A new national Republican survey released at the GOP convention in Tampa on Monday found that more than two-thirds of likely voters think the country is still in a recession.
The survey also found that President Barack Obama is in trouble with independents, with only 35 percent of them thinking he deserves a second term, two findings that the party hopes can give them an advantage this November.
Is Mitt Romney ready for his moment with America? Chriz Cillizza, Mark Halperin and John Harris discuss.
The survey of 1,000 likely voters was done by Resurgent Republic, a polling organization founded by Republican strategist Ed Gillespie and pollster Whit Ayres. With Gillespie now working for the Mitt Romney campaign, former Mississippi governor Haley Barbour has stepped in as interim chairman of the group.
Barbour joined Ayres at briefing for reporters Monday in Tampa on the polling data.
The poll, conducted last week, included an oversample of 462 voters in a dozen battleground states, including Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, Florida, Ohio and Wisconsin.
Among the findings:
· The presidential race seems to be in a dead heat, with 46 percent of those interviewed backing Obama and 45 percent backing Romney.
· Romney’s overall unfavorable rating (50 percent) is statistically even with Obama’s (49 percent).
· Battleground voters are divided on Obama’s economic policies, but by wide margins most voters think both the economy and the federal government’s own financial situation are worse today than when Obama took office in 2009.
· The Democrats’ message on Medicare – that Romney and the Republicans are intent on “ending Medicare as we know it” – isn’t persuasive to most voters. Voters are narrowly split on what to do about the future financing of Medicare. But by a small plurality, more voters prefer a Republican message on Medicare (give people under age 55 the choice of joining traditional Medicare or using Medicare dollars to buy a private health insurance plan).
The survey tested a number of statements – one liberal, the other conservative – to see which way the electorate might be leaning.
When given a choice of “fairness” statements, poll respondents overwhelmingly favored a more conservative statement: “Fairness is making sure everyone pays their fair share, and no one gets bailouts, preferential treatment, or special favors from political cronies.”
Only one out of three respondents preferred the more liberal “fairness” definition: “Fairness is making sure the wealthy pay their fair share by increasing their taxes, eliminating loopholes and giving up special deductions.”
Pollster Ayres made a point of stressing that the poll’s sample was tilted in favor of Democratic election turnout: 37 percent Democratic, 30 percent Republican and 30 percent independent.
“It’s really important to understand that that is the largest Democratic advantage in an actual electorate, according to exit polls, going back a dozen years,” Ayres said. “In 2008 when Obama was elected, exit poll interviews indicated the actual electorate was 39 percent Democratic in party identification, 32 percent Republican. In 2004 the exit poll data showed an electorate that was 37 Democratic and 37 percent Republican.”
“I think this is probably the best case scenario for Democrats” – in other words, the most favorable electorate that Obama can hope to expect on Election Day. And yet key indicators in the Resurgent Republic data show Obama in trouble – especially on the economy.
In his assessment of the data, Barbour said Romney is in better shape than Ronald Reagan was when he challenged President Jimmy Carter in 1980.
“At this time in 1980, Reagan was behind by nine (percentage points). So this (a statistically tied race) is very encouraging to me – to see these kind of numbers,” Barbour said.
Barbour added the biggest similarity between Carter and Obama is that “the American people thought the country had gone backwards under Jimmy Carter, and the American people think the country has gone backwards under Barack Obama.”
Barbour also noted that Carter in 1980 had been somewhat weakened by a primary challenge from Sen. Ted Kennedy, while this year Obama “didn’t have a challenge and yet he’s in worse shape than Carter.”

Does anyone with a brain care about the national networks and talking heads, they are all DNC operatives! no one cares what they say, we KNOW the truth! and Obama is a loser, and THAT is the truth! The more these people profess balance the more they stink like a roadkill skunk! they are no better than Bill Maher and Debbie Wassermann Schultz, they should be talking heads!
The only problem with the questions in the polls and the beliefs Americans have are that they are based on lies.
The election could be bought and paid for by advertising that just isn't true.
If you are an independent, go to politifact.com or factcheck.org and spend 30 minutes looking at the truth.
From there, you'll know who to vote for.
The GOP won't protect Medicare, they will only LOOK like they are protecting Medicare all the while they are ending it.
Romney's tax plan adds 5 trillion to the deficit.
In short, the party that got us in this crisis, kept the crisis going via obstruction, and their plan to fix it won't work.
Obama cares about America, Mitt Romney just cares about himself.
Trashy etc. : Yeah, compared to Reid, Pelosi and Franks those guys look like genuises. As to 'teabaggie faggies.' You aren't the brightest lightbulb in the chandelier or else you're getting your talking points confused. You're supposed to state that you are pro-'fag' as a liberal and hate the teaparty because the rhetoric claims that they are anti-gay. Poor child, you need to quit watching all those Obama campaign ads and get some fresh air.
Watch Chris Matthews destroy Priebus on Morning Joe (this morning's program).
It was great.
Matthews was about to cry are you kidding me?
http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-TV/2012/08/27/Chris-Matthews-Screams-At-RNC-Chairman-Romney-Playing-Race-Card
How about Newt calling Matthews out for the racist he is today?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAMLAiYLDS0
Chris Matthews is unhinged. He has completely lost all ability to act professional. I think he sees 0bama losing.
I wonder if the two other viewers felt the same way.
Matthews is garbage.
Matthews is nuts, as in insane. He spits and spews when he talks and shouts when anyone contradicts him. I watched it on youtube, NBC has leaned forward so far that when Obama farts they speak.
Matthews is so deeply in 'man-love' with Obama that it is embarrassing to watch.
The press is a lap dog for the government/military complex. EXACTLY what the liberals of the '60s warned about!
Wow, GOP House sinks the economy (forbidden to reach across the isle) and Republicans have HOPE? Lord...
They should have hope… Republicans have spent the last 3 1/2 years making sure that no jobs or infrastructure bills passed, they played politics with the lives of the American people... Their only hope now isn’t anything other than VOTER SUPPRESSION!!!! The Republican motto is “If we can’t win… CHEAT”
Just like with Dubya, they’ll lie, cheat and steal their way into the White House!!!!! After all, they left money on the table like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid that they didn’t steal from us!!!
"A new national Republican survey"
Lol who gives a crap what the Republicans surveys say.
I love it when Republican pollsters like to compare President Obama with President Carter and Romney with President Reagan.
First: Romney is no Ronald Reagan, even by the most warped stretch of a Tea Party evangelical's imagination. President Reagan had principals and worked to govern the nation. Romney and Ryan are out to destroy the USA.
Second: President Carter had a hostage crises following an Arab oil embargo happen right in the midst of his term in office. Neither had ever happened before or since.
Third: polling has gotten better, but people are pretty smart and can tell what the polling organization wants to hear.
"The press is a lap dog for the government/military complex. EXACTLY what the liberals of the '60s warned about!"
You mean Eisenhower? Wow.
Blaming Obama for a recession that they created. Brilliant!!
Seriously, this country will not survive Romney.
So Eric,
Destroying another human being is a good thing? It's more like trashing people, just because you don't agree.
GOP
It is a slower recovery than the Great Depression, that should be questioned and changed.
"The survey also found that President Barack Obama is in trouble with independents, with only 35 percent of them thinking he deserves a second term"
That could be a serious problem for Obama - here's why;
Recent surveys show that the voters identify themselves as about 34% Republican, 34% Democrat and 32% Independent, and since those that have a Party affiliation typically vote 90% Party Line for President (true in both 2004 & 2008), the potential breakdown would be as follows;
Obama = .9 x .34 (Dems) + .35 x .32 (Ind) + .1 x .34 (Rep) = 45.2% of the vote.
Romney = .9 x .34 (Rep) + .65 x .32 (Ind) + .1 x .34 (Dem) = 54.8% of the vote.
That's an even wider margin than Obama's victory over McCain.
Dirp
Give you a hint. People aren't certain who is conducting a poll. As a result, if they are Democrat, they often will tow the Democrat line. Why they do that is they are smart enough to know that they got a phone call because someone knows they are registered to vote and which party. Like anyone else, they don't want harrassed if they answer a question "wrong".
This is why the networks exit polls are so inaccurated.
They are polling people in earshot of Moveon.org, Union people, and other left groups. Do you really think they want them to know how they really voted?
Trashy Rednecks for Romney "The GOP God....Dick "The Water-boarder" Cheney....famously said "Deficits Don't Matter"!"
Apparently, Obama agrees. Obama's average Deficit has been $1,333 Billion per year (2009 - 2012p), while Bush's average Deficit has been only $251 Billion per year (2001 - 2008).
These figures are from Obama's official 2012 White House Budget - Historical figures plus his projection for 2012.
Roy,
I realize, and most will that you are using Rasmussen. But even if you run the numbers on Gallups current believed mix, Obama still loses big. I believe that is something like 32% Democrat, 28% Republicans and 40% Independent.
Then when you look at what 75% of the polling companies use, and even Gallup's numbers turn out correct, then Obama is actually behind and not ahead as advertised constantly.
You guys can reflect upon all the polls you want. None of the polls favored a black man middle named Hussein to win the nod let along the whitehouse. This thread is about GOP pollsters presenting polls that favor their candidate...... big suprize the polls give the lead to Rmoney.
Polls depend on the honesty of the persons being polled. Persons being polled are not actually pulling the lever election day so they can claim they back one candidate and give a favorable result then either not vote on election day or vote for the opposite person than they did in the poll.
Either way Barack will be using his pole on the first lady for a second term and R-money and R-nay can express their gratitude to their party for nominating such an unelectable candidate in one Mittens R-money and handing the job back to Barack.
I guess the Republicans need to cc the memo to their other GOP pollster:
Rasmussen had Romney ahead by 5 less than a month ago. Ooops! No wonder he has to "reintroduce himself" for about the fifth time this election; or, to put it in realistic terms, Mitt's going to shake the crap out of the Etch-a-Sketch then lie like hell.
Spin a positive out of that RNC sock puppets!
Obama 2012/Romney 1040
Well, I'm not scared. A Republican poll meant to energize a Republican convention. It means nothing. So, the republican says he over- sampled democrats, which is supposed to make people think that the results are even more legit (concerning his conclusion that Romney will win). We're supposed to trust him on this. Yeah, right..... I'd trust that about as much as I would trust Romney on his non-released tax returns.
Now, about Chris Matthews. I watched the video and I think that Chris was the logical one. Sure, he got a little angry, a little testy, but I get the same way when someone is telling me lies to my face. The whole thing just proved that when you pull the republicans off of their talking points and don't allow them to deflect they don't know what to say.
Chris Matthews would have been a good choice for a debate moderator. Too many of these debates have proven useless because the moderators have been too afraid to call the candidates out when they deflect, change the subject, and refuse to answer the question. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: What the moderators need are those hand-held air-horns so that when a candidate tries to dodge the question they can get blasted in the face with that noise, and then they forfeit the rest of their time.
Doesn't everyone agree that the debates have deteriorated into a series of back and forth sound-bites, with no questions really being answered?
Chris Matthews as a moderator? The man so in love with Obama that his leg tingles? Please. All he knows is to toss out something inflammatory and then out-shout and talk over anyone foolish enough to go on his 'show.' You must revel in bias, strawman arguments and prejudice.
Hell, even the hosts of 'Morning Joe' were embarrassed of Matthews. The man is a nut.
But the all around failed Leadership in the White House gives the GOP even more Hope!
I don't see how the failed leadership of the Bush White House would give the GOP hope - or give anyone else hope, either.
Harbinger, you do know you cant just start a calendar over don't you.
You have to buy a new one every year.
The failed leadership was the GOP. Boehner walked away from the 4 trillion dollar deal that would have avoided the downgrade.
The GOP has obstructed all of Obama's jobs bills and attempts at extending jobless claims. If the GOP had passed Obama's jobs bills unemployment would be lower than 8% right now.
Well, since the libs can't support Obama's track record the only recourse they have is 'blame Bush,' Now, where is Bush on the ticket? I promise I will not vote for Bush this election cycle.
It wasn't a jobs bill, it was a spending bill. We already saw how shovel ready the jobs were last time he tried his "jobs bill."
Republican jobs bills don't cost tax payers anything and don't put us further into debt. The trick is getting the government out of the way of the people and allow the free market to create real jobs that create real capital rather than just pushing the same tax money around in a Keynesian cycle every year.
Let's face it...we've elected two bozos in a row for POTUS.
Really ? You SMUG ASS Teatards... Obama has had a QUITE IMPRESSIVE list of accomplishments. The reason this country is not PROGRESSING as planned is 100% due to RIGHTWING OBSTRUCTIONISM. PERIOD.
Read it and weep you bunch of liars and propagandists.
What has Obama Done? Here Are 194 Accomplishments! With Citations!
http://pleasecutthecrap.typepad.com/main/what-has-obama-done-since-january-20-2009.html
Actually, we've elected three less-than-sterling presidents in a row. If you think about it, when was the last time that a truly gifted and qualified person ran for office? We keep having to chose the lesser-of-evils and frankly that is beyond tiresome. One begins to think that the elections and the process are rigged.
You get the lesser evil when partisans are searching though candidates trashcans, looking in their windows, following their kids, make fun of their spouses, and spend hours twisting whatever they have said, written or done since that had their first poop in a diaper.
Exactly......all around meaning the congress and judiciary. they are around the whitehouse.
Obama is going to be re elected and all you honey boo boo child/ swamp people/ call of the wildman/ gator boys/ hillbilly handfishin walmart shopping republicans that are so grossly uneducated to know you are voting for Rmoney so he can cut off your welfare checks need to turn off the tv and get a job just incase Obama loses.
I am tired of paying high taxes to support you broke teabillies so you can bite the hand that is feeding you and trying to give you healthcare so you can go to the dentist to get that last tooth in your mouth cleaned.
I am so glad honey boo boo child has a tv show so the world can see the true face of the GOP. Bunch of okie noodlin, honey boo booin, gator wrasslin trailer trash that barely scrapes by but still sees themselves the same as the elite in the GOP just because you are white.
I am black and have more in common with them than you do because I am among the Top 5% earners. I own property and have investment income that needs protection from you low life bottom dwelling catfish noodling, gator shootin, belly talking triple chin wife havin honey boo boo child wal mart shopping uneducated meth heads.
My hope is that if you must suffer a rape, it be legitimate so no more of you are born to this world.
My goodness, a bigot, a racist and prejudiced to boot. A fascinating rant, racist rant to be precise. Interesting, and here I thought only conservatives were racist. Great with the stereotyping as well, notable that there was no mentioning the gangstas, the hood, the dope dealers, the baby mama's and the welfare drones. Sad to be so filled with hate and anger.
Unemployment in the private sector is way below 7%. The elevated nuber is caused by the Republicans who are firing State and local union members right and left as they do their part to make Obama look bad. Then spend millions having their trolls infest the web with their lies. All you have to do is go on line and read and you will find you are being had by the Koch bros and the right wing Supreme court.
My goodness, a bigot, a racist and prejudiced to boot.
Nope that was a republican troll posting a bunch of crap so other trolls can jump on and deflect the seed. Common way you people do things and probably you posted it yourself with one of your other logins.
Nothing Funnier than someone posting Politico as Gospel...Ha, Ha, HA
Nothing seems more out of context, then putting Obama and leadership in the same sentence. Failure is a word that is far more accurate.
Obama accomplishments:
1) Unemployment at 7.8% when he took office. Almost 4 years later STILL above 8% at 8.3% with projections it is going UP!!
2) GDP stagnant at below 2% in the last quarter (2nd Quarter 2012). Long term average is 3.3%
3) 1 in 7 now on Food Stamps. Highest percent since program was started
4) 1 in 6 in Poverty. Highest since the 70's
5) Lowest labor participation rate since the 70's
6) Highest percent of unemployed 6 months or more since the Great Depression
7) Added $6 TRILLION in debt in less than 4 years. On average per day Obama added about THREE TIMES the debt as George Bush did.
Looking at the facts this president has been a clear failure and is understandable why the Obama administration is trying to deflect the economy and debt as the talking points. But the people cannot be fooled. They know the economy and debt are the most important topics of this election and abortion, contraception, and condoms cannot deflect from that.
So, how is that whole "Hopey Changey" thing working out for you now?
Aside from this polling data coming from a clearly biased source...
Unfortunately it appears the LIES about Medicare have gotten some traction with seniors -- Which is amazing since everyone knows Republicans have NEVER supported Medicare.
As for the racist dog whistles in regard to LIES about work and welfare, etc., those who are undecided may be influenced by this as well. Once again, this is amazing since every fact checker and the press has called this a blatant LIE.
Let's hope the electorate is more intelligent than this. Romney/Ryan - They aren't in it for you.
Being a Boomer you all should know. Yes there is 70 million of us, but we are all 60 and older. Most of the Boomers will be gone in 30 years. Right when the system is suppose break because of us. Come on good health or not most won't make 90.
$120 Trillion of unfunded liabilities and $16Trillion national debt. Yes, thanks a lot baby boomers.
Baby boomers wiped your sh!tty little butt, they worked and their parents worked and they paid into the system. Perhaps you should focus your ire at the politicans who have held office and power for many generations. Think your parents had any control over Washington? Think they have that control now? Get real here.
A generation of spoiled brats that just want there bennies. Go back to Atlantic city and waste your retirement in the slot machine and complain about health care cost.
You talking about yourself? The generation of spoiled brats, that is. Well, if a baby boomer raised you and you turned out to be a spoilt brat with gimme freebies as a mantra, then yes, bad baby boomers.
(A political parody song by Bruce-1628250, sung to the tune of "I Wish I Were an Oscar Mayer Wiener!")
Gop Agenda: More Jobs!!!... End of story...Not talking points.
Not really sure ... The Dems have been the MAJORITY FOR 6 YEARS!!
6 YEARS!!! and they want to FIRE the minority..... Really?
Mike, you realize the GOP is the majority in the House, no?
Mike - You seem confused. Where's the six years thing coming from?
Being majority in the House does not make you the Majority.
1. President
2. Senate
3 House
All make up the majority
The last two years of the Bush Presidency ... The Dems owned the House and Senate .... Repubs owned Presidency .
the first two years of the Obama Presidency
Democrats owned President , Senate and House
Last two years
the Democrats owned Senate and Presidency... Repubs owned House
Those are the checks and Balances of Power. The House is coveted because they set the agenda...
The House may set the agenda, but the Senate and the Presidency has to endorse it to make it come into being.
Yep...the Senate and House makes Congress. Each holds 50 percent . Obama does a lot of talking how terrible Congress is ...So does everybody know that he is including his own Party for his failures also? OR...Does this President need Absolute Super Majority to get things done... If that is the case we need to change the Constitution and move to a One Party system. Many other Presidents were able to figure out a way to Lead with a two Party system...Clinton did an excellent job ...He did that all while he was in the spot light for his Monica Lewinsky affair......WHY CANT OBAMA BE A LEADER?
So if we're in a recession -- what's the Republican plans to get us out of it? More tax cuts for the richest of the rich combined with more deregulation --- the same things that caused in in the first place. Remember -- this recession started in mid 2005 and evolved into a near depression by 2008. We have made a little progress in digging our way out of it. Going back to the policies of George W. Bush is total insanity. It makes about as much sense as smoking to cure lung cancer.
Couldn't agree more. There is no plan other than to say tough luck to the poor and handing more money to the rich to "trickle" down on the rest of us.
Good Points Charlie - The Republicans deny the facts about 8 years of Republican leadership straight into the sh*t hole. Like the two wars Bush started and then cut taxes at the same time, and then passed Medicare Part D and cut taxes more. Yeh we went from a pretty good economy and a balanced budget to a pile of sh*t in about 8 years. If the red neck Republicans get Romney elected, they deserve everything they're going get. The rest of us don't.
I'd much prefer trickle down wealth than trickle up poverty, which is what Obama offers.
Okay, everything Bush did I didn't agree with. (Especially his education
agenda). But, the Financial Crisis was something that was put in play long
before Bush took office. In 1995 Clinton loosened housing rules by rewriting
the Community Reinvestment Act, which put added pressure on banks to lend in low-income neighborhoods. Then, the Republicans, led by CLINTON, came up with repelling the Glass/Segal Act. This allowed banks to a model of “originate to distribute” model for underwriting home loans. Basically, in the old days, banks would make mortgages in house and keep them on their books. Because they held onto the loans they made, stringent
guidelines were put in place to ensure quality loans were written. After all,
if something went wrong with the loans, they’d be accountable. And they’d loselots of money.
The “originate todistribute model,” allowed banks and lenders to pass the risk onto investors, and thereby loosen guidelines. The result was casual underwriting, less oversight, and more aggressive financing, which ultimately led to a lot of bad loans being made. WHICH LED TO THE FINANCIAL CRISIS. I don’t care if you don’t believe me…..look it up…..if you have ½ a brain…you will come to the same conclusion……BOTH DEMO’S AND REPBUS MESSED IT UP!
Trickle up poverty is the result of supply side economics. Always has been -- always will. The patters is as predictable as the seasons. The rich get richer, the middle class shrinks, the poor get poorer. Then comes massive speculation and that's followed by a the economic crash. Then it takes from 10 to 15 years to dig out from under it. It happened in the late 1800s, in 1929 and in 2008. And if Romney wins, all it will do is prolong the agony.
Prolong the agony? So instead vote for Obama so that he can kill us quicker? Dig the hole deeper? Noticed that Wall Street and the mega-corporations are doing great under Holder's we won't prosecute Wall Street and Banker crimes. Sheesh, Obama is Bush and you all still want him? Really? Guess you really want to experience economic collapse in warp speed.
I am guessing speed up! Watch out for that fast train coming down the track!
Visions of Dr. Strangelove come to mind.....yeehaw and ride that bomb on down...
If you fail, you try again. If you fail again, you try again. And so on. Sooner or later, it will succeed. It has to. Maybe not in our lifetimes, but someday it will. Of course I'm talking about the GOP's "trickle down" economics model. Romney wants to try again.
Seems you are a mite confused. Obama is currently the president, he stated that he should be re-elected because he needed to improve his learning curve. Obama's campaign motto is 're-elect me, I promise I'll do a better job.' Trickle up, trickle down, doesn't matter, the facts are real simple, we cannot afford four more years of Obama's 'on the job training.'
All I see is lot of false rhetoric and party blaming.
When are you going to realise that it is corrupt and inefficient big government that is creating the problems.
Reagan and Clinton knew what to do and we had the biggest economic boom in US history and it all went south afterwards.
Fannie and Freddie caused the economic mess in September 2008 and yes the predatory lending contributed but was allowed to slide by Fannie and Freddie.
the government and industry knew there would be toxic assets but made a lot of false assumptions and the amount of foreclosures was 10 fold the numbers estimated on the assumptions.
Romney,s tax plan is taking a few percentage points off the current tax rates- meaning 10$ goes to 8%, 15% goes to 10%, 18% goes to 15%, and ending with a top rate of 28% for incomes above $388,000. So this exposes the lie of Romney for the rich and not the middle class.
Romney is also doing away with the 15% capital gains tax for earners below $200.000 which will give boost for the middle class to save more for retirement.
Romney also has excellent plans for health care and that can be found at Kaiser Health news- article, Romney on health care.
I cant believe that many of you are buying into the lies and false data from the media and false assumptions.
the biased center for tax policy is a good example of this inaccurate information. even the GAO and CBO cannot estimate the outcome of Romney,s policy.
The only thing they can put out is that when Reagan and Clinton cut rates and loopholes, revenues increased substantially. and yes revenues increased modestly with GWB but were cancelled out with the conflicts and social programs.
It was the reckless policies of Bush that gave us Scott Walker, Paul Ryan, etc. these fiscal responsible republicans are replacing the establishment republicans and that is still going on with the current primaries.
The movement to go back to what made this country great- smaller and limited government giving power back to the states and its people as stated in the constitution.
Destroying corporate capitalism and getting back to a free market capital society. this means no more protecting the interest and dominance of corrupt public sector unions, green energy, oil and gas, wall street, etc.
Republicans and Democrats are guilty of this Marxist concept and it needs to stop.
Nope!
wikipedia - Subprime mortgage crisis:
The ratio of lower-quality subprime mortgages originated rose from the historical 8% or lower range to approximately 20% from 2004-2006
From a speech by George W. Bush in 2002, pushing the ADDI. He described the actions his administartion had already taken to help minority homeowners:
The Administration also implemented a hybrid Adjustable Rate Mortgage (ARM) product that makes it easier for new homebuyers to stay in their homes in the first few years.
Substantially increasing, by at least $440 billion, the financial commitment made by the government-sponsored enterprises involved in the secondary mortgage market specifically targeted toward the minority market.
Both ARMs and the secondary mortgage market were indicted as major factors by most economists in the mortgage meltdown.
All legislation is documented on government websites. Look this one up; it is quite interesting:
American Dream Downpayment Initiative (ADDI) - signed into law on Dec 16, 2003.
Sponsor: Sen. Wayne Allard [R-CO]
Co-sponsors: Samuel Brownback [R-KS]; Conrad Burns [R-MT]; Ben Campbell [R-CO]; Michael Crapo [R-ID]; Michael Enzi [R-WY]; Charles Hagel [R-NE]; Lisa Murkowski [R-AK]; Richard Santorum [R-PA]; Jefferson Sessions [R-AL]
Note that there was not one Democrat co-sponsoring this bill. The bill was sponsored by a Republican, co-sponsored only by other Republicans, passed by a Republican majority in the House and Senate and signed into law by a Republican president.
It reduced the minimum downpayment for all GSE (fannie Mae, Freddi Mac and FHA) loans to 3%.
From the bipartisan Congressional report by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on the subprime mortgage crisis released in 2009 (summary here: http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=32615):
• Lower down-payments led to housing prices that outpaced income growth: Once government-sponsored efforts to decrease down payments spread to the wider market, home prices became increasingly untethered from any kind of demand limited by borrowers’ ability to pay. Instead, borrowers could just make smaller down payments and take on higher debt, allowing home prices to continue their unrestrained rise. (p. 11)
• The Government Sponsored Enterprises led the way into the housing crisis: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were leaders in risky mortgage lending. According to an analysis presented to the Committee, between 2002 and 2007, Fannie and Freddie purchased $1.9 trillion of mortgages made to borrowers with credit scores below 660, one of the definitions of “subprime” used by federal banking regulators. This represents over 54% of all such mortgages purchased during those years. (p.24)
Nope, this was a Republican recession!
Hah! That's pretty funny.
EEngineer: Good research on the ADDI, and I love a good G. W. Buffoon quote (worth re-posting):
If everybody reads FAE2010 post ..they will learn a lot. That is exactly what started the Housing bubble process... Both Clinton and Bush are to Blame. Both parties all had their hands in it.
This is the problem..... Both parties broke the system.... We need a Leader and not "finger Pointer" . Both Parties need to come together and fix the problem..... Obama ...failed miserably in bringing this Country together...to fix the problem. He was more divisive and polarizing...than he was bringing both sides together. I am pretty sure when Obama rammed Health Care down our throats...he pretty muchh alienated the other side. That is not Leading...
Revisionist history seems to have forgotten Carter, the man who created the Community Reinvestment Act. Carter started that little ball rolling, not Clinton or Bush. The Bush administration approached Congress many times over concerns about the possible crisis brewing in Freddie/Fannie and Barney Franks told them to take a hike, Barney had his boyfriend working there and his good buddy Franklin Raines raiding it to the tune of millions.
If you want to focus ire, at least aim in the right direction.
You seemed to have conveniently left out the role that HUD played during the Clinton administration when then Coumo threaten banks that didn't comply with issuing loans to minorities. Coumo stated that he didn't care if Bank of America went broke. Seemed to have gotten his wish.
Timing! It is all about timing!
CRA - also known as Housing and Community Development Act of 1977 was enacted in 1977. Why, then would it take 30 years to cause problems?
No, the biggest problem in the mortgage crisis was sub-prime loans. Did you even read the quote from Wikipedia above? The percentage of sub-prime loans had been about 8% for years! Suddenly, in the space of 2 years (2004-2006), it jumped to 20%! Why?
Funny... that's not how Mike Oxley remembers it. You know Oxley, right? Staunch Republican and hardly a flaming liberal.
From an article in Financial Times (you'll have to Google "Oxley hits back at ideologues" because their silly website won't allow linking to an article):
"The critics have forgotten that the House passed a GSE reform bill in 2005 that could well have prevented the current crisis," says Mr Oxley, now vice-chairman of
Nasdaq.
He fumes about the criticism of his House colleagues. "All the handwringing and bedwetting is going on without remembering how the House stepped up on this," he says. "What did we get from the White House? We got a one-finger salute."
The House bill, the 2005 Federal Housing Finance Reform Act, would have created a stronger regulator with new powers to increase capital at Fannie and Freddie, to limit their portfolios and to deal with the possibility of receivership.
Mr Oxley reached out to Barney Frank, then the ranking Democrat on the committee and now its chairman, to secure support on the other side of the aisle. But after winning bipartisan support in the House, where the bill passed by 331 to 90 votes, the legislation lacked a champion in the Senate and faced hostility from the Bush administration.
Adamant that the only solution to the problems posed by Fannie and Freddie was their privatisation, the White House attacked the bill. Mr Greenspan also weighed in, saying that the House legislation was worse than no bill at all.
"We missed a golden opportunity that would have avoided a lot of the problems we're facing now, if we hadn't had such a firm ideological position at the White House and the Treasury and the Fed," Mr Oxley says.
Nope, sorry, Bush did nothing. Others (including Barney Frank) tried to do something and Bush shut them down.
How is that a Conservative statement?
That is exactly what President Obama said!
No, thats what 0bama does.
Here's what Obama said:
“The problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for the first 42 presidents – #43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back — $30,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s unpatriotic.”.
-Barak Hussein Obama
“today I’m pledging to cut the deficit we inherited in half by the end of my first term in office. This will not be easy. It will require us to make difficult decisions and face challenges we’ve long neglected. But I refuse to leave our children with a debt that they cannot repay — and that means taking responsibility right now, in this administration, for getting our spending under control.”
-Barak Hussein Obama
Failed POTUS
No Steven B.... HE did not fail us. CONGRESS failed us, and most importantly it was the REPUBLICANS in Congress that failed us w/their shameful and deliberate obstructionism. If they weren't the immoral, hateful, bigoted, conscience-devoid SLUGS that they are and REALLY WANTED to see this country succeed... which they DIDN'T... all they wanted to do was make a President and his policies FAIL..... they wouldn't have INTENTIONALY SABOTAGED him every step of the way. Obama would have most likely achieved all of the goals he set and promised us. Pretty hard thing to do when you've got people knifing you in the back instead of giving you a hand.
Obama gets the credit and none of the blame, as usual. He had a majority in the House, the Senate and all those bits of wonderful legislation like Obamacare passed without any republican votes. Take away his checkbook, we can't afford his largesse and freebies anymore. Those domestic and foreign freebies.
He failed. You lefties will not admit it but it does not change the truth.
Worst president ever.
Blame whoever you want but sane rational people know who it really is.
We know from experience obama cant fix this mess hes just ignored jobless, economy.and housing ,but has focused on the GAY RIGHTS AND IN THE MILITARY! Please show me how this helps with gas ,food and jobs..he forgot to be focused! He has no clue and will not run on his terrible record on whats important!
And what have the RETHUGLITARDS done to help the economy and produce jobs when for the last 4 yrs their ENTIRE agenda, besides trying to make Obama fail, was to regulate women's reproductive systems by passing like 500+ laws for asinine RELIGIOUS BASED ideas like "personhood" and attack our right to safe and legal abortion, but yet not ONE jobs bill and try to force their warped and hateful religious agenda into government against the CONSTITUTION and try to get laws passed to make the rich richer and the poor slaves and deny women every right they've fought for over the last 100 yrs ?
In case you missed it, President Obama came into office and got right to the Recovery Act (stimulus) that went to every state and did create and save jobs, approximately three million or more. He did this at a very critical time when America was in the crisis of the banks failing, housing market meltdown and a crisis of job losses. All Senate republicans were against this with the exception of two lovely republican women in the Senate and Brown, who was influenced by MA voters. President Obama has put forth jobs bills and infrastructure bills that the GOP filibustered which means nothing moves forward. Recently republicans did agree to infrastructure legislation which President Obama signed into law. This happened because of the press writing about the GOP obstructing and doing nothing to help the country. They must have really been getting some heat because they sure did nothing willingly to help Americans who are not wealthy.
taxweary.
He just divided the country. He is the worst ever.
Man I hated the radical right long before Obama.
And sorry, as far as the worst ever that still belongs to W.
Gemini618 your right not a damn thing because any of their proposals conveniently died in Harry Reid's Senate.
I wouldn't put much faith in a poll conducted by a political party. When I get polled and I can tell the polster is not really taking a poll but trying to convince me to vote his way by using phrases such as "If you knew this would this make you more or less likely to vote for or against. . . I know it's not a real poll so I hang up. Now when anyone starts to poll me I tell them how I will vote, Straight Democratic. I will never vote for another Republican again and I used to vote Straight Republican. Never more quoth the Raven. I've gotten wise to the ways of the Repuglican party and it stinks.
Both sides fail to inspire. In the primary - smaller government, lower taxes, less regulation, less illigals, etc. Makes me lather for a republican candidate..... In the general - it all goes away. No cuts to medicare and a bigger military...... In the governing - the system just gets bigger and bigger and bigger. Romney is playing the tradional republican to a t. He ain't gonna win unless he can inspire grass roots support that he isn't just another giveaway artist like we have now .
From here until the election most polls won't reveal the accuracy of a blind man using a sling shot. They'll be used as vote drivers for the dunces. Always been pretty much that way at any time during a campaign. They can, and often do, drive who some vote for though.
Funny ludvig, I personally tell pollsters I don't have an opinion, and they've called me a number of times.
Truth is, I'm voting Romney.
Truth is Romney is the only choice we have for America
Funny ludvig, I personally tell pollsters I don't have an opinion, and they've called me a number of times.
Truth is, I'm voting Obama.
WE ARE still in a recession!.............THEY just don't know it!
you take away that 1 trillion in extra juice each year the feds spend over the intake and this economy is a shriveled prune. It adds several percentage points to gdp. They will run out of other peoples money eventually. The dem's think just because you spend an extra trillion per year and gdp is above zero the economy is growing. Ha ha. Too funny. However, nit has not demostrated he is gonna be any better than an empty suit guided by insiders; until he does; obama is likely to win. Regardless of the situation.
The President will handily beat Romney.
Gee, why is that? Because Bush doubled our national debt in 8 years? Because Bush spent more than $1T on a war that benefited only Halliburton (while Halliburton was paying our vice-president more than 100K per year while he was VP??). Because Bush trashed the American economy trying to provide every illegal American with a home loan to guarantee a Republican voting base?
Yeah, we need to return to that! Yeah, we need more of the same tax cut and spend politics of the Republican party.
But the repubs think that as long as the economy doesn't crash (it did!) and every gets richer (well, Halliburton did!) well, it finally does crash, it must be Obama's fault! (it isn't).
Y'all gotta come up with a better plan! Here's a hint! Romney/Ryan doesn't have one!
Harbinger: "No one can get preferential treatment, isn't that exactly what Obama says"?
Really, like exemptions from ACA for unions and corporations that donate to DNC? Like federal QE money for projects that goes overwhelming to blue states? Careful what you quote from the president, his actions are opposite of his rhetoric. The man simply is not doing his job well. Honestly, you can say we're heading in the right direction economically? Really, with a projected 22 trillion in expected debt if Obama is re-elected. Wow... keep believing the hype, because that's all it ever was.
Yes, creating opportunities for ALL Americans is exactly what President Obama says!
If you ever listened to what he says, and not just post FOX talking points, you would be aware of that!
You didn't catch the parts where he tells you that you can't do anything without the government apparently. You didn't build your business and all those folks benefiting from his 'talking points' have been union bosses, campaign bundlers, illegal aliens, Mexicans in Mexico, welfare recepients, illegal arms smugglers, drug dealers, human traffickers, and radical Islamics like the Muslim Brotherhood.
Here's what Obama said:
“I am told that Governor Romney’s new running mate, Paul Ryan, might be around Iowa the next few days,” he said while in Council Bluffs, Iowa. “He is one of the leaders of Congress standing in the way. So if you happen to see Congressman Ryan, tell him how important this farm bill is to Iowa and our rural communities.”
House passed bill on August 2, 2012 (Paul Ryan voted yes)
The American automobile industry has come roaring back…So now I want to say what we did with the auto industry, we can do it in manufacturing across America. Let’s make sure advanced, high-tech manufacturing jobs take root here, not in China. And that means supporting investment here. Governor Romney … invested in companies that were called ‘pioneers’ of outsourcing. I don’t want to outsource. I want to insource.

You do understand the disconnect between what he says and what he does. His supporters, on the other hand, don't have that capacity. The Cult of Personality in effect. They will support and defend him because they are emotionally attached to him and he relies on that. That is utterly insane!

Wouldn't that be a fascist thing to do, shut down all dissenting opinions?

what fix would that be? another 1 trillion per year in wasted spending. 2 trillion per year in deficit? End up like greece. Maybe raise taxes on those rich folks 4%.......and take in a whole 50 billion more while congress gives them a 10 percent loophole Wow. That is really gonna help a lot. Obama is a master of doing nothing all day everyday. Laziest president of all time.
Conveniently leaving out 2007-2009.
What's that expression about a half truth is a whole lie?
Democrats work for the good of all Americans. Republicans are extreme in extreme ways that would harm women, gays and the poor. But they always are for tax cuts for themselves and other millionaires and billionaires. Get a clue Democrats can be wealthy and do what is right. Republicans can not be wealthy and do the right thing. The reasonable and responsible republicans are not being elected by the right wing wackos that Fox produces for more billionaires to be richer and more people to be poorer.
There, ladies and gentlemen is a perfect example of brainwashing. Are you capable of thinking for yourself, researching and looking into facts rather than party rhetoric? The democrats are God, apparently. Memorizing and regurgitating spoonfed talking points is not the mark of an informed mind.
Maybe a slight rewording would help you to understand.
Republican policies are:
Those are all well-documented Republican policies, not "spoonfed talking points". They documented all of it in the party platform on Monday in Tampa.
Democrats work for the good of all Americans? Please, don't be stupid. Democrats work to get elected to suck off the public trough. Anti-poor, please, explain that in detail, not using Obama rhetoric. 50% of Americans pay no federal taxes and get money back even though they don't pay taxes. What do you call that? Equality?
The conservative Christians oppose gay marriage and abortion, they aren't the entire rank and file of republicans. I agree with your take on abortions, on that issue the republicans are going to lose the elections.
When the median income is $36,000, so half the country makes barely enough to get by, yes I think it's fair. Note that the 50% includes retirees collecting Social Security.
I think all Americans should have the right to pay their bills first.
But the thing is, the Romney tax plan would shift more of the burden of taxes onto the poor, according to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center.
Job numbers were already falling in 2007. In fact, at the end of 2007, Bush created exactly 1.1M jobs - in the next year, the economy would lose 3.6M jobs and unemployment would soar to 7.8%.
What a record to be proud of!! But that's OK, pick and choose your numbers. Ignore the failures that occur and just tout the (minimal) successes. You do realize that by this point in Clinton's two terms, he had created 11 million jobs, don't you? With no subsequent loss of 8 million jobs! But don't let any facts distartct you...
He's not lazy when he's campaigning, when he's not playing golf he's campaigning.
"He's not lazy when he's campaigning, when he's not playing golf he's campaigning."
Even though it's half as much as his predecessor...
What, the campaigning or the golf? Betcha he's set the record on continuous campaigning between golfing.
Golf. Bush played far more often, and took twice as much vacation time as Obama.
And still you complain. Obama isn't lazy, he is industrious when it comes to campaigning. Note that his coffers aren't as full nor his donations as generous as they were four years ago. Interesting.
I wasn't complaining. I was just correcting the issues that you got wrong by parroting your Republican talking points, that's all.
Bush was in office for eight years, Obama has done all that in less than four years. Those four additional years of Bush vs. Obama comparisons are often ignored in the bashing of Bush to defend Obama. Obama has increased the debt more, golfed more and campaigned more in less than four years than Bush managed in eight years.
Not true. On average, Obama has taken off less time per year than Bush did, played golf less often per year than Bush and campaigned no more than Bush did in 2004.
The Federal budget has remained within a couple percent of where Bush left it in 2008, and taxes have been lowered. As a result, deficits remain about the same per year (about $1.2 trillian) as they were when Bush left office.
It's true that the national debt has climbed by 50% since Obama took office. But before that, Bush doubled it. Oh, and he cut taxes. Brilliant.
I was a middle income wage earner in the housing industry. I do not agree with the talking heads that say Romney is good only for the wealthy. I would expect those on the government dole would think such things. But the spend thrift President has tripled our debt so that fewer Americans can afford to buy a home or renovate. It is not the poor that pay wages it is rather the middle class and wealthy Americans. They are the people that drive this economy. Obama and his Dems have tanked this economy. (See Charlie-1915998 posts it is right on the mark concerning the President's policies)
You can't blame the last three years on Bush. The economy since Obama came to office is worst not better. America gambled on a smooth talking no body from Illinois and we are poorer for it. I will take a business leader any time over a liberal ideologue.
We are not better off as the result of President Obama's economic policies.
Federal spending has not significantly increased since Bush was in office.
Look it up. Total annual budget has been basically flat give or take a couple percent.
No need to talk like a child abut it. It's just a simple fact.
That may be your opinion, but we will see the exact same thing that happened with Bush with Romney. That is all there will be. Romney is a one percenter making $57,000 a day on his investments and he will do more and more for other one percenters that will harm more and more average Americans. Fix Medicare means in republican speak ruin it. Fix Social Security in republican speak means ruining it. Just like the way republicans are ruining public education, ruining public agencies with privatization. Medicare and Social Security will be gone and that will be a win for the GOP that never gave a darn for helping people survive in their senior years.
I can blame the last three years of obstruction, opposition and agenda against compromise by republicans in the government, the Senate especially. It is a fact that they have outdone themselves with filibusters, more than any in the history of our country. It came down to the fact that there were not 60 Democrats and there was a right wing agenda against success for the country or for President Obama. When republicans think that way they really are anti-American and treasonous toward the people of this country.
Vicki... When do you blame lack of Leadership? A President is elected to Lead. Whether it is a party that is in power or not. Why do you think things will change when Obama is elected again? The House will still be Republican unless there is an event. Clinton could lead both sides of the Aisle. Quit making excuses for a President that does not have the ability to Lead. The other side does not respect President Obama ... They may have disagreed with other Presidents ...but this one they do not respct . Pointing fingers and blaming others for the Country's problems is not LEADING.
Leadership without authority can only accomplish so much. Republicans can't even lead themselves these days, so expecting them to take direction from the leader of the opposition is completely unrealistic, IMHO.
I think Obama has done what he could, and accomplished a hell of a lot given the hand he was dealt, and the lunacy that has overtaken the Republican party.
Tim...Other Presidents were able to lead with two Parties.Clinton did a hell of job especially considering he was dealing with B.S Monica Lewinsky Scandle. You have to ask yourself the question as to why this President does not Lead. I dont think he ever got the other sides Respect. When he had his Super Majority he alienated the other side. He can only Lead with a Super Majority. If thats the case we need to change the Constitution and and go to a one PARTY system.
From startribune.com:
"A typical family making $50,000 a year has seen their taxes cut by $3,600 over the last four years, $800 in each of 2009 and 2010 due to the Making Work Pay tax credit and $1,000 in each of 2011 and 2012 due to the payroll tax cut."
The payroll tax provisions resulted in a 2 percentage point reduction in payroll taxes, or as much as $2,200 for 160 million workers.
And, of course, that makes you a bare faced righty liar!
You must remember that from the very beginning Mitt Romney, was the "ANYONE BUT" default candidate of the Republican Party.
During the Republican Primaries the most frequent description of the votes cast by Republican voters were for "Anyone BUT Romney!"
Of all the candidates in the Republican Primary, ...
(that is Snow Whitey and her 7 Dwarves: Michele Bachmann along with Ron Paul, Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Job Hunstman, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and finally Mitt Romney)
... at one time or other, during the Republican Primaries, polls showed one or the other of them as the front runner always ahead of Mitt Romney. The majority Republican voter sentiment was always "Anyone BUT Romney!"
It wasn't really until after most of them "suspended" their campaigns that Romney finally became the leading candidate, but only by virtue of the fact that he outlasted by out-spending the rest. Mitt Romney was the default candidate left at the end of the bloody gauntlet.
Romney was simply the sole survivor of one of the most NEGATIVE intra-party campaigns anyone has ever seen in modern American politics. He wasn't the winner. Romney was simply the last survivor. He was what was left, after all the others had been beaten-up like; a gay blond prep student who was thrown down on the floor and had his hair cut off by the big bad bully. Guess who the big bad DEFAULT bully CANDIDATE was? Yes, that would be
Mitt "ANYONE BUT" Romney
Now that it has been established that Mitt Romney is the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party, right here on these very blogs more often than not you will see the conservative Republicans advertise --- "Anyone But Obama!" far more frequently than they post anything at all like or even close to a "Romney 2012".
Why do they prefer ANYONE (but Obama), over "Romney 2012"?
Simple!
Because they still DO NOT LIKE Mitt Romney. They just feel they are stuck with him. And, apparently they are.
A candidate who has that little real support, from his own party, doesn't stand a snowball's chance on the Sun of beating an incumbent President who is loved and respected by the vast majority of his party, including African Americans who are predominantly Democrats, as well as the majority of clear thinking independent non-partisan swing voters of all races, creeds and colors!
With racist pigs like Bachman screeching about "taking back" what she calls "our" country (vs. everyone else's), all thinking voters should avoid the Republicans like the plague.
Folks all ya Heard from da TeaBilly’s for the past few years is:
We want our Country Back.
We Cleaned up or Rally really Nice.
Now all ya hear is:
Anybody but Obama.
It Shows ya how they have no Leadership, Direction, Solutions or Substance and have Lowered all Expectations and Standards.
You Bet Cha….Fer Sure.
I once was a Republican, but changed when Karl Rove began his smear against Senator McCain in the GWB election. Republicans always are judgemental whether it is law or the Bible; the problem is that most laws are passed by the privileged to oppress the under-privileged. Just look at our tax law that favors the 1% and corporations over the 99%. How many of you 99ers are going to flip out over fair treatment for the other 99ers just because they are not white? The Republican Party is a magnet for all the racists in America. All you moderate Republicans who are not racist nor cynics, the Democrat Party has a place for you, and you will not be threatened with excommunication if you debate reasonable conservative options. The brown-coloreds, whether Hispanic, Mid-Eastern, Asian will be major business owners as well as educated laborers, and will have an affiliation for the Democrat Party which stood by them as they fought for their place in America. When we have a nation of fair play where everyone plays by the same rules, everyone benefits. President Obama is your option. Join with us in a nation that is inclusive and not the one that is fighting to preserve the privilege of the 1%. I don't aways agree with everything, but I'm sure not going to give up my independence to belong to a narrow minded, anti-progress right-wing party that places religious bigotry before opportunity and freedom. If you want to be a racist, join the Republican Party; if you have a semblance of compassion for other people, join the Democrat Party and advocate for your interests. The Democrats can compromise to reach consensus on many issues.
Tracy, You don't get it. A dead snake would stand a much better chance of beating Obama, but you are not running a dead snake are you? No! You're stuck with Romney, and you're going to lose right along with him.
p.s. A dead snake would do better than Romney, but it would lose too. You and your pals are loo-hoo-hoo-hoo-sers! Alrighty then!
Well, what we have in office currently is a dead snake and running against him is another dead snake, maybe. Guaranteed that you will see the economy tank under four more years of Mugabe aka: Obama. Zimbabwe is US.
Republicans on these blogs like to point to the Polls and say, "Your Polls got it wrong on the Walker Recall!" And, they are right. A number of Polls did say Walker would be recalled, but he wasn't. However...
Nate Silver of Five Thirty Eight predicted Walker would NOT be recalled. Read it for yourself...

In Wisconsin, Walker Is Likely to Survive Recall
By NATE SILVER
Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, a Republican, is likely to survive a recall election on June 5, according to recent nonpartisan polls of the state.
Mr. Walker leads his Democratic opponent, Mayor Tom Barrett of Milwaukee, by an average of six percentage points in those polls and has not trailed in any poll since February.
http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/24/in-wisconsin-walker-is-likely-to-survive-recall/
But now that same Nate Silver and Five Thirty Eight say...
the election over
And ~ Republican Pundit George Will, seems to agree with Nate Silver, blasting Romney's flip flopping when he wrote in the Washington Post, October 2011,...
"Romney, supposedly the Republican most electable next November, is a recidivist reviser of his principles (Flip Flopper) who is not only becoming less electable; he might damage GOP chances of capturing the Senate…
Want even more from Republican George Will....

George Will: Mitt Romney Is 'Losing' Argument On Bain Capital, Personal Finances (VIDEO) - Posted: 07/15/2012

Romney will lose. Sorry if you don't like it, but that's just the way it is.
Obama gets re-elected it will be because the republicans aren't as good at playing the game. Hell, they have a gift, the Obama record, one so bad that it may go down in history. If they can't run on Obama's crappy 'leadership' example then they deserve to lose.
So, vote for the same ol' misery meister, someone once said that Americans deserve their government. I don't deserve Obama or his ineptitude but sadly, I am stuck with people who will vote to destroy themselves and congratulate themselves while the ship sinks. We are broke and Obama will insure that the debt is such that Greece will look successful by comparison. Vote Obama if you love Zimbabwe under Mugabe.
Obama's record. Is fine. The right simply tries to ignore it. He's going to win by a landslide.
Not sure what you're smoking there Timmy .... but could you pass it along to the rest of us ! Doesn't smell like a Marlboro to me !!
Raising our national debt about $5.2 trillion with NO BUDGET(S) as required by law does not fit my concept of "fine".
Passing a massive government takeover of our health industry while squandering billions on failed "Stimulus" ... is not "fine".
Suing a bunch of states instead of working with them to solve illegal immigration problems by ENFORCING EXISTING LAW ... is not "fine".
Ignoring the plight of millions upon millions of unemployed workers while you forget the jobs council because you are constantly campaigning ... is not "fine".
The President submitted a budget each year, as required by law. The total budget has remain virtually unchanged since Bush left office, i.e. spending has remained where it was in the beginning of 2008. So has the deficit, unfortunately. Obama didn't increase spending, Bush did - doubled it in fact.
You must not be familiar with the Affordable Care Act. It didn't 'take over' anything. I live in Massachusetts where virtually the same law has been in effect for years. It's not a takeover. And the only thing wrong with the stimulus, as many nobel laureate class economists have pointed out, is that it wasn't big enough.
I assume you mean states like Arizona, who took it upon themselves to usurp the authority of the Federal government to protect our borders. Right.
No more than previous incumbents have campaigned. If you think he's been ignoring the unemployed, you're just not paying attention. Ask people who (still) work for GM, for starters.
We have already heard it all:
When Obama was first elected, we heard "the recession was not Bush's fault, it was Obama's fault!"
When the American people wouldn't buy that, then we heard "well, maybe the recession wasn't Obama's fault, but he made it worse!"
When it was clear that the economy was getting better, we heard "well, maybe the recession wasn't Obama's fault, and maybe it is getting better, but it is Obama's fault that it isn't getting better fast enough!"
When do we stop listening to their lies??
Why should we put the same damned people back in power who caused this problem the first place to fix it?
I don't know about anybody else but I'm sticking with the current guy for simple reasons, he inherited this mess and the opposition has made sure to do as little as necessary to make sure we don't make any strides. To say to that he has done enough and is failing is pure bullshi^t. It's not all that clever of a plan If one has their eyes open and paying attention. Why do you think our government, the congress and the senate, has the lowest approval ratings in history? It's because they have decided to take our money and sit on their hands while the ship sinks. One side in particular has decided that in a democracy THEIR sides has to have their way ALL the time, even if what they propose has proven to not work. They even propose NO government at all if possible (Marxism). They ruined our economy and has sat around doing nothing in a not-so-veiled attempt pin the blame on the current president by pandering to the less informed and educated of our society. Those who don't understand how our government work tend to carve out the other branches of government and assume the presidency is just like a monarchy. It's not! Then on the flip-side they pretend they their candidate is going to come right in and do all these amazing things withing the first week, because again, he"ll have all this unencumbered power to do what he works with meddling from the other branches of government. And a like ignorant dumbasses or eating this stuff up. Nah I'm staying with the guy currently in office, because the other side ruined it in the for place, have no vision for the future and is actually promoting ignorance, and they will be able to do even more harm than they have exacted.
Never change horses mid-stream.
Sorry, that happened when we refused to elect McCain (Bush III) in 2008!
Four years ago we were in a free-fall of unemployment and headed towards the 2nd Great Depression.
You don't call a emergency room physician who resusitates a dying patient a failure; President Obama resusitated a dying capitalist system and now the economy is in recovery. A lot different than the GOP conservatives who would have pulled the plug and let the system go bankrupt.
President Obama has turned around the economy - consider the free-fall into depression that was occurring when he took office. Yes we are much better off than we were 4 years ago.
While the recovery is slow and likely to be affected by the European recession caused by austerity; the financial market is doing fine, and Mitt Romney and his 1% privileged class should thank President Obama for restoring their wealth, and those with 401Ks for restoring their retirement funds.
We may not be happy that President Obama did not turn out to be another leader in the stature of Martin Luther King, but he has slaved to keep us from the destruction of the conservative right, by even trusting in bipartisanship of an obstructionist GOP Congress.
The Tea Party GOP are weeds in the garden of democracy. No taking the country back to the GOP policies of despair, doubt, debt and depression.
What will happen to the construction industry when Romney/Ryan eliminate the interest deduction for home ownership?
Balderdash.
Obama has put us on the path to ruin, he's placed us in debt up to our eyeballs.
And we are now WORSE off than before.
Period.
Shhh, they like Obama, he's great! Or, well, maybe not great but better than nothing and besides, he's a known quantity. They know what he is capable of and repeating the same thing over and over hoping for different results is known as the definition of insanity. So, Obama loyalists are insane.
If you think things aren't better now than they were four years ago, you just weren't paying attention.
Define better. Somehow I doubt that the government can continue to stimulate us out of debt. As to Obama's record, it would seem that welfare is indeed in upswing mode.
Better as in no longer on the brink of total, global economic collapse. The prospects for the economy were far worse in 2008. That's why the market is far better now. It's a leading indicator. Unemployment is a trailing indicator. It takes longer to recover. Economics 101.
The Federal reserve is considering more buying of debt. The stock market lives and dies as a result of the Fed's actions. Without the government and the Fed propping up the stock market and the economy we would be in the toilet. Nothing tangible is being created to create a viable jobs market, the government will raise taxes, not cut spending and the Fed will print more bogus money. You can only stimulate for so long and then what do you use for money?
We have been living under a false pretense of success, the can was kicked down the road and nothing tangible has been done in four years to insure that the 08 financial meltdown won't happen again. Corzine skates free after stealing a billion plus investor dollars and Dimon says he's sorry for the billions 'lost' and the libor scandal isn't being addressed plus Europe is hanging by a German thread. Sorry, I am not sanguine and if Obama is re-elected he won't do anything to address the real issues, he will see the debt ceiling raised, borrow more money and ignore the bankrupting of Social Security and Medicare. Obamacare will usher in some marvelous taxes while doctors take early retirement and the liberals will cheer because their 'vaginas' are safe.
When George W. Bush was elected, our national debt was $5.7T. When Bush's last budget year was finished, our national debt was $11.9T. Who put us in debt up to our eyeballs??
...the numbers for Bush's last three months. Between October and November, 597,000 jobs were lost; between November and December, 681,000 were lost; and between December and January, 741,000 were lost.
April 2012 marks the 26th straight month of gains in private-sector employment, for a total of 4.2 million private-sector jobs.
DJIA Dec 26, 2008 8515
DJIA Aug 24, 2012 13157
Dec 29, 2008 U.S. corporate earnings probably fell for a sixth-straight quarter, the longest streak in at least 20 years, as consumer spending on automobiles, homes and retailers collapsed.
May 11, 2012 Fortune magazine released its ranking of the 500 biggest US corporations Monday, which showed that they received a record-breaking $824 billion in combined profits in 2011, up 16 percent from 2010.
The economic crash of 2007 was faster and deeper than in 1929. Having freddie and fannie robo signing thousands upon thousands of govt backed bad home loans then bundling the bad loans into $16T of derivatives which became valueless when home prices peaked, caused the collapse of the entire western banking system. Similar to what happened to the banks in 1929. Don't forget, it took fdr over 20 years, a world war simultaneously fought in europe and asia, and use of two nuclear bombs in densely populated cities killing millions before our economy was brought back to full employment. The damage that the bushman i mean herbert hoover did was extensive and could not be fixed in just three years or even four years.
But what can you say. You can tell mr grover, the gop, the rushbo, & foxnews.com are ideologues. They have difficulty with the facts and the truth. It's why they have problems with science - the branch of knowledge dealing with the body of facts and truths. They have a war on science, the truth, and the facts. So be careful of what they will tell you. They have a culture of lies.
And don't forget, that the main measure of the economy, the dow jones avg, has been hitting all time highs for months. The dax, the nikkei, and the hang seng are used to measure the economies for germany, japan, and china. But you'd have to include google and the world's largest company apple into the dow. These companies would have been included in the dow industrials if foxnews.com had not bought the dow and not intentionally included tech giants in to dow as they have been historically. Email foxnews.com and ask them why aren't apple or google included in the dow index. Was it because obama is a black man. It would add at least 1,500 pts to the dow. Apple hit a new high today again.
tracy, you are wrong,,,,,,,,,,,,http://www.nma.org/pdf/gold/his_gold_prices.pdf , gold at $800 a ounce end of 2007,,,,,,,,$1571. per ounce at end of 2011...... you are a revisionist..
“The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” ~Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader, (R-Ky.), October 2010
Republican TeaBilly Conservatives are willing to Ruin the Country and Sacrifice the Economy until they can get back in Power. Why do you think they have been the Party of No for so long.
Eric Cantor is still da Biggest “Weasel in Politics”. John Boehner is One Real Big “Puzzy”.
Wouldn’t Mitch McConnell make da Perfect “Turtle Head”?
You BetCha….Fer Sure.
well, no, Republicans have no intention pf doing anything except what is good for the Republican party... no matter how much it hurts the country!
A better definition of treason I have never heard!
Folks, Todd Akin is da “Poster Child” for da Good Ole Boys Club and……………….
Who just Blocked da Campaign Finance Reform Bill?
Who just Blocked Obamas Job Bill?
Who just Rewrote and put a Loophole in da House Version of da Stock Act. You know da Billl that would make it Illegal for Politicians do be involved in Insider Trading Antics. How many people have gone to Prison for this and yet they think they are “Exempt” from da Law.
And………here’s more since President Obama Took Office:
Tax on Companies that ship jobs overseas- A bill that would have eliminated a tax break that companies get when they ship jobs overseas. Republicans blocked this, allowing companies to keep the tax break they receive when they ship jobs to other countries.
The Small Business Jobs Act -would give LOCAL, community banks access to billions of dollars to loan to small businesses. Republicans blocked this, then attempted to block it a second time and failed.
Repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”- Would have repealed the law that forces gay and lesbian services members to lie about their sexuality and gives the military the right to discharge soldiers based on their sexuality. Republicans blocked this many times and Democrats were finally able to pass it with the support of just 2 Republicans.
You Guessed it…………Cantor, Boehner, McConnell and da rest of them Republican TeaBilly Conservative Politicians.
Can you imagine da Shenanigans if Mitt “F da Poor” Romney and Paul “Middle Class Warfare” Ryan get Elected.
You BetCha…..Fer Sure.
The Top 10 Poorest States in the U.S. are Republican States. Do you ever hear the Republicans talk about the Poor or Poverty in those States? The answer is “Never”. It just so happens most of those States are in the South and have “Right To Work Laws”. How’s that working out for ya?
And here is da Real Kicker: All those Republican Politicians in those States have Good Salaries, Health Care, Pension, Vacations, and all kinds of Special Perks……paid for by our “Tax $$$$”. Hmmmmm.
The most impoverished state is Mississippi, and it's followed by Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Louisiana, Montana, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama and North Carolina.
Lets break this down in Simple terms. Republican TeaBilly Conservative = Self Righteous Hypocrite.
justdafacts
Did your mom rip the rest of the pages out of your libtard play book? you post the same old BS every day. I bet she took down the pin up of Sarah you had in your room as well that why you are so angry
You Betcha Fer Sure
And the really pathetic thing is that these are the poorest states and we have republican governors like in Texas getting a republican judge to say they can end Planned Parenthood in Texas. In Lousiana and many other republican states no health care exchanges. In Louisiana, Jindal, the biggest republican ass kisser, fires anyone who supports the Affordable Care Act and that means Democrats who have common sense. But he will fire republicans if they dare disagree with him about anything.
Anyone who votes for Romney because they are having hard times now, "you ain't seen nothing yet" if he and the Republicans control the entire government.
"Louis give it a rest, how could it possibly get worse that what the inept liying megalomaniac in the white house has done to us."
Cheney left the White House years ago.
Just the first name that sprang to mind when you said, "inept lying megalomaniac", that's all.
Would inept, lying narcissist sound better to you ? Obama is concerned with one thing and one thing only ... getting re-elected and maintaining his power. It's all about what he wants and he decrees because Obama totally dislikes the concept of Separation of Powers !
"Ohhh I just ca-a-a-n't wait to be king !!!" ... apologies to Lion King fans everywhere.
Four years ago we were in a free-fall of unemployment and headed towards the 2nd Great Depression.

The Tea Party GOP are weeds in the garden of democracy. No taking the country back to the GOP policies of despair, doubt, debt and depression.
This was written like a Republican press release.
The GOP bankrupted the country and then blocked any progress. If any of this is true then this just tells me that people aren't paying attention.
The democrats had control of Congress the last two years of Bush and the first two years of Obama......According to the Constitution, Congress is the one that appropriates funds.....so, the spending that took place for four years is what has bankrupted this country..... it is on them.
No dear it was not because of the Democrats. Bush never vetoed one single bill the whole time republicans were doing his bidding, but he became the most serious vetoing President once Democrats got busy working to solve problems and fix things. Bush did not ever agree with what Democrats wanted to do for the country which shows just how much he is like the republicans in office now against the country having any progress or success.
The Democrat's philosophy is that growing government and throwing a lot of money at everything will solve ALL problems. They literally think we can legislate our way to Utopia.
Of course, they have no idea where the money they throw will come from.
When George W. Bush took office, the national debt was $5.7T. When his last budget was finished, the national debt was $11.9T Now, who, exactly has "no idea where the money they throw will come from"???
I am amazed at how many progressives can type and jerk off at the same time on this blog.
Stay classy.
RE: Statement thatprogressives can type and jerk-off at the same time: That's because progressives are ambidextrous and can use both sides of their brains at the same time, unlike conservative/regressives who are simple-minded and can only "jerk-off."
More like they only use the left side of what brains they have left since that must be the part that is preoccupied with sex and obscenities.
That's probably why they post filth with their free left hand.
Republicans aren't the group running around dressed like giant vaginas.
I'm sure that's only intended to complement the way that Republicans walk around dressed as all the time.
A poll by the Republi-CONS holds no water but is great material for a fictional tale.
