Conservatives, evangelical Christians rebuff Romney in South Carolina

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who just a few days ago seemed poised to capitalize on his New Hampshire primary victory to win South Carolina, failed to appeal to conservative, lower-income, and evangelical Christian voters in the state, which led to Saturday’s victory for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Click here for full results of the primary in South Carolina

And exit poll interviews indicated that South Carolina Republicans emphatically disagreed with the judgment of their GOP counterparts in New Hampshire that Romney was the Republican best able to beat President Barack Obama in November.

Forty-five percent of voters interviewed said that defeating Obama in November was the issue that mattered most to them and 51 percent of them chose Gingrich. Romney won 37 percent of those voters.

Born-again or evangelical Christians accounted for nearly two-thirds of the electorate and Gingrich easily beat Romney in that group: 44 percent to 21 percent.

Three out of five voters interviewed in the exit poll said that it mattered somewhat or greatly whether a candidate shared their religious views and Gingrich beat Romney by better than two to one among such voters.

Gingrich is a former Baptist who converted to Roman Catholicism; Romney is a Mormon, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Self-described Catholics made up 13 percent of the electorate and Gingrich won 37 percent of them; former Pennsylvania senator Santorum, also a Catholic, won 17 percent of Catholic voters, while Romney won 30 percent.

Among those who said having shared religious beliefs with a presidential contender did not much matter or didn’t matter at all, Romney prevailed, 39 percent to Gingrich’s 32 percent.

Self-described conservatives accounted for nearly 70 percent of the electorate and Gingrich won 44 percent of those voters, compared to Romney’s 24 percent.

There were some indications in the exit poll data that this week’s debate in which Gingrich furiously denounced the news media for reporting allegations made by his ex-wife their marriage may have helped him. Nearly 90 percent of exit poll respondents said the recent debates were a factor in deciding whom to support and Gingrich trounced Romney in that group: winning 42 percent to Romney’s 25 percent.

More than half the voters told exit poll interviewers that they’d decided in the last few days for whom they would vote and Gingrich overwhelmingly won such late deciders, getting 44 percent of them to Romney’s 22 percent.

There was almost no gender gap in Saturday’s electorate, according to the exit poll. Women voters favored Gingrich, 38 percent to Romney’s 29 percent. Among male voters, Gingrich won 42 percent and Romney 26 percent.

Gingrich beat Romney by 16 percentage points – 40 percent to 24 percent -- among voters who said they had a family income of less than $50,000 a year.

Less educated voters also favored Gingrich – a former college history professor -- by a wide margin: those with no college degree accounted for 53 percent of Saturday’s electorate and Gingrich won 42 percent of those voters, with Romney getting only 24 percent of them. Santorum won 19 percent of such voters, while Rep. Ron Paul of Texas won 14 percent of them.

But among voters with a postgraduate education, Romney beat Gingrich, 37 percent to 34 percent.

In the past two weeks, Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who quit the race on Thursday, had assailed Romney’s role as head of Bain Capital in the 1980s. Bain Capital bought and restructured companies, leading in some cases to layoffs of workers.

But nearly two out of three voters said they had a positive view of Romney’s investment and managerial career.

Among the 28 percent of voters who said they had a negative view of Romney’s business career, not surprisingly 50 percent of them backed Gingrich, compared to 23 percent for Paul and 22 percent for Santorum.

While nearly all exit poll interviewees said they were “very or somewhat worried” about the direction of the nation’s economy in the next few years, only about one out of five said their own family was falling behind financially. Of that “falling behind” group, Gingrich ran first, winning 44 percent of them to Romney’s 25 percent.

Gingrich also won among voters age 65 and over, winning 47 percent of them to Romney’s 36 percent.

The South Carolina outcome was a remarkable turnaround for Gingrich who barely finished fourth in the New Hampshire primary last week.

Gingrich’s lackluster New Hampshire performance did not seem to bode well for the South Carolina contest: he could not break above 20 percent for any of the age, income, ideological or demographic groups that were identified in the New Hampshire exit poll sample from that contest.

Agreed. Evangelicals have to be the dumbest people in our society by far. C'mon, this guy cheated on his cancer-stricken wife, wanted to have an open relationship with his wife, so he could continue forking his mistress, and then had the balls to go after Clinton for something he did as well.

These morons only care about forcing Jesus on other people. They could care less about constitutional rights, unless it fits with their religious views.

I agree with most everyone here. Total hypocrisy by the "Social Conservative" crowd.

But then again, the whole idea that Christians live in such a wealthy consumer society with their giant money temples seems to go against the message of Jesus in the Bible...again hypocrisy.....

-Sam, your anecdotal statements to mock liberals and the commander-in-chief doesn't make much evaluative/comparative sense. Do you even understand foreign policy as it relates to the inheritance of the national interests between adminstrations?

So tell us what you sterotypically believe is true about, "libs,' instead of what is false, and I'm sure you'll find not just a lot of respondents on the left, but also a lot of centrists willing to debate you and your view of the world.

Good grief, if these people aren't casting their votes for their values, WTH are they doing?

I can't believe these folks have forgotten and/or are willing to overlook Gingrich's total lack of character and morals!

The job of president should be filled by a person with (at least some) values, morals and good character. Newt Gingrich fails in every respect.

Should any South Carolinian ever declare that they are part of a state dedicated to the moral, ethical and religious tenets of our Constitution, I'll be happy to remind them of their vote today to award their delegates to a serial adulterer, Congressional ethics violator and one of the most divisive Speaker's in our history.

Just remember when he pulled your heart strings at the last debate and in a tone designed to make you feel guilty for his behavior, when he said, "all of us have suffered pain", just remember, he didn't suffer the pain, he inflicted it when he announced to his wife he had a mistress.

He may be saying all the right things and pushing your emotional buttons, but this guy is a narcissistic jerk with a severe sociopathic bent. Good luck GOP.

Nope - I've looked through all the existing Polls. Aside from Santorum being unkown and some of the polls not considering Gingrich and Santorum - this is a setback for Romney.

You might see Santorum or Newt catch Romney in Florida. Newt and Santorum have been trading support down there. I see Romney dropping 10 - 15 points and those points being split between Newt and Santorum. The interesting thing will be to see what happens with the Paul vote. As Paul drops Santorum and Roney appear to be picking up most of them.

Should Santorum manage a win in Florida, the previous polling is worthless and it's anybody's race.

These evangelicals claim that their worried about the economy. I find that interesting because since President Obama came into office the economy has been on a steady recovery. I believe the economy may just be a convenient excuse for their hatred of the President. After all this IS South Carolina...you know first state to succeed from the union, and lets not forget we didn't hear a peep from these folks when G.W. Bush and friends were ripping the economy to pieces in 2006, 2007 and 2008. I may be wrong but I suspect we didn't hear from them then because Bush is white guy that was willing to cram evangelical religious beliefs down everybody's throats........... I would like to have an atheist for president.

That way HE will have to do a good job, not pray for help that will not come.

If praying for a better life works so good, why are the religious areas the poorest?

Jews make more money than Christians, maybe we should have a Jewish president.

Mormons do very well financially, why not have a Mormon?

Evangelicals are the poorest. If we want the economy to get going, maybe we should vote for whoever they are against.

Voting for your religion is what we bitch about the Muslims doing. Having the government pander to religious beliefs is what we complain about the Muslims doing. About the only real difference between a Christian fanatic and a Muslim fanatic is the dead person they swear allegiance to.

Bill, an atheist would be the best president, especially if both houses of congress and the supreme court was also filled with us. Ah what wonderful things we could do for mankind if we didn't have the shackles of superstition always holding us back. We could actually have long term goals, a true purpose rather than our current mindless consumerism as we wait for "god" to come back for us so we can spend eternity kissing his feet and praising him for playing a very sadistic game of chess with our lives.

"Let's see, Lenin was an athiest, Stalin was an athiest, Hitler was an athiest, Mao was an athiest... All such wonderful, progressive societies! Right?"

First place none of these people had or were progressives. In fact hitler made this statement about his anti Jewish rhetoric and was a christian.

"Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord."

Hitler was raised catholic did not pratice the religion when he became and adult but did believe in god.

Mao practiced Confucianism and Taoism. He did reject modern religion as a tool for those who did not believe in communism.

Stalin went down the same path.

To try to include these men in a statement meant to be anti liberal is as useless as the proverbial tits on a boar hog. I wont even give you a nice try on this one cause all it took for you to seem intelligent was to use your computer a bit.

    Wasilla witch said:

The job of president should be filled by a person with (at least some) values, morals and good character. Newt Gingrich fails in every respect

But you are more than willing to elect our current President, who has very questionable values, morals and an elusive character? How hypocritical is that?

Repeatedly the question is asked what is the top goal this election, which comes back, "to make sure Obama is not re-elected." Oddly enough, the Liberal Media never asks "Why?" To ask one question without the second question is incredibly poor reporting bent toward helping the current President. (Mostly alluding to the "faux racism" they keep running back to since the truth would make the decision of who to vote for a sure thing.)

Yes, the number 1 goal is to not let Obama be re-elected. why? So we can get rid of Obamacare before all those who are paying the taxes to pay for this lose most or all of their care. So we can end the anti-business atmosphere currently in Washington. So we can end the exploding gravy train the Democrats are creating to increase their voting block. To balance our budget before we become Greece. To bring common sense, civility and grace back to Washington. I could go on, but the point is clear. The Obama "experiment" was a total failure. It is not time to purposely repeat that mistake and guarantee 4 more years of being dragged down the road to 3rd world status.

I bet you that if Jesus Christ himself were running for president, he wouldn't win.

Of course, non-Christian voters wouldn't vote for him since he isn't supposed to exist or does not agree with their personal religious views.

He would openly condemn most Christian denominations for their hypocrisy, therefore losing their vote.

Big business would be intimidated by his message of honesty, "love thy neighbor", and "show mercy to the poor". In fact, the pharma companies would be angered by his healing people for free and would lobby the FDA to ban it as illegal - which it probably would.

Other opponents would highlight the fact that neither heaven or Bethlehem are in the United States, so he is not elligible to run anyway.

Ultimately, the powers that be would be afraid of him want to shut him up - permanently. A covert CIA assassination plot would be hatched, and he would be killed by the very people he was trying to help - again.

Romney, whatever you feel about him, seems to be faithful to his religion. Unfortunately for him, his view of Jesus doesn't fit with the conservative Christian view, so they vote for Gingrich - overlooking his three marriages, cheating on his first two wives, and leaving Congress in disgrace. Well, I guess he did his justify cheating as he did it for his country. It's just sad.

Guys - you don't understand the real problem with Romney. They see him as a strong businessman, but a not so strong politician. They have serious doubts about Romney really dumping the HCL. With Gingrich, the concern isn't his personal life, it is will he be consistent and contain himself. That is why Santorum has climbed steadily. He is consistent and presents a clear contrast to Obama. His solid third place finish tonight should keep him into Florida. I think secretly the Conservative wing would like to support Santorum, but they want to be certain he will stand up and continue to grow - like Ronald Reagan did in 1980.

Methinks that the opportunity to visit the White House and stay there whenever has blinded their memories.

Methinks too, that it doesn't matter what Romney believes--he hasn't and he won't put his neck under the yoke of the Southern Baptist Convention, and for that, the SBC will condemn him at every turn.

Actually as a christian ( not mormon), I can see the liberal bias this article has. Evangelicals did not vote for Gingrich because he is a Baptist turned Catholic and not mormon. It just goes to show you MSNBC would make up any story to appeal to all the atheists on this site.

Anyone who fell for this liberal article is just as biased. Somebody should sue MSNBC for all their crap and accusations.

S.C. is an open primary state and many Democrats voted for Newt because they feel he'll be easier for the President to defeat, so while Newt definitely did win, the true margin is smaller than what's being reported and that means next up Florida will be a major player in the primary race. S.C. has succeeded in making its' Presidential primary a joke by moving it to January and allowing voters from both parties to participate (keep that in mind the next time there's an S.C. Democrat Presidential primary) .

        Unhappy -

Did you even read the article? Or did you just view this article as just a convenient springboard to rail against "the liberals" and "the atheists"? The article is reporting exit poll breakdowns, not editorializing. Facts are facts. (Somehow I think this will confuse you)

Obviously, you did not read the article. The article is meant to mislead you. The truth is if you do the math, Newt won by only a slim lead. Second, the article is trying to make you believe that conservative=Christian? Not necessarily. Notice the wording.

Born-again or evangelical Christians accounted for nearly two-thirds of the electorate and Gingrich easily beat Romney in that group: 44 percent to 21 percent. (two-thirds=66%) ( 66x .44) = 29.04

(66x.56)=36.96 + ( other part of the 66%= 34%) = did not vote for Newt

Self-described conservatives accounted for nearly 70 percent of the electorate and Gingrich won 44 percent of those voters, compared to Romney’s 24 percent.

Again do the math and don't equat conservative with christian. conservative = christian

If Romney can't win Iowa and can't win S.C., then he might as well quit. The problem is, the Republican establishment want him in. They don't have anybody else. Newt is not the "one"....anybody who can stand that man has a hole in the head. He's arrogant, fat, academic (and everybody makes fun of Obama for being "professor" like, well look at Newt!) and racist. He's going to use the Willie Horton race card whenever and wherever he can, because he doesn't appeal to the moderate intelligent Republican, only the lowly working class and trashy southerners.

Exactly right, bigfinn. Many of the uneducated down here in the strict, almost Puritanical deep south are confused why Obama didn't simply take the magic wand out of his pocket and make the biggest economic disaster in 80 years disappear.

Meanwhile, the well funded Repuglican machine has been busy working to perpetuate the myth that this is all the current administration's fault, and everything was rosy under Cheney/Bush. The corporate masters have refused to hire, relishing the high unemployment, fear of losing their jobs, partially paid for houses that they can repossess and sell again, and record profits and bonuses for the 1%. It is all working to their plan, yet things are getting better in spite of the obstructionists, and that galls them to no end.

        WAY TO GO RON PAUL!!!!
        "SLOW & STEADY..."

When doing things in the Right Way there is no time frame that needs to be met....

This man here has been telling the truth from day one and he understands many of the inefficiencies within our society that are truly holding us back as a nation.

He is RON "THE REAL" PAUL!!!!

        • Now, I don't agree with him about coming to the people's defense in nations where the governments are being rogue and taking their citizens individual freedoms through force.
        • I believe we must stand up in the face of wrong and should fight up to the point in which we do not invade an individual's personal freedoms.
        • I also disagree with his opinion on investing in education in this country,
        • Another disagreement is the fact that everyone is responsible for themselves and the situations that they are in.
        • Although, I do agree with the majority of this comment. I do believe that we have to provide those who are born into a messed up situation and who do not have the same opportunities as other children with the tools and resources to have the same opportunities as the other children.

Even though I do not agree with Ron "THE REAL" Paul on these issues, I would still vote for him because of his honesty, his keen ability to notice inefficiencies & because he is willing to accept the truth. When you are willing to accept the truth only then can you begin to recognize & solve a problem.

Now all of the candidates needs to take notes from this guy.

In a democracy, private live, values and moral are personal and are no one's business and they should not be part of politics !

What they should be talking about are what are they going to do to relief the pain and suffering of millions of americans ??? SAFETY NETS should be created so everyone has a better health and a better education because these are the true problems of society !

They don't want to talk about real issues and the true realities of life that impact all citizens !

Decisions that impact everybody are the issues they have to talk about, not stupid family values that themselves, even do not have.

First of all, the headline is kinda misleading. The evangelicals are not supporting Gingrich as much as they are Santorum! With that said, all those that are knocking Gingrich need to take the plank from their own eyes. Many of us have grown, transformed throughout our lives and Gingrich seems to be one that has. At least we KNOW much about him, unlike Obama. What were his grades in school? How did he finance his education? Who were his backers? There you (a Republican) go again. What were Obama's grades??? How did he finance his education???? I'm not sure these are top questions asked of any Presidential candidate. Your only twisting the "Where was he born" non-issue (What, the birther issue fizzled so you're rehashing more nonsense?).

Keep with the real issues, not these made up Republican non-issues that are used to purposefully and intentionally distract voters who don't pay attention to real issues.

BTW, interesting term you use to describe President Obama ("jerK"). I define some one who cheats and lies to his wife over and over again, leaves one with cancer, a jerk. Keep bringing up non-issues with Obama, but sweep anti-family values from the Party of Family Values under the rug.

First, southerners in general are the BIGGEST hypocrites on the whole family values subject PERIOD. Every survey done on marriage show SOUTHERNERS have by far the worst record on fidelity in the country - even HOLLYWOOD marriages stand up better than the average southern baptist's marriage (and, New Englanders are the MOST loyal to their partners).

Second, white SCers have HUNDREDS of years of being vicious racist narssistic sociopaths, and traitors. They are the cream of the crop of everything that is ignorant, vicious, meanspirited and vile in what is laughingly called "southern culture". That they would support a man who disgards wives like snot rags, and who utters the most blatant racist crap, and who bullies and shouts down any opposition, is hardly a surprise.

            @ryoushi,

When Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, he said, "I'm giving the South to the Republican Party for forty years." There really is only one issue involved. Prior to that the South was solidly Democratic (though many were of a fiscally conservative brand called Dixiecrats.) Many were so-called Yellow Dog Demnocrats. The switch was overnight and instantaneous and revolved around a single issue that was easily dated. And Johnson gave the South far too much credit on how quickly they would be able to adapt.

But from the larger psychological perspective it is a form of reverse racism. The thinking goes like this: a Black man can never be President because he is too inferior to White men (including me.) If you protract that to a time when we have a Black President, then the thinking becomes: a Black man is President and that pushes me even further down the social ladder. I can only rise by eliminating the Black man above me. It is the philosophical "world turned upside down" paradox.

I think secretly the Conservative wing would like to support Santorum, but they want to be certain he will stand up and continue to grow - like Ronald Reagan did in 1980.

Ronald Reagan wouldn't stand a chance with today's christo-taliban voters. He actually worked with the democrats to get his legislation passed. Today, that's heresy. Reagan also wasn't as filled with hatred and bigotry as Santorum. Reagan was a "western Republican" ... more of a live and let-live branch of the party. Santorum, although from PA, is really a "southern Republican" ... a branch that believes that everyone must live by its rules.

You're right about that. I'm a native southerner. The concern is always with appearances, not substance. As long as someone is married and goes to church on Sunday, they think he/she is a great person. They're willing to overlook unhappy marriages, unhappy spouses, cheating husbands, etc... all in the name of appearances. There's a reason that Faulkner's books are set in the south.

Fear is a powerful motivator for such voters: fear of dark-skinned people, fear of economic collapse, fear of the devil.

But this is the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. Let people remember that when they go to the polls in November.

Let me see if I've got this right! South Carolina GOP Voters would rather choose a man who openly had an affair with his mistress, now wife for many years. A man that divorced his wife to marry his mistress. And South Carolina GOP "Christian" Voters were worried about a "Mormon" that's been married to the same woman for what...25 years? Last time I checked, "Mormons" called their church "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days". Every "Mormon" I've ever met does their best to be ethical, honest, obey the laws, pray only to GOD Almighty and consider "Jesus Christ their Redeemer and Savior."

And before any of you "Bible Thumpers" decry the "Book of Mormon"; let me remind you: Catholics have a "Catholic Version" of the bible and pray to saints instead of Jesus Christ directly; Jews have the Torah; Muslims have the Koran; Baptists, Assembly of God, Pentecostal and Protestants have the "King James Version" of the Bible (the former King of England ordered that one translated by monks); Scientology believe we are all descendents from Aliens; and Lutherans Church was founded by Martin Luther in the what? 1600"s. So, exactly which Bible version do these Southern Carolina "Christians" believe they have the right to deny as "Real"? FYI, it is of God to decide what his and not man to make that decision! You will know Christ's followers by their actions; and, right now South Carolina GOP "Christians" need a lot of praying on their knees; not to mention looking up the definition of "Religious Bigotry."

Newt Gingrich played South Carolina like a Violin. He openly pushed the "Non Release" of Romney's 2011 Tax Return, knowing that taxes aren't even due until April 15th. However, what is truly reprehensible, is now that Newt Gingrich has released his return; the return shows Newt Gingrich to be considered "One of the Wealthiest Men in America". Newt knew his political career wealth outstripped Mitt Romney's hard earned success; however, Newt used this ploy of tax returns openly; while pushing Romney's "Mormon" faith poison at local events. Yes, I have family in S.C. that heard the agenda "first hand". What does this say about Gingrich's character; how can he be trusted to maintain the dignity of the "Oval Office"; if Newt Gingrich won't even maintain the dignity of his campaign. FYI, Mitt Romney is releasing his now completed 2011 Tax Return on Tuesday, along with several past years. What I find interesting is Mitt Romney is showing he has nothing to hide; and investigators have already found hidden income in Newt Gingrich's return. That' been verified folks! Not to mention, Obama only releases one year at a time; and has sealed all his political and personal records from public inspection prior to 2007. Why isn't this the bigger issue here?

What coming to light in the news now is Nancy Pelosi... It appears Nancy Pelosi has some real damaging evidence against Newt Gingrich, while he was Speaker of the House. Newt appears worried Nancy Pelosi will turn that information over to Obama as a weapon against the Gingrich Campaign. In one word.. "Yes".. Nancy Pelosi is Obama's Right Arm.. You can bet anything Nancy Pelosi knows; Obama knows and is waiting for the opportune time to do the most damage!

Let's hope the GOP voters of Florida show more common sense and aren't as easily gild as South Carolina. One final question to South Carolina GOP "Christian" Voters, now that you have chosen an Adulterer as your GOP Presidential Choice; if Newt Gingrich wins the nomination and by some miracle, the Presidency... Will you call Newt Gingrich's Wife "The First Lady" or "The First Mistress".

              #2.47 - Mon Jan 23, 2012 8:45 AM EST

it is a form of reverse racism.

It sounds a lot like the same old, regular style racism, since the predication and purpose is to 'keep blacks down'. ("I'd have a job if they didn't give preferences to black people" is the battle cry, and if it were true, THAT might be a sign of reverse racism. Still, the common complaint – especially among bigots – that life is somehow 'easier' for minorities, is just rationalization. It ain't really true unless you're a fireman living in the late 1970s.)

That 40 years is beginning to look a lot more like 50 to 80.

Alan I kind of thought they would go with Satan-lite Santorum over full blown anti-Christ Gingrich, but I guess you just can never tell what the money worshipping cult Evangelicals will do.

I felt sure after hearing a large sampling of the SC citizens speak over the last couple of days that Rick Santorum would surely win that state. He would never get my vote, but it seemed to me a vote for any of the others, especially Gingrich, would be contrary to their religious convictions. I don't get their logic.

Right you are. Evangelicals voted for the candidate who wasn't fake. All of Newt's sins were proud and on display. Romney is like a well-oiled weather vane. Turns where the wind blows. The problem is that Newt has no broad voter appeal. The voters both parties need to appeal to are like well-oiled weather vanes. If Newt gets the nomination, the general election will be a cake walk for the democrats.

What a bunch of hypocrits most of you "Christians" are. You all talk like you believe the things you supposedly have been taught, but when it actually comes to loving your neighbors you collectively shut the door. I know we have to make most work for the welfare checks they get, but what kind of democracy has hungry/homeless people? Both extremes are stupid. The answer is always in the middle.

Newt will never be the nominee. How about this for a thought. Calista Gingrich as first lady, well well. Well Mrs. First Lady how'd you come to be the first lady? well, I slept with Newt for years before he left his wife with MS, and I really just wanted him to have an open marriage.

If the evangelicals who did vote for Gingrich had voted for someone else instead, Gingrich would have lost. By your own math 29% of his 40% came from evangelicals. 40 - 29 = 11%. If those evangelicals had backed Santorum, he would have won. Heck, if they had backed Perry, who got 0%, he would have won. Evangelicals were the deciding factor.

Evangelicals/Republicans really need to get their priority straight - "Forty-five percent of voters interviewed said that defeating Obama in November was the issue that mattered most to them".

Getting rid of Obama is their number one issue???? HOW ABOUT JOBS?????? HOW ABOUT THE ECONOMY??? Jeez, Republicans don't even lie anymore that they want elected officials that will bring our nation forward.

What has been made clear over the last couple of years, but is now solidified, Republicans in general, and Evangelicals specifically, would rather see America fail and elect a person that goes against all of their "morals" than Obama succeed.

How anti-American has the Republican party become?

I am not expressing any personal animus against Mormons. But it is simply a fact that tens of thousands of ministers and priests (both Protestant and Catholic, both evangelical and traditional) were taught in seminary that ALL Christians accept the Nicene Creed or one of the modern re-wordings that has precisely the same dogma. Mormons donot accept the Nicene Creed or anything even close.

When the Nicene Creed was created, you had lots of Christian splinter groups who were trying to steer the Church in different directions. There were "new" books of testament being written and new interpretations of existing testaments. In order to stop the dispute that was literally destroying the Christian Church, they did two things: 1) The stabilized what was to be in The Bible. They kicked some books out and forbade any new ones to be added. 2) They created a written Creed that summarized the universal beliefs of all Christians. The purpose of the Creed was to have a statement that was never subject to interpretation. It was a take it or leave it line in the sand. You believe all of it or you are not a Christian.

I am not saying that any of it was right or wrong, but it is a historical fact that lives on today. For example Protestants may say the Apostles' Creed and Catholics the Nicene Creed and Evangelicals the more modern wordings, but the meanings are exactly the same regardless of the translation. This is what Christians purport to believe and complete acceptance is the cornerstone of faith for anyone wishing to call himself a Christian. This is precisely why so many Churches persecuted the Mormons until they got majority in Utah.

Tens of thousands of ministers and priests are going to feel compelled to some degree to explain this from the pulpit. That is their job. They are not even particularly participating in politics from their perspective. They are simply defending the pillars of their faith. Some of the faithful will decide that Church and State are not related and will do what they want. I doubt that any would vote for Obama because of it. But if Romney is the eventual candidate it will cause enough conservative Republicans to stay home that Romney cannot realistically expect to win.

No one likes to talk about the religious aspect. It's just too touchy and too difficult to be politically correct. But it is there and it is serious.

And the big news for the last two weeks was Romney at Bain. The big news for the next two weeks will be Romney's tax returns. And for the two weeks after that will be whatever Romney is hiding in his returns, probably the extensive use of Cayman Islands pass-thru shell corporations to avoid taxes. I say this because Bain had a whole division that set these sorts of things up for clients and Romney was on the charters of 190-200 of these shell companies.

Chris, I would argue that when a priest or minister defines the differences between a "christian" or a "mormon", it has nothing to do with "defending the pillars of their faith". I'm a little more skeptical. Of course individuals within a religious organization operate on faith, but for the "institution" of religion, it's more about control than about faith. They are telling their flock that mormons are different from them and therefore wrong in their beliefs or customs. You hit the nail on the head when you said the Creed was a line in the sand: its our way or the highway. In today's climate, that sentiment is VERY political. It's saying there are no other options, no other opinions, no other possibilities that are acceptable even if a Jew, a Mormon, a Buhdist, etc (and yes, even an atheist) doesn't agree with Christian doctrine. Specifically with today's Republican primaries, evangelicals don't think a mormon will (can?) govern following traditional Christian "law". This is very political. They are even using mormonism as a political tactic. Who was it that said mormons aren't christians (can't remember if it was in the Caine or Perry camp)? That's just blatantly political; pointing out that mormons are not christians in this context has nothing to do with faith or offered as a history lesson.

As a Christian looking at this sad choice of possible presidential candidates I say it's a toss up: Does it matter if you're Mormon, baptist, or Catholic if you're not convicted by God? Being a church member or attending mass makes no difference if you act like an atheist the rest of the time.

Seems to me if you don't excuse Newt's behavior, you wouldn't vote for him. There are other choices. And if you like those choices even less and voted for Newt because he's the least of the undesirables, you still made a bad pick.

Remember, picking the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil. (No, I'm not calling every candidate evil, just making a point.)

But Jesus died for all man-kinds sins and the Evangelist see that, so Newt has been cleansed off his wrong doings in the biblical sense and therefore he is a better choice than Romney! After all it was Newt that worked with Clinton to balance a budget and create a surplus that George W Bush destroyed in 1 short year and maybe Newt is the US answer to reign in this debt??

Romney is clearly not the answer as a president and maybe Florida will wake up and back Ron Paul or Santorum and give people time to clear their minds from Romney's Billion Dollar Commercial Propaganda!

If so, then why do you post things like: "the lie that christians actually excuse NEWTs behavior, which we don't." This is very judgmental of Mr. Gingrich's life and very unchristian-like. (Isn't there also something about forgiveness of past sins?)

Liberals, on the other hand, would care less about his personal life and imperfections if he didn't champion the notion that we ALL must live by his/your view of family values and morality. He forced his rightwing agenda on the rest of us all the while he couldn't even live up to the impossible notion of perfection.

So, you shouldn't judge but forgive. Liberals should yell hypocrit as loud as possible and do everything we can to keep your religion out of our government.

We would all be so much better off without all those former racists. Gotta love the bible thumpers though. We can't have gays in the military, but we can have a man as our President that ditched two wives cause they got sick. This country will never progress till we accept the fact that the South has to be either thrown out of the union, or just blown up.

Thinkbit - I have been immersed in this nearly foreign culture since 1997, and here is what I know. They are not evil, but extremely uneducated. The root causes of all our current problems come from uninformed decisions, and that is part of daily life here. You only have to look at the test scores of the public school product churned out to realize that the lights are on, but nobody's home. They credit God for everything good, and blame the Devil for everything evil, even though the perpetrators are themselves.

As for Lincoln, I believe that he did his best to preserve the Union. He wasn't perfect, but he tried. "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union." (Letter to Horace Greeley, August 22, 1862)

It's really no different than liberals blaming God for everthing that's bad and crediting their inner devil for everything thats good, even though the "perpetrators are themselves".

As for living in a foreign culture, you could say the same thing about the drug/alcohol addicts as well as normal people living in NY( where I live). "The root causes of all our current problems come from uninformed decisions, and that is part of daily life here". I completely agree with that.

Ah, yes. I was waiting for that. Of course, the old "liberals are not Christian" thing. ***sigh*** If you say that, then you would have to reject Jesus, a LIBERAL Jew. Look at what Jesus actually said and you will find that he was actually very liberal.

Yea, Mel. She even goes so far as to say liberals are atheists. Even if this were true, which it is just rightwingnut rhetoric, liberals actually care for those around us. We try to help our neighbors, feed the poor, house the indegent, etc. (very christian-like for a bunch of atheists if you ask me). Christian republicans say every man and women for themselves. After all, if they are hungry, poor, homeless, mentally ill, etc they must have done something immoral, wrong, or just lazy to get there.

I don't know how the christian right reconciles their religious beliefs with voting for candidates that blame people in need and then turn them out on the street. I just don't get it.

I wonder if Unhappy is the person I heard in an interview who spat out (and moderators, I'm just quoting here) "I would rather vote for a Jew or a Muslim than vote for a Mormon." as if all three were completely unpleasant alternatives.

Obviously for the extreme right what matters most isn't employment, health, education, infrastructure, individual rights, or national defense. It's all about who is "most Christian" in their particular worldview. Let's hope that God really does favor America, because we're going to need divine intervention to save us if these hateful bigots take over the country. Sinclair Lewis' famous observation is as relevant today as it was back in 1935.

The result of this election have just cemented my view that the evangelicals are some of the dumbest amongst us. Who cares really, whom they vote for and what they think. They are a tiny majority in the country incapable of actually effecting anything on a larger scale.

                      William,

Please don't underestimate the religious right. I'm actually worried too many will and they'll continue to gain political power.

Think about what the Tea Party (which has essentially become the new voice of the religious right) has meant to the political process last year. They've already had a hugely negative impact.

I suggest you look at the demographics of the TEA party. They were always republicans but did not show up on the streets. Many were the old Dems that were betrayed by desegregation. The Tea party was a way to stay in the closet. The religion issue is another story! They believe sinners should be saved from themselves and moral judgements should be made by the state ordained by God.

Don't underestimate the fundamentalist Christians and also don't underestimate the mainstream Christians. You are going to have thousands of ministers and priests who feel compelled to say, from a pulpit, "I was taught in seminary that Mormons are not Christians because they donot accept the Nicene Creed." No one is going to vote for Obama because of this issue, but a lot of Republicans would stay at home because of it.

The bad thing is that it is the GOP that whipped up this religious fervor.

I wonder if the real agenda of the fundamentalist Christian sects is to bring about the "End Time" by electing officials who will plunge the country further into poverty, anarchy and rebellion, and maybe the earth into nuclear holocaust. When the dust settles, I have heard they believe, "the meek shall inherit the earth," so the 1%-ers will be gone in that scenario in any case, and all the Godly types will be living prosperously and running the show. Alternatively, I have heard, that there will be a "Rapture" in which all the Godly will be taken up to heaven (into which it will be as hard for a rich man to enter as a camel to pass through a needle's eye), leaving the world to the unGodly sinners. And as we die off, we will go straight to hell to suffer eternal torment, because the "Rapture" was a one-time-only offer. So, in the second scenario, it is not a good idea to have political opinions that promote the betterment of citizens (the welfare state) because they might get rich and have a hard time at the "Rapture". Thus, the poor and the socialists will be saved in spite of themselves..

I am old enough to remember 1979 (Carter) and Ron Reagan later. What were interest rates in 1979 please, and unemployment rates, please? What were the numbers by the end of the 80s, please? By the way, Reagan and Maggy Thatcher destroyed communism. Reagan lowered taxes and raised them when economy picked up. Was he the sharpest intellectual? Certainly, not, but thousands of people stood in line for several hours in the 100 degree heat to waive their final farewell to him several years ago.

If Obama defeats any of them in a landslide it will be very sad. It might mean that America has changed for good and European social democracy will look like a "conservative right" in the nearest future.

                          Final comment, if I may.

                            RE: your post #8.3

When I stated that "I'm lov'in it", in my post #8, I did not mean to imply that I'm am not worried about the GOP reclaiming the White House, Congress included. I am plenty worried, as are you. The bottom line, in this election, is that the U.S. Economy WILL drive the election; it is imperative we get a lower number on unemployment, currently at 8.5%, as measured by the U2 standard. I feel perhaps it may come down just a bit but, my worry, will it be enough? To be honest, I don't believe ANYONE can fix the "jobs" picture. We are probably in for a long slow slide in our economic futures. Sure hope I am wrong, but I see no viable program to restore all the manufacturing, and peripherally related jobs lost, not only in the Midwest and Northeast but throughout the country. The jobs being created today will not even support an individual's middle-class lifestyle, let alone a family of four. Ron Paul is also correct, to a fault, when he says the U.S. is bankrupt! We are, and have been, for many years -- perhaps 30 or more! On the other hand, I trust the comprehensive "wisdom" of the citizens of this country when it comes to picking the best candidate to elect for president. If this "wisdom" prevails, Obama will be reelected by a narrow margin, HOPEFULLY!

I saw this coming. Newt can be forgiven for his cheating. He converted to Catholocism, which is still Christian. By definition, LDS, by not accepting the Niecene and Apostle's Creed, the basis of faith by which the Christian Church exixts, is not Christian. The Evangelicals cannot accept a non Christian as their nominee.

Yes, the LDS folks say they are "Christian" because they "believe in Jesus Christ" but that does not make them "Christian" any more than the fact that I believe there was a man named Mohammed who claimed to be a prophet of god make me a Muslim.

Apparently you've never lived in the South, particularly around Baptists (or you haven't heard the BS out of John Hagee's mouth for decades). Baptists hate Catholics, and say all kinds of unChristian things about them, short of saying they have horns and a tail. Baptists, Presbyterians and Methodists were the foundation of hte KKK, which outwardly loathed blacks, foreigners, Catholics and Jews.

This is playing in churches all over the south.

In addition, the media has made it their mission for the next couple of weeks to get Romney to release his tax returns. They are actually using footage of his father releasing 12 years of his tax returns and advocating for requiring such of all candidates. If you go by the amount of heat he has taken, there must be a lot that he doens't want people to see beyond the only paying at a 15% rate. If you look at Bain, they have a whole division that sets up pass-thru corporations in the Caymans to avoid paying US taxes. My guess is that Romnney has millions tied up in these quasi-legal tax loopholes. This would be nuclear politics.

And Romney has to fight the fundamentalist groups who are, in effect, saying "We will support a Roman Catholic before Romney." And fight off Gingrich, Santorum, and Paul and everything they can throw at him. And fight the anti-Romneyt mainstream ministers and priests. Mormons don't "believe in " Jesus Christ. THey accept him as their Savior and try to follow him. That's what being a Christian is, not simply saying you believe a man name Jesus existed.

"Yes, the LDS folks say they are "Christian" because they "believe in Jesus Christ" but that does not make them "Christian" any more than the fact that I believe there was a man named Mohammed who claimed to be a prophet of god make me a Muslim."

To be considered Muslim, you follow the believe and follow the muslim teachings... To be considered Christian you believe and FOLLOW the teachings of Jesus.... Are there Mormons that are true Christians I believe so...

One of my friends knows AUTOCAD-2005 like the back of his hand, I swear he could probably teach classes on the program. He can build building drawings and everything.... but he didn't go to school for it. He applied for a government job but he didn't have a "paper" saying that he knows the program... I do not like how the Government dictates who we are, who we can or cannot marry in order to be legal.

Bob, you are entitled to your beliefs (as are the Mormons and the Muslims and everyone else.) But just because they call themselves Christian, doe not make it so. The reject the trinity and the foundations of Christian doctrine as found in the Niecene and Apostle's Creed. I can wear a fez and call myself a Shriner. That doesnt make it so. By the definition of all other Christian denominations, the LDS church is not Christian. This is why the Southern Evangelicals are rejection Romney.

Oh really you have asked all 38,000 Christian denominations in the United states alone if Mormons are Christians.....? Oh, I didn't think so... Please do not generalize when you are trying to submit YOUR beliefs stating that it is a fact. When you talk to the 38,000 Ministers or Preachers or Fathers Or what ever you want to call them and they tell you that they do not believe Mormons are Christians, I will believe you but until then, your words are nothing to me.

Just a memory. Until John F Kennedy was elected the USA had never had a Catholic for president. So, maybe a Mormon can be president. Who knows. I certainly don't.

The LDS Church teaches only Christian truths, and its members are noted for their honesty, kindness, care for humanity, and testimony of Christ. Everyone who has had a Mormon neighbor knows this to be true. They try their best to follow His example. You rural South Carolinians are so jaded by your Evangelical ministers that you chose a morally flawed philanderer over a family man known for his integrity. Talk all you want about forgiveness and Newt's redemption, but it is plain to see by the exit polls of this primary that it boiled down to one thing: Mormonism. Half of South Carolinians chose to defy the Constitution by making religion a test for public office. For that, you should be ashamed, and I think you will be in 10 days when the forward-thinking state of Florida goes out to vote.

If you've never been to an Evangelical church service, you would be amazed at what they think of Catholics. I can only imagine how much more they hate Romney as a Mormon to choose Gingrich a Baptist who converted to Catholicism. If anything it tells us that Romney's religion is still in play.

They really are tearing each other apart. From the point of view of a Progressive, I'm happy to see the pandemonium. But as an American it's hard to watch a candidate for public office be voted against based on his chosen religion. These nasty campaign politics are ruining our country. There's too much focus on personal issues and trying to tear opponents down, rather than presenting themselves as the best candidate.

Dr. Ray-having spent many years living in Arizona, here's what I can tell you I know about Mormons: they are kind and courteous and helpful to your face, but if you're not a Mormon too, the second your back is turned they become some of the worst two-faced back biters you'll EVER meet. Truly disgusting and among the smuggest "superior" holy rollers there are.

Jan, maybe this will help with your knowledge of Mormons. I don't trust them running the country anymore than I do any other wingnut, they all have an agenda beyond the Constitutional bounds of what the Presidents job was legally meant to be, they each want to impose their belief system on everyone. Each time we get a new wingnut in office we get a whole new "WAR" on something that manifests itself in the form of more laws and less individual freedoms.

I can think of numerous reasons not to vote for Romney but his being a Mormon is NOT one of them. I will take a Mormon anytime over some hypocrite born again fundy so called Christian. Gingrich is a perfect match for the fundy vote -- an angry hypocrite with a bug yap using religion to promote his con game.

Romney came across as a Yankee elitist. While Gingrich "acted" like a scorned (by the northern, elitist press)southern rebel . Remember, this is the state that fired on Ft. Sumter, and Gingich as a Georgian honed on on S Carolina's separatist leanings. Enough said!!

You can just as easily state that the 2 out of 5 voters who don't care or have a preference for a shared religious or moral viewpoint also as being bigots.

A bigot is "an obstintate believer who is intolerant of others." I witness, read of and know of Democrats and Republicans, conservatives or liberals, men or women or black, white or Hispanics that clearly match and epitomize bigotry.

The key is what is "intolerance." Living in peaceful coexistence in a society, with no physical harm and verbal abuse does not a bigot define.

Fastest growing religion in the world so something must be attractive to those joining the church or maybe its just the lure of free Donny and Marie memorabilia. That has always been a nice selling point for us. Oh yeah and were partnering with Target and opening smaller in store churches to bring in more cult members.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints or "Mormons" are Christians, hence the name of our Church.

Those of other faiths may tell you differently in order to promote their church as "the true church" or defeat their prefered candidate. Do some research on your own if you want to know. Just remember, if you ask a Catholic Priest, you'll get a Catholic answer. Ask a Baptist Minister and you'll get a Baptist answer, ask "Voted McCain" and you'll get his personal view. You get the idea. If you believe in and pray to a higher power and truely want to know for yourself and no one else, get on your knees and, with true intent, pray to your Savior Jesus Christ and ask him if "Mormons" are Christians.

                                  Peace to all of you.

We don't usually get points for cheating, lying, infidelity, pride, arrogance and outright ugly behavior in trashing his first two wives, whom he cheated on, when they got sick - and I know that there's someone out there who will say that all Catholics have to do is go to confession...no, the deal is, the penitent's absolution is totally based on "a firm purpose of amendment." In other words, you have to promise not to do again those things for which you are asking God's forgiveness...anyone see any firm purpose here? It's not a joke, it's not a game, and no one is fooling God. Someone needs to wise up Callista that it's only a matter of time.

Why do you hold Callista in higher regard? Remember this adulteress is the second half to Newt's unacceptable behavior.

In fact, I'd say you're anti-man (mis-andronist) if you only blame the man for cheating. It takes an unethical, selfish woman to be the one to satisfy the male-searching adulterer.

Oh, my, where did all that anger come from? I am not anti-man, on the contrary have been happily married to my one and only husband for 33 years. I'm not defending Callista at all...my intent was to say that if she thinks Newt's cheated on "the others" but it won't happen to her, she's kidding herself. A serial philanderer never learns...and any woman who solaces herself that she's the one he really loves is one sick puppy, for whom I am shedding no tears, believe me. Cheating is cheating.

Bingo. And he will do the same to this country once he reaches his ultimate ego plateau.

Hey Sue........wake up! We are talking politics here!! Any Politics in the bible? And only the Catholics go to Confessionals.....sit in little boxes to confess their sins and how many of those priests use that personal info to prop up the guilt so the collection plate gets filled??

"...and the sign said anyone walking come in kneel down and pray, when they passed around the plate at the end of it all I didn't have a penny to pay....so I got me a pen and a paper and made up my own little sign, said thank you lord for being by me I am obliged for doing fine...."

I'm a non-practicing catholic but I do know that divorce is not recognized in the catholic church. So did Gingrich have his first 2 marriages annulled? If not, then how in the eyes of the church can he be married to his 3rd wife?

WOW, looks like the liberal elite media has pronounced this win as the biggest news of the decade... imaging South Carolina now is the leader of the nation and single handedly picks the preseeedant...... I guess it is true "da south shall rise again".. but I digress, you gotta love those bible thumpers.... all you need to do is "find Jesus" and all your past sins are not only forgiven, they are forgotten!!!! but that is not too hard for the inbred south carolinians..... Newt was a jerk in the 80"s and remains so....

                                  justforcatholics.org/a21.htm

From this I learned that neither Gingrich nor Santorum are Christians.

And earlier reports from the evangelical camp claim that Romney is a member of a cult.

So that leaves Ron Paul as their guy.

                                  Evangelicals are a strange breed.

The vast majority of them in South Carolina are two faced hypocrites.

That link is an anti-Catholic diatribe. It is simply someone else saying what they believe is correct and everyone else is wrong, in this case all Catholics. The Jehovah Witnesses and Baptists too are openly anti-Catholic. But like you said, they are a strange breed.

Mike, the site and page you list is full of bullsh*t. It's the same erroneous garbage perpetuated since the Reformation by anyone who rejects the first Christian denomination, the Roman Catholic Church. The webpage is full of misconstrued BS about Catholicism, half-truths and dangerous in that it undermines the real validity of Catholicsim, but twisted and spat on by this self-important author.

By definition of "evangelical," it refers only to born-again Protestants. Neither Catholics or a Mormon can be grouped in that demographic.

Of course it's full of bullsh*t any thinking person knows that. It would be humorous if as you write, and I agree, it weren't so "dangerous".
