Romney's task in Tampa: Sell voters on himself, not just against Obama

TAMPA, Fla. – The task before Mitt Romney as he accepts his party’s presidential nomination this week in Florida is to convince the narrow segment of remaining undecided voters to boot President Obama from office, and then, decide on Romney as a suitable alternative.

This week’s Republican National Convention is one of three major opportunities – the other two being his selection of a running mate, and the presidential debates – Romney can count on to reach a large national audience. And for the former Massachusetts governor, that means changing perceptions about his personality and politics after a withering summer of attacks from the president’s re-election team and supportive super PACs.

Delegates look at an image of U.S. Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Mitt Romney displayed during the opening session of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, August 27, 2012.

Slideshow: Republican National Convention

“I think if the election were held tomorrow, Obama would win the election,” said Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser in 2008 to that year’s GOP nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain. “And in the balance of days left in this election, Romney has to change the dynamic of the election.”

Republicans will help Romney execute his game plan in a series of speeches and events throughout the week. Organizers hope to project the convention’s overall theme, “A Better Future,” in speeches and events spread across the convention’s abbreviated, three-day schedule. Republicans will weave the theme of Monday’s canceled session (“We Can Do Better”) into the three remaining days’ themes -- "We Built It," "We Can Change It," and "We Believe in America."

'Meet the Press' moderator David Gregory and NBC's Andrea Mitchell examine Mitt Romney's campaign strategy at the Republican National Convention.

Those themes represent the tasks at hand. Republicans must convince voters that Obama hasn’t done well enough to merit re-election. But Romney will arrive in Tampa with some of the worst personal approval ratings of any presumptive Republican nominee; 44 percent of voters said in the August NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll that they held a negative opinion of Romney, while 38 percent expressed a positive opinion.

For Romney, the convention is as much an exercise in re-introducing himself to voters and softening impressions as it is making the case against Obama.

"He needs to introduce himself to people. Even though he’s the nominee, he lost the summer pretty decisively," said Bob Shrum, the veteran Democratic presidential strategist.

Shrum said the Obama campaign, over the course of the summer, had efficiently "shattered the central rationale for Romney’s campaign, that he’s a businessman who knows how to create jobs."

Michael Steele, Ed Rendell and Vin Weber join Andrea Mitchell Reports to discuss the key issues regarding the upcoming Republican National Convention.

To do that, Romney will lean on surrogates like former Olympic athletes, who will pay tribute to Romney’s successes as head of the 2002 Salt Lake City games. Other speakers will include members of Romney’s church, fellow Mormons who are expected to pay tribute to acts of charity undertaken by Romney, a former bishop in his faith.

Is Mitt Romney ready for his moment with America? Chriz Cillizza, Mark Halperin and John Harris discuss.

Another closely watched-speech with potential to move the needle will be the Wednesday night speech by Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan – whose selection represented Romney’s first major decision in the general election. The Republican running mate is expected to fete Romney, as well as make the case for entitlement reforms.

Modern conventions in both parties are carefully scripted to drive a message to a nationally televised audience, leaving for a narrow margin of error for speakers. The primetime lineup has been carefully selected, but the risk that a single speaker could veer off-message hangs over Tampa almost as much as the impending tropical storm.

“You’re supposed to vet the speeches, and you’ve selected the speakers,” said Republican operative Frank Donatelli, the head of GOPAC.

An impolitic remark could hijack news coverage away from the central messages of each night. The GOP is also hoping to avoid what happened in 1992, when several hard-charging speeches by conservatives were blamed for turning off swing voters from President George H.W. Bush’s re-election bid.

But most pivotal of all is Romney’s own acceptance speech, which will be nationally-televised address Thursday night.

Romney has said he’s begun drafting the speech, and appeared to join his wife, Ann, on Sunday in practicing their convention appearances. The Romneys headed to Brewster Academy, a prep school near their home in New Hampshire, for several hours on Sunday afternoon to practice their speeches.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus marks the official beginning to the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

But he’s overall been generally guarded about the contents of his and Ann’s speeches.

"I like my speech. I really like Ann's speech," he told reporters after a second day of practice on Monday morning.

The national spotlight for Romney will offer a personalizing opportunity for the former Massachusetts governor. But he’ll also have to explain his rationale for running, and make the case against a second term for Obama.

“He needs to bring definition to the race,” said Schmidt. “Why's he running for president? I think it's an unanswered question right now. “

A successful convention might mean a bounce for Romney; McCain led Obama in the immediate aftermath of both of their respective conventions in 2008. Republicans argue that advantage only diminished due to the financial crisis in the fall of that year.

This year, a different obstacle hangs over Romney’s bid to leave Tampa with more energy than Obama: next week’s Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

Romney needs to try to sell himself to the voters? That ship has sailed.

I think it is more likely that he will use the same "dog whistles" that the Republicans have used since Nixon was in office. You know, that their President's base is all on welfare, like Romney claimed today. His plan is to play on jingoism and fear of the unknown. Very sad for this day and age. One would think that Romney and the Republicans would evolve away from that.

I don't agree... since a lot of people would vote for their neighbor's pet dog than Obama, there's not too much selling needed by Romney.

But when Romney becomes president, I'm sure he will do a whole lot better than Obama could even dream about.

He has been selling himself for months, it is just that none of the liberal media will report it.

They will instead report what is given to them from the White House.

This convention will give the public what is not edited at the Oval Office, which is what we need to look at.

But don't expect to find much coverage about it here.

Willard Romney has been running for President of the United States for the last six years, you would think he would have defined himself and introduced himself by now.

The problem is that he, like the Republican Party, has no positive plans to improve the lives of the majority of Americans.

Destroying the government, eliminating the middle class and letting the poor DIE may be the goals the GOP has, but they are not what real live human Americans want.

Notice the number of brain dead wandering around Tampa this week ?

There are so many fact checks going against Romney's tax plan, Medicare plan, etc., he's just going to stand up there and lie.

He's already back tracking on Bain Capital and Romneycare.

According to politifact.com he only tells the truth 29% of the time.

So, for conversations with neighbors get politifact.com's new app "Settle It". It allows you to quickly search for fact checks. It will really enhance your conversations with those that don't follow politics but are listening to the negative ads.

  • What does Romney have to do this week? Three things. He has to convince the public that the failed policies of the past (cutting taxes for the richest of the rich and more deregulation) will work this time around. He has to convince the public that the government telling you what kind of birth control you can use along with what medical procedures you have to have is smaller government. He has to explain to the public how he can be for and against so many issues at the same time. Other than that -- nothing to it.

It will be very entertaining to see what kind of bullsh!t nonsense the MSDNC prime time Stooges lineup will conjure up for tonight's regularly scheduled lefty-liberal anti-Romney/Ryan hate fest. Seems like ole Mother Nature is a Republican after all. She basically spared Tampa and deprived the DNC of one night of spewing its nonsense. My guess is that the MSDNC morons will simply revert to the usual low information lefty liberal voters standards: "Bain, tax returns, Seamus, 1%, BS nonsense that has fooled these shiny-object dullards in thse past.

Regardless of what these Stooges do, it will still be the best comedy on cable TV!!!!

The beast (666) is upon us, FOX news F=6, O (15th letter)1+5=6, X (24th letter)2+4=6. Revelations tells us the beast has 7 heads and 10 horns and 10 crowns which equal 27. If Romney iselected he will be the 27thelected Republican president. (Remember the Democrat- Republicans and the Whig Parties both turned into the Republican Party). FOX (Murdock) also owns 27 television stations in the USA. Revelation 13.1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

Hosea 4:6 God Says, My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget
thy children. FOX is the Blasphemer and you if believe its lies, you allow it to destroy your knowledge. God says, my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

Revelation 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the
earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. Bain Capital (Romney’s Baby) owns Clear Channel which owns 866 radio stations and Premiere Radio Networks, a national radio network that serves nearly 5,800 radio station affiliates and has over 213 million weekly listeners. Programs include the Rush Limbaugh Show, Glenn Beck and the Sean Hannity Show (Revelation 13:11 and he spake as a dragon)

Both FOX (Murdock = 1st beast) and Bain (2nd beast) work together.Revelation 13:12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound washealed. [13:13] And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, [13:14] And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. [13:15] And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. [13:16] And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: [13:17] And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Ezekiel 33:7, So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.

We as knowledgeable Christians cannot let the beast in, we must resist his lies, gain knowledge and give warning.

He has already done this on a regular basis. To do it more, he might as well change his party affiliation to Republican. Romney will do what Republicans always do, favor the rich. Both of them are pro-fracking (natural gas drilling that ruins drinking water). There is no difference between them on economic or environmental issues.

The best evidence that Romney is succeeding is the desperation, vitriol and stupidity of the left wing posts here. More to come to come every day this week no doubt. Obama can't run on his record so gutter politics and character assasination is all his supporters have left. Divert and divide. How sad.

I'm tired of hearing of how big a disaster Comrade inherited. Any other president would of had the country rebounding by now.

pgulrich and Brian-NOBAMA - your constant harping on people getting "free stuff" posting on this site shows how totally desperate you are for anything to post. It is tired rhetoric and shows that you have nothing of value to say. My guess is you are both on some sort of government assistance.

If you are because you've fallen on hard times, that's unfortunate but that is what government assistance is for. And, those of us who are working and paying into it would never begrudge those of you needing assistance getting a helping hand.

But you just sound really silly. You should try some new material. I'm sure the GOP will be posting something new for you to say any minute now. Oh wait, they won't. They only have old rhetoric for the dumb and dumber followers.

I'm amused that they're using former Olympic athletes to prove that he turned around SLC and thus can successfully run an organization. Here in Florida, they've been showing an ad with Kristi Yamaguchi in this exact role. I wonder how many people realize that Yamaguchi didn't compete in SLC in 2002, but rather, won gold in 1992 in Albertville, France?

Yamaguchi had been professional, and thus ineligible to compete in the Olympics, for nearly 10 years by the time Romney managed SLC. Not really sure why her opinion - or even her affiliation - on the subject would be relevant to much of anything.

But when Romney becomes president, I'm sure he will do a whole lot better than Obama could even dream about.

If by "better" you mean bigger deficits, bigger financial collapses, bigger spending to military contractors, bigger corporate welfare rolls, bigger gulf between the ultra-rich and everyone else, and a bigger depression - Why, you're right!

Romney plans to do the same type of tax cutting / military spending boost / deregulating the financial industry that Bush Jr. did, but on a bigger scale for much bigger results! If you liked the Bush recession, you'll love the Romney Depression!

Republicans have been reciting those same old tired talking points for so long, I doubt they can twist their mouths to say anything else.

Mitt has been trying to sell himself for what, 7 years now, and even the Republican base doesn't like him.

There's no way I'm going to vote for more tax cuts for the rich, and more pay cuts for the rest of us.

That whole Republican playbook called "The Ryan Plan" has nothing in it but one assault after another on anybody and everybody who is not a 1%er.

If you read the Romney/Ryan plan you will see that there is something there...

Like how they will eliminate the tax deduction you get from owning a home, to pay for the tax cuts they give themselves.

So all you home-owners... you know that nice tax break you get each year? Kiss it goodbye with the Romney/Ryan plan. But don't worry, your sacrifice will not go to waste because you will be providing Romney and Ryan with a cut to their taxes. And let's face it, they need that money more than you do.

Read it yourself, it is all in their plan.

He can't even make up his own campaign slogans w/o lifting from the competition.

On the bright side, Perry praying for rain finally worked....maybe they should broker the sucker & run that twit instead! At least he can claim he did something original.

Let's be real, the only reason you sheep are following Comrade Obama is because he is giving you free stuff. Grow up, put on your big boy pants, that means you too Fiesty and get jobs. I'm tired of hearing of how big a disaster Comrade inherited. Any other president would of had the country rebounding by now.

And that is different from the reason to vote for Romney, how, exactly? You are voting for Romney because he is giving your masters free stuff.

Your complaint against Obama is that he didn't give you enough free stuff, and rather, gave it to the middle class and the poor.

Well, the problem with your theory is that these rich are parasites on the middle class. The middle class are the job creators - no one ever created a job because they had a lot of money. The only time a job gets created is when a business is so overwhelmed with demand that they have to hire more people to fulfill that demand. That comes from consumers and by and large, the consumers are the middle class.

You give the rich extra money, they are going to give it to Wall Street, where they will then start making more Ponzi schemes such as the one that created the crash of 2000 and then again the crash of 2008.

This is your complaint against Obama...that he wants people to act responsibly here and not have the power to destroy the economy by being stupid. That is the reason you have a thousand insults against Obama, such as being Communist, etc. Because he is doing his job and trying to defend his country against the irresponsible excesses of your masters.

And since this is the season of slogans, here's one for you:

    The GOP: Insult over substance.

My goodness, you sure are a good little democrat. All the government freebies are there for you if you vote democrat. Of course the question of how to PAY for all those freebies seems to escape notice or attention, but then, that's what democrats do, promise the 'goodies' to get the votes and then bankrupt the country to pay for those goodies.

Then, guess you are the Romney 'birther' except you are far more into lying than the original Obama birthers. I would ask if you are into parroting democrat talking points that you've been spoonfed but that would be redundant. Redhead Ranting -- I will answer your question by saying that, YES, I do get tired of all the vitriol, hate, and idiotic rhetoric on these threads. And, I will also agree that on these threads such nonsense comes from "both sides". However, I do not suggest that the level of pre-school behavior is equal from both sides, and this for the simple reason that this is a liberal site, and from what I have seen most of the juvenile name-calling comes from those (conservatives?) trying to disrupt otherwise civil discussions (is this what people mean by "troll"?).

I think I can say with some certainty that neither candidate (Romney nor Obama) would ever use the language expressed in these threads.

I express as my opinion, however, that the Romney campaign has been embracing falsehoods and lies in its media advertising much more than the Obama campaign. Peace be with you.

I thought his religion and charity were very personal and private - thus no tax returns to be released. Guess it's only personal and private when it suits his needs.

BTW, if Romney's birth certificate joke is a sampling of his humor, just think what the White House Correspondents Dinner will be like!

I am white and even I get the racial implication of badgering the first African American President to reveal the long form of his birth certificate.

Romney's father was born in Mexico, and you don't hear the same questions about Romney's birthplace - as he himself noted, to the amusement of bigots who support him.

Yes, BrentAZ, it was offensive; after 5 years of the birther baloney, it was petty, shows ignorance on the part of the GOP and the remark was offensive. Mitt Romney is a coward; unlike John McCain in 2008 who stood up to the crazy birther/Muslim nonsense, Romney lacks courage to do it, lacks the leadership needed to be President. It was no joke however Mitt and the right spins it; he knew exactly what he was doing. For 5 years conservatives have beat the birther drum; it makes the GOP look stupid which is exactly how Mitt Romney looked when he made that comment--stupid, cowardly and incapable of leading.

As for walking around angry, not hardly but this liberal does wonder how conservatives can be so completely stupid.

BrentAZ, it's a difference between a man's qualifications and his legitimacy. Romney can put his resume up against Obama's and they can attack each other on their education and experience qualifications. But questioning Obama's birthplace (which he has proved) says that it doesn't matter what's in his resume, his pedigree is illegitimate.

Romney may say that's a joke, but it's in very poor taste. Makes you wonder if he belongs to any country clubs with restrictive membership.

Sorry, Brent, but I will NOT lighten up on Romney's comment; it was insulting. It was NOT funny, it was disrespectful, cowardly and ignorant. Romney knew exactly what he was saying and he did it on purpose then he tried to laugh it off and claim it was a joke. Maybe you missed seeing the interview with a birther in Romney's crowd that day. A journalist pointed out to the woman that President Obama has provided his birth certificate and she immediately dismissed it as "phony". This was the crowd Romney played to; instead of being a man, Mitt Romney proved himself to be a pandering, ignorant wimp with no backbone as well as no core.

Bush and the GOP are responsible for the unemployment rate, the economic collapse, two wars and the deficit and debt; the GOP legislators are responsible for keeping unemployment high by obstructing every effort President Obama and democrats made to create jobs. Oh, and by the way, President Obama--despite the obstruction of the GOP has created more jobs in 3 1/2 years than Bush did in 8.

Yes... the unemployment rate is over 8%.. but how can you or any other GOP supporters forget that it was 7.4% and climbing when Bush left office? How can anyone ignore the recession that really started based on years of failed economics during the Bush years? Bush wasn't directly responsible for the rise in gas prices, but when the gas prices 'DOUBLE' on the American people during Bushes administration, is that something that should be ignored. I don't agree with everything Obama has done, but clearly he is the right choice for America in 2012.

Seems as though it just might be what he does best! It is alos sad that we as Americans can not get together- especially the lower and middle classes and just stop paying our taxes until we the people are represented! It has become taxation without representation again! Willard's intentions are to create a fuedal society in whihc the few ric hest of us will own the land and rent it back to us! Great plan Mitt! It is also, not taxation with representation when 99% of the people make and hold less than 1% of the resources while "electing" those from the 1%, or thier cronies! Again, let's stop the taxes debate, quit paying them until we the people are represented again. It is our money they take from OUR checks then sit on their thrones and tell us how and when and what we are going to do with it. Screw you!

Romney claims that President Obama's removing of the work requirement for welfare, which is a complete lie, is because he wants to shore up his base which is a lie on top of a lie. Most of the people on welfare are white but older white people have been led to believe that most welfare recipients are African American so Romney is actually trying to shore up his own base with a lie using racism. What a guy! Additionally, he can offend African Americans because they aren't going to vote for this idiot anyway.

Respectfully, either you where dishonest or you tried to make a point with spin.

Actually you have to take the percentage of population and then per capa. If you take the raw numbers of course white have more, there are more whites then blacks. You break it down per capa, then the numbers changed exponentially.

It really dosnt matter which color a person is regarding welfare. As long as the person in need is a US Citizen. Division between ethic origins is meaningless, we are all Americans first and what ever ethic origin you are second.

Wrong, Mr. Obama loosened the rules by allowing waivers.

Since Mr. Obama has a long history of being against the work requirement, who isn't to say that he would grant numerous waivers?

Brent.....you are incorrect....as reported by many media sites this claim is false and has been fact checked by so many, however the GOP an Mitt Romney has never let the truth stop them from continuing the lie as a simple check by yourself would have told you so:

Washington (CNN) -- Welfare reform, which added a work requirement tied to welfare benefits, is often cited as a major bipartisan political success of President Bill Clinton's second term.

So the idea of the next Democratic president, Barack Obama, taking the work requirement off the table is political dynamite.

Apparently, the Romney campaign believes it is.

A Romney campaign ad titled "Welfare Reform," which came out earlier in August, says that's just what Obama did.

"On July 12, President Obama quietly ended the work requirement, gutting welfare reform. One of the most respected newspapers in the country called it 'nuts,' " the ad says.

"Under Obama's plan, you wouldn't have to work and you wouldn't have to train for a job," the ad continues. "They just send you your welfare check. And welfare to work goes back to being plain old welfare ..."

But the Obama campaign calls Romney's ad "nuts."

                                  CNN's Fact-check agrees.

Clinton calls out 'disappointing' Romney ad

"Every single person here who's looked at it says it's patently false," Obama said a news conference on Monday.

So where did the notion of a major welfare reform overhaul come from?

Where it didn't come from is Washington but rather from Utah, Nevada, California, Connecticut and Minnesota.

These states, some with Republican governors, asked the federal government for more flexibility in how they hand out welfare dollars. Their purpose was to spend less time on federal paperwork and more time experimenting with ways to connect welfare recipients with jobs.

The Obama administration cooperated, granting waivers to some states from some of the existing rules.

The waivers gave "those states some flexibility in how they manage their welfare rolls as long as it produced 20% increases in the number of people getting work."

In some small way, the waivers might change precisely how work is calculated but the essential goal of pushing welfare recipients to work -- something both Democrats and Republicans agreed to in the 1990s -- remains the same.

@ Gingerbread - It is sort of pointless to correct BrentAZ.
                                  (a) He is still busy looking for those headless corpses in the AZ desert, as announced by one of his fearless leaders a few years back.
                                  (b) He has no brain.

And thus he is the kind of American Romney depends on for his campaign of pure and endless lies. It doesn't matter how many times the statement is proven to be a lie, Romney will repeat it and the republicker faithful will defend it.

Not even with massive voter suppression will this dead horse come in first on Nov 6!

I normally disagree with many of Chris Matthews' views, but the spot on Morning Joe where he blasted into that used car salesman Priebus was absolutely entertaining. The dumbfounded look on Priebus' face as Matthews continued to lay into him was priceless, and it is about time that media figures stopped allowing talking point lies to pass through when the interviewer knows for a fact that they are false.

The demise of this country began when those in power could lie with impunity to the public through the media without being called on it.

How can Romney sell himself? Even he doesn't know who he is. He used to claim he'd be more liberal than Ted Kennedy; now he says he's "severely conservative." He's been on all sides of every issue sometimes in the same day; he's pro-choice, then pro-life; he's for the personhood amendment which bans contraception, then he says he doesn't want to ban contraception. He was for RomneyCare before he was against; for the mandate before against it; for using the MA plan as a model for national health care reform before claiming it's only good for MA. On and on the list goes.

Ted Kennedy was right, Romney is the multiple choice candidate.

("Whatever I said, I stand by it." [Till tomorrow.]) The only things he seems to believe in are: money and his need for yet another tax break; a crackpot cult founded by a hustler who found some golden tablets (that no one has ever seen) under a manure pile somewhere; and the divine right of the top 5% to end up with 95% of the country's income and assets.

We'll see what the man has to say. Then we'll contrast it to the positions he held before and see if this man can be trusted enough to be President and it'll happen to come down to the debates to see if Mr. Romney can answer to all the things he said and meant. Like this quote from last week I read in an article about Mr. Romney making a joke about the Preisdent and saying nobody has to ask for my birthcertificate, in the same article they wrote Mr. Romney said " the private sector is doing fine and it's because of the loopholes and deductions and tax havens they have are the reasons they're doing fine." So in my opinion that means the President wasn't lying when he said the private sector is doing just fine two months ago.

jeffrey, What you say at the end doesn't seem to penetrate the skulls of many Americans. For a goodly fraction of the private sector, Obama's line was a dramatic understatement - they are doing beyond fine, they are breaking records for profits and cash on hand.

Paul Ryan is the greatest moocher of all. He has never held a real job.As a career politician he has lived off the dole and on the backs of regular people forever. His heath care is subsidized by our government and as are his sensational retirement benefits. Now that is what I call mooching. He has a great safety net for himself but would do away with it for all others. He is missing the very vital empathy gene. He understands nothing about the lives and problems of real hard working people. Plus, he wants to impose his religious beliefs on all of us. What kind of American is that?

The right likes to talk about those government workers who suck the life out of the country with high pay, great benefits and a pension. But wait isn't paul ryan just a government worker who is sucking the life out of the country with high pay, great benefits and a pension?

Brent in AZ ... You sound like a recording of Anne Romney, claiming that it would give President Obama "ammunition to use against them", that would only be true if they had something to hide, otherwise it would be a wise thing for Romney as it would end the argument and put the matter to rest. The ammunition that could be hidden in his tax returns could only be a negative if there was anything revealing his duplicity in something illegal. Anything distasteful, immoral, or considered a rich man avoiding taxes would not in any way impact him negatively, that would only happen if what he did was illegal. Tax avoidance in not against the law but tax evasion is...so let's see where the Romney tax return puts him. If he did not commit a crime, fine by me, but if he is a criminal, let him face the consequences. He is a great deflector, he would probably get away with blaming it all on his accountants, he would be able to pleasure himself by firing them.

Brent, he's hiding them for a reason. Even a moron should want to know what that reason is. Maybe he's just paranoid, besides being a pathological liar. Excellent qualification for a leader, no? Maybe he's a tax cheat, taking advantage of a system rigged in favor of those who can pay for the rigging. After all, he is a guy who claimed a business deduction for a hobby horse.

And BTW, Brent, what is class warfare? Aside from being something you heard on fox, what is it? Is it trying to get a raise that could reduce your boss's bonus? You know, your boss is richer than you so he needs money more than you do, so you should ask for a salary reduction. What is class warfare, Brent?

Considering that more and more Republicans are calling for Mitt to release at least 5 years of tax returns, it IS going to make a difference. The perception is he is dishonest and he is doing NOTHING to dispel that perception.

I analyzed tax returns for mortgages. I could understand every single little thing in them and what the implications of all the schedules with EASE. Jimmy - could YOU read tax returns that were not prepared using 1040EZ? I would guess not.

pgulrich, McCain only had to produce 2 years because he had been in FEDERAL OFFICE for years and years and the previous tax returns had previously been released with each campaign prior. The 2 years was to bring his tax returns UP TO DATE. Romney has NEVER held Federal office and he didn't produce tax returns for his Gubernatorial run, either. Romney needs to produce TEN YEARS of taxes. TEN YEARS ... not redacted versions of two. TEN YEARS WITH ALL THE SCHEDULES.

Until then, it's known as business as usual-lie about the facts and then lie about the people calling them out for lying. and then, when people point out the obvious inequality in our economic/social sytem, then it's oh wow, STOP with the class warfare already!

                                                      #14.18 - Tue Aug 28, 2012 9:18 AM EDT

The GOP narrative should hurt your head.

From what I see here, it goes like this...

"The poor have so many other support mechanisms that they no longer need the tax breaks". Anyone that swallows this GOP non-logic that the stimulus didn't work because we went over 8% unemployment is a fool... the statement itself carries no logic at all... it's just more oft repeated nonsense. Helping the poor is GUARANTEED spending... that feeds DEMAND... that HELPS the economy. And who is the GOP to determine whether the poor "need" the tax break or not? What an incredible joke.

"The middle class no longer needs their tax cut". If it weren't for the fact that the middle class has lost over 40% of it's net worth and that the membership to the bankrupt, those on food stamps, those on unemployment, and those otherwise needing jobs has increased dramatically, I might agree. Again... piss-poor twisted GOP logic. If tax cuts are your only stimulus, why would you pull the rug out while we're discussing another recession?... because money in middle class hands is money not in the hands of the rich. Again, tax breaks to the middle class is the most effective stimulus possible... it WILL be spent.

"We need to maintain or increase tax cuts to the rich to create jobs". This has to be the least understood "tax incentive" known to mankind. Think HARD about this one...

Taxes on the rich are taxes on their PERSONAL income. It kicks in at nominal rates only AFTER the first $200,000 or $2450,000 if filing jointly.

PERSONAL income for many of the rich is very different from what we understand personal income to be. PERSONAL income for the rich, in many cases, is money they have CHOSEN to remove from the businesses they are involved by way of HUGE paydays. HUGE paydays for corporate executives has become the norm instead of the exception. And low tax rates ENCOURAGE them to do so.

Low tax rates at the high end ENCOURAGE the rich to remove money from the businesses they are involved in... to remove money from this economy... and to put this money in off-shore tax havens for a rainy day... it's called HOARDING. It's the biggest hoax possible to call this a stimulus... instead it is the biggest UN-stimulus possible.

Low tax rates at the high end DISCOURAGE the rich to invest in jobs.

Low tax rates at the high end ENCOURAGE the rich to remove money from our economy, NOT to reinvest it into equipment or expansion or in JOBS.

Low tax rates at the top end ENCOURAGE hording by the rich.

Low tax rates at the top is THE PRIMARY goal of the GOP machine. They understand it's importance to maintaining this obsession.

Low tax rates at the high end explain PERFECTLY why the rich have increased wealth during this recession while the middle class (what's left of it) has lost 40% of it's net worth.

The joke of a party called the GOP needs to be exposed for what it is and what it stands for... and what it stands for doesn't include you and me.

Romney only knows how to buy low and sell at a profit.

In 2008 Romney invested 40 million of his own cash into his campaign, this year he's keeping all of his money where it is. He's doing the whole show on his sugar daddies' dime. Why are reporters not questioning that?

Does Romney already know his 2012 run is in the crapper? He sure doesn't seem to believe in himself this time around. Why should the voters?

40 million isn't exactly chump change. That kind of money would have kept Gingrich going and going and going. Romney is a tight-fisted scrooge. We already know he moved heaven and earth to avoid paying his fair share in taxes. If someone else wants to pay, Mittens won't fight for the check. He's that kind of a guy.

The more obvious answer: Why support a losing ticket with your own "hard earned" money? Would YOU pay for something that's going to be a total waste of money? It's the businessman talking (and acting). Maybe Romney does recognize a losing proposition when he sees one?

ACA does not extend medicare and my wife is losing benefits on her Medicare advantage and it will be going away.

Of course when you take away 716 billion dollars from the fund bad things are going to happen.

Romney will restore that money back to the trust fund and keep Advantage in tact.

I have looked at Romney,s health plans and they are much better than the inefficient government run Bureaucracy. GAO and CBO estimates on ACA have tripled.

ACA the largest tax increase on the middle class with 28 little taxes of which many have nothing to do with health care.

Tax on prescriptions, pace makers, wheel chairs etc will be devastating on the seniors but that is what Obama had in mind.

ACA does not extend medicare and my wife is losing benefits on her Medicare advantage and it will be going away.

Medicare advantage IS NOT Medicare. it is a completely different insurance program.

From wikipedia (sorry, but it is a succinct quote):

Medicare Advantage differs from the original Medicare model, which offered a standard plan provided directly by the state. In contrast, Medicare Advantage is offered by a private provider.

In effect, you are complaining about an issue which actually doesn't exist. For that reason, I do not think it is valuable spending more time rebutting your other nonsense.

They will see Obama as Jimmy Carter but on steroids and Clinton more in line with Romney. They will remember how Bubba worked with Newt and they will recall how Obama works with nobody not a Lib. The middle will compare Obama stopping his feet and holding his breath and remember Hilary calling Obama's tactics shameful.

We also know that Obama went OUT OF HIS WAY, PUBLICALLY, to "negotiate" with the Republicans, only to have EVERY deal vetoed in the backroom by Ryan, Mcconnel and the rest of the reptilians. We also know, very publically that McConnel pledged to obtruct the President at every turn ("make him a one term president). So, who can't work or play well with others? hint, it is not Barack Obama.

I voted for obama in 2008. i am waiting this year till after the debates. I guess i like that at least romney has a budget. i still don't know what obamas budget is. romney's budget was drafted by some very smart guys-some democrats but most republican supply side thinkers. if obama does not come forth with a detailed economic plan I think Romney could win.

He doesn't tell you a thing of what he would do and now he has a person with atheistic beliefs as a sidekick. They don't want to get in the weeds or wonkie. HOw many times have they said that. I just saw where the Romneys were trying to pretend they shop at Costco. They go there all the time. First all of they better make sure there is one in their townor one of their towns cause there aint none here and besides I have never been in one. I think our costcos are hair salons. Maybe that is costcutters. Romney cooks and even washes and irons his Costco shirts? And wears them every day. Duh do they not know that a lot of shirts these days do not need ironing? And if you have billions you don't go to Costco. You may send your maid. If there is one available. My sons don't have billions but they don't cook and my nephew who is pretty wealthy wouldn't dream of cooking or ironing shirts or finishing his basement or anything else needs done. And he wouldn't get caught dead in a costco shirt. Why would you if you could afford more. This just shows one more time how out of touch Romney is because they have to do what they think real people do. Guess what they don't. Do we have enough stupid people in this country to elect the Romney and Ryan ticket? That is a depressing thought!

I saw a picture of Ryan.....walking along a crowd of well wishers. In the picture, he was walking from left to right, waving to well wishers........WITH HIS LEFT HAND!

I INTERPRETED his "body language" .......as showing a little arrogance. Why didn't he wave with is RIGHT HAND? That would give him a shorter distance to SHAKE HANDS with his well wishers?
