President Barack Obama speaks to members of Congress during the annual State of the Union address.

With an unfinished legislative agenda from last year and with Election Day nine months from now, President Barack Obama went before a joint session of Congress Tuesday night to offer his proposals for economic growth and to draw sharp contrasts with his Republican foes.
He contended that, “The state of our Union is getting stronger. And we've come too far to turn back now. As long as I'm President, I will work with anyone in this chamber to build on this momentum. But I intend to fight obstruction with action, and I will oppose any effort to return to the very same policies that brought on this economic crisis in the first place. “
But Obama also painted a dire scenario of a nation divided into a wealthy elite and a mass of struggling Americans on the verge of insolvency.

“We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by,” Obama said. “Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules."
The president calls opportunity for all the "defining issue of our time" in his State of the Union Address.
Obama pointed to some signs of economic revival: “In the last 22 months, businesses have created more than three million jobs. Last year, they created the most jobs since 2005. American manufacturers are hiring again, creating jobs for the first time since the late 1990s. Together, we've agreed to cut the deficit by more than $2 trillion. And we've put in place new rules to hold Wall Street accountable, so a crisis like that never happens again.”
Obama was speaking against the backdrop of an improving economy which is slowly recovering from the recession of 2007-2009. Employment has shown signs of revival in recent months, with the jobless rate falling from 10 percent in October of 2009 to 8.5 percent last month.
But there were still almost one million fewer people employed last month than when Obama signed his $825 billion stimulus bill into law in February 2009.
Reviving a proposal that the Senate rejected in 2010, Obama made a vigorous pitch for changing the law to allow young illegal immigrants to become American citizens. "Hundreds of thousands of talented, hardworking students in this country," he said, "were brought here as small children, are American through and through, yet they live every day with the threat of deportation."
Obama was also using his speech Tuesday night to expand on the “fairness” theme he discussed in his Kansas speech last month.

He made the case for raising taxes on higher-income people such as legendary Omaha investor Warren Buffett who have income from capital gains and dividends.
"Tax reform should follow the Buffett rule: If you make more than $1 million a year, you should not pay less than 30 percent in taxes," the president delcared. "If you're earning a million dollars a year, you shouldn't get special tax subsidies or deductions. On the other hand, if you make under $250,000 a year, like 98 percent of American families, your taxes shouldn't go up."
He added, "You can call this class warfare all you want. But asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary in taxes? Most Americans would call that common sense."
Obama advisor David Plouffe was asked on the Today show Tuesday about GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney’s 2010 tax return which showed him paying $3 million in income taxes on $21.6 million in income.
Plouffe said, “It’s a good example … of the tax reform we need. Warren Buffett said he should not be paying less taxes – as a rate – than his secretary.”
President Obama delivers his third State of the Union address, laying out his agenda for the coming year: building the economy, bringing manufacturing back, and increasing infrastructure projects. He describes an America "where hard work pays off and responsibility is rewarded."

About 80 percent of Romney’s income came from dividends and capital gains which are taxed at 15 percent, instead of at the top rate for wage and salary income, 35 percent. With only a brief interval, capital gains have enjoyed preferential tax treatment since the 1920s.
Obama also proposed a series of new tax breaks to encourage American companies to manufacture goods in the United States and not in foreign countries. Obama proposal’s to revive American manufacturing comes after more than half a century in which manufacturing’s share of employment has been falling.
According to a Congressional Budget Office report, “the rapid growth of productivity in manufacturing has accounted for a substantial fraction of the decline in manufacturing employment and hours.” The CBO said productivity in manufacturing – more output from fewer workers – had risen by about one-third from 2000 to 2008.
Obama declared that, “I will not cede the wind or solar or battery industry to China or Germany because we refuse to make the same commitment here. We have subsidized oil companies for a century. That's long enough.”
He asked for new clean energy tax credits, but did not allude to the $535 million in taxpayer money that was lost in an Energy Department loan to Solyndra, the California solar company that went bankrupt last September.
Addressing the need for skilled workers, Obama made a proposal that was an echo of one made by President Bill Clinton in his 1996 State of the Union speech, Obama said, “I want to cut through the maze of confusing training programs, so that from now on, people...have one program, one website, and one place to go for all the information and help they need. It's time to turn our unemployment system into a reemployment system that puts people to work."
In the Republican response to Obama, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who passed up a chance to run against Obama this year, said Obama "seems to sincerely believe we can build a middle class out of government jobs paid for with borrowed dollars."
He added, “Those punished most by the wrong turns of the last three years are those unemployed or underemployed tonight, and those so discouraged that they have abandoned the search for work altogether.”
He said Republicans’ “first concern is for those waiting tonight to begin or resume the climb up life’s ladder. We do not accept that ours will ever be a nation of haves and have nots; we must always be a nation of haves and soon to haves.”
Daniels said, "The only way out of the dead end of debt into which we have driven, is a private economy that begins to grow and create jobs, real jobs, at a much faster rate than today."
Daniels assailed Obama's decision to block construction of the Keystone XL pipeline that would bring oil from Canada to refineries on the Gulf Coast: "The extremism that stifles the development of homegrown energy, or cancels a perfectly safe pipeline that would employ tens of thousands… is a pro-poverty policy."
Gov. Mitch Daniels delivers the Republican response, saying that the loyal opposition puts "patriotism and national success ahead of party or ideology" and says the GOP "program of renewal" will rebuild the American dream.
Foreign policy played a relatively small role in Obama's speech.
Addressing the threat of Iran getting nuclear weapons, Obama said, “A world that was once divided about how to deal with Iran's nuclear program now stands as one. The regime is more isolated than ever before; its leaders are faced with crippling sanctions….”
He said, “America is determined to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, and I will take no options off the table to achieve that goal. But a peaceful resolution of this issue is still possible, and far better, and if Iran changes course and meets its obligations, it can rejoin the community of nations.”
Obama began his address by celebrating military successes: “For the first time in nine years, there are no Americans fighting in Iraq. For the first time in two decades, Osama bin Laden is not a threat to this country. Most of al Qaeda's top lieutenants have been defeated. The Taliban's momentum has been broken, and some troops in Afghanistan have begun to come home.”
On Wednesday morning Obama will leave Washington to take his State of the Union message to three 2012 battleground states: Iowa, Arizona and Nevada. He carried Iowa and Nevada in 2008.
Obama was speaking Tuesday night with his signature first-term achievement – a historic overhaul of health insurance and an expansion of Medicaid – under the shadow of a pending decision by the Supreme Court.
Oral arguments before the justices on the constitutionality of the health insurance overhaul will stretch over three days in late March. The high court is considering not only whether the requirement to buy insurance is constitutional, but whether the states can be forced to expand their Medicaid programs, as the law orders them to do.
Meanwhile, Obama’s ability to get Congress pay for any new proposal he might make is boxed in by controls on spending which he signed into law last year as part of an accord with Congress to raise the limit on federal borrowing.
Any new program would likely come in the category of discretionary outlays, the part of the budget that Congress controls through annual appropriation bills. Discretionary spending amounted to $1.35 trillion in 2011, 40 percent of total outlays, according to the Congressional Budget Office. But the Budget Control Act which Obama signed last summer imposes limits on discretionary spending. For 2012 and 2013, the caps would keep spending for items other than the Afghanistan war below the 2011 spending level and would limit the growth of those appropriations to about two percent a year from 2014 to 2021, according to the CBO.
Meanwhile entitlement spending – the 40 percent of the budget that goes to Medicare for the elderly, Medicaid for the poor, and Social Security for the disabled and retired – continues to grow steadily, driven by an aging population.
Obama faces a House of Representatives with 242 Republicans – the most that any Democratic president has had to face since Harry Truman in 1947.
As Truman did in the 1948 presidential campaign, Obama is sure to lambaste the Republican majority as an obstructionist, do-nothing Congress. Republicans are returning fire by saying the House has passed more than two dozen separate job creation bills and the Democratic-controlled Senate hasn’t acted on them.

Democrats shouldn't ask for outright socialism, and republicans shouldn't ask for totalitarianism. The idea that Romney pays 15% on taxes and the poor pays 35% is just ridicilous. Romney just plays with money created by other people. People should realize that. There is no product that Romney creates. It is a casino and gambling among the rich using money created by cleaners, builders, contracts.

jerry l-1335133, Every american workers that make money. Riches get 15% because of the investments they made. Investment is taxed 10% less than some hourly worker. The Republicans set up a system where investments get taxed less. The ones that don't have investments but that actually produces something gets taxed 35%.

Presidents do not create the economy they see during their stay in the White House. They do have the opportunity to help correct any downturn. In these three years, every action you have taken hurts the economy, specifically small businesses like mine. Is there any way you can stop this Liberal support and support the economy - help the businessman, and in turn, get people back to work? Please.

So when the twin towers were attacked (the first time), the bombing in Oklahoma, and the missed attempt at killing Osama the first time which all occurred under Clinton's watch...those were his fault too? Obama is like a repair man who comes over to fix something in your house. Maybe it's your air conditioner. Maybe it's your refrigerator, or even your washing machine. After you've paid and he leaves, you find out that what he worked on still doesn't work. You call him up and tell him it's still broken and you want him to come back and fix it. When he comes back, the first thing he does when he walks through the door is give you some cheap B.S. line, then assures you not to worry -- he's got it under control and the problem will be fixed in no time. After four or five times of him leaving, and having to come back and "fix" the problem, you get frustrated and tell him to just get out -- you'll have to get somebody else who really knows what he is doing.
People, we have long since passed this point with Barack Obama ---- we need somebody who knows what he is doing.

That is completely wrong, our tax system is progressive with the highest bracket being 35% which only kicks in when you hit that level depending on your marital status and number of children, tax deductions etc. If you are married and have a household income of $200,000 you pay about 18% and that is why the lowest earners pay nothing
Occam's Razor...Name one thing that has hurt small business ! The credit crunch and financial collapse started six months before he took office. The bailout was ugly but Bush Admin was in on it and according to them would have done the exact same, there was no choice at that point. The only thing that could "hurt" small business is having to provide health insurance and that has not started yet, and when it does start there will be compensating tax writeoffs for small business. So name one policy of Obama administration that has hurt small business. Does the economy suck, yes it does, did that hapen on Obama watch, no ! If you want to say he has not done enough to turn hings around, that would be a fair complaint, but then the other party and their candidates have no announced plan to do that either. I agree that NONE of them know how to fix the economy,but to blame your problems on Obama is childish, he has not raised your taxes or expenses a dime. Heathcare may cost you some money someday, but has not cost you a dime yet, and is having healthcare such a bad thing for Americans and American workers ? I have voted republican for most of my life and did not vote for Obama, but to blame your problems and this economy on him makes no sense at all.

What has hurt small business is the uncertainty. For example in the Health bill there was a provision about 1099's being filed for almost every transaction, it was repealed but it took a year. We have to have signs printed telling our employees how they unionize, this again has been delayed a few months but created more uncertainty. I provide health insurance to my employees and we use to have a HSA program which the health care bill got rid of which has resulted in about a 25% increase over 2 years with a 20% reduction in benefits. The tax savings only come in if your average employee income for a company under 25 people is less than $50,000 so in my case that will not happen
Obama is talking about bringing manufacturing back to the US at the same time he is pushing his Asia-Pacific free trade agreement that will only send more jobs out of the US. Obama does not have a clue what he is doing. He says one thing because it is what he thinks people want to hear and then quietly does whatever he wants. He is the most divisive president in recent history and has done more to promote class warfare in this country than any president in memory. Obama has divided this country and created more hate and discontent than anyone. He is worthless as a leader. Obama tries to keep people from realizing just how miserable a job he is doing by pointing the finger at everyone else and trying to get the people to blame others for their poor situation.
Just because someone is rich and successful does not make them evil. Just because someone follows the tax code and pays only what they owe does not make them evil. Warren Buffett says that he should be paying more in taxes, but he does not voluntarily make a donation to help with the deficit, he pays what he legally owes. Does the tax code need to be fixed, yes!!! Is every rich person in America to blame for the inequities of the tax system, no!!! Should the capital gains tax rate be raised, yes. Has Obama or the democrats even introduced a bill to do so, no!!! This is because Obama does not want to anger the big money banksters that fund his campaign.
Obama is as much in the pocket of the big banks as any republican. This is clearly evident in the sweetheart settlement deal his administration is pushing to let the banks off the hook for the mortgage mess. Please do not buy into this worthless example of a president's rhetoric. He has had three years to make the changes he is now talking about and has not done it. If you really think he will follow through on any of it if he is reelected, keep dreaming. All Obama is doing is once again telling people what he thinks they want to hear so that he can get reelected. Please do not fall for it!!! Obama was bad enough during this term. Obama as president without having to worry about reelection would be a complete disaster for this country. Vote for anyone but Obama in 2012.

Alex - what was of priority in finding bin laden was not having a large contingent of personnel beating every bush to find an elusive person who has gone to ground. But to realize that since bin laden had gone to ground that the strategy had to change to find such an elusive prey. More manpower going helter skelter was more detrimental than the intelligence services maintaining focus on those individuals that could lead to discovery of the hiding place of bin laden.
Interesting that bush never told any inteligence agency to not keep on looking for bin laden, but rather to keep tracking down leads. It was during bushes watch that the courier who eventually led the way to bin ladens hide out was discovered.
Sorry that this is an inconveinient truth for what you wrongly want to assign all the credit to obama for.
FYI Capital gains taxes are the same for everyone.

JS, and just because a person doesn't have a job or is poor or doesn't pay the income tax doesn't make them lazy. And not all impoverished people CHOSE to be poor or became poor through their actions. I agree that rich people aren't intrinsically bad, but that doesn't give them the right to run risks that could destroy our economy, like they did over the past 40 years. Obama has done a lot for this nation, but I won't waste my time preaching to the biased idiots. At least give the guy credit for helping the auto industry and spurring hope in this nation. I admit that he isn't 100% great (I would rate him a little over average, mainly for the economic recovery), but give credit where credit is due.

JS , it's hard to dispute those facts but, now I believe it's a shift in direction, where an investing of time to work on helping to better the American Citizen's situation is more pertinent.
Another thing is, there are a great deal of people out here who have worked two or three times longer than many who are just currently unemployed during this recession.

Obama applaud Automakers for the success ,however Ford rise up without stimulus like GM that still owe 38 billions. We are paying to allowed unions maintain their benefits, instead go to chapter 11 and restructured GM without taxpayer money.
Obama want amnesty for illegals, knowing his vision of an immigration reform no doubt the 20 millions of illegals will stay.
Obama demand colleges to lower their Tuition , the last time he offer more hep interviewing in student lawns, tuition skyrocket.
Obama want cap and trade bill to fight Global Warming. Just a pill to make happy to his global warming base.

Looks like the GOP and their splinter groups took the day off to watch the State of the Union so they could get on to Newsvine and trot out all the ol' Rove Talking Points in the hopes that they will convince someone that putting another Repub in to office will automatically fix all of America's, and the worlds ills.
With the Republican Repair Person the phone call to fix something will go something like this.....Your number one essential service, your health, will suffer a problem which can be fixed with some minor but immediate adjustment....you will call your helpful Republican Repair Person and you will get a recording that says...."call someone who cares".
At least with Obama you get a house call.....maybe he can't fix everything in one day, one month, one year, one term, one lifetime .....but at least he is giving it shot. We know exactly what we are going to get with the Repubs....you average Americans just trying to get by hoping that the all the people will prosper and live a good healthy safe life in an environment where they can raise their children to be upstanding citizens CAN GET STUFFED. This Repub Government will be for the rich, the greedy, the borderline white collar crims, the MIC, and the rest of the clowns that see the average American as an easy target to rip off blind and get all the help they need from their slaves in Washington and state capitols around the country.

Because of it, our EXPORTS (that's the things that WE make and sell to other countries) have grown to the highest ever. Nobody says the rich are "evil" but nobody can argue the disparity between the 1% and the rest of the country. If the wealth of the job creators has doubled over the past decade and the wealth of the workers has stagnated, who makes those decisions? Must be the job creators, eh? I tried to stay away from the TV, but unfortunately still had to listen to the last 25 minutes of the speech, with the usual results......disappointment and a real dislike of a campaign speech. (I would of loved to see at least some indication that he is going to start helping America...)

Barack Obama spent more time focused on a future he envisions than he did on the reality of the present. When he says we've come too far now, he must be talking about the national debt. That's the difference between me and liberals like you. I don't make nearly that kind of money but I know a con man when I see one. As an average worker I expect to pay my fair share of taxes. In other words I don't want a free ride on the backs of the rich. Plus I also understand how economics work...therefore excessive taxation on the job creators (aka the "rich") HURTS EVERYONE. How difficult is it for you people to see that the rich members of Congress are dictating the low amounts of taxes that they have to pay through lobbyist built tax codes that they are funding. That is a complete conflict of interest. I was simply amazed last night at the contradiction of just about everything that Obama talked about in his speech. Everything that he said he had accomplished and how he will raise up businesses is a complete contradiciton of the policies that he, his administration, and the democrats have put in place during his first three year reign over the Government. He has given us more debt, yet continues to promise more spending. he gave us more regulation that are killing small business and yet he promises that if a business wants to create jobs in this country, he will ensure the Government helps them yet they overregulate, give priority to the big banks and companies, beat down small businesses with a burdensome health care and reporting bureaucracy, over taxes them to the extreme, villifies them , etc, etc. He loves to take credit for the achivement of the military (especially Seal Team six) yet he cuts the miltary budget and apologizes for the military in every case! He only see sthe miltary as a plce to consume his greenenergy projects to prp up an industry that his Adminstration has made so many bad investmetns in. He talked abotu energy independence, but denies the pipeline that would bring us more jobs and more independence becuase he has to cater to his Liberal environemtnal extreme base for votes.Come on America, can't you see through this flowers and fluff smokescreen presented only to create the illusion that he is doing great things for this country so he can get reelected (his only priority). He call for working toegther but all he did was posture and not even try to be involved in any debt or budget negotiations. HE did not even mention that and can only vilify the Republicans when he should be throwing a lightning bolt towards Harry Reid and tell him to have a vote on any budget bill so the House and Senate can negotiate the first budget in years. If Gingrich had said this, he would be vilified the next day! It is time to take this Government away from the Democrats and give it back to the Republicans who have surely learn4ed their lessons about over spending so we can get back on track and pair down this Government to only it s essential services and a more stable business friendly a=economy so everyone can have a chance at a job and not just continued Government dependence which is the focus on all Democratic thought!

We must control the debt and spending, but we cannot significantly cut the deficit without raising revenues. I say we repeal the Bush tax cuts, cut the same amount of money out of our ten-year budget, reform entitlements, and raise taxes on the upper class, and that could save us about $8 trillion over ten years without destroying our economy. I'm stinking fed up with BOTH parties, and I'll be darned if I vote for either one. Sure, Obama talks like the patron saint of the middle class. But in the end, he doesn't have the backbone to stick by his most important promises. The indefinite detention bill? Seriously? Letting the Republicans extend the Bush tax cuts just as he's trying to balance the budget? Letting the Fed guarantee up to $12.8 TRILLION in bad bank debt? Writing a provision in Obamacare that would FORCE people to buy health insurance from private, money-hungry insurers??
In reality, I see little difference between Obama and the current GOP candidates. I like the idea of having a truly progressive and fair tax system, but I don't actually trust Obama to get it done at this point. He's gone back on his word too many times when he shouldn't have. I know that politicians sometimes have to compromise to get things accomplished, but this isn't compromising; it's selling out.
That said, don't get me started on the GOP. I think they're all high on Oxycontin and wouldn't know what it means to be an average worker in this economy if a factory fell on them. Freshieee was right when he said these boneheads do not represent America. They certainly don't represent ANY of my views or values--and I consider myself a conservative!
I think I'll find myself a nice third-party candidate who not only claims to care about the shrinking middle class, but actually has a plan to save it and the b@lls to get it done. Moreover, one should never be quick to judge the parenting skills of a mother. She is always learning. Each child is unique in it's own way. As it is with new mothers, so it is with President Obama. Millions in our nation have lit their torches and are rallying together to burn him at the stake. We should, instead of harping on where he went wrong, focus on all that he's done right. It is time that we lay down our torches, be reasonable and remember that the person we see in the mirror is deeply flawed in more ways than one. Why don't you go back and check out the facts? Unemployment was up past 8% before the stimulus even went into effect. No one understood how bad it really was at the beginning of the Administration. Unemployment shot up because Bush and the GOP torpedoed the economy with the same failed "solutions" of tax cuts for the rich, deregulation, two wars with no tax increases to pay for them, etc combined with the Bush Administration's general incompetence in refusing to act on numerous warnings of the impending melt down, because he was afraid he would slow down his economic growth pattern. All of this drove the economy into the toilet, and the current crop of candidates is promoting the exact same solutions. 20 years of Reagan "trickle up" economic theory has increased the top 2% ownership of all American assets to over 40%, up from only 8% in 1969. The deficit caused by their tax cuts over 3 Administrations, not including the spending made necessary by Bush II's Administration's failures, into the Obama Administration (the stimulus package) as a result of the meltdown totaled over half of the current National Debt. The GOP has proved what does not work with Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II, now the GOP wants to try them again, meeting the classic definition of "Insanity": doing the same thing over and over, each time expecting a different result. Clinton's Administration proved what does work.

What does it say about B. Hussein Obama’s record that this was his campaign’s official debut re-election ad of 2012?
Mostly, it says that B. Hussein Obama has no positive record of accomplishments to run on. A record of success in jobs and the economy would've been easy to champion. But when you have a record of failure, joblessness, record deficit and U.S. Taxpayer spending with no positive results, Chicago-styled pay-for-play politicking & cronyism, recession and abject, blatant incompetence, half-truths are the best you can do.

Health care was supposed to be B. Hussein Obama’s great achievement. He promised his plan would bring down premiums “by $2,500” for the typical family. Last year, they rose by 9 percent.
B. Hussein Obama boldly promised that lobbyists would never “find a job in my White House.” Yet to date, he’s hired almost 100 of them.
In 2008, he said former President George W. Bush's adding of $4 trillion to the U.S. national debt was “unpatriotic.” Yet B. Hussein Obama has increased it by more than $4.5 trillion and is on track to add trillions more in only three years as president.
B. Hussein Obama promised to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. Instead, he racked up three record deficits of more than $1 trillion each year.
B. Hussein Obama promised he could create thousands of jobs with green energy spending. Then he lost a $535 million taxpayer-funded loan to the now-bankrupt, "green energy" company Solyndra.
With his $825 billion stimulus, Obama promised unemployment would stay at or below 8 percent. Not only did unemployment shoot past 8 percent, it hasn’t come back to that level since. It's been closer to between 9% and 10% for virtually his entire presidency, except in the last two months of 8.6% and 8.5%.
And then there’s the biggest promise of them all: the economy. B. Hussein Obama was so confident he could turn around the economy that he promised in early 2009 on NBC's Today Show, that if he didn’t have it fixed in “three years” then his presidency would “be a one-term proposition.”
(To be fair, that’s one promise he can still keep.)
In October of last year, President B. Hussein Obama unveiled the slogan “We Can’t Wait.” It was par for the course for a White House that regularly substitutes sloganeering for policymaking. And it was indeed merely a slogan. Three months later, we’re still waiting. We’re still waiting for a plan to revive the U.S. economy, a plan to reduce the U.S. national debt, a workable, reasonable, bi-partisan plan to keep any one of B. Hussein Obama’s many promises that HAVE NOT been kept. If this coming week is any indication, we’re going to be waiting a lot longer.
Remember, B. Hussein Obama is supposed to be this "great, compassionate man of the average-joe American" and president, but he is also the guy who actually insulted the handicapped and special needs, parents, coaches and players themselves of the Special Olympics on the Jay Leno show, calling his bad bowling, "like Special Olympics or something." This State of the Union address is nothing but another campaign speech. Obama has been non-stop campaigning ever since he took office. I challenge any liberal to name ONE good thing - just one - that Obama has done since he has taken office - and please don't say taking out Osama - who was probably taken out by Republican soldiers anyway. Obama has been steadily increasing participants in food stamps at an 11% increase yearly. He has been averaging 431,000 new additions to the Food Stamp program monthly as compared to George Bush's monthly increase of 150,000 new additions. So, yes, despite the uninformed "fact check" crowd, Gingrich has every right to call him the "Food Stamp President." More importantly, Obama has made such milestone achievements as having the U.S. debt exceed our GNP - shameful! He has also exceeded the long-term unemployment rate (> than six months) than that of the Great Depression. He has cut Medicare by One-Half $Trillion dollars and had the audacity to suggest that the Republicans want to make cuts to Medicare. He completely ignores the high price of gas which is costing the average American family $185 more per month than under George Bush at the end of his term. Gas at the end of Bush's term was $1.87 per gallon. Under Obama, we are averaging an increase of $2,220.00 per year! Obama has "cooked the books" on the unemployment rate by lowering the workforce population arbitrarily; hence, the unemployment rate looks more favorable than it really is. If the workforce population were the same as under Bush at the end of his term, the unemployment rate currently under Obama would be a staggering and shameful 11%! Obama is the definition of "hypocrisy" - just google "gas price hypocrisy" and check out the short video. Obama says that he has no "silver bullet" to bring down gas prices. Obviously. Perhaps he should call George Bush and ask George for his "silver bullet" because when gas prices spiked to over $3.00 per gallon under Bush, he promptly increased domestic production by issuing new drilling permits, renewals on existing permits, and cranked up production to bring prices down to $1.87 per gallon. Obama's high gas prices are fueling rampant inflation - food prices have soared! Yet, according to Obama, there is no inflation. Yeah, right! Do your own shopping for food, Mr. Obama! Obama just got the debt ceiling lifted and now he wants yet ANOTHER $1.2 Trillion! Incredible! And with absolutely nothing to show for the $5 Trillion he has spent in 3 years - more spending Presidents Washington through Clinton COMBINED! Obama has waged a "class warfare" which is pitting American against American. He once said in a campaign speech that he was going to unify America - he has done the polar opposite. He has set r a c e relations back 70 years - playing the r a c e card whenever anyone disagrees with his policies and agenda. He thumbs his nose at the Constitution all the time. Again, the so called austerity measures taken by many European countries, which are the same actions proposed by the GOP has resulted in zero, negative growth, and ever climbing unemployment. Those countries have unemployment rates ranging from 12 to 40%. Now, those countries are thinking duh, duh, duh, duh, may be we need to issue a stimulus. Go read European papers or economic magazines like the "Economist." The numbers don't lie. Since everyone wants to become an economist, to be truly informed, go take an econ course at your community college. I think I am sounding like a broken record, but Ireland had low taxes and regs but also lost a great portion of their manufacturing base to Asia once China was admitted to the WTO. The attractioin is those 3 billion new potential customers that they never had access to before and slave wages no one in the Western world can compete with.

I liked how the governor in his rebuttal made sure to remind us that, although the president reassures us that things are improving and will continue to improve, things are "grave". I'm sorry, maybe I'm in a more furtunate position, but things are much better than they were 3 years ago. In 2008, my spouse lost his overtime and with many layoffs, we were concerned he would also be laid off. For most of 2009 he had very little work. 2010 showed a good amount of work coming in. He still had little overtime, but we knew he wouldn't lose his job. Now, those laid off were brought back, they've hired several new people, and he is working 7 days a week. And he is in manufacturing.
I know we have a long way to go, but things are improving and I don't want to take a different course now. We know what happens with that course, and we will pay for it down the line.
The repubs seem to be working hard to convince us how bad things are. Maybe they are just preparing us in case their candidate wins the election.

In 1900, a mere one hundred and eleven years ago the nation’s debt was at about 1 billion dollars. The country has gone from 1 billion to over 14 TRILLION in that time span, not including the 60 TRILLION + in unfunded liabilities. Think about this. One hundred and eleven years equates to 40,515 days given a day here and there for leap years. In 40, 500 days the national debt has risen from approximately 1 Billion to 14 Trillion. Asleep or by design?
Who has been doing this? Not the American tax payers, that’s for sure. Does such a run up in debt make any sense at all? There are plenty of excuses to go around, but in the end the people who took an oath of office to uphold the Constitution have put the nation and all of its citizen’s lives in grave peril. Talk about a national security issue. The Constitution never intended for Uncle Sam to become Daddy War Bucks or for American citizens to become indentured servants to the Federal Government. That is exactly what has happened.

The country is improving. It shows daily. It's a very slow moving recovery. Mainly because too many people are standing in the way and trying to Fear Monger us into giving the government back over to the group that wants to do the same things that got us into this mess.
I watched the President's speech and felt he is making progress and could do more if Congress would work with him. He is encouraging us to do our best and be our best with a little help from the government. He is reducing the government and making it leaner and better able to help with less spending in some areas and using that savings to help us in other areas.
I then watched the Republican response. They said the President wanted the opposite of what was said in the State of the Union speech. Then said they wanted to fix America by doing almost the same things the President said he was already working on, but needs the cooperation of Congress and the Senate. If the Republicans really believe what they say, they should put bills before the President to sign, not just say rhetoric.
The President thinks our country is great and that we are recovering (which we are). The Republicans say we are worse than we are and try to fear monger us into voting for them again. It's insanity. An example:
When a commercial from the Republicans blame the President for the Republican majority Congress not doing their own job...something is seriously wrong in their own minds. The Budget is made by Congress and the President doesn't even have to sign it. How could it be his fault they haven't made one in over 1000 Days if they have the majority votes???

I was a bit surprised that President Obama gave such a well thought out response to all the Republican Presidential Candidate's "gloom and doom" and "Failure" talk. The President said that he wanted to use half of the peace dividend to pay down the debt. To do that the federal budget first has to be balanced. The President did not indicate when that would occur. Years ago the President promised that the 2012 federal deficit would not exceed 229.27 billion dollars but he failed to explain how that is going to be accomplished. I want to know when the budget is going to be balanced. I want to know what it is going to cost the tax payers and how long it is going to take to pay back all of this money that we have been borrowing. The President failed to address my concerns in his state of the union speech.

To put off a decision, just so not to offend any potential voters is insane! And by the way, most of the jobs created by the pipeline are not temporary. The pipeline will be strictly maintained. You can't live in fear of "what might happen". The Prime Minister of Canada said building the pipeline was a "no brainer" for all the good it would do. Do you know anything about economics? Countries have ratings just like companies, Europe HAS to do austerity measures or they will be downgraded to a point where borrowing money will be at an interest rate unaffordable and their currency will become junk overnight. Just like your own personal credit score America's credit rating is very important. We have already lost our AAA rating and have been downgraded, if we were to get downgraded to say a B+ rating the interest rate on our debt would be so high we wouldn't be able to afford anything other then interest payments. We would no longer have anyone willing to buy or bonds so we wouldn't be able to run further debt. You can't just spend to infinity, you have to be able to pay for some of it. Raise taxes all you want it doesn't make up for the massive amount of debt, and cuts will be made, and the longer you let it go the deeper the cuts will be. There is the possibility of printing so much money that our currency is pretty much useless, and we are exchanging $20,000 bills for milk and bread, and those who saved for thirty years to get $300,000 will realize their money now isn't worht $h!t.
It is time for a flat consumption tax and to do away with the standing tax code. I don't want the rich or the poor to pay more than I do I just want them to pay the same. A consumption tax would prevent tax cheaters whether rich, poor or illegal from cheating on taxes plus we would profit from all the illegal activity money because why have it if you don't spend it.
And we've come too far to turn back now.

Three years ago this week, more than 2 million souls, at least half of them African American, converged upon the nation's capital. They came, in what my colleague Glen Ford called the Great Black Hajj of 2009, to witness and celebrate the swearing in of the nation's first African American president. They wept and danced and sang and prophesied. They marveled at how far they had come. It was, their leaders assured them, the beginning of a new day.
Three years later, it's clear that this is indeed a new day, a new era. But for most of black America, it's not the one they hoped for. Nobody expected urban poverty would begin to vanish overnight, or that millions of acres of lost black farmland would be restored. But promises were made, and expectations were justifiably high, not because Barack Obama had promised to investigate Wall Street, prosecute banksters, or stop the imperial wars and illegal foreclosures, but because humans do have the right to expect justice at home and peace abroad, whether their leaders deliver these things or not.
The highly questionable political strategy of withholding back black demands for economic or social justice and peace, so as not to embarrass, pressure or visibly tie the black presidential candidate, and later the black president to his base was so widely accepted that by mid 2007 it was a staple of black stand-up comedy routines. Three years into the Obama era, the silencing of black demands lest they embarrass the president is no longer a tactic. It's a religion, rigorously enforced by the black misleadership class and its wannabees, who fall over each other in their eagerness to mock and scorn heretics like Tavis Smiley and Cornel West for daring to highlight the fact that black poverty and joblessness are at levels not seen in seventy years.
So it is that black people, black demands, and black communities are impotent, voiceless and paralyzed. The creeping privatization of our schools, the continuing gentrification of our urban and suburban communities, and the mass incarceration of our youth all, and the diversion of resources from health care and good jobs to the war economy and corporate welfare all continue apace in the era of Obama, but without visible black protest. Black protest, and black America used to be where the left lived. Black America used to be the visible, beating heart of the American left, in permanent opposition to wars of imperial conquest, to despoiling the environment, to gutting social security and Medicaid. Those days are over.
The priority of the black political class is to damp down protests unless they can be directed exclusively against Republicans, to protect their careers, contacts and contracts, to stifle any criticism of the president, and to pretend that Republicans are to blame for whatever the Obama administration should have done and didn't. It's time to circle the wagons and invoke the false god of “black unity” for the 2012 elections. But what is it we are supposed to unify around?
We can't really say Barack Obama has stood up for poor and working people. Obama specifically promised to raise the minimum wage to $9 an hour, to walk a picket line himself and to pass the Employee Free Choice Act during his first two years in office, while he still had an enormous Democratic majority in Congress. Tax weary, where were you when they signed 8 new freetrade agreements in less than 10 years between Clinton and Bush and made China a permanent preferred trading partner and reduced our tariffs to almost nothing. These actions are what resulted in taking away good US high paying middle class jobs. I guess you were so busy using the fake over extension of credit, which allowed you to pretend to be doing better than you were, to notice what I stated above. I mean when the fake credit economy blew up it appears that the "Emperor had no Clothes on" but people were in denial and refuse to look. I am sick to death of taxes and have the rich pay their fair share. I would consider raising taxes on the rich when we make the 44% who pay no taxes pay their fair share. I personally think it is criminal when someone pays in 3,500 hundred during the year in fed taxes and then gets back over 5,000 come tax time. So all you progressives out there, just where does that extra money come from? Abolish the child credit, extra child credit. If you can't afford to have children then don't have any. Why should the rich have to pay for your children. Reform the tax code, lower rates and make EVERYONE pay taxes. With little bipartisan efforts the unemployment rate is down to 8.5% & continues to decline slowly. That sounds like progress considering it takes years for policies to take effect. Bush inherited a deficit of 5.7 Trillion, he exited office with 10.7 Trillion. Obama inherited the 10.7 trillion and it is now 14.2T. If you subtract the 1.3T stemming from the TARP Act signed in Oct., 3rd 2008 by Bush that Obama's being held responsible for, his term accumulated only 2.2T. Bottom line when Republicans make comments like my only agenda is to beat Obama in 2012, it makes it difficult for independent voters to respect that rhetoric. All these numbers will come to light when the primary's take place & I want to know what whomever receives my vote is going to do to continue progress in this Country and NOT who's winning a political turf war!

The highest unemployment reached was during George W. Bush's term was 7.2% in December of 2008 which was just a couple of weeks before Obama took office. This was just about a year after the collapse of the housing bubble.
And whoever it was that said it wasn't the housing market but the derivatives market that was the cause I would have to say you are sort of correct in that it was the credit default swaps that played a major role in the tanking of the world economy

It is funny when the try to pick at what Obama's uplifting speech that shows he has a great grasp of the problems. He is a hard working American and I have renewed faith in the system.

Ummm, reading through the posts, where are those who believe that Obama is the solution to every problem? The posts that I have read here tonight all tend to follow my own thoughts, that being, Obama is the problem.
Just heard a preview of a part of Obama forthcoming speech, where he expelled words such as , why should Warren Buffet's secretary have to pay a higher tax rate than does Buffet. I am sure that we have children or grandchildren who are in grade school, who have a better understanding of the tax structure than do those libs who idolize Obama. These kids have already, by the educational programs, learned that income tax is charged at a higher rate than are Capital Gains, which is what Buffet's accountants are reporting. And, this young people have already been taught that person's such as Buffet know all of the loopholes to escape paying taxes.
What would be great tonight, if Obama were to be an honest person, would be for him to admit that he is a failure, that he is a liar, for he has not, as of yet, honored any campaign promises, and that he has really enjoyed spending the US Taxpayers money of his numerous vacations, most of which were, or so it seems, early campaigning. I, for one, being a conservative strongly object to my tax dollars funding his re-election bid.

Have you read the Constitution of the United States? Last time I checked, Article II talks about the role of Congress. What has Congress done to correct the economic situations this country? What have the republicans done to stop Corporate Welfare, Lobbyists from buying votes, the export of American Jobs to other countries? They have done absolutely nothing, and why? the teabaggers believe its their way or the highway.
What would be great is if Republicans also stood up in Congress and said "We have made mistakes". We are ready to compromise with the President and do what's right for the people they represent.

I think that virtually all of the troubles we are facing were handed to President Obama on inauguration day. Some of the economic catastrophes of the last 4 years were 30 years in the making but, to many here and in America, those troubles should have been resolved by the President within oh, maybe 90 days of so and even then, he would not have gotten the credit. I don't know that I have ever seen a public figure in more of a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. The pathetic pandering to the red meat crowd by, particularly Newt and Santorum with their insipid, "Food Stamp President" tripe should be called what it is. I look forward to the progress that can be made in the second term without the concern for reelection.

In reading the comments on this board, what I find astounding is the mass of anti-Obama comments made before even one word came out of his mouth. We get it, you people don't like him and we understand completely that what ever he says, it can't change the fact that he is Black. No policy shift or compromise can cure that problem.
But know that at least some of us have heard his words, let me point out just a few seemingly very cryptic words said tonight. "Insider trading in Congress". Do any of you know what this is about? I'll give you one recent clue, and there are many more. Can you say "Keystone Pipeline"? Any idea just how many key loud voices in this debate have significant holdings in the companies that stand to make big money off this? Do a little research. Would it be appropriate for a Congressman to make huge sums of money off of the policy positions he supports? Do you think that is OK?
That is not to say that one party has exclusivity in this regard, but Republicans dominate this corrupt practice. One could argue that it might not meet the exact legal definition of insider trading, but it comes very close at the least. It is immoral and corrupt if nothing else. Would you really want to cast your vote for someone who invested in a pattern consistent with their policies? Some hints of this sort of thing surfaced a few weeks ago and seemingly died a quiet death. But I assure there were some people puckering tonight when they heard those words. The President said it for a reason. It seemed almost unnoticeable and appeared to be just thrown out there as some lefty rhetoric, but in reality he was issuing a warning that the gloves were coming off. This will not take the form of a Congressional investigation or an ethics committee revelation. Most likely it will come from the SEC and the Justice Department. At some point when they don't want to play ball with you, you need to use all the weapons at your disposal. This was the silent warning shot over the bow. It was like a warning to your kids when they know exactly what you are talking about and realize that you might just have an upper hand if you choose to use it. Frankly I hope it isn't just a threat and I hope he follows through with it and exposes some of these slimeballs for exactly what they are. Even the Tea Party membership would have a hard time not getting behind this. The Tea Party is outrageously crazy and believes in bullying to get their way, but for the most part, they aren't crooks. And they are repulsed by those that are. I would not be at all surprised if some of them became key witnesses because they have no use for the gold old boys club. Nothing better than turning your worst enemy into an ally. Stay tuned!

My family has voted the Democratic ticket going back at least 4 generations and 75 years. Not one member of any of those generations has ever collected any type of social welfare unless one wants to count some college financial aid (not a lot but some) and the benefits one member receives as a combat-disabled Vietnam veteran. We are not special, there are many families like us. None of us are wealthy and all of us have worked more or less straight through to retirement. I wish that we could lose some of the rhetoric about people who vote the way we do all being system-sucking lazy, food-stamp loving wastrels but, that may be too much to ask.

Bush and the GOP "theories" started a massive downturn in the economy which was impossible to quickly turn, as the trajectory had been set by Bush and Co, and was one in which the massive amounts of money put into the economy were able to change a upcoming depression to a bad recession. All the GOP and the current occupants of the House want to do is reapply the same failed theories of tax cuts for the rich, more deregulation, and spending cuts in the Federal sector which will only restart the recession, continue the transfers of wealth to the top 2%. Haven't you wondered why the rich now own 40 percent of all of America's assets, and their income has gone up 275 percent, while the rest of the nation is either unemployed, part of the working poor, or part of the ever shrinking middle class? Putting the GOP back in power is just like giving the keys to your car to your drunken brother in law after he has wrecked his own car, your wife's, and now needs to borrow yours to drive to the bar for another drink. Your not seriously asking that question are you? Have you heard of a little company called Apple, and one called Foxconn, and that country called China? Please, if there wasn't a difference, why would they go to so much effort? Of course there is a savings, which is why most corporations do it. How many Apple plants have they opened in the US? They are making lots of money right? How about the thousands+ of other companies turning profits with products made oversears? Those 'job creators' have been given the opportunity to create the jobs with all the profits they are making and continue to reap the benefits with little to no changes US based manufacturing jobs.
If corporations don't pay taxes, they will simply continue to do as they are doing, if not worse. Frankly, they should pay more, when outsourcing offshore, or be taxed on incoming shipments. I too want the jobs created by US based manufacturing, and those workers paying their fair share of the taxes. But, your not going to get the corporations to change their behavior unless you get their attention in some way. Make it cost more to make the products offshore, appeal to their patriotism or good will, or have the buyers not buy it.
I think you have to get their attention using taxes, as profits seem to drive their patriotism and its too difficult to sell the 'Buy American' mantra when you gots to have an iPhone.

Bc after they pay workers and shipping what is the total imported savings vs u.s manufacturing? basically how much tax should we place on a imported good so it is not worth manufacturing it elsewhere.

But the point I am asking is what is the appropriate way to compete with an ultra competitive China? Just how much do we need to bend to bring back the jobs? You can by judicious use of the tax code. You can create jobs by imposing higher taxes on Corporate America which has higher profits now than ever before, then offering tax credits for every new job created. Corporate America has no incentive to create jobs, they have over 3.5 Trillion in profits in the bank on and off shore, and are earning even more, as the people struggle, and the middle class shrinks.
Interesting idea ATC. now here is one problem i see with that plan...those companies executives are not going to take a cut in pay and neither will the standard employee, so whats to avoid trickle down price increases to supplement the higher taxes while avoiding hiring employees bc the tax credit will not equal the money spent hiring a new worker?

There is your problem. The solution is here also. We have 401ks with 2.6 Trillion invested in the USA. ( 5.2 Trillion of 2008). These funds are controlled by Fund managers ( executives) who invest a big part of it in corporations and these control who gets on the boards and which executives get hired.
I hope you can see that a change in the law governing the 401ks can have an effect on the action and compensation of executives. Though I would need to think about how it would be implemented.
There is not much discussion on this topic. Though its old and has been around forever. I think we need to look to germany and japan to find out how they keep there executive compensation much lower then the USA.
The whole problem is that the huge executive compensation is corrupting everything. The inability for the SEC to police Wall street is because of the mountains of cash used to bribe.

Setting a cap on their spending the same way we try to do with our federal budget only limit it to regulate those that make over a certain amount per year or disallow bonuses by a corporation to only the executives, instead make it an across the entire employment in the company, each person receives the same % of their earning bonus as the executives! example one executive earns 1million and say he gets a 10% bonus now to make it fair for ALL employees, John Smith the janitor who makes 30k a year also gets a 10% bonus. Now thats equality or closer than we currently are!!

The problem has been discussed before but we see the funds ( institutions) hold the stock( shares). Who are in the funds? The american public make up the bulk of the funds and so do the public overseas.
These fund managers manage the fund on behalf over the public. Yet the returns are sh+t. I want the members to have voting power on how the executives who run the funds decide on who they vote on the board of a corporation.
This would then put American values on american corporations. It would slowly push down the big lumps of cash these unproductive S.O.Bs get.
Even if it did not do that, at least we could not blame anyone else. We the american public in the funds and especially 401ks then set the pay of public corporations.
Simply this. The fund managers send out a letter to fill out each year to the public and they set how much they want the executives to get. They just choose from 10 different figures. That 51% are the pay that they want the fund manager to vote on the stock .
Then also have vote on pay for when they fail, or success. The devil is in the detail.

The GDP is about the same as it was during Bush which was not great cause he and Clinton sent a good portion of our manufacturing base to Asia. Dont talk about high taxes and regs sent the jobs away cause Ireland had low taxes and few reg, but still lost jobs to China. Businesses were flocking to Ireland in the late 80s. Many of the companies that sent jobs to Asia from paid little or no taxes. These facts are well documented. If you watch CNBC, often corp CEOs explained jobs moved mostly in pursuit of those new 3 billion customers resulting from China opening up. Read and stop making assumptions. Its an ignorant man who makes assumption based on politcal ideologies instead of facts.

The tax rate max was 50% under Reagan for several years, this is true. What you failed to point out is that he lowered it to that from a max rate of 70%. He lowered it further to 38.5% in 87, then 28% in 88.
It is currently at 35%, but I would guess that most Americans that pay taxes are in the 25% range. The rich are the 35% range. It's all the loopholes in the tax code and deductions that throw the whole thing out the window and allow rich people to pay less taxes than the average person. If they threw the tax code out the window and everyone paid the same percentage with NO deductions, you couldn't say it wasn't fair. If you make $10, you owe 15% or $1.50. If you make 1000000, you owe 15% or $150000, problem solved. There should be no free rides. If you live here, you should pay taxes. You may say that's unfair to poor people. Why is that unfair? They get to use all the public facilities I have access to, they get to vote same as me, etc. The difference is I do not get any assistance with buying my groceries or paying my rent. If you want a fair tax, then everyone pays. There are no free rides if it's to be fair.

An 18yr. old high school graduate with a hard-earned B grade average was thrust into adulthood and the workforce all on his own in 1968. He was the oldest of several children and worked hard since the age of ten to help support his family in any way he could. His very poor parents still struggled to house and feed his siblings and would miss him sorely.
He knew that the only way to help his family escape such poverty was to lift himself first. Needless to say, there was no college fund or savings to afford him higher learning. He was competitive in high school sports and earned good grades in the classroom, but not nearly enough to earn a scarce scholarship in those times.
He took the first job he could he could find under miserable conditions and minimum wage to weigh his options. Well paying union jobs required strong familial or prominent connections. Strike one. Civic jobs seemed to be the best next option. He scoured the "help wanted" ads from police recruits to "sanitation engineer". One ad got his immediate attention.
" Columbus Police Dept. actively pursues healthy high school graduates as police recruits, preferably black." He was white and astounded. Please remember that 1968 America was engulfed in the civil rights movement that he fully supported then and now. That ad still burns his soul today. If it had read,"preferably white", the city of Columbus, Ohio might still be in flames. Strike two.
This young lad was not easily discouraged. He was fairly bright with a good work ethic. He relentlessly continued his search for a way out of poverty after several dead-end jobs. He discovered a jobs training program first initiated by JFK that was in it's final days. 6 months of training with a promise of job placement depending on his success in training. They paid him $55.00 a week while in class. Not enough for partying, but enough for a cheap efficiency apartment, oatmeal for breakfast and S.O.S for supper.
The kid made it. Not in his chosen vocation, that class was filled. His next best choice led him into a successful family business that endures today. That is the American dream. Not the hand-out that many disdain, but the hand up that those same people find equally disdainful. They got theirs by hook or crook. To he11 with the rest of us.
As long as bigotry exists, moderate and fair affirmative action much also exist. As long as class warfare exists among the wealthy, champions of the poor must also exist to fight them tooth and nail. It has never been a battle between the haves and have-nots. It has always been a battle for fairness and an equal opportunity for the American dream for all of us. Exactly what qualifications does President Obama have to speak with authority on job creation? Has the man ever had a real job? Has he ever created a job? Has he ever had to meet a payroll? All he proposes is a bigger and more intrusive, controlling government. Government never creates wealth. Before Government can spend one dime they must confiscate it from someone who earned or created it.
I guess you missed the part where he wants to combine several agencies into one to save money. You do realize that government was larger under both Reagan and GWB. As for jobs, well, Romney was governor of MA and worked at Bain Capital. He also inherited millions and millions from his dad. Obama was raised by a single parent and worked his way into Harvard Law School. In addition to working as a community organizer in Chicago, he also taught law at the University of Chicago and was a U.S. Senator. Unlike Romney, he didn't inherit most of his wealth, he earned it!

Romney has never had to interview for a job. The closest thing to a job he has ever had is the company he started with his father's money. He didn't work for that money, unless you count being born the son of a rich man as work. He's had the silver spoon not only in his mouth, but up his rear end.

Maybe being a one-term governor could be considered a job. But he's never had to actually labor. He's never had to worry about paying the bills, making sure there was enough money to buy groceries, or pay the rent, keeping the lights and heat on.
I guess any standing president would use the State of the Union for 'politicking' in a voting year. But THIS president has never stopped since he took office. Speaking of 'politicking', he promised a million "shovel-ready job" and then turned one down for the pipe line across the US.. THEN, said in his speech that he was going to encourage going after natural gas -- which is a lot more dangerous and will take a lot more study to use better chemicals.... what would that be -- two years from now. Let's get the oil pipeline, make it safe and hire thousands NOW!

You also need to realize the number of laws and regulations that have been enacted since Reagan that make the government more intrusive now then ever before. (I include things passed by Bush like the patriot act)

Sacred Fire - Jealousy is an ugly emotion. It is none of your business or anybody elses how Romney made his money. At least he is not on the public dole like Obama has been for his entire adult life. My point is that Obama has never created one dime of wealth. All he has ever done is spend the earnings of others. You and I will never see eye to eye on this but I do respect your right to voice your opinion. I own and operate a small business. Obama Health care will mean one of two things for me. Either I will go out of business or I will be forced to lay off 2 good employees. How does either of those options help our country? I know what the government impact is to business and it is worse under Barak Obama than any other president. He is not the guy to address public sector job growth.
