President Barack Obama is to visit a state-of-the-art fire station in a Washington suburb on Friday.
The president will speak about the economy at Fire Station No. 5 in Arlington, Va. in the late morning.
He's expected to propose a new conservation program that would put veterans to work rebuilding trails, roads and levees on public lands. He's also expected to announce the administration will seek additional grant money for programs that allow local communities to hire more police officers and firefighters.
The Arlington County Fire Department says Station No. 5 is the first in the region to feature individual accommodations to better serve the increasing number of female firefighters. It's also a "green building," with many energy-saving features.
In the afternoon, Obama will attend a campaign event in Washington.

And the good jobs numbers today should go well with that message.
I am sure the doom and gloom parrots will be out with their delusional rationalizations in full force. It will be fun to watch them spin in desperate circles.
You libs have been asking "where are the jobs" since we elected Republicans to take back control of the house of Representatives. Now whenever we see growth in job numbers you claim it is because of the dems policies? That is SPINNING in desperate circles my friend. You are right, it is fun to watch.
if things continue to improve will this be Obama's economy... yet?
lol
The problem is, JH, when you say "no" to everything, and do nothing, you get credit for nothing.
Matt
Who is saying "no" to everything besides Harry? What party refuses to write a budget? I'll give you a hint, dems. That is why they get all the credit for our economy. Just ask Debbie Schlutz, "this is Obama's economy".
Matt

Don't quite know what happened here. Sorry for the double post.
JH- the problem is the Dems "where are the jobs" rhetoric is accurate since, in 2010 the repubs ran on "we'll fix this jobs mess" and due to frustration voters gave the pubs back the house. Problem is, they've not attempted or passed a single jobs bill since. That's where the "where are the jobs" complaint comes from. They used the "jobs" argument to get elected and quickly went ahead with their actual agenda. It seems it might be in their favor for the jobs mess to stay bad so they can get elected again...thus their absolute refusal to do anything....even things they said they would do until the president said it was a good idea.
In the mean time repub pres candidates (and people like you) make the claim that Obama has lost all these jobs.....when the total opposite is true. Since he's been in office the job loss stopped and jobs keep getting added not lost. Pretty stark contrast....even someone who knows nothing about politics could look at the chart were the the numbers go up right after Obama got elected and see something must be working that didn't work before.
Truth Patrol
Do you remember what the dems ran on in 2006? They kept telling us to elect them and they would fix everything that Bush was screwing up. How has that worked out for you? Anytime I hear people say that the GOP doesn't want the economy to improve because it will help their reelection chances, I cringe at the stupidity in that statement. I do actually feel that President Obama has been so focused on his progressive agenda that he really doesn't care about the average American. What else would explain his sudden focus on jobs? He has been saying for the past three years that he is focused on jobs but his actions haven't looked that way. Now that it is getting close to election time his focus has shifted to where it should have been. He says plenty of good things but I am thinking he lies too often for political gain.
Where did the funds to construct this new fire-station come from.??
We need tax producing jobs, not jobs produced from taxes..
If this politician continues to grow this government, all subjects will be required to kiss his ring when he enters the room.. I wouldn't mind, if he didn't keep it in his back pocket..!
Some things just aren't adding up:
Two days ago a report was released that layoffs were up 19% in January(from December) and up 39% from a year ago.
Two days ago a report was released that said that private sector companies created about 147,000 jobs and noted that we'd need double that to make a dent in unemployment.
"Official" unemployment (federally reported unempoyment) is down- both weekly and annually. Yes, I do understand that this is seasonally adjusted and doesn't show people falling off unemployment benefits, etc.
So, how can it be that we have many reports conflicting each other? Are each biased towards one side or the other? How can we be sure that things are getting better when we hear more and more layoff reports from major companies (let alone the unreported smaller companies)?
You can't continue to repeat "This is the worse President in History"
Then run off the House of Representatives record, that pasted two laws over 14 months, which on record is the worse congress in history. And say "Look what the repukes did" We all know what they did, they blocked 4 trillion dollars in sending cuts, block the Jobs Act, Blocked every proposal President Obama presented to them and you somehow think the Repukes made it better? Then claim President Obama is bad for the economy and he doesn't know how to create a job because he has not been in business. BS all the way around your butt to the tip of your penis. You can't wipe your azz fast enough because the mud is all over you face.
JoeNY....
figures lie and liars figure....the statement is not political as it is aimed at BOTH sides
Fascinating watching Teapubs wallow in their rantings while trying to deflect GOOD NEWS. And BTW for all Teapubs and folks unaware of what liberals have done for this country here's a reminder:
A Liberal Republican President freed the slaves
OBAMA IN 2012
70+ SEATS FOR DEMS IN THE SENATE
CONTROL OF THE HOUSE
Oh almost forgot...Popcorn?
What Im taking from these comments by the Right is that if the news is good, its either liberal spin or all because of the Repubs taking over the House, but when its bad news its All Obama or has nothing to do with the Repubs taking over the House. So now tell me who is it is truly spinning the story to fit their narrative?
OBAMA2012
JH-479998
Ahhh... the reverse logic double flip! Now THAT's fun to watch!
What we "libs" have been complaining about is that NOTHING coming from the right wing Congress is aimed at jobs... NOTHING! A little religion, a little abortion, a little hypocrisy, and a little extortion... but no jobs legislation.
So when we forget to give you credit for a job not done, please forgive us... maybe we'll see the error of our ways someday.
Trying to have it both ways you repukes wont work in the information age of technology.
President Obama 2012
All I have to say is thank goodness the Tea Party stopped Obama's Stimulus 2...remember that? According to our fearless leaders, without it being passed, unemployment would go back over 10% and there would be an increase in rapes and murders....
This is what you libs don't understand, sometimes the "do nothing" option is truly the best. Sometimes a No vote is good. Now, if Dirty Harry would allow a Balanced Budget Amendment vote that was passed by the House, watch the job market take off when companies know they can invest in people rather than pay many more taxes.
Stimulus 1 = 9+% unemployment
No Stimulus 2 = 8.3% and falling unemployment...
Now, if we stop the spending, our kids might just have a chance....
JoeNY the unemployment numbers don't show all the unemployed. If someone quits looking they come off the list, if they take a temp job they come off the list so as you say the numbers don't add up.
Joe,
The numbers don't add up because they are qualitatively different, and refer to different levels of the job market.
The unemployment rate numbers exclude discouraged workers. As more and more people fall off the unemployment insurance rolls due to expired benefits at 99 weeks or sunset of UI extensions, they aren't counted anymore (considered as outside the economy), which causes the unemployment rate to artificially fall. Presumably when those discouraged workers see the rate is going down, they will try and jump back, which will likely mean the rate will go up again (hopefully less than it dropped, so it will be a net gain over time).
There is also the issue of the type of jobs. High paying jobs are being lost, and the jobs being created are either low paying or temporary jobs, or amalgamated positions (ie, several jobs blended together, combining the work of 4 or 5 people, to get around hiring freezes) that don't pay much better.
JH.
The GOP has done NOTHING to help this economy. The 112th congress is more of a do nothing congress then the original
Conversely, the 111th congress was the most legislatively productive congress in recent history. In addition, the independent economic analysis shows that the policies from the Democrats and Obama helped the economy.
It is funny to watch all the delusional parrots try and spin this one. You nuts are all over the map. Some are attemting to claim some conspiracy with the BLS, while others, like you, are trying to give the GOP credit.
LOL!!! Drop the delusion.
Paul
LOL!!! Anything to preserve that delusion you were fed, huh?
The problem with your stupid rationalization is the independent economic analysis clearly shows the stimulus helped the economy.
And there was a stimulus two, passed in the lame duck period after the 2010 elections.
Study up.
Ah Repulicants-
So you are telling me that Obama's Jobs Act was still passed? Don't think so. I was trying to keep it simple for knuckleheads like you. Obama is on record for stating that if the Jobs Act wasn't passed last year, the unemployment would go over 10%. He was on record for stating that if by passing Stimilus 1 the unemployment would not go above 8%. You remember that? Also, Obama was a US Senator (voting present of course except for TARP and against anything relative to the troop surge in Iraq that worked) in 2007 and 08 when the Democratic congress increased spending by about 25% so the entire "we didn't know how bad it is" further emphasizes is incomptenence as much as the results of his actions.
BTW, those same "sources" that claim the Stimulus helped in the short term, and I can give you examples of where the cost to do projects with Stimulus money was more then it would be w/o due to union requirements, state that it will do more harm in the long run then if nothing was done at all.
Keep drinking the Kool-Aid. Lord knows I'll be supporting your tail too at some point...
There it is again. "this is Obama's economy!" It's a battle cry of the right wingers. They've been hammering that into everyone's heads since they gained power. Now they have to figure out how to spin it all the other way. So funny that so many right wingers here join in. How stupid and ridiculous you all sound. Your spinning numbers and faulty calculations only prove you really are idiots.
Whine now about the job numbers being "inaccurate" and the pay scale of the jobs created. I would like you to show some actual facts backed up by sources other than FAUX NEWS. Also, it's quite amusing to read your hilarious "explanations" for why the economy only "appears to be getting better". You are all so transparent. You need to learn to look forward to what your President has planned for us next. He's been doing a fantastic job in spite of all the interference he must fend off and deal with each and every day from the right.
I can't tell you how happy I am that all of President Obama's hard work and effort, and all those chances he took, sticking his neck out fo average middle class people like us, knowing full well what would be coming from the right, have reaped us such rewards. And him. Just remember that. Obama knew the economic mess he was stepping into when he took office. He knew what was coming but he held his ground and made the decisions and moves needed anyway. He also knew he would be attacked for it. And the right wing has been vicious and ruthless in that. It's going to be kind of fun to watch them now. It is interesting the way they spin every good thing Obama does and try to make something bad of anything good.
Wow, over THREE years in office and Mr. Obama continues to "TALK" about the economy.
Maybe he had better break out another "laser beam".
Yep, HERE IT IS AGAIN:
Mr. Obama did assume responsibility for ALL Domestic and International affairs as of 21 January 2009. Wait a minute....it took him nearly two years to say the "Economy" was his.
No battle cry here.....JUST FACT.
FACT. Obama has been working hard at trying to fix the problems. And he's accomplished a whole lot in spite of the Republicans.
Now just read your own comment. You see the spin? YOU are the one spinning it.
Obama took office in the middle of a catastrophic economic collapse, two wars, employment's downward spiral and much more. He never complained. He rolled up his sleeves and dived right it. Whenever anyone has reminded you people of what he was dealing with through no fault of his own it was to defend him and for good reason. You want us to believe that Obama and the Democrats have been crying about the mess Bush left. NOT GONNA HAPPEN. We were there when this all began so we know the facts, my friend. We are merely keeping the record straight. No whine here.
Paul.
No. I am telling you that the stimulus helped the economy. In doing so, it helped set the stage for the economy to recover. Of course, other policies like the auto bailout helped as well.
What didn't help is the GOP obstruction.
LOL!!! Only in your delusional little world.
This is a great example of how your spoon fed delusional reality prevents you from thinking for yourself. That projection was made before Obama took office, and before we knew how bad the economy was (retracting at 9% instead of 3%).
It is also a great example of your inability to think logically, since the unemployment rate was over 8% BEFORE the stimulus passed.
An example of your ignorance....and need to deflect.
The Democratic congress did not increase spending 25%. The effects of the recession decreased federal revenue and increased manditory outlays. Study up.
No one knew how bad it was. Those projections were made before it was clear. More from your spoon fed delusion.
I am sure you can provide a truck load of crap the right wing hacks have fed you.
However, right wing crap does not trump the independent analysis. Sorry jr....but post it. I look forward to mocking you further.
John Makin of the conservative think tank, the American Enterprise Institute:
The real economy also responded to the massive stimulus but remained heavily dependent on it. In the United States, growth during the second half of 2009 probably averaged about 3 percent. Absent temporary fiscal stimulus and inventory rebuilding, which taken together added about 4 percentage points to U.S. growth, the economy would have contracted at about a 1 percent annual rate during the second half of 2009.
http://www.aei.org/outlook/100928
Or Mark Zandi, advisor to the McCain campaign:
The Great Recession has finally come to an end, in large part because of unprecedented policy efforts by the Federal Reserve and fiscal policymakers. The cost to taxpayers has been substantial but would have been even greater if aggressive action was not taken and the financial crisis and recession had been allowed to continue unchecked.
http://www.economy.com/mark-zandi/documents/JEC-Fiscal-Stimulus-102909.pdf
Or the CBO about the third quarter of 2009:
On that basis, CBO estimates that in the third quarter of calendar year 2009, an additional 600,000 to 1.6 million people were employed in the United States, and real (inflation-adjusted) gross domestic product (GDP) was 1.2 percent to 3.2 percent higher, than would have been the case in the absence of ARRA (see Table 1). Those ranges are intended to reflect the uncertainty of such estimates and to encompass most economists’ views on the effects of fiscal stimulus.
http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/106xx/doc10682/Frontmatter.2.2.shtml
Or what the CBO said about the forth quarter of 2009:
In sum, CBO estimates that in the fourth quarter of calendar year 2009, ARRA’s policies:
-- Raised real GDP by between 1.5 percent and 3.5 percent,
-- Lowered the unemployment rate by between 0.5 percentage points and 1.1 percentage points,
-- Increased the number of people employed by between 1.0 million and 2.1 million, and
-- Increased the number of full-time-equivalent jobs by 1.4 million to 3.0 million compared with what those amounts would have been otherwise (see Table 1).
The effects of ARRA on output and employment are expected to increase further in calendar year 2010 but then diminish in 2011 and fade away by the end of 2012 (see Table 3).
http://www.cbo.gov/doc.cfm?index=11044
On that basis, CBO estimates that in the first quarter of calendar year 2010, ARRA’s policies:
--Raised the level of real (inflation-adjusted) gross domestic product (GDP) by between 1.7 percent and 4.2 percent,
--Lowered the unemployment rate by between 0.7 percentage points and 1.5 percentage points,
--Increased the number of people employed by between 1.2 million and 2.8 million, and
--Increased the number of full-time-equivalent jobs by 1.8 million to 4.1 million compared with what those amounts would have been otherwise (see Table 1). (Increases in FTE jobs include shifts from part-time to full-time work or overtime and are thus generally larger than increases in the number of employed workers.)
http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/115xx/doc11525/05-25-ARRA.pdf
Let's see Mr. Reuplicants-
First, while I don't have time to go link Obama's and Biden's speeches regarding Stimulus 1 and about unemployement wouldn't go above 8% and Recovery Summer and the like. Most of us free thinking folks actually remember him saying it. On NBC News no less.
You ever hear of ROI my friend? At what point is spending our kids money OK? Just asking the question. If you want to reseach it, go to usgovermnetrevenue.com and it will show how the Bush Tax Cuts resulted in revenues to the governemnt going from about $1.8 trillion in 2001 to $2.5 trillion in 2006/07 with the largest deficit being $414 billion and unemployment averaging 5%. Once 2008 rolled around and the first Democratic "budget" (and yes, Obama was there) the deficits started skyrocketing and yes, spending increased from $4.9 trillion in 2007 (the last Republican budget) to $5.3 trillion in 2008 (that is nearly a 10% increase) to $6.0 trillion in 2011 (about a 20 to 25% increase from the last Republican budget). Source is www.usgovernmentspending.com.
So, I'll ask again, what have we gotten for about $17,000 per person in deficit spending since the Dems got control in the past 4 years?
See, I didn't have to make slanderous statements...BTW, I don't have time but I worked on a Wastewater treatement plant bid that was $13.1 million wiith $3.5 million of stimulus money with all the union and prevailing wage requirements and only $8.2 million when bidded without those requirements. So, again, governemnt stays out of the way, most things are less expensive....
Paul.
LOL!!! I am not denying the projection was made. However, you are denying your poor logic abilities. Unemployment was above 8% before the stimulus was passed.
I was actually questioning your delusional statements about the Jobs Bill and 10%.
You are also ignorant as to what makes up the debt and yearly deficits. The vast majority of the debt since 2009 is from the recession in the form of lost federal revenue and increased manditory outlays, as well as leftover policies from the last administration. The CBO puts out a report every year that outlines what makes up the deficit.
Try turning off the cable news and looking.
----------
I also noticed you failed to support the delusional crap you posted about the stimulus:
LOL!!! I don't wonder why....
Hint: it has nothing to do with time...it has more to do with the fact you bought into a bunch of crap you were fed, but just isn't true. Your anecdotal experience is pretty lame, btw.
Study up. Drop the delusion.
Paul.
Economic recovery. See the analysis.
Got any that makes the point you were fed?
LOL!!!
Ahhh, republicanism! Thy name art fraud. Thy vessel be'th cracked. Thy substance be'th wee, even as the wind of a gaseous ass caught in the whrlwinds of thy paths. Thy cup of spin and twist, thou took'eth from thy master betray'eth thee, and cause'eth thee and thine house to become'eth a place of much mirth, by the enlightened brethren who look'eth upon thee with much ridicule. Republicans need to get 'em a new bucket. They've beat this one to death.
Great post, Ron in Seattle.
Remember the first word in Conservative is CON!
Obama knows nothing of the economy and jobs.... He has ignored them since his election. Now he will claim success but it will never occur to the liberal press to ask "what did you do to enable this?".
The one thing he has done the last few months is hide from doing anything. The lack of success on any of his policies for 6 months has turned the economy, yet the pompous Obama will claim he did it all...
Oh and Paul, don't you conservatives remember that speech Reagan made in the 80s promising that his tax cuts would raise revenues and keep the budget balanced??? And how did that work out for us????
After three long years and 15 TRILLION in DEBT, Hussein o celebrates with an unemployment rate nearly DOUBLE that of Bush, instead of hanging his head in SHAME. Say Good-Bye "little o."
You are delusional.
The unemployment rate is a result of the resession that was well under way when Obama took office. In the first six months of Obama's term, we lost over 3 million jobs.
Study up.
Alan, why are you rooting against the economy?
Also, the unemployment rate when George W. Bush left office was 8%, and rising.
Two years prior to Obama coming to office we lost millions of jobs. All the result of Democrat control of Congress. Who's delusional?
We need to get the Republicans back in control and get jobs going like they were before 2007. You guys can spin all you want but facts are facts. And the fact is that Congress controls the country. As Congress goes, so goes the country. Congress was controlled by Republicans in the last years of Clinton and you all talk about the surplus when he left office. Then you credit Clinton? Unemployment was low when Republicans controlled Congress until 2007 and when everything went to hell after Democrats took over and you blame Republicans? SPIN, SPIN.
Alan, the unemployment rate (left from the previous 8-year president) has been on a non-stop decline since the moment Obama was sworn in. Please do some research and look at some graphs.
JH-479998
You guys won't give up will you? No jobs, Obama's fault! Jobs..all due to the efforts of the Teapublicans. Never mind that they haven't done one f---ing thing about those jobs, jobs, jobs that they gained those seats last Nov. by promising to have a laser focus on. It would be laughable if it wasn't so pathetic. OBAMA 2012! This despite everything those bastards have done to make him a "one-term President"
I personally am rooting for a robust U.S. economy ! In order to sustain such an economy, I am going to vote for the GOP. The Republicans are the only ones who truly understand the capitalist system.
If Obama is re-elected the unemployment numbers will go back up rather quickly. All Presidents that seek a second term tweak the economy to give it appearence of stability during an election year, just like Obama is doing now. If Obama gets a second term in office, the Dems. will not be able to sustain the magic show. The Reps. at least understand capitalism and have a chance to keep the ball rolling.
Truth Patrol
The truth is the jobs picture changed in late 2007 and really tanked in 2008. Yes, Obama was not in office but his party was running the show in Congress.
Oldlady
Why don't you ask Harry to bring some of the GOP bills up for a vote in thje Senate. It may just help the job situation in this country.
They also ran on getting rid of Obamacare. They haven't been able to do that yet but it will get done when the shellacking is complete this year.
Americans understand Capitalism, they have a real problem understand Vulture Capitalism! If Americans let one more flipping Teapublicans anywhere near elected office this November, we will all regret it. Just like all those people who elected those Republican governors last November....real cases of buyer's remorse BIG TIME! The polling shows that the majority of Americans trust Obama and the Democrats when it comes to governing....sorry, guys!
On the new jobs initiative the President is going to speak about today, three things:
1. Those are federally created jobs, not private sector jobs. Therefore we (taxpayers) have to pay for their sallaries and benefits.
2. As the federal government is already overspending by $1.1+ trillion, where do we expect the additional billions to come from??
3. When you create federal jobs from taxdollars, is it really a "job created" when it takes many people's tax dollars to fund one job and the income tax from that job won't increase the tax coffers?
@JoeNY,
So you are advocating we create no government jobs? Would that included the President, congress, FBI, CIA & the hold Arm Services. I mean what the hell are you saying? It don't add up nor does it make since.
This government is running on borrowed money. Soon the investors will refuse to buy our debt at any price.
Growing the government will only contribute to the national debt..!
Solutions- Yes, under the circumstances (1. Our federal government not having an established and approved budget, 2. The federal government currently outspending it's taxation by $1.1+T, 3. The financing of our current debt is more than our country's GDP, and 4. Our lenders are moving out of using the dollar for their international commerce (oil, etc.), reducing their holding our debt, and limiting their current debt purchases to short terms) I do not think the federal government is capable of creating and managing additional employees effectively. They clearly have no concept of fiscal restraint or management, so just printing more money to create more federal jobs is a very bad idea. Ultimately you and I will be paying for the national debt (through loss of value of the dollar, higher cost for food, oil, goods, etc.) and our standard of living will suffer. I can't endorse yet another federal spending program.
I'm guessing you are old enough to have had a wild night out and woke up the next day with a massive hangover and no money. Put that at a national scale and we'll have a lot of people complaining that their gas is now $6 a gallon, their grocery bill doubled, they can't find a job that will support their "needs", etc. and everyone will be pointing fingers at each other and saying "it's your fault". I'd say now is a pretty good time to start reducing our spending flame and save a bit of fuel for when we might need it.
Growing government is like putting a cancer on steroids .... feeding on its host until it chokes out the life of its victim. Government jobs FEED off taxes, while private sector jobs PRODUCE taxes.
By the way, I understand Obama has decided he is God. Yep, the Reverend Obama now has said Jesus supports raising taxes. Funny thing, however, if he is going to start attempting to quote the bible, he better be prepared for it to come back and bite him in the posterior !!
Politicts: [ Poly "many" + tics "blood-sucking parasites" ]
JoeNY - you are delusional. These are private sector jobs - not government jobs. And, they are good jobs - not temporary or low level. You right wingers do love to lie don't cha?
Hey lawdog-
If the GOP know more about capitalism, how come it has been THEIR policies of deregulation, unnecessary tax breaks, and cuts to education and social services that brought us into this mess??? And if they really wanted to help the American economy, why the hell are they going small with puny deregulation bills that could HURT our nation when 2 million jobs and a better infrastructure is staring them right in the face??? Why didn't they let the Jobs Act go to a REAL vote, not a filibuster, and allow it to pass??? If you're all about jobs jobs jobs, why go small when you can go big??? And it would be PAID FOR!!!
The GOP's policies of trickle-down economics DO NOT WORK. Why would giving the rich tax breaks help all of us??? The rich aren't the job creators: sure they create innovative techniques and products, but those things are useless unless the REAL job creators (the middle class) have the money to buy them!!! Why can't the GOP actually COMPROMISE like the Democrats in order to help America instead of being stubborn and saying "We're right, you're wrong, and it's our way or the highway??" Face it; the GOP know SQUAT about the economy, and their policies will RUIN this nation.
OBAMA BIDEN 2012
Hey Freshiee,
If you want to see what brought us into this mess, go take a look at the Clinton administration's putting pressure on the mortgage industry and government lenders so that every American could afford the American Dream ( a house / home). This basically allowed anyone, whether they were qualified or not to buy a house. The failure of the ones , who should never have qualified in the first place, to pay their mortgages led to the basic collapse of the housing market. Where the housing market goes, so shall the country.
I agree deregulation wasn't one of the better ideas. I do agree with the tax breaks. It is the wealthy people, who own the businesses and companies that put Americans to work. They may not be your pick of the litter in a popularity contest , but I can live with that. Obama has already proved that he is not capable of implementing a successful jobs stimulas. The cost of rate per job in his last effort was $278,000, Joe Taxpayer says, "No thanks Mr Obama!
Compromise? When have the Dems wanted to compromise lately? The Dems are so lame they couldn't even get anything done when the had a majorityn in both the Senate and the House of Reps.
I am willing to face the facts - The DemocRATS are full of BS and are striving to BANKRUPT this nation !!!
Seeking- Here's a note from the article: "He's expected to propose a new conservation program that would put veterans to work rebuilding trails, roads and levees on public lands." That's a federal program, using federal tax dollars to hire veterans to work on public lands. I don't see that as private sector jobs, it's still our money and our debt.
Hey, a few stimulus programs ago I would have bought into using tax dollars to work on infrustructure, however the federal government decided that they'd rather direct certain companies and industries rather than let them fail. They decided it was better to pay off their friends, decide who's a winner and a looser, and let our money be used to get their job done. We lost out, only a few people/companies won. So we are a few trillion more in debt and have very little to show of it.
i'm glad were seeing an uptick here but it won't help the grand Socialist.
he's done too much damage and everyone knows if we do improve... he's done nothing to be a part of it
How did he do damage? By lowering unemployment that was increase before he was sworn in? By saving a major US manufacturing industry (and thousands of jobs)? By ending the money pit wars that the previous president committed us to? By systematically killing various terrorist leaders, at a much higher rate that the previous president including OBL himself?
Please describe this alleged damage.
Dam True Patrol,
You are ripping alexinPA a black hole in his butt. We wont see the end until billions of years from now.
This day is going to be fun.
President Obama 2012
Didnt know Obama was on Seal Team6 and killed OBL. Dont you Socialist pigs ever forget that its the troops that do the dirty work in the desert only to have an ungrateful country and power hungry politicians to steal their thunder.
Feisty from the looks of it, we need your post on the psychological profile of conservatives. What happened to traditional Republicans who could win a debate based on the substance of their idea, NOT IDEOLOGY.
From Feisty's post yeaterday:
At long last, a study has confirmed what I have suspected for years. Conservatism is hereditary!
OBAMA IN 2012
70+ SEATS IN THE SENATE FOR DEMS
CONTROL OF THE HOUSE
Popcorn Teapubs?
RON: I love it. This one's a keeper!!! LOL funny.
OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
Ron, you are nuts....watch any "man on the street" interview and it's clear your typical conservative voter is more intelligent than the typical liberal. There isn't a Republican voter that doesn't know who the VP is. I'd bet you $10,000 (yes, a frielndly play on Mitt), that I could go out and ask 10 people who said they voted for Obama who was his VP and 4 wouldn't know.
But you may be right, Psychology Today is truly an unbiased periodical...no libs in that group for sure....
how many teleprompters are we guessing he'll use today?
get ready for the great one to pat himself on the back for doing nothing.
he loves to take credit when he's done nothing
So, if he's done nothing that how can he take any blame either? Just curious, who did something if he didn't? Pubs can't have it both ways....they can't say the stimulous didn't work, they also say Obama didn't do anything to take credit. They have to pick one argument or the other....problem is both look bad for them.
Funny how Gingrich the other night talked about his prompter not working during his concession speech in FL and he rambled on in a stream of consciousness....Oops, I guess other people use prompters too.
I hope he uses that very same teleprompter when he addresses the nation as the newly elected PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES next January. OBAMA 2012! You guys have read the polls where the majority, yes, the majority of Americans trust him and the Democrats to run the country....I know I have!
I saw on the news this morning a couple of Swiss Banks are in trouble for hiding Billions of Wealthy Americans money and not reporting it... it made me wonder if this is why our debt is in such dire state... America has always been funded by the Government making a certain amount of money and putting it out there... expecting it to keep us stable and moving. When the wealthy removed that money (God only knows how much more is just harvested out of the country)... our Government is forced over and over again to keep printing... because the wealthy are constantly removing it and not redistributing it. Wow, how do you solve this problem? Republicans believe its their money to keep with no tax and the middle class and Obama are wanting it put back into society as is has been for centuries... sad how greed will destroy the strongest country in the world.
Dam True Patrol,
You are ripping alexinPA a black hole in his butt. We wont see the end until billions of years from now.
This day is going to be fun.
President Obama 2012
I agree Iowa, its amazing how people want what they didnt earn for doing next to nothing other than being an American. I make $50,000 a year as a middle class American and its enough for me to pay my bills and SAVE. The "I want it now" crowd only understands SPEND SPEND SPEND and when they have no money left, they look to those who have earned their way (or lucked their way) into a good life and want to take it because they cant have it.
not another fkin program.
less government not more spending.
stop spending money.
Good to see positive results after giving back control of the House to Republicans in 2010.
lol
yes it is.
Can you name three laws they pass to help Job Growth?
It would be easier if good ole Harry Reid wouldnt keep those bills in his desk drawer and actually present them.
So if Reid has all the republican bills in his desk drawer, how are the House republicans stimulating job growth?
The GOP has done NOTHING relative to job growth. They are focused on social issues - women's rights; religion; etc. They said they would block everything Obama tried to do to fix the economy and they have done that - but - he is succeeding anyway. And, so is the country!
It would be easier if Republicans passed the paid-for Jobs Act that would create 2 million jobs instead of filibustering it.
More mindless dribble from the dribble master......The "O" must GO!!
Yes, I agree. And by O I think you mean the GOP, Eric Can'tor, John Boner, Traitor Norquist, and the rest of the Grand Old Party. It shall be a great day in America when the GOP is dead and buried and America can actually start moving forward!!!!
'Jobless Rate Drops to 8.3%...'
Hold your nose and swallow. Every week thousands of unemployed American workers no longer meet the criteria to be counted in the 'Jobless Rate', although they are still unemployed. The formula creates the illusion of job creation and that all is well...intentional falsehoods supported by corrupt government.
Many thousands of workers are continuing to be fired or layed off every month. The true unemployment rate, not government 'fuzzy feeling' press releases, is closer to 23% and rising (ShadowStats). Most Americans are fast becoming aware just how blatently government lies.
It might be a Democrat, Republican, or a Red Chinese Communist that occupies the Oval Office,,,the Elite really don't care as long as the corrupt status quo, the Washington Establishment continues to legislate and formulate policies that are subject to their financial influence. And they depend on the active participation and complicity of millions of Citizens,,,are you one of them?
The Obama "spin" machine is in full cycle.......And MSNBC is there to spread the propaganda right on cue...The spin machine is cooking the numbers just like drug suppliers cook meth.....
Hmm hey guess, You're republican buddies on here are saying that this change in umemployment is due to the Repubs taking back the House. So if that's true then is it still MSNBC spin? I need to understand this. Are the good numbers due to the repubs or is this a lie by the dems to make the economy seem to be doing better? because its a MSNBC spin then none of you can claim the Repubs have done their job since elected. and If it isn't MSNBC spin then you have to acknowledge the fact that maybe just maybe the "liberal media bias" you guys tout so often is pretty much BS
DOMINGO: Your post is absurd. Since when is your statement "news"??? The unemployment statistics NEVER take into account those who have given up looking. The same rules apply to unemployment regardless of what party is in the White House? Do you mean to imply that during the Bush years his unemployment figures reflected things more accurately, took into account EVERYONE in the country? Ridiculous and you should know better.
Unemployment numbers always show an artificially low number but that fact is no different now than it was under Bush or any other administration for that matter. Good news is good news, no matter how you spin it. I do realize how disappointing this must be for you and the rest of the haters on this vine. My advice, better be prepared for more disappointments in the upcoming weeks and months. LOL
Ok so what programs or polices the Repukes have to combat this so call 23% jobless shadow rate?
I know cut Social Security, cut The Health Care Act, cut Medicare, make every state a right to work state, cut food stamp programs to the poor children, cut the capital gains tax to 0%, cut the corporate tax to 0%. And Wham! we have full employment for everyone. NOT stupid azz. Is that the best plan you got?
Not a single reasonable and rationale person believes your trickle down theories anymore. nor have the every worked.
Everybody was expecting for the unemployment to rise. But sooo many places unemployment has dropped below 8%. In Hawaii, unemployment is below 7%. I tell you obama is a financial genius. Turning the economy around after the economic catastrophe of 2007.
Obama, a financial genius !
LOL !!!!!!!!!!
I saw on the news this morning a couple of Swiss Banks are in trouble for hiding Billions of Wealthy Americans money and not reporting it... it made me wonder if this is why our debt is in such dire state... Hey Iowa, how much does PMSNBC pay you to cut and paste? Because I would LOVE that job.
You couldn't handle that job raff. You don't have opposable thumbs.
Obams/Biden 2012!
snk - GOOD ONE! I do think it's way above Raff's intelligence level!
sounds like everyone drank the Kool-aid
All you have is hate for people that dont think Obama is the savior of our great nation.
The rest of us are here in reality. Wake up, DemocRATs!
so much for failed stimulus and policies..................not!
agree... and the failed presidency
ALEXIN: Hurt much??? I feel your pain. LOL
ALEXIN: Hurt much??? I feel your pain. LOL
ALEXIN: Hurt much??? I feel your pain. LOL
Wow! I have never read so many ridiculous statements with complete disregard of the facts. The repubs on the campaign trail constantly tell us that this economy is bad and it's Obama's economy. Now that it's clearly been getting better since he took office, they say he deserves no credit. THIS HOUSE OF REPS HAVE DONE NOTHING SINCE 2010.
When the job hiring picked up in December, the far right cried "it's only seasonal". January's numbers are even better, they can't deny the economy is picking up steam, so now they are trying to take credit. It won't work on the American people. You will have the biggest joke of a candidate in Romney. Flip-flopping, spineless, out-of-touch elitist. What until the general election, he will be painted as the wealthy guy who's looking out for the rich. You really think the Middle Class will get behind someone who has off-shore and Swiss banks accounts?
Oh my word. I've never heard so much anguish, so much gnashing of teeth, the cries of pain coming from the Right. What awful news, THE ECONOMY JUST MIGHT BE GETTING BETTER!!! Oh the unbearable pain, the heartache, the uspeakable agony, the shear misery of it all.
I've never seen more people who claim to be such great patriots, who feel that they and they alone are the standard bearers for patriotism in this country more disappointed that perhaps, just perhaps we are beginning to dig ourselves out of the pit created by the 8 years of disasterous policies handed off to our President by the previous administration. What could possibly be worse than our nation recovering? It would mean that all their cherished, "supply side", "trickle down" theories would be once and for all conclusively proven to be the hoax that so many of us already know them to be. What excuse will they puke up for giving yet more and bigger tax breaks to the uber rich???
So my fellow Conservatives, my Far Right Loons, let us all pray. I know how deeply religious you are, so therefore let us all pray for this recovery to be shortlived and die stillborn. Let us pray for the failure of our president so we shall not be proven to be nothing but petty, hateful, small minded zealots that you so clearly are. Let us pray that more of our fellow citizens become unemployed, let us pray that more families will lose their homes to forclosure, let us pray that more small businesses fail. In short, let us pray for the complete and utter failure and ruin of our president for if he succeeds than we Reich Wing Nutcases shall lose and die an unpeakable, ignominious death. Dear God, please answer our anguished cries. AMEN.
Mitt Romney's new theme song:
Gloom, Despair and agony on me.
Deep dark depression excessive misery
If it were'nt for bad luck I'd have no luck at all
Gloom, Despair and agony on me!
I find it extremely hilarious that the Right on this board, after years of suggesting that the economy is bad, and it was all Obamas fault, are now trying to take credit for the improvement. Especially when they have said "NO" to everything Obama has tried to do. But, despite their obstructionism, Obama has been able to get some things through, and look how the economy has improved. I wonder how much better we'd be if the Right hadn't been such big obstructionists. For the Right to now try and take credit is simply delusional, revisionist history, and just down right lies. But, that's their mantra..Tell the lies over and over and over until the uninformed believe it to be true.
Not according to the polls. Even if jobs don't grow at the HUGH, HUGH pace they have this time, most Americans trust Obama and the Democrats to run the country in their best interests! Come t think of it..even if just ONE job had been created, it would still have been more than the jobs, jobs, jobs Boehner promised last November, no? Those bastards have done EVERYTHING they could to bring him down and people are seeing through it.
Poor rightwing loons. The economy keeps getting better under President Obama, and they have absolutely no response to it. Except to say the President has nothing to do with it. OK, so then he had absolutely nothing to do with the recession, right? At what point do you idiots take off the hate blinders? 22 straight months of job growth. Unemployment rate going down. All the polls showing the public is more confident in this President and the economy. I could go on and on. All the while, your soon-to-be nominee keeps sticking his foot in his mouth and has Trump endorsing him. What a joke. Obama/Biden 2012!!!!!
I found it odd so many jobs added in January. Indeed the economy is improving, for I heard yesterday that a company who makes fire arms is hiring 1000 new temps. Oddly the positions pay $3.00 an hour less through the temp service then for a regular hired employee and they do not get the benefits.
I am not sure if the new results is accurate though. The Labor board just made changes and revisions in their calculations that has changed all the calculations of those hired each month in 2011. Every figure is in the plus for job growth showing more jobs added then originally reported. Look for yourselves.
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm
As an Independent I do not find this a plus for either Obama, or the Republicans for I have to now question what are the actual numbers for job growth compared to what is the political spin in an election year.
The average job now supposedly pays 4 cents more an hour is not a plus. Food, Gasoline and everything else has been costing us more, it the temp service pays $3.00 an hour less then the job originally paid how is 4 cents more an hour a plus to reviving the economy?
There are jobs being added. I wish the labor department had of left the calculations alone so I would be able to have confidence in the growth.
Today's headlines are horrible news ~ if you are a Repubican. More jobs are being created, total unemployment is down, the GDP is growing faster than predicted, consumer confidence is significantly higher, one war has ended and the second is on the clock, and (using the Bush yardstick) Obama has kept us safe from terrorist attacks. Now a recently conducted survey finds that almost 60% of those polled think we have turned the corner on economic recovery. Soon there will be a GOP summit to explore ways Republicans can claim credit for all the good news. By late summer, unemployment will most likely be under 8% and Obama's favorable rating will be over 50%. Yep ~ dark days for GOPers who have already selected their counterclaim ~ gas prices ~ which are determined by commodity speculators, not the White House. But they will try to sell that issue. Its about all they have left in their arsenal. Things are improving and despite the GOP's best efforts, they can't stop the progress.
Poor Jim, he must be the only Dimocrat left in Texas.
When unemployment was approaching 5.9%, then House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi cried that President George W. Bush’s “failed” policies are responsible for the current state of America’s economy. The unemployment rate is currently 8.5 percent.
And it was 7.8% when Bush handed the keys over to Obama ~ yet it was only 4.7% when he got the keys from Clinton. What happened? And when Bush turned over the keys to AF-1 we were experiencing a negative GDP. Within three quarters, it was positive again and the last quarter sampled it was 2.8%. I know you are trying to make a point here, Smithy ~ but it isn't working for you very well.
What can Obama say about the economy? Oh by the way, I'm tanking it with the debt crises I've created.
Of course it going to be getting better, for if he told the truth, he wouldn't stand a chance to get reelect.
It was claimed by the Labor Dept. that 243,000 jobs were created in January.
Okay lets say that those 243,000 jobs still exist today. What does that really mean when the post office has announced its postponed laying off 128,000 worker until May.
American Air has announced its laying off 15,000
Boeing and a host of other manufactures have announced they are going to be laying off workers this year.
Sears/Kmart is closing stores and laying off. A number of national retailers like Best Buys and Rite Aid are in financial difficulty. Does that mean more store closings and layoff? It appears that way.
Are the above indicaters that employment growth is happening or that we are in recovery? Only to a man who is trying to get reelect.
Terrible argument! The "It was claimed by the Labor Department" statement is laughable! This is the same department that used the same calculations for job growth in the Bush administration and administrations before that. You can't cry foul if you don't support the President but the job numbers show an improving economy.
A little lesson in capitalism. Some companies hire and others lay people off. The measure of economic growth is calculated by taking into account all businesses in the country, not just the handful of companies you cited that announced layoffs. If more companies hire than lay people off then the economy is growing. You Rightwingers are just showing that you have no use for facts, just more doom and gloom.
A little quick math in response to your question. If job creation remains at some 240-thousand per month through May, that will total 960-thousand. Lumping the USPS and AMR layoffs together (143-K) that still leaves a positive growth of 817,000 jobs, excluding January 2012. As for Sears/K-Mart, I doubt there will be much impact. I've shopped their stores recently and from general appearances, no one works there as it is. I couldn't find an employee to assist me in finding what I was shopping for. Maybe that's why they are in such financial duress ~ lack of customer service.
GCHD
Thank you for pointing out that the Labor Department caters to the President that pays their salaries.
You know what they say, figures don't lie, but liars figure. And we know from three years of Obama's administration that information coming from them isn't exactly accurate; more like manipulated to show favorable results. Oh just like you said the Bush administration did.
From you response, I can see you are well aware of this practice, so its hard for me to belive that you are so naive to believe that the information coming out of the Obama administration is any more accurate than the information that came out of the Bush Administration.
For example, when Obama was trying to sell the Affordable Health Care Act to the American people, Obama's administration said that it would pay for itself. But now we've come to learn that its going to bankrupt this country if it isn't repealed.
The few examples I used are only the tip of the ice berg as didn't want to fill of page after page of companies thatare in finanical trouble who are or could be laying off.
The question you have to ask yourself is how long to you plan on living in a fantasy world were the Democrats are the good guy and the Republicans are the bad guy when in reality they are both the bad guys who practice Party service, Self service before Public service.
Jim in Texas
Apparently you are uniformed, so your math doesn't add up. I only used a few example that one could say represent at the tip of the ice berg.
No ~ the math calculates quite accurately. The "tip of the iceberg" is pure conjecture. If we are traveling a factual path then we have a basis for comparisons. If we are wandering in a realm of speculation, then I have no interest in traveling with you for you will ignore facts in favor of fantasy.
What Happened,
"Thank you for pointing out that the Labor Department caters to the President that pays their salaries."
I guess Bush stop paying their salaries in his 2nd administration. Why else would they put out job numbers showing the labor market hemorrhaging jobs and the economy tanking? Maybe it had something to do with the policies put in place by a failed Bush administration and a failed conservative approach to economics.
"For example, when Obama was trying to sell the Affordable Health Care Act to the American people, Obama's administration said that it would pay for itself."
Kind of like Cheney and Rumsfield saying the Iraq war would be a cake walk and their oil revenues would pay for the war. How much debt have the conservative misadventures abroad put on this country?
The problem with people like you is that you ignore facts and spread lies. Obama stopped the economic bleeding Bush had given him and his policies are now turning it around, yet you continue to either ignore facts or when they are provided, simply disregard them.
Have fun on that ice burg you've been drifting on.
I have to admit I don't quite know what to make of the conflicting reports we get on an almost daily basis. That being said, I hope this is accurate and that jobs are coming back. I would hope for all the people around the country who are searching for employment that this is true. I don't care much why, I just hope we are seeing some turning of the corner. Not a republican or democrat, and have no clue which way I will go in the fall. I lost my job in September, was receiving unemployment for 16 weeks and then decided I would be of more value to society being transport, as needed, for my grandson to and from school so that his dad could work full time, on a rotating shift. But for everyone else, I hope this is accurate and we don't have a re-working of the numbers next week.
Annie
We would all like to see the jobs coming back for the middle class working as they are the real wealth of this country, but its a campaign fantasy to say that they are.
With 46% of all American living in or at the edge of poverty and growing,
With reports that Banks and insurances companies are looking into sending their customer service and computer operations overseas,
With investors telling new manufacturers to produce their products overseas,
With all the announcements of pending and actual layoffs across the spectrum of employers,
With Obama wanting to bring in Chinese manufacturing and Chinese workers to run those manufacturing plants it doesn't look like the jobs we need to support our economy and government are going to happen.
We are slowly being turned into a 3rd world nation and it doesn't look like we have any kind of leadership to prevent it. Not a candidate for President nor a member of Congress. And not one American with any kind of leadership ability has come forward yet to do what is needed to right this country.
Party service, Self Service before Public service is the creed all our elected leaders follow and we are seeing the results with 46% of our popluation living in or at the edge of poverty.
what happened - possibly the stupidest post I've read in a long time. "Obama wanting to bring in Chinese manufacturing and Chinese workers to run those jobs".... What a totally absurd and delusional post. Clearly the drugs have gotten to your brain - if there ever was one!
I keep hearing that things are getting better, but I just don't see it! I look around and see food and gasoline prices steadily climbing, I see houses continuing to undergo foreclosure, I see as many or more people without jobs (and the few jobs that are available pay very low wages), I see banks continuing to NOT make small business loans, I see interest rates on savings at essentially 0.00%, I see my mutual funds continuing to lose money, I haven't seen a cost-of-living raise in over four years and foresee none again this year either, I see my health insurance rates dramatically increasing, I see my retirement savings and plans seriously threatened, I'm having to work harder and harder - but getting nowhere! From my perspective, things are NOT improving.
So where are these bright spots - those improvements in the economy that the media and politicians keep talking about? Could it be they're lying to us? Would the media and politicians to that? You betcha!
Disappointed, I would say our retirement savings are holding their own, and in fact, have grown somewhat over the past year. Not huge growth like we saw "before", but sufficient to have covered our draws so that we are basically living on the interest. You might want to look at your portfolio and see where your investments are placed (if you can do that). Maybe you just need to rearrange some funds. Just a thought ......
An impressive list of accomplishments for President Obama!

At least you didn't include that ignorant statement I saw a few days ago, that the President had someone's social security number who died in Connecticut in the 1890's. Especially since the first SSN wasn't issued until mid-November, 1936 (or 1935?).
Annie........ "just the FACTS ma'am".
If you can refute anything on this list, please be my guest.
Preview of Obama's speech - "Look at the employment numbers, buddies. Thanks for listening. GOP - please say "No" to this question - Will Giants or Patriots win Superbowl this weekend"
SSMITH
Did you know there was a study done by Farleigh Dickinson University that (and I quote) "watching certain news sources--especially Fox News-- can actually mke you less informed about what's going on in the world?"
Something tells me you're a regular viewer.
Dee........ "just the FACTS ma'am".
If you can refute anything on this list, please be my guest.
ssmithlg, I wasn't commenting one way or the other on your collection of thoughts, other than to give you credit for eliminating the one ignorant statement I had seen.
I'm not a republican or a democrat. I give credit where credit is due and I think both parties tend to be pretty self-serving and not much interested in "we the people." When it takes a program like 60 Minutes putting their inside trading into the light of day, before they fix something they should have known was unethical, although not patently illegal, I know exactly where they stand.
BTW Dee, Eric Holder is now threatened with being in "contempt of Congress", I haven't see THAT story here on MSDNC.
Watching Main Stream & Left Wing news sources---- can actually make you less informed about what's going on in the world?"
Something tells me you're a regular viewer.
Sorry Annie, I didn't mean to offend.
Jackie - since 125K adult first time entries into the job market appear every month it cuts last month's jobs created by 50% automatical. So we are +120K last month.
At that rate, we'll catch up to the true 14M unemployed in 10 years - yeah!
When Reagan's recovery began in late '83 the jobs number that signaled it was +630K and the GDP in '84 came in at 7.6%. Obama's best number? 1.7% GDP in 2011. Whose approach affected more in a positive way?
Keynesian economic theory is a joke and a failure yet Obama clings to it like a loser.
A man who can get all of this done in three years ~ while playing 90 rounds of golf ~ is a man worth keeping. As you list confirms, he is doing something. In answer to your question, YES ~ I do feel better now. You forgot to include one item that is a constant burr under the saddle of many who are Obama-phobes. He is also the first president to be Black. To some folks, that is his greatest deficit. If you doubt that, come visit my state and I'll take you around to places where the "nig*er president and his 'uppity' wife" are discussed with regularity ~ quite often by professing Christians.
Jim - your reference to race is bogus and not the issue. The issue is economic results. Your finger-pointing to vapor rednecks is intellectually stagnant and applies to a very, very small number.
No problem - just clarifying my point of view.
Ssmith - your last two entries remind of Nixon's approach to the presidency viz. the Imperial Presidency.
And we all know how that liar turned out.
Race is certainly an issue in this election. The facts show that people of color are worse off now than before Obama became president.
I wouldn't say that its because Obama is estimated to have a worth of $10 million or that Obama pretends to be white some of the time and black other times, I would say its because he has no concept of what it is to be a person who has to struggle from day to day to put food on the table for his family.
ssmithlg
You forgot some.
He's the first President to publicly state that the Constitution has out lived its usefulness.
He's the first President to signed two Bills into law that deny American Citizens on American soil their Constitutional protection of due process.
First person to go on and on and on without saying anything worth a damn! When we get a chance to kick to flipping Teapublicans out this November maybe then we finally see some hope and we'll see change for sure!
You obviously don't live in Texas, else you would not be so dismissive as to conclude it is a "very, very small number." For many here, it is the only issue and it would equally apply if the president were a black Republican. The intellectually perceptive can discern the racial bias, particularly when it is openly and rabidly articulated.
ssmithlg - it would be the entire post that is a blatant lie! But you knew that when you posted it.
Rebel, Reagan didn't have to deal with (A) a crippling depression (all he faced was a smaller recession) and (B) a huge debt. He also didn't have to deal with an uncompromising Congress. And besides, Reagan rode high by SPENDING. That is what Obama did. Technically, after a recession growth is slow for a few years. Check the slow recovery of the US economy after the Great Depression. Plus Reagan boosted defense spending, which created manufacturing jobs. Obama doesn't have the option of a more targeted stimulus, as the GOP won't allow it nor will our fiscal health be able to sustain it. And Reagan may have helped the economy in the short term, but he screwed us in the long run with his huge deficits and his deregulation and trickle-down economics which have stunted growth and increased income inequality.
Freshieee - stop listening to your liberal profs and start reading more. Then get back to me.
Spending? The Dem-controlled Congress Reagan had to work with did that you knucklehead. And he went along with so long as they wouldn't dismantle his Cold War strategy with defense spending. He even raised excise taxes to keep it in place - with a tact understnading that Dems in COngress would but spening by $1 for every three new dollars into Treasury. Instead, the Dems spent $3 for every $1 new dollar coming in. That is fact.
He didn't come into office with a depression? Neither did Obama you dum-dum. Unemployment during the Depression ran as high as 25%. Reagan came into office with 18% interest rates for loans, 8% unemployment and 14% inflation. OBama came into office with a banking crisis that precipitated the jobs crash which Bush fixed with his $800B in TARP loans to prop up the financial markets. Most all of which has been repaid.
You are very uninformed.
Now here comes Obama's version of FDR's WPA - that will benefit a few but not the many - and create more debt which is already massive while concentrating on public sector jobs as Obama seems to be doing according to this article.
Which reminds me of what Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau, Jr. said of FDR's stimulus programs at a political science conference in 1938:
The Great Depression and its rampant unemployment were of primary focus for Morgenthau. And after almost two terms served by Roosevelt, Morgenthau, assessed the federal effort to relieve economic conditions by proclaiming, “We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. . . . After eight years of this administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started . . . and an enormous debt to boot!”[5] Indeed, the unemployment rate for 1939 was higher than the unemployment rate for 1931, but lower than 1932
When unemployment was approaching 5.9%, then House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi cried that President George W. Bush’s “failed” policies are responsible for the current state of America’s economy. The unemployment rate is currently 8.5 percent.
I am not sure if any of us know what the actual unemployment rate is. The Labor Board just re adjusted all the numbers going by the 2010 census.
All the original unemployment numbers for 2011 have been adjusted and now read different in the plus for job growth for every month, So this would drop the unemloyment rate by their adjustment. Howver we would need to go back a few years with this new adjustment calculation to get the big picture of actual job growth.

reality
Of course unemployment figures hold some importance, but I think the real killer number or statistic is that 46% of our population now live in or at the edge of poverty as that includes people who are working.
Well, if we elected a Republican they would cut spending for safety nets, driving more into poverty. And their cut cut cut policies would pollute our air, dirty our water, decrease the standard of living in the United States, and leave us bankrupted, forcing us to default and eventually split up into 50 small nations fighting and arguing with one another.
The drop in unemployment is due to the record number, 1.2 million people, who have dropped out of the laobr force. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/record-12-million-people-fall-out-labor-force-one-month-labor-force-participation-rate-tumbles-
This is why MessNBC isn't allowing comments on their pollyanna BS little story about the drop in the rate.
By the time the election rolls around, Obama will be saying we're at zero unemployment when all thinking Americans know this is yet another lie.
Why should someone who has no job and is NOT looking for one be counted in the unemployment number? It is there choice to not work and not actively look for work. I would think this would appeal to you, aren't you all about individual freedom. How far would you go? Do we count children as unemployed because they are citizens but do not have a job and are not looking for one?
GCHD..... keep drinking the Obama kool aide "Oh Compassionate One".
Liberalism IS a mental illness, GCHD's twisted logic proves it.
ssmithlg is mentally ill prepared to deal with any kind of facts.
Yes there has always been people who no longer looks for work and not counted as unemployed.
Does that mean bush had an unemployment rate of 20% ? That answer should be yes if you are indicating President Obama has a rate of 23%.
What do you want to happen - do you want the unemployment rate to go up? or do you want the unemployment rate to go down.
Me personally i want America to be fully employed no matter who is in charge. Seem to me you want America to be unemployed because a repuke is not in office. WOW!
Do you really think everything would be better if a repuke was in office, I mean look what happen the last time - economic disaster - the greatest recession since the great depression. I don't want them anywhere near public office.
GCHD
The unemployment figures put out only represent the number of people applying or filing for unemployment benefits.
Its nowhere even close to the real number of people who are unemployed because the Labor Dept. assumes that those people who stopped applying or filing have found jobs.
You have to take it for the gain of salt that it is and look at other data to get the real picture. Like how many additional claims were made for welfare in the same time period. The figure that is most disturbing is that 46% of our population is living in or at the edge of poverty and growing by leap and bounds.
People who work but live in poverty is not a sign of economic recovery, just the opposite.
what happened wrote, "The unemployment figures put out only represent the number of people applying or filing for unemployment benefits. Its nowhere even close to the real number of people who are unemployed because the Labor Dept. assumes that those people who stopped applying or filing have found jobs."
Well, what happened, tell us how you know this and everyone else is for some reason completely oblivious to this "fact". Even the U.S. government Labor Department. So you want us to believe that it's all being made up to make the economy look better? NOT. Things actually are getting better.
Also, I've never seen so many right wingers complain that the new jobs created are "low wages" jobs! Really? All of a sudden it matters to you right wingers when others have to work for low wages? What happened to all that screaming and calling unemployed people lazy saying that they won't work because the pay isn't high enough for them? And saying they are just "sucking off of taxpayers" because they are spoiled union workers use to high wages? Hugh?
You really make me laugh!
conside-it
No, you are the only one who is oblivious to the fact I stated as its been the Labor Department who publicly says them may times.
Having been downsized 4 times due to corporate take overs and getting the thrill of a life time being working homeless for 7 months, I never screams about those people as I've have some experience at what those people are going through. And I can tell you first hand, its no fun.
The problem is that you people live in a fantasy world and ignore the realities of what is happening in this country. For Example; 46% of our population live in are at the edge of poverty and not only is that percentage increasing, it includes working people. If our recovery was as Obama claims that percentage would be going down not up.
Second; We are in an Obama created debt crises. Our government can't keep borrowing money. Every month Obama goes begging to Congress to raise the debt ceiling so he can pay the interest on the money he has already borrowed and operate his government. That can only last for so long before the falsehood it produces that everything is honky dory is destroyed.
With the number of companies that have already started to lay off people or have announced they are going to lay off people, it is foolish to assume that job growth is taking place just because Obama says it is.
And lastly; we've learned from the experience of the past three years that there is a huge gap between what Obama says and what Obama does. His actions speak volumes over his words. If you haven't learned or educated yourself to this fact, the shame is on you.
Politics aside, it is in everyone's best interest for economies to move forward. The reasons may differ but the results will be movement upward. Even greedy people see the value in a society that is employed.
As too the President, if he is to shoulder the blame for a failing economy he is equally allowed to be lifted as it improves.
Thank you.
You can't say Blame President Obama because the economy is bad.
When the economy looks good you can't say someone else improved it.
A bunch of idiots if you think in those terms.
But that only holds true if there is real economic and job growth; not the manipulation of a man running for office that's trying to con people into voting for him.
As of today, the only evidents that Obama has grown anything thing in this Country from an economic point is the evidence that he's grown the National debt to the point he's created a debt crises.
That's the one thing we know for sure that Obama has accomplished.
What Happened,
I've watched your comments and your coherence (very bad spelling) deteriorate throughout the day. Get some rest man. You've got a full day of spouting non-sense all over again tomorrow.
