President Barack Obama may lead former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in most presidential polls, but in the social media campaign, Romney has had the edge for months, according to NBCPolitics.com's computer-assisted analysis of 2 million campaign-related Twitter and Facebook posts.
In recent weeks, Obama has generally led Romney by two to seven percentage points in national polls, which carefully select their samples to reflect Americans most engaged in the election and registered to vote.
The picture is different among Americans who have gone online to talk about the election, however — NBCPolitics.com's analysis indicates that that narrower sample of the country prefers Romney by 36 percent to 32 percent overall and by 51 percent to 49 percent when they're compared head to head:

Since May 29, when he clinched the Republican nomination, Mitt Romney has commanded the support of slightly more commenters on social media than has Barack Obama. (None of the Above reflects clear statements of intent to vote for a third candidate or refusal to vote for either. In a direct head-to-head comparison, Romney's lead is 51 percent to 49 percent.)
As NBCPolitics.com launches a comprehensive daily tracking report on social media sentiment about the 2012 presidential election, the results reveal an intriguing difference between the opinions of Americans who are specifically targeted by scientific polling operations and those who proactively take to their keyboards to broadcast their views without gatekeepers.

The data are unique among those being reported by national news organizations, whose social media analysis has largely focused on two metrics: "buzz," or how much each candidate is talked about online in general, and "effectiveness," or how extensively each candidate is using social media as a campaign tool.
NBCPolitics.com's analysis, by contrast, explores the actual content of what is being said, providing a glimpse at what issues are specifically driving people's opinions.
Reshuffled Republican convention set to proceed on Tuesday
NBCPolitics.com uses a tool called ForSight, a data platform developed by Crimson Hexagon Inc., which many research and business organizations have adopted to gauge public opinion in new media. It isn't the same as the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll or other national surveys, which seek to reflect national opinion; instead, it's a broad look at what's being said by Americans who follow politics and are active on Facebook, Twitter or both, and why they're saying it.

Romney led Obama by 53 percent to 47 percent over the weekend among all comments that expressed a clear intention to vote for one of the two candidates. That margin has been typical ever since May 29, when Romney is generally considered to have sealed the Republican nomination; in all such comment over that time, Romney leads by 51 percent to 49 percent.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., tells NBC News' David Gregory that Mitt Romney needs to focus on women and minorities — advice that is supported by NBC News' social media analysis.
Several factors could account for the variance from national polls. For one thing, statistical experts have long acknowledged that people are more motivated to speak out when they have a grievance — in other words, opponents of Obama may be more motivated to post than are supporters satisfied with the status. Social media analysis is interested in capturing and reporting that structural divide, while controlled national polls have a different mission: capturing a representative sample that proportionally reflects all opinions.
Moreover, when commentary on each candidate is broken down into specific issues driving positive and negative assessments, certain themes that have little to do with politics or policy recur: Eight percent to 10 percent of Obama's negative sentiment, for example, always rests on the fact that he is African-American or on the misconception that he is a Muslim.
Neither factor on its own is enough to register as one of Obama's top negative drivers, but together they are more than enough to compose a bedrock of general opposition that he confronts before legitimate policy disagreements are even factored in, one that helps explain Obama's consistent negative rating of about 60 percent since NBCPolitics.com began tracking the social media campaign in January.
The flip side, however, is that the passion of such opposition is mirrored in the depth of enthusiasm for Obama. Most favorable sentiment falls into issue-specific categories like health care or the president's perceived role in the recovery from the recession that began in the final year of George W. Bush's presidency:

Topics of positive discussion around Barack Obama are heavily weighted toward specific policy issues, especially health care.
Romney's appeal, by contrast, is broader (his approval rating has been about 50 percent since he clinched the nomination, 10 points higher than Obama's) but not as deep. Positive sentiment for Romney is heavily weighted toward nonspecific personal or strategic assessments — he seems smart, or he's a Republican with a legitimate shot at winning this time around:

Topics of positive discussion around Mitt Romney are heavily weighted toward general discussions of his electability.
Another factor is that while mainstream news media and polling firms — like the campaigns themselves — are focusing on the economy, everyday people who sound off on their own initiative prefer to talk about issues that are personal to them: health care, especially, but also social class and women's reproductive rights, according to NBCPolitics.com's analysis.
Since May 29, when the November matchup was settled, through Sunday, health care has driven the largest proportion of both positive and negative commentary about Obama, and by large margins:

Similarly, the top negative drivers for Romney are predominantly comments on his "otherness" — his wealth, his membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints — and his stance on issues focusing on women's rights:

The picture that emerges is one of a campaign that's as much about personalities as it is about core politics, and the data reflect that Americans love or hate Obama, while they merely like or dislike Romney. Romney's selection of Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his vice presidential running mate this month was widely interpreted as a move to sharpen his image; we'll examine how well or poorly that worked later this week.

IT still baffles me the number of people who dont understand the differnce between earned income tax and capital gains. However if you make 100k and pay 30k in taxes and Mitt made 20 million and paid 3 million then Mitt paid 2 million 970k more than you did. Doesnt matter what % he paid he stIll paid a hell of lot more than you did. Ther should be a cap on it income taxes anyway. I think regardless of % no person should have to pay more than 5 million in income taxes. Its just not fair for me to get back EIC and end up not paying any fed are state income taxes at all.

High roller, first of all, no one is forcing you to claim the earned income credit.
The earned income credit is one of the greatest things that has happened to working families in decades! Imagine how many poor people would not be able to have a job without being able to buy a car with the EIC since their job barely pays the bills. The recession would have been 10X worse without it.
Second, high roller is not a very good name for some one still getting the EIC.

When most people say "30% tax" they mean the marginal rate, 30% of all income over whatever the limit is now. The maximum marginal rate is 39%. Romney pays 15% or less because he has NO earned income from a W-2. that means the marginal rates don't apply to him, he pays a flat tax of 15% less many deductions. Of course if he is elected and gets his tax law passed, he will pay no tax on anything. He will be in the 0% tax bracket. Then he MIGHT think he has enough.
You don't think he has zero earned income? Google his 2010 tax return.
It's hard to imagine that any reasonably intelligent people including the elderly, poor, middle class, and disabled/sick would even begin to support having the minimum wage repealed, SS taken away, Medicare replaced with gambling tokens in the stock market that has been corrupt for many years, back a Party of non-working greedy, male chauvinists in Congress, who can only say, "NO' or "Give Me More", and more than willing to pay higher taxes to cover what the 1% elite do not pay. Keep the greedy out of office and take back the control of the Government to be "Of the people, by the people, and for the people (not just the greedy 1% elite). -the sales of Stock to make money - capital gains applies
-Mutual funds - Capital gains may apply, but often dividends and interest are taxed at standard rates
-interest and dividends from tax-free Municipal bonds
-Social Security
I.e. he is semi-retired and living off his savings. As he earned much of this, he paid premium rates, but he has not been working since 2002 other than 4 yeasr as governor of Massachusetts. That means his income at that time was taxed, just like yours an mine.

Governor Romney income tax return while he was Governor of MA would have been blank under Earned Income since he work for free as Governor. He didn't feel it was right to take a salary while the state was in the red. Maybe Obama should try that while he runs up the country debt. I'm sure he could live of his millions.
Taxes are progressive because of what has going on since Reagan. The more you make, the more of the infrastructure you have leveraged to make those sums. No you didn't make that on your own. @Okie Joe - Romney was self-employed so while he didn't have 'earned income' reported on a W2, he did have business income of $593,000 that is taxed as 'earned income'.
@baylee - you asked how do you know what Romney paid in federal taxes, as Okie Joe said, google his tax return. It is online and for 2010 the Romneys paid ~$3,009,000 in federal income taxes.
@livinginthewoods - for you to have paid 30% in federal taxes, you would have to have made a minimum of $520,000 (and that is assuming only the standard & personal exemptions with no other deductions like state taxes, mortgage interest or property taxes, charitable contributions, etc.).

That's a lie. There's a site, icasualties . org , which includes a year by year count of fatalities for both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Total of about 6593 fatalities in both fields of operation. 1741 since 2009, which includes fatalities in early 2009 that Obama really had no control over, leaving 4852 under Bush.
Fatalities have come down rapidly since 2010. Peak was 1021 fatalities in 2007. 599 in 2010; 472 in 2011, and 244 so far in 2012.

It is quite obvious that you are having difficulty keeping up with the latest research reports on the results of "Voter Fraud". It's either that, or else you are simply naive, wear “Rose Colored Glasses”, or just the typical blatant Republican manipulator. There have been numerous recent reports/articles (to include Fixed Fox News) commenting that out of the 305 million cases of alleged voter fraud reported, only a small insignificant, infinitesimal amount of voter fraud was found to be invalid. Try just 85 illegal cases out of 305 million (roughly 2 election cycles) were found to have been invalid. FL had just 4 or 5 invalid votes. Wow! What a waste of money, and time (not to mention the political corruption). And the invalid votes were not all illegal aliens that so many of the manipulators declared aloud with such vehement diligence. You can't take polls on the Internet that show anything close to reality. We still have too many poor or just too many people that don't have a clue how to or interest in the computer or electronic devices to cast a vote.
Then, of course we will have voter suppression which will isolate the poor and some middle class, blacks, mexican and others that have no transportation or the time away from work to vote. This is the RNC dream that few will vote.

Cashing checks, having a job or being in the hospital are not prerequisites to voting. If you were born in this country, are over 18 and have not been recently convicted of a felony offense, then you are eligible to vote. It does not matter if someone lives up to your standards or not, one little bit.

CNN is in the tank for Obama. Nobody trusts them and their ratings show it. Romney hasn't even begun to spend their budget and the polls have him even by likely voters. Obama could be out of money in October. He has been spending more than he had coming in trying to distance himself before the conventions. It didn't work. Now, Romney still has his money with more coming in. Obama outspent McCain by 2:1 but it won't be like that this year. The economy is not the President's job to fix. That goes against every principle of a free market and capitalism. Interesting how so many republicans blame the President for not fixing the economy and then clamor they want to reduce government. It's not his to fix. It is the American people's job to create businesses and jobs. He has tried to help companies that keep work in the US to help them create jobs and has been blocked by republicans. Make up your minds.
When you have billionaires contributing $100M to the Republican PAC's to get the White House back in the fold, as well as keep the HoR and recapture the Senate so they can, once again, manage to get the tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations while putting all of the burden on the middle class, poor, and small business, obviously there will be an "indication" of a larger amount of "social media" interest for the Republicans than Democrats. When you can afford to hire huge staffs to go on line and blitz them, what do you expect?
The same thing can be said for the bogus polls as far as I'm concerned...who are these people even talking to? Have ANY of you even been called by an INDEPENDANT group, like from the NYT/NBC? I certainly haven't, and neither has anyone I known, EVER, and I've been voting for over 40 years.

The bottom line is that polls are for newscasters and political camps, not voters. Most voters have made their minds up long ago, and there is probably less than 10% of the people who will actually vote who are still undecided unless something drastically changes between now and election day. The difference is; those Bain employee campaign donations, totaling approx. $100,000 since 2007 (hardly one of Obama's biggest donors, not even close) are a matter of public record via the FEC & not undisclosed funding linked to the management team of a company promoting a product & the candidate from whence that funding originated.
And in my dreams, I slightly prefer Jennifer Aniston over my wife...then I wake up and I deal with the realities I'm faced with. Who cares who people prefer when there isn't any cost for a bad decision. When it's time to be accountable, that is when it is important. I look at the two and see Obama continuing to be hampered by a Congress that won't "deal" with each other and I see Romney who looks like he is still snickering about being chosen at all but without anyone liking or believing in him.
