Former U.S. Rep Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., in a January 2012 picture.
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle "Gabby" Giffords made a rare public appearance Tuesday night to accept the “We Are EMILY Award” from Emily’s List, a political advocacy organization that supports pro-choice women seeking office.
“Gabby’s unimaginable courage has been an inspiration to everyone in this room tonight,” said Emily’s List President Stephanie Schriock.
While Giffords did not personally accept the award, her mother, Gloria Giffords, accepted and spoke on her behalf. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., said Gabby’s attendance at the event was a testament of how much Emily’s list has meant to her.
Wasserman Schultz nodded at Giffords as she told the crowd, “This is an incredibly well deserved honor.”
During the presentation, Giffords smiled as she sat onstage flanked by her mother and good friend, Wasserman Schultz. Speaking before the hundreds in attendance, Minority leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., summed up the former Congresswomen’s impact in Washington.
“She spoke out courageously and quickly distinguished herself as a shining star who embodies the best of public service,” she said noting that her time in public service was far from over.
The yearly Emily's List award is given to recognize women who have changed the face of political power and provided leadership and inspiration.
The former Congresswoman’s mom said her daughter has been a constant source of inspiration during her recovery from an assassination attempt in Jan. 2011 in which Giffords’ was shot in the head.
Giffords mom took the podium on behalf of the former congresswoman and quickly addressed her role of accepting the award for her daughter.
“Obviously the ideal situation isn’t for me to be up here accepting this award on behalf of Gabby, but life’s not perfect.”
As the former Congresswoman’s mom reached the “self-sacrifice” part of Gifford’s message during her speech, she struggled to hold back tears. Gloria spoke of her daughter’s determination, saying “she’s working tirelessly on her recovery.”
Emily's List also used the event to unvail an award named in Giffords' honor: the “Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star” award.
Emily’s List states the award will “honor women who demonstrate the sort of commitment to community, dedication to women and families and determination and civility that have been the highlights of Giffords’ career."
Gloria said the former Congresswoman is “especially touched and honored” by the award. Before leaving the podium Gloria leaned in and offered hope to the crowd on behalf of her daughter.
Giffords’ mom said she is striving for a full recovery and her future remains very bright.
“She’ll be back fighting alongside of you,” she said.

Too bad Gabby is not running for president.
Thank God. If so she would be installing Sharia law quicker than Obam is attempting.
#I am one man You may only be one man but; you certainly aren't shy about showing your stupidity.
I second that motion stupid as stupid does
Doubly stupid, if you ask me. The idiot doesn't even know that Congresswoman Giffords is Jewish. Sharia is about the last thing on her mind. We should all be admiring her amazing discipline and determination to overcome this obstacle. I hope she is ready for 2014 and a return to public service. The people of Arizona could certainly do much worse. Consider their sitting Governor, the Wicked Witch of the West.
Is that what they are saying on Faux news? That's hysterical Santorum is the one who wanted to implement Judeo-Christian sharia law in this country. How you could get those 2 people confused is baffling.
Hey Motz.....................Im glad she is not. It is that kind of idiotic "emotional vote' that got us into the fix we are in today. It is proabably hard for you to remember but being President use to stand for something!
What an idiotic statement. Either post some link supporting your assertion that Giffords wants to see Sharia law as part of our system or go crawl back under your rock. I certainly doubt you could find any since Giffords is Jewish and would never want anything to do with seeing Sharia law as any part of the US justice system. You show your complete ignorance with your idiotic statement.
I may not agree with all of Giffords' stands on political issues, but I do admire her courage and determination in fighting to come back from such a serious injury. I certainly hope she makes a full recovery, even if I doubt I would ever vote for her.
Evil people rarely see the evil in themselves, but they are quick to perceive it in those that are not.
No it isn't!
All the people that took the gunman down, the doctors and nurses are the ones that deserve to be honored.
I wish her well, but I am sick of this woman being glorified when there were so many other people shot, injured and even killed.
Give he honor to the right people, without them, she wouldn't be here.
Sam, there is no such thing as "Judeo-Christian sharia law." Think before you write.
Sorry, I dont get it either. I cannot believe this celebrity hype we bestow on our Congresspeople. While Ms. Gifford's injury was tragic and her recovery remarkable, I think it's insane that we focus on her and forget that 6 people were killed beside her that day. Six families lost loved ones, six families without any means of recovery. Yet we continue to gush over Ms. Gifford. I would be embarrassed from all this attention and the apathy toward the people who were irreparably harmed that day. Our Congresspeople (both parties) have continually let us down. They get special treatment, lie, cheat and use the chaos of government to perpetuate their own job security. We spend hundreds of millions of dollars to elect a President (who is by definition not given the power they claim to have during the election) and yet we allow Congress to fail over and over again. This is another example of their free lunch and endless celebrity. How very sad indeed.
I agree, the ignorant left can't help but heap praise on their beloved politicians as if they were really looking out for everyones best interest.
The event was glorifying women who love to have the otion of murdering unborn children who happen to be inconvenient by no fault of their own. America is truely sick and rotten at it very core. We went to great length to preserve Giffords life and she turns around and does everything in her power to destroy the life of our MOST vulnerable. And liberals love her for it.
mddr: It's not an emotional statement at all. Gabby Giffords is principled, courageous and tough. Gabby has already proven that she stands up for something. Yes, in her present condition, a campaign would be rigorous. However, she's been through far worse. What a leader she would make. Perhaps, her day will come.
How, exactly, do you murder something that has been born yet?
Did you ever hear of her before she was shot? I think not, unless you're from Arizona.
Hey mddr-you're right. Being President used to stand for something. Like unbudgeted wars, war profiteering, removal of judges for not complying to ideologies, outing covert agents, illegal wiretapping.....
A lady of grace and courage.
Second to none.
I'm sorry, but I don't understand just what's she's done to warrant an award. No disrespect intended, but she's the survivor of a shooting. I'm glad she's recovering, but has she really been an inspiration to anyone for just recovering from her doctor's prescribed treatment?
The articles mentions the "We Are EMILY Award” from Emily’s List, supports pro-choice women seeking office. Giffords is a former member of Congress, so this article and the Award is a bit confusing:
- Is she seeking office somewhere else?
- Is she some type of strong advocate for pro-abortion (or pro-choice as the journalist describes it)?
- Has she done something noteworthy to promote abortions during her term in Congress?
What am I missing here?
.
a lady of grace and courage????? are you nucking futs. the what the hell would you call a 18 year old kid who gets into a car wreck, as the driver- T- boned at 80+ mph- and is found hanging out the passenger rear window, seat belt still buckled, and survived? do you call him god?
Where is her astronaut husband? He wasn't even mentioned.
Madman - I would call the kid extremely lucky, just like gifford was extremely lucky. What will really define the teenager or giffords is what they do going forward.
It was a women's event - why would they be discussing her husband?
Whoa, John! You're employing reason and logic here. You can't do that!
I think I'm a bit more cynical than you. I think Emily's List is using Giffords' situation to promote themselves. It's not as if she is an up and comer. Many people throughout the nation sympathize with her plight and wish her the best, so here comes a self-serving organization looking to steal some of that capital for themselves.
This is despicable behavior. Ask yourself this question - If Giffords had not been shot and had not become such a sympathetic figure, would Emily's List be honoring her so conspicuously, even if she held the exact same views?
Think twice about those you support, particularly those who will use an injured woman to drum up publicity.
A very quick search reveals she is pro-choice, supports gun rights, anti-illegal immigration (kind of, she seems to do a political tight-rope act on that one) and is a critic of "no child left behind".
arguesforsport:
So what? What makes HER worthy of receiving an award from Emily's List, whatever Emily's List is? The article says it's for "pro-choice women seeking office". Again, is Giffords "seeking office?" Giffords has resigned from Congress, but is she seeking elected office somewhere now? Not to besmirch Giffords' service, but she's NOT SEEKING OFFICE. So WHY is she receiving an award to recognize "women seeking office?" This self-aggrandizing article is a filled with vapid tripe.
Just what did Giffords do in her career as a US Representative to warrant such adoration? She was shot by a crazy person, along with several others that sad day. Six people died. Do you remember their name? These are the people who should be honored and remembered:
- Christina Taylor Green, 9
- Dorthy "Dot" Morris, 76
- John Roll, 63
- Phyllis Schneck, 79
- Dorwan Stoddard, 76
- Gabriel "Gabe" Zimmerman, 30
I would venture to say they are more worthy of reorganization that someone who simply was shot and is recovering due to the excellent medical care provided to her by the Federal Employees Health Benefit plan. Giffords was shot and she's been following her Doctors prescribed treatment plan. I'm happy for her, and wish her well...
BUT WHAT HAS GIFFORDS DONE TO DESERVE ANY AWARD, let along gushing praise by Wasserman-Shultz for "incredible courage." Courage is acting in the absence of fear, not recovering from an injury.
.
Did these people make a heroic recovery from a nearly fatal attempted murder?
Were they known for anything especially heroic before they were murdered.
So what heroic deeds should they be honored for?
Receiving an award? She's already getting rewards enough receiving full pay and full health benefits the rest of her life for having been a congress member: The same group the public has expressed anger towards for years for self-appointed annual raises, perks, etc. etc.
Gabrielle Giffords is a hypocrite. She calls for civility but remains friends with Debbie Wasserman Schutlz? WTF? That woman is the most UNCIVIL creature in politics! And what people fail to realize (since the media has made Giffords into some saint since surviving a bullet to her head) is that Giffords herself ran one of the ugliest campaigns against Jesse Kelly in 2010. I hope he wins this year. I'm sorry Giffords was shot, but really now, she isn't an angel and is a major, major hypocrite. I love how the Democrats are blatantly taking advantage of her now and exploiting her. Shame on all of them.
Have you ever had a family member with a brain injury?? Probably not, because you're attitude stinks! it is Miss Giffords preogative to associate with whom she pleases. That is not your call. The fact that this woman struggles to make it back when she had such a brilliant future says more about her character than those of you who are quick to criticize. In this country we are quick to throw people under the bus and have very little insight to what brain trauma victims are going through. My own husband suffered a stroke a year ago and believe me he is determined to make it all the way back. Even if he doesn't I have learned a lot about this man with a will of steel.
Place yourself in others position on occasion and put your brain in gear before your mouth.
my my my me thinks you need anger management class
@sherron:
What does her "brain injury" have to do with what Belle1980 stated? I don't know what she was like or how she ran her campaign, as I'd never heard of her before she got shot. So, I can't say if it's true or not.
But nothing Belle1980 stated has anything to do with Giffords' "brain injury. Just because she was shot in the head, doesn't mean that she was/is a saint and just because she's on the road to recovery doesn't mean that her motives and actions can't be second-guessed.
So, perhaps it is you who should put YOUR brain in gear, read what what written and understand it BEFORE you put YOUR mouth in gear.
For you to even leave a statement like that is beyond comprehension. Here we had someone who was almost lost her life and was almost killed by a bullet and you have the decency to say something like that? Where is your sense of morality? maybe you should leave comments on the Rush Limbaugh page..or better yet, Fox News.
@Belle1980 - I live in Giffords' district and she is one of the most honorable people. She ran a civilized campaign against this Kelly character. You truly are a partisan! One who's opinion deserves to be discarded and held up for ridicule. Shame on you, shame on you.
I think that we all agree that it was a terrible thing that Ms Giffords was shot and a wonderful thing that she is working so hard to recover. I never heard of her until the shooting but will not say a bad thing against her, not will I say anything good about her as I do not know her. I can only comment on what others are saying while they are using her for their gain. I read nowhere what it is she did, or what bills she presented, or what laws were inacted by Ms Giffords that got her rasied to a saint. I do live with a person trying to recover from a brain injury suffered in Iraq and the majority of these saints are dumped upon by a system at the VA hospitals that are unstaffed and underfunded. Why don't these saints have the same health coverage that the lawmakers that approved sending them to war, as yes BOTH PARTIES APPROVED SENDING THEM TO FIGHT FOR US.
Liberals are such pantywaists, You lib guys should have been born female, wearing your little emotions on your sleeve like you do. The question here is WHY DO YOU MORONS MAKE IDOLS AND GODS OUT OF THESE MISERABLE POLITICIANS? These people look at you as a useful idiot that they can lie to and manipulate into giving them more power while taking away YOUR rights. This bunch of nasty women (including Giffords) are celebrating the destruction of unborn children. If they had their way we would go back to sucking the brains out of 9 month unborns because they happen to be in convenient. You people are really sick and dangerous.
Rob73, you can't put in gear what you haven't got!!
Henry that's BS.
She ran a smear campaign agains Kelly through a PAC. She is a hypocrite and just another politician. She go shot in the head, so what. There are many young men who have come back from Afganistan and Iraq who have tramatic brain injuries, but no one calling them inspirational heros.
Belle, you seem to represent the very insecure men and women here that choose to denigrate Ms. Giffords. I suspect you are affiliated with Jesse Kelly's election effort. Ms. Giffords performed her job well in representing us in Tucson and the surrounding areas. As a Tucson native, she understood what it took to maintain the lifestyle we cherish and yet push for progress where it made sense. She was not a zealot blinded by some dogma that had to be followed, but rather a person capable of compromise and conciliation.
It is possible that in the upcoming double election we may see what dogmatic zealotry can bring to our town. If the flag-bearer for conservative values prevails we can start to kiss more of the Tucson we know good-bye. We can look forward to becoming more like the megalopolis to our north, a sad melange of out-of-state kitsch that erases the whole reason to be in Arizona.
Ms. Giffords was outstanding before she was injured. She did right by her constituents and she is to be admired in her drive to recover.
Sir Nikon
You just hate anybody and everybody who doesn't agree with everything FUX tolod you to believe.
A lot of people would use her position to get up on a soap-box and scream "you have to listen to me now". She doesn't. She is the very embodiment of poise.
She can hardly speak and her faculties are not working at 100%.
Gabrielle Giffords is a hypocrite. She calls for civility but remains friends with Debbie Wasserman Schultz?
She doesn't get on her soap box and scream because she can hardly talk. Otherwise I am sure she would take advantage of what happened to her. But other Democrats are doing it for her, so it doesn't matter.
Belle, what a vicious, unkind think to say. And you call Gabrielle Giffords uncivil? Wow.
Ah Belle, you misguided fool. Go back to watching your Fox "News" and direct your hate filled rants against the GOP "leadership" that wants to take this country back to the 1700s.
Right, because the 1700's really sucked, the country was in a shambles....not like now, where we are all prosperous, we are one nation, we are all working together and wanting to help our neighbor with their struggles....we no longer only think, "whats in it for me" "I got to get mine" "gimme my free stuff"...the sheeple of this nation are just wonderful now a days....
belle is one of those very frighetened right wing hate mongers appears he hates all democrats because they are all bad and all republicans are fine upstanding citizens LOL get real dude
Using the fact that she nearly got killed to celebrate the fact that she supported the killing of innocent children? Wow.
You're actually saying that we were better off in the 1700's? Women had no rights, people had slaves, and people wore holsters with guns. Let me guess, you're a conservative?
Now none of us have rights, we are all slaves, and I still carry my gun in a holster, except in the crime spree zones...Let me guess, you are a socialist or communist either way, 20 years ago this government paid me to kill people like you, so, even going back 20 or 30 years would be nice.
Belle, libs don't like the truth. Now her handler is running for her vacated seat and is packaging himself as a moderate democrat. The are all self serving, lying hypocrites and Gabby new role is promoting the liberal agenda through her celebrity status with the libs.
Well, I got that right. Here is what I posted in January about sweet Gabby and Congresscreatures:
well all the remarks blow me a way ,there are some really trash remarks ,by some once removed trailer park trash rmarks , the posts are not here for political soap box for wack jobs
yes these whack jobs are sitting in their mommies basement too frightined to come out into the light
You seriously saved your unintelligent, clinically insane post from JANUARY to repost again?? On a crappy news site?? Woah. hahaha.
smh an award for what being shot in the head as far as video games go i thi9nk the shooter should of got the award nice shot HEADSHOT lol unrealtournament ftw
I think many more rightwing nuts would like to go on shooting sprees. They're just so angry and hateful.
How is it you libs always spout off garbage that never has actual facts or reference your actual government stats? Oh that's right you never learned history and your drones lining up for slaughter by the liberal government you support. You haven't got a clue to the reality of how vulgar, hatful, vindictive, destructive, and vile obnoxious treats that if were ever made by your so called right wing nuts they would be in prison if they made those same statements made by spineless weak suck deranged left wing screwballs. Stick to sucking on your glass pip, pimping out your teen age crack hos', having your gang-bang parties, postings on you tube, wearing your pants down past your ass, and keep spending your daddies trust fund money. You're really an embarrassment.
Sorry it it wasn't a "right wing" that shot her.
well you call yourself a man but I wonder
Gabby's shooter, left wing nut job....No we don't want to go on shooting sprees, but, show up at my house with your little gimme my free stuff, and I am prepared...Just waiting for you zombies to show up, and then the police will need a whole lot of chalk lines....but, if you don't show up, no shooting, see how that works
See what I mean by hate. I'd hate too if I was a fat, bald, old white guy. The fact that you even sit around and contemplate people coming to your house looking for free stuff and how you may dispatch them makes you a nut.
It's only paranoia until it happens, then it's prepared. I know you probably want to forget, but, remember the occupy wall street, or wisconsin thousands of people with no respect for personal property..of course we have never had mobs in this country, our government has never lied to us, has never used us. Hey, isn't it time for you to go get your welfare check?
Don, you really are insane.
I will not suggest you get help.
You wouldn't anyway.
While Giffords did not personally accept the award, her mother, Gloria Giffords, accepted and spoke on her behalf. Interesting. You would think her mom was thinking - where did I go wrong and why didnt I abort this bitch.
What a lizard brain!!!
Where did you get the idea that you are a man. Go back to the swamp like a good lizard.
I realize what happened to her is life-changing & I am happy she survived. However, there are so many things about this situation I AM NOT HAPPY about. What about all the other people involved in this?! You have many involved yet you hear about the Judge & the little girl. RARE PUBLIC APPEARANCE?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! THEY POSE FOR PICTURES ALL THE TIME!
She was NOT required to work on the weekend yet she was out there & guess what? Workman's comp picked up the tab right away (no fighting to get her paperwork thru) while my husband has fought for over 3 years with them.
They turned around a TOP surgeon on his way to IRAQ to our SOLDIERS to operate on her. Excuse me? Noone else could've done this?!
And now she has become the saint who walks among us! There have been thousands of joe shmoes shot performing ACTS OF HEROISM who don't get recognized at all (police, etc.) yet she was standing there doing nothing but shaking hands! BRAVO Laughner for elevating her to a saint who walks among us!
Gabby is an inspiration to people who have had a terrible, life-changing event in their personal lives. Her strength, courage and hard work to reach goals for recovery show that no matter what happens, you can summon the strength to carry on.
Her support of women/families and their needs is worthy of this award. Her mother and dear friend, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz demonstrate that the love of family and good friends have a major impact on Gabby's success as she moves forward in her recovery.
I wish her every success and thank her for her work in the US Senate. Many blessings.
I took a poop this morning do I deserve an award... I'm glad she is recovering but what a joke!
My, my, so many bitter little people here this morning. At least you are showing your true nature. There are no doubts as to what kind of people you are, and the rest of us are so very happy not to know you personally.
I'm sure your a shinning star of a human being....never bitter or angry about any subject...no not you!
Here's what I think
“She’ll be back fighting alongside of you,” she said....
Yay...she fights for her life...struggles to survive...works relentlessly to recover to normal health so that she can fight another day for women to legally murder their unborn children....does anyone else find that to be extremely hypocritical, disgustingly vile and just plain absurd?...sad, very sad.....excuse me I am going to be sick : (
“She’ll be back fighting alongside of you,” she said......
Yes she barely hung on to life, struggled to survive and relentlessly works to rehabilitate so she can fight another day to let women legally murder their unborn children...? Does anyone else find that simply appalling, hypocritical, disgustingly vile and simply absurd?? ...excuse me...im gonna be sick : (
"I am", "J.P.", "American", "Belle", Shalyse", "Kent", despicable comments from all of you. "May a bird of paradise fly up your nose, may an elephant caress you with it's toes" is about the nicest thing I can say to you lot.
You forgot your also a mooron! I'm glad she is recovering but what does she deserve an award for? Why don't we also give her the nobel peace prize???
Cant...obama got that for doing nothin....
She didn't get the award for getting shot in the head, She got it for her political ability as a female politician. Geez, some people are just stupid.
John- What did she do other than being pro-abortion that every other female politician has done? The ONLY thing different IS she was shot in the head. What is "political ability" as the other female politicians as well as myself would like to know.
What the hell has she done but get shot? What about the service men and women that get shot or hurt then we hear nothing no awards for them.
It really bothers me when journalists blow things way out of proportion by calling her a courageous woman. She was shot and is recovering like any other human being would be doing in her situation. She didn't run into a burning building to rescue someone. She happened to be an unfortunate victim of some ludicrous madman. No more ,no less. I think she is resilient but certainly not courageous.
There are many different kinds of courage. Running into a burning building to rescue someone is one of them. Fighting for your life after nearly getting your brains blown out by a deranged gunman is another, and this is the kind of courage we are talking about here.
What you describe isn't courage.....but survival. I have no qualms at all with the congresswoman but rather the way the news media tries to champion people for doing nothing.Sure she is making a better than expected recovery, but that is more related to the medical treatment she is getting and her efforts as well. Everyone is a HERO in todays society.
Is it also courageous to rip the fetus of an unborn child from the womb of it's mother?
I can't believe how utterly miserable people are with their own lives, that they should be so hateful toward a person that has defied death and made a remarkable recovery against all odds! Every person on Earth has a past way of life. Including all of you. Perhaps getting shot in the head would change you just a little bit for the better. if you put yourself in her situation, you would want support from you family, friends, and loved ones despite what an a--hole you may have been before. I'm sure EVERYone always agrees with your ways and points of view too, right?
And she deserves an award for this... How about we give an award for participatation to everyone...
I can't believe how utterly miserable people are with their own lives, that they should be so hateful toward a person that they would support murdering them when they are just trying to finish being born .....at least she had the chance to fight to survive....all of you so sympathetic should be thankful she wasn't ripped from the womb so she could be born and have a life to fight for....doubt she would have fought very hard during her own abortion.....you people are twisted
I don't guess Sharpshooter Palin was in attendance?!
Know.. Democrats and liberals only support really ugly women. Like Wasserman-Schultz , the sexual identity challenged head of the DNC. If yo have become successful without demonizing everyone else, burning the flag, championing every socialist liberal cause then they do not consider you worth. Thank God.
I am glad Ms. Giffords is recovering but if you check her speeches prior to the shooting she didn't make much sense then either. Maybe she is 100 percent and we just don't know it.
Well, swabbie (navyvet), it doesn't seem that you rose much above captain of the head in your navy career. To boldly make an inane comment that a certain group supports "real ugly women" is a testimonial to your baser thoughts. I'll bet you are a real laugh when in the company of women.
Ms. Giffords was held in high esteem in the house and certainly in her district. She acted as a centrist, not a far-left liberal. Your cheap shot at her puts you in league with the soldier who is getting his dishonorable papers for saying he wouldn't follow Obama's orders. Apparently, he didn't read the fine print of his contract.
Pelosi makes me want to vomit. I despise that person.
much like I felt about Bush.
Surprise! I get the same feeling from you!
Glad Giffords is ok, i really am. But i'm sick of hearing about her like she is some kind of Super Hero ! Same goes for the Tim "I'm on my knees" Tebow.
Here you go msnbc, prove you are not unfair and impartial like everyone is saying in their homes and workplaces about you (if you were aware how much it would frighten you).Collapse some of these disgusting redneck comments. Wait, I guess they aren't about Romney, or complained about by his corporate, paid, mercenary internet thugs. I guess not everyone has to feel like they are fair, honest, and decent. I think those types are called sociopaths.
Just how the left works...."prove you are not unfair msnbc and take away the oppositions right to free speech".......way to show your party's true nature stevenjoe!.....and wait a minute...is the term "redneck" politically correct?.....you bigoted slanderer!!
Why don't the rename their organization to "Pro Murder of Unborn Children."
Why don't you rename your organization "Keep Women in Their Place"?
The thing thaat always amazes me is that people like you scream about the second amendment but yet you want to take away a womans right to make a choice. Laws are only good if you like them, right?
Future women are murdered every day...in the womb. In many countries abortion is used to get rid of the "undesirable" female babies. So if you want to talk about keeping women in their place...just continue to advocate for abortion on demand.
