President Barack Obama says Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues, but the presumptive Republican nominee says the Democratic incumbent has left the American people no better off than they were four years ago.
In an interview with The Associated Press that was released Saturday, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.
Obama in the interview appeared to be trying to pre-empt the Republican National Convention opening Monday in Tampa.

"I can't speak to Governor Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."
The president cited Romney's call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney's opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa.
And Obama alluded to the abortion issue, thrust to the fore this week when Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin said the female body has a way to "shut that whole thing down" when a woman is the victim of "legitimate rape."
The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not "stand in the way" if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.
Romney is on record, however, as not opposing abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life.
Political analysts Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, and Karen Finney, former communications director for the Democratic National Committee, discuss the impending Republican National Convention, the storm, the "birther" comments and the Romney campaign's effort to stay on message to win the nomination.
Obama also focused in the AP interview on the economy and he spoke of a middle-class revival.
"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that," said Obama, who inherited an economy in free fall and now bears responsibility for a recovery that remains weak. "But Governor Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class," the president said.
The Romney campaign jumped on Obama's "we aren’t where we need to be" line.
"Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," said campaign spokesman Ryan Williams. "The American people know they aren’t better off than they were four years ago."
Obama also offered the AP a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."
Mitt Romney ignited controversy in his native Michigan Friday with an off-the-cuff comment he says was intended as a joke, but that the Obama administration is calling a direct invocation of a highly charged issue. NBC News' Peter Alexander reports.
Williams accused Obama of adding trillions to the national debt, blocking domestic energy production, and presiding over high chronic unemployment.
"He promised to change how Washington works, but he admits the nation's capital is as broken as ever," Williams said. "He raided Medicare to pay for Obamacare and is proposing massive tax increases that will kill jobs and hurt our economy. Too many middle-class families are going to sleep each night worried about the future. This may be the best President Obama can do, but it’s not the best America can do. The Romney-Ryan plan for a stronger middle class will jump start our economy and create 12 million new jobs – and most importantly, give Americans hope for a better future."

Fact# Under 55% of americans pay any kind of taxes, let alone get lots of taxes back for all the incentives.
Fact# Illegals getting taxes back and not paying in.
Fact# I make just under 100k and pay 25% taxes and get noting back at tax time.
Fact# So who pays for the rest of the taxes and the sponsors for youth activities, heatlh fund raisers, I could go on and on. So the rice is the answer. Make the ones not paying in, stop getting tax returns for what, and illegals should go back and come across the correct way and stop sending all the money they make here back to homeland. If Obama means that like millions of other Americans Romney wants the Constitution respected and utilized as it was intended I agree. The GOP sent over 30 jobs bills over to the senate only to have them set on Reid's desk. Maybe the senate would have voted them down, but Reid wouldn't even allow a discussion.

To blame this administrations woes on the Bush Administration shows the lack of understanding of how the American Government system works. It is the congress that passes the spending bills and if you look the last two years of Bush and the first two years of Obama it had a super majority of Democrats that allowed it to pass bills without being blocked by the Republicans. To blame them for the problems brought on by the liberal left and the spend until we go broke is what brought us to this point. Not stating that Bush was without fault, he was by no means a good president for budget matters, the problem is that we went from bad to worse with Obama. And rather then trying to fix anything Obama has done from day one (which shows how not up to the task of being President he is), he has never accepted any responsibility or blame for his many failures. To focus on a national health care when we were in the midst of our worst economic downturn instead of the economy shows his ineptness to handling the situation. What we need to do is to get out the Amateur and bring in someone who actually will listen to his advisers and knows how to run a business, and this by no means is Obama who has not worked outside of community organizing or the government all his life. Come November the best thing we can do for our country is to see to it that he has no more time to mess things up.

While you are checking out Reids desk..look and see just kind of bills have been sent to the full congress...then tell me just how many jobs any of them would have created . AS for Romney..he has been great at outsourcing jobs..and feel sure he will continue to do so since much of his own money is in other countries. That of course will be after he cuts his own taxes out completely.

The title of this article would be more accurate if it read, "More BS From the President". Apparently balancing the budget is now an extreme position for the President. Well what about the Promises that the President made on the economy?
I want the President to come clean on the promises he made on the economy. The President said that the stimulus "did its job" but according to a report issued by the President's own administration, unemployment has been worse than if the stimulus had never been passed. What did we get from those shovel ready jobs that the stimulus paid for?
I want the President to discus the trade deficit that just keeps increasing. The federal government keeps trying to stimulate the economy by flooding it with cash but it all leaks out because such a high percentage of the goods and services that we buy come from foreign countries. The current administration has had no success in improving the situation.
The President went on and on as to how bad deficit spending was. Without conditions of any kind to include any act of congress, the President vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. Well, this is the end of his first term. To keep the President's promise the federal deficit for this year, 2012, cannot exceed 229.27 billion dollars yet the President's own White House is predicting that the deficit will exceed 1.2 trillion dollars. The President also promised transparency. I want the President to explain what magic he is going to perform between now and the end of the fiscal year in order to keep his promise to the American people.
I estimate that the money the federal government is borrowing today will end up costing the tax payers more than 9 times the amount borrowed to repay over the next 170 years. That is just my estimate. I want the President to present a plan for repaying all of the money that it owes. The tax payers have a right to know how much all this federal borrowing is going to end up costing them.
The President needs to be reminded of some words of wisdom that were spoken back in March of 2006. The words are as true today as they were then.
The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.
And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.
Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities. Instead,interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans–a debt tax that Washington doesn’t want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies.
Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

I can't find any reason to believe Romney and his running mate on anything but a continuance of the Bush/Cheney policies. That's who they are on steroids.

I'm one of those that is disappointed in Obama but that doesen't mean I want the nation to commit political and economic suicide by giving the Far Right yet another chance at completely destroying our democracy.
The Democrats need at least a decade to unravel the mess made by Bush/Cheney and it will give the Republicans a chance to again embrace REAL conservatism which is sourly needed.
The two greatest presidents of the modern era were Roosevelt "D" and Eisenhower "R". Eisenhower was the first I was old enough to vote for and they simply do not have anyone like him in politics today.

First of all, Democrats had to get some concessions, and since tax hikes were off defense cuts were the only way to go. And the House Republicans want to replace the defense cuts (which we NEED because we are spending TOO MUCH on defense) with more social spending cuts.

First of all, the debt is not a drag on economic growth (at least not now). Secondly, you should not look at the amount the debt is; you ought to look at the ratio of debt to GDP, which is a little over 100% (only if you include the debt to Social Security and other intra-government debt; the external debt is around 70%). Thirdly, Democrats have several budgets ready, mostly in the House though.
First of all, we already have $2.2 trillion in scheduled cuts; it's about time we start talking about more revenues. If you want anymore cuts, you and your stupid party are gonna have to compromise and accept tax hikes. Secondly, we cannot cut and tax our way out of this economic mire; we need to spend money in the short-term to boost demand while cutting our deficit over the long-term. And thirdly, name me one time when those "down the road-cuts" never happened.
Actually, since that is impossible (once you factor in inflation and economic growth), the real question is wouldn't it be nice for him to recommend we go back to his level of tax rates.

And by the way, two or three deficit proposals were on the table before the downgrade, including Obama's deal and the Gang of Six package. The Gang of Six had more tax increases than Obama did, so House Speaker Boehner decided to work with Obama instead of the Gang of Six. Obama had $2.8 trillion in cuts and $1.2 trillion in higher revenues, for a roughly 3:1 margin in favor of Republicans. S&P wanted at least $4 trillion in savings. Boehner liked it (even after Obama "moved the goal posts" to placate his base), but his puppet-master Eric Cantor and his Tea Party idiots refused to compromise with Obama and said no. With the grand bargain off the table and the Treasury (and Congress) in disarray, lawmakers scrambled together $2.2 trillion in spending cuts to lower the deficit. Unfortunately, S&P didn't think that was sufficient and downgraded us; in the damn statement they blamed a lack of agreement between BOTH parties (even though Obama and the Dems were willing to sacrifice a little to get the deal done) as the cause for the downgrade. So don't even think about saying that Obama caused the downgrade, because it was your buddies in the freaking Tea Party caucus that screwed up the deal. If you know the definition of compromise, you would understand that the Obama deal was MORE than a compromise.
Like I said before, he offered a $4 trillion deal. Go and look it up on the White House website if you want...

I think Bill Clinton's ad very accurately describes Obama when he said that Obama “Obama has a plan to rebuild this country from the ground up…” And we all know that Clinton is very careful with the words he chooses to use. Just look at any piece of real estate. When someone says they are going to rebuild it from the ground up, what's the first thing they have to do? Yup, you have to destroy what is there so you can start from scratch. Talk about an accurate description of Obama's first 4 years! Couldn't have said it any better myself. So, even Clinton admits that Obama is purposely trying to destroy this country. Of course, a lot of us knew that without Clinton confirming it, but it's good to know that even those on the left agree.
When you read between the lines of the posts critcizing President Obama the pattern is always the same. They use every Republican/Fox News talkiing point and lie as their argument. The evil the right wing in this country represents is more dangerous to America than any terrorist organization could ever be.
President Obama is the president that saved this country from going into a deep dark depression. He also killed Americas greatest enemy Osama Bin Laden. Yeah, Jimmy Carter was the last US President to preside over an increase in our national debt of less than $500 billion in a single term in office, and all but $5.9 trillion of our current almost $16 trillion national debt occurred under the guidance of just three Republican tax-cutting Presidents, Reagan, Bush Sr, and Bush Jr.
So, if you are upset at runaway deficits, then you should be mad as heck at the Republicans, and more than willing to support restoring higher tax rates to higher income Americans, which will force them to invest in America in order to try to mitigate those high tax rates some! What was worse for America, Reagan's nearly $3 trillion in debt, GW's, or Obama's, since Reagan's debt came when our Dollar bought triple of what it does now? Yes, adjusted for inflation, Reagan's debt would be $9 Trillion today.
Some people say that the Democrats know nothing about business, but here in Colorado, under Democrat leadership for the last 25 years, our State has doubled in population, and our largest urban area has almost tripled in size, and even though metro-Denver is only 3/4ths the size of metro-Detroit, we have America's 5th-busiest major airport here too.
Any of you Republicans remember that $2.1 trillion in inter-governmental borrowing that GW saddled us all with, which includes nearly 70% of all funds ever borrowed from the Social Security trust fund, which was on-top of his $4.7 trillion in reported deficit? Did you know that the worst-ever single year deficits this country has ever seen came at the hand of GW, as when his inter-governmental borrowing is included, 2008 saw a deficit of $1.8 trillion, 75% of it stolen directly from the retirement security of hundreds of millions of Americans in order to falsely inflate the economy, benefiting well less than half of America by then, and also to cover-up all of Haliburton's graft in Iraq?
I hate to have to say this, as I am a member of the top 10% myself, but anyone among the bottom 80% of America would be absolutely stupid to think that this time somehow will be different with the Republicans back in power, who only want to make themselves rich at the gross expense of everyone else, who they could care very little about.
I just love how the right says that the stimulate package didn't work, when in fact in kept us from a depression, it saved over 2million jobs. Has anyone REALLY looked at Ryan's budget, it would not only give more tax breaks to the rich, at the expense of the middle class, poor, elder, disabled, but would also add 14 TRILLION to the budget deficit.
The REALLY problem is the Republican/Tea-party Congress, the party of filibusters, and the party of no. Its time to vote them out, and then maybe something can get done.

Is Obama kidding!!!! How much more extreme can you get than violating the separation of powers clause in the Constitution by using an executive order to tell the Justice Department and ICE not to enforce immigration laws. How much more extreme can you get than giving work permits to an estimated 1.8 million illegals when we have well over 15 million legal Americans unemployed. Obama did not agree with the no child left behind law, which admittedly has it's flaws. Instead of working with congress to get the law changed Obama simply issued and executive order telling his education department to start issuing waivers to complying with the laws. Of course there is no provisions for waivers in the law. Obama simply decided to tell his administration to violate federal law because he did not like the law. Obama is acting like a dictator, not a president. He has repeatedly used executive orders to override duly passed federal statutes because he does not agree with them. When he can not get Congress to pass the laws he wants because the Congress knows the American people do not want them, Obama simply issues an executive order to his administration to ignore the current law and do what Obama says.
Obama claims to be trying to help business and the middle class however the huge growth in new regulations during his administration is stifling business growth. Obama touts his huge accomplishment with the health care law and talks about all these new people who will be covered. What he has failed to tell people is that he did it by gutting Medicare. To pay for his health care law Obama is going to cut the payments doctor receive from Medicare to the point where any doctor worth a @!$%# is no longer going to accept Medicare. There is no requirement for any doctor to accept Medicare and under Obamacare those who rely on Medicare are going to be forced to settle for second rate doctors because the good ones are no longer going to accept patients for the pittance Medicare will be paying them. Obamacare has not fixed health care, it will create a two tier health care system where those on Medicare have to settle for second rate care because it is all that will be available to them.
As bad as Obama has been with using executive orders to ignore federal laws and pushing his failed policies during his first term it can get worse. If Obama is reelected imagine what it will be like when he no longer has to worry about ever getting elected again. The extremeness of his policies and actions will get that much worse. This country simply can not afford four more years of Obama. I am not a huge fan of Romney, but I will take him over an Obama second term any day!!!
Romney has only released 1 tax return. Filed for an extension on last year's, I wonder why? Lots of candidates for president give a dozen years of returns for scrutiny. The only reason not to is when you've got something to hide.
Ryan Williams says Romney will create 12 million jobs. Since there is no policy from Romney other than a $5 Trillion tax giveaway, mostly to the rich, and Bush proved that a large tax giveaway does not create jobs, what oriface did he pull these numbers out of?

The title of this article would be more accurate if it read, "More BS From the President". Apparently balancing the budget is now an extreme position for the President. Well what about the Promises that the President made on the economy?
I want the President to come clean on the promises he made on the economy. The President said that the stimulus "did its job" but according to a report issued by the President's own administration, unemployment has been worse than if the stimulus had never been passed. What did we get from those shovel ready jobs that the stimulus paid for?
I want the President to discus the trade deficit that just keeps increasing. The federal government keeps trying to stimulate the economy by flooding it with cash but it all leaks out because such a high percentage of the goods and services that we buy come from foreign countries. The current administration has had no success in improving the situation.
The President went on and on as to how bad deficit spending was. Without conditions of any kind to include any act of congress, the President vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. Well, this is the end of his first term. To keep the President's promise the federal deficit for this year, 2012, cannot exceed 229.27 billion dollars yet the President's own White House is predicting that the deficit will exceed 1.2 trillion dollars. The President also promised transparency. I want the President to explain what magic he is going to perform between now and the end of the fiscal year in order to keep his promise to the American people.
I estimate that the money the federal government is borrowing today will end up costing the tax payers more than 9 times the amount borrowed to repay over the next 170 years. That is just my estimate. I want the President to present a plan for repaying all of the money that it owes. The tax payers have a right to know how much all this federal borrowing is going to end up costing them.
The President needs to be reminded of some words of wisdom that were spoken back in March of 2006. The words are as true today as they were then.
The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.
And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.
Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities. Instead,interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans–a debt tax that Washington doesn’t want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies.
Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

since 1968, the republicans have run this country except for one term with carter, two with clinton and now obama. that makes 28 years out of 44. i've been around the whole time and this is what i saw. since the 1970s wages have stagnated, corporations have taken their workforce out of the u.s., taxes have gone higher, we've been involved in the vietnam war, the gulf war, invasion of grenada, the first iraqi war, the 2nd iraqi war and afghanistan. the vietnam war was escalated by johnson while all the other conflicts were under republican control.
i have watched while families that used to be able to rely on the husband working and the mother staying home to take care of the children, it quickly became necessary for women to work whether they wanted to or not just to make ends meet. and women have had to fight tooth and nail just to make close to the same amount of money as their male counterparts. today, our wages have flatlined while the ceos and executives of the uberrich corporations are taking home records bonuses and pensions. our social security was robbed under a republican. the radical religious right has made inroads into our freedoms never seen before until now anyone who professes freedom of religion is looked on like some unamerican, socialist.
i don't actually remember when teddy roosevelt worked so hard for the working class and the environment, i'm not that old, but i do remember learning about his great accomplishments in the FREE school i went to. now, my son has to pay $700 a month to make sure his daughter gets a decent education because the republicans are bleeding the public school system dry and want to turn education into a for profit institution set aside for the rich. i was proud to call myself a republican because i was a person of faith who truly believed and still do that the creator of the universe gave us this planet to be stewards over and that comes with responsibility and respect. i believed in the freedom and equality that i came to understand by living in the one state in the union that claimed it was the 'equality state. -' Wyoming. i'm not proud of what it has become.
i didn't just change my party affiliation in the 90s. i ran from it as fast as i could because the republican party i had come to respect died during that decade. it sold its collective soul to the radical religious right and the super corporations who care nothing for the people. and i saw that the people were slowing being lulled into a mind set of instant gratification and that persists to this day and is getting worse. i saw that the congress spent more time trying to destroy the president than anything else, to the tune of 30million dollars. and they spent their time feeding the pigs of corporate america all the while sowing the seeds of hatred by making the everyday, hardworking american look like the bad guy because he/she belonged to a union. suddenly it became unamerican to want a decent day's wage for a decent day's work. suddenly it became unamerican to believe in freedom of speech, taking care of the environment, wanting to breathe clean air or drink clean water. suddenly, it became unamerican to say anything, even if it were true against the president...until obama became president.

Romney and Ryan will absolutely ruin this country and all she stands for. The do-nothing Congress has been ruined by Republicans who have said they would strike down anything passed by Democrats (usually regardless of whether or not it would benefit Americans who are not in the 1%). I actually feel a bit bad for Romney because his own party is screwing him over better than most attacks from the Democratic party.
Mitt has messed up his own campaign more than once: Bain capital, lack of tax returns, lies, has absolutely no skills in dealing with foreign affairs and has already pissed off numerous countries, embarrassing America on foreign soil and apologizing to the foreign countries (Obama never had to apologize for anything America did), his wife came out with the great one-liner "you people," aligning himself with extreme policies, actively trying to take away women's rights (Ryan, too), flip-flopped on numerous issues, proposes plans that will be both ineffective and would lead to a significant increase in the national debt (this part is for Ryan), etc.
I don't want that nut-job in office. Romney and Ryan will just be another repeat of the "Bush Jr. era" and that is the last thing our country needs! Congress would become far more extreme than it is now (imagine Akin in Congress). We need more moderate people who are actually looking out for the American people. We do not need people who put their political parties needs and views before those of the American people.
We know Romney brought an Olympics to success in 2 years, assuming the helm after those games games were in distress. Prior to Olympic service, Romney directed Bain Capital one of the most successful efforts in history, and created hundreds of thousands of jobs saving company after company in nearly every state in the union from going under.
We know that Obama has spent Trillions of dollars that don't exist and consequently 50% of black youth are now unemployed, only one example. Twelve million Americans are now unemployed or under-employed that were working productively under Bush II, and American coal and oil have been brought to a standstill under Obama.
Gas is at $4 a gallon more than double what it was under Bush II.
In June Obama added 1.6 million illegal immigrants to the job seakers list by executive order, yet only 160,000 new job openings were provided. Millions of new college graduates this June cannot get a job.

They said govenment couldn't create jobs but now they are going on and on about the budget cuts for defense saying it will destroy jobs. You can't have it both ways. They just wanted to block jobs as long as it didn't interfere with their other plans.

With their, Romney/Ryan, proposed big tax cuts for the wealthiest people and corporations who are "people" too, increase in the defense spending and saying assume this & that are going to be just as we say without anything to back it up, the analysts say even with those assumptions they can't cut the deficit in 30 years (Ryan's projection) even with eliminating every tax loophole and program that helps the middle class and poor (including the analysts that Romeny praised and now decrys). You know they are not going to close any of their precious loopholes that help their (Romney & Ryan) taxes or those of their extremely wealthy backers. After all Bain Capital paid a lot of lobbyists a lot of money to get some of those loopholes.
Did you see how well they (the Republicans) worked with President Obama regarding reducing the deficit? Kept walking out of the talks. Repub. Senator George Voinovich says he was given marching orders by Senator McConnell: "If [President Obama] was for it, we had to be against it. All he cared about was making sure Obama could never have a clean victory." This was the policy before those budget talks, so no surprise there. If they compromised in any way it would be viewed as a something positive for the President. Block it! Block it! Block it! Help the people of this country if they aren't rich? Block it and we will take over the House, Senate and White House in the next election!

First of all I doubt you were a Republican but now you have found the light being a Democrat if you are of Faith. Be that as it may you need to work on your history and realize one major thing. For as much as you Liberals/Progressives claim you want to move Forward you certainly dwell on the good ole days. What you need to understand, and more importantly accept, is many of those days are long gone.
First of all, it took mankind until 1960 to populate our planet with 3 billion people simultaneously. Today, a mere 50 years later, we have added 4 billion more people. This is not your granddaddies world anymore. Our most prosperous time was post WW II as most of the industrialized world laid in ruins and beaten down by a 10 year Depression. We, and the rest of the world, needed to rebuild. And rebuild we did.
Through much of that time that you so reminisce about when we had a single wage-earner was simply because we, as a nation lived within our means. The words--saving, thrift and responsibility--were still meaningful. The average size of a home was 1,000 sq/ft. Today it is about 2,500 sq/ft. This, while the size of the family has actually decreased. In 1960 the average household size was 3.33, today it is 2.63. One concerning aspect is that we will have a surge in population due to the millennials that will rival the Baby-Boomers. The reason I say it’s a concern is because we will have to find them employment soon. Why do we want a bigger house? Simple, we have bastardized the “American Dream” and replaced it with “Keeping up with the Jones’s”. It quickly became necessary to have 2 income earners because we wanted more. We didn’t necessarily “need” more, we wanted more.
Now remember, as we grew as a nation, so was the rest of the world. To think we were always going to be the only major industrial nation and exporter is jingoism at its most extreme. The other 4 billion people growing in the world need to be productive also. The days of the unskilled, untrained, illiterate worker making $70+ dollars/hr (with benefits and legacy costs) are long gone. Those were the days when a single wage earner was plausible. Yes, there is a wage discrepancy between the CEO’s and hourly wage earner. This was actually most evident during the 1990’s. In 1990 the CEO-to-worker ratio was about 53:1, by 2000 it was 411:1. I don’t think Bush or any other Republican was President back then, right? Granted it has dropped during the 2008 recession but it is climbing again. You have to realize much of our industry that employed the unwashed masses in the past won’t come back here for a long time, if ever. There are 6.7 billion people in the world willing to do what we did for much less. This is not wrong. They are going through the same low wage, no benefit growing pains we did as our industrial strngth grew. They have every right to do it, as did we. When corporations began to innovate, automate and decentralize the writing was on the wall. Remember, a business is created to make money for its workers and investors. That's how all businesses grow. If you have skills you can be competitive, if not you will faulter. We have to accept that the future of our economy will be based on education much more than ever.
Now this brings us to your travails about education. As much as you want to blame the Republicans for ”bleeding the public school system dry”, you have to get a grip. The United States spends more than any country other than Switzerland on education. We spend over $11,000 per student, yet we rank in the bottom 1/3 in reading, math and science as compared to other OECD countries. In 2004, the U.S. Congress set up a voucher program for low income minority students in Washington D.C. to attend private schools. The Washington D.C. public school district spends $12,979 per student per year. The vouchers were $7,500 per student per year. The parents said their children were receiving a much better education from the private schools. In 2007, Washington D.C. non-voting delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat, said she wanted the voucher program to be eliminated, and that the public schools needed more money.
During the 2006–2007 school year, a private school in Chicago founded by Marva Collins to teach low income minority students charged $5,500 for tuition, and parents said that the school did a much better job than the Chicago public school system. However, Collins' school was forced to close in 2008 due to lack of sufficient enrollment and funding. Meanwhile, during the 2007–2008 year, Chicago public school officials claimed that their budget of $11,300 per student was not enough.
Obviously money is NOT the problem. The problem is we have a totally dysfunctional government run education system that changes with every new administration that is elected. We have become more concerned with Chicago Style Math, No Child Left Behind, our children learning how to put condoms on a cucumber and to teach them about "Adam and Steve".
According to a 2006 study by the Goldwater Institute, Arizona's public schools spend 50% more per student than Arizona's private schools. The study also says that while teachers constitute 72% of the employees at private schools, they make up less than half of the staff at public schools. According to the study, if Arizona's public schools wanted to be like private schools, they would have to hire approximately 25,000 more teachers, and eliminate 21,210 administration employees. Unless we decide to get rid of our criminal government Department of Education and the Teachers Unions finally become more concerned with our children’s educations rather than their members union dues we will continue graduating illiterates from our K-12 system.
When most Americans read at an 8th grade level, most high-school graduates don’t know how to use—there, their or they’re—correctly in a sentence, most high school graduates can’t calculate 40% of 330 in their head it doesn’t matter how easy we make it to get in college. Our nation will fail. I was at a town hall meeting a couple years ago in Detroit, there was a mother there in tears because her 6th grade daughter spelled girl, g-u-r-l. Our government and the criminal unions are failing our children. I would recommend you worry more about the “BLOB” (BLOated education Bureaucracy) or as I like to call it, the “education industrial complex” more than the Military Industrial Complex. At least our military will protect you, our government run education system will cause our eventual collapse without a shot being fired.
Your blaming the Social Security mess on Republicans is incorrect also. LBJ changed the accounting method we used in the past when there actually was a S.S. Fund and a lock box. He did it so he could write off the cost of the War in Vietnam. Every President since has manipulated the accounting method. You don’t actually believe Clinton left us a mythical “surplus” do you? That was just manipulating the Public Debt and Intragovernmental Holdings, which makes up our National Debt.
Your advocacy for unions is commendable but not well founded. The unions have just become another political arm of the Liberal/Progressive cabal. Name one thing the unions have done to improve workplace safety or outcomes in the past 25 years (FMLA doesn’t count, it was a government program). Today we have a massive government Department of Labor, OSHA, Minimum Wage Laws and other controls. Unions only effect over the past 25 year is the over $4 trillion in unfunded pension plans that are causing one city after another to declare bankruptcy. Unions must become industry supportive and bear part of the load during times of economic contracture to be viewed as truly involved. Spending billions of dollars from union dues on political corruption is NOT what unions function is.
And please, please stop with the incessant indoctrinated blathering about Republicans wanting dirty air, water and nuclear waste in your children’s bedrooms. You sound more and more insignificant. We have 144,000 pages, and growing, in the Federal Code of Regulations. What good are they when we don’t enforce them or severely punish offenders. We can emulate the middle class prosperity of the postwar era; yet we need to update the formula that we have used to achieve prosperity so we can compete in the modern world.
Not necessarily. While yes, the concept of saving money has declined, it did not entirely come from the "bastardization" of the American Dream. Part of it came from the fact that middle class wages have been stagnant since the 1970s, barely increasing with the cost of living. And other costs, like college, have skyrocketed, leaving millions heavily in debt. Not to mention the fact that as wealthiest Americans began to expand their consumption, a "trickle-down" effect occurred, encouraging everyone else to splurge in order to keep up socially.
True, true. Yet we didn't necessarily have to fall back to the middle of the pack that fast and neglect our education and infrastructure; if anything, we should have pushed harder. In addition, we didn't need to push so hard on the free trade pedal; we should have slowed in down after globalization increased rapidly in the 1980s and 90s.
Yes, that is true. HOWEVER, I still think we braked too hard on letting our education and manufacturing advantage to go to waste. We shouldn't have advocated free trade when we realized that other countries weren't playing fairly; we probably should have just copied other nations until they agreed to disarm with us. Nor should we have lowered our spending on research and development; we probably should have increased it. In addition, income inequality in America is by far the most discrepant in ANY developed nation; quite simply, we need to raise taxes and bring unions back to power in order to raise middle class wages and decrease income inequality, which IS a major economic issue.
Money has to be reprioritized. Yet we still need more teachers in the schools, as you pointed out. Yet we do not need to cut spending for education like crazy. Instead, we need to shift priorities on funding, reform the curriculum and the teaching methods, and start making sure that we hire the best teachers and pay them a salary based on their merit. Personally, I say have the federal government fund public education (including public colleges) and then reform the system using education experts from both here and the top 10 nations in education attainment and cost-effectiveness. That way we can fix the system and lower costs WITHOUT making blind cuts.
I personally don't see how less government will work when it comes to education. Yes, maybe we should start getting advise from people like private sector experts (and officials from other nations), but that doesn't mean that we have to resort to charter schools (which statistically don't do much better than public schools) and vouchers. We should fix the system from the inside out, not let the system fix itself. We did the same thing with the banks by letting them regulate themselves, and regardless of your political background there is ample proof that that method failed miserably.

Unions are Democratic, yet you cannot entirely blame them. The very progressives and liberals that you demonize are the same ones that allowed unions to become legal and increase the standard of living for millions of Americans. And conservatives tend to support management, which (whether you like it or not) have waged a 30-year war on unions, and are currently winning. Unions have shrunken from 30% of the total working population to about 12%, and that includes the public sector unions. Unions ARE bearing the burdens of both globalization AND anti-labor laws. In order to make unions more reasonable when it comes to public finance, you have to bring them back to power in the private sector so they at least have something to gain. You cannot tell unions to be reasonable without allowing them to grow. And by the way, union membership in countries like Germany and Canada are at about 30%, which largely contributes to their strong manufacturing sectors (as unions provide a check to outsourcing companies) and vibrant middle classes (as unions generally wage raises for everyone).
The federal regulatory code is bloated and needs overview, but that does not mean gutting environmental and safety regulations just to please some corporate execs. We have to make regulations smarter, but we cannot simply cut them willy-nilly; that is what led to financial crisis.

Just because these programs are in a financial crisis DOES NOT mean that we have to get rid of them (or privatize them). There are numerous ways that we can fix them. For Social Security, we should just eliminate the payroll cap on employees and raise the tax by 2% points (and then index the retirement age to life expectancy starting in 2016).
Actually, the Social Security fix that I just mentioned (which is a liberal idea) would keep SS solvent for the next 75 years. As for Medicare, I would simply allow it to negotiate drug prices, reduce waste and fraud by having a commission root it out, pay doctors and hospitals by the quality of care that they give, and have Medicare sanction (or threaten to sanction) all for-profit care providers until they reduce their costs (for the meantime, Medicare will deal with non-profits like Kaiser Permanente).
No, that is what America USED to offer. Now, if your wealthy enough, you can buy the whole damn government. If your middle class, your wages are stagnant thanks to anti-labor policies and massive tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. And if your poor, well chances are you are going to STAY poor.
And yet for 30 years the wealthy have received tax cuts and benefited from a massive redistribution of wealth to the top. And by the way, taxes are the LOWEST in 50 years; the American people have been living on the fallacy that they can enjoy all the benefits of good government while paying little in taxes. I say raise taxes ON EVERYBODY to make things fair.
Unfortunately, the only way to improve your standard of living (assuming that you're middle class, which I think that you are) is to return power to the unions, increase taxes (especially on the wealthy), reform education and healthcare, and re-regulate Wall Street, and chances are people are going to be negatively affected by that.
Technically, the American way is that everybody gets an equal chance at success; in order to ensure an equal chance of success, you have to reduce chances for the rich (since you cannot raise chances for everybody else to that of the wealthy).

Lets set the premise for this conversation: A business is there to make a profit.
1. Businesses are constantly looking for ways to up their bottom line.
2. Why would a business hire more workers when it can gain an increase in profit due to lower taxes?
3. Employees cost businesses tax money. There are a small number of credits available currently to help offset taxes for companies, most of them from Obama.
In the end employees cost any company a lot more than just wages.
4. Realizing that employees cost any company money, why would any business hire more employees if they received a tax break from the Romney/Ryan plan? They wouldn't. Companies will simply keep the workforce they have, pocket the savings and move forward.
Politicians are people, its not hard to think for yourself and figure out the motives behind everyone. The moment you start glorifying your republican candidates you fail to observe objectively their actions. Use your head people. If you want continued forward progress then vote democratic.

It also guarantees seniors will have access to both Medicare and Medicaid at far lower costs than they are paying now. Obamacare would also make all medications far cheaper for seniors as well.
Obamacare will be better and offer many more benefits than medicare. Not only that but the parts about letting your children stay on your insurance until age 26 and forcing insurance companies to cover those with "preexisting conditions" are exactly what we we need. Insurance won't cover any expenses if your child was born with asthma or some other problem or defect because that is a "preexisting condition."

With few exceptions, Romney has failed to give any specifics on his policies. How will he create 18 million jobs? How will he fix the tax code as he has promised? In the last month, he has alternated between saying that his plan for Medicare is the same, and then different from Ryan's voucher plan... which is it?? I'd like to see someone make a list of all the extreme things Romney/Ryan intends to do in order to appease all his sugar-daddy overlords while simultaneously claiming that he will help the ever collapsing middle class. It is the Democratically controlled congress during the latter half of the Bush administration that had a lot to do with the economic downturn. Requiring banks to make bad loans turned out to be a not so good of an idea. But in general during the Bush administration the federal government tried to improve the economy by injecting more money but that did not work. The Obama administration has tried to inject even more money but that has not worked ether and we are left with this huge debt. Bringing fiscal sanity to the federal government is not too extreme but apparently the President does not feel that way.
The title of this article would be more accurate if it read, "More BS From the President". Apparently balancing the budget is now an extreme position for the President. Well what about the Promises that the President made on the economy?
I want the President to come clean on the promises he made on the economy. The President said that the stimulus "did its job" but according to a report issued by the President's own administration, unemployment has been worse than if the stimulus had never been passed. What did we get from those shovel ready jobs that the stimulus paid for?
I want the President to discus the trade deficit that just keeps increasing. The federal government keeps trying to stimulate the economy by flooding it with cash but it all leaks out because such a high percentage of the goods and services that we buy come from foreign countries. The current administration has had no success in improving the situation.
The President went on and on as to how bad deficit spending was. Without conditions of any kind to include any act of congress, the President vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. Well, this is the end of his first term. To keep the President's promise the federal deficit for this year, 2012, cannot exceed 229.27 billion dollars yet the President's own White House is predicting that the deficit will exceed 1.2 trillion dollars. The President also promised transparency. I want the President to explain what magic he is going to perform between now and the end of the fiscal year in order to keep his promise to the American people.
I estimate that the money the federal government is borrowing today will end up costing the tax payers more than 9 times the amount borrowed to repay over the next 170 years. That is just my estimate. I want the President to present a plan for repaying all of the money that it owes. The tax payers have a right to know how much all this federal borrowing is going to end up costing them.
The President needs to be reminded of some words of wisdom that were spoken back in March of 2006. The words are as true today as they were then.
The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.
And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.
Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities. Instead,interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans–a debt tax that Washington doesn’t want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies.
Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

In 2008 without conditions to include any action of congress Obama vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. He reaffirmed that pledge in 2009 as President. The stimulus was a big gamble that the President took to reignite the economy. According to a report concerning the stimulus issued by the Obama administration, unemployment has bill a little worse than if the stimulus were never passed. The gamble did not work and we have been left with huge deficits year after year. What the President said about deficit spending in 2006 does apply to today. I estimate that the money that the federal government is borrowing today is going to end up costing the tax payers 9 times the amount borrowed to repay over the next 170 years. The President has yet to provide a plan for repaying the National Debt. Obama's White House is predicting huge deficits for at least another decade. If anything Obama's 2006 speech was conservative about the potential damage that deficit spending can cause. We will have to pay the money back one way or another.

If a president want people to be better off after 4 years he needs to forget about insurance company administered health care. What should be discussed is to simply extend the medicare system to include younter people. Maybe move it from age 65 down to 60. In a few years, move it down to 55. The method and mechanism is already in place. The administrative cost is somewhere between 2 and 3% of money paid in. That compares with Blue Cross Blue Shield of MN which is allowed 20% of premium money paid in. It's obvious who is more cost efficient. We could use the 17% saved to put actual health care professionals to work caring for those who need it. We could save more by having medicare negotiate prices for drugs and other services, using their huge buying power for price advantage. We could help famlies care for their elderly parents at home instead of spending a fortune putting them in expensive nursing homes that they don't want to be in and where they are at huge risk of understaffing and neglect.

You are still going to pay for others healthcare. I work as a firefighter, and roughly 80 percent of the calls I go on are medical calls. We have a lot of people that we go to on a regular basis for medical calls. A small portion of these people really need emergency care while the majority of our regulars are people who abuse the system. Most of these people know the system, and they would rather get the free ambulance ride to the ER than pay any money for a cab. If you for one second believe that the system abusers are going to pay for a cab ride to get preventative medical care, I have some oceanfront property I will sell to you in western Wisconsin. The really bad part of it is that I work for a smaller department, and I just imagine how much of this crap goes on in big cities like New York or Chicago.

My daughter had a sprained ankle - without insurance her treatment would have cost over $3K. So what happens when that 40-50% decide not to go under any health care plan? Why of course our rates will go up with the addition of the previously "Uninsured" and our taxes will go up for those who will be covered under the medicaid program.
Now I am a firm believer in people being able to get health insurance. I believe that no one should be turned down for pre-exisiting conditions, but does that mean that they should be charged the same rates as otherwise healthy people would be charged?
I've been reading blogs for months now about how Obese people or smokers should be paying higher rates than others. I'd like know how many of the so called "Uninsurable" would be listed in either of those catagories, and find out just how sympathetic some of you would continue to be.

The title of this article would be more accurate if it read, "More BS From the President". Apparently balancing the budget is now an extreme position for the President. Well what about the Promises that the President made on the economy?
I want the President to come clean on the promises he made on the economy. The President said that the stimulus "did its job" but according to a report issued by the President's own administration, unemployment has been worse than if the stimulus had never been passed. What did we get from those shovel ready jobs that the stimulus paid for?
I want the President to discus the trade deficit that just keeps increasing. The federal government keeps trying to stimulate the economy by flooding it with cash but it all leaks out because such a high percentage of the goods and services that we buy come from foreign countries. The current administration has had no success in improving the situation.
The President went on and on as to how bad deficit spending was. Without conditions of any kind to include any act of congress, the President vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. Well, this is the end of his first term. To keep the President's promise the federal deficit for this year, 2012, cannot exceed 229.27 billion dollars yet the President's own White House is predicting that the deficit will exceed 1.2 trillion dollars. The President also promised transparency. I want the President to explain what magic he is going to perform between now and the end of the fiscal year in order to keep his promise to the American people.
I estimate that the money the federal government is borrowing today will end up costing the tax payers more than 9 times the amount borrowed to repay over the next 170 years. That is just my estimate. I want the President to present a plan for repaying all of the money that it owes. The tax payers have a right to know how much all this federal borrowing is going to end up costing them.
The President needs to be reminded of some words of wisdom that were spoken back in March of 2006. The words are as true today as they were then.
The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.
And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.
Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities. Instead,interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans–a debt tax that Washington doesn’t want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies.
Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

I can also argue that yes minimum wage laws like that set in the new deal hurt recovery, in fact most of the new deal prolonged the great depression not help end it. For the minimum wage for example if you set a wage too high, a wage greater then the output of a job then a busniess will stop providing jobs for that line of work. Unforunatley most minimum wage jobs are begining no experaince jobs with low output. Put a higher minmum wage then those who get hire can output and employers will either get rid of those postions or start seeking people with experiance. When this happens the youth and minoirtiy umeployment rises, and under Obama it's the higest it's ever been.
Stop and think historically for just a minute and you'll see the clear connections between the conservative far right wing's ideology and the way of life that predominated in the Dark Ages. The conservative Republican agenda is essentially motivated by a medieval way of thinking, and the consequences we suffer are much like the suffering of the Dark Ages.

When people don't have insurance, those of us who do end up paying higher premiums to cover it. The money has to come from somewhere. It cracks me up that you think I should have to pay for someone else's insurance instead of holding that person accountable for his/her own healthcare.

What about those who don't fall into this category? I know several young adults with minor or serious conditions that fall into the pre-existing condition category, including an adult over 60 who had kidney stones but is otherwise healthy (his diagnosis, although they passed on their own and were completely harmless, will always be considered a "pre-existing condition" for him). As it is now, these people, without jobs with insurance or being married to someone with health insurance would have to pay so much they would lose/have to sell their house within a year. If you're a breadwinner with a pre-existing condition, this means you can't just find a low-paying job with insurance, either.

The 716 Billion is not a streamline it is a flat out penalty to hospitals and doctors for trying to give seniors proper care, penalties for health providers if a person dis-charged from a hospital is re-admitted in thirty days, because Obama says no one should get sick again within thirty days if they where cared for properly the first time.
So if a person who is hospitalized for a heart attack is dis-charged and then has another heart related problem in thirty days the hospital and doctor is penalized for that patient being re-admitted.
There will be government panels to decide if a doctor ran to many tests on a patient and if the panel deems those test unnecessary the doctor will not be fully reimbursed.
Doctors will stop taking medicare patients due to not being paid and penalized.
This is just a very small part of how the AHC-ACT will cut that 716 billion condemning the elderly to insufficient care.

I am amused by the comments by all the liberal folks. The reality is Obama's aim is to make the US vunerable. He is accomplishing this by reducing and/or eliminating our military superiority, by spending us into oblivion, by remaking our healthcare system.
If you listen carefully to Obama in his own words, he tells you exactly why he should not be re-elected to another term.
As it stands Medicare will be gone by 2024 under Obama's stewardship. The savings will not come from reducing or eliminating waste. It comes from reducing provider reimburesement rates. Ultimately this will reduce the provider pool which result in rationing of resources. There will be a bi-partisan commission that will decide how care is rationed.
No man is perfect, however, Obama is so "flawed" that he should not be re-elected. We should focus on the performance of his failed Presidency. The true unemployment rate is about 20%.
Obama supports the occupy movement. Most liberals think of Obama's class warfare rhetoric is aimed only at the United States. The truth is the United States is the 1%, the rest of the world is the 99%. Obama wants to redistribute the wealth created by Capitalism in the United States to the rest of the world.

Then we have, Romney: stating as President I'll oppose amnesty, cut funding for sanctuary cities and secure our boarders. Fact is he didn't get tough on sanctuary cities as governor during his tenure. At least four Massachuetts cities enacted or renued legislation declaring themselves Sanctuaries for illegal immigrants and he did not oppose this.
Not to mention Romney hired an outfit to do yard work who employed illegal's to work for them.
Now for the record= in Fiscal 2011 alone- Immigration and customs enforcement bureau sent back nearly 400,000 illegal's.

The very next week Jostens shut down a plant in Mass. and sent the jobs to Mexico. They hired children and paid them less than a dollar an hr. It failed as we were very skilled. I'm going to repeat this again for the completely ignorant (which seems to be at least 1/3rd who post here).
Due to a Senate procedure called the "filibuster" Democrats did not have completely control for more than 7 months or so. The filibuster essentially prevents bills from coming to a vote in the Senate unless 3/5ths agree. Democrats did have 60 seats from July 2009 to February 2010, which was the period between the seating of Al Franken (due to the mess that was the MN Senate recounts), and the seating of Scott Brown (who replaced the late Ted Kennedy in a special election). As long as Republicans had at least 41 votes, they could keep anything they wished from coming from a vote, and they used the filibuster a record number of times. Among them, Republicans blocked numerous jobs bills from coming to a vote, knowing that Democrats would have passed them, and they couldn't have actual improvement because that would make Obama look like an effective president.
BTW, we are in a period of recovery--but the recovery is incredibly slow thanks to intransigence and the inability of Republicans to work across the aisle--even on traditionally bipartisan measures such as raising the debt ceiling (something Republicans never had problem with until now, no matter how outrageous the spending had been).
Obama has done remarkably well for a man with his head up his ass. Otherwise he sucks.

Do you think holding up an extension to the SS tax reduction to include demands to build the pipeline is in the best interest of the country ?? What if that had been allowed and then 6 months later it was found that NONE of that credit was made available for US consumption ?? Or better yet, we had a huge break in the pipeline that caused all ground water to become contaminated in our largest agricultural area ?? Now we have polluted water and polluted land and can not longer feed our populace properly. What do you republicans propose to FIX THAT !!!! ????

We know the life stories of just about every other Pres and KNOW a whole lot more about them then we ever really needed to about most. Obamas life in a lot of ways is a mystery. How did he ever even get the democratic nod??? No skills as a world leader, very litte experience in a national office at all etc.. etc.. Back in 2008 his ego and arrogance turned me completely off along with his fake promises and total BS!!! After 3+ years in office I dropped the Dems and reregistered as an Indpendent. Prior to president Obama taking office the Bush administration handed him the worse economy since the great depression. Not my words check speeches from the Bush administration when they were trying to get approval for the $700 Billion dollar bailout. President Obama turned the economy around in under a year we started seeing job growth. You right wing idiots hate him so much that you are willing to return to the policies that got us into this mess. I'm an IT professional and I made money when times were bad and good. IT has pretty much been shielded from the recession. Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for 2008 & 2009 as well as 2010 & 2011.
In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.
For 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the 2009 budget.
And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete 2009. Let's remember what the deficits looked like during that period:

JohnI, that is among the more ignorant postings about the President. Romney won't disclose earlier years of taxes because they probably have something not quite right in them. School transcripts are not sealed. If Obama wanted to get his transcripts, he could. Why should he release his school transcripts? No other candidate for President has had to produce their transcripts. President Obama was voted President of the Law Review, a position he could not have achieved had his grades not been top grades. I don't hear anyone calling for Romney's transcripts. This is subtle racist demand. Only the President has been asked to provide his birth certificate or school transcripts.

I think people all seemed missing several points:
If there is a law that requires a candidate to show tax returns of which ever number of years then the candidate should comply. Otherwise, it is petty and childish that someone made a claim that such and such candidate failed to pay tax in that number of years prior then that candidate has to run around to prove otherwise. Reid just wants to manipulate the common public's basic human feeling called "jealousy" of Romney's wealth. I am just a poor guy but I really don't care if Romney is well-off or not. All I care is to vote for a guy who can turn the economy around. Don't forget that the real issue we are facing is the stagnant economy. If one believes the unemployment figure is 8.3% one is either naive or uninformed. The unemployment figure is higher. The method of collecting or recording that figure is distorted.
(1) Romney filed taxes and if he cheated on his tax returns then he committed illegal acts, and IRS would have gone after him. Reid or anyone else especially Romney's political opponents made some claims about Romney's tax records just wanted to cause distractions of important issue which is the economic problem we are facing.
(2) Assuming that Romney paid little tax or no tax (which I seriously doubted) because Romney took advantages of those tax-loop-holes then there is nothing wrong with that. When we filed tax returns didn't we all try to take advantages of that as long as it is legal to do so?
(3) When someone runs a business s/he will do his/her best to get the best returns for his/her investments as long as it is legal. If Romney runs his business and he could maximize his returns in a legal way then it showed his business skills. Why do we want to go after a man for running his business skillfully?
(4) Assume another point that Romney ran that company BAIN some time ago and that company exported many jobs oversea to make money or profit. What is wrong with the picture that people are so upset of Romney about this. Anyone runs a business always wants to be successful even if h/she exports the jobs oversea. Why does a business export the jobs oversea? Because of the cost of doing business in the US is too high due to so many rules and regulations setting by Congress, and local governments businesses have to export jobs oversea. We should go after congress and local governments. Why should we go after a businessman? If we run a business shouldn't we do the same to make money? The federal and local government created so many laws and regulations that really discourage businesses to either start or expand, and create an uncertainty condition in which businesses don't know what to expect. Do not blame the businesses exporting jobs, blame the uncertain conditions or unfriendly environment that our government (federal and local) created or fostered that drove our businesses away.
