Santorum bets he connects better in Romney's home state

TROY, MI - Republican presidential candidate, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum speaks at the Americans for Prosperity Presidential Forum during a campaign stop on February 25, 2012 in Troy, Michigan.

TROY, Mich. – If Mitt Romney is counting on winning Michigan’s primary because he’s from the state, Rick Santorum is betting he’ll win here by better connecting with the state’s voters.

The former Pennsylvania senator has so far managed to battle equally with Romney in the state where the former Massachusetts governor was raised. Romney won the primary here in 2008, and had been expected to easily win again this year before Santorum upset Romney in a trio of mid-February contests.

And campaigning in the state, Santorum’s strategy has become clear. He’s courting Michigan’s broad, middle class electorate, a group that’s been affected strongly by the economic downturn, by focusing on themes of reviving manufacturing, bringing down energy prices, and crafting policies to encourage families.

RELATED: Romney faces high expectations in Michigan

“I care about the very poor,” Santorum said at a Friday night rally in Lincoln Park, a blue collar community downriver from the site of Ford’s famed River Rouge plant. “I’m a 100 percenter, not 99 versus 1.”

NBC's Ron Mott reports.

Said Len Marshick of Belleville, Mich.: “He holds the same values we do.”

Santorum is a candidate who cut his political teeth in Pennsylvania by being able to win over broad swaths of blue collar workers in that state’s most populous corners. He eked out victory in Iowa by courting those voters and the state’s social conservatives, and relied on a similar recipe to conjure upsets of Mitt Romney in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri.

“I think he’s more work, work, work – a family type of person,” said Frank Lughermo, an undecided voter who grew up in southwest Detroit before leaving the city for the suburbs after the 1960s riots. “He can relate to people in industry.”

Santorum is courting in Michigan the very voters with whom Romney has struggled to connect: the working class and social conservatives – the famous “Regan Democrats” who make up a large segment of the electorate here. Romney has fared better with wealthier voters, according to exit polls of preceding primaries, while the margins are closer among the less well-heeled.

Santorum’s effort to connect with the middle class was maybe most clear in a quip Santorum made Saturday morning before a group of conservative activists, which won him a standing ovation.

“President Obama once said he wants everybody in America to go to college,” he said. “What a snob!”

NBC Battleground Map favors Obama

Santorum’s campaigned in the state with a “Made in America” slogan more reminiscent of a union imprint than a Republican presidential campaign. He assailed Romney for having opposed the 2009 bailouts of GM and Chrysler, while, within the same time frame, supporting the Wall Street bailout.

“If you’re going to bail out one, and help your friends on Wall Street … why pick one, and not the other?” he asked, conceding in the meanwhile his own opposition to both.

But Santorum still faces challenges in driving that message home, namely his less robust fundraising and organizational infrastructure compared to Romney.

That deficit was on display Friday night, when Santorum arrived – late – in snowy conditions to address a Knights of Columbus hall that was less than half full to hear Santorum deliver a “major” address about his first 100 days in office.

Santorum laid out a 10-point plan to specify his agenda, though the specific points were sometimes lost in an especially long-winded speech, a hallmark of Santorum’s campaign style.

“Nobody is a perfect candidate, but he’s probably the most overall consistent – probably has the least ups and downs,” said Dan Fuller, an engineer for a material supplier in the auto industry.

By contrast, Romney’s campaign is more scripted – almost to a fault, judging by the cavernous backdrop for his economic address at Ford Field, remarks at which included a minor gaffe about his wife, Ann, owning two Cadillacs (a departure from prepared remarks).

First Read: Romney lays out vision in mostly empty stadium

Romney’s speeches are peppered with references to his upbringing in Michigan, a reminder to voters that his father, George, served here as governor.

Betty Ridan, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., said at Saturday’s conference that she was a longtime Romney supporter precisely because of his roots in the state. But she also described Santorum’s speech as “inspiring,” and admitted the former Pennsylvania senator would have been her second choice.

What victory may mean for Santorum is a gut sense – a feeling by Michiganders that, for all of his warts, Santorum is more representative of their needs and issues than any of the other candidates.

“You see it too often where people vote because the media tells them that this is the guy that looks like the president,” said Sister Maria of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. About a dozen of the sisters, wearing full habits, attended the Friday speech. “That doesn’t make sense to me.”

Is he running for President or Imam? Hard for this independent to tell.I personally think he is a religious radical who still has 19th century beliefs. As for Mitt I lived in New England while he was gov of taxachuettes and he's just not a choice I would make. The republican party has lost it's way and is making it almost impossible for Independents to consider any of the candidates being offered to us.

How can Santorum connect with the middle class when he is against public schools, against college educations and is for making this country into the Christian taliban where we have no religious freedom because his hypocritical actions are against what Christ teaches and are for the billionaire republicans that want to own our country and will tell everyone what to believe and what to do.

Those who love the country, our history and values should never be afraid of Christianity. Santorum is a family man who loves his country and he has the freedom according to our constitution to tell you what he believes. I appreciate that freedom to tell you what i believe. I believe that if we don't change the presidency, we will become like Greece in a couple of years and be owned by China with our huge debt. What kind of America would you like to live in? Vote Republican this year!

Actually you would benefit by electing a Republican and specially a Christian. You would have the blessings of a godlly man who cares for his country and the people and would finally be a breath of fresh air to the world! Do fear socialism. I fear the socialist party, they were the ones who opressed the Jews in Germany and they were the ones who appressed the people in Rusia, China etc. fear Socialism.!! The Christians just want to love God. I am not talking about a theocracy, The U. S. Constitution does not permit it. We are a free nation, free to have faith. You are one lucky fellow to be living in a one nation under the true God, which is freedom!

It's fine for someone to be a Christian. What is not fine is allowing state's to teach religious dogma like creationism in schools, or enforce exclusively Christian morality that oppresses gays and women. Santorum has implied that only Christians should have public options, which specifically violates Aricle VI, Paragraph 3 of the constitution, which states "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."

Furthermore, Santorum has implied that the United States is an exclusively Christian nation, and speaks out against the evils of "secularism".

Before questioning Santorum's bigotry, think about what he has had to do to soil his family's name to the degree that he has already.

I am NOT afraid of Christianity. I am afraid of religious fanatics like Santorum who wnat to jam their narrow version of Christianity down the throats of everyone else. As for your concern about debt, I suggest you check out Santorum's voting record in the House and Senate. Long story short -- he never found s spending program he didn't like.

The Republican party at this point is Ridiculous. http://pleasecutthecrap.typepad.com/main/a-small-sampling-of-bills-house-dems-passed-gop-senate-blocked-last-session.html

This is a list of bills passed by the DEMOCRATIC House of Representatives between 2009 and 2011 that failed due to just 41 REPUBLICAN votes in the senate. Many of these bills improve our national security or reduce our trade deficit, yet the Republicans still opposed them.

It is not so much the sociopath vote FOR santorum, as it is voting AGAINST the delusional views that the r/tp/con think is critical to the well being of the country. Placing him under an ever more powerful microscope that being the "leader" entails, is showing not only how flawed he is, but the entire r/tp/con agenda of party and theocracy being more important than country.

There are quite a few people, including r/d/i voters who will go to the polls in November, who believe that shining the spotlight on santorum now, is opening a lot more eyes to the fact that the r/tp/con agenda is sheer lunacy. Voting for santorum in a primary is nothing more than shedding more light on his, and his party's delusions. Splintering the party to the point of irrelevance is exactly the reason he is receiving votes. He has zero chance of winning any office, when his delusions have to face the informed independent and mainstream voters.

Yes, the GOP agenda is revealed as an attempt to install a Christian fascist dictatorship in America. If the obvious stupidity of a big, intrusive social state government, with no federal oversight, isn't enough to convince you, what do you think will happen when it comes down to declaring which Christian sects make the cut?

I used to be a Christian. At least up North I found in methodists and lutherans a kindness if not a blindness to local suffering on some level. But when I moved to the Bible belt, all I found were mean hearted or delusional people. I was appalled at the Southern Baptists' meaness and hate filled sermons, and confounded by the delusion gripping the disenfranchised pentacostal groups who were often more uneducated, severely oppressed, and seeking salvation of their communities in the church because it was their only hope. I couldn't offer anything to or futher enlighten either group, so I had to leave it behind.

I was lucky and found Native American theology, if you will. Now, in my church, I'm always surrounded by loving, family and community minded relations. There is always love and real spiritual action to create a better world for all the relations that inhabit it, not by controlling others, but by acting from our hearts.

Easy, The economy in the last three years has gotten worse. The country has lost its credibility and our future with the deficit we have is bad, really bad! If we do not turn it around, we will be sorry of the debt we have. The welfare programs will eventually collapse and there will be a social mess in our nation that will surpass the mess in Greece. The answer must be in reviving our economy, Obama does not seem to know how to do it. The Republican congress needs to balance the budget and put the brakes on the spending as they have tried to do this last year!!!!

@TellTheTruth; I do appreciate that you used the word "DISLIKE" as apposed to hate.

Religions had their usefulness in the development/evolution of some groups of our species. It conveyed security/continuance to the fragility of existence and appreciations of a consciousness for the things they appreciated in life. Some of us have broadened our perspective. We now see the difficulties religions present to the species going forward. Holding on and letting go is a difficult process!

To Tell the truth I love Jesus Christ the problem I have with most christians is that they dont practice what Jesus stood for neither do they read their bibles. Mr Santorum week made comment that the earth is here to serve us not the other way around but the bible says we are to be good steward of the earth and not rape or misuse it and it will serve us well in both Deuteronomy and Leviticus. It would seem that the environmentalist have more in common with how the earth should be treated with biblical principles than Mr Ultra Christian. To say people should consider those as snobs who advise our children to go to college when the vast majority even factories are requiring some college is down right stupid. If a person looks a him from a different perspective one would think his goal is to sabotage the mindset of the folk that are listening to him. If they follow a lot of his advice the will surely be in a bad place as with his birth control stance.Make no mistake here I am not talking about abortion of which I am against but too many babies and no education lead to the poorest quality of life and always has.

I want to preserve the freedom of this country, freedom of worship, I want less government control. I want to Live the American dream, let the rich be rich and create jobs for more Americans. The democrats are creating a welfare nation, dependent on the system. What will you do when the money taken from the rich runs out? I get it, we will be owned by China! Obama is an Imposter.

Obama is the biggest loser to ever set foot on American soil.

The only people that will vote for Obama are traitors and people that want to be SLAVES in the New World Order.

Sweet comeback, looney. He said 'take your meds', and then you told HIM to 'get off' HIS! Booyaah, you got him good.

Seriously, Jeff, where do you crazies come from. I can't stand all the nut jobs the post crap like we're becoming 'slaves' under Obama. This is offensive to those who truly have no freedom , and the memory of those who were truly enslaved. Perhaps you should move to Syria, then maybe you would better understand the liberty we enjoy in America.

If there is any modern 'slavery' in America, it is enslavement to the corporations Republicans love.

The Patriot Act, The National Defense Authorization Act, The FAA Reauthorization Act, The Government Consolidation Act, The Cosumer Financial Confiscation (Protection) Bureau and other Acts like them are all NAILS IN THE COFFIN of our rights of freedom and our Constitution, Bill of Rights and our Declaration of Independence.

Call or write your Representative and express your concern in regards to these Acts that are a threat to our Life, Liberty and our Pursuit of Happiness as well as our Constitution, Bill of Rights and our Declaration of Independence.

The patriot act-introduced by Bush-extended by Obama. The NDAA-bipartisan congressional bill that Obama protested so only signed for the duration of his term.

You are a wack job, the governments job is to protect everyone, not to protect your right to be a bigot.

LOL. A snob because Obama wants it to be possible for everyone to go to college? Santorum is so far out to lunch it can only be funny. The only reason to call someone a snob because they want the best education for everyone in the country so they can compete and so we can be educated to function in the world is someone who wants to be King and rule over everyone. People who aren't educated don't ask questions, they follow along grateful for every scrap they are thrown. What a joke this guy is. It is so hard to believe that anyone buys his crock! Time for Rick to crawl back into his cave.

We are living in the time of Revalations. The scales of time are being held in the hand of one of the Four Horseman. The one on the black horse with the red eyes. in his other hand is a rope that is tied into a noose.

On one side of the scales of time is the Age of Enlightenment where the truth shall live and the lies will die.

On the other side of the scales of time is the Age of Enslavement where the lies will live and the truth shall die.

We the people need to unite together as one to make it out of the Age of Enslavement and into the Age of Enlightenment on our way to the Promise Land.

It takes two to make one because it took two whole people to make each one of us.

1+1=1 One for all and all for one. Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. God Bless America.

Oh, Sailcat, Uncle Gar, Suzq, all. Please don't dissuade Jeffrey from speaking his thoughts; people like him provide a valuable service for people on the left, the center, and even the center-right, by confirming the utter emptiness of GOP/TP talking points and the extremeness of their policies. If anyone wants a measure of just how far out on the fringe the GOP has gone from where they once stood, google conservative columnist George Will's recent, devastating criticisms of this season's contenders for the GOP nomination. For example - Will accurately observes that the contender with the best chance of winning the nomination has the last name of "Romney" and the first name of "not." And he's thereby not endorsing Santorum either, but I'll let the readers who google Will's columns find out that for themselves (I prefer to save some surprises).

And believe me, George Will is no closet liberal; he wants the GOP to win badly, absolutely wants to end Obama's presidency. But he is a thinking conservative, in the same way that William Buckley was, something we don't see much of anymore as GOP/TP politicians all must parrot the extreme right-wing positions or face a charge of "RINO!" Of course, I'm not denying that conservatives can think for themselves or have good ideas, just that those who do are hiding in the closet until this bizarre political phenomenon runs out of steam (or votes).

It's funny to read the writhing screams of the brain-dead Republican zombies who post their reaction to Will's columns on his comment blog - sort of reminds one of the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers when the former humans, whose bodies now host alien lifeforms, react to the sight of people who are still human (horror-flick afficionados will recall their reaction to the sight of David Sutherland who managed somehow to keep from being snatched to the very end of the movie).

Well then educate me Jeffrey, I'm willing to listen, but just making assertions is not enough to convince people it's true - you have to explain WHY and HOW it can be so. For example, you believe in a secret plan to bring about the New World Order. (I've copied your post below so that other readers will know what we're talking about.)

Please explain what the freak is this NWO? It sounds very scary. WHY does the NWO want to make us slaves? How can they do that? Who's in charge of it? Obama? The Chinese? Satan? How can we know it isn't Santorum? Maggie Gallagher? Or, the pope? Can the NWO infiltrate the Tea Party just like they infiltrated the govt.? Can't they also infiltrate your bible group? How can you be sure that your own church minister isn't secretly giving information about you to them? Who can we trust? Glen Beck? Fox News? Dick Cheney?

                          Jeffrey in post #13 says

"Romney is the same book as Obama with a different cover. Their policies mirror each other.

In public they appear to be against each other but in private they are working on the New World Order.

In the NWO we the people will lose all of our rights of freedom as Citizens and become Subjects (SLAVES) in the New World Order."

                          Benji,

There are some things Mr Will and I can agree on and there are others I cannot. You are right he is no liberal.

One thing I can agree with though is as you pointed the republican favorite, is "Not Romney" Unfortunately for the zealots, is is also "Not Santorum"

Since Gingrich has shot his wad already, that leaves only one.

But unfortunately for the media he is the "one who's name never gets a mention" What's the media going to do? stop covering the campaign because of the edict that they can't mention the name of the only candidate that makes a lick of sense?

The one who's name isn't mentioned does have some admirable qualities, he's blunt, speaks his mind, you know where he stands, and has other strengths too. He can connect with people unlike the corporate suit who seems to be wired by the GOP power brokers. But what's the point of mentioning someone who's unelectable?

Of course, Santorum is unelectable too, but it's different with him because that fact hasn't sunk in widely enough yet. Besides, when he comes off all judgmental and holier than thou, and that's just good ratings for the networks. George Will said it though, that Saint Santorum isn't electable; we're looking for a president, not a pope. So did "The Donald" LOL

So, I don't think that they'll ever start ignoring him like your guy? He's too entertaining. Give the public circus.

Seriously though, Egilman, it's obvious that Romney is wired when two states declare him the winner without counting all the votes, and then have to walk it back when people start complaining about rigged elections.

I wonder who's behind the curtain pulling the strings? Could it be Karl Rove? It's got to take a lot of dough to grease the palms of the vote riggers, and we know Rove is the Koch bros. money man, because Bush doesn't need a brain anymore. Well that's just pure speculation, but he does have the requisite lack of ethics. So who knows? And it probably takes a whole crew of ethically-challenged loyalists to pull all the right strings, and grease all the outstretched palms.

So why doesn't your guy complain? Make some noise? He's no fool, he must hear rumors of the funny business. These guys are not too subtle, stumbling all over the place with their unbelievable press releases about losing ballots, thinking other ballots were spam - hah, that was dumb! etc. Surprised they didn't claim the dog ate it.

C'mon, people! Can't you see that Jeff is just having some fun with you all? Look directly at the sun with "some good sunglasses on"? Jeff knows it and presumably everyone else knows it as well. He's trying to talk people (in a non-serious manner) into blinding themselves. But then you never know. Somebody might actually do it! Whew (wipe brow).

                                  Well, check THIS out.

In the word BuyBull, there are 7 letters. Just like the 7 deadly sins. 7 times 7 is 49. Subtract the 29 days in February from that, you're left with (yes, you guessed it!) 20!!

SO THEN -- If you remove the 20 from the current year 2012, you're left with 12. Subtract 7 (from the deadly sins) from 12 and you're left with 5 -- which is the number of letters in the word bible!

Which means: bible TRULY equals BuyBull

Good thing for you, Jeff, that numerology is completely true, and you saw it HERE. Now you can WAKE UP.

Oh, Sailcat, don't dissuade Jeffrey from speaking his mind; people like him provide a valuable confirmation of the utter emptiness of GOP?TP talking points and the extremeness of their policies for people on the left, the center, and even the center-right. If anyone wants proof of just how far out on the fringe the GOP has gotten, google conservative columnist George Will's recent, devastating criticisms of this season's contenders for the GOP nomination. For example - Will accurately observes that the GOP contender with the best chance of winning the nomination has the last name "Romney" and the first name "not." And that's not an endorsement of Santorum either, but I'll let the readers who google Will's columns find out that for themselves (I prefer to save some surprises).

It needs to be clearly understood that neither Romney nor Santorum can win a general election against Barack Obama in November. There isn't a poll out that that says they can and the economy is slowly improving. That is the fault of the GOP.... who couldn't get a candidate what would appeal to independent voters to run and then made a hard right turn. You can't win elections from the left or right and the GOP has gone so far right with their candidates they have no change in November.

I have not been thrilled with Obama, but anytime I hear he is "distroying America" or "must be impeached" or "has made the economy worse" (he hasn't look at the numbers) I hear EXACTLY what the person wants to say, but can't "Please do anything to get that African American man who should have never become President from being re-elected". I know.... it's hard to say what you really feel... but the lies being told about Obama get so outlandish at times there is no other way to explain them but racism.

Richard, the thing is, President Obama isn't doing what he does to be 'popular,' which reflects on why some Democrats don't like some of the proposals he tries to get across for the benefit of ALL Americans. The GOP's orders are set in stone, and their voter base will follow them to hell in spite of themselves. These Republican candidates can't even say anything 'good' about President Bush I or II, always going back in time to Reagan (who had major missteps of his own). They are always complaining about President Obama and keep changing the bullseye on his back; 1st it was his birth (which is STILL being brought up), then his education, then the economy, then it was jobs, then it was Equal Rights, then it was Women's Rights, now it's the gas. He showed his certificate, was asked by Harvard several times to come back to be a professor and was in the Harvard Law Review (which would be kinda difficult to do if he didn't have good grades), The Economy IS coming back albeit slowly (which is kinda hard to do in 3 years after 8 years going down the toilet and a Congress working against him), 23 straight months of job growth (after President Bush's 700,000 job loses a month in his last term in office), LGBT rights (which is dictated by the 14th Amendment), Women's Rights (which many States have been in the process of taking away at a rapid pace in the last 3 years), Gas prices rising (because of Iran's shortening oil production in part). What many people don't know is that America has been producing more oil in the last 2 years than ever in the history of oil production, but are selling the oil to other countries because of one reason; profit. America is also USING less oil than ever. The Keystone Pipeline will NOT be producing oil for America; it is all for sale to other countries. The promise of thousands of jobs is just that, a promise. Now the GOP are using the 'Church' to hide behind, since they have nothing else. The only problem with that; the GOP AND the Church have lost the original meaning of Jesus's messages, and have in turn become BUSINESSES.

You can run but you can not hide. The truth will always shine through the lies and darkness.

Wake up to the truth for a change that you can believe in.

I know it is easier for you to believe the lies than face the truth.

The truth shall set you free.

Obama, Shariah Law and the lies will keep you on a ball and chain.

I also am not thrilled with Obama, but he is still a better choice than anyone the GOP could offer. Obama at least doesn't try to force his values on us, or tell us how to live our private lives. The GOP has shifted so far to the conservative side that women should be frightened, along with anyone who is black, latino, gay, lesbian, or just wants the government to stay out of their lives. While Obama is trying to end a couple of pointless wars, the GOP candidates are talking about starting new wars. Who benefits? The defense contractors. Who loses? The families of the American servicemen and servicewomen who lose their lives. Oh, wait! Under Santorum, women wouldn't be able to serve in the military, because they are a distraction and not worthy of our respect.

Pennsylvania dumped Santorum as a Senator and we don't want him in the White House. Think about it, when it comes time for Pa. to vote in the primary, what will he try to say to a state that didn't want him. I would suggest you consider voting for somone else. Besides that he is just plain goofy.

Competence, liability, honesty and empathy are the traits I want from a president. Does he connect with me or not is irrelevant. Can he make the country better? Not a diverse one like ours.

I have dear friends whom I totally connect and yet, I won't EVER do business with them...

Santorum is great for the extreme far right faction of the country. For the rest, he is a fraud.

Romney has no vision for the US. At least he hasn't expressed one that I'm aware of. Romney's vision is of himself as POTUS, He wants to be POTUS because he wants to be POTUS.

Uh Billy, do you think about what you write? Hint: 'empathy' means being able to connect with others, and Romney can't do it. More importantly is the reason he can't - it's because he doesn't have a clue about what it means to be working-class, wage-earner for your family and fired from your job by faceless executive in an expensive suit who only sees the money he's going to make by dissolving the company you work for. Romney empathizes with banks, corporations and wealthy fat cats like himself. Expecting him to understand what it's like to lose one's job, or one's home, or one's health insurtance is like asking a cat to empathize with the mouse he's eying for a snack.
