I am very happy about this move. It is the perfect example of the values this country was founded upon. Thank you, Mr. Obama, for upholding the spirit of the nation and for making a decision that demonstrates human capability for compassion and understanding and for standing up for all the young people who some would punish for the crimes of others. A great many of us would not be here if punishing the son for the crimes of the father had always been the policy of this country, including myself. I was born and raised in this country, and did not speak another language until I was 22 years old. If I had been deported because my mother or my grandfather had broken the law, I would have had nowhere to go because Neither of them have contact with family "back home."

The draw back is that this not only doesn't change the current illegal alien problem, it may enhance it. This has happened before and apparently it will continue to happen in the future because of actions like President Obama and other presidents before have done.

The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin giving work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of a growing Latino electorate that has opposed administration deportation policies.

The administration's decision will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants. Two senior administration officials described the plan to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity ahead of its expected announcement Friday.

Illegal immigrants will avoid deportation and be eligible for work permits if they arrived in the U.S. before age 16, are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED, or served in the military.

If this is what the president and the administration wants fine if they take it one step further. If a person is here illegally and has meet those requirements and is under age 21, they probably are living with parents who are also here illegally. So, the person under 21 should have to disclose who they live with and if they are indeed illegal and they also meet all of the new requirements (lived here 5 years or more/no criminal record, they would then have 12 months from identification to pass a test that proves they can effectively read/write/speak English. If they are able to pass that test, have active employment and a desire to stay, they would become U.S. citizens.

I have thought for many years what would be a more practical solution to our problem that doesn't require more border patrols, new laws that encourage illegals from coming here under some new type of amnesty, unreasonable fences/walls or later problems with people coming across our borders illegally.

Make a change to the wording of the 14th amendment. Change the wording so that no one is granted U.S. citizenship simply by being born in this country unless: both parents of the child born in the U.S. are current U.S. citizens. That alone would prevent tens of thousands of people who cross our borders just in time to give birth so that not only does the child get to stay, but almost always the mother is allowed to stay to care for the child. A mother alone often isn't able to care for the child and work, so often times the father then comes here to support the family and we now have a minimum of 2 more illegals because of birth rights granted under the 14th amendment.

This is a slap in the face to every American looking for a job right now. It's a slap in the face to every LEGAL immigrant who followed the law and stood and line and a swift kick in the butt to every unemployed LEGAL immigrant who followed the law and stood and line.

It's incentive for millions more to enter the country illegally in anticipation of being rewarded for it.

Just because the law of land land calls for one on the first Tuesday of November? Har, har, har! Laws are meant to be enforced or ignored all at the sitting President's will!

Well...I had been on the fence as far as whom I was going to vote for this November. While I am no fan of Romney, as everything he has claimed to do while in the White House will ultimately destroy the middle class in favor of the 1%'ers....I have been thoroughly disappointed in Obama these past 3 1/2 years as far as his lack of backbone in the fight with Boehner, Cantor, McConnell and the rest of Party of No who are hellbent on taking this country back 200 years.

But, this ruling, Mr. Obama....this may have been the last straw! The biggest "hot button" issue in my mind is illegal immigration, and this ruling pretty much tells every young person here illegally that even though they, or their parents, broke federal law by coming into this country, taking work from Americans, sending American money home where it buys so much more, getting into schools already overcrowded, on the taxpayers' dime, draining social resources not designed to care for them....they are NOT considered common criminals, not treated as thieves, no, instead they are given amnesty from any crimes and rewarded for their criminal behavior!!

I don't believe I'm alone in my disdain for this ruling. For every Latino vote this ruling may win for Obama in November, there will be five to ten votes he would lose by this ultimate "anti-America" policy being enacted. Amazing how "knee-jerk" reactions are based in very little knowledge. To address the most obvious complaint:

To get a "work visa," you have to already have a job... Your employer must be willing to sponsor you.... and it is for a limited duration and that specific job. (All of this can be found on the immigration website.) There will be no "aliens" taking jobs.

These are not "anchor babies" as the administration was very careful to exclude "amnesty" or even use this as a path to citizenship. These are people who, in some cases, didn't even know they were not Americans. They were brought here as young children by their parents. They do not speak any other language; they do not know any other way of life. They consider themselves Americans. Had their parents been sent home a decade or more ago, this would not be an issue. But immigration really was not a priority for the previous administration.

A work visa does not allow a person to vote. So, the claim that the administration is "importing voters" with this measure is patently ridiculous. Anyone who votes Democrat will certainly continue to do so if they are smart enough to at least find out what this measure actually means. Those who's battle-cry is "deport all brown people!" was never going to vote for him to begin with.

Sophie-472322-608038 Illegals can vote in most states. Unless states adopt a "valid ID" requirement at the polling stations, many illegals have been able to vote for many years now. Many states try to adopt the ID requirements but the Fed blocks them by the threat of reduced federal aid.

Obama's circumventing of procedure regarding enforcement of the laws on the books is unconstitutional. He doesn't have the authority to authorize breaking the law. I do believe immigration laws need to be updated and amended to address the pressing issues of illegal immigration. The right way to do that is to work with congress to change the laws, not issue an executive authorization to violate the law. First of all, this is a matter of prosecutorial discretion. All laws require two main elements: an actus reas (the act) and a mens rea (intent to commit). The feds simply cannot prove mens rea under the criteria cited by the Department of Homeland Security in these cases. A child brought into this country by her parents does not hold the requisite intent to commit the crime. Therefore, she cannot be charged.

What the Obama Administration did here is completely and entirely legal and "constitutional." Anyone thinking otherwise has a lot of learning to do. The OPUS is the executive branch. The executive branch carries out the laws written by the legislative branch (congress). Part of that power involves choosing how best to carry out those laws. In this instance, the executive branch has found a way to better streamline the enforcement of immigration laws. This makes the process more efficient. Excellent post Angelica, even though I am neither a Democrat or a Republican, you pretty much nailed my sentiment on the head. I do definitly lean towrds the right of center, my only left leaning agenda is healthcare. But that is tainted by working out of this country for many years and seeing other healthcare vehicles utilized elsewhere.

Also, there are no other benefits that apply for these illegal immigrants with work visas. They have to pay for their Obamacare. They have to pay into their own Medicare and Medicad-type funds with the same scenario - when the funds run out, the funds run out. They are NOT ENTITLED to the same benefits as citizens and DEFINITELY not entitled to benefits FUNDED by citizens.

So instead of 10 young people fighting for a job it will be 20 more fighting for the same job.

I would like to see the US use the same kind of immigration laws that are used all over the world. In most countries you must prove that you have an income and trade before you can immigrate. Please don't recite the poem on the base of The Statue of Liberty, when that was written it was a different world. In almost every other country, if you are an illegal you are deported no questions asked.

Can someone explain to me the benefit to having paid for these kids education only to deport them? Let them use the education we gave them to work and pay taxes.

They did not break the law. Their parents did. Being carried over a border at age 3 does not make you a criminal. They have done nothing wrong.

The answer is to firm up the borders and develop a policy that makes sense and can be enforced in regards to people who are already here.

Even if you do not believe they should be allowed to stay, can you at least not have some compassion for a teenager who was brought here when he was a baby illegally and may have been sent back to a country he has not been to since he was a baby and knows no one. When the Obama administration also makes a mandate that for every work permit they grant for an anchor child they will give one to another immigrant who has been on the waiting list for years, THEN I will believe he is trying to create productive American immigrants. He should be rewarding the people that apply for citizenship the correct way. Instead he is showing these young people that they are entitled to have it handed to them because their parents broke the law. To me, there are 2 very different issues. How to stop people from coming here illegally and what to do with those who are already here. The second group poses far more problems.

I agree that we need a policy that can be enforced-but that policy needs to be practical. It needs to take into consideration the people who are already here and what benefit they offer in terms of labor (because they do offer a benefit as evidenced in places where illegal immigrants left and farms went to waste. ) It needs to take into consideration who will raise the children who are citizens if their parents are deported. It needs to take into consideration the money that has been spent educating these kids, and weigh that against the value of sending them back having not recooped one penny of tax income in exchange for that education. It then needs to make sure that no new people come here illegally, and if they do-are dealt with swiftly to end this cycle.

The law is the law. I live in a state where wearing a seat belt is mandatory. My grandparents were killed in a car accident (hit broadside by an ambulance that was speeding, ignoring traffic safety laws and all to get a person with a broken arm - not life threatening injury in the least - to a hospital five minutes faster). My grandmother was wearing her seat belt - my grandfather was not. My grandmother was basically sheared in half because her seat belt offered her no where to go when the force of the ambulance pushed her door over her seat. My grandfather would have survived - he was thrown clear of the car when it was hit - had it not been for the large oak tree that he hit as he was thrown clear.

I won't wear a seat belt. A seat belt is not safe in a side collision - period. The fact that the government has legislated that I wear a "safety" device that is useful in 80% of accidents and a total f-ing hazard in 20% of accidents just torques me off like you wouldn't believe.

When I'm pulled over by a police officer and they hand me a ticket for failing to wear a seat belt - I pay it and never argue the ticket. See... while I don't agree with the law, I recognize that it is the law.

Illegal immigrants are exactly that. Illegal. Their presence in this country is an abomination to every immigrant who came to this country and followed the proper channels to get here. There's no such thing as "slightly illegal". It is - or it isn't. Our laws say that if you're here illegally and you're caught - you get deported back to your country of origin. Arizona has it right.

I agree that the Latino vote is important (every bit as important as the African American vote - or the Asian vote - or the Caucasian vote... you name it). But if Latinos truly are Americans, then they should work to improve the law - not cheer a man on for circumventing it.

Let them work legally-meaning they will not be paid under the table and will pay taxes. Or, have them stay here illegally until they have a baby who is a citizen and then we look the other way. They may be caught and deported before that happens, which is unlikley, but still will then require a trial (paid for by the tax payers.)

Option 1 makes the most sense from a practical standpoint to me-followed by a swift changing of laws to deal with how to approach those who are already here and prevent, for real, more from coming in.

I had no idea I was 'illegal' because my birth certificate had both my parents names on it--it is customary one a child has been adopted that the adoptive parents get a legal birth certificate for the adopted child with them listed as the child's parents, and the judge will only grant that if they have seen a legal adoption decree. When my parents obtained this paperwork they submitted both the adoption decree, my BC, and my SS number. The adoption paper was the only missing item.

I had school records since Pre-K and my parents tax records for the last five years prior to their deaths that could prove I was their dependent.

I had no criminal record, had just graduated private high school on the honor roll and had a scholarship to an art college to become police sketch artist;

Would have passed the English test easily since no other languages were spoken in the house, though I had tutoring in both French and Spanish

Did not have active employment, having just graduated high school not yet gotten a job

Did want to stay.

So since I didn't fulfill all those criteria you mentioned above, I should not be considered a candidate for citizenship? Even considering that Id been considered a citizen for 18 years of my life nd the only reason I was declared 'illegal' was because USCIS lost a piece of paper?

Make a change to the wording of the 14th amendment. Change the wording so that no one is granted U.S. citizenship simply by being born in this country unless: both parents of the child born in the U.S. are current U.S. citizens.

Okay, what about a child born overseas to a member of the military on deployment or stationed at an overseas base? The serviceman applies for a visa for a woman he met and married overseas, brings her here, and while she's waiting for her paperwork to be processed she gives birth. The child is born here, father is military, mother is visa/green card/permanent resident. So that child should NOT be considered a US citizen and not eligible for it ever even if the mother becomes naturalized later?

Or what if the serviceman met and married a woman overseas, married her overseas, she dies and leaves him her child? The child would then not be a citizen because the mother was not a citizen, and could never be considered for citizenship because the mother is dead?

And what about adopted children? Or foundlings--infants abandoned at churches, hospitals, orphanages under the Safe Harbor law whose biological parents didn't bother to leave a birth certificate, or the birth was not documented? You don't know if the parents were citizens or not. What would you like to do with those children?

Did you think about case like these when you came up with your plan?

For one thing, they aren't necessarily young. That cavaet wasn't put into Obama's amnesty plan. Next, they aren't "illegal immigrants". they are either immigrants (who came here legally) or criminal illegal aliens.

Other than seasonal migrant workers, (since American kids are too lazy to do that job anymore,) we don't need any of them. Our unemployment %'s would be much better if they went home. At first glance, this sounds like a good idea from Obama. I would like to compare this plan with Rubio's to see how similar they are.

I do think the Republicans have their head in the sands about illegal immigration. The current system is broken and changes are needed. Just saying people should obey the law isn't good enough when it can take over 10 years to get into the US legally.

If we were to deport everyone who is here illegally, who would raise the children who are American Citizens? We don't want to have all of these kids in foster care, so we let the parents stay-but we can't make that an official rule because then everyone would do it. So, we turn a blind eye instead.

If we deport everyone who is here illegally, who will perform migrant farm labor? Our economy needs this, and even is very hard times-Americans have not been willing to do it for wages farmers can afford to pay. If farmers have to pay Americans, the price for their goods would go up so much, they could not sell anything when competing against other countries' produce.

If we deport everyone who is here illegally, we have wasted a lot of money educating kids who will never pay taxes. So many people are talking about the 800,000 jobs. It would also be 800,000 new taxayers. 800,000 people spending money to create new jobs. If we send them back, we get nothing on our investment.

I agree that we need stricter policies moving forward, but the people who are here pose a lot of problems that the "kick them all out" believers do not have practical solutions for. I do not believe that pretending that this is not a problem is the answer, but we need to recognize that different answers are needed for future immigrants and those who are already here illegally.

Perhaps a pathway to legality could involve service to the country. Either in the military or other service. If these young men and women who came here because their parents brought them as children entered the military for a year, would people feel they "earned" the right to be here legally?

What if their wages were docked more for taxes on the pathway.

There are answers, but we need to stop the "kick them all out" rhetoric to find the practical solutions.

Punishment? You haven't seen conditions inside the deportation camps, or you've ignored what you saw, or you didn't care. I spent three years in one when immigration lost my paperwork. Want to hear what that's like?

The lights are never turned off, so it's hard to get sleep. Food served on several occaisons was crawling with maggots and we were told there was no money in the budget to make more for a camp of 1500, we had to do without. They 'ran out' of eating utensils and we were told to eat with our hands. Underwear assigned to me after the once-weekly 15 minute shower was still crusted with blood from another woman's period because it wasn't washed before being reassigned.

The camp I was in consisted of five tents on concrete pads in TX. Willacy Family Processing Center--also called 'Ritmo' by human rights people who saw the place because they said it reminded them of Guantanamo Bay. Each tent was separated into four 'pods' and there were 50-60 people in each pod, five toilets, and there was no partition between the toilets or the living spaces or the doors. Since only lactating women were given bras, going to the bathroom pretty much involved stripping out of the one piece jumpsuits, and guards would watch us pee and get their rocks off. Strip searches happened on a daily basis anywhere the guard felt like it, and body cavity searches that left us bleeding also happened on a regular basis--and you couldn't ask that the guard performing the strip search/body cavity search be female--any guard at any time for any reason. Guards had their 'favorites'.

The camp chaplain raped my pregnant 17 year old neighbor--pregnant because she was trafficked in at 12 years old for a USC to make child porn, got her pregnant, turned her out. She was picked up as an illegal, but she couldn't get protected status for human trafficking victims because she didn't have a police report documenting the abuse so she was put in the deportation camp until she gave birth, then her baby was taken away and given to the biological father since there was no evidence that he had sexually abused the mother. She committed suicide after they took the baby girl away.

And the only thing I did wrong to deserve being in there was NOTHING. I did NOTHING wrong.USCIS lost my adoption paper and my parents never told me I was adopted before they died in a car accident. I wasn't even here illegally. I had a BC, DL and SS card. I was punished because the government lost their paperwork. I spent three years in the camp writing letters to every courthouse in every state we'd ever lived in trying to find that paper, because ICE is not required to prove you are legal. You are guilty until you prove you are innocent.

"If I had been deported because my mother or my grandfather had broken the law, I would have had nowhere to go" So? There are literally billions of non-U.S. citizens in the world, each with their own personal problems.

I had nowhere to go--I was abandoned as an infant at an international orphanage with no paperwork. When ICE tied to deport me they realized I was 'stateless', or undocumented--there is no birth certificate showing where I was born, who I was born to, or even when--I have no idea exactly how old I really am and I don't celebrate birthdays.

Why should I give a rat's rectum about yours, just because you are here illegally?

Because it's OUR MONEY that's going to detain them. Homeland Security asks Congress for $141 per person per night per year to detain illegal immigrants. That comes out to about $51,000 a year per person. A for-profit prison says 'hey, we'll hold these people for you for $98 a night.' That's about $35,000 a year. Homeland Security adds the leftover $15,000 a year to their budget along with the houses, cars, personal possessions and bank accounts of the people being detained/deported. They took my high school ring when I was detained and 'lost' it--I never got it back. That's why Homeland Security went from a starting budget of $49 million in 2002 to last year's $98 billion.

The private prison meantime hires people who have little chance of getting hired anywhere else (one of the guards who pegged me as his 'favorite' had a history of domestic abuse and another had a record for rape.) They spend the absolute least amount of money on the detainees while pouring tons of money into lobbyists who work to keep them supplied with a constant stream of immigration detainees, like:

children adopted internationally through crooked adoption agencies--the agency pocketed the $5k meant to pay for the child's papers and gave the parents fake documents instead;

the true illegal who hopped the border to deal drugs and shot a cop,

the undocumented/stateless like me,

and the refugees from the Haitian earthquake like the six year old boy orphaned when a house collapsed on his family, processed by the embassy as having an aunt in Miami who was willing to take him in, was waved onto a military transport by the Marines who evacuated the hospital after an aftershock leveled it. Instead he went to a deportation camp, there to remain indefinitely because deportations to Haiti were suspended after the quake, ICE ignoring the hysterical USC aunt who begged to be able to take her nephew in.

Think about all of that before saying 'it's not my problem'.

Here's a diplomat who served in our military;

Hans Joachim Keil was arrested in Dutton in September and accused of being an illegal alien. He was an official representative of Samoa, a current Member of Parliament and a prominent businessman with many family links. He had diverted to Missouri on the way home from trade talks in Brussels where he represented Samoa. “They were going to lock me up for five years plus five years. Five years for impersonating a US citizen and five years for using an illegal US passport. On the day of my arrest when I brought to their attention, that I served in the US military … they threw that out the window and said that I’m an illegal alien and I have no right to be in the United States. They knew I was a Samoan diplomat but they had no regard for my diplomatic passport.”

And the problem is that even after you prove you're legal ICE can still continue to detain you.

Mr. George Ibarra, 46, was born in Mexico but was raised since infancy in Arizona. In his late 20s he enlisted in the Marines and served three years on active duty, including time in Iraq, before being honorably discharged. On February 23, 2011 Department of Justice adjudicator Richard Phelps ruled in Eloy, Arizona that George Ibarra had by a preponderance of the evidence proven that he is indeed a citizen of the United States. Rather than apologize to Mr. Ibarra for previously wrongfully detaining him, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is holding Mr. Ibarra in solitary confinement at the Eloy Detention Center, in clear violation of the U.S. Constitution and a memorandum requiring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to release anyone with "probative evidence" of U.S. citizenship.

And here's some who was clearly a citizen but the ICE official 'wasn't trained right'.

Lack of proper training of immigration inspectors resulted in their mistaken conclusion that Sharon McKnight’s passport was fraudulent. McKnight spent eight days in Jamaica before returning to New York. While there, her luggage, containing all her money, was stolen. Airport workers contributed money so she could reach family members. Once there, her mother flew to Jamaica from New York to take her case to the US consulate in Kingston. With the help of Rep. Michael Forbes (D-NY), consulate officials determined that the passport and birth certificate, which immigration officials had declared fraudulent, were in fact real, and established McKnight’s US citizenship.

And here's someone who just had a different regional acent. Remember the movie 'My Cousin Vinny', the judge having trouble understanding Vinny because of the New York accent?

Houston chef Leonard Robert Parrish, 52, ran afoul of a law intended for illegal immigrants. The Brooklyn-born Parrish went down to the Harris County Sheriff's Office in September to clear up a problem over a couple of bounced checks. He wound up in jail on immigration charges. He was strip-searched and spent 12 hours in custody. "The deputy told me I had a foreign accent," Parrish recalled. "I told him I had an East Coast accent. He said, 'It sounds like a foreign accent to me.'" A 2008 Texas law required a person's citizenship status be linked to his driver's license. A sheriff's deputy told Parrish he was detained because when they ran his driver's license information through their computer, it said that his citizenship status was 'unknown.' "I served on a murder jury in Texas and they can't find out I'm a citizen?" asked Parrish.

For years the administration had said it didn't have the authority to make such a move, saying it couldn't decide to stop deporting wide categories of people on its own without legal approval from Congress.

ONLY CONGRESS CAN LEGALLY MAKE IMMIGRATION POLICY. Obama acknowledged that fact prior.

As someone who has seen the issue from both sides, once as an undocumented detainee and now s a naturalized US citizen, here is my solution to the immigration issue:

1. Refine the definition of 'illegal'. Illegal should mean those who hopped the border to do drugs and shot a cop on the way. No amnesty no matter how long ago the incident occurred. 'Illegal' should NOT mean those who came here legally but ICE took 16 years to process their applications. 'Illegal' should not mean those for whom ICE lost paperwork a decade after the fact. 'Illegal' should NOT mean those who were trafficked in as children, either through international adoption by crooked adoption agencies, by legal American citizen pedophiles for child sex, by their illegal parents, or are refugees. Yes, I am advocating amnesty--for anyone under 18 or who was under 18 at the time the offence was committed.

2. Close the borders. Use the returning troops from the war to secure our northern and southern borders if necessary. Send out advance notice to the world a year in advance that we will be closing our borders. This will give everyone who wants to immigrate to the US time to get their applications in prior to the closure date. Stress to the world that we are NOT closing our borders forever, we are NOT going to become isolationists; we just need to get caught up on the paperwork backlog. Keep the borders closed for 2 years so ICE catches up. Business travelers of course are excepted.

3. Use the time the borders are closed to catch up on the enormous backlog of applications waiting to be processed. In 2010, ICE was just getting to applications filed by Mexicans in 1994, China in 2001.

4. For those already in detention: prioritize the cases. Deport the truly 'illegal' first (see above definitions) then address cases for minor children, elderly/infirm, and terminally ill. Don't make those children wait for years in detention, it's inhumane. Offer them basic English language and civics classes while they are in detention so they will learn about our country; instead of penalizing them for their ignorance, offer them a chance to learn.

5. If you have a case of someone who came here legally but ICE has not gotten to their paperwork and time expired (undocumented), release them on electronic monitoring once they have not been deemed a flight risk. This will ease the overcrowding in deportation camps and make room for more of the truly illegal, higher-priority cases--ICE's own stats say electronic monitoring has a 98% compliance rate--98&% of people released on electronic monitoring do show up in court for their immigration hearing. A 2009 Associated Press article said an examination of ICE records showed that ICE currently asks Congress for $1.7 billion to detain 33,000 people per year ($141 per night) and 18,000 of those people were simply undocumented and had not committed any crimes. Do the math:

18,0000 people x $141 per night x 365 day a year=$926,370,000

Releasing those 18,000 undocumented, non-flight-risk elderly, terminally ill, and minor children on electronic monitoring would free up $926 million. That should be enough to hire more pencil pushers to get caught up on the backlogged paperwork and detain and deport more of the truly illegal in the 2 yr deadline above. Also add in the funds from the 'seized civil assets' the government takes from those who are detained and deported as illegal, that's a lot of money, definitely enough to get caught up on the paperwork backlog.

6. Improve conditions for those in detention. I'm not saying they should have bingo night and TVs in every cell. I'm talking about adequate food; no meals with maggots, please give us eating utensils, and please give us clean underclothes and jumpsuits; NO ONE should have to wear underclothes still crusted by another woman’s period. And adequate medical care; if someone is having a seizure don't tell them to fill out form for an aspirin. If someone is on medication for something please allow them to continue taking those meds. Look up 'Victoria Arellano' for an example.

7. Allow non-violent ICE detainees out on a day-labor program. You do it for nonviolent offenders, why should we be treated any different? Sitting for 24 hours a day in a deportation camp does no one any good whatsoever. The detainee has nothing to do but go crazy; let us out to work while we wait for the judge to throw us out.

8. If the judge says they have proved they are a citizen RELEASE THEM. There is absolutely no excuse for keeping someone after a judge has ruled they should be released. Look up George Ibarra.

9. If someone says they have proof that they are indeed a US citizen or a diplomat from another country, INVESTIGATE. The law of the US is 'innocent until proven guilty', not 'guilty until YOU prove you're innocent.' Don't automatically assume that because the person looks Latino or foreign that they MUST be here illegally. Look at Hans Keil of American Samoa.

10. ACCOUNTABILTY. If one of us dies in ICE custody our legal US citizen relatives have a right to know if we have died, don't just cremate our bodies and throw the ashes in a landfill. It won't matter to us, we're dead, but our relatives outside the deportation camp have a right to know we have died so they can claim our bodies and take care of us according to our respective beliefs. Even if you believe the 'illegal' doesn't have a right to Last Rites, not everyone believes so and if there are relatives willing to claim the body, they as legal citizens have the right to do so.

Americans.....Fight back......

I pay taxes here and it disgusts me to think that my tax dollars are being used to detain someone like I was. I did nothing wrong, I broke no laws, why detain someone for three years because USCIS lost a piece of paper? I didn't want to sit in a deportation camp staring at food crawling with maggots on taxpayer dime!

If they really thought that missing my adoption paper made me a national security threat and wanted to keep tabs on me, ICE has an immigrant monitoring division--they could have released me with an ankle monitoring bracelet. I would not have been able to take my scholarship and go to college, but I could have found a job, worked, and had the cost of the bracelet and the monitoring personnel taken out of my paycheck because I WAS legal to work--had a valid SS number, birth certificate acceptable to everyone except ICE, and a brand new DL, it wouldn't have cost the taxpayers $51,000 for each year I was detained, and I would have found my adoption paper a whole lot faster--it took a week of work at the deportation camp to earn enough to send out one letter to one courthouse asking if they had my adoption paper!

Lots to discuss, not a simple issue.

History. The Legal Immigrants to the Americas aka "Colonists". Usually, Involuntarily (or remain in Prison) sent on One Way Boat Rides to the American Colonies from the European Debtor Prisons, "Undesirables" (extreme British hatred of the Irish), or as Political Prisoners (and Religious). Upon arrival those that were not the "Rich" attempting to make money, became "Indentured Servants" (aka Slaves) before the Africans were brought to the US as sold to the Slave Traders by the Fundamentalist Islamic Arabic Omani Muslims that captured them. The Africans also sent Involuntarily to the Americas on One Way Boat Rides.

It was much later that US Laws were created that made the children of the Irish Legal Immirgrants, Africans, etc. US Citizens, according to the US Supreme Court these children of Legal Immigrants were NOT US Citizens until these US Laws were created.

The US Laws and Immigration. The Legal Precedents. Purpose. It was required for the Legal Immigrants to immigrate thru preestablish quarantine due to previous outbreaks and pandemics that wiped out entire Settlements, being "sick" was a reason to be returned back to the Nation of Origin. This is what other Nations did during the H1N1 Outbreak and this did work to slow down the spread so that there was enough time to create and test a vaccine. This was also previously done to stop the spread of Typhoid, the "Pox" (Small Pox), Spanish Flu, etc. at the US that previously decimated (wiped out) the populations at Asia, Europe and Africa.

The Current US Policy. During the start of theOutbreak of the H1N1 President Obama stated his April 2009 Policy, "US Military will not be used to secure US Borders". As to why the US Military currently cannot be used to secure the US Borders and will be thrown on Unemployment instead (already happening) during President Obama as Commander In Chief Ordered Reduction In Forces (RIFs) of the US Military.

Legal Precedent Against President Obama's Policy. Long ago during the building of the East West Railroad by the Chinese (and Japanese "they all look the same") after being built most Chinese (and Japanese) settled in either the West (Southern California Deserts) or the East (Chinatowns). The Japanese using Japanese intensive farming turned the Southern California Deserts (similar to the Baja Desert) into Farmland, this was confiscated and sold to Caucasians under Executive Order 9066. As far as their children born at the US, they were NOT US Citizens as Ruled by the US Supreme Court. Much later after the East West Railroad US Laws, made the children of the Chinese and Japanese born at the US, US Citizens.

Previous Successful Solution. Legal Precedent against "Anchor Babies". Based on previous US Supreme Court Rulings and US Laws President Eisenhower starts his "Operation Wetback" as the Illegal Aliens are a National Security Threat. Included in the apprehensions and deportations are "those little Frauds" aka Anchor Babies. As being Minors (underage of consent) it is the Illegal Alien Parents that receive the US Taxpayer Funded Benefits, that usually end up as the Illegal Alien Parent's Benefits and not the child, this is known by the Illegal Alien Parents (Legal Guardians of the minor) and Fraudulently used against US Citizens (US Taxpayers) by the Illegal Alien Parents as condoned and even advised to do by Illegal Alien Advocacy Groups like La Raza, M.E.Ch.A., etc., that also state their Goal of the Overthrows of States to form Aztlan, and using increasing Latino Populations while the Causasian Population decreases to passively gain Political Control (Majority Population). Many of the Illegal Alien Advocacy Groups start to protest to end President Eisenhower's Operation Wetback.

Legal Precedent for Illegal Aliens to receive US Taxpayer Paid Public Assistance. Later on the Legal US Citizens of California state to realize what is happening and by Popular Votes demand Proposition 187 making it necessary to be a Legal US Citizen to obtain Public Assistance. The expensive Lawyers (entire Law Firms paid for with US Taxpayer Money) of La Raza versus State Funded Lawyers (like Public Defenders) defeat the "Will of the US Citizens (US Voters)" by having the 9th Circuit Court Rule California Proposition 187 Unconstitutional to ask US Citizenship Status to obtain US Taxpayer Funded Public Assistance.

Illegal Aliens do NOT Pay Taxes. And the Cost of Illegal Aliens. Most of the Legal US Citizens of California start to realize that the Illegal Aliens do NOT pay State and Federal Income Taxes as they Work for Cash Only and do not Fill out Employer Paperwork (State and Federal Income Tax Withholding, Deductions for Medical, Dental, Vision, Social Security, Disability Insurance, etc.) to avoid apprehensions and deportations. The Legal US Citizens of California start paying over $10 Billion on Illegal Aliens, $7.7 Billion Education for Illegal Aliens, $1.4 Billion for Health Care of Illegal Aliens, $1.4 Billion for the imprisonment of Illegal Aliens for Violent Crimes of Murder, Rape, etc.; this money then becomes Unavailable for Projects/Programs for Legal US Citizens of California. The total amount of Sales Taxes at the time was $17 Million, $17 Million does not pay for the over $10 Billion spent on Illegal Aliens, NOT including the even higher costs for the Public Assistance for Illegal Aliens (required US Taxpayer paid Public Assistance for Illegal Aliens since the Federal 9th Circuit Court Ruling); this then requires the implementations of Cuts to Programs/Projects for Legal US Citizens of California.

Recent Facts (2010 to current). President Obama states his Policy to the US Census Bureau to include Illegal Aliens in the US Census by prohibiting the US Census Bureau from using the "Long Form" inquiring as to US Citizenship Status. The State of California based the California Revenue on the US Census, that included the Illegal Aliens. This Driver's License is used as positive identification for Voter Registration. At State's like New Mexico all that is required to obtain a New Mexico State Driver's License is a Utility Bill, as the State of New Mexico believed that by allowing Illegal Aliens to obtain New Mexico State Driver's Licenses more Illegal Aliens would purchase Vehicle Insurance, which did NOT occur.

There are different 'versions' of the so-called 'Dream Act'. The Democratic version opens it up to virtually everyone - even if they flunked out of high school and can't speak English, and allows a dozen or so of their 'relatives' to emigrate here.

The Republican version is much more restrictive in who qualifies, requiring that they actually graduate from high school, enter college or the armed forces and speak English.

Obama's immigration plan really doesn't help the Latino population. When you consider less than 40% of Latinos graduate high school, then over 60% of the Latino children population won't qualify for a work permit. Also, those children that do qualify run the risk of having their parents deported. Parents that actually worked hard to teach their children good morals/ethics and to work hard which gave them the tools to graduate in the first place. I guess Obama doesn't have a problem in breaking up good Latino families.

The old saw about desperate times and desperate measures comes to mind. .

The criteria that will be used for issueing a work permit makes sense to me. These young people will not have to live in fear but continue with with their work, education and serving in the military.

If the US had immigration laws that were half as strict as the ones Mexico has we wouldn't be in this mess.

The draw back is that this not only doesn't change the current illegal alien problem, it may enhance it. This has happened before and apparently it will continue to happen in the future because of actions like President Obama and other presidents before have done.

The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin giving work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of a growing Latino electorate that has opposed administration deportation policies.

The administration's decision will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants. Two senior administration officials described the plan to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity ahead of its expected announcement Friday.

Illegal immigrants will avoid deportation and be eligible for work permits if they arrived in the U.S. before age 16, are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED, or served in the military.

If this is what the president and the administration wants fine if they take it one step further. If a person is here illegally and has meet those requirements and is under age 21, they probably are living with parents who are also here illegally. So, the person under 21 should have to disclose who they live with and if they are indeed illegal and they also meet all of the new requirements (lived here 5 years or more/no criminal record, they would then have 12 months from identification to pass a test that proves they can effectively read/write/speak English. If they are able to pass that test, have active employment and a desire to stay, they would become U.S. citizens.

I have thought for many years what would be a more practical solution to our problem that doesn't require more border patrols, new laws that encourage illegals from coming here under some new type of amnesty, unreasonable fences/walls or later problems with people coming across our borders illegally.

Make a change to the wording of the 14th amendment. Change the wording so that no one is granted U.S. citizenship simply by being born in this country unless: both parents of the child born in the U.S. are current U.S. citizens. That alone would prevent tens of thousands of people who cross our borders just in time to give birth so that not only does the child get to stay, but almost always the mother is allowed to stay to care for the child. "Hmm, let's put people who are legal citizens of another country in our military and give them a weapon.".. seriously, WTF??!

On the other hand, this could be the worlds best plan for documenting all the illegals.. Obama grants them work permits, if they tell us exactly who they are and where they live, and then we vote him out, get a REAL American in there, and use that info to round them up and ship them out.. Could even have a reality show "World's Dumbest Illegal Immigrants"..

I am all for the illegals to seek legal citizenship, but FFS, don't just allow them to break the law and get away with it..

Seems to me that breaking the law and failing to do what one took an oath to do, that being upholding the constitution, should be official misconduct and punishible by prosecution of all involved.

So what are they going to do?- Send the parents back and keep the child here in the US, dividing the family? What the hell? The rules, as stated:

Individuals must 1. Have come to the United States under the age of 16, 2. Be no older than 30, 3. Be currently enrolled in school, have graduated high school or served in the military, 4. Have been in the country for five continuous years, and 5. Have a clean criminal record.

First, "under the age of 16"? That is way too old. If this passes, it should be changed to a much lower age, like 5. Certainly, six year-olds and older children can speak their native language. Seconly, our schools are burdened enough, and children of parents here illegally should not be permitted in. Send them back, immediately to their home country, along with their parents. Fine them severely as well. If we went to Mexico and did this, it would be a felony and we would spend time in a Mexican prison.

This is a travesty. All these people, young, old, and anchor babies too, need to go back to the parent's native country and apply for immigration the legal way, like most of our ancestors did. The US economy cannot absorb all of these people that want to come here and get government handouts.

I understand that the kids of illegals had no choice when brought into our country and that they did not intentionally break the law. But they are here illegally and do know that as they get older they are breaking the law. Why are they not trying to become citizens then? They can apply or get work visa's on their own. As far as I'm concerned illegal is illegal, as an American citizen I do not have the right to determine which laws I want to break.

I'm opposed to what Obama did, but he's not changing any laws. In most cases, the INS has had discretion regarding its actions (a discretion granted by the law). We've got to stop thinking that any action that we don't agree with must be illegal or unconstitutional. Such attitudes don't advance debates on this issue.

I'm been living here since I was 6 years old, my mother and father just became legal and both older sister been. I graduated high school with wall in front of me, this brought that wall down. I can live without fear of loss and being a burden on my family. I am an American, if I were to be deported home as some might call it, to me it would be the farthest thing from home I can ever imagine, away from my family and friends. I am young and proud of Obama for seeing through my eyes.

Yes, I am very bothered about this latest escapade by Obama to again do something which goes against the Constitution of the United States of America to drive us further into socialism!! When I do get back to work, I do not want my tax dollars going to these people. If they want to be a citizen of this country, they should go back to where they are citizens and from there apply to be a citizen of this country.

America's working class abandoned itself years ago.Every time you hired an unlicensed contractor, a undocumented gardener, ate food picked by illegals. We cannot have it both ways. As for circumventing our legal process,i suggest instead of claiming to know what the executive branch can do, you READ what it can do. But before you blame the President for all the wrongs in the country, i also suggest you look at Congress. as pointed out, they write our laws but they seem to have forgotten about America withhteir lack of action.
