the same. But the claim is totally implausible given Romney's promise to cap non-defense spending at 16 percent of gross domestic product.

By the way, Obamacare's cut to Medicare was a reduction in what the plan pays hospitals and insurance companies. And the hospitals said they could live with those cuts, because Obamacare was simultaneously giving more people health insurance, alleviating the financial burden of charity care.

What Obamacare did not do is take away benefits. On the contrary, it added benefits, by offering free preventative care and new prescription drug coverage. By repealing Obamacare, Romney and Ryan would take away those benefits—and, by the way, add to Medicare's financial troubles because the program would be back to paying hospitals and insurers the higher rates.

3) About the credit rating downgrade.

Ryan blamed the downgrading of American debt on Obama. But it was the possibility that America would default on its debts that led to the downgrade. And why did that possibility exist? Because Republicans refused to raise the debt ceiling, playing chicken not just with the nations’ credit rating but the whole economy, unless Obama would cave into their budget demands.

4) About the deficit.

Ryan said “President Obama has added more debt than any other president before him” and proclaimed “We need to stop spending money we don’t have.” In fact, this decade’s big deficits are primarily a product of Bush-era tax cuts and wars. (See graph.) And you know who voted for them? Paul Ryan.

5) About protecting the weak.

Here’s Ryan on the obligations to help those who can’t help themselves:

We have responsibilities, one to another – we do not each face the world alone. And the greatest of all responsibilities, is that of the strong to protect the weak. The truest measure of any society is how it treats those who cannot defend or care for themselves. … We can make the safety net safe again.

The rhetoric is stirring—and positively galling. Analysis from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities shows that 62 percent of the cuts in Ryan budget would come from programs that serve low-income people. And that’s assuming he keeps the Obamacare Medicare cuts. If he’s serious about putting that money back into Medicare, the cuts to these programs would have to be even bigger.

Among the cuts Ryan specified was a massive reduction in Medicaid spending. According to a report by the Kaiser Family Foundation and Urban Institute, between 14 and 27 million people would lose health insurance from these cuts. That’s above and beyond the 15 million or so who are supposed to get Medicaid coverage from the Affordable Care Act but wouldn’t because Romney and Ryan have pledged to repeal the law.

I realize conservatives think that transforming Medicaid into a block grant, so that states have more control over how to spend the money, can make the program more efficient. But Medicaid already costs far less than any other insurance program in America. And even to the extent states can find some new efficiencies, the idea that they can find enough to offset such a draconian funding cut is just not credible.

My wife runs the 'education' department at a hospital in my state. You should check out the penalties that will be assessed by the federal law under the (Un)Affordable Care Act. You have surgery on one of your fingers and someone mistakenly enters the wrong finger or same finger on the opposite hand...if the records don't jibe...payment denied...with a whole series of bells, whistles, and hoops to jump thru should the hospital choose to pursue the money.

She also has told me that hospitals and doctors are already chnaging the way they will do things when dealing with Medicare/Medicaid cases since the federal government will be reducing the percentages of those bills that will be paid to hospitals and doctors. I think Medicare/Medicaid currently pays 57% of the billed amounts due...and that number is to lowered to help cover the costs of the plan.

And the insurance companies haven't been doing this already? There have been several items I've had to pay for that are supposed to be covered under my insurance because someone coded it wrong and wouldn't correct it, a doctor was no longer in network, so they don't cover it at all? I have friends that have to fight every bill they get because something wasn't paid. It is a job to make sure the coverage you have will cover things these days. I don't trust any of them. There is alot of "education" that needs to happen.

The President went on and on as to how bad deficit spending was. Without conditions of any kind to include any act of congress, the President vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. Well, this is the end of his first term. To keep the President's promise the federal deficit for this year, 2012, cannot exceed 229.27 billion dollars yet the President's own White House is predicting that the deficit will exceed 1.2 trillion dollars. The President also promised transparency. I want the President to explain what magic he is going to perform between now and the end of the fiscal year in order to keep his promise to the American people.

I estimate that the money the federal government is borrowing today will end up costing the tax payers more than 9 times the amount borrowed to repay over the next 170 years. That is just my estimate. I want the President to present a plan for repaying all of the money that it owes. The tax payers have a right to know how much all this federal borrowing is going to end up costing them.

The President needs to be reminded of some words of wisdom that were spoken back in March of 2006. The words are as true today as they were then.

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.

And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.

Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities. Instead,interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans–a debt tax that Washington doesn’t want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies.

Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here. And you might want to wander over to the Univ. of Colorado's analysis of the Presidential Election. For the last eight presidential elections, they have correctly predicted the winner. In fact they are the only ones that correctly predicted the 2000 Race between Gore & Bush. They predicted Gore would win the popular vote, but lose the electoral vote. What does their analysis state for this years Presidential Elections?

According to their analysis, President Barack Obama will win 218 votes in the Electoral College, short of the 270 he needs. And though they chiefly focus on the Electoral College, the political scientists predict Romney will win 52.9 percent of the popular vote to Obama’s 47.1 percent, when considering only the two major political parties. Silver did not even begin analyzing Presidential Elections until 2008. So he has done ONE! Silver's predictions matched the actual results everywhere except in Indiana and the 2nd congressional district of Nebraska, which awards an electoral vote separately from the rest of the state. His projected national popular vote differential was below the actual figure of 7.2 points. But then again, you can't be 100% correct your first time out.

Final analysis are the first Tuesday of November. But to use Silver as a indicator? Please.....surely you can find many more analyst who have been doing this far longer then him. ONE....REALLY!!!

The fed fined them $34,000 for using the wrong federal form." Do you have a source for this? If this is true, it's certainly a problem. That doesn't mean that the government doesn't help build all kinds of infrastructure though.
