Republican lawmaker skinny-dipped on Israel trip

Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) admitted he made a mistake when he went skinny dipping in the Sea of Galilee, where nudity is not permitted, during a trip to Israel one year ago. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports.

A group of Republican lawmakers and staff jumped into Israel's Sea of Galilee last year after a night of dining and drinking, and one freshman congressman swam naked, Republican aides confirmed late on Sunday.

The incident, first reported by Politico on Sunday, was investigated by the FBI and led Republican leaders in the House of Representatives to reprimand the 30 lawmakers on the privately funded trip.

Rep. Kevin Yoder stripped naked before jumping into the Sea of Galilee after dining and drinking at a waterside restaurant in the town of Tiberias, Politico reported, citing more than a dozen sources, including eyewitnesses. Other participants, including the daughter of another congressman, swam fully clothed, while some lawmakers partially disrobed, Politico reported.

Two senior Republican aides who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the report's accuracy. Yoder's office was not immediately available for comment.

Politico quoted Yoder as saying in a statement about the incident that he and his wife, Brooke, joined some colleagues for dinner.

"After dinner I followed some members of Congress in a spontaneous and very brief dive into the sea and, regrettably, I jumped into the water without a swimsuit," Yoder said in the statement.

"It is my greatest honor to represent the people of Kansas in Congress and (for) any embarrassment I have caused for my colleagues and constituents, I apologize," the statement read.

The August 2011 trip was sponsored and paid for by the American Israel Educational Foundation, which is affiliated with AIPAC, an influential pro-Israel advocacy group.

Reps. Steve Southerland, Tom Reed, Ben Quayle, Jeff Denham and Michael Grimm were among the more than 20 lawmakers and staff that jumped into the Sea of Galilee, Politico said.

Senior aides to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy also went swimming in the freshwater lake, which is where Christians believe that Jesus walked on water.

Politico quoted sources as saying that neither Cantor nor McCarthy participated in the late-night dip and Cantor later rebuked his Republican colleagues over the incident. (Reporting by David Lawder; Editing by Fred Barbash and Paul Simao)

Oh, the horror!!!! Gee, not much of a story after the Secret Sevice debaucle. Is that all you've got?????

So, this is coming to light a full year after it happened? Once this horrible episode is fully explored on NBC, etc...the whole election will take a u-turn. How will Obama exploit this? I guess he'll have to tie it in to Medicare fraud somehow....

This is silly. Look -- even a Christian, right-leaning, tea-party supporting educator isn't scandalized.

When we have Republicans talking about "legitimate rape" and misrepresenting the facts about issues from Social Security and Medicare to the environment and jobs, we probably should not be wasting space on skinny-dipping!!!!!

Houston, at least judging from the headline the article was about skinny-dipping, not about tanking the US. If that had been the focus of the article -- "Republicans Who Nearly Tanked the US Last Summer Drunkenly Skinny-Dipping in Sea of Galilee" it might have been a bit more effective. Though still pretty silly...

These buffoons were guests in a foreign country. For good or ill they were seen as reps of the U.S. The impression they left is that members of Congress have no more maturity/sense ~or ability to manage their liquor~ than a bunch of kids on spring break.

What's more than silly are these bozos partying to celebrate after they nearly wrecked the U.S. economy -- again, after the GOP tried to do the same when Bush was prez. Who knows? Maybe third time's the charm.

However, I do agree that Romney's racist lies about Obama giving welfare checks to people for not working is a far more serious problem than these morons splashing around in the water.

My question to any of you right or left sheeple is this:

If the above comment is going to be stated about the GOP, does that mean that John Edwards and Bill Clinton's infidelities show the path of "All Democrats?" Are all of you cheating liars that have no respect for women or the commitment of marriage?

When will you start to think for yourself and not just follow a red or blue bandana?

Stonewalling congress? Why the executive order over the F & F? This was unstatesman like conduct but unlike the Secret Service, GSA, federal judges "convention", etc (fill in your own government agency) it was NOT taxpayer funded, when it's taxpayer funded it is condemning their choices on the taxpayer dime. Or are you part of the 49% that doesn't pay taxes so you don't care. You are the problem.

Eric, one last thought before I head to work (now there is a novel idea! Oh, but I'm a conservative...that is what we do)

You are outraged that a grown man (not old, look at his pic) skinny dipped in front of a child (a teenager...check it out). For the record, she may have gotten an eyeful, but I guarantee you that unless she is being homeschooled or privately schooled in a ultra-conservative fashion - this "child" is probably more educated than you were t her age.

My own personal experience is that my children were receiving sex ed in a public school setting and receiving education on *positions* in the 6th grade... You really need to get over the notion that the human body is something to be ashamed of.

@Weary

Is this a story? You bet your congressman's naked butt it's a story. When the members of the "holier than thou" party go swimming naked in the Sea of Galilee or anyplace else it's a story. But ESPECIALLY when they do it where their Lord and Savior walked and preached.

These are the same folks who want to violate the constitution by allowing prayer in school.

These are the same people who oppose equal rights for gay Americans for religious reasons.

These are the same folks who claim providing insurance coverage for birth control for employees of religious institution is "forcing them to sin." (While providing Viagra for men in the same coverage)

These are the RED-WHITE-AND-BLUE He-man woman haters who think there "legitimate rape" and "other" rapes.

You're damned straight it's a story when some Congressman from Kansas goes swimming with a 'free Willy.'

How do you spell 'hypocrisy'? G-O-P!

For example, this isn't the first time he's gotten in trouble over alcohol, and he misrepresented himself by posing as a family man during his campaign. @Eric-913730#1.27: Beg your pardon, but this is precisely the behavior anyone can expect from many republican Congress people, especially "tea baggers". Don't know how or why the GOP went after and funded the elections of so many mental and moral dregs to represent their "tea party crown", yet It did. Didn't know there were so many like minded to support and vote for them, but there were. These people, like most fools, believe all others are like them, or those who are not aren't worth the food required to live. They have no shame, and many would not hesitate to kill those who challenge them. This display of drunken lunacy was predicated upon their belief of receiving a "super soaking of salvation" from the waters upon which it is claimed Jesus once walked. I do hope those who are yet able to keep their feet upon the ground will get out and vote this election. Regards

Why in the world is this news?! We are really grasping at straws here now in libby land.... One GOP candidate makes a stupid statement about rape and pregnancy and it's reported as if it's a plank in the GOP platform, and another lawmaker goes skinny dipping. Why is this anyone's business, and why does the media think this is a story?! If it's dark out, who CARES if he has a suit on? If he was a democrat, this wouldn't even be considered to be printed.

What makes me feel really good right now as a republican is that if this is the kind of "dirt" that the democrats have to fling, then November is looking pretty good for the GOP. Unemployment is stuck over 8%. The deficit is bulging. Entitlement programs are overtaxed. Consumer confidence is low. The price of energy is skyrocketing. And people are pissed as hell... Yeah, but some republican went skinny dipping in the Sea of Galilee... OMG!

In the end, America gets to pay for Israel's loan and the interest. A great deal for Israel and a bummer for the US taxpayer.

Rickypoo....typical republicon...trying to rewrite history from when repubs held the nation hostage for more tax breaks for the rich. Now at elections time..."Here you go again," more tax breaks and NO taxes for the rich is the main Romney and Ryan plan.....Ryan takes the Norquist pledge not to raise taxes and he finally is going to break that pledge....Oh oh.......He only wants to raise the taxes on the middle class and poor ...while giving more tax breaks to the rich......Repubs...the party that held the nation hostage for more money for the rich.

Vote President Obama and Biden 2012 stop the greedy Ryan and Romney!

This is just another example of the moral and ethical decline of society. Standards for acceptable behavior are pretty much gone. This is not what was done in this situation, but more whether it was truly the time and place. Washington is just one giant party for those that work there, and they spare nothing at taxpayers expense.

All you lib's that are screaming obstruction needs to consider this; the republicans/tea party'ers dug in on the principle of no more spending! The government had already spent all the budgeted money (GSA million dollar parties, GSA $100,000 bonuses, and such) and was asking to raise the roof on the debt ceiling (let's go borrow more money in order to spend more on ourselves). Obama campaigned on reducing government spending. Has Obama met that promise? Nope, he stonewalled the US into near default and reduction of the credit rating for what? Unemployment that has never dropped under 8%, $5 trillion dollars in debt, and no real budget cuts in the near horizon. So go ahead tell the world how the republicans and tea party'ers has failed you. Those who have a brain knows that record foreclosures, record debt, increased welfare recipients, record long term gas prices, and food that cost more for less really is the only record this president has to run on.

      Rick,

I don't see any blame being placed on President Obama here. Can you point out where it might be?

""We lowered our long-term rating on the U.S. because we believe that the prolonged controversy over raising the statutory debt ceiling and the related fiscal policy debate indicate that further near-term progress containing the growth in public spending, especially on entitlements, or on reaching an agreement on raising revenues is less likely than we previously assumed and will remain a contentious and fitful process," the ratings firm said."

Israel is a tiny, insignificant state, created by the careless British and the stupid americans. It has no power except what its american protector provides. Yet, despite Israel's insignificance, it rules Washington.

When a resolution introduced by the Israel Lobby is delivered to Congress, it passes unanimously. If Israel wants war, Israel gets its wish. When Israel commits war crimes against Palestinians and Lebanon and is damned by the hundred plus UN resolutions passed against Israel's criminal actions, the US bails Israel out of trouble with its veto.

The power that tiny Israel exercises over the "worlds's only superpower" is unique in history. Tens of millions of "christians" bow down to this power, reinforcing it, moved by the exhortations of their "christian" ministers.

WOW! There is a lot of truth iin this article, hyperbole too and definitely need to read. Who paid for this private(political) party? Why were the American law makers there when there are so many problems at home. I wonder, how many of these and other of Americans' lawmakers are dual citizens with Israel--that can't be good. Talk about a conflict of interest(s).

Who really cares, he was a congressman from Kansas, probably a good old farm boy worked hard all his life, and as everybody knows the boys from Kansas after a hard days work went skinny dipping, so he probably saw nothing wrong with it. So what is everybody getting uptight about, at least he didn't get a BJ in the white house.

Yes the Republicans probably would have had an aneurysm if a Democrat was caught, have you seen how ugly most Democrats look, even in a suit, most of them are fat, bald and gray, that would be enough to start a third world war.

The only reason Osama Obama go elected was because they couldn't find a white guy that was good looking and everybody knows the femocrats like good looking men to vote for, they don't base their votes on anything else.

How bad is the Ryan-Akin anti-abortion bill?

      By Greg Sargent

The national battle over Todd Akin's comments about "legitimate rape" has shed light on a"personhood" bill, co-sponsored by Akin and Paul Ryan, called the Sanctity of Life Act. Much of the chatter today has focused on whether Ryan opposes abortion in cases of rape. The Romney campaign confirmed today that Ryan does personally oppose it, while clarifying that a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose it.

(Wow! A complete Flip-Flop in the same sentence! The last one above. That's gotta be a new Romney Flip-Flop Speed Record!)

      • This is PROOF POSITIVE that The GOP Mullahs are trying to IMPOSE a form of pseudo-Christian Sharia Law on all of America. Think about that. That is what The GOP gang is really up to.

BTW, That bill would be HR 212

And Eric, though I tend to agree with things you say here, it does say it was a a privately funded trip. Sadly, though, the connection between the Republicans and the Israelis is military and corporate -- I recently read an amazing post by a former member of the Knesset saying that the American-Israeli relationship has deteriorated from a friendship based on mutually held values into a relationshio based on profits for the military-corporate machine.

This clown was traveling on the taxpayers dime, and as such shouldn't need to be reminded to be conscious of his behavior. Yet we have people defending this action as if moral and ethical behavior is just a partisan issue. There is no reason for anyone to support the actions of this clown, we should all expect better of our elected officials representing the nation. I guess Yoder thought he was at a fishing hole back in the days when it was okay to strip down and jump in the water.

The article says that there was someone's daughter present. Some posters imply that she is young, others say that if she was there, she must be an adult. It doesn't matter what her age. It is wrong for a grown man to strip naked in front of the young lady or for that matter, the wives of the other representatives there. It doesn't matter if the young lady has seen a number of naked men; it is still in bad taste to do so in front of her. It shows a lack of maturity on his part. I won't even get into how this goes against the GOP's "family values". I would feel the same way if I read this about Democrat representatives, too.

There's a big difference between Weiner showing his weener to get a cheap sexual thrill and someone who after going out to dinner and having a few glasses of wine joins in with a group of other adults to swim at night, some nude, some partial clothed (underpants) and some fully clothed. I bet when they got out of the water the ones who were fully clothed were like "dang, I should have stripped like that guy!" Anyway, at night when swimming you can't see much further than an inch or two below the surface anyway. Growing up in a coastal community I've gone skinny dipping with friends before. It's fun, it's not sexual, it's usually spontanious and unplanned. I really don't get the big deal.

Wow, there are sure some fussy old uptight men and women on this vine. I could not care less about someone skinny dipping in the Dead Sea. Nude beaches are found all over the world. Israel is no exception. Whether this was a nude beach or not, who cares?

As far as in front of women and children--yeah, so? We all have the same equipment, more or less. Pretending it doesn't exist or our genitalia is somehow "dirty," is so backward thinking, it's sad. We really need to lighten up a bit. (If this guy was attacking or deliberately accosting someone, I can see the aversion, but he was skinny dipping. For heavens sake, I've even been skinny dipping--40 years ago in the Greenbrier River. Oh my, how time flies.)

Why on earth would the FBI investigate this year-old incident? Don't they have more important things to do? Are they going to investigate my skinny dipping? If not, why not? It was 40 years ago, but if it's worthy of investigating this person, why not all who have skinny dipped?

Yes, it was poor judgment. Yes, the guy was probably drunk. Yes, he's a member of congress. Yes, he's a republican; and yes, the republicans can be major hypocrites--but so can the democrats. (People in glass house shouldn't throw stones.) Yes, he got his willie wet in the Dead Sea, and OMG, somebody saw a naked human body. Wow, what shallow folks we have in this country if this is the most important news item that would trip their triggers.

BTW, I'm a middle-of-the-road Democrat, female pushing 60. I find this whole story far more on the amusing side than something critical to the security of my country. Anyone really offended by it (instead of laughing hysterically) must really have their panties in wad.

Most countries in the world don't have issues with nudity. It is how we come into this world, after all. Really not seeing it on this one. Shall we remind you libtards that you have had a loooong history of disgusting, perverted, and unprofessional behavior. Yeah, well Obama is breaking the law every day here in the U.S.

              1) Refusing to enforce existing immigration laws,

              2) No budgets passed as required by law,

              3) Refusing to enforce DOMA law.

Obama ignores his oath of office, deciding which laws he will enforce and which laws he thinks should be obeyed.

Seems the liberal media is getting a bit desperate -- having to dig stuff like this up after a full year and so close to election time.

Come to think -- during that year and after this "horrific" act -- I didn't notice the sky falling. Did it ??

Skinny dippers everywhere, beware of an FBI investigation into your deviate activity. I see AG Holder has his priorities straight. Don't uphold the laws of the land, but investigate the unthinkable crime of skinny dipping. The embarrassment here is that the FBI investigated it, and that somebody actually thought it was news or worse, thought that it might have some affect on the election.

It was enough of an embarrassment for the GOP that Cantor (whose own staff was involved in the incident) reprimanded them. The problem with the story is that it doesn't indicate the type of "punishment" handed down. I guess it was just a simple "Shame on you! Look at the bad image you created for us!" As others have posted, they were there on a fact finding mission (I wonder what kind of facts they were looking for, related to Congressional activities, other than further financial support of the Israeli lobby) and were there as representatives of the United States. They should have shown a little more respect for both the nation they were representing and the nation they were visiting. I don't care which party these junkets comprise (often both parties included), they are representing US, the voters, on these occasions.

I am not sure what the issue is. He jumped into the Sea of Galilee naked. In my world wide travels, I find this to be quite common even in the daytime. It is only here in the US that we are uptight about being natural. From what I read in this article, he did nothing except bathe nude. This is not news, but rather just more tabloid style writing.

@George: If this was just a group of tourists... then this is a non story if the locals are doing the same thing. The BIG problem here is they are our elected Congressmen! They are representing you and me when they are overseas and this behavior is, frankly, embarrassing to me. There were several members stripping down to their underwear and going in the water. One was even naked.

Would you condone John McCain taking his clothes off down to his whitey tighties and jumping into the Sea of Galilee? Unlike his GOP friends in the House he is smarter than that.

We might have gotten the two constitutional amendments posted at www.faircampaignreform.us passed in time to affect this election cycle. It is not too late to try to change things in time for 2014/16. GET INVOLVED. Note Sections 5, 6 & 11 of the ECFR amendment.

Petition for US Constitutional Amendment For Election Reform

We, the undersigned US citizens, duly registered voters in our respective states/territories, do hereby petition for our state to approve the following amendment to the United States Constitution by the method noted below.

                      Election Reform:
                      1. Abolish the Electoral College (Repeal Amendment 12)
                      2. ONE NATIONAL primary date to be held on the Tuesday eight (8) weeks prior to the General Election day for Congressional offices and for the President. Candidate petitions must be filed with the local/state elections boards 60 days prior to the Primary Election date. Federal election petitions shall be uniform in every state and shall include a “contract with the voters” that spells out clearly what that candidate stands for on all issues that they may have to address in elected office. They shall be held accountable in court for breach of that contract if elected and any/all terms are not met.
                      3. NO campaigning allowed for any elective federal office more than 60 days prior to the National Primary Date.
                      4. NO campaign contribution shall be donated to any candidate of more than $200 from an individual or $500 maximum from a family (spouses/children living in the same household.) No donations shall be made to a candidate more than sixty days prior to the primary date. No candidate shall contribute from their own funds more than 60% of the total donations from other private individuals.
                      5. NO campaign contribution from any PAC, corporation, union, non-profit organization, special interest group, etc. shall be allowed for any elected federal office.
                      6. NO third party campaigning (separate PAC ads, corporate ads, etc.) for/against any candidate shall be allowed at any time during or before the election season.
                      7. NO party conventions shall be held to select the presidential candidates. The selection must be done at the ballot box in the primary election.
                      8. The One Man/One Vote Supreme Court ruling shall be enforced by this Amendment, namely that NO federal candidate selection shall be by any means other than the ballot box on Primary/General Election Dates.
                      9. National Party Organizations shall NOT raise money for or donate to specific candidates of their party prior to the dates outlined above.
                      10. PAC’s shall NOT be granted tax-exempt status by the IRS, and any non-profit organization who uses their funding for political purposes shall lose their tax-exempt status.
                      11. All lobbyists shall be outlawed from influencing Congress at all times.

This amendment shall be approved ONLY by State Constitutional Conventions to be called within 90 days of this petition being submmitted to a state’s Secretary of State. A minimum of 25% of the registered voters in each state shall be required to further this petition to the respective Secretary of State.

Good job Anti-Trust. also, limit the TOTAL amount that can be spent on any county, state, or federal campaign. That way the voters can see if a candidate not only is able to stay within a budget but what he/she can accomplis with that budget.

CoCo, each person can take this same US Constitution format to try to get it written into your state constitution (or at least Sections 4, 5, 6 & 11.)

I've been trying to get Newsvine posters involved in this issue for two years now, ever since I helped prepare the first draft, then the final draft posted on the website that I pay for out of my own pocket. The Amendments were developed from comments made here on Newsvine as a result of the various Congressional and state races where exorbitant amounts of money were being spent by candidates out of their own pockets and the amount of money from Citizen United ruling groups on anti-candidate campaigns. PAM is a total grassroots movement with NO national organization, NO monetary solicitation (unlike all of the other constitutional amendment sites), and NO lobbyist/candidate support. It is up to each individual to download the petitions, sign them, circulate them among family, friends, neighbors, etc. and help form local/state grassroots organizations for the collection of the petitions. I continue to pay for the site hosting each year as my contribution to the effort since I live in the US Virgin Islands where we do NOT get to vote for president/VP, have NO representation in the Senate, and only voice representation on the floor of the House and voting rights within whatever committee(s) our delegate can get assigned to. Yet we are under the total control of Congress through the Organic Act.

BTW, we really wanted to make the Term Limits 6 terms total in ANY elected office (combine local, state, and federal), but you can't do that as a US Constitution amendment. That would have prevented the career politicians who run for local, then state, then federal office, and spend their whole life on the government payroll.

If thats the case I would say Reid, Pelosi, and a few other top Democrats should be forced to resign. Their lack of moral character and the insider money games they did that was clearly criminal in nature that had they been regular citizens, they would be in prison by now.

Skinny dipping is not an illegal act. The fact that it was Republicans there shows that Isreal has no freinds in the Democrat party which are far freindlier to Hezbola terrorists than they are to their own American Citizens.

But this story, the FBI investigated? As much as I like to see any republican vilified this is no reason to condemn or even criticize anybody. Skinny dipping needs the FBI to look into? Absolutely ridiculous!

This happened a year ago. It is difficult for me to see how this is news, unless this is the first example of man swimming unclothed in the Sea of Galilee. Then it's an historic event and somebody might want to erect a monument at the site. Cue the florid prose. . . "Here, for the first time in recorded history, marking another geat step blah, blah blah. . . .

Skinny dipping isn't news, you are absolutely right. 30 lawmakers and their families taking a trip to Israel, paid for by an organization lobbying for Israel is. Republican or democrat doesn't really matter either. Both parties do it, and that's what's a shame. As an average citizen of the US, how much influence do you have with your local representative to the US House? Not much, I bet. Have money and you can buy influence. Please explain to me why we have to give Israel the huge sums of money that we give them? Not so much because we should, and certainly not because we have such a budget surplus that we can throw money away. Mainly because our politicians can be bought.

TopDrum.....I give that distinction to your boy Larry Craig....Republican Senator trolling the mens room at airports for anonymous sex with men in toilet stalls.

But I understand how a Republican like yourself would find consensual sex between a man and a woman disgraceful.....you must have layovers alot when you fly....wink wink.

actually it was Dem. Senator John Edwards. But heck Kerry was a real looser. remember this? ""You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq." He lied about his Swiftboat boat duty, became a antiwar activists. He should have been taken out back and $hot.

What about the fact that Newt was having affairs with the next wife in line while still married to the previous wife? Oh wait, that doesn't count because he was fooling around with women, not men. (He's in the wrong party - he should come over to the Dems, who fool around with other women while married, not other men like his Repub associates.)

I believe that Jesus Christ was a mortal man who was executed and that is where it ended. Nothing beyond that. That is it.

I also believe that Jesus Christ probably pissed in the Sea of Galilee and if I was over there vacationing I would probably piss in the Sea of Galilee too. This is news only because of the religious wingnutwhackjobs of the GOP being hypocrites and that is where it ends for me.

SO WHAT !!!! This is nothing new for Congress. A full expose of private funded trip for Congress will reveal that Liberal Democrats actually had more privately funded trips than Republicans.

Be careful Media you want to start a tit for tat expose you will end up having the Liberal hand thats feeds you being cut off. You may try to hide the same things the Democrats do but it will not suceed.

Democrats go on funded trips to impoverished countries, to see how they can help, and Republicans go on golf junkets.

Yeah, I guess you're right, there is no difference.

Why can't the Democrats help this country? We need to worry more about our own country than going overseas. Unless of course you approve of the unemployment rate being above 8%, fifteen trillion dollars in debt, and a preisdent that has vacationed 16 times while in office. If that's what you want then go ahead and reelect Mr. Obama.

How many more times has this happened we did not find out about? And now Obama think that Michelle should be salaried because she works so hard??? she has 11 times more staff that any iother first lady in history. Start cutting the budget there...oh that's right there is NO budget! Not for 1300+ days.
