Key role for Bill Clinton at Democratic convention

Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images

Former President Bill Clinton delivers closing remarks at the International AIDS Conference at the Walter Washington Convention Center July 27, 2012 in Washington, DC.

Former President Bill Clinton will have a marquee role in this summer's Democratic National Convention, where he will make a forceful case for President Barack Obama's re-election and his economic vision for the country, several Obama campaign and Democratic party officials said Sunday.

The move gives the Obama campaign an opportunity to take advantage of the former president's immense popularity and remind voters that a Democrat was in the White House the last time the American economy was thriving.

Obama personally asked Clinton to speak at the convention and place Obama's name in nomination, and Clinton enthusiastically accepted, officials said. Clinton speaks regularly to Obama and to campaign officials about strategy.

Clinton's prominent role at the convention will also allow Democrats to embrace party unity in a way that is impossible for Republican rival Mitt Romney.

George W. Bush, the last Republican to hold the White House, remains politically toxic in some circles. While Bush has endorsed Romney, he is not involved in his campaign and has said he does not plan to attend the GOP convention.

Clinton will speak in prime-time at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 5, the night before Obama formally accepts the party nomination. While the number two on the ticket often speaks that night, the Obama campaign has instead decided that Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will speak on the same night.

Biden will speak before Obama on Sept. 6, in front of tens of thousands of people expected to fill an outdoor stadium in Charlotte, and millions more on television.

The vice president's speech will focus on outlining many of the challenges the White House has faced over the past four years and the decisions Obama made to address them, officials said.

"To us it's about deploying our assets in the most effective way," Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said. "To have President Clinton on Wednesday night laying out the choice facing voters, and then having Vice President Biden speak right before the president in prime time on Thursday, giving a testimony to the decisions the president has made, the character of his leadership and the battle to rebuild the middle class that's so central to our message."

Clinton's role at the convention was to be formally announced Monday. It was first reported by The New York Times.

Clinton spoke at the 2008 convention, part of a healing process for the Democratic party following the heated primary battle between Obama and the former president's wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Since then, the ties between Obama and Bill Clinton have strengthened significantly. Obama has called on the former president for advice several times during his term and the two have appeared together this year at campaign fundraisers for Obama's re-election bid.

That's your best Rushian response? You should be ashamed. Not only are you not contributing to any political discussion, you add only dirt and ugliness. You stink up every room you enter, and are the first to complain about bad air. You and your "side" are a cancer on our society. You are never part of a solution, alwasy part of the problem. Shame on you for calling yourself an American. You are a domestic terrorist, no less!

Is Bill having to step in to keep the Dems from feuding on the floor? Or to try to convince them to keep Barry in the top position for another 4 years?

Let's take a look at Bill's accomplishments....

Liar, liar, liar, pervert, liar, liar, pervert, pervert, liar, liar.... yeah, I think he'll be PERFECT to speak to the convention.... he knows their language

You have to ask yourself why it is so hard for G.W. to even participate in political theater that is common and publicly expected from ex-presidents. It really reminds you of someone that left town in the dark of the night.

It's actually sad that our President would need to rely on a former President to convince Americans to vote for him. He should be communicating to the American people directly, like he did during the last election and make a case for himself.

Shoot! Bush II was prepared to make a 'Run For The Border' at the end of his second term. He clandestinely sent his daughter to purchase a hacienda on a huge ranch in South America to run to after his term ended and he'd start getting hit with war crimes and other charges. Fortunately for him, President Obama called for reconciliation and for Congress and the American people to forget his crimes and let the past be the past and he didn't have to skip the country to avoid prosecution.

I don't believe Republicans have enough respect for "freakin liars".

Bill Clinton lied to protect a young woman's chastity, George "Curveball" Bush lied us into an illegal, billion dollar war so that he could rule the 2nd largest oil fields in the world, and George "Curveball" Bush STILL to this day runs not only the Iraqi Oil Fields, but also the Iraqi Oil Profits.

Now THAT's what you call a "freakin liar"!

American Girl, really? He lied to protect a woman's chastity? You actually think that? Bush runs Iraqi oil fields? Put down the crack pipe and get a clue. Clinton lied to protect his ass....plain and simple. Now, believe it or not Clinton was not a bad President when it came to getting things done. He was able to work with Congress and implemented welfare reform....which Obama is trying to reverse. Clinton knew how to govern in the middle.....too bad Obama has never learned that.

Oh shucks, I was hoping that Mrs. Obama would be the #1 speaker....that is if she is available. Amazing that she "pulled out" of "leading the U.S. atheletes" at the Olympics. Maybe she will be in the closing ceremony.

Other speakers which should be considered by the DNP: Rev Wright (could give the invocation after saluting the American Flag), Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Chris Matthews, Hilary Rosen, Anita Dunn, Valerie Jarrett, Mayor Emanuel, to name a few.

Well he didn't "protect his ass" as you say, because Republicans tried to remove Clinton from office, and it backfired in Republicans' faces big time. All of the Republicans who tried to remove Clinton were all either voted out of office, or were forced out of office for being total hypocrits and having long-term extra-marital affairs some of which Larry Flint (of Hustler Magazine) caused to be exposed.

President Clinton was re-elected in a landslide.

I can hardly blame you for your selective memory, it seems to be a trait among Republicans, developed as a result of "lie and deny pile-a-tricks" because of the embarassment Republicans have caused the Republican Party in recent times.

American Girl

Are these lies too?

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them.
That is our bottom line."
President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program."
President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

"Iraq is a long way from USA but, what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face."
Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983."
Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

"We urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S.Constitution and Laws, to take necessary actions, (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."
Letter to President Clinton, signed by Sens. Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others Oct. 9, 1998

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"Hussein has .. chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies."
Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

"There is no doubt that ... Saddam Hussein has invigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue a pace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies."
Letter to President Bush, Signed by Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL,) and others, December 5, 2001

"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandated of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them."
Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002

"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country."
Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

"Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power."
Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction."
Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..."
Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002

"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force-- if necessary-- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security."
Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years ... We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction."
Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002

"He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do"
Rep. Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons."
Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002

"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real ..."

I believe Bill wants to be co_president with Hillary again in four years and probably that's his motivation for doing this.

Pinellas County Florida Hotel Taxes to the tune of $600,000 are being spent to host welcoming party for the Republicans and media people yada yada who will attend the RNC convention in Tampa/Hillsborough County Florida in late August. In my wee mind a complete waste of taxpayer money. My question is, is any local government spending money on the DNC or other Party Conventions?

I've favored Democrats over Republicans troughout my adult life. The Clintons have been a force for good in this country, and I respect their service to the American People. The current situation of chaos in Washington has only strengthened my political affilliation with the Democratic Party.

The overall picture is somehow quite rosy for Republicans. Why? We've finally reached the stage where the highest bidder gets to buy political office. Sheldon Edelman and the Koch Brothers have already bought and sold several important figures who are now danicng to whatever whistle tune they fancy. The Republican party has been sold outright to corporate interets, and they've thrown in as a bonus the fate of the American Middle Class and working poor.

If this was Star Wars, the Republicans would represaent the Dark Side.

I don't really believe the highest bidder buys the office with the media giving free support to the Democrats.

Also, I believe that promising things we can no way pay for will not help middle class. I anm middle class myself and I expect when the US flushes down completely the poor and middle class will also pay big time.

Are you talking about the 20% across the board tax cut Romney is promising? To a millionaire an extra 20% is a lot of money, even if cost of living rises considerably for everybody. To a minimum wage earner or someone barely able to pay his bills, the actual COST of such tax cuts will plunge them even farther into poverty.

The rich need no help. Romney insists they do. He cares not at all about the 99%, who will pay dearly for the hand-outs benefiting mainly the wealthy.

How much LESS than in 2009 did Romney pay in taxes all those years before? We'll never know, because the truth is a guarded secret with Republicans.

Chris - Obama is up by six points across the board, not exactly a virtual tie, but it gets much worse for Willard when you look at the only statistic that truly matters - the electoral college map - Obama is up by 50 electoral college votes and leads in 11 of 13 swing states including MI and NH - both states where Romney has homes (Obama also leads in CA where Willard has yet another home). Obama leads in VA, OH and FL, which unless Willard can turn it around in those three states, makes it an impossibility for him to win the white house. But you keep on pushing the "virtual tie" nonsense if it makes you feel better about all that hate you are harboring.

Bill Clinton's involvement obviously isn't a real endorsement of Obama. The Clintons despise him for many reasons, including the lies he told about Hillary four years ago. His support must be for the party or possibly to somehow promote Hillary.

                    vinyl,

You need reading glasses. Romney has favored tax cuts...cuts...cuts! You listen to rhetoric from the wrong people. The Koch brothers favor not spending more money than the government takes in, and they fear not following that philosophy will take us all under! Simple, wise and obviously correct logic and your idiot liberal leaders demonize them for that. The stupid attacks won't keep working because everyone is fed up with the nonsense and almost everyone that has any IQ at all has to know that we are in trouble if we keep up with the damn spending spree that BOZO is using to try to buy his election.

By the way, you BOZO followers might enjoy knowing that he has accomplished something that no other President has done before. He skipped the D-Day memorial services for 3 years in a row. No President before him has missed one! He is the first. He couldn't attend the one held this year because he was on the way to California for a fundraiser. Do you really think he has much respect for the country? Oh...I forgot he has set a new record for Presidents! He has had more fundraisers than any other President; actually more than the last five Presidents combined. I kind of wish he would concentrate on taking care of the business of the US rather than campaigning, but then again I guess the country was in good hands during those campaign outings with clown Joe, Harry Reid and Pelosi still working.

D-Day visits are a fairly recent phenomenon and no president has made more than one.”

The presidents have been more likely to visit Normandy during a special anniversary. Ronald Reagan, the first president to visit according to Snopes.com, gave a speech there for the 40th anniversary in 1984. President Bill Clinton visited and spoke on the 50th anniversary in 1994, George W. Bush went there on the 60th anniversary in 2004 and Obama the 65th in 2009. Their speeches are chronicled on YouTube. Bush also spoke at Normandy in 2002, but that was for Memorial Day.

The GOP leadership knew on inauguration day January 20, 2009, that the GOP was through if they failed to stall the recovery and thwart President Obama's reelection. The GOP leadership knew that they will be watching President Hillary Clinton sworn in on January 20, 2016 and January 20, 2020 if they failed in their plot. First, they knew that it was obvious they caused the Depression and the Crash of '07 and they were the party in the White House when both Great Depressions occurred and the presided over both Great Stock Market Crashes of '29 and '07. The statistics that economist put forward in 2008-2009 when it became evident that the recovery would take until 2015-2016 proved that the economic situation would recover at a moderate pace and that the full recovery in housing and employment would take 6-7 years due to the enormous hole into which the GOP economic and foreign policies had put our Nation. The depths were so deep that all credible economist knew it would be more than four years for full recovery. They were all correct in hindsight. McConnell, Boehner, Cantor, Norquist and the other unpatriotic rats plotted on inauguration night to attempt to delay all recovery for political purposes at the Nation's citizens expense. The mere thought that elected officials would obstruct the Nation's economic recovery is beyond the pale of normal politics and unpatriotic and malicious. They knew then and understand now that if and when President Obama is reelected that the full recovery is going to occur on his watch and the GOP will once again be irrelevant for the next four elections just like in the 1930s-1940s. The GOP will have caused, once again, the Great Depression and the Democrats will implement the recovery. On the other side of the coin, if Romney can pull out a win then the economy will reach full employment under his administration until his/Bush's policies retake effect and the Nation is plunged into deflation once again and on the verge of collapse. It is ironic that the GOP claims to be the party of business yet they are the party that presides over all the economic collapses. 1929, 1930-32, 1972-76, 1987, 2007. Conversely, the Democrats presided over budget surpluses in 1990s, a major stock market rally under President Obama which increased the USGDP by 100%!!! and sustained, consistent growth in employment for over three and a half years consecutively without job losses, LBJ: had the most successful economic statistics of any President since WWII with the highest GDP. lowest inflation, highest employment of any administration, Carter, whom the GOP bashes without just cause, had a higher rate of growth in employment than Reagan.

Obama is his own worst enemy. He make proposals with as much partisan politics as possible to the House and threatens to veto any changes,

How can the Democrats in the House negotiate on bipartisan bills with Republicans when Obama states the only thing that he won't veto is a rubber stamp of his proposal ?

If Hillary was president, we would see bipartisan legislation passed as it did in Bill Clinton or Bush admins.

With Obama that only cares about his political future, it won't happen.

Just look at who the GOP puts forward as candidates. Nixon was a crook and a megalomaniac and the Nation's economy suffered under his administration. Ford was a not the sharpest knife in the drawer and the Nation's economy continued to suffer. Reagan was not bad but nowhere near the saint the GOP makes him out to be. Numerous small businesses failed under the Volcker plan that raised interest rates to 18-20% in the early eighties. Only the giant corporations did well under Reagan and the small businesses were all forced out. The H.W. Bush was a "one-termer" for a reason. His economc policies were the same as the rest of the GOP which means they are bad policies for the Nation as a whole. Then W. Bush turned a major budget surplus into an immediate budget deficit of historic proportions. W. failed in the most basic task of President, to protect the Nation. On 9/11 the Nation suffered it's worst defeat ever. Because of a lack of leadership and zero foresight the Nation was forced to it's knees. There is no way that anybody can honestly say that 9/11 was not a failure on the part of the Bush administration and IMO it was the biggest failure of our Nation's history. Bush's two unfunded wars just like Romney's two unfunded wars, which he and W. Bush's neo-con advisers who are now whispering in Romney's ear the same failed lies they whispered in W. Bush's ear, with Iran and Syria and continued war indefinitely in Afghanistan while giving more tax breaks the wealthiest. Not to mention that ROMNEY IS A CROOK WHO CHEATS ON HIS TAXES! He deducted business expenses for 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 while working at Bain for travel expenses such as hotels, meals and limo services that at that time were legitimate but the day he "retroactively" retired then they were no longer legitimate business expenses that are deductible. Romney, by his own decision made these expense no longer legitimate business expenses because according to him he no longer legitimately worked there. Just like every rich, spoiled brat he wants to have his cake and eat it too. In conclusion look at the GOP presidents and you see that 4/5 or 80% were not only bad but really awful.

The maximum legal amount allowed as an IRA contribution was $1500 from 1975 to 1981, $2000 from 1982 to 2001, $3000 from 2002 to 2004, $4000 from 2004 to 2007, and $5000 from 2008 to 2010. Beginning in 2002, those over 50 could make an additional contribution called a "Catch-up Contribution.

What I want to know is "How did Mitt manage to legally accumulate $101,000, 000 (million) in his IRA when the most he could have legally contributed if he contributed the maximum amount all the years IRA's have existed is only $106,000 (thousand)? And that is with the 'Catch-up' Contribution added.

I'm not saying his IRA investment didn't have positive investment results, but there has been NO investment on this EARTH that would have returned those kind of results with the little piddling amount of money he could have legally contributed over time into that IRA. In 2001, his total contributions would have been only $47,000 (thousand).

I had never considered the issue of the "retroactive" retirement on Romney's taxes. A very good point and probably one of the significant reasons Romney will not release his taxes.

I forgot airfares that were deducted as business expenses (and private jets are not cheap) to and from Boston while he was in Utah but prior to his "retroactive" retirement. He said he came back for Board meetings when he testified about his Massachusetts residency in 2002 when his residency was challenged by his gubernatorial opponent. We know that he took these very basic and legitimate business expense deductions because he already said he took every deduction to which he was entitled. In 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 prior to the decision to retroactively retire he was entitled to these deductions but as I stated before by his own decision he retroactively made these business expenses no longer legitimate. Because he had to distance himself from Bain's horrible record he has decided to create this "retroactive" retirement for political purposes. Now he is in a corner because if he releases the forms he shows he was in fact at Bain in contradiction of most of his previous statements. If he is tied to Bain now he will be associated and responsible (which he is anyway since it is his company that he created and from whom he still receives major benefits and compensation for apparently doing nothing and knowing less) for what he has already quantified as bad by throwing Bain under the bus by making it appear that nobody in their right mind would want to be associated with the horrible injustices that Bain inflicted on the US economy and the US workers after 1999 until today which Romney still gets money from Bain. Why didn't Ann Romney question the need for off-shore accounts? My wife would want to know why I would need numerous off-shore accounts in countries which are known as tax havens to shelter money from the US government. Why didn't Romney have any off-shore accounts in non tax havens? Conspicuous by there absence are any bank accounts in non tax haven Nations. Apparently, he only banks in Nations that are tax havens but never other Nations where he actually does business.

G-9, you'll never get an answer for your questions from these right wingers on here. They're self-deluded and they want to stay self-deluded, just like the conservative organizations that commission slanted polls from Rasmussen. They just don't WANT to realize that Romney is a crook.
