Four generations of Josephine "Ann" Harris' family, from left: Andrea Hubbard, Deanna Hubbard, Ann Harris, Wilma Parsons and Kamari Durant pose after President Barack Obama stopped at Ann's Place 24 Hour Restaurant in Akron on Friday.
ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE - The elderly owner of an Ohio restaurant where President Barack Obama ate breakfast on Friday died of natural causes just hours after meeting him.
Josephine "Ann" Harris, 70, owner of Ann's Place, where Obama was served eggs, bacon, toast and grits, died at a hospital in Akron, Ohio. The president called her daughter from Air Force One to express his condolences.
A hospital spokesman said Harris had complained of fatigue and a tingling feeling. White House press secretary Jay Carney said Harris apparently had not been well and was believed to have had a heart attack.
The Summit County medical examiner's office said Harris died of natural causes. Hospital spokesman Jim Gorsky said she died five hours after Obama's visit. "The president expressed his sorrow," Carney said aboard Air Force One at the end of a two-day campaign swing through the election battleground states of Ohio and Pennsylvania.
"Very sad event. He was very honored to meet her this morning and passed on his feelings that the whole family is in his thoughts and prayers," he said.
Harris's encounter with Obama took place outside her diner, where the president ordered two eggs, over medium, with bacon and wheat toast and accepted a waitress' offer of grits.
Harris, a great-grandmother, hugged Obama and posed with him for photographs, local media said.
"I'm sure this was her highlight," Harris' sister, Frankie Adkins of Tulsa, Oklahoma, told the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper.
Obama was finishing up a campaign bus tour during which he visited several restaurants to dine and talk with the locals.

... aaaaand jokes about the President killing a middle-class American woman in three... two... one...
He's killing us all, one at a time. She wouldn't have rec'd healthcare anyway...too old..never would've been approved!
Your post doesn't really deserve a response other but your like so many other bigots a mouth without a brain.
What is so bigoted about my comment MORON?
Sorry Noelle, didn't mean to step on your delicate little toes by commenting on a crappy HC plan and my opinion of Obama! Grow a pair baby!
Kingsnake , if you are not on Obama`s side ...You must be a bigot !
The Mitt Romney spin doctors who work at MSNBC must have paid well to throw this coincidence out. How many people were starved to death after Bain Capital took over their company?
This stuff is really gettin to be far fetched.
Hey Crawlin. How much do you really know about the HC plan? Would you feel that way if your options were to pay medical bills that your health insurance provider refuses and lose your home or die? Think real hard.
Kingsnake, smoke another rock!
Crawlin is obviously mistaking the before and after of Obamacare, see NOW she can't be denied healthcare, when her insurance could drop her before... its a simple mistake.
I am glad I don't have to meet the wipe. I am too old and I don't want to die. So this is what Obamacare does for the elderly. Thanks but no thanks. Keep your fu%&^(king healthcare.
@Crawlin Kingsnake - I didn't realize that Medicare was being disbanded as part of the ACA.
You really don't understand anything about the Health Care Law. It's an expansion of existing coverage. Not a reduction. In fact, the woman who passed away was ALREADY covered by Medicaid as she was far beyond 65 years of age anyways. People react so negatively to you because you don't understand what you're talking about. It's rather pathetic.
Crawlin. She was 70 already had medicare.
Crawlin Kingsnake
You are no Jim Morrison!
One less vote for the messiah! Oh wait, can dead people vote in Ohio? We better double check that roster!
Probably died of indigestion.....
Really Shane? It COST me my health insurance! After he signed it into law, my health care costs skyrocketed! I could not afford the increase in premiums, deductible from $500 to $2500 and the increase in copay, and prescriptions, or the denial of payments so I had to let it go. My house is more important!
Asking some people to "think hard" is like asking pigs to fly.
but according to the bishop Mitt she can be baptised and sway her over to his side!!
Obama has the power to cause the elderly to die by just meeting them? Maybe he should schedule a meeting with the members of Congress.
Hey Shane.....If you're over a certain age (I believe it's 75), there most certainly is a reduction. You've heard of the death panels? They're real.
U853, you stated "How much do you really know about the HC plan?"
My question is how much do YOU know about the plan? How much does ANYBODY know about obamacare. Nancy said we have to pass it to know whats in it. Well it passed. Whats in it?
Even obama kept saying "it's not a tax" yet the supreme court says it's a tax. obama doesn't even know whats in his plan.
The health system does need a lot of work but putting the government in charge of it is a really bad idea. If they can tax it, they control it, ergo they control you/us.
Obama should be rushed to the hospital and have his stomach pumped.
A breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast and grits will certainly do you in.
But I guess if you have health care coverage it doesn't really matter.
She'll probably be voting for Jug-head in November.
What a class act President. I'm glad he called the daughter to express his condolences. Others might have been "too busy" or "too important". Sorry for the families' loss.
My premiums were constantly going down every year. My deductibles were going down. My copays were almost non existence and there was no such thing as pre-existing conditions until George Bush took office in 2000. Once the corporate thieves realized they had one of their own in office and knew how to distract the nation and the world with their false wars, they just raised hell with everything and those premiums just started rising, the deductibles just started rising. Copays means I have to pay 90% of everything. A cough could be considered a pre-existing condition worthy of black balling a person for healthcare benefits up until last week.
But all in all, I've paid every cent they asked and was smart enough to never use the benefits period thus not giving them a chance to black ball me and my family. I could have chosen the root the majority of the conservative party took and dropped my insurance and threw it onto the back of the middle class like the comservatives did but I just couldn't turn my back on my family and all the needy comservatives that are laying back and bleeding the system. Now even they will have to pay their fair share.
@ Worm meat
The tax again, do you even understand what that mean?
Ask people who have Romneycare, most of them like it. 99% of people under Romneycare never pay that tax because they really like the healthcare. Obamacare is an extension of Romneycare.
It seems you are clueless here. It also worth mention that Obamacare force insurance companies to actually pay 80 cents instead of current 50 cents per premium dollar. Meaning more money into people helping people and less money for CEOs.
What else do you have? A clueless person who barely understand anything, it shows from the moment you open your mouth.
Mike-424215, you don't really expect anyone to buy that nonsense do you? Before Jug-head was " elected ", I was able to make it through the month on my retirement check with careful spending with a little left over. Now, I can nearly make it three weeks. And things are supposed to be getting better?
Did he pay?
FedupwithFed,
Health care costs have been rising since 2000. That is why the HCA was created, to stop the rapid rise in costs for the insured. You are lying if you are saying they only started going up after the health care act was signed. Now they must justify rate increases which in my case has essentially frozen my insurance costs. So try again, lying will get you nowhere here.
Michael Gibson-758864
Before Mr. Obama was elected you were losing your ass just like everyone else was period. You can thank the oil companies for anything else you are paying excess for. That isn't a President thing, it's a congress sitting on their butts doing nothing but pandering to these corporations that is causing the fall of the nation all and in itself and until both parties start working together and the corporate world is put in it's place or kicked the hell out and let new business grow and expand, things will not get any better.
You're right. No private insurance company would've touched her. If she had private insurance coverage, the company would've denied it after taking tens-of-thousands of dollars in profits for 1% CEO's from her.
Death panels? They're here. They've been here for a long time. They're called private, profit-making, multi-billion-dollar insurance corporations. Only a MORON wouldn't realize that.
Mike-424215, that is a lie. If you're saying you know that for a fact, you're a liar. If you're just supposing it, you're criminally misinformed.
RIP Ann, I used to think this was where all the smart people gathered but that was Years ago, now it's mostly Idiots, that's why I don't see the smart posters anymore, what a shame.
How much of your "retirement check" comes from Social Security? You know, that socialist program where we taxpayers have our money taken away to pay your bills? Don't go saying you "paid into it" and now you "are entitled to get it back." What you paid in vanished years, if not decades, ago. We're paying your bills now. And if we aren't getting you enough money to make it through four weeks, that's your problem. Maybe you should've done more in the private market to pay your bills. Things are worse for you? Who cares. You made your bed, now you lie in it. Make your choice for one week where you have to decide if you want food, a roof over your head, your utilities kept on, or your medications. We socialists owe you nothing. Let the private corporatist interests bail you out.
Her breath was taken away due to Obama's good looks and meat package.

She couldn't handle it.
lol
And who decided to raise your health care costs? Why, it was your private insurance corporation! Surprise, surprise! So why are you blaming President Obama? Why aren't you blaming the corporation from which you willing bought a policy? Haven't you gotten it yet? Your private insurance company didn't care about you. It cares only about making money, money, money. As one insurance corporative representative willingly admitted on a talk show (and I'll give him kudos for saying it), insurance companies are not in the business of helping people - they are in the business of making money. Corporations today make more and more and more money for a miniscule number of CEO's, board members and stockholders by charging the highest prices possible and providing the cr*ppiest service or product possible. That's how it works now. You were just a way to make money for them and they didn't care if you were sick. You made the choice to forsake someone else paying to keep you healthy to keep your house. Well, welcome to the "new" capitalist system which is actually corporatism. You get what you pay for, and now you don't get what you pay for. If you don't like it, then quit your job, go back to school, and get a degree so you can become an insurance corporation executive. It's still a free country. For now.
I've read some silly things before but you all conversations is a waste of God given breath. My condolences
I don't know about that. Maybe it's the other way around. Some of the pearls of wisdom from these nut jobs are unbelievable. I'm sure someone died somewhere shortly after Willard was in town, but the difference is that it doesn't make the headlines.
Because it's bullsh!t and never happened.
Jerry-1903677, do you know the difference between the words, retirement check and social security? Maybe someone can explain it to you.
Oh Great- The President has been blamed for everything from someone running out of toilet paper and now to being the cause of someones death simply by eating in her restaurant.
Get real people. If he had that much magic he would wave his wand and make Rummy go away.
Of course in the end he won't have to anyway. Get rid of all those ignorant Repelicans in congress and watch him become one of the best presidents in hiostory.
Well this IS a first! Something bad happened and Mr. Obama didn't blame Mr. Bush. Except we really don't know what was said in the phone call!
sorry but i think your full of @!$%#..just like alll RP so you take away this bill. what are you dumb asses going to replace it with. o and all so dumb ass this bill was molded after romantors Massachusetts law . dumb ass retards
TFO-killswitch, don't you understand the difference between a state doing somethig and the federal government doing it? I pity you.
Okay, I didn't expect to go this way in this conversation, but...
1. There are no things called "Death Panels" in Obamacare. It is called the IPAB, and it will have the ability to determine if you get care based upon the efficacy of the procedure involved relative to your actuarial situation.
2. Insurance costs didn't begin to rise in 2000, though I suppose you actually meant 2001 as that was when Bush became president. Insurance costs began rising when insurance was created. And they really began to take of in 1942. I can explain if you want.
3. Millions of people will lose their insurance BECAUSE of Obamacare. Estimates are that at least the same number who will be able to get insurance will also lose their own, though they will be able to then go to the exchanges and buy something for greater cost to them.
4. Obamacare raises taxes in at least 21 different ways, and will affect each person who earns money in the USA. That means the poor, if they earn money, will pay more. Which isn't a bad thing, per se.
5. Whether it's a tax or not is irrelevant. Article One doesn't allow the feds to control your health care. Justice Roberts erred, imo. Any claim that Congress can employ a tax to make legal what is otherwise illegal misses every legal canon one can imagine.
6. Any politician would call with condolences if they knew what happened, and in our world every politician would have known what happened. We really ought to stop trying to put on pedestals our politicians.
7. Enjoy your weekend. Obamacare is not yet the fully implemented law our epically inept president wants.
Jerry, are you really that dense that I need to explain it to you. Our health care costs are soaring because SOME people don’t want to pay for health insurance which causes the rest of us to pay for them thru rising medical costs which is turned over to the insurance companies. The negligent ones prefer to spend their money on “essentials” like plasma TVs, iphones, tattoos, good teeth, alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, junk food…that you and I also pay for with our taxes in the form of FOOD STAMPS!
What ever happened to PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY? If everyone would pay their fair share, the rest of us wouldn’t have to take care of the IRRESPONSIBLE! Maybe I would like to splurge on items but I know that I cant because I have bills to pay. There comes a time for everyone to grow up and be responsible, that’s not being selfish, that’s called self esteem! Something our parents taught us and what they USED to teach in public school! You don’t get self esteem from handouts. You don’t get a sense of pride or accomplishment from being dependent on someone.
I’m not blaming the insurance companies because people feel that they can go to the ER for free. Somebody has to pay for it. But they don’t care as long as they keep living the way they want to live while the rest of us sacrifice so they can. Enough already! I’m blaming Obama for continuing and worsening people with entitlements and government dependency.
Of course insurance companies are in business to make money, ALL businesses are. If you owned a company, would you work every day to LOSE money? NO! If corporations didn’t make money we all wouldn’t have jobs, we wouldn’t have products and services to buy. Stockholders take risks investing their money. What RISK are you taking? You sound like a whiney ass punk who is on the receiving end of everything the rest of us work for! GROW UP!
Another reason our health care costs are soaring is because people think they can win the lottery by hiring sleazy attorneys to sue the doctors and hospitals those costs are also passed on to the insurance companies and higher health care costs. God forbid anyone should actually WORK for a living!
Of course most of those sleazy attorneys are now members of our congress so we are still getting screwed.
Some snide and a few funny comments here.
It was probably a bit stressful on the old broad, RIP.
Like your work Jerry!
Love your avatar Tony!

“And
who decided to raise your health care costs? Why, it was your private insurance
corporation! Surprise, surprise”!
So
when your ilk cries for free education, you will remember that it's not the government,
or some oil company or republican Congress that is causing the rise in
education costs. Its teachers unions and the University THEMSELVES causing
these costs; most of these campuses are run by as well as the students are
being taught by progressives socialist wannabes. So I expect you to turn your
back anytime the occupy Wall-Streeters who protest over having to pay back
student loans are holding up signs and breaking store windows. Do you have the
guts for that?
Oh
by the way, Obama care passing is causing car insurance to go up as well just
due to the regulations that are being put in place, your premiums there will
change, as well as your healthcare insurance. (“Oh I am a Liberal… I get mine
thru a company, I don't have to worry about how much the company pays…blah
blah..”)
I
have worked in medical billing, I know what Medicare, the V.A., and Medicaid
reimbursements pay back from the government, and even you couldn’t live off of just those payments
if you had to be paid back under them...why don’t you research the fees and
what they are paying for.. it’s online..just pick any state.
Here
is my last question posed to you.. Oblowmecare is supposed to curb medical cost
(which is a lie the CBO says it will add) and you are for Dr's getting their
payments cut... yet I do not see you guys standing up for Tort reform or
curbing lawyers rates (200 dollars for a 30 min phone call?) Why do you think
that your messiah won’t do tort reform? Could it be because he isa lawyer, as
well as most of democrat senators and congressmen are lawyers as well?
If
they really wanted to help "us poor unfortunates" why aren’t they
trying to do tort reform at the same time, why are they not trying to take
control over education costs with universities? If you believe Dr's charge so
much, do you think the loans they had to accrue for going to med school have
anything to do with their fees??
Tell
you what… you ponder and philosophize about that, think with your heart about
it and not your head and come back to us with a good answer.
My
answer to you is…. if he doesn't try to have the government take over those
other industries I mentioned as well as at the same time as Oblowmecare, he
doesn't care about you at all, and this is all a power grab for something else
later..
You
know it is and it is setting a precedence the gov never had before
well, it was probably a stroke/heart attack that did her in, my condolences to the family...
Now, will you people SHUT UP ABOUT POLITICS FOR ONE ARTICLE!!!
@Mike-424215- You are a colossal liar. If your premiums went up it was after Obamacare not before unless you had one of the cheap cut rate insurers.
This is an omen.....you liberals vote for this Communist/Marxist in November will be getting what you deserve. But unfortunately you dopes will be taking down the rest of us who know what a joke of a president this clown is.
Medical premiums have gone up since this jerk bought off dopes like himself to pass this Obamascare. Piglosi and demented Reid...... I pay the bills and medical premiums have gone up every year since those power hungry rich elites voted it in. It's all about them, not about us.
I've worked my whole life. I always made sure my job provided me with the option to buy health insurance. My family has always been covered by health insurance. Since Obummer Care passed I now pay over $700 per month for my wife and I to be covered by insurance. (by the way if you get insurance through your employer there is no pre existing clause) My co pay is now $2000 per person before the insurance company pays anything. This just happened 2 years ago. I have documentation to prove it. The insurance company's worried that Obummer care is going to wipe them out. This health care is going to ruin the economy more than anything you can blame Bush for. No I am not a Republican I am a hard working American. I don't want to live in a Socialist Government controlled country. I want my country back. BTW Prayers for the family that lost Ann.
Before I say anything else, I want to give my condolences to the family. Perhaps the excitement of having the President in her restaurant and the miserable weather may have accelerated her passing. RIP
Now, I've also worked for over 40 years, and saw my 401K go down the tubes in 2000 (before GW) and then again in 2008 (under GW). So now I am more dependent upon Social Security that I had planned to be. But, that's what happens in life, things happen over which one has no direct control. However, this year my deductible (I'm not 65 yet) was rolled in to my out of pocket, and I have $350 more in my pocket than last year. This is due to ACA.
I just would like to comment that when I was brought up, my parents taught me to respect the office of the presidency, even if I neither voted for nor liked the occupant. It isn't an easy job.
8. If you are poor or lose insurance, you will receive subsidies to help pay for the insurance, so unless the insurance company tries to screw you over by raising prices, you won't be paying more.
9. The insurance company is required to pay 80-85% on YOUR healthcare, so if it overcharges you, you receive a refund.
10. Preventative care will be covered.
11. We as taxpayers are paying for the uninsured anyway. With preventative care, the people who suffer till they go to emergency rooms will be able to get healthcare immediately, thereby reducing healthcare total costs for everyone.
12. People who are ill aren't very productive. If they are poor, we are paying for their foodstamps. Cure then and put them back to work immediately and we will have fewer people living on the public dole.
13. Healthy people are more productive. Productive people make more money. Since they make more money tax receipts go up, reducing the average burden on the average taxpayer.
14. If fewer doctors have to work in emergency rooms, we can eventually re-distribute resources so our doctors and nurses are less over-worked.
15. Since healthcare is covered, fewer bankruptcies; over half the million bankruptcies filed per year in courts are due to medical reasons. Instead of spending all the time in court after being ill, people get back to work. Lawyers make less money and people spend more time working. More tax receipt, greater GDP.
15. The best investment a government can make is in the health of its citizens. Our 'inept' President doesn't seem all that inept now, does he? Have a nice weekend.
Dry Up Byron, there is no such thing as a 'free lunch' though you obviously get one from the St. Vinnies food line every day.
I exected a bunch of jackass cmments from those rightwingers who take every opportunity to bash Obama.
Of course you did not fail. Grow up.
Best to this womans family who obviousy worked hard to build a business; and on the loss of their matriarch.
I can barely stand to read the idiotic and ignorant comments on newsvine/msnbc anymore. "Mitt Romney Spin doctors that work at MSNBC"? are you serious?! "Conservatives that don't have insurance and just lay back and live off the government"? Really? You people are so freakin stupid it isn't funny anymore. The worst part is that your ignorant asses VOTE. You have your reality TV SHOWS confused with ACTUAL REALITY and you are beyond dangerous to this nation. It is because of morons like you that are country is dying and collapsing. If Odumbass whens another term, this country is ruined. you people are communists, socialists and anti-capitalists. AMERICA IS A REPUBLIC! NOT A DEMOCRACY! America's economy USED to be based on the Capitalist ideology and a FREE market. That all started going downhill when Carter passed the "fair housing act" and THAT was the rock that started the snowball! Every President SINCE has screwed up and made it worse, but NOTHING on the level that Odumbass has! Forcing people to buy a particular service, banning items because you want the pee-ons to buy what YOU want them to buy, giving tax payer money to failing private companies and prohibiting the natural order of success to the more fit and profitable organizations IS NOT CAPITALISM! Romney is going to be a HORRIBLE President if he wins, BUT AT LEAST HE WONT DESTROY OUR COUNTRY!
AlienMartian
Hang on i will beat my head against a brick wall for 24 hours to dumb my response comment down to? an acceptable level for you to comprehend ......Ok ...Ready...EERHH ...''Your a dumbass . the @!$%#ing country was tanking during bush you ass monky.he had 8 years to put us in this hole and you expect a new presadent to turn this around in 4 years???
get your head out of your ass
AlienMartian, you must have just landed on this planet only 4 yrs. ago while picking up signals from Fox for several prior years.
This Democratic Republic was started 236 years ago. One of our most famous and valued founding fathers started the first public library system and was appointed Postmaster General of the United States Post office. Two of those dreaded socialist programs. The first U.S. dam was built in 1820 by the Army Corps of Engineers. Dam those dirty socialists.
Abraham Lincoln attended a public school. Another dreaded socialist program. Our 34th President, a very popular Republican President, taxed the hell out of us as he continued the New Deal Agencies, expanded Social Security and launched the Interstate Highway System. He warned us of the very serious dangers presented by the capitalist military industrial complex. He must have been one of Joe McCarthy's secret commies.
I feel bad that the idiots at Fox convinced you we were all capitalist purists that hate all of our social advances during the last 236 years. I'm sorry that your Martian government deported you because you became a capitalist revolutionary. I hope they at least provided public transportation for your long journey. Seems a shame that you would have to walk this far. An even greater shame when you have to walk all the way back.
I like the not so smart freeloaders that tell me my premiums never went up until after ACA bill was passed. More than likely they are the freeloaders that have never actually paid their own way so have no clue to the fact these premiums have been on the rise for many, many years with the deductibles outgrowing even the premium hikes and the addition of pre existing conditions being the remedy the insurers use to disqualify people from being able to afford or even obtain insurance altogether. Evidently these same not so smart people also never read that it was because of these insurers raping their members with sky rocketing premiums with sky rocketing deductibles as well as their practice of using pre existing conditions as a reason to even deny coverage is exactly why the ACA bill happened to begin with.
LOL any of you dumbasses ever stop to think your so called insurance so called SKYROCKETED the moment the ACA was passed because your insurance companies PANICKED and tried to jack up prices for no damn reason???? EVer wonder why MILLIONS of ppl are getting REFUND CHECKS?????
LOL@ ppl LOSING healthcare because of ACA.... youll only lose your HC if you live in retarded state that is trying to BLOCK the ACA.... because if you cant AFFORD it, there will be ways for you to GET IT!!!
Shane Gentry Robb.......You have confused Medicaide with Medicare. They are quite different programs. Medicare is healthcare for those over 65 who have PAID premiums all their lives out of every paycheck. Medicaide is taxpayer funded healthcare with no deductibles, co pays, or premiums paid. The recipients must meet certain income and asset requirements. Medicaide is healthcare for the poor, Medicare is healthcare for elderly who paid into the program and continue to pay premiums for doctor and prescription drug coverage.
@AlienMartian
You call everyone stupid and then write this???
"If Odumbass whens another term, this country is ruined. you people are communists, socialists and anti-capitalists."
OK Who is Odumbass? I guess you think you sound super intelligent making up names for the President. (Names that my 3 year old could come up with by the way. )
"If Obama (fixed it for you) whens another term" LOL That should be "WINS not "whens" LOL Man you are smart! LOL and his name is Obama.
How does Obama winning make us all " communists, socialists and anti-capitalists." for someone that doesn't even know the difference between "Whens" and Wins" I doubt you even have a clue as to just what those other types of Government really are.
a family tragedy, a coincidence
RIP
And they like sheep remained silent, as they were led away to be slaughtered.
And yes, the dead can vote if you live in the Chicago area and you vote on the Democrat ticket.
@BP-2252891,
You hit the nail right on the head........I wanted to comment on AlienMartian also but you said it best. I think people like him get so wrapped up into their own hatred and ignorance that they don't take time to realize who the real fool is. LOL,ROTFLOL!!! SMH!
Just before Bush came to Ofice I had 25$ copays and a $2,500 deductible and no Rx coverage ... by 2006 I had $0 copay and a $250 deductible and full Rx coveage.
The cost for healthcare is going up twice as fast under Obama .... there is one area of improvement it's easier to get Crack Cocain .... right on rockin dog that's my man always lookin out for the little people .... please pass the pipe ...
This is about what I'd expect from this president.
Do you guys honestly think Obamacare will improve healthcare? The fact is it will increase costs, decrease quality, and increase wait times. Hundreds of thousands of doctors are going to retire with no one to fill their place. In the UK they practice euthanasia, with the NHS killing off 130,000 elderly patients a year. #ixzz1yK7gbr7D The fact is Sarah Palin was correct when she warned about death panels. The only way to increase the number of people served while keeping costs contained is too ration care. Since the elderly account for the majority of health care spending in the US, and most of that money being spent in the last few months of their lives what do you think will happen when the US needs to control costs? Where will they start rationing care first? BO care will be a disaster for America and needs to be repealed.
My healthcare premiums went up after the ACA was signed into law but because of reasons Hayabusa stated. My healthcare company wanted to get as much money as they could before they became regulated.
What's even funnier about the anit-President Obama crowd is that it doesn't really matter who is in office. Romney, Obama, Palin, Bush, me, whomever nothing is going to be fixed or turned in the right direction until there is another revolution. The teaparty tried but we need free thinkers, not extremist agenda types.
How the hell can 50 people give or take write our Constitution and the 6-700 people in control screw it up so badly? Last I checked they weren't all democrats either. They are all just as bad as each other. Some are worse, but they all suck.
Lots of comments restored, but not these:
Noelle Kearney, rocky-road95875, AlienMartian, you're each suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.
Crawlin Kingsnake, TFO-killswitch, you're each suspended for a week for violating #1 of the Code of Honor repeatedly.
Read it, folks:
My favorite boss used to say,"Hey Ace, I think most of the world has gone nuts except you and me. Lately, I've been worried about you". It was a joke.
I think this describes many who believe their health insurance premiums increased because of the ACA. My premiums doubled, tripled and quadrupled long before President Obama was elected or passed ACA. I know that yours did as well. I knew without a doubt that the insurance industry would work triple time to increase their rates before ACA came into full effect.
Anybody ever hear of, "Making hay while the sun shines"? Who, in his right mind, would have expected any less from such a ruthless industry? Who, in his right mind, could imagine the much higher rates, without the threat of ACA, that they would have been imposed on a helpless populace? C'mon folks, they are slowly being reigned in and put up their best fight.
Many people will receive rebate checks this summer thanks to ACA. Many more have been able to place their uninsured adult children on their policies until age 26. This is just the beginning. ACA is the gift that keeps on giving. Republican promises of cooperation proved to be detrimental to the act as they shamelessly reneged on those promises. This is only the beginning with lots of room for improvement once Republican obstructionism is removed.
The rest of the civilized world's citizens would be flooding this country if national healthcare proved to be the disaster painted by greedy opponents. Instead, we see only the wealthiest foreigners seeking the best care money can buy as millions of Americans die for lack of healthcare everyday. Most British and Canadian citizens fear visiting the states lest they become ill or injured during their visit and be left to die.
As the last civilized nation to embrace universal healthcare, we have the golden opportunity of taking the best such a system has to offer and avoid the pitfalls of much earlier attempts. Only fools would refuse such an opportunity and insist on a much inferior system that leaves a third of our citizens to die for lack of healthcare.
Spending billions for defense is useless without healthy soldiers to man that defense. Spending billions on medical research that only benefits the top 10% is useless without healthy Americans to continue that research. Each and every young person or child that dies for lack of healthcare greatly decreases the pool of genius of the American people that will continue to lead the world in technological and scientific advances.
We are effectively killing the goose that laid the golden egg. Our economic woes today demonstrate the many wrong turns we have taken during the last few decades. It doesn't have to be this way. Turn this thing around by putting the American people back to work. We can then restore the American dream and once again lead the free world in all endeavors.
American exceptionalism was never our form of government, wealth or military strength. It has always been the spirit of common hard working American people constantly striving for a better life.
What a cheezy title for a story. To try and insinuate that Obama killed her is just wrong. She was old, and her ticker couldn't handle a sexy and handsome man that finally entered her old grungy restaurant.
Dearest Tyler, I realize you probably have a real job and therefore don't have a great deal of time to "police" the Vine but would you consider suspensions for those without a clue as to proper English?
Perhaps just those referring to the intelligence of others while butchering the sentence? ;-}
If you are looking for a perfect world, then might I suggest you find one out in the galaxy somewhere. You're not going to find perfection on the Vine or on any other site. Maybe you should consider creating a board here on the Vine and invite all the perfect spelling and grammar people to it.
This is the internet and the Vine. some people might have seeing problems, aren't the best spellers, and as in my case, I have no fingers to type with, so if my typing and posts bothers you, then so be it.
I will continue posting as such, and you can continue complaining as well, but before you continue bashing people with bad grammar, you might want to see the fun and humor in them as sometimes and a lot of times I will replace certain letters with d's, z's, and such.
I like the way the people on the Vine here post. I don't care if they misspell or their grammar is bad. They are people and they do get there messages across loud and clear.
:)
@Rich-with-the-point-by-point:
Putting lies and half-truths after numbers and with appropriate spacing does not make them any less lies;
The IPAB does NOT DECIDE, it recommends proceedures that have the highest success rates FIRST but prohibits none. The Supreme Court would NEVER permit such exclusions, they are not Constitutional.
NO ONE will lose their insurance unless the INSURANCE COMPANY decides to cut them which they already are/are going to do anyway. That has NOTHING to do with "Obamacare", it has to do with insurance companies being run by crooks who want to continue getting buckets of cash for NOTHING. You are probably one of said criminals.
Justice Roberts SETS PRECEDENT and determines how laws are prosecuted, NOT YOU. That is NOT "imo" as you weaslingly tried to slip thru, it's In (MY/YOUR) fact. So, YOU need to CHANGE your OPINION to match REALITY.
The rest of your post is blather.
Any more BS for us?
Well, you did a fine job pecking that one in with a pencil in your mouth so you should be beaming with pride.
Perhaps it was to, two, too much of a strain to peck in the posts I was actually referring to, two. too?
Both of those scholars your, you're defending were referencing the lack of intelligence of the other in violation of the C of H and we're, were awarded suspensions.
I'm always a bit embarrassed at the dumbing down of my fellow Merkans:-) Perhaps another point of pride for, fore, four you? Don't strain yourself on my behalf...
To Joanna (#1.14), or John Lee Hooker!
I guess Chris Matthews had a near death experience. Close call?
yes, sadly so. This woman was probably pushing herself to meet an American President. My condolances to her family
Serving up her beloved Pomeranian was too much.
What an AWESOME way to go out! Mitch McConnell should be so lucky!!
One less vote for the Obamanation.
won't make a difference, martha. The election won't even be close. Obama for 4 more. Get used to it.
Whoever wrote this article needs to off themselves. This is an embarrassment to journalism (as if it isn't already embarrassing enough, at the moment).
Martha-2024651
What could the mentality of a person be to write something like that? Do you have any conscious at all? An elderly woman died, her family is grieving, it was probably the best day of her life to see and interact personally with the President of the United States of America (regardless of party politics, we are all supposed to be Americans) and you write something so insensitive without regard for a families grief or the value of the woman's life. How would you like it if someone printed on a public forum something like that about your aged Mother who suffered a heart attack and died. Your coment was not cute or funny, just showed a complete lack of respect for a little old woman.
tonybeeerm I am getting used to Obama - No jobs, ho health insurance, no prospects. Another 4 years will definitely be familiar!
My condolences to the family! I am sorry for their loss. But you know, the guy sorta has that effect on a lot of people, they just want to curl up and expire at the thought of his being around another 4 years. Before someone jumps in to tell me to get used to it, or get over myself, I am already there, no money, no job, nothing to eat, no prospects. I am really over it.
Liaa......Did you have a job, career, money, and prospects while Wall Street and Banks were robbing the American Public blind during the 8 yrs of the Bush Administration with deregulation and two wars put on the backs of hard working Americans while the wealthy paid less taxes than you? Maybe you want to "curl up and expire" but I am certain that was the last thing on this little old woman's mind this morning, or her family. Actually if they read your insensitive comment, they would probably had preferred it was you instead of their loved one....
For those of you who are whining about Obama and you not having a job. If the republicans had been in charge, we'd be in the 2nd Great Depression with unemployment much much higher than it is now. Right now the economy is trying to rebuild itself on much firmer grounds than the fake economy that collapsed. It takes TIME.
I'm sorry you do not have jobs but is it the government's fault. How much education do you have? Those with Bachelor degrees and higher have unemployment less than 5%. Have you went back to school to be retrained in nursing, pharmacy technicians or other specialties in high demand? Or do you think a factory job where you push a button all day and get $40 an hour is going to fall in your lap?
Tony Beeerm
If Obama gets re-elected for 4 more years there will be a civil war. Get use to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We Will be Ready For People Like U......................Idiot!
One more reason for a national health care plan. My condolences.
Hi GBGentlema,
There is one thing I think you and I can agree on: That economy, the one which collapsed, was built on a bad foundation, really it was all a bubble. But you lose me when you say that Mr. Obama is trying to get things on terra firma. The GM bailout? Not terra firma. HARP, and the other feeble attempts to prop up the RE market? Not terra firma. Eliminating in the ACA the only two public purposes for insurance companies (risk assessment and risk management) and then imposing upon them the duty to simply administer the federal code? Not terra firma.
Maybe we will forever disagree about what kind of economic foundation we should build our economy on, but borrowing trillions (Bush did this too but not to the degree Mr. Obama has) from our unborn heirs in order to contonue to live beyond our means today just doesn't cut it. Vote for Mr. Obama if you like, but don't, please, pretend for a moment that he is doing anything to get our economy onto firmer footings.
As far as when the bubble that popped began? Well it was years before Bush came to the WH. Before Clinton. Before HW. Before Reagan. It goes back MANY decades. Every good intention, in terms of federal policy, helped to inflate the bubble just a little more. It grew so slowly that few people recognized the danger of it. It's not evidence we need MORE federal interaction with the economy, it's evidence we need less. That bubble would not have occurred without federal incentives, but even if it had it would've popped long ago had the private economy been able to properly assess risk.
GBGentlema, I have a job however just to comment on your unthoughtful comment regarding those with Bachelor's degrees??NOT everyone can or is able to go to college or at least go long enough to obtain a Bachelor degree, that takes time and A LOT of money some of which not all have the means of getting. There are many people out there who would LOVE the opportunity to go to college but don't have enough money OR some high school graduates can't go because their parent's make just beyond the amount for student grants and let me tell you that doesn't generally mean that much (it is usually a middle class income family who is living modestly). Yet, if I were in welfare or an immigrant college is free or in some states if you are a resident you can go to an "instate" college for free or at least very low tuition. However in Vermont that is NOT the case. So before you start "slamming" those who do not have a degree, you may want to realize other situations first. On the other hand, my son has an Associates Degree in business management and he STILL is trying to find a full time job, meanwhile he works part-time as a delivery driver at a local Domino's just so he can pay his bills OH AND lets not forget HIS STUDENT LOANS THAT ARE NOW DUE!!
For the rest of the comments, I agree this has nothing to do with Obama. I too do not care for the man but this has nothing to do with what he has or has not done for our country. This poor elderly woman as passed away and the negative comments that I have read regarding this article are disturbing. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family. I am happy that this woman was able to leave this world happy and knowing that the last thing she remembered was a happy joyous time in her life (regardless of the way everyone else thinks or feels)!
What a bunch of horse's backsides. Forget politics, and take the story for what it was. Meeting President Obama was something that most of us will never do. In fact, in my 56 years I haven't met any President of the United States. Maybe that was something good for her, and maybe it wasn't. But when Obama heard that she had passed away, he took the time to offer his condolences. That's not a reason to vote for him, or an excuse to attack him. But people trying to make political hay out of something like this tells me that the ones trying to do it are sorry Americans At best. I'm sorry for this familly's loss. And I'm also sorry that some people will stoop to any low in our nations politics.
I'll be sure not to ever eat there.
Some of you think Obama hasn't kept his promises or done anything. How can he sign bills into law (for the things he promised) when Republicans refused to let many bills even be discussed? Unless the bills are put on his desk, he can't sign them. I can't even watch live sessions of the House and Senate on C-Span anymore. The Republicans stop everything, even though our people need the jobs, energy, and transportation bills. They only care about winning over Obama. They are disgusting.
No wonder Congress has only a 14% approval rating.
Many of those on the right scream about MSN being so liberal but in reality they just create controversial articles to draw people to their site. Those on the right are just so much easier. Who else but teabaggers would think they scored some kind of triumph because an old lady who owned a restaurant died the same day Obama ate there.
It is with a clear understanding that there is an active tealiban with like minds like this antiamerican that made me change my mind about being offended by the newest NDAA bill that was passed and signed into law by both parties. Even the true republicans realize these terrorists are a very real threat in this country and that although they are using the liberals as their reason for treason and wanting to start another civil war, the republicans also realize these homegrown terrorists, just like the brotherhood in Libya and Egypt, would also target the real republicans as well.
Yeah, ya know, I really really am NOT a fan of Obama, but I'm fairly certain this wasn't his fault. I'm sorry the family had to go from the excitement of meeting the POTUS to this sad event.
In the more complete Akron Beacon Journal article, it stated that the woman had been sick from previous heart attacks and had retired from the restaurant which is now run by her family, but the family called her and told her to come meet the President, which she did. It also stated that she was thrilled to meet him, and stated that she said it was the best day of her life. Her condition was frail, but she wanted to see the President, which is something that few Americans will ever be able to do.
The article did not state that Ann's Place is in a part of Akron where shopping malls had closed several years ago, but the neighbors who live in that area have worked hard to bring back other businesses such as a grocery store, boutiques, and other businesses, renewing much of the area.
I am sad that this lady died, but thank you for visiting her, Mr. President.
Obama probably told her that his grandkids will pick up the check.
I think calling someone who is 70 "elderly" is misleading. She may have had health problems that lead to her death, but I don't consider 70 years old to be "elderly" anymore. My stepmother's 3rd husband died a couple of years ago. He was 93, and vital and active until just a few weeks before his death. I have many friends who are in their mid to late 80's, and are still in robust good health, active in mind, body and spirit. Although I think this nice lady's death is a tragedy, calling her "elderly" would mean that the above-mentioned people are "ancient". I know many "older" people who would consider the title of this article insulting. Just another attempt by the news media to garner attention.
My sympathy to her family to have to suffer through a meal with Osama Obama is enough to send one to the never never land.
Mike-424215
So how is that OWS working out for you. Yoiu sound like a left wing loser that is about to lose everything. The unions are going to lose just like your loser democrats.
John Gal
You mean like we did with the healthcare bill? The good news being that there are still 4 more months to go before elections. Four more months which gives you extremists more time to tell us more about the wiping out women's rights, workers protection laws, public education, healthcare, social security, medicare, all public assistance programs and the best of all, how you are going to wipe out the EPA, OSHA and open the doors to completely deregulate corporations so they can destroy the environments and force labor for 2$ an hour and make us feel so warm and protected by them. Instead of wasting our time with the old, "your going to lose", lineage, tell us more about how you plan on doing all these things your party has spouted about during the past three and a half years. I'm interested in learning more.
Obama has to eat. I just hate it that she passed away. I am sure the stress of his visit and his entourage of S.S agents checking her out prior to his quick visit pushed her hypertension to the breaking point.
My condolences for the family. I wish it could have turned out different.
Typhoid Obama. Death, and death panels, follow him everywhere.
The GOP makes me laugh!! The Republican party is so full of fools and idiots! They are "stuck" in their futile attempt at learning life as it is now! They have no idea, be the world tells them what is real!
Republicans, you are fools that laugh like arrogants punks.. I have no feeling for you. You never felt for me and the rest of America knows it too!! You don't care. Go Obama! Go all the way! I love Obama, he's a decent man with decent morals and decent thoughts!!
That's the one thing you Republicans never thought of!!! And never did think of!!!
That's why the Republicans suck a major role in the minority!! They wish they were America!! They are not!! Go Democrats, crush the Republicans in the election please... "WE WILL ALL BE HAPPY! Finally!
Welcome to Right Wing Republican Politics!!! They choose who kill people. They will kill a bunch of black people and try to hide it, but when it comes to the President, they'll try to harm him.
They don't like a President that is black. They don't like a President that is brilliant. They don't like anything that is smart or moving towards a society that accepts all people, of all races and all kinds! They want to stuff out the people that aren't white!
I hate the GOP now. They don't care, they pretend to care, but they will NEVER CARE!
Don't accept anything from the GOP or the Republican Party! They don't care and they'll say they do... But the one thing you can always count on, they'll make sure you pay their taxes while they make money!
Lets get rid of the GOP (Republicans) party this term, AGAIN!
OBAMA IS the MAN! He has made us all improve after the Republicans got rich on us before!
Finally, we can make a difference! VOTE DEMOCRATIC! VOTE OBAMA! The idiot right (republicans) will never tell you anything other than to help themselves!
The Economy has picked up immensely. Everything has improved...
You want to change Presidents Now?!!!
Romney never cared about anybody except his wallet!
He ruined jobs for Americans and specifically cut out jobs for Americans when he knew it might save him some money! He bought huge companies and destroyed their employment by firing employees before they ever came back to their job. He dumped American jobs like Pepsi puts out bottles!
He didn't care, it was business, and his business..... But isn't that what an American President is supposed to think about!!!!!!???????
He doesn't care, he never will and the only one with PROOF OF CARING is President OBAMA. HE HAS ALWAYS CARED AND THE PARTY BEFORE HIM... THEY COULD CARE LESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good flexmind. I'll be waiting for you little man. I think you mean "get used to it". Your spelling and grammar indicate you are a right wing ding a ling.
Remember this: when you purchase a firearm there is no box to check for "Liberal" or "Ignorant Connie",........ so proceed with caution. You might be in for the (last) surprise of your life. ;o) Although no one, including me, takes your silly, empty threat seriously. Just don't go running out into the street trying to start an insurrection. The police tend to take a dim view of that.
There was no indication in the article that this lady was even an Obama supporter. In any case I suspect the President's expression of sympathy did garner him a lot of votes in Akron, and I think that one of the plants that Bain closed and siphoned all the loot/pensions from was around Akron, wasn't it?
Gettin' to look worse and worse for team Romney.
OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
The people that are calling "70" are the people that have read the Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare). Read it! At age 72 you are the living dead. That SS age, you will be required to take death counciling every 5 years or lose your benefits.
YES! 70 is elderly.
Duddogger is this the cheap healthcare you are referring to? I'm not saying we don't need an Afforable Health Plan but this is just a part of the bone that was thrown to us, that we are so grateful for. This doesn't even touch the pork that was thrown in to get it passed.

Flexo- that war has already been fought and your side lost. You aren't too good at American history, are you? But that's okay. We can do it again. You'll lose again and we'll finallt get rid of all these damned Redeemers, teabaggers, reich wingnuts, and repugnicans. It will be much easier than just waiting for them to die from old age and dinosauritis.
Impressive post, Paul. Were you, also, the guy who cherry-picked the intelligence reports Bush/Cheney used to dupe Congress into their illegal war in Iraq?
Oh yeah. Read the following article (and weep) outlining how Bush and his rightwing fanatics believe that national health care is good for Iraqi's, but Americans don't deserve the same:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mark-dorlester/guaranteed-health-care-in_b_280528.html
She probably read whats inside the healthcare bill and had a stroke.
Yep, because I HAVE read it and I am a senior and with this healthcare plan, many seniors will be denied the care they are entitled to, they will have to in front of a panel of 12 people who will decide their fate. I will never forget when at a town hall meeting before the healthcare bill was passed and a lady asked what he thought about her mom who wanted to get a life saving surgery on her heart and she was 89. He told her her mom should just go home and take a pill. This was in the news. This health care bill is being funded by taking away 500 billion dollars from Medicare, a plan that me and all seniors h ave paid into all our life but until we reach a certain age, cannot use. We still pay for it out of our SS and still pay part of our medical bills. Obama has never addressed a gathering of seniors. It has always been young people are union members, or his base. He does not care about us.
Who wants to see Obama in the first place? I sure don't. He is the most unqualified person in the office in the entire history of the nation.
This clearly was the Presidents fault!! He's to blame for everything bad that happens.
(wink, wink)
HERE'S TO ALL OF YOU ANTI-ACA FOLKS
The following is an excerpt from the Iraqi Constitution, written by Bush/ Cheney's rightwing lackies. Note that health care is a staple requirement to be provided by the government of Iraq. Yes, folks, WE helped to set up and fund the Iraqi National Health Care System! Yet, we Americans do not deserve as much! Read on:
Article 30:
First: The State shall guarantee to the individual and the family - especially children and women – social and health security, the basic requirements for living a free and decent life, and shall secure for them suitable income and appropriate housing.
Second: The State shall guarantee social and health security to Iraqis in cases of old age, sickness, employment disability, homelessness, orphanhood, or unemployment, shall work to protect them from ignorance, fear and poverty, and shall provide them housing and special programs of care and rehabilitation, and this shall be regulated by law.
Article 31:
First: Every citizen has the right to health care. The State shall maintain public health and provide the means of prevention and treatment by building different types of hospitals and health institutions.
Second: Individuals and entities have the right to build hospitals, clinics, or private health care centers under the supervision of the State, and this shall be regulated by law.
There you go, folks! This is the REAL DEAL that your TeaPublicans in Congress do not want their right-wingnut lemmings to know about. THE GOP ARE SOCIALISTS!!!
Poetry JK,.....absolute poetry!!!
JK from PA...
And iraqi healthcare and bush2 has what to do with obamacare?? Are you one of the 12 who will sit on obamas death panels? Perhaps you still think that bush2 is president? If so, I have a most interesting question for you to answer. Are you naturally stupid or do you practise at it?
seems like everything he touches dies
Bring it on brother. It will be fun to watch you teabags get pepper sprayed by the police. I'll laugh and make insidious remarks just as you guys did about the OWS protesters.
Again, to borrow a phrase from you teabags, you must not be looking very hard for a job if you can't find one. I see now hiring signs at businesses all over the place. And I live in Michigan where we know about unemployment. You guys screamed and kicked when benefits were extended for unemployed, telling them to get off of their lazy duffs. Talk about hypocrisy.
Hi JK,
Two simple responses...First, Iraqi's wrote their own constitution, not Bush or Cheney or their "lackies". Second, we are not Iraq, and frankly I don't want to be like Iraq.
Two simple suggestions...First, move to Iraq if you like their constitution more than your own. Second, try to make more cogent arguments next time you decide to put your thoughts down.
How on earth does Obama's eating breakfast become a political issue? America is fast becoming Huxley's "Brave New World".
It's amazing how ignorant you right wing people are. You blame Obama for no work like you don't remember it was Bush that put Americans out of work in the first place. No it wasn't the Democrat congress...it was the lack of control of the banks and the SEC by Bush appointees. On top of that it's the Republicans in congress that filibustered against every jobs bill the Democrat proposed. Yeah...it's Obama's fault for following up behind Bush with Republican filibusters.
Now back to the article....may this woman rest in peace. No one knows when their time will come but she must have been very excited to meet the president and really since she was a small business owner she may not have voted for him. But she loved meeting him.
@ Rich
If you are so naive to believe that the Bush people never had any input on Iraq's constitution then keep living the dream. It must be nice in fantasy land.
Didn't even read the article. The suggestive title is an outright attempt at defamation of character (IMO).
Hi Larry,
If you are so inept as to not be able to comprehend the difference between "writing" the Iraqi constitution or having "input" then I suggest you sue your various English teachers for malpractice.
By the way, I'm not sure that reality matters to you given your already flawed comprehension of what has been discussed, but if it does I would think you on the left who want to paint Bush 43 as a socialist who demanded Iraq write this into their constitution would be able to provide some evidence for the claim. But you haven't, because there is no evidence. While it is true that literally hundreds of Americans went to Iraq to help draft their constitution, this was not an exercise in which these people wrote it for them, though I see how it fits into the leftist dogma that the USA is imperialistic. The Iraqis, after decades of despotic rule by Saddam, needed technical legal help in how to craft the language, not how to craft the content. And, certainly, no American demanded the Iraqis put into their constitution this text. These are just more pathetic complaints made by leftists in some feeble effort to justify their own disingenuity.
Why can't we have the same good heathcare as Iraq? Aren't we as good and worthy as they are?
Just wait until after the election, the GOP is going to take control of the senate, then obama wants wont matter. Becuase since the govt lawyer argued that the center point of the ACA is a tax and not a fine, the tax can be repealed, then all of the other bogus things the demoncrats passed will be repealed and we will have veto proof congress. All of your programs are going to be repealed and no more Peter pan complex. Then HBO will air a new reality show hosted by Bill Maher 2012 the year the Jeffersons got evicted haha.
If only Obama care has passed in time, she'd still be alive today
Hi WHAT?
I think the answer is because we don't have the constitution of Iraq, and probably more importantly you, and I, don't want to be like Iraq. You know, they fund their health care system, which is ancient compared to ours, with petrodollars. Are you suggesting that we should drill, baby, drill? Naw, it would be too much for a conservative to expect a liberal to conjure up a complete thought.
JK, what does Bush/Cheney have to do with the crap we got saddled with? Changing the subject and other blame games for things totally irrelevant to our so called health plan, does not change the contents.
I am not denying the fact, something needs to be done about health care in our country. My point is, this plan takes away from those who will need it most and give it to many whom are not entitled to it. How are the poor suppose to pay for it? It ain't FREE! Reckon, maybe we the people should go ahead and pitch tent outside the prison walls and wait for the next vacancy?
Instead of making excuses, read the healthcare bill. How much actually pertains to health? Secondly, Bush was not re-elected to a 3rd term, apparently Obama forgot to evict him.
Well, John Gaul--you've shown your true "colors," haven't you?
Paul:: From where do you get the idea that congress is not on the Social Security system? It was so, but that only applies to those who have been in congress forever-- and there aren't many of those left (if any).
Against Union Thievery, les-2878776, John Gal, you're each suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.
The conservative blogs are already making a point of it. :-(
Nothing like exploiting a dead woman. Dead babies are next.
Only for Fox Noise, though.
She obviously could not take the excitement. It was nice of Obama to call her daughter though..
Exactly Dal, Obama thinks nothing of abortions. It's in his Obamascare health plan. IT'S A TAX PEOPLE! Anyone making under 250,000.00 better be purchasing health insurance or you will be TAXED every year on your tax return!
What is wrong with you sick, horrible people making political comments about women who died after seeing an American president? Are you really proud of yourselves and would you want your children to be so mean? I can't believe the most horrible comments are coming from the so called "conservative" religious right - what hypocrites.
wonder how many parents of dead soldiers...get a phone call from the goofy politicians...
Dal
Scott Walker already did the dead babies thing a few months ago to get reelected. Old hat for the Pubs.
For their next act, the Pubs will show you dead babies being rendered into pink slime. No idea how they will blame it on Obama. It takes a sick mind.
It was worth scrolling clear down here to add my "wait until the R's get a chance to spin this with their intelligent mockery. I know that's an oxymoron, so deliver me.
Against Union Thievery,
Why do only I get to pay when YOU go to the emergency room? What makes you so special that YOU don't have to have health insurance and that I have to cover you? Tell me?
Oh yeah... you're never going to get into a car accident. Or fall down and get a leg broken. Or get pneumonia. Except that you do, and then end up going to the emergency room, and spunge off me in the process - to the tune of costing me and my fellow insurance payers around $1000 per year each.
Asking you to pay a little bit in to distribute the burdon may be seen as an unfair tax to you, but it's just recouping money that you are spending already!
Seeing a communist back-stabbing thieving president sure isn't worth dying for that's for sure
Borlock guy...
Best study human nature. The low bar tax penalty and the government already saying that they won't enforce/pursue it already eliminates any incentive for many to obtain health insurance that may or may not be needed in the future.
Now, having ER's and free clinics refuse any service for those who can't provide any proof of insurance might be a more appropriate incentive to carry insurance.
Symbolic of how obama has killed the economy. I can't believe anyone is dumb enough to vote for obama.
Plain Bob.........just how many families and parents got a call from Bush/Cheney after they lied those dead and dying soldiers into a war based on lies just to get the oil fields, just to give billions of no bid contracts to Haliburton(Cheney's compay), and so Bush jr could be remembered as a war president(his own words, I want to go to war because war presidents are remembered)?
You are going to be paying taxes for that war past your life time if repubs have any say in it.
Against unions, Yes it is a tax/penalty. Do you have insurance? If so you don't pay the tax. It also taxes tanning salon services. Don't want to pay that tax? Go sit outside and get REAL sunlight. It also mandates that insurance companies keep their overhead costs down to 20% of what they collect in premiums. Which will bring down costs. If they exceed 20% they must return the overcharges. No more overcharging and giving the CEO another 50 million dollar raise. What do you think will happen to your premiums when hospitals stop charging you when they treat the uninsured? They'll go down. Actually try reading the facts before you are against something. Just once. You might like it.
It's a conspiracy! etc.
It's Bush's fault.
Gallop poll 6-14-12....68% of all Americans blame Bush for the economy mess.
Darn, I was expecting a much more interesting article. I misread the headline as, "Elderly Ohio woman dies hours after Obama eats her at restaurant." What a disappointment.
@starsailing
"Gallup poll are the first showing a majority of Americans, 53%, assigning significant blame to Obama." Same story. Fun fact, Gallup polls can pretty much be made to say anything you want them to.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/149600/Slight-Majority-Blame-Obama-Economy.aspx
This is the stupidest article ever. Rightwing media reaching.
Reaching MSNBC? Are you kidding?
Dal, Right wing media reaching for what? What makes this right wing media?
A lady is dead. The excitement of meeting her president may have contributed. I'm glad she was able to meet him.
I personaly have no desire to meet him.
MSNBC right wing. You have got to be kidding! MSNBC is Obama's "unofficial" propaganda ministry.
George Bush was your utopia, I'm sure. How could you ever be satisfied after that grand experience, eh, papagoofy?
Duane - yer not the bearded one who voted for Perot, are you. Shame, shame! I love how hapless TeaTards turn their own blinding fallacies on those they fail to understand...
you are goofy and if that's your picture, you look goofy too!
She was dying to meet the President.
Um... WOW. Thread OVER.
Aisle seat, please...
Funny, we are all dying to see the last of him...
He'll be the death of all of us if he gets another four years.
This is true if you are an OLD person.....BO wants them all gone and Obamascare will see to it. The young have been brainwashed to hate America and the old people are the ones who know what America is all about and still LOVE her. He wants the lovers of America gone....
This is hate talk, all of you. You are talking about an old lady who was called up by her family to invite her to come meet the President who was eating at the family restaurant she had started. She had a known heart condition, but she wanted to come meet him.
Are all of you so insensitive and hateful at other times? Do you go to church, any of you?
It could have been the other way around, ya know. (Not funny, I know)
Condolences to her family and friends. Could she really have gotten so excited that it caused this?
The whole article (in the Akron Beacon Journal) states that she had previous heart attacks, and was retired from the restaurant. The family called her when the President arrived because they knew she would want to meet him. Probably any excitement at all would have caused another heart attack, but she really wanted to see him. It is too bad, but she chose to meet him.
But after the Novemeber 2012 election that wont matter anymore. As he and his queenie are going to get evicted from the tax roles. Cut all federal spending by 20%, repeal all of the social programs and evict Osama from the peoples house. it is a brave new world....
I knew his visits were the kiss of death to a business but this is a little much!
Shows you just how dangerous he really is!
He wants a smootch from you, fer shure, Blondie (hey, didn't you recently work for FOX?)!
Some of the people on here are true idiots! Someone dies and you brain dead people find some way of contributing to the health-care act (which is not even fully implemented). Please either go back to school and get an education so that you can understand simple articles when they are written or just keep your ignorant asses in the house and please stay off the computer Your ignorance is embarrassing. Condolences to the family!!!!!!!!
Blonde Coyote, I wonder if that includes countries too?
@Blonde Coyote
With a name like BLONDE coyote is an understatement. Perhaps the name "STUCK ON STUPID" is more fitting. Need I say more????
Wasn't their place featured on Diner's Drive in's and Dives? :o
Sorry, watch too much food network when nothing else is on. RIP
You'll likely need some cheap health care coverage soon, I'm sure. RIP on you.
and just where will you be able to find cheap health care?
Well sow, if you wasn't such a bag freak you might understand that the health care law will lower your preimums. Its called exchanges and competition. Also in the law is the fact that insurance companies have to pay 80% to actual health care. You sick SOB's on the right hate Obama because he is a man of color, it has nothing to do with the health care law. Your post and many others here are proof of bigotry in motion. The health care law is a good one. Not the best and it needs work. But a step in the right direction.
Hi John,
I don't know what makes you think premiums will decline, or even increase at a declining rate. The exchanges won't produce competition like you would expect from a normal market, and the efficiencies that would result, because they aren't normal markets. Their every act will be regulated and controlled by a federal agency. And I don't know why you go to blame anyone who disagrees with this law for being racist. I think the law is neither constitutional nor efficacious, but it has nothing to do with Obama's race, since Obama, despite it being called Obamacare, had virtually no influence over how it was crafted and what it contained. He farmed those duties out to Pelosi and Reid and their delegates.
Every score of the law shows total costs up, and up faster than the curve would've predicted. There will be less innovation and less access if you want any hope of cost containment, neither of which is a good thing. There were ways to go about fixing the problem, but getting more of the cause of the problem, which is government policy, was exactly the wrong way to go. We can go on further if you like, but you'll have to stow the racist crap. It's beneath even you.
John, it's nice to have an authority on board. You obviously have all the answers. This country cannot afford Obama care, and so many people will be at the bottom, we will not be able to collect enough taxes to "cover" all the freebies. A good "law" is a matter of perception at this point. I bet it wont be in practice a year or two until the deafening wail of this society will be heard around the globe. The truth is, no one knows what is going to happen, but it looks tough from this vantage point. Roberts himself said, it's not a good idea, it's just not unconstitutional. It's a tax, and it can be levied without reservation, on whomever the government chooses. BHO may be a man of color, but first and foremost, he's a big disappointment. The saints preserve us. I don't give a RIP what color he is. His folly is just as devastating as Jimmy Carter's.
It's always the race card with you Obama lovers. We don't like Obama because he is the WORST President, white, yellow, black, red, brown, or green. that we have EVER had - worse than Jimmy Carter, and that is saying a lot! Yes, Jimmy Carter is white and I didn't like him either. So I guess I'm a racist against whites and blacks. You certainly make yourself sound foolish. If Herman Cain was the Republican nominee, I would have no problem voting for him. In fact, I think Romney should choose him as his VP or put him on his Cabinet when he takes office. There is no comparing Cain and Obama. Cain is articulate, smart and knows how to create jobs. Unlike Obama who keeps promising but things keep getting worse. Goodbye, good riddance come November!
Hi Liaa,
Just because five justices say it was constitutional doesn't make them right. What the majority did was to make it possible for Congress to pass all sorts of laws regulating behavior that would have otherwise been unlawful and by attaching a financial penalty to it which they will not call a tax the court will approve. Congress SHOULD have unlimited taxing authority in order to conduct the powers it has in Article One. Health care is not one of those powers. Congress SHOULD NOT have unlimited taxing authority in order to extend and expand its powers beyond Article One. This is the folly of this opinion, and the shame of the five who voted for rejecting petitioner's claim.
Hey John In Battle Creek!
Let me ask you, since your so sure the health care law will lower premiums. Have you read the health care law bill? Have you noticed the word"Dimmitude, on page 107 " by the way so you don't have to read thru all the other crap your man of color is shoving down the throats of the American people! Find out what it means and then tell me your "Man of Color" is for the American people!!!!!!
The comments here tonight seem to get more ridiculous as the hours get later. This was a comment board started over a little old lady who died today hours after meeting the President of the United States. It has turned into bashing her diet, restaurant, Obama as President, how old she looked, and now a discussion regrarding "Obamacare". Rich and Liaa, I don't know if you work in the Healthcare industry, but I am pretty sure that you do not. As someone who has spent 30 yrs in Healthcare Administration, I can tell you both that the Health Care Bill is not the best one, but it certainly has some very, very good benefits. For instance Liaa, in a statement above you mentioned you have no money, no prospects, and a host of other things and how "over it" you were. You are EXACTLY the person this plan will help the most. YOU CANNOT BE DENIED HEALTHCARE NOW IF YOU HAVE NO JOB OR MONEY!!! Why shouldn't you have the same choice of a 80%/20% plan for $233 a month with a $155 rebate that Congress, our Military, our Senior Citizens, and all Federal Employees have access to? How is this a bad thing for you. And John...if an employer decides to drop your insurance and has to pay a $2000 penalty tax...so what? It was his responsibility to provide a form of coverage for you anyway. And if you are an employer...drop your employees from the lousy HMO plans you now pay through the nose for and pay the $2,000 per employee and save a bunch of money. This plan allows people the right to insurance. They can't be dropped for getting cancer, kids can't get dropped off their parents insurance because they were born with a birth defect or health problem. Young peole across america can stay on their parents insurance until age 26 now without paying double for a COBRA policy. And once completely implemented in 2014, Insurance companies will have no choice but to become a competative market again. Otherwise, consumers will choose the Federal plan over theirs and Blue Cross and Blue Shield will no longer have a 400% profit margin. They will loose customers of their insurance to the Federal plan because it pays more out in benefits and cost much less. This plan is a win-win for the American people. It gives choices, opens markets up for competition, and will work. If you are old enough, you would remember when Medicare first started under Pres. Johnson. I was just a young teenager, but people said the same things. Medicare worked, worked well and still does. It needs to be redefined on it's DRG payor program (if you don't understand what that is - it's that a hospital gets paid based upon the weight of the clinical diagnosis a patient is actually being admitted for) and there is a lot of fraud in the program that cost the Federal Govt over 200 Billion a year. The new Obamacare plan, regulated that as well.
Hi Lorraine,
There is so much to disagree with you about the ACA, but I can agree I am not employed within the industry, though I am unsure how this matters at all. Just as you would not allow, say, aircraft mechanics, to decide for you the level of repair a plane must be in before it flies you to your destination, I don't have to allow people with their own self-interest decide for me what kind of health care system is best. I get, still I hope, the ability to choose for myself what is best.
That said, I think there was a good way to go about every ostensible goal of the ACA but without the infringement on liberty, or on constitutional constraint. Even if I take as sincere the goals of Obamacare, like portability and universality and cost containment, the reality is that the first is likely achievable, the second partly achievable, and the latter not at all achievable. Dollar costs might be possible to be contained, but costs are measured in a variety of ways, like prices, quality, access, innovation, and so on.
What was that good way to go about this? Time limit block grants to the states for the purpose of making a refundable tax credit possible for the purpose of an actuarialy based insurance policy and allow interstate competition, even foreign competition, among insurers. There's a lot packed into that one sentence, but what it means, simply put, is every policy would be portable, all people regardless of income could purchase coverage, and no one would be denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions. What would have been preserved would be the public functions of insurers (risk assessment and management), your ability to choose for yourself what plan you want, innovation, and access.
There will always be rationing in health care, just as there is in every commodity of any kind. But you, not a bureaucrat you will never meet, and who will never know you, should be in charge of what kind of rationing you want to effect. What you support makes you less free, less an individual, and empowers the government over you. What I support accomplishes the various things you want done, but without the cancer of serfdom you require.
Governments are people too, my friend.
The government is you.
If you want to worry about serfdom, worry about being beholden to a faceless corporation. It's pretty funny, all these people who start foaming at the mouth over the idea of their representative government helping them, but have no problem with corporations knowing about and running the most intimate details of their lives; people who can never be voted out and are never answerable to them.
Hi again Lorraine,
I guess I should dispute at least one of your claims. Medicare has never come it at or under budget, and has never provided the level of benefits promised for the unit cost predicted. There is tens of billions in fraud. I understand you want mroe federal involvement in your daily life, but the evidence this has been a benefit to individuals unachievable in another way, or a benefit to the nation as a whole (even economically), and has all been conducted within the limit of what Congress can do, is at best doubtful. And Medicare, like Medicaid, has had plenty of regulators running around, or sitting in offices reading reports, to prevent such abuses. The problem is that government is not designed to be efficient, and Obamacare will be no different.
Actually, that isn't a problem...we should never, I hope, want to live in a country governed efficiently from a central location. If you choose correctly, then being in government-run or controlled industries can be highly profitable since they are rife with corruption, even where individuals aren't corrupt.
Hi Byron,
Governments are made up of people, but the government itself is hardly a person. I am responsible for my government because I get to elect my representatives, but I am not the government. What really scares me about your post is that you see no limit on government at all other than what voters decide, but isn't this how we got into the mess of borrowing from the future in order to live beyond our means today? I think you might want to read Federalist 39, particularly, to see why we need limited government. If our framers had your idea in mind we'd have created only a parliament and given it unlimited powers to effect our wishes. They didn't. They were right, you are wrong.
Have some respect folks! But if you are going to discuss health care, read the bill. Lorraine is correct: it will help you if you earn less; you won't be turned away if you have cancer. No emergency room treats cancer, didn't you know that? ERs will stop heart attacks if they can, but the major surgeries are not done by the ER; those need insurance. The insurance companies take most of the money they make as profit. Without this bill, Medicare would go bankrupt in a couple of years. With this bill, there is a chance it will last until you need it; much more of a chance of helping the elderly. There is NO CLAUSE that says that suddenly the elderly won't get care.
And if you are not currently paying medical insurance, you think you are God and will never get sick or die. It doesn't matter if you are young, or well now, just wait 50 years; think of this health care plan as a savings plan for when you are sick. So you already have a medical savings plan, you say? No you don't. Nobody can pay for their own meds if they happen to be unlucky enough to get the more expensive of the diseases. So you figure that people who cannot pay should die? Then YOU are the death panel.
Rich
Not quite sure what it is exactly you are trying to say. It appears that your main concern is that you feel that the government will be running healthcare in our country. Somehow the Affordable Health Care Act poses a threat some way to an individuals right to choose. And believe me, I am not for federal involvement in my daily life, but you say you don't want people with their own self-interest making decisions for your life, what do you think health insurance companies are free to do now. The Affordable healthcare Act has put limits on companies taking your money for providing health insurance for you and making all the decisions regarding what you can have, when you can have it, and how much treatment they will allow you to have and pay for after you give them your hard earned money for your premium. Your insurance premium you pay out of your pocket goes to the insurance company who has only one agenda...to make more money. They distribute health care and benefits to their paying customers and make life and death decisions (even when it is not in the best interest of the patient) based upon their profits not your life. The Obamacare - Affordable Healthcare Act takes that power away from them now by instituting federal regulations to benefit patients. The paying customers of the insurance companies. Therre is NO government takeover of the healthcare system with this bill and no government alternative insurance to a private system. There is only the OPPORTUNITY for people to choose a federal program, the same as Medicare like Seniors have, or Champus, like the Military have, or the Federal program equivalent like Federal govt employees get to choose. It is a 80/20 plan, which most private insurance companies like Aetna, Blue shield, and Blue Cross won't even offer anymore. The tax increase of 3.8% on individuals making "Investment income" will go back to the same tax that was in existence under Ronald Reagan.
Also, Businesses who provide health insurance can now have a tax-free benefit for providing coverage which was eliminated during the Bush administration. And 575 Billion over 10 years in reducing Medicare costs to fees paid for physician, durable medical goods, and DRG's is a good thing. Right now, you know who regulates Federal Medicare Payments to doctors and Hospitals....the AMA (American Medical Association). Talk about having a vested interest in keeping those fees high!! We need the AMA out of bundling of Medicare claims and let the federal government manage the program. They do not have a vested interest in seeing their collegues make more money off the backs of tax payers.
I can't tell you the number of times insurance companies have screwed a patient out of their rightful benefits. There has been no regulation for Health Insurance companies in this country and there needs to be some. They will now have to be accountable to the people who pay their salaries and big bonuses who have been loyal customers making their premium payments only to have benefits terminated when they get really sick and have procedures and medical necessities denied. More people have gone bankrupt on medical bills who have insurance than those who do not.
Hi Lorraine,
Your first claim is odd since I think I have been very clear. Nevertheless, you have a great many complaints about our current system, and to most of those, I agree. The problem is with your solution. It won't work. I challenge you to name a governmental program of significance (by that I mean something we might both know of that affects us nationally) which has come it at or below budget, AND/OR provided more benefits per unit of cost than originally promised. One simply doesn't exist. Government always spends too much and provides too little, but the one thing they ostensibly do provide to the masses is the belief that everyone will be in the same boat.
This, too, is a fallacy. People with means will always be able to escape the confines of a crappy system, just as they do now. So the question isn't how to punish firms, or to punish the rich, it is how to deal with your sincere concerns about how the system presently operates in a way which doesn't diminish your power over yourself. The ACA fails miserably, without any significant implementation, at this task. You want portability, you want universality, you want cost containment. You don't seem too concerned about individual control over your own health care destiny, but I am principally concerned with this aspect since without it what liberty, in supposedly a free nation, do you really possess?
The ACA, you think, goes to great lengths to solve your problems, but as I mentioned before it's a mixed bag at best, and cost containment will prove an utter failure alone. But my concern about being a free human rather than a subject of the state takes an even bigger hit. Like I mentioned there is a better solution, one which deals with your goals and satisfies my concerns, but because it doesn't provide for government control over industry, and over individuals, the left in this country will have none of it. So, there is no way to square this circle, and I see no way to compromise with the left. I want you, for instance, to get your concerns satisfied, but you are indifferent to mine, so what is there to compromise on?
My worry, just to be clear, isn't that the government will control health care per se. The government controls the military, and I don't worry about that. The government controls, the minting of money, and I don't worry about that. I might worry about how they utilize their control, but the constitution plainly gives to the government control over these powers, among others. What the constitution doesn't do is provide for governmental control over health care (among other things the government presently involves itself), and so it's this extraconstitutionalism that worries me. When government can operate outside of the law, or redefine at its whim what the law is, then the republic no longer exists and despotic rule does. This should worry everyone, including you.
Rich
You are so caught up on "government" control that there is no rationality in continuing this convesation with you. You challenge me to mention one government agency that protects or regulates "our choices" how about the Government run FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION. Where do you think americans would be without those controls. I don't know about you, but I feel a bit more secure purchasing produce, dairy, and meats knowing that there are government mandates regulating it. Is that agency perfect....no, nothing is perfect in the real world. But this over enunciation of "government taking over healthcare" is absurd at best. It's about making health insurance companies accountable with YOUR MONEY you pay them for healthcare. I don't understand why anyone would be against that. The Federal Comsumer under the laws of the Trade commission regulate what a bank can charge you for interest or a legislate federal controls over credit card companies to protect the american public, What is so different in regulating the Insurance conpanies who are only interested in making more money, that their shares value at on the NYSE, and how much bonuses their executives get and profit margins. Millions upon Millions of Americans have been cancelled after becoming very ill. Children with something as simple as Asthma, have been cancelled off their parents insurance programs, Insurance companies have been allowed to rake in record profits and increase premiums for years with absolutely no regulation. The biggest problem is that people actually believe that the Affordability Healthcare Act will somehow take away their rights. It does not. It gives consumers a choice to choose a federal program like (Medicare, Champus, and the Federal Insurance program all Government employees are allowed to participate in). The premiums are lower and most poor and uninsured now can't even get a private policy because one of the mandates requires they have had health insurance within the last year. Do you know that if you applied for health insurance today, you must sign away your rights to privacy in order that they run your name through a national data base nsurance system to see if any claims were paid on you in the last year. If you so much as had an ear infection and went to the doctor and received antibiotics, Blue Sheild of CA could deny you or put a 150% premium on your 1st year of coverage and not pay for another ear infection for 1 year calling it a "pre-existing condition".
I understand you are worried about government controls, but when it comes to health care...the health insurance companies in our country have taken such advantage of their power that they are the ones who have made healthcare expensive, unaffordable, and for most people completely unattainable. They are invasive into our private lives more than you will ever realize (or admit). A person sitting behind a computer monitor at your insurance company holds all the cards regarding what you receive for healthcare whether you are willing to admit this or not. And the abuse is rampant with a patients private information from one company to another. Why do you think the HIPPA laws were legistlated protecting your individual rights to privacy regarding your healthcare and services?
The new healthcare bill is simply a beginning to give americans the right to choose, get out from under the demands of private insurance companies. Regulate by law the fact that americans can no longer be discriminated against in purchasing health insurance or penalized for becoming ill. It is not a government take over. I myself, have what is referred to as a "Cadilac plan" because of my income and what I pay for the plan I have chosen. I am not happy with being taxed on that plan, but you see....I have a choice now, I don't have to keep it if I don't want to. Instead of paying $984.60 per month, I can go to another company, not be penalized at a higher premium for having surgery last year or a history of cancer, or I can purchase the Federal plan for $255 per month for the same coverage I have now......and can't be denied. The "extraconstitiionalism" that worries you and should worry me.....my word, we already have a system of taxation that worries me more. Not having Federal government controls over some aspects that affect my life would worry me...Remember back when the FAA and Washington deregulated the Airlines? Remember what happened, the minute deregulation took place...airlines failed, maintenance guidelines failed, costs went up, so I appreciate your point of view, I really do....I know it is coming from a place where you are not willing to get past "government control and government involvement in american lives" but this is a good thing for healthcare....it's not control of you or me and our health, it's regulation regarding insurance and affordable healthcare. There is not one single mandate in the law that tells you or I what to do regarding our own individual liberties regarding our health. Otherwise, there would have been a NO MORE SMOKING ban, considering smoking leads to over 275 Billion in healthcare cost per year in this country.
I respect your viewpoints Rich, I really do and that is what is so great about our country...we all get an opinion, options, and perspectives. You have one belief and I have another. I wish you well Rich. and I do hope that this new healthcare bill will someway impact someone close to you someday that you will see how it has helped them. Whether it be your child you without the mandate would be dropped from your policy or a parent who has high blood pressure and could not afford the high premium before because it was a pre-existing condition can now get affordable care, or a friend who can't have their premium doubled because someone without car insurance hit them and their insurance had to pay for medical care and then dropped them through no fault of theirs. Or the next time you or someone you know changes jobs and that employer offers insurance coverage (rare) their won't be pages of embarrasing questions regrding your health, activities, and previous conditions that passes through your employers hand onto human resources, onto the insurance company to decide if they want to cover you. This bill also eliminates employers having access to your most protected rights of privacy regarding your health. You know how many people in this country get turned down for a job just by filling out paperwork and have to include whether they've had a pre-existing condition (like maybe cancer 10 yrs ago or a broken leg 5 yrs ago) and because the insurance would be so high to cover them.....they don't get a job. Now that can't happen anymore either. Sometimes....just sometimes.....government involvement in our lives is good. It's been nice having this civilized debate with your Rich...Thanks for the civility and sometimes people need to just agree to disagree.
All the best.
Hi Lorraine,
Thanks to you as well for being civil. But I do agree there is no where else to go, not because there isn't, but because my very simple question of you was completely turned into something I never asked. It's hard to make progress in this medium when we fundamentally fail to understand one another. Regards.
Rich
The government run Federal Medicare Part D prescription Drug Program of 2003, predicted cost was projected at 49 Billion and came in at 41 Billion, 8 Bilion dollars less, Why? Cost for the program were controlled by Congress and it worked. Didn't mean to disregard the question in my post. But we are in total agreement on one fact, virtually NO program meets the CBO projected costs.
Hey Lorraine,
There might be a couple other examples too. But the one you picked may be the best, both because it has currency since it was relatively recently passed, and we can also compare its performance to the status quo position that some health care consumers faced. Two things about your example to me are relevant. The first is that fewer people, and by a significant amount fewer, participated in the program than predicted when it was passed. The second is that the cost of the drugs Part D covers fell by a smaller percentage than those drugs' prices declined in other purchasing methods.
The first problem relates, obviously, to a simple difference in how many people are covered. If the prediction was 10 million but only 8 million were covered, then we should expect a number closer to 80% (though not exactly), just to call it even. In the case of Part D it wasn't so close to proportional which means that the cost per participant was, in fact, slightly higher than predicted.
The second problem relates to the basic inefficiency argument about government. But it's hard to know if suppliers are simply padding costs or if, like I tend to think, when the government sets a ceiling it also sets a floor. So while similar non-Part D prescription costs declined by more than 30%, Part D saw decreases of about 2/3 that amount. It could be that full competition, or a fully competitive market, hasn't really developed yet, but it will be a decade or more before we know.
Still, one thing we do know is that Medicare and Medicaid, the VA too, have never met projections for the benefits predicted. You and I both seem to agree that the government is, organically I think (maybe not you?), inefficient. To me this is a blessing, not a curse, but that is another debate. But what it does mean is that the promise of cost containment, which was one of the central supports Mr. Obama gave for his claim the feds must run the show, was a false promise. I don't think Mr. Obama is particularly stupid, but I also don't think he is wise. And I take him at his word that he wants, and wanted, to make things better. But like I also said, there was a way, still is too, to get you all the benefits you think Obamacare gives you, but without the obvious failures and problems associated with it. We will have to see if in November the American people want this poorly prepared loaf, or if they might prefer, like I hope, to demand something else from the kitchen.

You're each suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.
She got to meet a president and that's something I've never done. Condolences to her family. BTW, they have grits in Ohio?
Double duh!
If I saw obama in a restaurant I'd take a couple of Rolaids and leave.
he's not a president worth meeting, ug!
No bigots here, thats for sure ) - ;
Akron had the first manufacturer of the harvester. Then the rubber industry, and invented synthetic rubber which saved us in World War II. We see blimps being tested often.
Lots of people came to Akron and brought all kinds of recipes with them. Grits is common in Akron, along with favorites from all over the world.
I really hate you people. Right wing nut job pandy flacker IDIOTS! Sick and disgusting your vile views on a POTUS that seems to have more in positive mind for the people than dirt bags like bush and cheney. Your gonna so lose you S.O.B's I hope Obama wins so I can hear you cry like the sick stupid babies that you are. You have no reason to be living on this planet with your vile and disgusting ideals. EAT A BULLET YOU TURDS!
Punk rock...you might want to learn how to write and conform a sentence, I'm not sure that's even English. But that's what people should expect from obummer supporters.
PuNkROCKchangedMY!life, keep it to yourself. You're suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.
He is killing us more than one at a time. But condolences to her family.
too bad it wasn't you.
that is a violation dot.
Shoot Lucy1 - if 'ugliness and lack of dignity' were also violations - this page would be pretty much blank. These blogs just spin faster as they swirl the bottom of the toilet.
Bill,
You give the name Bill a bad name. Your name should have meant that you were smarter than to make such an ignorant comment.
Obama is killing no one.
You are obviously four years old, or you had a brain injury preventing you from remembering anything that happened before January 2009 when the PRESIDENT was inagurated.
So you don't remember Paulson, Bush, Cheney, Rice, Brown, Katrina, Iraq, etc????????????????
Before you shoot off your ignorant OREGONIAN mouth, try READING the Affordable Healthcare Act for YOURSELF instead of letting jacka$$e$ like Limbaugh, Hannity and Romney read it to you.
By the way, how does it feel being surrounded by level headed liberals everywhere you go?
I am sorry for my comment earlier. It was out of line.
That's ok Dot. We know why you said it and we all have felt that way about someone. My philosophy is this: Challenge them to use Spell check (ooooh, SCARY!, or comment on their misuse of grammar (What's that they ask) or words, like using "to" instead of "too". It confuses them.
You can also make fun of their user name. King Snake? More like Lost Worm...LOL
I find this entire story sad. The right trying to use this poor lady's death as President Obama's fault somehow. If they were in Ohio, where the heatwave is still in full swing, she probably was working in an overheated kitchen and got dehydrated from that and going outside for pictures.
My Mom died a week after we held a surprise 90th birthday party, complete with lots of pictures. I am sure that the family will have the comfort of having pictures of her from today.
Just as I am sure some people will use this sad event for their own warped comments. It's sad and they are pathetic.
his visit could most certainly have contributed to her death. Meeting the President could elevate anyone's heart rate, that said, I don't think anyone thinks her death is his fault. It's not a political story, it's a human story. All of the partisan back and forth in the comment section is silly. Condolences to her family.
Romney 2012! :-)
Level headed liberals? i almost spit out my coffee laughing at your joke.
They used to just faint at the sight of the Messiah. Obama must have reminded her what ObamaCare will cost her. OHHHH, it’s the big one!!
Romney CARE in Massachsetts costs $325 per month for a family of 3. ROMNEY will OUTSOURCE your HEALTHCARE to INDIA and Charge you $375 per month and say I promised you I would repeal obamacare.
the 250 million dollar man will put the middle class on top of his suv in a kennel. If your lucky perhaps Jeb will be his VP and we can all shoot for planet mars colonization in 2015
So nobody seems to get the fact that the health care law affects only the FREE RIDERS that are getting
hurt doing stupid redneck stunts and going to the emergency room for free doctorin'.
The rest of y'all if you have insurance, like any sane person that is trying to protect his future would do, NOTHING CHANGES, except the FEAR MONGERING from FOX.
When I was clicking on the comments tab I was making a mental list of who would be the most classless piece of trash to comment on this article and Road Warrior was high on my list of vermin.
Glad to see you never disappoint, loser.
kennyw-2983735, you're suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.
Must have been the end of her libby bucket list. RIP
This poor lady was 70...I assume that the picture featured above was taken recently...she definitely wasn't aging well...sorry for this family's loss. Heart disease is a killer.
Likely she ate the "truckstop" type food that she served-not good for health especially the heart and probably why she passed so young-sad. Most of us can't eat this way and maintain health.
WTF? What's wrong with you Juanita? What if this was YOUR granny???
She was beautiful to her family. Think before you key in something like this comment.
And John, I bet she could have worked rings around you. Shame.
Everyone here should STOP BEING JUDGEMENTAL (with the emphasis on MENTAL). Her family is going to read these comments. Would you say these things directly to them? If not, don't put them up, ok?
Bravo MN BadGirl
70 is not that old and who are you Juanita to judge how someone looks in a photograph posing with her family, the same family who might read these comments on this, the worse day of their lives with broken hearts?
What a misserably insensitive thing to write in a public forum. And John, it's good to know a perfect stranger can also pass judgement on her dietary needs. Considering both of you are so insightful, why not just say Rest in Peace little lady, and express your condolences to her family.
Juanita you are truly an ignorant idiot!
Some people in Akron (not all) do eat a high-fat diet: we are (usually) in a very cold climate here, and some people eat diets based on their family traditions. My sister's mother-in-law and father-in-law both died in their mid-90s on that diet; almost never went to doctors either, because they never got sick until near the end, and they never had dementia either. They played a lot of golf (which is not expensive in Akron), and belonged to the garden club (which runs many of the city's parks).
I do know somebody who has heart disease, and eats everything she is supposed to, no fat, etc., and she is not overweight, and she exercises. Heart disease is a killer; this lady in the article had already survived other heart attacks. In another city she might not have survived her previous heart attacks; in Akron, we also have top-notch hospitals. Look them up: both Akron General and Summa are rated very highly.
As Isaid MOST of us can't eat a high fat diet and maintain good health! There will ALWAYS be exceptions to this, those who won the genetic lottery.
I am sorry for this family's lost... I pray for God's comfort to endue this lost.
Yes, Heart disease is a killer. however, Pres. Obama's policies are also killers.
Uhoh, looks like Obama won't be satisfied with just killing the economy anymore.
The economy was DOA when Obama took office you idiot
Just once people can't you be nice and express condolences to the family. It doesn't matter which side you are on it is a sad day for that family. May she rest in peace.
I agree.
My condolences to the family.
@Den: I think you are expecting too much from these people. They literally are unfeeling and callous in nature. From the comments posted it doesn't surprise me, really. What else do you expect from Republicans. They seem to have collectively hardened. These are probably the same people who go to church every Sunday and claim to be good christians. Yeah, whatever gets you through the day. May the family find peace and healing at losing their matriarch.
@DEN
I have to agree 100%. It's sad that so many so called intelligent people can smear a sad event with ignorant comments. RIP, and may the family find comfort in knowing that at least she experienced a big event before she was called home.
Thank you DEN, that is exactly what I was going to say as well. So many people bashing politics and others political beliefs (as if one side has ALL the right answers) instead of offering condolences.
Alaska girl, I can only hope you realize the hypocrisy of your statement when you responded to DEN, then went after Republicans and Christians.
Whatever your religious belief, political belief, personal belief, it means absolutely nothing when compared to the loss of a loved one. My condolences to the family, I hope they can heal quickly and find comfort in the fact that in her last moments she did something that people rarely have the honor to do.
Hey Den; We'll have to pray for these ignorant spineless people whom have nothing more in life, but to make lite of someones death. come-on let it rest.. give it a break.. there are many other headlines to spew your hatred.
Yeah, Lyrica I did realize the hypocrisy, but thanks for feeling the need to point it out, teacher.
Lol hardly a teacher but anytime, student. :D
For the record people I'm republican. We do have feelings and care. I'm sure it is one of lifes highlight for anyone to meet any president and it's too bad this woman didn't live longer to enjoy it and maybe see that picture of her with the President in her restaurant. We all need to have compassion for each other. If we can't be civil to each other then why do we expect our leaders to be any different.
I find it amazing that when party politics turns ugly between Republicans and Democrats that the people of our nation turn just as ugly. Our leaders set the stage for political retoric, they set the example, and all of us as Americans should use a little more restraint when talking about "the other side". When our military enter into conflict and die, we don't label them Democrats or Republicans. We call them couragous American soldiers willing to lay their life down for US.....our Country. Let's stop the bashing and maybe we as Americans can set an example for politicians that there are fundamental differences between the parties,There is supposed to be... but when it all comes down to it...we are ALL AMERICANS. There are Liberal points of view, Conservative Points of view, People who have some of both points of view, and most people are somewhere in the middle. Let's stop the "these People" and "those People" and lets just be Americans.
A lot of the blaming one side against the other falls into Obama's lap. He has divided this country like no other President. Pitting the 99%ers against the 1% percenters. The rich against the poor. I am sick and tired of his rhetoric.
Joan....are you actually kidding me? Pres. Obama has created a divide in this country? REALLY??? Where were you when Karl Rove and all of his friends created such a divide within our own Republican party that they slammed a War Hero, Vietnam Veteran, POW and when they could not attack him anymore, they went after his wife who was the Executive Director of the Red Cross. That American Hero that was dragged through the mud which started the shift in this country with filthy dirty politics was Senator John McCain. I don't know how many presidential elections you have been around for, but George W. Bush and the rotten to the core Karl Rove, precipitated the change in the political climate in this country. Never before was such hatred assaulted on politicians from one side to another. And by the way....it was not a democratic candidate who put a bullseye on a map of Arizona, it was a Republican Vice presidencial hopeful. Not even during the intensity of the Nixon/Kennedy Race which was pretty ugly has there been such a manifestation of pitting one side against the other. Obama had nothing to do with it. It was started long, long, before he ever left the state house in Illinois.
And then you comment on the rich against the poor. When in the history of this country has a Liberal ever pitted the rich against the poor. Liberals help the poor....remember, that's why they call them "bleeding hearts". It was the Bush Administration who raised taxes on the middle class and gave tax cuts to the wealthiest in our country. Doesn't it bother you to pay as much of a percentage of your income to the Federal government as a person with an Adjusted Gross Income of 1 million dollars? This country was divided long ago. And Obama had nothing to do with it.
I thought he was on a bus tour of those states. Is his bus called Air Force One as well?
Bless her on her journey home.
Working a breakfast shift in a restaurant for more then ten years would age the strongest of woman...
She fed a lot of hungry folks. From her hard work she gave her family a business that belong to them... Rest in peace.
A note: a friend of mine sent me a old link that talked about internet responders working for GPS crossroads during the ACA
Debate.
Judging from some of the responses I guess there are trying to get there quotas up....sellouts!
This bozo is literally the kiss of death to what ever he touches.
look out the liberals will get upset, after all he is their god. LOL
The conservatives god is the 1%, if it ain't money it ain't sheet. Sick SOBs if you ask me.
At least she died of natural causes -- much better than committing suicide because of job loss or medical bills, as would be happening under a Repugnican administration.
Wait a minute .. Obummer Care has the "Death Panels" determining who get what treatments.
They probably would have assessed her at not worthy of any extraordinary health measures because of ther age.
She was a goner either way. My condolences to the family
Oh, you are so gullible.
@DEE
Wow, Sarah Palin sure stuck in your head. She's the one that originally started the death panel talks, and I was surprised that anyone would buy into that fiasco, but a repugnantcan will listen to any lie told to them and believe it as if it were gospel. Foolish foolish people..............
Uhhhhh DUH DEE DEE!!!!!
Insurance companies have been doing that for DECADES. The AHCA (Affordable Health Care Act) is what PREVENTS that.
Did you even TRY to read it?
It is simply AMAZING how many people just flip on the radio, and suck up whatever slime el-Rushbo shovels out. Aren't you embarrassed?
I dont want Obama care. I dont want to pay for lazy people who dont work..the only people who want it are the ones who cant take care of them selves, for one reason or another..mostly due to lazyness and drug use.
If you don't wish to participate in the Affordable Care Act then that is your choice. Try doing some research on your own about all the positives in the act. It sounds as if you are letting the talking heads do all your thinking for you. It has nothing to do with "lazy people who don't work". Don't you think that it is a good thing that an insurance company can't turn a person down due to pre-existing conditions anymore? If you have a catastrophic illness the insurance company can no longer put a cap on your benefits even though you may have been paying the premiums without any measurable use for 20 years, for example? Before, if someone were battling cancer the insurance company would stop coverage after a certain amount. That has caused many people to lose their homes and have to file for bankruptcy because they can no longer afford to pay the huge amount of money it takes to cover their treatments.
Uh Dan, I've got news for you; unless you are bankrupt and paying no taxes you're probably already paying for unemployed, under-employed, and uninsured people who go to emergency rooms for treatment they should be getting at a dr.s office but because dr.s demand payment before care in some cases they have to use hospital e.r. Prior to ObamaCare, those with pre-existing conditions couldn't even get ins. (or else they had to pay an 2 arms, and a leg). Keep in mind the Republicans had control of both house and senate back before Obama was elected in 2008 and they just gave pharmaceutical companies the right to steal from those who could least afford it if they needed medicines. At least now they're offering (?) to help pay for the meds. supposedly.
If you've been paying insurance for 20 years "without any measurable use" than you shouldn't be covered. When are people going to learn that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? How many people are going to skirt paying for insurance until they're near death and cost an insurance company tens of thousands for being too stingy to do the right thing and have insurance and regular doctor's visits all along?
Dan D
You ARE paying for the deadbeats NOW. The people with no insurance that use the ER as healthcare and you are subsidizing them when they DON'T pay. Under the ACA EVERYONE WILL NEED TO CARRY THEIR OWN WEIGHT by being insured.
I really can't understand how so many stupid people can't wrap their tiny little brains around the obvious logic of the bill.
wow, you got that all wrong, or were you just trying to be funny?
And the infantile ghouls spew their hate across the universe. You should be ashamed you soulless parasites.
i guess she should not have had a meal with him,i know i would not have a meal with him
I probly would, but I'd make a few political points to him without spoiling the meal. Might not refer to Democrats as "Demoncats" for that half hour though.
how bout demonbrats
? lol
awww sad for her family.... but obama doesn't give a crap about this woman or her family... he says what is expected of him... he probably was reading off of a cue card,, when he was on the phone....does anyone believe he dialed the number. by now he has forgotten about her....unless the press brings her up,,then he will put on another show of sympathy...
jbnsa, didn't your parents teach you this: If you can't say anything nice don't say anything.
Oh, and I believe Mark Twain who said "It's better to be thought an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt?"
This is not political or religious. This is about a lady who worked at a job until she died. She has a family who loves her. Try some respect. Maybe it will catch on.
he don't give a @!$%# about this poor women, he just wanted the picture.
Well said MN!! jbnsa is an idiot!!
At first when I heard the news I thought it was a joke, but then when I read the articles in the news I was in total shock! My condolences to the family.
We are all going to die after something has happened....that is just how life works. The woman maybe died 4 hours after a blue car passed her, or 3 hours after an ant crawled across her foot, or 2 hours after a bird flew by, or 1 hour after....it is nice to have met the President of US of A. But I think the purpose of this "news" article was to make us think that Obama was in trouble - pitiful journalism.
The article, unfortunately, is abbreviated, and the headline worse. The full article (in the Akron Beacon Journal) talked about this lady, who had retired from running her restaurant because she had had previous heart attacks. Her family called her to tell her that the President was at the restaurant, and would she like to see him, and she came right over. It was too much excitement for her in her frail condition, but both she and her family wanted her to meet the President. It didn't kill her to meet the President, but if she was feeling ill, she probably should have gone to the hospital sooner, but it's hard to tell. Women do not always feel direct chest pain; she said her fingers tingled and she had a little pain.
The President was very gracious to the family. I feel sorry for their loss.
My condolences to the family. But msnbc pulls this cheap shot crap all the time with a vague, sensationalism headline, followed by a shoddily written article. Yeah, from Reuters, okay. For God's sake raise your journalistic standards!
ann's zip city eggs suggest an unforfillent as to economic and political desires; as to those that have eye's for the buck's and political swings............................jff
RIP Ann
President Obama and the DNC see themselves as "a great big pacifier" for the American people.....
many have opened their mouth wide for some binky..... :)
Would that be anything like the Republican party being the pacifier for the wealthy. Big tax breaks along with all the other little extras. Mitt Romney is so out of touch with this country and what it really needs that just the thought of him setting in the White House scares me. Although he won't be the one making any decisions. Yes thanks to our last president many do have to depend on the government for a handout to feed their family's. The Republican right made sure of that. What George Bush Senior did not do, George Bush Jr. came in and finished this country off all in the name of the wealthy.
Voters need to look up an expose written several months ago by a journalist regarding Mr.
Several months ago a political writer did an expose re: Romney & his home state (Michigan) unfortunately it ran on MSN late at night &I've never seen or heard of it again. It was shameful...corruption, manipulation, everything. State take over of cities & citizens specifically in th Benton Harbor & Sand Dune area along Lake Michigan. Poor treatment & lack of consideration for human rights, etc. especially women's. Michigan & the condition its in should scare ALL VOTERS away from this man. Romney ?? NEVER
s
This article is about a lady who died. But if you are getting into politics: Akron, like the rest of the country, has been very hot the last few days, but not everybody has air conditioning. This lady, who had previous heart attacks, may have had heat stress.
But of course, there is "no such thing as global warming." You bet people who say that are out of touch.
