Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania
Former United States Sen. Arlen Specter confirmed Tuesday that he is battling cancer for the third time.
"I'm battling cancer. It's another battle I intend to win," he said in a statement.
Specter battled non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma while in office in 2005, losing much of his hair while undergoing chemotherapy. He was treated for the cancer again in 2008. He also underwent surgery for a brain tumor while in office.

The 82-year-old former senator from Pennsylvania is remaining positive as far as this bout of the disease is concerned.
"I'm looking forward to getting back to work, to the comedy stage and the ballpark," he said.
Specter served on the Senate Judiciary Committee since 1981 and was chairman from 2005 to 2007.
Before spending a record 30 years representing Pennsylvania in the Senate, Specter was a two-term District Attorney of his adopted home city of Philadelphia in the late 1960s and early 70s.
Specter switched parties in 2009. The long-time Republican ended his career as a Democrat in 2010 when he was defeated in his sixth bid for U.S. Senate.

Prayers for your full recovery Mr. Specter!
Don't worry.............he has Obamacare now.
No he doesn't, he has Medicare.
Tom, he's had government healthcare since the Kennedy administration. No kidding. He was on the Warren Commission. I'm sure as a retiree, he's still got his congressional healthcare and he's over 82, so he's got Medicare.
Hopefully this will teach you something. Obama is just trying to let normal citizens get a piece of what the politicians have already had for years.
They ALL had Obamacare before it was even conceived as Obamacare...I mean...you DO pay for THEIR healthcare, and pensions, and everything else.
I'd be for Medicare for all. Just let me pay the premiums, no subsidy needed. It'll be cheaper than what I have now and cover me better. And I'm much healthier than my 81 year old grandmother. My paid premium would offset her costs. But, that would be "socialism" to so many.
I hope good ol'Arlen gets better. He's a nice guy, met him once. Shady as a politico, but a nice guy.
...
Not to worry.
He has SENATECARE.
...
Just to let you folks know, Congress, Senators and families, the Presdent and
his wife are all exempt from obamacare. Page 114 Line# 22.
I'm sure the benefits we provide Congress and Executive Branch are much better than what we little people will ever get anywhere...unless we can afford to pay our medical bills out of our pockets.
Sad that people think they don't deserve the kind of health care programs that their Exalted Elected Officials get...for life. And they don't do s t.
I hope the traitor suffers daily and forever for the harm his self serving vote will cause till it is REPEALED!
RIP traitor- you deserve it.
God Almighty I hate when people are insufferable bas$$$ds behind a screen name. How utterly cruel of you. I wish Mr. Spector well, and to you fake, I know that karma is there for you, you spiteful slug.
It's pretty pathetic when you have to make sh1t up. Just...wow. Were you hoping that everyone was as clueless as you and would not go and actually look that up?
Here’s the text from H.R. 3200, the Affordable Care Act, on page 114.
I made line 22 bold for you, just in case you have issues with numbers. Can you please point out where it's exempting Obama/Congress/Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny? Yea, that's what I thought.
Next time, how about you do your own fact checking instead of relying on nifty little sound bites that will only make you look stupid when you run to Newsvine to post them? Because there are a whole lot of people pointing and laughing at you right now.
@Poor-Man, you have the right to make up your own mind, of course. But you do not have the right to make up your own facts. A man who must make his point by using deception, has no point to make.
The lies and fabrications being spread about the Affordable Care Act should cause deep shame for those perpetuating those lies. It is bewildering that these people instead actually take pride in their dishonesty.
When did truth become quaint and irrelevant? What has happened to our national moral compass?

What Is The Truth About Health Care Reform?
http://www.forbes.com/sites/carolynmcclanahan/2012/07/03/what-is-the-truth-about-health-care-reform/
Page 114 of the law discusses the four different levels of health insurance that would be sold on the exchange – and line 22 focuses on the “gold plan.” In case you are curious, Title I, Section 1312 “Consumer Choice” contains the verbiage that Congress is required to use plans created under the law. You can actually go read it. Go to page 157, starting at Line 16.
From Page 157 of the Affordable Care Act; starting at Line 16:
(D) MEMBERS OF CONGRESS IN THE EXCHANGE.—
(i) REQUIREMENT.—Notwithstanding any other provision of law, after the effective date of this subtitle, the only health plans that the Federal Government may make available to Members of Congress and congressional staff with respect to their service as a Member of Congress or congressional staff shall be health plans that are—
(I) created under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act); or
(II) offered through an Exchange established under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act).
I'm sure his health plan will cover all the costs for this third round of treatments. Must be nice.
Adam,
Regardless of what your political stance is, I'm asking nicely, please do refrain from making this a political statement. Cancer has no political affiliation. I don't know about you, but I've had family members and close friends die from that god-awful disease.
It's a sh%&&y way to go.
Cancer is blind to age, ethnicity, gender, religion, political affiliation, sexual orientation, and income level...I hope he is able to recover..
I agree with Adam. I work in Cancer prevention and know that MANY die because they don't have good insurance to pay for a VERY costly disease. Also, my father died of multiple myeloma in April but it doesn't make me blind to this.
@ my2cents$ ... Sorry for the loss of your family members and even sad that Mr. Specter will suffer yet again. But I'm sorry. This IS A POLITICAL ISSUE!! Common citizens NO LONGER HAVE the same insurance benefit options that are afforded to US Elected officials. Elected officials are not subject to the same insurance limitations. I know this to be fact. Their healthcare is free. Further ... their benefits are far superior. HONESTLY!! MY grandfather WAS DENIED certain benefits because of his age. His insurance would not cover meds and certain treatments BASED ON HIS AGE!! They decided the cost would outweight any significant benefit. His insurance provider decided this. My Grandfather was younger than Mr. Specter who is now on his third go-around. I wish Mr. Specter no ill will but face it, IT IS TRULY A POLITICAL issue.
I agree fully leftwanting. As long as Mr. Spector and rest of our elected officials are enjoying health care benefits paid for, but not enjoyed by their constituents, it is very much a political issue.
leftwanting - know what? Fine, I'll concede that this COULD BE CONSTRUED as a political issue IF YOU WANT IT TO BE. But let me just point out, I'm unemployed and can't afford health insurance. I'd merely hoped to keep politics out because we're talking about a disease that, as I stated, has no political affiliation. Your grandfather might have, or might NOT have appreciated his situation being politicized. Please don't be offended, that wasn't my intention, but hopefully you get my point.
Conversely, my father, who recently passed away from Alzheimers, was only able to stay in the home he was in because he and my step mom were able to squirrel away enough money to pay for it. So please don't think I'm not affected by the healthcare issue.
But, since this has become a political issue, I'll state for the record, no, I don't think it's right that politicians get free healthcare while the rest of us don't.
We cool now?
So if it is not political why, out of all the hundreds of thousands of people, even children, suffering from cancer does Specter get "special" consideration and recognition in a major liberal mainstream publication? Because Specter is a major liberal mainstream kind of hero. And it is ALL political. There are many people out there that are suffering a lot more, and given a lot more, that deserve the recognition more than he does. I have to wonder if he had remained a Republican would he be featured here. I doubt it. Not political-you bet.
totherepublic - I didn't say it's not political. I said it's political if you choose to make it so, that's all. What I got from the story is simply this: a man has cancer.
totherepublic- you really can't keep your foot outta your mouth, can you. (that was a statement, not a question, hence the period. "period.")
No, the disease is not political. What's political is who gets good treatment and who doesn't. If you come down with cancer and you don't have a job or work for a company that doesn't provide health insurance, do you really think you're going to get the same kind of care that Senator Spector gets?
So you make a deal with the hospital to pay the $500,000+ out of your pocket on a salary of $30,000 a year. Good luck with that.
Not political...it's OBSCENE that not everyone who gets cancer can get treated! PERIOD!
I am so sick and tired of brandishing the concept that everyone be entitled to reasonable...if that means affordable on a sliding scale or free...healthcare as belonging to the 'Socialist Boogeyman', I could scream! SCREAM!
Yet another clueless person who'd rather run to Newsvine with some witty comment burning a hole in his brain without first checking to see if it's even true.
Gratz! You're wrong. I'm tired of copy/pasting rebuttals to stupid comments, so instead I'll post a link and you can read it for yourself if you choose or you may continue to remain ignorant to the facts.
http://www.factcheck.org/2009/08/health-care-for-members-of-congress/
Prayers are with you for a full recovery. I'm sure you have many stories to tell that we could all learn from and I'm sure a few that would give us a laugh or two. Take care and get well soon.
It's great to have free health care for life!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bob, wise up and realize you are being duped. Congress does not get free health care. Check out this site, and also check out FactCheck.org
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0809/25829.html
@verno
Yea I posted the factcheck.org link a few comments up. I don't know if some people actually believed the whole free medical thing, or if they are intentionally lying in hopes of furthering their agenda.
He's the reason why my dad was a Republican.
Today's Republican Party is definitely not my father's Republican Party.
The Democratic Party is the only one making any sort of sense today.
Q: Who demands to be allowed to govern the vast collective wealth of the American people, yet is reticent in allowing the American people to see how he handles his own personal wealth to make that ultimate determination of a man's character?
A: Republican Mitt Romney.
NO SENSE. SHOW US how you would manage OUR money or go away.
Senator Specter, Get well soon!
boogablue, you talkin' to me?
boogablue
Make perfect sense to support a democratic president and Democratically congrolled congress that almost shut our government down on August 2,2011 due to the amount of debt it put this country in.
A democratic President that made this speech, then created a debt crisis which has made our government unstable.
The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.
And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.
Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities. Instead, interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans–a debt tax that Washington doesn’t want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies.
Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.
I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.
Sen. Barack Hussein Obama, Jr., (Senate – March 16, 2006)
boo
If you had been seriously watching interviews with Romney/Ryan (but of course you would have over come another bias to do that-watch fox-because the main steam will not cover them) you would have seen them "SHOW US how you would manage OUR money". The have specifically laid out a lot of it. The have actually admited it IS our money and they work for US. If really listen to both of them and rely on your own judgement you will see they have a very good plan. Obama dosen't. You really need to drop all the old smear and fear rhetoric and watch what is going on or you are going to miss out on a pretty important part of our history. Oh, I am sorry, I assumed you wanted to know the truth...my mistake. You can go back to the dream now.
totherepublic
If posting Obama's own words is a smear. I guess it shows Obama smears himself.
I don't watch fox for as you say, its for entertainment purposes only. They don't entertain me.
I prefer reading Obama's speeches. Its an interesting study of a man who condemns himself as irresponsible and a failed leader every time he opens his mouth.
For example; He's running his mouth like an open sewer about how his tax reform will create middle class jobs. So why didn't he implement his tax reform when he had the power to get it passed?
His actions show that it was more important for him to support, push for, and get the Bush tax cuts to the rich extended rather than create jobs for the middle class.
what happened- you really don't know what happened, do you? holy crap! you think the dems almost shut down government?! seriously?!!!! WTF?! get your head examined. do it fast.
Wow
Where you living in another country in June, July, August, September 2011. Its the only way couldn't know about the debt crisis that this country was and is still in. Of course, that is unless you buried your head in the sand.
I'm sure you're aware that the national debt is only $700 billion away from reaching the debt ceiling again. Its being project that our government will shut down in November unless Obama can get another raise in the debt ceiling.
Just think, he qualifies for the Obamacare free death counseling. Since he voted for Obamacare one can only hope he takes full advantage of this free benefit.
But wait a minute, he not only voted for Obamacare, he voted to excluded himself from it because he has the taxpayers footing all his medical expenses instead. Not surprised at his actions, its what one expects from a coward.
Shame he won't get to experience the same Obamacare experience that he rammed down main street Americans throats.
What Happened, again with the false information. Congress is not exempt from the new Health Care plan. Do a little reading for God's sake and quit listening to garbage from the far right. Do a little checking on your own instead of just spitting out buzz words and sayings.
Apparently you aren't aware of the Obamacare exemption list. You need to read Obamacare and stops listening to people who are deceiving you.
death counselling? really? is this an extension of the "deathbeds" garbage? wtf are you drinking? listen- doctors have these kinds of discussions with patients A LOT! The problem was, they didn't get paid by insurance companies for the time spent on these discussions because it wasn't considered 'necessary' by the greedy pricks. dems drafted and passed a law that forces insurance companies to cover this time spent with a patient. there. get it? wake up please, and go educate yourself.
Wow
Don't show your ignorance at what is going on. Look up MSNBC's story about the little know facts about the benefits of Obamacare. It was very informative about many things including the free death counseling.
Spot on buddy,
just like the dems wishing the hurricane hit tampa and killed all the smart reasonable people in this country............ i'm hoping this scum bag who switched his vote to dems to cover his own self centered goals gets what he deserves this 3rd time around............3rd times a charm.
RIP traitor
@what happened
Before you open your mouth again and try and convince anyone else that you know what you are talking about, how about you do a little factchecking of your own first. There is not a single f*cking line in the Affordable Care Act that says Congress and the President are exempt.
http://www.factcheck.org/2009/08/health-care-for-members-of-congress/
http://mediamatters.org/research/2010/03/25/media-falsely-claim-obama-and-staff-are-exempt/162248
http://www.forbes.com/sites/rickungar/2011/12/08/congress-exempted-from-obamacare/
Or you can continue to put your fingers in your ears and stamp your feet while shouting "I don't care about the facts!!"
Chris
Are you a moron. There is an exemption list. Or don't you believe your own liberal media reports?
@what happened
Do you lack the fundamental brain capacity that is required to grasp the fact that at no point did I ever say there wasn't an exemption list?
No, what I did say was that nowhere on that list of exemptions does it say Congress or the President is exempt.
Prove me wrong, smart@ss. If you do, I'll kiss your ass in front of everyone here. I even provided you with 3 links to show you that you had no clue. It's not my fault you were either too lazy or too incompetent to read them. The only 'moron' around is the person making claims that only take a few seconds to prove you wrong.
Feel free to continue the lip flapping. It amuses me.
You gave us a Single Bullet, I guess you did your best, I hope you a full a speedy recovery, I wish this on know one. Good luck!!
Hang in there Mr. Specter. Cancer is no fun and it takes both will power and the right oncologist. Good luck and best wishes.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. To bad that all the Republicans who actually cared for the well being of the country aren't in there anymore. A true Reagan Democrat - he caused me to switch to the Democratic party with his inane comments like "Tax the man behind the tree." No wonder the country is in debt.
3 year BC survivor..DO not mess with me!
OH, and my thanks to President Obama (Fools, refer to him in a proper manner)!
1) My pre-ex BC in not a deal breaker!
2) My well-woman appts are covered!
-US looked like a 4th world country with no medical coverage program-until now!
American serving abroad~
Since you are serving abroad you have not seen the third world war going on at home...you would feel differently about it. And believe me, I served almost 20 years abroad and know the signs of a third world war...Obama has brought one to America's homeland. This November we are going to put an end to it.
I would suggest that you people that think that members of Congress don't pay for their health care Google Congressional health care. You will find out that they do, in fact, pay for their health care. As Verno says, DO A LITTLE RESEARCH, then you won't sound so stupid.
...
I will always fondly remember him wanting to conduct senate hearings into the Patriots - Jets Spygate.
What a guy !!
...
As a NE Patriots fan,I say, bye!!!
And I heard the NCAA is trying real hard to find someone, anyone to de-thrown the SE Conference in Football. Good luck. Roll Tide Roll. Football is ALWAYS on topic.
With everything he has to answer for, he'll fight death 100 times but his day is coming.
Payback is hell, traitor.
I am very pleased I did not have to say what I was really thinking. Thanks. Now on to Reid...
Arlen has been a cancer for a long time. He has a problem with the concept of freedom.
One thing that will happen once specter dies is that we will find out the truth about the John F. Kennedy assassination. He is the last member of the Warren Commission and it is said once all the members are dead and they can't be held accountable that the truth will come out.
Cancer is what you get when you lie in bed with Catholic Trash like Prick Santorum.
Maybe he should pray the cancer away...I mean, science and medicine and all those worldly things are straight from the pit of Hell.
next time you have a thought.......let it go.
Isn't it interesting when some news like this arises the GOP would rather you die and die quickly to save the surplus population money. Says a lot about Republicans these days. I thought Democrats were Atheists, but they're the ones who say they'll pray for all of the sick and down trodden. It is hard to tell the parties apart these days. I'll go with the Obama-Christians who care about their fellowman. Romney could care less. when you become a gazzilionaire it is impossible not to become out of touch with the normal folk.
Mr Specter served 5 terms. Even had he only served ONE term, he would have the same pension and retirement healthcare. He served Pennsylvania faithfully - and it never mattered which party you belonged to. He was a true bi-partisan who figured he worked for the citizens of Pennsylvania - no matter what the party affiliation. He knew what public service was about. He is in mine and my family's prayers.
Jane, thanks for putting it all in perspective. Most comments here are ridiculous and disturbing. A man who has served this country with honor, perhaps one of the last politicians to do so, is battling a life-threatening disease. This isn't about healthcare or politics. All the best, Senator.
I generally like Arlene Specter and wishing him well.
I do struggle with how much healthcare we (the taxpayer through Medicare) should put into someone who has essentially lived a full life. It's one thing to pull the stop out for a 50 year old who may have a family to support, kids to marry off, grandkids to be enjoyed and perhaps in another 5 years a cure might be found for what ails him. But at some point after 80 how much should we do? (Now, if someone over 80 wants to use his own assets in the matter, that is their choice.
It's a message from god. Just let the cancer take you.
...sorry.
Good its not breast cancer because he is over 70 no m-gram
