Mitt Romney said Wednesday that the primaries have shown his ability to connect with Republicans an independents alike, while Rick Santorum contended that the former Massachusetts governor faces mounting doubts within the GOP.
Santorum spent the day after winning the primaries in Mississippi and Alabama in Puerto Rico, which hosts its primary on Sunday. Romney, who heads to that U.S. territory later this week, spent Wednesday raising money in the New York area, and tried in a lone television interview to a general election campaign.
"This is ultimately a question about who can get the support of the Republican Party and independents to be able to win the White House," Romney said in an afternoon interview on FOX News. "And I'm very pleased with the fact that, over the last several contests, I got a million more votes than either Sen. Santorum or Speaker Gingrich from the Republicans in these contests."
While he won Hawaii's overnight caucuses, Romney nonetheless faced a withering media narrative after failing to carry either of the two conservative strongholds, stoking doubts about his core strength witthin the GOP. He still remains the odds-on favorite to accrue the needed 1,144 delegates to secure the nomination, though Santorum sought to take advantage of his competitor's difficulty in closing the deal.
"He looked like the odds-on favorite at the beginning of the campaign. We tend to do that as Republicans, sort of take the person next in line," Santorum said in an availability alongside Luis Fortuño, the Puerto Rican governor. "But I think what you've found is that Governor Romney is uniquely disqualified in making some of the most important arguments that we need to make in this country with the respect to the role of government in our lives."
Santorum still faced a challenge from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, with whom Santorum split the conservative vote in last night's primaries. Gingrich has vowed to continue with his campaign, and headed on Wednesday to Illinois, a major state which hosts a primary on Tuesday.
But Romney's fundraising on Wednesday presages a prolonged and more expensive primary, for which few Republicans seemed eager.
And for the former governor's part, he emphasized his success among conservatives who have shown up to the primaries and caucuses so far, and said the most conservative voters with whom he's struggled would end up rallying behind his candidacy in November.
"When you ask conservatives in these prior elections, 'Who, as conservatives, did you vote [for]?' I won the conservative vote," Romney explained. "Some who are very conservative may not be in my camp, but they will be when I become the nominee, when I face Barack Obama."

I have to doubt that the GOP contenders will garner more independents than President Obama.
So far not one of these guys has even distanced themselves from the other. How are they supposed to contend with Obama in the national election? It is not looking good for the right.
nomoresameo: Wanted to say that I enjoy your posts.
Is Romney REALLY that divorced from reality to believe that he "connects" with anyone? He is the walking definition of the word "awkward".
But, you can't help but be entertained as he sticks his size 10's into his mouth yet again.
How true this is, i am not sure, but I heard on some news program that when Romney became governor, he had a back elevator put in so he wouldn't have to meet with people. That he doesn't really like campaigning and talking to people. Just something I picked up on one of the news programs.
Thank you for the compliment newday.
In answer to your question in my opinion, yes. He would have to be divorced from reality if he believes he's connecting with republicans, democrats or independents.
I had to laugh when I read your comment about his size 10's because it's so true and laughable.
This latest Romney quote is as delusional as the rest of them. Republicans and Democrats as well as independents find it difficult to believe a word he says. How does this lack of trust give bring you a connection with any group?
nomoresameo,
Will you look at this? A 'fresh' article for us to nibble on! ☺
Couldn't agree more!
Independents are not turned on by the rabid right wing radicals!
Phine: He wouldn't even have his driver's license renewed in the ordinary public setting and had it done privately. You are right. He really doesn't like people.
Definitely true, nomoresameo.
Hi, Fiesty! Inside for awhile!
*waves to NDD*
I hope you are enjoying some of the beautiful weather we are! It is 81 degrees here today in the middle of March!
No climate change happening here... ;o)
Gosh, it is warm here too, getting some spring work done!
Feisty..............isn't it the truth? We only had to wait about 4 hours or so for a new article to jump into a new thread.
But I am very thankful that First Read is always here giving us a chance to talk about things and get things off our chest from time to time.
I also wanted to say how much I enjoy reading your comments and the comments from so many more such as newday, Amy, phinephancy, Jody, Dennis and so many more.
I had the misfortune of saying something on the last thread that caused Amy (I believe) a lot of undue heat from detractors from the right. I hope I never make the mistake of putting someone in harms way again in such a way. It was not my intent nor hers to say anything that could have been misconstrued, but a few from the far far right found a way to spin things in a negative and untrue manner.
Seems to me that Romney saying he connects with Independents better than Gingrich or Santorum is kind of like being the tallest of the seven dwarfs.
Flip Romney is the biggest liar than anyone who has ever run for President.
The right wing detractors don't 'do' nuance very well! ;o)
Don't even get me started about their lack of sense of humor!
I can't speak for Amy but I would say no harm, no foul!
Thank you Feisty. I hope she accepts my apology (if truly warranted) and that she sees it in the same light ( no harm no foul ).
nomoresameo: Amy is well practiced at handling the fringe! But, I am sure she will be charmed by your concern. Really, so glad you write on FR.
No Romney, you couldn't connect a Bluetooth headset to a iPhone. You also couldn't resonate in the Grand Canyon.
The GOP is completely out of touch with reality and have no national loyalties.
Thanks,
The Independent Conservative
Romney connects better with a rock then he does with reality and that's stretching it
Romney will soon be backpedaling from his previous conservative rhetoric to deliver a more moderate message because he isn't a conservative at heart. When he reaches the center, though, he will find President Obama waiting for him because the president has been staking out the moderate vote since the beginning. In the meantime, the Republican Party has been chasing the far right wing christian extremist vote. All the GOP will have going for it will be neo-fascist militia groups and the right wing lunatic fringe...not a game-winning combination, is it?
He connects with the GOP and independents? I think Mitt could connect far more efficiently if he were a lineman for the power company.
Romney DOES connect with the American people. We call it a sucker punch. After a couple of jabs to the face.
This is a one of the most idiotic chain I've ever seen. But, in this country there are more morons than reasonable, thinking citizens. This hurts this country for years. George Bush was a failure and then we elected a bigger failure in Obama. Romney is the most qualified candidate since Bill Clinton to run for President of this country. If the media would report truthfully then it might serve to educate those on this chain.
The fact is all politicians lie. Obama promised to cut the budget deficit in half after his first term. Where are we with that?
Anony Mous1
I understand your frustrations but please refrain from calling names. Present an idea or opinion and be prepared to back it up. Romney is a nice guy, has a good family, and I have never met a Mormon I didn't like. However, I am following the primaries and Romney does not have me convinced that he has what it takes. To most people, Romney is a rich white guy that will continue with the status quo. Romney has changed his stance on abortion and gay marriage and he has this little thing called RomneyCare (which is not working). Why do you think Romney is qualified?
Okay, clearly any iota of a brain Mitt had left is gone. Just what Independents does he imagine he connects with?????
Romney's son Matt says "Obama is great!" lol...
Mitt Romney said Wednesday that the primaries have shown his ability to connect with Republicans an independents alike, while Rick Santorum contended that the former Massachusetts governor faces mounting doubts within the GOP.
And they forgot to tell homy many million more really dislike both of them.
Vote Democrat to bring the country forward. Send the GOP back to the dark ages, where they belong.
IRESPOND,
Do you think that there should be a Republican party, or should we just have one party, the Democrats?
Do you think that there should be a Republican party, or should we just have one party, the Democrats?
The Republican Party was actually a decent party before the Tea Party took over. -And of course, before the era of STUPIDITY that George W. Bush initiated-
Why can't the party decide to have Republicans that make sense? I do not care how much you care about the GOP. YOU MUST agree that the TEA PARTY - Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, Michelle Bauchman, etc. are all really NOT very sane -let alone intelligent-
We should be able to have more than just 2 parties. Unfortunately, with the stupid PACS that will never happen now. Thanks to our stupid Justices, elected by George W. Bush -his only legacy: STUPIDITY
More than ever we are at the mercy of stupid rich people.
What do you expect him to say? Romney goes along with everything that everybody says, he's like a cartoon, a fake, and he made his millions by ripping Americans off for their pensions, liquidating businesses, laying off American Workers, and shipping American Jobs Overseas.
Obama / Biden 2012
nomoresameo: I'm not sure about that. Romney polled only 29% of Independents four years ago--Right now, NYTimes/Rasmussun poll has Obama pulling in 49% of Independents and that the poll says, is in great part due to the gender gap (almost 20 points in Obama's favor). Course, polls are just a snapshot, but is Romney REALLY going to count on women forgetting about the promise to defund planned parenthood, the support for the "personhood" amendment, making women two beings the moment an egg is fertilized, his "I wouldn't have put it that way" slap on the wrist for calling a young woman who dared speak in support of access to contraceptives a "slut"? Well...he can hope, now can't he....
I'm a Democrat, but if I was absolutely obliged to vote for a Republican that would be Romney. The other three are way too crazy. Romney has been shy when it comes to social issues, whereas Santorum and Gingrich thrive on spewing garbage and hyperbole (and I'm not even a social issue voter). Romney's economic policies (and maybe Santorum's) would very likely keep the status quo, whereas Gingrich and Ron Paul would send the country to the gutter. On balance, Romney comes on top for me.
The only decent Republican in the race was Buddy Roemer (despite his crazy tax plan), and they lost him.
Though I'd still prefer Obama.
Normally, Job 1, I agree with almost everything you say, but on this one, I gotta say that, in my opinion, George W. Bush still holds the title "World's Biggest Liar" because of all the damage Bush did when he told his lies, AND because of the callousness in Bush's lies. What I mean is, Bush knew that the American People normally trust their President, and Bush took that trust and betrayed us in a horrible, horrible manner!
Obama / Biden 2012
This will be an election of For Obama or Against Obama, not For Romney/Santorum/Gingrich/Paul.
This independent is voting For Obama even if I don't agree with all of his policies/decisions/positions.
The GOPsters give us Windsock Romney, Angry Bird Gingrich, and Rick the Papal Talibani. Ron Paul should run on the Libertarian ticket -- he doesn't belong with the GOPsters.
Rmoney connects with everyone who owns an offshore bank account - the 1% who will vote for him.
nomoresameo
Charmed, I'm sure! (to borrow Feisty's word.) I enjoyed your posts.
You're a real gentleman, and no worries, I get into trouble all by myself all the time!
Amy: trouble is such a strong word, i like to think more as mischief :D
As an independent, I would have to agree with him that Romney has a better chance with independents than Santorum or Newt. However, Ron Paul may have a bigger pull on the independent vote than Romney.
Another thing to consider is how well Romney does with the wealthy, and people that consider themselves wealthy. He is getting almost all of this demographic in the Republican party, and may have some appeal among the wealthy that are independents or Democrats.
If Romney connects with the GOP and independents, than I can jump off of the Empire State Building without a scratch. Slick Mitt lies once again; claiming that he connects with the GOP. He does, but only with the establishment and the few moderates left, if any, and at least 40-50% of the GOP vote is somewhat associated with the Tea Party. The conservatives are mostly with Santorum, and some are probably willing to avoid voting for Romney altogether (though not a lot). As for independents, Romney is bleeding them faster than a squeezed sponge. His constant right-wing advertising and negative ads have decimated his once considerable army of independents, and as the GOP keeps forcing him to the right he will lose more, while more independents will side with the moderate Obama.
And it is amazing to me how this guy has the balls to say that he will create 11 million jobs in his first term, grow the economy at 4% each year, all while cutting spending. You can't create 11 million jobs without a stimulus similar in size to Obama's (without the tax cuts), and especially not while cutting spending. He also claims that he will balance the budget without taxes, even though that will hurt the middle class. Finally, this snout-nosed GOP scumbag has the guts to say he is with the middle class, even though his budget would hurt seniors and programs that help Americans and his tax plan will disproportionately favor the wealthy over the middle class. This guy is a joke, and I hope Obama will kick his ass in November.
OBAMA BIDEN 2012
TO HELL WITH ROMNEY 2012
See? I told you! I know my Ames and great minds think alike! ;o)
As for the mischief... who us? lol
I am not sure how Romney can say he connects with the GOP and independents. He does not connect with me and that's all that counts.
I can't speak for all but I can tell you that he does not connect with this independent............ I suspect that we would be better off with what we have now.
Ron Paul 2012, make a difference!
"All you guys treat Romney like a dog"
Until these buffoons started declaring and campaigning, I was looking forward to voting against Obama in 2012. However, with the war the GOP has declared against women's reproductive rights, I'll be voting for someone who doesn't want to turn America into a theocracy like Iran. Your religious beliefs do NOT give you the right to control my medical care.
Parents do NOT have the right to withhold life saving medical treatment from their children for religious reasons. That's murder.
And some old man living in the Vatican does NOT get to say what my insurance company covers for my health plan. Santorum doesn't think anyone should use birth control. Well, I wish his mother had!
"Santorum is a sick bimbo, how can anyone vote for him is beyond crazy"
"Santorum said his Tea buddies in Wisconsin are on suicide watch"
There's no way this flip-flopping billionaire person, who pays less than 14% taxes to IRS connects with this Independent. There's not one honest, or responsible Republican out there that catches my attention for this next election.
Neither one "connects" with anyone except billionaires (Romney) and religious extremists (Santorum). They're both so far out of touch with the real world that they should be medicated. Santorum has managed to insult and alienate pretty much every demographic except his frothing-at-the-mouth supporters, and Mitt has never appealed to anyone except the people who aren't quite desperate enough to vote for Santorum.
Romney claims he connects with Independents? Hardly; if he gets anymore Plastic and Square, I might have to start calling him Mr. Credit Card.
This is just more compounding evidence that Romney has a different reality than the majority of the voters.
Whether it's a mindset he can't get past, just denial, or what his handlers are telling him, it's pretty clear that of all the things that come out of his mouth (unlike pre-written lines in stump speeches by his team just to gain support), he seems to honestly believe this to be true.
The Mitt Show is on kiddies it could even outdraw Bevis and Butthead
I like being able to fire people
I’m not concerned about the very poor
Let Detroit go bankrupt
Don’t try to stop the foreclosure process
Planned Parenthood, we're going to get rid of that
My wife drives two Cadillac’s
My friends are NASCAR owners
and that the trees are "right height?"
Who could not be any less convincing as an “ordinary guy” if he literally wore a top hat and monocle?
Depends on what day of the week as too which ones he's "connecting" (lying) to.
The REAL Romney, which I am guessing is the moderate one that was a Governor, would have connected with me and other moderates... keep religion out of government... support of settled law Roe v Wade... conservative economic principles... health care reform that insures us all... kinda... "moderate".
The "new and improved" Romney is not. NOT improved and NOT moderate and does NOT connect with Independents. (See 1.49 so I don't have to repeat it) Thanks Witchking!
LMarcT -That's the truth
These guys are going to set records for spending in the primaries. Romney thinks he can buy the Presidency and Santorum well he just doesn't think...
... and Obama will just proclaim that you have to vote for him or you are a racist and will go to jail.
TO: witchrunner who wrote:
I am really astounded at how many really sick people call the Republican Party "home" and how the lies never stop.
Obama / Biden 2012
Is that all you've got? Oh...I'm sorry, of course it is...look at the Republicon field.
Witchrunner: 3 years in to his term...just before Re-election...all you've still got is the race card?? Pathetic..
go sit on unemployment witchrunner. That's all obama can proclaim he accomplished.
"Romney is Choking on Delegates"
Santorum is now in Puerto Rico kissing butt for Votes, but the people of Puerto Rico don't like Phonies.
"Newt is on the moon looking for a Cow"
"Old Paul's time on stage is running short"
Go back to the race card, joker. Employment has been rising for several months now.
Exactly which voters is Romney referring to???
You know those racing team owners, those nascar guys.
Keith,
Romney just lost the "race car" vote
"Mitt said dogs are mans best friend"
I think he's hoping to pick up Newt's Twitter followers after Newt drops out. Romney doesn't know the vast majority of them are not real people. Shhhh, don't tell him! This just keeps getting more amusing.
If Romney is the candidate, his income from Bain Capital, his multi-state lifestyle and his 14.5% tax rate will be brought to the public's attention quicker than Al Gore got pummeled in the press for sighing. A rich guy shark investor for President is not going to sit well with Independents.
Conservatives may be able to look beyond Romney's lifetime of liberal Republican policy positions, but it's going to bite them when down ballot candidates try to make Obama's Healthcare reform an issue to run against. How can they when the top of the ticket's healthcare plan was used as a blueprint for the President's?
Good point, Amy. Reminds me to ask where are the rest of Mitt's tax returns. Releasing only 1 actual return (2010) and the draft of 2011 makes me wonder what it is he has to hide in the prior years.
How will he explain why he has those bank accounts overseas?
Well, according to the mainstream media, we have become a liberal nation desiring socialist ideals and we love Obamacare, so it only makes sense that Romney could attract a lot of those who were attracted to Obama if Romney is such the "liberal conservative" in a liberal America, right? I guess if Obama wins, it truly will prove we have turned away from the free market capitalist system in favor of establishing a socialist foundation, and Obama is slightly more liberal than Romney.
STexan - What we have turned away from is Crony Capitalism and the Graft and Corruption of our government. No Republican is running on cleaning up the government. Keeping the evil we know is safer than choosing the evil we don't understand. A 1%er has no idea how I live and no way to understand the challenges of the working class.
Stexan, if you believe that you most likely believe the earth is flat. Obama is no more a socialist than you an intellectual.
Keith-1952
Crony capitalism? What do you call the health care bill. Who helped write it. Health care insurers and drug companies. That is who. Who will profit. Sure as hell not the American public. They just insured 20 million people to suck off the government tit, giving viagra to everyone so we can breed more poor.
Wow John, bitter a little? Does it bother you just a little bit that your party has moved so far to the right that Ronald Reagan would not be able to capture the Republican Nomination? Does it bother you just a little that it was your party under Abraham Lincoln that freed the slaves and now the best they can come up with is "birth control is bad"? That a Republican named Theodore Roosevelt was such a populist president he was able to balance his support for both Corporate America and Labor and now your party is reduced to attacking school teachers? Look at what your party has become. Another poster asked the question if we would be better off with just the Democratic Party. I would answer that question like this; if true fiscal conservative can't or won't take their party back from the radical right then yes, we would be better off. If Republicans can rally and take their party back to its roots then no. Republicans (true Republicans, not TeaParty) provide a loyal opposition and balance to the Democratic Party. But John, it's up to you and the rest of your party. Good luck with that.
@STexan
Doonesbury had the perfect definition of socialism yesterday. For a conservative a socialist is a black guy with power. Seems to fit since ever since President Obama was elected that's all we hear out of them. He's a socialist this and he's a socialist that. It's right up there with unions, and we know how they feel about them.
Ol_Doc
I am Independent and so is at least 35% of the population, but guess who gets to pay for the mistakes from both sides. No, I am not bitter, I am pissed!
John - as soon as a Republican makes it possible for me to afford insurance I will vote for them.
Wake up now!:
You are regurgitating what your hear in the media. We have two media groups in America today: Republican Media and Democratic Media. Both are bias. You need to filter what you are hearing.
The reason why it may seem that Mitt Romney is not connecting is because the Democratic media keeps harping on it. The fact is it is the Republican primary and all the candidates has to tell each and every group what they want to hear. In a sense, they are all flip-floppers including Obama.
Now, you ask about qualifications:
1. Mitt Romney is a successful business man.
2. He became rich because of the American capitalist structure which we all enjoy as Americans.
3. Running a company means that you have to make hard decisions, show leadership and have vision in order to be successful. Sometimes, you have to lay people off.
4. Mitt Romney left Massachusetts if better shape than when he started as Governor. Don't forget that the State senate has a Democratic majority.
5. Mitt Romney successfully run the Salt Lake City Olympics.
6. The Healthcare Plan in Massachusetts is not a bad thing. What we needed is for Obama to make a decision on how and if that would work at the federal level. These are decision points. You can't blame Romney because Obama's decision to go federal was bad.
7. Romney has great family values.
8. He has deeply held religious beliefs but is not dogmatic like Santorum.
9. He is highly educated.
10. Everything that Mitt Romney has he worked for, including his wealth.
11. He is the most qualified Presidential candidate since Bill Clinton to run for President.

I saw Romney in person when he came to Portland last month, and he couldn't even connect with a Northeast audience - came across as someone from another part of the country, which is crazy, because he has a summer home in New Hampshire and was governor of MA.
One thing that surprised me, by seeing a billionaire up close, was that he didn't seem particularly smart. I think we have a belief in this country, that acquiring great wealth through investing requires great intellect, when, in reality, it takes starting off with a large sum to invest and great connections, which is what Romney had.
Keith-1952
With all due respect, health care insurance, at least for me with not get cheaper under the new health care bill. The rule is that I think 80% of all costs must be used for health care and not administration. It is not based on and individual, but by the group. So if you are healthy and don't go to the doctor, your rates can actually go up.
Amy B. Portland, ME:
I bet you think Obama is brilliant? Why?
I think you have your Math is incorrect or you might just be illogical because Romney is not a billionaire -- not even close. We have great weather here in Massachusetts so your fuzzy Math can't be chalked up to the chill outside. Here is some advise, stop being an idiot and learn to think for yourself.
So anyone with money to invest can be successful? Or are you implying that Romney inherited his wealth -- which he did not?
My fellow Americans:
Do you yearn for the days under Bill Clinton when America experienced great prosperity and security? If yes, vote for Mitt Romney.
If after four years you are not happy, kick him out. Stop voting along party lines. Vote for the candidate that will create a bright future for us and our children.
Don't you know that the GOP is the chosen party of God. If you disagree with the GOP you are a socialist, a communist and a political idiot, you aren't a real American. That is what some in the GOP would have us believe. Of course I am being sarcastic.
Mitt Romney got rich by shredding peoples lives. Any one can succeed by raiding corporations. Is that what you are defending Anony Mous1? Go ahead vilify the poor, the disabled, the elderly, women.
I will follow your advice, I am a moderate center left republican who is going to vote for O'bama in November. Considering what the GOP is willing to do to my future health care options or my chances for an education I don't have to think about this for a second. If this is a kind of European socialism so be it. Germany has thrived with a similar kind of socialism for the last 60 years. The only people who would benefit from the tax scheme Mitt Romney proposes are the wealthiest among us. Everyone else would be taxed into penury just so the richest can live like kings.
I expect to be hammered hard for this post. I am criticizing the party of "GOD" after all. If the GOP is the party of "GOD" then "GOD" is not just, or compassionate, or loving. If that is the case He or She does not deserve my worship or consideration.
I don't know how to break the news to you but the Affordable Health Care law doesn't fully go into effect until 2014. The insurance exchange hasn't even been formed. If you have a problem I suggest you take it up with your private insurance company...you know, those folks who like to deny for per-existing condition and cancel catastrophic illness.
Wade, Tampa Florida.:
There you go with the "vote party line" routine. How has Romney shred people's lives? Don't regurgitate what you hear in the media. The media is either biased towards the Republicans or Democrats. There is no reporting anymore.
Mitt Romney is part of a religious minority. Why would you lump him with the extreme elements of the party? Do you know how Mitt Romney will pay for his tax plan? He will close all the loopholes which would in-turn will have a net benefit to the Fed for Social Security and other important Social Programs.
Are you better off under Obama today than you were 3 years ago? If you don't like Romney in 4 years, then you kick him out. But for you to repeat untruths and propaganda does damage to you and your family in the long term. It will take hears to repair the damage done by George Bush. Obama continues all of George Bush's policies and has added a few of his own that has double our debt.

Yes I am. I don't like Romney NOW and I don't want him to be president now or ever.
You are correct as far as fox news is concerned, Anony Mous1, Msnbc does not lie. If I am wrong you prove it by sites sources on both sides of the aisle. You claimed that Mitt is better you prove it.

Yes! Go ahead and pull the wool over your own eyes.
I did not say MSNBC lies; what the media does is spin. Haven't you ever see a snippet of some person's statements taken out of context?
You said I was lying in effect, But for you to repeat untruths and propaganda does damage to you and your family in the long term, with your semantics. I get all my news from Msnbc. Ergo if I am lying or passing on half truths so is Msnbc by your logic.
I consider, Yes! Go ahead and pull the wool over your own eyes, a verbal slap in the face. Is that all you have taunts and insults?
Any article that contains the words, "Romney says he connects with," has got to be in the running for funniest article of the day.
Maybe MSNBC is running Onion stories.
Well, how will he connect with women, poor folks, the middle class, senior citizens, veterans, people of color, folks who think pets are family, anyone who is not a morman!
and everyone else,
For you Flip Romney, it's on record as of yesterday with your latest update, that you will get rid of planned parenthood. Try to lie your way out of this statement when it bites you in your lying a$$.
What keeps astounding me....is these guys are so far back in time they still can't grasp the concept of videotape. And everything they say is probably being recorded in some way. When I saw/heard Romney's recent pledge to get rid of PP, in light of all of the backlash already, he opened his fat mouth and said what?!
But then again, I shouldn't be surprised.
LOL! For some reason, the theme song from Flipper is now running through my head. I'll hear it every time I see a picture of Mitt from now on. Maybe he can use it as his new campaign theme song.
Amazing how much damage the Bush family has caused to the Republican Party. They must have push back the Party at least 20 years, maybe more.
The subpar performance of this group of Republican candidates in this presidential cycle clearly shows how disappointed even then Republican voters are in their Party. Low turnout, split vote, candidates dropping off because a show of incompetence, candidates dropping off because they mistaken this process to a beauty contest and fielding the "office fool" as a candidate.
Not only have this bunch of clowns shown that they are not qualified to be President of the United States, they clearly demonstrated they are not even in the same class as President Obama.
It is clear by now to all Americans that President Obama will get his second term and hopefully his second chance to get is agenda through. As it should be the responsibility falls squarely on the citizens of this great country to give President Obama a responsible Congress to help him govern instead of impeding him to give Americans what they mandated him back in 2008. My follow Americans, please do not vote for your Party, vote for the best candidate in your district.
We don't need another war, another economic collapse and more begging for Arab oil. We need a clean economy, affordable healthcare for all, a strong coalition to the take care of our global military responsibilities and we a decent leader of sound mind and moral values in the White House.
Give President Obama his destined legacy.
You don't have to blame the Bush family, the Republican party imploded on its own Evangelical, Warmongering, Worker hating self
Thank you, Ad'm, for the reminder concerning a responsible Congress. There is a cynical part of me that thinks the RNC purposefully set up this looney-toons Republican Primary to distract everyone from the fact that the Republicans that are in leadership positions in Congress have absolutely no idea how to dig us out of the Bush mess that they helped to create.
None of the current candidates connects with me. Can we get Jon Huntsman back in the race?
Probably not, I am waiting on Diogenes to bring us a candidate.
Good luck with that....
Jon Huntsman is a fake. He was a moderate, which I like, but I oppose the Ryan plan, which he supports. Essentially the Ryan plan privatizes Medicare and throws the seniors to the mercy of the "free market." If he had a Democratic Congress, then I would be somewhat pleased. But no more. It's Obama or annihilation. Your choice America.
OBAMA BIDEN 2012
Regardless of qualifications, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, Grover Norquist, Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh would NEVER ordain a candidate that would dare put the country's well being over the Republican regime's well being. In fact, if it were leagal, I'm positive they would have had Huntsman executed for accepting the ambassadorship to China...instead they had to extradite him to Utah.
boto - Huntsman is looking better every day. If only the early contenders had realized that the new rules are you just keep hanging on regardless of what the votes are.....
Romney doesnt' connect with anyone that doesn't own a 2000 dollar suit and can afford a driver. Anyone voting for Romney is voting for someone that does not understand the lifestyle of working people.
I have a couple of those suits (no driver, though) and I still think Mitt is a moron! The REAL scary part is he's the brightest of the lot ...think about THAT.
Romney connects with no one and will say and do and spend what ever he thinks will get him the nomination... which is when you will see the real flip flopping begin when he tries to connect with the general electorate...
We always elect the best liar, no matter what else they might be.
Think much about a career in politics, Keith?
Sailcat - I don't qualify, I have a firm attachment to reality.
And I'm the "King of the world"!
I know. Every morning i listen to romney replays. I love the lake. I love grits. Your trees are the right height. It's romney connecting with avg folk. They also play other sound clips. I love to fire people. I love to watch nascar races with team owners. Wanna bet $10,000.
And my favorite, Romney condesendingly telling a crowd, "don't you get it? People run corporations. Therefore, corporations are people too!"
People run cars! Cars are people too!!!
People run marathons! Marathons are people, too!
People run government!!! Governments are people too!!!! (note the sarcasm on how Romney compares corporations to people, yet views the government (run by people) as a monolithic machine).
OBAMA BIDEN 2012
he talks too fast for me to hear what he has to say. but then again, I don't think even a voice coach could help him now.
btw, this yankee lives in SC and he didn't get my vote. my sympathies to the rest of you who have yet to experience your state's primary.
we couldn't wait to get ALL of them out of here.
I am dreading it here, I can't believe they take themselves serious. Liars every one.
I'm from South Carolina as well. I'm just glad we have a very early primary so we can get all the bull out of the way and watch the rest of the country pick the worst bum buggers from a batch of crap on the field. And I didn't vote for him either. I voted for Perry, actually because he was the worst candidate in the field.
My dad is 90% independent.Guess who he is voting for?MITT ROMNEY.Most independents are not voting for their own canidate because they know that would just be throwing away their vote. And for most people who say "independents are going to vote for Obama"-YOU ARE WRONG!The independent party stands for less government and more rights to the citizens.I don't think Obama's healthcare plan stands for less government.I'm also pretty sure that the independents don't like the way Obama is spending money.
No, Obama's health care plan stands for poor people that have no way to afford insurance today. If they make the companies compete we will all be able to afford insurance.
Why would an idependant vote for someone who can't even understand what it might be like to live on 30,000 dollars a year?
How did the Independents feel when George W. Bush took the surplus we had when Bill Clinton left office and turned it into a deficit? How about that stagnant economy he oversaw, where the wealthiest got richer and the middle class lost income? Did the independents appreciate it when President Obama kept firefighters, cops and teachers on the job by sending stimulus money to the states during the Great Recession? How do the Independents feel about the fact the big three auto companies are all profitable again for the first time since? Or, did they prefer it when Romney wrote the Op- Ed saying "let Detroit Go Bankrupt?"
You tell me.
My husband calls himself independant and he is extremely liberal compared to me. I am a registered Democrat and I call myself moderate because I swing to both ends of the spectrum depending on what the issue is. I think that is why it is very hard to predict what will happen in this election. People do not line up with their parties. Perhaps that is a good thing.
Random - You seem to speak for the "Independent Party", isn't that a bit of an oxymoron? A little like "Anarchists of the world unite"? The only Independent in Congress that I am aware is a Senator who leans to the left...not the right.
Random pennsylvanian
I believe you may be confused about what is freedom and what is only what may suit you. The Right is into far less freedom. They just talk liberty.
Mind you, government is always a bit heavy handed at best but there needs to be some structure that will hold the country together in harmony. That means we have to mind our own business. A political party that does nothing but rant about what others need to do is not for you unless you don't care that you will have no personal choices left. Over 90 % of women use contrceptives. Why do a bunch of fake Conservatives and Christians say otherwise? Women own their bodies just like men own theirs. What, if the males were told that some need to be made impotent so their offspring would not spoil the herd, or any reason? How would that grab you? What if the so-called Christians took over and told you what to believe and you were Jewish or Muslim or an Atheist? They are already into "Sharia" law for women.
Obama is not what I hoped for but there is no way in hell I would vote for the fake conservatives that seek that kind of power.
Think about it.
I hate to break this to you, but if your dad belongs to the "independent party," he's not an independent.
The independent party stands for less government and more rights to the citizens.
Random Pennsylvanian: I think you misunderstand what it is to be an independent.
An "independent" voter is someone who chooses not to be identified with either of the two major political parties. We often use the term as a synonym for "centrist," but that isn't necessarily true.
What can be said for certain is that there is no political party called "The independent party," and therefore there is no single set of political propositions that being an independent voter "stands for."
Exactly RonB, I am an independent GOP moderate who has voted Democratic in every general election since 1980 when I was old enough to vote.
Then Wade, why are you still a Republican?? Is there a side of you that thinks the GOP will change??? Not before 2012, if even. The Tea Party has such an autocratic control over the party that is has practically turned it into a political/ideological black hole: any moderate who goes in will be ripped apart limb by limb.
OBAMA BIDEN 2012
I will not give up on the GOP because like you asked, I think the GOP can be the party of moderation again. As a registered Republican I was able to vote against Mitt Romney in the primary. I look forward to voting for O'bama this fall. I am not misspelling his name. He had an Irish Grandfather
This is one independent who will NOT be voting Republican this year. ANY party that states their number one agenda item is to see the POTUS fail can go to hell. ANY PARTY. Mr. Romney is too out of touch with average Americans for me to think he will even attempt to represent ALL of us. Corporations are people? Not this time buddy.
you are right, corporations exist for one reason and no person is involved
I voted GOP in the primary I had no choice. I will not be voting GOP in November.
So do Romney supporters completely disregard all of his flip flops? Think he's cool now because he likes cheese grits y'all? His only platform is any position in opposition to the President even if it's a position that Romney agrees with or previously supported. I still can't understand why people support him. Atleast Santorum stands for something (even though I don't understand how he convinced so many women to vote for him yesterday). Maybe 1 day I'll understand the republican party and its supporters.
They are ideologies, they really don't care what he stands for as long as he is Republican
For Mulligan Mitt to make a sure hell-fire lie like another one that he just keeps on making. With all of his flip-flopping only proves that he will say and do just about anything for anybody at any given time. Just as long as your an ubber-rich white male that falls under the 1%ile of the richest American people. Now, now don't get me wrong all of you devoted right wing-nuts out there, there's nothing wrong with being so rich that you hide your money in foriegn accounts but yet you want to be president of this great nation. And that you earned your money by being the CEO "Vulture-Capitalist" That's not the issue here, or is it? No this topic is about Mulligan Mitts claim to be connected with the GOP and Independents alike. Henceforth yesterdays results just go to show the American people why he has the dubious monicker of "Flip-Flopper"...
Go figure, then go vote...
Mitt The Morpher has to work so hard to "sell" himself, maybe what he is pushing, the people DON'T WANT!
In the category of lying, Romney wins in a landslide.

Willard Mitt Romney wears magic Mormon underwear.
My former Baptists minister said in church one day that Catholics were not real Christians. This is why he is my former pastor. I have never met a Morman that was not of the highest moral fiber, but I have met tons of nasty Catholics and Baptists. Religion should not be a factor.
Show your disdain for Mitt Romney!
Mitt:
You do NOT 'connect' with me.
While it is clear that Romney and none of the other aspirants are presidential material, the question is, are the right wingers stupid enough to vote for any of them. Do the Tea baggers realize they will be among the worst hurt by a Republican victory? Seems not.
Does anyone on this blog, Progressive or Conservative, believe Newt can do ANYTHING about gas prices even if all the gas he farts is added to the pool?
To get a proper take on what a good Conservative Republican is, one should study on Eisenhower, a super great Republican president. On the other side, try understanding how Roosevelt, a super great Democrat, actually helped the country come out of the great depression.
Many say it was the spending on WW2. Sure, spending, that's the key. But, why spend it on death and destruction where so much is wasted on lives and treasure? How about we just spend like intelligent people rather than only spend if the already rich get richer?
I'm not happy about the Democrats as they have not done enough, but I'm terrified at the thought of a Republican administration that will do a rewind from the past and squeeze the remaining life out of us.
I'm not surprised at all that the teabaggers would shoot themselves in the foot - I'm surprised that they can even find their own foot. These are, after all, the kind of people that show up in the Emergency Room, without insurance, with their privates stuck in a pop bottle...
It is sad, but the days of an Eisenhower Republican ended when the party sold it's soul to the evangelicals and now they have what they deserve. Complete know-nothing, do-nothing frat-boys in congress and a complete liar at the head of their pack. Let's just hope they keep floundering for another few years - to give us time to recover from the last Republican Presidency.
Well said!
You obama lovers can go find another forum to spew your lies. He is nothing but a to bit 3rd world, white hating, wanna be dictator trying to run the us. The sooner he is gone, the sooner we can get back to real living.
"...nothing but a to bit 3rd world, white hating, wanna be dictator..."
Ah! A whiny racist! How pathetic.
I can ignore the racism, but I just wish they'd learn to spell.
Amen to that!
I'll say it again, jolly joker...you do realize that the arguement of "reverse racism" was the argument started by the KKK in the early 1970's and now being resurfaced by sympathisers such as Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reily and Sean Hannity, don't you? I have yet to see any evidence that President Obama is a racist.
Since when is the freely elected President of the United States a dictator? I'm sorry that democracy offends you and your aryan ilk so much.
I'm beginning to believe that the DNC is paying people like you to post on here to make the teabaggers look like total lunatics. How can ANYONE be so willfully ignorant?!?!?!?
You leave Jolly Joker if you can not be civil to others. And if the news vine cracks down on me, I am not sorry I wrote this.
