Subscribe to RSSRepublicans on Sunday renewed their attacks on the Obama administration over suspected leaks of classified security information, with one influential senator saying the Justice Department should appoint a special prosecutor to investigate.
Among the government secrets leaked to the media in recent months were reports on U.S. cyber warfare against Iran, procedures for targeting militants for drone attacks and the existence of a double agent who penetrated a militant group in Yemen.
Republicans have also criticized the administration for disclosing details of the Navy SEAL team that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a raid on his Pakistan hideout last year.
"Our intelligence people say this is the worst breach they've ever seen," Senator John McCain, senior Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" program.
"It's very clear that this information had to come from this administration. It couldn't have come from anywhere else," McCain said. "This needs a special counsel - someone who is highly independent of the Justice Department."
While government leaks are a staple of Washington political life, the issue has taken on a special significance ahead of the November 6 election, with some Republicans charging that the leaks appear calculated to boost the President Barack Obama's re-election prospects.
Independence questioned
Obama has reacted with indignation. "The notion that my White House would purposely release classified national security information is offensive," he said on Friday."
Asked about Obama's remarks, Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said, "I take the president at face value" and that she did not believe information was leaked to help Obama.
"The investigation has to be non-partisan, it's got to be vigorous and it's got to move ahead rapidly," she told the CBS program "Face the Nation."
Attorney General Eric Holder announced late Friday that he had appointed two chief federal prosecutors to lead an investigation into the leaks.
The investigation would be headed by U.S. Attorneys Ronald Machen Jr. of Washington, D.C., and Rod Rosenstein of Maryland, who would be "fully authorized to prosecute criminal violations discovered as a result of their investigation," Holder said.
"Good start, maybe, but we need to find out if they'll have that independence," Mike Rogers, chairman of the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, told "Face the Nation."
He said his panel conducted a preliminary review of the "parade of leaks" that raised serious questions.
"Many asked the question, me included: 'Can you have the U.S. attorney, assigned through the attorney general, investigate something that is clearly going to be at the most senior levels of all of the executive branch?" said Rogers.
"Some of the leaks and the public leaks are self-described aides or people who were in the situation room - that's a pretty small but pretty important group of people," he said.
McCain ratcheted up the pressure by calling for a probe by a prosecutor with special powers, independent of the Justice Department.
"I have great respect for the two individuals that were appointed. But this - if it is, and it certainly is, the most egregious breach of intelligence in anybody's memory - that certainly requires a special counsel who is completely independent, someone with credibility ...," he told CNN.
Some special counsels, such as Patrick Fitzgerald who conducted an investigation into the leak of the identity of a covert CIA operative that led to the conviction of a senior aide to former Vice President Dick Cheney on obstruction and perjury charges, have been accused of conducting witch-hunts.

Obama is a fiscal disaster and we have over 5 TRILLION in new debt, and .40 cents of every dollar being spent by the Federal Govt. is borrowed. This is not a success story, it is a disaster in the making and the CBO (Congressional Budget Office) stated so just the other day. NOT SUSTAINABLE !!!
How about getting back on TOPIC- Intellegence leaks. Regardless of who's President it is extremely dangerous for classified, sensitive information to just "get out". It is imperative to find out who's doing the leaking and get the place tightened down. Knowing that there was "unprecidented" access to classifed information provided to two Hollywood directors whom are making a movie about the Bin Laden mission (to the best of my knowledge releasing later this year), so it does appear that there is some complacency within the administration for handing out intel for publicity. That's not a good thing.
Some other things that get me- If the NYT, etc. get information about the President's "kill list", would it be on them to check with the administration? I think they did and weren't stopped from using it. I believe the administration then gave them more information about how the President demands that it all go through him. So they bolstered the story with more information.
Intel is called that for a reason- not everyone gets to know about it. It's your strategic advantage in battle. Imagine just how useful it would be if there was a declaration by the leader of a country that while the war was moving on slowly and advances were being made that their country would be pulling out on a schedule (and then show the calendar). The other side would take some notes, figure out when they could make the most demoralizing attacks, slow down and regroup, then take over when the heat's off. Oh yeah, we did that too. Never mind.

This information is being intentially leaked and we need an independent counsel to investigate. Holder has proven he can't be impartial and in his adminstation justice is not blind.

Thanks for trying to get this back on topic. Concerning the leaks, it does sound like a special prosecutor is needed. Personally, I do not see Holder being objective - I think he's more likely to stonewall at every opportunity.
I do understand the "witch hunt" concerns with a special prosecutor, and I think there is some validity to those concerns, but I think getting to the bottom of the situation is more important. We're not talking about fairly benign things like corruption of funding projects, we're talking about national security issues that can cost people their lives.

What's positive about leaking information that can harm Americans? Remember Valerie Plame? That was a blown out of proportion bunch of BS that was nowhere near the seriousness of these current leaks.

Did anyone consider that the leaks could be coming from a Republican on the intelligence committee to implicate the Obama administration?
After all it is an election year, and nothing would surprise me since Republicans vowed before Obama was sworn in to totally obstruct his agenda, want him to fail, and want him to be a one term President.
Pretty sad to think that we have an administration that feels leaking intelligence information is necessary to show that Obama does have some level of competence for the job. It is hard to understand that mentality since the leaks compromise our capabilities and alienate those working with us, which makes Obama even less competent to handle foreign policy. Makes me wonder if the drone landing in Iran was really by accident.
This country has just taken a beating for the past 3.5 years under Obama, and supporters claim he is the smartest president ever? How then do you explain that whenever he is off the teleprompter like last weeks news conference, he says something everyone else has to try and explain like the private sector is doing just fine? If Obama had a record to run on, he would. Yes we can is now why we couldn't, and there is never any shortage of blame or excuses. Obama was simply unqualified for the job, and confidence erodes daily.
I always find it amazing that when there is a special prosecutor who finds wrong doing in a Republican administration, the SP is accused of conducting an out of control witch hunt. The very same investigation, even conducted by the same prosecutor, if it is against the Democrats, will lead to the stale, pale, male party to state that the investigator is doing a great job and only going where the evidence leads.
While Patrick Fitzgerald (who prosecuted Dick Cheney's aid) was a great prosecutor and probably one of the most non-political special prosecutors who has ever existed, it is unlikely any future SP will be as good. More likely is that any such SP will end up being a political hack and use the office of SP to do political damage. Given the history of the office of the SP, unless there is some evidence that a serious crime which threatens the security of the US has been done by a high ranking US official, it is doubtful a SP will be needed or appointed. The current AG does not seem inclined to investigate to find such a crime.

I'll bet you can't quote anyone in the Bush Administration who said that Fitzgerald was conducting an "out of control witch hunt" in the Valerie Plame investigation. There were some very good questions as to why he continued his investigation after he knew who leaked the name. But he must have felt a need to after a man who was less than honest with him. I think you are full of BS. I do distinctly remember Kenneth Starr being demonized and called all sorts of names when he was conducting an investigation against a democrat.
I find it amazing that you twist things as far as you do. And I can see no reason to think our current Attorney General would do a good job of investigating anything about this administration.

The real problem with these so called leaks is this..it could have come from anyone in washington..most everyone in congress has clearance and could hand out leaks to anyone.Of course..the republicans have blamed Obama for all the debt Bush brought top this country. So far. the republicans have voted for nothing that would help this economy...they have however pushed for MORE tax cuts for their wealthy friends and donors. Most likely the real cause of any leaks is coming from the fact that there are way too many in washington today with access..Washington today is full of possibles for leaks..from those in congress to contractors..

I watched the senate Judiciary oversight committee on c-span this morning. Did any of you? The NYT article quotes senior DOJ officials. So prosecutors who report to senior DOJ personel isn't a problem for any of you? One Senator has never gotten an answer to a letter about gunwalking through his state from Eric Holder. This is the kind of behavior in Fast and Furious and Holder will not answer the letter from a senator through whose state these kinds of things were carried out. I'm very sure the citzens of his state want answers. I am one. I want answers since the border is 25 miles from my house. The senator from my previous state has complained about getting answers which consistently had to be retracted when new information came out from other sources. It just gives an impression that the DOJ isn't as independent as it needs to be in this case. I'm not a republican. But I am tired of the DOJ stalling the people constitutionally charged with their oversight. The representatives we elected to look after our interests.

These leaks could just as easily be from a Republican as a Democrat. In fact judging by all the noise they're making about it I have no doubt it was a Republican shill like McConnell, who leaked. He is being coyly silent about it.
Probably Tom Donilan, who i have heard all the conjecture point solely at this guy. From both parties and the pentagon. Head of NSA and leads all the daily presidential briefs. Worked previously as a vote counter.
Leaks have come on the Pakistany Doc, the Saudi that helped us,while he worked for the saudis, discover the bomb on the A/C overseas (who had to go into hiding from the saudis), the stuxnet virus, the seal team 6, etc, etc.
Somebody needs to find out who is doing this and get them out of the white house. Even Diane Fienstein is riled up and rightly so. Whoever is doing this is putting peopls lives at risk and needs to be removed.

The Plaime lady was riding a desk when she was outed as an agent and it was investigated witha special counsel. No lives at risk. This is MUCH worse. When the Plaime thing came up the Dems went nuts back then for a special counsel. She was riding a desk with no lives affected. Peoples lives are most definitely affected now and holder appoints one of Obamas donors and volunteers on his campaign to investigate, not a special counsel. Hey genius, when Plame was outed, so were all her contacts and the fellow CIA operatives, who once worked with her. Outing Valerie was a treasonous act. Also, have you ever stopped to wonder who forged the Niger papers, which were used as a prime reason to go to war? Obviously, there were factions that wanted the Iraq war in the worst way, who were willing to forge those documents. Did anyone ever wonder why no effort to uncover the forgers was made?
The prime candidates were neo conservatives working in the Pentagon under Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz. We didn't see any effort from Bush or Republicans, who had full control of the House, Senate, Judiciary and Presidency to see who was manufacturing a reason for war.
How is this even close to Valarie Flame's case? Some of you Neo-Cons have zelch sense of priority. Valarie's case involved International operatives on multiple levels. There are still claims that someof those operatives are still missing. The missing operatives or turned operatives are important, because every agent can lead to to other agents or their bosse through their history and their work. People associated with them are being silenced when identified... In another words what the previous administration team did could have easily cost America 10+ to 15+ years of African intel and infiltration.
So please stop with your made up accusations for the sake of political election. The Republican's willingness to give up our American operatives to help win recent elections can be easily traced back to Ronald Regan (Iran Hostage Crisis).

How can you possibly be so blind? There are details from high level meetings attended by a relatively limited number of people splashed all over the New York Times. Is it possible that no one in these meetings went directly to the press? Yes, but that still doesn't mean they didn't run their mouths to someone not at the meeting who then went to the press. They are still leaks. And if Obama doesn't have any better control over "his White House" it's just as bad as if it was a coordinated effort.
Personally, I do believe it was a coordinated effort to make him look "tough" although I'm sure he has insulated himself so well that some low level flunky will take the hit.

Corporateshill the last time this happened a senator wrote a letter DEMANDING a special independent prosecutor. A senator from Ill named Barack Obama. It was echoed by another senator this one named Joe Biden. So when it is a republican administration they were for a special prosecutor but when it is their administration they aren't. Too many people in too many states do not trust Eric Holder and the DOJ. If this investigation clears the White House they will not believe it any more than people believed the Warren Commission. I see Kevin Costner in a new movie.

I don't mean to break ranks here gentlemen but I always stand on a soapbox and claim to admit things or point out things that are not cool on the right. So staying true with that I must say: Libby was sentenced to 30 months for perjury and Bush commuted his term before he served any time. In the 1980's there were only 2 SEaL teams, one in North Carolina and one in San Diego, the US miltary needed a maritime anti terror unit to help combat the rise of terrorism such as the hijacking of the Achille Lauro. When the team was formed it was only the third one, and was and still is drawn from the elite of the elite SEals, but in an intelligent piece of warcraft the unit leaders named it team 6 to make the USSR think we had many more capable special operators than we actually did. The name team 6 was dropped shortly after then fall of the USSR and renamed "DevGru" short for SEal Development Group. That name has since been changed and we ( those of us without the proper security clearance) don't know it's actual name. Secondly those men were already forward deployed and fighting the Taliban when they killed bin Laden and therefore we already a target, and no one who participated in that raid died on that helicopter shootdown.
I would bet my hat that they will find that the leaks came from some high ranking Republican in the White House since this is an election year.
