Read: A turning point for Obama?

Jason Reed / Reuters

President Barack Obama delivers remarks on American manufacturing in front of an Intel plant under construction in Chandler, Arizona January 25, 2012.

Are we seeing a turning point on the economy and for President Obama? … It’s a coin flip in Florida … The candidates debate one last time before voters go to the polls there – what to watch for … It’s Vegas, baby, Vegas for Obama, then off to Colorado – the importance of the West … A finger-wagging tense moment with President Obama and Tea Party favorite Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer … More than $20 million spent between Romney, Gingrich and friends … And to the moon!

Read the original: First Thoughts: A turning point for Obama?

*** A turning point for Obama? Six months of positive to semi-positive economic news is starting to have an impact with the American public, according to the latest NBC/WSJ poll. And that uptick is benefitting President Obama. This poll showed important one-year highs on the direction of the economy. By a 37%/17% margin people said it would better in a year vs. worse. That’s a seven-point jump in a month and a 16-point improvement from October. Right track, wrong direction is still just 30%/61%, but that right direction number’s an 8-point boost from a month ago, a 13-point bounce from October. And -- excluding the bin Laden bump in May -- the right track is the highest it’s been since February 2011.

*** Obama in positive territory for first time in six months: The president’s approval rating is at 48%/46%, the highest since June. There have been upticks like this before and the White House won’t be celebrating – remember, when there appeared to be “green shoots” in 2011 or 2010, something out of the president’s control -- whether it was the BP oil spill, the Greek debt crisis, or the Arab Spring -- derailed that optimism. But this poll does feel different. The positive economic data has been on a more consistent trend. By the way, how much is the president’s job approval benefiting from the economy or GOP race? The full poll, including a VERY deep dive inside the Republican race will be released tonight at 6:30 pm ET.

*** Anybody’s race in Florida: Five days until the voters go to the polls in the Sunshine State, the GOP presidential contest is very volatile. It’s a pure coin flip. Two polls out yesterday both showed Romney and Gingrich in a statistical dead heat, but with very different trends – one with Gingrich surging, the other with Romney on the rise. The bottom line is no one knows what’s going to happen, raising the stakes for tonight’s debate, the 19th of this cycle and the last one before this primary. We’ve seen a ton of late deciders in these early contests – 53% in South Carolina said they made up their minds in the last few days, 46% said so in both New Hampshire and Iowa. These debates have shaped this race as much as anything, and the big question is: who shows up -- “Good Newt” or “Bad Newt,” Aggressive or Passive Romney. Their approaches will tell us tonight where both campaigns think this race is headed. (Romney, by the way, got a boost in his electability argument with a Suffolk poll out this morning showing him beating Obama by five in Florida, but Gingrich losing by nine.)

NBC's Tom Brokaw talks about Rep. Nancy Pelosi's assertion earlier this week that Newt Gingrich will not be president, suggesting that she might have potentially harmful information about the Republican candidate for the White House.

*** Wild West: President Obama continues his whirlwind post-State of the Union tour with a speech at 10:00 am ET in Las Vegas, before heading to Colorado. Both are key to the president’s reelection hopes. With New Mexico, they could be his Western Firewall. Latinos, of course, are crucial -- they make up 27% of Nevada residents and 21% in Colorado. Obama will speak in Aurora, CO, which is in Arapahoe County, one of the pivotal swing counties in the country (it went for both Obama and Bush). By the way, how concerned should the White House be about the mediocre ratings for the State of the Union? Fewer than 40 million tuned in, down from a year ago.

*** Finger pointing: The president spoke in Arizona and had a tense exchange with Arizona firebrand Gov. Jan Brewer, a Tea Party favorite, at the airport yesterday where she met him. AP captured an image of the governor with her finger pointed sharply at the president. She says he asked about an unflattering mention of him in her book, which led her to calling him “thin skinned.” It’s something that’s going to keep the conservative media fired up today. She gave them something to chat about. It’s certainly not exactly the kind of picture you think of when a governor greets a president.

*** Tough interviews and Gingrich’s moon shot: Don’t miss the interviews yesterday with Romney and Gingrich with Jorge Ramos. He pointedly went after both men’s weakness -- Romney on his wealth and Gingrich for his extra-marital affairs. It’s hard for Gingrich, in particular, to “attack the media” in this instance when he and his rival are trying hard to court the significant conservative Cuban vote in Florida. Also yesterday, speaking of issues important to Florida, Gingrich went after the Space Coast vote, going so far as to pledge, "By the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon. And it will be American.”

*** Big money: Just how important is Florida to both the Romney and Gingrich candidacies? Romney and Gingrich allies are spending more than $20 million between them to try and win it and possibly put away the GOP nominating fight. Here’s the latest:

- Pro-Romney: $15.4 million (Romney campaign: $6.6 million, Restore Our Future $8.8 million)

- Pro-Gingrich: $3 million with another $3 million promised (Winning Our Future $2.7 million, Gingrich campaign: $282,000)

***On the trail: No surprise here: All the candidates (except Ron Paul) are campaigning in Florida: Romney stumps in Jacksonville …Gingrich holds rallies in Mount Dora and Jacksonville … Santorum visits Tallahassee … All the candidate will attend tonight’s debate in Jacksonville beginning at 8:00 pm ET on CNN and co-hosted by the Republican Party of Florida and the Hispanic Leadership Network.

Countdown to Florida primary: 5 days
Countdown to Nevada caucuses: 9 days
Countdown to Super Tuesday: 40 days
Countdown to Election Day: 285 days

What a President all hail his accomplishments only 6 in 10 think the countries is heading in the wrong direction. what optimism. Least watched speech in his Presidency, only 1 Bush Jr speech had lower viewership (bahahaha). Spin that!

I'm no Obama fan, nor a fan of any of the two political parties who are equally to blame for the crappy representation America must suffer under every day. What about hailing the accomplishments of the citizenry, where 6 out of 10 are RESPONSIBLE for us heading in the wrong direction!?!

FYI -- A President is ONE INDIVIDUAL out of over 300 Million, and has the least amount of responsibilities per the US Constitution, yet is blamed for all the crap that emminates from building with the dome on top and those who vote them yahoos in! We've had a few decent Presidents and a lot of horrible ones, but ultimately it's the responsibility of the citizenry to determine the path they want their country to take---if they accept corruption it will be corrupt, if they accept innovation it will be innovative, if they accept warmongering it will be in wars, if they accept progress it will be progressive.

We alone determine our own path! Oh, and you know darn well Bush couldn't speak, please.

How dare you show such vile disrespect fo9r the office of the Presidency. My husband is lifetime military and though he disagrees with President Obama on many issues one of the first things he learned in the military was to show respect for the office even when disagreeing. Calling our President a puke shows everyone you lack basic courtesy and you lack basic intelegence, Anyone can sling around insults, in fact that's what this country has come to overall=both parties trashing and attacking and preaching to their respective choirs by behaving like brutes. Is that what we have been reduced to? A bunch of half wits so busy pointing and name calling we don't realize we as a country are on the verge of collapse? It isn't illegal immigrants or other scapegoats who are destroying our country. No, it's this rhetorical blame game. As long as we blame and bash we do not fix.

Elka24 I totally agree with you..It does not matter what party you are, people are still disrespecting the President no matter what party he is..and you are right the immigrants are not ruining this country the people who are americans are tearing this country apart...I aplaud your husband for being a lifetime military soldier..I had one Uncle who was a POW in Germany during World War 2 and two Cousins that did three tours in vietnam and also cousins in the first Gulf war and just recently..so it is just too much disrespect to the these military people who gave us our freedom to speak...

Spry. Well said. Americans created this mess by allowing these opportunistic politicians to have their way. And the super pac? Good Lord we need to fire the supreme court judges immediately. It really is the American people against DC/politicians at city, county, state and federal level. Now prior to the internet hwy and freedom of information act the people did not have access or knowledge of the corruption but we do today and must stand together as Americans. It saddens me how divided we are. It saddens me that the president is disrespected and not given credit for his acomplishments. I am sure it would be worst with mc/payme. We made the right decision electing Obama and will again. Obama 2012

It took him 3 years to unravel an economy and a President that had zero domestic policy who was in the White House for almost a decade. Yes and a recession that started in 2006, so this has been a tough one.

Their two GOP hopefuls taut capitalism and free market and then poke each others eyeballs out defining what might be called "ethical acquisition of wealth" and who was more ethical in acquiring it. As much as I enjoy watching this bloody beating, it's turned into "reality" TV debates. That is insulting and non-productive,even though I am far from being a Republican, I would prefer substance in their explanations.

A turning point? No new jobs, bigger government, the same speech as he made before Obama's last term, housing foreclosures 40%, no jobs, bigger government and today the democrats in senate over the objection of the house give the president 1.2 trillion more money added to the defect to spend. So how is he planning to save the middle class by driving a GM Volt made by the government and the Union with green batteries that explode?

Go see the Liar King and you have seen the liar Socialist Democratic s led by OBAMA. How exactly does President Obama use the race card? Republicans/Conservatives will often say things like that without backing it up. Jobs have been created. Under Bush's leadership is when the housing market exploded with people that could not afford their mortgages. Also, Bush is the one that expanded the Food Stamps program. Taxes are lower under Obama than they were under Reagan(Your god). So, tell me how he will not allow a poor person to become rich? Also, tell me how it is close to fair that people that do not produce a product and often do not risk their own money can become intensely rich off of the backs of working people? Getting bailed out if their investments turn out to be bad ones. President Obama was handed an economy that was headed toward an abyss. Now I now you would have had all the answers and done all the right things. Doing nothing was not a solution. Now you may think it was unconstitutional to take over GM,etc. Should'nt companies that are the back bone of our nation be helped when in need? Werent they the ones that this nation turned to in WWII to stop doing what they did and help with the war effort? Was it ok for the government to "take them over" then? Republicans need to get over it and realize Obama is President and probably will be after the next election. But sitting around not compromising and complaining about every single thing he does is very immature. The Republican Party has done nothing but oppose him and stated that they want him to fail. When has an opposing party ever taking that stance against a President when the nation was in a difficult time? Republicans are becoming synonymous with losers, haters, however you would like to phrase it.

Then why don't you run for President since you and everyone else on here believes they could do a better a job. How successful do you think you would be if you entered a position where over half were against everything you recommended and on top of that, had to try and get enough Congress members to meet the minimum vote to agree to it!

A President has the least amount of duties per the US Constitution (try reading it sometime), so blaming him for the economy that he has no personal control over, or the PURSE that Congress spends out of every year, simply proves that our schools aren't doing enough to educate our citizens on how our government, a Federal Republic, truly operates. BIG Sigh.

Leo, How can you call Fox, fair and balanced? They even went to court for the right to lie!!!

In February 2003, Fox appealed the decision and an appellate court and had it overturned. Fox lawyers argued it was their first amendment right to report false information. In a six-page written decision, the Court of Appeals decided the FCC’s position against news distortion is only a “policy,” not a “law, rule, or regulation.”

Plus, MSNBC doesn't call itself fair and balanced, when it's not---they call themselves progressive !!

Both are slanted each extreme but I definitely give the most biased vote to FOX, they complain about the color of Michelle's panties

Our President came to Arizona yesterday to plug his new (OLD) agenda. He visited the Intel plant in Chandler which he was NOT responsible for creating nor causing new jobs. But what he did do is manage to cause many people who worked there to not get paid for the day. Thanks Mr. President for helping Arizona's economy and disrespecting our Governor.

President Obama came to Arizona as any president would do to see the new manufacturing plants and speak to arizona citizens and what does brewer do? Go running out there like a UNEDUCATED MENOPAUSAL nutcase wacko for her fox photo opt and make a disgraceful laughing stock out of az, AGAIN.

How long has the Intel plant been there? And I suppose George Bush is responsible for a company setting up shop there? The only thing George Bush was responsible for is 2 wars at a horrific cost in both lives and money and a freeway in the Dallas area, and the freeway because he had nothing to do with it, they borrowed his name, before the fallout of his 2 terms in office.

Republicans are going to lose and it is apparent by their behavior. It amazes me how Conservatives/Republicans have lost their sense of respect when it comes to President Obama. Imagine what would be said if President Obama was wagging his hand in the Governor's face. Her using the word "threatened" is really sad and unfortunate because she is playing into a lot of stereotypes. What did she think he would do, slap her once he touched down? Brewer is the one that obviously has a problem, having to discuss publicly incidents that she claims occurred between her and the President. Does she think she is the first person a President has expressed displeasure with? Obama should steer clear from her in the future because it is clear what she is all about. It is obvious the tide is turning in Obama's favor when the same party that bashes Clinton about his private life now say it is no big deal because of Gingrich. Morals are out the window now. But quiet as it is kept, it began with McCain because he did the same thing. No one made a big deal about it. Rush and Hannity will act like the church Obama went to or things people he knows did or said decades ago mean more than things that Gingrich and other Republicans actually do themselves. A big phoney, situation ethics/morality party. I have never seen people get praised for the type of disrespect that is directed toward Obama. But all of the sudden, anything goes in the Republican Party. Republicans are the biggest hypocrites around. Tell me where what they claim to represent lines up with what they actually do. Love him or hate him, but Obama has done or tried to do everything he said he would. That is literally a trait of integrity. But let Republicans tell it, he is the biggest liar and most vile man to ever be President.

Thanks. They have lost all objectivity. Have we ever heard about every detail of a President's activities before? They look for any and everything to oppose him about. Even when he incorporates their ideas, they change their minds, lol. I do not know what the confusing is about when a party says they are going to oppose the President on every hand and make sure he fails. Who expects anything to get done in that kind of atmosphere. Gingrich was brought up on ethics charges and kicked out of his Speaker position, but in their minds, anything is better than Obama. Sick puppies.

The more I consider this, the more I think Obama should get another term. The "fox news" conservatives hate is guts, treat him with zero respect, call him a communist and worse, the progressives have a fit because he's not progressive enough. I really think he represents me, average JOE American. He has a nice left handed jump shot, acts like he can play golf. I look at the current GOP field and watch in humor as they attack each others wealth and integrity while trying to convince us that their form of capitalism and free market is the best thing, and watch them stumble over one another. I conclude, Obama 2012!!!!!!!!!

President Obama never tells the whole truth. He always points a finger at those which do not do his bidding. He must be reminded that when you do that, four more fingers are pointing back to him. I don't believe we have every had a president who is a total "socialist". He he was brought up with socialist, Marcist beliefs, and he totally believes that the rich has to be forced to share their hard earned monies and support those that do not like to work or have no ambitions to get ahead on their own (making the so-called underpriviledge become slaves of the government). He is crazy! He has given so much power to the Unions that now even small businesses are picketed, pushed around and made their livelihoods almost impossible. I say GID RID OF ALL UNIONS! The unions have taken away our right to work where we want to, without having to be bullied and threatened. I was forced into the SEIU (they never do anything for its members, just take their money). I never had a choice when they forced us to join the SEIU. I worked in government for 42 years and my last three years, before retirement, were the worst under the SEIU. It was like walking on egg shells. They lied to employees, they threathened employees with harm, not only to the employee but even to their families if they did not comply with their wishes. I hate the SEIU and pray that some day, they will collapse. However with OBAMA in the White House, he supports them. Union leaders have been invited to the White House probably more than any other group of people. That shows you where OBAMA's indebtedness lies. Also, some of his CZARS have been felons, and former Members of the Weather Undergound as well as many other terrorist groups who have tired to bring America to its knees. His wife is also connected to Mr. George Soros. (Soros is also personal friend of Hillary Clinton). Mr. Soros is a Jew, multi-billionaire, and hates Jews, hates America, waiting for the American Dollar to collapse to make billions, and now has heavily invested in the News Media organizations and has some control to say in what can and what cannot be covered or said. Some of these are Channels ABC, NBC, CBS. National Public Radio (NPR), the Tide Foundation, Apollo Alliance (they wrote Obamacare), Sierra Club, Alliance for Justice, etc., many other socialist organizations, and many other news media stations, in this country and other nations. He is the person that broke the bank of England, and the collapse of other European Countries. People should read up on him and the thousands of organizations that he controls through the Open Society Institute you will be shocked. Obama is playing into Soros objectives. I would say. that if he has connections, direct or indirect, with George Soros, then I can say "that birds of a feather, truly fly together.... That is the kind of President that we now have. Do you really want this man again to be America's leader? I surely don't want any part of him. I have done my research, have you? I am a democrat and I don't like what he represents. I feel that if we allow him to be reelected the U.S.A. will be closer to a socialist dictatorship, similar to communisim where "We the People" will no longer have any freedoms left. Like it or not, this is the truth... Do Your Own Research. Read between the lines in Obama's speeches! Ask Questions! Don't be swayed by what you are told, or see on ads--they want to confuse you! Educate yourself! Thank you.

Oh for God's sake, why are liberals all called Communists?? The Cold War is over. We don't need another Red Scare. At least the sane America doesn't. Mistie, if you have a problem with the president's policies, just say it. But leave the commie crap out of it. I am tired of the conservatives warning us about "Socialism." What is so bad about a taste of Socialism?? I mean, we have suffered under perhaps 40 years of right-wing trickle-down economics (a hint of class warfare and aristocratic fascism), why can't we experience at least 10 years of the left??? I mean, contrary to what people what Rush Limbaugh say, socialism isn't all that bad. Sure there is the lack of economic freedom and the atheist leadership, but socialism has a bit of benefits. Education for all (education is a RIGHT), low cost health coverage, those come from socialism. A lot of American programs, like entitlements and welfare, were considered socialist, but they have done WONDERS for sustaining capitalism. So I think America needs a shot of Socialism every now and again to balance out the numerous problems of capitalism. So Mistie, stop using the commie-bashing; it makes you and thunder look like bigoted idiots. You want to bash the left?? Go to the 1950s; you'd have a great job working for Joseph McCarthy ruining lives for the sake of fame and fortune. Play the man, and stop hiding under the curtain of communism. Compared the fascism that we've had over the past few decades, a shot of socialism would be at least a bit less rough.

                                                                                    Sincerely,

I thought he was more focus, confident, passionate, determined and connected in the SOUT. I have been wanting him to be more aggressive, at the same I understood why he wasn't. As an African American, if he or his wife had responded aggressively to some to the blantant racism and chinacery from the Repubicans in the last three years, they would been distracted and on the defence most of the time, and even less would have gotten done. As it was, they got some things done, but could have gotten more done, if the Republicans were not playing games in their attempts to make him fail. It is sad when these people who call themselves educated Christian people, who acted like ignorant self-serving mean spirited people. I am hoping the Republicans can put the Country and people first, the the next four years, when Obama wins again. I hope most the Republicans in the House and Senate will be voted out, so things can be done. I for one am sick and tired of them. They have do no-thing since they were elected in 2010. That was the biggest mistake the American people have done, since electing George W. Bush in 2000, and 2004. I pray the President will stay focus on the needs of the Country and people.

"You won't get your choice of your own physician" probably 90% of physicians Americans go to should be FIRED, if you look and see how obese this nation is. I'll bet if you were to analyze how many Americans can run 1 mile around the high school track without croking, it would be maybe 2 out of 100. Maybe. That's because our current system does not make anyone healthy
