Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. had been treated at an undisclosed location in Arizona for an undisclosed illness.
Updated at 11:50 p.m. ET: Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., struggling with an undefined illness in an undisclosed location for nearly a month, has left treatment in Arizona and has entered the world-renowned Mayo Clinic.
In a statement released through the Rochester, Minn. facility, Jackson said he went in for "extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and gastrointestinal issues."
"Congressman Jackson and his family are grateful for the outpouring of support and prayers that have been received throughout his care," reads a portion of the statement.

Further information would be released as his evaluation proceeds, it said.
Jackson in 2004 underwent gastric bypass surgery, though he kept the procedure a secret for several months.
His absence began in late June with an announcement that he was being treated for exhaustion. Since then only the barest of details have been released.
About a week later, Jackson's office issued a statement noting the congressman's condition is "more serious than we thought and initially believed." Another week went by before an email attributed to Jackson's doctor said the congressman is suffering from "mood disorder."
The doctor noted he is responding positively to "intensive medical treatment at a residential treatment facility."

The congressman’s office added that rumors about Jackson Jr. being treated for alcohol or substance abuse "are not true," but a family friend told NBC News that he has severe clinical depression, a drinking problem or a problem with alcohol and was undergoing treatment in Arizona.
Since his absence began, many have called for more information about Jackson's whereabouts and ailment.
“I think Congressman Jackson and his office and his family would be well advised to advise his constituents of his condition," said Democratic Congressman Steny Hoyer a day before news of Jackson's mood disorder surfaced. "He’s obviously facing a health problem."
"[Jackson’s] health is a number one priority,” Sen. Dick Durbin said. "As a public official though, there reaches a point where you have a public responsibility to tell people what you’re facing and how things are going.”

Gov. Pat Quinn, however, has said he would not call for more information to be released.
"The people of Illinois have good hearts," Quinn said July 11. "I pray for Jesse Jackson Jr. every day."
Jackson's family remains mum on the congressman's exact ailment. His father, Rev. Jesse Jackson, said he is "hopeful" for recovery.
"As a father, I offer no medical diagnosis, only the unconditional love of his family," he said.

Doctors expect to dislodge the Senator's cranium from his rectum during a procedure that should take no more than 15 seconds.
Lead surgeon, Dr. Pieter Fitzinseider, said that the surgical team believes a swift kick to the Senator's head should remedy the condition.
If times permits the team will also attempt removing Jackson's foot from his mouth, a chronic problem for the often speaking without thinking Senator.

So it is not possibly to be black and come out with the news of the potential diagnosis of a mood disorder without eliciting harsh comments.
He is using this medical condition as a way to hide from investigators looking into to him for corruption. At the same time he is building his diminished capacity defense should criminal charges be brought over his attempt to buy Obama's Senate seat or any of the other corrupt acts he is being investigated over. In the meantime he is leaving his constituents without the representation they are entitled to. He obviously has major mental health issues and needs to resign from Congress so that he can be replaced and the people of his district can have the competent representation they are entitled to. This will also stop him from collecting the paycheck he is receiving that he is not entitled to. At a minimum he should be placed on unpaid leave in accordance with the federal government FMLA policy, not allowed to continue to collect his paycheck when he is not in Washington doing his job.

Then Bill Clinton pardoned Reynolds from prison on his way out of office. Jesse Jr's sucessor Mel Reynold's is a sex offender by defination yet since he was pardoned he's back in Chicago working for the City in a program for teenage kids! Many think Reynold's, a Rhode Scholar, was railroaded out of office so Jackson's putz kid could get the seat. Ah ya gotta love Chicago Machine Politics folks! Now it's all the way to the White House with Bill Daley calling all the shots on the campaign trail. Theres an awful lot of people (too many) in this country that are absolute heartless S.O.Bs. Reading over your comments here, makes me weep for humanity, or at least that portion of it residing in these United States.
You can think whatever you want of Jackson Jr. and Sr and their politics. but knock it off with the derisive comments regarding mental health. There are millions (yes, millions) of people in this country struggling with mood disorders, and thousands upon thousands have their lives significantly affected by it to the point of disabling illness requiring hospitalization. These are not people who lose touch with reality, these are people, the coping skills of which, have been overwhelmed, regardless of the situation. The majority of you ALL can be brought low by depression and anxiety, under enough pressure. And men go the longest without help or accepting they need it..
The reason society is so wracked with mood disorders today, is because our society has become a pressure cooker. Everything is constant, too fast, transient. Predatory behavior is everywhere, as is cruel attitudes. The demands on many many people are more than they can humanly achieve. Its a perfect storm for break-down. Even machines break down under too much stress, and we are much more fragile than steel and gears.
Its hard enough trying to manage a mood disorder without reading all of these ignorant and hurtful comments. I can assure you, that many of you posters here, have caused other readers to struggle today with thier own mood disorder more than they otherwise would have because of these comments.
So to any of you reading this who ARE struggling, and many of you are struggling silently, I know this...
Just remember that when you read these kinds of hurtful comments - these people have no clue. They have never experienced what sufferers of a mood disorder go through, or for that matter, any other mental disorder. If any of them experienced enough stress to break them down, then they would understand. But there are millions of us who DO understand, and I am one of them...

Putting aside all of the nonsense, Mr. Jackson is getting paid to work as a lawmaker. If he is unable to fulfill his duties, as has been the case sinse mid May, then he needs to allow the Governor to appoint someone to complete his term. It is seriously selfish to continue to hold such an important position and draw a pay check for it, when someone is mentally incapable of fulfilling his duties. It's time for the Democratic leadership to do their job, and talk him into stepping down, then taking his time to fight his personal battles.

I must object to the overwhelmingly racist comments about Rep Jackson and his family and I'm surprised the moderator hasn't banned every single one. Whoever thought racism and prejudice had died in this country must not read the comments on this site very much. Since you don't know Rep Jackson or his father, you can't possibly have any insight into his condition.
And you get someone like Michele Bachmann who takes a year off to run for president, continues to get paid, and doesn't even fulfill her basic duties like voting on legislation.

Actually, all politics aside, his previous surgery could be causing a serious problem.
It's very unfortunate but I've witnessed too many people that have had this surgery and when they go down, they go down hard. Really wonder if it's worth the risks and lifestyle changes that are forced upon the patients after opting for this kind of surgery.
I'm happy for him that he got help.

If he's at the Mayo Clinic, I would assume he has a serious medical problem. I don't know about alcohol or drugs but I wouldn't think one would go to the Mayo for those things. Politics aside, I will reserve judgment and hope that whatever the problem is, he recovers.

Lois, Mayo Clinic also has a store in Arizona. About two years ago, they declined to take Medicare patients. (just an additional factoid)
The symptoms that are being divulged would indicate classical "stress-related" symptoms. Since Jackson is nothing more than a mouth in DC, the stress is probably related to guilt. Obviously, his daddy didn't teach him how to handle guilt. (Sr. hid his infidelity for years) (another factoid)

Yes, I am really serious. I am no fan of father or son; as a matter of fact, I loathe Jesse Jackson, Sr.; however, I am willing to allow the possibility that Jr. has an illness, be it physical or mental. If, as most of you seem to think, he is just "hiding out", he will have to answer to his constituents for that.

Actually Mad, I have to disagree. One of the main problems he faces is that his brain isn't working accurately and effectively in a position that requires it. Politicians aren't manual laborers. I don't care about his illness, the people of his district deserve to be represented. Unfortunately he will still probably win reelection as the majority of his district would vote for NO representation from him before they would vote for the only candidates slated against him since they are republicans. He covered his illness for enough time that no other democratic challenger could get on the ballot. Typical Chicago politics just like our former county commissioner. He learned from the best, the Stroger family.

the story was written up in the New Orleans-Times Picayune - but was pulled - after it was all set up - to be printed.
Obviously, The Morial Dynasty bought out the Scandal -
since it was two days - before the Mayor's re-election in New Orleans.
During that term, he had a knock-out-drag-out fight with one of his lovers - who was sent packing- to not tarnish his reputation - in the closet.
The Morial Dynasty wanted to remain in power - and needed to change the City Charter - to do it. When it was placed for a vote, not even the Black Community wanted him to have a Third term - and voted it down - even though New Orleans was 75% black.
Now Marc Morial is the President of the Urban League - getting chummy with Obama

Jesse Sr. isn't talking about his son's condition then Jessie Jr must have very serious substance abuse problems.The Mayo clinic shadow is probably a farce and a way Jessie Jr to come out of medical treatment in the very near future without any real explanation.Remember his dad was the guy who was present at MLK death only because he had been eariler dismissed by King and was there to try and persuade King for another chance.The best part of the story is that Jackson wasn't even on the second level when MLK was shot but ran up afterwards.He supposedy took out a hankerchief and blooded it with Kings blood to make it seem like he was trying to help him,eventhough,everyone knew he was already dead.If Jessie Sr.told me the sun was going to appear in the east tomorrow in the morning,i'd get up and look west!

The point is that if Jackson is bi-polar, or a meth addict, or whatever, that 'problem' ought to be shared with the public. As a member of the House he is involved with making LAWS which affect ALL of us. I hope he gets the best treatment he can get. But to hide this from the public? He's a friggin LEGISLATOR Balancedbrain! Do we want our policians to be able to hide their mental illnesses from the public? Aren't we in enough political/economic turmoil without having to worry if our legislators are fit to serve? How can the electorate be given enough information to make a decision come November if Jackson's 'illness' is unknown and kept unknown to the public?
