As Wis. recall looms, Dems hope to avoid embarrassment

Updated 5:14 p.m. — Democrats and their allies in organized labor are heading into a final weekend of campaigning in hopes of avoiding an embarrassment in their goal of recalling Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

The Badger State has played host to months of furious campaigning since Walker, the conservative governor first elected in 2010, sought major reforms for public employee unions. He pushed through legislation to strip them of collective bargaining rights and force them to contribute to their pensions.

But the Republican governor leads Tom Barrett, the Democratic mayor of Milwaukee and Walker’s opponent in the 2010 general election, by 7 points, according to a Marquette Law Poll released Wednesday.

“Democrats really were just foolish in this way they approached this recall,” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said in a sit-down interview with NBCPolitics.com this week. “They set up this World Series event in Wisconsin, built it up. They put on the ballot a candidate who’s not worth two nickels – he’s already lost twice statewide, and is going to lose a third time now.”

The recall battle carries high stakes for not only for Walker, who has become the face of a generation of reformist conservatives, but also for Democrats and organized labor, which vowed revenge in the aftermath of the politically divisive fight to push the collective bargaining law through the state legislature.

That battle drew tens of thousands of protesters to the state Capitol in Madison, and a million people put their names to paper in support of an initial petition seeking Walker’s recall.

A supporter of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, right, talks with a supporter of Democratic opponent Tom Barrett at a recall election rally Friday, June 1, 2012, in Milwaukee.

Several state senators were recalled in 2011 as a result of the collective bargaining clamp-down, and Democrats almost succeeded in unseating a state Supreme Court justice, too.

But Walker’s been the beneficiary of a marginally improved state economy and overall fatigue associated with the recall. His chief advantage, though, comes from the millions more he, and supportive groups, have been able to spend on the campaign. Walker and those groups have spent $23 million in his race against Barrett; the governor’s fundraising was enabled by a loophole in state law allowing him to collect funds in large sums.  Barrett and labor groups have spent $12.4 million, by contrast.

"From recruiting volunteers and registering voters to organizing on campuses across the state, the DNC and OFA are working alongside the Barrett campaign and the state party to build the ground game that is crucial for success on Election Day.  And we will continue to utilize both our substantial network of activists, volunteers and supporters and extensive online resources to lay the groundwork for victory," said Melanie Roussell, a spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee.

The DNC and Organizing for America — the president's political arm — have invested almost $1.5 million in staffing, offices and support in order to help Barrett pull out a win on Tuesday.

The campaign has taken a turn toward bare-knuckled politics, though, in which Walker and Barrett have traded barbs at debates and in those paid advertisements. Barrett has sought to stoke suspicions regarding the so-called “John Doe” investigation, in which former Walker aides stand accused of allegedly misappropriating campaign funds.

The Walker campaign, in turn, has questioned Barrett’s crime record as mayor, and their overarching strategy has involved questioning the wisdom of the recall in the first place.

Eager to fight off the sense that the recall is all but lost, Democrats have been furiously contesting public polls that show Walker ahead, and releasing a flurry of internal surveys that, they say, depict a much tighter race.

The June 5 Wisconsin recall election involving the state's controversial Governor Scott Walker is set to favor Walker, a new poll shows. The Morning Joe panel discusses how the recall effort could have broader implications for the 2012 race.

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was in the state this week to help raise money for Barrett, and on Friday, former President Bill Clinton will stump against Walker in Wisconsin. For his part, Walker brought his own heavyweight to the fight: South Carolina Gov. Nikki campaigned with him Friday in Sussex.

But the Obama administration has been somewhat removed from the campaign; the president has no plans to campaign in the state for Barrett, and the White House was forced on Wednesday to clarify whether Obama had even endorsed the Democratic nominee (he has).

The saving grace for Democrats might lie in a labor-driven turnout effort. But Republicans have been equally enthusiastic about retaining Walker, whom they treat as a vanguard for efforts to rein in public employee unions and entitlement spending.

But Republicans contend that, between the 2010 elections and two intervening recalls before this one, they have built a voter outreach machine on par with few others – one which could pay dividends in an election like Tuesday’s, which may hinge on each side’s ability to drive supporters to the polls.

I don't like the title of this article at all. Is MSNBC going right wing? The people of Wisconsin should be proud to have gotten this far against a tyrannical governor supported by the ever self centered Koch brothers. Big money has way too much influence. The wealthy moneyed special interests will only be happy when we all become pan handlers too poor to buy the jazz that they are selling.

"Dems hope to avoid embarrassment"

That is not even possible at this point.

What part of spending 2 years overrunning public offices, busing in whiners from other states, and yelling and screaming about unions not receiving enough taxpayer money is not embarassing?

To be a Democrat in 2012 is to be an embarassment to America.

Let's see, you all got a bug up your collective butts - spurned by union workers whose salaries and benefits far surpass the average taxpayer - to do this. All that big talk about the 'sleeping giant' and some such crap on a stick.

Bottom line Walker has got the the job done. More jobs, less costs.

In other words my super great libbie friends - there is a reason Walker is up in every single poll. THere is a reason he will win by 7.

THat you all don't get it is fantastic and will ensure that this place stays as fun as ever.

I'm not sure that "embarrassment" is the operative word that should be used here.

This recall has national attention. If Walker isn't recalled; it could be viewed as a setback; no doubt. The republicans will try to get as much mileage as possible out of this if Walker isn't recalled; that's for sure. I have little doubt that they will try to use this as a statement to people across the country that this is the type of governing people want. What everybody needs to ask themselves is if this is the type of governing body you want running this country.

I for one do not. How about you?

Well, knowing Dems as I do, they won't necessarily be embarassed, but it sure as hell looks like they're going to be defeated. And why not? Walker has turned the state around economically, without firing anybody. I guess Dems are more interested in promoting a failed agenda then achieving financial stability.

Walker ran on a promise to create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and as of now Wisconsin is running 50th among the states in job growth. Walker's campaign has more favorable numbers that show Wisconsin isn't 50th but is dead last in Midwestern states, but he won't release info on where his numbers come from until after the recall election.

The Democratic candidate may have union backing, but why isn't it reported that Walker has union-busting corporate money, most from out-of-state, supporting him?

Not only do dems in WI want to be on the wrong side of where America is, they want to be on record for being on the wrong side, minus how many millions of dollars trying to prove this point. A majority voted him in the first time, a minority gets mad and thinks their cause is more important than the majority wishes, the minority throws a fit, and again, on Tuesday the majority will win out, and no doubt the minority will claim "voter fraud", and "too many ignorant voters were allowed to go out of the house and vote". I find all this actually very amusing and quite telling of what has become of the democrat and union parties and where their future is.

But it's ok WI libs, when you lose, you'll still be able to go out, work hard, and support your family even though your grand plans to bilk the WI citizens failed. Have a nice day. See you first thing Wednesday morning. We'll console you and have lemonade and cookies to help ease the pain.

Walker is on tape saying his strategy (the GOP/Governor/Congressional/NORQUIST strategy):

Is "Divide and Rule",

With the goal of pitting public and private sector union workers and ordinary folks against each other.

This man did not run on union bashing, slashing Education, moving monies from seniors and the vulnerable to tax cuts for the wealthy, selling off public lands, and shifting housing aid to budget cuts. Next stop, emergency Managers?

Several state senators were recalled in 2011 as a result of the collective bargaining clamp-down, and Democrats almost succeeded in unseating a state Supreme Court justice, too.

Since when is 2 several?? One lost in a democrat district, the other in a 50/50 district and he had some issues or he would have survived as well. As for the Supreme Court race the democrats almost won, well I almost won 250 million dollars had I just picked 4 more number right. Too bad, so sad.

The bottom line is the democrats instigated the uproar in WI. when the democrat minority fled the state instead of debating the issues like real men and women. Then they bused in all the dregs and social misfits they could scrounge up to feign outrage. A bigger display of sore losers has never been assembled. Since then an endless campaign of innuendo and outright lies has managed to fool the uninformed and keep the race closer than it should be. However by late Tuesday June 5th, it will be official, Scott Walker will prevail as governor of WI., and it will mark the beginning of the end for liberalism in the US as 1 state after the other wise up and follow Wisconsin's lead. SWEEEEEEEET!

All a failure to recall Walker will prove is that our government really is for sale to the highest bidder. If Wisconsin chooses to sell their government to corporations and millionaires, they will see the results as their middle class struggles while the rich get richer. I had hoped that Wisconsin voters had the fortitude to resist the well financed manipulation of their votes, but perhaps not.

Reince Priebus, what a twit and even worse than Michael Steele. The Teapublican machinations in Wisconisn are only part of the larger "strategery" across the nation that began with the "Southern Strategy."

The umbrella of it all is to win -- not on merit, or making one's case for a platform, or based on one's record, etc. -- but rather try to destroy the Democratic Party with underhanded debauchery. In the case of Wisconsin, it has been divide and conquer to bust unions (first carving out police and firefighters to pit them against teachers, etc., and then after destroying the public sector, to go after the private sector). It isn't just about wanting a right-to-work state, states that don't in fact have better economies, but rather dismantling any support/funding that the Democratic Party depends on -- especially now in the face of Citizen's United.

The other article today about Rick "Voldermort" Scott in Florida and his blatant attempt to repeat the purge close to the election date -- as conducted by Kathrine Harris that helped to steal the 2000 election from Gore -- is another tactic that falls under the umbrella of machinations for victory. The 48-hour requirement for turning in registrations forms or face criminal charges was even worse. The list goes on and on from gerrymandering, to trying to tamper with the electoral vote, and so forth.

The sad, really pitiful thing of it all is the manifestation that the GOP/TP can't win any other way. And in the process of their "ends justify the means" they are willing to throw the American people under the bus economically, and worst of all jeopardize our constitutional democracy. This borders on treason. The Teapublicans must be thrown out.

Republicans plan is to divide and conquer. They have done a good job. Even though the republicans policies are the same policies that have created a doubled dipped recession in England, there are republicans voters willing to vote for another recession brought to us on purpose by bringing back bush policies.

Aren't we still recovering from the same policies the republicans are planning to go back to?

How is our democracy to survive when we have the republicans making it harder to vote and even register to vote? In Florida they passed laws to make it a crime to register to vote if you took longer than 48 hours to turn in the paperwork. This law was making a teacher pay big fines and maybe even prison time for registering her civics class students to vote until a judge declared the 48 hour limit unconstitutional.

Then in Florida the republican governor is purging the voter roles of democrats and independents. Isn't that the kind of thing they do in a country run by a dictator?

So 75% of our country thinks we should tax the rich more and yet many will vote for republicans who plan on never raising taxes on the rich again no matter who suffers and no matter what happens to our country.

Republicans have so bought into the republican lies that they are willing to vote against their own freedom and democracy. Then they want to pretend they are the smart ones by voting for the 1% over America.

VOTE FOR FREEDOM...VOTE FOR A DEMOCRAT 2012

The recall election of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker
(R) and other lawmakers slated for June 5 is about many issues, including
attacks on workers' basic freedom to bargain collectively for better lives. But
fundamentally it's about a new style of politics, which shuns the American
tradition of consensus, writes E.J. Dionne in a Washington Post column today.

Walker is being challenged not because he pursued conservative policies but
because Wisconsin has become the most glaring example of a new and genuinely
alarming approach to politics on the right. It seeks to use incumbency to alter
the rules and tilt the legal and electoral playing field decisively toward the
interests of those in power.

The most obvious way of gaming the
system is to keep your opponents from voting in the next election. Rigging the
electorate is a surefire way of holding on to office. That is exactly what has
happened in state after state—Wisconsin is one of them—where
GOP legislatures passed new laws on voter identification and registration. They
are plainly aimed at making it much more difficult for poorer, younger and
minority voters to get or stay on the voter rolls and to cast ballots when
Election Day comes.

MPat -

The CES reported a 5,900 loss in jobs, but the broader measure shows Wisconsin (CPS) gaining 6700 jobs.

CES surveys 3.5% of employers to get statistics, the CPS surveys households to find out who is working.

Being CPS is a larger sample and captures all the people that employers hires as consultants, I'd say Wisconsin's is improving because Employers right now are hiring consultants (I'm doing this right now) and if work keeps coming officially adds them to the staff.

The best thing that could possibly happen for Scott Walker right now is to be recalled and lose the recall election. He and a number of his staff are about to be indicted on criminal charges soon after the election. How embarrassing would that be for republicans/Wisconsin to have Walker win his recall election only to go to jail six months after? His term so far has been ripe with corruption and shady financial transactions and this will all come to fruition in the next few weeks. This whole thing is about to blow wide open.

So far a total of 35 MILLION dollars has been spent on this, and that's not including the costs to the taxpayers for the re-election as well. Walker is bad, Barrett is worse and it'd be nice to actually have someone here who wasn't on the payroll for a lobbying group! The interesting thing is that when this first came about it was over a huge uproar regarding the limits being placed on public unions. According to the ads that are running by the dems, that's not the issue - now it's about jobs. (Nevermind that I had a friend in Indiana railing because HIS union put out propaganda that Walker was trying to limit collective bargaining for ALL unions, not just public which amounts to about 7% of WI workers!) I don't care for either, but if the dems lose I think they should have to reimburse the state the cost of the re-election. Actually if Walker loses, his side should have to do the same. None of us here asked for this type of scenario 2 years ago during the original elections.

I told ya'll Scott Walker was a cross -eyed iar.

FEDS DID NOT CONFIRM WALKER'S JOB NUMBERS – BLS

CLARIFICATION

Yesterday, Scott Walker and the Department of Workforce Development attempted to pull the wool over the eyes of Wisconsinites with their claim that the Bureau of Labor Statistics confirmed his fictitious claim of creating jobs in Wisconsin. The AP Reported.

Politiscoop contacted the BLS today for verification of the claim. It turns out to be one of Walker's biggest lies to date. In a conversation with a BLS representative, we found that the state of Wisconsin submitted a new formula in regard to jobs created or lost in the state. The example we were given was as follows:

Originally the state would have had a formula such as 1+3+10=14; Wisconsin changed the math to be 4+10=14. As you can see, both come to the same result, just one less step in doing so and wouldn't generate 30,000 extra jobs. The BLS also pointed out the fact that each year the benchmarks for the state are adjusted to account for any changes to prevent statistical errors.

The BLS also made it clear that if there was such an egregious error in Wisconsin, that error would also apply to the rest of the United States. In other words, Wisconsin would still be dead last in job creation. We contacted the Scott Walker campaign and were given a “no comment". We also reached out to communications director, Ciara Mathews, and asked for proof of Scott Walker’s claim. We have yet to receive a reply.

Jody epitomizes all that is wrong with liberal thinking.

They "tried"? To do what, exactly- overturn the results of an election, that's what. They simply could not accept that their worn out, proven failure, ideas were rejected by the majority.

Want proof? Go look for any quote by Barrett about the change in collective bargaining rules passed by republicans. You can search all you like- you won't find any. Why? Because the citizens of Wisconsin are already seeing the results- in the form of deficits turned into surpluses, cuts in property taxes, -oh, and about the same number of public employees.

Whaddaya know!

By the way, Jody- there is no "old saying" about trying and failing being fine. The actual quote is "tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all".

Guess its not in any of Obama's speeches.

Walker ran on promises to reign in public labor union excesses, and that's what he did.

This whole recall is nothing but the unions resenting a politician for doing what he said he would do, and it appears that the good people of Wisconsin will reiterate their original vote for a politician that actually does what he says he will do.

It also appears that all of the 'predictions' of a catastrophe if Walker's bills passed didn't happen, and economic prospects have actually gotten better for Wisconsin, while many public sector jobs were actually 'saved' by the actions of Walker.

Despite the Democrats changing their story from "This recall will have national implications", to "This is strictly a local election with no national implications", it will indeed reverberate across the nation.

You ask how much the Republicans have spent that could have hired folks. Aren't you missing the obvious. They would have spent zero if the Democrats had not pursued this ridiculous recall effort. The Dems fully shoulder the blame for the money that has been wasted on both sides.

But then, my view parellels Bill Clintons. Recalls are simply circuses for the most part. They rarely can be completed much before the regular election would be held anyway. And in the interim, not much governing can take place because the focus must be on campaigning. Bad for the citizens of the State of Wisconsin.

Angry voters mad at Walker and wanting him out of office or voters who either support the present Governor or don't care? If they can't get enough angry voters to overcome the apathetic ones or the one's fine with the current situation then they had no business pushing the recall election in the first place.

The embarrassing part is that in a democracy that is supposed to model for the world how wonderful we are, only about 40% of us even vote, if that. Now THAT'S embarrassing!

Hahaha, just noticed the signs in the photo above with "union thugs" -- this is so out of date. Looks like Romney who is stuck in a time warp of the Cold War, who wants to take our country back to the Gilded Age and robber barons, along with pre-civil rights and Flat Earth Society positions fits the Teapublicans quite well.

Gneisenau -- If even one more Republican is recalled in this process it will be very worth the effort, because if Walker manages to stay in officce, for the remainder of his term he will have no power.

#2.41 - Sat Jun 2, 2012 3:10 PM EDT

Edward F. Dijeau -- Excellent points. One backlash to Walker's Wisconsin strategy tragedy is Montana's fight for state's rights to over-rule Citizen's United money. There was another article about Justice Stevens this week discussing cracks in this ruling. The state's rights is yet another crack in which the SCOTUS seems to be upholding Montana's rights. Currently there are another 22 states in agreement with Montana awaiting the outcome.

All the GOP/TP conniving from union-busting to purging rolls to Emergency Manager dictatorship to Citizen's United is no longer flying under the radar. Stand with Montana. Don't reward betrayal. Throw the Teapublicans out.

And then we need to rebuild unions in the private sector. Worker's rights must be strengthened, or our nation will continue to tank. When the middle class and working poor do well, everyone does well including businesses and the rich. Stand for labor, stand for yourself.

  • 8 votes
#2.42 - Sat Jun 2, 2012 3:22 PM EDT

bahrrt -- Exactly. The GOP/TP have tried to use the economic crisis as cover to pursue their long-time agenda. They have wanted to end all New Deal progress (e.g., Social Security), ending organized labor, and most of all to privatize profits and socialize debt for oligarchy rule.

One has to wonder if Teapublicans caused the economic meltdown on purpose--if not mere neglect like 9-11 that allowed the rise of neocon war profiteering. It's suspicious, especially when they push for the same tax cuts for the rich, deregulation of Wall Street, warmongering, etc. that caused the economic mess in the first place. No doubt they rationalize this as a temporary inconvenience to the American people worth their power grab, not just for the moment, but forever.

If you think this agenda and ultimate goal is anything other than anti-democracy and un-American, think again. Teapublicans don't even want a two-party system, in other words they want an autocracy. Some want everything privatized and run by monopolies -- they don't want a government at all (anarchy). The propaganda about the constitution and all their other BS is a complete diabolical farce.

    R_M_B,

You do realize the data you link is for the first half of 2011. I suspect you also realize that Walker only took office in 2011. The numbers in that data can hardly be attributed to Walker who took a few months to institute his job killing policies. You might also note that if you check on the jobs created during that period, most were associated with the Stimulus. (Check Recovery.Gov.)

But even with that positive start, Walkers numbers today, up to date, show Wisconsin as dead last. I'm sure you are just trying to spin some data hoping no one will look and analyze it, or maybe you are just a sucker who buys someone else's spin, but the facts are the facts.

Bottom line is that you have to discount results that occur the first few months any executive office person takes power. Just like Roy Wilson tries to credit the continued drastic job losses that occurred during Obama's first few months to Obama. We all know that the day someone walks into office they can't immediately change any existing trends. Best case scenario says you need to credit at least the first quarter results of this nature, to the previous office holder.

So the question is whether you are just trying to spin things to support what you believe or whether you got fooled by someone else's spin. Did you find this data yourself, or did someone else point you to it while making a political point? Realize that millions of dollars are being spent to spin things and distort data. Don't just accept something without doing an analysis. So tell me, do you truly believe that the results in the first half of 2011 are really indicative of Walker's policies? If so, I've got a really nice used car you might be interested in. It provided me with years of trouble free service, (2005 and 2006)

The Wisconsin Recall Election is a "sign" of what to come for America!

Bye, Bye to the Food Stamp President Obama and all those that think they are "entitled" to a standard of living!

I was hoping we could stop the GOP in WI, but it isn't looking good. The rest of the states will start falling one after the other, and the social bills will begin to change our civil rights quickly. The GOP are not passing jobs bills, or bills for the economy. But abortion, against Planned Parenthood, WIC, ultrasounds for abortions, no contraception assistance at all, Its just a matter of time. We go back to the 50s, if they can't hold them in WI.

The problem the Dems have is the fact that Repub $ and Repub super pacs are flooding Wisconsin with cash and ad space but there is very little help from the national Democratic party.

All right. Help me with this. What is embarrassing for Dems or Wisconsin by trying to recall their Governor, even if they lose? They knew going in that it was likely to fail, only three recalls have succeeded. Does that mean you don't try, because heaven forbid you might lose? Or do you do the morally correct thing and try to remove an autocrat?

The people of Wisconsin have put the fear of God into little Scotty. He may wind up in enough legal jeopardy that he has to resign anyway.

Good on you Wisconsin! You did the brave and correct thing!

Patriotic & Feisty, After 2 years and counting the DA has not landed so much as a finger on Walker, not 1 charge, Nothing. Do you know why that is, there is nothing to find, period. In case you think the DA is in bed with Scott, think again, he's got a recall Walker sign in his yard, one of the very few I might add.

I'm particularly interested in your train of thought Feisty. Frankly I'm more than a little concerned about your home state. It has been under democrat domination since....., well since nearly forever, yet your states financial situation is horrific and getting worse. Just how do you square that? How is not obveous to you what an abject failure liberal policies are? I've read every hyperbolic dire predictions of what will happen in WI with the Walker reforms, none come to pass because none are based on fact but only to scare the uninformed. I'm not in tune to the election cycle in IL so I don't know when your governor and the bulk of your legislators are up for re-election, but they should be afraid, very afraid after what they've done to solve your problems, which continue to spiralcascade down. Good luck Feisty, I wouldn't wish on anyone, even you, whats going to happen in IL.

Republicans who want to kill democracy were concerned the recall might happen. Otherwise they would not be pouring 24 to 1 in money to defend Walker.

This is about the rich getting richer while they bankrupt our country so the rich can buy it for nothing. A vote for a republican is a vote for the 1% taking over America.

Then the republicans whine about all the people on food stamp after their bad policies caused a recession after their even worst policies of wars and tax cuts created the largest deficit in our countries history. Of course in a republicans eyes it was all done all alone by President Obama.

After the republicans destroy our economy their biggest complain now is that President Obama is not fixing their mess fast enough while they obstruct everything that could create jobs and a better economy.

So the republicans broke our economy, they have obstructed the recovery, and why would anyone with half a brain vote for them for anything?

You say there's nothing there. Explain this:

BREAKING: MAJOR REVELATIONS IN JOHN DOE PROBE - SCOTT WALKER INADVERTENTLY ADMITS HE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION

Wisconsin law is very clear: an elected official can only establish a legal defense fund if they, or their agent, are under investigation for, charged with, or convicted of violations of Wisconsin’s campaign finance and election laws.

Geez, talk about whiners. The election hasn't even happened and the libs are explaining why they lost. Unions are a thing of the past and simply have outlasted their usefulness. They have contributed to bloated benefits and inflated salaries and job protection for people who would normally be fired. They serve nothing more than to make the union heads rich and feed take the workers dues and fund Democratic candidates. They have driven thousands of job oversees and wrecked manufacturing in this country. They resort to thug tactics to force businesses to adopt their radical views and squash employers who already pay a decent wage and benefits and simply don't want to be burdened by union foolishness. I hope Walker sticks it to all of them and sends the message that enough is enough.

The Democrat Senators left The State to stop a quorum on Scott Walkers Anti-Union budget legislation. You do notice that 4 more Republican Senators are also on the recall and this time it's the Freshmen Tea Party rubber Stamps for Walker on the chopping Block. Not a single Patriot Democrat, who went out of the State, is being Recalled. Seems like the People in their districts feel they are Heroes.

Union membership is up according to the AFL-CIO thanks to people finally realizing that to get better pay and benefits, it pays to join a Union

It seems the recall election of Wisconsin Gov.

Read Dionne's full column here http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/wisconsins-recall-election-on-scott-walker-a-bid-for-regular-order/2012/05/30/gJQA4JCi2U_story.html?wpisrc=nl_opinions_Thu

96ws6, Normally I'd agree with you 100%. In this case I couldn't disagree more. Walker is honest, does what he says he'll do, and best of all, what he did works. There are a handful of good political leaders out there, most I wouldn't give the time of day to if they asked me, but there are a few. It is imperative to get to know who they are. If by chance Scott Walker loses, it will be the biggest political travesty of all time bar none. At that case, I would give up on there being any future for WI or the US.

Walker is so honest he said that his plans were to divide and conquer to kill unions. Lets kill more living wage jobs here in America and more and more would be too poor to pay taxes.

We should all be proud that the rich have decided that America is for them and the he!! with the rest of us in this country.

Starve the poor for more tax cuts for the rich. Yep sounds just like how a dictator would run a country, all for him and nothing for the people.

Voting for a republican is voting to destroy America as we know it for the 1%.

Voting for a republican is voting to declare you as a woman are too stupid to be able to choose for your own body.

Voting for a republican is voting to give up your rights to contraception.

Voting for a republican is declaring that you think women don't have the right to earn the same amount of money for the same job as a man does.

Voting for a republican is declaring that it is just fine for Wall Street to rob us again after Romney gets rids of all those pesky regulations that kept the lost to only 3 billion this time.

Voting for a republican is declaring that humans don't need clean air to breathe and clean water to drink. Those are more pesky regulations they want to get rid of, you know the EPA.

Voting for a republican means you are ready to go back to the bush policies that brought our country to her knees in the first place.

Voting for a republican means you also want to kill social security and medicare so the rich can have more tax cuts.

Voting for a republican means tax cuts are also more important than education.

Voting for a republican means tax cuts for the rich are the most important thing you can do. After all this election is costing them a lot of money and they plan on getting it back when they are running our country.

Voting for a republican means you don't think we should be a democracy with all being able to register and vote with ease.

Voting for a republican means a loss of our freedom and rights as humans.

This is a big election. Do the republicans as the 1% control America or do democrats as the 99% control America? The republicans have more money and how stupid do you have to be to buy their lies and vote against your own country for the 1%?

Amercans First, the problem I have with your post is that it is entirly false and just a list of talking points given to you by the left. Voting Republican is voting to change America as we know it? did you forget Obama ran on "change". America doesn't want that change.

And really? You think Republicans want dirty air and water? Seriously?

Tax cuts are more important than education to Republicans? The money spent on education does not correlate to quality of education.

I can't even go on. You are obviously very young. I don't mean that as a slam just a justification for your hate towards Republicans. We want what is best for America the same as you. We just realize it can't happen with Liberal politicians. You proably think Jimmy Carter was a good president if you even know who he is. I would be willing to bet that the only presidents you have been alive under are Bush and now Obama.

I don't live in WI, and I'm not taking sides on this one, BUT, but, if the Dems really wanted Walker out of office, why didn't they send POTUS there himself a few times to back up Barrett? Just saying. They have big spenders, I'm sure. Where is the money to equal the Koch brothers tugging the other way?

That's all I have to say.

I received this text message from a friend in Wisconsin (I added the bold type for emphasis):

"This is a TV-watching, sound-bite nation full of short attention spans.

Only the biggest sums of money spent on the most amount of campaign ads, rules the majority of the minds of the voters and the votes in this country. The right-wing propaganda unceasingly broadcasted on TV, internet and radio, will assure that you will continue to vote against your interests, and you'll do your part to patriotically erode away your institutions of democracy, and willingly chip away at your civil rights, so that neo-fascist, theocratic, unregulated oligopolies run by a few elite wealthy men, will end up ruling this country, care of "state rights," secessionist anarchy, and in the name of your Christian Fundamentalist God.

If you want to be happy living in a third world country, a once-mighty progressive world power that voted to regress itself back to the 18th century ...be my guest! And don't let the door hit you on the way out into your own political madness!"

                  ------------------------------

"Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke. They stand four-square for the American home--but not for housing. They are strong for labor--but they are stronger for restricting labor's rights. They favor minimum wage--the smaller the minimum wage the better. They endorse educational opportunity for all--but they won't spend money for teachers or for schools. They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine--for people who can afford them. They consider electrical power a great blessing--but only when the private power companies get their rake-off. They think American standard of living is a fine thing--so long as it doesn't spread to all the people. And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it."

                  -- Harry S. Truman

"A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs, who, however, has never learned to walk.... A liberal is a man who uses his legs and his hands at the behest of his head."

Why do people associate a Republican being a conservative. All the newspapers follow the leader and are idiots. They don't even know how to spell anymore.

Lets go back to 20001, when the Republicans telling us they are shifting jobs to China. Now they are blaming the President for not creating any jobs. Hypocrisy by Bonner and his Republican cronies! By the way, I'm not a Democrat, just a Wisconsinite that wants these Walker criminals to leave our state and bring in back to once was, people working for each other! Failed Governor Scott Walker needs to go in Wisconsin and if he doesn't it will be because money has purchased a statehouse. This should alarm all good Democrats, Republicans and Independents. The candidate and their ideas should win elections not huge piles of cash. If Walker retains his seat it means that the era of democratic elections is waning and will be replaced by special interest purchases. I think candidates should be forced to wear Nascar type suits with all their "sponsors" listed on their suits.

The recall has pumped millions in out of state money into the Wisconsin economy-more than Failed Governor Scott Walker could do with his tax cuts for corporations. I guess the corporations are just protecting their original investment and banking on future R. O. I.

                  Walker is Woe unto Wisconsin.

Money is not speech either. But it sure buys a lot of negative ads that play over and over again and sadly this does effect votes. Amen to limiting Obama and his fundraising but that is only because of the RWNJ on the SCOTUS and Citizens United. Move to Amend!! Money is NOT speech and corporations are NOT people.

It is very simple, ad the word 'natural" to the 14th Amendment and make ALL campaigns publicly financed

Anybody who thinks it is "good" that Walker or anyone else gets millions in outside financing is either a corporate shill or owns stock in the news media and advertising which are the real beneficiaries of Cit. United

Unions by their very nature reflect the concerns of every member. A closed corporation can have as few members as one making decisions that affect all of us. I stand with the unions on every level. Whether it is a union that fights for the rights of it's members at the work place, or whether it is the union of the poor majority standing firm against the tyranny of the those in the one percent who want to be 21rst century robber barons. To be fair not all of the one percent want wealth and power by ay means necessary.

The state having to spend over 9 million on Walker's recall alone doesn't exactly fit that narrative either. This is a net negative for the Wisconsin taxpayer. This is what we have elections for. This was purely political and purely revenge by the unions. It is going to fail and prove to have been an enormous waste of time and taxpayer expense.

Read Dionne's full column here http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/wisconsins-recall-election-on-scott-walker-a-bid-for-regular-order/2012/05/30/gJQA4JCi2U_story.html?wpisrc=nl_opinions_Thu

the total spent in this recall election is nearly 60 milliion...Walker has spent less then half that amount, while over 21 million has come from outside (read union) sources in support of the democrat. Here's the problem...unions can not directly use dues in support of a candidate...they must borrow the money, which is then repaid from union coffers which is the union dues of those who support and those who oppose. Those who oppose the union efforts to recall Walker have no choice in the matter. That is one of the reasons why the second largest union in Wisconsin has lost nearly half of their membership since given the option to join or not join.

Unions like Government Departments are full of waste and abuse and both need to be examined and streamlined. The attack on teachers and public sector workers was low and base and Walker took true public sector champions and smeared them as over paid and cadillac benefit rich.

Let's look for their Cayman Island and Swiss tax dodging accounts. How many car elevators exist in teacher's garages in Wisconsin?

Teachers are the good guys and Walker is Snidley Whiplash. It is that simple.

Would not trust poll from Marquette since that is Walker's alma mater. If all the Democrats are showing up to the state it is because they smell a win. I think Barrett performed well last night. That will get him the momentum. However I believe the Republicans will fix this election at the last minute. Yes I suspect they have boxes of absentee ballots for Walker stashed somewhere. Scott Walker does hire felons. He has proven that much. They won't hesitate to use any means possible to win. They, Republicans, emphasize voter fraud because they engage in it constantly.

Do you know something no one else does? Really? By 7? As if it has been set up already and no one needs to show up to vote. Wow! Wisconsin has become Quatemala. Even Quatemala is not that backa@#wards any longer. Scott Walker is a felon isn't he? Thanks for the heads up!

Ana, Marquette Law School polling says 7 points. That's what this and the other news outlets (the ones that aren't PACs) are reporting. Love your selective polling data. Where exactly did yours come from?

Either way, Tuesday means Walker will still be governor, and not much will change.... except of course the unending chorus of b1tching from people who can't handle that in fact the majority did not agree with them.

I'm sure we'll hear complaining about ... oh they bought the election... (or maybe they got more money because they had more support?) ...

And there will always be allegations of voter fraud...

We'll hear about how Barrett didn't have enough time to prepare and how the Republicans lied (except the 25:1 spending BS and the "Wisconsin is dead last in job creation" BS is coming from the Dems)...

Maybe for once Democrats could impress the rest of us, and actually lose an election gracefully. Maybe it would make your party more appealing to the educated voters in the middle.

A ball of fire coming out of the blocks to get the recall signatures required for the recall and a big bag of wind campaign and loser candidate who will go down to defeat on Tuesday. What was labor thinking? Like the dog chasing the car and finally caught it; now what do I do with the car???? Answer - you get run over! GO SCOTT!!!

Failed Governor Scott Walker will sell his office to the highest corporate bidders if he keeps it. The fake call from the Koch brothers showed that fact. It also showed how dense Walker was and how his ego works. He thought he was a star that billionaires wanted to consult and hang out with. He is just the Wisconsin agent of 1% control.

                        Walker is Woe unto Wisconsin.

Whether SW is recalled or not, at least these things are true:

                        1. Scott Walker was distracted and forced to spend $.

                        2. Democrats are better organized in Wisconsin than before the recall attempt.

                        3. Wisconsin (and other states) has been reminded the importance of considering a candidate's philosophy and record higher than what they say during a campaign.

                        4. The pernicious influence of out-of-state money has been highlighted.

All these bode well for democrat future.

IAN- 1) National Democrat party and big labor put tons of money in this recall effort. I live in the deep south and sent Scott money. Scott has and will continue to have all the money he needs. 2) You think the Democrats are better organized?? Looks like a dependable "blue" state gonna be a "red" state on Tuesday and this coming November; love that organization. 3) Record - I think that Scott's opponent is a 3 time loser already; some record. 4) People in other states see Wisconsin as the tip of the ice berg to finally put a nail through big labor's heart.......thus the reason for all the out of state money.

Yeah, I'd say if you live in "LA-LA" land it certainly does bode well for Democrats.....Good Luck!

"Madison - A statewide recall election against Gov. Scott Walker could cost $9 million or more, election officials estimate."

"The $9 million figure is for one statewide election only and could rise higher if there is a primary needed to pick a Democrat to run against Walker or if any possible additional Senate recalls are held on different dates."

They did have to hold a Primary...those costs haven't been added in...

This Temper-Tantrum cost the taxpayers of Wisconsin some $$ 10 MILLION dollars....Money that could have been spent on programs for hungry children....Why do Union Members hurt hungry children ??

The rich have declared a war on democracy and that is just fine. You don't think the people have a right to fight back.

In Wisconsin this is a test are the millions of dollars the republicans are spending on lying going to work? Are our people so stupid they will vote against the people for the 1%?

The republicans inherited a surplus and in 8 years managed to get us in 2 wars, the largest deficit in our history, Wall street and their greed robbed America big time with deregulation and a recession bleeding millions of jobs. This was republican success and they have the nerve to complain about democrats.

You couldn't have much of a brain to want to bring all that back by voting for a republican for anything.

typical union hack. How democratic is a union? They represent 50% democrats of their members (political party) and give 100% of Political war funds to democrats. They buy off the Politicians to whome they in turn, negotiate with. How moral is that? Union Bosses are in the 1%.

Funny how republicans decry Obama as being divisive and starting a class warfare. Since when is it considered to be such a bad thing to have a good paying union job with good benefits. Conservatives think this is evil personified. Why don't people who work for a living not embrace those who have an opportunity to earn a great wage and better benefits. Conservative working people are told these unionized people should be cursed and lose these advantages instead of inspiring them to obtain the same for themselves, merely because they are better off than them. I guess they're all to busy aspiring to become wealthy instead of being just well off with a living wage. They keep hearing what a great country we live in from the millionaire talking heads on Fox News, and what great opportunities there are out there. They just don't understand that the rich are gaming the whole system and are reducing those opportunities to those outside their class more and more every year. Welcome to the new serfdom. Walker and the "Right to Work" (get hosed) mentality go hand in hand. Seal your own fate people. I'm retired, and don't worry so much anymore until they take away my medicare and social security. And that's next on the agenda. Republicans won't be happy until they bring back the poor houses for us seniors they're all hell bent on decimating.

When they finally wake up with lower wages, less benefits and the realization that they were played Failed Governor Scott Walker will be gone and their hopes with him. If Walker keeps his seat he will then land in court and embarrass Wisconsin voters even more. Loser with a capital L.

Let's recap, using reality as a basis-

Democrats failed to overturn the majority in the Senate recalls.

Unions failed to get their preferred candidate nominated.

Changing the rules for collective bargaining for public worker unions is not even mentioned during this campaign- seems the voting public is happy with the results of the changes.

Embarrassed? When people talk about the costs of this exercise in futility, democrats should follow the path they took during the legislative sessions that actually led to these recalls- and hotfoot it back to Illinois. Or California, if they prefer the weather there. Those are the only two states where they will be welcome.

For all those that back the Dems and the unions the real story here should be the uncovering of the scam that the WEA Trust Health Insurance was. For those who do not know in Wisconsin the Teachers Union had their own Health insurance company which thanks to Collective Barganing perks was forced down the throats of all the communities. Since Act 10 went into effect and districts were allowed to shop for health insurance districts have seen savings of over $500k for the exact same plan from other companies. WEA Trust and the teachers unions were gouging us tax payers in Wisconsin with over inflated pricing. I know in my own district WEA threatened to drop our school if we even tried to shop out the insurance but was amazingly able to give us a substantial savings for the exact same plan. THEY ARE NOTHING BUT CROOKS! and this is gettin almost no play in the media around here. We are talking potentially of Millions if not Billions of dollars in the last couple decades since WEA Trust was created. Remember back in the 80's when the government discovered we were paying $500 for toilet seets and $2000 for hammers by over charging crooked companies..there is no difference and there should be charges or very least an investigation of their practices.

The only way this was uncovered was because of the Walker reforms. Thank goodness for Gov. Walker and I cannot wait to cast another ballot for him this coming Tuesday, June 5th.

Remember how all of this started? The Dems fled across the state line and took up residence in hotels to avoid bringing the anti union bill to a vote.

At the time the recall was going to be a "Great Democratic Victory."

Scott Walker tyrannical? Does anybody really think public sector unions would accept paying a part of their own pensions like the rest of us if they had collective bargaining rights? They have no business being unionized to begin with.

Scott Walker received a lot of support because he's doing the right thing. And no amount of money will save Obama from from being sith-canned.

The teachers' union had already agreed to pay part of their pensions and health insurance before Scott Walker pushed to eliminate their collective bargaining rights. He had promised the Koch Brothers to bust the union, and the Koch brothers want their money's worth.

Hate to break the news to you, bub, but there were organized unions long before there was a Scott Walker. He didn't come up with the grand Republicon idealism that somehow unions and government are not needed all by himself.

This is a rights issue. Its hypocritical for Republicons to take away rights, and in the same breath, say government has to be smaller.

Obama. He is trying to protect his job and, after all, that is the only important thing. The unions could get something if they organize U-Haul before January when Obama will be renting a big trailer to pack his crap.

Heynow, make no mistake--that Unions have NEVER been for saving JOBS, only union jobs. And they have never been for the rights of workers, ONLY for union workers.

My small town in Central MO has been ruined by labor unions, with the result being that many of the employers in the area have closed up and moved elsewhere.

The majority of this state does not want public unions and implement the right to work rules. If Barret got elected this would not change. I would make a serious bet that the majority of people here in Wisconsin don't want Walker to return.

The problem folks, is you go in and say "no more public unions"! I'm OK with that. The problem is, you don't replace the wage system with anything else. You don't tell your employees, this is the new system we are moving towards this system. Here is the structure, if you excell you get rewarded like the public sector is.

The Repbulicans control both houses and failed to present a system to replace the union way systems! Unions have overstepped the boundries of acceptance in this state. But state officals failed to protect their workers! They should be fired and recalled. That is why as a Repuplican I will vote for Barret and will go on a recall my local representive.

I though governmet was "for by the people and for the people"? The Replubilcans have changed this to a corrupt society of me and I want to be the 1%. To me, if one is succeful in business and in life, the rewards will come me and they have. Now it about Republican greed and who can screw over who!

Keep looking over your shoulder because here I come to take away your money! I don't and wont live that way. Stay out of my state you greedy FIB's.

Jeff you need to either have your spell-check fixed, or at least read your post before you press the button. You mis-spelled "Republican" three times; do you really expect to be taken seriously? No one is going to do away with public unions, they perform important services; but you have to face reality. The money is running out; the chickens are coming home to roost. Union members have to realize that eventually their benefits have to be paid for by somebody. It sounds cute to blame the 1% for everything, but if we don't start bending the curve of spending soon, we'll end up like Greece or Spain. That's the reality; do you think employees could come up with a couple of dollars for health insurance that they used to get for free? For free? And from what I understand, Governor Walker was able to balance the budget without laying off any workers. Isn't it better to do a little bit now, so as to avoid catastrophe down the road? I mean really.

And Jeff, seriously, my friend, read your posts before you send them along.

Unlike the privite sector. If you have a bad employee you can not just fire them. Like teacher unions (tenure) once in, stay in. No privite sector jobs have that protection, except for the owner owned business, and they can go out of business. The State Unions are there to pad the Democratic election payrolls. Plan and simple. Both conspire against the taxpayer since they have to pay the bills. Well us taxpayers are tired of paying for their luxuries at or expense. I would like their benifits, wages, and job protections, instead of paying for them.

Seriously, if you do not have a Teacher's Union, you can be sure that the most experienced and highest paid teachers will be fired.

Today the media and big money are paying big bucks to make sure the 1% will win.

Srm1--you know what? By the same token, thanks to the teacher's union, in MY district, the younger, more enthusiastic teachers are being laid off and the 25 yr. HACKS that are just putting in the time boosting their retirement pay have their jobs protected.

                                That argument works both ways.

Good luck Governor Scott Walker! What an enormous waste of time and money this has been for all concerned. Scott Walker has done a great job and should by all rights be commended.

A great job for the Koch Brothers, perhaps, but the state he governs? Why was it necessary to attack teachers after they conceded to everything that was asked of them? Teachers are citizens too. They wanted what was best for the state, but Walker turned them into scape goats. A governor who makes an enemy out of public workers is not a very good leader.

I don't have an issue with public employees unionizing. I am a union man myself. But these unions need to privatize their unions. There is no reason why taxpayers should pay benefits to a retiree and to his or her replacement. It is unsustainable . Privatize the unions and get off the backs of the taxpayers. That's being a good leader Amy

Failed Governor Scott Walker has fooled you, too. He is a bought and paid for agent for outside corporations who will include Wisconsin as part of their portfolio of political purchases. Walker wants to be a player on the national scene but his recall-win or lose-ends that possibility. Failed Governors always can be contributors on Fox news. Maybe Scott will get his own half hour show.

Walker is Woe unto Wisconsin-a Loser with a capital L.

So much misinformation here it's unbelievable. Both sides listen to what they are told to believe and don't bother to do the research. First on the list is that the teachers didn't pay into their own pension funds, not true, a portion of their pay was put into the fund and now a larger portion is put into the fund. If you would do some research you would find that Walker himself said that the collective bargaining had little to no affect on the budget. Next one, I'll lump these all into 1, Walker balanced the budget, cut property taxes, and eliminated the deficit. All untrue, he balanced the budget the same way Doyle and every other WI. governor did(to those who just regurgitate what they are told, it's the LAW in WI. to balance the budget), One way of balancing the budget was to count on future taxes coming in, cut funding to schools, and tech. schools, and much more. The result will be higher city and county taxes in the coming years, and it's already happening with Gateway raising taxes on homeowners(yes the school legally can raise them). The deficit is not eliminated, but it is expected to grow during Walkers term, and finally the property taxes went down because values in WI. went down not because of Walker, lets not forget statewide schools are cutting 2700 workers after this year, and he aims to dismantle the UW system, a WORLD CLASS University that he aims to destroy.

Here is what to expect after Walker wins Tuesday. In the next few years public lands will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, we will have few if any state parks, but this will happen after he gets rid of the DNR, reduces standards for pollution, passes the mining bill which by the way allows for more pollution and if that pollution leads to people dying the families of the deceased cannot sue the mining companies, in fact they can't sue anyone, all to "create" 50-700 jobs.

After public lands are sold off, Hunting will only be legal at privately run game parks which will cost you around $1500-$2000 to hunt at. Hunting on your private property will also be illegal.

Go ahead and vote for your savior Walker, just remember "be careful what you wish for it might just come true". Don't believe what I posted, do some research, it's very easy to find if you would take the time instead of believing a politician, especially one who has a long history of fraud, deceit, and lies.

DCC, schools to be auctioned off is not a bad thing for the kids, since it is clear we have failed our kids/students with the existing process. Throwing good money after bad, will not fix the problem. White boards vs blackboards has proven to be an expense that does not produce results. Go back to giving homework, go back to teaching the basics, go back to Physical Education for all, go back to teaching the students to be responsible for themselves, and stop with the three a year teacher conferences (read: vacations) at some resort and lots of booze.

His goal is to cut spending. From what you said, it should have been done years ago. At least he has started, and since Wisconsin can't print money like the Federal government can do, it needs to cut costs. As you said with lowering home values state income will be less, to cut now. Unlike taxpayers that can't see future trends in their incomes the State can. So the earlier they plan for this the better.

Any US citizen can easily get a state ID free, which is can be used as an voter ID. It is about time they make sure that actual citizens are voting not the walking dead signitures from the local graveyard. In many elections 1% voter fraud can change elections. I do know why (actually I do) Liberals want anyone that can vote (except for the military) just walk in and vote.

FOUR years in a row, I have received a new voter card, which has a portion of it which you can return if any changes have been made.

Problem is, I ALSO get on for BOTH my sons, who while ONE actually lived here for a year, both have merely used this as an address of last resort (One son lives in China, so his bank statements come here).

And EVERY year I send their cards back with the note that ONE lives in CA, and has for 6 years, and that the other lives in China.

But every year, I get another card for each.

How often is this happening, and WHO is voting by virtue of those type of cards floating around?

Just six months ago this was a "Progressive Victory". Now, it's "Dems Hope to Avoid Embarassment." All of the poisonous rhetoric from the left, the pictures of the protesters trashing the statehouse and all of the vitriol poured on this issue by the "Mainstream Media" has brought the dems to this precipice. Those near the political middle have had enough, and in a few days, you will hear their voice when the recall fails.

Governor Walker will be Governor Walker in December, but President Obama will be just plain Obama, the man who threw away the most powerful job in the world, this December.

Scott Walker may may keep his office but there is no certainty he will retain control of the Wisconsin Senate, the loss of just one more GOP senator will effectively muzzle him for the balance of his term.

Whether the Democrats win or lose it is still a loss for the Democrats/Unions. America now sees what sore losers the Dems/Unions are and the lengths they will go to when they don't get there way no matter how much it costs American Taxpayers.

David-Failed Governor Scott Walker leads you like a sheep to slaughter. The only tax payers he is concerned with are corporations and the wealthy. He longs to be nationally famous and a real player in politics. He will be just as famous as Gray Warner. An obscure answer to a Jeopardy question.

Failed Governor Scott Walker is a Loser with a capital L.

                                      Walker is Woe unto Wisconsin.

I hope Walker wins big. You Democrat's can't stand it. A Republican Govenor who actually performs. Reduces the ridiculuous payouts to Unions and not one job lost.

Oh by the way. I assume you saw Obama's unemployment numbers and revised lower numbers for April and May. Proof that he and the rest of the Democrats know nothing about creating jobs or recovery of our economy.

It is about time the Socalled Collective Bargining ends for State Employees. It has been a farce since the beginning. You can't have state employees bargining for higher compensation, and State officials bargining for Higher state worker conpensation (because they will get money from the employees unions for their next election) both conspiring against the taxpayer who has to pay for it all. All I can say is Way to Go Walker, I wish we had a Governer like you. The only shame is that state still looses the money waisted on the recalls. Maybe the loosers should pay the costs, (they can use the recall forms for the list of people to get reinbursed from).

300Michael: very well said...everyone is at the "bargaining" table when public employees unions are negotiating for more benefits and higher wages except those of us that are actually paying the bill (taxpayors)...
