House Ways and Means chairman expects 'full recovery' from lymphoma

J. Scott Applewhite / AP

House Ways and Means Committees Chairman Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich.

U.S. Rep. Dave Camp, a Michigan Republican who chairs the tax-writing House Ways and Means committee, said on Saturday that he will undergo treatment for a "very early, highly treatable and curable type" of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Camp said in a statement posted on his congressional website that he will receive treatment, including chemotherapy, every three weeks over the next few months.

The large B-cell lymphoma, cancer that starts in parts of the body’s immune system, was discovered during a recent routine yearly physical, he said.

“Thankfully my health is otherwise excellent and my doctors and I expect a full recovery and cure,” he said.

Aides told NBC News that the treatment should have minimal impact on Camp’s work schedule.

Camp is deep into the process of beginning comprehensive tax reform. The guidelines for that reform, which Camp wrote, will be voted on in the House this coming week.

Camp was also a member of the deficit Supercommittee, which failed last year, resulting in the automatic cuts scheduled to take place on Jan. 1.

Camp was born and raised in Midland, Mich., where he and his wife and three children reside, according to his official biography.

Everyone has access to the exact same coverage the Representative has.

Stop expecting to get everything for free!

Every state in the union has some sort of insurance pool for the poor and needy.

Give up your daily Starbuck's addiction and be responsible. My first thougtht for every dollar I spend is if that dollar is being spent wisely for the benefit of my family.

He has the type of cancer I had and, if caught early, is very treatable. It's a pretty crappy way to spend your time but, aside from being exhausted and food tasting like mildew and tin and having your hair fall out, coming out on the other side alive is great. Good luck to him. By the way, I worked the whole time I was in treatment.

Best of luck to the Congressman and I hope he has a full recovery.

I'm not sure what Sam thinks makes one classy, but it's my suspicion that having to identify yourself as more classy than your political opponents probably belies the claim.

I'm also troubled by the claims of most people on the left who argue that they just want free health care provided to them. Of course we should help people who are unable to help themselves, but the fact is that the vast majority of people in America can help themselves. If they choose not to then that is their choice, and one I respect, though it should come with a reform that simply says doctors or hospitals do not have to treat or care for you. Owning your own body also means accepting the responsibility for the consequences of your actions.

But in a much larger sense it's even more troubling. This idea that the government is somehow going to care about you more than you is scary. If you assume that there will be no governmental rationing, so that you can get all the care you think you deserve paid for by someone else, then there is no cost controls in order to help make the USA more competitive. This would make Mr. Obama's central claim for health care reform a lie. And yet if you do assume there will be governmental rationing in order to keep costs down, then your desire to get all the health care you want is a delusion, at best, and it makes Mr. Obama's claim that "death panels" don't exist a lie. No matter how you look at this, you've been lied to.

There is a better way, one in which you are more free, the government stays smaller, and you can achieve the stated goals of Mr. Obama, none of which will be achieved by the ACA. And no, it's not single payer. But the left wants none of it because it doesn't make the government more powerful and the individual less powerful. Damn, what an Alice In Wonderland time we live in.

Freedom & Billie Mazza.

All US Officials get their health insurance through the same agency as all federal workers. In the Program the fed pays up to half of the premiums, just like peoples employer plans. If Rep Camp has a better plan the fed is paying less than half.

BTW: the ACA is an upgrade in coverage at a major increase in cost and is going to cost 11% of people their employer plan.

I have an individual plan, which will be a major increase in cost when the ACA takes effect in and adding services I do not want.

Can't we all wish a speedy recovery to any human being that contracts this dread disease?

Hope the Congressman successfully beats this Lymphoma. I am sure that his character and convictions would make it necessary that he drop that nasty ole government health insurance provided and paid for by US citizens and pay his own way since he has worked so hard to Repeal Obama care. It sure would be hypocritical on his part if any of his treatment was paid for by insurance supplied by the government.

Good thing he doesn't have to depend on Obamacare. Actually, I wish he did, then maybe he and the other 534 crooks would have put together a healthcare plan that would work for all of us.

I still wish the best for the man.

      #1.18 - Sun Jul 29, 2012 11:08 AM EDT

For those who say that we should just wish this man well and leave the politics out of it---It's his and his party's politics that have a direct effect on the health of all Americans. So, I agree with those who say that we hope he sees the light and realizes how important health insurance is for all of our people to pursue "life, liberty, and happiness." Get well, Mr. Camp and realize how what you do in Congress affects your fellow man.

And your political party is the one that says, if one is successful in earning happiness it must be taken away and redistributed to those too lazy to achieve their own. I am not responsible for you. I don't know your mother.

It is not governments place to provide health care to you. It is government place to provide regulation on the cost of service and an equal cost and quality of insurance for everyone no matter what their stature is. That means Warren Buffet pays the same for his insurance as Manuel Labor pays for his and gets the quality of service. Of course, Warren will receive better care because he tips better.

"pursue" act of chasing or achieving (NOT to be given a free ride!)

But I don't think having been hugely successful eliminates my obligations to the country and those less fortunate. It is why I donate both time and money to charities with a heavy emphasis on Health Related ones. I serve on the Board of a Major Healthcare Services Organization. Basically that means I get others to donate as well. I am beginning work with another Health Charity; unfortunately that one is too close to home. I beat the NHL but I doubt I will beat this. Inustrial Strength I'm with you on the Jess Jackson Jr. thing but not on the ss, food stamp issue! To many rich people got to many tax breaks for to many years and that's why you are now paying more taxes for the poor! Thanks to Dumbya reducing taxes for rich corps and deregulating everything, the big wigs made their money but put in their pockets, gave their cronies absorbatant bonuses, lived lavish lifestyles, did not re-invest in the economy, and after 8 yrs. of this, under Dumya, the whole thing collapsed in 2008! Banks were closing left and right, automakers almost went under, shutting plants everywhere and laying off thousands, housing came to a standstill, Wall St. crashed etc. President Obama has bent over backwards trying to pass bills to kick start the economy, when he could but didn't get any help from the GOP congress, and did create 4.4 million jobs in the last 4 yrs. However, there are many that are still unemployed and it's not because they are freeloaders or lazy, there just aren't enough jobs out there! Partly because of automation and/or employers hiring younger employees and leaving the poor, layed off workers, that had been at their jobs 20 yrs. but are now in their late 50s or early 60s out in the cold! Who is going to hire them? But yet, they are to young to collect ss, so they have to go on unemployment and when that runs out, Public Aid and foodstamps! And a lot of these 50s and 60s aged people are getting health problems on top of it but since being layed off they don't have any health insurance anymore either, so they have no choice but to try and get disability or free medical. For the record, disability is very hard to get unless you are paralyzed from the waist down! On average, it takes 2 yrs. or more to get it. If it is for health reasons they make you jump thru hoops and you have to go to several doctors. If it is for mental reasons, you have to go get a psych evaluation, which takes them forever to review! My daughter got it for both but had to wait 3 years! It's not all as black and white as you make it sound dude! Obama 2012

          FRANKLY TRUE

Sorry to hear about your MS. How long have you been diagnosed? I have known 2 guys who had it and both of them lived over 20 yrs. before they succumbed to it. I know there is no cure as I use to collect for it, but they do have drugs that can slow it way down and more or less put you in remission, if you aren't already.

One guy I worked with, you couldn't even tell he had it at all. I know one of the symptoms is irregular bone marrow cells. Can't you get a bone marrow translplant if you can find a match? I love your attitude! You admit you are rich but want to help the needy! Wish more of 1% felt that way! They say what goes around comes arounds, maybe your generous time and effort will pay off and they will find a cure or a bone marrow donor . . God bless you! Best wishes~

So glad we're paying for his exuberant healthcare plan. If he had to deal with this illness the same way us common-folk do then he'd be screwed. Hell, in some places the employee would be discretely "let go" so the company doesn't have to pay the increased premium resulting from a "predetermined condition". We couldn't get so lucky with this member of the elite NO organization.

You are paying for a maximum of 1/2 of Rep Camps Health Insurance IF he is on the Federal system. 1/2 is if he is on the lowest cost plan, if he is on a better plan, the Fed pays less than half.

The only government employees that get better than half of their health insurance paid are state an local officials and employees.

I can't believe how many people think that federal officials plans are premium plans totally paid for by the fed. They must be confusing them with firefighters, police, and teachers who might pay as little as $18 per month.

Um, actually Trapper, that's not very accurate. Cure rates for NHL are up dramatically overall. My wife is an 18 year survivor from stage 4 initial diagnosis. There have been some relapses during that time, but the remission periods hold longer and longer.

Luckily I had fairly good Health Insurance and care, something everyone should have--I will never have to worry about affording that. And that is why I believe in the Healthcare Act.

BTW I worked through my illness and treatments, sometimes not at 100%, but not even a perfectly healthy person does that.

Best to this Republican Representative from this very moderate Democrat. Fiscal conservative, but socially liberal...but I recognize that without basic human rights (And to me that includes healthcare) nothing else really matters.

Non-Hodgkins lymphoma is hardly an easy disease to cufe even if it is the most "curable" cancer. I have gone through it, plus breast cancer (twice) plus lung cancer. So that makes four cancers I have survived but the lymphoma took more out of me than the other three. My prayers are for him and so should yours. Amen.

Of course, LBCNHL is life threatening if not treated. And the treatment involves several different chemotherapy drugs so it has lots of adverse side effects. He's likely to be very sick and unable to work during treatment. However, the survival rate is actually good, with some cures and many long term remissions.

I was amazed when I saw a video clip of a guy who had a bad heart valve and they took his own stem cells, and put them directly into the valve and it repaired itself! I also had a gf who was paralyzed for 6 months due to a severe back injury in 1996. They performed an experimental procedure on her and pumped stem cells into her spine and she walked again! She is still walking around today but did have to have more back surgeries and now has rods in her back but she can still walk and drive! Do they ever use stem cell treatment for lymphoma? Keep your chin up! Best wishes!

Nothing like having the tax payers pay for your health care when you are voting to repeal the health care that your constituents might benefit from! Sorry but I have little or no sympathy for him. As one Republican said-"don't get sick-if you do die quickly".

gary-309869----I am not a "Tal-i-ban-Repub-li-can" (a republican that embraces religious ideals much like the Taliban and who's only goal is to force their beliefs upon others). I am not a Tea Party member who cheered (at one of the debates) upon hearing of Rep. Ron Paul's aide's bankruptcy and death due to lack of insurance/medical care. I am not miss representing the ACA like all the Tea/Taliban-Republicans are. I find it ironic that here is a man who has tax payer provided health care and who's party feels it is "good Christian morals" to deny health care to those who he is suppose to represent and that when they are ill that if they are driven into bankruptcy that they have done their job!

I am sure glad this man has good care , and benefits. They should since they are destroying the Military retirees health care. Congress and their ways and means, If the military retirees health care gets in the ways of their budget they sure has the means to f**ks it up, and raise their rates.

It should be a law, if your not at work in congress, you don't get paid, you are let go and you go on social security disability. That is what happens to the rest of us. I say good ridden, one less GOP to open his mouth on the floor!

He will get chemo every 3 weeks, but he should be able to keep his schedule without taking very much time off. The treatment consists of getting an intravenous drip, which only takes a short time at the doctors office. Depending on how he reacts to the chemo, he should be able to go back to work. Worse case scenario, he will have to take a day off, to recover. Unless there are other health concerns, he survival rate should be no worse than any other man his age.

I wish the best of luck to Rep. Camp. However, my husband, age 60, who has worked hard all his life, now has the same type of Lymphoma, has been going through the chemo for 2 months, and has been preparing for the Stem Cell Transplant, then radiation.

Two days ago, the hospital called to say that Medicare will only cover for Stem Cell Transplant, since he's less than 66 y/o, if he's HIV+, is on Medicaid, or works for the Govt.

The hospital then called again to inform him the Stem Cell Transplant is cancelled. They then delayed his last 2 chemo treatments, and he's to start radiation immediately.

Also, while at the radiation center, he saw the front of his hospital radiation chart. Right at the top, highlighted: Medicare Part A&B ONLY.

So, unless you spend your days shooting up, are a gay male, live off the public dole, work for the Govt, or are a millionare, due to stratospheric costs, you're pretty much screwed.

And don't blame just the Republicans for that one. Also, according to the latest on the Farm Bill set to be decided again in Sept., 2012, 76 cents of every Farm Bil Dollar goes to food stamps. Please go to Townhall and vote NO. Thanks.

Jackie Kennedy died from non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I am relatively sure that she had the best of care. There are no guarantees. But I have never met anyone who doesn't prefer to be positive about the outcome. I don't like the gentleman's politics, but I wish him only the best. I know people who have survived this disease.

I don't know what kind of chemo they use for lymphoma. I do know that some types of chemo are extremely debilitating. It remains to be seen how he does with his. Our local mayor was treated for this type of cancer. He is in remission now and has been for quite some time. But his chemo really hit him hard. I saw him when he was about midway through his treatment and he looked awful. He had lost about fifty pounds. So I don't make assumptions about how well this gentleman will be able to do his job. That too, remains to be seen.

                    B

Good luck to you, sir. May you do well with your treatment and emerge in good health.

They did, but they still may lose their health insurer and have to go to the exchanges. The whole point of the bill is to squeeze the insurance companies. Squeeze them enough and they will go belly up.

DB Akron: You must be joking. During the debates in Congress the insurance industy and the drug industry were the biggest lobbying group in Washington in favor of the Affordable Care Act. The insurance/drug companies stand to make billions not even millions of $$ from the ACA.

Your absolutely correct Carl Hubert! I have empathy for the congressman's diagnosis but he is lucky he has the benefits for treatment. Under Obama care "We the people" will have to deal with socialized medicine. You will have to wait several months or year(s) for treatment or surgery. The canadian nurses came to Illinois and other states for work because of the socialized medicine in Canada. I will be out of work once this healthcare bill starts. I work in Open heart surgery and there will be a wait for that type as well as other surgeries. Our government workers are exempt from this healthcare bill. If they were ordinary Joe's they wouldn't have voted for this atrocity. We are living free now but the way things are turning we will be far from it soon. Might as well pack your bags and move to Canada at least the tax system is a heck of a lot better than this.

Sen. I hope everything turns out O.K. for you. Its good that the tax payers furnish you such good insurance that allows you an annual physical, probably done by top Doctors and the best Facility too, I would bet. Most of us, taxpayers, can't afford physicals and those who do have employer paid physicals go to the employers Physicians Asst, not a doctor, and kinda go through the motions. I bet you have full dental insurance too, do you ever think about the children of appalachia going to bed with tooth aches because their parents can't afford dental care for them. How does this insurance we provide for you work. Pays 100% I bet, hugh. One more question Sen. how do you vote when the question of single payer, national health care for all Americans arises. Where do you stand on this issue, that would allow all americans the right to early discovery of disease such as you were afforded. Did you know that most Americans want single payer national health insurance for all Americans? How do you vote knowing that most Americans see the need and want the national health care? Just some things for you to ponder while you are receiving your treatment and praying for God to heal you.

truth -------- truth does hurt. Most Americans don't want any change in their present insurance situation. That's why Obama isn't out there talking about what he's done. He knows it will hurt his reelection chances the more he reminds people of what he has done.

ACA, if you have insurance now, you can keep it. If you don't have insurance now, then you either need to get some, or pay the tax for the coverage we pay for.

PS, I go to the physicians assistant and I like it. Met the doctor once and we didn't hit it off.
