Should Mitt Romney release more of his past tax returns?

Remember all the demand for Sen Obamas tax records, background info, high school pranks, business dealings? Oh I forgot, nobody cared then. It is really sad what this distraction filled campaign has devolved into. We should all be ashamed, especially our commander-in-chief.

All this talk about Obama and his college transcripts and birth certificate is rediculous. How are these two things even being compared? The question is about taxes, not some conspiracy that Obama wasn't born in the US or whatever this new, made up college controversy is. All Presidential candidates are asked to release their tax returns. This is not something new, or something that is only being asked of Romney. Obviously, there are things that Willard doesn't want people to see. John McCain saw it and didn't choose him as VP.

Because it sheds light on his background and character, two things people seem to just, what, assume? Yet there are all these comments from people who profess to know what Romney is thinking (hint: pure evil). That's a neat trick.

I'm not sure it really matters if BO releases his transcripts, but why not? Does he have something to hide? Oh wait, now I sound like the rest of you.

Romney and his anti-women's rights issue makes me want to puke. Then add the fact he's not willing to show more tax returns and he is running for U.S. President? Oh please!!! He's a piece of work!

All that birther junk is just a cover story for rampant racism. He is hated because he is black and because he is a democrat. If he were white, then there would be some other ridiculous reasons to hate him. Not policy issues (although in the eyes of many republicans, especially the direction it has headed in the last decade, all democrats are communists or socialists), but personal ridiculous ones. So being a democrat is plenty good reason to actually hate him, and throw in being black ("other" "different than the majority") and plenty of people hate him just for that and are willing to believe and say the most outrageous and hideous things about him and his family. It is shameful and completely un-American only, so sadly, so very American. What are we becoming? Ignorant, uneducated, vile and vicious.

All that racist junk is just a cover story for Barack's lousy record.

He is the most divisive, arrogant president we could have picked. How anyone can continue to support him is beyond me.

He should release more tax returns when OBAMA releases a real birth certificate. Somebody's hiding something? Really!

This is just another Democratic ploy to see if they can find some more dirt to make a media case with.

Another idiotic BIRTHER gets on here and demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt how un-American he/she is; how little they understand what and who is a citizen of the United States of America by manner of birth; how thinly veiled their racist attitude is towards the duly elected President of the United States.

@TAP-1535024, I've posted this twice already so therefore you make BIRTHER #3 to be schooled this morning, per the United States Department of Homeland Security's webpage (http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.eb1d4c2a3e5b9ac89243c6a7543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=a2ec6811264a3210VgnVCM100000b92ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=a2ec6811264a3210VgnVCM100000b92ca60aRCRD):

      Citizenship

If you meet certain requirements, you may become a U.S. citizen either at birth or after birth.

To become a citizen at birth, you must:

      • Have been born in the United States or certain territories or outlying possessions of the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction of the United States; OR
      • had a parent or parents who were citizens at the time of your birth (if you were born abroad) and meet other requirements

Now, go take your racist and ignorant self back to the rock you crawled out from under and let the rest of us rational thinking people debate the merits of Mr. Romney releasing or withholding his tax returns from earlier than 2011.

      SMDH again!

And what are all you liberal left wingers going to say if he releases more tax returns and there is nothing there? Ask for additional years?

Let's talk real issues facing this country and cut all the mud raking crap.

You have a lot of nerve talking about mud raking crap given your previous posting at #49. And so what if they ask Mr. Romney for additional information? You Obama haters have been asking him for a Birth Certificate since the day he was sworn in as our President, and ignoring the fact that if he had not been qualified with respect to his citizenship someone in the Democratic Primary would have found it out. If they ask Mr. Romney for twenty years of returns so what? It's been reported that he gave the McCain campaign over 20 years of returns when they were vetting him as the possible VP in 2008. It's also been reported that Mr. Romney is asking for more than 2 years of financial information (to include tax returns) from the individuals he is vetting for VP. But he won't release more than his 2011 & 2012 returns to the very Americans that he is asking to vote for him in November? What's worse is that people like yourself think that such behavior on Mr. Romney's part is acceptable even thou it goes against the grain of all the previous modern presidential campaign disclosures since Mr. Romney's own father released 12 years of tax return information during his failed presidential campaign in 1968.

No, you idiots don't even know your own government's rules regarding U.S. Citizenship with respect to birth; but we should talk about real issues with uninformed haters like you?

Just opening the hood before buying a used car. Show wealth from investments, inheritance, and etc. Prove success is from own ideas not Dad's. Since dad and family are not running for president. Then tell us what is broken and how to fix it and lastly tell us why we should believe that a benefactor of the broken system would want to fix it.

P.s. you still need to explain why being against raising taxes on the top 2% is not protecting the broken system.

Been waiting, still waiting. Window starting to close, take your time.

Romney is just a blatant lying cheating never helped the middle class or poor, childish fool who obviously thinks very little of the public’s intelligence.

Stay on topic Romney no one is begrudging being rich, just those who get rich by continuously taking more and never give back anything in return or people who pay less taxes than teachers, secretaries and janitors!

It is not class warfare, it just not fair! By the way, how did Romney create jobs in AMERICA and what exactly are his plans to do so? What a flake and a fake!

Exactly. Nobody minds wealthy folks being wealthy - it's the ones like Romney who act like they are entitled to not only be wealthy, but also take action to prevent others from having the same opportunity.

The President states that those who have built wealth did so as part of a bigger economy, and Romney calls it class warfare.

So not giving this information is proof to you that Romney is hiding or covering up something that would undoubtably sink his run for president? I wonder what Obama is afraid of to protect Holder and possibly himself in hiding the fast and furious documents? HMMMMMMMMM

You mean the "fast and furious" campaign that was started by and run by the Bush administration in 2006 and continued for three years until they left office? They called it by a different name (Operation Wide Receiver) that the wingnuts have chosen, but it was the exact same program. During that time thousands of semi-automatic and automatic weapons were put in the hands of Mexican drug cartels and various other unsavory characters. Can you point me to your outrage posts that were penned during those three years against the Bush administration for this exact same behavior? I'll be waiting.

Release the returns. This is like the person who takes the 5th. in Court, it's a legal defense move, guaranteed by the Constitution, but everybody immediately believes the person is guilty and trying to hide the evidence of their guilt. Release the last 10 years and lets get on with what's important.

What difference do President Obama's grades in high school and college make? Romney hasn't shown his high school and college grades either. Should Romney have to produce those as well? President Obama has released his taxes - why won't Romney. He must be hiding a doosy!

You liberals are unbelievable. What difference does it make 1 year or 10 years. You pay on what you earn minus expenses. Its so simple even you should be able to figure it out. The tax return item is a joke. Most of you liberals and conservatives "fudged" your tax returns at one time or another. If you say no? You know you are not being completely honest. If you made more money but could put it in tax deferred status you would. Most of this rhetoric is started by people living off the system and you know it. I think if Romney were elected you would be scared of getting your Government surplus cut off.

I think Romney should release his tax returns but so should Biden, Reid, Pelosi and the rest of the Senate and House.

He has probably moved a lot of money offshore so he doesn't have to pay any tax on the income. The outcome is simple, the more the wealthy get to avoid paying taxes, the more the poor and middle class have to make up those taxes so our government can still function. 2nd option is that Romney didn't leave bain in feb 1999, but in 2002, which means he skipped out on paying any taxes on the income from 1999-2002. This is just another wealthy guy thinking he can screw the country.

Romney is being foolish and it may cost him the election.

Unfortunately we have two guys who really dont know how to govern.

Obama at least knows how to get elected, but once in office is pretty clueless.

Romney should be able to win given the state of the economy, but he can't get out of his own way. He is likely to screw this up.

He's been running for President for 8 years now and it would seem to me someone should have told him he will need to put out more than 2 years of tax returns. When McCain was considering him for VP he gave him more years of return.

Whateven bad is in the return, people will imagine worse.

            Reply#63 - Wed Jul 18, 2012 11:25 AM EDT

What's funny is he's asking his VP candidates for more than a dozen years of taxes but he refuses to show more than one. What's he so afraid of in those tax returns of his?
