No one cares NBC. Let it go! Or at least start a similar investigation as to how Obama has amassed over $10 million in personal assets without having a real job in his life! Nah! Let it go!

Independent fact checkers at even the very liberal Waashington Post have already said that the Obama ads are rife with misstatements (translated "lies"). Let's talk about the economy and get off the personal attacks. Make Obama defend his record instead of helping him hide it behind a wall of lies.

Just read an explanation by the Washington Post Fact Checker. He states that the period from 2/99 until 2002 is a gray area for Mitt Romney, and there isn't enough evidence to state with certainty that Romney was actively working for Bain Capital during that time, even though he was compensated $100,000 for being an executive for the company. The writer never states that the Obama ads are misstatements, but suggests his conclusions may change if more facts come out. Right now there's not enough evidence to make a judgement of which position is correct. (Was Romney responsible for Bain's decisions from 2/99 until 2002? There's evidence for and against both conclusions.)

Why can't you people see through this?

Please, ask yourself, is it more important about what a Presidential candidate did in the past with his personal finances, or is it more important that your country is heading full speed ahead off a fiscal cliff in the very near future, and how we can come together and stop that?

(Obama will continue to personally attack because the spotlight cannot be put on his record.)

Please, ask yourself, is it more important about what a Presidential candidate did in the past with his personal finances,

Yes, yeah, yep, yuppers...

America is out of the recession, jobs have and still are being created and IF the DO NOTHING Republitard Congress would try and work to pass a Jobs bill instead of looking for Gays to Crucify then MAYBE, just MAYBE this country would even get back 5% unemployment sooner.

Mitt uses Bain as his credentials MAKING it relevant to his being President. And any LYING or COVERING UP will of course come back to haunt him.

Shame you can't see through that.

One could say Bain is the bane of Mitt's existence. :)

Yeah. Why doesn't Obama show his tax records, prove his degree from the University that he said he went to, and then come clean that he is not even a US citizen. He bought his certificate in Hawaii. The date it was issued proved that. Money can buy a lot of things when it comes to politics. Then Obama should start working on jobs. He had done nothing until Romney pushed him in the campaigns. He has been in office long enough to have fixed the problem. What makes you think the next 4 years are going to get anything done. People wake up.

What twelve years isn't enough when comparing to Mitt's one and a portion?

The President has a long list of documents that he never released but then the so-called "mainstream media" never properly vetted him either... ever. Perhaps the President should be asked to release something like his college records or thesis paper or the records regarding the purchase of his property in Chicago or one of the myriad white house documents that he refuses to release.

Tax returns? Really? A bit trivial in comparison, I'd say. It's laughable.

I don't know why this is a big deal to the libs. I mean Obama is a felon and they don't care about that. Obama admits to snorting cocaine and to smoking weed he also shared his bounty with his friends so that makes him a dealer.

Show me the tax returns! In particular from 1999-2002.

Romney's Bain Capital minions, who will never bite the hand that feeds them, admit that Romney was the owner, CEO and president of Bain until 2002. Well they have to because of the SEC documents. But they are sticking to their rehearsed stories that a "committee" ran Bain during this time. We are to believe that for almost three years there was no one in charge at Bain, no committee chairman, no right-hand man, no senior person, in fact it would seem the is no organization chart for Bain Capital at all.

And, while we have the SEC filings, where is the documentation to prove Romney was no longer involved with Bain in regard to anything. Romney repeatedly and adamantly uses the black-and-white term "anything" so where are the memos, Emails, letter of intent, something (and verified as not fake) to prove that Romney didn't have anything to do with Bain after 1999.

Then we still have to wonder why Romney made all the conflicting remarks that he made, such as "leave of absence" and returning to Massachusetts for business as well as pleasure, even a "board meeting." Did he say these things back then because his eligibility to run for governor was being contested?

So which was it, being in Salt Lake City "full-time" or a resident of Massachusetts eligible to run for governor? There are many reasons Romney won't release his tax returns, and this is just one. I don't want someone like that running the country. Heck, I don't even want to associate with people like him.

donna426 -- Yeh we've seen the rightwing Chain emails that harp on this crap. At least we know such things about the president's youth because he made it public a long time ago. Doing those things when you are young that don't affect other people's livelihood, BFD. At least the president is trustworthy.

Romney -- He's not in it for you.

Mark-390433 -- It's been explained a zillion times that tax returns are standard operating procedure to run for president. And especially when the candidate has so many questionable financial dealings, it is a no-brainer to ask for more transparency on this.

College records came up for the first time in regard to Dubya with a 'C' average, as well as his time in the National Guard -- which he shorted. But NEVER has anyone asked for a birth certificate until the first black candidate won the election. As for transcripts, since the president graduated magna cum laude and was president of the Harvard Law Review, we know this is also about his race like the Birther conspiracy theories. You people should be ashamed -- it's disgraceful.

The questions being asked about Romney are legitimate, especially since his eligibility to run for governor was contested, along with other matters such as the Bermuda story and transferring this into Ann's name only ONE day before he was sworn in as governor. This is all very fishy, documented, issues.

TruePatriot-445959 - Firstly, Governor Romney released his tax return for 2010 and will release his 2011 return as soon as it's available. That's more than enough... we all know that he's wealthy.

Secondly, I noticed you didn't address the President's continued refusals to comply with White House FOIA requests. Do you think they're pertinent?

By the way - you're playing the race card... really? It's getting a little old and desperate and only hurts race relations in this country. It's time to retire that one finally. It's thrown around so much that it doesn't even mean anything anymore.

That's more than enough... we all know that he's wealthy.

Not more than enough, just what's required. More than enough would be anything over three years my mathematically challenged friend.

Mitt's problem isn't even the almost two years he's provided, of which he's already made amends to. :) No, his problem is the trickling out of the 2011 return. Then to follow up his refusal to provide anything else. Even other Republicans think he's being stupid.

I think I know why he isn't releasing his tax returns. I think he claimed on his tax returns that he was still materially participating in Bain Capital for tax purposes. See the IRS publication below.

    Exhibit 4.1: Material Participation

ISSUE: Are losses limited, as taxpayer is not materially participating?

    OR

Is taxpayer materially participating in the activity; therefore, income is non-passive and cannot be used on FORM 8582 to offset passive losses?

ACTIVITY: If the return reflects several related businesses,
particularly for income issues, the examiner should consider whether
they should be grouped as a single activity under Reg. § 1.469-4. The
grouping rules are also a position the taxpayer may raise in loss
situations. The time for the taxpayer to group is when the first return
    with the entity was filed.

To determine material participation in an activity, the taxpayer must meet ONE of the following:

1.___— Does taxpayer and/or spouse work more than 500 hours a year in the business?

2.___— Does taxpayer do most of the work? Even if taxpayer
does not meet 500 hour test, but his participation is the only activity
in the business, he materially participates. Example: sole proprietor with no employees.

3.___— Does taxpayer work more than l00 hours and no one (including non-owners or employees) works more hours? Example: If owner puts in l75 hours a year and an employee works 190 hours a year, taxpayer would not meet material participation test.

4.___— Does taxpayer have several passive activities in which he participates between 100-500 hours each, and the total time is more than 500 hours?
The following activities should not be included in the above test:
rental activities: activities involving portfolio or investment income,
and activities in which the taxpayer does most of the work.

5.___— Did taxpayer materially participate in activity for any 5 out of l0 preceding years (need not be consecutive)? Example: taxpayer who retired and his children now run business, but he stills owns part of partnership.

6.___— Did taxpayer materially participate in a personal service activity for any 3 prior years
(need not be consecutive)? Personal service activity includes fields
of health, law, engineering, architecture, accounting, actuarial
    science, performing arts and consulting.

7.___— Do the facts and circumstances indicate taxpayer is materially participating? Test does not apply unless taxpayer worked more than 100 hours a year. Furthermore, it does not apply if:

    1. any person, other than the taxpayer, received compensation for managing the activity; or,
    2. if any person spent more hours than taxpayer managing the activity.

REMINDER: Limited partners under IRC § 469(h)(2) are generally
passive. The exceptions to the limited partner rule are tests 1, 5 and 6
above. If taxpayer holds both a general and limited partner interest,
he will have all seven tests available.

If the answer to any of the above questions is YES
the taxpayer meets the material participation standard. Losses or
income should not be reflected on Form 8582, and the taxpayer may
generally deduct in full the amount of the loss in the current year. If
the taxpayer materially participated, losses or income are reflected on
    the return as non-passive.

If the answer is NO to all seven tests, the material
participation standard is not met, and losses are passive. Taxpayer will
be allowed losses only to the extent of passive income.

CONCLUSION: Under IRC § 469, it has been determined that the taxpayer is /is not materially participating.

Reminder: If the taxpayer does not materially participate,
credits arising from the business are generally passive. In the absence
of passive income, a passive activity credit is nondeductible in the
    current year.

Examples: investment credit, rehabilitation credit, work
opportunity, disabled access, credit for employer social security and
medicare taxes on employee tips, etc. See Instructions for Form 8582-CR
    for a list.

ADJUSTMENT: Generally, the adjustment is the full amount of
the loss disallowed, unless the taxpayer has remaining passive income
which has not been used to trigger other passive losses. Passive income
is net income from a rental or from a business in which the taxpayer
does not materially participate. Losses belong on Form 8582 line 3b
(2b for years prior to 2002). As a practical matter, there is often no
need to compute Form 8582 if there is no remaining passive income.

Overlord..."Romney refuses to release his personal finances because he's hiding something...."

Same line with a few substitutions:

Obama refuses to release his college admission papers because he's hiding something....

But of course it's perfectly OK for Obama to hide information. Well, at least it is to hypocrites.

      #1.20 - Tue Jul 17, 2012 7:27 AM EDT

The "God of money" knows he lied and the tax return will prove it. If he is proud of what he did then he should share this information with America, since he wants to rule it. If he is ashamed of his actions then I understand why he wants to keep his returns secret.

        Jeff,

Right on. Past 1% ers who were branded "traitors to their class" usually became heros of sort to the masses. The big name that comes to mind is FDR when he went populist with New Deal programs like Social Security.

The big danger for Mitt and his tax records - should he release them - is once it is revealed how he and the rest of the 1% are legally allowed to game the tax system and pay squat compared to 99% of the rest of Americans, he, the unfair tax code and the crony politicians who have allowed this will be fully brought out into the light.

Unlike FDR, Mitt will be reviled as the scourge of the masses. Should the tax veil be lifted, even die-hard Middle Class Repubs and Tea Partiers will finally see how they have been used by the crony Wall Street & political elites.

Since when did it become wrong to be wealthy? Did it become wrong after John Kerry lost?

Instead of denigrating Romney, people should be trying to attain wealth themselves!

Why must the democrats take from the wealthy to give to the poor instead of showing the poor how to become wealthy themselves?

Obama has outsourced more jobs than Bain ever did and then Obama puts the head of GE, Jeffrey Immelt, who has sent more jobs to China than anyone, to head his Jobs Council.

Republicans have passed over 30 jobs proposals, BUT the Senate, under Harry Reid, will not even allow them up for debate!

          #2.3 - Mon Jul 16, 2012 2:43 PM EDT

          Bob,

Nobody is criticizing anybody for being wealthy. The issue is how the wealthy in conjunction with politicians via paid back campaign contribution favors have rigged the tax code with special perks that allow the very wealthy to scam on paying the tax rate assigned to their income.

Using a poker analogy...you're dealt your cards, you make your bets, you play your hand against your opponents as best you can and if you're lucky, read your competition right and the cards come your way, you win! Not a problem.

But if the rules are changed to where some players never have to ante, get extra cards, get extra draws and take the pot by claiming they've won without ever having to show cards when the hand is called...

My folks always taught me that's cheating!

The rich get to play by rules they make up - with the help of Congress - as the game goes along.

That's what has so many people in this land upset

There are no jobs due to the fact that Harry Reid wont allow the bills to come up because Obama wants to run against a "do nothing congress" as he calls it. The problem for him is that its the Senate blocking bills. Also, Obamacare has employers afraid to take on new people until they truly find out their cost, plus the possibility of tax increases.

Keir Weimer thinks that it is disgraceful what the Obama camp is perpetrating by misleading the public with slanderous ad spots peddling what has been proven to be false. This race for the next four years at the helm of the greatest nation on earth needs to be fought on the merits of each candidate's positions, philosophies and policies, not on these grounds that the President is laying.

Keir Weimer hopes the President and his myrmidons can apologize as they should, and move this debate to the substantive issues that will ultimately inform the electorate as to which man is the best choice moving forward.

Fact checkers - including the liberal Washington Post - have said that these ads by Obama are not true. Who cares - right? For liberals the ends justifies the means. If it takes lies to get Obama elected, then so be it. After all, that is how he was eleccted iin 2008!

Here is the final analysis, the only one that counts:

...the numbers for Bush's last three months. Between October and November, 597,000 jobs were lost; between November and December, 681,000 were lost; and between December and January, 741,000 were lost.

April 2012 marks the 26th straight month of gains in private-sector employment, for a total of 4.2 million private-sector jobs.

                      DJIA Dec 1, 2008 = 8149

                      DJIA July 13, 2012 = 12777

Dec 29, 2008 U.S. corporate earnings fell for a sixth-straight quarter, the longest streak in at least 20 years, as consumer spending on automobiles, homes and retailers collapsed.

May 11, 2012 Fortune magazine released its ranking of the 500 biggest US corporations Monday, which showed that they received a record-breaking $824 billion in combined profits in 2011, up 16 percent from 2010.

So I take it that you believe that losing 350,000 jobs per week is better than losing 741,000 per month.

                      Can you please explain??

I sure am glad for the distraction because thinking about the economy is depressing. I'm happy the President gets that. Maybe next he'll mandate cartoons on television instead of news coverage, at least to the extent that it hasn't already happened.

So, it was not "750,000 jobs lost a month" under Bush, it was only one month. Thanks for clearing that distortion up for us.

Obama is running 391,000 net jobs loss right, that is why we have %8.2 unemployment.

New Jobless claims mitigate the net job gains where Obama has a net loss.

Bush had a net gain of 1 million jobs gain, with over 5 Trillion added to the economy, after all was said and done.

Bill Clinton GDP growth after 8 years was $3.7 trillion, a balanced budget, and budget surpluses.
When we look at George W. Bush's 8 years as president, we must consider the following:
1.2000 dangling chad fiasco in Florida
                          2. The Dot Com bust
                          3. The Tech bubble and the NASDAQ collapse slide from 6000 points to 1200
                          4. $6 trillion lost from the 401Ks of Americans
                          5. The new millennium computer scare and fiasco
                          6. 911 and airline bankruptcies
                          7. The Afghanistan war and the Iraq war
                          8. The housing bubble and bust.
                          9. The stock market bust
                          10. The aging "Baby Boomer"
Under absurd economic conditions, the GDP under the George W. Bush administration grew by an insane $5.3 trillion.
Now let's look at Barack Obama!
Barack Obama has been in office for 39 months. During this time period, U.S. GDP growth has basically come to a standstill. The GDP was approximately $14.29 trillion when President Barack Obama took office. Currently the GDP is approximately $ 14.7 trillion.
The national debt, in this same time period has grown to over $14.7 trillion. The GDP may grow to $15 trillion for 2012. The national debt will increase to $16.7 trillion in early to mid-2013.
The economy will grow by approximately $700 billion over a full 4 year period; the national debt, on the other hand, will have grown by $6.4 trillion. This is an average of $1.6 trillion a year in deficit spending. Just Obama's deficits alone would have funded almost "5" full Bill Clinton budget years.
Jimmy Carter is an economic genius compared to Barack Obama! History will not be kind to Barack Obama and his inept handling of our economy and Federal deficits. It is going to be brutal.

Watermoon, since you value the truth so much, or so you say, then tell me which one is true--did Romney quit Bain in 1999 and lie on the documentation that showed him as CEO until 2002, or is he lying now?

Which is it? Take your choice.

Or maybe this is an example of the Heisenberg "uncertainty principle" and Romney was both the CEO and NOT the CEO at the same time. Where's Sheldon from "The Big Bang Theory" when we need him?

romney can't release his tax records-at the very least it will show a super rich guy who did anything to avoid paying taxes, at most it will show how and why he parks so much money offshore. either way it is another example how the very rich don't play by the same rules as regular people and get offended when someone dares to question them . if they don't want questions might i suggest they don't run for public office?

Fact checkers have simply stated that it cannot be proven that Romney was actively part of Bain Capital after 2/99. It's Ronmey's campaign that's claimed he had no part in the running of Bain, or any decisions made, after that 2/99 date. Romney did sign SEC forms that listed him as managing director, sole owner and stockholder, and CEO of Bain until 2002. He did receive over $100,000 compensation annually during that time period. Have the fact checkers stated that he was paid for doing nothing?

How does what a person does in privacy with another person who is also a US citizen pose a threat to national security. Please explain! Simple! None of our damn business when it's between consenting adults. Let's get back to Romney and his BIG lie. Either he LIED to the SEC, OR HE LIED to the American people about working for BAIN. Which one is correct? Isn't it fraud to submit paperwork that is essentially false based off the statements coming from the Romney Camp? Isn't this what we just heard about with the Libor and Barclays? People at the top trying to play by a different set of rules. Why isn't there just 1 set of rules for everyone is what I don't understand? Then this stuff woudn't even happen.

                                  The Perfect Quote

Some people have the vocabulary to sum up things in a way that you can quickly understand them. This quote came from the Czech Republic . Someone over there has it figured out. It was translated into English from an article in the Prague newspaper, Prager Zeitungon.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their President.”

This isn't an actual Czech editorial. The Prague Zeitung has no such quote in its archives, and various dates of publication, none of which are dates the weekly newspaper was published, have been reported by several Fox News personalities using this "quote". Glenn Beck was thought to be the first, and it's also suggested he or a staff member is the actual writer.

This is less about Bain 1999-2002 and more about the fact Mitt lies all the time.

The attacks by the Obama campaign are bringing up the fact that every other word out of Romney's mouth is a contradiction.

Water, as soon as Mittens turns over his college transcripts AND his birth certificate (the REAL one) and his tax returns, then Obama would supply his college grades.

                                        That's fair, isn't it?

And why did he change his name from Willard to Mittens?

Anyway, it is a no win for Romney. Of course no matter what is in other years, the libs will attack the returns showing he is wealthy, has investment, and he is just a bad guy for having money. I wish Romney would just ignore the diversions from the Dems and keep lobing his salvo's against Obama's record.

It looks to me that the most critical issue in the campaign is honesty.

Mitt Romney has repeatedly insisted he was not at Bain Capital after early 1999, yet SEC documents that he actually signed show he was still in charge until 2002.

It's as simple as this: Did Mitt Romney lie to the American people about when he left Bain's outsourcing and layoff juggernaut - or did he lie to the SEC when he said he was still Chairman and CEO of Bain for another three years?

Bottom line: He lied! Pick you answer to the question, but either way, the man is a liar!

He was not working at Bain, and everyone including newspapers, executives and the Olympic committee has said so. He was listed but not signed as CEO and was not working for Bain following the Olympics. The paper work for the filing was in error. PERIOD. Make of it what you want, but there are more important issues. For example he has experience and Obama does not. He is not responsible for putting this country in the toilet and that is the REAL issue.

Oh but he was, that's why it is so important. Mitt's lying and now his handlers are back-pedaling saying he didn't make it legal till later but actually left. To say he wasn't involved in Bain with all his interests with Bain is complete folly.

The guy had in the ball-park of $200 million in assets with Bain, his name are on the FCC filings for Bain and he uses Bain as his qualifications for running America.

Nope it's all valid grounds for criticism and scrutiny.

Supposedly this is a quote from an Apr 28, 2011 editorial - oops, make that 2010 - with the problem being it was first circulated in a December 2009 e-mail. A search by a Czech reader discovered that the Zeitung is a weekly newspaper, and didn't have an edition published in either 2010 or 2011. If you have a website directly linked to the Prager Zeitung, please advise. Otherwise, quit sending out this fiction that's proven to be really popular on right-wing website comment sections.

They can't stay on topic because he can't defend Mitt. :) It's their weakness which is why all they can do is move the goal post instead of sticking to the topic.

Patricia, College transcripts have nothing to do with willard's refusal to release his tax returns. Should you be quiet and do your own research you will find that fast and furious was on your boy george's watch. And quite frankly, I want to see YOUR college transcripts...i'm fairly sure that you want transparency from everyone, right?

His transcripts don't matter for a number of reasons. One being magna cum laude from Harvard should be enough.

Of course it's also not related to running for President unlike releasing your tax records is.

It might also be noted that not only is Mitt refusing to release more than two years he still hasn't even released the two years yet. He's waiting till the last minute to even show all his records. Something about having his minions time to finish cheat,,,err putting together his return. :)

Could someone offer me a plausible explanation of the following scenario:

In Jan. 2009 I take office as President of the U S A, our economy is devestated along with the world economy, our country is losing 750,000 jobs per month, the senate minority leader says his number one priority is to make me a one term president, when I ask the house of rep. majority leader to help me to restore our economy and employment opportunity, she says we will do our very best.

So I go to the house of rep. majority leader and the senate majority leader and ask for their assistance, they admit that the assistance they can offer is very limited since the republicans in the house of rep. refuse to represent their constituents and the senate republicans insist on a SUPER MAJORITY vote to pass anything.

My coleagues and I agree that the cost of health care is bankrupting our country and our citizens and we must find a feasible way to counter this financial nightmare. We struggle, spend all of our political capital, but pass the Affordable Care Act.

The Republicans make a full dishonest attack on ACA and take control of the majority in the house of reps. in 2010.

The senate minority leader is emboldended by the election and reafirms his commitment to make me a one term president, the new house majority leader says "HELL NO".

Working with the democrats in the senate and house of reps., without any assistance from the republicans, we save the economy from disintegration and reverse the employment opportunities from negative to positive. We save the entire aurtomotive industry and add 2 million employment opportunities, otherwise known as JOBS. We accomplish this feat without republican assistance in just 3.5 years.

Now after saving the economy and buoying up the market place with some opportunity, providing medical care for nearly all citizens, the republicans, who caused the disaster, say that I am not creating enough jobs, nor am I improving the economy, remember that the republicans are not assisting in this economic recovery at all.

It seems to me that the republicans are perpetuating a great big lie, a fairytale, that PURPOSELY IGNORES THE "FACT" THAT THEY CREATED THIS DISASTER AND HAVE STEADFASTLY REFUSED TO AID IN RESOLVING THEIR CREATED DISASTER, to say the least they are TWO FACED LIARS!

I don't understand all the righteous indignation from the baggers. Mitt "Rmoney" is a certified liar (out of his OWN mouth) and a known corporate raider and Vulture capitalist.

Now I'm sorry that you right wing nutjobs out there are upset and angry that on the SANITY side of the aisle we call this tool out for what he is, but you've got to remember...YOU PICKED THIS DOUCHE FOR A CANDIDATE, we didn't.

Normally a good liar can get a lot of stupid people to vote for him/her...whatever, but this tool isn't even a decent liar. He stumbles over his own lies, gets caught in them and invariably ends up looking like some kinda goof.

Well he's not a goof, he's a shill. He's a shill for the obscenely wealthy privileged few who want to just basically take everything and reduce the American middle class to a 3rd world poverty state. And as responsible citizens we simply can NOT allow that to happen.

You don't like President Obama...we GET that part, but what you're tying to replace him with is the worst possible scenario for the governance of our country. the GOP has to be defeated...SOUNDLY.

And this November, I'm betting they get their arses kicked worse than a narc at a bike rally.

I will have to admit that the HNIC is now a much better liar than he was in 2008, but oreo vacations and golf don't add up to much when the country is looking for experience.

I just love the way that all the Republicans on the talk shows want to control the conversation and keep changing the subject when the topic is Bain. They interupt and keep talking over anyone with a different viewpoint. I just wish some moderator would pull a Bill O'Reilly on them and tell them to "Shut UP!!!"

Romney gets red in the face when he talks about his years at Bain and seems like he is about to lose control. When Obama is questioned about Romney's attack regarding the economy, Obama just calmly says that Romney has a valid point.

So their demeanor is telling:someone who is about to fly off the handle or someone who is calm.

I had to laugh when Romney tried to justify his withholding of his tax returns by stating that John Kerry's wife didn't disclose hers.

When people find out how much money Romney actually has, their heads will explode, liberal or conservative, progressive or reactionary. How much he really made as an investor is the story.
