Updated 11:47 a.m. - President Barack Obama urged Congress to pass stalled elements of his jobs plan, warning that severe cuts to government spending, combined with reverberations from Europe's economic downturn, could spend the U.S. economy into a tailspin.
At a press conference on Friday at the White House, the president offered his own kind of warning against deep and immediate cuts to government spending, which he said would only stall the pace of the recovery, and in turn, exacerbate the government's ability to address debt and deficits.
"We've got a couple of sectors in our economy that is still weak. Overall, the private sector has been doing a good job of creating jobs," Obama said. "The big challenge we have in our economy right now is state and local government hiring has been going in the wrong direction."
Romney condemns Obama as 'out of touch'
Losses of government jobs have been a major factor in lackluster hiring reports in recent months; the most recent monthly jobs report, released last Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, indicated that the economy added only 69,000 jobs last month -- a number well below expectations.

A major factor in the slowed pace of hiring, reports had indicated, were layoffs associated with government spending.
The debate over jobs and the mouting national debt have framed the general election campaign between Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor's team was quick to seize on the president's press conference, particularly his pronouncement that the private sector was doing "fine" versus public sector employees.
"The truth of the matter is that, as I said, we've created 4.3 million jobs over the last 27 months; over 800,000 just this year alone," Obama said. "The private sector is doing fine."
In response, Ryan Williams, a spokesman for Romney, said: "Today, President Obama inexplicably claimed that ‘the private sector is doing fine.’ But the 23 million Americans who are struggling for work are not ‘doing fine.’ Job creators and small businesses are not ‘doing fine.’ The middle class is not ‘doing fine.’ There is no denying that President Obama has been fundamentally hostile to job creators and his policies have prevented our economy from rebounding. America needs a president who understands the economy and knows how to get our country back on track."
Romney condemns Obama as 'out of touch'
Romney was set to speak late Friday morning in Iowa, where he was spending most of the day campaigning. House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor scheduled an afternoon press conference on Capitol Hill to respond to the president, as well.
Obama avoided explicitly political barbs toward Romney or Republicans in Congress, but today's press conference came againist an explicitly political backdrop. The president's re-election team has been reeling from last week's jobs report, one of only a handful remaining federal reports that could sway voters' perceptions of the central issue of the campaign: the economy.
European nations' struggles to address a growing financial and monetary crisis have only slowed already-tight markets, and Obama was sure to note the impact on U.S. businesses.

But the overarching purpose of the press conference was to urge action by Congress, which has struggled to reach agreement on only a few elements of the jobs plan.
"They left most of the jobs plan just sitting there," Obama said of congressional gridlock in advancing elements of his jobs plan, which he first unveiled last fall. "And in light of the headwinds we're facing right now, I urge them to reconsider. Becuase there's steps that we can take right now to get people back to work."
But given Republican control of the House and Democratic control of the Senate -- and the deep differences that separate them -- action on any part of the plan seems unlikely. Cantor outlined the summer agenda for the House a few weeks ago, which included more politically-themed votes to frame the election this fall than advancing the president's agenda.
Republicans have long complained that much of the president's recent policy actions have been motivated by election year politics; the GOP has extended that claim to recent leaks of national security victories, suggesting that the White House might have released details of top-secret operations in order to aid Obama's re-election.
The president called that suggestion "offensive," and suggested that his administration has a "zero tolerance" policy for leakers, who could face possible prosecution if they're discovered.
"The notion that my White House would purposely release classified national security information is offensive. It's wrong," Obama said.
Obama declined to comment on an reported cyber-sabotage operation against the Iranian nuclear program, as well as a reported "kill list" containing the names of high-value targets that he allegedly supervises.
He also would neither confirm nor deny any existing investigation into leaks, saying that his administration always looks to identify the source of any intelligence leak.

You need to look up the Community Re-investment Act. It mandated that banks loan to people who could not afford to pay the loans back. As ACORN's attorney, Obama argued for the mandates. Nearly 50% of the (bad) loans were made to minorities. And all that bad financial paper, caused the economy to collapse. Thank Clinton and Reno for your economic troubles, they caused it.

Maybe Obama can go back to college and take freshman economics...what he currently knows about the economy has clearly been the results of skipping those classes, or maybe he was still high from all the drugs. government hiring of people to fix infrastructure has limited growth. Private companies must hire in order to produce goods/services and turn profits....thus allowing these companies to re-invest and hire still more people.
We need these politicians (all of them from all parties) to really take a hard look at themselves. they cannot keep bouncing back and forthe like this.
Hell, I will take the job as President and promise to only hold office for four years. I bet with a me in ther (not obsessed about a 2nd term)...i would put both parties in their place and call them out for the fools they are in front of the nation. A little public humiliation can go a long way to goet someone to improve their job performance.

Why doesn't he just give another $500 million away to another bunch of his pals like he did with Solyndra to create more of his green jobs, we all know how that worked out. And what about all of those "shovel ready jobs" his previous stimulus plans were supposed to fund!?!? The money gets poured into bureaucracies set up to manage the money and no jobs other than far overpaid government administrators ever get created. By the time they get done setting up the plush offices and organization to manage the money there is no money left to spend on actual project that would create jobs.

sorry but anyone with an economics degree will tell you the only way to fix the US economy is to end all free trade agreements.
we need to do two things as a nation.
!) end all free trade agreements and limit imports so that goods will have to be made in the US. If we do this unemployment will drop and more tax revenue will be raised by the additional workers. ( by the way germany is one of the few countries that does this their economy is going strong)
2) rebuild our infrastructure, educate the masses, and get off the dependency of oil thru new technology which we can export to the rest of the world.
being able to buy cheap goods from china might be nice for some people, but the downfall of this is higher unemployment, less tax revenue and less capital kept within our nation. we were doing well as a nation when we had high tarrifs, limited imports and people working!

No. Green energy is more expensive than oil. And at the moment we happen to be broke. Once the economy recovers, we will have no excuse to not move towards green energy.

I'd love to know what all of the Monday morning quarterbacks would actually do in the President's place - and when I hear you spewing something about cutting taxes further or cutting government spending I'll point you back at our current deficits and at the fact that our unemployment rate would be a full 1% lower without the current government cutbacks.

The past is or quide and when you tax the net profit not gross profit owners dump their money back into their business so they don't have to pay taxes and in return creates jobs on a large scale. Everyone else has to pay more the more they make. So why not the Rich??? Force The Mitts of the world to put their money back into Americas economy.

Speaking of almost4 years, the Obama administration has failed to produce a Constitutionally mandated budget during his entire term of office. Obama's "offerings" are so horrible that even members of his own party have yet to give a single vote for it ! He is financially incompetent to lead this country at a time when our country is $16 trillion in debt and still rising rapidly ! Forty cents out of every dollar goes for debt service.

@Ben.... The Gov isn't hiring people to fix infrastructure. They would be paying to have infrustructure built/repaired. These projects would be 'bid' out to the private sector to perform. The private sector then would hire people to perform the work. Infrastructure maintenance is a long term commitment.

The previous 5 presidents running for re-election had a total, all of them together, of 94 fund raisers. 10 months for each is 50 months. Obama has almost doubled their 50 month total in just over 5 months. Thats why you hear of all the non stop fund raisers.

Pro-Obama or Pro-Romney!! Regardless of who wish to support, as far as the economy is concerned it will become more challenging. With technology progressing fast teaching jobs, factory jobs, political and legal jobs, state and federal jobs, farm jobs, medicine, will reduce by as much as 50% within the next 10 years. The pattern is set by postal workers, and some schools. Then the engineers and technologist who developed the technology to reduce work force will be fired by the robots. Obama or Romney can do nothing about it.
We are inching towards a system that will not require presidents, congress, political menace, lawyers, and justices. "Direct Democracy" is around the corner.
JonSmith ..... tax policy is NOT the reason we can't pay our bills. We can't pay our bills because ... we have too many bills. We spend waaaay too much. Just entitlements and interest on our debt takes up 70% of the money we take in.
Take the Buffett tax BO espouses to fix all our ills. It would take in 4 or 5 Billion a year. Maybe. So instead of having a 1.3 Trillion deficit we would have a 1.295 Trillion deficit. Thats how little affect taxes would have on our federal govt's spending habits.

Also, the jobs era of the 90's you talk about were in the late 90's mostly with bills passed from a republican house and senate. The reason for surplus? Those bills had the lowest SPENDING/gdp in the last 40 years.
The last deficit before the realestate bust and credit freeze in 2007 was 160 Billion. Yes, only 160 defict and had been going DOWN for the last 4 years from just over 400 billion. Now we are hitting 1.3 Trillion + every year.

I agree that the Buffet Tax is just a political ploy, but it isn't as easy as just "end the entitlements" - I don't think anyone that proposes that actually understands what that would actually do to the economy. Maybe "reign in entitlement growth" is more appropriate? (I'm basically saying if you did away with social security, medicare, welfare, etc. you'd find that 1) you'd have a lot of poor, sick, hungry people. 2) the economy would absolutely tank because of 1).

Don't be a Moron ..... I never said anything about doing away with entitlements. Never heard anybody say that. I have heard quite a few say they need to be reformed or changed. The total of entitlements spending in the 80's was UNDER 30% of our gdp. Today they are 70% of our revenues. That is by far and away, nothing even close, to what drives our debt. People are living 20 years longer than when these started and it is not set up to handle it. Boomers retiring now at the rate of 10,000 a day and growing.
If you want an easy number to look at for tax effect on income, look at cap gains revenue as its easy to track. Not a "projection" someone brings up. There have been 4 changes in the last 30 years. 1 up and 3 down. Each time the rate went down CBO projected (thers that word) a loss in revenue and the 1 time up "projected" and gain. Each time the CBO was WRONG. The reason is they use static numbers and don't take into account behavior when people are taxed more or less. I will get the numbers if you want. Also look at the increase in revenues after the tax policy change was in effect in May 2003.

Ok this is the problem with his jobs bill, he wants to take money that we do not have to hire workers that have salaries that are paid by state and local taxes. We have been spending money on infrastructure. The other truth is if they would have left the money that is supposed to be used for infrastructure alone and actually spent it on what it is supposed to be spent on our infrastructure would not be as bad as it is.
This jobs bill will work exactly like the last one did, it will force the states to hire people that they cannot afford to pay long term. Causing a pull back within two years.
Keynesian spending only works if we need a short term boost to our economy to get it going. We actually need a long term boost to get things going again.
To say that we need to depend on government spending to keep our economy going is very short sighted. We are already too in debt for that. Look up the world GDP then compare it to our national debt, then tell me where we are going to get more money from?
We also need to factor in that at some point we need to pay down this debt, which will be another drag on our economy.
For the Keynesian model to truly work correctly we would have needed to have a surplus not a debt.
The only true way for us to increase tax revenue is to increase the number of workers paying taxes. Increasing the amount of workers who receive their salaries from tax revenue is a dead end.
We have increase government hiring, but it was not sustainable at the state level. That is why overall government employment has gone down. The states have to have a balanced budget.
Closing our borders to outside trade will not work either. Honestly for actual growth we need to build more things here for our own use. We need to change the tax laws so businesses can keep their money over a business cycle. Just because they made money today does not mean that they will make it tomorrow. If they have a cushion to work off of they would not need to do these massive lay offs.

Don't be ........ here are the numbers for the one cap gains tax increase that took place in 1987. It was raised from 20% to 28%. The year before in 1986 the total revenue was 327 Billion. CBO gave its estimates of increased revenue based on STATIC numbers. Meaning everything from an investmant standpoint and dollars stayed the same under their assumption. That's all they are allowed to do by the way.
For the next ten years the revenues taken in were LOWER than the 1986 level. 1996 took in 260 Billion. Then under Clinton that cap gains rate was LOWERED back to 20% (yes a Clinton tax cut) in 1997 and the revenue more than doubled in 3 years to 552.6 Billion in 1999. Just because a tax rate goes down, doesn't always mean lower revenue. You have to factor in behavior.

Fannie/Freddie were only responsible for about 16% of the proliferation of high risk mortgages. Nor did they ever determine who those mortgages were given to and who they weren't given to. They merely provided lenders with funds.

They also had around 2 Trillion in Securities exposure. And their biggest exposure was what they GAURENTEED, not owned, at about 3.5 Trillion.
The total exposure, not just what they actually owned, was over 7 Trillion. They were basically like the biggest hedge fund on the planet at the time and a bit out of control.

There was much talk about lost revenue due to the tax cuts, which is partially correct, after 2004 they started climbing and ended up above the historical average. You will also notice that total spending by percentage of GDP was below the historical average.
Just as President Clinton was leaving office we were in an economic slow down. We also had two major hurricanes and 9/11.
I will agree that we spent too much money on the wars.

Agreed, the government mostly wasn't at fault. If you back the mortgage mess up to it's most basic component it was poor underwriting. Mortgage companies were spitting these crap loans out at a tremendous pace. I was a partner building at the time , 2004 when i saw it starting.
I would walk people through a home and they would give me an absolutely terrible credit history. Then my mortgage broker would call back and say "we got em a loan". My jaw would drop. We called em "liar loans". Stated income, no down, all kinds of crazy things. I still remember my banker that same year telling me its gonna blow up. We would also joke saying we can get that one back at auction in a year. No idea it would be as bad as it was.
They started packaging these and wall st got a big appetitte. Loans packaged historically can take somewhere around an 8% default rate and these things were busting at up to a 50% default rate. Some would have 1000 or more and AIG and the like had no idea how to unwind or value these things when they popped.
Very few, including ratings agencies, knew what was the value there they just went historical.
Fannie/Freddie could and should have been nuetered some and not allowwed to play in that game. It was tried in 2004/2005 to reel them in some but failed in the senate.
Since our president is a Socialist/Communist without any business experience at all, he thinks that getting the economy going means creating more public sector jobs. In reality, getting the economy going means easing up on regulations and taxes on the private sector so they can do what they do best.....create jobs. Two points for you to consider"
1) You said it is Congress' responsibility to prepare a budget. That is true. The President, however, is to submit a budget proposal for Congress to act upon and change as deemed necessary. Last year's budget proposal was so bad that it was voted down 97 to 0 in the Senate...... garnering NO SUPPORT from his own party. This year's offering calls for even more spending (of money we don't have), and Harry Reid will not allow it to come up for a vote ! That is not the LEADERSHIP our country deserves from the White House !
2) It is also the responsibility of Congress to pass the laws and the Chief Executive is to see they are carried out. It is not intended for President Obama, or any other Prseident to DICTATE what legislation is to be passed. At this time, the House of Representatives has passed a significant number of bills they feel will help the economy rebound. Harry Reid in the Senate, however, is sitting on them and will not even ALLOW THEM TO BE BROUGHT UP FOR CONSIDERATION ! Who do you think Reid is politically aligned with ? That would be Obama, so it is clear Mr. Obama is only really concerned with "what he wants" and not is not concerned with the Constitutionally mandated SEPARATION OF POWERS.

Neither the Senate, nor the House is required to submit a budget. The President submits a budget every year, and then the Congress, thru its "Advice and Consent" mandate is supposed to approve the budget. President Obama has submitted a budget, on time, as required, each year he's been President. The House has also submitted a budget because they don't like the President's budget. The Senate, by Republican leverage, had Obama's budget brought up for a vote. The Senate, including most Democrats, voted against the President's budget, because Democrats knew the Republicans would never have passed consent in the House and they did not want to be constricted by something that was never going to be approved. That's where we are, and have been, for the last 3 years.
Because the President hasn't given in to Republicans and given them EVERYTHING they want (so much for Republican leadership), the Republicans have blamed him for lacking leadership. If the president doesn't capitulate totally with the Republicans (as what happened with the "Grand Bargain" the Teaparty wouldn't accept last year) the Republicans attempt to block all legislation the President wants. in order to get some things passed, the President has given in to some of the demands the Republicans want (extended Bush tax cuts for the rich) so that the President can get some things he wants (unemployment insurance extensions, middle class tax cuts, and the payroll tax holiday extension). That is also where we have been for 3 years.

Then the house and senate take their 2 bills to conference committee to merge the 2. The only problem is that the senate hasn't submitted one to be able to go to committee. Which is why we have had no budget for the last 3 years. This is all required by law by the way.
First of all, Obama had a plan to reduce total unemployment by roughly 9%. And by the way, the job creators are not the wealthiest Americans, or even the small businesses. They are me and you; the American consumer. And if, by the way, Romney was referring to the wealthy by the term "job creators," then he was wrong. The wealthy are doing just fine; better than ever, in fact. They could use a tax increase; the poor and the middle class need help, and spending on an infrastructure bill would greatly help them.
Actually, job creators have been considerably helped by Obama, thanks to tax breaks and job increases. And by the way, his policies helped create 4.3 million jobs. Pretty helpful economically.
Look, people. The private sector is fine, when compared to the public sector. Government jobs have been shed like an old snakeskin. What we need is a massive jobs bill, something that will put millions of Americans back to work. Obama's Jobs Act is a little light, but considering that it will create up to 2 million jobs it's just what we need. We need to rebuild our infrastructure, and we also need more teachers and policemen keeping us safe and well-educated. Face it; we need more government jobs. Class sizes are skyrocketing, and consumer demand is lackluster. I say put $100 billion into an infrastructure into an infrastructure bank to leverage private capital for fixing our roads, while spending an extra $200 billion a year for ten years to aid the states and fix our infrastructure. We can pay for it by raising taxes on the wealthy, and our economy will improve substantially. This our only hope to fix this economy, people; all the tax cuts in the world won't help us.

What we need are FEWER public employees and MORE private sector employees. The federal government should NOT be subsidizing state and local employees. The federal government's role should be to be as small as possible to keep taxes as low as possible to spur growth in the private sector (which then provides a vibrant tax base for state and local governments, allowing them to pay the people they hire).
The democrats have economics completely backward. Their strategies to raise taxes kill private sector jobs, which erodes local tax bases, which puts more public workers in need of federal assistance. The sad thing is, they KNOW this and count on it. Their goal is to have as many as possible dependent on the federal government. The largest power play in the history of the USA.

Okay, first of all government employees CREATE private sector jobs via demand. If you fire government workers, you lower demand and thus jobs are lost. Had we retained the 600,000 state employees that were fired during Obama's term, unemployment would be a full percentage point lower. We need to both hire more government jobs and more private sector jobs. This would increase demand two-fold, boosting job creation. And btw, class sizes are growing and police departments in many states are under-staffed due to a lack of public employees; hiring them back would help boost demand, create more private jobs, and help repair our education system.
FWI, taxes are at their lowest levels in a half-century. Cutting them even further would increase the deficit. And businesses don't hire because of low taxes; they hire when demand is increasing. Creating private sector jobs would require government spending, either on rebuilding roads and bridges or in hiring government workers. Both would increase demand, resulting in even more job creation. Cutting government jobs would simply reduce demand and decrease private sector job creation. The loss of public-sector jobs is a major drag on the economy; unless we hire more government workers and private employees via infrastructure spending, we are never going to get out of this anemic recovery.

We need real jobs that create goods and services that people are willing to pay for not make work jobs that we are force to pay for through taxes and government induced inflation. The stimulus bill was suppose to solve our unemployment problems but according to an administration report, unemployment has been worse than if the stimulus were never passed. This idea of increased government spending does not work because with such a high trade deficit, money being injected into the economy just leaks out and we are left with more debt. Without conditions, the President promised that the 2012 federal deficit will not exceed 229.27 billion dollars. I want the President to explain how his promise is going to be kept.

He also doesn't understand that state and city means state and city, not federal government. The states are starting to realize that the bigger their taxpayer funded workforce is the more money it needs to support it, and that they don't have the money. Plus, people realize that these jobs don't create a dime's worth of wealth, but just take money from those who are trying to create wealth. But, that is just Obama's plan to further destroy the country and have everyone dependent on government.
As long as the government employee pension funds continue to exist local governments will always need bailing out. Public employees need to be treated like private employees, a 401k with matching contributions from the employers (taxpayers), and then Social Security and Medicare like all private employees. Why to Government employees deserve so much at the expense of the middle class.

But then, why not add them in now, just to make the President's numbers appear worse.
So now you like to try, "how many people were working before Obama became President and now", however, 10,000 people a day now are reaching 65 and retiring each day (and will be growing more each year as the baby boomers keep retiring). That, obviously, will lower the number working today, but doesn't have a thing to do with the number of people wanting to work. Funny what numbers can do.....

Companies are not hiring, therefore people are not spending, so all that is left to get things going is the government. No one is saying grow the government beyond what is actually needed.
Right now we don't have enough teachers, out infrastructure is deteriorating, etc. If the government hires those teachers and creates construction jobs (and ripple effect from that) building schools, roads and bridges, all those people will have money to spend. That spending will create demand that will cause companies to hire.

Then explain to us what's been going on since the 2010 mid-term that gave the GOP/TP an historic majority in the House and about split even in the Senate.

Grow government MORE by giving MORE federal money to the states and local governments so they can pay their people. Perhaps if we focus more on cutting the Federal government and cutting regulations, we can lower taxes and put more people to work in the private sector. But when your goal is to grow government as big as you can, then your solution to everything is more government spending....

You wanna know why debt is so high??? Two things: Bush tax cuts, and recession. Bush tax cuts cost roughly $380 billion a year, while the recession adds another $500 or $600 billion. That's nearly a trillion right there. It isn't liberal policies that are bankrupting us; it's conservative policies. Liberals don't advocate for massive tax cuts, especially during a good economy and during wartime. Liberals don't declare wars and then don't pay for them. Liberals don't deregulate industries that caused financial crises.
Government jobs equate prosperity because they create private sector jobs. Jobs in the private sector are mainly created by demand; if we hire more government workers, demand will increase, and so will the need to hire more private sector workers. Essentially, government workers create the demand that create private sector jobs.
You do realize that we had the largest economic expansion during the 50s and 60s because of the NEW DEAL??? You know, the massive program that established much of our welfare structure that many of you right-wingers want to undermine??? Here's the deal; none of those Presidents, except maybe Clinton, had to deal with an extremist party across the aisle, and Clinton, in order to get things done, had to essentially sell himself out to the GOP. The GOP today are far to the right, farther than they were before Reagan, before Bush, even before the 2008 election. They even concocted a plot to sabotage the president!!! McConnell himself said that his number one goal was to get Obama out.
Quite simply, Congress is too polarized. For one thing, it is election year. For another, the GOP have attacked everything that Obama did. He supported cap and trade, a Republican idea for global warming, and they attacked him for it. He used the individual mandate, a conservative idea for healthcare reform, and they bashed him for it. He even stuffed his jobs bills with tax cuts, and they STILL attack him for it. He offered the GOP a deficit reduction deal with $3 trillion in cuts and $1 trillion in revenues, and they said no. They even declined the Bowles Simpson package. How can you work with people who won't compromise with you??? Boehner even had the balls to threaten to hold up the debt ceiling again, and he demanded more fiscal austerity, yet took revenues off the table. How the hell is that fair??? The GOP will simply not work for Obama unless he gives them 98% of what they wanted. Last time I checked, that is not a compromise; that's a concession. The ONLY way Obama can get anything done is if he sells himself out, and whenever he did that he got hit by disgruntled liberals and joyous conservatives. There is no way that Obama can work with the GOP; every time he tried he got the rug pulled out from under him. There is NO compromise with the extremist right-wingers in the GOP.
Well. the Democrats simply don't want to be painted as tax-and-spend liberals, which is a shame because it makes people think that they have no backbone. Plus Obama did everything in his power to negotiate with the GOP; and all he got was a kick in the butt. Many of his greatest accomplishments were compromises: stimulus contained dozens of tax breaks and was only a fraction of the size that was originally planned. Obamacare: conservative alternative (individual mandate) to universal healthcare. Debt deal: had $3 trillion in cuts and $1 trillion in revenues. And btw, Republicans regained the House and narrowed the Democratic majority in the Senate because the American people were tired of the slow recession and were scared by the GOP about Obamacare.
Okay, when did Obama say that he wouldn't work with the GOP??? Practically every major accomplishment of his was a compromise, from healthcare reform to the stimulus to deficit reduction. Now, technically during a recession you wouldn't raise taxes, but since we have a large deficit and a bunch of bitching deficit hawks the only credible way to pay for stimulating spending packages is to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans. We can use that money to rebuild roads and bridges and schools, creating millions of jobs. And Obama would only seek to save the jobs of TEACHERS and FIREFIGHTERS; last time I checked, they weren't bureaucrats. And who cares about bloated bureaucracies???? We can deal with them when the recession is over. Now, we need as many working people as we can get, and government jobs are as good as anything because they stimulate demand to create PRIVATE SECTOR JOBS. If you want to increase job creation, spend money on infrastructure or on hiring teachers; that's your only option.

A government job is a real job. A person gets a paycheck, which that person uses to pay bills and buy things. This generates taxes which are revenue. The more people that have jobs and can buy more stuff, creates more of a demand for stuff, which results in more jobs being created.
Cutting government jobs causes higher unemployment, people buying less stuff and paying less in taxes, resulting in a loss of revenue and less of a demand for stuff, which results in less jobs being created.
If you add public sector jobs, you are in fact growing governments. BLS says that federal public jobs have increased since 2008. It is true that state and local governments have declined which is because they have to technically balance their books. The federal jobs ONLY materialized when we borrowed money to produce a stimulus.
Back when the feds gave states money to keep public sector jobs, St Paul MN as I recall, hired for police officers with the money they received from the feds. So those jobs were temporarily created on the backs of the private sector that must pay taxes in order to fund government jobs. Those jobs were promised based on the funding for about 3 years. The issue going forward is that the city does not have the money to support those jobs unless they cut somewhere else or they raise taxes to absorb those new hires.
When you heard that some states didn't want the stimulus money it was because in the near future when that money was used up, then what? There was no way based on the hole most states were in that they could absorb more personnel going forward with getting revenue from somewhere else.
If increasing the public sector was a good idea, then Greece would be in tiptop shape since they hired everybody's brother for those jobs while the private sector languished.
In the private sector, a type of bureaucracy occurs, which is what I call building an empire. So you have a director that wants to look more important than she/he is and they hire more and more employees to build up that department. As long as they can get funding each year for this expansion it occurs. It isn't just the public sector that wastes money and over spends by hiring unnecessary personnel. The difference is the private sector makes a profit and so when things get tough or their products fail to sell as expected, they cut spending quickly. Down goes the empires.
The public sector never voluntarily reduces itself because they can always raise taxes. I have worked for both the government and the private sector. Big difference.
Obama is mathematically challenged. He is also out of ideas. He will be replaced because now with security leaks that apparently do not phase him, he is behaving desperate. We are seeing a very low point in our nation with regards to moral fortitude.
Wish it would do some good, but it won't. Too many are more concerned about their side winning a popularity contest. They'd rather see all us peasants living in tent cities alongside our crumbling roads, than do their jobs and work for us.

Jumpmaster did you ever bother to actually read the jobs package Obama has been screaming about? While I will agree there are some good points in it- penalties for ostracizing people currently unemployed, tax breaks for hiring veterans, the meat of it is terrible. Companies will get a $4000 (I think that's right - it may have been $5k) tax break for each long term unemployed person they hire up to $40,000. Note, it did NOT specify full time or part time. To keep it simple, say a company decides it can spend $200,000 per year on new positions. Now, they can hire 5 people full time at $40,000 a year and get a tax break of $20,000 AND have to pay for benefits for those people. So they end up after the tax break spending $180,00 plus bennies out of pocket for those 5 people. OR they can hire 10 people part time at 20 hours per week, paying out $20,000 per year average to each and get $40,000 back in tax breaks without the added expense of benefits, resulting in a flat expense after tax breaks of $160,000. Sure $20,000 per year without benefits is better than $0 but in the long run this does NOT help the average person. Modify the jobs bill to actually HELP and then if Congress won't pass it start screaming at them. Better yet, let's see what the House and Senate can work together to come up with. We haven't been betrayed by the GOP, we haven't been betrayed by the Dems, not the House nor Senate nor even the President. We've been betrayed by ALL of those we put in office to make decisions that are in our best interests as a country. If we continue to re-elect these same yahoos, we will then be guilty of betraying ourselves as well.

I am 68 years young and so I have seen my share of Presidents come and go and this current one is hell bent on dividing us. I agree with you that the majority of politicians in Washington are only there for what they can get personally out of it but I have never seen a president so bent on keeping us divided, whether it is on party lines, racial, age(since we as seniors cost them so much), religion, poor/rich and last but not least women's rights. Term limits and no salary for the rest of their lives after they are out of office is a good start. But we still need to be pulled together and led by a strong president which we do not have at this time.

Chuck, you apparently missed the news articles over the past few weeks about our exit agreement with Afghanistan. Afghanistan is demanding $4 billion per year for 10 years after we exit in 2014. Obama agreed to it, then tried to get the rest of the big name countries to contribute. He got less than $1 billion in commitments, leaving the US on the hook for a base $3 billion PLUS the estimated 2.5% interest as it will be borrowed money at that!

Wade, I believe you may be mis-informed. Believe is referring to FEDERAL taxes - ones that go to the federal government. Sales tax is basically a city and state tax, and has no impact in most cases on the federal budget. The same is partly true for utilities, though a very, very small portion do go to federal. Social security taxes are only paid if you actually happen to be lucky enough to be employed right now - many are not. A friend of mine who's a single mom has always had low paying jobs. Not only does she get her tax deductions returned when she files, she walks away with an extra $4k almost every year that she never paid in, as an earned income credit. Chances are that offsets ANY money she pays in through various means during the year in taxes.

Obama's comments prove he is financially illiterate. Public sector jobs are paid for through taxation (income redistribution). They do not improve an economy because you are just moving money from one pocket to another. If you increase the number of public sector workers it can only be paid for by increasing taxes or increasing the deficit. Private sector job creation creates new wealth, new taxes and growth. To declare that the private sector is doing just fine right now defies comprehension, ask any private business owner.

EVERY president passes stimulus bills when the economy is in decline. After 911 Bush literally sent checks to every eligible tax payer, and then later in his presidency, he passed TARP. Stop hating on Obama for doing what was necessary to keep us from going into a depression. Over 40% of the stimulus that Obama passed was in the form of tax cuts. You see, when you LOWER taxes, that is called "tax spending", and Bush tax cuts have cost the U.S. more than every other peice of stimulus that both presidents passed in their time in office.
The conservatives (and some corporatist Dems) are the biggest killers to our economy, because of their worship of wealth and corporations. Corporations kill small business more efficiently than taxes, regulations, and overall economic conditions all put together. I am sure that you know this. Keynesian economics are sound. In 2008 President Obama received a truck load of money from Wall Street donors. Who also gave a lot of money to the republican candidate. That is common practice, they try to make friends on both sides so that they can try to influence policies that will benefit them Now, the vast majority of corporate dollars is going to Mitt Romney. President Obama refuses to cater to them and knows that changes need to be made. My business does well, but I don't clear over $1 million a year, and that is what it takes to be a 1%. What is frustrating to a lot of us in small business is that corporations get so many allowances from the federal government. Companies like Chevron don't even pay taxes. The actually end up getting checks from the government every year for doing business. Is that capitalism? I wish that the government would subsidize my earnings even when I reached records profits. The more "poor people" that have disposable income, the more good and services that are needed. The more goods and services that are needed, the more people companies must hire to keep up with demand. Take the food stamps program for instance. For every dollar that we give to people to help feed themselves, $1.37 worth of stimulation is brought on our economy. Welfare programs stimulate the economy, they are a negative tax, that is why it has never been touched by president other than Bill Clinton, who's economy was strong enough to handle the changes. Conservatives try to turn middle class people against the poor to try and deflect public frustration away from corporations.

Eagles, Are necessities not part of the market? Without a safety net there would be millions of people completely not contributing to the market and that would be devastating. I know it frustrates some folks to think that there is a grandmother in Chicago getting $90 a month in food stamp benefits, yet they ignore the BILLIONS of dollars that subsidize our corporations. You are right about aggregate demand, but those projections are based a large part on current demand. If you have an empty store front day after day, your futures won't look promising enough for further investment.
