Updated 10:10 p.m. ET - Rick Santorum’s campaign netted a victory Saturday night in Louisiana, where he won that state’s GOP primary by a significant margin. The win sparks hope of a campaign rebound, following Santorum’s lopsided losses to Mitt Romney in the Illinois and Puerto Rico primaries.
The former Massachusetts governor finished second and Newt Gingrich third in Saturday's contest.
The political terrain in Louisiana was favorable to the former Pennsylvania senator. Saturday’s vote was limited to Republicans only, making the electorate more conservative.
Exit polls from Louisiana showed Santorum dominating with voters labeling themselves as "very conservative." He also fared very well with those identifying as born-again or evangelical Christian.
"I'm not running as a conservative candidate for president," he said in Wisconsin following his Saturday victory, "I am the conservative candidate for president."
He vowed to press on, saying, "We're still here, we're still fighting."
Of the GOP pack, Santorum had campaigned most aggressively in Louisiana. Twenty of the state’s 46 delegates are stake, with NBC counting 10 for Santorum and five for Romney as of 10:45 p.m. ET.

Any netted delegates by Santorum might assist in eroding Romney’s advantage. But more importantly, a Santorum win would hit pause on the former Massachusetts governor's ability to grab a stranglehold on the race to the nomination.
As GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney takes a break from the campaign trail, Rick Santorum is celebrating his standing with Louisiana voters after winning the state's Republican primary. NBC's Ron Mott reports.
For their parts, Romney and Gingrich had worked to lower expectations heading into the contest. Gingrich said he expected to finish third, but vowed to continue his campaign in hopes that Romney fails to win the 1,144 delegates needed to secure the nomination.
Romney barely campaigned in Louisiana, but may still pick up some delegates as a result of the primary, due in part to the state’s allocation rules.
Delegates are allocated proportionally to candidates based on their share of the vote, unless they finish fewer than 25 percent. All of the votes for candidates receiving less than 25 percent will go toward delegates designated as uncommitted, and won’t be reallocated to candidates who did receive 25 percent or more of the primary vote.
Louisiana’s additional delegates will be allocated at a state convention in June. In their battle for delegates, though, each candidate has had to work to overcome gaffes that have beset their campaigns.

Romney’s rivals seized earlier this week on an aide’s comment likening the former Massachusetts governor’s hopeful pivot to the general election to erasing an Etch A Sketch. Santorum and Gingrich each showed up to events in Louisiana with the children’s toy in tow, hoping to stoke concerns among primary voters that Romney would abandon his conservatism if nominated.

But Santorum and Gingrich each had to deal with their own missteps that threatened to disrupt their momentum ahead of Saturday's contest. Santorum was forced to backtrack on a statement he made on Thursday, when he appeared to suggest that voters were better off with President Barack Obama than Romney, whom he labeled an “Etch A Sketch Republican.”
Both Romney and Gingrich pounced, prompting this statement from Santorum on Friday: “I would never vote for Barack Obama over any Republican and to suggest otherwise is preposterous, This is just another attempt by the Romney Campaign to distort and distract the media and voters from the unshakeable fact that many of Romney's policies mirror Barack Obama's.”

And Gingrich, who faces mounting calls for his withdrawal from the race, on Friday suggested that the president’s behavior only fuels suspicions that Obama is a Muslim -- treading on controversial territory that includes conspiracy theories about Obama’s religion and birthplace.
The Louisiana primary still largely serves, though, as a precursor to the April 3 primary in Wisconsin and the April 24 primary in Santorum’s native state of Pennsylvania.
Both are seen as must-win contests for Santorum in order to block Romney from winning the nomination; major tests of the former Pennsylvania senator's overall staying power in the campaign.

If you actually think that America has swung far left, consider that every single Republican president since World War II would be considered too liberal to get this year's Republican nomination, and Dwight D. Eisenhower would be considered too liberal to get the Democratic nomination.
I have no doubt he'll clean house with the gator shoe redneck power crowd, but it doesn't represent normal America.
Santorum is not out of the running. This stretch of states brings him to within 100 - 150 delegates of Romney. That is why the party leadership is so upset. Right now neither Romney or Santorum can clinch. I have Romney stuck about 100 delegates short. 80 short if Romney manages to turn Wisconsin his way.
Santorum needs to turn New Jersey and New York and California his way and maintain Wisconsin. If Gingrich drops and supports Santorum, this is possible. If Gingrich would have come down to earth 2 weeks ago, Santorum would have clinched by the convention.

Fat chance. NJ Republicans are too liberal to vote for Santorum, and California Republicans tend to be of the "western" part of the party that distrusts right-wing fanatics who want to invade private bedrooms while proclaiming their desire for small government. NY has a conservative streak upstate, but that's probably not enough to overcome the more liberal Republicans elsewhere.
Obama is such radical even his left wing base is mad at him. Ronald Reagan in a RINO and could never be nominated for president with you whack job corporationists.

I've always been in awe of people that know their way around a Etch A Sketch. I just don't want people like Santorum or Romney in any level or government. If we think we're screwed now, I can't imagine how low either of these guys could take us. The promise: More defense spending and lower taxes. Does anyone realize that we have passed the tipping point. Tax increases are needed coupled with a serious reduction in defense spending.
DB- Santorum can't win the nomination even if Gingrich were to get out of the race. First of all, Santorum can't win the nomination because Santorum isn't on all of the upcoming primary ballots and for some of the ones that he did make the ballot for he failed to secure a full slate of delegates so if he wins he still loses the delegates. One of the upcoming states he failed to get a full slate of delegates for is Pennyslvania, the state he represented. How bad a sign is it when you can't get people to represent you as delegates in your home state? Second of all, if Gingrich gets out then a lions share of his supporters go to Romney. If Gingrich supporters wanted anyone but Romney then they would have already moved over to support Santorum but they haven't done that. Gingrich staying in the race helps Santorum more than it helps Romney at this point. Santorum will more than likely win Louisiana primarily because he has appealed to the religious bigot voters there that believe Mormons are a part of a cult and not to be trusted.

I read a woman who was at a Santorum campaign stop Friday, at a gun range in Louisiana, shouted "pretend it's Obama," while Santorum fired a .45 caliber Colt pistol.

Rather ironic when you think about it, since the Republicans game plan in an election is to divide the people and win with 51% of the vote (or 49% and the supreme court.)

Ron Paul is a racist. I like libertarians but not Ron Paul. He spewed much hate against young black men under his name in bright writing not so long ago for many many years. Amy to date the only remaining ballot that Santorum is not on is DC - Indiana - put him on after recounting the signatures. I'm up to date - you are not - and I re-checked before posting.

Unless Romney can increase his take in the remaining races - he cannot clinch. He has a top of 920 assuming the polls remain as is and you give him a victory in Wisconsin. This is without the Gingrich vote added in. I don't expect Santorum to clinch, but as Gingrich has dropped in the polls, 75 - 90% of the Gingrich vote has been going to Santorum.
Even in Louisiana Romney may drop below 25% - making Louisianna almost a WTA for Santorum. That would make only establishment republicans voting for Romney.

Composer, you should have hit them where it hurts with your comments and talked about Regan. Regan would have no chance if he were to run against the guys we have right now because he was far too liberal for the current GOP to elect. He talked a touch Republican game but when he got into office he was a Moderate, maybe even left wing compared to the current Tea Party congressmen and candidates.

You never get a true bead on what is going on in caucuses and primaries. It tends to be wingnuts on both sides. Most regular voters don't have the time or inclination to vote in these things. And remember independents can't vote in many of them.
Take this part of the election cycle for what it is, pure entertainment.
I have no doubt should Santorum somehow magically win the imagined delegates required to run against Obama in the fall, there would be many delegates who would suddenly cast their vote with Romney. The Republicans may not like him much but most of them understand Santorum doesn't stand a chance in the General Election. It would be such a rout it would go down in history.

We dont care..... I dont want to live in a dorm with 3 other couples. I saved and paid my home off, same as my Cuban neighbor. He tells me a story about his father who had a hardware store and a home in Batista's Cuba. When Cuba was taken by Castro they thought well they wont take the business ...just the large companies. Then they took his store, Pheew his father said....at least we have our home. 2 weeks later the showed up and told him his family would have to move into the two back rooms. (4 children and a wife) Then moved two government officials into the community home. Two weeks later his father was on a boat with 14 others headed to Key West.

Doing something to shore up Medicare and SS could be achieved, along with paying down the debt if they'd cut back on the Defense/Offense Budget--but they don't care what happens to ordinary citizens.

You want to fix SS and medicare? Then start saving and putting that money in a safe area for compound interest that will be taxed at 15% look at great companies that pay 6%+ dividends for the last 20-30 years and have maintained their price. My aunt and uncle, uneducated did great with 3 pensions, he was a bus driver for 20 years and then worked 20 years for the state. My aunt worked 35 years at a big department store. They lived simply drove one car and had their SS as well. Plus they put aside a certain amount in investments.

Republicans are mathematically challenged. Look at the national debt numbers by year.
Bush started with $5.7T in debt. His last budget left us with $11.9T in debt. That's more than double what he started with and a rise of $6.2T over 8 years.
Obama started with $11.9T. The debt is now (as of March 25th) $15.6T. An increase of $3.7T.
So, of our current $15.6T in debt, the Bush administration was responsible for ~40% and the Obama administration was responsible for ~25%. Much of Obama's spending was forced on him by the sad mess that Bush left the economy in. Government tax revenue was down and unemployment benefit spending was up due to the Bush recession.
History shows that Republicans are NOT fiscally responsible. Bush, Cheney and Republican majorities in both houses for 6 out of 8 years spent money like drunken sailors. What I find very telling is the fact that every Republican candidate's economic plan is shown by independent analysis to actually increase the debt more than Obama's current spending levels. The latest Ryan plan, just released, shows constant increases in spending for the next 10 years and promises a balanced budget only after almost 30 years!
We cannot survive another Republican spending spree! Vote Democratic this Fall.

When you have a single executive making 2000 times more than the average worker, something is wrong. Those who have more, should be expected to contribute more. In addition to this, our politicians continue to waste billions on pork barrel projects that shouldn't be given any thought in light of all the economic turmoil in our nation. Politicians need to step up and truly do what's best for the people of this nation instead of those who paid there way into office. We are almost to the point where the middle class has been all but eliminated, if any of the GOP candidates gets into office, I truly believe by 2016 we will only have the rich and the poor. One thing I believe is that no one should be given a free ride. Prisoners should be out on chain gangs cleaning up roads and doing what they can to help with the infrastructure that they are a burden on. Those receiving benefits of any sort should be giving back in having to do some service to the community, whether it's answering phones at the health department or watching children so others can do work for the various government agencies that exist.

How can Santorum winning in Louisiana be a big victory, he's suppose to win there and any other place in the south. He needs to win outside his comfort zone to be considered a real threat. Not quite. Gingrich originally was the heir apparent, but, Santorum appears to have taken over. Romney really needed to take one southern state than Florida or Virginia (can if he is the only real candidate on the ballot). Florida is heavily weighted to snowbirds who moved there from the north were Romney is strongest.
From watching the polls, either Rick or Mitt can beat Obama, but as time goes on, Mitt's case is weakened and Santorums is strengthened. Why do I say that? Santorum connects with a broader spectrum of people where Romney mainly appeals to the wealthy.

A few Repub analysts were talking on a talk show on Thursday. And they were talking about how if Rick Saint Orum cannot win the primary, he will willingly assist Obama in winning by running down Romney, etc. Because Saint Orum is thinking that the next election in 2016 he will not have to run against Obama. So it will be open season. So Saint Orum is damaging the party because he does not care whether Obama wins or not, anything to help Saint Orum. And then the Repub analysts laughed, and one said, "Yes, if he waits until 2016 for his serious run for the Presidency, he will be up against Hillary Clinton!" and they laughed. Knowing full well, that Hillary is just as popular, or more, than our dear President now.
Hope Santorum wins the next couple of primaries so this show of clowns continues to amuse me.

The sad part of this story is though Satorum probably won't be the Republican candidate, his beliefs, methods of operation and supporters aren't going away. All of that will continue to exist. These folks feel entitled to tell the rest of us how to run our lives. They will continue require us to pray to their God instead of the one of our choice. They want to require all of us to hate who and what they hate. They believe there should be an American aristocracy and will continue to support those who build it. We may not see them come fully to power in 2012... but we see them continually push mankind toward the Armgeddon they pray for.

All I can think is that the Republican Party looked at the situation and threw this batch of clowns into the election process rather than risk someone who is reasoned, practical, level-headed and capable of winning in 2016 in to get spanked by Obama in 2012. There is only 20 delegates up for grabs in LA. Romney will still pick up delegates. So Rick might pick up 3-5 more in the delegate count. The press will probably make a big deal out of it.
