Obama emboldened by Republican primary race

President Barack Obama speaks about the housing market and the overall economy at the James Lee Community Center in Falls Church, Virginia, February 1, 2012.

President Barack Obama has long relished a dragged-out Republican primary contest that would leave the eventual Republican nominee battered before the fall election.

He might be getting his wish, a prospect that is firing up Democrats, galvanizing their ranks and boosting fundraising pitches and requests for volunteers.

"They've awakened some sleeping giants," said Ira Leesfield, a longtime Democratic fundraiser. He said he watched the negative Republican ads and said "it put me into high gear."

As the Republican voting shifts to contests in the Midwest and West, front-runner Mitt Romney's chief rival, Newt Gingrich, is attacking him at every turn and pledging to stay in the race well into the spring. And Romney is paying a price for it: The former Massachusetts governor's negative perceptions among voters have climbed in recent weeks, a trend that could hurt him in a general election matchup with Obama as the general election approaches in November.

"The Florida primary will be a turning point in this race — the other side is looking at what could be months of brutal, negative tactics that turn people off to politics altogether," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in a fundraising pitch to supporters.

The Obama campaign's most recent fundraising report showed it had more than $80 million in the bank, a healthy sum for the coming year.

Democrats — and Obama specifically — are no stranger to drawn-out fights. Hillary Rodham Clinton didn't drop out of the previous presidential race in 2008 until June of that year.

Obama's team is trying to take advantage of the extra time in this election year, using the next several weeks to focus on his best political asset: being president. As Republicans grind toward having a nominee, Obama is filling his time with a post-State of the Union agenda underscoring the themes of his re-election bid. That means pushing ideas with mainstream appeal, like helping struggling families refinance their homes or pay for the kids' college education.

It also means not directly engaging Romney for now because to do so would make Obama look more like a presidential candidate than the man running the country. But that has not stopped Obama from making not-so-subtle digs at Romney this week for his views on the auto industry bailout and home foreclosures.

Democrats still have plenty of bad news on their side. The nation's unemployment rate has consistently topped 8 percent during Obama's presidency. A Gallup survey showed Obama's approval ratings dropping in North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida, all critical to his re-election. In New Hampshire, which Obama carried in 2008, he had an approval rating of about 38 percent.

But Romney's negative ratings have climbed in recent weeks. Polling by NBC News and The Wall Street Journal showed that 36 percent had a negative feeling toward Romney, compared with 31 percent having positive feelings. A separate poll by ABC News and The Washington Post found 49 percent had a negative impression of Romney, a jump of nearly 20 points since September.

Democrats point to a growing storyline about Romney's work as a top executive for Bain Capital, a private equity firm, and soft support among ardent conservatives.

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter noted in a memo Wednesday that a recent Pew Research poll found nearly 3 in 5 Republican primary voters wanted another candidate to enter the race.

"You've got a lot of Republicans who are disenchanted with the 'supposed' nominee in Mitt Romney," said Morgan Jackson, a Democratic strategist.

Romney, addressing supporters in Florida after his big win there Tuesday, dismissed suggestions that a lengthy primary fight would hurt his party's chances in the fall.

"A competitive primary does not divide us, it prepares us, and we will win," he said.

But Gingrich gave no indication of bowing out anytime soon. His campaign even distributed signs at his Florida primary night rally that declared, "46 States to Go."

Who wouldn't be emboldened? These guys are tripping all over themselves. It's a circus with some Clowns dressed in Drag.

Ramney is being attacked for his 'very poor' remark because he is a very poor candidate that needs to stay outside Washington.

A competitive primary will damage the Republican Candidates and divide the Divisive Party. They make it sound like a Democratic Contest... not even close.

Whackadoodles, all of youse!

I just don't see anything positive that President Obama can run on. When the republican primaries are over and the facts start hitting the airwaves say good-bye Mr. President. He is in for one tough re-election bid. I can't wait until it's over and he goes back to Chicago.

How soon the left forgets their own primaries 4 years ago.

I have a contrary view to this article...I think the drawn out race helps the Republican nominee - just like it helped Obama in 2008. The negative items are going to come out anyway - now they are coming out many months before the general election, and the candidates are learning how to deal with them (both responding to specific allegations, and how to respond to negativity in general).

The Obamas a socialist Crowd are probably are not educated enough to realize Socialism is much closer to capitalism then is Fascism. In a Nutshell we are better described as an Oligarchy with a Socialist Component, in fact, we are far from Pure Capitalism and neither Party offers that. Maybe Ron Paul, otherwise all the name callers need to look in the mirror and turn off Fox News.

Ron, President Obama and Sec Clinton weren't tearing each other apart because they knew they would need each other and we knew it as well. On the other hand, this is not something that benefits the eventual winner... Ramney is damaging himself and the Establishment do not know what to do with him nor Gingrich.

With all these Super Pacs throwing red meat at the wall they only damage the party. I'm also certain that when the primaries are finished, there will be some questioning about how, who and why certain Super Pacs by Ramney supporters were likely illegal.

That's the long and short of it.

I would like to talk about the economic data released this week- BUT MSNBC doesn't have any comment tabs on either the "Obama keeps his job" or the "less unemployment" articles.

Essentially, the MSNBC article noted that the lower unemployment number this week indicated a strength in the economy. Yesterday there was an article that noted that private sector jobs increased by about 147,000 and that we "need double that" to show any growth. Then there was another report that layoffs are up 17% this month (from December) and up 39% as compared to last year. So, more companies are laying off people and less jobs are being created by companies.

I don't care how the government cares to release the numbers, or MSNBC caring to spin them (without comment lines), but if you take the various reports they DO show that the economy is in a very bad state. Just try to keep track of the facts and reports from many sources and don't rely on the summaries you are being fed by one source.

Once the Republican candidate is decided upon, the cash will flow to support him ... whoever that may be. All the candidates are united in recognizing Obama's failed leadership as he tries to grow government at every opportunity. Government has a COST ... and too much government control is why our country is now over $15.1 trillion ..... and growing ... every minute !

The push towards a utopian society is what the "progressives" envision. The reality, however, is wasteful government, burdensome regulatory government is now choking our economy which must now compete on a global basis.

It's hard to vote for the Dems as a Democrat from Charlotte, NC because the Police harass minorities in CHARLOTTE, NC!!!!

This city's daily arrest rate targets 85% minorities and the majority of these minorities are jailed for not having a license as well as for marijuana possession.
Charlotte's population contains a majority of Caucasians yet the police only target African Americans!!!!!

why does this occur while we have a Democrat as Governor and an African American mayor who should understand that more blacks have loss their jobs than anyone therefor e when they get a ticket they are more than likely unable to pay resulting in loss of license and the continued harassment by police????

I went to the same school as our mayor and yet I have not hit the social networks there yet because I'm waiting on the Convention and will prepare to get my flock riled u against this type of abuse and will hold those responsible for the continued targeting of minorities who are not actually criminals from being arrested.

I will also target the budget for the police force if this unfairness continue to occur.

How will I target them??
Through informing the public in that area of the Draconian style that this government uses to hold blacks down still even after slavery has been abolished.

When it's time to vote for a budget we will focus on the leaders and pressure them to stop by voting those in or out of office.

On Feb 1, 2013 out of 121 arrest only about 25 were Caucasian and this happens daily.
The Caucasians arrested are usually the very poor.

AND THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION IS TO BE HELD HERE!!!!

LouisJ,

I have a different recollection of the 2008 Democratic primary race...remember the "3:00 AM phone call" quote? (and there were plenty of other similar comments by both camps)

With all of the money in politics today, the "bad stuff" on all major candidates is likely to come out. As a candidate I would rather have it come out in January through March, than in October or November.

I also think, although the Republican candidates have personal disagreements, there is a very strong desire to do whatever is necessary to beat Obama in the general election. So, I suspect every leader on the Republican side will whole-heartedly (sp?) support their nominee.

By the way, I'm not endorsing anyone...I'm just giving my opinion on how I think this will play out.

Alex,

You obviously haven't a clue vis a vis socialism nor succesful economies. I suspect fom your definition you are cranking out somewhere around a 100 IQ and a distinct lack of education. Every nation on earth entail aspects of socialism and there has never in fact been a successful entirely market driven government they all eventually fail without massive government intervention due to economic chaos or despotism. Pure market capitalism results in a very small group of welthy individuals who rule through economic self interest. I guess Jefferson was a Socialist when he Purchased theLouisiana Territory and gave away the land to anyone citizen or non citizen who would improve it. Maybe Madison when he began construction of the National Highway or Lincoln when he established Land Grant Colleges or The Transcontinental Railroad. Maybe Cleveland and the Oklahoma Land Rush or Tedy Roosevelt and the Panama Canal, FDR and the New Deal, Trumans Square Deal, or every subsequent president. Your Socialism gave us our transportation systems since the nation began along with all other infrastructure. It also has led to developmentt of airplanes and airports for the mails, all communication systems, he electrification of the nation, nuclear energy, the internet, satellite technology, computer hardware development, cellular technology and hundreds of other systems. Your socialism would include public education and transportation along with social security medicaire, FEMA, the police and FBI all social services the granting of oil and mineral rights.

My suggestion would be that you actually read a history or economic history book before you form your opinions and spew your venomous crap.

The republican candidates have caused more damage to each other, then the democrats could possibly hope to do. The republican party needs to limit the amount of debates in any future presidential campaigns. Most of these debates weren't about the issues, but character assassination of each other. Romney's and Gingrich's super-PAC's, have done more harm to the GOP, then Obama's could have ever done.

Republicans need to stop arguing amongst themselves and concentrate their efforts on making the US economy "fail" again......unemployment dropping again.....where are McConnell and Boehner, the promoters of "failure"?????

"Increasing employment is certainly a positive in front of non-farm payrolls and further supports the view that the U.S. economy is creating more jobs with the prospect for a lower unemployment rate. Perhaps we can break below 8 percent by year end," BNY Mellon senior currency strategist Michael Woolfolk told Reuters.

The broader trend in weekly unemployment benefit applications has been encouraging. They have been on a steady decline since last fall and plummeted three weeks ago to 352,000, nearly a four-year low. The four-week average, which smooths week-to-week fluctuations, has fallen to 377,500.

When applications fall consistently below 375,000, it usually signals that hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

Layoffs are down and hiring has improved. In December, employers added 200,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent — the lowest level in nearly three years.

The government reports Friday on January job growth and unemployment. Economists predict the economy added 155,000 net jobs, and the unemployment rate stayed unchanged.

STOPPED BEING PLAYED LIKE a STRADIVARIUS VIOLIN!!!

This how the game works. CAUSE: Teapubs get into office and legislate their ideological agenda which for the most part has been very successful in creating the biggest income inequality gap in US history, dumbs down America in very way and prime the nation for war.

EFFECT: The country goes to hell in a handbasket, TeaPubs are voted out of power, Dems are returned to power with the added burden of repairing the damaged economy, and the dysfunctional relationships created by the previous admistration and perpetrated around the world .

This is ALL lost on the ignorant American electorate who is being played to believe that somehow all the damage casued by the previous administration; CAUSE, somehow now the EFFECT disappears and becomes the fault of the incoming admistration.

So the party out of power frequently and loudly blame the party in power for not being able to repair the EFFECT in a few months, and you the American people eat it up, not knowing that you are just a pawn in a game those in power perpetuate with each election cycle.

Get off the PINK bus!!! STOP BEING PLAYED, and for once stop perpetuating the talking points you don't understand.

All the Framers envisioned with respect to the checks and balances of government, was that there would be three separate branches, each with equal but separate powers. The notion that they were talking about more than one political party controlling them is not true, as evidenced by the construction of the government in the Constitution.

In other words, one party can control the White House (executive branch), have the majority in the House and Senate (legislative branch) and conceivably gain a majority in the U.S. Supreme Court (judicial branch), and the balance of power conceived by the Framers would still be satisfied. It's about one person not having absolute king-like power, not about more than one political party having a majority somewhere.

President Downgrade-I'm a Catholic, and I'm not that hard hit by Obama's contraceptive plan. To be exact, I'm split over it. I personally believe in contraception, the only problem about the plan is that Catholic institutions tend to oppose contraception and the plan is forcing it on them. I would offer a waiver for RELIGIOUS organizations to opt out If and only If their religious leaders decide to do so.

Oh and if we're talking about breaking the Constitution, maybe you should also be talking about how unconstitutional the Defense of Marriage Act and DADT were; and how some Republican presidents want to have a constitutional amendment DEFINING marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Tell me exactly in the Constitution were the government has the right to say what marriage is. And tell me what authority does the government have to tell people who they can or can't marry. Huh???

And at least progressives actually know how capitalism works (even though we are technically "socialists") and how to soften out its rough edges (and believe me, there is a lot). Freshee - it wasn't just the contraception.

The Pope and the Arch-Bishops sent letters to be read in all Catholic Churches to all members. I'm protestant and found out about it from the debates and conservative radio.

As part of the HCL they are requiring Catholic adoption agencies to promote abortion. They are up to forcing ALL religious based Hospitals (Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim - yes - MUSLIM) to offer not only contraception, but offer abortion in all cases.

They were giving the hard sell about beating up on your rich, abusing, employer and slipped this into the written regulations. This is just a small part of the Health Care Law.

You guys are beating the republicans up while they are fixin to choke America into submission to their elite policies.

What I find particularly odd about the republican angst in all this is , they whine and carry-on about paying for un-wed mothers, poor people with too many kids etc..... yet are all up in arms over an insurer providing contraception to those that may want it. How can such a policy not help curb those costs in the long-run? Just wondering

Sorry, genius, we already went down that road ! Obama rammed through his government-growing gargatuan takeover of 1/6 of our economy

I was initially baffled as to what "1/6 of our economy" he could be talking about. The auto industry that was "bailed out" by the government isn't anywhere near that big, Obama has been selling off the Government shares in GM and Chrysler, and besides, that bailout bill was signed by Bush before he left office. No other "Government takovers" that I'm aware of.

And then I realized he was talking about the health care industry and the "Affordable Care Act". Sorry, not a "government takover" at all, the hospitals, clinics, doctors, pharmacies and insurance companies will remain in private hands. It does change some health care regulations, but Government regulation is not a "takeover", and regulation has always been a major function of Government.

You can be opposed to "Obamacare" if you like, but at least try to be honest in your opposition.

Do you always take right-wing talking points as the gospel truth, DB?

Because everything you wrote was crap.

The new healthcare rule only apply to public hospitals and clinics that employ non-Catholics and offer services to the general public. Those are NOT religious institutions.

The rules only require that the health plans of these institutions cover birth control - there's NOTHING "requiring Catholic adoption agencies to promote abortion". (I'd think even you would have taken the time to look up something as stupid as that, DB.)

These hospitals and clinics ALL take federal funds. Should non-Catholics working at those institutions be forced to live by the rules of Catholicism? That's not on the employment application.

I also think, although the Republican candidates have personal disagreements, there is a very strong desire to do whatever is necessary to beat Obama in the general election. So, I suspect every leader on the Republican side will whole-heartedly (sp?) support their nominee.

I suppose it's natural for the party on the outside to do everything possible to defeat the incumbent. But starting on Day One of his presidency? What about giving a freely and fairly elected leader a chance to try it a different way? The Republican ideology failed this country and landed us in two costly wars and a deep recession. How soon some conveniently forget the history of the day before.

Our economy does not turn on a dime. It is going to take a long time to dig us out of the hole G.W. Bush put us in. Americans are so dependent on having all their desires gratified immediately that it's no wonder Obama is vilified for not performing miracles.

The Republican drive to take over the reins of government at any cost, with the aid of Rupert Murdoch's propaganda machine Fox News, has resulted in their going completely overboard to the point of making up ridiculous lies and using unethical campaign tactics.

That hurts the democratic process and it hurts all of us. The system is fundamentally flawed by the undue influence of lobbyists and wealthy individuals like the Koch brothers, who use and manipulate voters with swift-boating, race-baiting, and Orwellian language (Citizens United???)

As the saying goes, politics is a rat race. You may win, but you're still a rat.

    2) "No, no. I have been practicing...I bowled a 129. It's like -- it was like Special Olympics, or something."

    3) "One such translator was an American of Haitian descent, representative of the extraordinary work that our men and women in uniform do all around the world -- Navy Corpse-Man Christian Brossard."

    4) "The Middle East is obviously an issue that has plagued the region for centuries."

    5) "I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go."

    6) "The point I was making was not that my Grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn't. But she is a typical white person, who, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know, you know..."

    7) "We’re the country that built the Intercontinental Railroad..."

There are a lot more actually... And all from a Harvard 'scholar' no less!!! You liberals really crack me up. So hypocritical. Enjoy that popcorn!! LOL!!

Good point Ron. The economy appears to be on a better footing than it has been over the last 3 years. Time will reveal whether it is still an issue and if TeaPubs will need to pick a different platform on which to constrain this administration.

One thing I have observed with Obama's campaign advisors is they are not taking anything for granted and anticipate a long hard battle. While this may be true one can't help but to thank the Teapubs for supplying so much ammunition to use against them later this year.

      Ahh Navy,

taking something completely out of context and trying to apply it to the actual words out of someones mouth in an attempt rabble-rouse. Nice Navy, good job of promulgating the lies and tactics of the dem media machine. Nowhere did anyone say that is what they are hoping for and that is anyones wish. You just keep making up blatant lies though. At least we know you arent on the side of truth. Thanks for playing, now back to your assaulting cops and pooping in parks while living in a tent and complaining about the things you dont have in this life...

        #3.7 - Thu Feb 2, 2012 6:18 PM EST

Wrong on all counts as usual roanoke...totally in context. Tell me you wouldn't be disappointed if unemployment went to 4% by summer thus making another term for Obama far more likely. We know it won't because it would take a lot more time than that no matter what, but what if? The obstructionist GOP is the main force in preventing that from happening. You calling it lies doesn't make it so. As for me I don't want for anything at all. I worked hard all my life and am now enjoying the fruits of that in retirement and a nice nest egg and more than enough income, with my wife, on our wooded acreage in the comfortable home we built together. Sorry your life is so full of discontent but at least you have FirstRead blogs to vent your spleen. I'm sure you're changing lots of hearts and minds so you've got that going for you.

More lies, slants, and subjectivity from Navy, but that's to be expected,

Like I said, no one is hoping that unemployment doesnt go to 4%. Thats just a subjective accusation (a false one).

Obstructionist, eh? As in the Senate voting 98-0 last year to reject Obama's budget? Meaning every single Dem in the Senate voted against it? (but sure, blame the repubs, as usual) Or...obstructionist as in holding the country hostage with a government shutdown so we can raid the already raied SS fund, syphoning off one -third of the funds to SS at a time when baby boomers, the largest retiring age group in decades, is just now starting to hit SS??? Obstructionist as in having a supermajority the first few months? Obstructionist as in having complete control of Congress until 2010, controlling the House, the Senate, and Presidency until then? Obstructionist as in rejecting nearly 20 House-passed bills with bipartisan support once they got to Harry Reid and the Senate?? Obstructionist as in rejecting the Keystone Pipeline, which would have created jobs and reduced dependence on foreign oil? Obstructionist as in in using budget reconciliation tactics and shady backroom deals to pass a strictly partisan government takeover of healthcare? (which will be ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court). That's just a few I can think of off the top of my head. Undoubtedly there are many more examples. So much for Republican obstructionism, huh?

Congrats on your nest egg and retirement. Thankfully, I have decades and decades before such things will be on my horizon. It's good to be young, in the prime of one's life. Life is good.

Erm, Roanoke - have you seen the approval ratings of ANY of the GOP candidates in those same states?

None of them are even close to 50%:

          Romney http://polltracker.talkingpointsmemo.com/contest/us-favorability-romney

Roanoke your arguments get nowhere. Your party declared their #1 priority to be making sure Obama was a one term president. Jobs and economy were down the line someplace in the priority list. That says to me politics before the people. They followed up that vow by doing everything possible to undermine the presidents efforts no matter what he proposed and even embarrassed themselves with the debt ceiling fiasco and the 2 month tax break extension, their opposition of which could have no other purpose than obstruction to deny the president the appearance of some sort of success. You can put any spin you want but to this your own party makes a liar out of you. The president has my vote and his election looks pretty likely unless the GOP suddenly becomes believable which they show no signs of.

I like how you dont dispute one single obsructionist point I provided. Ahh, your silence is quite telling. You calling them lies does not make it so...keep trying to deflect though...

The repubs wanted him to be a one term president because of his massive government socialistic ideals and implementations. They did not want his government takeover agenda to succeed because at least half of us still love our country and the ideals it was founded on...not a cradle to grave society in which democrats want us all living off the government teat for the rest of our lives.

Debt ceiling fiasco? You mean where Obama and the dems threatened to shut down the government if they did not get the ceiling raise...thus making our debt EVEN MORE??? LOL!! Spin away Navy...spin away.

            RealAmerican,

ummm...next time dont quote from TPM (owned and operated by hardcore liberal activist John Marshall). LOL. Good try though! From Gallup, a few days ago, a much more credible, historical, and non-partisan polling group:

"Romney Ties Obama in Swing States

            by Frank Newport

PRINCETON, NJ -- Registered voters in 12 key swing states are almost evenly split between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney in their 2012 presidential election preferences, while giving a 14-percentage-point lead to Obama over Newt Gingrich. Swing-state voters also prefer Obama to Ron Paul and to Rick Santorum. Registered voters nationally express similar preferences, although Paul does slightly better at the national level than he does in the swing states. These "swing state" results are from the third USA Today/Gallup Swing States poll, based on Jan. 24-28 Gallup Daily tracking of registered voters in 12 states that will be among the most crucial to winning the 2012 presidential election. The states include Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The national results are based on Jan. 27-28 Gallup Daily tracking of registered voters. Obama and Romney have been closely matched in each of the three swing-states polls, conducted in October, late November/early December, and now in January. Obama and Romney have also been statistically tied in each of five polls conducted among national registered voters dating back to August."

OUCH, EH??? Next time actually do a little research into credible polling statistics rather than be spoon-fed want you want to hear from a flaming liberal 'polling group.' LOL!

Oh, and since we are having fun with polls. I suggest going back to last weeks liberal CBS poll, still much more credible than John Marshall, and read the poll...Romney over Obama NATIONALLY by 1% right now. Yikes, huh? LOL.

              Jim:

Between 1996 and 2001 Phil Gramm (R) John McCain (R) and Ken Lay of Enron pushed bills called the commodities reconciliation act and the Gramm Rudman Act. They and a handful of Republicans single handedly removed all the economic safe guards that we had placed since the Greedy crash of the Depression. From Housing to the oil markets and mass inflation including the loss of 8.5 million jobs. These hapless cowards set the platform for complete and utter failure. This same tired and failed policy persists today because of the influence peddling of these hegemonic demons.

How you can even pretent that this massive fleecing of our economy had anything to do with the current president, just boggles us all. I encourage you to stop watching the FOX News propaganda and educate yourself on what really happended from 1996 and through the George W. Bush Era. This kind of piracy of American prowess cannot be repaired in under 10 years according to leading economists and the US Government.

The President has made incredible strides considering the hand he was dealt. I have the greatest respect and admiration for our current President. He has proven him self a great leader, a great foreign policies commander and a person who is most compassionate of others. If you would elevate your knowledge a little, you would change your views overnight. Faux News is a fantasy show created by a Fascist element who spews his misinformation all over the world and is particularly popular with foreign dictators.

Begin your research with real information from real sources. Stop pandering to the very people who would have no problem with blaming you for the results of their latent greed.

So then, because you, as a libbie, cannot handle OPINIONS DIFFERENT FROM YOUR OWN ..... you then ramble into digs at my education of which you know nothing. I seriously wonder if you have the capacity to understand that our nation is up to its proverbial a$$ in debt, the level is rising rapidly and that the administration of Obama has totally turned his back on the Federal Budget !!

Then, of course. your "CRUTCH" is to lay all blame on his predecessor. I see no "real information" from "real sources" in your post, so you are merely pandering to Obama.

Since it was the same Republican majority in the House and Senate that created record deficit speniding under President Bush, I think it's more likely that President Clinton was responsible for the surpluses that the Republican President and Republican Congress destroyed. Makes no sense that a fiscally responsible Congress would suddenly become so awful. The only change was the Presidency.

              Clotho,

actually learn how our government works before posting, you wont look so silly. A president is merely a figurehead, he only signs or vetoes legislation...he cannot implement it or make it law...CONGRESS DOES THAT.

                #4.7 - Thu Feb 2, 2012 6:23 PM EST

You skipped a few small details about how the government really works, Roanoke. The budget was balanced for 2 (not 4 years, unless you accept borrowing from the Social Security fund as a revenue source) primarily because the Democratic Congress increased taxes (without a single Republican vote) in 1994. The Congress approves the budget, but it is drawn up and proposed by the President, so it is disingenious at best to give most of the credit to Congress. Incidentally, aren't you guys blaming Obama for the deficit that is (acccording to you) controlled by the GOP House?

                • 2 votes
                #4.8 - Thu Feb 2, 2012 7:26 PM EST

Yeah, details like Clinton fighting the repubs over and over on actually balancing the budget, until they finally refused to send him any bill without a balanced budget? When they kept their word, Clinton promptly vetoed it, five different times. Imagine that, a Dem pres vetoing a bill that balanced the budget? Sound a little familiar?

And no, no one is saying the the 9 trillion that Obama inherited is his fault...just the 6 trillion he has accrued in the mere 3 years he's been in office. And nice try, again, but the House was not won by repubs until the 2010 massive midterm victory. You might forget the Dems had a supermajority at the very beginning of Obama's term, which then fell to a complete majority with Scott Brown taking Kennedy's seat (Yikes) but the Dems still controlling the presidency, the House, and the Senate until 2010. Soooo, yeah. Still never even A BUDGET, let alone a balanced budget. LOL!

Again, you need to read up on how government works. Bills/legislation do not originate with a president. A president has an agenda...but ALL bills are first formed in the HOUSE, initially in committees. Which is why the House, under Clinton, was creating the bill, then sending it to the Senate where it would be re-hashed and the dems could put in or take out what they liked or disliked (if they had the votes)...it would then be voted on, and then in final form sent to Clinton to either sign or veto. Thats how it works. If the president is a lame duck like Clinton was, and if every bill that came to him was skewed way to the right because of too little dem influence in Congress, then Clinton can veto it over and over until he gets things in the bill he likes or until Congress overrides him with 66% of the vote...just like he did until finally he caved.

The major difference between NOW and THEN is that the Democrat-led Senate and President still control two-thirds of our government. So, all the jobs bills that have been PASSED WITH BIPARTISAN SUPPORT IN THE HOUSE have not even been given the time of day by Harry Reid and the obstructionist Senate. And even if, God forbid, the Senate actually voted on a House-passed bill, and God forbid it actually passed, then Obama would promptly veto it as well. So, please, it is YOU who is being disingenuous.

                    rlock--

                    just gotta ask two questions--

                    1)What scandel?

You must be one of a very few selected individuals that "have secrets" against our President, yet, in all your hate and bigotry have not used it yet. And

                    2) Why is that?

If it is something that will win the war for the Teapublicans, where is it-what is it-why is it still a SECRET--surely the country needs to know this little TIDBIT of truth(spew).

Hey--I'll bite. If you are going to use associations to explain how Obama is going to lose in NOV--I dare say you might look a little closer at your "pick of the litter" in candidates for the Teapublicans. Seems to me that there are associations of theirs that will put your feeble fantasy at peril.

nice cherry pick of a rather small, diminutive parcel of the argument. Bottom line, the scandal happened DURING HIS FIRST TERM. HE WAS THEN RE-ELECTED (by a larger % of libs than the first time he ran, even women in a larger %!!!!). This, after he humiliated his wife in front of the entire world, lied about it, used the oval orifice to stuff cigars in...orifices...blah blah blah. But don't let character stand in your way!!!

Please read and learn history before posting. During Reagan's time, they were not our enemies. Things change, governments change. Its called history. Bush at least put going to Iraq to a vote in CONGRESS WHERE DEMOCRATS SUCH AS HILLARY CLINTON VOTED TO GO TO WAR!!! LOL!!! This is very unlike Obama just sending our airforce to Libya to bomb another country with NO CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL AS REQUIRED!! LOL. But I dont blame you for not bringing that up. LOL.

They tell us were to go how long what to do how to do it, so if you are doing that then why is it bad when you see all over the TV about police military support. and yes even Seal Team 6. We work for Uncle Sam period. Look up the def of the word there AlexinPA and you will see the people you support each and every day are the people you disdain and hate. Cant do both there guy. For those who served and continue serving I could't be prouder families are broken hurt sick dying but you still serve maybe the idiots who keep calling this the socialist president need to look at bush also and every president. Read and learn hell take a college course the President did pass a law helping with college education, I do remember bush cutting that and other things.........hmmmmmmmmm

WASHINGTON – The parent company of an electric car battery maker that received a $118 million grant from the Obama administration filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Thursday.

New York-based Ener1 said it has been affected by competition from China and other countries.

Ener1 subsidiary EnerDel received a $118 million stimulus grant from the Energy Department in 2009, and Vice President Joe Biden visited the company's new battery plant in Indiana last year.

Current approval/disapproval is 44/49. He has this in a poor economy that is improving. If his approval gets to 50 by June, he will be re-elected. If it doesn't reach that mark he won't. Gallup trend lines show an upward approval trajectory of 1% per week. So we should know within 6 weeks if he is going to have a viable re-election. So, your "tick tock" comment is based purely on your belief, not facts, at this time. We will start having some facts around March.

Till then you don't know any better than anyone else.

Also notice that the CBO has said unemployment will climb, AGAIN, to over 9% by next year...(keep in mind Obama rejected the Keystone pipeline which would have created many jobs)

The housing market is still in the tank...

Jobless benefits are still in the hundreds of thousands...

CBO said the national debt and deficit will climb exponentially by next year...

Layoffs continue to increase as well...

With all these economic numbers continuing to get worse, Obama will have a very difficult time getting elected. NO PRESIDENT IN MODERN HISTORY HAS BEEN RE-ELECTED WITH AN APPROVAL RATING AS LOW AS OBAMA'S AT THIS POINT THE YEAR BEFORE THE ELECTION...

                              #9.6 - Thu Feb 2, 2012 11:36 AM EST

Obama only needs two of those five states mentioned, and he currently still leads in four of the five and is tied in the other one. Plus, those polls were taken BEFORE Romney's negatives started skyrocketing and his tax returns were released.

An incumbent President only has to worry about the strength of his challenger. The challenger must make a case for a complete change. Romney has only made a case for flip-flopping and tax avoidance by putting your money overseas. Not a lot of national appeal to that..............

To your other points: debt is down from last year/ unemployment is down/and most non speculative markets have seen housing rebound. Update your facts....

You also said, "jobless benefits are in the hundreds of thousands" LOL. The most anyone can get in jobless benefits is about $18,000 dollars. If what you meant to say was those receiving benefits is in the hundreds of thousands, then please remember that 92% of people are still working and things are getting better...

                              Mike,

Unemployment is down? You mean from the 8% we were promised after the $787 billion stimulus? LOL. Its currently at 8.6% after being at 8.4% last month, and the CBO just SAID THIS WEEK THAT IT WILL GO OVER 9% by next year (thanks to Obama's policies). CBO also said the same thing about the debt AND the deficit. But thanks for trying, maybe YOU should update YOUR facts.

And I meant jobless CLAIMS, which are in the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS, not jobless benefits... and yes, those benefits in which studies even done by Paul Krugman (Obama's boy) even state that extending the benefits only keeps people unemployed longer...Good times, thanks dems.

The housing markets HAVE NOT SEEN A REBOUND. They just took a spike downward again THIS MONTH. (again, update YOUR facts). LOL.

And no one cares about Romney's taxes...except for silly Dems who never said a word when ol John Kerry (the richest man to EVER run for pres) PAID LESS THAN ROMNEY IN TAXES. AND NEVER A PEEP FROM THE LEFT!! LOL. (this is the same man who was recently busted hiding his massive yacht in another state to avoid paying taxes on it...yep...good stuff dems). Thanks for the hypocrisy...

As for things getting better, tell that to the millions of unemployed...after all of Obama's failed promises...nearly 4 years later. Bring on 2012!!

Oh, okay, so Gallup ( a left-leaning polling group) and one of the most credible and historical, who posit that unemployment is at 8.6% now after being at 8.4% last month...is just lying!!!! Yeah, good stuff.

I listened to some financial guys from time to time. The noted that the many reasons and manipulations that are showing us an artificially lowered unemployment. They noted that people coming up on week 99 either took underemployment (me), applied for social security benefits. The interesting think was If they had some potentially disabling condition the SSA recomended them to apply for the SS disability instead - they would get more money that way.

If Santorum were to win the GOP nomination:

                                  Obama: 92%

                                  Santorum 6%

                                  Other: 2%

If Romney were to win the GOP nomination:

                                  Obama: 88%

                                  Romney: 8%

                                  Other: 4%

If Newt were to win the GOP nomination:

                                  Obama: 88%

Newt: <1% (of course he'll vote for himself)

                                  Other: 11.9999%

And if the GOP were not to nominate at all:

                                  Obama: 49%

                                  Ron Paul: 51%

JusBiden, I remember all too well how the uber-conservatives hijacked my Republican party and have done nothing but oppose our president on every issue. They don't give a damn about anything. Not YOU, not me, not the middle class or the US Economy. Just their own "scorched earth" policy. And, you can take your "kool-aid" comment and stuff it up you arse. The people who claim to be Republican in this race have no clue what Republican ideals are anymore. They've left too many of us out by their own purity tests. Perhaps in 2016, Chris Christie will run and be elected, but the current crop of conservative clowns are not electable.

Let Obama explain this one: GM(Government Motors owned by the people) is going to spend $3 billion on advertising. The Ad Agency is located in England and not a US company, once again the tax payer looses.

It's not the spending on ads it's the fact that they hired an overseas company to make those ads instead of one from this country. Remember it's our tax dollars, we own GM.

I think people are begining to wake up in this country and see what's really going on...The rich, through Mitt Romney is trying to buy their way to the whitehouse...The super pac team for Romney consist of hedge fund managers...what do you expect from Wall street?..Mitt has already said that poor people don't matter, corporations are people so all of you sheeple who vote for him are essentially cutting your own throats...How can a president who gives his 5 sons 100 million dollars a piece, hides money in other countries to prevent from paying taxes on it and has a net worth of over 500 million dollars relate to someone who has to work an extra job just to make sure the mortgage is paid, the utilities stay on and food is on the table for their family?...My God, what else does Romney have to do to show you he doesn't give a damn about the poor and middle class in this country?...He just wants the presidency to fullfill a dream for his dad and himself, and the ultimate power that goes along with that position...

Because he made a mistake the same as Mr. Geithner did on his forms. If his tax return was 500 pages and the only thing he missed was one form that omitted $1700 in taxes which he paid I think that is pretty good

The corrupt Washington Establishment, the status quo, is comprised of both Democrats and Republicans, so electing representatives based solely on partylines makes no sense. People should consider every Congressman, Senator, and Presidential candiate on an individual basis.

The best endorsement a Candidate could receive is to be publicly chided, ridiculed, and ignored by the status quo, the corrupt Washington Establishment and their supporters. Why? He's most likely someone who poses a serious threat to the existing corrupt Washington Establishment. Common sense and logic...

                                    Think about it!

Obama is emboldened alright, just look at his fundamental transformation results.

Highest percentage of population on food stamps ever... check

Half the country paying zero in taxes... check

Highest misery index since they started tracking it... check

Highest margin of right track/wrong track poll responses.... check

Highest period of prolonged high gas prices.... check

Millions of private sector jobs completely wiped out.... check

Obama is emboldened alright. I get cold chills when I think about what phase two of the fundamental transformation entails. It's mind blowing anyone could support this man or the destruction of this country, but there are the liberals cheering him on. Sickening.

This country is undergoing the worst economic period since the Great Depression. It was brought on by the zeal for deregulation that has been part of Republican politics for over 30 years, since Reagan adopted the theories of Milton Friedman. All the credit default swapping, mortgage-backed securities, hedge-funding jerks on Wall Street were enabled by a lack of regulators protecting the American public. George Bush brought that to the American people, and left it to the next president to fix, just as he passed on the costs of two wars to be paid after his administration walked out the door, all while cutting Americans' taxes.

Obama has tried to fix the George Bush debacle but has been blocked by Republican abdication of the responsibility to govern, which includes a duty to compromise in the best interests of the nation. Republicans made a pledge to an unelected Grover Norquist not to raise taxes, and they have made getting rid of Obama their chief political objective. Their use of filibusters to thwart legislative action has far exceeded the use of filibusters in the past.

Republicans now want to be rewarded for their obstructionism, including their exploitation of the power of filibusters. They've had a chance to govern and to create jobs, as they said they would, but have completely abdicated that responsibility to pursue their single-minded goal of getting rid of Obama. I'm no great fan of Obama's, but let's lay the blame where it truly belongs--at the feet of the relentless warriors for the wealthy--the Republican Party, the party that's been crushing unions for 30 years, the party that's been transferring wealth to the wealthy from the middle class for 30 years, the party that keeps telling us that lower taxes for the wealthy are necessary to induce the wealthy to invest and create jobs but aren't telling us that the "job creators" have run away and taken their bailouts and tax reductions to other countries whose workers they can exploit for higher profits, the party that will strive to defeat a constitutional amendment to set aside Citizens United because such an amendment would undermine the power of the corporate elites that run the Republican Party and, in fact, run this country.

It's not only time to hold Republicans responsible for their duplicity, but it's also time to run out of Washington every quasi-anarchist Tea Partier who hijacked the 2010 elections with promises they had no intention of fulfilling. It's time for people who care about other people to stand up and say we're better than this, we won't abandon our grandparents, our injured veterans, or our crazy, crippled, sick, and broken brothers and sisters to fend for themselves alone. It's time to stand up and say we want all people to receive affordable health care so they can accomplish what they're capable of accomplishing, and we're tired of the selfish, self-absorbed cynicism that has gripped America, courtesy of the Republican Party.

And, for God's sake, let's stop believing in the Friedman lies--that unfettered capitalism lifts all ships. The last 30 years have put the lie to the supposed benefits of deregulation, privatization, and "supply side economics." As much as Friedman employs lofty words that resonate with Americans, words like "freedom," "liberty," "democracy," and "responsible individuals," in practice, it's utterly failed to deliver of widespread prosperity.

As Romney said, the rich have done well, but he doesn't tell the half the story. The wealthy completely dominate America's economy. The top 20% now take home 85% of all income generated by all Americans. The most wealthy 400 American enjoy as much wealth as the bottom 150,000,000 Americans.

"New data released by the IRS reveals that, over a period of 12 years, tax rates for the richest 400 Americans were effectively cut in half. In 1995, the richest 400 Americans paid, on average, 29.93% of their income in federal taxes. In 2007, the last year for which the IRS has released data, the richest 400 Americans paid just 16.63%." Of course, we now know from the only tax return that Willard furnished that he paid even less than that by invoking a tax code that allows him to classify his income as "carried interest." Bet you a buck his earlier tax returns would show he paid even less than 13.9% in earlier years. As Warren Buffett, the second richest man in America, famously said, “There’s class warfare, all right, but it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war, and we’re winning.”

The Republicans have been ripping off middle class Americans for the last 30 years and has somehow succeeded in getting half of America to blame Democrats. This madness must stop. These frauds must be revealed for what they are--liars, connivers, hate-mongers, scammers, propagandists laboring mightily to effect the greatest redistribution of income upward that the world has ever seen.

I would think a new profitable facility here in this country would do it. by the time you build it and adhere to all the rules on business's and this new health care bill, the most of which seems to take effect after he is elected for his second term (maybe)! The part that scares me the most is after he is elected (IF) he has no reason the hold back anything. not that there is any correlation that I know of but Mr Obama's favorable rating seems to hover around 48% which is about the percentage of household receiving government money in some form.

Obama will have such a huge advantage in November we won't even need to go vote, or go through the hassle of finding a fake ID. Not only ill we not need to cast multiple votes, we can just stay home and watch it on TV, or Jersey Girls. Don't worry about a thing. This one's in the bag, baby. Stay home and relax.

Right. I forgot when Newt failed to qualify for VA. Due to thousands of illegal signatures he laughed it off as a "mistake."

Whoa---don't suggest that we Democrats could stay home and not even vote because the election is in the bag. Overconfidence can lose the election. Every single Democrat, Independent, liberal, progressive who's eligible to vote has to get out there and vote. You know who's going to stay at home on election day? What's left of sane moderate Republicans, that's who.

I dont know any center to right people staying home. but I do know that there are 17k more registered democraticvoters in Detroit than there are people old enough to vote. Im sure some of them will vote twice.

On the date of the passing of the great Angelo Dundee, I can't help but thinking that President Obama is the political equivalent of Muhammad Ali. Float like a butterfly, but sting like a bee. And at a time where the Republican Party is craving a Joe Frazier to take on the champ they are stuck with Zora Foley, Ron Stander and Sonny Liston AKA Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich.

In November 2010 Democrats were asleep at the wheel. Now they have awoken and have learned their lesson. Trust me, it won't happen again this year. We have seen this year what the Republicans really care about, staying in power.

Mitch McConnel said it himself, "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president". That's it? It wasn't about equal opportunity for all Americans, it wasn't about being more competitive in a global market, it wasn't about improving the education of our kids, it wasn't about working together nor fixing the economy. To him the most important thing to do was defeat Obama. Lindbaugh hoped that this president would fail. And now the only thing the Republicans are looking to elect is someone who can defeat Obama. Not someone who can fix this economy or some of the other things I just mentioned. To me that is pretty sad!

The Republicans say that Obama can't win on his record. Let's look at that for a moment. Sure, there are some items that haven't been achieved like the closing of Gitmo, but he has stopped the bleeding of this economy and some signs are showing that it is improving, whether you want to believe it or not. I am witnessing it personally. The company I work for can't keep its employees right now because they are finding better jobs with companies hiring them with higher wages. And I am not talking about minimum wage jobs, I am talking about professional jobs such as engineering.

Obama promised that he would go after Osama bin Laden and he did. Not only that, he also gave the go-ahead to take out the pirates that took the crew of the Maersk Alabama ship hostage back in 2009. He gave the go-ahead to send in more Navy Seals into Somalia to rescue the two American hostages just last week. There goes the "weak on defense" argument. He ended the war in Iraq, as he promised and the war in Afghanistan is waning now that the story has come out that it will end in 2013.

Obama promised to end "Don't ask don't tell" and allow gays to fight in the military. Something I know hits a nerve in most conservatives. Since then I haven't heard anything about it causing any problems, have you?

Obama is pushing to get more jobs back here in America and some companies are starting to lean in that direction. He has gone to other countries and has disussed trade agreements with these countries so that they would purchase goods from us. I have heard him push for a tax credit to those companies who hire Americans instead of outsourcing. I have heard him push for a bill that would eliminate insider trading within our government. Something I think all Americans would support.

Despite the bankruptcy of Solyndra, he, along with many of us, still believe that alternative energy sources like solar energy are important for our survival in this new economic world where Iran threatens to cutoff the Persian Gulf. Unlike Representative Darrell Issa of California who said "It is reasonable to predict that we could have the collapse of the entire solar panel manufacturing business in America." If more people like him were in congress back in the 50's and the 60's we would never have made it to the moon because a few rockets exploded. I understand that we will always need oil, oil went into the keyboard I am using right now. But I feel we need to get out of our comfort zone and keep pushing to find alternatives. Speculators are saying that we could see gas prices as high as $5 again this year. Is that what it is going to take?

I could go on and on about Obama's record. But when I compare it to the Republican's still it was all about defeating Obama and nothing else. I would like to see what their plans are. They want to cut programs and tighten the purse strings. Which, on a personal level makes sense. But on a larger scale, the problem is that many people will lose their jobs as a result. When people lose their jobs they don't spend money. If they don't spend money, businesses lose as well, meaning they have to layoff more people and the cycle goes on. But "so be it" according to House Speaker John Boehner. It's funny that Republicans argue that Obama wants to turn this country into a European socialist country, when I have been seeing a lot of headlines involving European countries and austerity lately.

Let's face it. The Republicans have nothing to go on. All they can do is bad-mouth the president and talk about their values, which I could care less about right now. During these primaries they are talking about an entirely different president than the one that is actually in office right now.

I believe that Obama sincerly wants to move this country in the right direction. I believe that if it wasn't for the Republicans constantly trying to block everything, we might be better off. If we really want to move this country in the right direction then the best thing to do is re-elect Obama and give him a Democratic super-majority in the House and Senate so that the Republicans will no longer be a factor. Now that the Democratic base is waking up this might become a reality.
