Top Obama campaign donor accused of fraud

A major donor to President Barack Obama has been accused of defrauding a businessman and impersonating a bank official, creating new headaches for Obama's re-election campaign as it deals with the questionable history of another top supporter.

The New York donor, Abake Assongba, and her husband contributed more than $50,000 to Obama's re-election effort this year, federal records show. But Assongba is also fending off a civil court case in Florida, where she's accused of thieving more than $650,000 to help build a multimillion-dollar home in the state — a charge her husband denies.

President Obama speaks at a campaign fundraiser March, 30, 2012, in Burlington, Vt.

Obama is the only presidential contender this year who released his list of "bundlers," the financiers who raise campaign money by soliciting high-dollar contributions from friends and associates. But that disclosure has not come without snags; his campaign returned $200,000 last month to Carlos and Alberto Cardona, the brothers of a Mexican fugitive wanted on federal drug charges.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt declined comment to The Associated Press. He instead referred the AP to previous statements he made to The Washington Post, which first reported the allegations against Assongba in its Sunday editions. LaBolt told the paper 1.3 million Americans have donated to the campaign, and that it addresses issues with contributions promptly.

Assongba was listed on Obama's campaign website as one of its volunteer fundraisers — a much smaller group of about 440 people.

Assongba and her husband, Anthony J.W. DeRosa, run a charity called Abake's Foundation that distributes school supplies and food in Benin, Africa. A photo posted on Assongba's Facebook page shows the couple standing next to Obama at a May 2010 fundraiser.

In one Florida case, which is still ongoing, Swiss businessman Klaus-Werner Pusch accused Assongba in 2009 of engaging him in an email scam — then using the money to buy a multimillion-dollar home, the Post reported. The suit alleges Assongba impersonated a bank official to do it. Pusch referred the AP's questions to his attorney, who did not immediately return requests seeking comment Sunday.

Meanwhile, Assongba has left a trail of debts, with a former landlord demanding in court more than $10,000 in back rent and damages for a previous apartment. She was also evicted in 2004 after owing $5,000 in rent, records show.

In an interview with the AP on Sunday, DeRosa said the allegations against his wife were untrue, although he couldn't discuss specifics because of pending litigation. He said he and Assongba were "very perturbed" by the charges, and said the couple's charity does important work in Africa.

Assongba has given more than $70,000 to Democratic candidates in recent years, an AP review of Federal Election Commission data shows. Her larger contributions include $35,000 to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee between Obama and the Democratic Party, and $15,000 to Democrats running for Congress. DeRosa also gave $15,000 to Obama's victory fund in April 2011, records show.

Abake's Foundation is listed by the IRS as a registered nonprofit organization; its financial reports were unavailable. A representative who picked up the phone at the foundation's Benin office declined to answer questions, and instead referred the AP to Assongba.

Obama's campaign declined to comment on whether its vetting procedures were thorough enough, or whether Assongba's contribution would be refunded. All told, Obama has raised more than $120 million this election, not counting millions more from the Democratic Party — giving him a financial advantage thus far over any of his Republican challengers.

You are insane. Since the Republican and Tea Party loons arrived, we have lost way more than our freedom. Apparently, you are a big supporter of a Machiavellian plan to take over this country.

Wake up America, we have seen the enemy and it is the Teapublican Party.

The list of GOP donors couldn't stand the light of day. That's why we never see them.

This Assongba is just one person among the millions that have contributed to President Obama's re-election campaign.

And if there is a verifiable problem, it will get straightened out.

You can bet Obama will answer questions on this issue with it is a criminal matter and until all the facts are known he is not going to comment. Unlike the Trayvon Martin case. But his supporters will insinuate that the Republicans do it as well and therefore two wrongs make a right.

Anyway you spin this it stinks. There is simply too much money flowing to our elected officials to buy influence. To suggest for one minute they actually work for the American people is a joke, they work for the highest bidder. They only pretend to care about the American people come election time.

Well, his donation should be given back, but then he can then give it to a super-PAC. Super-PACs can have no connection or communication with the candidate or their campaign. As Romney said when asked about stopping the negative ads being run against Gingrich, any connection he might have with one of the super-PACs backing him is against federal law which is a serious offense and he could end up in the "big house" for violating that.

So the campaigns themselves are off limits to the un-pure, but the super-PACs are wide open and not held to any standards other than complete freedom of speech.

So, problem solved.

btw, this is also why Obama CANNOT return or refuse Bill Maher's or anyone else's donations that are made to the super-PAC without breaking federal law. You don't like those apples? Tell it to the Supreme Court.

Perhaps the Difference between the Republican and Democrat parties is that the Republicans dont come out and act like they are the saviours of the World. The Republican party doesn't hook people in with empty campaign rhetoric like "Were going to change the way Washington works", "End corruption in Washignton", "Have the most transparent government in History", "There will be no lobbyists in My administration", "Were not going to take PAC money", "The most honest and ethical Congress in History", "Hope and Change", "Change you can Believe in" etc.

If your going to act like your better than the other party, that your the Saints and the other party is the Devil, Then maybe you had better live up to it, otherwise you deserve every bit of sarcasm, ridicule, and mistrust you get when stories like this come out.

Now I suppose the word is out to Main Street America about 41 Obama White House staff, and some of their aides, along with HUNDREDS of Congressional Representatives and government employees have FAILED to pay their BACK IRS TAXES:

So, now "donors" are thinking they too can bypass laws and do anything they want.

Nah, it is not about just being a Democrat.....the FRAUD encompasses all party lines.

You are absolutely right about Obama's Chicago political origins but for some inexplicable reason, the windy city voters don't seem to care how a politician gets where he gets or what he does when he get there. They just re-elected someone who took a $7,000 bribe from an undercover officer! The list in Chicago is very long and affects both parties and this is the quagmire that Obama learned the ropes from!

BO stinks and his politics clearly reflect a political foundation born of Chicago's democratic party. In case anyone missed it, Chicago's corrupt politicians continue to distinguish themselves and now we have the dubious honor of being the only state in the union with 2 former governors currently serving time in prison - one of them for trying to sell BO's senate seat. Republican or Democrat...if they're in politics in Chicago you can bet on questionable ethics or a complete lack thereof, and Obama is not the exception to his rule.

Dudogger dont worry. You still have Harry Ried, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Eddie Bernice Johnston, Charles Rangle, etc.

Aren't you proud of the wonderful Job Nanny did "Draining the Swamp"?

Do you miss Robert Byrd? We know how much the Democrats love making History and whats more "Historical" than having the Longest serving representative in history being a Democrat and a known racist, former Exalted Cyclops and Kleagle?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Byrd

A member of the Democratic Party, Byrd served as a U.S. Representative from 1953 until 1959 and as a U.S. Senator from 1959 to 2010. He was the longest-serving senator and the longest-serving member in the history of the United States Congress.

...

In the early 1940s, Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to create a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.[9]

According to Byrd, a Klan official told him, "You have a talent for leadership, Bob ... The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation." Byrd later recalled, "suddenly lights flashed in my mind! Someone important had recognized my abilities! I was only 23 or 24 years old, and the thought of a political career had never really hit me. But strike me that night, it did."[9] Byrd held the titles Kleagle (recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops.[9] When it came time to elect the "Exalted Cyclops", the top officer in the local Klan unit, Byrd won unanimously.[9]

In 1944, Byrd wrote to segregationist Mississippi Senator Theodore G. Bilbo:[17]

I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.

— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944, [9][18]

In 1946 or 1947, Byrd wrote a letter to a Grand Wizard stating, "The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia and in every state in the nation."[19] However, when running for the United States House of Representatives in 1952, he announced "After about a year, I became disinterested, quit paying my dues, and dropped my membership in the organization. During the nine years that have followed, I have never been interested in the Klan." He said he had joined the Klan because he felt it offered excitement and was anti-communist.

That's right the Republicans totally sold out the American poeple with the Patriot act and when Obama was Campaigning he said he would get rid of the Patriot act then signed it again TWICE. But hey that wasn't enough he had to rob us of the right to due process with the NDAA and now with HR347 he has robbed us of the right to peaceful protest.

SO Obama is the reason the warantless wiretapping continues today add that to the NDAA that strips us of our right to due process and now HR347 that robs us of the right to protest on federal land or near anyone with SS protection and look at just how pathetic your argument is.

For all those on this string who are defending the President and his re-election campaign for accepting all this dirty money, I have but one question: How can you seriously defned this practice? Without blaming anyone else, with out using the "he did it first" defense of grade school, please let me know how you can defend this? All you, and the President, appear to be able to do is shout tired cliches and platitudes, saying that "Bush is evil" and "Cheney is evil" and "the republicans/tea Party do it too" with out justifying why they are engaged in such horrible practices.

So, I'll ask again, can you justify why you take money from shady characters, terrorists (the Ayers/Dohrn connection), racists (Rev Wright), major Wall St donors, misogynists entertainers (Maher), etc why decrying others for doing the same. And DO NOT use the "they do it too" defense.

Mr. Obama latest attempt for Illegal Immigrant AMNESTY is nothing short of "sabotaging "Federal Immigration Laws.

Mr. Obama has "discreetly" introduced "new procedures" allowing 1,000,000 Illegal Immigrants to
remain in the United States, bypassing any Congressional procedure or conforming to existing Federal
Immigration LAWS. This "new procedure" was supposed to be announced yesterday, but I suppose Mr. Obama is waiting for the "right opportunity" to release the information. Another "shadow government" procedure to garnish the "mainly" Latino vote during the Presidental election when Mr. Obama FAILED on his promise for "comprehensive Illegal Immigrant Reform (Amnesty)" during the LAST ELECTION. SICK.

The Obama administration is proposing to make it easier for illegal immigrants who are immediate family members of American citizens to apply for permanent residency, a move that could affect as many as 1 million of the estimated 11 million immigrants living here illegally.

The new rule, which the Department of Homeland Security will post for public comment Monday, would reduce the time illegal immigrants are separated from their American families while

seeking legal status, immigration officials said. Currently, such immigrants must leave the country to apply for a legal visa, often leading to long stints away as they await resolution of their applications.

The proposal is the latest move by the administration to use its executive powers to revise immigration procedures without changing the law. It reflects an effort by President Obama to improve his standing among those Latino voters who feel he has not met his 2008 campaign promise to pursue comprehensive immigration reform.

Obama has deported more people than Bush ever did, and he's done more on the border than anyone else has done.

Obama is increasing scrutiny on dangerous illegal immigrants, not some 80 year old lady who is experiencing a shortage of poligrip.

"The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency expects to deport about 400,000 people this fiscal year, nearly 10 percent above the Bush administration's 2008 total and 25 percent more than were deported in 2007. The pace of company audits has roughly quadrupled since President George W. Bush's final year in office."

LOL Eric! I bet you like magic shows too. All the deportations of Bush and Obama combined don't make a dent in the problem. It's all smoke and mirrors designed to fool the simple minded.

You will know when a President is serious about illegal aliens when he starts fining and jailing those who employ them. If that happens, no one will hire an illegal. There will be no incentive for them to come here and the ones here will self-deport because there is no reason to stay.

          crazy

Eric's comment was "Obama has deported more people than Bush ever did", the facts prove that is a lie. Even if you counted only Removals, even using voodoo math, 2,064,074 by the Bush administration is greater than 1,080,522 by the Obama administration.

Now here's the kicker, according to Mr Obama the statistics that his administration are reporting are misleading.

"[T]he statistics are actually a little deceptive because what we've been doing is…apprehending folks at the borders and sending them back. That is counted as a deportation, even though they may have only been held for a day or 48 hours."

In a nutshell, what was formally counted as a"Return" are now being counted as a "Removal" or Deportations. So to eliminate any "deception" or bias lets total "Returns" and "Removals" over the past 2 administrations.

Bush Administration Removal & Return Totals - 10,189,583

Obama Administration Removal & Return Totals - 1,996,550

Well, considering that under Obama's watch we have added as much in just over 3 years as was added under Bush in 8, AND Obama didn't have to deal with 9/11, AND the fact that the ONLY downgrade in our credit rating happened under Obama's watch, AND considering Obama's OWN statement that aising the debt limit ceiling shows a lack of leadership on the President's behalf, yeah, I can see Obama getting some serious blame.

Obama inherited an economy that his own party created when they took over congress two years earlier. They inherited 4.6% unemployment and totally trashed it in less than two years.

Liberal democrat fascists are the party of Hitler. Compare Obama's stadium speech to Hitler's. Compare democrat propaganda to the third Reich. Liberals are also more than willing to throw Jews under the bus. Hitler grew from the social democrat party. Liberals are closet fascists, they want to control what you eat, what you drink, what you drive, what you learn, where you live, etc.

Fascism requires a large overreaching government, total media control, and gun confiscation. Those are all liberal democrat goals. Conservatives are, by definition, anti fascist because they believe in a LIMITED central government, freedom of speech, and the 2nd amendment.

Democrats believe the people should work for the good of the state, republicans believe the state should work for the good of the people.

Gotta love Republicans. Bush threw the train off the tracks and they expect Obama to stop it in mid air.

Nice try. Obama had to pay for what Bush put into place, plus the interest.

You can't cut taxes and go to war twice, and then expect that all to reverse with the snap of your fingers.

If Romney had his way, there would have been no stimulus, no auto bail out. If you look at what economists say would have happened it would have been a depression with more people out of work.

George Soros says Obama must go

                22.11.2010

Last Tuesday, November 16 , Soros told financiers of the Democratic party that Obama must go. The liberal "Huffington Post" quoted Soros as saying:

"...if this president can't do what we need, it is time to start looking somewhere else."

Yes, Soros wants another puppet that he can use to control America with. The one he currently uses has a few broken strings and it keeps going on vacation. Also, his old puppet no longer captivates his audience like it did back in 2008.

Feb 1, 2012 (Bloomberg) -- George Soros, the billionaire investor who bankrolled Democratic groups during George W. Bush’s presidency and then indicated in 2010 that his giving days were over, is back.

He just isn’t giving to the political action committee working to re-elect President Barack Obama.

Soros is joined by million-dollar donors such as film producer Stephen Bing and auto insurer Peter Lewis in not contributing to Priorities USA, a group founded by former White House aides to help return Obama to the White House...

Big Tee---you really need to learn how things work. Supreme Court Justices are appointed. They are impartial judges. The GOP does NOT control the Senate, the Dems have the majority. If you think otherwise, then all the time that the libs spend crying about what Bush did with a GOP Congress is just a bunch of horse hockey, because the GOP never had a filibuster-proof majority, either. You can not have it both ways---saying that all the bad stuff happened while Bush was President, and that the Dems were powerless to stop it, then turning around and saying that they can't pass "good" legislation while in the majority because the mean old GOP blocks them. Or are you really just saying that the Dems are ineffective while in the minority, unable to block any "bad" legislation, and are also ineffective while in the majority, unable to pass any "good" legislation? Why would any rational person continue to vote for truly ineffective leaders?

Big T - Stop sounding so goofy. Since 1933 the Dem have controlled all of Congress 28 terms ( 56 years ) to the Republicans 7 terms ( 14 years ). Your argument makes absolutely no sense. But like a good Dem why let facts get in thy way.

mikewhatever: Bush had a Republican Senate and House until 2006. They ran the economy into the ground and now you people whine about government deficit spending that was necessary to save us from a crash.

Did the Democrats filibuster? Yes! Did they filibuster everything like today's Senate Republicans? No!

Soros added, "Romney would have to take Gingrich or Santorum as a vice president and you probably have some pretty extreme candidates for the Supreme Court."

Soros also told Reuters that many hedge fund managers in the United States are backing Romney because Obama wants to raise their taxes.

Nothing sticks. Someday, and I hope soon, Obama's shady past will come to light. Look at the people he has around him now and in previous yrs. Birds of a feather. He should not have been elected president. That is this country's biggest mistake ever. He can't run on his dismal record so he blames everyone else. He must go in 2012 and take his crooks and thugs with him. Good riddance.

Let's make sure he has all kinds of "flexibility" AFTER the election, just as he promised the Russians! Let's give him a permanent vacation! Should be flexible enough then!

Why should we pay any attention to this insignificant article when we have four years of public record on which to judge this president? We have everything we need to know what kind of leader he is.

He has presided over a vast expansion of the federal government, the erosion of constitutionally-protected individual rights, unnecessary and immoral wars, the debasement of our currency, and excessive spending that has added trillions to the national debt.

And we are supposed to care about the source of a $50.000 campaign contribution? Really?

Yawn. Politics has been funded with dirty money since the beginning of time. Both Rs and Ds get their share. I'll defend O here and say we cannot impute the alleged misconduct of his donors to him in this case. That being said, is there any better evidence for limited government than the constant exposition of cronyism and corruption from both sides of the aisle in the everyday functioning of the government? America, hopefully, appears to be embracing its libertarian heritage. The premise, as shown by all of these articles, is that politicians will abuse their power. Instead of choosing between the better of two people who will invariably abuse their power, the strategy needs to be to limit that power as much as possible. A lesson that, sadly, we should have learned long ago.

Well, that was the "hope and change" promise that so many are now realizing was simply empty rhetoric. Your sarcastic (but true in the minds of many O-voters) observation simply confirms my cited premise. Nobody will end the abuse of power, regardless of their promises, skin color, party affiliation, or any "I'm different, really" nonsense. We must limit their powers, because they all will exploit whatever powers we grant them. Period.

The Univ of Illinois has declared Chicago the most politically corrupt city in the US! Obama is the top politician. For anyone to expect anything but corruption from a Chicago politician is ludicrous. The NATO meeting in May should bring NATO troops to oust the Drug Gangs and the Corrupt Politicians. That would leave Chicago, Illinois, and the US without their current leader!

Good laugh, but true: "MSNBC had no time to sweep it under the rug".

Obama is from Chicago and it is one of the most corrupted cities in the U.S. What made ANYONE think that Obama was any different.

He is first and for most a politician. You don't get as far ahead as he did on the fast track without leaving dirt swept here and there under the rugs. We just had to wait for the right people to get in the trenches and dig it out.

                                    That would NOT be MSNBC!

Do you live in Chicago? I have lived here for over thirty years and there are people who are not corrupt. So to make an assumption that all of us are corrupt is just plain wrong and insulting. Show me a large metropolitan city that has no corruption and I will sell you some swamp land for cheap.

Scam article to give MSN some creditability as a "neutral" media outlet! Coverage of small potatoes ($50,000) while the "bigger fries" are just dumped into the hot oil! Solyndra (billions), un-reimbursed bailouts (billions), increased entitlements (billions), the unconstitutionality of Obamacare (billions), increased National debt (trillions)...all in the name of achieving more "flexibility" with our enemies and moving ahead with a total tear down of America, what it stands for, and our position in the world! MSN glosses over the big scams in the name of the socialist agenda being fomented on us by the handlers of Barack Obama.
