Why Obama's Jewish margin in Florida could be critical

Selma and Kenneth Furst were among the hundreds of thousands of Florida's Jewish voters who helped put Barack Obama in the White House four years ago.

This time out, the Fursts are still solidly behind the president, but they aren't so sure about some of their Jewish neighbors and friends.

"It's a hard decision, for people to make up their minds," said Selma Furst, 91, who lives in a condo community in Tamarac, a city of 60,000 near Fort Lauderdale, with her husband, Kenneth, 94. "My neighbors talk about it a lot, and we think about it all the time."

Polls suggest Obama has lost some ground since the 2008 election among Jewish voters in Florida, a key battleground state. That could have a major impact in what is likely to be a tight race, analysts say. While Jews make up only about 3.4 percent of the population in Florida, they have historically turned out in disproportionately high numbers.

"From the polling I've seen, the president's support among Jewish voters is at historic lows, compared to other Democrats for president, and it's something we're seeing anecdotal evidence of on the ground," said Alberto Martinez, an adviser to the campaign of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

"No one expects Romney to win the Jewish vote. But any level of attrition for the president is going to endanger his reelection in a state like Florida," he said, recalling the 2000 election, in which George W. Bush won the state by 537 votes.

It's not clear how much support the president can afford to lose in Florida. Andre Fladell, a longtime Democratic activist from Delray Beach, said he doesn't believe a 10 percent to 14 percent drop in the polls among Jewish voters would make a difference, but "a 24 (percent) to 26 percent drop would," he said.

The key, he said, will be voting trends among the almost 500,000 Jewish voters in the Democratic stronghold of South Florida.

Debate there over Obama administration policies on everything from healthcare and jobs to Israel and the Middle East has crept into neighborhood events, temple meetings and other social functions in the Jewish retirement communities.

The administration's policies on Israel are one reason some Jewish voters may be reconsidering their support for Obama, said Martinez, particularly in the face of a perceived nuclear threat from Iran.

Obama has also had a rocky relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with the two clashing over Israel's settlement policy and efforts to revive the peace process.

The still-struggling economy, nationally and in Florida - where, with more than 1 million people out of work, the unemployment rate is higher than the national average - is also a primary factor. "The bigger picture is that Jewish voters, like all voters, have been impacted by (it)," said Martinez.

"I voted for Obama in 2008, but I don't anticipate voting for him in the upcoming election," said William Levine, a Boca Raton, Fla., resident. He said Obama's position on Israel and Mideast affairs was "a significant factor," but he also cited domestic issues, including the president's handling of the economy.

What the polls say

A Gallup Poll released in June found what some have called a surprising drop in Jewish support for the president. The national poll showed 64 percent of registered Jewish voters are behind Obama, with Romney pulling 29 percent.

Gallup Polls just prior to the 2008 election had Obama garnering 74 percent among Jewish voters, with 23 percent favoring GOP nominee John McCain. Exit polls indicated the president received as much as 78 percent of the Jewish vote on Election Day.

The latest Gallup survey was relatively small: It polled 576 registered Jewish voters from April 11 to June 5, with a margin of error of plus or minus five percentage points. Republicans seized on the figures.

Small population: Big voice

The new polling figures are noteworthy in part because Jewish voters have historically turned out in greater numbers than other larger voting blocs, such as Hispanics and African Americans.

Ira Sheskin, a University of Miami professor who runs the Jewish Demography Project of the Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies, told Reuters that upwards of 90 percent of registered Jewish voters usually turn out on Election Day. In 2008 that figure reached 96 percent.

"Jews are probably 7 (percent) to 8 percent of the people who actually vote in Florida," said Sheskin, who has tracked Jewish voting records since the 1970s. "So if Obama only gets 64 percent of the Jewish vote in November, that could be significant. But it's only July ... so it's too early to declare."

Jewish voters: By the numbers

Sheskin noted that while Jews consider U.S. policy on Israel an important issue, it's not a driving force in candidate choice.

"They're voting on the economy and social issues, and Jews are overwhelmingly pro-choice, in favor of same-sex marriage, the Affordable Healthcare Act ... and are much closer to Democrats than Republicans."

Some Democrats say Obama's support among Jews is rising. An American Jewish Committee survey in March found Obama with less support than in the most recent poll. Then, he bested Romney by a margin of 61 percent to 28 percent.

"There actually has not been an erosion of support," said Florida congresswoman and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. "Consistently, you have major polling that is actually far more sophisticated, with larger sample sizes of Jewish voters that have been done very recently, that show the president's support is actually quite a bit stronger than that poll showed." Gallup Polls in June 2008 showed Obama held only 62 percent of the Jewish vote in Florida, before rising to 74 percent in November.

Political tensions

Martinez and other Republicans point to some anecdotal indications that Obama's lock on the Jewish vote in Florida may not be ironclad.

Last May tempers flared during an event at Congregation L'Dor Va-Dor in Lake Worth that brought together local Republican and Democratic leaders for a debate provocatively titled, "Obama and Israel: Friend or Foe?" Speakers in support of Obama were interrupted with frequent insults, and moderator Rabbi Barry Silver had to step in to maintain order, according to reports in the Florida Jewish Journal.

Wasserman Schultz, the first Jewish woman from Florida elected to the House of Representatives, attributed such high-profile events to partisan politics.

"The reason lying and distorting and misrepresenting President Obama's stellar record on Israel is because they know they can't get anywhere with Jewish voters in America on domestic issues," she told Reuters. "So in the battleground states in particular - like Florida and Pennsylvania and Ohio, where the Jewish communities are more concentrated - they are deliberately spreading lies and mistruths."

Although Obama has yet to visit Israel as president, he did make two trips to the Holy Land while he was in the Senate, including one during the 2008 election campaign. George W. Bush did not visit Israel until the last year of his second term, Obama supporters point out.

Supporters defend Obama's record on Israel, saying the president has consistently shown his willingness to fund and promote efforts to maintain Israel's military strength. Wasserman Schultz said Obama spearheaded efforts to impose "harsh sanctions" on Iran to halt its nuclear programs, supported a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and backed development of the "Iron Dome" missile defense system for Israel.

Reaching out

The Romney campaign has increased efforts to make inroads with Jewish voters in recent months. Martinez said the campaign has opened 30 offices in the state and is stepping up "outreach to communities, and specifically the Jewish community in Florida."

Romney's Florida campaign has also tapped Jewish Republican Tevi Troy - former deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services under President George W. Bush - as an adviser.

In addition, the former Massachusetts governor recently announced plans to host a fundraising event in Jerusalem - at $60,000 or more per plate - on July 29, the Jerusalem Post reported. Campaigning in Florida earlier this year, Romney accused Obama of being "critical of our friends," citing the president's objections to Israel's settlement policy.

Mik Moore, a spokesman for the pro-Obama super-PAC known as the Jewish Council for Education and Research, acknowledged that Republican efforts to woo the Jewish vote may be having an impact in Florida.

"We know there's about 14 (percent) to 15 percent of American Jewish voters who voted for (Obama) before who right now are not ready to vote for him," he told Reuters. "This year, young people are not as energized as they were in 2008, so the challenge ... is talking to (swing voters) about the president's record and contrasting it with Romney's record."

The Obama campaign has ramped up its Jewish outreach efforts, too. In June the president's chief of staff, Jack Lew - an observant Jew - met with South Florida campaign operatives about how to turn out voters through the campaign's Jewish Community Leadership Council program.

Wasserman Schultz has also been working for Obama in South Florida, penning op-ed pieces in newspapers and Jewish publications detailing the president's record on Israel.

Selma Furst said she understands why many of her Jewish friends and neighbors are wavering in their support for Obama. She says she had to overcome her own doubts about Obama when she voted for him in 2008.

Now, though, she is comfortable with her decision. "I feel he's had four years' experience and maybe that four years taught him something," she said. "I know not everything is his fault. You can't make gold out of paper."

Maybe I over analyze things, but I never got the Jewish liberal concept- especially supporting this President. To give it perspective:

The President hasn't made a state visit to Israel yet, he forced the Israeli PM to come through the back door of the White House for a visit (without a state dinner/event). The President has loudly demanded that Israel give away their lands back to the 1967 borders, condemned them for development within their borders, and actively is endorsing/meeting with Israel's foes. Essentially the US foreign policy towards Israel has been we don't support you, while we are happy to take your campaign money and shake your hands at expensive dinners.

Why would Jews support the President? Are they happy with the distribution of wealth liberalism? Do they think the President really supports Israel (claiming that he's been the most active FOR Israel while the facts show otherwise)? I don't get it. Anyone??

His allegiance to Islam forbids him to make friends with Christians or Jews.

No other religion is accepted by his Allah except Islam. (Quran, 2:256)(Koran)

He cannot accept the American Constitution since it is based on Biblical principals and he believes the Bible to be corrupt.

Islam, Muhammad, and the Quran does not allow freedom of religion and expression. Democracy and Islam cannot co-exist. Every Muslim government is either dictatorial or autocratic.

He must submit to the Mullahs (spiritual leaders), who teach annihilation of Israel and destruction of America, the great Satan.

I think it's really quite simple Joe. Most American Jews consider themselves to be Americans, not Israelis, and they are socially liberal. They will not support a candidate like Romney who wants to make abortion illegal, who will deny equal rights to same-sex couples and who will take from the poor and the middle class in order to give more tax breaks to his rich buddies.

I think the article says why the Jews don't vote Republican. It is the Pro-Choice, pro-gay marriage, and Government Health Care. If you understand Jewish law the Pro-Choice, and pro-gay Marriage are sin and unacceptable. They also want to listen to government instead of God, so the ACA is a no-brainer too.

They are no different than the Christians in that instead of following Gods commandments, they become "a law unto themselves."

They like the Christians need to come to a point where they are going to follow God with all their hearts. If you change just one thing from what God asks, then you make yourselves your own god, in your own image.

The Jews have gone to do thier own "thing" throughout history, but one thing comes clear, they at some point have a change of heart and follow God with their whole hearts.

Look, I'll be Honest and Candid. I'm not only a Republican but I'm also Jewish, and me and all my Republican and Jewish friends are definitely going to be voting a straight Democratic ticket, come this November 2012. Here's why!

Us Jewish people are truly an honest and moral lot. We don't like liars or those who don't pay their "fair-share" of taxes, and who might be engaging in "shady financial dealings".

Hidden Swiss bank accounts? Slush funds and laundried money in off-shore Cayman Island shell companies? Nontransparent and "lost" tax-returns that might be hiding even more "shady financial dealings" with China and Mexico and who knows what else, maybe even Middle Eastern Terrorists groups! Seriously, who knows?

That's why as a Republican and somebody who is Jewish, I'm encouraginge all my Republican friends and Jewish brothers and Ron Paul supporters, and of course all you Undecided voters in Florida, to vote a straight Democratic ticket come this November 2012.

It's the right thing to do and it will be Fun to send Mitt Romney and his almost extinct dinosaur GOP Republican party, back to the "Dung Heap of History" where they all belong!

I'm sure you posters and readers all agree, right?

Adam 201....- Your question was curious, so I tried to look President Obama and Church Attendence. Here's what I came up with:

1st year as President- Attended Church 3 times (but not on Christmas). Source: ABCNews

2nd year: All I could find was Easter service attended. I didn't know, but learned that he made a proclimation about Ramadan, Eid al Fitr, Eid al Adha, Hajj and Earth Day, but didn't for Easter (a tradition).

This year: I found that his church attendence has risen during the election cycle. The Huffington Post noted that he's been attending more church while campaigning.

What does that prove- it's all up to you, but it is possible to get some idea of a president's church attendence.

Adam, I don't think it's quite as simple as you make it. After all, why do rich people in Connecticut vote against their own ostensible interests?

There's an issue of principle that makes the two seeming contradictions fundamentally different. It is one thing for rich people in rich states to say, "tax me more; I can help my fellow American in need," and it is a completely different one for poor people in poor states people to say, "tax rich people less; I don't need my fellow American to help me." In keeping with the simplified (and overgeneralizing) terms that this conversation has used -- which the paper you presented more or less validate -- let's just say that it's rational within human nature to be (a) altruistic (i.e., rich people in blue states wanting to give more), (b) selfish (i.e., rich people in red states wanting to give less), and (c) welcoming of help (i.e., poor people in red and blue states wanting to receive more), but not (d) dismissive of help.

So, no, when I see those rich folks in Connecticut or the Bay Area or the North Shore of Chicagoland, I don't think they're being irrational by wanting to give more to help raise the standard of living of the country. I think they're being perfectly reasonable and patriotic. When I see the less fortunate folks in Mississippi or Alabama, with one hand collecting food stamps and receiving Medicare/Medicaid and with the other ranting about how the government collects too much in taxes and shouldn't help the poor, well, I can't help but wonder what's going on in their minds. I don't think Warren Buffett stupid, what with the fact that he's one of the richest people on Earth, and he's a strong advocate for more progressive taxation.

With three exceptions (NV, TX, FL), all of the states that send more tax dollars to the Federal Government than they receive from it in aid are staunchly or fairly Democratic. On the other hand, out of the ten states that receive more than $1.5 in help from the Federal Government for every dollar they send in taxes, all but two (VA, NM) are staunchly Republican.

Any Jew who votes for Obama must have a death wish for Israel. No American president in history has exhibited less support for the Jewish homeland. Viewer K please do not act like you speak for Jewish Americans. Your views are unfounded, or at least provide no proof. the fact that you indirectly bring up Birther issues show that one: you aren't Jewish, two, are not smart enough to be jewish, and three are not smart enough to defend a position without running to the antisemetic card.

So if you are Jewish, then please go educate yourself and stop being an embarrassment Jews. IF you aren't Jewish then you really have no basis to speak for anyone of Jewish decent besides yourself.

Many of the Jewish people in Florida are retired...and like all retired people, they are concerned about their Social Security and Medicare, which Democrats seem to support more strongly. As for their supporting Israel, that is hardly surprising, considering how much Irish-Americans did to win Ireland's freedom. The reason Eamon De Valera lived to be its first president is that he had been born in America, so the British chose not to shoot him along with the other leaders of the Easter Week Rebellion, even though he at once returned to his native country to drum up American support.

The Republicans are concerned that Medicare and Social Security don't go bankrupt. The Democrats raid MC and SS to fund their pork projects and entitlement programs.

Cassandra wake and smell the coffee. Your Dems took $600 BILLION out of medicare. That is right there well be less healthcare for seniors if you can find a doctor that will accept an medicare patients. Like Pelosi said read the healthcare bill and learn what is in it.

Prove it Llyod! Your full o S**T.

And lack of common sense, where did Obama and the Democrats put that $600 billion. Ha ha. You should look into fact check since you don't check facts.

          From Fact check

The nonpartisan CBO said — also on March 18 — that the Senate bill combined with the House modifications "would produce a net reduction in federal deficits of $138 billion over the 2010–2019 period as result of changes in direct spending and revenue." CBO said the deficit reductions are likely to continue into the next decade as well — by one-quarter to one-half of a percent of the value of the nation’s economy as measured by gross domestic product, or GDP.

So how can a bill that is officially projected to reduce the deficit by $138 billion result in $600 billion in "new borrowing"? The ad’s sponsors don’t say, except to cite Fortune magazine briefly on screen. That refers to a March 12 article by Fortune Senior Editor at Large Shawn Tully, who’s been a relentless critic of Democratic health care legislation. Tully argues, for one thing, that the $371 billion cost of staving off a scheduled 21 percent cut in physicians’ fees under Medicare should be charged to the health care bill, even though it was handled separately and is not actually part of the current legislation. He even adds interest expense to the "borrowing" that he claims will result.

That accounts for roughly half the difference between CBO’s accounting and Tully’s. He makes other arguments as well, which we won’t attempt to summarize here. The Chamber’s TV ad, however, might have been more accurate had it attributed its claim to "the opinions of one business magazine columnist."

          Adam

You need to get up-to-date on the cost of Healthcare.

The CBO, in an update to its budget outlook, now estimates that the overall coverage cost of Obama's Affordable Care Act will drop slightly, to $1.083 trillion over the next decade. Last year, the CBO estimated the price tag to be $1.131 trillion over the same period of time.

The new estimates also showed that the law will cover fewer people than originally projected. According to the latest report, the number of uninsured Americans will be reduced by 30 million by 2016-- 2 million fewer than last year's estimates.

Jewish American here. Anecdotally, it seems like only the older generation is really deeply concerned about Israel and middle east issues. My grandmother is always sending pro-Israeli and anti-Palestinian e-mails.

For the rest of us, we're much more focused on the United States. The younger generation, like most religions, has become increasingly secular. We don't really feel any personal or emotional attachment to the middle east. For younger Jews, it's mostly about historical interest.

Elderly Jewish voters in Florida will vote for any Democrat in any election. They don't want to think or be bothered by facts. They still believe that Democrats are like Truman--strong, honest and steeped in traditional American values--when in fact they are more like Pelosi, Reed and Schumer--political hacks with far left visions of a socialist America, (with them at the top as the ruling elite, of course).

What Jews do is invent things. 25% of all Noble Prizes were awarded to Jews, even though they make up only .2% of the world population. The awards are in medicine, economics, technology, from a cure for polio to Google. Every time you use your T.V. remote, you can thank a Jew. What have you all done for us? A few million dollars for Israel? wOW.

To the Florida Jewish community. Remember this:

Obama has weakened the US/Israel relationship.

Obama has bowed his head in greeting Islamic country leaders.

Obama wants Israel to return to the boarders that existed prior to the 7 Day War.

Consider what another 4 years of Obama in the White House will do to further erode the US/Israel relationship! Let's rebuild what has been lost with that relationship and protect what is left by putting Romney in office.

Pres. Obama said that the Middle East should go back to the 1967 borders . At that time, Israel was 12 miles wide and a rocket or mortar could strike any place in the country that it wanted. Going back to the 1967 borders as the start of peace talks would be almost amount to an annihilation of Israel. Pres. Obama is the first anti-Israeli president that I know of and he will be the first Democrat but I will not vote for!! Also, he has done absolutely nothing for our economy!

The Palestinians have made it clear, Worldwide, the DESTRUCTION and annihilation of Israel. Israel could have destroyed the Palestinians years ago if they didn't want Peace. This is all Israel wants, because the Palestinians need Israel and has NOTHING that Israel wants or needs from them. You liberals make up illogical decisions based on little or no information. He has shown he is anti Israel and anti Judaism, except when the vote is needed. Obama is anti religion. Obama supports the Palestinians, due to being a Muslim and financially. I doubt Obama would come through if a war breaks out in the Middle East. America and Israel cannot afford another 4 years of Obama. In addition, Obama has done everything in his power to divide and ruin America, by not demanding more out of Congress and being a very, very weak president, both domestic and especially internationally. Unless you’ve been living under a Golan Heights rock pile for the last few years you should know that the US economy turned to s**t in 2008/2009 and we’re only just now trying to get out of that hole. The fewer dollars we have available must be spent wisely between strategic, diplomatic and effective tactical (but less costly) efforts across the entire Middle East in order to protect our regional interests. We need money to move personnel and weaponry across the theater in Pakistan/Afghanistan while continuing to support intelligence efforts to undermine any effort that destabilizes the region and the world any further. All that s**t cost money that we lose when people like Mr. Flip Flopper sticks his money in offshore accounts and tax shelters to minimize their tax liability. And, it doesn’t help that hard-liners like BeBe Neten-yahoo fail to understand that stubbornness and sheer stupidity re: peace negotiations and settlements does a disservice to ALL of us! I count many individuals of Jewish persuasion among my friends. But, as Moses himself observed during the sojourn, if you’re too freakin’ obstinate and stubborn to think no other opinions matter, then I say vote for the guy who’d say just about anything to get your damn vote. By November he’ll be touting his non-existent Jewish heritage. Just don’t b**ch about not being able to get a colonoscopy with a voucher after he “repeals Obamacare” and then raids Medicare to give Israel everything it wants. ‘Nuf said.

It's all about money to some. America cannot survive if we allow Obama to continue to alienate our long-time friends and allies. He kow-tows to the Saudi king while heaping crap on those who have stood with us for decades. Pathetic!

It seems that again liberals can only rant without saying a complete sentence to say what they are ranting about. Then you make some uneducated, unsupported, ignorant comment, that makes NO sense what so ever. As far as you being Jewish, I doubt it, because most Jews even being liberal can talk intelligently, which you have said nothing at all. Just because you may have had a mohel do your brisse, you are still a real schmuck. You liberals don't even know why you are voting for Obama, because it sure isn't due to him improving the employment, Welfare, business and even people moving to other countries. Obama has tripled the Welfare and Food Stamp programs and has the highest unemployment in history. He has the highest deficit in history above all previous presidents. Unemployment is over 550,000 jobs less than when Obama took office. You cannot state one(1) true thing that Obama has done to improve anything in America. You liberals are the cause of America heading in the same direction as Germany took before it became Communist. You are truly a mitzvah for the Jewish religion. not. You are definitely a poor excuse of a person in your comments, needless to say a poor Jewish example supporting a want to be Hitler. Try reading for once in your life about the Holocaust and you may change your mind about Obama. The only difference between Obama and Hitler, is Hitler was a genius and Obama has a Narcissistic personality disorder, which everything he does or says shows it and proves it..

                      Hey Fuzzhead--

You're obviously NOT a bright Jew (if indeed you are one). You sound more like a disgruntled, Glen-Beckian, Nazi skin-head who picked up a few Yiddish terms lunching at the corner deli on matzah ball soup and knishes between the Klan indoctrination sessions!

It is sad to say, but it is not the Jews who are abandoning the Democratic Party little by little and bit by bit. It is the Democratic party moving far to the left, who have abandoned (among others) the JEWS. This party is no longer the party of F.D.R. and Harry Truman, who helped at great personal expense to establish the State of Israel in 1948., Nor is it the party of J.F.K. who now, would be too "conservative" to receive the Democratic nomination. Hopefully my people will eventually regain their "seychil" and become INDEPENDENT.

You liberals are really a JOKE. You are too ignorant to see the bus coming. The bus has come and running over all Americans for nearly 4 years. Obama is the biggest JOKER and Fraud in history. I can not believe how the socialist education system has brainwashed you people. From Obama, unions, politicians, government employees, are all screwing America. We are no longer a republic, but heading on path for a socialist, communist America. More Americans denounced their nationality last year than in history, due to Obama. There is no more middle class at all. The more people on government entitlements the more power and control Obama and the government have. They are controlling ALL Americans, just like Nazi Germany. Wake up America and don't let the radical, illogical liberals, win their socialist, communist beliefs over the rest of us. Obama means "1 world government, 1 world religion"!
