Santorum suspends presidential campaign

Rick Santorum suspends his 2012 presidential campaign at an event in Gettysburg, Pa.

Updated 3:02 p.m. - Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum suspended his campaign on Tuesday, clearing Mitt Romney’s path to the Republican presidential nomination.

Citing weekend reflection with his family, prompted in part by a hospital stay for his youngest daughter, Santorum suspended his campaign, effective today.

"Ladies and gentleman, we made the decision to get into this race at our kitchen table against all the odds," Santorum said in remarks to reporters in Gettysburg, Pa.

"We made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race for us is over for me and we will suspend our campaign effective today. We are not done fighting."

The announcement effectively stifles opposition to Romney from within the GOP; amid signs that the Republican establishment has started to rally around Romney, the former Massachusetts governor no longer faces any serious conservative challenger.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul remain active candidates, though neither of them have a plausible path to winning the 1,144 delegates needed to secure the nomination.

The decision comes two weeks before the Pennsylvania presidential primary. Santorum had faced the prospect of an embarrassing loss to Romney that threatened to short-circuit any of his future political aspirations, either statewide or nationally.

A look at the Pennsylvania politician — his career on Capitol Hill and his White House aspirations.

Santorum’s announcement also follows the second health scare of the year for his daughter Bella who suffers from the chromosomal disorder Trisomy 18.

However, the former senator also huddled with conservative supporters recently to mull whether a path forward for his campaign truly existed. As recently as April 3, when he lost the Wisconsin primary to Romney, Santorum vowed to press forward, and described the race for the nomination as only having reached “halftime.”

Still, the course of the primary campaign meant a remarkable political resurrection for Santorum since his landslide defeat in 2006, when he sought a third term in the Senate. His presidential campaign offered a path to political redemption that had been unthinkable, even as recently as the end of last year.

Santorum called Romney earlier today to relay news of his decision.

"Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran. He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation," Romney said in a written statement following Tuesday's announcement. "We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity."

First Read: Santorum's surprising ride

From non-factor to Iowa victor
Santorum was a non-factor in the campaign for most 2011 until a last-minute surge in Iowa, where he had traveled more than any other candidate.

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum announces that he is suspending his presidential campaign. Watch his entire statement.

The former Pennsylvania senator had done the first nominating state the “traditional” way, having traveled to all 99 of Iowa’s counties.

Still, a series of candidates – Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Herman Cain and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich – had taken turns surging to the top of the polls in the Hawkeye State before Santorum got his boost, in late December, on the eve of the state’s caucuses.

Santorum battled Romney to a virtual tie in Iowa before the state’s Republican Party crowned Romney the apparent winner by a slim, eight-vote margin.

It wasn't until Jan. 21 – the day of the South Carolina primary – that the Iowa GOP reversed itself due to unaccounted votes and declared Santorum the actual winner of the caucuses. By then, Romney had steam-rolled his opponents to win the New Hampshire primary, and Gingrich had re-emerged as the leading conservative challenger to Romney in the Palmetto State.

Santorum re-emerged as Romney’s biggest threat on Feb. 7, when he stunned the front-runner by winning contests in Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri.

Santorum as chief Romney alternative
Santorum’s victories in those states again laid bare fissures in the Republican Party over Romney’s candidacy. The most conservative elements of the party appeared unwilling to line up behind Romney. And with Gingrich fading in the aftermath of an onslaught of negative advertising in Florida, Santorum again claimed the mantle of chief Romney alternative.

The emergence of a supportive super PAC – the Red, White and Blue Fund – helped Santorum make his case. Much of that group’s financing came from investor Foster Friess.

The turning point in the Santorum-Romney battle came in at the end of February.  Rather than skip the primary in Michigan – the state where Romney was raised and where his father had been an iconic Republican governor – Santorum decided to take his battle to Romney’s home turf.

Meet the Press moderator David Gregory shares his reaction to Rick Santorum's speech and confirms that both Santorum and Mitt Romney have spoken on the phone.

The campaigning turned heavily on issues of class, and Santorum emphasized his commonness with the state’s hard-hit working and middle classes.

He was aided by Democratic-led efforts to remind voters of Romney’s opposition to the 2009 bailouts of General Motors and Chrysler, along with Romney’s own missteps (among them, a highly-touted address to a cavernous Ford Field).

But Santorum also found himself the victim of tough ads launched by Romney and Restore Our Future, the pro-Romney super PAC.

The former senator was also dogged by questions about hot-button social issues, including contraception – a subject that was at the center of an intense national debate over women’s health issues.

Romney eventually eked out a three-point victory of Santorum, but carried momentum from Michigan (and Arizona, where he won a primary the same day) into Super Tuesday’s slate of 10 contests on March 6. There, Romney used the same strategy he had in Michigan to win six of the states, including Ohio, where Santorum had also sought to challenge Romney.

But Santorum was again able to beat back Romney, who gained some separation from his challengers in the delegate count after Super Tuesday, by way of winning Mississippi and Alabama’s primaries. Romney campaigned fleetingly in the states, but the deep conservatism of both states tilted the contests toward Santorum.

The Gingrich factor
Those primaries also made clear, though, that Gingrich’s continued presence in the race had eaten into Santorum’s support among conservatives.

Backers of the former senator started demanding Gingrich’s exit from the race, but the former House speaker defiantly vowed to continue with his campaign through the Republican convention this summer in Tampa.

NBC's Brian Williams, Chuck Todd and Meet the Press moderator David Gregory explain what Rick Santorum has gained from running for the GOP nomination.

All the while, Romney continued to amass delegates by winning caucuses and primaries in far-flung U.S. territories.

And it was one U.S. territory, Puerto Rico, where Romney finally trounced Santorum, despite the ex-senator having campaigned there. He subsequently paraded into Illinois, where he won the March 20 primary in the Land of Lincoln.

Romney’s decisive win in Illinois prompted many national party leaders who had remained neutral – former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, among others – to get off the fence and endorse Romney in hopes of hastening the end of the primary campaign.

Santorum persevered through the April 3 primaries in D.C., Maryland and Wisconsin, then left the campaign trail when his daughter was admitted to the hospital last week.

The ex-senator was reflective in his remarks announcing the suspension of his campaign.

"Miracle after miracle, this race was as improbable as any race you'll ever seen for president," he said, referencing the 11 states and millions of votes won over the course of his campaign. He made no mention of Romney.

Romney still faces token opposition in his march to formalize the nomination. Both Gingrich and Santorum signaled that they would continue – for now – with their campaigns in the aftermath of Santorum's announcement.

"I am committed to staying in this race all the way to Tampa so that the conservative movement has a real choice.  I humbly ask Senator Santorum’s supporters to visit Newt.org to review my conservative record and join us as we bring these values to Tampa," said Gingrich, whose persistence in the race had divided votes with Santorum in some pivotal contests.

Paul's campaign manager said that the Texas congressman would "plan to continue running hard" through the August convention in Tampa.

Political whatever aside, his daughter is extremely ill and in the hospital. Like the guys beliefs or not, it's still a ill child is heartbreaking. I think the hallelujah is a bit uncalled for given the reasons behind his departure from the campaign.

And before I get crucified, I'm Jewish and can't stand the guy. Must be the mom in me.

First of all I want to say that I hope that the Santorum family is able to deal with their daughters illness effectively and that it will allow her to live as happy and healthy a life as humanly possible.

Secondly, as the article points out, even Santorum had the most minuscule chance of pulling out the nomination at this point. Why Paul and Gingrich continue at this point is beyond my comprehension. But it is their right and if they want to continue wasting their money and that of others, that's their business.

wayne,

Like Obama doesn't have one? He has flip flopped on more issues than anyone. The biggest one is the heath care mandate when Hilary Clinton said health care should have a mandate, Obama said it was unconstitutional to do that, now we see where he really stands on the issue. So don't just act like it is Rep that do the flip flopping, Obama is the best at this kind of politics.

Just were are we going with Obama have any of you sheep actually asked yourself this question? I will tell you he is going to destroy American life as we know it. 53% of Americans can't TAKE while only 47% PAY it doesn't work. Than you have all of those people that get government assistance, that pay nothing in taxes, saying the ones that do pay taxes aren't paying enough. When are we going to start rewarding hard work in this country again and make it so the lazy can't lay around on our dime.

On a personal note my Prayers go out to the Whole Santorum family and especially for little Bella

Again, Ron Paul gets no respect from the media even though he's been drawing much larger crowds of supporters than Gingrich, Santorum or Romney.

If Santorum does not man up then let's hope Ron Paul goes Independent.

Anyone who quits their campaign for President should NEVER be allowed to run again! I don't care what reason he has for suspending his campaign, because he just gave up on all those foolish enough to vote for and support him. He had a chance to make a difference if he wanted to stick with it and now he gave up all clout to say anything. Rick is about as relevant now as Sarah Palin and Herman Cain.

pardon my cynicism...what this really is, is santorum taking what he would like people to see as an honorable escape route. i doubt very much that he would quit the race if him and romney were to swap places.

it is clear that he isnt going to win, but at least, when it comes time for him to find another job, he can go on TV and rub in his pro family, holier than thou, moral superiority bona fides by saying how much he cares about his family.

and here is the thing: im not being mean. he has touted his family tragedies as a way to leverage the sympathy vote in the past.

i dont think his decision is entirely 100% political, now that would be mean. i dont think he made a conscious decision to use his daughter for political gain. but i am certain that he knows full well that retelling this story in the future sounds a lot better than saying that he was pretty soundly defeated by romney. i do think if he were ahead he would have probably not called it quits.

His decision had nothing to do with his daughters health or party unity. It has more to do with preserving his credibility(hah!) four years down the line. He will not gain the nomination and was about to get his ass handed to him by the people who know him best and that would not look good for his future aspirations as a presidential candidate.

In the end, Santorum would have never won, he's too extreme.

So the battle for the middle class and independents begins. Romney has a lot of back tracking to do, and hopefully Americans will remember his extreme positions during the primaries.

Where does it say he quit because of his daughter? She's had this disease from day 1, been hospitalized multiple times (including at least one previous time during the campaign), yet he pressed on then. This was all about avoiding a defeat in PA that would have ended the resurrection of his political career. If it had ever been about the child, he wouldn't have run to begin with, he'd have stayed around to spend as much time with her as he could. Quick fact: Only 10% of Those who have Trisomy 18 live to see their 1st birthday, and she's in that 10% that made it past it. He should be relishing every day he still has with her. Being a father, I can't even imagine being away from my daughter in that situation. I'm sure he convinced himself it was his duty to the country, or some crap like that, but honestly, it most certainly lowers my opinion of him as a father. That's my opinion, though, I'm sure there are those who see what he's doing as "noble".

Oh, and she was released last night according to CNN, so she's not actually in the hospital at the moment

I have nothing but sympathy for Rick's daughter, but she is beside the point.

Rick is quitting now because he doesn't want to lose his home state. He is quitting because he cannot win. And the fact that Santorum is unelectable, like Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann and Newt Gingrich, gives me some faith in the American electorate. Even Republicans are rejecting the side of religious extremism, and that's a positive step.

What's not so positive is that Mitt Romney has already picked up their anti-secular rhetoric.

Isn't this the second time Santorum has suspended his campaign for his daughter's sake? If his daughter is sick, maybe he should spend time taking care of her and stop running all together. If for some reason he were to become president, he couldn't suspend being president if there was an illness in his family. He needs to think about his family first and stop trying to be something he will not be.

Come on Rick, do the right thing and stop playing around... drop out, you have more important matters to tend to.

They'll actually have to knuckle down and come up with something funny instead of just copying stuff from the speeches from the GOP candidates....thank goodness Newt is still lumbering along and shooting his mouth off from time to time, it will get pretty boring when his ship finally sinks, although I noticed his business entered Chapter 7 to be liquidated this past week....so the secret, sneaky candidate that has been hiding in plain sight is Ron Paul, and he never says anything remotely funny.

This is going to be a boring few month until the real contest starts at the end of the summer.

Well, but he knew the condition of his child before he entered the race, and, unlike most other American Children who are "ill" but can't afford to be in "the hospital" this group of Republicans have no sympathy whatsoever for ANYBODY but themselves.

He's worked for the Federal Government and his entire family is covered with a Cadillac Plan, paid for by those of us whom HE is against having ANY quality affordable health care whatsoever

    Bye bye Santorum!

    tyler

I think suspending bill for the comment he made was a little critical. There are sheep that just follow the pack on both sides of politics, there is no denying that, and pointing that out I think is part of the discussion. Besides, if you start suspending people for comments like that, you may as well shut down the vine because most are directed at one party or the other, and therefore are directed disrespectfully at the opposite side. I understand you have a job to do so please don't take this as me disrespecting you. :-)

By the way, I have a question. It is really annoying having to reopen collapsed major comments. Is there any way that if the first comment is not offensive that it can remain open and not be collapsed? Refreshing and finding where you were is really kind of a pain.

Once this farce is over, I'll be interested to know just many millions our so-called "job creators" wasted on this dog and pony show, but I guess it'd be worth the gamble considering what they have to gain on their quest to economically enslave the American people. One more dollar tossed in the coffers, one less dollar for the people actually making the money. Yup, You.

What is it like, to be constantly lying to your self (talking to the extreme Left and Right)? If you only see your party as the victim and the other party as the bully, you have reality problems. Nobody takes you seriously when all you have in the way of support for your side, is ridicule for the other side.

Romney was pro Universal Health before Obama was - oh no, now what do we attack? I'm sure you will find something.

Half of Trisomy 18 babies carried full term will be stillborn, and less than 10% of the rest survive to their first birthday. Those few living beyond childhood have significant developmental delays that do not allow them to live independently. Bella may recover from her latest illness, but she'll never be well; therefore, Santorum's decision to run for president in the first place was never hinged on her health. Likewise, his bowing out at this point is not about her either.

I agree with Ursula...Santorum knew his little girl was in bad shape when he decided to run so he shouldn't be trying to garner some type of sympathy now. Sure he has an obligation to his family, but at this point, he also has just as much of an obligation to his staff and supporters as well.

Ursula, my friend had a trisomy 18 baby. She lived for 9 months. Their lives didn't stop, but when it was the end, and they knew it was coming as the typical cause of death is "forgetting" to breath, they took the time off from life to revel in every moment, which amounted to a month. Obviously she is well cared for and doing fairly well to have made it to the age of 3.

I think it's ridiculous to speculate and even make light of a situation you know nothing about. Cynicism is all fine and dandy, but when a seriously ill child is involved it just makes you look like an @!$%#.

I am glad to see Santorum finally drop out. I do not buy that his daughter's health had much to do with it. I think it was more the prospect of being completely embarrassed and having his political future come to an end by being trounced in the PA primary by Romney. It is good that now the Republican party can shift focus from the infighting over the nomination to working towards beating Obama in November. This country can not afford four more years of Obama. In particular, it can not afford what Obama would do to this country if he were allowed four years without having to worry about getting reelected.

So having an ill child precludes you from running for president, to begin with?

Did you read my post at all or just interpret on the fly? The job of being president is a lot bigger than the concerns of one child. There have been THOUSANDS of children lost in Iraq and Afghanistan that are all the president's responsibility. THOUSANDS more living in poverty and sickness across the country - also the president's responsibility. So he could never take a leave of absence to spend it with just one child - not even his own. If Santorum wasn't up to that challenge, he had no business running.

I believe he recognized that fact very clearly, so anyone suggesting that he suspended his campaign for any reason other than his political future are fooling themselves.

He left at one point to go home because of his daughter......he knew she was not well before he entered this arena but he could always use her as an out. Why bother to get into the race when you have a needy, ill child? He assumed the outcome of the Pennsylvania primary might be bad for him and his ego. He didn't want to see that fiasco. I agree with JS in SD... Santorum did not give any real reason for dropping out of the race.

The decision comes two weeks before the Pennsylvania presidential primary. Santorum had faced the prospect of an embarrassing loss to Romney that threatened to short-circuit any of his future political aspirations, either statewide or nationally.

Most likely he finally opened his eyes and read the writing on the wall.

Tellingly, he did not endorse Romney.

Mitt Romney believes that Jesus Christ is the son of God, and that is all he needs to believe to be in tune with Mathew, Mark, Luke, John and Paul. There is a vast difference in the doctrines of the Catholic Church and the Baptists. Don't know if you are old enough to remember that the Baptists were sure the world would end over "Catholic" John Kennedy's election.

Only one thing is needful and that is a belief and commitment to Jesus. For evangelicals, you need to dust off your Bibles and see what God Hath said. There is no foundation for Conservatives, Christians or anyone who wants a restored America who is Free and Prosperous to say anything negative about Mitt Romney.

Now, if you want socialism, restrained freedoms, unemployment and High Prices on all commodities, then Obama is your man. He will trash the Constitution and your guaranteed Freedoms; he will make more failed policy decisions, bankrupt the country....The line is drawn in the bedrock of the land. Those who honor and cherish our country and those who want a change in all we've held dear since the beginning of our nation.

Our ancestors had to fight for our Freedom. All we have to do is vote the Charlatan out of office to maintain our Freedom and more perfect Union.

I don't think that Rick Santorum is using his daughter's illness as an excuse to get out. I think he just used the time while being away from the campaign to get a dose of reality. I'm sure that being in a campaign, surrounded by sycophants telling you 24/7 that you're doing great, you lose sight of the real world.

Rick Santorum appeared to be a likeable enough person, too bad he has let his extremists views take over his ability to think and speak coherantly. That is what has infected the GOP, the extremists make up maybe 25% of the GOP as a whole, yet because they are so loud and boisterous, everyone bows to their wishes. Maybe the GOP establishment really is hoping for a landslide loss, so they can ignore the nutcases in 2016.

People, it's about time some of you stopped spouting nonsense about polygamy (which is grounds for excommunication in the L.D.S. church and has been for over a century) and started looking at the issues.

As for our Evangelical friends: Why would you think a Mormon would be any less protective of your rights than you would be or any less Christian than you? Do you know the history of oppression early members of the L.D.S. church suffered? If anything, we're more sensitive to the right to practice our religion than most. We're intensely committed to freedom to worship, if for no other reason than because we're still not considered mainstream in some respects so we're still afraid that others will trample on our rights. We have doctrinal differences, but we look to the same Savior and Redeemer you do and he and his ransom of us from death and sin are the center of our religion. Don't make arbitrary divisions among us where we should all be working together.

Dirp - I thought to check the Santorum site. You are correct, it was not his daughter. Without Texas becoming a total Winner Take All state, there was no longer a path to get the 1144 needed delegates. I'm certain he saw his numbers slip a little bit in the polls too. The guy is a class act, he has never said he lost because another conservative was splitting the vote, but the reality is If Gingrich quits when his numbers were dropping, he wins Michigan, Ohio and a couple of other state Romney won by less than the margin of the Gingrich vote.

At this point he is young enough to fight another day, and this time he will have a support base in place, just like Romney did this year.

Didi.....Please stop blaming someone else for you not doing right. Abortion and same sex marriage are not republican issues, they are christian issues. Any Preacher (who is God called) SHOULD speak against these things and call them what the Bible says they are...Sin! If you changed churches to hear a more watered down, politically correct biblical message, then you should check your experience to see which god you actually believe in. The people Jesus would be appalled at are yourself and others who have sold their soul out to the idea of separation of Church and state in the light the liberals and others have painted it.

I am sorry to hear this. Santorum is a fine good man. He loves God and he loves his country. He has more experience to be President than Prez B.O. did when he charmed his way into office. Obama's background is a community organizer, a race baiter and instigator. He hung around with radicals and his 'loving' preacher Jerimiah Wright was a radical too. He loves unions that are nothing more than fronts for communism and want the destruction of America. Obama said he was going to 'spread the wealth', just like Castro did before he took over Cuba. Obama said he was going to 'fundamentally change America' and considering his background the model for this change is based on his 'experience'. Wake up folks you are being duped. These are the facts!

Speaking as someone who was raised in the Mormon church I can tell you that Mormons claim to be Christians but they do not recognize ANY other Christian religion to be legitimate.

Mormons are elitist unless they are trying to get money from you. If their membership (and money) drops, suddenly it is okay for less than perfect people (in their eyes) to join (like black people). If more people fall away, they will get desperate and start allowing gay people to join. Mormons are like Romney in that they will flip flop whenever necessary in order to stay on top.

In the Mormon church, whoever has the most money or has a big Mormon name like Young, Smith or Romney holds the high positions in the church (bishops, etc). Everyone else is just a schmuck. However, Romney must have created quite a flap when he came out in favor of abortion. This is a real problem for the Mormon church. Anyone else would have been excommunicated for that. However, Romney gives the church six million a year so they let him slide.

Mormons almost habitually sugar coat everything. They have to because that Joseph Smith story is so hokey. They will never live down the polygamy thing because the churches founder, Joseph Smith started it. There is no sugar coating THAT. It will never go away.

I couldn't wait to leave home and the Mormon church. The rest of my family subsequently fell away also. There are some very nice people in the church. Our bishop was a Romney and I must admit that they were very nice people but that doesn't mean I would want one in the White House. I don't want a president who lives in a dream world.

The people Jesus would be appalled at are yourself and others who have sold their soul out to the idea of separation of Church and state in the light the liberals and others have painted it.

Do you realize how those words would insult someone of another faith, like a Muslim, a Jew (Jesus was a Jew, not a Christian), or a Buddhist?

Do you think you are better than those of other faiths? Do you believe you are more deserving of human rights because you profess a particular faith?

Our founding fathers had the foresight to understand that we of many faiths can only co-exist in peace if our government does not favor any particular religious practice over others.

This god you believe in created us all and loves us all, right? Who are you to say you are better than another person, and to say Jesus would approve of your arrogance and intolerance?

Kaybee - Jesus said this "don't think I came to the earth to bring peace, but rather a sword." The earth is not heaven, it is not hell. It is the proving grounds as to whether you will hear his voice and obey or go you own way (i.e. be a god or law to yourself).

Satan said this "I will assend into heaven and establish my throne above God's. It didn't work out to good for him, why would you think that would be okay for you too?

Unless you have had a special needs child you really can't say that his decision had nothing to do with her and her present problems of going in and out of the hospital. Actually if she was normal and became very ill you couldn't make that statement either.

What one can be sure of is that many factors led to his decision to bow out and more than likely his daughter was one of those reasons to stop. It actually may have been the one deciding factor in the end. I have met and spoken on a few occasion with Santorum, and I can tell you the one thing that means more to him then anything else in this world is his family. They are his life, the politics is just a job.

They have 24 hr around the clock nursing care for her, so for her to be in the hospital back to back like this its not a real good sign. And if you have a Special Needs child you would know that any changes in routine can affect them more than any other child. Just maybe, like many families, regardless of the career path they chose, their family and their children are far more important than anything they are doing at the time.

Either way, one is just foolishly guessing unless they are there and its quite presumptuous to assume you know what anyone is thinking especially if you were not in the room.

More like EPIC FAIL,...but I want to save face, so I'll hide behind my daughter before taking the schooldyard option to "retire as the UNDEFEATED CHAMPION".

What an obvious transparent, self-serving tactic !

Santorum would have crashed and burned AGAIN in Pennsylvania, and he and everyone around him knows this.

marinmomSpeaking as someone who was raised in the Mormon church I can tell you that Mormons claim to be Christians but they do not recognize ANY other Christian religion to be legitimate.

News flash, there isn't a religion on this earth that thinks any religion other than their own is legitimate. If they thought they were legitimate we wouldn't have so many religions..... Religions are established based on their interpretation of the Bible. The Mormon Church just happens to interpret it different from say Lutherans. And the Lutherans interpret it different from the Catholic. Catholics interpret it different from Baptist and so on and so on.

It is ludicrous to make this election about an individuals religious beliefs. I personnally don't give a hoot about what religion a person belongs to and think the debate for why they shouldn't be elected now is as stupid as it was when J F Kennedy ran for office. Your post sounds as backward as those individual's statements and news articles when Kennedy was running. "God forbid if we put a Catholic in the White House!"

You clearly didn't read what I wrote much like a few others on this site. I said Santorum's decision to run for president didn't hinge on his daughter's health. That means that he put his hat in the ring 100% - which is what we want of our presidential candidates. But just like the decision to run wasn't about Bella, neither was his decision to suspend.

I never disparaged Bella nor the Santorum family for their personal decisions...whatever they are. But let's just be clear - if Santorum couldn't continue his campaign due to his daughter's illness, he might've suspended a couple of months ago when she had double pneumonia. His decision today was purely political.

Fear not...he'll be back in four years because that's how the GOP selects their candidates!

          "We are not done fighting."

So what is Santorum fighting for? Last I heard, he wanted to eliminate the separation of the Church and the State, and he recommended that parents not send any of their children to college or to get a public education.

How 12th-Century of him and his followers.

And as for Ron Paul now being the only alternative to Romney? If you don't believe that a unifying Federal government has a right to exist, and you leans towards anarchism and isolationism, then yes, vote for Ron Paul.

If you're a Mormon trying find common ground between metrosexual conservatives and the Tea Party, then yes, vote for Romney,

As for me, I'm not that politically naive to believe in strict constitutionalism, nor in devaluing women or American minorities, nor am I a believer in deregulation anarchy, nor do I see any value in making the Christian religion the law of the land, nor am I a fan of flip-flopping conservatives, nor do I see any worth for dismantling public education that serves as one of the critical foundations for any type of democracy, nor do I believe in dismantling social safety nets, that by doing so, widens the gap between the Haves and the Have-Nots. or eliminating agencies that protect the environment, nor do I see any worth for eliminating public health care ...therefore, a vote for either Paul or Romney are out of the question.

          Well done Ursula.

The real reason Rick Suspended is because without Texas becoming a Winner Take All state, there was no clear path to Nomination. That state says a mouthfull.

Santorum did not want to see a convention brawl

He did not endorse any of the three - with the way the three remaining candidates have treated each other and him, I couldn't blame him for biting his lip right now.

Santorum was reaching out to Newt to join him as less popular candidates do to strengthen the stronger candidates, Newt was really generous to offer Santorum the VP slot in a consolodation.

Newt is not presidential Material. And because of his poor judgement, the conservatives have to settle for another luke-warm conservative. Newt is bad enough, but the real blame goes to Conservatives who blindly supported him far longer than they should have. When Newt's numbers began to faid and Santorum passed him by, instead of digging the trenches deeper, they should have consolidated behind Santorum. As in 1976, they are about to nominate the wrong man. The only difference is, they guy in office is probably worse, somehow.

Within the next couple of weeks, conservatives frustration will curb and the party will shift into it's fall back position long warned of. Anybody, But Obama!

Santorum should have already known that his little angel was sick and getting sicker. Putting her through months of his campaign stops, with or without him could have been detrimental to her fragile health. Just missing her Daddy, is enough stress, yet alone having him frequent to every school and restaurant in the states he already ran in.

She needs him more than ever. We don't.

Just remember though, that there's many out that have your family's predicament, and no job, health insurance, or money.

A excuse in order to save face and allow a future senate run maybe? No politician would use his family as a excuse would they? Romney was the nominee for some time now. In order to win the general election he'll have to move to the center. That move may not help him if the liberatrians and their allies the Tea party folks vote for the libertarian candidate. The religiious right may not support him either. The GOP has p!ssed off too many voters with the righty rhetoric. That said, I do not believe he was a viable candidate; too right wing. The leaders of the nations that comprise this world are quite diverse in race, gender, political leanings, education, religious beliefs, etc. Just because we (U.S.) are the most powerful nation in the world does not mean we get to stomp on the rights of others or bully our way through situations that occur. I would have thought everyone in the U.S. would have learned that lesson when Dubya was POTUS. It takes a moderate centrist (from either party) to work with world leaders. When we elect a person who is difficult for the world leaders to deal with, they just sit back and wait. They know full well the longest they have to wait is 8 years. And if you think they don't donate heavily to the candidate they prefer and/or the most probable winner of the presidential election, you are either naive or sadly mistaken.

I'm actually saddened to see him bowing out. Sanatorium had clear positions about his beliefs, and I actually admire that in a politician. People who issue personal attacks at his positions or character generally need to start thinking for themselves and stop being dangling puppets on strings in the hands of liberal puppet masters. Larry Flynt was a lying rationalist when he said there were no studies that showed pornography harmed anyone.

Our study documented each issue of Hustler averaging 14.1 children and pseudo-children alongside 47 images of crime and violence; 52 percent of child photos were sexually explicit and most cartooned children were sexually violated. --- Judith Riesman.

It amazes Flynt had nerve enough to tell anyone, anything. My only hope is that Mitt Romney is worthy of the office of the President of the United States, and has the courage to stand up for many traditional American values rather than capitulate to unsubstantiated liberal redefinitions of those values.

I would rather have the smart guy (Pres. Obama) than the flip-flopper (Romney). I don't agree w/everything Pres. Obama stands for, but further tax breaks for the rich are really silly. GOP keeps citing former Pres. Reagan as if he'll rise from the dead, but the real truth is when Reagan reduced taxes this country was much younger.

We are basically at zero population growth and those who obtained their wealth through owning a business are retiring now. Every year more and more boomers retire. Unlike during Reagan's time, boomers are NOT going to start small businesses, hire more employees or invest in new technology. They will deposit any further wealth they can accumulate into their estates and give the money to their kids or favorite charity. These functions do not create jobs or increase the tax base.

Please people, wake up and think this through. If you do not have the wealth of a Kennedy, Rockefeller, Gates, Buffett, etc., then you cannot afford to vote for the GOP. Life is not free and like it or not, taxes pay for the freedom we enjoy, roads, emergency services, schools, etc. We share the burden of community and national expenses through taxes: real estate taxes, federal/state/local income taxes and state/local sales taxes. That's part of the deal, whether you rent your residence or own it. If that arrangement is so unsatisfactory to you, feel free to move to any other country of your choice.

Common decency requires that those who have more, do more. Why do you think we are the first ones to rush into whatever natural disaster occurs? Because we are one of the richest nations in the world and because we have people who are specially trained to handle those situations. It's a moral issue, not a political one. Someone has to step up and be in-charge. We, as a nation, have chosen to take that role. Before you say, we should not help anyone because it costs us money, may I remind you of one thing: Karma is a (you know what).

                        Clark:

Would you really prefer to have Sen. McCain and Palin in the White House? Really? Of course Palin would probably have quit by now (too much work for too little pay). The GOP gave the nomination to Sen. McCain knowing full well he would not run well against then-Sen. Obama. Pres. Obama is the smart guy in the room; you might have noticed a few of his accomplishments: Osama Bin Laden be dead, Navy Seals used to rescue innocents and kill pirates; although still in transition, the Middle East is rapidly moving toward democracy; oh, and who could forget - our economy, stock market and monetary systems have all been stabilized.

Personally, I think he is the best person for the job. No matter how much hatred or disrespect the GOP flings in his direction, he and the First Lady keep moving forward and don't waste time on providing media sound bites in response. That's what the GOP really hates, Pres. Obama is not only the smartest one in the room, his conduct IS Presidential.

the old estimated price of obama care=$940 billion

the new estimated price= $1.76 trillion(if you could drive a car that could drive that far you could circle the solar system about 10 times) probably costs more

marinmom - Reagan got the tax cut because the democrats feared reprisals from a public that gave him an unexpected huge victory over them that included going from a super majority to a smaller majority in the House and to losing control of the Senate to the Republicans.

But the democrats have sharp political smarts. They may have given in on the tax cuts and military increases, but they renigged on the spending cuts. All they had to do was wait a year for the deficits to mount. When they did they crammed 8 tax increases down his throat. Reagan did ask for closing loopholes in exchange for a lower tax rate, but one tax increase he did ask for was for social security. The issue of the day was that Social Security was going to be insolvent in the future. Funny how we got back to that agian, isn't it?

Reagan did I lived through it all. I paid attention.

Trisomy 18 is a chromosomal defect, it sounds like a perfect candidate for gene therapy If that is the case, I pray she lives long enough for such to occur. I sincerely wish we had a national mandate, much like landing a man on the moon, for solving the riddle of cancer and genetic disorders. Make no mistake - we could do it. It is merely a matter of will. If all we care about is lower taxes- forget it - the afflicted will all die. No private enterprise has the resources for such an endeavor. Sorry, but I'm pissed - enjoy your vacation cottage on the coast while a little girl dies in horrible agony. How can you justify yourself - keep up or die?

The medical community has no interest in curing cancer. Cancer is a multi-BILLION dollar industry for big Pharma. I like your idea of a mandate to curing cancer. We could do it, and I believe there are already cures out there.

If we had a Pharma industry that actually existed to help and cure us rather than to keep us addicted, it would go a long way to fixing our financial problems facing our country. It would lower the cost of insurance, medical bills, lower bankruptcy rates, medicare/medicaid.

Very good case for stem-cell research.

I must have missed the part of the article that says he's dropping out of the race because his daughter is sick. It's not that libtards don't care about a sick child, his child has nothing to do with it. I don't believe for a second he's dropping out because of his daughter's illness. I believe he's dropping out because he finally relaized he doesn't have a snowball's chance in h e l l of winning Pennsylvania or the nomination.

while protecting myself from children that I would need help raising because I am not financially stable to raise a child... however... I don't think I could ever terminate a pregnancy...

So, old bobbo, old pal... a working woman, obtaining a masters degree, who is pro choice but probably not pro choice for herself, not reliant on the government...

Rose... apparently you didn't read my comment to my buddy Bob.

I protect myself because I can't afford to have a child (heaven forbid need government assistance). I also said I am pro choice, but don't think I could ever go through with that decision FOR myself which is why *gasp* I protect myself like a responsible adult.

Santorum disapproves of all birth control. But... how do we protect ourselves from accidentally becoming pregnant... abstinance? The rythym method? That would result in more children that *gasp* the government needs to raise becuase *gasp* oooooooooooooh noooooooooooo abortion is so so so bad.

I also believe (could be wrong on this one) that Santorum was the one that claimed women claim rape to receive abortions.

                                    There's your idiot right there.

Rosefreak is spot on. If you have ever seen a woman bleed out and DIE from a back alley coat-hangar abortion, you would NEVER, EVER support the GOP. Women's bodies belong to them; not to you, the government, name your religion, etc.

My friend got PG as a teen, but she did not deserve to die because of it. Before you get all high and mighty about putting the kid up for adoption - WHY SHOULD SHE? Her body, her decision. Worst irony? Roe vs. Wade became law ONE YEAR LATER.

Almost forgot, her pregnancy was the result of being raped. Feel better now?

                                    Shocked and Disgusted:

I think we interpreted Rosefreak's post differently. Rosefreak is making the point that the GOP is anti-abortion and basically wants to control reproduction. Her point is the great relief she felt (albeit graphically) that Mr. Santorum is out of the POTUS race because of his extreme views on conception, abortion, etc.

I believe that we need to move forward as a nation, not backward. To suggest that we outlaw abortion is insane. First of all, those back alley abortion clinics that killed so many women until Roe vs. Wade became law would be back in business in about 5 minutes; and the GOP knows that. The real truth is they see it as a private business opportunity.

No one can legislate morality or tell another person to what extent (fill in the blank) conduct is or is not moral. Men are free to conduct themselves as they please. The ones who get "caught" are women. Women carry babies to birth, and so often raise said child alone. Generally speaking, abortion is most used by those who are in a lower socio-economic position. If the woman does not want the child for whatever her reason is, why should she be forced to carry it? If people are worried about all the childless couples just waiting to adopt, then let them enter into a business deal with a woman willing to gestate a child for them. Do not use morality to punish a poor woman so that a rich one can have a "free kid".

And however graphic Rosefreak's post was, that is what she was really saying.

Hey Rose-ever adopt or contribute in any way to any of these kids that the anti-choice gestapo want to force women to have? Maybe all of you "pro-lifers" should care a bit more about the kid after he/she is born than getting your drawers in a bunch about a woman's RIGHT to choose what she does with her body. Slick Rick tried pushing the anti choice crap too far in regards to birth control and pre- natal tests. Guess what? NOT all women want to be breed mares! Look where it got him-OUT of the race:-)

the minute they outlaw abortions in this country, there will be an immediate increase in the number of people travelling to Canada and Mexico to have this safe, effective and PERSONAL MEDICAL DECISION.

I don't know when a sperm and an egg become a person, I just know its not my decision and certainly not the government's to decide what any woman will do with her own body.

Amazing thing the Republican party which claims to want a smaller government, apparently want to shrink it small enough to fit it inside any woman's vaginal canal.

This type of rhetoric, to me, does not indicate that rose has any respect for a woman's right to choose and that she is dumb enough to think that Romney can wave a magic wand and abortions will disappear forever. Rose comes across as a typical evangelical sociopath common among the teabaggers of the GOP.

We will have to agree to disagree on the interpretation

I certainly hope his daughter will recover from her ailment.

Not likely. Gingrich only stayed in as long as he did to help Romney, and to stay in the VP race. He's my odds-on for VP. Could be someone else from a southern state or a TEA Party favorite, but Santorum doesn't bring the Romney campaign a whole lot. Mitt may be able to take MI from Obama, which would negate the need for PA. Rep. Ryan might energize the base more, which Mitt needs, but I don't see the establishment supporting that pick. Rubio could still be the guy, unless you believe his rejections. In any event, Romney won't let us know until August. He still has to lock up the delegates and then decide what his pick needs to bring.

As a Christian myself, I don't understand your comment at all. One does not need to be a Christian to understand that family comes first. Comments like that causes people who are not of the Christian faith to think that those of the Christian faith are all judgmental and self-righteous.

I hope that is sarcasm... As a Christian, you should detest anyone that doesn't "love thy neighbor"... as your Jesus supposedly said "let he who is without sin cast the first stone"... that guy throws a ton of stones for someone proclaiming themselves a "Christian"...

As a non-Christian, I find the insinuation that family wouldn't come first for me incredibly insulting. I have a deep understanding of the bible (that's why I'm not a Christian) and the behaviors I see from those who have the loudest voices in Christianity are an embarrassing representation of humanity. Especially "Evangelicals." They like to point fingers (something Jesus preached against) at the behavior of others, but expect everyone to ignore theirs. For instance; They tell us the homosexuality is a sin (which the bible never actually says. The word that was translated as "abomination" was incorrectly translated. The original wording was more like "a deviation from the norm") and that homosexuals, who comprise about 4-5% of the population, threaten the sanctity of marriage, while Evangelical "Christians" have the highest divorce rate of any demographic in the nation. The entire chapter of Mark 10 is devoted to Jesus denouncing divorce as adultery. Family comes first right? Well then why do so many more "Christian" families fall apart than others?

As for him being a graduate of Harvard School of Law, don't you think if that were a lie, the officials at Harvard would have said something by now? You don't get to be editor of the Harvard Law Review unless you're actually a law student there. Nancy, you don't want proof of anything, you've ignored it this whole time and it's been there for you to see if only you'd just look.

Yes, Nancy, you are so totally correct! It is a conspiracy that goes back before President Obama was even born. You've cracked the case! The State of Hawaii has been in cahoots with Harvard well before the little bundle of joy was born and then smuggled into the U.S. He was the Chosen One as they had for-seen that one day he would be President of the greatest nation in the world. It took many people and alot of hush money to make this all come together, but they couldn't get it past you, could they Nancy? I am in awe! Sweetie, you have got to stop listening to that channel that rhymes with pox and maybe a little less of Lush Scumbaugh.

The only "proof" published is obviously FAKE. If you look at what the real birth certificate looked like at the time of birth, you'd see the obvious differences. Do you listen to everything without question?

Besides he already said that he was physically born in another country, what else do you need?

I assume you're a well trained document authenticator with years of experience in detecting fakes, correct? Could you also tell us exactly when President Obama said he was born in another country? I imagine it will be quite difficult because it never happened, unless, of course you're referring to the joke he made at the 2010 Correspondents Dinner. Also, can you please explain by what method the president traveled back in time to put his own birth announcement in a Hawaiian newspaper?

Your turn genius,I know you can keep it brief but I'm ready because i will bet you dont even know if there is a plan

uaw, how does Obama plan to reduce the use of imported oil when he blocks plans for American pipelines? How does he support small business when he favors more regulations that strangle them? How does he plan to reduce the budget by 4 trillion without cutting into the welfare state that makes up almost 2/3 the budget? If he intended to "raise taxes on the 1%" why didnt he when dems had control of the congress? Why hasnt he gotten us out of the wars in his first 4 years? (Aside from the obvious which is that he understood the reasons to stay better than his supports did) The plan you propose sounds great because it isnt what Obama's plan is, its just a bunch of buzzwords you may have took from his youtube videos

                                                Republican Plan:

Cut back on both welfare state and defense spending, basically cuts across the board (Ryan Budget) so we can start addressing the debt instead of increasing it as Obama did

Lower taxes across the board, including the poor and middle class as well as the wealthy so that our consumers have more money to spend on products. Thus stimulating the economy into natural growth and recovery

Reduce dependence on foreign oil by utilizing our domestic resources safely and responsibly

truely support small businesses by making it easier for them to start, grow, and compete with larger companies

                                                etc.

Obama has his words, but actions and his record speak louder than that, we need real change in 2012, change that we dont just believe in, but that actually happens

we have enough oil produced in the U.S to sustain our needs the current oil supply is so large that it is sitting waiting to be used.We have high oil prices because the free market is driving up the price.I believe in free market but somethings that affect the nation like oil prices maybe should be nationalized

Newt, Ron - no shame in admitting defeat. If your party has any chance whatsoever, you'd be wise to follow Rick's lead. Still, I don't feel Romney is the answer America is looking for. Despite the "anybody but Obama" mentality so many have embraced, Romney is too out of touch with his own base.

Looks to me like November is shaping up to be another landslide.

You should just remember that when the Republican primaries started it was, "Anyone But Romney". They didn't start the whole ABO thing until after that.

Romney started as the dark horse candidate that the Republicans didn't want. Now they are stuck with him because they couldn't come up with anyone that wasn't crazier or scarier to run instead.

Jim - are you suggesting Romney is in touch with mainstream U.S.A.?? Or are you simply skewing toward him because of the letter behind his name?

And would you be referring to the tidal-wave the Tea Party rode in on in 2010? The one in which McConnell declared his lone goal was to ensure that Obama was a one-term president? I suppose that's what you're talking about when you discuss being "in touch" with mainstream U.S.A. I'll tell you what, go ask Palin, Bachman, and now Santorum how that Tea Party wave is working out for them. Huntsman was the only candidate who brought anything legitimate to the table and his party shunned him because he pledged to work across party-lines and put his country over his party. Who does that??!!

Still, say what you want and I will respect your opinion. But if you think Romney has a snowball's chance in Hell, I'm just going to politely agree to disagree.

jim, 'main stream' America didn't think President Obama was moving fast enough to recover in 3 years what it took 8 years before that to demolish. It's kinda like standing in front of a new microwave oven after using an old stove for years and yelling 'HURRY UP!,' and being discouraged because it is still taking longer than they thought. The GOP want to take America back to...what or where exactly? After 8 years with Bush you all suddenly get angry now? You didn't get angry when the Supreme Court stopped a legal recount of votes and appointed Bush President. You didn't get angry when we illegally invaded a country that didn't pose a threat to us. You didn't get angry when we spent millions and thousands of lives on that said war. You didn't get angry when over $10 billion in cash just disappeared in Iraq. You didn't get angry when Bush embraced trade and outsourcing policies that shipped 6 million jobs out of the U.S. You didn't get angry when Bush didn't get Bin Laden. You didn't get angry when Bush rang up $10 trillion in combined budget and account deficits. You didn't get angry when you heard about the horrible conditions at Walter Reed Hospital. You didn't get angry Bush gave over a trillion in tax breaks to the 1%ers. You didn't get angry over the 8 years of the worst job creations in several decades. You didn't get angry when over 200,000 Americans lost their lives because they had no health insurance. But then you got angry and said 'hell no!' when President Obama decided that in America people deserved the right to see a doc if they are sick? And to think that your mindset and that of the GOP is that; illegal wars, lies, corruption, torture, job losses by the millions, stealing your tax $'s to make the rich richer, and the worst economical disaster since 1929 are all okay with you, but helping fellow Americans isn't. My, how 'Christian' that is...

Okay, so when the general election rolls around there won't be a "conservative" candidate. Just ol' etcha sketch, stand on every side of every issue, "I love to fire people" and "I'm not concerned about the poor," let the American car companies fail," stash yo cash outta the country, "I pay 14% in taxes," Romney. Looks like he's cast from the same mold as ol' Dubya! Say one thing, do another.

Wade - I'm a realist. Palin is the Tea Party's pinup doll and they want nothing to do with Romney - he's too moderate. (for now) I think your comparison of the two is off; Romney strikes me as more like President Obama with a different letter behind his name. He's a puppet who will say anything to get votes, make a buck, or push party influence. And there's no way in hell I'll support someone who doesn't feel he or anyone should pay their fair share of taxes. (capital gains)

Perhaps I am a pessimist when it comes to November though. As I see it, once again, we're stuck with voting for the lesser of the two evils. And, frankly, it's getting a little old. Alas - despite my "pessimism," I still stand by my original post that I feel November is not going to be pretty for the GOP. It remains to be seen if that's a good thing or not. I have my doubts.
...damn, maybe I am a pessimist. :) But, in today's political climate, can you blame me?

I think that a President and a Congress working together with business and industry can even surpass the Bush years of both economic and moral disasters. Great leaders always inherit what has gone before and do their part. As an independent, I am waiting to see the solutions proposed by President Obama or Governor Romney that offer working together in many sectors.

me too Rick, a real leader always takes responsibility sometime even if it isnt directly his fault. Obama constantly blaming bush shows his lack of leadership skills, that being said Romney has no record as president and has to prove he would be an improvement. Personally since i dont like Obama's record right now i am inclined to vote for Romney, but the debates are where Romney has to prove he would be a better alternative and if he doesnt then i could be persuaded to vote for Obama, but if the election were held today, i would take Romney over Obama

Who told you the president didn't take responsibility for his actions? Show me a clip where the president blamed Bush for an action he has done.

Which particular record are you not fond of?

                                                    http://obamaachievements.org/list

Obama was a 99%er that earned his 1% status.

Romney was born with a silver foot in his mouth.

Romney wants more tax breaks for the rich (Ryan Plan). He also wants to give you a coupon for your healthcare in old age. Do you think the coupon will increase in value as healthcare costs rise? NOT

Vote for what benefits you personally. But I'm voting Obama. Today, my kids are back on the healthcare insurance. My dad's medicine is covered with the removal of the loophole. My brother is back on the assembly line for GM. My portfolio is looking better than it ever has.

I'd like to keep the Bush era policies where they belong...

                                                    in the past.

Me thinks we are screwed......UNLESS Santorum surrenders his votes to either Gingrich or Paul. That should make for an intresting turn of events for Romney. I hate the guy-he seems like the spawn of Satan with his full coffers of money and evil smile. No one like him should be in office. I have a feeling that Santorum is not going to surrender his votes to Romney-which wold guarintee the election. Romney's hurt his and many other canidates chances by corperate back lashing and tough brutal ad campaigns by the millions that he has.

The time is now to get rid of this Bane Capitol Croney!

Well so much for hoping for a brokered convention.

I've suspected for awhile that Romney would be the one, but it is just so hard to accept.

Oh well, time to vote for Obama.

The Republicans have left me no other choice.

The convention could be boring again like in 2008. VP selection will be HUGE again. But then again, Biden is not hard to beat.

Looks like our Presidential choices will be between an actual successful person in Romney and an artificially created "successful" person in Obama. It's like apples and oranges.

Realhope, his child was ill before he decided to run for president, and yet he unexplicably is against universal healthcare even though there are families that walk in his shoes without half the insurance he was blessed to have. So no, "not caring (which no one has claimed to have done)" for his child is not synonymous with being thrilled he's out of the election. And somehow, if it was one of the Obama children, I bet you would care less.

As for the end of his campaign, I'm only slightly less frightened about this election now.

My heart goes out to little Bella. May the time she has left be filled with sunshine and balloons! What her father is or does or believes is no reflection on that little girl. I will only say that I hope that as her father he will now spend what precious time he has left with her, as being her father. Rick it is time to throw in the towel and be there full time for your little girl.

If "universal healthcare" were the law of the land when Mrs. Santorum went in for her 20 weeks OB visit, Bella would have never been born. The government would have ordered an abortion because that procedure is far, far cheaper than all the treatments she has undergone since birth. You are correct that hating the father is not the same as hating the child, but do not wish your hating-the-sick government health-destruction policies on this poor defenseless child either. She deserved what little time she will have just as much as anyone old enough to read this post, thank God she was given to a family that understands that.

Paul, that's funny (strange) that you say the Obama Administration would force anything concerning abortion, since it is what the GOP leaders in a lot of Republican controlled States have been doing by cutting off federal funds to PP for women's health issues that are not even related to abortion (is is NOT Federally funded), or the constant legislations to put down women's health issues completely, or by ORDERING invasive vaginal exams that women have to pay own their own? You mean THAT kind of government? Good luck convincing 51% of the voting block of that BS, Paul.

To be honest, the life of a child with T-18 is short and full of agony, termination, while an incredibly tough choice for anyone to make, is usually an act of mercy for that potential child.

                                                      Fantomdog,

Are you going to try to convince 51% of the electorate that if I put $100 in your checking account and you write a check to PP that none of the $100 was a part of the funds that paid the check? You can't separate federal income taxes that way. If you pay a penny to Uncle Sam in income taxes, then some of your taxes pay for PP. Since PP takes federal grants, some federal funds pay for abortions. Period, end of story! And have you looked at PP's expenditures, check what percent go to pay for abortions and what percent go for everything else and come back and tell me that they are primarily concerned with women's "health."

I never said the Obama Administration was going to force abortions on anyone, I said IF we had a "universal healthcare system" the National Health Administration Board would decide how to determine what course of action your doctor should take given the long term costs of the possible choices. It might not happen in the next five to ten years, but it would eventually turn out the way I described because it is the most cost effective course to take. It wouldn't even start out as forced. At first your doctor would make the case that the child would only ever experience suffering and for the sake of mercy the mother should make the choice to abort. Eventually though, the "universal health coverage" administrator would tell you that you can pay on your own to have the defective child (which you would then have to pay on your own to care for), or that they would pay to terminate. That may not be "forced," but I doubt many families would be able to make their own choice in that situation. If you doubt this, do some research, the NHAB was going to recommend no mamograms for women under age 50, because they were too expensive. They've already set limits on men's access to prostate exams for those on federal programs. Too bad for men that they die "with prostate cancer and not from it."

                                                        Sherobes-1,

Universal Healthcare under the law passed in 2009 is a lie. Since it passed, the number of uninsured in America has gone from 30 million to 50 million.

The problem is, it doesn't make financial sense for a 20 something to pay $15,000 in premiums (or for the government to pay that amount on his/her behalf) when they MIGHT go to the doctor once a year which would cost them the astounding amount of $250 to $500. A private high deductible plan to cover a catastrophic illness (more likely accident) is what they should have. But under "universal" health coverage, everyone gets the same plain vanilla coverage, so teens and young adults end up way over covered, and the elderly will end up with rationing since to cover them fully the cost would (already has) bankrupt even the federal government. It is far more honest to tell people to save for their own healthcare needs for when they need it because there won't be anyone there to pay for them when they are old (which at the current rate will be the case anyway) than to buy votes by telling young people the government will take care of them when they get old, so don't worry about it now.

By the way, where in the Constitution does it say that the government shall pay for the health care of the people? I've read it several times and still haven't been able to find that clause.

                                                        Fantomdog,

The "ordering of invasive vaginal exams" is a lie. If you are referring to the songram law passed in Texas last year, that law never required that a specific type of sonogram be performed. What it said was that WHEN the doctor did a sonogram (and all responsible doctors who expect to perform an abortion do one) that the mother be shown the image and that the sound of the heart beat be made audible for her to hear at least 24 hours prior to the procedure (the abortion). Obviously the intent was to influence the mother into changing her mind, but not by "raping" her, but instead by attempting to convince her that the "cluster of cells" in her uterus was more than just a bunch of single celled organisms.

                                                          #24.15 - Tue Apr 10, 2012 7:14 PM EDT

                                                          Paul,

The government wouldn't be paying for the healthcare of all Americans. Under a single payer system, most of us would be paying for it ourselves via payroll deductions, exactly like most employers do today with group health insurance programs.

I think Fantomdog was referring to the Republican proposed law here in Virginia that would have required all women seeking abortions to undergo a trans-vaginal ultrasound that involves a probe being inserted into the vagina. Thank goodness we Virginians we able to get this forced rape bill dropped completely, but it's an outrage that it was ever proposed at all.

Here's something you need to come to terms with, Paul, abortion is legal! No person should be forced to do anything to against their will or made to feel guilty when seeking to perform a perfectly legal act.

And, further more, Paul from H-town: Abortion is LEGAL and to force a woman to look at an image and to be forced to hear anything coming from the sonogram is completely wrong and disgusting! That is pure evil and manipulation and to put a woman who is already dealing with a very hard decision is just cruel, but being a man you would never in a million years understand what that is like. Try paying attention, all across this nation there are conservatives trying to do whatever they can to get around the legal abortion law. And if that means invasive tactics they will do it, and what is worse is that they try to slip it in a bill that has nothing to do with abortion, and they try to do it very quietly without making any waves (kind of like Hitler imo)! And women will NOT stand for it and we will show that in November!

                                                          quote from paul:

If "universal healthcare" were the law of the land when Mrs. Santorum went in for her 20 weeks OB visit, Bella would have never been born. The government would have ordered an abortion because that procedure is far, far cheaper than all the treatments she has undergone since birth.

and another quote from paul just a few comments down:

I never said the Obama Administration was going to force abortions on anyone, I said IF we had a "universal healthcare system" the National Health Administration Board would decide how to determine what course of action your doctor should take given the long term costs of the possible choices

first, you are asserting that the health care reform is somehow "universal healthcare (another quote from you here):

Universal Healthcare under the law passed in 2009 is a lie.

call it a "lie" if you want. the fact remains that you are saying it exists.

second, you are falsifying your statements to say the government will run your healthcare. not true in the least. you are literally making @!$%# up and driving our country to another civil war. why? holy crap man, why?

Rick Santorum will be doing a great service to his party and to the country, as he had promised in his campaign that this is to defeat Obama, whoever is the nominee. Class act !!!
