Dueling speeches, big day: Obama, Romney in Ohio

Sharpening the choice for the nation, President Barack Obama and Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney are offering dueling visions of how to fix the economy, framing in their most direct terms the fierce debate that will decide the November election. In a flash of campaign drama, the two are giving major speeches at nearly the same time Thursday from the same state, battleground Ohio.

For the president, Thursday's speech will aim to get above the daily ups and downs — more downs of late — and pull the American people into the discussion Obama wants: a choice between his economic ideas and Romney's. As he has done before at pivotal moments in his presidency, Obama will use a big speech to try to reframe the debate as he heads into the heart of the campaign calendar.

For Romney, the occasion is about offering definition to a divided public about how he would lead the economy, including the priorities for his first 100 days in office. The former Massachusetts governor who made a fortune in business is sensing momentum on his side, particularly as the weak pace of job growth undermines Obama's stick-with-me message.

The split-screen economic addresses offer the air of a bigger moment in a general election campaign that has been defined mainly by ads, fundraisers and monthly jobs reports. Yet for all the emerging hype, particularly surrounding the speech of the sitting president, previews from both sides point toward plenty of familiar themes and few, if any, new ideas.

Obama is not expected to announce any major economic policies. His aides say his pending jobs ideas before Congress remain valid and he will keep pushing them.

The two men will essentially be posting up on each other from 250 miles apart, with Obama at a community college in Cleveland and Romney at a manufacturing company in Cincinnati. In choosing Ohio, they are targeting the state that strategists in both parties consider perhaps the most contested and vital of the election.

Obama will probably pound on the second-term economic vision he began laying out months ago. He will lay out a jobs plan of spending tax money on education, energy, science and innovation and transportation; cutting the debt by reducing spending elsewhere and raising taxes on the wealthy; and taking on the nation's loophole-loaded tax code to make it fairer.

Romney will talk about cutting regulation and spending, overhauling the tax system, doing away with Obama's health care overhaul and supporting a major oil pipeline known as Keystone XL. Setting his own expectations for Obama, Romney told donors in Cincinnati: "He'll speak with great rhetoric and eloquence. But actions and records speak a heck of a lot louder than words."

Without doubt, Romney and Obama have starkly different visions of economic rebirth, the issue of top concern for voters. To hear them tell it, Obama thinks Romney's jobs philosophy is a failed notion of just cutting taxes and gutting regulation, while Romney says the president is a big-government defender who is stifling the free market at the cost of economic acceleration.

Of the two, Obama is carrying more of a political burden because, as the guy in charge, he is saddled with a lumbering economic recovery. Romney can largely blame the incumbent — just as Obama, as a candidate, benefited from blaming President George W. Bush.

Obama has sought to erode that argument and dent Romney's business credentials by saying his only idea is faulting Obama.

The speeches come in a month marked by bad economic news. May employment numbers showed that the private sector created a disappointing 69,000 jobs and that the jobless rate ticked up to 8.2 percent. This week, the Federal Reserve released data showing that the median family net worth shrank between 2007 and 2010 to levels not seen since 1992.

No matter what path either candidate takes to reach the necessary 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, Ohio and its 18 electoral votes figure in every scenario. No Republican has ever won the presidency without winning Ohio. Obama carried the state 52 percent to 47 percent in 2008 over John McCain; Bush carried it 51 percent to 49 percent in 2004 over Democrat John Kerry.

Is Romney pro-business?

Better regulations can help stabilize the market, such as Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, enacted during the Great Depression to put a wall between commercial banking and investment (speculative) banking. This law had worked to stabilize the market until GOP - controlled Congress repealed it in 1999.

What happened after the repeal? This repeal is partly responsible for this current financial meltdown - which the Glass Steagall was designed to prevent.

Who has benefitted from this meltdown? Vulture capitalists such as Romney. Well then, everybdy is hurt by the recession, only Romney and his fellow vultures have benefitted -

Then I guess he is pro-business afterall - he is for melt-down - which has hurt many business but has given him a lot of oppotunities as a vulture.

I am positive that we have already heard everything that our President will say today a few times before. Same old crap, just a different day.

1/20/2013 - the end of an error

On another note, I thought that this administration told us the recession ended in 2009. So what we are expeiencing now must be President Obama's economy. I pretty sure that Debbie Washermans Shorts said that a couple of years ago. The spin never stops.

Bad news? Gas prices are dropping, the stock market has seen record-breaking highs, The Fortune 500 companies recently reported their profits are up 16%...but the msm pushes this "bad news" perception, it really bugs me. It would be nice if they occasionally mentioned that unemployment was at 10% during Ronald Reagan's first term.

I dislike the media.

Yes, Amy. Not to mention that during a discussion I had with a recruiter recently, she expressed with enthusiasm that the private sector is hiring. She has no reason to lie to me, as we have had a business partnership for many years.

Does this include every company? Certainly not the ones that have aligned themselves with the GOP agenda. However, the gloom and doom campaign message that Romney and the GOP are hammering only proves that they are consistent with regurgitating the same talking points: cast President Obama as a failure, even for the things that are out of his control, i.e. the EU, housing market and the continued obstruction that was sealed the night of the president's inauguration. Shameful!

Amy B. I do believe MSNBC is right leaning because I agree the numbers aren't as bad as they make them out to be and they failed to mention President Obama already has 263 electoral votes of the needed 270 whereas Robme only has 206! President Obama beats the pants off Robme in popularity too! I beleieve its like 56% to 42%. They see the President as a cool, likeable people person and Robme as a cold, all business Robot that he is! That is why Ohio is so important!

They also don't mention that the President is ahead is the majority of those swing states and only needs a couple to win the 270 electoral votes, Robme needs a bunch! That is probably why 3 states with Repug Governors have all of a sudden decided to purge voters for legitimacy! And make ridiculous rules so minorities can't vote! Why would someone have a drivers license if they don't drive or own a car because they are to poor to do so? The Repugs are getting desperate because they know their loser candidate isn't going to win! And Robme is having trouble finding a decent VP that everyone will like and who will put up with him! Nobody wants to be associated with a loser! Obama 2012

Where have you been the last 3-1/2 years? Obama has accomplished a lot in spite of Rethug obstruction which the the main reason he has not been able to keep all of his promises or complete his agenda for his first term. Clean out the House and take it back and there's no telling what we will be able to do to get this economy back on track. I'm laying blame exactly where it belongs....on the lack of leadership in the House and the teabaggers.

JH, It is not the President's fault, it is companies that are breaking unions so they can have cheaper labor like China! Even tho many of them are making record profits, they are just pocketing the money and hiding it in offshore accounts to avoid paying higher taxes (their fair share) they are outsourcing jobs to other countries, and not hiring! The rich and big corps back the GOP! Oh, and the rich's kids don't have to work summer jobs as they have silverspoons in their mouths like Robme growing up! They are so "out of touch" with the working class it isn't funny! Hope you have a lot of money JH because if Robme gets in, the rich will be the only ones to survive! We middle class and poor will get "thrown under the bus" and have our healthcare, ss, medicare, medicaid and foodstamps taken away! I have read there is only like 5% of the nation who are "freeloaders" on welfare, the rest of us are struggling due to the economic collapse in late 2008 and the beginning of 2009, due to failed Bush/GOP policies of the prior 8 yrs, just in time to throw the mess in President Obama's lap! I think he has done the best he can inspite of the stonewalling congress, and deserves another 4 years! He is a people person and has our backs, Robme will turn the US into "Corporate Run America" controlled by the Koch Bros and BP (big oil) Grover Norquist/Donal Trump and big rich corps! No thank you! Sharon, since we have not held the election yet, those "electoral votes" are based on polls only - not real voting.

As far as being "cool," that doesn't sway this independent voter. I'm not looking for a "cool" president, but then I'm not looking for a wooden one either. I'm looking for someone who can make some real progress in beginning to fix the problems we face - because I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen in another 4 years. I think we are going to be fighting these battles for a long, long time. Unfortunately.

Mr. Obama will indicate MORE Stimulus spending in his CAMPAIGN speech, with emphasis and a laser beam on TWO major "shovel ready" programs:

  1. Perpetual motion car engine to be built by GE in China.
  2. Personnel transporter, eliminating the requirement for aircraft, to be built by the folks at the Fiske plant in Finland.

Sounds almost as good as Mr. Biden who says plants can grow without sun, water, or soil.

However....Mr. Obama will have his "laser beam" on full throttle and demand Congress give him more STIMULUS spending for infrastructure, education, R&D, and of course.....his Union public sector voter base.....teachers, firefighters, and policemen/women. Same old rhetoric with the same FAILED results.

Annie, they are based on the states who have already had primaries and are calculated as to who got more of the votes in those states, which means those states will probably vote the same way in November! I realize it is a poll but it's an excellent indicator of things to come! The electoral college is already estimating that President Obama will win by almost indentical numbers as he did in 2008 against John McCain, who was a much more decent man and way more experienced politician then Robme ever thought about being!! Robme's agenda is so obvious . . he will do or say anything to get wealth and power! He is a cold-hearted, lying, flip-flopping, draft dodging, tax evading, rich, vulture capitalist buyout specialist, who flaunts his wealth, and brags about giving pink slips and firing people, and aligns himself with all rich corp friends, that are poised to take over this country if Robme wins! He will be their little "token" robot puppet President! No thanks! Vote straight democrat in November and let the rich know that can't buy us too! Obama 2012

This is not completely true...The vote to pass it through was bipartisan (Senate 90,8) (House 362,57), and the democrat president Bill Clinton signed it into law. This recession is not Republican made, It has an equal part on both sides of the political spectrum...but spin as you must...

Reagan had created over 10 million by this time

Health Care for 23 million including 6. million youth,

This may not even be constitutional, not to mention the majority of the country is not behind it.

    ended the Iraq unfounded war,

By following Bush's own time line.

the unemployment rate is down a point even with republican obstruction

Reagan had started with a 15.5% unemployment, and had cut that in half by his first 4 years.

, the Auto Industry and other are hiring..

Of course they are, but at what rate? As for the auto industry, I think that most would tell you its great to have a job, but its not what it was.

Why would someone have a drivers license if they don't drive or own a car because they are to poor to do so?

Why would someone keep parroting that anyone is pushing for a license to drive in order to vote? In what reality is a photo ID always a license to drive? Being against this removes any moral rights you have in claiming a "stolen election" if Obama loses. You're asking for the loophole that allows cheating to remain in effect and ignoring that what is actually being called for is just a simple state issued ID card like we already have. You can already be ticketed for not carrying an ID card in the US.

...or as the teapublicans like to say, "We have to do something about this gay rights and about abortion..."

Nobody is pushing to remove gay rights. Abortion was a forced hand by the Obama administration when the ACA called for forcing those who don't believe in it to pay for it. You were told repeatedly that was going to happen.

Just look what they did in 2001 when the Democratic President left them a balanced federal budget with surplus.....

You left out who was in charge of House and Senate under the leadership of Gingrich. You also left out that the housing market began tumbling, jobs began to go overseas (both before Clinton's term ended), and 9/11 happened (resulting in Afghanistan war).

Allen, the tea party HAS and are still using social wedge issues as much as tax issues so that point is very valid.

The republicans are in charge of the house now and filibuster or block everything in the Senate. It is time for them to work with the entire electorate and their representatives. Their leaders (14 of them) met during inauguration day to plan how to bring the new president down and have been lock step ever since to accomplish this all the while blocking everything, even their own ideas from moving forward when the president agreed with them, with no remorse as to what they are doing to the USA as a whole.

I will bring up another issue the tea party, NRA and the republicans are always lying about. I would love anyone to tell me where the dems and Obama wants to take your guns away.

Romney proposes fewer regulations (doesn't increase jobs, but does increase profits), cutting spending (more unemployment, especially for police and teachers, although we need fewer amyway according to him), over-hauling the tax system (independent firm has already said it reduces taxes on rich primarily and government revenue in total), doing away with health care (to be replaced with what, nothing?) and building the pipeline (creates 10k jobs and endangers the largest aquifer in the US).

Good thinking. Now, what about the middle class?

Mark Thomas, Very well said! You get a "A"! I just read an article about Obamacare written by the head editor of, I believe it was an affliate of CBS, and he said economist have said if they strike down just the part of Obamacare that says everyone must buy it, and went to a one payer system, it would definitely work. That everyone could pay for Healthcare in their taxes like they do in Canada and several European countries where it is a success, then everyone would have affordable healthcare! Of course, the GOP people have been touting this as socialism but so what? If it works, let it be! It is already working for thousands and I think it would be a huge mistake of the Supreme Court to strike it down!

The only major hurtle here in the US would be big, monopoly insurance companies, who are fighting it tooth and nail and pouring tons of lobbying money into the GOP congressmen and candidates because they know it would be their demise! Say goodbye Blue Cross, who had the audacity to send flyers to their insured telling them not to vote for Healthcare and who (and this is a true fact) upped my friend's company's insurance rates (which had less than 100 employees) 35% in one year!

The GOP keeps accusing President Obama of "class warfare" when they are actually the ones doing it! It is pretty sad when, in our great democracy, the rich keep getting richer and the middle class and poor keep getting poorer because of failed GOP policies of the last 8 yrs. before President Obama was elected. It is sad that only the rich can afford good healthcare, only the rich can afford college, afford a new home or car! And the gap will definitely widen if Willard Robme is elected as he is only concerned with the 1% rich who are the verge of taking over our great country for their benefits and not ours! They would slash ss, medicare, medicaid and foodstamps and leave us already struggling middle and poor classes homeless in the street dying as we will have no food or healthcare! Hell no, we wont go! Vote the "do nothing" bums out in November! Vote straight democrat to fight back against the rich! There is nothing wrong with being successful and rich as long as you are honest and caring too, like President Obama! Obama 2012

We are the United States of America, we are not Brazil,Chile, Costa Rica,Holland, Germany,or China. What don't you get about that? The responsibility of the Federal Governmnet is to protect us so that we are free to persue our dreams. That is why so many people from other countries want to come here. As soon as the progresive/liberal agenda spreads throughout America we may become like those other countries but until then we must fight to not let that happen. We already are spending far too much on education and health care in this country and it is a failure because of liberal policies. We need real change. How long do you want to continue down the same path? The ignorance on the left is what is taking this country in the wrong direction.

JH, I would rather spend my taxes on healthcare, education and infrastructure than 2 unfunded wars that only make the corps making war machines richer! That is why President Obama ended the Iraq war that we were lied into by Dumbya! You know the war where no WMDs were found and he blew apart the whole country looking for Saddam Hussein, whom he said was in cahoots with Bin Laden (no evidence was ever found that he had anything to do with Bin Laden or 9/11) It was nice of him to off that country's evil dictator but he could have done it the smart way, like President Obama did with Bin Laden, and just sent a CIA assassin to off him or a Navy Seal team instead of destroying the whole country and killing innocent people in the process! That is why they hated us so! And then when the outraged Iraqi's said "And who is gonna pay for this mess" Dumbya had no choice other than to assure the Iraqis we would and we've been paying billions for it ever since! President Obama stepped in and ended the Iraq war and is winding down Afghanistan too to save us billions of dollars and our sons, which we have already lost 6000 of due to Bush!

And btw, Dumya said he was gonna end the Iraq war in 2003 (look it up) and it took 8 yrs and President Obama to do it! President Obama also has gotten rid of about 15 top Al Qaeda guys, including the top one, Osama Bin Laden, another thing Dumbya failed at! President Obama has reduced the defense budget too, at the outrage of the warhawk GOP! Ending wars, bringing our boys home, and reducing the defense budget is the right way to reduce the defecit not taking away needed programs that are helping the still struggling middle and poor classes to survive and get back on their feet, like ss, medicare, medicaid, and foodstamps and low cost housing! President Obama has done everything in his power to create jobs (4.3 million in the last 3.5 yrs) but unfortunately there are still 4 million out of work but that is not his fault! It is the fault of the greedy big corps that are making record profits and putting the money in offshore accounts to avoid paying their fair share of taxes! It is the big corps fault as they are busting unions, taking away benefits and outsourcing jobs so they can pay their workers less and pocket more profits and they are not hiring US workers! That is why unemployment is still 8.2% but the President did it get it down from 10.2% it was when he took office! Economists are saying we are getting out of the abyss of 2008, slowly but surely. A recent poll said more Americans were more confident the economy was getting better! The GDP is up, stockmarkets more than not, banks are solvent, gas prices are going down, automakers are healthy again and hiring and making more fuel efficient cars to rid us of our dependency on oil and even the housing and construction are starting to loosen up and more people have affordable healthcare than ever, all thanks to President Obama's policies! He has done a lot inspite of the stonewalling GOP congress (including reducing the defecit a couple of trillion since he's been in office) who are holding our economy hostage just to make the President look bad and to "make him a one term President" because they are greedy, corrupt and prejudice and can't stand kowtowing to a black guy who is for the little people! I am 63, white, retired from my job of 25 years and he has my vote! Obama 2012

This next election is going to be about what direction this country is going to go in the future. I hope that the Wisconsin vote, and California vote are good indications of what's to come. We just can't afford offering retirement to people who are only 63 years old and after only 25 years of work. I have been in the work force for over 45 years and stil going strong. i have owned a company for 26 years and have contributed over $5 million to the tax coffers in this country in those 26 years. Obama did not get my vote last time and he will not get my vote this year. And it ha NOTHING to do with the color of his skin. You sound like a racist.

Are you serious? Romney just said this week that he opposes even a "ban on health insurance company discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions," "one of the law’s most popular provisions," to quote ABCNews.

So, people with diseases from no fault of your own, hopefully you don't lose your job. People in this position, unless extremely wealthy, are likely to lose their house or worse.

And what about the guy who has consumed so much alcohol in his life he now has cirrhosis of the liver ?

Or what about the prostitute having unprotected sex to get her drug money, but got AIDS instead ??

Or how about burger boy spending his life's earnings at fast food restaurants and never exercising ???

You see, good health can be as much of a personal decision as it is "no fault of their own". Obamacare ignores personal responsibility, making you and me and everyone else responsible for their health issues.

I am responsible for MY health issues, and, to a certain degree, that of my family. I pay for health insurance which is already expensive enough without desiring to help pay for those who can not or will not take resposibility for themselves.

        The nanny state stops here.

I'd like to add to this list of uninsurable pre-existing conditions: if you've ever had kidney stones. I know two people, who through no fault of their own, are uninsurable without a job or marriage to someone with a job with health insurance. One person was able to marry someone who has health insurance through a job (lucky timing), while the other had to take a low-paying job with insurance since his spouse is retired and cannot offer him insurance; the second person hopes to get back to his previous pay level, and is lucky to have some money saved up, but worries about his future. Because of kidney stones.

This pre-existing thing covers anybody, not just people who don't take care of themselves, and it concerns people on any place of the political spectrum.

Other non-fault pre-existing conditions include any and all forms of cancer, asthma, arthritis, high blood pressure, etc. The list goes on.

JH, I am sure Sharonog61 meant his LAST job was 25 years. The retirement you are talking about is probably a retirement fund, so a beneficiary would be only getting what the fund makes, nothing extra out of your pocket (if you had it managed properly). He didn't mention how much if any of that retirement he personally contributed or if he and the other employees turned down extra hourly wages for the employer's contribution.

Over the last 3 Republican administrations, decrease in taxes for the wealthy have resulted in exporting over 6 million American manufacturing jobs. They are responsible for All of the interest payments on the National Debt (Clinton paid off all of the debt and interest of the firat 39 Presidents. This leaves the ravages of the discredited supply side economics. This holds that giving away the store to people who have no need to save or spend, based on their taxes is somehow an economic stimulus. 3 decades of failure, a new profiteer represents the Republican Party in its quest to destroy America. 87 % of the National debt is DIRECTLY attributable to the excesses of Reagan, Bush I and Bush II. The remaining 13% of the National debt is due to cleaning up the mess left by lack of regulation, lack of enforcement of regulation, legalized tax fraud (changing conventional income into carry forward interest) and selling worthless debt instruments (collateralized debt obligations) which eventually fail, much in the same way that Bain and Romney made their fortunes. It is time to return to a sensible tax base, where GE pays at least the same rate as the local plumber. Where the third highest corporate tax rate in the world which is paid only by small companies, can be lowered to a competitive rate and the major corporations can spend less resources on lawyers and accounts to avoid taxes and more on actually benefiting capitalists (these are the people who buy stocks, individuals, unions etc) and not Cooperate Communists who steal the owners equity through friends and family boards.

You can forget what Romney says on the campaign trail because it won't matter if he is elected, he will just be a Ceremonial President taking orders and smiling for the cameras like Reagan was.

It's because Romney doesn't really have a plan... He's just waiting for the puppet masters (Norquist, Rove. et al) to push the papers before him to sign.

Since this the greatest economic down turn world wide since the great depression, one might give Obama some credit since we are far better off than the world was in the 1930's. This of course is due to reforms instituted in the 30's by FDR. Those very same reforms are the ones that Republicans have been trying to over turn since then. They include Social Security, unemployment insurance, Glass-Steagal, national labor relations act, I could go on but why bother. FDR needed a world war to get us out of the disaster created by republicans and an unfettered wall street. The vestiges of FDR's policies has made the job somewhat easier for Obama and even minimal patriotism on the part of Republicans would have helped the country get even further along. During this administration over 1 million manufacturing jobs have been created reversing the Republican record of exporting 6+ million jobs. Even their choice of Romney, draft evading, prep school bully who has demonstrated cowardice his entire life shows their utter contempt for America.

Expending the money we don't Have? OHHH you mean in wars we don't need !!!

because we needed to help the ones that lost their jobs due to the 2008 bank crisis remember Greenspan talk about it did nothing!!! and the Bushes consent it by not interfering because of our "capitalistic" ideas to only help the rich and screw the poor.

We need to spend money since the private banks took Bush's bail out and did not and still do not want to lend to the middle class. They are many people that now can afford to buy a home but can get a reasonable financing, student loans etc where do you live?

This is the same old deal. Romney promising he can increase jobs and living standards when living standards have not increased in 30 years. Obama worried about the poor and disenfranchised. At least Romney has already said he is not worried about them. Neither party worries about or believes it is their duty to represent people who don't agree with them just because they are citizens and tax payers. It has become a matter of the inept ideologues fighting with the unable ideologues. It is more of the same old thing. It is so redundant that the country has gotten to the point that the tea party not wanting to pay taxes or have social programs is considered a new idea. We don't have any new ideas, we are just arguing about the same crap. There have been many causes of our financial problems. Conservatives did not help when they insisted on fighting two wars without paying for them and deregulating financial markets. Conservatives new ideas that we should deregulate and have lower taxes were the same kinds of people jumping out of buildings in 1927. They had no regulations and much lower taxes. Democrats are no better. Half of the public cannot support the other half and have any financial security or increase living standards. It would help if we could agree on what our goals are and develop a plan to accomplish them. That will not happen because each party's plan is to be in power. Conservatives and liberals seem to be made up of people who believe all of the nations problems would be solved if everyone else just acted like them and believed what they believe. Societies throughout history have never been able to solve all of their problems and we are not going to be an exception. At least Santorum, although completely unelectable provided comic relief. Where is Ross Perot? I don't know if I can face the monotony of Romney's personality (and I don't care how successful he is) and I don't know if I can take any more of the President's TV appearances (and I enjoy his a lot more than the spearkers).

It shouldn't be all about Democrats or Republicans!

It should be about doing the right thing for our country and the majority of its citizens. I consider myself an independent voter, but going back to the Reagan days and with the only exception having been Perot, I’ve always voted Republican. But all this single-minded, left versus right, ideological one dimensional bull has got to go! This is the problem with our country. It shouldn't be about Democrats or Republicans! It should be about Americans, especially our elected officials, doing the right thing for our country and its citizens.

Both parties have sold out the bulk of the American citizens, who they're supposed to represent, by allowing the "out-sourcing" floodgates to open wider and wider without taking any sensible measures to stem the tide. (Under Clinton jobs to China, Under Bush I & II influx of illegals or cheap easily abused labor into the US and jobs to Mexico/NAFTA) Our leaders are elected by the Citizens of the United States of America to represent the interests of those citizens and the country itself. They are NOT elected by the Global Market Place or foreign citizens!

We need whoever wins the next election to Start Protecting American Jobs and do whatever it takes to bring back the jobs they let go. They've got to give us somebody who will stand up for the American people.

We need to bring manufacturing back to the United States of America and both parties are ignoring tariffs as a way to level the playing field, raise money and bring jobs back home. Let's guess why. Oh that's right, tariff is a dirty word. Hum, maybe it’s that our so called leaders (political leaders) are beholden to the same people who are exporting our jobs.

I guess we should keep letting Corp Boards, Wall Street, CEOs and Foreign Lobbyists promote sending US jobs to countries where they work for slave wages, no benefits, no OSHA safety standards or no real environment regulations. How's that been working for us?

The so called “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field. Companies may have made higher profits by "out sourcing", but they've been putting middle class Americans who are a good part of the world’s customer base out of work. I’m not a lefty or member of any union. I run a business that employs over 20 people and produces products that are purchased by customers that do manufacturing and packaging. I’m just an average Joe, but I've been saying this for more than 10 years now. If I can see it, so can our so called leaders (political leaders) who are beholden to the same people who are exporting our jobs.

We need to add tariffs that are proportionate to the inequities in wages and regulations in the country where the goods were produced and or where we’re importing them from. We could then use the money raised by these tariffs to help companies build state of the art manufacturing plants here in the USA, which would create more jobs here at home for US citizens, which would then in turn increase our income tax revenue.

The people with all of the excuses as to why we can’t or aren’t willing to manufacture products here in the US are the same people who have provided us with the thinking that’s gotten us into this mess in the first place.

Over the past 15-20 years, I've seen too many of our customer's close manufacturing plants here in the USA and move those plants to different countries, decimating entire areas here in OUR COUNTRY. And I'm not alone. Returning jobs to American Citizens will provide income tax revenue to OUR Government versus our government having to pay unemployment benefits to those who would be jobless instead.

Bringing manufacturing back to the US not only gives jobs to the US citizens who would be working in those manufacturing facilities, but to the people that would be working in the businesses that would spring up all around them. This should also include the safe harvesting, production and distribution of our own natural energy here in the USA, rather than paying for fuel from countries where they hate us. Let’s keep that money and those jobs here in the US.

These so-called “free trade agreements” have to go. It was obvious when they were passing these agreements as to what was going to happen and sure enough it did. Our leaders had to have known this as well when they were passing these bills. It’s just common sense. We also need to bring customer support services back to the United States of America and staff them with employees who are US Citizens.

The “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field! The whole idea of the tariffs is so we can pay our factory workers a decent wage and not be blown out by these other countries where they don’t play by the same rules.

We may have to pay a bit more for products made here in the USA by US citizens, but at least we'll still have jobs and a future for our children.

The bottom line is that “Our Government” has to protect American industry and the jobs that those industries provide. If they do that, the rest will take care of itself.

All this single-minded, left versus right, ideological one dimensional bull has got to go!

This is the problem with our country.

It shouldn't be about Democrats or Republicans!

It should be about Americans, especially our elected officials, doing the right thing for our country and its citizens.

It doesn’t matter who fixes it – Just Fix It.

                          of course it's his fault.

Cons, I've asked this queston before but have received no cogent responses: what would you or GOP have done differently that you think would have put us in a btter economic position right now? Do you think not implementing TARP (as so many in the GOP have said) would have been better? DO you think creating 2m jobs with the stimulus was the wrong thing to do? How about bailing out two of the largest US manufacturers and creating 500k more unemployed would have been better?

Bottom line, do you think doing nothing was the right thing to do?

I would have done all three.

I would've implemented tax breaks for any company hiring long term employees.

There is trillions of dollars overseas that corps won't bring back into the US because of taxation.

I would allow those companies to bring that money back as long as it was used to create jobs. (tax free)

What could have been done differently?

                            1. Wait until the second term to implement ObamaCare.
                            2. Don't start off the administration by saying you will fundamentally transform the system. That is a signal to businesses that they better put everything on hold to see what the President meant by that statement.
                            3. Refrain from saying things such as "I did not become President to help a bunch of fat cats on Wall Street.
                            4. Don't say things like "The current system has never worked".
                            5. Stop blaming everyone else which shows a lack of leadership.
                            6. Don't tell the power industry you will run them into bankruptcy if they build any more coal fired power plants.
                            7. Don't project the image that you are with the unions and against businesses.
                            8. In summary, stop hating private business.

Wrong. Projecting a pro-business, less regulation atmosphere is what businesses needed to hear to boost optimism which in turn incenticizes investment and creates jobs. TARP, bailouts and stimulus are all temporary fixes with no long term gains. Once the money is gone, the layoffs return. It is happening as we speak.

Road, demand for goods and services creates jobs. Projecting a "pro-business" attitude is nice but it doesn't create jobs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but your answer is do nothing but talk a lot about being pro-business and reduce regulations.

                            Thomas,

Hmmm, if businesses feel confident enough about what the near future holds, they will expand their operations which means more workers will be needed. The additional workers will have money to spend and buy things which means more products are needed. Liberals always use the argument that increasing spending will put money in people's hands to buy things and companies will hire more people because of the additional demand for goods. But business owners are not stupid. They know once the stimulus money stops flowing, demand for goods will stop as well, so they won't hire anyone long-term. That's why companies have been hiring temporary help. You have two options to create demand for goods. You either stimulate demand with stimulus money or give businesses good reasons to expand which they are itching to do with the right leadership. Stimulus money disappears very quickly.

I am in the engineering business. Although the demand for goods is no more today than it was four years ago, there has been an upsurge of orders from companies ready and waiting to expand. It is not because demand for goods is increasing. It is because the anticipation that things will get better. That all goes back to confidence. Maybe companies feel Obama will be gone next year and are getting ahead of the game.

Road warrior. I am in the repair business. We fix what engineers manage not to understand. The other guy has it right. Supply AND demand. My business stays in business if people come in the door and leave me money. That's how I pay my bills. If there are more of them coming in than my present staff can service, I HIRE in order to secure and build my business. It doesn' matter how I feel or who's in office trying to blow smoke into my lowest oriface. CONSUMERS are job-makers. People caught in the devil's bargain called life with only the resources they manage to make themselves. Political leaders and ecomomics engineers seem yet to understand or communicate the steadfast simplicity of this equation. They can't possibly be unaware of it. "Jobs overseas" is because labor markets elsewhere can and will do more for less than their domestic counterparts. Few of us escape some part of the blame for our current economic crisis. Try getting elected on THAT platform!

I would have not have bailed out GM and Chrysler, I would have had them go through the normal process of Bankruptcy. They would have emerged as smaller leaner, and more profitible companies. (note that Chrysler under Fiat is now doing much better then GM.). Privite companies run things better then the Government or Unions. And the Taxpayers don't get the shaft like we did with GM.

The Stimulis did not create any real jobs, the jobs it created were temp. Count that the average cost per a new job was a half million dollars each, it was a waist of money. That amount of money should have paid for 2 million workers for more then 10 years, not 2. Now states have to come up with more money to keep them working. It would have been cheaper to just give every unemployeed person $20,000.00 for the year to help them out.

TARP to stablize the banks was Ok sence Freddy Mac, and Fanny Mae backed the loans the banks were holding (Freddy and Fanny should never been alowed to offer these types of securities), which proved worthless. Most of the TARP money to banks has been paid back,

Good Morning to all, it was a great day yesterday. I had all the LIBs at my neck. We all have our views but unfortunately the LIBs always thing they are the chosen.

Now to the point. How Ironic that what brought down the GOP might be the very thing that brings down the Dems/President Obama.

Of the two, Obama is carrying more of a political burden because, as the guy in charge, he is saddled with a lumbering economic recovery. Romney can largely blame the incumbent — just as Obama, as a candidate, benefited from blaming President George W. Bush.

Quoted from FR, but of course the Libs will find something wrong with it.

The difference is that Obama put forward concrete plans during his first campaign for president, ROmney hasn't. Heck he won't even answer questions about why firing more teachers and policemen is a good idea.

"Hope and Change" mixed with "Im not bush" are not concrete plans.

The problem with Obama's concrete plans were they sunk to the bottom of the sea, the minute he took office. His Healing the division, turned out to Expand it more. His posting new bills for 72 hours before voting on them, turn out to be locking up the Democrat senate for 72 hours behind closed doors to pass the bills. His Closing Gitmo, turned out to be closing it to the media, so no one will notice it. His Idea of working with Business, is to take campain contrbutions from them and put them in cabinet postions (Czars), so they can finance him and not pay taxes. To create more jobs, bring in College professors to create new jobs, (in theory at least). The things he as done, Getting out of Iraq (mostly advisors (20K) will still be there). Ended the Depression, after a year, (counting that unemployment was over 9%, no jobs to be found, and banks are't lending. and more people are out of work then when he took office. I would say he has been a very successful president, and deserves 4 more years. (if I were a Democrat) but I am glad I am not. I figure Romney can not do any worse then Obama has done so far.

it's all Romney has to do... just run commercials of the failed economy and Barry's insensitive comment about shovel ready jobs.

If you rely on the government for 100% of your income, and you are good for nothing... Then you should not be allowed to vote.. If you can't pass a drug test, you should get nothing...

So, a vet, who fought and killed, for YOU,and had his legs and an arm blown off for his efforts...FOR YOU, in your opinion, he should not be allowed to vote??? After all, in your opinion, he's good for nothing, and getting 100% of his income through the govt.

Seriously?? Drug Test (Wizz Quizz) in order to vote or get anything????? Really??? Do you have stock in the drug testing industry???

Personally, I think Mittens should be wizz quizzed.......must be high on something, other than himself.

Too bad there is not an intelligence test for voters, I hear them blame this or that person, when it was a totally different govenment enity that was to blame. Years ago schools taught Govenment studys, I guess now they don't.

Yes, Vets should not only be allowed to vote, but helped if needed to do so. It is the right of every Citizen to vote, I just wish more would take the time to get informed and vote.

I do have a small problem with some issues though. If Property Tax issues are being voted on, I do think that only Property Owners (the ones that pay the tax) should only be allowed to vote on those issues. Only because non owners, then to vote for any increases because they do not have to pay for them. Kind of like Lets raise taxes on the rich since I am not rich they will not effect me. The same could be said for a tax on any group , others would vote to increase taxes if they are not in that group.

In the end we get what we voted for, and only the people are to blame, even more if they make the same mistake twice.

The biggest problem we have had for many years now is that people are not voting for anyone- they are voting against someone else. The economy still stinks. No one knows how to fix it. Romney is about as interesting as a fence post. Republicans are betting they can convince people they can do better (although I can't remember a time when they could) and democrats are trying to convince people they are on the right track. How unusual.

Most voting is voting for the lesser of 2 evils. Romney was not my first choice, but he like McCain made it to the top of the ticket. He is not a great speaker, like Obama, or Regan. The problem is we do not need a great speaker or someone to inspire us, we need someone who will take responsibility for the office of President. The person must make the hard decisions, and do what is right for the country, even though at times may not be popular. Even at the basic level I look at what both have done, and there are some major differances. Both have had their years at the top (Governer, and President) and I look at what they acheived, and did not. So to me it seems pretty clear that Romney has done much better then Obama, doing the job for which each was elected for.

I will be laughing instead of listening to the "cry baby" we have in the Oval Office right now. At least there will be a grown up in there come November.
