Romney weathers growing media clamor for policy details

Mitt Romney's campaign is weathering increasing media scrutiny of the candidate's stubborn refusal to address major issues on anything but his own terms, threatening to transform a standoff with the media into an issue in itself in the campaign.

Charles Dharapak / AP

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney sidestepped the Supreme Court decision itself in an initial written statement.

The latest example: the presumptive Republican nominee's general refusal to opine directly on today's Supreme Court decision striking down many aspects of Arizona's tough immigration law, but upholding another controversial component.

Romney's statement sidestepped the decision itself in an initial written statement, and turned its scrutiny toward President Obama.

"Today's decision underscores the need for a president who will lead on this critical issue and work in a bipartisan fashion to pursue a national immigration strategy," Romney said. "I believe that each state has the duty -- and the right -- to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law, particularly when the federal government has failed to meet its responsibilities."

Frustration between the Romney campaign and the traveling press pool reached a loggerhead on Monday during a gaggle with traveling press secretary Rick Gorka aboard the campaign's plane. Gorka doggedly refused to detail Romney's position in a 7-minute availability. A partial transcript, per NBC's Garrett Haake:

Q: Is it fair to say that he has no opinion on the Arizona law?

GORKA: Look, again, I'll say it again and again and again for you. The governor understands that states have their own right to craft policies to secure their own borders and to address illegal immigration.

Q: You're not answering -- what does he think about the policy in Arizona? Is it fair to say he has no opinion? You're refusing to give us an answer.

GORKA: Arizona, like many other states in this nation, take it upon themselves to craft policies for their own specific states. Governor has said repeatedly that states are a laboratory of  democracy, what one state crafts may not work in others but ultimately this, again, goes back to the president failing to deliver on his campaign promises. As candidate Obama, he said he would address immigration in the first year and hasn’t and instead put in a stopgap measure four and a half months before the election.

It wasn't until an afternoon fundraiser in -- ironically -- Arizona that Romney addressed the decision more directly, and even still he did so in a circumspect manner.

"I would have preferred to see the supreme Court give more latitude to the states not less. And there are states now under this decision have less authority, less latitude to enforce immigration laws," Romney said before declaring the immigration system a "muddle" for which Obama is to blame. He did not address whether Arizona's particular remedy was one he favored.

The press has started to take note of Romney's availability. He routinely shuns questions on the ropeline after events about the issue du jour, and his press availabilities are few and far between. His interviews are generally scheduled with friendly outlets; the former Massachusetts governor has appeared on only one Sunday morning affairs show beside "Fox News Sunday."

The presmptive Republican challenger to Obama has doggedly refused to offer specifics about Romney's approach toward some of the most consequential issues this year. As we wrote Thursday, Romney is almost exclusively focused on economy, arguably to his political expense if questions about his stances continue to linger.

The Obama campaign is all too happy to encourage reporters' scrutiny of Romney, too. Senior campaign officials said Romney's singular quality is "evasiveness," and the president himself almost seemed to take a subtle shot at Romney on Monday in New Hampshire.

"I will always tell you where I stand. I will always tell you what I believe," he said at a rally.

Romney's previous political experience seems to inform his caution. He drew on his experience as a Senate candidate in 1994 in an interview with the conservative Weekly Standard, in which Romney said that going out on a limb and expressing his support for eliminating the Department of Education. Democrats subsequently turned that position against Romney.

But the countervailing pressures reflect the types of campaigns both Obama and Romney wish to run. Team Obama wishes to turn the election into a choice, and Romney limits that when he doesn't speak to extraneous issues. Alternatively, Obama, as an incumbent, has an ample record from which Romney can cherrypick items to target.

It's not as though the charge that Romney is somehow opaque is a new one; moreso, it can prove sometimes to be a smart electoral strategy. His opponents from the right and the left have been accusing Romney of being a political chameleon -- on abortion, gun rights, immigration, and so on -- for the better part of two decades. It's what made the Etch A Sketch flap this spring such a resonant attack: it played into a core vulnerability of Romney's that crosses party lines.

The question for Romney has become whether this is a strategy he can ride all the way to election. If he and his campaign team stay so singularly focused on the economy and avoid entanglements over outside controversies, can they shrug off the media's protests?

A few examples of issues Mitt Romney is evading:

"1. Romney won’t say whether he would undo Obama’s decision to end deportations of DREAM-eligible immigrants.

2. Romney won’t say whether he’d support the Paycheck Fairness Act. Romney repeatedly dodged questions about whether he’d support the Paycheck Fairness Act, a bill to crack down on wage discrimination and close the wage gap between men and women. His campaign didn’t respond to five requests by the conservative Washington Times seeking his stance on the bill.

3. Romney won’t specify which tax loopholes he’d close. Asked yesterday which tax deductions he would eliminate to offset his massive proposed tax-cuts for the rich, Romney refused to offer any specifics on a plan that he has admitted is so vague it cannot even be scored...

4. Romney won’t say which federal agencies he’d eliminate. At a private fundraiser, Romney reportedly told donors he would eliminate or combine “a lot of departments in Washington,” but that he was “probably not going to lay out just exactly which ones are going to go.” Why? Because he feared telling the voters his plans before the election might hurt his political chances, just as it did in his 1994 Senate race.

5. Romney won’t say whether he supports the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Romney’s campaign refused to say whether he would have signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a law that helps women hold employers accountable for discriminating in the pay practices based on gender.

6. Romney won’t say whether he’d support full reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. Offering only general support for renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, Romney would not specify whether he supported the bipartisan Senate version or the GOP House rolllback bill.

7. Romney won’t say whether say whether he’d eliminate the “carried interest” tax break for private equity partners. Romney’s campaign has refused to answer questions about whether he supports eliminating the “carried interest” tax break for private equity partners, even when asked directly....” (excerpts from ThinkProgress)"

It's quite obvious that Backhouse wants all the answers from Romney, but ran through 2008 with eyes closed. Define hope and change. Define yes we can. Show me the transcripts of Obama's college career. Explain to me why Obama and Michelle LOST their law licenses. They didn't surrender them, they lost them. Go after Romney for things he's not defining, but completely give Obama a pass on all issues... I can see why you want to vote for Obama... Liberals are blind.

Can't the libs understand that a person running for president doesn't have enough information to actually make policy statements. Look at President Obama, he promised to throw out so many Bush policies and we are still at GITMO, still have the Patriot Act, the Iraq war ended on Bush's terms (not Obama's), we escalated the war in Afghanistan. So please tell us how Mr. Romney could do any worse then the failure we currently have in the White House.

"MITT ROMNEY: We'll-- we'll look at that-- we'll look at that setting as we-- as we reach that."
Thus far, that's all we've heard about anything Mr. Romney plans: Vague, nonspecific, vacuous emptiness.

Brian -- I looked up your link to the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission. I am not here to call you names -- simply explain what you don't understand about law licenses and the practice of law. I am an attorney so have a tiny bit of knowledge in this area. When you do an attorney search on the site as I assume you did, you see the following for both the President and the First Lady:

Illinois Registration Status: Voluntarily inactive and not authorized to practice law

Public Record of Discipline and Pending Proceedings: None

Many people choose to become voluntarily inactive when they no longer live or practice in a state for the duration of the sabbatical. While on inactive status you do not have to take the abundance of continuing legal education courses and you do not have to pay for the extremely expensive malpractice insurance. You cannot practice law during this time but at any time when you are ready to begin practicing again, you purchase your malpractice insurance, resume taking CLE courses, and pay a fee to be switched to Active. You, I am also sure, noticed that it says right on the pages that there is no record of discipline proceedings (i.e. there is not reason to pull their license). I sincerely hope this clarifies the ins and outs of law licenses. I realize it doesn't come from Fox News but it is factually based. If you need any further clarification feel free to post a comment...of course a mere "thank you and I was wrong to allow my hate to cloud reality in this instance" would suffice. Seriously, everyone, I am so tired of the hate on all sides.

Every time Romney avoids answering direct questions from the media, the less voters will support him. But before we even get to policy details, how about some tax returns?

According to David Cay Johnston, Romney’s refusal to release his tax returns indicates that Romney has “been thinking about this since before Bain” but the American people deserve to learn:

Did Romney buy illegal, gray-market tax shelters?

Was Romney audited in a way that the government found serious problems?

Did Romney make use of offshore vehicles in order to defer or not pay taxes?

Did Romney take advantage of things that were not caught in audits by the IRS?

If Romney’s returns are clean, if there’s nothing to worry about, then why not just provide them?

Can't the libs understand that a person running for president doesn't have enough information to actually make policy statements.

Care to elaborate?

Why can't a candidate have knowledge of current events? Don't they watch the news and see how current policies are shaping the nation? Can't they from that state how they would do it differently? Saying just that you would do it differently isn't answering the questions at all.

It's a week from month seven of the year 2012. Only four months and a week from the election and we have no idea what Romney's plans are. If vague were a way of life, he would be living it.

Are we even going to find out before September who his VP pick is?

How can you cast an educated vote for someone when you have no idea how they intend to fix things as they see fit? Never mind if the ideas are good or bad, but rather that their are ideas to begin with.

Snopes is owned by Soros...

This is it in a nutshell. Wikipedia, FactCheck, MediaMatters, along with mainstream media (expect FOX Noise--riiiight) cannot be trusted! And that goes for so-called experts, the CBO, economists, and most of all scientists. The good people of the United States can only rely on Hate Radio, conspiracy websites like WorldNetDaily, or better yet chain Emails from unknown origin for the truth!

Think about it. You hate the FDA. Would you prefer to take your chances against e. Coli? You hate the EPA. Would you prefer to take you chances and allow fracking near your water source? You hate the medical community. Snake oil salesmen, now that's much better.

This is what happens when the Fairness Doctrine is abolished and FOX Noise can pretend to be a news outlet. This is what happens when our education system is decimated and students no longer learn what a credible source is, or research methodology, or empirical methodology. The Flat Earth Society is leading the way.

The rightwing is taking our country off a cliff. Throw the Teapublicans out!

If this is my last election, I want my vote to mean something. Sorry, GOP side, I can't figure out Mr. Romney's position on some issues. I do not just go to sources on left - I try and read all views. From all I gather from my reading, I keep seeing the fall of the Greek Empire (try reading history folks, may learn something). After what we have witnessed since Obama took office, your statement is completely absurd. Your party has brought COMPLETE DISHONOR to the office of president. You have allowed yourself to be polarized to a point of ignorant of the facts that are as plain as the nose on your face. Most americans see it, why don't you? Hungrymoose

The deficit increased dramatically under Reagan. It continued to go up under Bush 1. It finally balanced out by the end of Clinton's term, but Bush 2 wasted no time at all raising it. Obama has raised it considerably, but it was necessary according to most economists (you can debate that if you like). Reagan raised it because of a bad economy, as did Bush 1. Bush 2 raised it to pay for tax cuts that he thought would be a good idea even though we were at war. What could possibly make you think Romney will be different?

Romney, the little we have gotten from him, plans to cut taxes even more. He plans to increase the budget for defense. And he says he will balance the budget. What does this mean?

It means he is either going to completely gut social programs, including social security and Medicare or there is absolutely no way he can possibly not raise the deficit considerably. Most likely, even with gutting social programs it won't balance the budget. You do the math. If there is another way let me know. I suppose you think with the taxes so low that the economy will jump so fast it will make up the difference. If so, where's the evidence? It hasn't worked in the past.

It seems that Mitt will only spell out anything smacking of details to those at his ultra-rich gatherings of donors, i.e. the one in FL where he was overheard giving much more specifics than he's ever given to the press, or his recent little invitation-only big bucks soiree in Deer Valley, UT.

He's more than willing to spill his gut to anyone with enough $$$ who will support him, i.e. Adelson, but not to the rank and file American voters who he wants votes from.

Sorry Mitt...you change your position on issues more often than a chameleon changes colors.

Can you liberals stop quoting Think Progress and start Thinking For Yourselves?

President Obama's immigration policy is to NOT enforce federal immigration laws, which violates his Constitutional responsibility. The White House web site says that "Under Article II of the Constitution, the President is responsible for the execution and enforcement of the laws created by Congress." It does not say the President is responsible for the execution and enforcement of the laws that he likes and will help him satify his base in order to get reelected. President Obama did this with Defense of Marriage Act, which was passed overwhelmingly on a bipartisian basis and signed by a Democrat, President Clinton.

Where are Romney's tax returns? The Obamas have released their tax returns every year he has been in office. Romney on the other hand doesn't want the American voter to know how much money he makes, where he hides it (offshore) and he definitely does NOT want you to know how much tax he pays on his income. He does not want you to know that the average tax payer pays a higher tax rate than Romney. He does not want you to know the number of deductions he takes and what he takes the deductions for ( 30,000 dollars a year for his dancing horse?). Romney has asked for and received an extension on the date he must file and you know he will ride that extension up to the election if he can. Demand that this slime ball release his tax returns as other candidates have done!!! Just what is he hiding?

The truth is, it takes work to be a liberal. There is no more undefined position in politics. No one really knows exactly what they stand for, big government, big spending, tax increases, free birth control, gay marriage, wind power, solar, and singing Kumbaya. Liberals take positions based upon the direction of the wind, which is exactly how Obama leads on any issue. So realistically when you stand for everything, you actually stand for nothing.

So lets see, Obama stands for jobs, just not the ones like the Keystone Pipeline. But Solyndra is fine, because he was able to pay off some of his cronies before they went belly up. Drilling for oil or natural gas is fine, just not on any federal land or jurisdiction. We are now going to stop deporting illegals that fit into the mold that we had not been deporting anyway. Laws are only guidelines to Obama, and those he doesn't like will not be enforced regardless of the oath he took.

I guess when liberals espouse hypocrisy, not only is there no mechanism for accountability, there is no hope for real change. Obama ran on an incoherent message, and his presidency can only be described as a temper tantrum. Never has there been someone that acts less presidential then Obama. The nation has been treated to an endless parade of excuses, blame, and lack of results. Leaders overcome the obstacles, they do not make excuses for not being able to get around them.

After Obama's last speech in Cleveland, even the liberal talking heads were saying, "Quit giving us rhetoric and tell us what you are planning to DO." He was dealt a hand and has played it terribly. His "divide and conquer" mentality (a la Saul Alinsky) hasn't worked very well to govern as president and now he has NO IDEA what to do, so he just doubles down on the hatred and condescension. I've never seen a president who has declared war on more groups than this one has. He is at war with the church, Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, the republicans in congress, the wealthy, Wall Street, "big business", oil companies, insurance companies, taxpayers, the states who want to protect their borders, et al..... He really is "The Great Divider", and our country can never start to heal until he is gone from office.

Obama has been the great AWOL president, doing little but traveling around the country to criticize and blame others. Oh, and to play golf. Somehow, he's found the time to play over 100 rounds of golf in the last 3 years. It must be nice. Wish I had that kind of time.

If Romney attempts to move even one inch to the center, he'll lose his base and all those Teagaggers, but he won't get any Obama Voters to fill the gap, and the further Romney moves to the Reicht the more he loses traditional Republicans.

He also said he wanted to build a wall. Some kind of a wall, as he put it. My first thought on that was, who's gonna pay for it? Does this guy think we're all stupid? Guess so. He'll see how stupid we are in November when he loses.

Hey Flip Flop....., you forgot to mention YOUR fearless leader's (Odumbo)propensity to vote "present" while a member of the Senate. Guess he was rather averse to taking a principled stand on issues that were controversial. AND IT SHOWS.

            #2.23 - Tue Jun 26, 2012 10:15 AM EDT

Hey starboard, with that "YOUR fearless leader" comment are you implying that Obama is NOT your president? Then GTFO of my country and my politics, because as a foreigner your opinions don't matter in this discussion. Or are you an American citizen? Then show some respect, because your grade school name-calling only makes you come across as an unpatriotic, immature jerk. I didn't like Bush but I respected the office and like it or not he was still my president.

Most, if not all senators simply vote "present" on items that come up at different times during their tenure. Unless you can somehow demonstrate that Obama markedly did so more than his peers, you've got nothing but an empty right-wing talking point, AND IT SHOWS.

Great response Mitt. Keep the focus on Obama's inability to correctly govern this nation. Expose for all to see how Obama has completely neglected the borders of this nation.

I will wait for the catcalls from the liberals... they seem to want our borders porous because of the poor underprivileged non-citizens that want to come here to take our jobs, live off the government, send their children to our already overcrowded schools and occupy our emergency rooms for free medical care.

No Brian, It would be big business that wants porous borders and have them take our jobs. It's called "cheap labor" And when big business hears the word cheap labor, their eyes light up and, they get a big boner!!!

Every election year the GOP/Tea Bangers brings up Border Security when they are desperate for votes. This and abortion shows the republicans are very desperate again.

Inarticulate statement. Republican citizens are always concerned about our porous borders. It's the democrats that could give a rats ass about the problem.

Talk about how democrats are so against fighting illegal immigration, it wasn't 10 minutes after the ruling this afternoon that Janet Napolitano issued a directive to FBI agents in Arizona to not assist local law enforcement in any suspected immigration finding. I could hear Obama in the background going WAAAAA WAAAAA WAAAAAA!

Romney says he can fix the economy because of his business background. Well -- over the last 80 years we've had 2 businessmen in the white House. One was Herbert Hoover and the other was George W. Bush. What kind of shape was the economy in when those two left office??

The only ideas Romney has are tax cuts for the richest of the rich and more deregulation -- the same things that caused our economic crash on the first place.

Sad to say, that hasn't happened in the past. On that, nothing will change. But the first thing every cop i've been pulled over by (and that's more than a couple) has asked me is for identification. And i'm definitely not brown, short or speak Spanish. The question for Romney has become whether this is a strategy he can ride all the way to election.

Nope, just until the debates so the whole country can hear first hand what Romney believes without the great filter of the MSM and the Obama campaign. Great strategy Mitt.

Best be careful on what you wish for. The debates may be Mitt's Waterloo. Remember the primary debates, right? He kind of looked undecided on many issues and was pushed around by some lightweights. Although you may hate President Obama more than the devil himself, he is certainly not a lightweight at the game and can very well destroy this man in front of the nation. I personally welcome them.

                    Great strategy Mitt.

No, it's the only strategy, if you must call it something. An untethered Mitt might have already self-destructed. You forget his bumbling in the primaries just a few short months ago, don't you? His handlers haven't, and are not about to let him go around shooting his big gob off at every opportunity. But, as the saying goes, you can run but can't hide.

I have said this before and I will continue to keep saying it until the Conservatives understand completely. Romney is a YES MAN. He will say what the "establishment" wants him to say while at the same time throwing pieces of bread at the far right just to keep them interested. As an independent, I have watched him closely, looking for ANYTHING that I can believe and yet he hasn't said ANYTHING remotely resembling policy or even a HINT of where he stands on any subject. All I've heard is it's the economy and Obama has failed as a President. NEWS FLASH, There is more to the Presidency that just the economy. If that's all he knows(or claims to know) then he as already failed as a candidate.

Conservatives take note of your so called "Savior". If you are not rich or part of the 1%, you will be gutted just like the rest of the 99%. Mitt is talking the same "I have a plan" talk that most republicans talk just to get in office only to do what they are told by the establishment. The reason they don't give specifics is because there ARE no specifics. It can be said for both Candidates, be careful who you vote for. In this case, you know what you're getting with Obama, Romney, not so much. In my opinion, I would vote for Ron Paul before Romney and I can't stomach his Rhetoric.

I have a suggestion - Lets all stop payment on our mortages if they reduce our safety nets.

Open an account at a credit union screw the banks out of I'm guessing about 10-12 months of payments sound right.

We'd bankrupt them before the forth month.....their cash flow would be crap after the first two.

The best part....There is nothing they could do to stop us.

The foreclosures would tie up the courts for 7-10 years!

They'd be begging us for a deal.

He cannot provide details becuse he has none, and if he did he would lose all voters that have an IQ above 110.

I don't think it would make much of a difference, since he doesn't have any voters with an IQ over 110, to lose in the first place......

GT, that was just snark by sam. You know, how the GOP/TP has been working so hard passing real important issues like naming post offices, etc. You have to consider how many days they actually work before they get a vacation. I believe it's something like 3 days a week for 2 weeks and then off a week. Ha! ;-)

All Politicians are nothing more than Political Puppets. Every move they make is controlled by the Lobbyist, Special Interest, and the Self Righteous.

Half of all money raised by Politicians (Including Super PAC’S) should go towards the National Debt and Charity. Why don't we "Tax" the Millions of dollars that they collect for their Campaigns?

They should also pay for their own Security out of these Campaign Funds.

Sure, I wish the electorate was adult enough to let politicians lay it all out, but how many politicians are going to get elected by telling us the truth - the U.S. is overspending, has over spent, has over promised and now we must cut back spending and raise more revenue (taxes)? VOTE FOR ME! Fat chance in the U.S. where 47% don't even pay taxes - they just take.

Obama got elected by promising hope and change with no details. My guess is that Mitt's best bet is to stay the course with no details - expecially when the mainstream media has their knives sharpened to slice and dice.

IF I was the Republican nominee I would be skeptical of give too much detail. Most of the media will pull things out of context, exaggerate, leave out relevant details. make false implications , distort things so I really don't blame him.

I would love to know where you are getting your info regarding 47% not paying taxes as that is sounds very far fetched:

If you work, you pay taxes(unless of course you get paid under the table). IF at the end of the year you get a return back, then you've paid more than you had too in taxes. NOW if you rephrase your comment to state that 47% don't pay taxes AFTER their deductions when they file, then it could be believable.

@Sense - 47% paid no federal income tax in 2009. It was 46.4% in 2011.

Here's a tip for you. NBC is a REAL & GENUINE news organization. It is no secret that they lean left but unlike Murdoch's joke of a "news" organization, they don't make their own "facts" up. If you and Willardo think he can go month after month without giving straight answers to the press, you've got another thing coming. I'm curious, have you ever checked out Willardo's past history in Massachussetts??? There's not a topic under the sun that this weasel has not changed positions on.

CitizenBain...Okay, I'll tell you. They were intolerant. Up until 1978 "The curse of Cain" was official doctrine of the LDS church. Simply stated, people of color bore "The curse of Cain", and could not hold the position of priesthood within the church. The LDS church has a long, established history of changing position...racism, polygamy, etc., and then saying "Oh, that was just folklore, not doctrine" when mountains of evidence exist proving otherwise. Gosh...now that I think about it, that whole "changing positions and denying you ever thought otherwise" actually explains Mitt!

Romney is not running on his religion, so making an issue of it serves no purpose other than to exhibit spite and intolerance. It makes you no better than the frothing righties who still spout the "Obama's a seekrit Mooslim!" line. Be better than that.

PS: That "curse" stuff is NOT particular to LDS, either -- that's from the Bible, so ALL Christian faiths are on the hook for that one. Seems to me I'd rather have a religion that changes for the better with the times and adopts positive social developments than one that refuses to change at all. Oh, and last but not least, it was Ham, not Cain. I mean this in all sincerety with no snark intended: you should avoid touting opinions as facts, particularly on subjects in which you're not well-versed; all you end up doing is giving the other side ammunition to make you look like a fool.

JERRY: Do not underestimate the power of BIG MONEY that this bastard has behind him. They are going to flood the airwaves with hit jobs on Democrats like you've never seen. Romney is bought and paid for by these people who have a vested interest in him. He is nothing more than their lackey and he is there to do their bidding.

Couple that with voter suppression laws throughout the country and it's going to be a close run thing thought I still think we can prevail.

Right, the smart ones of us are voting for another recession with Romney.

All for the rich and nothing for America.

Then the rich are spending millions and millions to convince you to vote against yourself. The rich republicans can't pay a small surcharge to create jobs, but they sure do have the hundred of millions to give to republicans to lie to you.

Then you want to pretend republicans bankrupting Ameirca for more and permanent tax cuts for Romney are the smart ones.

As for a recession, regardless if Romney is elected or if Obama is re-elected, the next POTUS is dealing with a very sluggish economy.

That just proves how brainwashed you are. No one is taking anything away from anyone. It's called taxation and has been a part of this country since it's inception. In recent years, the disparity between what wealthier people actually pay is shrinking. The Bush tax cuts were supposed to encourage those people to invest more in this country, which in turn would create jobs. Well guess what, that hasn't happened. These folks decided to keep the money or invest it somewhere else. They've gotten richer than ever and the middle class has taken a real bath because of it. Now, you want us to elect someone who is one of them? Who are you trying to kid? And what do you think is in it for you? You've been manipulated by people that wouldn't spit on you. You know that, don't you? And btw, the Robin Hood legend has been proven wrong. He did not steal from the rich and give to the poor. He stole from the rich and kept it for himself and his merry men. Oh, i'm sure maid Marion got a little of it too, iykwim ;-)

Tonybeerm - I am glad to have a rational discussion with you without namecalling or sniping.

It's called taxation and has been a part of this country since it's inception.

                                                  No, it really has not.

According to the History of the Income Tax, the federal income tax was first enacted in 1862 to support the Union's Civil War effort. It was eliminated in 1872, revived in 1894, then declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court the following year. In 1913, the 16th Amendment to the Constitution made the income tax a permanent fixture in the U.S. tax system.

So in reality, federal income tax has just been with us about 100 - not 200+ years!

The top 10% of tax payers pay between 60 - 70% of the federal income tax depending on which of the last ten years you look at. That seems like a lot to me. How much more do you want them to pay? Tax DOES take money from someone - money that is theirs.

Finally, you speak with such apparent certainty about how the so-called Bush tax cuts were used. Let's be rational. You and I have no way of knowing in this huge economy how or where that money flowed or the magnitude of the impact that it did or did not have. Who knows, without it, maybe we would have gone into a depression earlier and still be there. We can never know what actually happens to that money. The policy is based upon economic theory. We can disagree on whose theory we believe in.

Romney is coming across as dumb. Maybe he should just think about it as a business plan, put it out there for people to see and think about over the next few months. The more the press reports his evasiveness, the more public distrust he is going to earn.

No, he isn't evasive. He has put forth several ideas. Take jobs, for one. He wants to create tax breaks for businesses that hire employees as against a unilateral tax break for all businesses, some of which just hoard the money and don't put anything back into the economy. What has Romney said he will do for jobs?

And how much did Whorebama's shovel-ready jobs cost us per job and in total without producing any jobs that lasted more than a few weeks? ALL of the few jobs that were "created" by the big O in Kansas were parttime and lasted just a few weeks at the most. Once the pathetic jobs were done, the "employed" were back on unemployment, food stamps, etc.

As if repeating the republicans lies creates job.

In Europe they chose the republicans austerity plan. Are you surprised their policies have created double-dipped recessions?

President Obama pushed a stimulus and as much as the republicans like to pretend it did not do anything, America is not in a double-dipped recession like we would be if we had followed the republicans policies.

Republicans never let the truth get in the way of a good lie.

Is your goal to destroy America for tax breaks for Romney and his rich friends?

If you vote for a republican it is.

I couldn't agree more Americans First! The republican party has gone so far to the right I cannot for the life of me understand why ANYONE would vote for Willard or ANY OTHER republican. I mean think about it:

                                                    • why would ANY woman vote for them? Repubs want to take away a woman's right to choose & limit women's access to contraceptives. Republicans also don't support women receiving the same pay for the same work or a woman's right to pursue legal recourse for wage discrimination.
                                                    • why would ANY gay/lesbian vote for them? Repubs, by and large, are opposed to marriage equality, civil unions, and gay couples adopting children. The religious right doesn't simply disagree with members of the LGBT community, repubs believe that gays and lesbians are SINNERS bound for hell.
                                                    • why would ANY Latino or a person of any other ethnic background vote for them? Republicans want to build a mile-high electrified fence at the border and make living conditions so unbearable that undocumented immigrants (or "illegals" as they like to call them) choose to "self-deport".
                                                    • why would ANY young person vote for them? Repubs have shown a complete lack of concern for the education of our nation's youth by their unwillingness to keep student loan interest rates low. Paul Ryan's "kill Medicare" budget, which Willard calls "mah-velous, dah-ling", also makes drastic cuts to Federal Pell Grants that countless students depend on to obtain a college education.
                                                    • why would ANY person of middle class or lower economic standing vote for them? Romney and the republicans have shown time and time again that they favor corporations and the wealthiest Americans. Repubs want to "fix" the economy ("fix", as in RIG to benefit the 1%) by enacting even MORE tax cuts for big business and millionaires/billionaires and by doing away with financial regulations. The republicans are "banking" on the fact that voters are either uninformed or suffering a terrible case of amnesia, since it is common knowledge that the Great Republican Recession of 2008 was caused primarily by DUH-bya's unfunded tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 and the de-regulation of the markets/financial sector. As if this alone wasn't enough to prove that republicans are anti-middle class, they embraced the Paul Ryan Budget Plan, which not only benefits the rich by cutting programs that are essential to the middle class and working poor it also drastically INCREASES the deficit due to trillions of dollars in tax cuts for millionaires & billionaires that are NOT paid for.

While I could go on and on citing groups of people who would be CRAZY to vote for Romney & the repubs, that really isn't necessary because the few examples I listed would encompass a vast majority of the electorate. Basically, the only demographic group that benefits from republican policies is old white guys, aka the GOP (Greedy Old People). If voters truly educated themselves before the election in November, NO republican would win an election at ANY LEVEL! Regrettably, most voters will continue to believe the republican talking points, outright lies and wacky conspiracy theories propagated by right-wing talk radio and Faux News, and many of them will vote for Romney (who hasn't said anything they disagree with because he HASN'T SAID ANYTHING). As my father used to say, they will "cut off their noses to spite their faces".

The same can be said for all Republicans. The only way left, to keep big money fanatics from buying America at the ballet box, is to refuse to vote for any and all Republicans. Republican dogma is: It does not matter what they do against the American people for the benefit of the one percent. To get elected, it only matters what they say during the election.
