If Ron Paul should sweep both Alaska and North Dakota, do you think that will vault him into contention to be the Repubs Pres nominee? Ron Paul is fighting the wrong battle for this election cycle. Everyone is ignoring Ron Paul because he is not participating in the political struggle that is being played out. It's not about the government at all - it's about who controls the 'conservative' and Republican message. Ron Paul is not promoting or defending either the 'social conservative', 'fiscal conservative', or 'security conservative' messages of either the establishment Republicans or the TEA Party Republicans.

Ron Paul does not have any chance - simply because he is not in the game that is being played. One has to ask if Ron Paul is only attempting to lay the political foundation for Rand Paul.

This is an important election cycle for Paul to gather future support for his son. The election machine may be too rigged for Ron to win this year but at least with him on stage it is easy to see whatp ricks the other candidates are. Ron Paul is the only one who as a representative of the people would actually do what the people want.

If three quarters of the people want medical marijuana or any other law, it is against the oath of office to do the opposite. All the other candidates have said they will oppose such legislation. This means all of the other candidates have basically said prior to the election that they will not represent the majority as is required in democracy.

It is such a basic requirment of government representatives to represent the citizens that these types of issues should never arise. The president's job is to represent the people. Every candidate besides Paul has promised on more than one occasion that they will go against 75% of the people and instead act based upon their own personal views and those of funders. If I didn't use marijuana as an example, no one could reasonably disagree with me. There is no excuse for a representative to go against three quarters of the citizens they represent. Go ahead, try and argue.

Here in Ohio, there are a lot of cross over voters, that is, we will request a Republican ballot to vote for Ron Paul. I don't think he'll win, but I feel like I've done my little 'protest'. If the majority of voters are in favor of legalizing marijuana, or same sex marriage, or any number of 'social issues, then the wishes of the people need to be followed. However, in all reality goverment of the people, for the people, by the people, hasn't been the modus operandi for quite some time.

As for the economic policies of the 1980's that you are talking about-the theory was called 'trickle-down' economics-later dubbed 'voodoo economics' because the 'benefits' promised never materialised. Small business owners hire most of the population? The largest employers in the US are WalMart, Exxon, Chevron, Conocco Phillips, General Electric, Berkshire Hathaway, GM, Bank of America and Ford (in that order). Which of those "small businesses" need the tax-breaks that you are talking about? I don't know if all us 'Extreme Liberals' are hypocrites or not, but at least you didn't call us IGNORANT.

Party politics is NOT about a candidate representing the American people. A candidate represents the party first. It has always been that way. The party promotes ALL candidates within the party. A presidential candidate is working to get Senators and Representatives elected - along with winning their own presidential contest.

The party represents the American people. Each party constructs a platform at the party convention that serves as a guideline for ALL party candidates that win election. The party platform is constructed - plank by plank - from the input provided by the delegates selected during the primaries. The local delegates are supposed to represent national, regional, and local issues. That is why primaries and delegate selection is important.

The party that wins the most contests - and becomes the party in power - will push the party platform. All elected officials will work towards enacting their party's platform. That is why Republicans vote as a block and Democrats vote as a block. The pledge to the party platform is more binding than the Norquist pledge signed by Republicans.

The idea is that delegates selected locally directs a political party on the important issues and the party works as a whole to address those locally important issues. If your particular concern or issue becomes a plank in the party platform - ALL elected members of the party have pledged to address your issue. That is considerably more powerful than just being represented by your single elected official.

That is why parties matter. That is why the drawn out process is important. That is why voting for a losing candidate is NOT a wasted vote. You may think you are simply voting for a candidate but you are also endorsing a party platform.

There are things I think Ron Paul does wrong, some ideas that he takes too far, but he also does a lot right. I would love to vote him into office. I would like to see Obama out of office. I would hate to see the liberal Republicans (those big government, in your private business but not your taxes guys that run as conservatives) take office. The GOP is losing all the sensible people to push the crazies, both in the party and in the ballot box.

Most moderates would love Paul. Some Democrats who want the social left but economic right would like him. Some Republicans that like the social left but economic right would go for him. A few from each side might sway too. He's wrong for the parties but right for the country. But that's not good enough for the left. Rather than run a candidate that only represents some of their hardline values and almost assuredly win the election, they're willing to throw their hardliners in the probably won't.

The 2012 race is going to be the same as the 2004 - everyone will be voting for "Not xxxx."

It would be interesting if, when how much was spent in each state, the reporters would also tell how much was raised in each state. Yes, it is interesting to know that Romney spent 400% times what Santorum spent on a particular state. It would also be interesting to know how much was raised in that state. If $4m was spent, but only $2m was raised, is the candidate really fiscally conservative, or are they reckless investments? Did the candidate spend $18m when $4m would have accomplished the same thing?

there is talk among all but one of the Presidential candidates, regarding the
acceptance and implementation of a new spending program which will easily
exceed 2 trillion dollars. This program has a name. It is called war with Iran.

Military action in Iran will lead
to war, for two reasons…1- Any retaliatory action Iran takes will be met with
equal action by the United States. This is escalation, which will lead to all
out war…2- Once there is an all out war, it will become necessary to institute
a change in the Iranian government. This will require occupation of Iran, as it
did for Iraq. Occupation is expensive and would require at least a decade or
more. By that time, we as a country will have gone bankrupt from the expense,
and we will have nothing to show for it.

We have, at this time, the power to
avoid this terrible future. We must rise above our pettiness and philosophical
disagreements on social issues to oppose the greater enemy who would destroy
us. We must use the power We The People have…..the power to VOTE….to elect as
our President a man who would lead our country away from this financial
Armageddon. There can be no other issue so important to the future of our
country right now than this.

I urge you all to support Dr. Ron
Paul as that leader.

I had to take 3 much lower paying jobs to support myself. My reward, my tax adviser told me to quit one of them because the tax bracket it put me in erased more income than the job earned. Meanwhile the Republicans want more tax cuts for the richest people in America while the middle class is expected to lose their tax cut. I am in the middle class. In answer to what someone said about how many people actually think Santorum should be pres- don't worry. It only looks like a lot. I've looked at the math and in every state holding a primary or a caucus, no more than 10% of the total voting-age population actually votes. So, for instance, in Vermont, there are only 435,000 or so total voters. Santorum won, as of right now, 10,230 of them. There are over 200 million voting-age people in this country. Just for a perspective. I've said this many times, but the people who show up for these things are the lunatic fringe and the people who just like to make sure they vote. And only Republicans can vote right now. But, hey, I am ALL for Santorum winning the nomination. I'm positively rooting for him.

Yes, Dems, we must reelect Obama. We must have $10/gallon gasoline. We must have the prices of goods and services go up exponentially to cover the higher costs of transportation.

We must have carbon taxes charged to the utilities so that they can pass the costs on to us.

We must have a medical system that will become more broken than it already is with millions left uninsured that were supposed to have been insured by a flawed legislation that neither Obama nor the Dems had read beforehand, and which will raise our insurance premiums once fully taking affect.

Americans must be taxed for every mile that they drive. How else will we get this economy going? We must have change that makes more than one out of every two Americans sit at or below the Federal Poverty Level. Three years since Obama took office 1 out of 2 Americans now are at or below that level.

If the above and more is the kind change that you want for America, by all means vote for Obama because he has promised to do all this and more.

He has promised to end oil subsidies without telling the American people that these very subsidies keep gasoline from reaching $10/gallon.

He has tasked part of his administration with a feasibility study on how to tax Americans for every mile that they drive. This sneaky new taxation, if enacted, will raise the costs of just about everything to compensate.

He has promised to add carbon taxes to utilities. Ready for rising utility costs?

He has signed into law what has become affectionately known as Obamacare, which will be responsible for a lot of changes to the medical system that will be detrimental in numerous ways, and will add tax burdens to many, many households starting in 2013 and 2014. Millions who were promised to receive coverage still will remain uncovered under the new system. Don't believe it? Go and read that 2,700-page legislative monstrosity and see for yourselves!

Ivan, that's because the Republicans are not trying to help the country as a whole, only their narrow band of rich friends. Lowering taxes on the wealthy ("job creators") or corporations WOULD work (unlike what liberals say) if we were not in a "demand-driven" recession.

However we ARE in a "demand-driven recession" (and many companies are filled with cash and have capital) and the Conservatives do not have the solution. Normally the "liberal" solution of giving more money to the little people would work in this situation, but their policies have also incurred so much government debt (on top of the debt that private citizens have) that things are saturated and the normal approach will not work either.

The economic situation will unfortunately take years to play out, and this is also with the specter of declining and much more expensive oil production by 2015 and a declining share of what IS being produced, due to competition from China and India for oil.

You have to actually win something to increase your coverage. Ron Paul may have some interesting ideas [and some frightening ones], but until he can demonstrate the ability to actually win a primary election, he is just slightly more interesting than somebody spouting opinions about "the government" in some bar, or on some street corner.

A little pet peeve - the current administration has just passed a bill forcing insurance companies to provide free birth control (i.e. we are paying for it to happen). Yet at the same time the IRS, which collects the revenue for the US, is so full of holes and can't get itself operating efficiently, properly or with any real accountability failing to collect billions if not trillions of dollars because of it. Yet the government is spending its time and our money on such things when bigger problems need fixing.

It truly blows my mind that people in this country still think the President is a muslim. You seriously need a new tax adviser. Tax Bracket is determined by "marginal" rate.

That is, for a single person, the tax table for "ordinary income" (W-2 wages, interest, etc.) is...

[Tax Rate Schedule X, Internal Revenue Code section 1(c)]

• 10% on taxable income from $0 to $8,700, plus
• 15% on taxable income over $8,700 to $35,350, plus
• 25% on taxable income over $35,350 to $85,650, plus
• 28% on taxable income over $85,650 to $178,650, plus
• 33% on taxable income over $178,650 to $388,350, plus
• 35% on taxable income over $388,350

It's like a upside-down layer cake, each layer gets bigger as you go up.

In other words, on your first 8,700 your are taxed at 10%, from the first dollar over that and through the next 35,350 - 8,700 (= 26,650) you are taxed at 15%.

What does NOT happen is that the first 8,700 is re-taxed at 15%.

If you earn 8,700, your marginal tax rate and actual tax rate are the same - 10% and you pay 870 in tax.

If you earn 35,350, your first 8,700 is the same 870 as above, the next 26,650 is taxed at 15% which is 3,998. Taken together, your total tax is 4,868. However this is 4,868 spread over the entire 35,350 (4,868/35,350 = 0.138), your "effective" tax rate is 13.8%, not 15%.

This fallacy "because the tax bracket it put me in erased more income than the job earned" is repeated over and over and over. From the above arithmetic, you can see you it for your yourself. "Effective tax rate" (except for the first 8,700) is ALWAYS less than the "marginal" rate.

Possible exceptions -

* Earn too much and the Earned Income Tax credit disappears

* Change the source of your income (from W-2 wages to "qualified dividends" and "capital gains") - but that is change in the type of income, and you will almost certainly pay less (ask Mitt Romney and Warren Buffett)

If you have Turbo Tax or another tax prep package, you can demonstrate this to yourself by putting in only W-2 wages and use a "standard deduction", on the front cover sheet it will tell you exactly what your "effective" tax rate is.

Vietnam? Started and grew to fullscale war under several Democrat Presidencies. We lost because we were held back at every turn and because Nixon had the cajones to go with what the American public wanted. ending the war on those terms, however, was a disaster.

Iraq? If you knew what I know you would agree that Iraq was necessary. Unfortunately, a few stupid soldiers ruined it for everybody else who were just there doing their jobs, causing us to remain involved longer than was necessary. They are, however, a sovereign power again--minus the madman dictator with asperations of nuking Israel and killing Americans for pleasure.

Afghanistan? Another case of necessary evil. Unfortunately, a few stupid and a few unthinking soldiers again ruined it for everybody by doing stupid things to anger the general population, resulting in lengthening out stay.

Before we went in to both Iraq and Afghanistan, President Bush was warned about what could happen if American soldiers did not show respect in those nations and was advised as to what to do so as to have the love of the general population. This advice was followed to the letter at first and our soldiers were greeted with kisses from many of the population when the Taliban and Saddam Hussein were toppled. Unfortunately, as I mentioned above, a few stupid and a few unthinking soldiers ruined things for everybody else and made the situation last far longer than was necessary.

I am fully aware of the situation. Are you? If you were, you would have known this. Leaving the Taliban and Saddam Hussein in full power would have spelled disaster, especially if Hussein had been allowed to pursue his nuclear aspirations. He had the yellowcake. He had the launchers. He had the scientists. If we had not gone in, it would have been fullscale, world war after Hussein nuked Israel and everybody else took sides.

For the record, there are tapes of meetings of Hussein with nuclear scientists not long before the invasion, there were accurate plans for the enriching of yellowcake and building of nuclear weapons, several soldiers were exposed to radiation on entering Saddam's under-river facility that had been sealed with concrete before the invasion. And, the yellowcake was removed from the country in secret several years ago. Nothing was or could be said about any of it until the operation was complete because the mission was Top Secret.

You can thank Bush for sending in the troops and ending Hussein's nuclear plans later. Or, you won't. It makes little difference to me in the long run but I know the true situation. The media didn't and Bush had to bite his tongue while he was insulted and called a liar by the media for years and for also having the cajones to do something about the situation that Clinton wouldn't.

In fact, if Clinton had acted we would not have had 9/11. If he had snuffed out bin Laden for the USS Cole incident, the mastermind would have not been around long enough to organize as well as he did and we never would have had need to go into Afghanistan in the first place!

I agree fully that Johnson escalated the Vietnam War (1965) and made it an American war rather than a Vietnamese war.

Thank goodness, Nixon understood the situation and got us out.

My understanding of why we lost was this - South Vietnam had a very weak (perhaps corrupt) government - it was unstable and poorly governed under Ngo Dinh Diem and remained so under each consecutive government change. The South Vietnamese military was ineffective, had a high desertion rate and throughout the war showed a marked preference for the American military to carry the load.

We were fighting both the North Vietnamese and and the insurgent Viet Cong with a constant supply coming from China. But mainly the Vietnamese were willing to stick it out no matter how many of them were killed - it has been estimated that for every million North Vietnamese,there were about fifty thousand combat deaths.

Simply,they had no place to go and they knew,in the war of attrition that we chose,they could wait us out and eventually we would have to go home.In the end,it doesn't matter how much we bombed them or put troops on the ground.

Our involvement, which began under Eisenhower, and escalated under Kennedy & Johnson, was an unavoidable outgrowth of the Cold War, and our failure to see that the Communist Block was no longer a unified force [China and the USSR actually engaged in several border skirmishes in the 1960s].

Far from a disaster, our departure from Vietnam was the right choice, both for our country and for Vietnam. Today, Vietnam is not a slavish member of the communist block, but a part of the Pacific Rim economies; you could book a flight there this afternoon and visit Ho Chi Min City as a tourist.

@amused but not distracted -- The Dixiecrats, being absurdly 'conservative', moderated the growing liberalism in the Democratic Party. Johnson, Humphrey, McGovern, and Mondale were very liberal leaders of the Democratic Party - much more liberal than today's Democrats. That far left liberalism was counterbalanced by the conservatism of the Dixiecrats. When that counterbalance was removed - the Democratic Party began loosing relevance. Carter was when the Democratic Party began to heal itself. Carter was a more moderate, more pragmatic Democrat but he could not overcome the strong liberal influence in the party. Reagan was a staunch Dixiecrat that left the Democratic Party. The influence of Reagan has led to the current condition of the Republican Party. Having lost the progressive influence in the party, the Republicans are becoming irrelevant just as the Democrats did. In order to heal itself, the Republican Party will need find a progressive leader. A Romney presidency would be much like Carter's. Romney is not strong enough to bring change to the Republican Party but he could provide an inflection point.

Of course Romney will be the nominee. Even though he's taken every position possible the Conservative's goal is to have someone more right center. dcypl - The POTUS is correct to decry the negative and corrupting SuperPac's. Our SCOTUS ruled moneyed interest are forms of free speech and legal and "just like people" as well. Ending oil subsidies will give us $10/gallon gasoline and raise the prices on all goods and services, carbon taxes will give us higher utility bills. If his directed feasibility study finds that it will be feasible for taxation by the mile, we can expect that to take a chunk out of our incomes, too. And, his Obamacare will hit families with a major tax penalty if you do not have insurance meeting the minimum government standard. Rates are set to climb as well to help keep the insurance companies solvent as their costs rise, not to mention the coming waiting lists for specialists and their services. Boy Howdy! I sure am looking forward to waiting 6 months to a year for an MRI to rule out cancer--should it come my way, that is.

So all things considered, we should see the manufacturing jobs recovery(albeit slowly) as a positive for the foreseeable future.

Lastly, taxes are the cost for a civilized society. The debt we find ourselves in would have been less if the tax rates on the rich for the last 10 years hadn't been reduced. Works the same way ongoing, raise their taxes. When the ongoing recovery improves sufficiently, then taxes may need to be raised on the middle class. I don't see anyway around that.

Agreed- once you raise them leave them alone. No lowering them bc there will always be something else they can be used for, education ( can always use more money), roads( always being worn out), disaster recovery (hello acts of god), veterans assistance (they deserve the best we can give them), etc.

You needn't bother to worry about gas prices going down, the oil companies and OPEC will always do their utmost to keep them high, exactly where they like them, of course occasionally they will begrudgingly allow small decreases so all economies can catch their breath before ratcheting up the price again.

What happened, he changed his mind on my three biggest reasons for voting for him, they are gone, just poof, bye bye and he said we must do anything and everything within our power to bring back the manufacturing jobs, so far in 3 years all he has done is condemn the companies for not paying their fair taxes, I want jobs now taxes later.

I find there are major holes in Ron Pauls theories. Take this recent statement that there should not be a FEMA, and the tornado victims should fend for themselves, have insurance.

However, even with insurance, it is going to take a long time for those people to get back on their feet and they will need help in the mean time. So what you just let people freeze to death after a natural disaster?

Which leads me to my second issue with him "don't live in disaster areas." Okay so west coast is off because of Tsunamis, the east coast is out because of hurricanes. The midwest is out because of tornadoes, anyone near woods or a forest is out because of wildfires. Near rivers is out because of floods, near fault lines is out because of earth quakes. Just where is he wanting people to live?!

On the medical side, he thinks that government should have no involvement. People have to pay for it themselves. That is all well and good until you find people who can't afford it or they opt not to have it because they are healthy, but then something happens and they need extensive medical care. Do you just let a 25 year old die? His answer was no...so who pays for it?

Actually, you have that wrong. While it is true that Republicans love money, they also want the economy to do well so that they can make more money.

As with Carter going into the '80 election, these will be Obama's debates to lose.

the tax plan isn't what sunk this economy. Legislation signed into law by Carter and Clinton, enforced by Janet Reno with the help of Obama's now-defunct ACORN, laid the foundation for the failure of the economy, the last nails being driven into that coffin by Democrats in control of Congress for the last two years of Bush's administration. Congress held the purse strings of America and repeatedly ignored Bush's warnings about Fannie and Freddie getting too big for their britches. The rest is history but Bush gets all the blame.

You want to see real economic failure? Give Obama what he wants by voting him a second term and watch what he does to make the economy fail with his taxation schemes I have mentioned above when America, not learning from their previous mistakes, gives Congress to the Democrats again.

I am still undecided. I am trying to piece together facts which is kinda hard to on news sites. Can you explain to me why it is so imperative to you that we vote for Ron Paul? I have have already decided not vote for Santorum. I still don't know who Romney is.

Watched Romney give his speech in Ma last night. He said he would cut every one s taxes 20% across the board in the first year, Eliminate the death tax, Cut corporate taxes, De-regulate all so-called job creating businesses,eliminate Obama care, wants to confront Iran, including the use of force, then in an astonishing display of unreality, he says he will balance the budget in his first year in office. Mitt-do you believe in anything except desperately wanting to be elected?
