President Barack Obama, turning his political sights on snowy New Hampshire, demanded that Congress eliminate oil and gas company subsidies that he called an outrageous government "giveaway." Though politically a long shot, the White House believes the idea resonates at a time of high gasoline prices.
"Let's put every single member of Congress on record: you can stand with oil companies or you can stand up for the American people," Obama said.

Obama has repeatedly called for an end to about $4 billion in annual tax breaks and subsidies for oil and gas companies, government support that Obama has said is unwarranted at a time of burgeoning profits and rising domestic production.
"It's outrageous. It's inexcusable. I'm asking Congress: eliminate this oil industry giveaway right away," he said.
It was Obama's latest and most direct appeal to Congress to act on the tax breaks, and an administration official said the White House expects Congress to soon take up a measure ending some subsidies. The official requested anonymity to avoid speaking publicly without authorization.
Republican presidential contenders and GOP leaders in Congress denounced the idea and called on Obama to take further steps to expand oil production in the United States.

New Hampshire residents supporting Obama must love paying high gas prices which, if this clown gets re-elected, are here to stay. http://news.yahoo.com/energy-secretary-chu-admits-administration-ok-high-gas-193900713.html
I hope the rest of the country doesn't take the same "stupid" pill.
How is the President "shoring up" his support in NH- A waiver from participating in Obamacare perhaps? A couple of "green" companies (owned by friends of course) need a cool $500m? Exemption from "No child left behind"? I can't wait to hear.....
High gas prices are not his fault but you repubs think everything is his fault
OBAMA/BIDEN 2012!
Of course the high gas prices are not Obama's fault, blame Bush. None of the Obama blind supporters can see the truth, the weak dollar is the major reason gas prices are soaring. The more money we print, the weaker the dollar worldwide. Obama is spending this country into oblivion. He promised to cut the deficit in half in his first term but instead he has more then doubled it.
Obama if given a second term is on pace to add more to our national debt then all previous president's COMBINED. At the rate we are borrowing and printing money out of thin air, a sheet of toilet paper will soon be worth more then the dollar. To say Obama has nothing to do with the price of gas is as insane as his lack of fiscal restraint.
"On the road again" !!!
Not to "shore up" but "fill up" the swamp.
I can hardly wait for the "real" campaign to start, then we will be swamped with "swamp" material coming from the Left. Nothing new here.
You are the STUPID one. Republicans caused this Recession with their tax cut borrow and spend philosophy; doubling the national debt. There would be NO national debt today if the last Clinton Budget had been left in place.
Rick- lost causes. They think that because they have a wallet full of dollars (and a big printing press) that the money actually has value. They don't realize that government debt with nothing behind it leads to default. They also believe that as long as your credit card company extends you more credit that you have money. Yeah, that'll work.
obama thanks for the $4.00 gas, now will tell me where I can find a windmill to plug my car into???
The part I like the most is when someone says if the Clinton budget had been left in place there would be no national debt. I hate to break the news but the national debt actually increased under Clinton. That same poster said Bush doubled the national debt, and again that was not the case. Did he over spend, yes, but nowhere near the level Obama has ratcheted up the spending.
But you keep up with your revisionist history if that is what keeps you warm at night. I happen to think there is more then enough blame to go around Washington, and neither the Democrats or the Republicans can pass the smell test. History is going to treat Obama and Congress for that matter very harshly, and it will be well deserved. The total lack of any fiscal responsibility and the shear magnitude of the abuse going on in Washington right now, does not more then demonstrate a total lack of concern for the health of this nation. There is simply no excuse for it, and it should not be supported by anyone for any reason.
NH doesn't support Obama. He will not win here in Nov.
How quickly we forget that gas and oil prices were MUCH higher while Bush was in office.
Barry, thanks for screwing up traffic on Amherst St. today! Why didn't you just stay in Washington? We don't want to hear your phony rhetoric here in New Hampshire in your pathetic effort to further divide this country.
Your stance to constantly vilify U.S. corporations is sad indeed. For political points you'll scream about taking away $4 billion in subsidies for U.S. oil companies while you gave $2 billion to Brazil's oil industry with a promise of up to $8 billion more. Like most of what you've done, it doesn't make sense and it doesn't help the American people, American companies, nor create American jobs.
Obama, you are one and done! New Hampshire won't support you in November! Enjoy your last few months in the White House! Better put your order in for that Chevy Volt because you'll be driving yourself around come January 2013.
First what subsidies are going to be eliminated; you can not tax their foreign profits, they are all foreign corporations, the only other tax breaks have to do with drilling costs in the U.S., let us first see what he wants to eliminate; with the dollar falling to record low's, expect at least 5 dollar a gallon by summer; what should be eliminated is the 75 cts a gallon extra tax on diesel fuel, put there by GM, during the last oil shortage , since people were buying diesel cars, and no American car company was producing a diesel car, adds a lot to shipping costs, which are all paid by the consumer.
Skiing 111 you are correct gas prices did spike when Bush was in office, right after hurricane Katrina. What you failed to mention is the prices were under $2.00 per gallon when Obama took office. Demand is down and supplies are up, how does that equal higher prices? Obama wants high gas prices so alternative energy will be more competitive. He rides around in 1.1 million dollar buses (2 of then made in Canada) but he has himself and the buses flown to the areas he plans to visit. Then he tells us to tighten up our belts and do more with less!!! If you thought 8 years of Bush was bad just multiply Obama by 10!
Sounds like the President is making a call for fiscal 'conservatism'. The new 'conservatives' have been demanding the government cut spending - because - you cannot spend more than tax revenues.
So why have the conservative deficit hawks not 'fixed' this already????
?
skiing1
What the hell are you smoking??? The day Bush left office, gas averaged $1.89/gal. Do you libs think that you can get by with making up this kind of crap just to protect your messiah from his miserable record of failure?
Obama is like a unsupervised teenage girl in a shopping mall with a credit card.If no one does something about obamas spending spree, daddy(We the people)is going to get angry.
I've read a lot of stupidity on these posts in the past but I think this one demonstrates the highest level of ignorant comments yet.
I'll take that last one on for a second. Where are all the morons who jumped up and down screaming when Bush was in office that the high prices were because of Bush? Now they're saying that the high prices have nothing to do with barack. Make up your panty waste liberal minds. You CAN NOT have it both ways, so if it was Bush's fault then it's baracks fault now. The only difference is that the country is dying right now and barack is going to sit on high like the elitist he is, while watching the masses tear themselves apart and he will simply fiddle while the country burns. If you don't believe me then you haven't done your homework on someone you voted for and you don't know barack.
Lastly, yes...every problem in the world is baracks fault. Rising oil prices, other countries laughing at us, unemployment, low house prices, 15 T debt, Davy Jones death, Whitney Houston's drug habit, Gypsy moth, emerald ash borer, beer prices, giving false respect to radical muslims and there comic book known as the koran, poor posture among teenage girls, teenage pregnancy, mexican drug cartel murders, illegal aliens, threat of galactic alien invasions, the recent tornadoes and school shootings, Joy Behar's show getting cancelled, katherine sebelius's lack of pigmentation, harry reids vitamin deficiency and non-existent personality, the stick in nancy pelosi's rear-end, and last but not least...the fact that if he's in for another four years the country left behind will even make liberals look and ask; what the hell did we do?
Liberals; Enjoy the whole ignorance is bliss thing, sometimes I wish I could be as blind and foolish but my brain just doesn't work that way.
Ummm, Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005 and oil/gas prices peaked in 2008... try again.
While it is true that when Bush left office the cost of gas was cheaper, I merely stated a fact that we had much high prices while Bush was in office. Which, by the way, gas and oil prices being higher is often a sign that the economy is ding better.
Please people, if you are going to comment, educate yourselves first.
@spider-737231 -- National average price for gas reached $4.12 during the summer of 2008 - during the presidential campaign. Gas prices fell as it became clear that Obama would be elected.
As the Republican primary campaign continues - gas prices are rising. The more true 'conservative' political talking points are highlighted during the Republican primary - the more gas prices rise.
As the Republican candidates call for more military intervention in the Middle East - as Republicans demand a stronger military - as Republican candidates call for more austerity - as Republican candidates push religion instead of economics - gas prices rise.
Since Congress is the entity that decides how money is spent, please explain how it is that overspending beyond revenues is "Obama's fault"?
YES! YES! YES, Mr. President!
That's the way to cut spending where it NEEDS to be cut. Take from the greedy and give it to the needy!
YES!
Yeah, let's put everybody on record. Just say NO to welfare! CORPORATE WELFARE!
I'm proud to call you my President, you are doing a great job.
Well, the RWNJ's said they wanted to reduce spending, bring down the deficit and they're always in favor of doing so by cutting "welfare". Well ditto-heads, there it is. He's cutting Federal spending and taking a swipe at corporate welfare.
TAKING IT FROM THE GREEDY AND GIVING IT TO THE NEEDY! I think Jesus would approve!
Obama/Biden 2012
Don't the subsidies reduce the price of gas? Am I missing something?
Unlike Mitt, whose plan would take from the needy and give it to the greedy.
Shame on you Mitt. Shame.
Obama/Biden 2012
This sounds like he's reaching out to the other side of the aisle - those of us who are taxpayers. This should reduce the taxes required to be paid by me and increase teh gasoline prices paid by his constituency. Of course, he may have plans to increase government rebates to nontaxpayers...
Colorado-man, there are only two billion per year involved in the subsidies. That might make ten cents difference in your yearly taxes, when you consider the government budget projections are four TRILLION. This bs is election fluff for the masses who have been taught to hate the oil companies by a liberal media going along with Obama's re-election flimflam campaign. It really doesn't matter to you or me, in the pocket book, but it is being used as propaganda. I don't, necessarily agree with the subsidies, but they truly make no difference, monetarily, but they do make good campaign fodder.
It is simple, Oil companies make more money when prices are higher. Record profits, even with years of record spills. Who do the oil companies what to be elected? Which party would benefit them the most? Hmmm, they seem to spend more on lobbying with the Republicans than paying in taxes. So they are betting on a Republican win to increase their profits. Even the Oil companies know that republicans influence will drive oil prices higher than the democrats.
Imagine if the anxiety over Iran grows stronger, they will be able to raise their prices, simply because it might cause supply problems. Bingo! Oil prices go to 6-8 dollars a gallon. Even though these companies could survive selling for 2 dollars a gallon.
If you don't think they are out for their own profits, then you are a fool.
@Obama Lies
Where were you and the rest of the RWNJs during DUH-bya's second term when gas prices were over $4 a gallon, much higher than they are now? I don't remember hearing republCONS blame THEIR guy. You know why? Because the POTUS has VERY LITTLE control over gas prices. There is a little something called OPEC which determines the price of a barrel of oil and then, of course, there are the speculators on Wall Street who, because they are not adequately regulated, are allowed to make millions by, in essence, price gouging. If you didn't know this, there is also this little thing called "the google" which you can use on "the Internet machine" to learn the facts about a particular subject before you comment on something that you clearly have no clue about.
Considering it is quite obvious that you are just repeating the "news" (aka republiCLOWN talking points) you saw on Faux "News" (which is DEFINITELY NOT an ACTUAL NEWS organization; it is a propaganda machine for the ever more radical reTHUGlican party), you should REALLY learn to utilize "the google" on the "Internet machine" to find out what is REALLY going on in our country. There are reports that CLEARLY show that Faux "News" viewers are LESS informed than people who don't watch ANY news broadcasts at all! It never ceases to amaze me that you righties believe every word that comes out of the mouth of Faux "News" reporters, right-wing radio talkers, and conservative bloggers without verifying the reports. It seems to me that the vast majority of republiCANTS are cult-like in their unquestioning loyalty to the likes of conspiracy theorist Glenn Beck, the dopester Rush Lame-balls, and O'Reilly, Hannity, and the rest of the gasbags at Faux "News". It's as if you SHEEPLE believe that everything they say was taken straight out of the New Testament, when in reality the vast majority of their "fair and balanced" reporting is at least a distortion of the facts, if not an outright LIE.
Dude, you SERIOUSLY need to change the channel or turn off your TV before you OD on the Kool-Aid they are serving over at Faux "News"
Gas prices are primarily determined by speculators of oil futures. To ignore this fact is to be uninformed. In addition, Chu's quote was from 2008 and since then domestic oil production gas been higher than any other time for the last 40 years or so. Look at the people sucking on the "pundit prep list" teats. No sitting president has the ability to drive the price of gasoline up or down dramatically (ignoring the miniscule effect that the strategic oil reserves have).
The oil industry is recording record profits EVERY quarter for the last 5-6 years so WHY do they need $4 billion in subsidies?
Skip - Bro...you have some serious cajones saying the pres "is doing a great job, I'm proud to call him my president." You are becoming a small majority my friend. BO is absolutely tanking right now. I'm absolutely perplexed how someone could think this guy is doing a great job? I know you like him, but please tell me you're not that stupid that you can't see through his campaign BS? Man Skip you need some therapy bro.
dasvet - your math doesn't work. And regarless of the magnitudes, other taxpayers' (non-oil subsidy recipients) amounts should go down and oil prices should (and ultimately gasoline) rise. My taxes could be kept the same (or even rise) if,as I mentioned, there is some additional subsidy to a large portion of BHO's constituency, the non-taxpayers.
I love how all the right wing idiots rant and rail against using any money at all to help American citizens. Whether it be social safety nets, education, infrastructure or whatever. The do nothing congress even obstructed efforts to pay for the medical costs of 9-11 first responders and veteran's benefits.
But try to take away BILLIONS a year in welfare for oil companies and watch out, they get rabid!
Subsidies were intended for new industries and for struggling industries. Not the most profitable industries on the planet, who are having record years of profits the last 3 years while all of us SUFFER for their increased wealth.
They don't need handouts. And you all damn well know it. Whatever parroted talking points you regurgitate out here you have to know that.
Skip #1.22; It is ok to give $1,182 billion away to green companies that support Obama right. How about that for corporate welfare. Once again do as I say not as we Lib's do; right.
Gil-2872519
Wake up. No they don't. They just add to the profit. The global manipulated "free F8cking" market determines prices. To insinuate that oil is "cost based" or somehow cheaper if we get it here is ridiculous at best.
Bill1488
We subsidize things to encourage industries that we need when free market forces aren't working fast enough for our national interests. Green companies fall directly into that category. The use of oil costs us dearly and it's total cost to the U.S. now and in the future is not reflected in the pump prices... and the prices are held artificially low to thwart competition from alternate energy sources. Use your brain, bud.
Go Obama! The issue, the time, the reason, and the logic are all right on. Kick some butt!
Skip...good on you, it ain't cahones it is just recognition of the facts....Lets see Stock Market - Up, Unemployment - down, 1 Unfunded War - done and another winding down, Corporate Giveaways - just gettin started on that (I thought you Repubs want a Free Market economy with no Government intervention.....oh sorry only where it actually suits you), No New Unfunded Wars started, and I still get to keep my gun......all in all considering the very low base that this administration started from (Thanks to fantastic work of the last group of clowns) looks like they are doing a pretty fair job, despite how hard the shallow end of the gene pool in Congress is trying to prevent any inclining of improvement.
Why is it that you Repubs have no problem giving money away to any global conglomerate, Military Industrial Complex carpetbagger or Pyramid Scheme Shyster that puts it's hand out but the very idea of helping the less fortunate people in your own country with a bit medical insurance, food stamps, you know charity.....is repulsive to you and you rant and rave and carry on like stuck pigs. Open your eyes!!!!
For God's sake; what is so wrong about removing subsidies for oil??? I mean, come on. The oil companies are raking in billions in profits from our gas money; don't you think at the very least we can keep them from taking any of our tax money??? And to all those who say that Obama is spending this nation out of control, where the @!$%# were you 30 years ago??? Reagan tripled the national debt by spending too much on defense and led the way for voodoo economics to come in to balloon our debt and destroy our economy. Bush DOUBLED the debt from roughly $5.5 trillion to over $11 trillion and handed Obama a chaotic economy and a $1.2 trillion deficit. What did you expect Obama to do??? Trim the budget??? He would of worsened the recession and increased our debt EVEN FASTER. And while you say that Bush only doubled the debt in 8 years while Obama will in 4, you have to realize that Obama had no choice. He couldn't cut spending or raise taxes in the middle of the recession OR the fragile economy unless he thought that a quick death was preferable to a slow recovery. And in case you haven't notice, most of the deficit arises because of the lack of revenue and increase in automatic spending caused by the recession and the fiscally irresponsible policies of the Bush administration.
And Bill, there is no proof that Obama is acting like a crony capitalist. Plus the green industry is new and has potential; that is why you give subsidies to new and struggling industries. The green industry is relatively new and is struggling under the recession and foreign competition; subsidies will help it grow. The oil industry is already developed, isn't in trouble as oil is a necessity, and has no need of those $4 billion in subsidies.
Oh and right wing wac, how exactly are other countries laughing at us??? Because we used reasonable tactics and intelligence instead of an all-out offensive to take down our enemies??? Because we engage in diplomacy BEFORE blowing the hell out of our rivals??? Because we try to use nonmilitary tactics in order to spare this nation another costly and unnecessary war??? Frankly, I think the world has come to respect America a bit more under Obama than under Bush. Bush antagonized EVERYBODY; even our allies in Britain. Obama is a bit more practical; and I don't see how he pulled the rug out of Israel. And frankly, I am tired of always having to back them up financially and diplomatically. I am not anti-Israeli, but we are just putting our eggs in the one Israeli basket. Seems like we should encourage the Israelis to negotiate with the Palestinians and stop supporting everything they do.
OBAMA BIDEN 2012
DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS 2012
DEATH TO THE FASCIST RIGHT-WING GOP 2012
Perhaps the POTUS has nothing to do with gas prices....but why are you Dems crying foul on this issue when Obama, Pelosi, and all the other Dems were doing the exact same thing to Bush 4 yrs ago? All the Dems kept complaining that Bush wasn't doing enough to lower the price at the pump and now they find themselves in the same situation....Dem hypocrisy, as usual!!!!!!!!!
jwilson - #1.37 says it all. The libs are the ultimate hyprocrites.
Uh, sorry Mr President....dictators "demand"; presidents "request" Congress. Your superiority complex is your friggin problem!
Come on you righties I thought you were all for a free market capitalist economy? And there you go blaming the POTUS for the gas prices when your wall street scum buddy commodity speculaters are driving up the price of oil based on all the fear mongering the right wing extremists are peddling about attacking Iran and further disrupting the oil markets. All this while demand is at 1997 levels and domestic production is at the highest levels in the last 10 years. When are you guys going to stop lying and spreading your horse crap all over the place? Anybody who understands the oil markets knows your just blowing smoke(again). And there you are smugly very quiet over the fact that your gop clowns in our government continue to insist on giving the oil corporations hundreds of billions of dollars in tax subsidies(entitlements) while they continue to reap record profits and continue to rape the american public. So for gods sake already make up your minds, either you want free capitalist economy where oil prices are going to manipulated by wall street and war monger extremists or a regulated market where it's illegal for the commodity speculators to manipulate markets this way??? Cause you can't have it both ways folks.
Query No 2 Mr. Wilson.....why were ya'll screaming "it isn't the Presidents fault he doesn't control gas prices" when they were going through the roof during the Bush/Cheney/Military Industrial Complex Administration years...but now point the finger at the current Admin (even though you now admit, and the GOP Spin machine is not going to like that you might get a letter for not sticking with the standard Karl Rove Propaganda line, that the Pres has nothing to do with gas prices) ..... that seems to be as much hypocrisy on Repub side as is coming from the current Demo side.
Oil and resultanat gas prices are controlled by Big Oil they want a bit more profit they squeeze a bit, do some war mongering, blow up an oil rig, get a real "shortage" going then raise the price....before to long there seems to be plenty of gas and oil.....but the price doesn't ever go back down to the mean levels they were at prior to the "panic"....it's called price manipulation and the only way to stop it is us to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels or some other drastic government control measures which probably wouldn't work.
But giving the Big Oil handouts from the tax coffers.....is kin to giving the inmates the keys to gun cabinet.
Nope, it just goes to fatten the profit margin of the oil companies - which have been setting record profits for over a decade. The subsidies don't go to the consumers, it goes to the oil company executives and shareholders.
Now, there are some nations that have been subsidizing the sales price of gasoline, mainly nations getting plenty of oil profits, but that isn't happening in the US, it would be considered "socialism" by the conservatives.
Obama's disdain for this country is without question. This anti-American Marxist is speeding up his destruction of America because he can see the writing on the wall that he, and his fellow comrades, only have a short time left
spider-737231
...just doesn't know "his place", does he? Nothing pisses off the right more than a man "like him" acting all high and mighty and demanding and sh!t. Just sticks right in your craw, don't it!?!?
It's pretty hilarious to watch the Left contort themselves on the meaning of the word "subsidy". They actually seem to believe that allowing someone to keep more of the money they *earn* rather than having it confiscated away by the government through taxes is a 'subsidy'. Meanwhile, giving money to people who haven't earned it and continually leech off the system? Oh no, that's not a 'subsidy' that's a 'right' and 'entitlement'. All of it seems to stem from the delusion that wealth is not privately owned, but somehow magically shared by everyone collectively that the government administers in beneficent 'efficient' manner.
NO Juicy, I'm intelligent and well-informed. It is you, podna, who needs to stop listening to Fox News propaganda and Rush Limbaugh and look at the real facts.
Yank said it best, read his post and learn something.
Obama/Biden 2012
dasvet... the point is why do we the tax payer have to subsidize a THRIVING and MASSIVELY profitable industry.
Obama will win,,,,democrats will have supermajority,,,,America will see the lies and hypocrisy of the far right for what it is,,,pure evil and greed,,,end of story,,,
I certainly hope you're correct Omega1
Obama did win in 2008...democrats had a supermajority.. America saw the hypocrisy of the far left for what it is.... liars! America shellacked them in 2010. America will finish the shellacking in 2012...end of story.
repubs filibustered everything and you know it! also high jaked the healthcare bill to make changes so it doesn't fix the real problems then voted against it. then put in the mandate and now saying unconstitutional you people are crazy!
anamericanidiot
The republicans had nothing to do with the healthcare POS and you know it. If the republicans could have filibustered everything we wouldn't have the health care POS and you know it. Libs are crazy.
Jack A** (since you are now calling names) you cannot rewrite history try as you might. everything I said is the truth fact check it or continue to eat fox news BS
obama thanks for the $4.00 gas, now can you tell me where I can find a windmill to plug into????
Progressive/liberals are all a bunch of whiners and want to stop free speech. My comment 2.2 was the most voted on comment and you need to collapse it because it is too true for you??? Get a life!!!
If you want to read a collapsed comment just click on the word "collapsed".
Yep 5 dollar gas just isnt enough for him, what does he want us to pay this summer?? 10, 15 dollars per gallon? Judging from the liberal posts on the vine, they wont be happy until we are paying Euro prices for gas..
How quickly people forget that gas and oil prices were MUCH higher at a time when Bush was in office.
Well, I agree in principal that the oil and gas companies don't need gov subsidies, but the problem is, if the government ends them, the oil and gas companies aren't going to eat the cost they are going to pass the difference on to consumers. The last thing our struggling economic recovery needs right now is higher gas prices.
Although, in fairness, gas prices are going to go up anyways...
What we really need to do is end commodity speculation.
Why wasn't subsidies a top priority to eliminate from day one? Why hasn't the Three Branches of Government slashed their pay? whatever.
Your right skiing111 - I completely forgot about that time under Bush when gas was pushing $4.00, expected to rise to $5.00 by the summer.
What year and month was that again?
Most money I have ever paid for a gallon of gas in my life was 4.10 per gallon, it was right outside of Taft CA and it was about 3 months ago. Who was president 3 months ago? I can't seem to remember...
redwizard, they really cannot pass along the costs to consumers because oil and gas are commodities. The market sets the price.
Though you are correct on commodity speculation being the real cause. The speculators drive up the cost intentionally. Think about it... wouldn't you pay an extra 20 bucks per tank if it meant you could make millions or billions even?

Huh...?
What do the GOP amendments to this Senate health care bill actually say?
By Christopher Beam|
Posted Thursday, July 16, 2009
That said, some context: Of the 788 amendments filed, 67 came from Democrats and 721 from Republicans. (That disparity drew jeers that Republicans were trying to slow things down. Another explanation may be that they offered so many so they could later claim—as they are now, in fact, claiming—that most of their suggestions went unheeded.) Only 197 amendments were passed in the end—36 from Democrats and 161 from Republicans. And of those 161 GOP amendments, Senate Republicans classify 29 as substantive and 132 as technical.

redwizard, you have a pretty short memory. Oil hit almost 150 per barrel in July of 2008 and gas prices were up over 4.50. Look it up if you don't believe me.
skiing111,
Since WHEN can't a business pass on a rate/price hike?!! You have got to be trying to b.s. people!
Richard, Because it's a commodity. The market sets the price. Do research before you post. Learn how commodities work.
@Redwizard000
The highest "average" gas price was around June/July of 2008 and it was 4.18. It reached 4.58 in California during that time. Right now the highest is 4.33 and we're not counting inflation, taxation and other miscellaneous factors that have pushed the price higher just in the past five years.
You can find the prices I found on gasbuddy.com.
I remember paying 4+ a gallon in North Carolina around that time with a 21 gallon tank.
It is incorrect to state that ending the subsidies somehow will increase the fuel costs. These are largely tax benefits - breaks that the companies realize on their triple-net bottom lines. The impact will be upon net profits, which are, as the White House correctly observed, at all-time highs.
Also, changes in commodity market rules made quite a long time ago, under Bush II, made it possible for commodity speculators to become the driving factor in crude oil prices. Before, never more than 40% of commodity transactions were allowed to investors who were not end-users - that is, refineries or fuel companies and airlines, etc. That ratio has since reversed, and the effect has been to peg crude prices at artificially-high rates.
It is similarly a myth that completing the Canada-US oil pipeline will substantially influence supply, and thus ultimately fuel prices, in the U.S. A report a few days ago showed that the Keystone pipeline will actually cause rates to rise in the upper Midwest and Rocky Mountain states, where at the moment there is a glut on the market. Further, at its Gulf of Mexico terminus, the pipeline will primarily enable marketers to load tankers and send that production off to other parts of the world to obtain maximum price for the crude.
Finally, in the middle of the Bush years, in Florida I one time was paying well over $4.50 per gallon for gasoline. There was almost a 12-month period when the average price for fuel nationwide was well above $4. This was partly an aftereffect of hurricanes that reduced Gulf of Mexico refinery output, as well as commodity market reaction to the Bush Administration's adventures in the Middle East.
Historical figures are available from the Lundberg Letter website.
redwizard, consumer reports has an article on what gas prices were in July of 2008. CA had an average price of 4.52 for a gallon of Regular gasoline. Not sure if this site will let me paste the link but here goes...
Oh, and a bit of a PS - American taxpayers are subsidizing the oil and gas companies in more ways than the benefits noted above. The U.S. actually owns or controls most of the areas where fossil fuels are extracted. Prices for rights to drill on those lands, or royalties on the production, are so low it's a travesty. The nation itself is heavily subsidizing fossil fuel extraction.
I don't agree with Obama very much, but the oil and gas subsidies are bull crap. Every other industry uses part of their profits for research and development (exploration for the oil industry). With record profits and astronomical salaries for the CEOs, the oil companies have plenty of money for exploration. I split with the republicans on this issue. There isn't any reason for the oil companies to be on government welfare.
John A... I believe it was Bernie Sanders from VT that displayed a chart on the senate floor that showed not only do oil companies not pay any income tax on their profits, but they also received a REFUND based on the taxes paid to other countries where they operate. I am sure you can find video of it online.
props to Realist for thinking outside the box. Glad to see there are still some other people who can view each topic independently.
It reached $5.00 under GW.
http://gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx
Set the chart to 6 years and look at 2008, then say gas is at an all time high.
Then enable the crude oil price and see the difference in prices.
Gas prices are getting close to 2008 levels but crude oil is still about 40-50 a barrel lower, whys that do you think?
Put some more air in your tires, I must admit BO is doing everything he can to help.
moheeheeko, simple answer on that. Fed and state governments lowered the gas taxes in 2008 to help with the cost of gas. That is the reason for the discrepancy.
Im well aware, and Big oil is pocketing the difference.
I can't wait to see which Congress members bankrolled by the oil companies come out swinging against this one.
no Moheeheeko, I mean the reason the reason crude prices are $40 cheaper now but Gasoline is getting somewhat nearer to 2008 prices is because the gasoline taxes you pay at the pump were rolled back to help consumers. Otherwise the 2008 per gallon prices would have been MUCH higher. I am not referring to the corporate taxes Bush eliminated in 2007. Which, by the way, he waited until the end of his presidency to do, because he knew it would help to crush the bottom line for the country.
anamerican-"Jack A** (since you are now calling names)"
Actually, the Dumbocrats are the a$$e$.After all,you guys chose the donkey to be your symbolic animal.
@ Gary K-2697770 and Sam - President Obama, as well any other previous president, has no control over the price of gas. This is a direct function of the oil and gas speculators and the free market coupled with their
fears about events that may or may not happen in the Middle East. On the other side of that price increases you have the big oil companies exporting oil to other countries where they can make larger profits. This in turn manipulates supply and the price of gas. They are also buying leases for land in the Gulf of Mexico and other locales, then sitting on that land instead of drilling, which also manipulates supply and the price of gas. Another factor to consider, you hear lots of talk about heading to war with Iran which would mean we have two main war zones - Afghanistan. That said, Obama's actions in the Middle East can certainly influence oil speculators. Those speculators will probably - and rightly so – get nervous about what will happen to those reserves. Toss in the Canadian Pipeline…that is foreign oil. May run through our country with minimal and short term help to the American people on the job front (the pipe line itself is pretty much outsourced to India for production) but bottom line it's foreign oil and Canada will have the right to charge the going price. No cut for us there either.
Think you shall find this of interest as well. Feb 24, 2012
http://thinkprogress.org/green/2012/02/24/432059/oil-lobby-says-obamas-call-to-end-big-oil-handouts-is-discriminatory/
The oil lobby American Petroleum Institute weighed in on President Obama's corporate tax reform that
closes an array of tax loopholes, including $4 billion in subsidies for the oil industry. Not surprisingly, API is unhappy. API President Jack Gerard played victim, calling the plan "discriminatory" against an industry that "receives not one subsidy": One day after the Obama administration unveiled a sweeping corporate tax reform plan, the oil and gas industry's top lobbyist went on the attack against the president's proposal.
Calling it "discriminatory," Jack Gerard, president and CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, said the administration's outline was more of a "Swiss cheese approach that we're trying to get rid of in this country." "The industry receives not one subsidy," Gerard claimed. "It takes tax deductions the same or similar to what all other American companies get to recover their costs of doing business."
Here's a fact for Gerard: tax deductions are subsidies, as API has previously admitted. In one API
document, the organization discussed "subsidies for alternative fuels" including "preferential tax treatment."
Here's another fact: the industry receives a whopping $7 billion in tax breaks each year.
Gerard also claimed big oil pays one of the highest effective tax rates, and yet Exxon Mobil – the most
profitable oil company – paid a 17.6 percent federal effective tax, lower than the average American. The company paid zero taxes to the federal government in 2009. The oil industry is fighting to keep its handouts, despite posting record-breaking profits of $137 billion in 2011.
So far, it seems like it's American families who are being discriminated against, in favor of Big Oil.
Bottom line - The President gets a yes or no (veto) vote on the budget. Anything else is up to Congress, hence he directs his comments to Congress and gets blamed for the deficit at the same time.
Where I live regular gas is $4.10 a gallon and I am sure it will be going up. Lets see who has been in charge for the past three years? Not Bush!
@stull - please read my post above yours - President Obama, as well any other previous president, has no control over the price of gas.
Need to check your dates - Bush years - 2008 - gas was close to $5.00 per gallon in some states. Correction - that Bush - the oil man - family has always been in the business.
As for Gingrich and his plan for $2.50 per gallon - also - no control. He's blowing smoke - he does that a lot.
Non Political Question..............When oil was 150 a barrel, gas was about $4.00 to $4.25 a gallon. Now oil is 110, gas is around $4.00 a gallon. What is different in the process now that the price formula has changed has changed ? Seems when oil goes up they say gas has to go up because of the price of oil ( makes sense ) so why does gas go up a different amount now than it did before ? Based on the previous formula, oil goes to $150 bbl, gas will now go to $6 + a gallon ? Why ? Also, when we have cold weather the price of heating oil goes up and they always say it is because of "unexpected" demand. Now we had a crazy warm winter and fuel oil storage tanks are filled to the top, but fuel oil prices still keep going up even though demand is way less than "expected".
My point was and is that there are many on here blaming Bush or the Bush years for our past gas prices. All I was pointing out is Bush is not in charge now. Gas is $4.10 a gallon for reg unleaded where I live and I am sure it will go up, so should I be like many the posters on here and blame the President? If so I am going to point my finger at our current President and not our past.
Thank you!
JH, Republican's were the ones that wanted the Individual Mandate. This is a part of the HCR Act that a good deal of Americans are against. What americanpatriot said is true:
http://www.usnews.com/opinion/blogs/laura-chapin/2010/12/17/republicans-are-hypocrites-on-healthcare-invidual-mandate
You all aware we now export oil now because we do not need what we produce? Why would that same company who sell its product for more money but be forced by the Obama / GOP saying to sell it Americans for $2.50? And we know giving money now would only lower your gas by a few pennies. So we do not have to help them any more they are doing just fine. In Alberta Canada where they sell us and others fuel by a higher rate than we do. Because the companies can because of WORLD demand.
When will this country start to understand, we NEED to GO GREEN!!! It only makes sense! Why, why, why do Republican's think going Green is bad??? One side of the mouth say's we need to get out of the middle east, while the other say's, "no need to conserve energy". Nothing to see here...move along....
Jo-An
We have been going green now for 30 plus years. Why, why, why, do democrats think that is the one and only direction to go? Republicans have been saying we need to increase our own domestic oil production to get us out of the middle east. Why do the democrats fight that? This country will always need oil. We will never make it on battery power or wind power alone. The progressive/liberal environmentalists need to understand that fact.
Maybe because "Going Green" is costing the taxpayers BILLIONS while the results of Mr. Obama's "Go Green" initiatives have been failures.
Shucks, the electric vehicle in Finland is ONE good example.....costs MILLIONS of dollars for Jobs Saved or Jobs Created in Finland and the company is producing vehicles which cost $ 100,000 EACH.
I won't get into one of the worst Mr. Obama initiatives which will be a point of contention with the Left: the solar panel thingy.
I'm NOT saying it's "one thing alone", but you are kidding yourself if you think America has been "going green" for 30 plus years...
Conservatives keep saying we need to "save America" for our "children and grandchildren", yet they don't seem to care about the environment! I don't get it??
Jo-An
My oldest child is 33 years old. I remember the solar panel salesman trying to sell me panels for my home before my child was born. So I am not kidding anybody.
Conservatives say "we have to stop taxing and spending" to enable our children and grandchildren to have a good life and enjoy the fruits of their labor. What is wrong with that? You say that conservatives don't seem to care about the environment? I haven't heard any conservatives say that. I do hear progressives/liberals say "the conservatives want dirty air and water" but just because some nut says something it doesn't make it true.
JH. you state "This country will always need oil." No, not true. The oil will be gone. Either 50,or so years. The supply is not limited, not does the earth redo the oil supply. We need to come up with something else, either now or before the oil leaves the United States. That is one of the reason the oil reserves were capped to begin with. Use other countries oil and then ours. It is just the OPEC has gotten out of control, and our past government allowed it.
It may not be battery power and/or wind, but it will be something. It seems the insight of the manufacturing United States have become "can't do it". It used to be of course we can, and we did.
Where supposed to believe the Democrats care about the environment and protecting endangered species?

humanevents ..hasn't that all been debunked years ago...
hey JH... increase our domestic oil production? You do realize we are an EXPORTER of gasoline at this point don't you? We make more gasoline than we consume already as it is. So what will increasing production do? Learn how commodities work.
Jo-An, you need to come out of your liberal echo chamber and stop believing those talking points. Republicans aren't against alternative sources of energy, at least not cost-effective viable ones. If you want people to adopt new technology, do what the computer and cell phone industry does, deliver a better solution year after year while decreasing the cost.
For example, today I wouldn't even consider driving a hybrid vehicle. They cost too much. The price premium you have to pay doesn't justify them and you can buy A LOT of gas for many years for your un-hybrid vehicle. Same holds true for solar panels to produce electricity for your house. You'll be dead of old age before they pay for themselves. Wind power? Equally as expensive.
When these technologies have an acceptable return on investment and are just as convenient as what we're using today for energy sources, then they'll become more widely accepted.
The problem is that with today's technology, green is capable of handling the needs. Wind mills and solar just don't provide enough energy day and night, good and bad weather. Hydroelectric is good, but you can't put up damns anymore because of environmental concerns.
Amanuka when are you going to learn I verify things with multiple sources? I have better things to do then spew unsubstantiated rhetoric and baseless "Facts".

Realist, algae oil has been kept under wraps since the mid 1980's. It is a VERY viable green energy that would get us off of our crude dependency but they refuse to put it into production and I believe the cost to manufacture is somewhere around $45 per barrel. But don't quote me on that price. It was years ago that I read it.
Though I do agree most green energies aren't quite there yet, Algae oil can be there VERY quickly. but big oil doesn't want that.
Thats funny Amunaka because every time someone asks a serious question you never have an answer.
This is off subject from last weeks article about Voter ID's;
Amuka did you ever come up with an answer from last week when several of us asked "Why do American citizens have to show a government issued ID to prove there a U.S. citizen and have to pay a $25 background check to excercize there Second Amendment Consitutionly protected rights to own and purchase firearms but how dare any one suggest that someone should have to prove there a U.S. citizen to vote which only U.S. Citizens have the right to do because its such a hardship?"
skiing111, I know about oil from algae, but there is no evidence that it is being suppressed by anybody. There are a lot of people trying to produce fuel from Algae, but it hasn't been demonstrated commercially and it doesn't have anything to do with the oil companies suppressing it. Estimates are that with subsidies, it could reach price parity with oil in 2018. It might be a little sooner with the rising oil prices, but it isn't ready now or in the next few years. That being said, I would rather give the subsides to the companies trying to create fuel from algae, than the oil companies or ethanol producers.
We Pennsylvanians are going to soon drill oil out in western Pennsylvania. The only thing in our way is enviormental activists(THAT ARE NOT EVEN FROM PENNSYLVANIA).My dad(85)owns about 50 acres of land with tons of oil under it.We are not going to let enviormentalists say what we can and can not do with OUR land.

And meanwhile we keep killing the Earth so oil corps can get richer. No wonder God is pissed with humanity...such foolish idiots.

@JO-AN
Why, why, why, do you think it's okay to force an economy to do something against its will when going green is a progression not a demand? In a free market demand will drive technology. Your government has proved time and time again that subsidizing green energy just bankrupts companies and wastes tax dollars. We will go "green" (what a stupid word) one day but as long as we're sitting on billions of barrels of oil that will last dozens of generations to come, why, why, why are liberals so hell bent on ignoring one of our most abundant resources?
There are billions to be made by the elite lawmakers if they FORCE "green" energy. It is not economically sound at this time but one day it will be. It's ALWAYS about money, don't even fool your simple mind by thinking that these liberal lawmakers want to hug the earth. There's a lot of money to be made off this stuff and all they have to do is convince the really gullible people that humans can control the climate, then voila, money in the bank baby. If you think I'm wrong you 'aint' to bright.
We're sitting on oil, oil companies make billions, we use a whole bunch of oil and we've got enough of it to last over a hundred years. Do you really think that when we ACTUALLY start running out that a newer technology won't be in full swing. This crap is not going to happen over night so stop pretending that $10 gas will suddenly cause us to all go out and by a Prius. If that happened how do you think we're going to produce all the power needed to charge those cars? Yeah I know, wind and solar right? Wake up!
There is no such thing as man made global warming, but if you want to personally write the check to subsidize everything the government does be my guest. By the way, that's over 200k for every Chevy Volt. I'll take my subsidy in gold please.
If big oil companies are making BILLIONS in profits, then why should we subsidize them?
This is just more big goverment give away brought on through loobyist...
The oil companies are making approx, ten percent profit....look it up.
And I, as a taxpayer, DEMAND that you, Mr. Obama, quit throwing American taxpayer dollars away for your failed "Go Green" initiatives.
For Jo Annnnna: since you are set on getting off the oil binge, you might consider going through your home and discard ANYTHING made from oil/petroleum. Here are a couple of lists to get you started:
"Republican presidential contenders and GOP leaders in Congress denounced the idea and called on Obama to take further steps to expand oil production in the United States" It seems that the republicans are more concerned with profits and no taxes on the wealthy or themselves...while making sure that what middle class is left carries all the burden.
What all you right wing folks fail to realize is that we are close to the tipping point for out planet. If we pull all of the oil out of the ground and burn it we doom our children to a horrible fate by destroying this ecosystem.
The Great Carbon Bubble
World's oceans in peril
sing-sing, should we all starve and freeze to death, and leave the oil in the ground, while we kumbaya about "we are the World" bs?
There is an algae plant down in Arizona somewhere, I read about it recently. They are trying to produce ethanol from it, not oil. I must admit I am a conservative Republican, so bash away. I happen to like solar, wind, etc, and grew up where most electrical power was hydro (water). However, both solar and wind require huge battery banks if they are to be anything other than back-up or supplemental systems. The US has an abundant supply of both coal and natural gas, and they should be fully exploited. The problem with the president's idea to end subsidies to the oil companies is that will directly and immediately raise prices, I would not even attempt to guess by how much. Do you really think that if the subsidies end, and the companies suddenly are paying billions more in taxes, that they will not pass the costs on to us? Ending the subsidies is a good thing, I don't think ANY company should receive federal subsidy money (and big oil is only one of the many recipients). At this time, though, it is going to hurt us really badly in our personal bank accounts.
Jon, the subsidies amount to about two billion a year, in a four trillion budget. I don't think it is any great accomplishment if we do end the subsidies. If I received a two billion dollar subsidy, that that would be monumental. Small drilling companies get most of the subsidies, ad it could cost us much more in the long run to cut them out. Those small drillers are American drillers for the most part.
"Why do American citizens have to show a government issued ID to prove there a U.S. citizen and have to pay a $25 background check to excercize there Second Amendment Consitutionly protected rights to own and purchase firearms but how dare any one suggest that someone should have to prove there a U.S. citizen to vote"
....ummm because you're probably not going to kill anyone with your vote, even if you're a deranged teabirther?
So the brainless hypocrites of the right wing lunatic fringe are now in favor of subsidies and bail outs purely because President Obama has called to have them abolished?
I just want to embrace the irony of this moment and savor it forever!
I love how all the right wing idiots rant and rail against using any money at all to help American citizens. Whether it be social safety nets, education, infrastructure or whatever. California currently produces 11.6% of it's energy needs from renewable energy sources. The number is over 20% if you include hydroelectric. The state is currently building several new solar and wind fields in various locations. So don't you uneducated boobs tell me it's not viable. Your talking point doesn't make it true. We'll continue to lead the nation while you naysayers repeat your oil company propaganda and stick your heads in the sand.

P.S. I find it hilarious how all the sudden people on the right get all environmentally conscious when it's a solar plant or a wind plant going up. Kind of like how they got all anti-war when Obama did Libya in 3 months for the cost of 2 weeks of Iraq and no US casualties....
You people are living in the past. But I bet it won't stop you from adopting the successful models and technologies my state comes up with once you have no options because the oil is gone.... it hasn't stopped you in the past.
"So power and greed ran riot, contaminated and pillaged everything, and held nothing sacred or worthy of respect until (the Romans) plunged themselves into their own destruction." - Sallust, Roman Historian 35 BC

Rick,
The main difference between the Republican and Democrat parties is that the Republicans are rigid, rules based, and keep their member in line with clubs. The democrats, on the other hand, are free to speak, free to vote, and are NOT otherwise "controlled" by party leaders.
In this case, these two Democrats have three masters... 1) what's right for the country, 2) what's right for their state, and 3) what the Democrat party wants. Apparently #2 trumps all. When push comes to shove the state's electorate own's their re-election. Theirs is a position on jobs versus the national debt.
$4 Billion for all of the oil and gas companies combined.... Yet Obama gave GM $14 BILLION in tax breaks alone, on top of the bailout money.
Guess it's OK as long as it is being used to buy union votes.
GM's sweetheart tax deal
"The U.S. Treasury is giving up $14 billion in tax revenue because of a sweetheart deal it's giving General Motors.
"Since the company shed $30 billion in debt during bankruptcy, it should have wiped out most of the tax break...But somehow, that never happened, and the automaker was able to keep most of its tax breaks, essentially receiving a $14 billion "gift" from the government.
While it's unclear why GM was allowed to carry over its losses, some experts insist that GM got preferential treatment...the tax break was just another example of how GM's bankruptcy process was unlike any previous bankruptcies.
One reason the government might have let General Motors claim the loss, was to reduce the perceived cost of the bailout, said Linus Wilson, finance professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Also, the fact that GM kept the tax breaks made its stock more attractive at the time of its initial public offering last November, Wilson said."
http://money.cnn.com/2011/02/23/news/companies/gm_bailout/index.htm
The hypocrisy in all of this is that the government subsidizes anything. It is time to end all subsidizes, re-write the tax code, and let people pick and choose where they spend their dollars. As if the government spends our money wisely, they spend for perks, IOU's, and to buy votes. Our tax code is totally political and it is bloated with tax breaks and loopholes for those with enough money to buy congress. Cherry picking this one subside is hardly solving anything, it is nothing more then political theater and more avoidance of finally fixing the entire system.
Point is here, we don't need to be paying these sons-a-bitches to rip us off. Additionally, we need to regulate the "speculative" and "hedge fund" industries. Manipulation is killing the American middle class, and poor.
I believe that we need to reduce our dependency of fossil fuels for many reasons but global warming is not one of them. The problem is going green without pushing the nation into the poor house. I do not believe that the White House has offered a practical solution. As far as the economy goes, they seem to be making random guesses.
This article is very short on information. Exactly what are these special considerations;what motivated them in the first place; how have things changed; what will be the anticipated effect of gas prices both near and long term; how much new revenue will actually be derived; and what is the government going to do with the money? The President seems to be calling for and taking economic action without full regard for the economic consequences. Year ago the President promised that he would cut the deficit in half by the end of his first administration. According to the White House the President is not going to keep his promise. In his state of the union speech the President talked about starting to pay down the National Debt yet his White House is forecasting huge deficits every year for at least a decade. When the stimulus bill was being considered the President's organization issued a report forecasting what would happen to unemployment as a function of passage of the stimulus bill. According to the report unemployment has been worse that if the government took no action at all yet the federal government has piled up all this additional debt. There is a credibility problem here.
The President needs to be reminded of some words of wisdom that were spoken back in March of 2006. The words were as true then as they are today.
"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America 's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, "the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."
~ Senator Barack H. Obama, March 2006
More election year BS from Obama.
Fake populist BS at that. Obama knows congress is not going to get rid of the subsidies so he can pretend to be on the public's side on this issue.
skiing111 yes, there are alternatives, but what no ones seems to be talking about is the lobbying power of the oil companies. Money talks.....and greed (as we know) runs amuck.
Dangerous mind--CA produces 11 percent of its energy from renewable sources? Gee, HOW many days of the year does CA have SUNSHINE? Solar is a fairly viable option in an area with LOTS of sunshine and very few 'bad weather' conditions like extreme heat/cold, tornados, hurricanes, hail storms, wind storms and just not that much sunshine. And they STILL only produce 11 percent of their energy in renewables. And remember, for most of the year, CA residents do not need to heat or cool their homes. (my son LIVES in LA, and he does not have a furnace, and only a small window unit AC that he usually only uses on vent.)
Now, ME--I live in MO, and we don't HAVE that much sun in the winter, and not enough in the summer to power AC in 100 degree weather with hades like humidity. We do use heat pumps, but most did NOT until the price came down drastically. Wind? Nope, not consistent enough, and too many trees.
But heck, CA cannot even provide themselves with enough WATER. And the time is coming when neighboring states are going to 'cut them off', in which case CA will be burning a lot of oil to de-salinate the Pacific Ocean.
But hey--if you want to make this country more GREEN, and don't mind IMPOSING it on people, how about if we start LIMITING family size? I've been making the point for YEARS that we don't NEED to be allowing a million EXTRA people to emigrate here legally, we're overcrowded enough as it is. And if we ARE going to let anyone come here, they need to be able to prove they have the skills to be not only self supporting, but beneficial to the US. And don't get me started on the ILLEGALS here, most barely literate, most unable to speak English, and most unable to do anything to benefit this country, but PERFECTLY willing and able to crank out three times the number of kids as Americans do, in order to increase their ties and hopefully be granted an amnesty.
If we want to "protect" the world from GLOBAL warming, we should START with announcing that we will no longer be aiding and abetting the over population of it. And that INCLUDES over farming (and over fertilizing ) our land to feed people whose parents had NO idea of how they would EVER be able to take decent care of them.
Goodnight

Germany is cutting
solar-power subsidies
because they are expensive and inefficient.

Germany once prided
itself on being the “photovoltaic
world champion”, doling out generous subsidies—totaling more than $130 billion,
according to research from Germany’s Ruhr University—to citizens to invest in
solar energy. But now the German government is vowing to cut the subsidies
sooner than planned and to phase out support over the next five years. What
went wrong?
Subsidizing green
technology is affordable only if it is
done in tiny, tokenistic amounts. Using the government’s generous subsidies,
Germans installed 7.5 gigawatts of photovoltaic capacity last year, more than
double what the government had deemed “acceptable.” It is estimated that this
increase alone will lead to a $260 hike in the average consumer’s annual power
bill.
According to Der
Spiegel, even members of
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s staff are now describing the policy as a massive
money pit. Philipp Rösler, Germany’s minister of economics and technology, has
called the spiraling solar subsidies a “threat to the economy.”
Germany’s enthusiasm
for solar power is understandable.
We could satisfy all of the world’s energy needs for an entire year if we could
capture just one hour of the sun’s energy. Even with the inefficiency of
current PV technology, we could meet the entire globe’s energy demand with
solar panels by covering 250,000 square kilometers (155,342 square miles),
about 2.6 percent of the Sahara Desert.
Unfortunately,
Germany—like most of the world—is not as
sunny as the Sahara. And, while sunlight is free, panels and installation are
not. Solar power is at least four times more costly than energy produced by
fossil fuels. It also has the distinct disadvantage of not working at night,
when much electricity is consumed.
In the words of the
German Association of Physicists,
“solar energy cannot replace any additional power plants.” On short, overcast
winter days, Germany’s 1.1 million solar-power systems can generate no
electricity at all. The country is then forced to import considerable amounts
of electricity from nuclear power plants in France and the Czech Republic.
Indeed, despite the
massive investment, solar power
accounts for only about 0.3 percent of Germany’s total energy. This is one of
the key reasons why Germans now pay the second-highest price for electricity in
the developed world (exceeded only by Denmark, which aims to be the “world
wind-energy champion”). Germans pay three times more than their American
counterparts.
Moreover, this
sizeable investment does remarkably little
to counter global warming. Even with unrealistically generous assumptions, the
unimpressive net effect is that solar power reduces Germany’s CO2
emissions
by roughly 8 million metric tons—or about 1 percent – for the next 20 years. To
put it another way: By the end of the century, Germany’s $130 billion solar
panel subsidies will have postponed temperature increases by 23 hours.
Using solar, Germany
is paying about $1,000 per ton of CO2 reduced.
The current CO2 price in Europe is $8. Germany could have cut 131
times
as much CO2 for the same price. Instead, the Germans are wasting more than 99 cents of every
euro that they plow into solar panels.
It gets
worse: Because Germany is part of the European
Union Emissions Trading System, the actual effect of extra solar panels in
Germany leads to no CO2 reductions, because total emissions
are already capped.
Instead, the Germans simply allow other parts of the EU to emit more CO2.
Germany’s
solar panels have only made it cheaper for Portugal or Greece to use coal.
Defenders of Germany’s
solar subsidies also claim that
they have helped to create “green jobs.” But
each job created by green-energy
policies costs an average of $175,000—considerably
more than job creation
elsewhere in the economy, such as infrastructure or health care. And many
“green jobs” are being exported to China, meaning that Europeans subsidize
Chinese jobs, with no CO2 reductions.
Germany’s
experiment with subsidizing inefficient solar
technology has failed. What
governments should do instead is to focus first on
increasing research and development to make green-energy technology cheaper and
more competitive. Production should be ramped up later.
In the meantime,
Germans have paid about $130 billion for
a climate-change policy that has no impact on global warming. They have
subsidized Chinese jobs and other European countries’ reliance on dirty energy
sources. And they have needlessly burdened their economy. As even many German
officials would probably attest, governments elsewhere cannot afford to repeat
the same mistake.

Cost to operate a Chevy Volt
Eric Bolling (Fox Business Channel's "Follow the Money")
test drove the Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors.
For four days in a row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25
miles before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine.
Eric calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran
on the battery. So, the range including the 9 gallon gas tank and the 16
kwh battery is approximately 270 miles. It will take you 4 1/2 hours to
drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to charge the battery and
you have a total trip time of 14.5 hours. In a typical road trip your
average speed (including charging time) would be 20 mph.
According to General Motors, the Volt battery holds 16 kwh of
electricity. It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery.
The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned so I looked
up what I pay for electricity.
I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons)
$1.16 per kwh. 16 kwh x $1.16 per kwh = $18.56 to charge the
battery. $18.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate
the Volt using the battery.
Compare this to a similar size car equipped with only a 4 cylinder
gasoline engine that gets 32 mpg. $3.49 per gallon divided by 32 mpg =
$0.11 per mile.
The gasoline powered car cost about $15,000 while the Volt costs $46,000.
So Obama wants us to pay 3 times as much for a car that costs more
that 7 times as much to run and takes 3 times as long to drive across country.
REALLY?
No wonder GM is having trouble selling the Volt !
Going green is inevitable and rejecting it makes as much sense as people complaining about cars scaring the horses years ago. America needs to get on board with the rest of the world or we will lose out on another industry.
Obama is right, Americans need to stop subsidizing "Oil" profits. Stop the subsidies and to get gasoline prices where they should be the government should compete, that will drive the oil executives into zero profit and when they close their doors Americans will buy gasoline for 35% less than it is now. Look at PEMEX!
Please Dick, do not use PEMEX as an example. Mexico gas price is lower than that in the US mainly due to the fact that a lot of Mexican Oil is sold to other countries at the world market price and much of the profit is used to SUBSIDIZE the in Mexico price of gasoline. Along with various other commodities. It is the Mexican politicians way of keeping the masses happy and staying in office.
Also is the U.S. politicians would be truthful, people would realize that what they refer to as subsidies does not involve money collected from taxpayers to be sent to the oil industry. It is actually from where the politicians have at one time or another legislated a tax on the oil industry, then turned arround and reduced that tax or fee. The Politicians then occassionally refer to that reduction of taxes or fees as a subsidy when they want the public to think they want to be hard on the industry.
JH, if we are always going to need oil then what will happen when the world's oil supply runs out? Instead of kicking the can down the road saying crap like "oh we will not be around long enough to see it so let the future generations deal with it" we should be proactively preparing the nation for the inevitable end of oil. This means serious research into sustainable renewable energy. Solar is the most likely renewable energy of the future because Sol is not going to go away anytime soon and is a reliable source of energy.
Wind is not because it is tied to weather patters, hydro electricity is not a renewable source of energy because water levels will continue to lower, estimates say that in the next 25 to 30 years Hoover dam will have to be closed down because lake Mead will be too low to produce power.
However if we could find a way to either improve the conversion processes of solar cells to produce more power per cell and then, or, find a way to transmit energy through the air, maybe using infrared beams or something, we could then create satellites with no other purpose then to directly convert light from the sun into energy without having to worry about cloud cover.
There is also a fictional, yet plausible, object called a Dyson sphere. If we could build one of those we could harvest 100% of the solar output from the sun. This would be several hundred years into the future though as such a feat would require orbital construction sites.
Either way you look at it oil will not be around forever so why not actually proactively plan for that eventuality instead of pushing it off like we do with everything else.
One day we will run out of oil. Theres no reason to help oil companies keep us in this energy trap. If you think taking subsidies away from oil companies , who raise prices when people "think" prices will go up but DO NOT lower prices when people "think" prices should go down, is somehow a bad idea then you must be delusional.
Quietly, our government ended the tax credits designed to spur the wind farm industry. That is our "green" administration, but it is loudly proclaiming that it must end fossil fuel subsidies. How dedicated to green energy are they if the very industries that we are supposed to look to in the future are quietly being cut off as they just begin to show some viability?
As long as mankind has existed, there have been those who have held apocolyptic views of the world, guessing how and where it will all end, predicting chaos etc. And in a completely natural world (we won't go into anything relating to a Superior Being or God), this is true-nothing is permanent. The geological records show the huge shifts in climate, temperature, rainfall, and even the land masses themselves over the passage of time. Huge events that had nothing to do with mankind or pollution or abuse of resources, and would be completely unstoppable, even with technology today. Eruptions of Pompeii, Vesuvius, Krakatoa-all spewed more contaminants into the air than the modern, mechanized era, yet humanity and history continued. We are seeing seemingly strange weather and climate conditions, but not so strange as to not have happened in the history of our planet. We can spend all our energy trying to stop forces that are simply not going to stop, or we can spend our time and devote research to finding out how to cope with the changes that are coming, how to live with the new nature rather than fight it. The radical environmentalists will even contend that farm animals contribute to global warming by expelling methane gas....I don't suppose that our livestock is producing any greater degree of methane than the massive dinosaurs of previous eras, and the world did not shrivel up and die, but rather it changed and everything in it had to adapt. Other sources of energy is a wonderful concept, but it is not something that happens overnight, and it cannot come at the expense of people going about the general business of living in the world as it is now. Innovations come from people, in a free economy, looking to fill a need efficiently, and yes, at a profit, but not by bashing people over the head, calling them names, accusing them of not caring about the world....Come on, you get more flies with honey than vinegar. I, for one, have had enough vinegar shovelled at me to last a lifetime. Funny thing about constantly berating people, impuning their motives, making them out to be the "bad guys" as it seems to result in a self fulfilling prophecy where they live up to the negative traits that you ascribe to them. There is not incentive to do anything else.
I agree Jo-An. The GOP/TPers will screech 'solyndra' as if that justifies not investing in alternative, clean energy. Yet, they don't say one word about the destruction to our environment and businesses due to oil spills. Not to mention the billions in tax dollars that are spent to clean up the messes that are actually never completely cleaned. - look at the Exxon Valdez oil spoil. They ignore the fact that we interfere and die in the middle east due to oil consumption. Clean alternative, renewable energy is there - we just need to put the money we give to big oil to pollute and stuff in the wallets to the Green energy companies in the US.
Gas prices are skyrocketing, and no one looks past TODAY. The greedy, me, me, me attitude will be the destruction of this country!
No I believe that will be the spend, spend, spend of the Democrats that will take care of it first.
Geez Jo-An - How do you get to 7-11 to buy your smokes, Skittles and beef jerky? I'm almost 100% positive you don't walk. If you have a car that actually uses oil and gas you are a mighty hypocrite. If you want to go green go ahead and buy a Volt or some other crap electric car.
Maybe Jo-An should do some research and find out how much oil her COMPUTER used for it's manufacture.
Or her make up she uses every morning, or her toothbrush, or her........ (just will in the blank).
Ahhhhh....I drive a Volt AND a Schwinn...don't smoke or eat jerky,
AND I am aware of the "footprint" left by ALL the things I do enjoy!!
I recycle, and try to be as environmentally self aware as I can...I'm NOT perfect BUT at least I put an effort out there!!
Jo-An, thanks for your effort. I do try also, however, not always successful. My grandkids do a better job than I do. The four of them, all 19 and older, do not drive (too expensive), they ride the bus everywhere they want to go or they walk. We are lucky in Metro Denver you can get almost anywhere on the bus and the waits are not that bad. They learned to do their shopping, movies and jobs on the bus line. They may have to walk a few blocks to their jobs, but they do it. Yes, they go to the mountains usually with friends and share expenses. Life is hard but the young show just how easy it can be.
Perhaps you should read Post #3.6 Joanne to get a real Idea of the Democrats Devotion to protecting endangered species and sensitive lands. Reid is after all Senate Majority leader and was elected by the majority of his peers to lead them.
@slightlyold,
I know people have been "talking" about going green, I just mean, people aren't putting forth much effort. And, then of course you have the "I don't believe in Science" crowd, that think "climate change" is a hoax...
This shouldn't be a "den vs rep" issue, it should be an American issue!
@slightyold,
I meant to ALSO say, good for at least trying, and encouraging your grandkids! Keep it up, every little thing helps!
:)
ModeratelyIndy
Ahhhhhh, come on!!
Valdez? Yep, sea life and some birds got pretty messed up for a short time but destroying the earth? How ignorant is that? How about the gulf two years ago? Can you say evaporation? No doubt there was a spill, no doubt it got cleaned up and no doubt there was a ton of hype about how the region wouldn't recover for a hundred years. It's the same as it was before the oil well disaster! All Bull s$%* environmental alarmist talk. You want me to pay outrageous amounts of money for something that we have an abundance of simply because you THINK that we're destroying the precious earth. I find that threatening to the likes of you sticking your hand in my pocket.
You need to unplug from the matrix my friend, the earth is fine and dandy. When people are caught intentionally dumping toxins into our streams and water ways then eliminate the bastards, I'm cool with that. But don't stand on your stump and try to convince people that the earth needs a big hug from America that could essentially put us in the poor house when there is no scientific evidence of honest to God man-made global warming.
For any data you put up, I can produce data that will debunk it. It's made up data and that's been proven multiple times. I think you should find a better cause like protesting erupting volcano's, I'm sure we're to blame for that too.
Rightwingwac,
You are SOOooo in denial. Here is the truth, though I am certain you will deny this evidence as well.
The Great Carbon Bubble
World's oceans in peril
Moderate: The point is that private investors and private industry need to invest in viable alternative energy projects; both the risk and reward are theirs to take. The federal government has no business lending or giving grant money to promote schemes like Solyndra, or General Motors for that matter.
But but but.... wind and solar aren't viable!!! That's why California, one of the nation's largest states gets 20%+ of it's energy from renewables...
http://www.energy.ca.gov/renewables/
Keep your heads in the sand ostriches.
California steals its energy from other states. Neveda and other states have to sell energy to California for a discount, mandatory by federal government after the rolling black outs. California will not produce enough energy for their own consumpition, tree hugers won't allow them. What a double standard.
Singbiker
They told everyone 15 years ago that if something wasn't done in 10 years time the planets temperatures would rise to a point of no return and we'd surely meet our doom. The scientists cored ice to 10,000 years ago and found the co2 count at a miniscule and non-effective difference than it is today. Is that becuase the cave men were crusin' in their Hummers? They told us the entire computer grid was shutting down on 2000 but nothing, they're saying the end of times are the end of 2012 but that will be nothing too.
You're link didn't show but again, anything you put up here I can debunk with "factual" data as well. So who do you believe, those who stand to make billions out of something that clearly wont change the environment because most of the world wouldn't participate even if it did. Or people who are slightly skeptical about what "they" continual tell us?
Denial? Yep. Doesn't mean I'm not pro-earth, but it means that I'm not getting in the sheep line when all I have to do is dig and discover truths myself that are much more logical in argument. The US can stop all burning of all fossil fuels tomorrow and it won't change anything about our climate. It's as simple as solar activity and you are probably rolling your eyes but prove me wrong. Funny enough, the biggest solar flare recorded went off a couple of months ago and we've had one of the warmest winters....hmm. Anyway, I'm not going to convince you and you're not going to convince me but check in with me in a few years and we'll compare notes on how our co2's have caused tsunami's and earthquakes, forest fires, and Tornado's. You should talk this stuff out, it really sounds ridiculous when you start saying it out loud.
Hey Dangerous;
No one is saying it isn't viable. You're example however is a near bankrupt state that rapes it's citizens (the legal ones) as much as any. Of course it's possible...just like flying cars, daily space travel and holographic movies. BUT IT'S A PROGRESSION! The government has no business forcing it on us because there is no reason to advance it at lightning speed. Our technology isn't perfected in these areas and although you boast and brag about this 20% crap. The reality is that California is receiving billions in subsidies to build and maintain these forms of energy producers.
Dollar for dollar (right now) it's millions to one to build this stuff and make it work to an actual useful level. You bring up Solyndra but there are multiple companies that went out on our dime. The government needs to get the F$%& out of the way and let private sector determine when those technologies need to come in full force. You can cry like the diapered liberals usually do about us "right wing idiots" but the truth is the truth. Some government is needed and is good, the government that your party seems to push for is anti-American at best. JFK is turning in his grave.
By the way, let's put it to a test. I challenge every liberal on this post to choke down their pride and criticize your messiah on anything. And I mean something that would be good for the country not some hard Marxist b.s. Let's see if any of his sheep can actually stomach it. Oh yeah, I don't give a rats ass about the money you're crying about. But just watch what it will do at the pump whether you believe it or not. I want the money in my pocket not baracks. It would be fine if your messiah took those billions and actually did something good with them. Believe me he won't. The money will be funneled into some other wasted government program. Do you think he's actually going to give it to us? He is the great spender and the great divider and if you believe in him you'll believe anything...hey, I think I just figured something out.
What do you think China or Russia will do when we have vast amounts of oil reserves and the world has none. Who will own it? Do you think it will anyway bennifit us. When the world is will to pay through the ear do you think we will get it for cheap if any at all. No. If China doesn't own it already I'm sure it won't let us keep it to ourselves.
JeffDavis-1942240 You raise a very valid point.....and as our present administration fully believes that all we have to do is talk nice/nice with two bit political dicatators, and all the world's problems will go away, and we will all sing Kum Bay Ah together in perfect harmony........a government that is going to demonstrate financial restraint by dismantling our military, so that the two bit dictators have no reason to listen to us at all ("you and whose army?") when we tell them what is fair in the world. When the 9/11 attacks will seem like a day in the park compared to the meglomaniacs who think that American cannot and will not defend itself......It is a very real concern. I suggest that you start learning Mandarin now.
Ughhh, Sue, our military is the most well-equipped in the world. We spend over a half-trillion on defense every year, more than most of the world combined. I think that some budget cuts won't damage the military that much. That, and pray tell who are the two bit dictators?? If their in Chin and Russia, that is all we can do. They are HUGE. And the reason why Obama is talking is because he doesn't want to repeat Bush's mistake; and since when is diplomacy bad???? America has done worse. Negotiating shows practicality. And if China rises, its gonna be because Bush drove up our debt substantially, crippling us for decades to come. That means a lot more belt-tightening. That means everything has to be considered (EXCEPT INVESTMENTS IN EDUCATION AND INNOVATION). That includes defense and tax increases. If the GOP will be willing to raise taxes and revenues, maybe we can get a deal, get our economy rolling, and make the necessary investments to beef up our military. But until the Grand Obstructionist Party compromises, we'll be in this rut. Hopefully the American people will come to their senses, send these conservative idiots to the curb and give vote in people who will show some REAL leadership (Democrats, Obama, moderate Republicans). Until then, may God have mercy on us all.
Oh and I'd have a negotiating diplomat of a president than an ineffective and incompetent war commander that we had last time.
OBAMA BIDEN 2012
DEATH TO THE GRAND OBSTRUCTIONIST PARTY 2012
DEMOCRATIC HOUSE AND SENATE 2012
President Obama has an even more pressing problem than the economy and rising gas prices, how about his championing the ouster on Mubarrak in Egypt and allowing the Muslim Brotherhood to take control. Now Americans are facing trial and the penalty is most likely execution in this sham trial. Wonder how the Secy of Transportaion feels knowing that the person responsible for his son's arrest is is his boss, President Obama. If those Americans are executed in Egypt Obama will not win reelection.
Richard,
Sounds like this was a good thing for the Egyptian people. Why should this be a bad thing for you?
Shouts of “God is great” erupted from Tahrir Square at twilight as Mr. Mubarak’s vice president and longtime intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman, announced that Mr. Mubarak had passed all authority to a council of military leaders.
Tens of thousands who had bowed down for evening prayers leapt to their feet, bouncing and dancing in joy. “Lift your head high, you’re an Egyptian,” they cried.

As for the Americans going on trial, that story is already over!

Where'd you hear that little gem of an unfounded conspiracy from? Glenn Beck? What does Obama have to do with who they elect or who they kick out? Besides voicing that it was a good thing the dictator was being ousted?
Good buy Houston.
Hello Dubai.
Well, I have to say that everyone believe that the POTUS has anything to do with the price of oil/gas, you are wrong. The prices are set in Wall Street and the president can not control the prices. I love how eveyone get on the site and try to speak their minds and do not have a clue on what is going on and who is responsible for the prices. You all are listen to Newt and he know well he can not control the the prices either, well they he can by used the tax payer money for bribery, or more substy which turn out to be the same. It will not get any better but, worst with the so call GOP candidates we have running now.
Obama is a waste of time .. he is plain worthless. The sooner he is voted out the better for this country .. USA CANNOT take another 4 years of that idiot. We would be 18T in debt and be another Greece or worse. All you pro Obama fools would get what you deserve at that point.. The Euro State of America ....
Did you read the article? He is trying to do away with a 4 billion dollar giveaway to companies that in no way need it.
You know, if you read enough of these articles, you start to see a pattern develop -
Obama says something simple, perhaps even something Republicans have said themselves - like "The sky is blue..." Republicans say, "NOOOOOO!" Then, in the comments section, the Republican trolls come out in full force calling Obama stuff like, "Obummer" "Obozo" "Obamanation" "Dumbama" Also - "He's worthless!" "He's an idiot!" "He's a socialist!" "He's the worst president ever!" Bla bla bla bla...
Nope. He is just a Democrat and Black. If the US had entered a historic time of peace and prosperity (like the 90s) the Republicans would STILL call him all of the things above, just like they did Clinton. I guess politics is like sports - you root for your home team whether they are good, bad, or plain old ugly.
That's because he's a boob and has done so many ignorant anti-constitution things and has demonstrated time and time again that it's about a power grab and nothing more for him. I certainly don't give a rip if he accidentally stumbles on a cure for cancer. At this stage in the game he can do NOTHING right as far as I'm concerned. Hey turnabout is fair play; GW screwed up a lot but mostly becuase he passed every bill the democrat congress put on his desk. But anyway, he could have flown above the citizens in a jet pack handing out trillions of dollars while declaring free energy to all US citizens and libs still would have hated him.
I don't hate barack in vengance for GW, I hate him because he represents everything that we freed ourselves from more nearly 250 years ago. He's anti-American, he despises the way this country is run, and he want's to end the democratic republic that we've had. These are not hypothesis but actual things you can find out about the so-called man. I hate who he is and his little communist wife too, and he can do nothing right.
To your point about name calling...OMG! Liberals mastered that only it wasn't cute cartoony names, they were wayyyy worse. But that was okay, because it was against Bush. We're all hypocrites man, so get off your high horse...barack has that saddle well filled. And something else; take the "black" statement and stick it in your rear! I don't hate skin color, I'm prejudice against and hate stupidity and that is why most of us feel the way we do about your messiah. Besides, why does 1/2 a race make him black? Sounds like you're the one looking at skin color.
It's funny how I'm to the right leaning yet I can find fault in every republican President, yet for some reason you libs can't seem to find anything at all about barack that you are willing to criticize. That's why we like calling you "sheep" and him the "messiah". He can do no wrong in your eyes. Why is that do you suppose? Could it be you're all like the black knight in Monty Pythons Holy Grail? Could it be your stupid pride for being part of something historic just makes you guys look like fools in refusing to admit the obvious? A true mystery...maybe one day the answer will be revealed.
Rightwing, I and every other person I know feel the exact same way about him. He is finished.
do we forget that these 'tax breaks' or so called tax breaks...
Are because of green energy?
What does that mean?
These tax breaks are directly tied into green energy. The oil companies do not get these tax breaks without investing or delivering green energy.
If anything they should be getting more tax breaks to usher us into a new era, that is tax breaks that are directly tied to green energy.
Joe neighbor does not have the tools/resources to mass produce green viable energy. But I bet shell does.
Make it profitable and they will jump ship. Don't think so?
Read up on the chrome hike of the 60's and 70's.
Obama is a tool...
Go to factcheck.org to find the truth behind these evil tax breaks...you will be dumbfounded O' choose this as a talking point.
The oil companies don't get tax breaks. They get tax refunds. They make hundreds of billions of dollars and get refunds. I make 30k and I pay taxes. How about you?
Subsidies were meant for new and developing and/or struggling industries. Green energy comes underneath of that concept. Oil does not. Period. End of discussion.
You righties don't want anyone in America to get any help, not education, infrastructure, the safety net or anything. But oil companies? Yeah why not, give away billions in welfare. You guys appear schizophrenic when you flip flop on your cut cut cut ideology like that.
@rightwingwac
I understand how you feel when it comes to name calling BUT you can't criticize AND do it at the same time as it only proves that you are one-sided in nature. Having said that I am curious as to your assumptions regarding the president and the hatred you have for him. Before I go further I will say that while there are somethings he has done I don't like or agree with, I DO believe that, for all intensive purposes he has done things that I, when taking a step back and looking at it from a different perspective will conclude that he has done what many would say is "the needs of the many greatly outweigh the needs of the few". So with that I pose my question to you.
What has President Obama done that YOU consider "ignorant" and "anti constitutional". What has President Obama done to be considered "Anti American". What have WE(well you) fought for 250 years ago that YOU feel he is trying to take away?
I only ask these questions as I try to understand the reasoning behind some of the rhetoric I keep hearing from both the left AND the right. As a military veteran with 20 years of service, I swore to defend the constitution against ALL emenies BOTH FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC but yet those SAME people are setting policy and sending MY brothers and sisters on missions of a personal nature (Iraq war) but yet we call that an act of patriotism.
I would have to disagree with you that the President, through ALL of his faults, he has still tried to get this country back on track. You can dispute me on this one all day BUT if you do come with FACTS and NOT TALKING POINTS as the get you no where with me.
I have heard the President say publicly in his addresses that he doesn't give a hang about state's rights which is integral to the Constitution and then entire basis of the social contract written by our forefathers to unify the diverse colonies into a single national identity without trying to make them carbon copies of one another.
I have read the healthcare bill-to a greater extent than probably even the people on capital hill who voted for it, and it scares me to death by giving the government far reaching powers, under the guise of providing for the needs of the majority. They can access all personal medical records, all personal financial records. They can reach into people's bank accounts and take funds. They can ration medicine based solely on age related criteria. These are all intrusions into personal freedoms that were guaranteed to me under the constitution. ( As with all legislation, it is not the main items, but the things negotiated and tacked on to get the support on board to pass things) If you read how the government program is supposed to work, it is setting the stage for private insurance to cease and everyone to be forced to participate in government insurance and when you have a monopoly, you have lost all choice.
I find the fact that everyone is using "women's reproductive freedom" as a platform to divide us as a nation, even further. Roe vs Wade still stands guaranteeing the freedom of individuals to choose birth control or abortion. It has withstood scrutiny by the Supreme Court over the years since the decision was rendered. Nothing has changed in America, but the present administration is not above using implied fear tactics that somehow women will not have this freedom of choice if it isn't made a universal part of health coverage, no matter the source of that coverage. I can remember a time, not very long ago, where none of these things, birth control, abortions etc were covered by any insurances-they were not essential, but elective and as such, the person desiring them had to figure out how to pay for them, not a government legislating to make everyone pay for them.
Our President has openly indicated that he isn't concerned with the votes of the working Americans, the independents, the tax paying members of society-his campaigns are predicated on appealing to greed, instituting class warfare mentality, appealing to those who feel "entitled" to the rewards of hard work, without having to work. He is not enabling people to improve their lot...extending unemployment extends the number of people dependent upon government for a longer time, and hopefully generating votes of gratitude and obligation. He is using his Presidential power to buy voters, instead of persuading them of the validity of his plans.
We have no budget, and we have had no budget since he took office, and yet, there is all this talk about budget and budget cutting. How can anything be cut and measured without the original guideline of a budget? Time and again, we hear about things being cut, but yet the projected expenditures, even with the cuts is larger than every before....Everything is on speculation, smoke and mirrors, from a President who promised "transparency in government" and access for the people of this country to make their wishes and needs known. Our international bond rating has been downgraded. We are spent into a debt that is greater than we have ever known. We have spent billions in stimulus, but are hard pressed to even determine where the money actually went, and you can cook the books and adjust the statistics for error all you would like, and we are still looking at almost as many people out of work or underemployed as during the Great Depression. I haven't yet met one, working class citizen who has actually directly benefitted from any stimulus program to date.
While I am not promoting a conspiracy theory, I would like to know why our President will not make his records public (as has every other president prior), as it stands now, it is a divisive issue that could be resolved and ended once and for all. The question in absence of documentation is whether, under our constitution, the man has the right to be the President at all. The media calls people asking a valid and constitutional question radical fringe and conspiracy theorists. Our President refuses to respond in any concrete way. And it isn't just the situation of his birth, his parent's status as citizens, and where he grew up, but we have no idea if even his supposed academic performance is as he advertised. It seems that nobody can access his educational records. We are constantly debating whether a candidate is or is not qualified to hold the office, and we can't even see his academic records, or his test results, or anything else that would lend credibility to his claims of expertise and knowlege. His perfomance as the Senator from Illinois is abysmal, serving only 52 days of his term and spending the rest of his time campaigning for the office of President. He didn't vote, but managed to use taxpayer dollars for overseas visits to foreign nations that had nothing to do with the State of Illinois or service to his constituents. The rest of his working history seems to be equally muddy by design. He claims constitutional expertise, but is it expert understanding and dedication to preserving the constitution as was part of his oath taking, or is it to undermine and destroy the constitutional protections from the inside.
Throughout the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and the Constitution of the United States is a continuing theme of check and balance, and that the role of the Federal Government was largely limited. I have seen our federal government, with the full consent and bluster of the President undermine and overturn state's rights to self govern within their borders. This is probably most glaring on the issue of illegal immigrants. The amnesty option would certainly bring alot more obligatory votes on board for the present administration and be another instance of abuse of Presidential authority to curry favor and buy votes
There is now a federal sales tax associated with real estate purchase and sale. It is buried in the healthcare bill and kind of sneaks in the back door when nobody is looking. It is justified as being needed to pay for the healthcare bill provisions, but that doesn't excuse a new form of taxation being hidden from common knowlege. Taking away capital gains tax breaks has everyone saying "Yeah, stick it to the rich who are making obscene amounts of money", but what happens when you sell the family home to downsize and get socked with Federal real estate tax and then capital gains tax, and you don't suddenly have the nest egg that you thought the residue from that sale would provide for your retirement. Nobody is focussing on the real impact of all these legislative programs on the working people, but rather being directed in attention to "how we are getting even with big business, big oil, fat cat bankers". Instead of our president being the unifier that he promised, he has found new ways to divide us up into ever smaller sub groups and making each feel that everyone else is taking advantage of them.
Mrs Obama took on the cause of children's nutrition-wonderful goal on the surface, but under our President's watch, and in some ways directly due to Mrs. Obama's campaign things have occurred that further inhibit our personal freedoms, our ability to determine what is best for our family. In many school districts, contracts with union cafeteria workers preclude children bringing a lunch from home-everyone is forced to buy the school cafeteria lunch....some children get if for free under the various aid programs for needy families, but other families must pay for it, even if they were willing to pack a lunch from h
Too bad he doesn't shore up support in the middle east. Bring our troops home!
A democrat supermajority? Just like the landslide democratic party victory in the 2010 mid term elections, no doubt.
Just keep on drinking the LoolAde
The 2010 election results were due to the people wanting JOBS to be the main focus. Notice Congresses single digit approval ratings since then. The GOP has consistently been pushing social issues, anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, instead of jobs. I for one believe that the GOP are going to lose some seats in the house for sure and possibly the senate come election time.
Pjamo9--SHHHH. that article on what the GM bailout cost us (and is STILL costing us!) was from MSN!
You know, that 'right wing pub publication.'
And did anyone notice that PART of the downfall of GM was concentrating on the big gas guzzlers at a time when most could not afford to buy them, let alone RUN them.
Well, last week, as a sign that GM is all hunky dory now, a factory in Detroit just started its third shift back up for the first time in a long while. Guess what they MAKE? PICK UPs.
So much for GM learning a lesson, AND for the 'greening of America.'
That's right, very consistent. Campaigner In Chief Obama at his best, campaigning across the country and doing 4 fundraisers in NY. I just hope we can get back on course before today's Bernake's prediction of a major catastrophic economic downfall actually becomes a reality. We can only do it if Obama is out of office. So much damage, imagine what 3 more years of this will look like!! I just hope it will not be too late.
We need to get back on track! Romney 2013!
I guess you want to bring back Bush too..... Democrats are our only hope. GO Obama !!!
GO ROMNEY!
The best, and easiest short term solution to our energy woes, is simply to conserve. If everyone drove a 4 cylinder car or pickup truck, and kept their tires properly inflated, we would be a lot less energy dependent on middle east oil.
Wind and solar are great experiments for the distant future, but, locked in the Obama recession for four years means that these pie in the sky socialist pipe dreams will have to wait for a more prosperous America. A Republican America, under the guidance of Mitt Romney.
maybe thats why the govt mandated fleet avg of 50 mpg in what 2026 or whatever year it is should not be viewed as socialist intrusion of the govt into private enterprise but is done for a purpose-THE GREATER GOOD. Just as a good manager will move the direction of a company into a direction of future growth so do does a good government.
Joseph - You might want to adjust your glasses to be able to see beyond the last two years. You see, and this is not disputed by actual economists only political talking heads, the recession we are in is a result of policies promulgated by the Bush administration.
If you go back and look at news headlines, even you can plainly see that this was all going down at the end of Bush's time. Much of our President's intended agenda (as stated during his campaign) has had to be put aside in order to deal with the very real and very complex problem of turning our economy around.
And let's not forget that the USA does not live in a vacuum - what happened here is still trickling around the globe. I suspect you won't give it a second thought or bother to do any research on which to base your opinion, but imagine if the stated policies from the GOP candidates had actually been implemented when the awful scope of this recession was first being understood. Republicans like Romney would have done the polar opposite of what the financial system studied and learned decades ago as a result of the Great Depression.
I wish there was a magic bullet to shoot at this recession, but unfortunately it took years of lax Republican policies, and the wasting of trillions and trillions of dollars on a grudge war with Iraq (not to mention the thousands of lives given in service to our country) to put us in the hole. It takes time – maybe 3-5 years – for something as slow moving as a nation's economy to change course. You simply cannot expect an aircraft carrier to turn on a dime like a ski boat.
Prosperity comes in many forms. It is this one person's humble opinion that the President, with his continued push for alternative energy, is trying not to take this country green (which would be a side effect) but to encourage us to be the country that discovers/develops the technologies that the world will buy as the alternate fuels market emerges. Kennedy had the space race. Today, we have the race to invent the technology that takes the world forward. We can either be dependent on yet another foreign country for whatever the next kind of energy is and be no better off than we are now, or WE can be the country everyone else is dependent on.
So, Joseph, which do you choose? To stay the course keeps us in the game – gives us a fighting chance for the future. To change to wishy-washy Romney is to give up the future and keep beating the dying horse we're already on.
Oh s--t!, It is all Bush's fault after over three four years of OBAMA'S INEPTITUDE.
Great experiments for the future that combined with hydroelectric make up 20%+ of California's energy needs (one of the largest states in the union).
Yeah... great ideas for the "future" which are being used effectively now. Of course, CA doesn't have to hang on the jock of Big Oil and defend billions in welfare to them like many red states.
Your "those technologies aren't viable now" talking point is false. Sorry. It will fall the way of all the other right wing lies given time. We're building more solar and wind plants in Cali as I speak, along with high speed rail. All the douchebag naysayers can't do a damn thing about it either. But cry and argue to stay in the stone age, Neanderthals. It's entertaining to watch you jump through hoops of false logic and denial.
Mc_callen--see, I HATED that Bush thought he could fight two wars, and NOT pass a tax increase to pay for it.
But Obama continued to fight two wars, and did NOT pass a tax increase to pay for it.
Bush had a hateful prisoner camp, which created resentment around the world.
Despite ABSOLUTLY promising to CLOSE Guantanemo, Obama has FAILED to do so. (a move I support, I might add!)
Bush increased our deficit spending with NO way to pay it back.
And despite RAILING against deficit spending, Obama has not only continued it but ACCELERATED it.
Mean while, when Bush took office, one of the first things he did was convene a 'panel' of energy experts (oil buddies) while denying the public/press ANY access to WHO they were or what decisions were made, and then passed energy policy that gave preference to (quelle surprise!) big oil.
Obama promised openness and transparency, so right after HE took office, he TOO convened a panel of energy experts (COAL buddies from HIS home state,) while denying the public/press ANY access to who they were and what decisions were made, and then passed energy policy that gave preference to BIG COAL.
You see, I had a lot of hopes for Obama being the proverbial broom that 'sweeps clean', and instead, he has just changed the shenanigans around to the DEM side. That is NOT ok with me.
He bargained away women's rights to have a SAFE abortion (and remember, we are ONLY talking about POOR women--wealthier women can ALWAYS get a 'D & C' for cramps.) in order to placate anti abortionists in the DEM party and get an unpopular health 'care' bill thru.
And worst of ALL, he allows millions of black poor to be supplanted in the job market by ILLEGALS, when he PROMISED to stop illegals being able to work here. He stopped all work place raids, and his much vaunted 'increase' of deportations? Replaced Bush's policy of SENDING repeat offenders to JAIL, as a way to make it less attractive to come back.
Now we have a couple of hundred military/national guardsmen coming home over the next two years to NO jobs, and if the president wants to keep THEM from being on the unemployment line, I have a solution--put them, and other out of work AMERICAN construction workers to building a WALL on our southern border, and give them the technology to use cameras, drones, and other equipment to MAINTAIN it.
Obama's new campaign jingle is a HIT!
Mr. foodstamp, bring me a dream
Give me a pension like I've never seen
(Bung, bung, bung, bung)
Give me the money to roll in the clover
Then tell me that my workin' days are over
(Bung, bung, bung, bung)

With my sincere apologies to the Chordettes.
I bet you call yourself an adult too. I would keep your day Job, if you have one that is.. poetry just is not your thing. Go Obama !!!
Don't hold your breath, Sir. Much has changed since then - however, let it be said that those in NH's current government including Ms. Shaheen have been, shall we say, "exposed" of her crimes. So - even if you had no one else to support you in that state, I wouldn't brag about any association with the Shaheen family or its associated attorneys.
That is for the record.
(New Hampshire: To all of the family and friends of "Mackie" in Rochester, Dover, and in all of Maine - avoid Mr. Obama for the specific reasons that we all know about. Keep your dollars and remember "Mackie," may she rest in peace. Love you Mom.)
obama's strategy is to create soros's "One World Government"!!!!
Vote soros, van jones and obama OUT!!!!
How did a communist, anthony van jones, end up as an obama tsar?????
Aren't they all the same guy?
!Duuurrrr!!! Obama's a secret SOSHULIST muslim KENYAN. His birth certificate is FAKED! TERRORIST! Show us your college grades NOW!
Your tinfoil hat needs adjustment dude.
The GOP has created a plutocracy. Government by the wealthy, for the wealthy.
Vote Koch, Norquist and The DO NOTHING CONGRESS OUT!!!!
The Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu , and Mr. Obama have both made it very clear that they want to drive up the price of gas and heating fuel in this country in order to try and persuade people to go with Obama's green energy dreams (You know, the one he is spending a lot of money on for companies that quickly go bankrupt, like Solyndra). Which runs directly contrary to Mr Obama's statement, which he fails to follow up on with actions, that he is in favor of an all of the above approach to domestic energy.
Actions speak louder than words Mr. Obama, and so far your actions are not in favor of American consumers or our economy.
Yeah, the pipedream green energy that currently powers 20%+ of California's energy needs.
http://www.energy.ca.gov/renewables/
Such pie in the sky thinking... </sarcasm>
Why wait till election time Obama? You hoping for a few more votes ..if you was any good at your job you would did this 2 years ago. I dont believe a word you say and im not voting for you either.
Hmm. Why didn't he do this, if it were so important, when he controlled congress in his first two years? He could have beaten the repubs in the Senate then and peeled off the RINOs. To make such demands now is just political BS. Hillary would have made a far better president than this clown--and that's hard for me to say.
Because they only had a Democratic supermajority for only a few short weeks. There was only time to pass one item. The Affordable Care Act.
Every bill since then has been blocked and obstructed by a Republican do-nothing Congress. They promised 'jobs jobs jobs' in 2010 and have proposed nothing but abortion bills and blocked any effort on part of the Dems.
Your talking points are tired and only fool those ignorant about the political process.
you have no concept of time. Btw are you saying that at those few short weeks that the most important issue was health care. Its called out of touch. It explains:
Dangerous: Whatever.... Let's see:
"Do nothing congress" check
"obstructed" check
"affordable care act" check (snicker snicker on that one)
Who is using talking points? You also might want to read my post before replying. Never mentioned supermajority--only that they had both houses. Seems like only half of your chosen name is true...
I leave it to you to decide which half. Have a great day.
Gary- Got a bad case of OCD, sorry must be tough! What about stopping the welfare for oil co's? Stop now!
We, the citizens, will wind up paying more if those subsidies are dropped. What are they for? To search and develop more sources, research and development of alternate energy sources...they have the expertise and scientists who are working on this. This is nothing more than election year claptrap by our President, who does not understand how the economy works...how many jobs will be lost if these are dropped?
This is a good first step. However, I would like the President and the Congress to consider a law that would prohibit the exportation of oil that is either found, or refined in the US until certain (to be determined) benchmarks are met. Chief among them, that we are not importing oil.
I agree with the production points you make to be sure, but I think the Chargeers will get a new stadium LONG before that policy is ever enacted.
Dang. I meant chargers of course...
I don't know. Between the play of the Chargers lately and the demand that the city/county foot a significant part of the construction...you may never see the Chargers in a new San Diego stadium. Hopefully, someone in our government one day figure out it is detrimental to US consumers when oil that is found or refined here is shipped to another country.
Bam Bam's making sure that gas price gets to $5+ per gallon!! Does he really not think the oil companies will raise the prices to make up the difference? They will ALWAYS make their price margins...they don't care at who's expense.
He wants the price to go up. That is the plan he and Steven Chu (Secretary of Energy) have hatched to try and force us all into driving "green" cars, taking the bus and putting ineffective solar panels on our houses. No to mention the paybacks to his political supporters. Think Solyndra.
And if raising the price of something until it is ASTROMICALLY too expensive worked to stop people from doing it, we would be a smoke free America.
And Anheuser Busch, Miller and Coors would be not so healthy.
outrageous government "giveaway"
Which welfare program are we talking about?
Well we can see how the oil companies will show Obama not to mess with their corporate welfare...they'll still be making their record profits...as the rest of pay for it...
You should go take an economics class somewhere other than a home study college or Princeton. That is if you can read and comprehend material that any intelligent Rutabaga can master.
Of course the oil companies record profits are much more reasonable than a company like Apple or Microsoft. They have been ripping consumers off for decades.
To..bfitz"""
What...where am I wrong ..
It just more hypocritical campaign rhetoric.... B.O. knows people are pissed at oil companies.... so now he pretends to be pissed at oil companies. He must really think Americans are dumb as dirt, its understandable though considering the flock that bows to him.
$4 Billion for all of the oil and gas companies combined.... Yet Obama gave GM $14 BILLION in tax breaks alone, on top of the bailout money.

The subsidies hold the price of gasoline DOWN. So, here we are 8 months before the election and Odumbass DEMANDS an increase in gas prices.
Obama Demands, Libtards Tremble and Conservatives Laugh.
Subsidies hold the price down...really...and you buy into this logic.
Amazing, the price of gas is down because the oil company's just collect the profit from the subsidies. they don't have to charge more because the government pays them.
The logic is reasonable - here is an industry making good profits while receiving healthy subsidies from a government that cannot afford to pass out subsidies. Sounds like it is also time to end the agricultural subsidies. Most of those go to huge corporations, and some of them go to landowners who are not even farming the previously registered land now (church parking lots and such.)
Especially the subsidies going to big TOBACCO!!!
I agree that we should get rid of oil and gas subsidies. The government shouldn't be giving "subsidies" to any companies. But we shouldn't get rid of their subsidies, unless we are willing to get rid of the subsidies for their competition as well. To do one without the other just looks like partisan politics.
I don't think Obama is out of line. The Billions that oil companies are make are suppose to go towards oil exploration, etc. The Republicans want the American people to give them a free ride. So lets look at this logically; the tax payer is to give oil companies millions in free money so the oil companies can make billions.
Now did I understand that right?
Put America First--I do not have any real problem with getting rid of all the subsidies. BUT (and this is a HUGE but--) ONLY if that money is used to pay down the deficit, NOT to increase the buying of votes (oops, I meant 'entitlement' giveaways).
Please Google "commodity futures and modernization act " Once Phil Gram and John McCain and other Right Wingers were able to remove all oversight from the commodities market. The big banks like Goldman Sachs and Citibank and UBS, were free to buy up and hold so much of the market that they could accurately control the American price at the pump. Take a look at the facts:
demand is down
Supply is in abundance
America is a net exporter.
Prices are going through the roof.
This tells us that a few are hurting our economy in a big way and its all American. No, its not the Arabs, or Woodsey the owl or the EPA or the Gulf tensions or the little oil Gremlins or the President.
We must insist that congress stop stalling and begin enforcing Dodd Frank and Voca ASAP. Our economy needs help and this will be a good start. Only producers should buy oil and others should be vastly limited on how much.
Demand is down because of the economy, not Obama's policies. Production on state and private lands is up by 26% combined because Obama has no authority over the leases on those lands. On federal lands, where he does have authority, production is down 11% because of his moratoriums. Same for leases on off shore drilling.Obama's policies on oil and gas are hurting the economy.
Bella, thank you. You are the only one that has pointed that out all day. I haven't had time to get on and say as much. Some people will beleive anything they are told, rather than pay attention to what is really going on. I wondered what happened a few months ago when they were talking about speculators and the prices went down for a little while.
I live in Alaska and oil is being pumped out daily. That doesn't keep our price at the pump low. No, wh have the highest gas prices in the country. No one talks about that in the national media though. We have gas in some parts that are as high as $8.00 a gallon. Here in Anchorage it is over $5.99. Last few years South America has been donating oil to the villages because no one really make it an issue. It's sad the way the oil companies operate.
Polar bear--the reason you Alaskans have the highest gas prices is because you have NO refineries.
And you can thank the environmental Nazi's for THAT, too.
