Mitt Romney is betting on having already survived the worst personal scrutiny the Obama campaign has had to offer, leaving him with enough leftover political clout to wage an offensive this fall that would manage to unseat the president.
After offending Britons with comments about the Olympics, Mitt Romney continues to face criticism over remarks he made about Israelis and Palestinians. Meanwhile, he wraps up his trip abroad with a visit to Poland. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.
With 98 days until the election, the Romney campaign believes the dog days of summer are essentially behind them. The campaign views controversies involving his tax returns and work at Bain Capital as having a short shelf life, and the presumptive Republican nominee’s work to capitalize on the president’s “you didn’t build that” gaffe have effectively changed the subject. Romney’s foreign trip had also been built up as an opportunity to pivot away from July’s struggles, though momentum from the trip was more mixed due to stumbles on each of its three legs.
“Our whole goal was to just hold our own over the summer,” said Bay Buchanan, an outside adviser to the Romney campaign. “We've done the warm-up, and we're coming into the convention with a much better position than anticipated.”
But Democrats assert that the Republican shouldn’t be so quick to assume that the attacks based on Romney’s career and personal wealth will disappear.

The first few weeks of July saw an unrelenting and coordinated offensive against Romney, led by the Obama campaign and a variety of Democratic groups. The former Massachusetts governor weathered weeks of ads accusing his private equity firm of having moved jobs overseas during Romney’s time in charge. To make matters worse, Romney had been somewhat opaque about the exact time of his departure from Bain Capital, and had also refused to release additional years of tax returns – leaving him vulnerable to speculation about what those hidden records contained.
The Romney campaign’s steadfastness in the face of scrutiny prompted semi-public handwringing among GOP poobahs, who wondered whether the GOP candidate was essentially allowing the president to define him.
Obama’s comments at a campaign stop in Roanoke, in which he seemed to suggest that business owners don’t deserve all the credit for their successes, handed the Romney campaign a chance to reverse momentum. Republicans have been hitting it hard since then, and the president even released an ad personally responding to the attack.
“You don't always want your candidate out there responding to everything they're saying,” said Buchanan. “We want him, Barack Obama, responding to us.”
Combined with anemic jobs numbers at the beginning of the month and a somewhat lackluster GDP report last week, Republicans believe their narrative on the economy is hardening and Romney remains strong enough to subsume Obama this fall.
NBC's Brian Williams interviews Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on a wide range of topics including the Olympics, gun control, education, taxes and religion.
This all sets the stage for a pivotal month of August, in which Romney must introduce himself to voters and begin turning the tide against Obama.
It just might be the case that July’s squabbles, though, will set the parameters for the fall debate.
“It’s wishful thinking on the part of the Romney to think it's behind them. They might survive it, but it's not behind them,” said former Rep. Martin Frost of Texas, a Democrat known for his strategic acumen.
Frost said that if he were Romney, he wouldn’t release additional tax returns beyond what’s already been pledged – for fear that there were years in which the former Bain leader paid little to no taxes.
“The Romney people are whistling in the dark if they think the Bain thing will go away,” Frost added.

Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean was starker.
“This is going to be the issue that brings him down,” he said, arguing that the attacks on Bain and Romney’s taxes cut to the core of questions about Romney’s character and trustworthiness.
Dean argued that even Romney’s best message on the economy won’t sink in with voters unless they’re willing to put faith in the former Massachusetts governor as Obama’s alternative.
“He could have turned this into something really good. But as long as he’s got his tax returns hidden, it’s going to be fatal,” Dean said, referencing in particular the Republican assault on Obama’s “You didn’t build that” comments. “What Romney is doing is negating his advantage on the economy by not seeming trustworthy.”
But Romney’s team is almost zenlike in its singular focus on the economy. Though much of the past week was dominated by the Republican’s foreign policy tour – for both its embarrassing moments and triumphs – attention will soon turn back to the economy. This Friday’s report on job creation during July could give Romney a cudgel to use against Obama, and the impending selection of a Republican vice presidential candidate and next month’s Republican convention would allow the GOP to drive the campaign narrative into September.
“Once we turn that corner where we can get past the explanations about Bain – and I think we have – then it's a winning campaign,” said Buchanan, who said that the drumbeat for Romney to offer more specific policy alternatives to Obama were “secondary” to convincing voters that his vision on the economy is superior to Obama’s.
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney had another diplomatic misstep – this time in Israel. The Romney campaign pushed back, disputing the reporting of Romney's comments. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.
“We're going to hit the economy, stay on message the full extent we can. But we're not running in a vacuum. The other guy's going to be going after us personally,” she said. “You get your surrogates to respond to the personal stuff. They've hit us pretty hard, I don't know where else they're going to come.”
That might be music to the ears of the president’s team and most Democrats if their strategy on making the election into a choice – and disqualifying Romney in the process – is to be believed.
“I’ll say one thing about Obama, whatever my differences with him. He’s run the best campaign I’ve ever seen a Democrat run in my lifetime,” Dean said.
“Romney’s tried to keep this thing on the economy since March and he hasn’t succeeded. What makes you think he’s going to succeed the next three months?” he added.

Republicans and Romney know that we have had enough of their supply-side economic failures. What Dubya and Cheney did to our economy is proof enough that such policies are a disaster.

Speaking of which, Romney sure does love that Israeli health care system, you know, the socialized one. Did Romney also cheer the Olympic opening tribute to Britain's health care system? You know, the one that covers everyone. They sure don't fall for the USA version, "Thank you for being ill, here is your million dollar bill". Nice campaign slogan for any GOP/TP candidate, don't ya think?
Oh, and on one last note for health care, I'm sure the GOP/TP anti-health care gun right activists are just giddy with glee because the victims of the Aurora shootings face millions$$$ in uncovered health costs. Just how the old GOP/TP likes it .. shoot-em up, toss 'em in the hospital, dump 'em on the streets with no way to pay their health care costs for the remainder of their maimed lives. Caring group, aren't they?

I can tell him one way to get the tax return question put behind him - release them. I know he is going to drag his feet, but this is not just a legal issue. It is a REQUIREMENT that voters are demanding, and Mittens can't refuse without abandoning the independent vote, and he can't win without it.
Too bad, Romneycare! If you wanted to hide a bunch of illegal tax breaks, you should have thought about that before you decided you could purchase the Presidency.

The country pretty much is clear that Bain was a very successful company that provided many, many jobs for Americans. The Obama attacks on success have gotten a little tiring for the voters. Obama's stumbles that "You didn't build that" and "The private sector is doing just fine" ring in the voters ears - this is clearly is a man that is very out of touch with reality.
Let Obama continue with his smoke screen of Bain and tax returns. Nobody cares.

What a double standard. It is amazing that the same level of scrutiny was not placed upon Obama. We gave him a pass because he wooed all of us with hope and change. Hope has not been replaced with "the new reality of our economy and future" and change is about nothing more than a overused word. I don't hear anything from the campaign trail from Obama on what he has done. Who cares what is in Romney's tax return anymore than I care about Obama's college transcripts. If he did something illegal let the IRS deal with it. Trust me, if he released every tax return he ever filed the libs and MSNBC would still want more. NJ John got it right, Obama is cool, likeable, funny, etc....he is just in over his head and the economy is proof positive. @geteright - You didn't get anything right. If you can't google all the things Obama has done since being in office then you have issues. There are hundreds of sights just waiting for you to click on them and read to your hearts content, but you won't because then you would actually have to agree that he has done alot. As far as his college transcripts, Republicans lost out on the Berther thing so they tried his college transcripts. If he showed you those, you would ask for something else just fishing for something. Thing is, you can't find anything and that erks you. Romney on the other hand has definitely something to hide. Every Candidate running for President has always shown his tax returns for public view. This is to show you have nothing to hide. Now Romney comes along and all the sudden, no tax returns. What's he hiding? Also concerning the economy, if the Republicans would have done something other then stonewall everything Obama has tried to do to help the economy, then the Unemployment rate would be down in the 6 to 7 percent. Again, the stonewalling is why the economy is so bad and that is the Republicans fault. They can't stand the fact that even though they stonewalled everything, the economy is still coming back. Did you know the Taxes have been the lowest in decades? Even so the Republicans are screaming about taxes. WTF. Sorry you can't see the writing on the wall, but Romney is on his way to being the biggest loser ever.

I have to admit I am courious as to just what you think Obama has left this country..other than at least some jobs gained back that your republican friends outsourced away..and gave tax credits to do so. Obama did not create the huge debt this nation has today..your republican friend Bush did that on his own. If folks were paying attention to congress you would know that the republicans have blocked anything that would have helped this nation..that ( helping this nation ) is what they were elected to do..so far, they have done nothing at all. So far we , this country , has had four years of a political party doing its best to bring harm to this country. What is the big deal about his tax returns? He is wealthy, and he does what every wealthy person does; utilizes legal methods to shield income from taxes. When did it become a bad thing to hold onto ones own money? What is wrong with you people? Under Obama, we have been going to slowly in the right direction. He did not create the hole he is digging out of, but he should have been able to get out of it sooner.
What we as a country must decide is if Romney will take us faster in the right direction, or in the wrong direction.
Right now, I don't believe he has given us enough information to make that decision. In what areas has Romney given specific details about his plan?
He is going to "repeal and replace" health care. What if he does not have the votes to repeal it (it is not likely that he will get a super majority in the senate.) How would he implement the bill if it remains law? If it is repealed, what will he replace it with? He has said that he was going to keep the popular things like insuring people with pre-existing conditions and remove the individual mandates. The individual mandates pay for the other things. How will he accomplish this? What exactly is his plan? If we don't know his plan-how can we know that it will be better?
What is his plan to prevent banks from putting us in the same situation as before? If we don't have his plan, how can we know that it is better?
What is his plan to create jobs? If we don't have his plan, how can we know it is better?
There is far worse than Obama. To those who disagree-look up "great depression" and compare it to now. Big difference. Change for the sake of change is not always good-we need to make sure that, if we change presidents-it is for the better. I don't believe we know enough to establish that because Romney has yet to tell us exactly what he is going to do.
Just a clarification on the tax return issue:
Mitt Romney has NOT released two tax returns. He said he'll release the 2011 return sometime in October, after the amended form has been filed with the IRS. The 2010 return he did release was incomplete; the required FBAR (Foreign Bank Accounts Report) was not attached. We'll never see the 2009 return, which many experts believe will show very little, or even no federal income taxes, paid.
So please, whenever anyone says Romney's released two years' of federal tax returns, correct them. He's released none.

For those crying about tax returns, it isn't the law. I know that is hard to understand since we have a president that picks and chooses which laws his administration will enforce as if what is done in congress doesn't trump the Obama ideology. Democrats were able to ram healthcare through, it should be no problem for them to pass a law requiring a certain number of tax returns to be president. The new law could also include a verifiable birth certificate requirement as well.

I think Obama will win in November, because between Romney's unreleased tax returns and his support of the Ryan budget/cuts (which effectively begins the privatization of Medicare) even registered republicans won't vote for it. My very republican parents have promised me they will not vote for that, they don't agree with it and don't support it. I got a weak argument from my dad saying 'they won't really do that' but why would anybody vote for someone who says that is what they will do? So they won't, and they won't be the only ones. As for the economy, if Obama had gotten cooperation instead of obstruction from the republicans we would be in a better place. But all the republicans have is a double down on the Bush trickle down, which is a FAIL. No way sane people will vote for more Bush economics.

I love how Romney sites McCaine as a president to only release 2 yrs (which btw he has only released 1 yr so far and promised another) Because McCain was been a member of congress longer than I've been alive, he has to release income information every year. It's never bad to hold onto one's own money. Then again, neither is paying a decent share of your income in taxes to give back to the country that made the institutions that helped you become so wealthy.
Technically, Romney did not create wealth; he simply expropriated it from one part of the economy to another. To create wealth, you need to create products of value, like cars or industrial machinery. Romney did neither of that. In fact, you could make the argument that he destroyed wealth on a net basis. Romney bought companies, leveraged them out in part due to fees that he paid to his own company, and then left the business for dead after picking it clean. Is it the whole truth??? Of course not. Romney helped some businesses, like Staples and Dominoes, which created thousands of jobs. He deserves credit. But he didn't just destroy jobs; he destroyed good jobs. The jobs that were created by Staples were mostly low-wage service jobs, primarily in the retail sector. Of course he created some good jobs via demand for Staples products, but it does not even come close to the real middle-class jobs he destroyed in manufacturing, the once-strong lifeblood of the our economy. The destroyed jobs led to less wealth added to GDP, and when combined with the creation of debt in numerous businesses, that presents a net loss. Plus Romney led the way for the replacement of wealth by debt, further undermining our economy.
Unfortunately, you don't understand the plan of progressives like myself. We want America to be a land of equality, not just socially and culturally but economically as well. Why should a multi-billion dollar company get to exploit tax loopholes and weasel out of paying taxes while blue-collar families are facing the pain of stagnant wages and increasing costs??? And why should the tax code favor finance instead of labor???? And as for the last part, the number who don't pay the income tax is 47%, and they still pay payroll taxes and gas taxes. Only 0.9% of Americans don't pay either the payroll tax or the income tax and are eligible to pay at least one of them.
Nor is it my fault if you are a billionaire trying to make off with as much wealth as possible by putting it in foreign tax havens; you still need to pay.
Unfortunately, True Patriot, that won't fix the problem. While the minimum wage is essential, we need to go bigger, way bigger. With productivity at record highs but salaries plateauing, no wonder the middle class is getting squeezed. I say index all wages to productivity levels, repeal Taft-Hartley to rebuild the labor movement, crack down on tax havens and special interest loopholes, and rebuild both our education and our healthcare systems (preferably modeled on other countries while adding that age-old American flavor). That will fix the problem, if not reduce it.

The concern is that Romney is hiding questionable, unethical, and possibly even illegal practices to "sheild his income". The problem is that even the little bit we've seen so far indicate some questionable practices, most notably the thousands claimed as a "medical therapy" deduction for care of a horse. That stretched the definition of "medical therapy" well beyond the breaking point. How ethical is that?
Part of that 47% "non-taxpayers" are rich people using various tax loopholes and illegal practices to "hold onto their own money". I agree that they should be contributing and not slacking off. Another part of those "non-taxpayers" are not earning any money - retirees, unemployed, children, etc. We can hardly collect income taxes from people with no income. The remainder are the working poor who barely make ends meet - yet you want them to pay more so the rich can enjoy more tax breaks? Do you really want to tax the working poor into homelessness and welfare? Apparently so.

Well when Romney and friends need money to fix the economy, where do you think it's going to come from? None of his buddy's pay taxes, that's one of the reasons they are rich, and that's also why people want to see his tax returns. The first place the money well come from will be the interest deduction on our home mortgages. Do any of you think that Romney cares if people lost that deduction. Remember only "little people pay taxes", is how rich people think of tax fairness, and Romney is rich. If Romney and the repubs take over our country in the fall, by summer we won't need the boarder fence between us and Mexico, we will be Mexico!!

Romney and Obama have been running on 2 separate platforms. What i see from Romney is a fresh effort, to at least a positive direction. it could cost me a job in my immediate future, but i dont think i'll be looking for a pay i will never see either for 3 yrs as was between 2008-2011, 10 times longer than the longest period of time in my life to find a job since 18. we NEED industry, not more government handout jobs. my job now is paid by all of us who have an income, other than that of those whos job isnt financed in some form by tax dollars. i like the hell out of my job, i work hard in appretiation for it. but i think we could also use other than government product to go out the doors. that tells me people are not working, and employers are going thru temp services to handle employment screening because applicants unqualified-qualified alike swamp them for a job... usually 1-3 openings. THOSE qualified people (like myself) dont do temp services other than last resort. Man-Power is/was full of crap telling US there was not enough skilled workers out there. Does some one out there care to tell me where 10s millions skilled workers went to? does one exspect me, or any SANE person to think all these people WERE NOT SKILLED before?
Before Romney left, he was keeping people working, he ran a state of the US, and has shown to be a leader in the political world, as well the buisness as part of a platform, so far has been honest, with only 98 days till election. Its been on job creation, saveing the middle class from being eaten alive not just by taxes, but cost of living. he wants to make money with out it coming from a printing press. he realises doing this, is what for exsample made a can of coffee go from $6.00 to $11.00 in about 2 yrs or so. But what has been most condemning to date was Romney's really lame answer during his trip in which he pretended not to know if he had ever paid less than a 13.9% tax rate. He darn well knows, and now I know with certainty that paying little or no taxes (probably in 2008/2009) is one of the main reasons Romney refuses to release 8-10 years tax returns like President Obama -- Which would mean returns going back to at least 2004.

Everyone knows that the reason he will not release more than 2 years worth of data is because it will show he (1) still worked for Bain after claiming he did not, and (2) paid very little or zero taxes for a number of years.
The Republicans know this... that is why they are trying so hard to change the subject. Like most of the 1%, he has a number of loopholes and write-offs at his disposal. I would be shocked if he did actually pay taxes every year. But THAT is why Republicans are worried. They will still vote for him, but it is the independents that can be turned away by this. The right knows that tax returns showing little to no taxes paid will look extremely bad to independent voters... so they are trying desperately to change the subject.
The other problem that Romney has is that he is hanging his entire campaign on a gaffe. A gaffe that most Americans can understand, and see the underlying point. Again, Republicans will hold on to it because they will vote for any Republican... no matter who it is. But it is the independents they need to worry about. Independents can see the truth behind a gaffe, they can understand the underlying point.
The only way to get strong independent support is to come out with a solid, detailed plan on what he would do to fix America. One liners, gaffes, political spin... that's all great for your base, but it doesn't win middle-ground voters.
The Republicans biggest problem is that they are too busy focusing on Republican voters.

A previous post was probably close to the mark. The big money was shorting the home mortgage market in 2007 and 2008. They cleaned up and got back in after the bank bailout. Mitt was surely part of the big money. If he had big (legal) profits that can be tied to the bank bailout he is going to have a lot of splaining to do.

Just had my 6 month dental visit. I told him that I just passed my last exam, but can't get people to commit to projects, nor can people I consult with. He told me he knew a lot of small businesses that have tried to get loans and are turned down.
You, see, while Obama appears to be the friend of small business by offering tax cuts and lower rates for small business loans.
-The tax cuts are so specific and filled with requirements that many businesses that wished to take advantage found out they did not qualify afterall.
-As for the small business loans, he and the Democrats instituted 1100 pages of federal regulations detailing what banks are allowed to approve. If the applicant misses one thing in the 1100 paged, by regulation, the bank cannot approve the loan. The reality is, that Obama is your loan officer, and he is not your friend.
My wife and I ran into this on the making homes affordable act. Through all the months of waiting and at a cost to our credit ratings, we were turned down as 90% of americans were. Worse yet over half of those approved have still lost their homes, and we haven't been late yet. $200 a month less would have been very helpful to us.
I feel so sorry for those who trust the democrats, they promise very big things, and don't really deliver.

Is that President Obama's fault? Are the millions who lost their jobs and had to go to social services just to survive President Obama's fault too? Are the $12 trillion in lost investments, retirement and home values under Bush's watch President Obama's fault too? Was the TWO wars and a medicare drug plan that wasn't funded OR put on the books under Bush, which President Obama PUT on the books, Obama's fault too? Was the Jobs Plan for small businesses President Obama tried to get Congress to pass, failed because the GOP ALL voted 'NO,' President Obama's fault too? They know their offering for president is so weak and inept that the only way they can win is to cheat. I read that because of the congress not passing enough funding bills, THEY have caused borrowing to increase by tens of billions of dollars. Okay, first of all unemployment is only up (since Obama took office) because Obama took office DURING the recession. The recession only ended after the stimulus was enacted several months later, and it would be at least one point down had the states and local governments not fired workers (we should have given them state aid). As for the deficit, what the @!$%# did you expect??? Recessions CAUSE DEFICITS by decreasing tax revenue and increasing spending. Add that to the Bush deficits, and you get this massive shortfall. And of course Obama has increased debt than 30 presidents by numbers; ever heard of inflation and economic growth???? Now, if you are in support of a balanced budget, how the @!$%# can you vote for Romney??? His tax plan cuts revenues by $3.4 trillion, extends the $4 trillion Bush tax cuts, and increases defense spending. The Ryan budget wouldn't even cut the deficit; all of the savings from cutting domestic programs for the common man go to tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. I.E., the deficit will SKYROCKET under Romney. How the hell you can ignore that is beyond my understanding.

As it gets closer to election day, Twitt's handlers will finally realize they can't stonewall anymore and still have any kind of chance of winning. Then Twitt will FlipFlop one more time (it gets easier with practice!) and release them as close as they can so people can't 'twist' his figures. Here's what he does not want ordinary, working Americans to see: tens of thousands of dollars of interest from offshore bank accounts - tax free. His IRA, somewhere between 20 and 100 M$, with questionable deposits (there is a $5,000 dollar per year limit on IRAs. You do the math). Lastly, his bottom line tax rate: 13%, when most of us are paying about 25%.
He knows this will blow up in his face, and that is why he is trying to hide it.

Romney is not being asked specific questions about what his plans are for the economy, military spending, how he would bring both political parties together to start legislating again , what he plans to do about national health care should his Republican allies in Congress successfully repeal the Affordable Care Act, gun control, and a myriad of other issues facing the nation. He's great at criticizing but never a word about what he would definitively do to solve some of the nation's problems. No one on Fox "News" will ever try to pin him down and he will continue to speak in platitudes until he is repeatedly questioned on what his real, definitive plans are. He's managed to avoid directly answering questions about his taxes, how he managed to grow his IRA to somewhere near $100 million when the annual contribution limit is $6000, and why he's so vague about everything related to his past and present investments and tax status. There's a lot more to being president than working for a company like Bain. Yet that his his sole claim to fame and his stated reason for why he should be elected president. The man remains an apparition, hoping that his avoidance of the press (with the exception of his beloved Fox "News"), will carry him through to the election without serious inquiry by real journalists.

Then he proceeded to generate fear among businesses for years on end, with both his anti-business rhetoric and his anti-business policies. Barack Obama is repeating the same approach and getting the same results — namely, an agonizingly slow economic recovery, as investors hang on to their money, instead of risking it in a hostile political environment.
If we wake up some morning and find some American cities in radioactive ruins, courtesy of a nuclear Iran, nobody is going to care whether the president who lets this happen is the first black president or the last WASP president. But, in the meantime, many people will keep on voting for symbolism, as if an election is a popularity contest, like choosing a college's Homecoming Queen or Parade Marshal.
There seems to be something "liberating" about ignorance — especially when you don't even know enough to realize how little you know. Thus an administration loaded with people who have never run any business is gung-ho to tell businesses what to do, as well as gung-ho to tell the medical profession what to do, lenders whom to lend to, and the military how to fight wars.

Somewhat lackluster? Guys, it was as lousy as it could possibly be. This is supposed to be a recovery- you'd need GDP between 5% and 6% to begin to recover the jobs that have been lost. We haven't seen anything near those numbers.

The GDP was MINUS 6.5% when Bush left office. Anything with a positive number is multitudes better than that.

As bad as it could be? Were you in a coma in 2007? Did you remain there in late 2008 when Obama took over? Were you asleep when McCain put his campaign "on hold" to go to Washington because iof the financial crisis? Do you remember George Bush and Hank Paulsen (finally) giving a speech? Do you remember both of them pushing TARP (to the gasp of the Tea Party) because it would have been economic suicide at that point not to?

Yes it really is as simple as that. They started two REALLY expensive extended wars, expanded medicaid, gave out Trillions in earmarks, and simultaneously lowered taxes, while they gutted existing rules that allowed people to see what they were buying (deregulation) and all these things had never been done all at once before.
The "idea" was that the regulations weren't needed as they would "self regulate" and those low taxes would spur business, and ALL that new business would "trickle down" and pay for the tax cuts. They didn't.... The debt soared, and when an inevitable cyclical dip came, the surplus we had was gone, and heavy debt was in it's place. And as MANY predicted, it all fell apart.. Alan Greenspan (the Fed chairman at the time) as well as Hank Paulsen (the Treasury Secretary at the time) both admitted this saying that it was a very large failed experiment.
At that point we had no choice but to borrow money to keep the economy and america alive. That started with TARP (which EVERYBODY supported) even though they (The republicans) knew at the time that their story (trickle down economics) was blown... Mortgage industry, Auto Industry, etc. etc. were similar dominoes that fell and had to be supported (unless you are a multinational corp that doesn't give a crap about the US and american workers). Romney doesn't want to talk about all those jobs saved, and an industry retained, and yes that was one of his few positions (he wanted to let the US auto industry die). I wonder where he was invested then, but that is another story, and it appears we will never know....
Meanwhile we started putting rules back in place to keep that from happening again, and to start lowering costs allowing us to pay back the money we had to borrow to save the country, while simultaneously not stalling the economy. All of this in the face of opposition that will do absolutely anything to make Obama fail, while making rich people richer, and poor people poorer (by every measure that exists).
The most recent example is just last week when they struck down a bill that would have given a 20% tax break for companies that "in source" jobs to the US, and use American workers, while also closing loopholes that give companies tax breaks for out sourcing jobs to India and China.
It was voted down by republicans. All democrats and All independents voted for it. All but the 4 retiring republicans voted against it saying that it "unduly targeted international companies". Duhhhh... If they sell here, but don't employ US workers, and they don't pay taxes here... Why NOT? Clearly they are more against Obama than they are for the US. It is either that or they are DIRECTLY pandering to multinational corporations that have ZERO allegiance to the US. One or the other, or both.....
I get it that there are people that will vote republican or democrat no matter what candidate they put up. I can't help those people. This vote (see above) calls out who is FOR us and who is AGAINST the American PEOPLE. Those that are against us and are selling us out to China should be voted out. PERIOD....
Now, amazingly... we are being asked to vote for the exact same policies that got us here, a president that thinks the same way, and a congress that is dedicated to do the same thing. Sometimes I wonder if we are any smarter than fruit flies....

Saint Claire - The majority of those who have overseas investments through 401Ks generally have them through domestic investment firms. Additionally, they are subject to limitations each year. The limitations are there to prevent people who are moderate to high income earners from receiving too much tax benefit from their contributions to the plan, particularly since 401Ks are for W-2 wage earners through their employers and all contributions are made on a pre-tax basis. (Now, if you'd like to have a discussion on SEPs, SIMPLE plans, etc...) Traditional IRAs are also subject to limitations, and those limitations are more restrictive than those placed on 401Ks. Now, please explain to me how Romney is able to have MILLIONS stashed in IRAs held offshore, considering the limitations that are placed on domestic IRAs.
Bottom line - Romney's a liar and and has been flip-flopping on numerous issues since he started running his campaign, if not before. For me, the tax issue and money held offshore to avoid income tax is a HUGE issue. How can he be expected to be entrusted with the entire amount of money within the Department of Treasury when he cannot be honest about his own financial dealings??
