Obama to offer economic blueprint in State of the Union

WASHINGTON -- Vilified by the Republicans who want his job, President Barack Obama will stand before the nation Tuesday night determined to frame the election-year debate on his terms, promising his State of the Union address will offer an economic blueprint that will "work for everyone, not just a wealthy few."

In a video released Saturday to millions of campaign supporters, Obama said he will concentrate on four areas designed to restore economic security for the long term: manufacturing, energy, education, job training and a "return to American values." The release came the same day as the South Carolina primary, where four candidates competed in the latest contest to determine Obama's general election rival.

The prime-time speech will be not just a traditional pitch about the year ahead. It will be perhaps Obama's biggest stage to make a sweeping case for a second term.

"We can go in two directions," the president said in the video. "One is toward less opportunity and less fairness. Or we can fight for where I think we need to go: building an economy that works for everyone, not just a wealthy few."

That line of argument about income equality is emerging as a defining theme of the presidential race, as Republicans are in their own fierce battle to pick a nominee to challenge Obama in the fall.

By notifying the millions of supporters on his email list, Obama gave advance notice to his Democratic base and trying to generate an even larger audience for Tuesday's address.

Obama's preview did not mention national security. He is not expected to announce new policy on that front in a speech dominated by the economy — the top concern of voters.

Obama is expected to offer new proposals to make college more affordable and to ease the housing crisis still slowing the economy, according to people familiar with the speech. He will also promote unfinished parts of his jobs plan, including the extension of a payroll tax cut soon to expire.

His policy proposals will be less important than what he hopes they all add up to: a narrative of renewed American security. Obama will try to politically position himself as the one leading that fight for the middle class, with an overt call for help from Congress, and an implicit request for a second term from the public.

The timing comes as the nation is split about Obama's overall job performance. More people than not disapprove of his handling of the economy, he is showing real vulnerability among the independent voters who could swing the election, and most Americans think the country is on the wrong track.

So his mission will be to show leadership and ideas on topics that matter to people: jobs, housing, college, retirement security.

Vision for re-election
The foundation of Obama's speech is the one he gave in Kansas last month, when he declared that the middle class was a make-or-break moment and railed against "you're on your own" economics of the Republican Party. His theme then was about a government that ensures people get a fair shot to succeed.

That speech spelled out the values of Obama's election-year agenda. The State of the Union will be the details.

The White House sees the speech as a clear chance to outline a vision for re-election, yet carefully, without turning a national tradition into an overt campaign event.

On national security, Obama will ask the nation to reflect with him on a momentous year of change, including the end of the war in Iraq, the killing of al-Qaida terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and the Arab Spring protests of peoples clamoring for freedom.

But it will all be secondary to jobs at home.

In a winter season of politics dominated by his Republican competition, Obama will have a grand stage to himself, in a window between Republican primaries. He will try to use the moment to refocus the debate as he sees it: where the country has come, and where he wants to take it.

In doing so, Obama will come before a divided Congress with a burst of hope because the economy — by far the most important issue to voters — is showing life.

The unemployment rate is still at a troubling 8.5 percent, but at its lowest rate in nearly three years. Consumer confidence is up. Obama will use that as a springboard.

The president will try to draw a contrast of economic visions with Republicans, both his antagonists in Congress and the candidates for the Republican presidential nomination.

Despite low expectations for legislation this year, Obama will offer short-term ideas that would require action from Congress.

His travel schedule following his speech, to politically important regions, offers clues to the policies he was expected to unveil.

Both Phoenix and Las Vegas have been hard hit by foreclosures. Denver is where Obama outlined ways of helping college students deal with mounting school loan debt. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Detroit are home to a number of manufacturers. And Michigan was a major beneficiary of the president's decision to provide billions in federal loans to rescue General Motors and Chrysler in 2009.

For now, the main looming to-do item is an extension of a payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits, both due to expire by March. An Obama spokesman called that the "last must-do item of business" on Obama's congressional agenda, but the White House insists the president will make the case for more this year.

If anything, Republicans say Obama has made the chances of cooperation even dimmer just over the last several days. He enraged Republicans by installing a consumer watchdog chief by going around the Senate, which had blocked him, and then rejected a major oil pipeline project the GOP has embraced.

Obama is likely, once again, to offer ways in which a broken Washington must work together. Yet that theme seems but a dream given the gridlock he has been unable to change.

The State of the Union atmosphere offered a bit of comity last year, following the assassination attempt against Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. And yet 2011 was a year of utter dysfunction in Washington, with the partisanship getting so bad that the government nearly defaulted as the world watched in embarrassment.

The address remains an old-fashioned moment of national attention; 43 million people watched it on TV last year. The White House website will offer a live stream of the speech, promising graphics and other bonuses for people who watch it there, plus a panel of administration officials afterward with questions coming in through Twitter and Facebook.

BREAKING NEWS: In Iowa---Zachary Edwards, Democrat operative, was just arrested for trying to use/steal Secretary of State Schultz's "identity", and the "identity" of Schultz's brother. Zachary Edwards was an Obama staffer during Obama's 2007 and 2008 campaigns, and was Democrat Party "organizer" of a multi-state campaign, for the Democrat Party, to elect Obama in 2008. This is a MUST READ! You can find the news story at "hotair.com".

Three years into his administration, and NOW he has an economic plan? I guess this is why so many consider him to be the worst President in history.

Blah Blah Blah Republicans are all the same. Worst president ever huh? The right wing is killing America with obstruction in the House and Senate. Every time Obama has any plan, the right kill it, all in the name of keeping him a one term president. Mitch McConnell has even said those exact words. Stop listening to Fox news and do the research yourself.

Maybe the republicans you speak of are pouting but I can guarantee you that if these same republicans had said to President Obama in 2010 that "We Won" and "It is time for you to move to the back of the bus", democrats and especially the more liberal ones would be raising hell. If Obama wants cooperation then may he should realize that you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

LOL! at far right wing republicans. it is your party that has caused every single bit of this mess.. We didn't have any real budget concerns in 2000... but by 2007 after 6 years of a completely republican controlled congress and presidency the economy started tanking hard and fast. Everyone with common sense knows it takes a good 2 - 6 years to see any real affect of most any legislature. So using some common sense it pretty safe ot say that the small but definite improvements in this economy were the direct results of a democratic congress from 2006 - 2010 and presidency from 2008 - present

Then you have the audacity to offer us Newt, Romney, Santorum, Bachman Perry as possible presidential candidates to lead us going forward.

hey I have another good one for you right wing lunatics.... Name the last Republican president who reduced the deficit, name the last republican president to reduce the size of government"

I'll give you a hint you won't find one

If you vote for a republican you are flushing this once great nation down the drain and creating a plutocracy that will screw every single last one of ya's

On a percentage basis Obama increased the debt by 41%. However, Reagan increased the debt by 189%, and Bush increased the debt by 89% over his presidency.

Obama inherited a $8 trillion dollar debt over Bush's 8 years as President plus a low unemployment of about 6.6% and 4 years with the Democratic Congress. Here it is 3 years with Obama and near $16 trillion dollar deficit. Obama has out done Bush 2 to 1. He should be proud of himself because his cronies and cult of Libs are all for him to Destroy this country. GO DEMS for BUST!

For doing the opposite of what those who voted for them thought they was going to do.

Best thing I heard all year was this morning on the morning news. They showed clips of Romney giving his stump speech... Romney said the following: "Obama didn't create this recession" and he followed up with "Obama's plans are working and getting us out of the recession". No crap. So again. Why would I vote for anyone but Obama.

Why would those of you full of Greed, Envy, and Sloth want to 'Change' that???

Obama inherited a $8 trillion dollar debt over Bush's 8 years as President

Correction - The National Debt was at 5 trillion when Bush Jr. took office in 2001, and his administration added 4.9 trillion dollars of debt, so Obama inherited a 9.9 trillion dollar national debt when he took office. Republicans controlled Congress and the White House for 6 years, from 2001 to 2007, so they are responsible for most of the 4.9 trillion of debt during the Bush Jr. administration.

I've noticed that when the Republicans gained control of the House in 2011, they didn't do much to reduce deficits and nothing to create jobs, instead they continued doing what they'd done during the Bush Jr. administration. BTW, those Bush tax cuts are still in effect, with predictable budget busting results.

So that makes Obama responsible for the 5 trillion in debt since he took office.

BTW, those Bush Tax cuts expired in December of 2010 so why are they still here?

cm -

Actually, no, the republicans are not responsible for most of the additional debt tacked on during the Bush years as the democrats went on a spending spree once they got control of the purse strings. Deficits under the republicans averged less than $250 billion per year, with the average being between $100 to 200 billion in the first couple of years - and that is with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq being added in (even when war spending is not included in the budget, it still shows up on the deficit). The democrat-controlled Congress during the last 2 years of the Bush administration averaged 3 times that amount ($750 billion) in deficit spending.

Perhaps you should learn to look at all sources of information instead of just the liberal propaganda.

CM: Just for the sake of clarification, the Republicans did not control the Senate from 2001 to 2007. In June of 2001 the majority switched hands when Jim Jeffords jumped parties to join the Dems. That lasted until early January of 2003. So fallacy #1 corrected. The debt record for the Repubs is not good, as you state. Their avarice spending increased the debt on an average of $612B per year (by your numbers) which is terrible. But let's take a look at what the community organizer has done in his three years. Let's discount 2009, because that belongs to Bush, except for approx $265B that was part of the stimulus package spent before the end of the 2009 fiscal year. So we're looking at all of 2010 ($1.3T deficit) and 2011 ($1.3T deficit) plus the $265B, which equates to about $2.9 trillion of accumulated debt, from October of 2009 to October of 2011 (end of the fiscal year). That's 1.45 trillion in debt per year, more than twice the rate of Bush. So who's irresponsible when it comes to this debt???? Fallacy #2 corrected.

Finally, the Republicans control one half of one branch of this government, the House. Democrats control the Senate and the WH. Do the math, the Dems can kill any legislation presented by the other party, as evidenced by numerous pieces of legislation designed to trim the deficit that have been sent to the Senate and died on the floor, i.e. the Ryan bill. Fallacy #3 corrected.

Obama to offer economic blueprint in State of the Union

What's the point! As long as the rupukians are in the house they will stop him from even getting this off the ground.

I will vote for Obama or Ron Paul before I would vote for any of the other thieving politicians running this time.

I feel the repukians have shown to us just how ugly and bigoted thy are in not wanting a black president, attacking gay and black people all the time, and this is just wrong.

Obama tired to get things done in America, but it was the repukians that prevented him from accomplishing anything.

Government has gotten too big, and it's time to start tossing all of them out of politics altogether and to the curb.

We also need to put politicians on hourly salaries that the people get to vote on, not these crooked politicians, and we need to put a salary cap on their wages as well and end all their pension benefits as well.

Rick: think you're a little bit mixed up. Clinton didn't declare two wars, keep them off the books, enact further tax cuts and spend every bit of the surplus he inherited and dive us headlong into one of the worst recessions in our history. That was all the work of he who must not be named (by Republicans) George Bush. We're coming out of that now...I know that just drives the Republicans insane...but cheer up...you'll have your shot at destruction again in 2017.

The two major points of our economic recovery that most people remain stupidly totally ignorant of or are too politically opposed to admit are these:

1:) The balloon bursting on Wall Street headed us towards not only a "recession", but a "DEPRESSION". President Obama's strategies faithfully prevented that collapse from rendering this country to the 1930's total failure financially as a country. It could have very easily collapsed that far.

2:) From the start of the 1929' stock market failure, then totally collapsing in 1931 it took this country 10 years to recover just partially, and another 10 years to recover to a financial health prior to 1929.

a 3rd point to ponder is that there was certainly no guarantee that McCain if elected, or any other Repug candidate (which if we can compared that term's choices with this year's applicants of fools, well) would have produced any more other miracle rapid growth scheme to resurrect the country without starving the working and/or middle classes of America.

Even under plan's instituted to lessen the effect of the impact on the lower classes, the gap between those classes and the level attained from the amount of profit the wealthier elite grasped during and after the collapse grew 250%.

Blaming the current administration of incompetence is totally foolish and biased. It had total chaos laid upon it when good old Bush walked out of office leaving us with the mess he allowed and created, and that's the best example of a Republican run two term president in today's republican run engine as the Party of NO. The administration may have made mistakes, errors or miscalculations, but they did not allow the collapse to impactt he nation like it very well could have. There may be some negative points hyped by the media, the Solandra bankruptcy etc, but these are lesser issues when compared with the threats faced by the nation after the Wall Street collapse.

One thing "IS" for certain and a fact, under a Republican administration hypothetically inserted back in 2008, the nation would have faced a lot harder impact on the lower caste than it did under Obama.

What about 2012? Without conditions, the President promised that the 2012 federal deficit will not exceed 229.27 billion dollars. To keep the President's promise the federal government will have to spend more than 1 trillion dollars less in 2012 then it did in 2011. This is not 1 trillion in spending cuts over a ten year period but more than 1 trillion dollars in spending in less than a year starting right now. The President's promise was not conditional the countries economic stats not any action of congress. I want the President to explain how his promise regarding today's economy is going to be kept.

Freshieee, I heard the President, on television, state that deficit spending was bad, and he vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first administration. I have heard others repeat hearing that the President made this vow. Earlier, when he was still a senator, senator Obama refused to for an increase in the Federal Debt limit. Campaigning for the Presidency, Obama appeared to be a fiscal conservative. The last full year of the previous administration was 2008. From the Internet, the official figure for the federal deficit that I copied down was 458.55 billion dollars. The last full year of President Obama's first term is 2012. So for the President to fulfill his vow to the American people, the 2012 federal deficit must not exceed 229.27 billion dollars. To do this the federal government will have to spend much more than 1 trillion dollars less in 2012 than it did in 2011. I want the President to explain how he is going to keep his promise to the American people. I would also like the President to explain what it is going to actually cost the American tax payers and how long it is going to take to pay back all of this money that the federal government has been borrowing during his administration.

No actually I'm not mixed up. Clinton insisted that a beefed up version of the Community Reinvestment Act be amended to Gramm-Leach-Bliley which encouraged the lending institutions to make high risk loans. Clinton ignored Brooksley Born's warnings about the derivatives market being unregulated. The amount of derivatives reached 680 trillion dollars. And I did mean 680 trillion which is more than 10 times the GNP of all the countries in the world.

On September 15, 2008, Lehman Brothers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection following the massive exodus of most of its clients, drastic losses in its stock, and devaluation of its assets by credit rating agencies. The filing marked the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history,[4] and is thought to have played a major role in the unfolding of the late-2000s global financial crisis

Yet you liberals insist on making it about the war.

I heard the speech. Here's what I got out of it. I inherited a mess. The ship of state was on it's side and dead in the water. We pumped most of the crap left by the former captain and got the ship upright. Sounds like a pretty good accurate picture to me having been aboard and watched Captain Bush league.

Barack Obama's 32 Month Report Card

              by Rich Carroll

Mr. Hope and Change wants to create a nation humbled; humiliated, casting-aside capitalism and individual freedoms for one where we the people are government controlled. This would be a system that genuflects mediocrity, steals personal aspiration and opportunity, and punishes those who strive to succeed.

A gallon of regular gasoline the day Obama was inaugurated was $1.79 on average in the U.S. Today that price is $3.59, a 100.6% increase. The number of food stamp recipients has risen since Obama took office from 31,983,716 to 43,200,878, a 35.1% jump. Long term unemployment soared 146.2% during the same 32 month period from 2,600,000 to 6,400,000. Staggering hope and change isn't it?

American citizens living in poverty have risen 9.5% from 39,800,000 to 43,600,000, and the number of unemployed has jumped almost 25% from 11,616,000 to 14,485,000 as of August 31, 2011. The number of unemployed blacks has risen from 12.6% at the end of George Bush's term to 15.8% today, a 25.4% increase, and finally, our national debt is up 34.4% from 10.627 trillion to 14,278 trillion *

Keep these figures in mind as we recount the number of firsts for this presidency:

First President to refuse to show a valid birth certificate.

First President to apply for college aid as a foreign student, then deny he was a foreigner.

First President to have a social security # from a state in which he never lived.

First President to preside over a cut to the credit rating of the United States

First President to violate the War Powers Act.

First President to be held in contempt of court for illegally obstructing oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico .

First President to defy a Federal Judges court order to cease implementing the Health Care Reform Law.

First President to require Americans to purchase a product from a 3rd party.

First President to spend a trillion dollars on shovel-ready jobs and later admit there was no such thing as shovel-ready jobs.

First President to abrogate bankruptcy law to turn over control of companies to his union supporters.

First President to by-pass Congress and implement the Dream Act through executive fiat.

Obama made a bad situation worse. His stimulus bill did not create one job and added a trillion to our deficit.

Gary you lie. According to a report by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, the stimulus increased the number of employed by somewhere between 1.4 million and 3.3 million. Also, when the stimulus was signed, we were already sitting at over $8 trillion in debt, almost all of which came from your conservative messiah's war in Iraq and his prescription drug plan - all put in to place with LESS money coming in because God forbid Donald Trump needs another tax break.

Time to Man Up and accept responsibility.

You couldn't be more right. It's time to man up and accept responsibility that it was failed CONSERVATIVE policies that put the recession in place.

No president in history has attempted 3 years into his term to blame the other guy for his problems.

No president in history has inherited a mess THIS bad from his predecessor. Again, man up and take responsibility - that is what the Republican Party preaches right?

I wish everyone would take a long, serious look at the decisions made by our so called elected crooks, from both parties, over that last 30 years. Both parties are to blame, plain and simple. But one thing I would like to know is how you fiance two wars with tax cuts?

Wars cost money, costs loss of life, etc etc. Why was the cost of these two wars not on the books? Why isn't the costs of not only the wars, the repeal of certain bills, adding of certain bills, etc brought into account. In the last thrity years the bill came due in 2007. And the economic mess started, and has continued.

No one person, sitting in the White House could fix thirty years of screwups fix this mess in three years. Plain and simple. What would McCain have done? Based on his speechs, his comments, I think we would be in three wars. However, everyone can make up their own minds on this. Both sides lie, cheat, steal, and tell you what they think you want to hear.

Forget your party lines, think about what is good for the majority of the Americans. How many want to continue to see starving children? How many want their parents, grandparents die because of no medical help?

Do some research on what may work, and what won't work. Which person is trying to do something that may work? Which person is hindering that process? Which person is putting the wrong ideas out there? That is what people should be interested in, not the political BS you post here.

Actually, Obama created more net jobs in three years, than Bush did in eight. Sorry, but you math doesn't add up. Especially when you consider the stimulus plan was 40% tax breaks.

Im not even a republican supporter- but seriously - i wish people would stop blaming the previous administration - it is the past. I say this to the republican canidates as well - if the mess is too big for you to handle, dont run. I dont care how bad the previous guy messed things up - not my concern - my concern is what are you going to do to fix it - and so far - our president hasnt done a good job of doing that. Ill give that the congress hasnt helpped - but to a point - you had a supermajority the first 2 years - if you cant get something done with that - then you dont deserve to try again. If you get hired for a job, do you get a pass 3 years later because the person before did a really bad job? No - show me results or show me your back as your walking out the door.

This election im not sure who i will end up voting for - i wont vote for President Obama again, that was a mistake i cant take back - but i most certainly wont vote for that nit-wit Newt either. I may go Romney if he gets the nod simply because he isnt the other two - but the way i see it - regardless we are kinda of grabbing our ankles with any one of the three - sad that we dont have an actual leader wanting to carry the team, we are just left with the scrub back-ups who say they want to carry the team, then do nothing but complain about how hard it is and how its someone elses fault.

Thats a really dumb way to look at how the stimulus created jobs. Most of the money went to Bailout banks, GM, and states. You don't measure how many jobs are created by the full amount of the stimulus but by how much of that was destined to job creation. Another incomplete truth for the right.

And why are you using a link to October 2009???????

You cant really measure the effect of the stimulus with just 5 months of it becoming law.

You people lie!!!!! They even say at the end of the article that they are uncertain because its still early to tell. LIAR!!!!

You think we are like most people on fox news who are constantly being lied to with incomplete truths?

Obama made a bad situation worse. His stimulus bill did not create one job and added a trillion to our deficit.

Gary you lie. According to a report by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, the stimulus increased the number of employed by somewhere between 1.4 million and 3.3 million. Also, when the stimulus was signed, we were already sitting at over $8 trillion in debt, almost all of which came from your conservative messiah's war in Iraq and his prescription drug plan - all put in to place with LESS money coming in because God forbid Donald Trump needs another tax break.

Actually the final debt number of the end of Bush last budget was more than 8 trillion.

The National Debt as of 09/28/2001 = $5,807,463,412,200.06 ... as of his last budget year 09/30/2009 = $11,909,829,003,511.75 ... thats a little better than doubling it, or increasing by $6.1 Trillion

People on the right seem to also forget that he left a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit.

Most people on the right always seem to ignore this.

Most people on the right look at deficits from the last few years and see that in 2008 Bush had a 400 billion deficit and then all of a sudden Obama comes in and its 1.3 trillion.

And that's what they call Obama spending!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me tell you it is not!!!!!!

I love how you people justify getting screwed by the government by saying "oh yeah well it felt better when Obama screwed me than it did when Bush screwed me", or vica versa. If you honestly think that we can keep letting Washington DC "improve" our economy, then just go ahead and move to Greece and you will have a 2 year head start on the rest of us.

Evil Monkey, lots of monkeying around with the numbers, pun intended. Many claim Obama created jobs. Why is the unemployment rate higher than when Bush left office? 3 years later. More than enough time for his "reforms" to take place.

Reagan inherited a much worse mess from Carter ( and in fairness we must include LBJ, Nixon, and Ford) than Obama did from Bush. He didn't whine or make excuses, he had a bold vision for the country. The result was the greatest boost in economic growth since WW2 ended.

FDR also inherited a mess and I have yet to read a quote from him blaming Herbert Hoover.

You want to root for your guy, be my guest. But Obama needs to show some results before November

Most of the comments here are a clear demonstration of our unrealistic expectation of instant gratification. It is unrealistic to expect anyone to fix a problem in 3 years that it took 30 years to create. Especially with the level of co-operation that this President has received from the congress which is supposed to be helping him. The only "solutions" I have seen from the Republicans is tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations and massive spending cuts in Social Programs. It has been abundantly demonstrated by the implementation of those policies during the Bush administration that those "solutions" don't work.

The final verdict is in on the 2009 stimulus bill, and it’s pretty clear that the entire thing was one massive boondoggle:

When the Obama administration releases a report on the Friday before a long weekend, it’s clearly not trying to draw attention to the report’s contents. Sure enough, the “Seventh Quarterly Report” on the economic impact of the “stimulus,” released on Friday, July 1, provides further evidence that President Obama’s economic “stimulus” did very little, if anything, to stimulate the economy, and a whole lot to stimulate the debt.

The report was written by the White House’s Council of Economic Advisors, a group of three economists who were all handpicked by Obama, and it chronicles the alleged success of the “stimulus” in adding or saving jobs. The council reports that, using “mainstream estimates of economic multipliers for the effects of fiscal stimulus” (which it describes as a “natural way to estimate the effects of” the legislation), the “stimulus” has added or saved just under 2.4 million jobs — whether private or public — at a cost (to date) of $666 billion. That’s a cost to taxpayers of $278,000 per job.

In other words, the government could simply have cut a $100,000 check to everyone whose employment was allegedly made possible by the “stimulus,” and taxpayers would have come out $427 billion ahead.

You must be a millionaire and must not use their services. Are you hearing the stories of how some kindergarten teachers have close to 40 students in their classrooms? or how 2011 was record year of police officers killed in the line of duty? why do you think that is?no funding to hire more police officers.
Also you heard the story of how firefighters let houses burn because they cant afford to put them down and its cheaper to just let it burn. You are mistaken if you think that's what the bailout was used for.

Did you read the conclusion of the report? Or did you just go with the opinionated facts of the blog???

This report continues the Council of Economic Advisers’ assessment of the economic
impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the response of the economy as of
                the first quarter of 2011.

The analysis indicates that the Recovery Act has played a significant role in the
turnaround of the economy that has occurred over the past two years. Real GDP reached its low
point in the second quarter of 2009 and has been growing solidly since then, in large part because
of the tax cuts and spending increases included in the Act. Employment, after falling
dramatically, began to grow again on a sustained basis through 2010. As of the first quarter of
2011, the report estimates that the Recovery Act raised employment by 2.4 to 3.6 million jobs
relative to what it otherwise would have been.

As discussed in previous ARRA reports, measuring the impact of policy on growth and
employment is inherently difficult because no one can observe directly what would have
occurred without the policy. But multiple methodologies and multiple sources point to similar
estimates of ARRA’s impact on the economy.

Don't look at how many jobs it created per dollar, but what it did to our economy??? it turned it around and got out of the rescission faster.

Stop whining about how bad the last guy was, suck it up - and tell me your plan to fix it - and then do it.

And while im not expecting an instant fix - in 3 years, 2 of which you had a super majority- i expect SOME kind of progress. If you think the president is doing an awsome job - more power to ya, i would just disagree.

It's astounding how many Republicans are still confused and misinformed about our national debt. Here are the facts, which anybody can look up at the Bureau of Public Debt:

When Reagan became president, the national debt was less than $1 trillion.

He and Bush Sr. promptly quadrupled it, passing a $350 billion annual deficit on to Clinton.

Clinton eventually balanced the budget, thanks primarily to the Deficit Reduction Act of 1993, which not one single Republican in Congress voted for.

We were on a path toward eradicating the national debt altogether when Bush Jr. became president.

Bush took the projected surpluses and turned them into nearly $5 trillion in additional debt, handing a failed economy and a $1.4 trillion (actually more) annual deficit to Obama.

Virtually all of the debt incurred since then (we're past $14 trillion now thanks to Reagan Republicans) has been due to: the effects of the Great Recession, the two botched Bush wars, Medicare Part D (not paid for under Bush), and the two Bush tax cuts.

The Recovery Act REDUCED deficits after it was enacted (see the Blinder/Zandi report).

Get a clue Republicans or you will continue to ruin your own country. Let the smart people continue fixing the mess that Bush and the Republicans made.

For the last 3 decades the rich have bombarded us with propaganda saying that the "next" tax break was going to rescue the country. Thirty years later we have falling infrastructure, failing schools, rampant joblessness, broken social programs, etc.. And the only thing that's changed is millionaires became billionaires.

Federal government spending has risen under President Obama, mostly because of the $800 billion stimulus designed to offset the massive recession. But the increase in federal spending under Obama is dwarfed by the colossal increase under President Bush.

from 2000 to 2008, under President Bush, Federal spending rose by $1.3 trillion, from $1.9 trillion a year to $3.2 trillion a year.

From 2009 to 2011, meanwhile, under President Obama, federal spending has risen by $600 billion, from $3.2 trillion a year to $3.8 trillion a year. It has also now begun to decline.

In other words, federal government spending under President Bush increased 2X as much as it has under President Obama.

From the numbers above 1.2 trillion dollars is what Obama has added to the debt. Most economist even ones that served under Bush, have stated that the Obama stimulus bill helped us recover faster from the rescission.

I have a link for you if you want to check the numbers for yourself?

Speaking at a retreat for House Republicans in Baltimore on Jan. 29, 2010, Obama was particularly critical of a question from Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas. Hensarling asked Obama, "You are soon to submit a new budget, Mr. President. Will that new budget, like your old budget, triple the national debt and continue to take us down the path of increasing the cost of government to almost 25 percent of our economy?"

"The fact of the matter is," Obama replied, "is that when we came into office, the deficit was $1.3 trillion -- $1.3 trillion. So when you say that suddenly I've got a monthly deficit that's higher than the annual deficit left by Republicans, that's factually just not true, and you know it's not true. And what is true is that we came in already with a $1.3 trillion deficit before I had passed any law. What is true is, we came in with $8 trillion worth of debt over the next decade."

Heartlight - im not expecting an instant fix to the problem - what i am expecting is to not listen to the President and his supporters make excuses by blaming the previous guy. i know its a big issue, i know it takes time - i know that whoever is the president the opposition in congress is going to make their life a living hell - but seriously - Man up.

SUPER MAJORITY???? When did Obama have a super majority in congress??? you need 60 votes to have a super majority... Show me when the 112th congress had a super majority?

Don't look at how many jobs it created per dollar, but what it did to our economy??? it turned it around and got out of the rescission faster.

In contract law, rescission has been defined as the unmaking of a contract between parties.

I agree he broke free of his agreement with the people of hope and change, and doubled down on crony capitalism, like Solyndra

I would hate to see what you call a bad economy. I don't call a gdp of 1.8% good. As far as the 2008 budget deficit, both the President (Bush) and the democrat controlled congress resisted TARP but They All freaked out when the stock market dropped like a stone. Besides, only half of the 780 billion was spent by the Bush administration. Obama had to go to congress to release the other half.

It would have probably helped had Obama spent the first two years addressing the troubled economy instead of shoving his health care bill down our throats

alex cali, take a chill pill. Shovel some snow. Play with your kids!

Many of us conservatives were strongly opposed to Medicare Part D, the bloated agricultural bills and bloated highway bills passed by Bush. The current primary GOP primary fight is about finding a true conservative that will get our economy back on track. Bush, unfortunately was not a true conservative. He is in Texas, shall we focus on the future?

Obama has had the levers of power. He has had far more to work with than Reagan when Reagan changed the course of history. Leaders that have valid ideas get cooperation with the other side. Reagan, Bill Clinton and Bush found bipartisan support for their programs. Losers like Obama and Jimmy Carter blame the other side when things don't go their way.

The country has a massive spending problem. I Agree Bush spent way too much. Obama has spent much more. We cannot sustain spending at these levels.

Many economists do not agree with your numbers that the stimulus did much good. It was an unfocused liberal grab bag of ideas, championed by Nancy Pelosi while Obama stayed out of the way. If we would have spent $800 billion just on highways and bridges, and other infrastructure, we might have something today. The stimulus spent $50 billion on infrastructure and it was basically a drop in the bucket. Teachers and police are local responsibilities. If our town needs more teachers, we will pay for it. I don't want to pay for teachers in Iowa or Indiana.

I don't have time to rebut all your arguments, but I will challenge you on this one. You and others keep mentioning a time frame of 30 years, which neatly coincides with Reagan. The disaster of government spending started 50 years ago with LBJ. Guns and Butter. War on Poverty. Oodles of misguided social programs that have trained generations to be dependent on the government and not on themselves.

The entire federal budget system needs to be overhauled, including the Pentagon. Every program must be justified or eliminated. The only person in Washington with a clue is Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. To bad he is not running for office. Ryan proposed bold radical ideas. We must have new thinking in DC to get us out of this mess.

Obama ran on hope and change. All we have seen is same old same old. Stop Blaming Bush and Reagan. You guys have had the power, now do something.

You do realize that spending is necessary for stabilizing an economy during a recession. TARP was very painful as it transferred taxpayer dollars to the big banks who helped expand the Great Recession; yet is was necessary to keep the banks from going out of business and was used to keep the hole that our economy was in from getting deeper. The stimulus, however, was targeted to boost demand and get the economy out of the hole. It wasn't managed at 100% efficiency, and according to many economists it wasn't large enough, but it created or saved millions of jobs and injected billions of dollars in a cash-strapped market. We NEEDED those programs in order to keep the Great Recession from becoming a depression. And technically, Obama voted for two budget bills at the most during his time in the Senate. If he voted for the 2006 budget, the deficit would have been the lowest in over a decade, at about $193 billion. The second one was higher, yet much lower than the $1.4 trillion deficit in 2008, which was caused by the recession and signed into action by President Bush. And to anyone who says that Obama could have tried to reduce the deficit since entering office, you are dead wrong. Obama could have done that, but it would have expanded the recession. In 1937, FDR tried to balance the budget during the recovery, but it sabotaged the economy and led us into another downturn. So Obama could not have tried to balance the budget until late 2010 at the very least, when the recession had been ended and the recovery expanded.

And Gary, although I agree that this government is spending too much, we cannot solve it by cutting our way out. Doing so would compromise the recovery and send us into another recession. We have to balance the budget with tax increases AND spending cuts in certain areas, mostly in entitlements (through REFORM, not PRIVATIZATION) and defense. If we want to impact the deficit in a major way, why don't we just let the Bush tax cuts expire in 2012, saving us $3.5 trillion over ten years? Then we add about $3 trillion in budget cuts through entitlement reform, cuts and prioritizing in our defense budget, and remove waste and trim the fat in discretionary spending, which would net us about $7 trillion plus interest savings. Combine that with reforming the tax code and cracking down on tax evasion and entitlement/welfare fraud, and we could remove around $8 trillion from the deficit over the next decade. Why can't your side admit that we need major revenue increases and defense cuts to decrease the debt?? If your side does that, then my side will be able to cope with cuts in discretionary spending and entitlement reform.

But I say we still have to increase spending to help our economy. In order to avoid compromising our debt reduction process, the government ought to directly pay for this instead of borrow for it. I would propose a bill similar to that of Obama's jobs package, and I would fund it with a small surtax on millionaires AND additional spending cuts. The plan would include a more centralized education system, education and job retraining reform, about $60 billion to invest in an infrastructure bank, additional spending to save the jobs of hundreds of thousands of civil servants, investments in clean energy and innovation, a payroll tax cut, reforming the corporate tax code, and allowing companies to drill for oil and natural gas in the U.S. WITH certain environmental and safety restrictions. What do you say?? Do we have a deal?

For those who are listening to the liberals propagating the fallacy that everything is "Bush's fault", think about this.

January 3rd, 2007, the day the democrats took over the Senate & Congress: The DOW Jones closed @ 12,621.77. The GDP for the previous year was 3.5%. The unemployment rate was @ 4.6% George Bush's Economic policies SET A RECORD OF 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB CREATION! Remember that day...

January 3rd, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee & Chris Dodd Took over the Senate Banking Committee. The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy? BANKING & FINANCIAL SERVICES!

THANK YOU DEMOCRATS (especially Barney) for taking us from 13,000 DOW, 3.5 GDP & 4.6% unemployment... to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 trillion dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac FIASCOES!

Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie -starting in 2001 because it was financially risky for the U.S economy. Barney blocked it and called it a "Chicken Little Philosophy" (and the sky did fall!) And who took the 3rd highest pay-off from Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac? OBAMA. And who fought against reform of Fannie & Freddie? OBAMA and the Democrat Congress, especially BARNEY!!!

So when someone tries to blame Bush... REMEMBER January 3rd 2007... THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!!! Bush may have been in the car but the democrats were in charge of the gas pedal & the steering wheel they were driving the economy into the ditch.

Budgets do not come from the White House.. They come from Congress and the party that controlled Congress since 2007 is the Democratic party. Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for 2008 & 2009 as well as 2010 & 2011.

In that first year they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.

For 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep the government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the 2009 budget.

And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as president to complete 2009. Let's remember what the deficits looked like during that period:

If the democrats inherited any deficit, it was the 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in 5 years, and fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets.

IF OBAMA INHERITED ANYTHING, HE INHERITED IT FROM HIMSELF. IN A NUTSHELL, WHAT OBAMA IS SAYING IS

"I INHERITED A DEFICIT THAT I VOTED FOR, AND THEN I VOTED TO EXPAND THAT DEFICIT FOUR-FOLD SINCE JANUARY 20th."

And for your information 2007 and 2008 democrats did not pass any budget. Bush promised to veto them.

I dare you look up what "supplemental appropriations" means and what bush did with them to keep them hidden until Obama took office.

                  supplemental appropriations

                  supplemental appropriations

                  supplemental appropriations

                  supplemental appropriations

                  supplemental appropriations

                  supplemental appropriations

                  supplemental appropriations

                  supplemental appropriations

Bush made us think the deficit was lower than it really was. Especially to keep the cost of the war hidden.

The National Debt is now over 15 trillion dollars and we haven't gotten started well with HCR, Obama's half billion jobs bill, the billions he is planning on spending on green energy and his electric train set. That is why we are p.o.'ed. Every projection I have seen is that the national debt will reach 20 trillion by 2016. This is unsustainable, why can't you see that.

Obama has increased the national debt in 36 months almost as much as Bush did in 8 years. How is that better? You keep leaving facts like that out of your post. If Obama is so great then why do you feel you need to lie for him?

Greg, according to your logic, the Democrats COULD NOT have caused the recession and the collapse of the Dow Jones stock market because technically it crashed on the day that they took office. So in actuality, the GOP-controlled Congress must have screwed things up to have the economy go into a headspin the day that the Democrats took office. And technically, we might not have had those deficits had your old pal Bush kept the Treasury purse closed and actually tried to pay down the debt and use the surplus for improving our education system and our economy. But no; he had to waste it all on Iraqi oil and stupid tax cuts. And I will stop blaming Bush (although he is a big contributor to the mess we're in) if your side stops with the name-calling, the demonizing, and the obstructionism and try to COMPROMISE to help our economy. But I highly doubt that that will ever happen, so you'll be hearing a lot about how Bush screwed America.

You cant cut the deficit in a recession the great depression taught us that.

It took Clinton 8 years to leave a 200 billion surplus from a 400 billion deficit. and you want Obama to cut 1.3 trillion when he came into office with the biggest recession since the great depression?????

                  Its just unthinkable!!!!!!!!

                  Cuts in the military

And if you want a debt-reduction plan, then try looking at this one:

                  1. Deficit Reduction Package over 12 years:

                  • Cut defense by $800 billion. Prioritize spending to match the investments made by the Chinese, install cyber-defense system to defend American projects and info. Close 144 bases (mostly in Europe and US)= $40 billion a year. Invest more in drones. Cap aircraft carriers at 13. Target waste in private contracting.
                  • $1.2 trillion in savings from entitlement reform: Raise cap to 90% of taxable income; preserve tax on $3.5 million estate; progressive indexing; adjust COLA, etc.
                  • Remove Bush tax cuts except $1.2 trillion for middle/lower class earners= $3.2-3.6 trillion savings. Repeal all of Bush tax cuts in 2015 but save deductions for marriage, house, children, etc.
                  • Gradually increase taxes on the highest income bracket to 45.4% from 39.6% after repeal of Bush tax cuts=$900 billion.
                  • Increase capital gains tax to 21%.
                  • Reform tax code, eliminate loopholes and most tax expenditures. Add a value-added tax at about 4-5% as long as it won't stifle growth or overburden taxpayers. If it does stifle growth, wait until economy (unemployment rate, stock market data, etc) is up to pre-recession levels and then enact it.
                  • Lower corporate tax rate to competitive 17.5% BUT no loopholes and ALL corporations pay 17.5%. NO TAX REFUNDS for corporations.
                  • Eliminate $100 billion in subsidies for oil/gas, ethanol, and farms. Use $60 billion for deficit and the rest for incentives in clean energy.
                  • Reform government departments, agencies. Place Dept. of Homeland Security under Defense Department.
                  • Cut $2.1 trillion from the rest of discretionary spending EXCEPT NASA and Education.
                  • Wealth tax to discourage hoarding of money.
                  • Total savings=~$9 trillion over 12 years including lower interest.

                  2. Economic Plan (paid for by a 4% surtax on people who make over $1 million).

                  • $60 billion in infrastructure bank.
                  • $40 billion in incentives for clean energy, plus increases in subsidies and new projects to construct solar power plants, wind farms, nuclear power plants, hydroelectric dams, etc.
                  • 100% duty on goods from nations that manipulate trade markets (China, Russia, etc).
                  • $50 billion for innovation.
                  • Education reform along lines of Obey Porter model. Also investing into Head Start education program. Merit-based pay, $2,000 per student, and revamp of building conditions and technology. Follow example of nations beating us with new teaching techniques.
                  • Immigration reform. Sponsor immigration of those excelling in science, math, technology, etc and offer them government jobs if they can't get them in the private sector.
                  • $200 billion in plan to rebuild America using underemployed and unemployed people.
                  • $50 billion to upgrade U.S. airports, refineries, oil rigs, and harbors.
                  • Help housing market by speeding up foreclosure time, destroying old houses for new projects, writing off underwater mortgages, and having the feds and state and local govts buy houses and teaming up with private sector to rent out homes and split profits until market fully recovers (nice revenue stream; less foreclosures; win-win).
                  • Reinstate Glass-Steagall Act.
                  • Reform Wall Street.
                  • Full employment policies.
                  • Living wages and higher minimum wage after recovery.
                  • Low-cost higher education.
                  • Employee Ownership Programs.
                  • Creation of a Pacific trade zone area open to all nations THAT WILL OBEY TRADE LAWS. China will not be initially invited until they cooperate with the WTO on trade fraud.
                  • Decrease inequality by promoting education, strong safety nets for the unemployed, and pro-growth policies from both the left AND the right, including a more progressive tax structure.
                  • $50 billion for domestic energy exploration.
                  • $40 billion for Department of Tourism and 200,000 embassy workers to speed up time to get a visa to visit the US. Increase tourism, create jobs, and allow people to spend money in America.
                  • Broad national regulatory overview: cut wasteful regulations in some sectors (energy infrastructure, etc) and install new regulations in others (financial markets, housing, etc).
                  • New regulation: all companies must increase their employees salaries at least once every two to five years and must index for inflation (allows middle and lower class income to increase steadily).
                  • Follow People's Budget economic rebooting package and tax reform onhttp://grijalva.house.gov/uploads/The_CPC_FY2012_Budget.pdf
                  • Post Office reform. Eliminate health benefit payment over 75 years; buyout 100,000 employees; invest in online shipping and deliveries; eliminate all transfers of money to federal accounts until Post Office balance sheet is balanced; increase cost of stamps by $.03; temporary 2% pay cut and 15% decrease in administrative salaries.
                  • Tax all companies on money made on American market. Give deductions for companies for every dollar they spend hiring American workers who earn a salary/benefits of under $250,000 or purchasing Made in America supplies, goods, parts, materials, etc.
                  • Remove any breaks for companies that offshore jobs, and offer a large tax credit for every wave insourced jobs from companies based on number of jobs insourced (around $5,000-8,000 per head).

                  3. Reform Government.

                  • Government funded campaigns and zero-contributions of private donors (unions, companies, etc) but welcome for individual donations under $200.
                  • Elimination of Super PACs and reject corporate/union person-hood.
                  • Proportional representation.
                  • Filibuster reform. Limit amount per year and make certain bills immune.
                  • Cut congressional budgets by 20% and decrease pay for officials from $170,000+ to $80,000.
                  • Constitutional amendment keeping lobbyists away from Capitol Hill when in session.
                  • NO VACATIONS OR PAY when deadlock is in government.
                  • Congress can no longer vote to increase their own pay. That occurs automatically when national standard of living rises.

                  @alex cali

Keep posting brother. Those of us who do care about the facts, not our facts but the verifiable facts, want to read what you post and check it out for ourselves.

So far I have not found any inaccuracies in your posts and I have taken the time to research them.

I detest the vitriol that comes from the GOP these days. It is not only over the top but it is completely dishonest. If it was expressed as an opinion then that is their individual right but to deliberately present a view as fact is nothing less than dishonest and un-American. The GOP have behaved embarrassingly ever since President Obama was inaugerated. I don't agree with everything he does but he is our President! I can not remember a time when a President has been treated with such disrespect as today (my Grandmother is the one who made that comment). If I don't approve of what he does or plans to do, I access my Senator, Member of Congress or the President directly and if I get no satisfaction, then on voting day - provided that I am not disqualified from voting because of a new rule or more accurately impediment.

All the name calling aside, we have a long road ahead and we need to get on with it. We cannot turn the clock back nor should we want to. The Constitution was meant to be an evolving document (hence Ammendments) and I really resent those who choose to use it as an anchor. Things that do not evolve become extinct and no amount of denial can change that. Seen a Neanderthal lately?

We so need to remove religion (not faith) from the halls of power and we need our courts to uphold and enforce the 1st Ammendment Article VI para. 3

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

As I read this it is obvious that we have drifted from this directive to put it mildly. My opinion is that the present campaigning in the GOP Primary is evidence enough. The "test" referred to here is how religiously extreme a candidate has to be before they can secure the nomination as the candidate for the GOP.

No one ever said that the road forward was easy or clear, but recent psycho battles with my brothers and sisters were not in the lesson plans. They were not supposed to be the enemy but they are making themselves so through ignorance. Fine to disagree with me but not to the extent of violence and at least listen to my view as I have listened to yours. Then we will see change we can believe in.

You are wrong on the stimulus funds going to bail out banks - that is what TARP did, in the form of loans, most of which have been paid back. What the 'stimulus' did was bail out Obama's union buddies in the various public unions for teachers, police, and the like.

Perhaps you should learn about the facts instead of swallowing the progressive democrat propaganda.

Can you point to some of the unions that Obama helped out???

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, ARRA... Did not go out to help Obamas union buddies. Please go and look it up it went to help out every section of our economy.

The only thing i can say i reported wrong was that it wasn't the 112th congress it was the 111th.

I went over my posts right now and that's the only thing i found, but you are welcome to point to me any other that you find.

Even with Clinton's budget surplus, he left Bush a 5.3 trillion national debt.

I'm not going to deny that Obama offered a reduction in spending over the next ten years. According to your figures that would be 40 billion per year. Yet he wanted an immediate increase in taxes. That would not be the first time that democrats have offered a spending cut only to renege down the road.

Yet he wanted an immediate increase in taxes. That would not be the first time that democrats have offered a spending cut only to renege down the road.

If Bush would have kept the spending and revenues at the same rate as Clinton left it, after Bushs 8 years the debt would have been at 3.7 trillion. Instead he left it with almost 12 trillion after the October 2009 budget ended. And a 1.3 trillion deficit.

But no instead of working to pay down the debt he cut revenues by giving the millionaires and billionaires a 70 billion a year tax cut. increased spending with Medicare part D and other totally wasteful spending. The wars were never part of the budget and were being pay for with supplemental appropriations.

I had a guy in here the other day that showed me a link to the Bureau of the Public Debt and had the deficit for every day Bush was in office and on the last year the deficit went over 400 billion. Then shows me the 2009 deficit and its 1.3 trillion and hes was sure Obama had done it. It took me like 10 posts to get him to see the truth and in the end comes back a punctuation reply.

Obama comes in and all the money not being counted was put into the budget and then boom! we have a 1.3 trillion deficit.

And i meant 400 billion per year for the next ten years every year. Which equals 4 trillion dollars.

That was a darn good deal. Most the critics on the right blasted the deal put on the table as bogus because after republicans had approved it in congress they said Obama would have back down out of the deal and not cut any entitlements.

Tax revenues are the lowest in 50 years, this is why we have such huge deficits. Now Bush and Co must have know this was going to happen and my question is how did they let this happen???? Its just unthinkable that they did not see this coming????

Now you have Fox news and Rush Limpballs telling people that Obama is doing all the spending when its absolutely not true.

Obama comes in 3.2 trillion budget Obama gets that budget to 3.8 trillion and for the next 2 years he spends 1.2 trillion that's Obama spending. 2011 Budget 3.1 trillion, 2012 budget 3 trillion.

They are working on getting the budget down which in turn brings the deficit down.

NOW THIS WHOLE THING COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF BEFORE BUSH TOOK OFFICE HE WOULD HAVE TAKEN A ACCOUNTING 101 CLASS..... LOL!!!!!!!

I would like to see a list of bills passed by the GOP that really helped the average American. And to be fair, from both parties.

Plus a list of bills, from both parties, that have really hurt the average American? Until someone can do that, your rethoric on which party is the best, doesn't mean manure.

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened."
                    - Norman Thomas

This memorable quotation is from Sir Alex Fraser Tytler (1742-1813). Scottish jurist and historian, he was widely known in his time and was professor of Universal History at Edinburgh University in the late 18th century.

The quotation is from the 1801 collection of his lectures:

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the results that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world's great civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence:
                    from bondage to spiritual faith;
                    from spiritual faith to great courage;
                    from courage to liberty;
                    from liberty to abundance;
                    from abundance to selfishness;
                    from selfishness to complacency;
                    from complacency to apathy;
                    from apathy to dependency;
from dependency back again to bondage."

"In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all – security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again."

as a nation we are entering a dependency stage where there is no turning back and there is a segment of our society that is pushing america to the last stage - bondage.

obama is on goal for that end and we are all fools for voting him in office

fortunately he has not dismantaled the 2nd amendment

Glad he is focusing on the economy after 3 years of dithering. A good place to start would be with the Simpson Bowles commission report that Obama asked for. Among other things, it called for complete reform of the tax code: business and personal.

Reform does not mean giving more to the rich. It means a flatter, fairer code with no or fewer loopholes. It means a corporate tax rate in line with other industrial nations. A simplified tax code would grow the economy, ease the very real compliance burden and bring in more revenue.

No loopholes means no ethanol giveaways and no gifts to big oil. It also means no mortgage interest deductions for McMansions. I am a die hard conservative and also in the real estate industry, so it will not be painless for me. But the larger issue of economic growth trumps individual and industry specific issues.

With presidential leadership, this can get done this year. The entire house and 1/3 of the Senate are up for reelection. Democrats, Republicans, and the President have little to show for themselves, and passing a major piece of important legislation in an election year might help a few more of them keep their jobs.

Unfortunately, the populist tone of his comments suggest he is heading in the "us vs them" direction that is easy politically. He will find out in the fall: Americans admire success, deeply want strong economic growth and have never responded in large part to politics of envy. I hope he chooses the more difficult path of truly trying to accomplish something this year.

Since when is there an us versus them? We are all in this together...something that the president understands. I feel when the president talks about those in society that need help....it is never from the point of a us versus them point of view; but rather how we can all work to make it possible for everyone to enjoy a decent quality of life in this country.

As a progressive, I have no problem with a person with one home allowed up to the $ 1 million writing off their mortgage interest. Where I do have problems is them writing off the mortgage interest is on the second home.

I have problems with those who receive farm subsidies who have no intention of farming. Do you know 3/4 of the total outlay for farm subsidies go to fortune 500 companies? Many of which have nothing to do with farming.

If you want to hear a true populist tone...look no further than Newt.

OWS is about restoring income inequality and trying to rein in the influence that Big Business has on Washington. They also want the Big Banks to be held accountable for the financial collapse. Not all of them are liberals, although many are. They are a melting pot for old and young, different races, religions, and philosophies. I'll bet you that there are Ron Paul supporters as well as Obama supporters in OWS' midst. If OWS has envy, it is envious on how the government has sold out to Big Business and how the wealthy have been getting richer and the middle class has been shrinking. Cut the anti-OWS BS and actually go to their rallies. They are NOT a bunch of unemployed lazy welfare cats.

And do you think the Tea Party is any better??? All they call for is lower taxes, lower spending, and small government. That may sound good at first, but it would kill us in the long run. We NEED regulations to soften the rough edges of capitalism. We NEED a strong central government to manage our nation as a whole. We NEED spending in order to protect and serve this country and help those in need. OWS may be violent, but at least they aren't following political preferences, unlike the Tea Party.

Have a suspected medical condition but can't afford to see a Doctor? Can't afford decent clothing for the kids, let alone a Soccer uniform? Skipping the kids dental appointments and your own are rotting? Have to borrow a few bucks from a co-worker, in-law, or neighbor to buy enough gas to get you through until payday? Cell phone is shut off half the time because you chose to pay the rent rather than the bill? Got a lot of friends in the same mess? Motor in the car is knocking and the roof on the house is leaking but you don't have enough money to do a damn thing about it? You are just where the republican party wants you to be. Fact, most of 'em wil allow you to french kiss their ass if you are so inclined.

Obama believes that the government's role is to create an equal playing field for the "middle class". He promotes class envy on a regular basis. He thinks it's the government's role to give people a "fair shot to succeed". I totally reject this point of view. I embrace my independence and responsibility to stand my own 2 feet without the need for government dependence. Next November, voters will either decide to reject or embrace Obama's idealogy. Hopefully, there will be a resonding rejection, for the sake of our future as the most powerful nation on earth.

I'm all for you standing on your own two feet but when the playing field is only level for those with power and influence and the middle class is disappearing while the rich just keep getting richer. So speaking for someone that has seen corporate giants shove their agenda down our throat in the name of profits without a shed of a moral compass. Tobacco companies would still have us believe their product didn't cause cancer and served some useful purpose other than lining it's pocket. Oil companies would gladly put profit above safety and Big Banks still find nothing distasteful in charging loan shark rates but according to your logic they are just standing on their own two feet. Government is supposed to be by the people and for the people and regardless of the Supreme Courts irrational decision to consider Corporations as people they're not the people the Constitution had in mind.

I would like to remind you that the economy did not start a real decline untill 2007. That was when the democrats took control of congress. The credit crisis that is the root of the depression was caused by policies put in place during the Clinton administration.

But even though Obama has done an admiral job of blaming Bush for all our economic problems, his accusations have done nothing to help. I think it was Einstein that said and I paraphrase; insanity is doing the same over and expecting different results. I don't see where the dems have done anything to help the situation.

Actually the real decline started much earlier than that, or G. W. Bush wouldn't have been urging everyone to go shopping. He was telling people that as early as 2004....go shopping and fly frequently was his mantra. Hey....you just can't fight two unfunded and borrowed for wars without the economy tanking. Have you never heard: "You can't have guns and butter."

If you want to go into when the policies were put in place you have to go back to 1998 when Clinton helped his friend and supporter Sandy Weill to get permission from the SEC to merge Citicorp and The Travelers Group to form Citigroup. None of you liberals want to admit that even happened even though it is a matter of public record

Actually the problem started with the Gramm, Leach, Bliley Act which was sponsored by three Republicans Phil Gramm, Jim Leach, and Thomas Bliley. The Financial Services Modernization Act which repealed protections in the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933.

But first, Sandy Weill was allowed to merge Citicorp and The Travelers Group in 1998 and Gramm-Leach-Bliley was not passed until 1999. Further, to get the votes from the democrats to avoid a veto promised by Bill Clinton congress amended a beefed up version of the Community Reinvestment Act. The CRA required that the institutions prove they were not redlining certain financially disadvantaged communities before they were allowed to merge. Further; Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would not purchase the loan instruments or credit default swaps unless the institutions could prove they were not redlining. You may also want to check out what Franklin Raines was up to with Fannie Mae and his accountintg practices that resulted in huge bonuses for him. As you will remember, Raines was Clinton's Budget director during Clinton's second term.

Funny, I have never had a problem with getting a job, and continue to get calls and emails of interest. Its not about standing around waiting for a government check and some talking head from Washington to take from someone else and give it to me. What ever happened to personal responsibility? What good is a degree in horticulture, or animal sciences going to do in this economy? There are many jobs out there, my company is always looking for talent, the problem is the talent pool isn't there. I don't know where this class warfare came from or trickle down economics, but this country is quickly turning into a welfare state and we will all suffer for that ...

Why does the Tea Party think that unemployment insurance is hurting the recovery. I admit, giving people money when they are unemployed gives them the incentive to stay unemployed, but the insurance barely covers one's day-to-day needs. In addition, the benefits allow the unemployed to spend money, sustaining our recovery. And besides, don't you think people who receive the check feel embarrassed or ashamed for not being able to provide for their families?? I will bet you that the vast majority of the unemployed are searching for jobs. And although there are low-paying jobs available to them, many feel that those jobs are below them, and decide that they are willing to spend a few more days getting government checks in order to find a job that pays enough for them to actually live on. Don't demonize the unemployed as lazy bastards, because people have been doing that for centuries. If you conservatives stop referring to the poor and unemployed as lazy welfare cats, then maybe liberals like me will stop deriding the 1% as fat cats. But we NEED to stop the disparity in income in this nation, and we have to take EVERY step in order to do that, even if it means raising taxes on the wealthy or spending more on social programs and safety nets.

That would be because unemployment insurance is only for the first 6 months of unemployment. Anyhing over that duration is just another name for welfare.

But it supports the economy. I know that it might incentivize unemployment, but it is a major part of our recovery by allowing the unemployed to LIVE. If we let unemployment benefits expire GDP growth would shrink due to decreasing demand.

                        How, Freshiee, how?

Eventually, the loans have to be repaid - with interest. Whether borrowed by the feds or the states, the money has to be paid back. This means that those who actually pay taxes will have to pay even more in taxes. All that is being done is moving the money from citizen A (who is working) to citizen B (who is not working). What does citizen A have to show for his work?

While you may enjoy working for free; most, including myself, do not appreciate having our hard-earned wages confiscated by the government to support those who cannot or will not work.

A better solution would be to get excessive government interference (in the form of taxes and superlative regulations) out of the way and let private industry create jobs to let people support themselves. How about real incentives for small business to create jobs? The pittances that Obama has come up with so far have yielded no real results. He has, however, done all he can do to continue driving jobs overseas by stopping drilling for oil, stopping the pipeline, instituting Obamacare, and the list goes on.

                          #6.12 - Sun Jan 22, 2012 9:39 AM EST

I don't like how we have a huge debt, but we have to be reasonable. We need to cut spending, but we also need to prioritize investments. And FWI, I am not what you would call a freeloader. And I suppose you would rather have our nation plunged into an economic depression by letting everyone on unemployment insurance fend for themselves??? I support cutting spending. I support reducing the debt and broadening the tax base. I don't like freeloaders. But not everyone on unemployment insurance is a freeloader. I will bet that the majority are searching for jobs that they can live on, and are unsuccessful. Do you think these people WANT to be unemployed. Do you think they like having to come home every day without a job having to eat food purchased with benefits instead of their own cash?? Do you think that they like the fact that they can't provide for their family??? I think not.

And tell me where the government has excessive interference in our economy. I admit that we need a regulatory overview, but we shouldn't rashly cut all of them at once. And the private industry IS creating jobs. What they need is a boost from the feds to spur demand and rev up the economic engine. Obama HAS placed incentives for hiring workers, and his projects HAVE yielded results. Check the 22 months of private sector growth. And give me a list of companies that have driven jobs overseas BECAUSE of Obama's policies.

And admit this, Tammy; the government NEEDS TO RAISE TAXES. The American people have been coddled with low taxes FOR TOO LONG while the government balloons the debt. At least Obama has the guts to tell the American people that we ALL have to pay our fair share, and that he is willing to reform entitlements and cut spending as long as we end the useless tax breaks for the wealthy. Tell me how Obamacare and stopping the pipeline that transports dangerously dirty oil over a WATER AQUIFER that could be polluting by an oil spill has driven jobs overseas??? Canada is DETERMINED to build that pipeline, and they are gonna reapply for a new route.

Stop buying into the BS that the right wing is feeding you. Seek the truth, for the truth shall set you free. Play the man, tammy. We shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in America, as I trust shall never be put out.

In Carroll County Ohio.....Today I saw the economy and hopes of Americans take a turn for the better. At the Carroll County Fairgrounds there were many people of all ages, male and female lined up outside of a small building at the fairgrounds in the cold weather, snow upto their knees. They stood outside in the cold looking for better jobs....hope. Hope that would assuredly come to them and their families.

200+ Americans stood in the cold looking for a better life and they found it. Their lives have taken a turn for the better with each new well that is drilled and each new well that capped. They are the new light in Carroll County. They will bring revenue into the county thus creating more jobs for the future of Carroll County.

A new proverb in Carroll County was written today.

Proverb:1:21:2012 And the men and women of Carroll County walked, their feet cold by the winters breath into the small building. They signed their names and presented their testaments to each collector that reviewed and placed within a special place their testaments. Every breath they took and exhaled beat their hearts faster and faster with the exhultations of a brighter future. And they walked. They remembered that with each raising of every tower with an American flag illuminated by a single light that they were raising the flag of hope just like the Marines who had raised the flag at Mount Suribachi on Okinawa. The light of every tower shone out through the darkness as a beacon to guide the lost to a place of being known....a place of warmth and sustinance. The clouds above them blew hard against them but they did not deter as they were anointed with the grace of being called Roughneck. Carroll County Roughnecks is what their testaments will anoint their hearths and tables with this season.

His state of the union address will discuss job creation? Am I hearing this right? He just opposed a single huge piece of "shovel-ready" job legislation by rejecting the keystone pipeline! The only jobs he knows how to create are government jobs tilted in favor of minority hiring.

What lies you spout, he didn't reject the pipeline outright, he put it off until the State Dept could finish their report. He left the door open for Keystone to reapply. And then people wonder why you, and people like you think, are correct. You knowing told a lie. Or didn't Faux News report the true FACTS?

Keystone would not have been a drop in the bucket where jobs are concerned,(unless you are talking about healthcare because they wanted to build it through a fresh water aquifer), this thing isn't even for American oil production and is dirty oil that we refuse to use because of the environmental impact. Every time that I hear someone spouting about this ignorant plan that the Republican House tried to shove down the throats of the American people, it makes me realize just how truly misguided the Republican/Tea party sheeple are. We need something that actually produces long term job growth that benefits OUR economy, not Canada's or China's. Before opening your mouth, I would suggest that you do a little research. Even Republicans in the areas where the pipeline is mapped to go through are opposed to this monstrosity. Educate yourself would you please?

Keystone XL is shovel-ready. TransCanada is poised to put 13,000 Americans to work to construct the pipeline - pipefitters, welders, mechanics, electricians, heavy equipment operators, among other jobs - in addition to 7,000 manufacturing jobs that would be created across the U.S. Additionally, local businesses along the pipeline route will benefit from the 118,000 spin-off jobs Keystone XL will create through increased business for local goods and service providers.

Dad, you should really quit listening to Faux Noose to get your information.....These jobs are TEMPORARY, the types of jobs that the right wing so clearly object to,(except when it lines their pockets). You really need to look at the long term effects that WE will be dealing with before attempting to spout fake figures touted by your hero "Boner",(who has Cantor's hand firmly up his ass to make Boner's mouth work). Please educate yourself with the damage and cost to our government that this thing would produce then weigh those numbers with the TEMPORARY jobs that it will create, it really is not worth it.

FYI most construction jobs are "TEMPORARY"

And what about Keystone phase one which parallels this project finished in June 2010 now in operation?

And that's another point that I am glad that you brought up. Apparently you did not read my post. The oil is too dirty to use in the United States and will be shipped to China. I have worked in the construction field for over 30 years and have NEVER had a TEMPORARY position. I don't know where you live, but they seem to be having problems if your construction force work on a TEMPORARY basis. I think that our President, House, and Senate should ALL be working on imposing stiff tariffs on any and every company that has left to do business on foreign soil, that might encourage them to bring those jobs back to the U.S. rather than getting behind some temporary solution to jobs. Also, in case you didn't see it posted in other places here.... I don't know. I work full-time as a house painter, go to law school full-time, and am an OWS supporter and activist.....seems to be working out DAMN well from my point of view!

DA stalker,....you are wrong. There has already been a three-year study on this project(Keystone Pipeline). It has been rerouted, studied for ecological impact (passed), studied by consultants, engineers.Cleared and ok'd by industry professionals.

Speaker Boehner (that is pronounced bay-ner) was promised by the incompetent-in-chief that the only way he would deny it would be if it was not in the best interests of America.

-100,000+ private sector jobs, some of them permanent. Not in America's best interest?

-less dependent on the hostile middle east for oil. Not in America's best interest?

-would bring us closer to energy security. Not in America's best interest?

The only reason that obama insisted on delaying this for another year is the same reason his Senate is sequestering 28 GOP resolutions that are designed to repair the economy. Partisan warfare. If he allowed the Keystone project through the Republican Party would get credit for doing something and Obama cannot have that happen. Not with his election coming up and no good track record of his own.

That's right, Stalker. Your king is willing to sacrifice the future livelihood of Americans to keep his party in power.

First- He is not my king, he is simply put, the best man for the job at this point in history. In the past, I voted for Reagan twice, Bush Sr., Clinton twice, Bush Jr. (Mistake), Gore, And lastly, Obama. My record speaks clearly for itself, I do not vote along a party line. I listen to the platforms and make an educated decision as to who would be the best for our nation at a given period. The GOP is not the same party that they used to be and in no way reflect the interests of the majority of this nation. Perhaps the next election will get them back to the values that they used to have and they will see that it is to their benefit to do what ever they must in order to help this nation and her people again. If not, they are doomed alongside of the Tea Party. I don't think that they even realize that their propensity to back the corporate/banking system of this nation is killing the very party that they serve. In any case, look up that oil that they are trying to pipe here again, and please don't use Fox as a reference. You will find that the statements that I have made here are true. We will never use this oil.

The information that you posted on this link is about the natural gas pipeline and has nothing to do with the OIL pipeline that has been proposed. The pipeline that they are re-applying for is not the completed project. They are looking at ways to re-rout the pipeline so that it does not have an environmental impact:

"Working together with the State Department, Nebraska's Department of Environmental Quality will conduct an environmental assessment to define the best location for Keystone XL in Nebraska. TransCanada will work closely with these agencies and provide them with the information they need to complete a thorough review that addresses concerns regarding the Sandhills region."

The "dotted and slash" portion of the map shows the potential rout of the pipeline, nothing has been built to date as far as the oil pipeline is concerned because that would have been placing the horse before the cart.

This is what they have to say about it:

Calgary, Alberta - January 18, 2012 - TransCanada Corporation (TSX, NYSE: TRP) (TransCanada) announced today it has received the U.S. Department of State's decision that the Presidential Permit for Keystone XL has been denied.

"This outcome is one of the scenarios we anticipated. While we are disappointed, TransCanada remains fully committed to the construction of Keystone XL. Plans are already underway on a number of fronts to largely maintain the construction schedule of the project," said Russ Girling, TransCanada's president and chief executive officer. "We will re-apply for a Presidential Permit and expect a new application would be processed in an expedited manner to allow for an in-service date of late 2014."

TransCanada will continue to work collaboratively with Nebraska's Department of Environmental Quality on determining the safest route for Keystone XL that avoids the Sandhills. This process is expected to be complete in September or October of this year.

And here is a little more information that you might want to wrap your head around:

                            Key Facts on Keystone XL

Energy Security: Tar Sand will not Reduce Dependence on Foreign Oil

Keystone XL will not lessen U.S. dependence on foreign oil, but transport Canadian oil to American refineries for export to overseas markets.

                            • Keystone XL is an export pipeline. According to presentations to investors, Gulf Coast refiners plan to refine the cheap Canadian crude supplied by the pipeline into diesel and other products for export to Europe and Latin America. Proceeds from these exports are earned tax-free. Much of the fuel refined from the pipeline’s heavy crude oil will never reach U.S. drivers’ tanks.
                            • Reducing demand for oil is the best way to improve our energy security. U.S. demand for oil has been declining since 2007. New fuel-efficiency standards mean that this trend will continue once the economy gets back on track. In fact, the Energy Deptartment report on KeystoneXL found that decreasing demand through fuel efficiency is the only way to reduce mid-east oil imports with or without the pipeline.

                            More info:

Gas prices: Keystone XL will increase gas prices for Americans—Especially Farmers

                            • By draining Midwestern refineries of cheap Canadian crude into export-oriented refineries in the Gulf Coast, Keystone XL will increase the cost of gas for Americans.
                            • TransCanada’s 2008 Permit Application states “Existing markets for Canadian heavy crude, principally PADD II [U.S. Midwest], are currently oversupplied, resulting in price discounting for Canadian heavy crude oil. Access to the USGC [U.S. Gulf Coast] via the Keystone XL Pipeline is expected to strengthen Canadian crude oil pricing in [the Midwest] by removing this oversupply. This is expected to increase the price of heavy crude to the equivalent cost of imported crude. The resultant increase in the price of heavy crude is estimated to provide an increase in annual revenue to the Canadian producing industry in 2013 of US $2 billion to US $3.9 billion.”
                            • Independent analysis of these figures found this would increase per-gallon prices by 20 cents/gallon in the Midwest.
                            • According to an independent analysis U.S. farmers, who spent $12.4 billion on fuel in 2009 could see expenses rise to $15 billion or higher in 2012 or 2013 if the pipeline goes through. At least $500 million of the added expense would come from the Canadian market manipulation.

Jobs: TransCanada’s jobs projections are vastly inflated.

                            • In 2008, TransCanada’s Presidential Permit application for Keystone XL to the State Department indicated “a peak workforce of approximately 3,500 to 4,200 construction personnel” to build the pipeline.
                            • Jobs estimates above those listed in its application draw from a 2011 report commissioned by TransCanada that estimates 20,000 “person-years” of employment based on a non-public forecast model using undisclosed inputs provided by TransCanada.
                            • According to TransCanada’s own data, just 11% of the construction jobs on the Keystone I pipeline in South Dakota were filled by South Dakotans–most of them for temporary, low-paying manual labor.
                            • Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) and the Transport Workers Union (TWU) both oppose the pipeline. Their August 2011 statement: “We need jobs, but not ones based on increasing our reliance on Tar Sands oil. There is no shortage of water and sewage pipelines that need to be fixed or replaced, bridges and tunnels that are in need of emergency repair, transportation infrastructure that needs to be renewed and developed. Many jobs could also be created in energy conservation, upgrading the grid, maintaining and expanding public transportation—jobs that can help us reduce air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and improve energy efficiency.”

                            • “Transcanada’s Exaggerated Jobs Claims for KeystoneXL” National Wildlife Federation

Safety: A rupture in the Keystone XL pipeline could cause a BP style oil spill in America’s heartland, over the source of fresh drinking water for 2 million people. NASA’s top climate scientist says that fully developing the tar sands in Canada would mean “essentially game over” for the climate.

                            • The U.S. Pipeline Safety Administration has not yet conducted an in depth analysis of the safety of diluted bitumen (raw tar sands) pipeline, despite unique safety concerns posed by its more corrosive properties.
                            • TransCanada predicted that the Keystone I pipeline would see one spill in 7 years. In fact, there have been 12 spills in 1 year. The company was ordered to dig up 10 sections of pipe after government-ordered tests indicated that defective steel may have been used. KeystoneXL will use steel from the same Indian manufacturer.
                            • Keystone XL will cross through America’s agricultural heartland, the Missouri and Niobrara Rivers, the Ogallala aquifer, sage grouse habitat, walleye fisheries and more.
                            • The agency was not adequately accounting for threats to wildlife, increased pollution in distressed communities where the crude may be refined, or increases in carbon emissions that would exacerbate climate change, and a variety of other issues.

                            WRONG;

                            Project Information

The U.S. $13 billion Keystone pipeline system will play an important role in linking a secure and growing supply of Canadian crude oil with the largest refining markets in the United States, significantly improving North American security supply.

In June 2010 TransCanada commenced commercial operation of the first phase of the Keystone Pipeline System. Keystone's first phase was highlighted by the conversion of natural gas pipeline to crude oil pipeline and construction of an innovative bullet line that brings the crude oil non-stop from Canada to market hubs in the U.S. Midwest.

Keystone Cushing (Phase II), an extension of the Keystone Pipeline from Steele City, Nebraska to Cushing, Oklahoma went into service in February 2011. The 36-inch pipeline connects to storage and distribution facilities at Cushing, a major crude oil marketing/refining and pipeline hub.

The proposed Keystone Gulf Coast Expansion Project is an approximate 2,673-kilometre (1,661-mile), 36-inch crude oil pipeline that would begin at Hardisty, Alberta and extend southeast through Saskatchewan, Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska. It would incorporate a portion of the Keystone Pipeline (Phase II) through Nebraska and Kansas to serve markets at Cushing, Oklahoma before continuing through Oklahoma to a delivery point near existing terminals in Nederland, Texas to serve the Port Arthur, Texas marketplace.

We agree to disagree then? I don't have a problem with that. I just do not think that the benefits outweigh the problems that this could potentially cause and to no benefit of the American people. This only helps the already ultra rich become richer and without even the benefit of taxability when the dirty crude is sold to the world market. So cheers to democracy as we are both able to express out points of view and beliefs.

Why are liberals OK with sports figures making millions of dollars an hour to play with a ball? Why are liberals OK with Hollywood stars making millions of dollars pretending to be someone else? I have asked these questions before & not one wishy washy bottom feeding liberal will answer them.

The answer is simple, they should all pay their fair share too, Obama has already expressed his willingness to. What rock have you been under? Oh yeah....the one that has Fuax Noose broadcasting 24 and 7.

                              Bush Income tax Cuts

EGTRRA generally reduced the rates of individual income taxes:

                              • a new 10% bracket was created for single filers with taxable income up to $6,000, joint filers up to $12,000, and heads of households up to $10,000.
                              • the 15% bracket's lower threshold was indexed to the new 10% bracket
                              • the 28% bracket would be lowered to 25% by 2006.
                              • the 31% bracket would be lowered to 28% by 2006
                              • the 36% bracket would be lowered to 33% by 2006
                              • the 39.6% bracket would be lowered to 35% by 2006

The EGTRRA in many cases lowered the taxes on married couples filing jointly by increasing the standard deduction for joint filers to between 174% and 200% of the deduction for single filers.

Additionally, EGTRRA increased the per-child tax credit and the amount eligible for credit spent on dependent child care, phased out limits on itemized deductions and personal exemptions for higher income taxpayers, and increased the exemption for the Alternative Minimum Tax, and created a new depreciation deduction for qualified property owners.

Rob, as one of the few sane people here, will you explain to me what "drinking the kool aid" means? I think many of the rest here have their's laced with LSD. The laws being initiated by the right are going to take this country back 100 years. Women's rights-stomped on. Voter rights-denied. Regulation- rolled back. Redistricting- tilted right. Corportaions are people? If that is the case, get them off "welfare" too. There are articles all over on line about the lack of workers to pick crops in the south this coming spring. Immigration laws are keeping away the only people that are willing to work for a pittance. So, I hope when food prices sky rocket, they blame their own. I hope that if they don't have the right documents to vote and are denied, they blame their own. When they finally see that their rights are being taken away too, it will be too late for all of us. But, there is no substitute for hate and ignorance...except that kool aid they are so fond of.

Rob and Taj, I'm with ya. Unfortunatley, there are enough problems already, due to the Republicans, and they already blame Obama. So, expecting them to blame themselves based on ideas they're proposing now is not realistic. It was a good thought though.

I've never seen so many ill informed people, so bent on removing a president that's actually trying to help the middle class, in favor of the party that's famously in bed with big oil and big corporations.

It wasn't just Bush who brought the mess. Granting he didn't help stop it by his screwed up policies, the policies of the last thirty years brought it on. It just crashed on his watch. Thirty years people, and you expect to fix it in three or four years.

Blame both parties, neither the GOP or D's have clean hands on this. Wake up and realize it. Let these stupid, and yes I mean stupid posters complain about the President. So far, only one has made a post about what would help move this mess forward, and that was tax reform. Get that started and you will see more jobs appearing for the American worker.

SallyAnn- I totally agree with you, it is BOTH PARTIES, and there is plenty of blame of blame to go around. But here we are, with a election looming, and the party of NO, offers no viable options, and just say's anybody but Obama. Mitt Romney was on the radio show with Laura Ingram, and I'm paraphrasing here, But the jest was Obama didn't cause the recession, and we are in recovery, but vote for me anyway, She said that's kind of a hard sell! My point is, I feel if the GOP would have cooperated, more with the Pres and the Dems, we would be, as a country in a better place! I don't think you reward a party, who's only priority is to make the President look bad, and make sure he is one term President. Still waiting on those jobs!!!!!

No, the steady dismantling of regulatory bodies such as the SEC occurred on bushes watch. When you don't believe in regulation, and you appoint people of the same mentality to head financial regulatory bodies, then what you get it a regulatory agency that does not do its job. Such bodies were starved of funding in the lead up to the financial collapse, and so they could not hope to possibly review even 1% of the securities transactions that were occurring at the time.

You need further proof, look at the state the minerals management agency was in after Bush got through with it. The place turned into a agency trading cocaine and whores for oil leases. Then what happened? The BP disaster.

Nope you are wrong Mike. Check out who Brooksley Born is and what she had to say about regulating the market. Then check out the response she got. Glass-Steagal was repealed in 2000 but check out who got permission to merge anyway and his relationship with the sitting president. Tell me who denied there was any problem with Fannie Mae when calls to regulate both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were made by that sitting president. Keep in mind that the credit crisis caused by the collapse of the housing bubble put the economies of the US and most of Europe in dire financial straights. You liberals need to wake up.

Wow. based on some of these commenters, with this president, no good deed goes unpunished.

But then again, this isn't the first, nor will it be the last time that people favor and vote against their best interests.

I guess some of you want a president who will run this country based on his own personal beliefs, is against women's rights, gay rights, and the middle class.

Its bad enough that there are men who are against women's rights. What's worse is the women I see proudly proclaiming their love for a religious right wing nut whose anti-choice.

Stimulus - a failure by every impartial measurement there is - except in liberal minds. It did, however bolster the public sector unions for teachers and the like by keeping their pension plans solvent for another year or two.

Bin Laden - The military used intel from Bush's setup and followed standing orders from the Bush years to make sure that Obama's indecisiveness wouldn't cost them the mission like his indecisiveness cost the Navy during the problems with the Somali pirates right after he got in office.

Health care "reform" - Not health 'care' reform at all, but health 'insurance' reform, and it's already resulting in higher insurance and drug costs for the average American. Physicians are opting to retire rather than having to deal with even more red tape. The mandate is unconstitutional and will likely result in the entire piece of trash being struck down by the Supreme court. Pelosi, Reid, and Obama should actually be in prison for the way they bribed and extorted the votes from the Congressmen who voted for it. That one piece of 'legislation' is why the democrats were routed in the 2010 elections.

As for the nation's debt - What rock have you been living under? The nation's debt is out of control, our creditworthiness has been downgraded (because not enough was done to cut the out-of-control spending), and Obama and the democrats have not approved a budget for three years! The House passed one that has been languishing on Reid's desk ever since!

Do I even need to go on?

Oh, by the way, when the republicans are called the enemy by Obama and his cohorts, he can hardly be considered 'bi-partisan'.

First of all, the stimulus was a pretty good factor in the recovery of our economy. It created millions of jobs (union or non-union) and spiked demand, allowing the economy to pull back from the brink of depression. Check the facts at http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/did-the-stimulus-work-a-review-of-the-nine-best-studies-on-the-subject/2011/08/16/gIQAThbibJ_blog.html

As for the healthcare plan, there is no piece of evidence showing that Obamacare has directly affected the increase in costs. Healthcare costs have been rising for years; besides, most of it doesn't go into action until 2014.

As for the debt, I have to agree with you on one thing: it is out of control. But while the problem includes out-of-control spending, it also includes the recession. And there is no one solution to fixing the debt. The most efficient way to do so without hurting our economy is to go big and to go balanced; in other words, cut at least $4-5 trillion over 10 years with a combination of spending cuts, tax increases, and stimulus packages to help grow the economy. And the main reason why S&P downgraded us was because of Congress' unwillingness to compromise on how to control the debt. While I do wish that Reid should have passed a budget, the GOP budget aren't necessarily spot-on. And what is so bad about raising revenues? Economists have been calling for a combination of spending cuts, entitlement reform, and tax increases to pay off our massive debt. That is the only credible way to do that. Besides, taxes have been the lowest in decades. We've taken over a decade of costly tax cuts. I think it is time that we start dealing with the debt. And letting the Bush tax cuts expire will help us on that, cutting the deficit by $3.5 trillion over 10 years. Then we can focus on reforming the tax code and cutting spending.

Do I need to go on?

And by the way, Obama has compromised with the GOP numerous times: on the debt crisis, on healthcare (removing the public option), on the payroll tax cut, the stimulus, and the extension of the Bush tax cuts, when the GOP held hostage the unemployment benefits for millions of Americans. And all the GOP has done is throw s*** at him and call him a demonizing, dividing Marxist. And all the while he's been compromising with them. So personally, I think its about time Obama and his cohorts ratchet up the pressure on the GOP and whoop their asses and expose them for the shallow narrow-minded fascists that they are.

                                  Next lie, please.....

No matter how many times you post negative smearing claim after claim regarding President Obama, actual events keep proving you are lying.

Under President Obama the unemployment rate is dropping, private sector jobs are consistently being added each month, the stock market has doubled and is consistently up overall, we're exiting wars we should have never engaged in, we're earning back the respect of the rest of the world, major landmark legislation has been passed that benefits millions of middle and working class Americans, e.g., LLFPRA, ARRA and the ACA, a draconian discriminatory policy, DADT, within our military was repealed, Osama bin Laden was hunted down and killed, etc., etc., etc.

All this and so much more despite being ham-stringed by a do nothing obstructionist republican congress who's only goal is to defeat him and see him fail no matter the cost to this nation along with the worst economic meltdown in 65 years and negative worldwide reputation due to conservative republican proven failed policies, deregulation and arrogance.

What is inconceivable is that no matter how massive the failure of proven failed republican/conservative economic policies and how damaging the results, there are millions of individuals that are convinced it is sound policy and continue to support candidates that will once again return us to those proven failed policies, which every candidate in the republican primary would do, some to a worse degree than others.

Here you go all you lack of facts conservative posters, of which there are many, since you seem to be grossly misinformed about President Obama's accomplishments in all areas. Now that you'll have the facts about President Obama's accomplishments, please refrain from making claims that are untrue. Thanks.

Very nice post bibina. I fear however that the root of the problem ls not in Mr. Obama's accomplishments or the veracity thereof, it is in the ingrained social paradigm that many so called conservatives are so deeply psychologically invested. To many of them the world is now upside down. Had Bush involved us in a nuclear exchange it would not be as bad and having the son of a mixed race marriage and a "negro" family in the White House and leading the nation.

Fact of the matter is, the better the economy becomes, the more achievements that Mr. Obama garners, the more incensed they become. Bless their hearts, I don't blame them, it's just the nature of tribalistic behavior. They can't help themselves. After all Blacks weren't even allowed to fully participate in the political system until after the voting rights act of 1964. Many see this as an encroachment on their inherited entitlements.

There have been many failed attempts on Mr. Obama's life. I pray that none succeed. Over time many will come to accept the truth, a new generation will be born, and hopefully all people will be judged on their actions and strength of character. Besides restoring the country, that may be Mr. Obama's fundamental 'raison d'etre'.

Hope and Change vs. Anger, Resentment, and Fear. I know which I will choose.

So stop with your lies. You might have fooled people years ago before the internet, but not anymore. It would be wise to actually look up information before you post anything; you make yourself look stupid and I'm sure that's not your goal.

I just had to stop by after reading Babina. Can we say each month jobs are added? This is a true statement. However, ask yourself if a partial truth is a lie, or a truth, maybe sidestepping for a slanted point of view. I did not see mention of jobs lost almost each month. I did not see mention of those entering the job market each month. I did not see you write about those that have just said screw it, dropping out of those that seek work because of a lack of places to send resumes. After all the adding and subtracting, at BEST it has been a flat market.

The stock market doubled? I think you better go to your nearest store for new batteries. Your calculator is not working very good. The markets are going up for a couple reasons. Some of those nasty 1% people are starting to invest a little as a bet. Thet are betting it has got to change and if so, the profits could be greater. Some pulling out of the euro zone putting investments in our markets hoping they will be safer. Either way, it is a good thing, but not because of anything that has come out of D.C.

Bin laden killed was a good thing for the entire world. I have my own opinion that once found, the goal was to kill him. I'm totally ok with that. I give BHO credit for giving the order to do so.

The wars you talk of we may have one little point of agreement. Sadam just had to go, period. The problem from my point of view was worring about what the united nations felt about just driving him out of a neighbors country. We should have gone full steam under bush 41. Taken full hard line military control of iraq, with a 20 year plan to little by little giving them thier country back as they hopefully learned to live with each other. Not doing it right the first time made the second time just a waste. Afganistan is a no win mess. It will be a no win mess because of the mind set of so many people there. Our leaders never learned from the mistakes of russia when they went in there. If victory is the name of the game, then most of the tribes will have to be eliminated. I do not promote mass killings, but if victory is the end result wished, this is the only way. It is just a no win for anyone. No matter what we do, no matter the day we leave, they will go back to the way they were before we came.

Earning back respect from the rest of the world you state. China is laughing at us all the way to the bank. The arab spring being written about is just wishfull thinking. We somehow let ourself side with france and italy about gadaffi. We let ourself believe this was a role for nato. If just one of these countries is taken over by the muslim brotherhood, oh lord, what a mess we will have on our hands. Russias gas and oil has now become more important to europe, so just watch what putin does in the next couple months. With the help of gazprom, he is about to give a huge kick in the pants to the economy of europe. This is the result of a state department with no clear objective. There is no leadership and it can be seen watching several east european countries starting to warm to russia again.

I guess I will have to spoon feed this information to you liberals because you are definitely unable to come up with a response.

Just a few quick questions here. Has anyone read the healthcare reform bill, has the cost of health care gone up or down? And why does it take three years for an economic plan? I am not of any political party, I am just asking a couple of questions.

For the first time in our nation's history the public debt has increased by $5.1 trillion in three years. No budget has been approved and passed for three years. Should it surprise you that Obama takes three years to entertain the idea of an economic plan?

Someone just now must have eluded to him that an economic plan should not include bankrupting the country.

Why is it that none of you who complain about the debt mention that including the costs of the wars and the prescription drug plan and no child left behind in the budget accounts for a good portion of that increase? Bush only kept the debt as low as it appears during his term by not counting some of the most costly items?

Obama and his promise to "transform America". The economy was in free-fall. Instead of addressing this he forced Obamacare on the American people. He tried to force 'cap and trade' on American businesses. He steadily borrowed and spent with impunity. More than a trillion dollars worth of stimulus that did not. Paying Brazil $4 billion to drill for oil with a promise that we would be their best customers. Tried to alienate Israel, our only mideastern ally. He continues to dig an ever deepening hole with green energy. I would continue but am simply too disgusted......

That would be because there are so many dropping off the unemployment rolls because they've been unemployed for longer than 99 weeks.

If you want an accurate poicture of unemployment you need to look at the total number of people employed and compare that number to the total number of workers available. This will show you that actual unemployment is closer to 17% - due to 'discouraged' workers who are no longer counted in the unemployment rosters.
