We have mentioned before (here and here) about how Eric Cantor has said he will block relief funds without offsetting cuts. He threatened to do it with funds for relief in Joplin, MO after their devastating F5 tornado, and again with Hurricane Irene. Apparently, the outcry about his positions did nothing to change the Republican mindset, and last night they voted to block a FEMA funding bill, never allowing it to come to a vote. Via Raw Story:

A package of disaster relief funding worth $7 billion was blocked from coming up for a vote by Senate Republicans on Monday, drawing sharp condemnation from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) who lambasted the conservative party for abandoning Americans in need.

“Last night, Democrats tried to move forward on a measure that would have granted the Federal Emergency Management Agency additional funding to help communities devastated by natural disasters,” Sen. Reid said in an advisory.

“This ought to be the least political issue going – whether to reach out a helping hand to our friends and neighbors in their time of need,” he continued. “They have lost friends and loved ones. Their homes, businesses and livelihoods have been destroyed by acts of god. Their communities are under water or reduced to rubble.

The vote was 53-33, with Republicans uniting against measure that would have brought the aid package to a vote and put a rush on some emergency funds. A 60-vote majority was required to pass it.

“They don’t need help next week or next month,” Reid railed. “They need it now. They need it today.”

He added that because of the increased number of natural disasters this year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has just over $300 million left. President Barack Obama has issued disaster declarations in 48 states since the beginning of 2011.

The funds are so low, Reid said, that FEMA has stopped rebuilding the town of Joplin, Missouri, which was practically destroyed by tornadoes earlier this year. It withdrew funding for the Joplin rebuilding in order to provide food and shelter to the victims of Hurricane Irene.

So – flooding victims aren’t getting the funds, and the people of Joplin are being victimized again, not by an act of God but an act of Senate Republicans. Keep in mind that this wasn’t a vote to deny the funds. It was a vote to deny the funding ever being considered. Maybe they thought that if it didn’t come up for a full vote, they could sweep it under the rug. I have a hunch those folks who have lost homes, businesses – even family members – won’t be so eager to see this swept away without full consideration.

Disaster relief is one of the things that government is best suited for. But as the constant drone from the right tells us, we should have no government. That somehow, these people should be able to fend for themselves when these disasters happen. As Ron Paul said in the CNN/Tea Party Express debate, that’s freedom.

In this case, it’s the freedom to lose everything you own and care about, and not get any help in recovering. I hope the folks in these hard-hit areas remember who pulled the rug out from under them when the 2012 elections roll around.

Molly here. My numbers come from the BLS charts. We are NOT losing 350,00 jobs a month, and anyone who says that we are doesn't know what he/she is talking about or looking at. Few people take the time or trouble to actually dig into the BLS numbers and understand what they mean.

We are doing about as well as Bush in comparing numbers of jobs since taking office and since the "trough" of jobs. In some respects, Obama is doing a bit better, in some respects Bush was doing better at this time in his presidency.

As soon as it started to come down, they switched to blathering on about the "real" unemployment rate. I don't remember any blathering about the "real" unemployment before 2011.

And, tell us, if you were counting the unemployed, who would you count? People who are looking for work, certainly. But what about people who haven't looked for work for a year? Should they count? People who are disabled? People who are retired? 16 year olds looking for a part-time job after school for a few hours? Parents taking a leave of absence to spend time with a new baby? What about people who say they want a job but they haven't looked for a while because they are ill? Or they haven't looked because they don't have a car? Would you count them? What about a recent college graduate who decides to tour Europe for a few months instead of getting a job?

You tell me which of these various groups of people should be considered "unemployed", and I'll tell you the "real" unemployment rate.

Three million jobs is not bunk if you are one of the three million people who got those jobs. And I know a few people with brand new jobs just among my circle of friends and relatives.

And we have never used the labor participation rate to determine the unemployment rate. How would we determine which labor participation rate to use? The one from 1970? What about the one we had in 1983? Or the one from 1991? 1998? 2007? 2008?

Remember that a high labor participation rate and the employment participation rate aren't necessarily good things. Isn't it a good thing that young people can stay in school and not have to drop out to support themselves and their families? Should 16 year olds really be counted when we calculate these rates? And isn't it a good thing if parents can spend some time with their babies instead of immediately returning to work? And isn't it the mark of a prosperous country that older people can actually retire instead of working until they drop?

And, if you are going to use the labor participation rate, shouldn't you adjust it for the age of the population?

Blocking subpoena power in disaster investigative commissions is unheard of. The terrorists crisis, the financial crisis and Three Mile Island commissions all had subpoena power. However, Senate Republicans gave no explanation on Monday when they blocked the Presidential Commission on the BP oil spill from having subpoena power to conduct the investigation. "These guys are in bed with the oil industry" said MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews.

Sen. Byron Dorgan D-ND said, "At a hearing that I was at we had Halliburton, Transocean and BP, all of whom were involved on this rig and this drill, and you know what they were doing is pointing at each other. Well, listen, the only way you're going to get to the real truth and find out exactly what happened is to be able to subpoena all of them and say, look, you have got to produce all of your books and records so that we can inspect them and understand what happened a mile under the ocean out there."

Protecting BP does not serve the American people, and it will not bring the truth to the millions of people along the Gulf Coast who are entitled to answers. Moreover, it is an insult to the families of the eleven men who were killed the night the Deepwater Horizon exploded. It is difficult to fathom how the Republicans can justify obstructing justice in the BP oil spill, but that is exactly what they have done. The bigger question is, how can Americans let them get away with it?

The move makes little sense, apart from Matthews conclusion which suggests that Republicans have been financially motivated to protect BP from being forced to supply the facts on what caused the April 20, 2010 disaster that killed eleven people, and polluted the Gulf of Mexico with almost 5 million barrels of oil and 2 million gallons of toxic chemical dispersant.

We all recognize that other people provide support for our actions and successes and rarely does anyone accomplish anything completely on their own. But the difference is that Obama was using that as an excuse for requiring those who have achieved a level of success to pay a second time (for roads, school bills, etc) via a punitive taxation policy on success to help support many people who had absolutely no part in their effort. That is the real message behind his statement and was not in any way behind the comments of Governor Romney.

Corporate bribery and political corruption on display at Republican, Democratic conventions

The world was spared one day of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida thanks to the arrival of Hurricane Isaac, which forced the organizers to delay the proceedings until Tuesday. For the next three days, however, the degradation and corruption of the American political system will be on full display.

There is in this year's quadrennial conventions an unabashed flaunting of the role of corporate money in what passes for American democracy that goes beyond even the debased levels of previous presidential elections. The Republicans go out of their way to present themselves as the paid stooges of corporate America. The Democrats are a bit more devious—but only a bit.

Away from the minutely scripted and orchestrated proceedings in the convention hall—with all their hokum and stupidity—the serious business of peddling influence and selling votes will take place in what the New York Times on Sunday called a "parallel convention." The newspaper's front-page article on the Republican meeting, in a tone closer to admiration than revulsion, begins as follows:

"The railway giant CSX, which has spent $2 million this year lobbying on issues like greenhouse gas regulation and hazardous waste transportation rules, will park special train cars near the Tampa Bay Times Forum to host parties and meetings."

It goes on to list various parties and events at exclusive venues, including a yacht, for convention delegates, office-holders and Republican Party officials that are being hosted by super PACs such as Americans for Prosperity (co-founded by the oil billionaire and Tea Party sugar daddy David Koch), trade groups such as the American Petroleum Institute, lobbying firms, corporations, and multimillionaire fundraisers.

The Republican host committee has a $55 million budget and is sponsored by such corporations as Target, Chevron and Microsoft.
"Lobbyists and trade groups, virtually all with business before Congress and federal agencies, are paying for a nonstop schedule of beach parties, concerts and cocktail hours," the Times writes. "Each party's quadrennial conventions," it declares is "a gathering of money and influence unrivaled in politics."

What goes on at these events, however, is only a more concentrated and extravagant version of politics as usual. "What happens day to day in Washington—fundraising, lobbying, dining and entertainment—expands to a gigantic scale around the conventions."

It has been decades since the nominees for president and vice president of the two big business party were actually selected at the national conventions. As the Wall Street Journal noted in its August 24 article, headlined "Red Carpet for Republican Donors:"

"The official function of a political convention—the selection of a nominee—is now fulfilled long beforehand. Its events serve two other important purposes: introducing a candidate to a prime-time audience for one hour each evening; and, during the rest of the time, showing love and appreciation to donors."

In the case of the Republicans, this means 1,500 top fundraisers with whom Romney will meet in a series of exclusive events reserved for "Stars," who have raised at least $250,000, and "Stripes," who have gathered at least $500,000. "This will be a flagship taking-care-of donors convention," Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets and head of Mr. Romney's fundraising in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, told the Journal.

The other side of this orgy of official venality is a massive security operation to intimidate and marginalize political protest. The City of Tampa is, according to The Hill web site, "on virtual lockdown this week." Thousands of protesters will be penned into a "designated free speech zone" away from the convention hall. In other words, they will be denied the right to effectively exercise their free speech rights while being set up for police provocations and large-scale arrests.

The massive security operation, headed up by the Secret Service, involves the FBI, the Coast Guard and the military. Thousands of police from surrounding cities are expected to be deployed to bolster the local police. Federal officials have closed a major highway and placed floating barriers in the harbor. Air and water security zones have been set up and traffic restrictions imposed.


The Hill reported Saturday that the FBI and Homeland Security Department issued a joint intelligence bulletin last week declaring their "high confidence" that anarchist groups are "preparing to use violence and criminal tactics in an attempt to disrupt the Republican National Convention."

The level of repression is in inverse relation to the level of public enthusiasm for the elections and the two major candidates. Last week, a joint USA Today/Gallup poll was published showing that for the first time at this point in at least six elections, voters view both the Republican and Democratic parties unfavorably.

Far from the Wall Street debacle four years ago abashing the corporate-financial elite and its political parties, the domination of corporate money over the political system has become even more naked. Since the Supreme Court's 2010 decision in the Citizens United case removing all legal restrictions on corporate funding of election campaigns, it seems, both the bribers and the bribed have concluded they have a green light.

At the Republican gathering, for example, the Financial Services Roundtable, Wall Street's leading trade group, will host an invitation only luncheon for members of Congress and financial regulators, followed by a panel on how federal policy affects its members' retirement and annuity products.

Some 27 corporations and industry trade groups are known to be sponsoring the Republican convention, including the American Petroleum Institute, the American Natural Gas Alliance, Chevron, Coca-Cola, CSX, Ford, Google, Microsoft, UPS, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Xerox.

The Democrats, who meet next week in Charlotte, North Carolina to officially nominate Barack Obama, have made much of their decision to bar corporate donations to their convention host committee. This is cynical ruse.

They have set up a related entity, New American City Inc., which is accepting money from such firms as Bank of America, Duke Energy, AT&T, Coca-Cola and Wells Fargo. Between the $36 million being raised by the official host committee and the $10 million to $15 million goal of New American City, the Democrats expect to collect nearly as much as their Republican opponents.

Ann Romney talked about the difficulties women go through in bringing up the kids, balancing family life with health problems, etc. Obama's affordable healthcare act (aka Obamacare) helps women in these situations (pre-existing conditions, getting kids under 26 under their plan, etc.). She didn't say one word about what the government would do make the women's lives better, if Romney were to become the President.

Jobs, not one proposal (zilch, nada, nothing) about how Mitt Romney's government would create one single job. They spoke in all fluffy languages, but not one plan, one proposal to create a single job. America, the secret is out. Romney doesn't have a plan for creating jobs in this country. More of trickle down economics and code words like "Job Creators", union busting, etc. Tired old party that lacks diversity and lacks plan for jobs.

Because if he did show his tax returns, Americans would shout so loud with disgust that even the most committed Republican would not vote for him. And it is estimated that he has undeclared untaxed equity income and capitol gains income in excess of 200 million dollars in those off shore accounts. Not only that, he'd have to admit to the Mormon church that the real 10% he is mandated to give would be based on all his money, not just what he claims on his 1040. He specifically requested an extension until Dec 1, 2012 for his 2011 returns so that there would be no record available for 2011, that is why he only showed 1 year and no more. DB Akron....et al.... Romney got a lot of government help to finance the Salt Lake olympics. He did not do it on his own nor used his own money to do so. He lobbied for a bailout and received millions of dollars of taxpayers monies from the government, closer to a billion dollars if I am not mistaken. So he needed help to succeed.

By the way those various people in those commercials stating they built their business by themselves got help from the government if form of loans, contracts and grants. The monies etc they were given was taxpayers monies... so we all contributed financially to their business success too.

This idea that each business person built their business by themselves without help and thus do not need to help anyone else is bogus.

Regarding President Obama's speech, he was indeed correct in that we are all interdependent, and need to help each other for US(A) to succeed. Elizabeth Warren gave a speech sometime back on the same topic. There were those folks that did not agree with her back then either, rather chosing to believe they did not owe anyone any help because they built their business all by themselves... as if... LOL

Below is a message I posted back then pointing out why she was correct in what she stated regarding the social contract. The same holds true for President Obama's speech.

........ the taxes that the company owner pays would not be enough to completely build a highway or train tracks from coast to coast and in the areas inbetween and thus the factory owner would not be able to transport his products on just the portion of the road that his taxes alone paid for.

Plus considering that many of these companies do not even pay any taxes and get subsidies, refunds and taxbreaks, they are therefore freeloading off the rest of us.

To build and maintain these roads, bridges and highways and all the other infrastructure like sewers and water pipes, the electric grid, internet, wireless, even the nuclear energy plants have been funded by ALL of us.

The land that the company builds the plant or building on is often subsidized, given at low cost or no cost, land cleared and prepped, taxbreaks, offsets, etc valued in the millions of dollars and is bourn by the state's residents oftentimes with a corresponding raise of taxes on the citizens of that state as they must pay with increased property taxes and higher state tax rate.

The schools and universities are built and maintained by taxes we all pay for to educate the owner of the company and the workers. And the list goes on on the things that we must do as a country together because it would indeed would have been too expensive for the company to do on its own.

The same is done for the airlines, defense firms/manufactors, transportation- rail and road,auto- big oil, pharma, hospitality like hotels, and even churches and hospitals, housing etc are also subsidized by we the people no matter if they are public or privately owned corporations/companies. These people got a helping hand from allll of us period whether you want to believe it or not. Even the moneys they borrow may be funds guaranteed by all of us.

Our govt borrows money in our name, we are the guarantors of that debt. We were the guarantor for the bail out funds given to these financial companies but those companies were not nationalized. We the people were the guarantor for the bail out funds for the auto industry.. which was then partially nationalized unlike the financial sector. At least the auto industry created products and jobs.

Walmart for eg made a lot of money off of us the people bearing the cost of the healthcare for their employees through medicaid, because they did not offer health insurance coverage to their employees, as well as they received a lot of subsidies and tax breaks etc to build their big box stores. Corporations and companies do receive subsidies and taxbreaks for installation of green energy for example solar that is paid for by all of us, although it is the stock holders who receive the major portion of the benefits.

Many technologies and inventions came about by the NASA space program that was financed by all of us the people and was put into production by these private or publicly traded companies who were the recipients of the profits.

Nuclear energy plants are too costly for a company to build on its own so the building of these plants are subsidized by us the people. That is why there is difficulty building new nuclear power plants ... they are trying to get the govt to finance the building of same because it will take alll of us to guarantee the funds- although the finished plant will not be owned by the masses i.e. nationalized.

The cost is nationalized but the profits are privatized. LOL

We the people will have to absorb the cost of the cleanup of the Gulf and the surrounding affected wetlands in the final analysis, because the long term damage will remain for years even after BP et al conventiently forgets and or appeals whatev responsibility they have in the matter into the next century and beyond so they can keep their profits high for their stockholders at our expense.

The building and maintainance of the dams were and are financed by us the people. The levees building and maintainance is guaranteed by us the people. And the list goes on.....

We are all interdependent. There is a social contract that needs to be upheld by alll of us now and to pay it forward for the next generation.....and for the next generation to pay forward for the next and so on.

In recent times there has been this selfishness, selfcenteredness and greed that has become so pervasive in our country where some people feel or believe that they do not owe anything to anyone else, and for some, not even their own family much less the rest of the population.

They believe they did it all on their own without help from the rest of us. These are the people who do not acknowledge our interdependence and oftentimes believe that they alone are worthy of or are due all of the profits and benefits.

These selfish people are the sort of folk who believe that any help or taxbreaks and subsidies etc that they got should not be made available to the rest of us/the masses because when assistance is given or made available to the masses/public that would be welfare and thus socialism/communism and is wrong. Also if people in the masses should question this income disparity or one way assistance then that would be the masses being envious and stirring up class warfare. LOL

I keep reading from Democrats how the Republicans are the ones responsible for our poor economy. Let me remind you of some interesting facts. The economy was positioned to grow before Bill Clinton took office and it di during his first termand the first part of his second. The democtratic policy that was put in place during his term in office flowed over into the Bush years and those policy still haunt us today.

One only needs to review the behavior of republican congressmen and senators for the past four years to arrive at the unavoidable conclusion that the cause of the constant sequence of legislative impasses that have been plaguing both the House and theSenate during the Obama administration--and especially since the 2010 congressional elections--must be laid directly at the feet of the Republican party.

This conclusion should not come as a great surprise to anyone who has been following politics for at least the last couple of years. Senate minority leader, republican Mitch McConnell, clearly stated the GOP goal at least until the 2012 elections: to make sure that Obama would be a one-term president! There was no mention of solving the country's serious economic and social problems. To cooperate in any way with Obama or the Democrats might result in credit being given to Obama. Instead,the Republican strategy has consistently been to block any legislation thatwould be beneficial to the country or its citizens. Ironically, this strategy has required the GOP to oppose ideas that they themselves have endorsed and initiated in the recent past. Since the Republicans are in a slight minority in the Senate, they have resorted to that antiquated tool, the filibuster, to block every serious piece of legislation, including popular proposals that have the approval of the majority.

The GOP obstruction effort has been even easier in the House of epresentatives. Since 2010, when intransigent Tea Party fanatics were elected and invaded the institution, theRepublicans have held a substantial majority. They have used that majority to block virtually every piece of substantive or helpful legislation, while fostering endless bills addressing their extreme views on social issues. While driving the nation to the brink of default on our national debt, resulting in a lowering of our credit rating for the first time in history, they have introduced endless bills to abolish abortion rights and overthrow Obama's signature health care legislation, the Affordable Care Act.

The current crop of Republicans are people who have little understanding of how government functions, who have no respect for the needs of the broader spectrum of their ethnically diverse fellow citizens, and who are extremely intolerant of anyone who disagrees, however slightly, with their inane politics and long-nurtured hatred of everything that is not white, evangelically religious, and ready to kill for a cause, however ignoble and partisan

BusinessWeek describes the multiple mechanisms Mitt and Ann Romney have used to protect their wealth—well over $250 million by our calculations not including another $100 million in a family trust—from estate taxes and ordinary taxes (returns for which, as we noted yesterday, he has largely not released, unusual for a presidential candidate in the modern era). Through their use of the tools of charitable giving, Mitt and Ann Romney are demonstrating themselves as adept at understanding the mechanics of contemporary charity and philanthropy, or at least adept at understanding and following the advice of the man who seems to manage most of their finances, Brad Malt of the large Boston-based law firm Ropes & Gray.

CRUTs are interesting tools. Say you’re a multi-millionaire like Romney. You could set up a CRUT for a few million or so. The CRUT will then pay you (or a non-charitable beneficiary you designate) a fixed percentage of the assets every year (no less than five percent and no more than 50 percent). When you die, the remaining assets in the CRUT go to a charity or charities you specify. At least 10 percent of the CRUT must be reserved for charitable distribution.

Under Republican rule, a worker with a pre-existing medical condition has been held hostage by his health coverage to work a job he may thoroughly hate. Many people who in an earlier time would have ventured out to start their own business are now discouraged by being tied to their employer's health care plan. Health insurance has become unaffordable to many without employer provided health coverage.

The vitality of entrepeneurship has been undermined by the lack of viable affordable health insurance in the open market. As a small businessman, I have experienced firsthand how bad the old system worked. I covered four employees and my family in my group health insurance plan. When one of my employees was diagnosed with colon cancer, I not only lost a good employee (he died within the year), I was also socked by a 60% increase in my premiums the first year, 40% the second year and 30 % each year after that. I was trapped in my policy because my wife had a pre-existing condition that would require expensive treatment/surgery at any time if it got worse. We continued with this prohibitively expensive small group health insurance for a total of 4 years until she finally got her surgery curing the condition. We then switched to a much less expensive plan.

This occurred during the Bush Administration 2001-2005 and I remember watching Bush's State of the Union 2 years in a row where he talked about the need to group small employers together in a small group plan that would solve this problem of a bad experience rating in a small group. He made promises, but he and his republican party never did a thing. I had to wait for Pres. Obama to pass his ACA until the problem was finally dealt with.

Republicans always talk about how they will help small businesses, but they rarely do anything. It's just talk. They're too busy cutting tax rates for rich guys like Romney and creating loopholes for big business to do anything to help the small businessman.

I am not Mormon but I know that there's alot worse kind of people out there than the Mormons. I know who comes first in Ms Romney's life, it's her family and that's how it should be. It's not her fault that her husband has worked hard and become a successful business man is it? Why are you so jealous of other people's accomplishments? This isn't a woman whose done nothing all her life. Maybe you need to stop criticizing others so much and do something with yourself. You have too much free time on your hands.

Giving to a church is not wasteful. I have seen people down on their luck being helped through church donations, from churches of all denominations who take in and feed strangers, possible by donations from people like the Romneys. Some people will take advantage but the churches keep giving when they can.

Maybe you should start learning how to give rather than fretting about what you're gonna get out of government programs like Medicare. How about saving up some of your own money for your own future? Our biggest problem right now is that we have too many people just like you. Our government can't take care of everybody who has sqaundered all of their own money. Not without going bankrupt.

It’s perhaps unsurprising that Mormonism, an indigenous American religion, would also adopt the country’s secular faith in money. What is remarkable is how varied the church’s business interests are and that so little is known about its financial interests. Although a former Mormon bishop is about to receive the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, and despite a recent public-relations campaign aimed at combating the perception that it is “secretive,” the LDS Church remains tight-lipped about its holdings. It offers little financial transparency even to its members, who are required to tithe 10 percent of their income to gain access to Mormon temples.

The Mormon Church is hardly the only religious institution to be less than forthcoming about its wealth; the Catholic Church has been equally opaque throughout history. On the other hand, says historian D. Michael Quinn, who is working on a book about the LDS Church’s finances and businesses, “The Mormon Church is very different than any other church. … Traditional Christianity and Judaism make a clear distinction between what is spiritual and what is temporal, while Mormon theology specifically denies that there is such a distinction.” To Latter-day Saints, opening megamalls, operating a billion-dollar media and insurance conglomerate, and running a Polynesian theme park are all part of doing God’s work. Says Quinn: “In the Mormon [leadership’s] worldview, it’s as spiritual to give alms to the poor, as the old phrase goes in the Biblical sense, as it is to make a million dollars.”

First among its for-profit enterprises is DMC, which reaps estimated annual revenue of $1.2 billion from six subsidiaries, according to the business information and analysis firm Hoover’s Company Records (DNB). Those subsidiaries run a newspaper, 11 radio stations, a TV station, a publishing and distribution company, a digital media company, a hospitality business, and an insurance business with assets worth $3.3 billion.

AgReserves, another for-profit Mormon umbrella company, together with other church-run agricultural affiliates, reportedly owns about 1 million acres in the continental U.S., on which the church has farms, hunting preserves, orchards, and ranches. These include the $1 billion, 290,000-acre Deseret Ranches in Florida, which, in addition to keeping 44,000 cows and 1,300 bulls, also has citrus, sod, and timber operations. Outside the U.S., AgReserves operates in Britain, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil. Its Australian property, valued at $61 million in 1997, has estimated annual sales of $276 million, according to Dun & Bradstreet.
