Romney holds off Santorum in Michigan, easily wins Arizona

Mitt Romney comfortably won the Republican presidential primary contest in Arizona, but the former Massachusetts governor only narrowly won his home state of Michigan. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

Updated 11:05 pm ET: NOVI, Mich. -- Mitt Romney won primary victories in Michigan and Arizona Tuesday night, staving off Rick Santorum in a closely-fought contest here in a state where Romney was born and raised and avoiding an embarrassing setback for his campaign.

Romney won the Michigan primary by just a few percentage points, while scoring a victory by much larger margins in Arizona.

The crowd at the Suburban Collection Showplace in suburban Detroit burst into cheers as cable news on projection screens reflected the projection in Michigan.

Romney's victory in Michigan carries symbolic importance after the contest had been transformed into a key test of his strength as the campaign's frontrunner. He'll also end up with the lion's share of delegates awarded tonight since Arizona allots its delegates on a winner-take-all basis. Romney will win two delegates statewide in Michigan, and an additional three delegates for each of the state's 14 congressional districts he wins.

Romney made sure to stress both his victories Tuesday night, thanking voters in Arizona and Michigan and calling it a “great victory.” Referring to Michigan, Romney said, “We didn’t win by a lot but we won by enough and that’s all that counts.”

Romney hit on familiar themes of restoring American greatness and his Michigan roots during his speech. But in a nod toward the changing dynamics of the race, Romney solicited donations through his website -- something he hasn't mentioned previously in similar speeches.

NBC's David Gregory and Chuck Todd parse the GOP primary results in Arizona and Michigan and look ahead to next week's Super Tuesday races.

A bigger haul of delegates are at stake in just a week, however. The Republican campaign will now move into its next pivotal stretch preceding Super Tuesday, when 10 states host primaries or caucuses.

The results follow a tumultuous three weeks that had featured both candidates fighting for momentum in the Republican nomination contest. Most of the attention was focused on Michigan, where the results could prove to be a turning point in the race.

Romney romps among nearly all groups in Arizona primary

In Michigan, the state where Romney was born and raised and where his father served as governor, the on-again, off-again front-runner had to wage a tougher-than-expected campaign to avoid an embarrassing loss to Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator. Santorum had carried momentum into the state after sweeping a trio of mid-February nominating contests, and pointedly deciding to challenge Romney on his home turf.

Crossover Democrats overwhelmingly back Santorum

"To the people, you know we came to the backyard of one of my opponents ... and the people of Michigan looked into the hearts of the candidates, and all I have to say is, I love you back," Santorum said in remarks at his campaign night party on the western side of Michigan.

Presidential hopeful Rick Santorum falls short in Michigan and Arizona primaries but says his stances on the deficit, oil production and health care make him the best candidate to challenge President Barack Obama.

While Arizona was only lightly contested by the candidates, Michigan was a different story.

Romney had barnstormed the state in stops meant to remind voters of his roots here, and taken a newly-aggressive tack against Santorum on the campaign trail. His campaign and a supportive super PAC added support by spending over $4 million combined on advertising.

But unlike other instances in which Romney’s Republican challengers had been unable to respond, Santorum’s campaign and a similarly supportive super PAC spent over $2 million in response. The former Pennsylvania senator also aggressively went after Romney on the campaign trail, framing Romney as a poor choice for conservatives to face off against President Obama.

The primary voters in Michigan broke along familiar patterns. Voters who considered themselves just somewhat conservative, and voters who valued electability as the top characteristic in a candidate tended toward Romney. He also performed best among wealthier voters.

Santorum performed best among the most conservative voters in the GOP, and outperformed Romney among more middle-class Republicans. Union households broke for Santorum, and the Democrats who did vote in the primary -- they made up about nine percent of the electorate, according to exit polls -- favored Santorum.

The exit poll results suggested, though, that red flags continue to exist for Romney. The former Massachusetts governor still struggles in winning over the very conservative core of the Republican Party, and faces challenges in winning over GOP voters of lesser means. That latter factor does little to diminish a narrative about Romney's difficulty in connecting with voters.

A loss for Romney could have threatened to provoke new hand-wringing from the GOP’s establishment class about the viability of the former Massachusetts governor’s candidacy. Romney has long been thought of as the Republican frontrunner, but his struggles to string together wins in the primary season threaten to drag the battle for the nomination into a protracted delegate fight.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul are poised to re-emerge as contenders in some of those Super Tuesday contests, and states like Ohio may well pose the next test of whether Romney or Santorum gain any sustained momentum out of tonight’s results.

Arizona and Michigan are both considered potential battleground states come November, and the president’s re-election campaign has acted aggressively to bracket primary results in both states this evening. The president’s campaign ran ads here in Michigan promoting the administration’s decision to assist GM and Chrysler in 2009, and Obama himself reminded the autoworkers’ union of the Republican candidates’ opposition to the bailout in a campaign-style speech today.

First Read: Is Arizona in play for Team Obama?

“And you will recall there were some politicians who said we should do that,” Obama said of many Republicans’ resistance to providing help to the troubled automakers. “Some even said we should ‘let Detroit go bankrupt.’”

Romney and Santorum each provided the Obama campaign with fodder for the general election, too, from Romney’s comments about his wife owning two Cadillacs or being friends with NASCAR team owners, to Santorum’s calling the president a “snob” for supporting a policy advocating higher education for young people.

This race is truly hilarious. Ramney paid for Gangrich and Santorum for President. Every Super Pac ad was signed sealed delivered by Ramney for President. Truly priceless. If this is the guy the Establishment wants to run, then by all means get to running!!!

I have to hand it to them, they have proven Zealotry is fashionable.

So are we to deduce that it is high gas prices that is causing Obama's approvals to erode?

Just two weeks ago over at RCP's average he was +5. He's now -.3.

Man, what's gonna happen when the fun we are having here [regular unleaded $4.45] spreads across the country?

Shoot I just hope Feisty's popcorn supplier will still be able to make expenses. The old gal gets mighty grumpy when denied her tasty treats.

Did you see Santorum's NASCAR this weekend? In a press release, the campaign said, "NASCAR and the Daytona 500 are about as American as you can get, and it's great to have my campaign represented by one of these incredible machines."

Well, here's the thing...the car that Rick Santorum sponsored was a Ford Fusion...the street-version of which is assembled in Hermasillo, Mexico!

Hey, Rick, cómo está usted?

I'd like to share a few excerpts from an essay written for the Daily KOS called "A Voice from the 1%"

"The [idea] that the rich are getting ever richer while everyone else suffers - was confirmed by a recent report from the Social Security Administration showing that while total employment and average wages remained stagnant, the number of people earning $1 million or more grew by 18% from 2009 to 2010. yet Republicans continue to insist, despite all evidence to the contrary, that if anything those "job creators" deserve an even greater share of our national income."

"The one group rarely heard from in this rancorous debate is the 1%, whose incomes and taxes are its focus. I am one of them, and here is my perspective, which may surprise you."

"imagine my amazement this summer when I watched the Republicans in Congress push the United States to the brink of default - and the world to the brink of ruin - over whether to repeal a portion of the Bush tax cuts and raise my taxes by 3.5%."

"Here is a secret about rich people: we wouldn't have noticed a 3.5% tax increase. That is not only because there isn't a material difference between having $1 million and $965,000, which is obvious, but also because most of us don't actually know how much money we are going to make in a given year. Most income at that level is the result of profits rather than salary, whether it comes in the form of bonuses, stock options, partnership distributions, dividends or capital gains. Profits are unpredictable and they tend to vary wildly. At my own firm, the general rule of thumb is that if we are within 5% of our budget for the year, everyone is happy and no one complains. A variation of 3.5% is merely a random blip."

"I was not amazed but disgusted when John Boehner and his crew tried to justify the extremity of their position by rebranding the wealthy as "job creators." While true in a very basic sense, it obscures the fact that jobs are a cost that is voluntarily incurred only as a result of demand. Hiring has no correlation at all to profits or to income - none. Let me keep more of my money without increasing customer demand and I will do just that - keep it. Perhaps I will spend a little more of it, though probably not, but even if I do it won't help the economy very much. Here is another secret of the well-to-do: we don't really buy much more stuff than everyone else. It may be more expensive stuff, sure, but I don't buy cars, or appliances, or furniture, or anything else more frequently than the average consumer. The things I do spend more money on are services such as travel, entertainment, restaurants and landscaping, none of which generate well-paying middle class jobs. There, in a nutshell, is the sad explanation of what has happened to the American economy over the last 25 years of "trickle down" economics."

"there is no question that the increasing income inequality in our society is a bad thing, in the short-term and the long-term, for both workers and for business. It is bad in every way and for everyone, with the sole exception of Wall Street itself."

"My family is from one of the poorest counties in the country, in rural Appalachia. My grandfather was a coal miner who left school after 5th grade to help support his impoverished family. My grandmother wasn't allowed to attend high school because according to her parents women didn't need an education. I never knew my father. My mother and I subsisted on food stamps for several years. I got my first job at 13, working as a bus boy for $2 an hour, and I have never been unemployed in the 37 years since. I worked my way through college, which I paid for myself. When I started my career I worked 60+ hour weeks every week for nearly 15 years before that effort began to pay off. I employ nearly 20 people, I have no debts, and I have no doubt that I have earned every penny I have."

"And yet, I am living proof of Elizabeth Warren's maxim that no one gets rich on their own. If not for the UMWA helping to secure a living wage for my grandfather, I would probably have had to leave school to help support my family, as he had done. If not for my grandmother's passionate belief in the value of the education she was denied I would never have aspired to go to college at all, and if not for my mother teaching me to love books, I would never have been able to succeed there. If not for my wife I would never have been inspired to work as hard as I did to see what I could become in life. How many smart, talented children don't have those positive influences? How many have exactly the opposite?"

"I understand too that but for food stamps, I would have gone hungry as a child, that but for public subsidies and federally guaranteed loans I could never have afforded college. I know that without the internet and airports, both of which were developed with federal taxes, I could not earn an income even close to what I make today. That all seems so obvious to me that I don't understand how anyone could question it, and those are just a few of the many reasons I am happy to pay my fair share of taxes, whatever that share maybe. Paying a lot of taxes just means you make a lot of money, and it is hard, frankly, to complain about that."

"Many of the [Tea Party] crowd seem quite proud of their Christian faith. I am not religious myself, but I am reasonably certain that Jesus would not respond to the poor and unemployed with shouts of "Get a job!""

First off, Obama's media giants never ran the story of the BIG LOSS of over $500 Billion to the the solar power energy plant in CA. Obama gave them the money and they went bankrupt. Over $500B. Then he turns around, last month, and is giving his bro's in Afghanistan a few billion to help them out. Oh well. He is Commander in chief. He can give money away like it's paper, but how weak can he be as a Commander in Chief to let the gas prices head towards the sky? He could stop it very easy, but as I said. He is a "lame duck" of a President.

Skipster Neither Obama nor anyone else gave $500B (Billion) to Soyndra as you stated. They did a loan guarantee of $535 MIllion...1/1000th of what you stated. If you are going to spout off at least get remotely close to the truth.

They had a good products and a good idea...proven in that there are over 1000 of their systems installed. They were being undercut by cheap Chinese competitors and simply ran out of money at a critical time, they were also hurt by the worldwide economy cutting into orders.

Every bet does not work out, this one was very promising. It was covered by every major media outlet. It was all over the news. The exit poll results suggested, though, that red flags continue to exist for Romney. The former Massachusetts governor still struggles in winning over the very conservative core of the Republican Party, and faces challenges in winning over GOP voters of lesser means.

Not really. When the dust settles the Republicans will close ranks and support the winner. Just as the Dems did when they closed ranks for Obama (you do remember the tussle with Hillary Clinton, right?) Simply put, Republicans will support whoever is running against Barry.

This article pretty much says it all:

It is curious that the American Right, which waxes nostalgic for the happier days of the 1950s when the United States was supposedly more moral and more united, ignores one of the central reasons behind that middle-class era: very high taxes on the rich.

Granted, some on the Right may love the Fifties because it was a time of racial segregation and second-class status for women. But what arguably made the era work was the fact that the US tax structure "disincentivized" greed by ensuring that excess wealth was mostly recycled back into the Treasury for use building the nation and supporting research and development.

During Dwight Eisenhower's presidency the top marginal tax rate - what the richest Americans paid on their top tranche of income - was around 90 percent. In the 1960s, under John F. Kennedy, that was lowered to around 70 percent, but that rate still meant the rich had a limited incentive to be greedy since they wouldn't get to keep most of their extra money.

All that changed with Ronald Reagan's presidency and his slashing of the top marginal tax rate by more than half (before it was adjusted upward slightly late in Reagan's years and then during Bill Clinton's presidency before being reduced again to 35 percent under George W. Bush).

Various tax loopholes and lower rates for capital gains also have let many of the richest Americans enjoy tax rates about only half of even those lower marginal income tax rates. Billionaire Warren Buffett has famously described paying a lower tax rate than his secretary, meaning that he and others in his category get to keep about 80 percent of what they make In other words, the American tax structure has been roughly turned on its head. From the rich paying between 70 and 90 percent on their top income, some now pay 20 percent or less, which means there is a much bigger incentive to be greedy.

Arguably, it was that incentivized greed - more than any of the social movements like civil rights for blacks and equal rights for women - that eradicated the rhapsodized Fifties and the middle-class culture that it represented in the nostalgic view of many Americans.

So, it's ironic that the defense of lower tax rates for the rich is at the heart of the Right's current political agenda. Some leading Republicans have even suggested that "tax reform" should impose at least some income tax on the poor and working class so the tax rates on the rich can be lowered even more.

It's ironic, too, that the core of today's economic crisis is that American bankers became so excessively greedy - spurred on by the prospects of "earning" bonuses in the tens of millions of dollars and keeping nearly all that money - that they blinded themselves to the risks from exotic financial products built on an unsustainable housing bubble.

If the tax rates had been kept at Eisenhower or Kennedy levels, not only would there have been plenty of money to keep the United States modern and strong but there likely would not have been the kind of financial crisis that, since 2008, has cost millions of jobs and required massive government borrowing to bail out the greedy bankers.

Thus, in a variety of ways, the Right's orthodoxy of low taxes on the rich (or the "job creators," as Republican wordsmiths prefer) has been a major driver in creating today's massive federal debt and in savaging the middle class

Its like a bad comic book made real. I think Mittens should jump in one of his cars and go home to one of his estates and stay there. Ricky is a christian fanatic whose platform seems to be the taking of rights from women. He can go home too. The other two can go away as well.

TNT, just google TEA Party bigotry and I guarantee you'll find all the facts you need.

My 8 year old was watching the news with me and asked 'why does Romney always win?'

    I said 'because he's rich.'

She asked, 'why isn't president obama winning?"

'It's a primary and the winner will contest the president then...'

I went on to explain that the prez is every four years and she queried, 'so there was another before obama?'

    'Yeah, he is hiding.'

    'Why is he hiding daddy?'

'Because he was a very bad man pumpkin... a very bad man, and when people are bad, they hide from the rest of the world...'

That was a great conversation.... :^)

How can anyone even consider voting for Santorum? He is the most anti-American radical crazy I have seen in many years.

He spews flat-out lies about what Obama has said, has done, and wants to do, and no one in the so-called liberal media calls him on it. Why? I think it's because they're so entertained by his wacky, delusional comments.

It's scary though. What if this Nazi (I know, that word is supposed to be off-limits anymore, but look into it- his attitudes, his tactics, the wild-eyed wonder on the faces of his acolytes) actually wins? Everyone says he can't possibly beat Obama in the general election, but look at how many of these neanderthals the tea baggers shoved down our throats in the off-year election.

It's kind of like the movie "Idiocracy"- there are more of them than there are of us. That's what Santorum's super-PAC is advertising on the radio here in AZ.

I know, Romney's not anything to fall in love with. Believe me, republicans, I suffered with John Kerry in '04. But, come on, you can't let this mouth-breathing caveman drag us back into the 16th century! If you're a republican, get out and vote, please! And vote for Romney.

If you are making over that and only care for yourself then I could certainly see why you would want one of these canidates to win.

Republican tax cuts for the wealthy provided Americans making more than $1 million with a $128,832 benefit, while Americans earning from $40,000 to $50,000 got an $860 benefit on average.

Sound fair to you? NO? That's because it isn't. The deck is already stacked against the poor and middle-class and these jokers want to make it even more unjust.

I know, Glenn Beck tells you that the Nazis were socialists. It's just not true. They originally put that in their party name because in the early days, they were competing with communists for members.

If you actually study the history (which I have extensively), you will see that their control of all aspects of society was total. That doesn't make them socialists, it makes them totalitarians. They were on the extreme opposite end of the political spectrum from socialists.

The nazis had jews to blame all their troubles on. The tea baggers have illegal aliens.

The nazis dialed up the rhetoric on everything and made the German people think the world was ending. Sound familiar?

The nazis had an extreme, one-way-only view of the world, and there was no room for any disagreement from any side. Sound familiar?

The nazis re-wrote history to suit the political messages they wanted to promote. Have you seen Santorum's quotes on President Kennedy and Dr. King?

Try reading a book instead of burning one. You might learn something.

How anyone can support Obama is puzzling...he did nothing as an elected official in the state legislature in Illinois and has shown his total lack of leadership and understanding of his position. He has never workedan honest day in his life, he doesn't know what it takes to create jobs. They are not created with a stroke of a pen but with providing a product or service which a customer finds desire able.

Early in his administration he turned 21% of our nations economy upside down with his health care reform which ironically excluded any tort reform. An interesting thought is why did Obama in his health care reform he requires the insurance industry to commit 80% of every dollar collected in premiums to go towards claims on groups less than 50 and on groups greater than 50, 85% of every dollar. How efficient do you think the government is with its agencies? Less than 10% of our tax dollars collected go to the cause...that's government efficiency.

Look at the oil production...yes the production is up since Obama took office but it is soley on the private side as Obama has significantly reduced or closed public lands to oil production. Obama's policies hurt the nation on two fronts...the first by reducing the supply which naturally raises the prices as there is a greater demand for the product than supply...econ 101...the second is the reduction in income for the country through reduced or eliminated royalties and taxes...thus increasing the deficit.

I guess there is a lot of truth in common sense not being so common...

Mike, supply side economics has never fixed the debt.

Furthermore, you haven't actually said why the Affordable Care Act is bad for the economy. The economy improved far more under Obama than it did under Bush.

As for oil production, Obama has increased oil supply and decreased oil demand. Econ 101.

Finally, you never responded to the point I made about dozens of bills passed by the Democrats that were rejected by Republicans.

TNTTony7 if you think race is not an issue with this president, just drop by Texas and other southern states, set yourself down in a seat at a bar or someone's house and listen. When I have to as people to shut up or leave my house when they holler "get that "N..." out of the White House", there's clearly racial prejudice involved. Anyone who thinks there isn't is in serious denial.

I do not believe that all who disagree with him do so on a racial bass, but the public disrespect that has been sown this president has never happened before. Joe Wilson and Jan Brewer are two just high profile examples. While I don't believe it's the main factor for most who disagree with Obama, race it is clearly and definitively in the mix.

cmstubbles, funny how you didn't respond to my post but only said "the other side is doing things too". As for jobs bills, as far as I know, the House rejected all of President Obama's jobs bill proposals. All of the Republican proposals drastically reduced the top income tax bracket or undid important regulation that keeps consumers safe.

Nothing excuses the Republican's opposition to better pay for women, safer water for consumers, stronger and more efficient national security, etc (http://pleasecutthecrap.typepad.com/main/a-small-sampling-of-bills-house-dems-passed-gop-senate-blocked-last-session.html). Like:

1."Mr. Romney, explain to everybody how placing your money into shelters overseas so you can get away with paying less then 14 percent in annual taxes is helping Americans?"

2."Mr. Romney, do you send the bulk of your money overseas because you value the trade of other countries over America's, or did you send your money over there so you didn't have to pay as much in taxes as everybody else does?"

3."Mr. Romney, you like to say that you pay what you owe in taxes and not a dollar more. What if the vast majority of America thinks you should pay a lot more? Do you agree with the majority of American people and pay more taxes or tell them you don't care and don't want their votes anyways?"

      4. "Mr. Romney, do you think all Americans should pay less then 14 percent of their annual incomes to taxes, like you do, even though that would plunge this great nation into third-world status almost immediately by not being able to even pay our debt?

      5. "Mr. Romney only the rich could take advantage of loopholes you have used to insure you pay a smaller portion or your income to taxes then many Americans earning a great deal less then you do. Should that be how America's tax code works? Should rich people, like yourself, pay smaller percent of your income to taxes when people like our military, cops, social workers, firefighters have to pay a great deal more?

Can't wait for the debates with Romney versus the teleprompter, err I mean Obama. This time Obama won't be up against a wax figurine, but someone willing to fight back. I don't think Obama is going to give up the credit card that easy, he has the media in his pocket, a bunch of needy voters with their hands out, and the keys to AF1. This country will be flat broke wearing a barrel and Obama will be set for life, but if he is unemployed after January 20, 2013 there will be finally be hope for change.

"Hate talk"? What's hateful about that? Romney has made so many flagrant flubs, they're already calling them "Romneyisms." A week doesn't pass without him making an ass of himself or saying something callous, stupid, elitist, or all three. And Romney may be the most "electable" of the clown car full of GOP cast-offs, but don't let that delude you into thinking he will be elected President. Saying he's the most electable of this lot is akin to being the best casserole on the $3.99 Vegas midnight buffet.

Evangelicals have lost their way. They have been defeated. Mormons have today demonstrated that they are the new religion in the United States.

Evangelicals were too busy bickering with each other - spewing hate and bigotry toward others that they lost themselves. Left leaderless - without guidance. Now they have been replaced by Mormons.

This is but a demonstration that Evangelicals have lost their faith. They have lost their path. Allowed themselves to be divided and conquered by Mormons. Now they will be relegated to the minority.

Today - the victors are Mormons. Evangelicals have lost their way. A relic of the past.

If this comes down to one stupid religion vs another stupid religion in a race to an office which holds no religious litmus test in a country with constitutionally mandated seperation of church and state --- it would be a sign that we Americans have indeed become some of the dumbest people on the planet.

It really is amazing to read these posts. 99% of Americans are middle class/poor, and you are considering voting for a candidate that hasn't talked about creating jobs, and who thinks it's okay to cut everything geared towards helping middle class and poor people, and candidates who think its okay to tax the richest 1% lower than the middle class and poor. And we are considering Romney who hides his money overseas and who made money destroying American jobs. REALLY!!!

And then @unlv702 please don't tell me that this is about religion. So we ignore the separation of church and state? REALLY!!!

      To jon-

What has any Mormon ever done to you that you have to be so hateful and spiteful. Just so you know and will (hopefully) stop displaying your ignorance -- the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) or what non-members refer to as Mormons, does not allow plural marriage and hasn't for over 100 years.

Now, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) (these people broke with the mother church) allow plural marriage and other atrocities not in keeping with the teachings of the LDS church. The so-called "prophet" of the FLDS is the individual who is in jail for his perversions.

And, as far as I know, no member in good standing would EVER tell you anything even remotely close to what you allege your "inside source at my local ward" told you.

In other words, you lied and misdirected the conversation into something negative and divisive. This is the only way democrats will win the presidency this year. Smoke and mirrors. If you can keep people looking in the wrong direction long enough you can get away with anything, including this election.

Fact: The country is slowly turning around.

Fact: Flipomney has no experience as President no first timer has. If you say he does because this or that you are telling a bold face lie. Running a business is not like running a country and if anyone tells you its similar they are lying period.

westbury64, your no tax statement is highly misleading. I am really tired of that statement and the need to explain things to those who refuse to understand the real picture.

Many, if not most, of the wealthiest pay a lower percentage of their income in income taxes than I do, and I'm solid middle class. I paid a higher rate than Romney's 13.9%. In Texas, the lowest 5 percentile of earners paid a total of 12.5% of their income in taxes, while the top 1% paid 3% on average.

The lower earners pay payroll tax, which accounts for 40% of federal revenue. Payroll tax applies to the first $106,000 (to increase to $110K this year) in earnings. So a person earning $1 million does not pay that tax on 90% of their income.

Additionally, 485,000 people who earned between $100K and $500K paid no income tax in 2010. 14000 people who earned between $500K and $1 mil did not pay income taxes in 2010. 1400 people who earned over $1 million did not pay income tax in 2010.

Yet you folks want to gripe about the people who earned less than $50K, and most of those earned much less than $50K. Those people pay state taxes, sales taxes, excise taxes and so on. The lowest 20% of income earners average $12,500 per year. They pay 16.7% of that income in total taxes. That's $2087.50. Take that from their annual earnings and they have $867.71 a month left. Wanna trade places with them?

Now if you want to go to the poor corporations, who apparently can't afford to create jobs because taxes are too high, 30 of the top 280 corporations paid no income tax from 2008-2010. 280 of the largest companies paid an average of just over half the statutory corporate rate in those same years. Most of these firms paid more to lobbyists and political donations than in taxes.

" ... the “Dirty Thirty” particularly aggressive tax avoiders .. spent more on federal lobbying than income taxes between 2008 and 2010. Twenty-nine of these corporations actually received a net tax rebate.

But OK, let's hammer on those dirty, stealing, lying, cheating poor people trying to get by on $867.71 per month.

The difference is, Hussein ILLEGALLY handed over the bulk of the companies to his union buddies (a.k.a. campaign contibutors) and screwed over the legal bondholders. Hello?????"

I'm not sure why your post was 'collapsed', since what you say is actually quite true.

And the media 'spin' is interesting, because Romney recommended a 'structured bankruptcy', and that is exactly what Obama did - a structures bankruptcy for GM, which unfairly favored the unions over the millions of stockholders.

I guess the truth hurts the liberals, and they have to hide it by having it 'collapsed'.

bmerbob "The lower earners pay payroll tax, which accounts for 40% of federal revenue. Payroll tax applies to the first $106,000 (to increase to $110K this year) in earnings. What you overlook is that payroll taxes fund the Social Security and Medicare programs, which means workers are building up their personal retirement and health insurance accounts. That money does not pay anything towards general government expenditures for Defense, infrastructure, education, etc., etc., etc., which means the middle class and the 'rich' pay for all of the cost of running the government. Actually, since payroll taxes only cover about 40% of the actual cost of Medicare/Medicaid, the middle and 'rich' class also pay the other 60% of that as well for the 50% who pay no income taxes.

One last point in this regard - Roughly half of the people who pay no income tax but do pay payroll taxes to fund their retirement and health care requirements actually don't even do that, because they get 'Earned Income Credits' that actually offset the money they supposedly put into their 'retirement accounts', so they indeed get the retirement benefits but pay absolutely NOTHING in taxes to fund the $12,500 per year in benefits the average American gets from Federal spending ($3.8 Trillion in spending divided by 310 million Americans).

As for those few 'rich' who pay no income taxes, there is a simple solution - do away with all of those 'credits' that are used to offset regular taxes - like the $25 Billion that Obama has put in place to encourage 'green energy', along with the $4 Billion in 'subsidies' for oil companies that were intended to encourage domestic production and lessen our dependence on foreign oil.

The TRUTH is far different from the 'SPIN", when you look at the details, huh.

And bmer Bob, have You ever owned a company ? I don't own a huge corporation, but I pay about 50 cents on every dollar in tax's, when you take into account, payroll tax's, franchise tax's, property tax's, sales tax's, federal tax's, ss, medicare bla bla bla. How much more do I have to pay to make the liberals happy ? Is it 60 70 percent, when 50% pay nothing ?

I agree, commonsense, and let's not forget the good Jews, Muslims (YES! they do exist!), Protestants, evangelicals (YES...they exist too!), Buddhists, agnostics and atheists (YES, their numbers are growing) while we're at it. Sorry if I left anyone out.

All Americans of good will want a good person in the oval office. My advice is to look to both the candidates' words and their records to decide who is intelligent, moral, honest, compassionate, reliable, and tolerant. We need someone who represents ALL of us. Proclaiming a faith and living it are two very different things (are you reading this, Newt?)

To make one's personal religious beliefs a centerpiece of his/her campaign is a sure-fire strategy for failure (are you reading this, Rick?) There is no one religion in this country that completely dominates all others, and that is exactly as it should be.

                Wow, poor blind party loyalists.

I won't call you liberals, because no true liberal could support Obama, based on his own actions.

Why do you think Hilary refuses to work with him after this term?

Seems you're not doing so well today, the first 4 threads are all collapsed!

Just thought I'd share another poll with you. Seems like Obama is not getting quite the rise in support that MSN claims, at least not everywhere else. Oh yeah, this poll is from yesterday.

                http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/213055-gallup-obamas-approval-rating-falls-sharply

In related news, the dictator in chief now has to pass laws so people will stop protesting against him. The Constitution be damned, we can't have these peasants voicing thier displeasure in public!

                Constitutional scholar my a$$.

Google "HR 347". It would be funny if it wasn't so scary.

The Patriot act now belongs to Obama. He said he would repeal it, instead he expanded and extended it. It is now Obama's Patriot act.

Obama signed into law the NDAA, in clear violation of his oath to uphold the Constitution.

He said he would close Gitmo. He's now building a 750k soccer field for the inmates. Doesn't sound like he's planning to close that anytime soon, huh?

His "payroll tax cut" defunds SS. He stole 29 billion from foodstamps to give to the states to "save or create" jobs. His HRCA stole 500 billion from medicare. He could order the troops home anytime, instead he put boots on the ground in 4 new African Nations this week alone.

Anybody claiming to be liberal who supports Obama has clearly not been paying attention.

End the wars, bring the troops home, restore fiscal sanity to our currency and our government, free all prisoners in federal penitentiaries for minor drug offenses,

These are all ideas that used to be part of the liberal agenda. Before Obama twisted it into a dark vision of government control.

No true liberal could support Obama

Romney looks good now--but betting there will be a "Dark Horse" in the end for the GOP, as the "Candidate to run for President of the United States against Obama.

It is a name that is used over and over again.

                It will be interesting.

Herman Cain was the dark horse but he is gone now. Republicans aren't much interested in dark horses. They would go to see "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". They would not go to see "Coal Black and Seven Pygmies".

Sorry, but if the republican party is really serious about ousting Obama, they should probably get their voters on board with Ron Paul. He's the only candidate that's going to be able to draw votes from both sides of the political spectrum. Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum all represent groups that the left simply will not vote for: rich/religious, rich, and religious. My big question is why is the primary goal getting Obama out of office? Shouldn't their goals be to improve the economy, eliminate waste, and increase government efficiency? The whole party needs to realize that the election should be about presenting ideas for the future, not getting rid of an incumbent. Let plans and actions speak to your electability.

Republicans with an interest in the country? I know it was that way before Reagan but certainly not anymore. The republican majority in the house votes against their own ideas if Obama agrees. Power is the sole ambition of the republican party today. I don’t know how much of it is racist because they hated Clinton too. A booming economy with low unemployment and a strong middle class are things the republicans can not tolerate.

It doesn't matter really whether Romney wins Michigan or not since we know there were Democrats going to vote in the Michigan Republican primary just to mess with Romney. We will be especially interested in the returns from Detroit. The big Obama BS about Republican not wanting to bail out the car companies is a farce since those car makers make most of the car parts over seas and only assemble the cars here. Toyota makes more of thier cars here than the so called American car companies do. The GM company still owes us billions that we got in stocks. The American government is not supposed to own car companies. But then anyone who supports Obama would not know enough to realize the stupidity of that.

                  Well here's the thing:

                  - First off, anyone can vote in the other parties primaries, if they change party affiliation early enough (say 2 months before the primary or so). Anyone who follows this would know when they are for their state, along with the registration/change party affiliation deadlines... So the difference, though there in Michigan, isn't necessarily completely absent in other states.

                  - Many people aren't necessarily die hard dems or repubs anyhow. There are independents who simply register for a party for no other reason then to get the ability to vote in primaries; not because they're ideologically in agreement with necessarily either party platform accross the board

                  - Romney might have upset people in Michigan with his stance on the auto-bailouts, and though one can make issue with Obama mentioning that; that really does fall in the matter of politics. This really isn't different then when Gingrich brings up Bain capital, or Romney brings up Gingrich's ethics charges in Congress. It's politics, and they all play dirty. That said, take a strong stance, and one's likely to upset someone; and if many auto-workers who happen to work in Detroit don't like Romney's position; that might motivate them to vote against him regardless

                  - It is true, and goes to show just how much many "American companies" don't necessarily side with their own workers, and how these multi-nationals have no sense of loyalty to anyone, or any country. Japanese car companies do incidently end up supporting American workers more then our own car companies do; though for economic reasons. Japan doesn't want to have to pay all the shipping and import costs; our companies would rather skimp on labor. In both cases, they're saving some money in the process; though in this one can find a bit of the Wal-Mart shopper attitude among our companies here; whereas in Japan, some things would be culturally unacceptable to them.

In this, I do kinda hate to say it; but when my father who worked for a research firm (he was a chemist); well in his generation it was heard of, ours it isn't, but he worked there 45 years before retiring. But when the company was bought out by a German company, his job actually did end up improving. In large measure, because instead of finding ways to skimp the worker over, the new German managers acted more as if they actually cared about their employees. The benefits, and everything, rather improved then anything, after the merger, as the then new German corporate heads set out to put in place improvements for the work staff as some of their first policy changes....

DEPENDS ON YOUR STATE. You would think a FEDERAL Presidential Race would be consistent across America, but nope, depends on your state. If your registered as a Dem or Rep you can only vote in the primary your registered as. HOWEVER, if you're registered as an INDEPENDENT, most states let you vote in either. REGISTER AS AN INDEPENDENT, LEAVE YOUR OPTIONS OPEN. No matter what your opinions are ALL politicians should be working their @sses off to please you. By registering as a Dem or Rep you're already doing half the work for them.

Mitt Romney beat Rick and Obama at the same time. obama was campaigning against Mitt today

and its the first time in history a sitting potus was campaigning against an opponent, in a opposition

primary. Obama is really worried about his job. His union buddies were at his rally and they were

probably getting paid to be their.

                  Mitt wins.

Mitt could take Michigan in Nov.

I am registered in two states but not as a Democrat or a Republican in either. All t hey ever ask is which ballot I want and that's what I get.

When a pollster asked how I voted, I told him by secret ballot.

When he ask if I voted Democrat or Republican I said yes (although it may have been a mix).

Let's take the power away from these pollsters!! Answer as above or lie or whatever comes to mind. Don't let them tell the rest of the country which bandwagon to jump onto.

Your being registered in two states is part of the problem with the American political system, and the reason for the cries of voter fraud. What stops you from voting "absentee" in the one state, then at the physical polls in the other state? When I registered in the USVI, they, by law, had to notify OH that I had moved and registered here. As far as I know, my name is no longer on the OH registry. Of course, I've never checked to verify that. Maybe I should and then I could cast an absentee ballot for president, hehe.

There is only one way that we will ever end this election mess. Everyone needs to join the Popular Amendment Movement (faircampaignreform(dot)us) and help circulate the two petitions below.

Petition for US Constitutional Amendment For Election Reform

We, the undersigned US citizens, duly registered voters in our respective states/territories, do hereby petition for our state to approve the following amendment to the United States Constitution by the method noted below.

                  Election Reform:
                  1. Abolish the Electoral College (Repeal Amendment 12)
                  2. ONE NATIONAL primary date to be held on the Tuesday eight (8) weeks prior to the General Election day for Congressional offices and for the President. Candidate petitions must be filed with the local/state elections boards 60 days prior to the Primary Election date. Federal election petitions shall be uniform in every state and shall include a “contract with the voters” that spells out clearly what that candidate stands for on all issues that they may have to address in elected office. They shall be held accountable in court for breach of that contract if elected and any/all terms are not met.
                  3. NO campaigning allowed for any elective federal office more than 60 days prior to the National Primary Date.
                  4. NO campaign contribution shall be donated to any candidate of more than $200 from an individual or $500 maximum from a family (spouses/children living in the same household.) No donations shall be made to a candidate more than sixty days prior to the primary date. No candidate shall contribute from their own funds more than 60% of the total donations from other private individuals.
                  5. NO campaign contribution from any PAC, corporation, union, non-profit organization, special interest group, etc. shall be allowed for any elected federal office.
                  6. NO third party campaigning (separate PAC ads, corporate ads, etc.) for/against any candidate shall be allowed at any time during or before the election season.
                  7. NO party conventions shall be held to select the presidential candidates. The selection must be done at the ballot box in the primary election.
                  8. The One Man/One Vote Supreme Court ruling shall be enforced by this Amendment, namely that NO federal candidate selection shall be by any means other than the ballot box on Primary/General Election Dates.
                  9. National Party Organizations shall NOT raise money for or donate to specific candidates of their party prior to the dates outlined above.
                  10. PAC’s shall NOT be granted tax-exempt status by the IRS, and any non-profit organization who uses their funding for political purposes shall lose their tax-exempt status.
                  11. All lobbyists shall be outlawed from influencing Congress at all times.

This amendment shall be approved ONLY by State Constitutional Conventions to be called within 90 days of this petition being submmitted to a state’s Secretary of State. A minimum of 25% of the registered voters in each state shall be required to further this petition to the respective Secretary of State.

Yes, we need campaign reform and apparently some changes in the states election laws.

In the states of Oregon and Washington (except Seattle), voting is completely done by mail. If you aren't living at that address or officially receive your mail there, it is returned to the state and you are removed from the register. If you have moved to another address, it is up to you to re-register at your new address.

If you died, the mail can no longer be delivered to you, so it is returned by the post office as undeliverable and the person is removed from the voter registration.

when you vote by mail, people have to sign the outside of the envelope. When the state election receives the ballot, it is actually a ballot inside one envelope that you place inside another envelope and sign. Your signature is compared by the state election with the signature they have on file. If it doesn't look the same, they will call you.

I have to tell everyone - this is the best way to vote. no standing in lines. You can look at your voter pamphlet and vote at home at your leisure. then drop it either in the mail or the ballot box at the post office. Particularly the rural areas - this is the best way to do it. Ask your legislators to consider it.

Good post, except that the state of Washington including Seattle, votes by mail. However there is one county that still has polls but that may have changed for all I know. If you did not recieve your ballot in
Seattle they do take it at the elections office downtown. I really like having the mail in ballot as you can drop if off a places before the election if you choose to. It makes voting easier and quicker to count.

If you want to have your voice heard you have to attend your caucus location to vote for your choice for Presidential nomination.

It is very important to let everyone know that the Washington caucus is this Saturday, March 3rd. In order to vote in this you have to physically go to your caucus location for your precinct.

Here is the link to find your precinct name and then your caucus location is:

                    Republican:at snocogop (.com) under caucus

Democrat:at the wa democrats (.org) site under caucuses

Another way to find out is through this site:wsrpcaucus.tumblr (.com)

(I hope this website show up for you. They aren't making this easy to type up for you on here. If not try a web search for the info)

Doors open at 9am at most caucus locations, and I believe they close ( just after noon) at 12:30.

Please spread the word; lots of folks don't know about this or how to vote in a caucus.

Actually, don't be so sure; though many say they will support the eventual nominee no matter who they are; not all Republicans have said this. Some have said they're tired of voting for the lesser of evils, and would just assume sit November out, if their candidate doesn't get in. I imagine many of Paul's supporters might be among that group, unless Romney or whoever were to make some rather grand gestures, like offering Paul a position in their cabinet....

I personally hoped Romney would win both states, which apparently He has. While I would never vote for Romney, the man at least, is sane. Flip flopper, crooked as a dogs hind leg, etc.,but sane. Now, we can all find renewed hope in the sanity of the American people. That should be a great relief to all who work for the betterment of this country and equality for all. Santorum and Gingrich both, suffer from certain mental deficiencies that render both certifiably insane. The evidence of those maladjustive mental conditions have been revealed through the rantings of both men thoughout this campaign, yet, too damn many havn't noticed, and some have even voted for them. That was, and remains worrisome for the country as a whole. let us hope the country is not in a definite trend toward total national insanity. Ron Paul is solidly as He has been, lo, all these years. Entered the world "breech" and is proud to state, "he has never, and will never look forward". Now, I shall continue my commitment to the reelection of "President Obama".

If President Obama hid millions in offshore accounts the way Romney does, he would be absolutely crucified!

You need to hold a working position in the private sector to have the opportunity for wealth accumulation.

I would be glad to find that you are a felon that can't vote because you have no clue how the process works.

And who says Romney will say anything to get your vote!

                                Well, Romney does!

Here are some Romney quotes. Remember, he says he's not a "flip-flopper".

Flip 1: "Roe v. Wade has gone too far."

Flop 1: "I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it."

                                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flip 2: "I respect and will protect a woman's right to choose."

Flop 2: "I never really called myself pro-choice."

                                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flip 3: "I've been a hunter pretty much all my life."

Flop 3: "Any description of my being a hunter is an overstatement of capability."

                                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flip 4: "It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam."

Flop 4: "I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there."

                                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flip 5: "I'm not trying to return to Reagan-Bush."

Flop 5: "Ronald Reagan is... my hero."

                                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flip 6: "I will work and fight for stem cell research."

Flop 6: "In the end, I became persuaded that the stem-cell debate was grounded in a false premise."

                                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flip 7: "I think the minimum wage ought to keep pace with inflation."

Flop 7: "There's no question raising the minimum wage excessively causes a loss of jobs."

                                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flip 8: "I like mandates. The mandates work."

Flip 10: "This is a completely airtight kennel mounted on the top of our car."

Flop 10: "They're not happy that my dog loves fresh air."

Flip 13: "I'm not in favor of privatizing Social Security or making cuts."

Flop 13: "Social Security's the easiest and that's because you can give people a personal account."

                                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flip 14: "Based on the numbers of American Muslims... I cannot see that a cabinet position would be justified."

You are simply quite immature, and that is not partisanship, that is something any intelligent person of any persuasion can agree on.

Your trite dismissiveness is a sign if ignorance and is childish to say the least...either contribute or be gone.

You chant the same mantra over and over, reminds me of some farm animals saying "Four legs good, two legs bad' over and over as they cannot grasp any complex concepts.

Come back when you can make an argument, not a bumper sticker. It is boring.

Oh "Shaking my head because I'm stupid": I like republicans who not only make things easy, but also make them funny :)

Don't you love it when you say something negative about a republican canidate, doesn't matter how big it is or how complicated, they always have that one idiot in the crowd, who obviously doesn't know a whole lot about anything, stand-up and yell something at the top of his lungs so small and idiotic that even fellow republicans scratch their head saying, "well that's stupid!"

"Romney lied about that. Flipped flopped over that. Sent money overseas to pay less in taxes then American's making far less then he does. Wrecked jobs. Closed businesses"

And here comes the idiot, right on cue:

"Oh yeah, well Obama once ate a meal without saying a prayer. He worships satan and that proves it! I'm voting Romney!! WOOT WOOT WOOT!!!"

Then gallups away on his little imaginary horse into the sunset....

Don't worry! Cause no matter who becomes the GOP candidate, President Obama is going back to the White House, its in the bank.

Against this line up; that might well be the case. However if Christie or Jeb Bush were running; I wouldn't be so quick to suggest that Obama is the likely winner. Thing is, this election is comming down to whoever people dislike less, rather then who they like more... And sadly enough, that's what many a campaign platform has come down to of late... But then this said, neither Christie nor Jeb want to run this go around; and in the end we got a whole lot of second stringers running on the Republican ticket this year....

It's difficult to reply to some of these comments as they are filled with misconceptions, irroneous information and facts, and just plain idiocy. All the Republican candidates are backed by the Very rich, corporations, oil, utilities, insurance, & pharma. They see the general election as their golden opportunity to change this Democracy we love to an Oligarchy - the rich ruling the many poor. A lot of them like to think they are part of the "elite" because they have 6-digits; but, they are as phoney as these guys running. Your money and tax breaks are worth losing Democracy - for all? Don't kid yourself, you won't win this and you aren't rich enough to be considered the "elite" and we will Not Eat Cake...We Are the People - for Democracy and will fight for it....to the end...of you and your oligarchists.

Don't worry! Cause no matter who becomes the GOP candidate, President Obama is going back to the White House, its in the bank.

Sorry Cynthia, the "bank" (IE your government handouts) will be drying out in November...better move back to the parents home gurl - Mr. BIGSPENDER OBAMA has run out of time.

Of course Obama is going to win, he is the Teflon president, nothing sticks to him. He will go to his grave blaming everyone else for everything he did or did not do. Obama can read, but not lead, and reading seems to be all his supporters care about. Because his record is a a total failure, and it will be coming home to roost real soon. Spend baby spend has doomed this country, and skyrocketing gas prices will soon usher in a period of inflation the likes of which this country has not seen in a long time.

To the ones that is blaming Obama for high gasoline prices you must have forgotten that gasoline prices were higher in summer of 2008 than they are now,I paid $4.59 for diesel today compared to $4.95 in July of 2008 and I do not believe that Obama was president in July 2008.

A couple of the above posters, and probably many voters, appear to have written in their alternate choice today. They expected to see his name the list and were disappointed.

Actually, it really doesn't matter since a majority will not vote for either. That tells thinking people, the correct choice is "none of the above". Rosanne or Paul are both better choices.

Our country did not get great by taking away from the well off and giving it to the less well off. It got great by letting those that could HIRE PEOPLE and PAY THEM do just that. We have done nothing but crash ever since we have taken the entitlement track and started using the well off employer's pocket book to do that.

As the president of the US, there are far more important and volatile things to deal with in the world every day than trying to stop the little boys from fighting over their little toys and not sharing with anyone else.

Once their hyper and immature little minds tire out, the children should put themselves to sleep...if they can even do that!

The Republicans were celebrating Clinton and Obama tearing each other up in 2008. Now the Demos are cheering the battle-royale that is going on now. Guess what? Now all of the negative press will be used up by the time the Republican winner stomps on the throats of the libs running the White House now! I think that Obama needs to start getting money together for his Presidential library. I heard there is a lot in Plains Georgia available.

The way this election is going; they don't need to officially get all the money together... They can let the super pacs do it for them and all go Karl Rove on each other's candidates. But that way, they can each claim they were above the frey and had no part in it. I'm pretty sure that Obama has a super pac, contributed to by undisclosed donations cortiousy of some Wall Street elites, no less then the various Republican nominees have.

It's all come down to a war of the respective super pacs now; and far from running out of dirt, I kinda expect the super pacs can continue raking over material, and even borrow and re-hash material used already. AKA, a little creative editing, Obama's super pac could re-use Gingrich's Bain capital jabs, re-tooled just enough to look fresh, etc.... It isn't like these super pacs or the candidates have copyrighted any of their dirty campaign lines..... And as long as all the candidates can continue to claim they have no prior knowledge of what their super pacs said, or re-hashed from other campaigns critisism of whoever; perhaps with just a little more dirt diging to re-inforce someone elses idea with just a little twist mixed in....

Nice try, Dan, but the Democratic primaries in 2008 were nothing like the savage idiocy we see going on now with the GOP. Seriously not even close, and it's laughable that you'd even try to make that assertion. The entire Republican Party is circling the drain and it's probably for the good of America that it's being hastened by this circus of a GOP primary season.

Excuse Mitt for being more successful and smart with his money then others.. Maybe if the government had made choices like Mitt we wouldn't be in this mess. At least Mitt can hold his head HIGH because he's been able to show he knows how to thrive in an economy such as this. It's just what our country needs.

Yes, Davendale, Romney is a great role model for us in these tough economic times. He made money the old fashioned way, he inherited it.

Actually Zorro, he didn't inherit it, he earned it. You should actually take the time to read about him sometime. It's a good story.

I could care less for the poor! Get off their butts and work hard, and they will likely not be poor anymore!

I work hard and I am successful, and I damned well do not plan to give anything to those who will not get off their butts and help themselves!

We got rid of one Socialist country not 20 years ago, and dow we are heading towards becoming one!

Funny thing is, the next Bush up, actually would have an advantage. Unlike George W.; Jeb doesn't sound like an idiot when he speaks. Jeb would be closer to their father, then he would be to his brother; in the public speaking department....

before you give Jeb Bush the vote ... I was living in florida when he passed the law that if you felt threatened you could shoot someone ... now don't get me wrong. I believe a person should be able to defend themselves but shortly after the vote a puppy was stabbed because the man "felt threatened" and I am sorry but feeling threatened could be a broad term obviously interpreted in very dangerous ways. I personally hope we are done with the Bush's in office ... the dad didn't do so bad but GW was the one I voted for his first term .. before the second term I was greatly disappointed in my choice.

Jeb has to much family baggage, his daughter was a prespriction drug abuser and his son an achololic does sit to well with the family values crowd.

Well as honest as I can be, no matter which party has been in control, they have played the game that has benefitted their party the best to re-electected the next term. The American people know this and seem to believe this time will be different. I really don't care which party gets elected. I only care that the things that need to be fixed get done.

Thinkingmom, I really think that none of the candidates for president, including the most obscure third or fourth party candidate could do much worse than we have now. We have a president who gives billions to countries that hate us, destroys our oil, coal and natural gas industries, and pours billions into the gaping maws of his "green" energy industries. The current president ignores the religious rights of any religion that does not agree with his extremely liberal beliefs on birth control and abortion. The basic Democratic canon.... You can believe anything you wish.... as long as you agree with them!

I was curious, though, as to why Santorum, who has 3 college degrees, would tell his constituants that a higher education is bad. He gets a higher education, then tries to dumb everyone else down? Given that data, I think Santorum is the snob.

Santorum...graduated 1980 Penn State....B.A., went on to the Univ. of Pittsburg for M.B.A, then on to Dickerson School of Law for Juris Doctorate.

Could it be that he is opposed to everyone getting an education, except HIM? Guess he thinks we're all to stupid to check this stuff out for ourselves...LMAO!!!

He is opposed to others having a College education, Rick Santorum would like an uneducated population they are easier to push around, in Santorum world he's God

I also goggled his back ground he's also a FOOL.

I bet his children will ALL attend College and get advanced degrees....Thank God for the Internet and the information we have access too....If not for a College education none of this would have been possible in Santorum world your access to information would be taken away and only used by the elite and very rich...Santorum would like to take the country back to a time when only the very rich sent their children to College. I can tell by his attitude that he is threaten by women and minorities having a College education, he appeals too the racist in the Party, he appeals too the ONE'S that have DESTROYED the REPUBLICAN PARTY, the Party of Lincoln...It was once a great party ...but has gone too FAR-RIGHT...and the IDIOTS are now running the Party...It will recover...years from now...after we have cleaned it up...and gotten rid of the Newt's and Santorum of the Party...Its time to get out the broom and clean house....If not for a College education we would NOT HAVE these profession:

                                                        Engineers

                                                        Doctor, Surgeons

                                                        Nurses, Technicians

                                                        Teacher, Professors

                                                        Math and Science

                                                        Geologist, Geophysicist

and the list goes on....the last time a I checked the College educated vote....

College is vital and it does not make a person a snob, the snobs were already snobs before they got an education...If anyone is a SNOB its SANTORUM he's the one that thinks he's better than 99% of the population....in fact he think he's better than the people he made the comment too....

Thinking Mom, I feel Mitt Romney would do a much better job than Barry! We have a Man who's only background is as a community organizer, do You know what that entails ? He has pretty much been aided by the government His entire life. He has never held a civilian job, never ran business, never ran anything but His mouth. Then You have a highly successful business Man that has bailed out a bankrupt olympics and made them profitable. A man that has built a lot of wealth, and now the liberals have Him embarrassed over his wealth. If I were Him I stand up and say He has lived the American dream and is proud of the money He has made. When You take His charitable contributions and tax's paid, I believe He has paid more than His fair share. Obama has all of You griping about the rich not paying enough, when You should worry about paying to much. The money the government brings in and waste is truly sickening. And don't tell Me Obama is for the Middle Class, if that were the case, don't You think that is who he would have in His cabinet ? Don't You ever wonder why He has all Goldman Sachs people in there ? Oh that's because He for the poor folk lol !

Tell-tale sign of the state of the Republican Party in 2012: Senator Olympia Snow declines to seek re-election, citing the gridlock in Washington. The conservatives have brought our country down, and they must be stopped. The November elections will decide if we as a nation will fall backwards with the GOP conservatives or move forward and upward with the Democrats who are committed to progress. The Four Stooges currently heading the GOP candidates for president are a sad reminder of just how sick the conservative movement really is in this country. The anti-intellectualism, anti-education conservative sentiment sweeping over our nation will bring us to second- and even third-world status before 2025 if we allow the conservatives to rule this country starting in 2013.

These are NOT Conservatives. They are poll-driven reactionaries and Theocrat zealots. I heard a comment today about Barry Goldwater--a genuine Constitutionalist Conservative. The conclusion was that if he were alive now, he'd be a Democrat, out of disgust with what his party has descended to. And that sums up everything...

Bush was just a figure head, you see, here in Texas the Governor has NO real power or authority to do any thing...Bush was not really running Texas, it was the Lt. Governor that has ALL of the real POWERS

Perhaps it would help to buy from American companies, if those self same companies didn't prefer the "made in China" label for the parts they make their stuff out of...

Also, if you do it honestly, not shady by illegal investments, putting your money out of the country and not paying your fair share of taxes like the average American has to. Anyone, like Romney, can run for President to represent this country and it's citizens if they have no conscience and don't have to look in the mirror at themselves.

I can understand your point. However there doesn't seem to be much money in this country at the moment. Investing over seas might be the smart choice. As far as Morally he also has not had any affairs, and a squeaky clean record morally. Ethically, you're right. He has a duty to pay taxes just like everyone else, but sometimes things need to be sacrificed for things to function most efficiently. I'm interested with what Romney could do with the American government. Cutting unnecessary programs and positions, and putting the country back where it needs to be economically, or at least a good start. Then we can start to focus on creating jobs. Have to fix the break in the pipe before we fix the stiff handle of the faucet.

It just shows how prejudiced the world (and you) is about religion. I wonder what is SO threatening? So, let's see, The "GREAT" JFK was Catholic. I wonder how much we heard about that? Oh, Rick Santorum is a "religious right wing nut." Really?? What you all don't get, is this whole left and right labeling is BS!! What matters most is who is going to follow the constitution, not tear it apart?! Remember that piece of history? No? Well maybe it's because our school system has "progressed" in Socialism for so long, no one knows a DAMN thing what's right for this country anymore. What a bunch of fools. "Mr. President why do you want to use Nuclear weapons on California". "Because Jesus told me to". "Jesus told me to wipe out all the sinners". The guy is no different than the religous zealots over in the middle-east except he calls his God by a different name. You can not have religous zealots in the White House. Church and State should be separate. Organized religion is notorius for trying to take away freedoms and rights from whatever factor they at the time interpet their little paperback book tells them to. Currently the gay community is in their sites to deny any rights. Prior to that it was the Black community.
