Daniels: State of the union is 'grave,' but GOP can rescue

The state of the union is "grave," Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels asserted Tuesday evening in the Republican response to President Obama's State of the Union address.

Daniels painted a dark portrait of the nation's fiscal and economic situation, blaming Obama for the struggling economy, while promoting the Republican agenda as the best alternative to Obama and Democrats.

"On these evenings, Presidents naturally seek to find the sunny side of our national condition," Daniels said. "But when President Obama claims that the state of our union is anything but grave, he must know in his heart that this is not true."

It was a pessimistic contrast to the president's more upbeat message, but Daniels pledged the GOP would offer a more upbeat alternative for voters in the coming election season.

"So 2012 is a year of true opportunity, maybe our last, to restore an America of hope and upward mobility, and greater equality," he said. "An opposition that would earn its way back to leadership must offer not just criticism of failures that anyone can see, but a positive and credible plan to make life better, particularly for those aspiring to make a better life for themselves.  Republicans accept this duty, gratefully."

Daniels, a former Office of Management and Budget (OMB) director, had himself been favored by a number Republicans as a dark horse choice in this year's GOP presidential primary. He's regarded as a darling among fiscal hawks in the party, and was chosen by House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to deliver the rejoinder to the president.

Daniels hit on a series of Republican talking points, criticizing the Obama administration for expanding spending and debt, but also for canceling projects like the Keystone XL pipeline, a transnational oil pipeline Republicans had favored as a jobs initiative.

The Indiana governor also laid out several broad prescriptions as a GOP alternative to Obama, calling for tax reforms and repairs to entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security to ensure their solvency.

"The mortal enemies of Social Security and Medicare are those who, in contempt of the plain arithmetic, continue to mislead Americans that we should change nothing," Daniels said.

But Daniels also challenged Republicans to strike a unifying chord, which the conservative governor said was in contrast to Obama, whom he characterized as a divisive leader.

"No feature of the Obama Presidency has been sadder than its constant efforts to divide us, to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others," he said.

"As a loyal opposition, who put patriotism and national success ahead of party or ideology or any self-interest, we say that anyone who will join us in the cause of growth and solvency is our ally, and our friend," Daniels added, admitting that Republicans had not always been as successful in the past at bring Americans together. "We will speak the language of unity."

So what else is new? Just more of the Grand Obstructionist Party's gloom and doom, the sky is falling retoric. If you can scare enough of the people they may follow you thinking you'll help them. Stupid sheep will be led off the cliff. Pay attention peeps, these folks are only going to help themselves and their rich buddies.

Your right Suzq1497446. It's all doom and gloom. The Democraps want to tax everyone and spend everything. Where is Obama's transparency and bipartisanship? Oh ya just more lip service like we heard tonight! The harder my wife and I work, the more Obama takes from me and my family. Between the two of us we work five jobs to make ends meet and for our family to survive. We are no where the $1 million dollar mark and we make more than $100k. I am tired of paying for people like you who are waiting for your hand out.

GOP tp the rescue? Seriously, folks. These jerks let one of the chief orchestrators of the Bush debacle of the last 8 years speak for them. For God's sake, he was Bush's budget director. Further, this is the man that is attacking unions and wanting to end collective bargaining rights for working middle class people.

If that is the man you want to speak about how your party can "rescue" us, gentlemen, THANKS BUT NO THANKS!

We the people are tired of your lies. Unlike your elections, we will not be bought or sold.

Their idea of GOP "rescue" is what got this country in the mess we are in: tax cuts for the wealthy, off shore tax breaks and incentives, and continual wars that are not paid for! They are idiots...plain and simple.

This, as Daniels is engaged in a war against his own citizens, trying to remove the job protections that the unions have fought for and won. It is shameful that he says that the only people that can be considered allies and friends are those who attack the working class families that have made this nation strong and secure for the past generations.

We don't learn. Societies that allow too great a difference between the rich and poor do not survive. Daniels is trying to further the destruction of this nation.

Yeah, the state of the nation is grave, and the GOP and Dems have held hands creating it for the past ten years.

In fact, it's so grave they came up with SOPA and the NDAA.

Republicans and Democrats in Washington seem convinced the way to solve our problem is with another ten year war in Iran, 5 trillion more tax payer dollars down the toilet.

That and the fight against online piracy.

These are their solutions.

The party of NO is at it again, If it’s not threatening to obstruct unemployment benefits for people out of work caused by their economic policies over the eight years of the Bush debacle, it was their opposition to the Economic Recovery Act, or Health Insurance Reform, or Cash for Clunkers or the Credit Card Holders Bill of Rights than it’s their desire to destroy Social Security, or their lying about WMD, or death panels all the while giving their rich, corporate, puppet masters obscene tax breaks. By the time the GOPee gets done there will be a rich 1% and the middle class will look like refugees in a third world country.

Oh please, both parties are full of @!$%# and you all can't seem to figure that out. Obama gives the same speech with some good points that should be taken into consideration, esssentially points that republicans have been fussing over, and they ignore those parts. Then you have Obama essentially rehashing the same talking points with the Dream Act, tax the rich, bad banks, bad former republican predecessor.

Face it, there are two very divergent ideologies at war here. Can we survive the battles of the extremists? Where is the middle road, where is the person who can lead from the middle? It ain't Obama, much of what he said tonight was a repeat of previous speeches (altho I applaud his talking about no more bail-outs, ever, we really, truly do need that) and not much to talk about with the crop of republicans running for office either.

@Jungleboogie - What's with the false equivalencies? When bush was president, no one ever cried about the GOP and Dems screwing everything up. As a matter of fact, the GOP claimed that the Dems were traitors. If anyone said anything even remotely negative about bush, the were quickly demonized, just ask the Dixie Chicks.

But now that Obama is president, it's the GOP and Dems that are to blame. When Obama tries to pass meaningful legislation, the GOP is always obstructing, and I mean always. When the Dems also try to pass meaningful legislation, yep, you guessed it, the GOP is there to obstruct once again.

Yet, in your mind, it's both parties and the only examples you can come up with is SOPA and NDAA. I wholeheartedly agree with you that those two bills are trash and it comes at a price for the average Joe/Jane, but look beyond that and you will see tons of obstruction by the GOP.

The GOP wants to end healthcare for all (ObamaCare), they want to get rid of the department of education, they want to eliminate the minimum wage, unions, child labor laws, EPA, and what they consider entitlements, Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security (I paid into those so it's my right to collect, and it's not an entitlement in any way, shape, or form). They also want to continue tax breaks for the very rich, or as bush put it, "My base".

These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how the GOP wants to control the US.

@North GA Individual -- The 'talking head' pundits were dismissing Obama's speech because it did not contain anything big or bold. Obama presented a laundry list of small ideas.

The current Congress (and our current politics) cannot accomplish anything big or bold. Anyone that has been a leader understands it is far better to celebrate small accomplishments than try to justify big, bold failures.

Obama presented low hanging fruit that both Democrats and Republicans should be able to pick - together. 2011 was a year of astoundingly huge blunders. Our elected government needs to learn how to accomplish something again.

@giovanna - Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful reply;

Syria & Iran are the next Iraq. I don't see much dissent within the Democrat's ranks. In fact, dissent is still quelled. If you don't agree in invading Syria and Iran, you are no longer painted as 'unpatriotic', now you are painted as 'crazy'. (ala Ron Paul) Same deal as Iraq, except now Democrats are in power. I don't see that as a false equivalency, do you?

All the steps we are taking towards Iran are the EXACT same steps we took towards Iraq. In regards to U.N. actions, the Arab League, unverified WMD claims, covert CIA ops, etc.

The Democrats, just as the Republicans before them, made no cuts to pay for the actions in Libya, troops in Africa, along with the continuing actions in Afghanistan. The solution: Print money, borrow money, watch the U.S. dollar continue to slide and blame the other party for it.

Last time I checked we ranked behind Cuba in education. You really think the department of education would be a great loss?

The EPA is a nightmare for the small business owner. Most of the regulations benefit large corporations and keep small business out or shut them down. Have you actually seen the majority of the actions by the EPA? Little tiny fines which are almost like a subsidy paid by corporations to the EPA. Like flies to an elephant. When confronted by big oil, the EPA does exactly what it is told.

Daniels actually said a few things tonight designed to appeal to moderates. He suggested that the wealthy shouldn't be getting advantages of programs for the poor. Daniels likes to sound like a wise moderate and doesn't go after the Tea Party type Red meat. But Daniels is a snake and a liar. Daniels chided his own legislature last year and told them the Right to Work wasn't right for Indiana and convinced them to back down. That got the Democratic legislators to come back and end their boycott that was getting pretty ugly. Republicans tried to get law enforcement to bring the legislators to the State House in handcuffs. Daniels diffused that with seemingly level headed thinking. But it worked just fine because he got the Democrats back and passed a bunch of other legislation they opposed with the overwhelming Republican majority. They came back and got defeated on a lot of stuff, but RTW was off the table. Lot's of people in Indiana would recall him if they could.

Then this year, everything changed. First item on the agenda for Republicans was RTW again, and this time Daniels was 100% behind it. Daniels rallied a significant political action group who are supporting it and campaigning with a mass TV ad campaign. He was against it before he was for it. Watch for Occupy SuperBowl. Daniels has pushed far right legislation and privatized many aspects of government. He is credited with a budget surplus, but only has a short term surplus from selling off the State. He is as arrogant and vengeful as they come and has repeated tried to punish the few Democratic strongholds in the State. Indiana elected Obama in 2008 by a close vote, but the State legislature is dominated by Republicans by over two to one. Much of this thanks to redistricting.

This guy is a business good old boy who takes good care of those who back him. Lots of very questionable deals in his closet. Probably why he decided not to run for President because once the national media started vetting him, this stuff would come out without the bias he controls in the local media.

Don't forget too that this was the fool who said the Iraq war would cost $80 billion tops. He designed a lot of the Bush economic policies while heading OMB. He's one of those little short guys with an attitude too. He controls himself very well in contrived public situations, but is a vengeful little rat in more private settings.

What bothers me about his being given this position to speak when his second term is almost over, is that I believe many traditional Republicans may be thinking coup at the convention. Very late in the game for him to be thoroughly vetted by the media. And without a doubt, Daniels is a good old boy Republican that cares not about social issues but is strictly about money. He's not your Tea Party type at all and is an old school wheeler dealer out to make the rich richer. Including himself. This guy can not be trusted.

Apparently tymke would approve of the landed gentry system in 19th century England where a few lords owned virtually all of the land and wealth and everybody else worked for them for peanuts. When we talk about the wealthy few in this country for the most part we are not talking about somebody who earned the money with his own hands and brain, we are talking about people who had money and sat on their butts or serve on some Board while a manager invested for them. The innovative and deserving people in this country are small businessmen and they regularly get the shaft because they can't afford to donate millions to some PAC. Republicans are not "business friendly," they are wealthy friendly.

How ist that fair!! We need more people to pay taxes, we cannot expect the wealthy to pay more just because they have more. Fair would be for everyone to pay the same percentage regardless of income. @Tmyke -- You are another 'free enterprise' apologist. 'Free enterprise' is NOT capitalism. 'Free enterprise' - 'free market' economics - is simply redistribution of wealth using profit models.

Is software piracy wrong? Is bootleg products manufactured in China wrong? After all, those pirates invested enough capital to produce and sell a product. Isn't that 'free enterprise' at work - making profits?

A pirate is making profits from the WORK of someone else. Someone invested their labor - their intellect - to create something of greater value - to create wealth. A pirate redistributes that wealth to themselves - by investing enough capital to generate profits.

Private equity - venture capital - does not create wealth by restructuring an existing company - by downsizing the workforce - by liquidating assets. Private equity - venture capital - create profits. Those profits redistribute any wealth created by the company to venture capitalists. Why is that any different than pirates?

A business that employs 1000 workers and makes zero profits - is more successful - than a business that employs 500 workers and makes 50% profits. A successful business creates wealth and distributes that wealth among those that contribute to its creation. A business that redistributes created wealth using profit models is a failure under capitalism.

'Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness' is not about creating profits. Our founding documents are about creating wealth and allowing everyone an opportunity to share in that created wealth. Using profit models to redistribute wealth created by the work of others is one of the most un-American things possible ...

The absurd belief that all we need to do is isolate "one problem" and fix it to take care of all our problems is one of the reasons that we're in this mess to begin with. Our country is not as simple as you seem to believe. In the "real world" you don't fix something by putting someone who refuses to acknowledge or consider the scale of the problem before them in charge and expect anything to get done.

    Nerm,

Your post is far more profound than it appears on the surface. Obama is trying to pull the country together. If you listen to the speech, you cannot conclude otherwise. The Republicans have one agenda, the Republican Party, and they will create division, hatred, even violence and threats of revolution to further that end. It's clear there is a fascist mentality at work there. Hopefully, this is just a phase, albeit a dangerous one.

This is the biggest load of counterfactual lies I've heard in a long time.

As for "pulling the country together," one could only believe such a lie if one were to completely ignore all that has thus far been said to the contrary and elevate a pack of "tell them what they want to hear" bald-faced lies to the level of legitimate discourse. The author of "they bring knives, we bring guns," and "they're the enemy" is not any kind of healer or peacemaker, and the so-called Nobel "prize" proclaiming so isn't worth any more than any shattered stone monument to Herod's "greatness" as a god among men that's been trampled underfoot for twenty centuries. If you listen to the speech of a politician and conclude anything otherwise than that it is the speech of a politician and means nothing whatsoever to the mind of an honest man, then you have no capacity for critical thnking. Empty talk is just empty talk. Only fools and babies believe empty talk.

More so than any before them in history, the Demo(n)crats have divided society into separate, nagging, bickering factions to pander to, splitting as with an axe between male and female, between culture and culture, between generation and generation, cutting apart at every conceivable social fault-line, their only agenda being to advance their own narrow party interests which seems solely to be "divide and conquor" for the one solitary purpose of enlarging government and increasing its reach and power--a thing that is anathema to the idea upon which the United States was founded in the first place. The Demo(n)crats demonize anyone who seeks middle ground, hating no one nearly so much as they do someone who only partly agrees with them and spewing insult and abuse at the most sensible comments in these fourms, collapsing voices of simple reason as intolerable simply because they don't agree with the radical agenda of the left or--worse!--present a logical coherent argument against some leftist pet project. They can't even refer to the party across the aisle without using denigrating words, vulgarities, profanities, toilet and sick room references, yet they constantly accuse that other party of hatred, and push for "anti-hate" laws that only target those who Democrats hate--anyone who doesn't neatly fit into the selective narrow factions they pander to. They indoctrinate the young with their constant mean-spitited mantra equating their opposition with evil, yet their own behavior is far more often, far more publicly and plainly just that--evil.

They have historically more often resorted to violence to express their views; riot and destruction seem to come naturally to a Democrat. And all the while they're destroying things, smashing them on the ground with their fellow human being, they're patting themselves on the back for being the party of "compassion" and concern for the weak, the underprivileged, the "poor" whom they keep in servitude with the pandering oppression of their institutional bigotry in the form of laws that destroy children, marriage, families, incentive, and responsibility. No one with his eyes open and his ears attentive to the cries of the rampaging mob of leftists and their demands could possibly be unaware that every call for revolution and violent response, every agitation to stir up envy and greed and fan the flames of bitterness and resentment from those who refuse to control their own urges, those least likely to take responsibility for their own actions, comes from the left side of the street, not the right.

Is North GA a breeding ground for those who are receptive to Lennin's policy of accusing the opposition of being what the communist is himself? Or is that location merely incidental to its resident's delusional myopia?

    I am not a Republican.

    I don't even LIKE Republicans.

But I put the (n) in parenthesis to highlight a persistent and observable pattern that holds almost exclusively on these forums, a pattern that makes it absolutely obvious what is what and who is who: it is almost rare to see the word "republican" spelled in any way that is not deliberately mean-spriited, vulgar, discourteous, and hateful. It is, on the other hand, very much so rare to see the word "Democrat" spelled in such kinds of mean-spirited and disrespectful ways.

Clearly, it is not those on the right of the specturm who most typically resort to evil, hateful, dishonest, and sociopathic behaviors.

    It is the leftist.

The mantra that Republican=evil is a misleading semi-myth that for constant repetition has had its effect, No doubt there are many gullible young people who believe this mean-spirited lie, having heard it so often. But which action is evil, the protection of a baby, or the killing of a baby? Marriage or promiscuous fornication? Freedom or slavery? They see a leftist actor in a Hollywood movie playing the part of a historical conservative, and see the hideous monstrous nature of the personality being portrayed, and never having learned to separate Historical truth from Hollywood fiction, fail to grasp that the noxious personality being seen on the silver screen is that of the natural reality within the heart of the leftist actor.

It is the Democrat that murders the unborn, that perverts marriage, that enforces his own ideology upon others, that demonizes his opponent, hurling mockery and ridicule because he cannot win a fair fight on the strength of his ideas, seeing that his ideas are, upon closer scrutiny, corrupt and demonic.

It's only natural that his tactics would be the same: corrupt and demonic.

I'll leave the (n) in there for all to see. It's uncharacteristic of an honest, civil criticism. But it points at the truth. Think of it every time you see the R word in a mangled, misshapen, misspelled form. And look into the windows of the hearts who write that way.

From a simple observation of the words posted in these forums, it so very clearly is true that the Democrat is so very much more often more likely than any other brand of human creature, to be an evil, domineering, self-righteous snake--the union stooge with a baseball bat who doesn't play baseball, the abortion "doctor" who takes life, never saves it, the lesbian teacher encouraging her students to disspate themselves with perversions of their natural biology and to believe the lie that gender is a matter of "choice," at least, that is, whenever it is not a matter of "born that way."

And whenever you look at a Democrat, see the man with the keys to the gulag and the concentration camp. Because this is where that kind of identity always leads.

The plain truth is right before your face. History is the evidence.

Then again hes prolly just a troll, maybe an intern paid to come troll this topic. Who knows? in either case hes definitely a troll. I love when republicans especially crazy ones get all hypocritical lmao. What a load of crap how are you going to say dems do that in the very same statement that you a republican are using those very same tactics against dems? I guess your basically telling everyone that you have no idea what you are talking about so you are using insults because your own arguments have no strength and merit. Who was your teacher? Newt Gingrich? hell I wouldn't doubt it if you worked for him lmao. Ah get a life dude and learn how to use the internet so you can actually do some real fact checking for once in your life.

Mr Anon; [My thoughts on why Reagan's plan did not work] Reagan was A good leader, and he wanted the country to move ahead, He wanted the wealth to trickle down that did not happen because of greed, and power! when the wealthy saw how much more profit they could make overseas they took advantage of it, the biggest cost to business in most cases is labor; when you reduce the cost of labor, you make more profits; people in business do not think like Reagan wanted, they do not just give someone more money, if the demand is there and they are making profits, they will pay more, but seldom will just volunteer to give a person more if they can work them for less!

then automation , robots, took some jobs etc. hiring illegal workers who work for less, along with no regulations, the mortgage frauds, etc. over the years Reagan became a name that was used to rally the troops, when anyone complained about the longer hours, and less money, inflation took some more, then when the collapse came, everyone was sorry, and promised they would change, as they fought against any change that the President tried to bring about, If Regan would have stayed in office it might have worked, but I doubt that ! among other things, !!!

    Outlaw,

You like others seem to live in some alternate reality. If you make less than 100k your taxes have gone down under this president. If you have a 401k it has been rescued from one full blown market crash and 3 medium crashes under Bush II and another full blown Bush I crash precipitated by Reagans economic policies of deregulation and market corruption. Almosts everyones economic interests were served by rescuing the American auto industry from collapse. You should feel safer knowing Bin Laden and Quadaffi are dead and just last night Seals rescued an American hostage, something the previous administration never had either the balls nor the desire to attempt.

I agree the Repubs have driven us off the cliff vis a vis unpaid for wars we had no business being in, tax breaks for wealthy, etc. The wealthy are not job creators. Small business is the real job creator in this country and they are floundering, for the most part, due to the stinky economy.

I also agree the Dems have to stop the handouts to people who truly do not need them. Why should any citizen be collecting any type of public assistance before THEY HAVE EXHAUSTED ALL OF THEIR OWN RESOURCES, including bank accounts, investment accounts and assets and property of all kinds. As long as they maintain their investments and assets, they are not TRULY NEEDY.

Anybody who is out looking for a handout should re-examine their own motives. Why should your neighbor support you when you have not done all you can FOR YOURSELF, FIRST?

Mitch Daniels was hired, and resigned, within Bush's first term. To vilify him as the creator of the economic crisis we are mired in is a flat out lie - perpetuated by partisan leftists on MSNBC.

Please look up all that has been accomplished in Indiana over the last 5 years before automatically hating the man because you saw an "R" behind his name.

I believe there are good people on both sides of the aisle. Mitch Daniels is one of those good people, if you would only take the time to look at him with both eyes open, and with the hyper-partisan glasses removed.

It is a shame this guy didn't run for the Republican nomination for President. He is a wonderful leader who tries to find the middle ground - but understandably, he is a Republican and his efforts lean that direction. But watering down his own efforts to try to see all citizens' views are a strong point of his.

I've sat here and read many pro Obama and anti- Republican rhetoric. It's interesting how a great job Obama has done dividing this nation. He's done one hell of a job of that. Yet the question I ask myself. Am I better off then I was three years ago. Well no I am not. In fact I am worse off then I ever was under either President Clinton with a Republican Controlled House which BTW did balance the budget 4 times and gave then President Clinton the surplus all you Democrats are so quick to point out that Bush and his Democratically Controlled Congress spent it all. Well during their Presidencies I will say this. I was making for the first time ever in my career in Automotive Sales over 120k a year. Yes I paid more than 40% of my annual income to taxes. Then three years ago the housing and auto industry in this nation took a turn for the worse. The two leading indicators to our Nations Economic health. I lost my job and went for almost two years unemployed. I did not get 99 weeks like most states gave. I only got 72 weeks of benefits. Then I went without a income for several months when I finally landed a job managing apartments for rent and a small salary of $238 a month. Oh yea did I mention I am also for the first time ever since I was a child, collecting Food Stamps. The last time I ever used Food Stamps, my mom was a single mother of three boys and had to receive Food Stamps in order to make ends meet. Since cleaning houses was not making enough to support us boys. Yea thank you Mr. Obama for bringing back my childhood memories of using Food Stamps. So yea I think Obama is doing a fine job. NOT! So this is what we have in store in the USA. More people on TANF, SNAP, Unemployment etc. That truly insures a voter base. Although this voter is not selling his vote for Food Stamps. I will take a better paying job anytime. It truly seems as though at least the GOP had me working during their control of our spending.

I love watching your two sides duke it out. It's so ridiculous and the reason why the establishment is able to get away with what they're able to get away with on a regular basis. And then, when somebody comes and and actually speaks reason, he gets ignored.

    "mygirl1

Oh please, both parties are full of @!$%# and you all can't seem to figure that out. Obama gives the same speech with some good points that should be taken into consideration, esssentially points that republicans have been fussing over, and they ignore those parts. Then you have Obama essentially rehashing the same talking points with the Dream Act, tax the rich, bad banks, bad former republican predecessor.

Face it, there are two very divergent ideologies at war here. Can we survive the battles of the extremists? Where is the middle road, where is the person who can lead from the middle? It ain't Obama, much of what he said tonight was a repeat of previous speeches (altho I applaud his talking about no more bail-outs, ever, we really, truly do need that) and not much to talk about with the crop of republicans running for office either."

The 1%ers that control both parties through lobbying (legal bribing) keep the people from noticing the real root of the problems of this country through a technique called "DIVIDE AND CONQUER." And these forums are a great way to sit back, eat some popcorn, and take a look at how well they've collectively done.

Pick the puppet on the right or the puppet on the left.

A business that employs 1000 workers and makes zero profits - is more successful - than a business that employs 500 workers and makes 50% profits. A successful business creates wealth and distributes that wealth among those that contribute to its creation. A business that redistributes created wealth using profit models is a failure under capitalism.

classless political system: the political theory or system in which all property and wealth is owned in a classless society by all the members of that society

I followed up your comment with the definition of "COMMUNISM". Read your comment, then the definition. Are you saying we should be communist?

Also, Why would an investor start a business if they knew they could not profit any more than the entry level mailroom guy? What incentive would there be for investment? Another point is this, I work for a company that required a billion dollars to start up. No one person had that capital. It took many investors (shareholders) to pool those resources. Those investors exist only on paper and have NOTHING to do with the daily operations, yet their money was essential to put a few thousand people to work. How does this fit with your arguments?????

Are you guys familiar with a company named Goodwill Industries? Goodwill Industries is NOT a charity - it is a non-profit business. Goodwill Industries has been under fire over recent years because their CEOs earn as much as $1 million per year. Goodwill Industries operates under capitalism - does create jobs - and does distribute the wealth created by those jobs back to the workers. There is not any economic rule that requires a company to generate profits to be successful.

    http://business-law.freeadvice.com/business-law/corporations/non_profit_corporation.htm
    http://www.entrepreneur.com/encyclopedia/term/82592.html
    http://www.usa.gov/Business/Nonprofit.shtml

Capitalism - as espoused by Thomas Jefferson and the other founders - is about creating wealth - by combining the natural abundance of the universe with human labor and intellect to create something of greater value. A house is worth more than a pile of lumber because a carpenter assembled the lumber into something of greater value. The carpenter is the wealth creator.

If an 'investor' gives the carpenter a hammer - how much of the carpenter's created wealth is the investor entitled to receive? What has the investor really contributed to the creation of wealth? If the investor rigs the game so that hammers can only be acquired from investors - has the investor subverted the intent of American capitalism?

Investors only make money by redistributing wealth created by the work of others. Wealth cannot be created without work - capital does not create wealth. A business with all the capital it could need - will fail - if there is no one to invest work into the business ...

Capitalism needs WORKERS more than it needs investors. It is possible to walk naked into the wilderness and create wealth for yourself. Capitalism rewards WORK - not risk.

Investors are quite simply pirates - financial parasites - that use profit models to redistribute wealth created by someone else's work. Our 'free enterprise' - 'free market' - system of justifying redistribution of wealth is un-American ...

@concernedone -- Did you look at any of those Republican House bills? This is Eric Cantor's web site that lists some of the Republican 'accomplishments' during 2011.

    http://majorityleader.gov/JobsTracker/

Here is a description of some of those bills -

•H.R. 872 - Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act of 2011 - prohibits states from requiring permits to discharge pesticides into waterways.

•H.R. 910 - Energy Tax Prevention Act of 2011 - prohibits EPA from regulating greenhouse gases.

•H.R. 2587 - prohibits the NLRB from ordering an employer to close, relocate, or transfer employment under any circumstances. (Moot - Boeing and the union settled - without this legislation.)

•H.R. 1315 - Consumer Financial Protection Safety and Soundness Improvement Act of 2011 - amends sec. 1023 of the Frank-Dodd Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act to create a five member commission to perform the duties of the act.

•H.R. 1230 - Restarting American Offshore Leasing Now Act - To require the Secretary of the Interior to conduct certain offshore oil and gas lease sales, and for other purposes. Focused on leases in the Gulf of Mexico and offshore Virginia. DOD has voiced opposition to the Virginia leases.

•H.R. 1229 - Putting the Gulf of Mexico Back to Work Act - To amend the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to facilitate the safe and timely production of American energy resources from the Gulf of Mexico, to require the Secretary of the Interior to conduct certain offshore oil and gas lease sales, and for other purposes.

•H.R. 1231 - Reversing President Obama’s Offshore Moratorium Act - To amend the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to require that each 5-year offshore oil and gas leasing program offer leasing in the areas with the most prospective oil and gas resources, to establish a domestic oil and natural gas production goal, and for other purposes.

•H.R. 2021 - The Jobs and Energy Permitting Act of 2011 - To amend the Clean Air Act regarding air pollution from Outer Continental Shelf activities.

•H.R. 1938 - North American-Made Energy Security Act - To direct the President to expedite the consideration and approval of the construction and operation of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, and for other purposes.

All the 'oil in the Gulf' bills are moot because Dept. of Interior has begun auctioning leases again - without any Republican legislation. The Republican House apparently was attempting to take credit for actions that were scheduled to happen anyway.

Of course this list does not contain some of the major accomplishments of the Republican House -

    - threatened government shutdown
    - threatened default on sovereign debt
    - obstruction of tax cuts
    - failure to find a path to responsible budget cuts
    - authorization of deficit spending

Any Republican trying to run on a list of 'accomplishments' will have a difficult time. That is why the Republican Presidential candidates are avoiding any discussion of government policy. There is no foundation upon which to build a Republican argument - so - the only thing left is to attack each other's character and past records - and - construct a narrative of 'doom, gloom, and failure' such as Mitch Daniels presented.

(ir)rational bent - Obama did not have a super majority during the first two years of his presidency. In 2009 there were 58 dems, in 2010 there were 57. You need 60 for a super majority, otherwise you get filibustered. It's a little too soon to be attempting to re-write that particular bit of history by lying about this, even for you.

Ok I will keep it simple.

@ Concernedome are you delusional. Obama didn't initiate activities resulting in dividing this country. I had the great fortune to be in Washington during a teaparty rally back in August 2009. Thus, I went to personally witness if what I heard about them was true. The ugly, nasty, disgusting lanuage used in speeches and on signs I witness against the President and the democratic congress were unimaginable. I mean I would understand if there were just a few fringe hate mongers but by what I witnessed over half fit this category. I think it was the Black democratic Senator from SC that came on to the capitol steps; they began to call him ever kind of N-word in the book. Signs with Obama as Hitler or a Monkey all over the place were again unimaginable. The GOP congressmen who spoke at the rally did not do anything to address their behavior, but more or less seemed to egg them on. Let's no forget the ridiculous rhetoric from the likes of Rush Limbaugh.

@concernerdone, let's not forget the inaugural attack on labor by the government with the firing of the air traffic controllers and the harboring of government crooks like Oliver North. No, divisiveness will be measured against Ronald Reagan and at this point Obama is about a Reagan-90.

Nerm L - what were the dates on those bills Gulf you talk about. Yes, the fed is NOW acting on some of the items, but the legislation saw passed through the house a long time ago...

The cup is not only half full, it is also half empty. The entire story must be told! And what the heck are you talking about "the Republican Presidential candidates are avoiding any discussion of government policy"? Have you watched the 20 or so debates held so far. Who did not answer a direct question? Perry screwed up a couple times, but he isn't around any more... Which of the final 4 avoided a question of government by a moderator? If you say it 100 more times, it will become truth... Also

    - threatened government shutdown
    - threatened default on sovereign debt
    - obstruction of tax cuts
    - failure to find a path to responsible budget cuts
    - authorization of deficit spending

Two things here... The Tea Party IS resopnsible for holding back some common sense measures. But the rest of the right believes YOU are wrong and have this country moving in the wrong direction. YOUR president says it has to be his way or no way. He is forced into it by the larger "party" directives. The president is a puppet - a front man for the party. It has been true nearly 100% of my life - regardless of party! If you've been around very long, you will have to admit it to be true!!!

There is a story floating around MSNBC today about the austerity measures and their affect on the people of Greece. I just talked with a man today whose son lived in Greece for 7 years. He married a girl from Greece. 5 years ago they sold all they had and moved back to the United States. They said they could see the obvious signs of failure on the wall. He said the thing that scares the hell out of them today is they are seeing the exact same things in our government that has led to the situation in Greece.

There are a few things you left off your list:

    -Guantanimo Bay is still open.

-Obama has extended the Bush era tax cuts.

-Obama has extended the Patriot Act.

-A real accomplishment - Obama did pull our troops out of Iraq as negotiated between the new Iraqi government and George Bush!

Finally, your assertion that I got my info from Eric Cantor's web page is false. I just Googled it and at least a dozen stories came up from various sources. Those dozen were on the first search page, I didn't hit the "next" button to see how many more were out there.

Peace Man - I'm out of here!

Pamela - Gotta reply, then I have to go... I work with many people in my office. Two of them are Tea party enthusiasts. They were at that same rally. I can't say because I wasn't there, but I just talked to one of them and he says you are a liar. He said nothing like that went on. He said their whole point was to show civility, and (for the two of them anyway) let their Christian light shine while standing in opposition to the direction of politics.

Not my words, but those of someone else who was at the rally...

Don't you guys get it??? Your party is as much to blame as anyone. We all fight each other instead of the true enemy. Someone said yesterday - and I know I will butcher it - 'I have seen the enemy, and the enemy is us'.

Folks, you and I have to get together and promote unity. You and I have to find enough common ground to get along. Will neither side be happy until bullets start flying? How far do you want to push before you will consider the other side of the aisle? We don't have to hug at the end of the day, but we have to find a way to cooperate or we are screwed!

Oh yeah! We really want the party of No to rescue us - since they are mostly to blame for the mess we are in now. Both parties are to blame but more the GOP since they have blocked each and every effort to make things better. Pretty sure we don't want any more "help" from the GOP or the country will completely fail!

@concernedone, funny how your concern centers around liberals compromising and reaching across the aisle to work with conservatives. Yet it is the conservatives who continue to divide the country along lines of religion, sexual orientation, moral beliefs relative to science, medicine and criminal justice, income, race and nationality. I'm sorry, but these days it is uniquely progressive to desire to include everyone and it is the conservative who wants all others to be like them or be excluded. If you want compromise then get real about it or get ready for the backlash.

Concernedome, do you actually think that a teaparty member will confess to participating in such vulgar behavior to a co-worker? It was a healthcare reform rally. I remember it well as I met one reasonable man and we sat on a half wall at the Indian Museum, and I used my blackberry to go to OPM.gov to show him the salaries of federal executives because he said they make more money than healthcare executives--go figure. Just one of the many outliars rwnuts believe. Just googled to find an article about the rally but they didnt go back that far, but in the meantime I found articles when these nuts spit on a black congressman plus called him a @!$%# in March 2010. The only reference to the 8/2009 rally I could find is It appears that when these idiot realized they were not going to get what they wanted or kill the bill so they became nastier by March 2010 and even spit on a congressman as well as call hin a @!$%#.

How Obama said no to a "perfectly safe pipeline" - so it's safe just cuz you guys say so? That makes me feel better, let's go for it!

"No feature of the Obama Presidency has been sadder than its constant efforts to divide us, to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others." WOW - so if Obama's message of working together is divisive, what do you call what the Republicans have been doing?

Oh Concernedom, I forgot to mention that it is obvious you don't know what austerity measures mean. Stop listening to talk radio and read. Austerity measures implemented by European countries is exactly what the GOP proposed, cutting government costs and in some cases reducing taxes. As the Greek lady you spoke to indicated, when these measures were implemented things got drastically worse. The UK who led the pac is also having contractions in GDP growth and an increase in unemployment. Looks like they are headed to a double dipped recession. The US on the other hand who implemented a stimulus gdp has been growing for over two years and currently at the same rate that it was during most of the Bush admin. Also, there are constant decreases in unemployment. Now those dummies in Europe are talking about stimulus. Unfortunately, their mistakes are pulling down the rest of the world's economy, and I think we would have had better growth if they would have taken our recommendation to implement a stimulus. Guess Obama knew what he was doing after all LOL. Boy you got to love it, the proof is in the pudding. LMAO

Dummy didnt realize that the comments from the Greek woman he quoted would support Obama's handling of the economy. They are just parrots repeating what they hear and dont have a clue.

Actually Daniels is somewhat correct. Since President Obama was elected the republicans have been trying with all their might to put the President, the poor and middle class in their graves. These purveyors of the political macabre have spent their terms digging and refilling graves under the direction of Grover Norquist, the Koch brothers and Rupert Murdock, until they are aware only of nether-world existence. Fact, republicans have become quite expert and proponets of all things nethermost. Daniels looked and sounded like a goddamn gloomy ghoul!

The problem is that congress spends money to get re-elected. People vote for the representative that will get them some of that money.

The solution is to limit what congress can spend on.

All right, Daniels. You say that Obama is dividing America, even though he has tried to COMPROMISE with half-ass idiots like you. I got a plan to HELP America. And I hope people will find it and send it to their leaders.

                1. Deficit Reduction Package over 12 years:

                • Cut defense by $800 billion. Prioritize spending to match the investments made by the Chinese, install cyber-defense system to defend American projects and info. Close 144 bases (mostly in Europe and US)= $40 billion a year. Invest more in drones. Cap aircraft carriers at 13. Target waste in private contracting.
                • $1.2 trillion in savings from entitlement reform: Raise cap to 90% of taxable income; preserve tax on $3.5 million estate; progressive indexing; adjust COLA, etc.
                • Remove Bush tax cuts except $1.2 trillion for middle/lower class earners= $3.2-3.6 trillion savings. Repeal all of Bush tax cuts in 2015 but save deductions for marriage, house, children, etc.
                • Gradually increase taxes on the highest income bracket to 45.4% from 39.6% after repeal of Bush tax cuts=$900 billion.
                • Increase capital gains tax to 21%.
                • Reform tax code, eliminate loopholes and most tax expenditures. Add a value-added tax at about 4-5% as long as it won't stifle growth or overburden taxpayers. If it does stifle growth, wait until economy (unemployment rate, stock market data, etc) is up to pre-recession levels and then enact it.
                • Lower corporate tax rate to competitive 17.5% BUT no loopholes and ALL corporations pay 17.5%. NO TAX REFUNDS for corporations.
                • Eliminate $100 billion in subsidies for oil/gas, ethanol, and farms. Use $60 billion for deficit and the rest for incentives in clean energy.
                • Reform government departments, agencies. Place Dept. of Homeland Security under Defense Department.
                • Cut $2.1 trillion from the rest of discretionary spending EXCEPT NASA and Education.
                • Wealth tax to discourage hoarding of money.
                • Total savings=~$9 trillion over 12 years including lower interest.

                2. Economic Plan (paid for by a 4% surtax on people who make over $1 million).

                • $60 billion in infrastructure bank.
                • $40 billion in incentives for clean energy, plus increases in subsidies and new projects to construct solar power plants, wind farms, nuclear power plants, hydroelectric dams, etc.
                • 100% duty on goods from nations that manipulate trade markets (China, Russia, etc).
                • $50 billion for innovation.
                • Education reform along lines of Obey Porter model. Also investing into Head Start education program. Merit-based pay, $2,000 per student, and revamp of building conditions and technology. Follow example of nations beating us with new teaching techniques.
                • Immigration reform. Sponsor immigration of those excelling in science, math, technology, etc and offer them government jobs if they can't get them in the private sector.
                • $200 billion in plan to rebuild America using underemployed and unemployed people.
                • $50 billion to upgrade U.S. airports, refineries, oil rigs, and harbors.
                • Help housing market by speeding up foreclosure time, destroying old houses for new projects, writing off underwater mortgages, and having the feds and state and local govts buy houses and teaming up with private sector to rent out homes and split profits until market fully recovers (nice revenue stream; less foreclosures; win-win).
                • Reinstate Glass-Steagall Act.
                • Reform Wall Street.
                • Full employment policies.
                • Living wages and higher minimum wage after recovery.
                • Low-cost higher education.
                • Employee Ownership Programs.
                • Creation of a Pacific trade zone area open to all nations THAT WILL OBEY TRADE LAWS. China will not be initially invited until they cooperate with the WTO on trade fraud.
                • Decrease inequality by promoting education, strong safety nets for the unemployed, and pro-growth policies from both the left AND the right, including a more progressive tax structure.
                • $50 billion for domestic energy exploration.
                • $40 billion for Department of Tourism and 200,000 embassy workers to speed up time to get a visa to visit the US. Increase tourism, create jobs, and allow people to spend money in America.
                • Broad national regulatory overview: cut wasteful regulations in some sectors (energy infrastructure, etc) and install new regulations in others (financial markets, housing, etc).
                • New regulation: all companies must increase their employees salaries at least once every two to five years and must index for inflation (allows middle and lower class income to increase steadily).
                • Follow People's Budget economic rebooting package and tax reform onhttp://grijalva.house.gov/uploads/The_CPC_FY2012_Budget.pdf
                • Post Office reform. Eliminate health benefit payment over 75 years; buyout 100,000 employees; invest in online shipping and deliveries; eliminate all transfers of money to federal accounts until Post Office balance sheet is balanced; increase cost of stamps by $.03; temporary 2% pay cut and 15% decrease in administrative salaries.
                • Tax all companies on money made on American market. Give deductions for companies for every dollar they spend hiring American workers who earn a salary/benefits of under $250,000 or purchasing Made in America supplies, goods, parts, materials, etc.
                • Remove any breaks for companies that offshore jobs, and offer a large tax credit for every wave insourced jobs from companies based on number of jobs insourced (around $5,000-8,000 per head).

                3. Reform Government.

                • Government funded campaigns and zero-contributions of private donors (unions, companies, etc) but welcome for individual donations under $200.
                • Elimination of Super PACs and reject corporate/union person-hood.
                • Proportional representation.
                • Filibuster reform. Limit amount per year and make certain bills immune.
                • Cut congressional budgets by 20% and decrease pay for officials from $170,000+ to $80,000.
                • Constitutional amendment keeping lobbyists away from Capitol Hill when in session.
                • NO VACATIONS OR PAY when deadlock is in government.
                • Congress can no longer vote to increase their own pay. That occurs automatically when national standard of living rises.

I know it's a bit long but that is it. Please comment on it and send your suggestions.

Now for division of this Nation, you need to go back and look at the Historic 2000 Presidential Election and the Florida Voting Recount, that is where this country divided!! 50/50, Gore won the popular vote across the country and lost Florida by strong arm tactics from High Level Republican Pressure and and inept Cahterine Harris.

Obama has done nothing to further divide a country WAR TORN under Bush, not one thing, only thing the Republican Party has done from the onset has been block and vote anything the president pushed for and even Congressmen have come out into the press back in 2009 and said so.....Google the Facts!

Its interesting that so many republicans claim that Obama has caused all the problems this country is facing..yet..Bush, a republican got most of this mess started....and not one republican tried to stop him from making the blunders he made....no, they all blame Obama for them all. Would like to know just what bills have passed by the republicans that might have helped this nation in any way ? From what I have read...they voted down everything, even when some of the items were their ideas to begin with. This has all been just to beat Obama this time round...never mind the state of the nation they helped to bring about. What we really need is a full house cleaning...get rid of them all...every politican in washington that is in either house of congress.

The GOP is a party looking for a constituency to prop up their real constituency of about 3 million American out of 300 million. They've co-opted just about every fringe group there is, and it turns out, they new kids coming up aren't as stupid as they hoped NCLB would make them. The desperate flailing is almost comical.

The state of the nation is, "grave," but the GOP are here to rescue it. Does anyone's memory go back 5 years? GOP policies put the US in the toilet in the first place, and GOP obstructionism has been holding the lid down so we can't climb out, but even that can't keep us totally out. Boener looked like he was about to pass out when the President pointed out that 3 million of the 4 million jobs lost on his watch before the stimulus kicked in have come back. The stimulus is long gone, but the jobs are still slowly coming back. How much faster would they come back if the GOP would just sh!t or get off the pot?

Anyone's memory stretch back 30 years? Mine does. I remember R.R. promising to lower taxes. He did. The economy got worse. He did finally get the point, and raised taxes 12 times. Low and behold, it recovered. Reaganomics was a joke from day one, and we are still paying for some of it's funnier parts.

The GOP to the rescue. That's like calling the robber back to protect the store after he's knocked the glass out of the door.

                    un·ion/ˈyunyən

                    noun

                    1. the act of uniting two or more things.
                    2. the state of being united.
                    3. something formed by uniting two or more things; combination.
                    4. a number of persons, states, etc., joined or associated together for some common purpose: student union; credit union.
                    5. a group of states or nations united into one political body, as that of the American colonies at the time of the revolution, that of England and Scotland in 1707, or that of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801.

                    (definition courtesy of dictionary.com"

First off, my comment probably has less to do about the State Of The Union "speeches" last night and more with the way I see the actual state of the "Union". My first recollections of the State of The Union addresses was how the family waited around a small screen black and white television to see the President actually speak to the nation in what seemed to be a one on one basis. No matter how tough things were at the time, he always seemed to be able easy our minds and make us allproud to be an American. I read alot of news coverage on-line via electronic news media from multiple sources, so I am given the opportunity to also read a variety of comments left by other readers. Hence, the definition above.

I hardly think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that I have seen quite a bit of divisiveness in this country on a first hand basis. But after reading the comments left on multiple sites, the last thing in the world any Presidential address should be called is an address to "The Union". Disagreeing about what ever political party is "in power" is one thing, but when something that changes (or does it really???) every 2 -4 year cycle whips people into such an irrational frenzy, is the address really to OUR Union? It is a horrible thing to say, but the last time this country was even close to being "united", was after the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. Maybe the reason there have been no other major attacks against our Great Nation is that terrorists don't feel attacks are neccessary.

They probably read the same comments I do.

Daniels painted a dark portrait of the nation's fiscal and economic situation, blaming Obama for the struggling economy, while promoting the Republican agenda as the best alternative to Obama and Democrats

...As if we were expecting those people to say anything positive. Republicans can't listen to anybody but themselves. They are really the party of NO. Their agenda took us right down the cliff for 8 years. When are they going to accept that fact? They want to undo everything positive that President Obama has done.

Blaming the cesspool that we are in now is because of WARS. They want to take us right back to that path folks...and take away any protection nets for the old and disabled. They continue telling us they plan to run government like a "business" Isn't it the reason that most of us don't have decent health care? Is Congress run like a business? If Congress was run like a business, all those PARASITES would be FIRED by now.

Other than a few glitzy enclaves around Indianapolis, where his CEO friends live, the entire state's infrastrucure is crumbling, and the school system is being dismantled.

My tax dollars are being spent to make India-NO-place look good for the Super Bowl, while the rest of the State struggles to keep the lights on- he is filth.

The party of NO is at it again,

If it’s not threatening to obstruct unemployment benefits for people out of work caused by their economic policies over the eight years of the Bush debacle, it was their opposition to the Economic Recovery Act, or Health Insurance Reform, or Cash for Clunkers or the Credit Card Holders Bill of Rights than it’s their desire to destroy Social Security, or their lying about WMD, or death panels all the while giving their rich, corporate, puppet masters obscene tax breaks. By the time the GOPee gets done there will be a rich 1% and the middle class will look like refugees in a third world country.

London, i am also a hoosier and watched Daniels take a state in deficit in the red and put it fiscally back in theblack so i imagine you just don't like him for whatever reason, most likely politics.

All you party of no people, do you realize the senate hasn't passed a budget in over a 1000 days. Well over a dozen bills now sit on Reid's desk with ZERO action. Just tabled them. Not brought up for discussion, ammendments (which they could add whatever they want with majority) or for any votes. This includes the time frame when the super majority existed, so you can't rail "republican obstructionism".

And the people that yell tax rates ...... if we would DOUBLE the tax rates of everyone we would still be close to a $500 BILLION deficit. You could liquidate every cent of every Billionaire in this country (Gates, Buffett etc.) and you still cuoldn't close the 1.5 Trillion deficit BO is spending every year. It amazes me people can't see (or refuse to admit for political reasons????) that the biggest problem we have is a government that is waaaaay out of control with spending.

Also ....going back to the 39.6 rate would bring in maybe $40 Billion. Then instead of a 1.5 Trillion deficit we have a 1.46 Trillion deficit. Then what?

A lot of tired and worn out talk here. There are way too many people, on both sides of the aisle, looking to government as the solution for all of our problems. Frankly, the government is the main source of most of our problems. Look at the loss and waste over the last 50 years on war. Other than possibly the first Gulf War, the last necessary war was WW II. We spent trillions on wars - and BOTH parties were responsible. We have spent and committed untold trillions to the Social Security ponzi scheme - thank you FDR - that is doomed to fail. Medicare, Medicaid - more trillions. All of the unneccessary and redundant federal agencies - more trillions. Welfare, food stamps - more trillions. What has any of this solved? Nothing. Government cannot solve our problems. We can solve our problems. Our federal government should be cut in half immediately and all the wasted tax dollars should be returned to us and used to at least partially fund Social Security so that the promises that were made can be kept. Then that worthless ponzi scheme should be replaced. I for one am tired of the damn government trying to "help" me and "take care of me". I can do that just fine on my own. Unfortunately, it seems that many of you don't share that view. In one way or another you want these clowns in Washington to do that for you. That's a sad situation for a nation that was built on individual resourcefullness.

BigATC - I am also a Hoosier who agrees with you. London is definitely in the minority, but has a valid opinion and is entitled to it. One of the great parts of the United States.

One point I don't agree with was your point of "dozens" of bills that died in the senate. There have actually been HUNDREDS. The Republican congress has been quite busy. Hundreds of bills passed through to the senate, but weren't even allowed to move to committee because the speaker gets to decide which bills to consider. Harry Reid IS the great obstructionist - doing the will of his party (as per Obama). Nothing gets done, then these same bull crap artists say the Republicans are the party of NO. They deny action, then blame the other guy................???????????

One other point about taxes. I personally have no problem with raising some taxes - like capital gains, back to where they were once before. They were temporarily cut, but never returned to close to where they were. This is not a tax increase on the rich, it is a return to where they were once before. This would create SIGNIFICANT revenue.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was the Republican President who presided over the construction of the Interstate Highway system that virtually all Americans use.

It is a classic example of what government can and should do.

Mitch Daniels is a Republican governor who wanted to sell the Interstate Highways to foreign companies, so that for the rest of time, people traveling in Indiana could pay a user 'tax' to a foreign country. He wanted to give the proceeds of the sale to his wealthy benefaxctors in the form of "tax cuts". No taxes on rich people today, in exchange for generations of Americans paying taxes to foreign countries for decades and perhaps centuries to come. Selling what the American taxpayer has already paid for, in order to benefit a wealthy few.

It is a classic example of boneheaded mismanagement, and a sign of how low the GOP has sunk.

Concernedone - be careful with agreeing to tax increases. They never stop and they keep going up. Since you are from Indiana, you should understand this. Remember the "temporary" wheel tax that was put in place about 30 years ago to fund road construction? It's still there. Remember the tax restructuring in 2002 when they reduced property taxes but increased sales tax from 5% to 6%? Then, four years later they realized that didnt' fix it either and had to raise it to 7%? It will soon go to 8% OR they will start raising income taxes or property taxes again. The government is like a black hole that sucks its people dry. Regarding capital gains - if they are going to tax them as ordinary income, then they should index the cost basis so you don't pay tax on inflationary gains. That's a big part of why the rate is lower. I don't have an issue with the Private Equity people paying ordinary tax on their gains, but that's an immaterial drop in the bucket. Government spending has to be cut drastically and immediately or we need only look to Europe for our future.

At one time, the GOP was the party of fiscal responsiblity.

                    No more!

In 2001, handed a federal budget surplus lare enough to have paid off the entire national debt by now, Republican politicians DELIBERATELY cut revenues, transfering over one MILLION DOLLARS to EVERY very wealthy family in America over the course of every eight years, boosted spending, and increased the federal bureaucracy.

In the process, they not only FAILED to pay off the national debt, they more than DOUBLED it, to the extent that nowadays, 25% out of every tax dollar goes to finance the interest! All so rich fat cats like Mitt Romney could get millions of dollars at the expense of future generations of Americans.

Concernedone .... cap gains started a hundred years ago at 7%. Then spent quite a while at 12.5% The higher rates, i.e. 28%, over history is on the high end and not a majority of years.

Now take a look back 30 years at the last 4 changes to cap gains.

In '81 rates went from 28 to 20%. Revenue increased 4 fold until '86.

In 87 it was increased from 20% to 28%. More revenue? NO! Cap gains revenue was LOWER for the next 10 years than revenue taken in in 1986 before increase.

In 97 rates went from 28% back to 20%. Yes there was a Clinton tax cut nobody ever mentions. Revenues only then surpassed 1986 revenues.

In 2003 rates went from 20% to 15%. Revenues again took off. I believe doubled in 3 years.

In all 4 cases CBO estimated increased revenue when rates increased and estimated lower revenue when rates were lowered. In all 4 cases they were wrong. Because they use current static numbers, as mandated, and don't take into account behavior.

Numbers available at bureau of labor statistics.

Obama hit it out of the park and Mitch Daniels didn't help his party by portraying the state of America and the policies of the GOP as he did.

The distinctions couldn't be more clear as we go into the 2012 election cycle.

Obama and the Democrats: Cheerful / Optimistic / Forward thinking (our best days are ahead of us) / Representing the middle class and the 99%

The GOP: Angry / Pessimistic / Backward thinking (our best days are behind us) / Rpresenting the wealthy, corporations, and the 1%

Do you accept the facts that the economy, energy independence, crime, immigration crossings, and regulations have all seen significant improvements under Obama compared to the Bush years or do you refuse to accept reality because Talk Radio spins everything as a disaster that can only be corrected by removing Obama and believe that it's even possible to go backwards in time?

If Romney is the nominee, then it's Obama for the middle class and 99% versus Romney for the corporations and the 1%.

If Gingrich is the nominee, then it's Obama with a great America and a vision for a better future competing with other countries with new technology versus Gingrich under an America in its worst state and claiming we can somehow return to the nostalgic and better past while other countries move forward with the innovations.

It sure looks like the odds are heavily favoring the Democrats in the White House for the next term regardless of who wins the GOP primaries.

@wakeupamerica, where to begin: Government has its flaws but without it, millions of retirees would not make enough to live (thank you FDR), millions would have NO medical care, millions would not have an education, internet (countless other technologies) or jobs (who is our biggest employer?), you would not have a justice system, an interstate, on and on and on. Somethings, like health and national defense, cannot be left to the profit first focus of Capitalism, hence government, with the economies of scale, must take the lead.

                    At large:

A solution: public financing of campaigns thereby eliminating special interests (business, parties, et al) and opening the process up to the general public who can ill afford to run for office. All of this pandering to parties (these are trained debaters, aka Lawyers, who will try to convince you it is night while the Sun shines over their shoudler) is because they are a large source of campaign dollars. Remove the nipple and party (special interest) allegiance wanes and work can get done, like tax code and torte reform, etc, etc.

Reality check, Democracy is a frustrating process to watch. By its nature it is inefficient and difficult to get anything done, barring an emergency, which includes keeping the lunatic fringe (think Nazi Germany) out of power.

Lastly, we need to spend money to keep the economy moving. As the economy improves, revenues do as well and the deficit goes down (check your history, been there, done that).

                    Take care!

Commonsense ..... you forgot to mention the recession, dot com bubble, and 9/11 that happened in Bush's first year. Think any of that effected the economy? The surplus was barely a surplus and no way would have paid off the 5 Trillion deficit at the time.

Starting in 2004 the deficits went yearly from th 400's, to 300's to 200's to 155Billion in 2007 and were headed in the right direction. Until the real estate bubble popped startin 2007.

I will agree with you the 2000's spent too much for me. If you, like myself, rail against govt spending why do you not mention the current trillion and a half yearly deficit spending? BO has added as much debt in 3 years as the previous 8 years.

He is an angry man who knows the only way to succeed is to divide and conquer. He talks a good game about helping the middle class, but what has he done? How does he help them? The republicans are no better. They are parading a bunch of un-electible bozos before us, virtually guaranteeing four more years of hostility in Washington. The best thing this county could do is to vote out EVERY member of Congress that's been office for more than 10 years. We need to clean house on both sides of the aisle.

BTW, manufacturing is coming back to the U.S. in a big way. Talk to some engineers. I have several friends who are in various levels of engineering (mechanical, electrical, industrial, etc...).

They are all in real demand right now for retooling and setting up for domestic manufacturing. New college graduates with engineering degrees are getting very good starting offers all across the country. The new factories will be more high tech than the old ones and will require more workers with associate degrees instead of just high school diplomas so re-education at the Community College level may be a necessary investment both from private and public sources, but the jobs and decent pay are coming. This doesn't happen overnight and nothing was happening at all before the current administration came in, but those seeds are now starting to show results.

It wasn't because of 9/11, it was because of willful mismanagemet by a Republican Congress, abetted by a weak Executive who basically went along with any givwe away program for rich people that the idiots in Congress came up with.

The stock market was far worse when Bush left office than it was the day he was sworn in.

But Mitt Romney's kids have $100 million they did nothing to earn, and they haven't paid one PENNY in taxes on it. So I guess it's all okay. It's not the United States of America after all, it's the Disunited States Belonging to Rich Guys While the Rest of us Work and Pay Taxes.

Working TOGETHER, Democrats and Republicans crafted a SURPLUS.

                    Working ALONE, Republicans DESTROYED it.

The GOP and their Retards have become the Party for the 1%, Newt said at the "DEBATE" that the 1% should pay 0% in taxes, when the overwhelming majority of Americans ( 86% ) want the 1% to pay more. This prompts me to wonder what makes the GOP Tea ReTards tick ????????

Mike you are correct. Manufacture and design companies here can't fill engineering jobs in that industry. Good area if someone is starting a career. I am developing a product now and guy told me the costs to manufacture in China are rising and it is no longer the advantage it used to be with the added shipping and logistics cost.

Also there are more places using the new aluminum plates instead of steel. My steel quote was mid 30 thousands and aluminum one under 7 grand.

For ten years I considered myself a republican. In 1992 I took a job with a highly respected tax preparation firm. As I calculated ( this is before the availability of computer programs) taxes for Very wealthy and very poor clients, I began to become angry.

I realized that the very wealthy received tax breaks that caused them to pay less than the most hard working middle class members of my many clients.

This was not enough to change my mind about being a republican....until George Bush took office. I watched carefully the actions he took, and the decisions he made....because by then I had taken a part-time job at night as a newsradio talk show host.

George Bush made economic decisions that would benefit his and his cronies personal pockets. This was too much. I had already seen the differences in the percentage of tax paid by all segments of society.

Today, republicans who still stand by the former presidents policies......do so....because it saves their personal pockets millions of dollars.

If you continue to support the republican party....then you must feel that you are wealthy too....but......unless you earn over a million dollars a year in captial gains ( this does not apply to workers who receive a W2 tax form from an employer) you are not. You may FEEL rich...but you are still paying more taxes than those who sit back and earn millions in accumulated intrest.

ANY americans refusal to pay a tax rate equal to the middle class...is treason in my humble opinion.

Mike-464493... If Obama represents the 99%, why is his job approval rating at 45%?

If the Occupy movement accomplished one thing, it's that it got most people asking about and noticing the growing income gap and how that is what is really killing our economy. The GOP is on the decline and this understanding of this fast growing inequality and favoring the wealthy above all else is only further increasing the distance from the GOP and the real people in America.

Since you like polls, you do know that Congress in general and both Romney and Gingrich specifically have numbers that are far worse with approval and disapproval numbers, right?

Commonsense, 9/11 had no effect on the economy? Just shutting down ALL of the aviation industry was a huge drain. Do you realize how much commerce goes through FEDEX, UPS, USPS,the Airlines and the many other business jets? How many businesses rely on airlines for packages and to move their employees where needed? Every internet business could not deliver there goods. Exports were almost nothing. No effect? Really?

I agree they could have done better in 2000's. But why do you not mention the current administration and it's horrible spending habits?

The Clinton/Gingrich combo in the 90's is the only attempt at fiscal responsibility in the last 40 or 50 years.

Social programs do more to create disunity and lack of equality. Wealthy people do not prevent YOU from going to school and getting your MBA or Ph.D. The do not prevent YOU from working hard. The economy is not a zero sum game. Because someone else is making a lot of money, doesn't mean that there is not money available to you. What do you want for? Business and dreaded corporations make millions/billions of dollars. But they also give millions of people jobs, they create products you use, and if you looked at the operating cost of running a business you would understand why they make so much money. Most of it goes back into the company. Like oil companies. They really only make an excess of around 8%... far less than coke at ~25%.

"If we put equality before liberty, we will ultimately end up with neither. If we put liberty before equality, we will get a greater degree of both." Milton Friedman

Taxprep, then you would also know that people with a lot of money had to make that money and pay taxes on that money at current rates BEFORE you get to invest it and get cap gains. The money people use for cap gains has already been taxed once.

Mike - Yes I do understand, and am disappointed with the very nature of the situation. It doesn't make me suddenly embrace the other side though. Looks like another election where I'm voting for who I hate less. :-( Huntsman was my pick as a true moderate who was employed by a Democratic and a Republican administration. He has led a state, and has the best experience in foreign relations.

I disagree with the GOP numbers on the decline. For every one on here posting, 2 new babies are born into homes that tout morals and values that were once held dear in the minds and hearts of ALL Americans. What I do believe is those calling themselves Democrat are getting off the couch and taking an interest.

                          Hey JOLLY JOKER:

President Obama: Raised the debt by 16% in 3 years in necessary spending to keep the country from falling into a great depression. To keep 1 million people working in the auto industry instead of letting an American institution collapse.

President Bush: Raised the debt 155% in 8 years on a prescription drug program not paid for, for tax cuts to the wealthiest without paying for it. Two wars that he didn't pay for.

I will never insult your grammar, but your comments indicate that you are not well read. The CEO of GE as well as his family ( parents included) are life long Republicans. As a matter of fact, his father was angered by the fact that he agreed to work with Obama. In short, he and Obama are not friends; he just wanted to bring everyone to the table to help address our economic issues. Contrary to comments posted that Obama is trying to divide the country, he attempted to bring both parties together as evidenced by nominating more opposing party political appointees in history. Three well known ones are Ray Lahood (Sec of Transportation), Huntsman ( Ambassador to China), Gates (Sec of Defense). He nominated Judd Gregg as Sec of Commerce but he withdrew.

Now, with regard to Soylandra, funding to Soylandra was authorized via the "Energy Policy Act of 2005" was authored and sponsored by a GOP congressman and passed by a GOP majority in congress. Since 2005 under that Bill many clean energy initiatives were funded, the projects funded before 2008 have had a 25% success rate meaning 75% failed. In looking at many of the projects on the Dept of Energy website, I could make the case that preferential treatment were given to many of those failed projects; but what is more, the US government lost 20% the amount of money lost by Soylandra. Thus far, Soylandra is the only clean energy project funded by the Obama administration to fail which is a 99% success rate. Such investments by the government or any other entity are going to have some rate of failure. A 99% success rate is darn good. The Dems could have made a political issue of the many project funded which failed under Bush but it appears they are not that petty and realistic. When many on the left were clamoring for hearings on Iraq and roles Bush and Chaney played in perpetrating that fraudulent war, they rose above it and attempted to focus on the more important issue, the economy

Say Ed why don't you get your history straight. Most would agree both parties have sold their souls. But clinton only moved to the center after his first two years because he lost the house & senate. The surplus and balanced budget were the work of the repubs. Give credit where credit is due. Also look at clinton's budget proposals for those years, typical tax & spend communist democrats. What we need is a third party.

So tell us Mitch.... How's selling off your State's assets to private entities working out for you? Hear it has caused an awfully lot of trouble and headaches, and has taken your state's money; had to have a "do over" on a few of those didn't you? And what is this we hear about you getting sued by IBM - a private entity - for not fulfilling your obligation when you hired them to do the state's work as a private entity... several MILLION isn't it?

Grizz, balanced budget was not work of republicans, Clinton reduced military, closed bases and other stuff with executive power. We also had higher tax code that brought more money. So what happened to BUSH, why he wasted that surplus, he had republican congress in both chambers until 2006?

You wouldn't know what is communist or socialist even if you seen it in front of you, before you call somebody that please do some research.

Seems to me that the Patriot act sounds like typical tax & spend communist actions. Republican enacted

Obama would have to be called more a Socialist Democrat than a Commie. Plus the surplus and balanced budget had more to do with the raise in the economy due to the Dot Com boom. Rather than what the Republican congress did.

The republicans like war mongering Reagan Star WARS and spending on the Cold war. Left office with a Deficit 1.4 trillion Bush SR. first Iraq war left office with a $290 Billion Dollar deficit. JR left with a 1 trillion dollar deficit.

So Tax and spend is really a tax and spend on what problem. And who is getting taxed problem. No middle class no major tax base. And with low or no taxes to offshore accounts and other assets held by the top 1% with wars enacted leads to where we are now.

Spending at home on infrastructure like after WWII pulls us out of depressions, recessions.

If the republican party really cared for the average American they would be on board. With Building up our Nation. Instead of allowing it to be bled dry by Corporations.

The republican party has no presidential candidate worthy of office period. At least not the ones running. The closest is Ron Paul and that's scary.

@GRIZ-2113758 - Tax and spend communists democrats? That's republican projection. You're just repeating conservative radio commentary. The truth of the matter is that republicans spend like drunken sailors and don't care if it's replaced. Cheney infamously said that deficits don't matter. Bush Jr. didn't raise taxes but gave huge tax breaks to the very wealthy, but Bush Sr. and Reagan raised taxes several times.

This nation is in the state it's in because of republican policies and yet it's the communists democrats fault? That is very funny.

the criticism of mitch daniels and the state of indiana under his leadership is unfounded. for the fiscal year of 2011, indiana had one of the largest surpluses among the states (approx. 1.2 billion). in a survey taken by Cheif Executive magazine, indiana was also ranked as the best state in the midwest to do business. nationally, indiana ranked a high 6th. as for the IBM lawsuit. indiana hired IBM for a 10 yr. contract to upgrade the welfare system. but after 3 yrs, there where so many complaints, that the contract was canceled and IBM was sued for the $437 millions already paid to them. IBM then counter-sued for $100 million they claimed was still owed to them. as a hoosier, i totally support indiana's decision. there is no scandal here...just good business practices. i wouldn't pay someone i hired if they did not live up to their end of a contract, so why should a state? some say the scandal is that mitch daniels didn't want to be deposed. that is a red herring, as this is standard protocol for most governorships. otherwise, a frivolous precedent would be set to have governors spending too much time in depositions and not enough time doing their jobs. whatever unfounded criticisms there are floating about in regards to indiana, seem to be propaganda put out there to make the state's future seem worse than its present. these unfounded predictions are a tactic to make the RTW proposals seem more acceptable to the indiana voters...a battle currently on-going in the indiana state house. whether RTW is beneficial or not, is another debate. but, indiana's economy is still much sounder than most other states.

Patriotism, don't you know that when a republican is President he gets all the credit, unless things go bad and the congress is democratic then they get all the blame, and if the President is Democrat and Congress is Republican then congress gets all the credit for anything good and the President gets all the blame for anything bad?(/end sarcasm) The party of no is also the party of hypocrisy.

What I find incredibly sad, nay even heart wrenching is how divided our nation has become. What happened to the united-United States of America the WHOLE WORLD watched and was in awe of? Our strength, fortitude, determination, and pride after the tragedy of 9/11? Don't tell me George W. Bush is what happened to it. That's a pat and politically motivated answer and this mess is bigger than just one man or one political party to take credit for.

Our nation has become divided in more ways than politically in the last few years. This people called Americans have drawn lines in the sand between races, genders, sexual orientations, working classes, income levels, the haves and have nots, spirituality, AND politically.

Can you not see the forest for the trees my fellow citizens? STOP, LOOK, READ, RESEARCH, and LEARN before pointing fingers at who's right and who's wrong and who's fault it all is. Stop listening to pundits telling you how and what to think and believe. Can Americans no longer think for themselves or make sound decisions without hearing it from a sound bite first? Remember, when you point a finger at someone else there are three fingers pointing back AT YOURSELF.

This entire mess my Homeland, the GREATEST NATION ON EARTH, is in didn't happen overnight. It wasn't created by just one man, one woman, or one political party. The entire blame, whose fault this whole mess is, lies with each and every adult human being who professes to LOVE the kind of freedoms ONLY this Nation can offer and give. We have taken the ways, meanings, and intentions of the great leaders who formed the foundations we stand on and mutilated, spit on, condemned, and forsaken them and discarded them like ordinary garbage on a trash heap. Americans no longer have honor, no longer are held in high esteem for the world has seen our true colors shining and they ARE NOT the red, white, and blue of citizens united for the sake of all their fellow countrymen.

Please, before you cast your vote in a primary or in the election this November, for the sake of what our forefathers held dear and of great importance stop and think about what this once great nation needs in a leader. Not what color his skin may be, not what God he does or does not worship, not how much money he has or has raised in his campaign, not how old he is, and especially NOT what political party he belongs to, Instead really, really honestly ask yourself can this man lead a nation, can this man compromise, can this man help America regain her independence and leadership in this world? Can this man honor the promises he has made to the American people? Are his promises even capable of being realistically achieved? Will this man honor the position we elect him to and the responsibility AND privilege we have given to him? Please don't just go out and vote for an ethnicity, a religion, or along a straight party line because, "That's the way we've always done it". That's how we got in this big mess to begin with. Vote with your heart, your head, AND your gut.

A house divided CANNOT stand and neither can a country. Be excellent to each other! I am spent and in tears, Peace out.

Funny how when things are good its the presidents doing. When it's bad it is congress. When Clinton was in office it was the GOP in congress to keep the budget balanced. When Bush was in, it was the Dem. in congress. Congress ok's all spending and cuts not the president.

NPR.org did a fact check on the SOTU and Daniels rebuttal...They used experts from each field...It is excellent...

Watched some of Joecup this morning, he is smoking some serious stuff to turn himself inside out with the GOP lies! cantor was there whining and brokaw was right with them!

Isn't Daniels the one who spent the Surplus with the neocons and bush cheney? No wonder people are so upset about his take on the SOTU,,,here!

Just go to NPR....it was quite enlightening...No political pundit BS...just facts from field experts!

Ed, that Clinton surplus as you call it was from legislation passed by a Republican house and Senate. Led in the house where spending bills originate by Speaker Gingrich. Those few years had the lowest SPENDING to GDP in the last 40 years. Deficits and/or surplus is much more related to spending than tax rates.

Daniels took Indiana from the Red and put it fiscally back in the Black. During the recession at that.

They should have had gov. Snyder present the rebuttal. Here in Michigan we have for the first time in many administrations a real surplus. Now if the Democrats in Detroit could get on the same page we may be able to save this city. If the city council would stop screaming "We dont want Whitey in our city" they could possibly make some progress.

Great "missed the whole damn point" post!

So you don't deny that Bush and Daniels spent the surplus given to them, you just won't give Clinton the credit for the surplus? Wow! What a great argument!

Never mind that the "Bush Debt Train" continues to roll at a $500Billion a year clip. Never mind that he started the war in Afghanistan, the war in Iraq, the huge Homeland Security, and Medicaid without funding a damn thing then cut taxes! Never mind that he handed the American people a failed economy that generated $500 Billion in less revenue a year, making Bush's total annual debt contribution somewhere near $1Trillion even AFTER HE LEFT!

Yea, but Clinton didn't have any thing to do with the surplus he handed Bush. Okay... you got us there... (not).

Patriotic American...you seem to enjoy using the word "retard," yet I doubt you would care if it offends people. Please STFU...one can argue a point intelligently, but you don't seem to have that ability. And besides, you use that moniker, yet with all your insulting ramblings, you only make it look rediculous.

Realist...I agree wholeheartedly. If we all voted for the person, and what he or she stood for, instead of the BS political parties, imagine how much better things could get.

Now if only Congress would stop all the fighting and the obvious ways they work against the President instead of with him, it could only be a good thing. I never expect everyone to agree with everything, but this looks like high school...and I really didn't care for high school.

When one person looks at someone one else with racism, bigotry, or some other form of hate, that is one person too many.

Yes, this is the greatest country in the world. And we need to stand together and help each other. Congress needs to stand together with their boss and try a lot harder to work things out instead of tryng to undermine everything he does. I'm sorry, but even I can see by what they say and do that sometimes, they disagree MORE because they don't like him instead of because it isn't something that they feel is necessary.

Everyone needs to just go vote when the time comes. In the mean time, be a little nicer to each other. If you get a chance, volunteer your time for something you believe in. Trust me, you will love it.

                                      Be safe, everyone.

Isn't this been the stated objective of the Republican Party? Haven't they wanted this administration to "fail"? Haven't they refused to work with the other side?

We ended up with the worst sitting congress that I can remember. Guess what GOP, the sky didn't fall, and things are actually getting better. Even without your help.

Of course the Republicans see the state of the union as "grave"...."dire"....."abysmal"! Those are always the words they are obliged to use whenever the sitting president in a Democrat. Nothing new there!!

However, their plan to "fix things" is to eliminate government intervention in the workplace, to eliminate government spending, to eliminate federal taxes. Just out of curiosity.....let's say the Republicans get everything they want. They win the Presidency in November (fat chance, but let's assume, okay?), they get huge super-majorities in both chambers of Congress. Now what?? They start dismantling the federal government (except for the Defense Dept, of course). All corporate laws are repealed. Businesses can now pay slave wages again, and you can forget about only working 40 hrs a week, getting paid overtime wages, etc.

What do you Republicans think is going to happen in this country once you get everything going "in the 'right' direction" again? I mean REALLY!! Do you, for one instant, think that a country with a poverty rate of 80-90% is a country on the right track?? Is that what you all really believe??

Although I think he is unlike Scott Walker, at smart enough to not go as far as walker and that governor in Ohio. He has still made this a police state. The tea baggers all say one thing and then do something else. Walker is gone, and he knows it. Ohio voters over ruled the governor there. The people have spoken and they didn't like being lied to in WI and Ohio. Snider is not stupid, he didn't go as far as Walker did. But The State talking over local citys and towns that were in trouble, is the same as the government talking over things.

When you're in a depression/recession, it takes years not A YEAR for things to turn around. My concern is that the Republicans are happy with Americans making "low-wage" jobs. Daniels is in an anti-union state, that means no benefits, no high salaries. I'd rather live in a state where the wages are a bit higher. And I am highly insulted that my boss who has admitted he's a millionaire is unhappy with Obama because his "wealth" hasn't grown, and his townhouse is underwater. PLEEZ! Give me a million $$!

Instead of being so concerned with 1% of taxpayers who may not pay enough, why don't you focus on the 49% that pay nothing. The 49% that contribute nothing to help run the country, yet seem to want all the benifits. How many jobs are those 49% creating with the money they save by not paying any tax?

Tripmaker: are you interested in taking even more money away from the little that the lowest earners have. Since 20% of those who have earned income earn less than $20,000 and the tax rate (assuming MFJ) on that is ZERO, you would have a tax on a married couple taking home less than $400 a week so that those who are taking home TWELVE TIMES as much can take home more ?

Is it any wonder most people refer to the GOP as heartless bastards only interested in giving the wealthy more money ?

                                          Tripmaker,

That slogan put out by the right just shows their current thinking about how it's OK for me but not for you. I have seen hundreds of post's by Republicans on this site stating that multi-millionaires are only legally following the laws (that by the way were lobbied by themselves to benefit them more than others not in their position of wealth) and are entitled to pay lower rates because of it. O.K., if a majority of people don't like it, they should hound their Representative to make changes. Then it would become unlawful.

However, the Republicans constantly harp on how unfair it is "other" 49% don't pay their fair share in taxes! Just like your "buddies" the wealthy, they are not breaking any law and are just as entitled to use these "loopholes" as your friends do. The only difference I can see IMO between the two, is one class is working hard everyday just to survive with the basics of life while the other class is just amassing wealth that they will never spend in their lifetime for whatever personal reason.

Now directly to my point regarding your post's. It's BS to blame those people for the fix we are in today and wrong on your part for not including the whole picture. And yet Republicans wonder why people don't believe their rethoric! By the way, we have a progressive type of taxation in this country. The more you make, the more you are suspose to pay. Fair, period. But, that has changed because money has been paid to make our current taxation to benefit those with more. I'll leave it up to you to guess who paid money to have those changes made!

If it is grave, it is because of the past 30 years of GOP politics. They have given all they could to the rich, taken over the media so that people are uneducated about the reality of the nation, used scare tactics to control the people, and fought everything the President has done to improve the economy. Despite their actions, things are turning around and there is hope again. Why would we ever want to go back to their destructive ways?

And have you seen what they are offering us as candidates? One-percenters who only toady to their wealthy supporters and have no idea what the rest are going through, thanks to their policies and unwillingness to support anything that might help intheir lust for power and money.

Jolly Joker, I live in Jersey and I don't know of many who live in poverty. The inner city is where you will find the most. The reason being ability to get food or temporary shelter, they gravitate there because Podunk Indiana doesn't have the infrastructure to deal with them. Keep in mind the the national average for the chronically unemployed is just over 5%. The unemployment rate now is at 8.2%. So 3% is the great wave of poverty your enlightening us about...right? If the Bush Tax cuts would have never been set in stone you and I would have never needed to have this discussion. remember that 5.3% are not competing for your job. You should be able to find work without a problem. You might have to relocate. But hey, thems the breaks. We still need to help that 5.3% get back on their own 2 feet and cutting planned parenthood or attacking education is a sure fired way to make sure they stay unemployed and a drag on the economy. Truth being you can't see the forest because of the trees...peace

But honestly, i had 8 years of pessimism. I think the response was the wrong edge. Although Americans Can Do Anything was pretty bad too.

The Presidents policies would ensure that people like you would pay less in taxes (you dumb cluck) but the Republicans are blocking these initiatives!

Realy? Since 2009 I have paid 29% more in taxes and took on another job to try and earn the same net I did before Obama was in office. I guess if I was a union sleeze I could work less, have cadillac health care, and pay less in taxes. But I rather stand up for myself then be a union puppet.

I work in the auto industry (non union) and the overwhelming feeling is that we do not want the union EVER. They will only be able to spend so much of the pension fund before they exhaust a large portion of it. And if they dont manage to organize the "foreign" Auto plants they will have to look some where else for the money. Watch Mr Obama carefully to see if he throws more money at them as part of his plan.

Remember the Republican Party of Ronald Reagan – the party of optimist, the party of positives, the party of Morning in America. Look what it’s become – the party of gloom and doom, a party focusing on the negative, a party seeing only the cloud rather than the silver lining, a party that has become little more that glorified, third rate reality show. Today Republican candidates are acting like spoiled children, screaming at each other, calling each other one name after another and threatening law suits against networks over campaign ads all while spreading nothing but fear and blaming everyone but except themselves for everything wrong in the universe. Meanwhile – the only message they have to offer the American citizens is I hate Obama more than my opponent hates Obama.

The State of the nation is grave?

Hasn't this been the stated objective of the Republican Party? Haven't they wanted this administration to "fail"? Haven't they refused to work with the other side?

They take a full measure of credit for the condition of this nation.

what i see with last night speech.. it was a campaign speech not a state of the union speech. Nice of Obama to foot the bill for his campaign speech to the taxpayers instead of using his campaign funds (just another example of the underhandedness of democrats)

More importantly, he sounded like he is ready to set up his kingdom, he's going to be America's first king.
He's asking for more authority and power for himself, saying it will streamline our government. Sounds like he wants to be the king. He is only interested in complete, total control of "we the people". He and his co-horts want to control every aspect of our lives, "the government know better" . Obama and his socialist co-horts (a.k.a. thugs )makes me sick.

Hmmmm....... And our healthcare system was soooo healthy as it was rated 37th, behind EVERY OTHER developed country in the world? And would this be the same economy that has shown private sector job growth for the last 22 months straight? Come on, get real!

Interesting how the GOP puts governors up for the rebuttal, instead of their leaders in Congress.

How about Ryan or Cantor? No, their approval ratings are in the teens.

McConnell? Don't even think about it.

Oh well, the country's is in Grave shape, yet the President has a 40+% approval rating.

I don't think 40% is anything to brag about. I don't know of anyone in congress on either aisle that has a decent approval rating.

Now another thing, as I read all the slanted posts here, neither party has a monopoly on good ideas to fix the economy. When the Dems say that the Repubs are obstructionists, they should take a good hard look in the mirror. When Repubs think that they can balance the budget with cuts alone, they are nuts. When Dems hold on dearly to entitlements they are just as bad.

To hear the same points over and over again from the President and congress, it is just ridiculous. Stop the talking points and get down to business

If I recall correctly, that 40% is better then the last guy had. Oh yea, that's right he was a Republican AND a Conservative. And wasn't it his administration that drove the bus that is our economy into the ditch? And the one that bailed out the Banks? The one that in it's last year in office lost millions of jobs. Then there was those two pesky wars that they didn't pay for. You know the ones. The ones that they used to run the debt up. And then blamed President Obama for.

Yep. They are just the people that this country needs to "save" it. Yep, we need them to save it alright. Just like I need someone to poke me in the eye with a sharp stick. But come to think of it, having my eye poked out with a sharp stick would hurt a lot less then what the Republicans/Conservatives did to this country for 8 years under G.W. Bush.

So sharp stick, or one of the clowns running for President on the Right. Hhhmmm. Which one to choose? Well ........

What gets me is people don't seem to know why an Entitlement is called an Entitlement, SS, Medicare, and Medicaid, is paid for my payroll deductions the person pays for those Entitlements, if you don't understand the term don't use it, you only show how stupid you truly are. And if you paid for it no one has the right to change it.

Morose, maudlin and miserable...This is the GOP. As a former Republican, if there's one thing I know it's their covert messages in their speeches. Does anyone in this country actually believe the "union" Daniels referred meant "the country"? Think again. They've got their union alright...the union of US Wealthheads Protected and Insured For Limitless Greed". Their defintiion of the word "union" is the opposite of all that Americans understand the word "union" to mean.

The GOP is so splintered as a party, they can't even admit none of them agree. But what I find most amusing is this. How exactly does allowing a sly, wily two-faced slimeball like Gingrich to become president "rescue" this country? Think about who they are putting out there for 2012. One venture capitalist and one guy who can charm the pants off any woman he chooses to snare into his little net. Now, he's got voters falling for his same line of BS.

Beware of GOP double talk. These guys are notorious experts at using words with double entendre. The only "union" they'll rescue is the one comprised of the top 1%. This is why they are labeling the status of the country as "grave". They know Main Street has ditched their voracious feeding fest in favor of moving forward. So, yes. The status of the 1%, Big Obscenely Profitable Corporations scamming our wallets is "grave"....Time to bury it and give it a headstone that reads: "Here lies Greed. A good ole boi whose end has come."

The Republicans are what got us here and is still trying to keep us UNDER water. If you look at Bush II's last year in office, it looks like a water fall from ALL the graphs. Though we are far from swimming out of this debacle that was left for President Obama to rescue, at least our heads are ABOVE water.

As a Republican, I am definitely ashamed to admit that you are absolutely correct. Of course Bush had Republican buddies in the House and Senate to help him along with his mucking of our country so he alone is not responsible. But, he was definitely the groupie leader. And now it will take our country years to undo the mess he managed in those 8 short years. But still, what amazes me is that our party is still TRYING to shift the blame for this mess on Obama who after all, has been in office a short time and not even long enough to correct what our guy screwed up those 8 long years. As they say in East Texas, "Just pure-D politics!

The difference is what the speech "reader" chooses to communicate. Who wins?

President Obama, hands down. I'm proud we have a president of this caliber.

Wow....Republicans and righties are concerned about $15 trillion which is a false number. At least 3 trillion and counting is a result of bills from Halliburton and the rest of the military industrialist chompers at the trough for Iraq. Just because Bush is no longer president, doesn't mean all unpaid bills disappear. The GOP owns that debt because their president campaigned around the country to insure that he got his Halliburton War in Iraq for Cheney.

Notice though how no rightie or Republican will end the tax subsidies in the trillions we've paid for decades to obscenelty profitable corporations? That's their hush hush BS routine. Wink, wink, nod, nod, snark around about trillions in debt but don't dare touch a dime of taxpayer funding that goes to Big Oil or Big Pharma. And since when is the GOP concerned about saving SS, Medicare or Medicaid? They were perfectly happy when the fraud was ending up in their pockets for their campaigns.

So, as long as GW was justdid things like Clinton did, you think he was fine. Frankly that is a very low bar you set for our party of espoused moral standards. GW was a silly president who had that old Frat Boy attitude and he behaved accordingly. His invasion of Iraq that got so many killed when it was Afghanistan that sent the 9-11 perps so explicitly showed his confused and hapless nature. GW was just a silly frat boy and his Presidency was loaded with that sort of juvenile behavior. He was probably the only person in the world who could of, by comparison, make Bill Clinton look like the pillar of good sense and capabilities.

" ... don't thank me I just want Amercia to be around for another 250 years or so. ... "

The only thing that you could do that would have me thanking you, would be you leaving. Then we, it might just have a chance at doing that.

Oh, and by the way. It's spelled A M E R I C A. You could at least spell it correctly.

@stone, Obama asked to increase the Debt credit limit again. In 2+ years, do you know how many Trillions he added while Bush was in for 8 years? Yup, his adding debts rate is lighting quicker than any other past presidents.

Common people? You mean people like you? No thank you! G.W. Bush was a "common" person. And look at the @!$%# that he got us into.

I don't want a President that I can have a beer with. Not another one anyway. Last "Common" person that got elected screwed things up pretty good. So, no thank you. Unlike the last guy, this presidents IQ is bigger then his shoe size. Now if we could just get the Republicans in Congress out of the way, then .....

America is not a "common" place. As the Right keeps reminding us, America, and Americans are "exceptional". Now if only the Right knew what the word ment. But that may be to much to ask.

Oh well. One can only hope.

                                                      Stone6 or just Stoned,

With a net loss of over 1 million jobs over three years where is the recovery? Not to mention all the young workers who graduated and could not find jobs and went back to school for a second degree or just gave up. You can spin words any way you want but the math still adds up to a net loss in job growth for three years. This is still the toughest economy in my lifetime (I am in my 50's) and I lived through the high times of the Regan years. I have never seen fewer job offers and so many applicants. I will lose my small business of over 20 years this month and yet people still call me on the phone for a job I don't even have.

I know who was to blame it was Dodd and Frank and the idiots who demanded the banks make loans to unqualified minorities and allowed 125% loan to value home mortgages. I used to get offers by the dozens per week for my mortgage. So lets forget the smoke and mirrors and punish the members of both parties in this next election. I also remember that is was Dodd and Frank who ignored all the warning signs of the Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae collapse. These are the same dipsticks who presided over the Savings and Loan mess in the 1980's.

                                                        #20.8 - Wed Jan 25, 2012 12:37 AM EST

How many jobs did GWB lose? Yeah, just like I thought, nothing to say.

If you are seriously claiming the Reagan years as "high times" it must be from all the cocaine that flooded the country back then. You're in your 50's and are this dumb. You should be ashamed of yourself, but you probably aren't.

As far as Fannie and Freddie go, GWB and the Republicans (think Tex Schramm, think) got rid of regulations that would have prevented the mortgage meltdown. Dodd/Frank had nothing to do with it. Oh, and don't blame unqualified minorities. There were more unqualified white people who got loans they could not afford and went belly up. Nothing like throwing in a BS racial comment because you're losing your s&^%.

Got a problem with the savings and loan fiasco, go talk to John McCain. As an added bonus, got a problem with Iran having WMDs, talk to Oliver North (I would say talk to Reagan as well, but that's not too likely).

You need to grow the hell up, get your facts straight, and get your memory checked because your recollection of past events is pathetic!

You know what? You are right. The debt has gone up more under Obama then it did under Bush. And do you know why? Because Obama had all the debt that the Bush ran up OFF the books, two unpaid for wars among other things, put ON the books. So a large chunk of the debt that you are so quick to blame Obama for, actually belongs to Bush.

But then you don't get information like that at Fox News. Or from Rush and Glen. Then again unlike the people who do, I like most of America, have to live in reality. And reality is that Bush and the Republicans screwed the pooch. And Obama is getting the blame for it. Even though it's the Republicans that are still screwing that poor pooch.

So you just keep that Conservative head of yours placed firmly up your ass. And you keep believing all the lies that they tell you about how bad Obama is. Because without the hate, the fear and the lies, the Right has nothing. Nothing at all.

And Obama is much better then the Right, and their NOTHING AT ALL.

LOL. They do talk to him. All the time. The real problem is that when they do, they actually think that he answers them. You know, kind of like God did to G.W. Bush. But hey, when you believe that fiction is fact (trickle down) then it is easy to believe that he really does answer their prayers.

I mean that Reagan answers their prayers. Because only the truly crazy actually think that God talks to them. Um, like G.W. Bush did. <heavy sigh>

Notsosure10 - No one "forced" the banks to make bad loans...not Dodd; not Frank; not the CRA. The NINJA loans, the no doc loans, the 120% value to loan, were inventions, not of the CRA, but of front line mortgage lenders, such as Countrywide, New Century Mortgage, Ameriquest, et al, most of whom were never subject to the CRA legislation. They made the loans because subprime and Alt A loans paid much higher rates of return on investment via higher interest rates to the borrower. And, because the loans could be resold and didn't have to be held by the original lender, that lender didn't care whether they they were made to reliable borrowers or not.

And, since the people they were being resold to could securitize them through repackaging, obtain a Triple AAA rating for them and sell them to investors, they didn't care either.

Read a book on the subject...or the results of the National Commission on the Causes of the Financial Crisis.

Other: Technically a recession is two successive quarters of zero or negative GDP. We are now running 1-2% growth and have been out of recession since June 2009. Unemployment is slowly going down. The stock market has recovered substantially. We are in a slow and weak recovery. That's not great, but better than being in a Depression. Spending has been due primarily to defense costs related to the wars, social security for retiring baby-boomers, medicare/medicaid costs, which have been rising with medical costs in general and due to its success in allowing people to live longer, interest on the existing debt and the stimulus package. Economists generally agree that while not as successful as originally projected, the stimulus package was instrumental in preventing things from becoming even worse.

If you fail to face these realities and vote for someone promising to "fix" the economy through a return to the very things that put us in this position - deregulation and irresponsible tax cuts, you will contribute to the end of the American middle class and probably capitalism and democracy as well.

scot, what was President Obama suppose to do after the Bush debacle years that lead to extreme unemployment, walk away and let everyone starve? You would of then asked for his head on a platter. You cry about $32,000 per person fund raisers but don't say a word about the $5 BILLION funding from a rich guy to the Gingrich campaign? BTW, scot, want to tell all the RED states that have the most welfare recipients to give up their welfare? I bet the GOP leaders of those same states would have YOUR head on a platter.

First of all, most of the people on welfare on it due to the moronic decisions of GWB and generally the Republicans in congress that changed various rules and/or gutted various regulations that led to the recession.

Second, Obama does not plan the events nor sets the price. Did you have this same concern when GWB was doing them? Do you have this concern now with the current Republican candidates for president? Didn't think you did.

How do figure that the president feels you are cursed if you're financially successful. Where has that ever been said, insinuated, implied, or been used as or in some sort of code? You're delusional and just want something to bitch about.

Let's talk facts. This country is in despair. Our Government took OUR money (taxes) and below is the outcome. Make your vote count in the next election

The Obama administration has made grants and loans to alternative energy companies, but it was embarrassed when $535 million in taxpayer money was lost in a loan to Solyndra, the California solar company that went bankrupt last September.

That would put about $1.7M in every adults pocket, living in the United States. Make your vote count in the next election.

Skipster...Not everyone walks around with a long face and is a manic depressive like some of the 40 and 50 somethings in this country. I look around every day at people this age and see them acting like they were forced into an adulthood of responsibilities they are ill-equipped to process mentally. I hate being around some in this age group because they are downright misery pits. They don't know how to enjoy life as it is. Instead they scratch and grovel like covetous morons for things they very likely will never have....billions in moolah.

Here we have a wonderful, intelligent President who not only works hard for the people of this country but always errs on the side of fairness. Can you say the say of the GOP? This President in 3 short years did what not even FDR could do in that span of time. And, President Obama refuses to become one of those morose, gloom and doom 50 somethings who can't crack a smile if their lives depend on it.

Happy Days are here again...It's time the miserables in this country stop trying to infect the rest of us with their goth attitudes. We have 20 somethings who roll up their sleeves and get out there and pitch in. All we get from some of the 40 and 50 somethings is a bunch of wailing, whining, caterwalling do nothings who like to hear their own summarily gloomy voice. Get over yourselves for Pete's sake.

lmao.......ewent thats SIR to you! Quit giving your self credit for your measly 20 years on this planet. usable knowledge is gained through experience and life lived, you have the experience of a gnats azz that just hit the windshield of a car. You need to go live in a third world country for a few years and see what respect for your elders is. Maybe a few years in the Military taking orders from some one IN that age group might help.

ewent...I am one of those 40-50 somethings, and my experience with 20 somethings is that a lot of them are lazy. NO work ethic, simply because they weren't made to work because they had school and God forbid "my child will have to work and do homework at the same time. Besides, they have that really cool trip at Spring Break!" They expect everything to be handed to them, bitch about not having what they want NOW, yet won't work for it. A lot of them still have mommy and daddy to help them out when something goes wrong, then are still surprised when something else happens and they aren't prepared to handle it alone.

Now I am not saying all 20 somethings are like this, just as I will assume you aren't saying all 40-50 somethings are like that.

Some of those 20 somethings can learn from someone like me...and yes, we are everywhere. We aren't the whiners and wailers and the ones who are so interested in making a million that we @!$%# on everyone else. And BTW, there are a lot of 20 somethings that do that.

I love my life, more so than I did when I was younger. I also voted for Obama, and I will again.

Maybe you should speak for yourself...

Let's give the President both credit for results to date as well as a real vision for the way forward together.

I'm an independent, but tend to vote Democrat or even Green, and I appreciated your response. I also expected more from the GOP rebuttal and absolutely agree they would have benefitted from some last minute editing (Isn't that the advantage of speaking second?). While Obama struck a uniting, future oriented tone, Mr. Daniel's speech sounded more divisive, more "with us or against us." His argument for voting for the republicans or at least "against" Obama was not convincing. Thanks for sharing that you're a Republican. I hope you are treated with respect by those who disagree with you politically on this site!

"while obama struck a uniting future oriented tone" Obama wants us to be united by his total and complete control of every aspect of our lives. Obama and his socialist co-horts are out for complete control. He sounded like he wants to set up his kingdom -- he asked for more authority and power so can streamline the government... give me a break... sounds like a king or dictator to me. Obama has done more to divide this nation then any other president in modern history. Democrats and Republicans have failed the American people. The mess we are in is our own making. We have allowed it to happen. We the People have sit on the sidelines and thought ... not in America, never in America.. problem is , it is happening in America. No more. "We the People" it's time to step up to the plate and take back our country, take it from the leftist, socialist crowd. They have already taken total control of our schools (a.k.a. indocrination camps)and making our kids dumber and dumber. If you want the government to control every aspect of your life, then vote for Obama... but remember, you will have to live with his control of your life. His crowd has created generational proverty with their socialist agenda, it that what you want... everybody will be on government welfare entitlement... that is what Obama wants, it that what you want.

How much more damage and debt does he have to do before you at least question his competency. God help us if he gets four more years.

President Obama was elected to fix what Bush did, you are correct about that sentence. How was he supposed to pay for the wars and medicare part D that Bush didn't pay for? It's called a Stimulus. How was President Obama to save the auto industry? It's called a Stimulus. Yes the debt is more, but if the Stimulus's weren't done, you think this country would be coming out of the precipice as it has? If you say yes, you ARE smoking something.

Cheaptrick/Bikeboy Here's something to think about before you past judgment and to clarify some of your thinking.

If you really look at the debt, The majority of it came from funding the wars of GWB. If you remember they were not even budgeted for during the 8 years Bush was in office. When Obama was sworned in he had no choice but to budget for them which is why(in my opinion) the Democratic congress didn't pass a budget for while they had power. We were already $12 trillion dollars in debt BEFORE Obama was sworn in. I know that's hard to believe but it's true, look it up.

Also as you stated Obama was elected to "fix" what Bush created. The reality is that he didn't know how "grave" the state of the economy was in until he was sworn in. In my opinion, he has done as much and ANY person could have based on the strategy of the GOP to make him a one term president including saying no to just about any and everything they saw would make this country better. He could have and SHOULD have done more I agree but we are seeing progress nonetheless, painfully slow but progress.

As for the auto industry. If you remember they filed for bankruptcy BEFORE they received bailout money AND they have since repaid all that they have borrowed. We are still waiting on the big banks to repay theirs while they continue to pay out big bonus to their CEO's and who bailed them out???? President Bush before he left office.

Lastly, as for pulling out the troops when he was elected. That would have been political suicide as he knew we could not just pack up and leave with Bin Laden still out there. You have to be smart and concise and can't act hastily when it comes to military.

Obama tried to put more regulations on gun owners stating than gun stores are selling guns to illegals, we found later it was his own administration letting the guns be sold. Over 400mil to a failing solar plant. Stimulus money targeted to unions to repay campaign contributions. Libya, millions of dollars in bombing campaigns, higher taxes on energy, fuel, further burdening the poor and under employed, still less people working than when he took office, price of everything up due to printing more money, inflation. Gitmo still open, less transparency in government. Now he wants to force business to support illegals with collage funds to give them citizenship after graduation. Continuous disregard of the Constitution, separation of powers, citizens rights.

Stop this!! Republicans caused a great deal of problems, they lost support and many of us have no trust in "the party" but to, not look at reality because your Anointed one is beyond reproach is stupidity.

You saying all the dealerships that DID close down because of the impending industry collapse was a mirage? I'm sure you'll say that 'trickle-down' economics work too, eh? Libya, NO troops doing a ground war, yep, I'd spend millions flying drones into compounds and not shed one American soldiers' life, that's a no-brainer. The burdening of the poor, and now middle class, is the end product of Bush II's doing, no matter how many years he's been out of office. How many years you expect to take to gain what we've lost in 8 years, Gunsmith? Bush II was like an oven cooking food, and you want President Obama to act like a microwave oven, and get everything back to where it was, NOW. Then you mix President Obama with Rick Perry from TX, who has illegals going to college on the public dole. Get your facts straight before making such assinine accusations and statements about something you obviously don't know. Oh, and if you had watch the Holder hearings, you would have known what the FBI was trying to do, it didn't work the way they hoped it would have, to catch the gangs dealing with the gun trade into Mexico.

If a business can't stand on it's own, it should be allowed to failed, that free market. If you bailout one business , then you should bailout all businesses.... sounds fair doesn't it.No business should be bailed out. I don't have much sympathy for the auto industry. They have continued to keep the temporary tax breaks for the rich and THEY have gutted the same Social Security and other entitlement programs and their way of "saving" them is to privatize our retirement plans and have us give weekly to Wall Street, because we all have seen how much money they made for everyone when the economy tanked at the end of the Bush presidency. We can put 30 or 40 years of savings into Wall Street and the only ones who will retire would be Wall Street, just like they always have.

None. That's right, I said none of them. Zero. Zip. Zilch and NOTA. Which is exactly how many that the House sent to the Senate that they knew that would.

Take Rep. Ryans budget as an example. It was crap. And Ryan and the Republicans knew that it was. And they knew that it wouldn't get to the floor of the Senate. That's why they passed it and sent it. To make the Democrats look bad. Good reason to pass bills. To make the other guy look bad.

Then there was the bill that passed the House that went to the Senate that said that the Senate didn't need to pass a bill sent to it from the House. That the bill would become law without the Senate passing it too. Why would Reid send something like that to the floor for a vote?

Or my personal favorite. The bill confirming that "In God we trust" is our nations motto. Huh? What? You have got to be kidding me. That bill should have gone to the floor of the Senate? Like they have nothing better to do?

When the House sends some real legislation, some serious work to the Senate, then Senator Reid will be more then willing to give it fair hearing. That is if Senator McConnell doesn't get in the way.

So until the House gets serious, which will never happen as long as the Republicans hold the House, nothing will leave Harry's desk. Because that is what it deserves.

Zero. Zip. Zilch and NOTA. Because that's what you do with crap. You scoop it up and put it in the garbage. Which is where it belongs.

                                                                      • 5 votes

When it came to reactions last night, Cronyn's (R-TX) had to be the Oscar winner. The minute the President stated that all subsidies to profitable corporations were to be under review, I thought Cronyn was going to fall on the floor. He knows what any investigations into how Big Oil spends all those tax subsides the rest of the states pay for just might uncover. And if there's anything those Big Oil Bois don't ever want, it's transparency.

If we pay for it, we have every right to know what they do with our tax dollars. Oooooweeeeee. Won't this just make Big Oil bois go apoplectic?

In other words, they want the middleclass to merge with the poor, have no rights in the workplace, to a livable wage, protection from an unsafe work environment, the ability to sue their employer if they are harmed in an unsafe workplace, or protection if disabled or laid-off.

The Republicans want the American Dream to only be available to the wealthy (the new aristocrisy) while the middleclass (the new poor) are left to toil as wage-slaves and serfs.

If President Obama doesn't get re elected we can kiss middle class America good-bye. The Republicans wanted more time to finish what Bush and Chenney started. If they had we'd ALL be in poverty. And we'd be starving and homeless too. No food stamps for the poor if they get back in the White House. Only the wealthy will be able to send their children to college. Public schools will be rotting to the ground and children will be working in sweat shops next to their parents to earn something to pay their taxes with. Anyone who believes they will not complete their plan to raise taxes on the middle class to support the tax cuts for themselves and the rest of the wealthy, wil have a rude awakening soon enough

Do they mean that protecting the 1% at the expense of the 99% is the way back? Does that means tossing the elderly, the sick, and the underprivileged under a bus is the way back. I personally like the Christian nation President Barack Obama proposed last night over the Christian nation the Party of No has been trying to shove down our throats.

I can't help but notice that the Republicans are still bad mouthing the President, for spending the past few years buried in the results of what THE Repubs got us into in the first place. Obama came into office and the economy almost fell into Depression. Repairing what he was facing the first day in office takes time to fix. If left to the devises of the Repubs, we'd be back into the very same policies that got us into this situation in the first place!!

As for who they are offering as alternatives for Obama, I find it almost laughable. Newt for example, was removed from Speaker and fined by his own party. His morals are totally in question, as is his involvement with Fannie Mae, yet he admits his errors without shame, and expects all to be forgotten because all of a sudden he has found God? What a joke!!

We need to stick with President Obama and allow him to continue to make things right. Just look at the alternatives we're being offered.

Also Investment houses like aig got bailed out by OBAMA. He did not stop the flow of money...... THERE was no reason for it. Obama signed off. Did he do anything with Freddie or Fannae Mae? Did 1 person even go to jai for the housing mess? No. Where is my check? Fraud was committed. Come on teleprompter in chief and all you progressive deadbeats. Tell Me? Did he do anything to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. NO! Ever heard of natural gas or spending money on real infrasture like tax credits to retrofit service stations that pump gas? We have high gas prices and massive foreclosures. People got mad at bush for iraqi, but the congress voted for it as the CIA lied to Bush that they had weapons that were about to take out New York. If anyone should have hatred its for the CIA and bumbler we had at its head. He should have been taken out and shot for stupidity. Bushs defecit was somewhere around 4-5 hundred billion dollars per year. Not 1.6 trillion. Thats insanity. Yeah, we were losing jobs at the end of bushes tenure, but this new guy has done nothing to restore it except run up the bill. ! thats terrible.
